hroughout the region, decorations of red and green, boughs of holly and endless rounds of silver bells have signaled the arrival of what is – for many – the most wonderful time of the year: the holiday season.

While it might be great to be home for the holidays, a perfect cap on a great holiday season requires heading out on the town to send the old year out with a bang and ring in the new.

Surrounding the band’s live set, EvenFlow will offer drink packages, including an open bar offering an assortment of beers, wines and shelf liquors for $85 from 9 p.m. to midnight.

Across the Fox Valley region, a number of hotels, clubs, restaurants and others will offer an abundance of options for a fun frolic into 2017.

On New Year’s Eve, the Roundhouse will offer a package, much the same as they have done for the past five years, a representative says.

For $60 a person, plus tax and gratuity, guests will receive a buffet dinner, featuring dinner choices, desserts, late night snacks and a champagne toast at midnight. A cash bar will be offered throughout the night, along with dancing to music spun by a deejay.

On September 1, 2005, the vision became reality when LivingWell Cancer Resource Center opened its doors to its first participants. For more than 100 years, Christmas trees have heralded the beginning of a much beloved and highlycelebrated season. Families around the country treasure the tradition of selecting and, often, even cutting down their own Christmas tree.

Here is a list of farms to help you find the perfect Christmas tree for the holiday season.

Abbey Farms is a nonprofit organization run by and for the monks of Marmion Abbey in Aurora. Proceeds from the enterprise benefit the continuation of different ministries performed by the monks. Abbey Farms offers a variety of pine trees for cutting on more than 120 acres.

The holidays are a time for family. From visits with Santa to spectacular lights displays, there’s something festive for everyone. Make the season a little brighter with these kid-friendly holiday events:

¢ 7th annual Holiday Lights at Mooseheart Child City and School WHEN: 5 to 9 p.m. through Dec. 31 WHERE: Directly north of Mooseheart Road on Route 31, Mooseheart INFO: mooseheart.org Enjoy a night of holiday lights and activities at the Mooseheart campus. Visitors can drive through of one of the largest holiday light shows in the area, which spans 1.8 miles and features dozens of illuminated displays. Santa will pay a visit to the Mooseheart Field house from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 9-11 and Dec. 18-20. There also will be crafts, games, hot cocoa and cookies.

Admission is $10 per car.

But it’s known for its bar, which rotates 20 specialty drinks, and its martinis are routinely voted No. 1 in the area, Grabowski says. Every juice is hand-squeezed and ingredients, such as ginger syrup, are made onsite.

Real estate agent Diane Anderson connects with community through volunteer work

A

s a real estate agent, Diane Anderson has earned top honors for her work and praise for the volume of properties sold.

But the Tri-Cities are more than an area where she works. For Anderson, Batavia is the town where she and her husband have raised their children and volunteered – side-by-side – with neighbors at school functions and with local programs.

“We all work together and help each other out; that’s what I love about Batavia,” says Anderson.

Everyone works together, and we all support each other.”

Anderson moved to Batavia almost 30 years ago. Newly married, she and her husband, Mark, sought a place to settle and raise a family. Along with raising children, Anderson dedicated time to helping her husband with his construction business, Dimark, Inc. Along with handling the accounting, she gave input on interior design projects and helped with investment properties, too.

Several years ago, Anderson carved out a new career path as a real estate agent for Baird and Warner. She’s earned an award as a top agent and, in 2015, her property sales topped $10 million.

“I know Batavia so well,” Anderson says. “I love my job.”

Through the years, Anderson has found ways to connect with her community. When her children were young, she joined the Batavia Mothers’ Club Foundation and served as the organization’s president.

“It was a way for us moms to network and raise money,” Anderson says, adding that the group supported nonprofits and local programs.

When her children entered school, Anderson joined the Louise White Parent Teacher Organization, volunteering her time at the school and, again, spent time networking with other

parents. It was with the Louise White Parent Teacher Organization that she met fellow mom Joanne Spitz, and the two have remained friends more than 20 years.

From high school boosters to post-prom committee, Anderson has found various ways to volunteer. And her dedication goes well beyond the school community.

When a friend shared news of a family member coping with breast cancer, Anderson felt compelled to help. She and a friend, Michelle “Mike” Burke, started the Batavia Bunco for Breast Cancer fundraiser, which quickly became a popular event and has raised thousands of dollars. Much of the money raised was donated to research.

Earlier this year, Anderson also was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“I know I’m going to beat this,” Anderson says.

When Spitz started CHIP IN, a program to help families in need in Batavia, it was Anderson who was the first to gather donations, Spitz says.

“She is always so positive,” Spitz says. “She’s a great woman and a good friend.”

Anderson says that she tries to help where she can, but there’s more to her charitable endeavors.

As a child, Anderson remembers her family facing difficult times when food was limited and there was no money for presents during the holidays.

“When I was growing up, I didn’t have a lot,” Anderson says. “Being able to help others is like helping someone who was like me as a child.”

Whether she is organizing a community garage sale fundraiser or coordinating the annual Batavia Woman’s Club Fashion Show, Anderson dives into each project with a positive attitude and unstoppable energy.

Then, the Great Tree on the courthouse lawn will be lit, helping illuminate the final stages of Santa Claus’ journey from the North Pole. Once Christmas evokes numerous emotions for many, he and Mrs. Claus arrive, they will welcome and the Geneva Christmas Walk & Holiday House visitors to their gingerbread home. Christmas caroling, horse-drawn carriage rides, snacks and Tour hardly is immune to the nostalgia of the season. Rush used just five words to explain why. merriment will commence for the young and old.

I have seen long lines of people, smiling, waiting to go into homes.”

hose who enjoy gardening don’t often receive the tools of the trade during holiday giftexchanges. But there are all kinds of awesome gifts that the gardener in your life would love to get versus another scented candle or a fuzzy sweater.

Here’s a list of some of my favorite things that may help you with your gift selections: ¢ Felco No. 2 Pruners These are the gold standard in the industry.

Rather than being staunch on this year’s resolution, reach for a New Year’s realization.

I have found that it is nearly impossible to force myself to change. Think about all of the things you’ve tried to change about yourself, but – somehow – you remain the same. The problem with trying to create change through force is that if you don’t succeed, you’ll end up beating yourself up about it. Then you’ve not only missed the mark, but you’ve become your own worst enemy.

With self-acceptance comes the freedom to change.

I have never been a morning person, and I used to get so angry at myself for continuously sleeping in. I’d call myself lazy and unmotivated. But when I finally accepted that maybe I am just a person who runs on a later clock – all of a sudden – I started

trying to wake up just a little earlier each day.

Acceptance is not an excuse to continue bad behavior, it’s coming to grips with the reality of how things are right now.

Once I start walking away from denial, I begin moving toward change. And as my shortcomings are moved out of the way, the good in me can peek through.

We’ve all got great things inside of us. We are already loving, kind, tolerant and peaceful.

But there just happens to be some frustration, irritability, intolerance and chaos mixed into the bag, too. We’re only human.

You may not be able to change the world around you to fit your own ideals, but you do have control over how you react to things. By simply changing your reactions to people and circumstances, you can being to change your life.

So, the next time someone becomes a real pain in the neck, focus on how YOU respond to them rather than how to change them. It is amazing how differently people treat you when you start to treat them better.

Years ago, I was driving home from work, and I felt overwhelming gratitude for my job, my home, friends, family and all of the talents that I have. Six months earlier, I was at a job I hated; the world seemed to be closing in on me; I felt like no one was supportive; and I wasn’t good at anything. The funny thing about that experience was that the entire time I had the same job, same home, same family and friends. The only thing that had changed was me.

So, if giving up chocolate is your New Year’s resolution, and then – the next day – you end up buying out the entire candy aisle at Walgreens, don’t beat yourself up over it. But don’t ignore it, either. Instead, try to become aware of it, even humorously so. If you learn to laugh at your mistakes, then you can learn from them. Wisconsin town features centuries-old limestone buildings fit with coffeehouses, enticing shops, art galleries and cozy pubs and restaurants.

f you’re looking for a picturesque holiday trip, look no further than Cedarburg. The historic Wisconsin town, about 120 miles from the Kane County area, is the perfect place for a winter weekend getaway.

The area, named one of the country’s prettiest towns by Forbes magazine, boasts charming shops and boutiques, a beautifully preserved downtown and holiday events fit for the entire family.

“It just is a charming place to visit. And you couldn’t plan to visit Cedarburg at a better time than the holidays,” says Renira Pachuta of the Cedarburg Visitor Center. “It’s beautiful any time of year, but during Christmas it becomes almost magical.”

WHAT TO DO Cedarburg hosts plenty of festive events throughout the holiday season.

Here’s a look at what’s to come: • Holiday Film Festival Catch a classic Christmas movie at the Rivoli Theatre. The historic art deco cinema holds an annual Holiday Film Festival from Dec. 9-23.

• Holiday Art Fair Chat with artists and browse for unique gifts at the Holiday Art Fair put on by the Cedarburg Artists Guild.

Artists will showcase jewelry, fiber art, weaving, drawings and ceramics from Dec. 2-4 at the Community Center.

• Santa’s Dash Away 5K Participate in the 3rd annual Santa’s Dash Away 5K run/walk. The race will follow the Interurban Trail and takes place Dec. 10.

• Paradise Ranch Take a horse-drawn sleigh ride at Paradise Ranch. Afterwards, sip hot apple cider in the historic stone barn and see a replica of an 1800s log cabin.

Sleigh rides are available on weekends; Santa will visit through Dec. 22.

• Stumpf’s Tree Farm Cut down your own Christmas tree at Stumpf’s Tree Farm. Choose from majestic pines and spruces, along with decorative wreaths boughs through Dec. 23.

Visitors should also set aside time to explore the area’s rich history.

Cedarburg has two neighborhoods listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which include more than 200 historically significant buildings.

The downtown area is a good place to start your historic tour. Admire the architecture along Washington Avenue, which is lined with centuriesold limestone and brick buildings.

Many are still open to the public as shops and museums. Stop in the General Store Museum to view the Midwest’s largest collection of antique advertising and packaging.

• Santa’s Workshop Visit Santa’s Workshop, a magical gingerbread house on Washington Avenue. Kids can meet Santa and Mrs. Claus on various days through Dec. 20.

“The merchants really go all out for the holidays,” says Pachuta. “There’s thousands of twinkling lights; their windows are always beautiful; and the streets are lined with luminaries.”

Visitors can get in the holiday spirit at Cedar Creek Settlement. The Settlement features 25 stores, including gift and specialty shops, galleries, artists’ studios and antique shops.

There are also three restaurants, and the Cedar Creek winery is nestled in a restored 1864 woolen mill. The area will be festively decorated for the season with wreaths, garlands and thousands of lights.

Fridays are the perfect time to visit the Settlement. Festive Friday Eves, which run each Friday through Dec. 16, offer a variety of family-

friendly free events. The night’s festivities begin at 5 p.m. and end around 9 p.m. Each week will feature music, food and carriage rides, as well as unique themes, which are as follows: • Dec. 2: “The Settlement Christmas Showcase” with a display of artisan goods, live music with Joey LaVie and wine and cheese at the winery.

• Dec. 9: “Santa’s Workshop” will feature a visit from Santa Claus in his winter wonderland.

There also will be live music by David HB Drake, free ornament and cookie decorating for kids, and complimentary wine tastings, cider and cookies.

• Dec. 16: “A Taste of Christmas” is a night for adults to shop and socialize in a festive atmosphere. Evergreen Pub & Grill, A’Salute, EvenFlow top spots to croon to your favorite tunes

By CHRIS WALKER The Evergreen Pub & Grill in St. Charles has reason to sing “We are the Champions” by British rock band Queen, after being named the “Best of the Fox” honoree for karaoke in this year’s contest.

“It’s great that so many people think that we’re such a great place to come in and sing karaoke,” says Brian Zirlin, managing partner of the Evergreen. “We were really pleased with the news.”

The Evergreen, which hosts karaoke fun on Friday nights, has been around for a long time, but it’s also relatively new in the sense that Zirlin took over the restaurant in January. He renovated the space, revamped the menu and expanded its entertainment options.

“The karaoke is great, and Mustang Matt and his company do a wonderful job,” Zirlin says. “And people love coming out for that and for other things. We’ve got a lot of TVs for sports, some live music now on Saturdays and a Wisconsin supper club kind of menu.”

Rather than focus on one thing to attract customers, the Evergreen welcomes those looking to enjoy a good meal, watch sports, listen to live music or show off their talent in – or not-so-talented – karaoke singing.

“We’re far more than a shot and a beer tavern, and quite an array of a demographic is coming in,” he says.

and musicians and to give people a lot of ways to be entertained – and karaoke is one of them.”

While the Evergreen won “Best of the Fox,” readers also recognized A’Salute in St. Charles and EvenFlow Music & Spirits in Geneva as “One of the Best” options for karaoke.

There’s a “Cheers”-like vibe at A’Salute, which makes perfect sense since “salute” means “cheers” in Italian. The bar hosts weekly karaoke Thursdays from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.

“Some places stick to a script of about 100 songs, but here you can sing any song you can find on the Internet,” says A’Salute bartender, Tori Hart. “Usually we’ll have a mix of country, rock ‘n’ roll and slow jams every night.”

The mix of patrons on most Thursday nights is an eclectic one, with 20-somethings taking the stage as well as the owner and even one regular who is in his 80s.

“Our owner Gus Donzelli usually sings one or two Sinatra songs every night,” Hart says. “It’s a really good accepting crowd and that we were voted ‘One of the Best’ karaoke [bars]in Kane County is very cool, especially for a smaller place like us.”

The A’Salute staff builds relationships with its customers.

at Hickory Knolls Discovery Center with CAROL HAGGAS

I

t’s not often that you get to meet a snake named Kevin, a tarantula named Miss T or a salamander named Sally.

But – along with other animals with names like Timmy C., Sweetie Corn, Miss Piggy, Olaf, Randy, Billy, Axel, Oscar, Frankie, Mary, and, of course, the Center’s beloved mascot, Peter Rabbit – these critters, and many others, form the hopping, crawling, slithering, swimming and jumping soul of Hickory Knolls Discovery Center in St. Charles.

Seeing, touching and even holding unusual animals, reptiles, insects and amphibians is an essential part of the Hickory Knolls experience.

Whether they’re housed in glass aquariums or swim in custom-built ponds, the animals reside at the discovery center in order to introduce both children and adults, alike, to the diversity of animal life that exists in our own backyards.

The Center’s non-human population has included corn snakes, bull snakes, a Western Fox Snake, an Eastern Milk Snake, a Black Rat Snake and an Albino King Snake. There’s a soft-shell turtle and a pond full of Blanding’s turtles – the endangered species that are part of a recovery project in cooperation with the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County. And, of course, the cute and cuddly Peter Rabbit and a guinea pig named Miss Piggy live at the center, too.

Not all the Center’s animals have names, but by naming some of its more popular and accessible animals, the Center is helping break down barriers that can exist when people are unfamiliar with or uncertain about a certain animal.

Though Hickory Knolls is not a repository for abandoned or discovered animals, it does have an extensive list of individuals and rescue groups that will take animals in and re-home them.

“If you have a tough situation where you can’t keep a pet, such as a rabbit or snake or turtle, any longer, letting what you perceive as a wild animal back into the wild isn’t an option,” says Otto.

Once an animal has been in captivity, even for a short time, it acquires health insufficiencies and loses the survival skills necessary to live outdoors.

“There are people who have true phobias, and a cute name isn’t going to help them overcome that, but if they find out that snake is named Timmy or Kevin, they may not be as afraid,” says Otto.

“These animals provide a chance for visitors to see critters from other environments,” says Pam Otto, manager of nature programs and interpretive services. “People can learn the connection between what we have here and what exists in our community’s natural areas.”

In fact, many nature centers and zoos discourage naming display animals because they want to emphasize the distinction between a domestic pet and an animal that lives in the wild.

The discovery center also provides a great way for families to determine whether that guinea pig or turtle they’re thinking of adopting will be a good fit for the family. Interpretive signs tell important facts about every animal (Did you know turtles can live for decades?), and staff can relay insider tips about an animal’s habits and temperament.

“If it’s a pet, it should stay a pet, and if it’s in the wild, it should stay in the wild,” says Otto. “I can’t stress that message enough.”

On Nov. 5, the Batavia Woman’s Club hosted a fashion show and luncheon to benefit the Elderday Center, an adult day center that specializes in memory care and aims to enhance quality of life, cognition, socialization and overall wellness for adults and seniors. The fashion show took place at the Q Center in St. Charles and featured clothing from three Geneva boutiques: Evernia, Flair on 3rd and C. Rinella Designs.

About $17,000 was raised, and an estimated 300 people attended the event.

Layer upon layer of textures were placed on top of the original photo and blended together to complete the image.

“It is my intention to transport viewers through beautiful urban forest pathways to share my own personal seasonal kingdoms,” says the award-winning artist. “Not only will viewers see the trees but, emotionally, ‘feel’ them.”

The Saint Charles Arts Council is “very pleased to have had [Frost’s] work in a number of their events, including Art at Home, Pop Up Galleries and ‘Art Around the Corner’ public art displays,” according to the SCAC website and Facebook page.

If you’re passionate about pets, Anderson Animal Shelter – which has been saving animals’ lives and serving the Fox Valley for the past 50 years – offers simple ideas for helping adoptable animals during the holidays and throughout the year.

“Any donations directly and greatly help Anderson continue its mission of improving the lives of pets and people through service, education and advocacy,” said Beth Drake, executive director of Anderson Animal Shelter. “About 3,000 animals will be adopted from Anderson in 2016, and we want to save even more in the coming years, while providing the best care and environment for these pets while they wait to find loving homes.

• Giving drives. Individuals, families, schools, youth groups or companies can organize a giving drive or holiday giving tree to collect wish list items for the shelter. Supplies are used to keep the animals well-fed, comfortable and entertained. In fact, every month, Anderson uses 4,500 pounds of dry food, 1,020 pounds of canned food and 4,000 pounds of kitty litter. Any donations can be dropped off at the shelter in South Elgin during regular business hours.

• Kennel and Condo Sponsorship Program. Individuals or organizations can sponsor one or multiple cat condos or dog kennels in the shelter’s adoption rooms. In return, a personalized plaque will be displayed on the animal’s condo or kennel in memory or recognition of whomever is chosen. This is a visible and tangible way to support the daily care of animals, and the shelter will provide periodic updates on the adoptable animals waiting for forever homes in anyone’s sponsored area.

• Annual membership. For as little as $25 a year, residents can become an Anderson Animal Shelter Member. This support contributes to the ongoing care of adoptable animals.

Contributors receive the regular shelter newsletter to learn more about the adoptions, programs and services made possible through memberships. The annual senior membership is $25; individual membership is $50; and family membership is $100.

No matter how you choose to give, a charitable donation will make a meaningful difference in a homeless pet’s life – and that’s a reward that lasts throughout the year!
