NOTE Finally, spring is here!

The days of cold chills and gray skies are nearly behind us, and after months of winter weather that began in the middle of November, I couldn’t be happier to hear the birds singing in the trees.

It also means two things (at least for me): spring cleaning and warm weather wardrobes. I spent a good three hours of “quality time” with my closet recently, tearing through the items I’ve missed wearing for the last months – the bright cheery colors, breezy fabrics and open toed shoes that just make you feel a little lighter when you wear them – hoping they fit the same and still were stylish enough to carry me into summer 2019.

What became all too clear was that I will need some refreshers, some updates and replacements, so I was psyched to see all the great wardrobe fixes available across the Tri-Cities right now. We have so many great fashions at the ready for you from local boutiques right near home. There are plenty of warm sunny colors to choose from, and you’re certain to get in the spirit of spring with a few new items in your wardrobe.

And once that closet is cleaned, no doubt the rest of the house is calling! De-cluttering is key this time of year – out with the old and in with the news! And the shops and designers around our towns have clever fixes and all the trends to help you clean out, brighten up and make your home a haven of style and functionality.

be more costly, but for some, that’s a price they’re willing to pay for the kitchen of their dreams.

Lynn Havlicek, owner of Geneva Cabinet Gallery, says that color remains one of the biggest trends.

Many homeowners are adding a little color to complement the white or natural wood surfaces of their cabinets, which remain popular. Some homeowners with white kitchens grow bored, so the addition of an alluring second color can modernize the kitchen without requiring any major renovations.

“Colors can come and go while white has stayed in fashion for awhile, just like grays have been around,” she says. “We’re seeing people combine white with some other color, like navy blue or sky blue, and green is kind of hot right now, as is taupe.”

And when it comes to the working side of kitchen design, integrated

appliances are key, creating a more homogenous design in the space. Also higher end appliances and professional-grade remain popular, Havlicek says.

“A steam oven is a new thing we’ve seen the last few years which is getting more popular all the time,” she says. Those who are truly into the art of cooking are eyeing items that can make their workplace in the kitchen their ideal place to be, and effect, Havlicek believes, of the popularity of network cooking shows.

“More men are interested in that and that’s where the professionaltype of appliances come in, as well as the sinks that are more functional and stuff like that,” Havlicek says.

The latest trend in countertops is Quartzite, which is a natural, metamorphic rock that originates as sandstone. It might sound out

of the Stone Age, but adding it to your kitchen will give you a look for 2020 and beyond. Havlicek and others in the industry have recognized it as it continues to gain traction as a way to modernize traditional kitchens.

“Quart countertops are still a big one but the trend is kind of moving to Quartzite,” she says.

“It’s a natural stone and really beautiful. It’s more translucent in going back to the real stone, but it’s pretty expensive.”

Other items of note include floating shelves, more windows, and less upper cabinets, she says.

“Mixing metals with stainless and vintage is still popular today, as is doing wood walls. With ceilings, we’re seeing a lot of the barn wood.”

Bathrooms Bathroom might have the word “bath” in it, but many are trending

toward big showers these days according to Sue McDowell, coowner of McDowell Remodeling in Geneva. Just don’t call them shower rooms.

“Big showers are the thing,” she says. ‘We’re taking the big garden tubs out and larger showers are where it’s at! It’s been around for awhile now but there are still a ton of people that don’t have showers.”

Many have chosen to convert their bathtub into a shower because it works for the entire household.

“It’s a cool trend– if you want to a call it a trend – because it works for all ages,” McDowell says. “It’s like a spa… relaxing and peaceful and wonderful, and if you’re aging in place you can add seating and a grab bar for safety.”

Tubs aren’t necessarily being dumped in landfills because of a huge interest in showers either.

In fact, some homeowners are installing freestanding tubs.

There’s no need for Calgon to “take you away” if you’re looking to add a tub where you can relax with a deep soak and leave all your worries behind, except for maybe worrying about falling asleep while submerged.

“I will say that tubs aren’t completely gone,” McDowell says. “If someone is adding a tub or wanted to keep a tub, freestanding tubs are in. In the old tubs the water was cold by the time you got in there. We now know how to plum deeper tubs.”

McDowell has torn out a lot of pink and aqua tile from bathrooms from the 1950s and ’60s during her career. While those colors have been out for a long, long time, many are choosing taupes and neutrals and blending the master bathroom with the whole suite.

“There are so many tile choices which is really awesome,” McDowell says. “It lends itself to the big showers. The big walls in the showers give you the ability to do something. Similarly, porcelain that looks like wood remains a top choice.

“It’s been popular for a while,” she says.

“There’s a lot of porcelain that looks like wood with wood grain right now and I think it will continue to be popular.”

General Living Spaces Wallpaper, vibrant colors and seeking professional advice about modifying general living spaces are three design trends that are big today.

And before you can say, “Wallpaper, seriously?” Remember this isn’t the flower-power ’60s and ’70s stuff, nor the expansive florals or border-crazy era of the 1980s. And, thankfully, there’s no sign that ferns or wall-to-wall shag carpeting are coming back anytime soon either.

“Wallpaper is popular since it can really reflect the client’s own personality and can create drama in a space,” says Ann Heck-Lewis, senior interior designer for Haven Interiors in Geneva. “Vibrant color is popular since it can create a mood and add interest to the all-neutral palettes.”

There are a variety of ways to add vibrant color to a room, with painting the walls probably the most popular while also affordable and not the most challenging upgrade. Additionally, you can add bright accessories, such as a colored lamp base or shade, artwork or a colorful rug among other options.

“Homeowners should consider these trends because it can help freshen up their rooms,” she says. “And all of these trends have been around for a long time going in and out of popularity. We feel that they have made a strong comeback and are here to stay.”

HERE’S SOME OF MY FAVORITE SCREENING PLANT FAMILIES: DECIDUOUS SHRUBS

(LOSE LEAVES IN WINTER): VIBURNUM – just about every plant in this large family makes a great screen. One of the best is Arrowwood Viburnum as they grow fast, are narrow, and are thickly branched. I also like a newer variety called ‘Brandywine’ as it has gorgeous fall color and berries for the birds.

NINEBARK – ‘Amber Jubilee’, ‘Center Glow’, and ‘Coppertina’ are excellent screening shrubs that can get up to 8’ tall. Burgundy foliage, white flowers, good fall color, low maintenance, fast growing – there are also some smaller versions if you don’t need to screen a big view.

FORSYTHIA – common but for good reason as they are one of the fastest growing, toughest shrubs out there. All of the newer introductions bloom later and are not as unruly as the old fashioned version. Try ‘Show Off’ or ‘Gold Cluster’ for great yellow spring color and a thick hedge.

PRIVET – an old fashioned hedge plant that has been greatly improved with new introductions. ‘Golden Ticket’ has beautiful lime green/yellow foliage and ‘Straight Talk’ is a super skinny version that is great for narrow spots.

ROSE OF SHARON – a solid, fast growing, dark green plant full of hundreds of colorful tropical blooms from July – October? Sign me up!

All new varieties of this old favorite are seedless and easier to grow.

Most can grow up to 10-12’ tall but there are a few dwarf forms that stay under 6’. My favorites are ‘Bali’ and ‘Hawaii’ – but there are many more!

EVERGREEN:

ARBORVITAE – the old standby for a reason, durable, attractive, several types and colors, newer introductions are not as easily damaged by ice and snow and deer – look for ‘Green Giant’, ‘Techny’, and ‘Spring Grove’

Let us grow them into the garden of your dreams.

HEMLOCK – good screening for shady, protected spots, woodland areas, will not tolerate open space so tuck in the woods for best results JUNIPER – upright blue and green varieties, versatile and tough, full sun and wind tolerant - ‘Wichita Blue’ and ‘Canaert’ are two of my faves YEWS – slower growing but Hicks Yew can make a nice narrow, tall screen for shade or sun (not deer resistant)

DECIDUOUS TREES:

Many shade and ornamental trees have narrow canopies for tight spots (columnar forms of trees like ‘Regal Prince’ Oak or ‘Firespire’ Hornbeam), dense leaf structure for privacy (Japanese Tree Lilacs, Magnolias), attractive characteristics in addition to performing a job (crabapples) and more! When choosing a larger tree, it’s best to discuss with one of our sales staff so you can find the best tree for your spot!

VINES:

Flowering vines are excellent for two dimensional screens like trellises or arbors. Some vines are smaller (i.e. Clematis) and others are more permanent (i.e. Wisteria or Trumpet Vine). Choose the best vine for the size of your structure as some can get quite large and woody.

There are some really neat ways to use 2D structures for privacy and screening – of course Pinterest is full of ideas but many things can be custom built based on your spot also.

And for McCann, that means he’s building community, within his own community. McCann lives in downtown Geneva not far from his business, and has children in Geneva schools.

Spring is almost here, and EverGreen Landscape Associates in Hampshire is ready to service all of your landscape design and lawn maintenance needs.

EverGreen Landscape owner, Bob Stell has been working in the landscape industry since the 1980s. He started the company in 1995. The company has two designers, Carol Arand and Rebecca LaBarre, who meet with residential clients. They listen to the clients’ needs, budget and goals for the property when creating their designs, which can range from simple shrub and tree plantings to firepits and pergolas.

“We can install complete outdoor living spaces, including brick paver driveways, patios and walkways, built-in grills, ponds and waterfalls and outdoor lighting,” Stell says. “We don’t do cookie-cutter designs; we help our clients come up with creative, innovative solutions. Our number one priority is having satisfied clients.”

The designers use CAD drawings for all the designs, which can be anything from a black and white rendering to a color rendered 3D design showing the project from many perspectives. Once the client is satisfied, EverGreen will install the design.

My outing this month took me to the modern environment of Puebla in downtown St. Charles

Starting with a guacamole with a side of green bell pepper, I kicked up this lunch without too many carbs from those delicious but often carb-heavy tortilla chips.

I have to admit, I did sneak a couple in just for the flavor and crunch, but this trick of mine with the sliced bell pepper creates a punch of flavor with keeping my waistline intact.

Then, I mixed it up with a queso fundido, which is baked chihuahua cheese. You can add chorizo, shrimp or portabellos to it. All of those keep this filled with protein and fat, which is on trend these days and keeps the dish leaning toward a keto-friendly concept.

But, the pièce de résistance, oh my, was the chile relleno. It was the largest and tastiest one I have ever had. It truly was enough for two or three to share. Each bite was sliced with melted gooey cheese seeping out with flavors to match from the tomato sauce and

cream that just screamed, “eat me again and again”! Needless to say, I could only finish about half, but had taken my wife, so we both were content with the dish. Ask the doctor Our practice focus is to care for patients to help them and tailor their care individually with current therapies. We receive a lot of questions from patients, friends, and even just those we know casually on many healthcare topics of the day. Here are some common questions we have recently been asked:

Q: Celiac disease and gluten issues confuse me. I wonder, what is the difference?

A: Gluten, which is found in wheat, barley, rye and other

products that are processed at times or canned, is the culprit in this scenario. Intolerance to gluten and celiac disease are treated the same with avoidance of gluten.

However, their consequences on the body are different.

While gluten intolerance creates symptoms that can be bloating, gas, lethargy, diminished energy and bowel changes, it is not associated with long-term damage of the lining of the intestinal tract.

Celiac disease, however, will damage the finger like villi that cause absorption of nutrients in the small intestine.

This can create long term weight loss, malabsorption, and even death from refractory cases or specific T-cell lymphoma associated with this disease.

Q: I get slight rectal bleeding once in a while. That’s okay, right?

A: Rectal bleeding many times can be from a non-

cancerous cause like a fissure or hemorrhoid. That being said it should be checked by a doctor. Please don’t ignore the symptom and present to your doctor or gastroenterologist. In my career, I have found young late teens and 20-something patients with colon neoplasms as well. These patients felt their bleeding was nothing early on, or were told to use softer toilet paper. This is definitely not a symptom to ignore. Colon cancer screening is for both men and women. It is preventable, beatable and treatable. Screening starts at 45 unless you have symptoms prior at whatever age or family history of polyps or cancer. This is a symptom that merits getting screened.

Q: Sun tanning, I love to do it. I hear tanning machines and sun tanning are different on the skin. I want to look good in my swimsuit, what do you suggest for best health.

A: Tanning is fun and creates a nice change in skin that many women and men prefer. However, the effects on the skin, which are related to UV light exposure can lead to skin problems. While the good effects of tanning include the vitamin D benefits, they are limited to only 15 to 20 minutes of sunlight exposure (not in tanning outfits). But tanning is part of our current culture and lifestyle. Using sun block if in excess sun and avoiding excess tanning is certainly better.

In addition, I recommend self skin exams at least once a month if you tan. Skin exams are important like breast self exams and colonoscopies for women. For men, they are important like prostate screening and colonoscopies. The earlier detection of a skin lesion that is different in shape, size, color, or irregular borders permits early removal and treatment.

Instead, use your air conditioner and make sure the filter is clean. Change your filter every three months and use one with a MERV rating of 11 or 12.

With a few commonsense tactics, you can get ahead of your allergies and keep them in the rearview mirror all season long.

In her latest cookbook, subtitled Authentic Flavors and Modern Home Cooking from My Kitchen to Yours, Kochilas includes recipes inspired by her travels and knowledge of Greece and its products. The book includes starters, main courses and desserts.

“My goal . . . is to share great Greek recipes for home cooks, some regional classics and my own interpretations and innovations,” the celebrity chef writes in a brief introduction. She prides herself on providing recipes that call for accessible ingredients and straightforward step-by-step instructions.

RETRO FETA-STUFFED GRILLED CALAMARI (SERVES 4) • 1 pound squid, preferably fresh, cleaned (6 to 8 pieces 6 to 8 inches long) • 2 Tablespoons extra-virgin Greek olive oil, plus more as needed • 1 red or yellow onion, chopped • 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped • 1 ½ cups crumbled Greek feta • ½ cup coarsely grated graviera cheese or any mild nutty sheep’s-milk cheese such as Swiss Gruyere

• Finely grated zest of 1 lemon • ½ cup fresh ricotta cheese, drained • ½ cup chopped fresh dill • ½ cup chopped fresh mint • 1 medium egg • 1 teaspoon crushed pink peppercorns • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 2 to 6 tablespoons plain dried bread • 2 lemons quartered

Keep the cleaned squid in the refrigerator until ready to uaw.

In a medium skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until wilted and lightly golden. Stir in the garlic. Transfer the mixture to a bowl and let cool.

Add all the cheeses, the lemon zest, dill, mint and egg to the bowl with the onion and toss to combine. Season with the pink peppercorns and salt and black pepper to taste. (The mixture will likely be salty with the feta, so you might not need to add any.)

Stir in 2 tablespoons of the breadcrumbs to help bind the mixture. Test it by shaping a small ball with your hands; if it is still too loose to hold its shape, add more breadcrumbs, 1 tablespoon at a time, until firm enough. Cover and refrigerate the mixture for 30 minutes to help firm it up.

Remove the liquid and filling from the refrigerator. Stuff each of the squid tubes with enough of the filling to come up to about 1/4 inch from the top so that when the stuffed squid shrinks during cooking, it doesn’t burst. (Using a toothpick, close the open end of the tube securely.

Heat a grill until quite hot or heart a grill pan over high heat. Brush the grill grates or pan with a little olive oil. Place the stuffed squid and tentacles (separately) on the grill or in the hot grill pan and cook 5 to 7 minutes, turning with kitchen tongs a few times, until lightly browned all over. Transfer to a platter.

t r i d s a d l O ROOTED IN FAMILY LEGACY, GARDENING BRIDGES THE GENERATIONS With JONATHAN BILYK

his time of year always triggers some of the warmest memories.

As the sun gains strength, at last banishing the cold and snow back to where it belongs – Canada, I believe - the green shoots springing up through the warming soil portend the prospect of better things to come: Days spent outside, boots caked not in snow, ice and salt, but rich, black dirt, the back of the neck dusty, sweaty and sun-kissed, the back sore, but for a purpose with the promise of a payoff.

If 16-year-old me could meet 40-something me, there’s no doubt he’d think this old dude is lame.

But he’d also be stunned to know he’d grow up to actually enjoy gardening.

Or, on reflection, I’d like to think he’d realize it’s maybe not that crazy, after all.

Some of my favorite memories of my grandmother are of visiting with her as she worked in her enormous garden. Perhaps in reality, it actually wasn’t all that big. But in my mind’s eye, it remains huge – easily one of the biggest gardens I’ve ever visited.

Stepping through the red wooden gate, a series of paving stones carried visitors through rows of peas, beans, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, squash, you name it. A strip of dirt for potatoes lined the garden’s periphery, along with plants that never failed to deliver a bowl of delicious raspberries on each visit in the summer.

Elsewhere in the yard, flowers released their scents and kaleidoscope of colors, delighting the

senses – and setting the stage for a firm scolding in a thick German accent every time my brother and I played catch and the ball would, inevitably, land among a stand of dahlias, gardenias or other blossoms.

My grandmother left us nearly 14 years ago. But every spring, the promise of another gardening season restores those memories.

My own gardening journey began about 17 years ago, when I bought my first house.

The effort would certainly have drawn patronizing praise from my grandmother. But there’s little doubt she would have lent her hearty laugh and wry smile to those meager early attempts at cultivating good eats from the small patch outside that first house.

The master gardener title certainly remains far out of reach. But I’d like to think her smile would be more genuine and the twinkle in her eye more approving of my more recent forays into vegetable production – particularly when that process has included my girls.

Thus far, their involvement has been limited, restricted mainly by their seeming aversion to the prospect of kneeling in mud or working out in the summer sun.

But this spring, we’re trying a different tack: flowers.

As cutting grass holds ever less appeal for this time-starved, aging dad, the prospect of replacing swaths of turf with colorful, sweet-smelling, pollinator-attracting flower beds has only gained traction my brain.

Perhaps the idea of raising stands of lilies, daisies, dahlias and gardenias will appeal more to them than has producing a bit of edible greenery, and lead them to more favorably respond to dad’s invitation to play in the dirt.

Who knows?

But just as with the vegetable garden, there certainly will be much trial and even more error.

• Laughter will be heard.

• Sweat will be poured.

• Plants will wilt.

• But others will blossom and bloom.

And in the end, perhaps we can, together, produce a more beautiful backyard, and in the process further cultivate this family legacy, so one day, perhaps, the sight of green shoots springing up through the soil will trigger their own warm, sunny childhood memories, as well.  Jonathan Bilyk writes about the triumphs and travails of being a modernday dad who legitimately enjoys time with his family, while tolerating a dog that seems to adore him. Restoration EFFORT AT FERSON CREEK FEN ALLOWS RARE ECOSYSTEM TO THRIVE

Nestled between Route 31 and the Fox River on the northern side of St. Charles is Ferson Creek Fen -- about 50 acres of nature preserve supporting an uncommon yet vital ecosystem in the St. Charles community.

While many residents may have visited Ferson Creek Fen, they may not understand the importance of preserving and maintaining this rare natural resource.

Fens are a type of wetland, which are rapidly disappearing across the country.

According to the Illinois Natural History Survey, more than half of the country’s original wetland area has been lost, with more than 200,000 acres disappearing each year. And Illinois has lost more than 90 percent of its original wetland acres.

Fens are vital in helping reduce ooding and affect the quality of water in the area.

This is accomplished from the topography of the fen, the soil and the plants that

are rooted there. Similar to most fens, Ferson Creek Fen sits on a slope providing a continual flow of water through the soil. This nutrient-rich soil feeds the plant life of the sedge meadow and acts like a huge sponge, slowing the water from dispersing to other areas of the community. Additionally, these conditions support a specific population of plants and animals – species that wouldn’t survive in another ecosystem.

The St. Charles Park District understands the importance of maintaining Ferson Creek Fen, so it won’t suffer the same fate of many fens before it. Over the years they have dedicated time and resources to keep this habitat thriving, and recently received a grant in cooperation with the Illinois Nature Preserve Commission and Illinois Department of Natural Resources, to increase the restoration work over the next two years.

“The grant is a step forward and a boost in what we can accomplish.

A little prevention goes a long way,” says Jill Voegtle, St. Charles Park District Ecological Restoration Supervisor.

“When Ferson Creek Fen was dedicated as a nature preserve in 1989 it was the highest quality sedge community out there. We need to preserve the most precious of what we have; you can’t recreate it once it’s gone,” Voegtle stresses.

The grant of $16,000 over two years will target invasive plant control such as purple loosestrife, cattails and reed canary grass.

This will be in addition to the regular restoration Voegtle’s team completes throughout the year. In

January, they removed plants that were encroaching on the fen such as dogwood trees by the blacktop area and silver maple trees, weed willows and glossy buckthorn by the river.

“There’s a misconception that you shouldn’t ever cut down trees,” Voegtle says. “But when trees in the sedge meadow prohibit sunlight from coming in, the native plants will die, and that affects the entire ecosystem.”

For example, skippers, swamp sparrows and chorus and leopard frogs need the conditions of the sedge meadow or wetland to survive. Some of the other species that live in the sedge meadow include bumblebees, swallow tail and monarch butterflies, soft shell turtles, great blue herons and beavers.

In the long run, allowing non-native woody species to grow without control will kill the fen. The side effects would go beyond the fen and its lost biodiversity. Preserving the Ferson Fen directly impacts the community since a healthy fen filters and cleans the water before it reaches the river. The healthier the river, the healthier the whole community will be.

When Something Happens To An Owner

S

ara* was a young, promising orthodontist who was invited to buy into an established practice. She was thrilled with the opportunity and signed the paperwork she was provided including a Buy-Sell agreement.

It was explained to her that if something should happen to any of the firm’s partners that this would ensure that the rest of the owners would not be stuck with an unintended owner who could not contribute to the business. This seemed to make sense and as she had no experience with agreements like this she trusted that the other partners knew what they were doing.

Six months later when one of the partners was unexpectedly killed in an automobile accident she learned that she should have asked more questions. She learned that this agreement was “unfunded” and suddenly she was faced with a requirement that she cut a six-figure check in order to buy out her portion of the deceased partner’s ownership position.

As she was still paying off student loans, this dream situation had suddenly become a nightmare.

Due to space constraints we cannot cover all the key considerations that should be taken into account here. Suffice to say that working with a qualified financial advisor and legal counsel is highly recommended. They should be able to walk you through everything from plan structure (ex. Cross-Purchase Vs Entity Agreement) to valuation methods for the business. What we do want to take a moment to discuss is the act of funding the plan.

Funding A Buy-Sell Agreement

For the remaining owners to buy out a former owner’s business interest they must have funds available. During this stressful time owners do not need the burden of having this additional business expense.

The easiest way to avoid this scenario is to set up funding for the agreement as soon as it is established.

There are various options for funding a Buy-Sell agreement. Some may be tempted to simply establish a reserve account. Another option, which also carries heavy risk, is to wait and simply take out a loan should something happen to one of the owners. The strategy that carries the least risk however is using life insurance and disability insurance to fund the agreement. It ensures that funds are immediately available when a crisis occurs and typically the cost of funding is comparatively attractive.

Now What?

A Buy-Sell agreement can be essential to the survival and efficient management of a company. By establishing and funding the agreement early on and reviewing it as your business changes, you can ensure the best possible outcome for your business no matter what the future may bring. Make it a priority this week to either establish one or review yours.

Fourth Leg - Active duty foster program, where Anderson Animal Shelter fosters and provides care through its MVP volunteer network for pets of active duty or reservists being deployed . Anderson anticipates the average length of time in foster will be six months and will cover the cost of care for these animals. In the near future, extended fostering option to others in need shall be added.

There are four legs to the program.

First Leg - All honorably discharged veterans, active duty, and reservists are eligible to receive 50% off an adoption, as a way to thank military members for their service. Anderson anticipates about 100 adoptions in 2019 - so please help share the word about this program.

Second Leg - MVP volunteers are trained in the methods of positive reinforcement training, to further more adoptions and save lives.

Third Leg - Behavioral foster program, where MVP volunteers foster special-needs animals. The volunteers are provided with training and support from the program’s coordinator - along with Anderson’s clinic and behavior staff.

TIPS AND TRICKS TO TRAVELING LIGHT STORY AND PHOTO BY PETER STADALSKY It doesn’t matter if my trip is days, weeks, or months long; one philosophy to which I always hold true, is travel light. Regardless of duration, I’m only bringing one backpack. With my current packing system, I can be packed and ready to climb a mountain or cross a foreign land in about 30 minutes. Over the years, I’ve whittled down a simple, yet functional system of packing and traveling light, without feeling too deprived while I’m out adventuring. Here are some tips on how to lighten up and simplify your travel packing to maximize your experience without being bogged down by your stuff.

 SIZE DOESN’T MATTER

For the most part, weight is more important that size. (Unless you are planning on traveling with your pool table, then it’s both.) Instead of thinking about what you have room for in you backpack or suitcase, think about weight. The lighter you can get your bag, the easier it will be to lug around and the less it will serve as an annoyance.

There is one very important relationship you must understand: Comfort and weight are inversely proportional. The lighter you go, the less creature comforts you have. The comfier you pack, the more you’re weighted down. One thing you’ve probably noticed on returning home from a trip is

that you didn’t touch half the stuff you packed. My tip here: only allow yourself one bag, and watch the weight of things you pack.

 CLOTHING

Overpacking clothing is one of the most common mistakes people make. Clothes consume space and weight quickly. And in case you haven’t heard, they have washing machines all over the world.

Don’t be scared to do a load of laundry on your trip. You can even pay 10 bucks and a hotel will do it for you. Undies and socks, sure don’t skimp, but no one is going to notice if you wear the same shirt to dinner two or three times. For 10 days, it’s not hard to get by with two pairs of pants, five shirts, a sweater, and a jacket. I can’t express enough how important reducing clothing is if you want to lighten your load. Also, spare yourself from accessories, live naked and free for once from jewelry and silly hats! This tip: see if you can cut your total packed clothes in half.

 PACKING TECHNIQUES

This is where your wasted hours of childhood playing Tetris come in handy; packing tricks. If you pack an extra pair of shoes, stuff them with socks, chargers, nail clippers, or whatever weird things you bring. Rolling your shirts and pants saves space, and don’t be scared to compress

your belongings (minus toothpaste). I’m a huge fan of stuff sacks. They separate my belongings into categories and help me compress everything to conserve space. If you’re backpacking, put the heaviest stuff at the bottom, and those few frequently used items in the top pouch. In a nutshell: select a smaller bag and smash it all in.

 FINAL THOUGHTS

We all truly need so much less than we believe.

The overarching lesson here is that we find comfort in extra stuff, but it’s highly unnecessary.

It’s fun to strip away as much as possible, while managing to get by. People often are surprised at how little they need and how stressful excess can be. There is a ancient principle of subtracting from our lives to increase happiness, rather than adding.
