Don’t miss the annual Geneva Christmas Walk and House Tour, a holiday highlight in December. This year, Geneva’s own celebrity chef Alain Roby will recreate his Guinness record-breaking candy cane and share the sweet victory with all in attendance.

Holiday happenings ALAIN ROBY TO RECREATE WORLD RECORD CANDY CANE

Three time Guinness World Record-holder Chef Alain Roby will celebrate the six-year anniversary of his creation of the World’s Longest Candy Cane, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7 starting at 7:30 p.m. at the All Chocolate Kitchen, 33 South Third Street in Geneva. The ultimate act of holiday cheer, Chef Roby will present a 10-foot long replica of his Guinness World Record-breaking 51 ft. candy cane, which will be broken into tiny pieces with a “magical” golden hammer.

As a way for guests join in the celebration, “Insane Candy Cane Celebration” hoodies will be on sale for $30, and the All Chocolate Kitchen will donate 100 percent of the proceeds to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The hoodies will be on sale at the All Chocolate Kitchen through Monday, December 24.

PECK FARM TO HOST NEW HOLIDAY EVENT

The Geneva Park District is celebrating the holidays with a brand-new event, Christmas on the Farm, from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sat. Dec. 15 at Peck Farm Park.

The evening kicks off with an ice carving demonstration from Nadeau's Ice Sculptors and live holiday music from Paper Boats until 5 p.m. The Geneva High School choir will perform from 5 to 6 p.m.

Families are invited to huddle around the fireplace and listen to Christmas stories from Mrs. Claus in the Peck Farm House, or gather near the outdoor fire in George's Circle. L.L. Bean will offer demonstrations on how to

build a shelter and properly layer clothing for outdoor winter adventures. Santa will even make a special appearance to visit with the children.

The event is free, however Graham's Hot Chocolate and other food will be available for purchase, and some activities may have a small fee.

CELEBRATE THE SPIRIT OF GIVING THIS SEASON AT LAZARUS HOUSE Lazarus House in St. Charles, a 501(c)(3) homeless shelter in St. Charles that offers hospitality, food, safe shelter and education, is inviting local residents to take part in holiday celebrations and lend a hand. Volunteers are needed to cook, provide food and supplies, as well as assist or be a guest.

Light up the night

AT DISPLAYS AND FESTIVALS AROUND THE REGION  HOLIDAY LIGHTS AT MOOSEHEART Take in the sights of more than 80 holiday lighted displays from the comfort of your own car during the 9th Annual Holiday Lights at Mooseheart. The display will be open from 5-9 p.m. November 23 through December 31. The drive through the lighted route takes about 15-20 minutes.

Cost is $10 per car. Proceeds support Mooseheart’s operating budget to provide residential care and academic/vocational training for the children they serve. After viewing the lights, be sure to stop by the fieldhouse from 5:30-8:30 p.m. to see Santa when he visits on December 8-9, 15-16, and 22-23. Hot chocolate, coffee and Christmas cookies will be served.

 LARSEN’S LIGHT SHOW This light show spectacular is held annually at the private home of Elburn resident Brian Larsen, the owner of County Wide Landscaping. Wrap it up!

Houndstooth & Plaid focuses on distinctive wrapping and gifts For Cherie McCarron, taking the time to find the right paper and accessories to wrap a gift is almost as important as the gift itself. With that philosophy she launched Houndstooth & Plaid, where the focus is on distinctive gift wrap.

She and her staff strive to personalize each wrapped gift, working with a choice of various papers - including sustainable and recycled wrapping materials - as well as the ribbons, embellishments and unique handmade cards.

“I have always loved wrapping gifts,” McCarron says. “I feel there is just something special about giving and receiving something that someone took the time to make beautiful. With every fold, every ribbon tied, the gift giver thinks about the recipient, maybe the memories they shared, the way they might feel when they open the gift, how they feel about the person.”

She and her husband, Kevin, are long-time residents of the Tri-Cities and are excited to fulfill a dream of opening a shop in downtown Geneva.

Water Street Studios receives NEA grant Outside funding is key to arts center's achievements

Community, collaboration and creativity have helped Water Street Studios become a vibrant Fox Valley arts center that supporters hope will become even more significant.

Since its inception, Water Street Studios in Batavia has relied on government grants and donations from private foundations to achieve its goals, which include ensuring its community outreach art programs and resident artist studio spaces are funded for the future.

The organization recently received a $10,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

“The NEA actually called us, I think because there were threats to cut art funding and what money they did have they wanted to go to sustainable organizations, not organizations that might fall apart,” said Danielle Hollis, Water Street’s executive director. “We

were on their radar -- it was very exciting.”

Water Street Studios is located in a former factory and warehouse space at 160 S. Water St. A major renovation of the space took place a decade ago, through the efforts of arts supporters in the community, the City of Batavia and Batavia Enterprises, who partnered in the project.

They were able to secure tax-increment financing district money from the City of Batavia and private donations to complete the renovation. The project actually came to fruition during the economic recession of 2009.

“It happened because the community wanted it and there was a dedicated group supporting it,” said Hollis, who was named Water Street’s executive director three years ago.

The Water Street space includes a

main-floor gallery where artist exhibitions are showcased.

Water Street worked with another contributor, the Fox Valley Community Foundation, to have a lift installed earlier this year, making the main gallery wheelchair accessible.

The goal of a fundraising campaign several years ago was to raise $50,000 in a day.

“We had a huge event and hit our goal,” Hollis said.

Water Street partnered with the Dempsey family of Batavia, for whom the main first-floor gallery is named. The Dempseys matched the $50,000 and helped Water Street Studios start an endowment fund.

“They helped us work toward sustainable growth and hire me as full-time director,” Hollis said.

Water Street has been growing ever since and has doubled its operating budget.

The Dunham Foundation also has helped

Water Street Studios in various ways including funding art education programs.

Another gallery upstairs will be named after its new sponsor, Chicago Capital, starting in November.

Between the two galleries, Water Street has 24 exhibits every year, featuring more than 100 artists. The 26 resident artists who rent studio space at Water Street have opportunities to exhibit their work in the galleries.

Gallery shows at Water Street switch every second Friday of every month to different featured artists.

The public can view the monthly exhibits Fridays from 2 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. Gallery opening receptions on the second Friday of each month also are open to the public from 6 to 9 p.m.

“We’re going to expand our hours in 2019, which is exciting,” Hollis said. “Also, we always tell people that if they want to come during other times during the week, that’s fine, just call in advance.”

Hollis said that operating the gallery events requires the help of many volunteers including the Water Street board members. Resident artists sign up for service hours, helping at the front desk and with cleaning and special events.

Water Street offers about 250 art classes a year in about 25 different mediums for people of all ages. After-school art classes are available for all Batavia elementary school students. Soon, Water Street plans to provide the same free program to an increasing number of schools outside of Batavia, particularly those that are under-resourced.

-Continued from page 19 Water Street employs part-time employees to instruct the outreach classes; they teach curriculum provided by the studio, created by its director of education. Artists who are private contractors also may rent space and offer courses at Water Street.

A Water Street membership program offers discounts on classes and gallery space rentals for special events to community groups such as the Batavia Chamber of Commerce.

Artist studios are of various sizes, with rent based on square footage. On average, resident artist studios cost about $300 per month, with leases of 12 months.

A metal working lab and a ceramic studio, both equipped by Water Street, are accessible to any of the resident artists.

The NEA grant will allow Water Street Studios to continue offering the studio spaces at subsidized, reasonable rental rates, Hollis said. Because of this benefit, resident artists only pay for square footage, not for utilities, marketing or maintenance.

Two resident artists, Chris Cudworth and Jim Jenkins, greatly appreciate the opportunities having studio space at Water Street has offered.

Jenkins has been involved with Water Street from the beginning. At first, he was looking for an independent studio, but his wife, Monica, convinced him that a space near other artists at Water Street would be better.

“She was right,” Jenkins said. “It has become a good place for me.”

At Water Street, Jenkins met another resident artist, Greta Bell, with whom he collaborated with on a revolving traveling circus carousel.

He designed and fabricated the carousel and Bell used the display to hang her paintings and bring art into communities that may never have been able to connect with art or artists he said.

Cudworth said the association with other artists at Water Street Studios has has pushed him to produce new work, and in new ways.

“The overall social network that revolves around Water Street Studios is a joy to be around” said Cudworth.

Resident artists may exhibit at open-call shows and events such as Winterfest Art Market, coming up Dec. 14-16. Water Street is holding the event in partnership with the Artisan Collective in Batavia and Batavia Mainstreet.

“We’re going to have about 20 booth vendors, about 15 exhibiting artists, and our resident artists participate, so there will be more than 50 artists and artisans taking part, and visitors may purchase their works,” Hollis said.

“We shared our work with the community and the rewards were quite gratifying, said Jenkins.

“Without Water Street Studios this would never have happened in my life and work and I'm grateful that it did.”

Toward its goal of doing more collaborative fundraising with other arts organizations, in November,the studio will participate for the third year in Giving Tuesday, a global, online fundraising program for nonprofits.

“That’s exactly what it costs to run the program for a year,” Hollis said.

Hollis invited many local arts organizations and businesses to join Water Street in the fundraising effort for Giving Tuesday this year.

“We did a video shoot and did a campaign together called, I’ll Give to Support the Arts,” Hollis said. “Instead of competing for funding, we worked together on a campaign.”

Water Street had the video edited and is distributing it free to the campaign participants to use in their own Giving Tuesday fundraising efforts.

The joint campaign was intended to show potential donors that arts matter in the community and hopefully, to motivate them to give on Giving Tuesday, Hollis said.

In the future, Water Street plans to develop more strategic partnerships outside of Batavia with schools and other entities to pursue the mission of serving the entire Fox Valley region and beyond.

“We really want to get out there and invite groups that might not have had a reason otherwise to come to Water Street Studios,” Hollis said. “We want people who maybe have never been to an arts studio before to come here.”

Crafting Christmas Discover artisan treasures at the Fine Line’s annual sale

f you are an artist, enthusiast or arts and crafts lover, and have never been out to the Fine Line, you’re missing a great experience.

Fine Line Creative Arts Center in St. Charles is one of only a few regional art centers in the Northern Illinois area. Professional artists teach a variety of classes and workshops. The membership and students draws from the region and surrounding states.

Tinime a bottle

Rooted in the heart of Geneva, Fiora’s branches out with new signature wine

Fiora’s Restaurant has been a staple in the Geneva community for the last nine years, but its start was anything but assured. Owners Ann and Mike Anastasio never intended to open a restaurant until the historic house at 317 S. Third Street in Geneva changed that.

Eleven years ago, Ann, the owner of the Wellington Group, Inc., a human resources firm, was quickly running out of space in her office for her growing business. When she heard about the possibility of a historic home in the heart of Geneva being torn down to make room for condos, she jumped at the opportunity to save it.

“My father actually worked in the building over 30 years ago,” Ann says. “I have a lot of great memories when I was younger going

there. I needed more space for my HR firm, but it was also a way to save the building.

“There’s no other building like it in Geneva.”

When Ann and her husband, Mike, purchased the house, they were planning on using the top floor as her new office, and the first floor was going to be rented to tenants as housing.

After spending some time in the historic house, Mike had a different idea.

“My husband saw the first floor and said, ‘this would be a great space for a restaurant,’” Ann says. “I was a bit against it because we had never owned one and had never done that before. It’s a lot of work to have a restaurant.”

Ann and Mike, a patent lawyer by trade, decided to go for it. They settled on a fine

dining restaurant with European influence.

“We wanted it to be a home away from home,” Ann says. “It’s a beautiful old home not everyone would have a chance to go into. We wanted to provide top-tier customer service, the finest food, but also to feel like you’re in a home.”

Nine years after opening its doors, Fiora’s, which is named after their 11-year-old daughter, Alexa Fiora Anastasio, is thriving.

But starting a restaurant from scratch was no easy feat.

It took over a year to get the first floor, which seats 120, renovated and up to code. They upgraded everything, including the electrical, plumbing and floors. Despite the changes, the new owners made the conscious choice to keep

much of the décor the same as it was.

“Aside from some painting and the wood floor, everything is pretty much the same, even the beautiful antique chandeliers, ” Ann says. “We did add a wine cellar, which is breathtakingly beautiful.”

One other update they made to the space was adding an outdoor patio that seats 100.

“It’s beautiful,” Ann says, noting that they have live music every Wednesday through Saturday in the summer. “It’s a place where everyone comes to hang out under the beautiful maple trees and children dance on the front lawn.”

Mike, who books most of the music, says that when they first opened the patio, they were seeking out musicians to perform. Now, they have artists approaching them about playing, as well regular

performers like Gregory Hyde, Dennis O’Brien, Rob Stone and “The Voice” contender Stephen Bores.

While they both kept their day jobs, Ann is regularly checking in on the restaurant during the day and Mike makes a point to come by at night.

They may not be there all of the time, but they always have their hand in everything going on at Fiora’s.

-Continued from page 25 “It can be time consuming, but it’s rewarding to see it succeed,” Mike says. “Even though there’s work involved, it’s more fun than sitting at home and watching TV.”

“It’s been selling very well,” Ann says, noting that they don’t plan to expand sales outside of the restaurant. “People can take it home and we’re working on getting it online, as well.”

With the dining industry ever changing, Ann, Mike and the Fiora’s staff are constantly working to evolve and cultivate the ultimate dining experience for their guests.

Fiora’s found such success in Geneva with their passion for food and wine that Ann and Mike had thought about the possibility of expanding. They even had several offers to expand their restaurant to multiple prime locations, including the Drake Hotel in Oak Brook.

Their latest venture is their very own private label of wine.

“It wasn’t something I originally anticipated doing,” Mike says. “Our business model was fine food and fine wine, and we succeeded in that. When the interest in wine in the community developed, it spurred this idea of having our own wine.”

Mike’s family used to have a vineyard in southern Italy, so the Anastasios were inspired to grow their own grapes on some property they own. They knew they’d have to go bigger than a hobby vineyard to produce their own label for the restaurant.

“It just sort of happened; that’s the nice thing,” Mike says. “It was just a natural step in progression in what we were doing.”

They worked with Nancy Borst, their wine specialist, and created Fiora’s Cuvee, a blend of cabernet, syrah and grenache from the state of Washington. While Borst is the expert and guided the process, the Anastasios had a say in every part of the creation of the wine.

Ann even picked out the bottle and the label, which was an image from a local artist.

“We were honored, but we really want to keep it the same,” Ann says. “We really just decided it was too much for us and there’s only one Flora’s - and we wanted to keep it that way.”

Ann didn’t realize how much Fiora’s meant to the community until one day when she made small talk with two strangers on a plane.

“They both weren’t from the area and they both knew my restaurant,” Ann says. “One of them said it was his wife’s favorite restaurant when they come to the Chicago area.”

Ann and Mike know they’re doing something right – Fiora’s has had weekly regulars since they opened, some of which come more than once a week.

“We’re just flattered and humbled by the success of this,” Mike says. “We’d like to continue to have it evolve and continue to be a community staple. It’s been a great, long run and we hope to continue it for awhile.”

‘Holiday and Celebration Bread in Five Minutes a Day’

hen “Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day” debuted in 2007, home bakers stood up and took note. They embraced the game-changing time-saving methodology espoused by co-authors Zoe Francois and Jeff Hertzberg.

The duo demonstrated that homemade yeast dough could be stored in the refrigerator for use whenever it’s needed – with only five minutes a day of active preparation time.

“Holiday and Celebration Bread in Five Minutes a Day” (St. Martin’s Press), the authors’ latest

endeavor, was published Nov. 6. It applies the same quick and easy approach to creating savory, sweet, healthy and decadent recipes no matter what the occasion.

Readers will find 100 accessible recipes in such chapters as The Master Recipe, Flaky Dough and Christmas and Easter Breads.

Chocolate-Raisin Babka Bundt, a rich dessert among whose ingredients are 16 egg yolks, definitely resides in decadent territory. It was adapted from a Ukrainian recipe. Try it during the upcoming holidays.

CHOCOLATE-RAISIN BABKA BUNDT (Makes at least three 1-1/2-pound loaves)

• 3 cups milk (100 degrees For below) • 16 egg yolks (1 lb.)

• 1 Tbl. granulated yeast • 1/2 cup sugar • 1 Tbl. kosher salt • 12 Tbl unsalted butter, melted, plus more for greasing the pan • 7 1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 3/4 cup raisins • 3/4 cup bittersweet chocolate, melted • 1/4 cup rum, for soaking per baked loaf (optional)

Mixing and storing the dough: Mix the milk, egg yolks, yeast, sugar, salt and melted butter in a 6-quart bowl or a lidded (not airtight) food container.

Mix in the flour without kneading, using a heavy-duty stand mixer (with paddle), a Danish whisk or a spoon. The mixture will be quite loose because of all the yolks.

Cover (not airtight) and allow to rest at room temperature until the dough rises for 2 hours.

The dough will be loose, but will firm up when chilled. Don’t try to use it without

chilling for at least 3 hours. Refrigerate the container and use over the next 5 days.

On baking day, grease a Bundt pan or an 8-1/2 x 4-1/2-inch nonstick loaf pan with butter. Dust the surface of the refrigerated dough with flour and cut off a 1-1/2-pound (cantaloupe-size) piece. Dust the piece with more flour and quickly shape it into a ball by stretching the surface of the dough around to the bottom, rotating the ball a quarter-turn as you go.

Using a rolling pin, roll the dough out into a 1/4-inch-thick rectangle, about 11 x 15 inches.

Melt the chocolate and spread it evenly over the dough and sprinkle the raisins over it. Roll the dough into a log, starting at the long end, and pinch the seam closed. Place the dough in the prepared pan. Cover loosely with plastic wrap and allow to rest at room temperature for 90 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F, with a rack placed in the center of the oven.

Bake for 45 minutes, or until golden brown and firm. Brush with rum immediately.

Allow to cool on a rack before serving.

Bar bills can get big, so keep it under control by offering beer wine and soda plus a fancy, creative cocktail you can make in batches. Create places to congregate. Your home likely is set up for cozy living, not for entertaining a crowd. And if you don’t move some furniture before the shindig begins, you’ll find everybody huddled in the kitchen. Move large tables, like your dining room table, against a wall and raise your chandelier if needed.

Move two and three chairs together in little “vignettes” with an end table or a coffee table, to create places for small groups to gather.

One tip we loved was to raid your kids’ toy box and set up small, nostalgic games like Jenga, Connect Four, and Hungry Hungry Hippos around your home. It sounds silly, but it works like a charm!

Speaking of the kids, you are going to have to decide if youngsters are invited or not.

If you say yes (which let’s be honest, is one

of the great advantages of a New Year’s Eve Party at home) then consider something special for them to enjoy: ideas include a video game party, pajama-themed party, projected movies on the wall, and special food just for them to enjoy. Questions answered on heart disease, medical test costs, acid reflux and more

t is my honor and privilege to serve the community of the readership of this publication.

Our practice focus is to care for patients to help them and tailor their care individually with current therapies. Every day in the office, we get questions from patients and other members of the community about their physical health, and the options available to them. Here are a few that many readers might find applicable:

 DEAR DR. MULLICK: I have many family members with heart disease. Should I be concerned?

- Kristin, Geneva DEAR KRISTIN: Family history does increase the chance of heart disease. Other factors do include age, hypertension, smoking, and lipid levels. If you have risk factors, you should be evaluated for preventive care. Even if you have no risk factors, it is important to get an annual physical exam to screen for other medical issues.  DEAR DR. MULLICK: I have had some blood when I wipe with a bowel movement. What do you think I should do?

DEAR BRENDA: Blood when you wipe merits a work up that would often include colonoscopy. Certainly you want to rule out inflammation, polyps or cancer.

Many times, though, patients will have a hemorrhoid or anal fissure (a crack in the anal lining). These can be treated with local treatment often. At times, minor surgical procedures are needed. Definitely present to gastroenterologist for an evaluation.  DEAR DR. MULLICK: Getting tests done like colonoscopy, blood tests or CT scans can be very expensive at hospitals.

I have heard they are way cheaper at endocenters, out patient imaging centers. I want to use my deductible wisely. Can you explain how I can find out?

- Brian, St. Charles DEAR BRIAN: Yes, the cost differential between hospitals facility fees and endocenters, surgical centers or imaging centers is often several thousands of dollars.

- Chris, Elburn DEAR CHRIS: It is important to present to gastroenterologist for evaluation of the heartburn. An evaluation should include an endoscopy to determine the level of esophagitis and rule out a precancerous condition, Barrett’s esophagus. In addition, it is important to identify ulcers and gastritis. Other conditions, such as eosinophilic esophagitis, which are related to food allergies can present similarly.

Length of treatment and types of treatment, along with lifestyle and dietary changes can be determined. In addition, there are pH tests to determine where the gaps in treatment are. Which times of day do you need better acid control.

Dear Dr. Mullick, My family never had polyps or cancer. Do I really need a colonoscopy? Jane Dear Jane: Great question. Colon cancer can affect anyone, regardless of family history. Everyone over age 45 should get a colonoscopy. If you have family history you should start at age 40 or 10 to 15 years before the youngest relative with a problem. Screening helps reduce risk.

Dr. Mullick, I’ve got bloating and gas. Sometimes I have diarrhea or nausea after I eat. Could I have food allergies?

My doctor said it’s IBS (irritable bowel). Kristen Dear Kristen: Yes, food intolerances to lactose, sucrose and fructose are common, so you may need to avoid those. We have tests in the office for that. The symptoms of IBS and food allergies are often similar, so testing for food allergies is reasonable. We can test for that, too. We have helped many patients diagnosed with food allergies, so it’s not all IBS.

Save on healthcare costs in 2019 Y

our cable bill, entertainment expenses and travel extras - these often top the list when families sit down to discuss where they can save money.

One expense you should add to your list this year is healthcare costs.

Because autumn marks the beginning of the annual open enrollment period for employees, now is the ideal time to sign up for a new health benefit plan or adjust your current plan. Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) and Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) are two options for you to consider if you're looking to save money in the new year. But, how do they work?

Both FSAs and HSAs are tax-advantaged accounts, allowing individuals to set aside money, tax-free, to pay for eligible healthcare expenses such as co-pays, coinsurance deductibles, prescriptions, etc. However, there are several key differences between the two.

An FSA, which can only be provided by your employer, generally does not have any eligibility requirement and allows you to set aside up to $2,700 (contribution limit for 2019) in the account - most of which must be used within the plan year. An HSA - which you can obtain on your own or through your employer - requires that you have a qualified high deductible health plan (HDHP).

Contribution to HSAs are limited to $3,500 for individuals with self-only HDHP coverage and $7,000 for individuals with family HDHP coverage, and the money can be used to cover medical expenses throughout your lifetime.

easily access and use the funds in their HSA or FSA to pay for qualified medical expenses wherever Visa debit cards are accepted, making it easy to pay for expenses such as:

automatically pre-tax, saving you money in the long run. Plus, your employer may also contribute funds to your HSA. Signing up for an FSA or HSA is a convenient way to ease your spending when your healthcare plan doesn't cover certain expenses, such as over-the-counter prescriptions, travel vaccines and diagnostic tests. In fact, 48 percent of FSA users said they would be likely to cut back on medicines and treatments if they didn't have an FSA, according to a 2018 Flexible Spending Account and Health Savings Account Consumer Research study commissioned by Visa and conducted by Kelton Global. According to the study, 89 percent of FSA users agree that saving money through pre-tax contributions tops their list of reasons for having an FSA. In addition to financial benefits, there are emotional benefits to having an FSA. Seventynine percent of FSA users said their account helps them take control of their medical expenses and an equal number said it makes them feel confident they can pay for a medical emergency.

One of the most convenient ways to access funds in an HSA or FSA is with a Visa Healthcare Card. It allows employees to

There's a reason why 64 percent of FSA users prefer to access their funds with their FSA card, and 74 percent of users without a debit card are interested in one. Likewise, 60 percent of HSA debit card owners cite "easy to use" as their top reason to like their HSA debit card and 86 percent would recommend an HSA to others. It’s not just for grandmas anymore From relieving stress to creating sustainable fashion, knitting and crocheting are hip again thanks to younger knitters

he word “knitting” might conjure up images of older women knitting booties in anticipation of a new grandchild’s arrival. Yet in a time when technology connects us more than ever, knitting and crocheting have seen resurgence as tweens, teens, Millennials (and even men of all ages) are bonding over this “classic” activity.

Mary Tyler, age 29, began knitting when her mom sent her a ball of yarn and knitting needles in a care package. After a tutorial on the Internet to teach herself the basics, Tyler headed to her local yarn store for her first pattern. Besides being a fun hobby, Tyler finds knitting to be an opportunity to connect with something on both a personal and global level.

“Knitting is a way to contribute to the slow fashion movement, where the quality and longevity of items is valued over low cost, and it's a way to connect with the desire to create something,” Tyler says. “Knitting is a skill largely passed down through the generations, but with the advent of technology and the Internet, it seems like many of these types of traditions have faded until now.”

Just like mobile devices, knitting offers users a portable hobby that can be done anywhere.

Pamela Greenleaf, a retired flight attendant, knitted as a child and resumed the practice years later when she needed to kill time during layovers for work. Laura Keiken, manager of

Wool and Company in St. Charles, started knitting years ago during her sons’ baseball games.

“Knitting is pretty acceptable do anywhere.

Usually I’m sitting and knitting wherever I am,” Keiken says.

 Finding your Zen

Keiken dubs knitting as “the new yoga” for its meditative state that requires knitters to focus their attention on making one stitch at a time rather than ruminating on thoughts.

“We’re moving at a faster pace than ever before. Knitting allows people the opportunity to slow down,” Keiken says.

Greenleaf finds knitting helps her stay calm when waiting for appointments.

“You can get stressed out and irritated as you sit and wait your turn. But pulling out knitting to pass the time helps you be in a better frame of mind when you’re called,” Greenleaf says.

In addition to stress relief, Tyler also has noticed an improvement in her posture since she started knitting.

“If you sit down to knit for an hour and you hunch over your work, you’ll notice very quickly that you're in pain,” Tyler says. “I always try to sit up and stay relaxed when I'm knitting.”

 Social connections

While knitting is a fun way to pass time while waiting at the doctor’s office, by no means is it a solitary endeavor. Greenleaf finds knitting to be a good conversation starter as people often ask her how long she’s been knitting and what she’s working on. She says it’s also a great way to share something personal with others.

“When you give someone a homemade gift, people are so thankful you thought of them.

It’s like giving a part of yourself to others,” Greenleaf says.

“I deal with quite a bit of social anxiety, but these communities make me feel welcome and open to others. We hang out and chat, but you can also count on them to be at your charity fundraiser or choir concert, and to share vet

“If you're starting to get frustrated, write down where you left off and just put it down. We've all had knitting disasters, and so will you! If you take them in stride and keep coming back every day, you'll build a lifelong relationship with a craft that never stops giving,” Tyler says.

Tasty treats to make, share, and enjoy

illiam Reichman, a.k.a. Bill the Baker, has been baking bread as a hobby since about 1972. Never a professional baker, having spent an entire working career in facets of the computer industry, he was always passionate about bread baking, particularly when he could enjoy the craft with his sons in the kitchen. Now, Bill the Baker teaches a bevy of classes around the area, and monthly at DRM European Café & Delicatessen. He’s sharing some recipes for great baked treats to bake, wrap and gift to friends and family (or keep just for yourself).

“The fall season is absolutely my most favorite time of the year,” he says. “I love it because of the freshness of the cool air, the abundance of bright fall colors and this is the time of year that most people start thinking about baking. “ One of the seasonal items he says he loves baking with is cranberry. Here are three cranberry-focused recipes to enjoy, and share with others.

 Mini-Pumpkin Quick Bread Yield 8 mini quick breads INGREDIENTS

• 2 Large Eggs • ½ Cup Butter – room temperature • ¾ Cup Light Brown Sugar • 1 ½ Cups AP Flour

• ½ tsp. Ground Ginger • ¼ tsp. Ground Cloves • 2 tsp. Ground Cinnamon • ¼ tsp. Ground Nutmeg • 1 tsp. Baking Soda

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees with a rack in the middle of the oven 2. In the bowl of your mixer, running the mixer on medium speed, cream together the butter and brown sugar until creamy, about one minute.

3. Change the mixer to low speed and add the eggs one at a time 4. In a separate bowl put in the flour, ginger, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, baking soda, salt, and baking powder. Using a hand-held whisk, mix the ingredients to incorporate. You should see a fairly uniform color in the bowl.

5. Add the dry ingredients to the bowl with the creamed butter and sugar. Add the canned pumpkin and walnuts (if you are using them) to this same bowl. Mix the ingredients with the paddle attachment of the

mixer just until combined. Be careful not to over mix the dough. The dough will be fairly thick at this point.

6. Spray the 8 cups of the mini-loaf pan with a bakers spray. Spoon in the mix into the 8 cups so that each cup has an equal portion of the batter. The cups should end up being about ¾ full.

7. Place the pan in the oven and bake for about 34 – 40 minutes. A toothpick inserted into the loaves should come out clean when the bread in done baking.

8. Remove the pan from the oven and allow it to cool for about 5 minutes. Remove the loaves from the pan and cool on a wire rack.

9. This bread is also delicious if served with a portion of whipped cream!

 Cranberry Sauce Muffins with Streusel Topping Yield = 6 Large Muffins INGREDIENTS

Streusel Topping • 1 cup All-Purpose Flour • ½ cup Brown Sugar (light or dark) • 1 tsp. Ground Cinnamon • ¼ cup Unsalted Butter – melted and cooled Muffins • 2 Tbsp. Powdered Buttermilk • ½ cup Water – room temperature • 1¾ cups All-Purpose Flour • ¾ cup Cake Flour • ½ cup Granulated Sugar Measure out all of these ingredients before you start to assemble this recipe – Mise en place!

Preheat your oven to 425 degrees with a shelf in the middle of the oven. Generously butter a muffin pan that holds 6 large muffins.

To make the streusel, add all of the streusel ingredients to a small bowl. Mix all of the ingredients with a fork or rubber spatula until the mixture has a fairly even consistency and the ingredients appear slightly moist. Set the streusel aside for now.

In a small bowl, mix the powdered buttermilk and ½ cup of water together and whisk to combine. Set this aside for now. If you want to use whole buttermilk you will still need to measure out ½ cup.

In a separate large bowl, whisk together the cake flour, AP flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.

Add the 3 eggs to another small bowl and whisk them to combine. Now add the buttermilk mixture to the eggs along with the sour cream, vanilla extract, and the melted butter. Use a whisk to incorporate these wet ingredients.

Add the cranberry sauce, fresh cranberries, and orange zest to the bowl of wet ingredients.

Using a rubber spatula, mix these ingredients together to incorporate.

Add those wet ingredients to the bowl of dry ingredients. Using a rubber spatula, fold in all of the ingredients just until they are all incorporated together. Be careful to not overmix the batter at this point.

Using a large spoon or ice cream scoop, fill the muffin tins to just below the top of the muffin pan. Sprinkle the streusel mixture generously to the tops of each muffin.

• 1 Tbsp. Baking Powder • 1 tsp. Baking Soda • ½ tsp. Ground Cinnamon • ¼ tsp. Salt • 3 large Eggs – room temperature • 1 cup Light Sour Cream • 1 tsp. Vanilla Extract • ¼ cup Unsalted Butter – melted and cooled • 1 cup Cranberry Sauce • 1 tsp. Orange Zest • 18 Fresh Cranberries – sliced in half

Bake the muffins on the middle shelf in the 425 degree oven for 5 minutes. Then reduce the temperature to 375 degrees oven and bake the muffins for an additional 21 minutes. To test the muffins to see if they are done baking, stick a wooden toothpick into the center of a few muffins to make sure the toothpick comes out of the muffin clean (no batter sticking to it). If the muffins are not done bake them for an additional 3 minutes and check again.

Repeat this step until the toothpick is clean when removed from the muffin.

When the muffins are done baking, cool the muffins in the pan on a cooling rack. The muffins will come out of the muffin tin much easier if you allow them to cool first.

After about 10 minutes, remove the muffins from the pan and allow them to continue cooling on a wire rack.

 Cherry Cranberry Apple Sauce INGREDIENTS • 12 oz. Fresh Cranberries – rinsed • ½ cup Dried Tart Cherries • 1 cup Sugar • 1 cup Water • 1/8 tsp. Cinnamon • 1 Juice from one large orange • 1 Granny Smith Apple – peeled & grated

1. Put cranberries, cherries, sugar, water, cinnamon, and orange juice in a sauce pan.

2. Periodically stir the ingredients while cooking on medium heat for 10 minutes.

3. While the ingredients are cooking, peel and grate the apple.

4. After the initial 10 minutes of cooking is completed, stir in the grated apple. Continue to cook on medium heat for 2 additional minutes.

5. Remove pot from heat and allow the sauce to cool.

6. Transfer the ingredients to a covered container and refrigerate for a few hours before eating.

kill plants. There. I said it. I’m a professional gardener with over 25 years of gardening experience and I kill plants. Of course, I don’t like to kill plants but it happens. And it happens to everyone and anyone who has ever bought a plant – whether a house plant (oh, man do I REALLY kill those…), a perennial or a big tree. But why do these plants die? What can prevent them from dying? Are all those boring instructions and care sheets and sales people worth listening to? (yes. Always yes.).

 WATERING

We lose more plants to overwatering than any other reason. People just love their plants to death. Watering is a very difficult technique to explain and master. You ask a room full of 100 plant people “How much should I water?” and you will get 100 different answers. It’s one of the only things we struggle with each year on how to clearly explain and educate folks. Err on the side of caution. It’s better for a plant to be a bit too dry than too wet. Always check the soil. Check it like a cake. If the stick comes out wet, plant is fine. If it’s hard to push in or comes out dry, give the plant a good soak. I overwatered a hydrangea and it promptly croaked. Totally my fault as it was next to my hose and got soaked every time I turned the water on or off. I ignored its pleas for help (yellow leaves, smushy stems) and now it’s gone and I am sad.

 NEGLECT

You cannot purchase a plant, leave it unattended on your driveway for three weeks, and expect it to live once you throw it in the ground. Plants are living things. Water your plant until you are ready to plant it (we leave plants in our sales yard all summer long…the difference? We water!).

When a plant is newly planted, you’ll need to check on it weekly to make sure it’s doing okay. Doesn’t need water necessarily (see above!) but it needs to be at least checked on. Treat them like your kids. Granted, I ignore my teenager sometimes but I still make sure he has food and water….

 IMPROPER PLANTING

It may seem trivial but the depth at which you plant a new plant is extremely important. Watch the depth that you dig your hole (depth depends on the size of the root ball). You can dig a 5’ wide hole but if it’s an inch too deep your plant will struggle.

Planting techniques are complex so always ask the garden center what the proper planting depth is for the specific plants you purchase.

They have eaten everything in my garden at one point or another. I’ve lost full grown Oakleaf Hydrangeas. Hostas disappear overnight. The bottoms of all of my Arborvitae gone. All of my purple coneflower - gone. And pretty much every vegetable at one time or another. But I fight back. I use organic repellents (PlantSkydd is our favorite) and chicken wire. Don’t feel like you’ve failed if the rabbits get the best of your plants. Whether it’s a physical barrier such as wires or spray or a different plant that they don’t like, there are always solutions. I’ve used my own yard as a “rabbit proof laboratory” so ask me for a list of plants they don’t like. Together we will beat them.

This one is probably the most important. I’d be lying if I told you I haven’t bought plants at big box stores (gasp!). However, I no longer have any of those plants in my garden as they just didn’t thrive. Flowering dogwoods, weird redbuds, gorgeous Japanese Maples with unpronounceable names. All dead. It makes a big difference to purchase plants that are grown for our area and climate, in soil that is similar to our own gardens.

That dogwood I bought? The soil it was in was red clay. Red clay is in Georgia not Illinois. The plant never stood a chance.

Sure, add a weirdo or two that is dirt cheap to your garden but if you are adding a shade tree or foundation plantings, spring for some higher quality plant material that is grown in and for the Midwest.

If you need additional support, I am always around in the winter to share a cup of coffee and commiserate over lost plants and garden failures. Hmmm….maybe we should start a Plant Support Group! Who’s bringing the donuts?

The St. Charles Park District strives to provide recreational activities for all members of the family – even the fourlegged kind.

Recognizing that dogs are family members too, the park district accommodates furry friends in many ways with dedicated dog parks, dogfriendly trails and even special dog events.

“We like the pond and the agility equipment and they love playing catch,” said Haiduk, as he tossed a ball to Bacon who caught it mid-air, ran it back and then zipped through the tunnel.

 BARKS IN PARKS Residents have three different dog parks to choose from to let their sidekick run, jump and play. Built in 2007, the 2.5 acre dog park at James O. Breen Community Park was the first of its kind in St. Charles. One year later, the East Side Sports Complex dedicated three-fourths of an acre for a second dog park. And lastly, in 2015 the District added threefourths of an acre for a dog park at River Bend Community Park.

“If they don’t get enough exercise, they get a little crazy,” he said. “And it’s important for them to interact with other dogs.”

According to the Humane Society of the United States, dogs that have more exercise and socialization are less stressed and less likely to act out in such ways as digging, chewing, barking, having accidents and escaping. Therefore, dog parks can serve as an outlet to help prevent bad behavior.

At the Breen dog park, Duncan, Buttons, Bodie, Kipp, Leroy and Dora regularly meet with their owners for some running, chasing, fetching, sniffing and playing.

puppies, and their owners have witnessed the positive influence older, more socialized dogs have had on the younger pups. Helping set the example is “the Sheriff ” or Dora, a 13-yearold Husky Collie mix owned by Joe and Debra Lippert of St. Charles, who earned her nickname (and badge she wears around her collar) for her ability keep the pups in line.

“The socialization is tremendous for them,” said Jim Frigolett of Elburn, who’s been bringing Buttons, his Pointer mix to the park for six years.

The owners agree they come for the dogs, but they come back for the people – as they met here several years ago and share the camaraderie they may not find elsewhere.

“I call it my therapy,” said Andi Wyer of Geneva, who brings her Golden Doodle Leroy to the park. “I could be in the worst mood, and then I come here, and it’s the highlight of my day.”

While dog parks give pets a chance to exercise without a leash, residents may also take their walking buddies on a leash to community parks and along the 20 miles of trails owned and maintained by the park district.

“All dogs need to be walked, so treat yourself and your dog to the fresh air and beautiful scenery of the Fox River, forest preserves and wetlands along the trails open all day, 365 days a year,” said Erika Young, Park District Marketing Manager.  DOGGIE PAWTIES Recreation for puppies doesn’t stop at the dog parks and trails; the park district includes man’s best friend in their very own doggie parties.

The park district just wrapped up the Doggie Howliday Pawty, complete with photos with Santa and a holiday wear contest, and next year pups and their owners can save the date for the annual Doggie Egg Hunt at 2pm Saturday, April 13, held at the River Bend dog park.

Regaining the Christmas spirit With JONATHON BILYK

Every year, as the calendar flips from October to November, a debate rages across America.

In the past, the debate raged in personal encounters and gatherings. And in recent years, it has spread across social media platforms.

Politics? No, this is about something far closer to the lives of so many of us. And it centers on the key question: When is the right time to allow would-be Buddy the Elf impersonators to begin blasting their holiday music and burying us under the mounds of ribbon, holly and other trappings of the traditional Yuletide season?

Throughout my childhood, you would have found me firmly in the hoho-holiday, Christmas crooner camp. From hopes for a walk in a winter wonderland, to silver bells, click-click-click, and holly jolly birthday parties at the home of Farmer Gray, watching the chestnuts pop, there were few times of the year more “lit.”

But in college, like many of my peers, I took a job in retail. And the ol’ Christmas spirit got run over by a reindeer – or in my case, a pallet jack.

What was to blame? It’s hard to say, exactly.

The grown adults fighting over Tickle Me Elmo, flat screen TVs and Xbox Ones certainly played a large role. Early mornings and late nights in a stockroom, while friends went to Christmas parties, contributed, as did dealing with some managers who needed a visit from a few Christmas-related spirits.

And as much as it once tickled my bowl full of

jelly, now the endless loop of vapid Christmas music – this is where I particularly point the finger at Paul McCartney for dumping “Wonderful Christmastime” on the play list – exacted a toll upon my sanity.

By the time I left the job for good, the damage to my holiday spirit had already been done.

Now don’t misunderstand: You would never mistake me for a Grinch. The actual holiday still brought joy, especially the religious aspects of the day. But beyond that? You could stuff your stocking with the surrounding holiday season, for all I cared.

Given a little distance from that retail stage of my professional journey, the ice began to thaw a bit. But not nearly enough. Play a Christmas song before Black Friday, and we were likely to have a good-natured, yet frosty exchange.

Then, a few years back, kids entered the picture. Even at my peak of my mistletoe and peppermint phase, I never subscribed to the theory that Christmas was just “for the kids.”

There was always so much more to it, so much more meaning behind the celebration than just a bunch of kids jumping on mom and pop’s bed at 5 a.m. before turning a beautifully laden tree into a squealing blizzard of wrapping paper shreds.

But after kids of my own arrived, the fog of my Christmas malaise began to lift, bit by bit.

The clearing, however, began in earnest when my oldest began to develop the ability to ask truly intelligent and penetrating questions about life in general, and particularly so when her inquiries centered on holiday-related themes.

 Jonathan Bilyk writes about the triumphs and travails of being a modernday dad who legitimately enjoys time with his family, while tolerating a dog that seems to adore him. He also doesn’t really like the moniker “Superdad” because it makes it sound like he wants to wear his undergarments on the outside of his pants. (Also, the cape remains on back order.)

Little by little, as I searched the my consciousness and memories for answers to her questions about religion, tradition and why I would hit “skip” every time “Wonderful Christmastime” played, you could say my heart grew a few sizes. More precisely, though, the holidays came into new focus, as I saw the scene through new eyes.

It would be too simple to say the joy of my pre-retail-job self returned. No, this was something different, an outlook on the season tempered by decades of experience, but still fueled by the joy that comes just as much from the giddiness of Christmas morning as it does from the magic of a performance of The Nutcracker ballet, or the quiet satisfaction of a shared smile amid the candlelight, singing carols in a church, followed by a quiet moment on the couch with a hot beverage, the kids nestled, all snug in their beds.

So will I let you use my car radio to play Christmas music on November 1? That would still be a no. But I just might be willing to take in a carol or two sometime between Veterans Day and Thanksgiving – as long as you don’t insist on “Wonderful Christmastime.” Then, that red glow you see in the distance will be my taillights, as I wish you a Happy Christmas, and to all, a good night.

JOEY’S “TAIL” Joey was brought into the clinic by a Good Samaritan who found him barely alive behind a dumpster one afternoon. He was completely emaciated, and he had a large, gaping wound near his groin. Joey needed immediate attention. Anderson's clinic staff and volunteers responded and did what they do best. On a day when they already had more than enough work and less than enough time to do it in, they came together as a team, working round-the- clock to save little Joey's life.

In order to insert a drain tube at the wound site, as well as a feeding tube to keep him alive, Joey needed to go under anesthesia, putting his life even more at risk. Thanks to Anderson's expert clinic team, Joey made it through surgery, but his fight to survive had only just begun.

Less than a week after surgery, Joey came down with an upper respiratory infection, which further exacerbated his problems. At this point, little Joey was fading fast. In a last ditch attempt to save Joey's life, our veternarian started him on a constant rate infusion of Clinicare - a food that dripped through the feeding tube at a slow, constant rate.

At night, one of our dedicated veterinarian technicians - Victoria took him home with her and continued to assist feed him. Each morning, she would bring him back to the clinic with her where the consistent rate infusion would begin again. After three weeks of this intensive care, little Joey finally was strong enough to eat on his own. By this time, Victoria had fallen in love with Joey and adopted him - making him a permanent part of her family.

Volunteers bring Christmas traditions to those with profound disabilities

For most, Christmas is synonymous with opening gifts.

There are those, however, who aren’t physically able to take part in that beloved tradition due to profound disabilities.

That’s where volunteers at Marklund in Geneva, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving all ages with serious and profound developmental disabilities, come in.

For decades, hundreds of volunteers have shown up Christmas Eve morning to bring joy, and get joy in return by giving Marklund’s residents hand-over-hand assistance tearing open their presents.

“It’s an eye-opening experience watching all those volunteers helping residents open their gifts,” says Cathy Nikrandt, manager of volunteer engagement at Marklund’s Geneva campus.“ It’s amazing. It’s become very popular with people who want to volunteer with their kids.”

Marklund, which opened in 1954, also has locations in Bloomingdale and Elgin, with a total of 174 residents, plus an accredited dayschool for individuals with profound developmental disabilities and children on the

autism spectrum. Residents use a wheelchair for mobility. Most can’t open a gift themselves.

Some need assistance from staff to feed themselves.

“We’re always looking for volunteers for our community outings,” Nikrandt says. Marklund has many other volunteer opportunities for individuals, families and staff teams.

“It is wonderful to see the smiles on not only residents’ faces but every single person that is there assisting them,” says Nikrandt, who has been volunteer manager for 15 years. “I see love and joy on both sides.

Tina Murdock of Elburn, heard about volunteering at Marklund through her church.

Two years ago she and her husband Jack, Jr. and sons Zachary, then 9 and Jack, then 8, volunteered at the event, and plan to again this year.

“I remember my first year, a man had came through the Batavia Rotary Club, in a suit, and he was down on the floor next to the resident, modeling gifts, holding the dress up so she could see it.”

The next year the man came dressed comfortably, sans suit, and has been coming every year since.

Volunteers must be 14 or older to volunteer on their own and come from all walks of life. “I have high school kids, stay-at-home moms, seniors, working people, pretty much everybody,” says Nikrandt, who solicits churches and businesses to set up giving trees with tags for each resident. Marklund also has a giving tree in its lobby through Dec. 21 at 1 south 450 Wyatt Drive, Geneva, Illinois.

“We were excited to do something for people who maybe don’t see a lot of visitors, especially at Christmas time,” Murdock says. “Doing it Christmas Eve meant even more to us because we spent the time as a family.”

The Murdocks helped resident Patricia open her gifts. “We instantly fell in love with her,” Murdock says. “She got so excited. She had a big smile, and we saw joy in my boys, too, in what we were doing. Whether you are motivated to contribute to a worthy charitable cause or thinking about helping family, let’s take a very brief look at some financial instruments you may want to consider using to help you make a difference.

 DIRECT GIFTING TO CHARITIES: Philanthropy is an important aspect of generational wealth transfer because it allows you to earn income tax deductions and transfer money out of your estate to avoid additional estate taxes. Although there are many strategies for philanthropic giving, the most common is through direct gifts. Even though this method of giving may seem straightforward, there are options for how you can choose to give and benefits to each.

Whether it’s through cash, securities, real estate or other assets, you can provide for a cause and receive tax benefits through direct gifts to charity.  PRIVATE FOUNDATIONS: For families interested in donating a considerable amount of wealth, setting up a private foundation may be a viable option.

Private foundations are completely taxexempt, although they can only grant up to a 30 percent income tax exemption rather than the 50 percent granted by direct donation.

Private foundations are typically managed by a board consisting of family members and

financial advisors, who define charitable goals and manage donations. They allow this board to act as intermediaries between the donor and the chosen charity. Private foundations provide a unique way for families to come together for philanthropy because they allow relatives to be named to the board of directors.  DONOR-ADVISED FUNDS: Donor-advised funds are designed to allow you to grow your donation to charity through investment. Donors, who can be individuals or groups, take donations and have a sponsor organization invest them. Although these sponsors charge fees for the creation and management of DAFs, the investment returns they produce help to build the value of the fund and generate more money for charity than a simple gift. In addition, DAFs have no minimum distribution requirements. In terms of generational wealth transfer, DAFs can be especially significant because they allow the donor to choose a successor advisor to continue the gifting tradition within the family.

While DAFs do have many tax benefits that private foundations do not, they also allow the donor less control. You should consider that the official controller of donor-advised funds is the sponsor, who retains the right to disregard a donor’s choices if he or she deems a recipient charity to be unqualified.  CUSTODIAL ACCOUNTS: Anyone can open a custodial account for anyone else under the age of 18. These are commonly known as UTMA Accounts (Uniform Transfers to Minors Act). The person who opens the account must name a custodian (which can be him or herself ) to manage the account with a fiduciary duty to the beneficiary. While the custodian controls the account and manages the investments, anyone can donate to it and there is no limit to how much can be contributed.

The beneficiary owns the assets immediately but cannot access them until he or she reaches the age of majority, which varies by state from age 18 to 21. The custodian is allowed to withdraw funds from the account before the beneficiary reaches the age of majority, but only if those funds are used for the benefit of the child (for

instance, for a new laptop or summer camp fees).

While some people see the flexibility of a custodial account as a benefit, others see it as a drawback. If you donate to a custodial account so that your child can go to college and then he or she decides not to, you have no say in how the money is spent. The beneficiary could squander the money at a casino and you would not have any legal authority to keep him or her from doing otherwise, despite contributing the money in the first place. Another potential drawback is the effect of the funds on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If the sole purpose of this account is for future college expenses you will want to talk with your financial adviser about other options.  KEEPING IT SIMPLE: These are quick overviews of common vehicles used for clients seeking to make an impact while leaving a personal legacy. When seeking to maximize the impact of your personal giving, work with your financial and tax advisers both so that you can make smart decisions and leverage your impact.

BATAVIAN MEG BERO WINS AU SPIRIT AWARD

Art museum director shares passion with students, community

atavia resident Meg Bero is the recipient of this year’s Aurora University Spirit Award, recognizing individuals for unselfish contributions and steadfast loyalty to the institution.

has exclusively Native American art. She’s excited about this spring’s exhibit, which is called “Becoming: Transformation in Native American Art, The Schingoethe Contemporary Collection.

“Meg Bero embodies the university’s commitment to excellence, character and scholarship,” university president Rebecca Sherrick says. “She is one of the finest educators I know.”

Once a month, Bero invites members of the university community to her special Art Space programs, where participants explore their own creative potential.

Nominations for the Spirit Award come from students, faculty, staff, trustees and alumni, and are reviewed by a panel that makes recipient recommendations to the university president each year.

“She gives of herself and her talents freely and joyfully,” Sherrick says.

For the past 20 years, Bero has been executive director of the university’s Schingoethe Center, which has an extensive Native American collection donated many years ago by an Aurora couple for which the museum was named.

As Schingoethe’s director, Bero has played a transformative leadership role, Sherrick says.

Thanks to Bero’s efforts, the Schingoethe Center recently was named a Smithsonian Affliliate, a status enjoyed by only a handful of Illinois museums and galleries. Through her relationship with the Smithsonian, Bero has booked speakers for Schingoethe including Smithsonian Institution collection curators.

As Shingoethe’s curator, Bero selects artists from across the country to exhibit at the museums. She includes Native American art selected by the artists from the collection to complement their works in the shows. In coordination with each show, Bero brings in speakers and other presenters to contribute programs related to the theme of each exhibit.

Each year, Bero stages one large non-Native American art exhibit and one show that

DON'T HANG UP YOUR HIKING BOOTS Winter offers beauty and enjoyment, so long as you prepare

By PETER STADALSKY Until the winter of 2017, hiking was always a three-season activity for me. It was that season a friend and I decided to explore the world of non-technical winter mountaineering by climbing summits in upstate New York.

The draw, for me, was a silent summit and 360-degree panoramic views of snow capped mountains. One of the great perks of winter hiking is that the trails are yours for the taking, because most people hang up their hiking boots for the winter.

There’s a saying around the hiker’s community, “there is no such thing as bad weather, just poor clothing choice.” I knew it was going to be cold in the Adirondacks, so I made sure I had quality layers and waterproof gear.

Layers are so important, because even in -20 degree weather, climbing up a mountain will make you sweat. And the last thing you want is to be soaking wet with sweat, miles deep in the frigid wilderness. The secret isn’t not getting cold, it’s being able to regulate your temperature. Being able to add and subtract layers is key. The epiphany I had was that cold weather hiking is not a problem, but cold weather stopping is. Every time we stopped for a snack or water I could feel my temperature dropping. Staying on the move was the ticket to warmth.

We climbed Cascade Mountain in the Adirondack Park. The ambient temperature that day was -20 degrees. At the summit, with the wind chill, it was about -50 degrees.

My phone instantly shut down as I tried to capture some panoramic shots at the summit. It was necessary to cover every inch of skin with protection, for frostbite creeps in within minutes at that temperature. It sounds miserable, but I never felt cold. I’ve been colder running to my car in the morning during the Chicago winter. When we got back to the car I noticed icicles hanging from my beard in the reflection off the car window, but I left them, thinking they looked pretty cool.

There were a few pieces of gear that are handy for winter hiking. First are the microspikes.

These are half-inch spikes that slip over the bottom of your boots. This helps gain traction on the rocky summits covered in ice. Snowshoes also are necessary if there is a fresh, deep powder, but we never had to use them. A good pair of ski goggles help keep eyes protected when the wind picks up. I also purchased new insulated hiking boots rated to -40. They are waterproof in addition to being warm.

One issue we ran into was our water bottles freezing solid. (Those sub-zero temps don’t play around.) I asked a local what he did to prevent his water from freezing on long winter

hikes and he responded, “Water? I don’t drink water.” I shook my head and replied, “well then what do you drink?” He dropped his chin with an eyebrow raised, “Whiskey don’t freeze, son.”

I decided to explore other, less dehydrating methods. One hack I found was to keep your bottle buried in your pack surrounded by extra layers. Or if I had all my layers on, I just kept my water inside my coat pressed up against my stomach to keep it toasty.

I used to get the winter blues from not getting out in nature enough, and I’m glad I started to explore ways to adventure in the cold months.

Each season holds its own beauty, and I decided to seek out winter’s, instead of being bummed out for a quarter of the year. If you’re into hiking, winter mountaineering is not a far leap in terms of skill. A liberal serving of research will do you well, but don’t let that snow and wind keep you off the trail. u Peter Stadalsky is an Aurora resident and adventurer.
