T

he Fox River is so much more than just a pretty river - it’s a hub of economic activity and is home to a thriving ecosystem, a variety of species and plenty of outdoor activities.

The summer is just beginning - leaving plenty of time to try everything on the Fox, from canoeing and fishing to biking and picnicking.

In the heart of Kane County, many of the outdoor activities have been made possible by the Friends of the Fox River, who have been monitoring the Fox River and taking action to protect and maintain the quality of the Fox River since 1990.

Other towns have also taken a recent interest in investing in the Fox River and its activities, including St. Charles, considering a $22 million plan to remove a dam and restructure the river for kayaking, surfing and whitewater sports. Aurora recently did an update to fix its canoe shoot, Batavia is working on

updating its riverside bike bath and South Batavia and Aurora have torn down useless dams in recent years.

There’s a reason these towns in Kane County are dedicating so much time and effort into making the Fox River a destination - it’s a great draw for locals and visitors alike.

“Get outside and enjoy your local preserves,” says Brittany Kovach, community affairs specialist with the Kane County Forest Preserve. “Sit out at a picnic table and enjoy lunch with your friends, go for a hike, or attend one of our nature programs. There’s plenty to do!”  FOX RIVER TRAIL The Fox River Trail offers endless opportunity to explore the great outdoors. The 44.6 mile trail spans from Oswego to Algonquin and consists of asphalt, concrete and crushed stone. Biking,

walking, running, inline skating, horseback riding and running are all popular activities. Check out the Mill Race Cyclery in Geneva for bike rentals! More info: kaneforest.com; 630-232-5980  RIVERBOAT CRUISES For anyone not willing to put in a little energy to explore the river, the Fox River Riverboat Cruises are a great way to take in the sights. Every year from May through September, the paddle boats depart from Pottawatomie Park in St. Charles and traverse the Fox River for an hour ride. Each ride is narrated, offering a bit of history about the boats and the river.

Private rentals are available, and drinks and snacks are served aboard the boat for a fee.

often inaccessible by boat. For those looking for a beginner or intermediate trip, Buffalo Park Forest Preserve to Voyageurs Landing Forest Preserve (7 miles) or Blackhawk Forest Preserve to Fabyan West Forest Preserve (10 miles) are both good trips to consider. Anyone looking for a challenge can attempt Voyageurs Landing Forest Preserve to Blackhawk Forest Preserve (8 miles). The Clark Island Recreation Area, Les Arends and Glenwood Park also are great spots to kayak or canoe.

RENT A CANOE OR KAYAK  FOX RIVER CANOE AND KAYAK This outfitter offers three different self-guided river trips from April through September. Fees are $40 per person for a Batavia trip and $60 for St. Charles and North Aurora trips. Fees include a canoe or kayak, life preserver, paddles and a shuttle.  KAYAK MYAK RENTALS This rental company offers three different trips on the Fox River. The first starts in South Elgin and ends in St. Charles, the second begins in Batavia and ends in North Aurora, and the third starts in Carpentersville and ends in Elgin. Rates are $60 per person and include a kayak, paddle and leash, life jacket and whistle. Guided trips are also available. They offer kayaks and canoes (single and double) stand-up paddleboards and more. Single rentals are $50 per day ($60 on the weekends) and doubles are $80 per day ($90 on weekends). the Fox River? This is your chance. The River View Miniature Golf Course in Pottawatomie Park rents kayaks hourly daily from May to mid-August. Hourly rentals are $17 and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. All renters must be 16 or over. Visit riverviewminigolf.org for details.  SOUTH ELGIN CANOE Enjoy a 6.5-mile canoe or kayak trip on the Fox River starting below the dam and finishing at Ferson Creek Park in St. Charles. CLASSES AND LESSONS  FRIENDS OF THE FOX RIVER The Friends of the Fox River offer a series of 10 “Find the Fox” canoe trips from the spring to fall. The canoe trips are every second and fourth Sunday of each month. Each guided trip is different and the LIFE OUTDOORS JUNE 2019

The series begins with lake-based paddling skills before progressing to more advanced techniques on the water. FISHING Bring home dinner! The Fox River has a variety of fish found in its waters, including small and largemouth bass, channel catfish, bluegill, walleye, flathead catfish and muskies. Don’t forget to purchase a fishing license before heading out!

RIVERBOAT LEGACY NEW CRUISES OFFER HISTORY, RELAXATION AND FUN

t’s hard to deny the beauty of the Fox River from any point along the shore whether you’re biking the trail, fishing on Boy Scout Island or looking out from the historic tower at Pottawatomie Park. But nothing can quite compare to experiencing the Fox River during a paddlewheel riverboat cruise on the waterway itself.

This summer, step aboard the Fox River Queen or St. Charles Belle II to experience for yourself the history, the natural beauty and the local pride via a paddlewheel riverboat in your own community.

The riverboat cruises have been a main attraction in St. Charles since the 1940s, when the late Chet Anderson bought his first boat and began chartering cruises from Pottawatomie Park. And this tradition continues under the new ownership of the St. Charles Park District.

“We know the memories and tradition of the riverboat cruises go back many generations,” said Tera Harvey, Manager of Cruise Operations. “We are honored to carry on that experience for so many, but

also provide a fresh perspective through multiple new offerings.”

Public cruises, special events and private charters are available this summer, attracting all ages and interests.

“Whether you’ve never been a passenger or have been coming for years, we hope the new cruises enhance your St. Charles experience,” said Jen Bruggeman, Assistant Superintendent of Recreation. “We encourage everyone to climb aboard and fall in love with the Fox River Valley.”

This couldn’t be easier with the line-up of regularly scheduled cruises throughout the week as well as themed cruises offered at special times throughout the summer.

Fifty-minute, regularly scheduled public cruises are available June through August – prefect for last-minute planners. This cruise travels from Pottawatomie Park, north to the Q Center and back again. Along the way, patrons learn about the landmarks and unique history as well as flora and fauna native to the area.

Additionally, the Park District hosts special

public cruises of various themes for relaxation, exploration or education, and of course fun – all drawing on the knowledge and resources within the Park District staff.

The Sunset Cruise is the perfect way to unwind at the end of the day, enjoy a date night or evening out with friends. With the beautiful sunset as your backdrop, munch on appetizers from local restaurants and listen to live music, relaxing in the early evening glow of the night sky.

History Happy Hour on the Fox also provides a unique way to experience the sights and sounds of the Fox River. This 90-minute cruise challenges your local history knowledge while enjoying cocktails and appetizers.

Those interested in learning more about the wildlife on the banks and flying above should check out Fox River EcoCruise or Birding by Boat. Park District naturalists lead the cruises, giving passengers a better understanding of the ecology, wildlife and

various species of birds along the river.

Binoculars are recommended, but also available for purchase aboard the cruise.

For a fun group outing with youth, surprise children with a Kids Cruise and witness their excitement of boating down the river.

During this 50-minute trip for ages 3-12, children engage in eye-spy activities, crafts and design their own sailor hats to take home.

Maybe you’re planning a private event. The Park District is continuing to offer private charters for wedding showers, fields trips, birthday or anniversary parties and more.

Each riverboat has an upper, open-air deck, and can accommodate 100 guests for sight seeing tours or 40 guests for a seated intimate dinner or luncheon.

Target sports remain an on point choice for recreation

Whether it’s career-related or a new recreational activity, primarily for stress relief or to improve physically and mentally, local shooting ranges and clubs remain popular destination for millions of Americans.

It certainly helps that competitive shooting continues to gain in popularity, especially with increasing numbers of women showing an interest, while some families have turned to recreational shooting as a positive way to share family time while also teaching the importance of firearm safety and etiquette.

Whatever your interest is in getting target practice, from archery to gun ranges, there are places nearby to visit and get your fix.

“Last week two ladies came in that had never shot before,” says Mark Glavin, owner of Fox Valley Shooting Range in Elgin. “They opted to take a private lesson and loved it. Neither of them purchased a firearm, but they said they really enjoyed themselves and would probably come back.”

Glavin acknowledged that women are the fastest growing segment of the industry.

“They’re doubling every year and we’re seeing quite a few daily shooters now,” he says. “Sometimes we’ll see a group of girls come in during the evening to check it out for the first time.”

Fox Valley Shooting Range features 12 custom-built lanes going as far out as

75 feet and two private five-foot wide, 45-foot training lanes. The Club also offers training classes for all skill levels, offering an inviting environment for those who have never held a gun, let alone shot one before, as well as those who have been pursing the pastime for awhile and are looking to improving their skills.

“The location of our range is really nice as it backs up to a residential community and now that it’s getting nice out some people walk from the condo complex here,” Glavin said.

“We offer classes like conceal carry training and we cover not just the legal aspects, but the more practicable of how to do that. Too many people have a permit and buy a firearm and think

Also located in Elgin is the appropriately named Elgin Rifle Club, a private club open to members only that has been providing a venue to learn and practice Olympic style four position small bore rifle and bulls eye pistol shooting skills for over 100 years. Call (847) 695-6963 to learn more.

Although situated in Elburn, there’s the St. Charles Sportsmen’s Club, which features seven light trap fields, including two wobble traps, 10 sporting clay station, five-stand, lighted skeet field, rifle/pistol range, archery and more on its 70 acres.

The Family Campout With a crackling fire and a clear night sky, the campsite is our castle WITH JONATHAN BILYK

Every year about this time, a familiar ritual renews.

As evenings suddenly turn warm and the sounds of crickets begin to fill the night air, winter-wearied eyes turn toward the shelf in the garage holding the tent and the camping supplies.

Soon after, the conversation begins: Where would you like to go camping this year?

Through the years, this conversation has produced a surprising variety of destinations: On the beach, lulled to sleep each night by crashing ocean waves on North Carolina’s Outer Banks; In the verdant green mountains of Tennessee and Virginia; Amid the snow-capped splendor of Montana; In the windwhipped heat, but stunning vistas of the deserts of Arizona and Utah; and the chilly waters, but stunning solitude and serenity of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

The list of far-flung destinations I’d like to pitch a tent remains long.

But while my little ones remain that way, tremendous scenery often needs to take a back seat.

Mountains, oceans, beaches and forests will still be there in a few years.

For now, the point of the exercise is something much

more intrinsic, much closer to home.

That’s why more often than not, as lifelong denizens of Illinois, the conversation returns to two realistic choices for our bunch: Lake Michigan’s eastern shores in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula or the lake’s western shores in northeastern Wisconsin – which for us is a fancy way of saying “Door County.”

A jaunt through the woods or along a riverbank with my little one would be therapeutic. A day on a local river in a kayak or canoe with my older one sounds magical. And some day soon, we may just find ourselves parked around that small, but bright campfire, in a new-to-us forest preserve or Illinois state park, for a couple of nights within easy driving distance of home.

Backwoods campers we usually are not. Given sufficiently amazing natural scenery, dad can do with a pit toilet (the other members of our bunch, much less so.) So, flush toilets and warm showers in a campground bathhouse are more our speed.

But even with a few minimal modern conveniences at hand, we’ve found our purposes can still be realized, seated around a crackling fire, under a starry night sky, sharing laughter and stories, as our bodies find the beat of nature’s circadian rhythms, our minds slow to nature’s pace and our hearts reconnect with each other in a way offered by few media other than a bit of time in nature.

In recent days, my eyes have also turned more local, as my mind warms to the possibility we may have for years overlooked some other destinations and choices for family time in nature, even closer to home.

That’s why, as this missive is typed, my browser’s open tabs include pages with information about local

CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME Your hands do a lot: They scroll through your phone, type emails, cook your food and support you when you ride your bike. It’s your wrists that often pay the price.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common orthopaedic condition that causes pain, numbness or tingling in your hands and/or arms.

The carpal tunnel is a hollow passageway in your wrist and forearm, bordered by small carpal bones and a ligament that forms the roof of the tunnel. Your median nerve and the tendons that bend your fingers run through this tunnel. In CTS, either the tissues surrounding the carpal tunnel swell, or the tissues

covering your tendons swell. In both instances, the swelling compresses your median nerve, limiting normal blood flow to the nerve. Without normal blood flow, the nerve can’t function properly.

Numbness typically occurs in the tips of the thumb, index finger, middle finger and half of the ring finger. Pain can accompany numbness or tingling, especially as the pressure on your median nerve increases.

RISK FACTORS FAMILY HISTORY. Sometimes, smaller carpal tunnels run in the family.

While there’s no way of knowing the size of your carpal tunnel from the outside, if someone in your family has experienced CTS, it is possible that you may also be at risk.

IMPROPER USE OR OVERUSE OF YOUR HANDS OR WRISTS. If your job or hobby necessitates use of vibratory tools, requires forceful gripping activities, or requires forceful repetitive wrist movement, you have a greater risk of developing CTS. PREGNANCY. Hormonal changes can cause fluid retention, which can make your extremities swell and cause increased pressure on the median nerve.

OTHER DISEASES. Rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid gland imbalance and diabetes have been linked to CTS.

WHEN SHOULD I SEE A PHYSICIAN ABOUT CTS? If you have numbness, tingling and pain in your hands and/or arms that is constant, or has been coming and going for several weeks, it’s time to consult an orthopaedic physician about treatment.

To detect CTS, your physician will start by talking to you about your lifestyle and personal history. They can then test for CTS through a physical examination to evaluate numbness, fingertip sensation and muscle weakness. An electromyogram/nerve conduction velocity test (EMG/NCV) can be performed to assess the median nerve’s function.

TREATMENT FOR CTS Treatment, as prescribed by your physician, could include: • Wearing wrist splints at night to prevent your wrists from bending.

This can decrease compression on the median nerve at your wrist, decrease your symptoms and help you sleep better.

• Rest and remediation of improper or repetitive wrist movement.

• Cortisone injections into the carpal tunnel to reduce swelling and decrease nerve compression.

If the above methods fail to relieve your CTS symptoms, surgical carpal tunnel release can be very effective. While surgery can’t reverse permanent median nerve damage, it can stop more damage from occurring. That’s why it’s so important for the nerve to be treated before permanent damage occurs from chronic CTS. The surgery involves incising the ligament overlying the carpal tunnel through one or two small incisions in the palm/wrist. This increases the size of your carpal tunnel to relieve compression on the median nerve, restore normal blood flow and promote nerve healing to help resolve symptoms.

Light use of your hand is permitted immediately following surgery. You will be able to resume full activity in four to six weeks, and there’s a minimal chance of CTS recurrence after surgery.

EVEN WHEN YOU’RE OUT! With Dr. Tarun Mullick

Recently, I was down with the flu. (Yes, even a doctor can get the flu, contrary to popular thought) So, I wanted to eat to hydrate and get some salt, but was tired of the canned classic Campbell’s Chicken Noodle. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with old fashioned chicken noodle…but seriously, how many times can you have it in a row?

A suggestion came my way to pick up the phone and call Vino Thai in St. Charles to get some kicked up soup called the Tom Yum Soup. This is a hot and sour soup made from a blend of broth, based with the famous lemon grass and lime leaves, galangal, lime juice, onion, cilantro, and two types of mushrooms. There is also a little kick of their sweet chili paste. It’s really not hot and spicy but just flavorful and spicy.

In order to kick this soup up to my needs with protein, I added chicken, though you can chose your protein from pork, shrimp, seafood or tofu. One sip and I was like “ahh…”

This was not your usual Campbell’s or late night ramen (not to knock the college favorite which has found a new home lately in the eyes of the gourmet). But, the balance of carbs and protein in the Tom Yum was perfect with every sip. I finished two bowls in one sitting.

Once I was feeling better, I hit up Vino Thai again, this time for the basil chicken.

This dish is a stir-fry ground chicken, blended with some thai chili and garlic along with bell pepper and basil leaves.

I prefer mild to moderate heat, but you can get it up the charts to 10 and beyond, if that’s to your liking. This dish packs in flavor on every bite, giving a new level of sophistication that takes you halfway around the world, while being in your backyard.

Q: I heard recently that osteoporosis can affect men, too.

What can be done?

A: Osteoporosis is found in both women and men, though

being post menopausal predisposes women to it more often. But a decrease in calcium intake in foods like milk, cheese, yogurt and other sources can result in osteoporosis as well. Vitamin D needs to be in check too.

Being in sunlight for 20 minutes a day is helpful (not in direct sun tanning conditions, but just exposed). Weight bearing activity is important too.

Q: What is celiac disease?

A: Celiac is a disease where gluten (which is found in wheat,

barley, rye and many other foods) damages the small intestine lining. It causes diarrhea and a malabsorption of nutrients. If you are suspicious, come on in for testing.

Q: With constipation, what can I do? medicine to become dependent.

A:

However, in your body, you really cannot replace the colon at any time for this reason. So, like with cars, you can add lubricant or push force treatments that enable the car to function better. Esophageal cancer has gone up nearly 400 percent in the past few decades. one do early stage lining change in the esophagus is called Barrett’s esophagus, which can be detected with an upper scope test. If a patient continues on any medicine without proper evaluation, then that can be missed. So seeing a professional is the most proactive defense.

Q:

Gallbladder problems with stones seem to occur in my family. Does a gastroenterologist help in the evaluation and treatment of those?

A:

Yes, gallbladder problems and gallstone problems are common reasons for gastroenterologists to evaluate and treat. Many times tests or procedures like ultrasound or an ERCP can be needed to help. At times, surgery to remove the gallbladder is required.

Dear Jane: Great question. Colon cancer can affect anyone, regardless of family history. Everyone over age 45 should get a colonoscopy. If you have family history you should start at age 40 or 10 to 15 years before the youngest relative with a problem. Screening helps reduce risk.

Dear Kristen: Yes, food intolerances to lactose, sucrose and fructose are common, so you may need to avoid those. We have tests in the office for that. The symptoms of IBS and food allergies are often similar, so testing for food allergies is reasonable. We can test for that, too. We have helped many patients diagnosed with food allergies, so it’s not all IBS.

‘Martha Stewart’s Grilling’ longtime favorites

artha Stewart’s Grilling,” newly published by Clarkson Potter, captures more than 125 old and new recipes from the Kitchens of Martha Stewart Living and ushers in the 2019 outdoor cooking season.

The handy guide has plenty to offer aficionados as well as those more conversant with grilling. Mouthwatering photos are a bonus.

Readers will find basic instructions on techniques for cooking with both charcoal and gas, how to prepare ingredients to simplify entertaining and suggestions for signature cocktails and compatible desserts.

The book also borrows a page from popular Chicago-based restaurateur Rick Bayless’ play book: Grilled Pork Tacos al Pastor (recipe follows).

Recipes include such standbys as burgers plus slabs alongside Korean short ribs and porterhouse steak with paprika potatoes and lemony romaine wedges.

GRILLED PORK TACOS AL PASTOR (MAKES 24 TACOS) • 1 package (3 ½ ounces) achiote paste • 3 chipotle chiles in adobo sauce (from a can), plus 1/4 cup sauce • 1/4 cup vegetable oil, plus more for grill and brushing • 1 ½ pounds boneless pork shoulder, about 1 1/4 inch thick • 1 medium red onion, sliced into ½-inch rounds

• Coarse salt • ½ pineapple (about 12 ounces), peeled and sliced into 1/4-inch rounds • Corn tortillas, warmed, for serving • Smoky Chipotle Salsa • Lime wedges, fresh cilantro leaves and plantain chips, for serving

In a blender, combine achiote paste, chiles plus sauce, oil and 3/4 cup water; blend until smooth, about 5 seconds. Place pork in a shallow baking dish or resealable plastic bag. Put one-third marinade over pork; turn to coat. (Refrigerate remaining marinade up to one month, to use on other meat or fish.) Cover pork and let marinate in refrigerator at least one hour or up to two days. Remove pork from marinade, letting excess drip off (discard marinade).

Heat grill to medium-high, with an indirect-heat zone. Lightly oil grates.

Grill pork over direct heat until browned and sizzling, about 15 minutes per side. Wrap in parchment-lined aluminum foil and transfer to indirect heat; cook until tender when pressed, about 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, brush onion slices with oil, and season with salt. Arrange in a single layer over direct heat. Cook until grill marks are dark, about two minutes per side. Move to indirect hear and cook until soft, 5 to 8 minutes.

Repeat with pineapple.

Transfer pork to a cutting board and thinly slice. Add to a skillet set on grill to keep warm. Chop onion and pineapple into small pieces, add to skillet and toss to combine. Season with salt.

Serve pork mixture with tortillas, Smoky Chipotle Salsa, lime wedges and cilantro.

IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO PLANT! WITH MEAGAN PROVENCHER

W

e get a lot of inquiries as to “when be the best time to plant?” Usually that answer is “when the ground is not frozen”. Of course, lately it seems like the ground is frozen 8 months out of the year but the ground usually thaws in mid-March and doesn’t freeze again until late December. So that means all that time in between you can plant just about anything.

This season started off particularly late. It’s a common misconception that you can only plant for three weeks in April. If you followed that this year, you’d have only been able to plant for about four days in April thanks to two significant snow events and a ton of rain and that’s no fun. There is no deadline or date for planting. We plant until we can’t sink a shovel in the ground anymore. “….but Meagan! It’s hot/dry/wet/cold/buggy/hot/raining/snowing/ hot out.”

Plants don’t care about that part – the people do! Sure, no one likes to be outside when its 90 degrees in the shade and you can cut the humidity with a knife. But if you follow planting instructions, you can plant on those days if your heart desires (hot days are my favorite time to work in the garden because that after-gardening refreshment tastes that much better!). I’m so busy in the spring that I often don’t get to plant in my own garden until July or August. You would never be able to tell as all the plants are thriving no matter when I shoved them in the ground between driving kids around.

IF YOU CHOOSE TO PLANT ON DAYS OTHER THAN THAT ONE PERFECT 70 DEGREE DAY IN MID-MAY, HERE’S SOME TIPS FOR PLANTING AND WATERING:  FOLLOW THE CARE INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN TO YOU BY THE GARDEN CENTER! We don’t print those things out for the pretty pictures. We have been planting trees for almost 100 years…we’ve got it down to a science and we can explain it in our sleep.

Always ask if you have questions, and always follow the directions (I’m looking at you husbands of the world that tried to put that stroller together without looking at the instructions in five different languages…). Plants are living things and have little quirks that need to be accommodated. A tree planted even an inch or two too deep can suffer for years before giving up the goat and dying. Give your plants a fighting chance and learn the ways of

the tree Jedi. Proper planting always wins in the end and good garden centers are always happy to explain how.  DON’T LEAVE PLANTS LANGUISHING ON YOUR HOT DRIVEWAY. If you bring plants home from the garden center and can’t plant them right away – that is okay as long as you take care of them. Plants still in their containers may need water more frequently than they will once they are planted. The smaller the container, the faster it will dry out. Obviously they are much happier in the ground but if you have to let them sit a day or two that’s fine but don’t neglect them completely.

 FOLLOW THE SAME WATERING INSTRUCTIONS FOR SPRING PLANTINGS, JULY PLANTINGS, AND NOVEMBER PLANTINGS. The plant doesn’t change nor do its watering requirements. It’s too lengthy to get into here but just know that if you get on a set watering schedule, it doesn’t matter what time of year you plant. And you may be surprised to know that most plants do not need water every day! A large tree that is planted in July may only need water twice a month. Of course there are always exceptions so that is why it’s always smart to buy local and to consult with your grower to make sure you know exactly how to keep your new plant on track. We lose more plants to overwatering than anything else and are happy to teach you our watering secrets.

Now get out there and plant until you see those first snowflakes in December (or November as was the case this past year.)

MULTI SURFACE SPRAY PAINT My grandmother loved to paint. She never threw any away, and she never had paint leftover. Even if there was only a bit left in the can, she would slap that paint on something in the house or yard to brighten it up. Anything from pots and buckets to a bookshelf or a chair. I guess I inherited that, because I love color and I love to paint things.

But I opt for spray paint in a lot of cases. And Krylon makes great paint that holds up well. I use it every year to touch up outdoor furniture, to refresh or reface garage sale finds, and to make that almost perfect item that was the wrong color fit beautifully in my home or yard.

hether you get manicures for pampering, to have a finished look, or as a form of personal expression, there are some fun trends to consider for the summer. Here are some ideas to amp-up any routine, from the experts at Mario Tricoci.

“Nail trends are anything from chrome to matte, glitter to jelly, neon and sheer and everything in between,” says Tricoci’s Molly Sloat. “Summer is always a great time to experiment with nails and nail art shows no signs of slowing down.”

Yellow has grabbed the summer spotlight for color, and often is being shown paired with other bold colors like hot pink or black and white. The Glass-Half-Full Guy:

COULD YOU SPARE ME THE TIME? WITH PETER STADALSKY

T

he funny thing about time is that not everyone treats it the same way. In many parts of the United States, we keep our time running close to a Swiss watch; if you’re not five minutes early, you’re late. If you travel out into the more “country” areas of the United States, you’ll notice things slow down a bit. People may even suggest you try taking it easy. Travelers like to throw around the term “culture shock” to newbies heading into uncharted waters. Time is one of those variables that can mean dramatically different things based on culture. Let me give you a few examples: My friend and I had befriended a taxi driver in Peru who would escort us around the city Cusco.

We would send a text message out and Anselmo would magically appear within minutes at the

street corner we stood at. A time came when we needed to arrange a ride very early in the morning.

I texted Anselmo and told him to be at the bed and breakfast the next morning by 4:30 a.m. because we needed to catch a scheduled bus. That next morning we stood outside the house, stars still sprinkled in the sky, checking our phones. It read: 4:35 a.m. but no word from Anselmo. Another five minutes passed, nothing. Our bus was set to leave Cusco at 5 a.m. So at 4:45 a.m. with no sight of our cabbie, we sprinted down the allies on the cobblestone streets with our 30-pound backpacks.

We stumbled into our bus stop at 5:01 a.m.

Needless to say the scheduled bus didn’t show up until 5:17 a.m.

While we were snaking up the switchback mountain roads, I got a text from Anselmo around

6 a.m. telling me he just woke up and would be by to pick us up very soon. At the time I thought this guy totally blew us off, but later learned that I just didn’t understand their relationship to time.

Spending more time in Latin America, I learned that in many areas, being up to an hour and a half late is not “late.” And you can be up to two hours late if you simply make a call! It also was explained to me that the scheduled bus would have waited a while for us, knowing everyone is always late.

Eventually I learned that if I really needed someone to be on time, say to get a ride to the airport, then I needed to ask them to be there on “English time.”

Otherwise it’s assumed to the cultural norm. I heard that it’s not uncommon for a movie theater to start the show up to an hour late if the owners don’t feel there are enough customers - they know

more people will stumble in later.

I remember hearing a story in Ireland about a woman who had a train connection, but her first train left late, causing her to miss the connection. When she told the train station authorities what happened and demanded they fix the problem, they nodded their heads and came up with a solution. The train staff called the train that had already left and told them to wait at the next stop because they had to deliver a person. That train actually waited and one of the station employees drove the lady to her connecting train. Granted everyone on that train was now late, and I suppose the cycle continues as the story goes on.

The interesting thing about time is that we use it in such an indoctrinated way based on our culture that we don’t think much of it until there’s a tremor in the status quo. Our relationship with time tells a lot about our society’s values - good and bad. We certainly place importance on efficiency and also have a high degree of respect for others time. To our detriment, we can get so regimented with schedules that we forget to enjoy the little things in life. It’s silly to say one culture has the right relationship to time. Rather there is something we can all appreciate from every culture and their differences, as well as our own.

TIPS FOR DRIVERS HITTING THE OPEN ROAD THIS SPRING (BPT) - Americans are ready for spring weekend getaways and road trips. According to the latest Gauge Index survey from Hankook Tire, most of us are planning an outdoor getaway. The beach (51%) is the top vacation Americans are planning this spring, followed by a national park (39%) for the outdoorsy type and an amusement park (31%) for the thrill seekers.

Just as spring cleaning your house is a habit, so should a spring tune-up for your car, especially before that muchanticipated road trip. Even though more than one in three drivers (37%) say they want to stay on top of car maintenance this year, what many people don’t realize is that the snow, freezing temperatures and salt, as well as potholes that develop as the roads finally thaw, can do a number on your car. Make sure your car is in top shape for any trip with five spring cleaning tune-ups:

CHECK YOUR OIL The survey found that a quarter of Americans would like to learn how to change their oil. While actually changing your oil is a bit more involved, checking oil levels before heading out is just a matter of looking under the hood. To do so, be sure the car is on level ground, let the oil settle for a few minutes, then pull out the dipstick - it usually has a yellow or red handle, but the owner’s manual will direct you where to look. Wipe the dipstick clean, then push it all the way back in, wait a second, and withdraw again. If the oil lands between the two markers, you’re ready to roll. Otherwise it’s time for an oil change.

MONITOR YOUR AIR PRESSURE A quick air check can be the difference between a bumpy road trip and smooth sailing. Begin by driving around for a couple of miles because tires that have been parked for a while won’t have as accurate of a pressure reading. Then remove the valve cap from the tire, place the pressure gauge on the valve stem, and press until the hiss sound disappears and the gauge offers a reading. This reading should match the recommended PSI, which you can find on the driver’s side door jamb or in the owner’s manual. If the reading indicates the tires need air, head to your local tire shop or gas station.

This is also a good time to check all four tires’ treads.

Insert a penny with Lincoln’s head facing down - and if his entire head is visible, it’s time to replace your tires.

For those who do need new tires, be sure to consider your driving habits and upcoming travel destinations, to ensure a flat tire doesn’t hold up any adventure.

If you’re among the 44% of drivers who consider

themselves adventurous like an SUV and are heading off the beaten path, consider rugged off-road tires.

REPLACE YOUR WINDSHIELD WIPERS Snow and ice can really wear down the blades on windshield wipers. Look for cracks, creases or imperfections in the blade’s rubber, or if you notice streaks or grime on your windshield when using the wipers, it’s time to replace! Make sure the washer fluid is topped off by looking at the white, translucent container with a windshield or water symbol on it. Then just remove the cap and check the fluid level in the reservoir so that you’re ready to handle any weather down the road.

UPDATE YOUR ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE Spring is a good time to make sure your roadside assistance plan is up to date - especially for the 42% of drivers behind the wheel of a vehicle six years or older. Be sure your service card is valid to give yourself peace of mind for any trip.

WASH YOUR CAR Snow and salt can leave a lasting impact, especially within the wheel wells of a car. Give your vehicle a thorough cleaning to prevent any rust or permanent damage. Besides, everyone wants their car to look shiny and clean in those road-trip social media posts as they head out for their spring getaways!

No matter what destination drivers are steering toward this spring, a few quick tune-ups will keep things running smoothly, all season long.

Art in the country Fine Line Creative Arts Center marks 40 years of art experiences

f you love art, love to make art, or have an interest in art, then you need to take a drive west of Randall to the Fine Line Creative Arts Center. Innovative and experiential, creative and collaborative, this nonprofit organization, founded in 1979 by Sister Denise Kavanagh, has become a haven for the arts, and anyone who enjoys them.

When it opened in 1979 it was a small gallery on James Street in Geneva. Weaving was Kavanagh’s passion, and she brought a loom to the gallery. Soon visitors asked if she would teach them to weave. By the second year there were 40 students, and classes in knitting and painting were added. A few years passed and the community of artists had outgrown the

gallery and moved to a storefront in Geneva. In 1986 another move was in order and the Fine Line moved to a restored barn on four acres in the St. Charles countryside.

Today, Fine Line is one of only a few regional art centers in the area. Professional artists teach a variety of classes and workshops. The membership and students draws from the

Chicago area and surrounding states. There are as many as 1,300 students a year, a teaching staff of 40-plus and well over 200 class offerings a year, from ceramics to wood carving, metal smithing, leather work, glass blowing and more.

“You don’t have to be an artist to appreciate what we can offer, says executive coordinator Eileen Collins. “A lot of people hear the word art classes and they think that maybe they aren’t good enough.

But we are not here to judge! Our range of people are from professional artists to hobbyists to those who just decided they wanted to do something artistic and have fun. We are here to help you do that.”

For those who have never visited Fine Line before, it is home to the Kavanagh Gallery, built in 1999, which hosts six to seven gallery exhibitions each year.

These exhibits range from nation-wide invitational and juried shows of paintings, pottery, textiles, photography and sculpture, to one and two person shows, faculty, and member exhibits, and our annual holiday extravaganza, the Christmastime at Fine Line Show and Sale.

Now the community of artists and artisans is marking 40 years, and there never has been a better time to come out and explore.

“We have people here since the very beginning,” Collins says. “We reach out to many age groups. We continue to evolve and expand.”

If you need permanent life insurance, which of the following types should you consider?

• WHOLE LIFE (WL): A WL policy’s death benefit (face amount) pays out at the death of the insured as long as the policy is active (in force). Premiums are the same (level) for the length of the contract and are inflexible. Initial premiums cover both the cost of insurance plus establish a cash reserve within the policy. This cash value forms a reserve which grows on a tax-advantaged basis. Some WL policies are “Participating” which means that they are eligible to participate in a dividend if the insurance company declares one.

The interest credited each year to the cash value is set by the insurance company. These contracts are not very transparent regarding the underlying fees and expenses.

• UNIVERSAL LIFE (UL): UL policies offer more flexibility and transparency than whole life policies. The policyowner has the ability to modify the amount and duration of premium payments, within certain limits, and still maintain coverage for life as long as the cash value reserve is positive. UL policies were developed in response to consumer demand for more transparency of the underlying mechanics of the policy than WL policies provide. The UL premiums, which are often made annually, are reduced by the current policy expenses, and the remainder is deposited into the cash value account of the policy. Each month, the cash value is credited with interest and the policy is debited by a cost of insurance (COI) charge and any other policy charges and fees drawn from the cash value. Interest credited to the account is determined by the insurer (in the form of a crediting rate) and may have a contractually guaranteed minimum rate.

• INDEXED UNIVERSAL LIFE (IUL): IUL is a UL variation with the same operational characteristics and platform but with an interest crediting rate determined by reference to an equity index such as the S&P 500 without dividends. The index return is typically adjusted by a participation percentage rate, then subject to a maximum interest rate cap and minimum interest rate floor. IUL offers the potential for a higher yield than UL, with indirect participation in the equity market, as well as a guaranteed minimum crediting rate (i.e., floor) that provides downside protection for the policyowner.

• VARIABLE UNIVERSAL LIFE (VUL): VUL insurance policies are also based on the UL platform but have greater investment flexibility and risk/return opportunity. VUL products permit the policyowner to allocate a portion of each premium payment into one or more “separate account” funds. Separate accounts, which are similar to mutual funds, are not subject to the restrictions of the insurance company’s general account portfolio, reducing the policyowner’s exposure in the event of insolvency. VUL is most appropriate for individuals willing to accept greater risk for greater reward as the policy’s cash value is dependent on non-guaranteed market value changes.

• NO-LAPSE GUARANTEE UNIVERSAL LIFE (NLG): NLG life insurance policies are UL policies with a guarantee that if a specified minimum premium is paid regularly the policy will not lapse for a specified period, or for life, even if the cash value decreases to zero. NLG is best suited for individuals focused on ensuring the death benefit will be available at a guaranteed cost and where cash value accumulation may be less important.

Don’t be concerned if your head is spinning as you are trying to absorb all of this. Choices in permanent insurance can be confusing. It is important, however, to work with someone who can help tailor the right solution for you!

• Variable life insurance products are long-term investments and may not be suitable for all investors. An investment in variable life insurance is subject to fluctuating values of the underlying investment options and entails risk, including the possible loss of principal.

• Variable universal life insurance combines the protection and tax advantages of life insurance with the investment potential of a comprehensive selection of variable investment options. The insurance component provides death benefit coverage, and the variable component gives you the flexibility to potentially increase the policy’s cash value.

Women Build events provide the opportunity for women to take a proactive step in serving their communities.
