ROWING ON THE RIVER Program brings traditional crew to the Fox River

A

s a student at Michigan State University, Libby Scarlatos was on the lookout for a new sport, when she made a fortunate discovery. Rowing, which she’d watched with intrigue while vacationing in Seattle, was about to be introduced as a women’s varsity sport. Scarlatos, a former high school swimmer, decided it was the perfect fit.

After competing in several NCAA rowing championships, and as a member of three national teams after college, Scarlatos now brings her love for rowing to Kane County, as the Director of Rowing and Adult Coach of RowAmerica, St. Charles.

Rowing is “great for people who love water sports or who enjoy distance events like swimming, running or biking,” Scarlatos says.

Though it’s not necessary to be in tip-top condition to begin the sport, “it will definitely get you shape,” she says.

Sometimes called “crew,” rowing involves single or multi-person boats and can be either recreational or competitive.

RowAmerica St. Charles opened in 2014, and launches on the Fox River from Ferson Creek Park, north of Boy Scout Island. The club offers lessons and competitive teams for both teens and adults. Rowers are grouped according to ability, with beginners rowing separately from more advanced athletes. But there’s no reason for intimidation. “Because our group is so new, just about everyone, with the exception of a couple of people, is a beginner,” she says.

The club currently has about 60 members, who enjoy getting together off the water as well. Last year’s summer season ended with a cookout, there also have been family outings to watch the Kane County Cougars, and go bowling.

“People come to us because they want exercise to be fun. Anyone can try it, you can go at your own pace,” she says.

If you are looking to embrace your competitive nature, RowAmerica offers teams in several groupings. Summer is the primary race season, when high school, college and adult (a.k.a.

Master) rowers compete against other clubs.

Most of RowAmerica St. Charles’ events are in the Chicago area, though there are regional meets and the national championship, held this year in Bethel, OH. Come fall, it’s time for head races. “These are long distance races against the clock and are 5,000 meters, or about three miles,” she says.

During the winter, rowers can continue to train on ergometers, or “erg” for short, at RowAmerica St. Charles’ indoor facility, located at 1150 5th Avenue. The erg simulates the rowing stroke, and helps rowers build endurance and strength as they prepare for the season ahead.

Spring brings high school rowing season, for RowAmerica’s teen members, who are coached

by Youth Coach Jelena Zelenovic, a collegiate rower from the University of Southern California and an NCAA medalist. A native of Serbia, she was a member of the Serbian national rowing team as a teen and competed at the World Junior Rowing Championship.

While rowing attracts people who are interested in a fun new way to exercise, the Fox River itself is a major draw as well. “This is such an amazing area and people just want to be out on the river, so this really captures their interest,” Scarlatos says.

Not only does the sport offer a unique way to get in shape, it also has a language of its own.

The shallow boats used in rowing are known as sculls, and can seat anywhere from one person to eight. In sweep oar rowing, rowers are paired and each rower mans a single oar. In sculling, rowers have two oars, one in each hand.

New members are welcome anytime, and classes are ongoing. Aside from high visibility yellow tops, which must be worn when rowers are on the water, no special equipment is needed. Boats and oars all are provided by RowAmerica.

Carly Schneider follows family footsteps linking love of golf with career

Carly Schneider has come a long way since growing up in the house behind the eighth green at the Rolling Knolls Golf Club in Elgin.

The Loyola graduate is currently thriving in the golf world, as an Assistant Golf Professional at the Elgin County Club. But it’s really no surprise, as golf is a part of the family legacy.

Originally designed and owned by her grandfather before being passed down to her father, the Rolling Knolls Golf was where Schneider first got a taste of the game. But it wasn’t always golf for Schneider.

“As a kid, I was really into a bunch of sports and was always dancing, playing volleyball and swimming – all that,” Schneider says.

Upon graduating in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in communication and sports management, Schneider was hired as an Assistant Golf Professional close to home, at the Elgin Country Club.

"My family didn’t force me to play, but it was always in the back of my mind.”

Despite having a family heavily engulfed in the golf world, they never once forced her to pick up a golf club, she says. “It was cool because my family didn’t force me to play, but it was always in the back of my mind.”

She began playing regularly at age 12. “I really fell in love with it on my own,” she says.

After teaching junior lessons and working on her own game throughout high school, Schneider ended up taking her talents to Loyola University to play Division 1 golf.

“Education was first for me, but golf was something I wanted to keep with me through the years.” she says.

“I wasn’t sure what level I was looking for, but the path really just found itself.”

“There are so many certifications for golfers, and it’s important to pick the right ones and learn different things,” she says.

She was accepted as a PGA Apprentice in 2014, and has also become a Level 1 Plane Truth instructor.

“Plane Truth is a community of coaches, instructors and players that view and analyze the swing a certain way,” Schneider explains. Plane Truth originally was envisioned by one of her biggest influences, Jim Hardy.

It’s been quite a transition from college to the professional world for Schneider, who still tries to hit the links and play a round or two a week.

“I really want to play in a mini-tour this winter, but it’s a huge financial thing and also finding the right coach,” she adds. “I haven’t really been working with anybody or been super focused on my own game since college.

Every development or change I’ve made on my swing is on my own.”

Kane County has 97 forest preserves and 206 miles of trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding, bird watching and exploring. There are also four lakes for fishing, canoeing and kayaking. You can launch a boat from many preserve locations such as Fabyan in Geneva, Jon J. Duerr in St. Charles or Oakhurst in Aurora. You can pick a spot and pack a picnic to enjoy the natural surroundings

been transformed by electronic gadgets. iPads have replaced I-Spy, and instead of crayons and a coloring book, our children are armed with Leap Frogs and head phones and DVD players to pass the endless hours of travel time.

If you’re of a certain age, you might consider yourself lucky to be alive to reminisce at all. In an era when parents packed us in the back of the station wagon laid out in sleeping bags, they’d hold out hope that the 4 a.m. departure time would find us sleeping for the majority of the trip. Looking back on it now we could have been airborne! I’m sure our parents now realize four bickering kids would be the lesser of two evils!

It seems in the last decade or so, the amount of children being diagnosed with ADHD, Asperger’s Disease, Sensory Processing Disorder, Autism, and other challenges has increased. Some of the ideas listed to the right may be beneficial both for travelling with little ones, and with children who have been diagnosed with some of the above mentioned challenges.

1. Prepare ahead of time.

Experience is a great teacher. I have done family trips with twins when I have made a list and when I have not. It goes without saying which trips were more enjoyable. Don’t forget to bring the comforts of home – the blanket, toy, pacifier or favorite book you always read at night. Many children get nervous staying at a new place with unfamiliar sights and sounds. These transition objects can go a long way to help.

3. Take it down a notch. Small children and kids with special needs thrive on consistency and routine.

What you may think of as a fun day may overwhelm your child. Plan a slower-paced day and be realistic about what you can cover with little ones in tow. Break for naps to prevent over-tired, crabby kids (and parents) later on.

4. Bring plenty of entertainment, particularly, if you are travelling a distance. Buying a few inexpensive toys can go a long way in saving everyone’s sanity. Favorite children’s music also can help. Headphones are great if they are old enough to use them.

2. Pack the medicine cabinet.

Not the whole cabinet, but unless you want to explore the local drug store during your vacation, make sure you bring your child’s prescription medication and double check to ensure you have enough for the whole trip. Bring a mini-First Aid Kit. Someone is bound to go exploring and bring home a new cut or bruise. Bring Benedryl in case of allergies. Is there such a thing as a

SAFE TAN?

U

ntil the 20th Century, having a tan held a negative connotation; it meant that you were a poor laborer forced to outdoors in the summer heat. Pale skin, by comparison, became a status symbol. But times have changed and now, a socalled “healthy glow” has grown into a common goal, despite the overwhelming research that shows too much sun can cause premature aging, sunburn and worst of all, skin cancer.

NO TAN IS HEALTHY “There’s never a safe tan,” says Sharon Horton, M.D., dermatologist at Advanced Dermatology and Mohs Surgery in Batavia. The sun causes ultraviolet (UV)- induced mutations, which damage the tumor-suppressive p53 gene.

According to Horton, this damage prevents our bodies from clearing pre-cancerous cells.

THE LOWDOWN ON SUNSCREEN Dr. Horton encourages her patients to wear a broad spectrum sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30. Sunscreens with a higher SPF offer more protection from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which is linked to the vast majority of skin cancers, as well as premature skin aging and eye damage.

• It’s important to note that even high-

number SPFs last the same amount of time as low-number SPFs. So Dr. Horton suggests re-applying sunscreen approximately every two hours, even on cloudy days and after swimming or sweating. “Wear it daily,” she says, referring to an Australian study that found that those who did so experienced less cancer incidences.

• Apply enough sunscreen. Most people only apply 25 to 50 percent of the recommended amount. “Apply enough to fill a shot glass,’” said Dr. Horton. This is the amount that dermatologists consider necessary to cover the exposed areas of the body.

BEYOND SUNSCREEN According to Dr. Horton, sunscreen alone cannot fully protect you. Therefore, she recommends that her patients:

• Wear protective clothing, such as longsleeved shirts, pants and a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.

• Stay out of the midday sun, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or at least 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

• Avoid tanning beds. They can cause skin cancer and wrinkling. In the last 20 years, skin cancer cases have soared and Dr. Horton attributes some of that increase to tanning beds, which are 20 percent stronger than the sun.

WHEN YOU OVERDO IT IN THE SUN According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), the best ways to ease the pain of sunburn include: • Put a cold, damp towel on your skin. Do this for 10 to 15 minutes a few times every day. That

FACE SUMMER with expert skincare tips

By YVONNE BENSON Summer rays can either illuminate flawless skin or it can damage it and smear makeup. To keep your makeup looking fresh through the summer heat, Bridget Lescher of Odalisque Beauty Apothecary in Geneva suggests using less moisturizer, and no heavy foundations.

“Keep your skin fresh and light before you do your make-up.

Just toner and eye cream so you don’t have too much oil on the face.” Lescher explains, “We love HD Powder which is actually ground sand that’s clear. You can matte down your makeup without looking as if you have heavy makeup on.”

On trend this summer are milky pastels, Lesher says. “Sheen to skin and have your colors be very soft with strong brows and lashes. Contouring is very big, but with eyes and lips it’s all about being soft and natural.” She added, “it can make the face appear slimmer and more lifted. It is easy to do with regular bronzer.”

The biggest element of skincare in the summer months typically is SPF protection. There are two basic types of SPF: chemical and physical.

“Chemical SPFs are listed on a product’s ingredient deck as oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octinoxate and homosalate,” says Tiffany Lewis, owner of Tiffany Lewis Skincare in St. Charles. “Naturally-derived, physical sun blocks contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which are finely ground minerals that reflect UV rays. These minerals provide stable, healthy protection to the skin.

“As an esthetician, I do not typically recommend SPFs that are solely chemical-based, as studies are beginning to show that the carbon compounds in chemical SPFs may be absorbing and holding damaging UV light in the epidermis. However, wearing a chemical-based SPF is far better than no SPF at all.”

Lewis says to complete your usual morning skincare regimen, then finish that off with a thorough layer of a facial SPF product.

Most people think of gardening as a chore – something up there with laundry, dusting, and washing the car. I admit, sometimes I think like that too. (Don’t get me wrong…I love working on OTHER people’s yards) The emerging summer has changed my perspective a bit. I have started to take my time and enjoy the moments in the garden. I have observed what is going on around me as I have watered and weeded. I have looked at each plant, figured out what was going right or wrong with it, and enjoyed it for what it is. I watched what plants the butterflies, bees, and birds visited, and noticed which ones became rabbit food. I also started to realize that some of my plants have a story.

Stories like that of my peonies: They came from my neighbor who told me that originally they came from the first owner of my house. The second owner of my home wanted to throw them all away so my neighbor rescued them. She gave me back a chunk that now do beautifully on the corner of the house. I’m passing a chunk onto a friend after they bloom.

I have a gorgeous Switch Grass that was destined for the garbage, but a co-worker of my husband’s brought them to his work in the back of a truck and told everyone to help themselves. The chunk we planted would have been worth over $50.

I have a beautiful, rare type of daylily that was hidden under a too-big shrub that now thrives in a new spot in full sun. I don’t think the previous owners even knew it was there! I even have plants that were mislabeled, presumed dead, or just plain weird – all thriving now.

I plant many plants in my garden just to see what they will do. How can I tell customers about them if I haven’t tried them myself? Some are amazing, some are duds, but at least I’ve had experience with them.

Penstemon, I have found a stunning color combination of gold and purple. I have Maidenhair Fern sticking out of the middle of a ‘June’ Hosta that accidentally got transplanted together, but the gracefulness of the fern contrasts nicely with the wild color of the hosta.

My ‘TigerEyes’ Sumac (my husband won’t let me cut it down) is a beast, but very striking with a large White Pine behind it to keep it in check. The garden should be a lesson in experimentation, in unexpectedness and in patience.

them all potted up and ready for me to plant (which is extra helpful because I tend to leave things out to die if I don’t have time). I have a chunk of his ‘Sum & Substance’ Hosta, that I had given to him more than 15 years ago. I also have some hostas from my mother-inlaw, which we tucked away next to our shed – out of the ground – to plant at a later date.

They spent three growing seasons upside down, on top of the soil and are beautiful!

S Professional landscaping tips for creating an outdoor space you’ll love

ummer days feel like they stretch on forever, but in reality, the season is a short one in the Chicago area. Homeowners can make the most of this fleeting time by creating the perfect outdoor space for soaking up the sun. Whether you’re dreaming of a sprawling garden or cozy patio, there are unique options out there for every vision.

More and more homeowners are opting to take their patios to a whole new level. Outdoor kitchens and fireplaces create a luxurious feel and allow homeowners to spend even more time in their outdoor space. According to a National Kitchen & Bath Association survey, 50 percent of designers worked on an outdoor kitchen in 2014, a 7 percent increase from the year before.

Wooden decks became popular a decade ago, but stone patios are making a big comeback, experts say. The wide variety of available options makes it easy for homeowners to customize their spaces.

“There are so many designs out there and so many companies making really nice products these days,” says David Muscato of Green With Envy Inc. in Batavia. “There’s a lot of styles and colors available at very different price ranges too, depending on the

stone of brick that they pick.”

Concrete is one of the most versatile and durable materials for patios. It can even be colored or inlaid with designs to suit the homeowner’s unique taste.

Muscato says the most popular patio material he uses is brick paver, an attractive but inexpensive option. An added benefit is that these individually laid stones tend to hold up better to the cyclical frost-and-defrost weather patterns of the Midwest.

Once you’ve created your perfect patio, you just need to add the finishing touches. Patio furniture can create the effect of a welcoming outdoor room and make your yard a great place to entertain or relax. There are plenty of options that are low on maintenance, but still big on style. Look for furniture made of rustproof frames with cushions that will resist moisture and mildew. Aluminum is both lightweight and durable, making it a great choice for outdoor use.

Lighting is another great way to enhance your outdoor space. The right lighting can make a patio more inviting or a walking path safer.

“Landscape lighting is very versatile these days and there’s so much different lighting available to people

Nothing says summer like a dip in the pool! that can do just about anything to improve their yard,” says Muscato. “It extends the yard into the summer so that you can use the yard in the evening hours and enjoy all the dramatic effects that the lighting creates.”

Of course, it wouldn’t be an outdoor space without plants. Lori Arrigo of Heaven on Earth Landscaping in Elburn says that long-blooming flowers, like salvias and knockout roses, will keep color in your garden all summer long. She also recommends incorporating a variety of plant types, even if it requires a little extra effort. “The perennials come back every year. They’re nice because you don’t have to keep replanting them, but they don’t give you the same flower power that annuals give you,” says Arrigo. “It’s always nice to mix the annuals in so you have that constant flowering.”

Even small yards can be transformed into an outdoor oasis. Arrigo suggests using containers to bring in plants without compromising space. This type of strategic landscaping can help make a small space look bigger and more inviting. “Even if you only have a small patch of grass, you can still create a perennial bed to give you some color in your yard,” says Muscato. “You can put in a small water feature. All these things will help you make your yard look bigger and more useable.”

A pool or spa can make your yard the hot place to be this summer. But there’s a lot to consider before taking the plunge. n What type of pool do I want?

Above-ground pools tend to be less expensive because they’re installed rather than built. Adding an in-ground pool is pricier and typically takes longer.

n Will a pool work in my yard?

Both the price and duration of the project will be impacted by your yard’s soil type, slope, and how accessible it is to construction equipment. Contact the experts.

n What can I afford?

In ground pools can cost in excess of $20,000. This price often creeps up when you begin to add extras like a surrounding patio, diving board, or water features. A variety of hot tub options are available these days, from inexpensive, inflatable models with built in filters starting at about $400, to expansive permanent designs that can rise in cost to more than $10,000.

n How will I keep my pool safe?

Specialty products like water alarms, fencing and pool covers can make your pool safer. Designers can help you determine which options work best for your pool and family.

n What are the ongoing costs?

The extra costs of having a pool can add up fast. Make sure to include chemicals, maintenance, utilities and equipment when planning your budget.

n Will this impact my insurance?

Contact your insurance agent before building a pool. Some companies raise premiums for homeowners with a pool. Insurance coverage for your pool is usually part of a homeowners policy.

It’s summertime and you want to improve your grilling game.

But can you bring the heat?

S

tart with the meat. Ground sirloin, makes a great burger, and the smaller slider burgers are popular, says Pat Falcone, co-owner of Josef’s Elegante Meats in Genenva. “Flip them a few times and they’re done. They’ll be nice and moist,” he says. “They’re small and you can eat them like popcorn.”

The most traditional grilled items include steaks, bratwurst, hot dogs, sausages and burgers, Falcone says. Kabobs with a marinade also are popular for grilling, as is boneless, skinless chicken. But Falcone cautions, the first rule in grilling is not to overcook. When in doubt, stay close and watch the meat, Falcone says.

“Don’t get a beer and come back 20 minutes later, because it’s all over.”

Fish has a quick cook time, which makes it a choice growing in popularity on neighborhood grills. And while barbecue sauce and seasonings don’t always work on fish, powders do, says John Cirpinski, an owner at The Spice House in Geneva.

Sriracha powder is a great addition to the grill, he says, adding that it’s best on shellfish.

“In powdered form, it’s not that hot. It’s a little sweeter sauce,” Cirpinski says. “Sriracha is not overpowering and the fish is not on the grill that long. Some need longer to caramelize, but fish takes high heat and faster grilling. It seals in the flavor of the fish.”

Granulated maple sugar on the grill caramelizes wonderfully, Cirpinski says, adding that it works best with chicken and salmon.

And for unusual flavors, think beyond meats, Cirpinski says. “Brisket barbecue seasoning is great on citrusy cranberries. Barbecue beans are also a good one. Barbecue pineapple, or add cinnamon sugar.” His choice? Milwaukee Iron Seasoning, a Southwestern blend of garlic, chipotle and smoked jalapeno chilie. “It’s good for corn on the grill. You mix it in the butter.”

Ed O’Connell, owner of The Olive Mill in Geneva, touts olive oil as the tasty, healthy fat that keeps grilled foods moist.

“Olive oils are best for grilling because it keeps things moist with flavored oils,” O’Connell says.

“Balsamic vinegars make a great barbecue.

The acids in the vinegar break down the fibers and makes the meat more tender. The balsamic caramelizes.”

Two of his big sellers are Blueberry Fresh Fruit Balsamic Vinegar, which is best for filet or chicken or beef, and Hickory Balsamic, for a smoke flavor.

For grilled vegetables, O’Connell advises cutting them up and placing them in a pouch of aluminum foil, then pouring in Extra Virgin olive oil, particularly one infused with herbs, “Or use a vegetable basket, there are holes in it so the extra olive oil runs out and just burns off. All you need is a coating.”

If you can’t take the heat, you can go milder, but no less flavorful with lemon and garlic. “It’s awesome on most kinds of fish, veggies and chicken,” Cirpinski says. “Lemon matures on the grill and gives it the flavor. Unlike most my childhood friends, I prefer salty to sweet, and ice cream was always a tough sell for me. Will it be thick and creamy, or will it simply melt on my spoon before I have even had a taste? Will the flavor be rich or artificial? As a self-proclaimed ice cream critic, I decided to search out the best ice cream offered along the rail line, for everyday commuters, and for local folks just looking to take a quick summer trip for a delightful frozen treat.

FIRST STOP – Kilwin’s in Geneva Located two blocks south of the train station, along Geneva’s bustling Third Street, sits a charming chocolate and ice cream shop. Upon entering, as you serpentine through their delectable towers of treats stocked full of candies and chocolates, decorated for the season. At your right, a modest section of parlor and barstool seating, all is positioned for a good view of their ‘show kitchen’ in the corner, where you can watch as staff prepare handmade treats on a daily basis.

Grahams is a small, but long corridor space, with standing room only, their display counter stretching the entire length of the place. Old fashioned chocolate posters, mirrors, and flora getting you in the mood for their seasonal favorites. Specialty candies lined the counter tops, fudge and chocolates displayed in prominence,

with the ice cream counter at the back.

As you approach, you are greeted with a menu of two dozen different ice creams, their specialty flavors advertised in bright colors, all of them modestly priced and abundant in flavor. The two person staff present that day were very courteous to their customers, making you feel at home and among friends. BIKER’S BEST GAL Judy Kaenel hits the road as a motorcycle safety advocate

By MELISSA RUBALCABA RISKE Judy Kaenel says she was just 13 the first time she hopped on the back of a motorcycle and enjoyed a ride, as a passenger.

“That started my love affair with motorcycles,” she says, remembering her first ride. “I instantly thought this is cool.”

Today riding is still a passion for the Elburn resident, but these days she seems to spend more time talking about motorcycle safety and vehicle safety than aboard her 1994 Custom Harley-Davidson 1200 cc Sportster.

Kaenel is the president of the DuKane chapter of A Brotherhood Aimed Toward Education, or as it is known, A.B.A.T.E. The national organization is an advocate for motorcyclists’ rights, with a focus on education as well as providing opportunities for organized riders for enjoyment as well as fundraising for the community.

Kaenel was a motorcycle passenger when she became involved with A.B.A.T.E., national organization focused on safety and the rights of motorcyclists. While motorcyclists may love the freedom of the road, the pastime comes often comes with discrimination and negative stereotypes.

“Motorcyclists are the most openly discriminated group,” Kaenel says, adding how business owners have shut the doors on riders and parents will cross a street to move away from a motorcyclist. Kaenel says the truth is most motorcyclists are family people, and among the most generous and kind people she knows, citing the hundreds of charity rides and charitable activities associated with motorcyclists, including the annual Toy and Food Run organized each year in Kane County. This is the 29th year of the event, scheduled for Oct. 11. The event is one of the largest in the areas and brings toy and food donations for 13 area charities.

“It brings together a group of pretty generous human beings and I can stand up and be proud,”

She also ispassionate about education and safety, for all drivers, as she speaks with groups and students throughout the area reminding drivers about laws, safety and making people more aware of motorcyclists.

“As a motorcyclist, we see more than the average driver would,” Kaenel says. “When I see motorists talking on their cell phone or texting, they are not only are they not obeying the law, they are putting us and danger and they are a danger to themselves.”

As she talks with each motorist she has one goal that they listen.

“If we can affect one driver, maybe that one driver won’t hurt someone or themselves,” she says.

She is a volunteer with A.B.A.T.E. and an active board member. For the last four years, she has served as president. She previously juggled her role along with her full-time work and her family, which includes a husband, Wally Elliot, and their five children and eight grandchildren. Last year she made the decision to leave work and put a greater concentration on A.B.A.T.E., increasing her speaking engagements and educational programs. The DuKane chapter of ABATE also is involved in working with local law enforcement, the states’ attorney’s office and provides support to families who have lost loved ones in motorcycle-related accidents.

“I have an excellent group of volunteers,” she says.

Among those volunteers are a group of young women stepping into more leadership roles, like Staci Chabowski of South Elgin. She was at a women’s ride organized by Kaenel when she heard her speak to the group.

“She inspired me to become a member of A.B.A.T.E. and I joined that same day,” Today Chabowski is helping to coordinate that same

event and has come to see Kaenel as great leader.

“The awareness she raises has helped me and several others become a better rider and mentor to others.”

Kaenel admits in the 1990s there weren’t many women in leadership positions with A.B.A.T.E. She has seen that change in the last two decades as more women are buying their own bikes.

“When I saw women motorcyclists becoming consumers and becoming involved I saw a huge turn with women taking positions of power and getting into it and riding for the love of riding,” Kaenel says. “I hope that I can be a catalyst to let them know that if I can do this, you can do this.”

Artist SHOWCASE CAROLINE STRAN Batavia Sculptor Dark and deep is the forest that Caroline Stran sculpts. In her work, stories run rampant depicting armies of bunnies and the downfall of the forest social structure as Little Red takes down the Big Bad Wolf and proudly displays his pelt as her cape. Caroline has a masterful approach to clay. She creates multi dimensional characters weaving layers of texture with complex surface treatments and mixed media.

Caroline is a distinguished artist inside and out of the classroom. As a junior, she captured the top spot at BHS Rock the Runway’s Disasters wearable art fashion show. This past fall, her hard work paid off at the Upstate 8 Conference Art Show when she earned 1st place in the Sculpture category as well as 2nd in Ceramics.

Her winning streak then continued at the Scholastic Art Awards when she took home both Gold and Silver Keys and finally she placed as an honorable mention at the Illinois High School Art Exhibition in March.

Over the past year, as a senior, Caroline has had a far-reaching impact on our art department and Batavia High School. She is a big dreamer that sets her standards high and through hard work and her industrious nature figures out ways to reach them. In the fall Caroline will study at the Kansas City Art Institute where she earned a scholarship worth $92,000 over the next four years.
