AIM Physical Therapy in Sugar Grove Private practice and Locally owned: Means no “big box” therapy treatment, longer one-onone time with your therapist with YOUR goals in mind. What is Physical Therapy? Whether you are looking for a great Physical Therapy clinic or just interested in knowing more about what physical therapy is, we hope this article helps to answer both questions! AIM Physical therapy is located just off Route 47, north of Aldi’s in Sugar Grove. We’re a private practice owned by four Licensed Physical Therapists who have practiced in the area over 20 years. In addition, we have selectively hired 7 other experienced therapists who perfectly round out our staff: You will find a therapist here that will be a good fit for the issue you’re seeking therapy to address. We have specialists in Women’s Health; Vertigo and balance issues; and Parkinson’s; You don’t need to have had an injury to benefit from PT. We treat anything from patients with debilitating neck or back pain, to patients who just want to return to feeling confident on their feet, or patients who want to return to running,

skiing, or other sports. If you’re struggling with pain or any loss of function, we want to hear about it and want to help you. Even if you didn’t have success elsewhere, don’t give up. Physical Therapy is not the same at every clinic! How are we different at AIM? First, we’re all experienced manual therapists. That means you get hands on therapy. If your muscles are tight and sore, we’re going to work on releasing those tissues. If your pelvis isn’t quite aligned or you have a shoulder that doesn’t move well, we’re going to gently work to mobilize the joint so it’s aligned and can move again. Exercise is a necessary part of physical therapy, but you may need to address

other issues first before the exercise is fully effective. And it doesn’t have to be painful. The old saying, “No pain, no gain,” doesn’t always apply. Second, we don’t rush you through an assembly line at AIM. When is the last time a medical professional spent a full 45 minutes working with you? We do that with every appointment at AIM Physical Therapy. Each appointment will consist of your therapist assessing where you’re at that day: have you gained motion or strength? Are you in more, or less pain? Are you reaching your functional goals? He or she will then work on addressing pain or any lack of motion, strength or function with specific treatments that may include soft tissue massage, stretching, strengthening, mobilization, balance exercises, and education on posture, anatomy or exercises to do at home. All that takes time, and we give you that time at AIM. Third, community. We’re a community of professionals who really enjoy working together; and we’re working together with you, and for you. Don’t settle for anything less. Call your team at AIM Physical Therapy to learn more or make an initial appointment.

The Reserve of Geneva

Many Senior Living communities had to drastically change how they provided services to residents and the amenities they were able to offer throughout the pandemic. The Reserve of Geneva is no different, however, after receiving their final dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine on February 12, residents and staff are looking forward to getting back to normal – as much as is possible. During the pandemic, residents and staff adjusted to social distancing and wearing their community-provided masks; social activities and in-person dining came to a halt. Luckily, The Reserve’s spacious courtyard provided a beautiful space for family visits during the warmer months. Bridget Shaeffer, Executive Director of The Reserve of Geneva, said, “We were very lucky this year and never experienced an outbreak of Covid-19, however, like everyone else, we are looking forward to being able to resume our normally busy social schedule.” The Reserve of Geneva is a 55+ Independent Living Community offering options for home care for those needing it such as Home Health and on-site therapy services. Shaeffer gives an enormous amount of credit to her team of dedicated staff members who kept resident safety top of mind; everyone pitched in with extra cleaning, sanitizing, and being extra

support for residents. “We started going to the pharmacies and grocery stores for pickup orders for residents as a way to help them stay home and stay safe,” said Shaeffer, “and we became creative in the ways we scheduled family visits. It helped immensely that residents were very safety-conscious and understood that

the changes we made were for their protection.” Soon, the sounds of Happy Hour and birthday parties will once again fill the community rooms. Life at The Reserve of Geneva will soon be back to normal, and those living and working there are looking forward to making new friends as new residents begin to move in.

How exercise can help you live longer There are many reasons to get in shape. Weight loss is a prime motivator, as is reversing a negative health effect, such as high cholesterol or increased diabetes risk. Routine exercise also can improve life expectancy. WebMD says exercise keeps the body and brain healthy. That’s why exercise should be an important component of daily life no matter one’s age. Research published in the journal Immune Aging found that how people age is 75 percent lifestyle and only 25 percent genetics, which underscores the importance of the lifestyle choices people make.

Cardiorespiratory fitness

Many health experts say that cardiorespiratory fitness may be just as valuable a metric to determine overall health as blood pressure and lipid levels. People with a high aerobic capacity can deliver oxygen to tissues and cells efficiently to fuel exercise, according to data published in 2014 in the journal Aging & Disease. In a study involving 11,335 women, researchers compared

V02 max, also known as aerobic capacity, in women with mortality data. Women who were fit from a cardiovascular perspective had a lower death rate from all causes, irrespective of the women’s weight.

Manage stress and mood

Exercise has direct stress-busting benefits that can promote longevity. The Mayo Clinic says physical activity can increase the production of endorphins, which are the body’s feel-good neurotransmitters. In addition, exercise can imitate the effects of stress, helping the body adjust its flight or fight response accordingly, and help them cope with mildly stressful situations. While engaged in exercise, people may forget about their problems as they are focused on the activity at hand.

Improve bone health

Strength training and physical activity can stave off the effects of frailty and osteoporosis, which affects bone strength. A study published in the Journal of Internal Medicine in 2017 found

that hip fractures are associated with diminished quality of life and survival among the elderly. One in three adults aged 50 and over dies within 12 months of suffering a hip fracture, and older adults have a five- to eight-times greater risk of dying within three months following a hip fracture. Building muscle strength, balance and bone density through exercise can reduce falls and frailty, helping to prevent fracture-related health risks.

Addresses sarcopenia

The health and wellness resource Healthline defines sarcopenia as the loss of muscle mass specifically related to aging. Doctors once considered this muscle loss inevitable, and it can affect stamina and lead to weakness. However, new indications suggest that exercise is the main treatment regimen for sarcopenia, particularly resistance training. This is designed to improve muscle strength and help balance hormone levels by turning protein into energy for older adults. These are just some of the ways exercise can help older adults live longer, healthier lives.

Elderday Center “Stand up in the presence of the aged, show respect for the Elderly, and revere your God. I am the Lord” Leviticus 19:32. This sentiment was drilled into me by my mother from a very young age. The importance of honoring our Elders, those who have paved the way and paid a price for our opportunities to run hard after our dreams, a constant reminder that I will always be stepping on the building blocks laid by their hard work and sacrifice. Simple yet profound and clear marching orders and the foundation of Elderday Home of Seniors helping Seniors Fox Valley model of service to our Pearls (Seniors). It is our honor to serve you! At Elderday Center we have been blessed to serve the Pearls of our community for 30 years through our Therapeutic Adult Day Services Program. Even in the face of Covid 19 and needing to shut down our onsite services for 3 months, we found a way to stay connected with our members, providing them daily virtual services. I am glad to announce that we are alive and well with our doors wide open to serve your loved ones and have immediate openings for new members. Elderday Center’s therapeutic daily activity program provides daytime structure for up to 35 participants. Providing nutritious lunch as well as two snacks each day, along with therapeutic social activities, music therapy, expressive art activities, therapeutic activities with pets, exercises, and activities of daily living. Our Pearls are well cared for. We are also very excited to provide in-home compassionate care to our Pearls through Seniors Helping Seniors Fox Valley (SHS). SHS has been serving the Fox Valley area for 6 years and provides quality care for seniors who want to stay home. As the name denotes 90% of our caregivers are seniors 60 years and above. For many of our caregivers they see this as an extension of their personal ministry and a way to keep invested in the lives of some of our most precious members of society, our Pearls. This new

venture will allow us to further address the national initiative of helping our seniors “age in place” as long as possible. We currently have caregiver positions open in Seniors Helping Seniors and would welcome a call to find out more about this position. How often to see the doctor

Routine health checkups are a key part of staying healthy. Older adults may feel like they’re always visiting one doctor or another. But what is an acceptable frequency for doctor appointments? The answer isn’t always so cut and dry, and many health professionals have mixed feelings even among themselves over the magic number. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends adults over the age of 65 visit the doctor more than twice as often as 18- to 44-year-olds. According to Paul Takahashi, a physician at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., adults should see their primary care physicians at least once a year to make sure diseases are being properly managed and to stay current on preventative screenings. Visiting the doctor more frequently does not necessarily add up to better health, and it actually can do the opposite. Dr. Peter Abadir, an associate professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, says frequent visits to health facilties where sick people congregate puts one at a higher risk of illness or infection. Visiting the doctor only when necessary is one way to avoid risky exposure.

Doctor visit frequency is not a one-size-fitsall answer. A yearly physical or checkup is a given, even for people who are healthy. People with a family history of certain conditions, like sleep disorders, cancer, high blood pressure, and other conditions, may need to see a doctor more frequently than those with no such histories. In addition, patients may need referrals to certain specialists who work together to provide an overall health plan. That can increase the number of appointments and shorten the intervals between them. Johnson Memorial Health offers

some statistics. • People visit the doctor four times a year on average. • Studies show that poor or uninsured people prolong the time between doctor’s visits. • Individuals with high blood pressure may need to see the doctor four times a year to ensure medications are working properly. • Patients on dialysis see the doctor several times a week. Dr. Jennifer Caudle, a family physician and assistant professor at Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine in Stratford, NJ, says too often people visit the doctor only when they are really sick. That works to their disadvantage because the appointment will focus only on treating the illness instead of addressing other preventative care and screenings. Balance is necessary in regard to health care. Patients can work together with their doctors to develop screening schedules that are customized to their particular profiles. These schedules can be modified as health history information changes or as patients age. Doctors can dial back or increase health visits as needed.

The good news is that there is a true breakthrough in treating peripheral neuropathy that may help you gain your life back again.

“I FEEL LIKE I’M WALKING ON PINS AND NEEDLES.”

CLINICAL STUDIES REVEAL: The debilitating pain, numbness and tingling experienced by patients suffering from peripheral neuropathy can be successfully treated – without the use of drugs and surgery.

“You’ll just have to live with” was the doctor’s diagnosis. That may be easy to say if you’re NOT the one that’s been diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy.

I ACTUALLY SLEEP AT NIGHT! My feet used to get very cold at night and have poor feeling. I saw the doctors and now my feet stay nice and warm, and I have pretty good feeling. I can sleep better at night, and I would recommend anyone with neuropathy to do the program.

Heritage Woods of Batavia Carole Rapp moved here from an independent senior facility in Batavia in November. Her daughter contacted Heritage Woods of Batavia because things were getting more difficult for her mom around her apartment. She had a caregiver visiting her weekly and felt she needed something more. However, with the pandemic going, on she felt she needed to move her to a facility with stricter precautions. She had visited Heritage Woods of Batavia before, and felt it would be the right fit for her mom. Carole ended up moving in on November 16th with a ribbon cutting in front of her apartment. (pictured) Upon moving in, new residents are put on quarantine for 14 days. To help with the transition of moving in during the pandemic, we offer a 14-day experience which includes each new resident receiving some of their favorite things for the first two weeks of quarantine. Carole received a gift bag of goodies which included some necessity items for everyday use, her favorite snacks, a potted mum, and her favorite drink, diet coke. Each day she was visited by someone on staff with a surprise to make her first days here unforgettable. Carole is looking forward to receiving an Echo Show as part of her experience, so she can make video calls with her daughter any time she wants. However, being on the first floor was a great

location for her daughter to visit with her from the outside safely. Window visitations can also be arranged for our residents at this time. Since moving here, Carole says “I love the food being delivered, and the staff is wonderful. Anytime I need help, there is someone available and I never have to worry about cooking or cleaning anymore”. Carole also enjoys our weekly newsletter that our activity department puts out each week. She said it keeps her mind busy and she looks forward to the puzzles and jokes. The newsletter also includes games, good news history, and positive sayings for all to enjoy in their rooms. Even though we have a pandemic going on, our residents can still enjoy activities and can stay active. Our activity department works hard with serving the residents with craft carts, holiday carts and games, the festive Friday cart, often skipping out of their rooms to dance with our cheerful Resident Service Coordinator. Carole also said she likes that we have doctors that come weekly if she has any medical issues. Our nurses are here Monday- Friday from 8-11 pm and on the weekends for our residents, along with 24- hour nursing assistants. This is something that was important to Carole’s family upon moving her in. We are here to assist with

meds and showers, if needed. Heritage Woods of Batavia currently has availability and is offering some incentives to move in. It is a supportive living community that accepts Medicaid. Please contact 630 406 9440 if you would like some more information.

6 tips for seniors to travel safely One of the perks of getting older is having more time to devote to recreation and traveling. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are roughly 52 million people who are age 65 or older in the United States. With a $1.6 trillion total net worth, seniors spend more on groceries, pharmaceutical items and travel and leisure than any other demographic. Age does not have to restrict one’s ability to travel, and with age comes experience and more opportunities to enjoy travel. Before taking off for parts unknown, men and women over 50 can take steps to ensure their excursions are as safe as they are memorable. 1. Consider risk. The coronavirus pandemic of 2020 taught the world that situations can change rapidly. Before booking any travel, weigh the risks and the benefits of a trip. Determine if COVID-19 is spreading where you live or at your destination. Older adults have a higher risk for severe illness caused by the virus. Until you are vaccinated, it may be best to wait to travel. 2. Use senior-friendly services. Seek out travel services that offer the best perks for older

adults. Many travel providers no longer offer senior discounts, but they may offer other benefits, such as early boarding or assistance with traveling from gates to baggage areas.

3. Get travel insurance. According to Liz

Dahl, cofounder of Boomer Travel Patrol, a website featuring expert advice geared toward the Baby Boomer demographic, travel insurance can be essential for older travelers. Older travelers may be more at risk of falling or getting sick and some may need extra medication if travel is interrupted or delayed. Travel insurance can provide extra coverage for a relatively low price if something goes wrong. 4. Don’t advertise your absence. It may be tempting to upload photos of your beachside vacation to social media as you are immersed in paradise. Unfortunately, seniors tend to be targets for thieves because they are seen as vulnerable. Don’t make the job easier by advertising you are away from home. In addition, have a neighbor period-

ically pick up your mail and set lights on timers to give the impression you are home even when you’re not. 5. Share your itinerary. Keep loved ones apprised of your general travel itinerary, especially if you are traveling solo, recommends AARP. Keep a mobile phone on you at all times. 6. Pack copies of important documents. In the event paperwork is lost while traveling, request copies of prescriptions and/or statements of medical conditions from each physician and medical treatment center so you have a second set. Keep copies of your passport, driver’s license, insurance cards, travel tickets, and other documents as well. Seniors have the ability to travel much more than other age groups. Make the experience enjoyable by focusing on safety.

Dorjath Law Center Nancie Dorjath loves working with her clients. She opened the Dorjath Law Center in order to create a new type of Estate Planning and Elder Law practice; one which is not only dedicated to personally connecting with seniors and their families, but also one that gives back to the community. We have a strong belief that by working together we can improve our community and make a big difference in the lives of others! Recently, the COVID-19 crisis has emphasized even more the importance for everyone to have planning documents in place. Estate planning documents should be thought of as a type of insurance. Should something unexpected happen to you, these documents make sure that you are protected and that your family members are prepared. “We have a saying”, Dorjath says, “if you can answer yes to these 2 questions then you need estate planning documents. The questions are: Are you 18 years of age or older? And are you breathing?” Dorjath tries to make the entire experience not only hassle free, but also provides valuable education to clients. She doesn’t believe in a cookie cutter approach. The Dorjath Law Center specializes in Elder Law, Medicaid Planning, Asset Protection Planning, Estate Planning, and Special Needs Planning. We work with all families to truly

understand their needs. Nancie is knowledgeable, understanding, compassionate and a true advocate for her clients. Many people say “I’m not old, so I don’t need to see an Elder Law attorney. But here is why that is false,” Dorjath replies, “Elder Law attorneys develop documents with an eye towards the future. We plan for expected and unexpected life events as we age.” This approach makes Elder Law attorneys a valuable resource for all individuals. “We take a holistic look at our client families,” Dorjath says. “We understand that their life story really matters. That gets to the heart of what makes us different. We get to know everything that we can about your situation and how you reached the point where you need legal assistance. We know this makes for better outcomes and allows for an integrated approach to solutions.” Dorjath knows that at other firms clients may get a few moments with the attorney and then often are moved off to work with other support staff. At the Dorjath Law Center she assures clients that they can always speak with her personally, getting advice and assistance directly from an attorney. She prides herself on providing the personal attention that she feels clients need and deserve. That’s not all. Unlike much of the competition, Dorjath will travel to see seniors if they are unable

to make it in to see her, and doesn’t charge extra for this personalized service. “My husband and I each grew up in a multi-generational home, with a grandparent living with us. That really taught me to respect and value the senior population and what they offer all of us. It’s my life work, and I am proud of it!”

Thank You for voting for us year after year!

Your Life Story Matters... Treating our clients and their families with dignity, compassion, and personal attention.

How to stay connected with loved ones after moving into an assisted living facility Decisions surrounding assisted living facilities are not always easy. Men and women may be reluctant to leave their homes while family members may be worried about how their aging loved ones will adjust to life in an assisted living facility. Though modern assisted living facilities cater to residents with an array of needs and interests, the hesitation about whether or not to move into such a facility is understandable. One of the concerns seniors and their families may have about assisted living facilities is how to remain in touch with loved ones. Thankfully, staying connected is easier than ever before. That ease of connection has been on full display throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, during which aging men and women have been urged to limit contact with people outside their households in an effort to reduce their risk of contracting the virus. When the pandemic is in the rearview mirror, seniors can continue to employ various strategies to stay connected with their families after moving into

an assisted living facility. • Embrace technology. It’s understandable that seniors are sometimes hesitant to utilize technology. Having spent much of their lives without smartphones and Zoom calls, it may seem like adjusting to a world where such things are now widely utilized will be incredibly difficult. However, modern technology is user-friendly, meaning seniors won’t need much, if any, technical expertise or experience to utilize an assortment of devices that can help them stay in touch. Ask a relative to show you the ropes of a new device or request that staff at the facility teach residents the basics of using devices to stay connected with family. Staff may help set up Zoom calls or help residents learn the ropes of texting. • Make a weekly communication commitment. Work with family members to set up a time each week when you can communicate directly with them. If family lives nearby, this might take the form of a weekly family meal at a loved one’s

home. If family lives too far away for routine in-person meals, set up a time each week for a family Zoom call. • Continue to engage with your interests and fellow hobbyists. If you were an avid reader who loved to discuss and recommend books to your loved ones, then continue to do so after moving into an assisted living facility. Sports fans who bonded with their loved ones over a shared passion for a favorite team can keep following their team and discussing the latest big game with their friends and family via email, texts or video calls. Various studies have discovered the positive effects that hobbies can have on long-term physical and mental health. Staying engaged with your passions can keep lines of communication open with friends and family and benefit your overall health. Keeping the lines of communication with loved ones open can help aging men and women as they transition to life in assisted living facilities.

Senior communities offering lifestyles

Living life to the fullest does not need to stop when adults near or reach retirement age. Age-restricted housing communities once bore the stereotype of having limited recreational options and dated surroundings. But modern senior homes and facilities are all about catering to active lifestyles — with some communities offering resort-like amenities and pristine properties. Furthermore, certain communities provide niche offerings for people who are looking for something even a little more different. Eligibility to live in these communities varies, but generally speaking one resident in the home must be age 55 or older. According to research by TRI Pointe Homes, of the 75 million people who comprise the Baby Boomer generation who are eligible for age-qualified communities, more than 32 million would consider living in such a community. The website 55places.com, which specializes in promoting age-restricted communities, indicates Florida has the most age-restricted communities in the country, followed by New Jersey. Arbutus Ridge Seaside Community for Active Adults was the first comprehensive retirement community built in Canada. Choosing an age-restricted community requires consideration of a host of factors, including the amenities residents most desire and the cost of a facility. The following factors can help

people decide which community is most suitable for them. • Style of home: Homes built in retirement communities are designed to be comfortable and convenient for aging residents. Many are single-floor units. Certain communities may be comprised of apartments, condos or townhouses, while others may be single, detached residences. • Amenities: When comparing age-restricted communities, consider the amenities available.

Total Protection for Future Costs and Burdens of Long-Term Care Available SPONSORED BY

Fewer and fewer people question the potential risk of long-term health care. COVID-19 has opened up the eyes of many people who either ignored the impact of aging or were in denial that it would ever happen to them. “It is hard to avoid the news about the virus crisis and the impact it has made, especially for those who are older or had pre-existing health problems,” said Matt McCann, a leading expert on long-term care planning. “We see the problems long-term care facilities and home care providers have had to address. We can’t avoid having compassion for the families who became caregivers. These are not new problems, but now a spotlight is being shined on the issue,” he continued. As we age, the need for long-term care increases. Family caregivers face both physical and emotional strain. Paid care services can wipe out savings. Some long-term care situations can go on for a very long time, which can have a devastating impact even on wealthy individuals. While most Long-Term Care Insurance has a cap on total benefits, a few do offer “unlimited” longterm care benefits. Most people do not need this

Do they include on-site dining, transportation, travel assistance, pools, fitness centers, walking trails, or outdoor sports facilities? Some communities have “aging in place” amenities, which means residents can move from independent living to assisted living to skilled nursing care as their needs change. Make a list of interests and then match them to a community that can fit your needs. • Costs: Costs vary considerably. Investopedia advises seniors to consider the community’s location and what is being offered, as these factors will affect costs. In addition to rent or mortgages, most communities also have monthly maintenance or homeowners association fees that need to be compared and considered. Read contracts carefully to see which other costs are included. • Specialized features: Unique men and women call for unique communities. If standard age-restricted communities do not fit the bill, 55places. com says there are specialized offerings for people who spend retirement in an RV; desire homes that align with their heritage; communities just for postal workers; or communities tied to a local college to continue lifelong learning. Age-restricted retirement communities are evolving and many specialize in catering to active lifestyles.

high level of protection, but for those who have substantial assets, a total asset protection plan makes sense. “These plans can also include a death benefit or return of premium rider. Either way, you get tax-free long-term care benefits, or your money gets returned after death. If you own a business, your policy can be tax-deductible as well. McCann recommends researching long-term care planning options with a specialist like himself. The advantages of RV travel Individuals who are approaching retirement or those who already have said goodbye to the working world may find they are ready to make some life changes. Travel is something many older adults enjoy when they have much more free time to see the sights. Recreational vehicles are great ways for people to get out and about. An RV is more than just a way to get around; for many people it becomes a lifestyle. According to the RV Industry Association, about 10 million American households own RVs. There have been more RVs on the road in recent years, and there are now more facilities to accommodate them. RVIA says there are now roughly 18,000 campgrounds around the country, and certain facilities are pushing to improve and upgrade campgrounds in national parks and on federal lands. Individuals considering if the RV lifestyle is for them can refer to this list of RVing benefits. • Inexpensive travel (or living): RVers may be attracted by the idea of low-cost travel that doesn’t involve hotels and airfare and greatly reduces their reliance on restaurants while traveling. RVs can be rented for roughly $100 to $500 per day, and RV parks usually run between $35 and $50 per night, according to Allianz Travel Insurance. To keep the costs down even more, certain truck stops, big box retailers, churches, hotels, movie theaters, casinos, rest stops and other roadside locations

will allow free overnight parking. Just verify before staying to avoid being ticketed. • Freedom to come and go: When traveling in an RV, there are no set check-in-/check-out times to follow or boarding times to meet. RV travel can be strictly on your schedule. • Plenty of help: Others who have embraced the RV lifestyle tend to be very friendly and ready to make new acquaintances at campgrounds and other stops. Those with more experience may be willing to share their expertise and pitch in to offer tips for better excursions. • Creature comforts: People who vacation or choose to live in their RVs tend to keep familiar items and essentials on hand. Those can include preferred linens, clothing, toiletries, books, games, and more. When taking such items along, there’s no need to pack and unpack much for any trip. • Follow the weather: If desired, RVers can pick up and follow the jet stream. If 70-degree days are your thing, then follow those temperatures coast-to-coast. If you like skiing or snowboarding, you can head to colder climates. • Downsize: The RVIA says that RVs are available across a wide range of price points. So if the idea is to trade in a stationary house for an RV, you may be able to do so for as little as $6,000 to as much as $500,000. The RV lifestyle may attract soonto-be retirees. There are various advantages to getting on board.

Ensuring a Successful Joint Replacement While pushing through every day aches and pains is common, chronic joint pain can impact every aspect of a person’s quality of life. If dealing with such everyday tasks as climbing stairs, sitting or walking causes pain, it might be time to consider joint replacement surgery for long-lasting relief.

How To Describe Pain To A Doctor

When suffering from chronic and persistent joint pain, it is essential to describe pain accurately when seeking treatment. Effectively communicate the location, sensation, and severity of pain. When a physician asks a patient to rate pain on a scale of 1 to 10, it’s important to give more details than just a number. For example, “feeling a sharp pain in the hip area while walking” may have a different cause than “a dull, persistent pain radiating in hip and lower back”.

Aftercare To Support A Speedy Recovery

The best thing a person can do following joint replacement surgery is to rest. While it can be tempting to return to a routine as soon as possible, it’s recommended that some time

should be taken off to give a person’s body a chance to rest without interruptions. Because a person’s body does most of its healing when asleep, getting more rest than usually will allow the body to recover quickly. Aim to get the recommended 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night and take short naps throughout the day. After having a total hip replacement, it’s important to use proper sleeping techniques to help avoid complications with the healing process such as a dislocation or leg blood clots. Follow these sleep tips to ensure a speedy recovery:

• • • • •

Avoid stomach-sleeping Avoid crossing legs or ankles Sleep on non-operative side Sleep with a pillow between knees Sleep on a firm mattress, if possible

After a joint replacement, muscle stiffness around the affected area may occur. Heating pads to reduce muscle tension may help to improve range of motion. It’s also common to experience inflammation surrounding the surgical site after

a procedure. Applying ice can help to reduce uncomfortable swelling.

Try to Move About

Following the procedure, it’s important to get up and move. This improves blood flow, which helps the surgical site to heal. While it is advised to take it easy and follow the aftercare instruction outlined by a physician, getting up and walking around once every hour can help recovery. Joint Replacement surgery can help give you long-lasting relief, so talk to your doctor to see if it’s right for you. Fox Valley Orthopedics (FVO) has seven locations throughout the Chicagoland northwest suburbs, and offers outpatient sports medicine, spine, total joint replacement, hand and wrist, foot and ankle, and pain management orthopedic care. All FVO surgeons are board-certified, fellowship-trained, and have received additional training in their specific area of expertise.
