“THE BIZ ON FIZZ” This is a phrase coined by the Illinois State Dental Society, and used in a pamphlet they produced. It’s really a straight talking overview of how soda affects our teeth. Most people drink soda, aka pop, a beverage with no nutritional value.

In fact, the typical American drinks 53 gallons of soda each year. Why do we drink this stuff, and how is it affecting our teeth?

Many folks drink sparkling sodas for the caffeine “buzz”, and many drink for the taste of it. If you drink regular soda, not diet, this sugar filled drink feeds the bacteria in your mouth.

The bacteria multiply and release acid, which gradually eats away the enamel on your teeth.

Eventually, the acid eats through the outside shell of enamel, and into the softer dentin portion of the tooth producing a “cavity”. The higher the

sugar content of the beverage you are drinking, and the greater the number of times your enamel is exposed to it, the greater your risk for developing tooth decay. In other words, if you want a soda you are better off choosing one with a lower sugar content, and drinking it quickly, than taking a sip every few minutes over a period of several hours.

If you think your teeth will be protected by drinking diet soda, think again. Diet pop is very acidic. While it doesn’t feed bacteria, you are still exposing your teeth to repeated attacks of acid. Other drinks high in acid content such as fruit drinks, juice boxes, and some bottled teas are also capable of repeated acid attacks. Even some waters sold as “Vitamin Water”, actually Beverage

have high sugar content or contain phosphoric or citric acid.

It’s a good idea to start looking at the nutrition charts found on the side of the beverage can or bottle.

You will often see sugar listed as sucrose, or high fructose corn syrup. Look at the total grams of sugar, and try to choose the beverage with the lowest number. Now look at the ingredients, and check for phosphoric acid, or citric acid. Both are responsible for lowering the pH of the beverage, thus making it more acidic. It’s impossible to know exactly how “acidic” a beverage is, so just try to avoid drinking beverages which contain either of these chemicals. The following chart may make your choices easier.

Healthy Suggestions Try to choose a beverage with a low or no sugar content, with a higher pH if possible. Water, milk, or 100% juice are healthy options. If you do choose to drink a beverage with high sugar content or low pH, don’t sip it over a long period of time. Drink it quickly, then brush and floss

afterwards. If you don’t have time for brushing and flossing, then rinse with warm water.

As a consumer, so many beverage choices are available today. Try to be an informed consumer, and make “dental friendly” choices whenever possible. Preventive dental

care which includes daily brushing, flossing, and twicea-year professional cleanings dramatically reduces tooth decay and gum disease. This, coupled with healthy beverage choices, can give you a vibrant, “sparkling” smile for your lifetime.

MAKING THE SMALLEST VOICE HEARD Gloria Bunce leads a team of volunteers, advocating for children in the courtroom

B

ill Gates, founder of the Microsoft Corporation, once said, “If you show people the problems and you show them the solutions, they will be moved to act.”

That certainly has been the case for Aurora resident Gloria Bunce. Following years of experience working with non-profits, she longed to be able to help children. When she learned about the executive director position at the CASA Kane County in 2007 she remembered thinking the opportunity was “divine intervention.”

“This is truly a job that inspires me from the moment I wake up,” Bunce says.

CASA, or Court Appointed Special Advocates for children, is a nonprofit organization that provides volunteers who seek the best interest of children within the juvenile court system.

Many of these children enter the system due to the abuse and neglect of their parents and legal guardians. More than 250 volunteers, each are assigned, by a judge, to a given case, and remain active throughout the duration of a case, which can be two to three years. CASA volunteers will interview the children, family members, teachers and many others that will provide detailed written reports to the judge overseeing the case.

A large part of her role is fundraising to support staff of 14, and the CASA Kane County and Guardian Ad Litem volunteers. The organization relies completely on private donations and receives no state or federal funding.

“I make sure my team has the resources and tools it needs to provide the valuable time and experience to our CASA/GAL volunteers,” Bunce says, “as they provide the basic things these children need to thrive.”

“We used to fundraise on a year-to-year basis,” Schmalz says. “She has the word out about CASA and now we are regarded as an exceptionally viable and good organization.”

Bunce says the endowment, started in 2010, has about $1.5 million and the goal is to reach $5 million. Additionally, there are goals to fund a special youth initiative, which will provide oneon-one support for education, health care and other directed life skills and training of children and young adults who have been appointed to the CASA Kane County organization. Each year the organization supports nearly 600 children in the abuse, neglect and probate courts.

Earlier this year the West Suburban Philanthropic Network named Bunce the nonprofit executive director of the year. Bunce says while she is honored, she credits those around her – from her staff and volunteers to board members and advisors, and the legal and social services she works with daily –for their dedication to the children from throughout the county who are served through CASA. “I have the 30,000 foot view, making sure everything is in place,” Bunce says.

Mari Pierce, a CASA Kane County Board Member of seven years and owner of the Alphagraphics in St. Charles calls Bunce a “faboulous director,” adding she has a wonderful way of helping people to understand the mission of CASA and to support the work of the volunteers.

“Gloria made our organization so much more visible,” Pierce says. “She elevated the organization to one of the best in the nation.”

ow did it happen that it finally got warm and sunny, and we already are going back to school? The summer break seemed to fly past me this year, pausing only long enough to serve as a reminder to buy supplies and get school physicals scheduled.

But there still are a few weeks remaining of summer break before the school buses hit the streets, so we tell you all about some great events and happenings, as well. Like a phenomenal Women's Power Lunch, featuring strong women from businesses and nonprofts in an interactive panel discussion.

Most students in the Chicago area return to the classroom this month, and with that return comes all that school life has to offer.

The youngsters are filled with excitement and trepidation, the teens carry an air of coolness as they stroll the hallways, and the teachers respond with a mix of excitability and frenzy, as they push through to get all the classrooms ready and the lessons prepared.

There's still so much to see and do this summer, and this month, in our communities.

We hope you'll join us as we wrap the season up in style, and in print!

Vicki Morcos devotes her skills to securing dollars for education

he has what is arguably the best job in the world – equal parts fairy godmother and matchmaker. As the partnership officer for Dunham Fund, Morcos helps to make dreams come true for local educational initiatives, while also working to connect them with other corporations and foundations for further funding support.

“It is the best job in the world, working for the Dunham Fund which does so many great things for the community,” she said.

Named for philanthropist John C. Dunham, the Dunham Fund works to “support organizations that work to make the world a safer and more comfortable place for mankind to live and prosper.” In awarding grants, the Dunham Fund’s focus is on organizations in the Aurora area, and those supporting educational initiatives.

Morcos accepted the position of partnership officer when it was created about a year ago. Prior to coming on board, she worked in commercial interior design for 20 years.

“I owned a company in Aurora for many years and had skills including networking, nurturing relationships and selling concepts. These are the same skills that I use as the partnership officer with the Dunham Fund, talking with other funders about why they’d want to support non-profits in our service area,” she said. Morcos has served on several boards of directors and fundraising committees over the years.

in,” she says. “The community has been very generous to my family and me. As a local business owner I’ve always felt it’s important to give back.”

Morcos said that the partnership officer position reflects an emerging trend in the world of philanthropy.

“It’s a way to bring more dollars to service areas that really need it in the community,” she said.

“We try to leverage the dollars brought into the community. There are needs that far exceed the $3-4 million that we grant each year so we try to introduce other corporations and foundations to non-profits and projects in our area with the hope that they’ll support them further.”

As Partnership Officer, Morcos said that she meets with representatives from other foundations and funders to learn about their missions and how they decide whom to fund. “I also meet with corporations that have a funding arm,” she said. She will try to get a feel for what

the foundations or corporations are presently or interested in funding.

“For instance, a tech company may be interested in supporting science, technology and math initiatives,” she said. Morcos can then try to introduce them to similarly aligned schools and non-profits.

Additionally, Morcos said she helps to facilitate challenge grants issued by the Dunham Fund whereby they’ll match dollar for dollar, other grants that are made. “For instance we’ll help a non-profit raise $250,000 and we’ll match $250,000 for a total of $500,000. The amounts vary depending on grant requests and what the board is comfortable granting to each specific non-profit,” she said.

Morcos said that she is grateful for the job that she loves, helping to continue the legacy of John Dunham through supporting organizations in the community.

John C. Dunham STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Partnership School at Aurora University. This innovative educational program promotes math and science education to middle school students from Aurora-area school districts, while also providing teacher development opportunities. The project, which is being spearheaded by the Institute for Collaboration of Aurora University, includes an Aurora Mathematics and Science Education Committee comprised of government, business, school and social service organizations. The Dunham Fund is granting $2.35 million over a four-year period to help build the $12 million school.

SPARK The Dunham Fund is providing a $100,000 one-year challenge grant to support the continuation and expansion of SPARK (Strong, Prepared and Ready for Kindergarten). This is an early learning initiative developed to increase access to quality early learning services for all children in the Aurora area. The challenge component of the grant helps to build parent investment and engagement in the program. SPARK is a collaboration of the United Way of the Aurora Area, City of Aurora, local school districts, YWCA Child Care Resource and Referral, local childcare providers and other organizations.

Bonbons!

I

t recently occurred to my husband that with our son starting kindergarten, we’d save some money on preschool.

I reminded him that the money we are saving is actually going toward my bonbon fund.

This fall marks the end of an era for this mama when my second child starts going to school all day. It truly is a bittersweet time for me. When I quit my job six years ago to stay home with my daughter, knowing that we would soon be adding another member of the family, I thought for sure I would end up going back to work once both kids were in school.

I spent a good amount of time trying to think of what I would do in my “next life” after being a stay-at-home mom. The further I got into my role, the further I pushed those thoughts to the back of my mind. Now, I am acutely aware that time has come. Or has it?

The whole time I’ve been home, I’ve kept myself busy with volunteer work, teaching group fitness classes and writing. Many of those things I did while finding ways to shuffle, schlep and bring my kids along with me. Once they started school part-time, I tried to fit as much in while they were in school, but I spent most of my time traveling between preschool and bus stops. I’m going from two and a half hours, three days a week of free time to six and a half hours every day.

While that affords me flexibility to work, I’m

left with a feeling of apprehension.

I still want to be home when they get off the bus and be able to take them to their activities. I still want to be able to volunteer in their classes. I still want to be able to teach group fitness classes and volunteer on various committees.

Going back to work would eliminate many of those things from the equation. But are those things enough? Can I have my bonbons and eat them too?

I’m not sure where my self-imposed deadline of going back to work comes from, but I guess all I need to do is look at the fact that I just referred to it as “self-imposed” and there’s my answer. My identity has been as a stay-at-home mom for the last six years and I got used to the idea that my “job” was caring for my children. But now that the kids will be

Can I have my bonbons and eat them too? at school all day, I fear that people will think I’m just sitting around eating bonbons, taking long naps, getting mani-pedis and going to the mall. Worst of all, I’m worried I might get bored.

I don’t know why I doubt myself so much

since I never have been the type of person to just sit around and do nothing. Why would I start now? So, here’s what I’m going to do.

Cut myself some slack. Enjoy not having to entertain the kids all day. I’m going to grocery shop — alone — and save a ton of money by not having to bribe the kids with treats or toys just to get through the shopping trip.

Perhaps I will use the money I save to buy more bonbons!

I’m going to try to teach more group fitness classes during the day since my window of opportunity will open up and I won’t be bound by preschool pickup and drop-off. After all, I need to burn off all those bonbons.

I’m going to go to my committee meetings and not have to lug a bag of tricks with me to occupy the kids for an hour. I’m going to write more.

So, when I wave goodbye to the kids this month as the bus pulls away, I’m surely going to be emotional. I’m going to miss my little partner in crime. But then I’m going to march inside the house and enjoy a few bonbons for the symbolism’s sake. I’m going to let go of my own self-imposed guilt knowing that at some point something will come along that

will be a good fit for me to jump back in the workforce. Until then I’m going to keep doing what I’ve been doing and wait with anticipation for the bus to pull up each day — well, most days anyway.

Tips for a great BACK-TO-SCHOOL TRANSITION Provided by Ted Feinberg, EdD, NCSP, & Katherine C. Cowan National Association of School Psychologists

Getting a new school year off to a good start can influence children’s attitude, confidence, and performance both socially and academically. The transition from August to September can be difficult for both children and parents. Even children who are eager to return to class must adjust to the greater levels of activity, structure, and, for some, pressures associated with school life.

The degree of adjustment depends on the child, but parents can help their children (and the rest of the family) manage the increased pace of life by planning ahead, being realistic, and maintaining a positive attitude.

Here are a few suggestions to help ease the transition and promote a successful school experience, before the first day even arrives:

GOOD PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH. Be sure your child is in good physical and mental health. Schedule doctor and dental checkups early. Discuss any concerns you have over your child’s emotional or psychological development with your pediatrician. Your doctor can help determine if your concerns are normal, ageappropriate issues or require further assessment.

REVIEW ALL OF THE INFORMATION. Review the material sent by the school as soon as it arrives. These packets include important information about your child’s teacher, room number, school supply requirements, sign ups for after-school sports and activities, school calendar dates, bus transportation, health and emergency forms, and volunteer opportunities.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR. Make a note of important dates, especially backto-school nights. This is especially important if you have children in more than one school and need to juggle obligations MAKE COPIES. Make copies of all your child’s health and emergency information for reference. Health forms are typically good for more than a year and can be used again for camps, extracurricular activities, and the following school year.

BUY SCHOOL SUPPLIES EARLY. Try to get the supplies as early as possible and fill the backpacks a week or two before school starts. Older children can help do this, but make sure they use a checklist that you can review.

RE-ESTABLISH THE BEDTIME AND MEALTIME ROUTINES. Plan to re-establish the bedtime and mealtime routines (especially breakfast) at least one week before school starts. Prepare your child for this change by talking with your child about the benefits of school routines in terms of not becoming over tired or overwhelmed by school work and activities.

TURN OFF THE TV. Encourage your child to play quiet games, do puzzles, flash cards, color, or read as early morning activities instead of watching television.

This will help ease your child into the learning process and school routine. If possible, maintain this practice throughout the school year.

VISIT SCHOOL WITH YOUR CHILD. If your child is young or in a new school, visit the school with your child. Meeting the teacher, locating their classroom, locker, lunchroom, etc., will help ease pre-school anxieties and also allow your child to ask questions about the new environment. Call ahead to make sure the teachers will be available to introduce themselves to your child.

MINIMIZE CLOTHES SHOPPING WOES. Buy only the essentials. Summer clothes are usually fine during the early fall, but be sure to have at least one pair of sturdy shoes.

Check with your school to confirm dress code guidelines.

DESIGNATE AND CLEAR A PLACE TO DO HOMEWORK. Older children should have the option of studying in their room or a quiet area of the house.

Younger children usually need an area set aside in the family room or kitchen to facilitate adult monitoring, supervision, and encouragement.

SELECT A SPOT TO KEEP BACKPACKS AND LUNCH BOXES. Designate a spot for your children to place their school belongings as well as a place to put important notices and information sent home for you to see. Explain that emptying their backpack each evening is part of their responsibility, even for young children.

FREEZE A FEW EASY DINNERS. It will be much easier on you if you have dinner prepared so that meal preparation will not add to household tensions during the first week of school.

A sports physical and a yearly physical are the same thing, right?

ack-to-school physical exams are more complicated than you might think. They build on the foundation of your child’s physical and mental health, which is rooted in a strong relationship with your pediatrician.

Summertime is a great time to schedule your child’s annual physical examination and/ or sports physical. We recommend annual physical examinations even if your child has not been sick. During the annual physical your pediatrician will examine all body systems, assess your child’s growth and development, review his or her vaccine history and provide any missing vaccines. Many physicals include vision and hearing screening, and checks for anemia and abnormal cholesterol (dyslipidemia). Your child also is counseled on topics such as nutrition, obesity if present (appropriate diet, and proper exercise), oral/ dental health, safety (proper use of car restraints, helmets, sun/insect protection), school readiness, establishing routines, friendships, and dealing with bullying.

Additionally, middle and high school aged children are screened for risky behaviors, such as tobacco, drug and alcohol use, distracted driving and sexually-related behaviors. The importance of head injury prevention and concussion management also is discussed.

Any chronic illnesses are reviewed, medications renewed, and specific action plans are formulated.

Like building a solid house, the foundation of your child’s physical and mental health is rooted in the continuity of care that your pediatrician can provide. These school physicals build on that foundation. This is something not attained at a walk-in facility that touts a bargain-priced school physical.

The State of Illinois requires completed school physical and immunization forms prior to entry into pre-school, kindergarten, 6th grade and 9th grade. Most colleges also require a completed physical as well.

The main goal of a pre-participation physical evaluation, or “sports physical” is to determine if your child has any medical reasons to limit full athletic participation, focusing on the cardiac and musculoskeletal systems. Schools require yearly sports physicals if your child is participating in any school sports. Anderson Animal Shelter’s Annual Jewelry Faire has a tradition of bringing together women with a soft spot in their hearts for animals and a love of jewelry. No one knows this better than volunteers Kathleen Graff and Cindy Weinberg, who founded the Faire over eight years ago. Both women are passionate about animal welfare. And both women, with many other volunteers, have worked tirelessly over the years to obtain thousands of pieces of donated jewelry from local jewelers and members of our community.

All proceeds support the Shelter’s mission of providing stray and unwanted companion animals with food, veterinary care, shelter, and ultimately loving “forever homes”.

Since its inception, the Jewelry Faire has raised over $100,000 and features new, old, estate, fine, handmade, and costume jewelry, and even “gently used” designer handbags.

Stop by the Faire and you will see moms, daughters, sisters, girlfriends, and even some men browsing the jewelry. Artists frequent the Faire for well-priced jewelry “bag lots” to repurpose into new creations. Volunteers and attendees chat about their favorite cat or dog. And you may even see some Shelter residents, who would be very happy to go home with you!

y Marley is very special to me, last week she contracted a parasite from eating something not good for her. While at the vet, we talked about how pets can get sick from certain things in our gardens. This prompted me to write this about your pets and your garden.

Although many pets will not eat outdoor plants, if they become curious or bored they may be tempted. Most plants in this area are perfectly fine for pets. However, there are a few plants to look out for if you are a pet owner. Some can be highly toxic if a significant amount of the plant is ingested.

If you suspect your pet has come in contact with a toxic plant, you should bring the material (if identified) to the vet. This will help the vet diagnose and treat the toxin. If symptoms are severe bring them to a 24-hour animal clinic or contact the Animal Poison Control Center (APCC), listed on the ASPCA website, www.aspca.org. You will need to have information ready so they will be able to help. It is always a good idea to have a first aid kit for your pet on hand that may include Benadryl, saline solution, and triple antibiotic ointment.

The ASPCA website is a good resource for a more comprehensive list of toxic indoor and outdoor plants with pictures and more information on what to do if you suspect your pet has been poisoned. Use caution and teach your pets to not nibble on plants outside, especially if you know any of the plants listed are planted in your yard.

Common toxic plants in your garden • AZALEA/RHODODENDRON: Moderately toxic to cats, seldom leads to clinical toxicities, but can cause stomach irritation and abdominal pain.

• BULB PLANTS (Tulips, Daffodils, Hyacinth, Narcissus, Iris): Can cause upset stomach, vomiting and diarrhea if eaten. It is best not to allow your pet access to stored bulbs or newly planted bulb beds.

• HYDRANGEA: While low in toxicity, it may cause stomach pains if enough of the flower heads are eaten.

NO MORE DORM ROOM DRAB! So it's August now, and many families have kids headed off to college. And after years of having their own rooms, decked out with all they need and the many comforts of home, they now land in a cramped, shared space, without personality, and likely with a stranger.

Let's face it, most dorm rooms start off looking like a prison cell.

But you can change all that, and without spending as much as tuition.

Here are some great tips for helping your college kid turn a drab dorm into a cool place to chill: • Add bright colors, lots of washable textiles, and supply multiple sets of sheets. Kids who are away from home for the first time may not do laundry as often as Mom would hope.

• Consider fabrics in bold, busy patterns. College kids eat and drink wherever they want, often on their dorm room beds. The patterns will help to hide the spilled dinners and sodas.

Purchase indoor outdoor rugs for durable and colorful floor coverings that can be cleaned with a hose.

• For the bare, often concrete block walls, consider peg board and magnetic boards for displaying class schedules, photos, etc.

They are functional and can fill the empty space. Some come with cool frames and attractive designs as well.- If your teen is looking for more, try painting old white and cream sheets with stencils, to make great wall coverings.

• Dorm beds are typically just a metal bed frame with a mattress. To make the small and cold dorm room feel more like home, build a temporary headboard out of plywood and cover with fabric or paint.

table for one Dating and dining converge at dining clubs

ining and dating seem like a perfect match for generating new relationships and good times. Many people are either “single-lookingto-mingle” or know someone who needs a social kick in the pants to get them into a meaningful and gratifying relationship. If you enjoy a good meal, and would like to engage your foodie side with new friends, a singles dining club might be right for you.

SingleSync is an organization that hosts weekly dinner parties and dinner dances called Gourmet Connections. Jim Senhauser (who goes by “Senny”) is the president and host for events.

“Hosting dining events is a great way to ‘break the ice’ in what sometimes can feel like an awkward situation for singles and the newlysingle (through divorce or the death of a spouse) as they get back into the adult dating world,” Senny says. “It is a comfortable approach to meeting and getting to know other singles over time who are in the same situation as you on a ‘friends-first’ basis. It is more natural than contrived party games, timed ‘mini-dates’ or fix-ups.”

And while the group atmosphere can spell relief for many who may feel the pressure of the

one-to-one blind date, Senny says that many first-timers remain nervous.

“One thing that I have found is that many singles are apprehensive the first time that they come to one of our parties. Their biggest fear is that nobody will talk to them. Often they bring a friend for support,” he explains. “What they don’t realize is that everybody has been in the same situation they are now. As a result, everybody is very friendly and outgoing and conversation flows freely. For any of our parties, over 90 percent of the people attending arrive by themselves.”

Senny went on to say the Gourmet Connections offers a “relational approach to meeting and dating.”

“Participants can expect to meet a lot of nice single people, who are friendly, outgoing and most of whom are interested in dating and developing relationships,” he says. “Ours is not a transactional approach like the Internet.

At every party, about a third of the participants are regular attendees for the area in which the party is being held, about a third are occasional attendees, and the other third are new attendees, Senny explains.

“This is our twelfth year in business, and we have generated numerous of marriages, relationships and lasting friendships,” Senny says. “My lawyer was one of the participants who met his wife at one of our events.”

Participants can choose to have a SingleSync membership or pay for each event separately.

“We have several levels of membership, with the most popular being free.” Senny explains, “Most events run between $30 and $40, including a full meal. Some are as little at $3-$15.”

Furthermore, the parties are all over the Chicago area, making it easy for anyone to join. Twothirds of the parties are in Chicago’s suburbs and one-third in the city.

“We host events as far north as Palatine and Highland Park and as far south as around I-55.

PROBIOTICS may be the next big thing in acne treatment

In recent years, probiotics have become synonymous with helping maintain good digestive health. Now, emerging research is finding that the benefits of probiotics may extend beyond the digestive tract to the skin. In fact, according to experts at the American Academy of Dermatology, skin prone to acne or rosacea has shown improvement with daily probiotic use, giving dermatologists reason to consider supplementing traditional acne therapy with a dose of this beneficial bacteria.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND PROBIOTICS EFFECT ON THE SKIN Most bacterial cells that live inside and on the body are harmless, and studies show that, in fact, they can be extremely beneficial to the body’s normal functioning. Whitney P. Bowe, MD, FAAD, notes that while the science of how probiotics can work to interfere with the development of acne and rosacea is very complex, researchers are studying how this type of healthy bacteria applied topically to the skin or taken orally can benefit these skin conditions.

CALMING EFFECT When certain types of probiotics are placed in contact with skin cells, they calm the parts of the cells that may want to react to the presence of bad bacteria that they see as a threat. These healthy signals produced by the probiotics stop the skin cells from sending “attack” messages to the immune system that result in flares of acne or rosacea.

TOPICALLY APPLIED PROBIOTICS Currently, some manufacturers have started using probiotics in their products based on this early research – including probiotic masks, creams or cleansers. ANTIMICROBIAL PROPERTIES Sometimes the substances produced by probiotics have antimicrobial properties, meaning they can create holes in bad bacteria and kill them, Bowe says. Similar to the way antibiotics work in the treatment of acne and rosacea, probiotics can help fight harmful bugs from triggering inflammation.

Bowe also reports that some of her patients are experimenting with probiotics by applying homemade Greek yogurt masks to their skin to control breakouts or flares. There is currently no research or studies that demonstrate the effectiveness of this home remedy.

ORAL PROBIOTICS Oral probiotics – sold as daily supplements containing Lactobacilli and/or Bifidobacterium, or in yogurts containing live cultures – could influence skin conditions such as acne and FASHION & BEAUTY

rosacea by affecting what is known as the “gut-brain-skin axis.” According to Bowe, stress, often in combination with processed comfort foods that lack fiber, can slow digestion. This, in turn, changes the type and number of bacteria that live in the gut to unhealthy bacteria.

Eventually, the gut lining becomes leaky and toxins are released into the bloodstream causing inflammation throughout the body. People who are predisposed to acne or rosacea can experience flares as a result of this shift in gut bacteria and subsequent inflammation.

To counteract flares of acne or rosacea associated with the “gut-brain-skin axis,” Bowe advises patients to find ways to help manage or cope with stress, fix their diet or introduce healthy bacteria to the gut in the form of probiotics. The probiotics will line the gut and create a healthy, sealed barrier that prevents inflammation that can trigger acne or rosacea.

“While more studies are needed to identify the most beneficial aspects of probiotics and determine whether topical or oral probotics yield the best results, I think we can expect to see some cutting-edge probiotic products for acne and rosacea in the near future,” Bowe says. “Until then, I would recommend that patients with acne or rosacea see their dermatologist to talk about adding foods with live active cultures, such as yogurt, to their diets or taking an oral probiotic supplement daily.” kanecountymagazine.com

ANSWER: I recommend to do this at night before bed to get all the day’s food and plaque out. You should use a c-shape when you floss.

Use a see-saw motion to get the floss through the area where the teeth touch to avoid snapping the floss in and hitting your gums hard.

QUESTION: What type of floss do you recommend?

ANSWER: Every patient is so different, so the type of floss a person needs depends specifically on their teeth. Floss threaders are good to get under a retainer or bridge.

If you have a hard time using string floss, I do recommend Plackers. Something getting between your teeth is better than nothing.

QUESTION: At what age should people start flossing? Why? ANSWER: The younger the better. It helps form the habit early on.

Shoes for women • Avoid wearing heels higher than two inches. If you choose to wear very high heels for a meeting or other work occasion, limit the time you’re in them and change into a lower, more comfortable pair as soon as possible.

• Vary heel height day-to-day. Look for “walking” pumps - also called “comfort” or “performance” pumps - with mid- to lower-heels. The APMA offers a list of shoes that have earned its Seal of Acceptance for promoting good foot health.

• Look for plenty of toe room. Ideally, pumps with wider, rounded or square toe boxes give your toes more room. Avoid shoes with pointy toes that squeeze digits into unnatural positions. Cramped toes can cause a host of foot woes, from bunions to ingrown toenails. kanecountymagazine.com

• Beware ballet flats. You may think no-heel shoes are better for your feet, but often that’s not the case. Ballet flats offer little cushioning or support, and can also cause foot problems such as plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the tendon that connects the heel bone to the toes.

showcase LAVERNE BOHLIN | Aurora “QUIET EVENING� SOFT PASTEL Landscape paintings by Laverne Bohlin have been described as colorful, serene, and peaceful. “I love the outdoors and find a serenity and expansiveness in natural settings that I don’t find elsewhere,� Bohlin says. Although her work often depicts ordinary scenes that are experienced by many, looking, seeing and recording the effects of light on the landscape is the essence of her work.

Laverne’s love of nature began in a resort town on Lake Erie where she was born and raised.

After high school, she majored in fine art and spent summers working as a portrait artist at an amusement park. Her formal art training was at The University of Michigan where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

Using soft pastels or oil paint, Bohlin’s work mainly depicts the landscape and flora in the Midwest. “I look for areas where nature has been allowed to flourish in addition to painting cultivated gardens,� she says. “Living in a suburban area has caused me to focus on the remnants of natural areas that are close to my home. Classes in horticulture taught me plant identification and helped me realize the importance of the local ecology. I am inspired to make art that shares my love of the natural world and heightens others awareness of the environment.�

Bohlin’s poetic paintings and drawings exhibited over the years have appealed to many private collectors. Her process is to develop finished paintings based on plein air studies, memory and photographs of the landscape. In addition to participating in local and national shows, she teaches pastel drawing workshops at the Fine Line, Cantigny Park and The Morton Arboretum. Honoring a Local Legacy through a National Partnership An estimated 1.5 million Americans are living with Parkinson’s disease. In 2007, Geneva’s Paul Ruby created the Paul Ruby Foundation for Parkinson’s Disease with a mission to find a cure for the disease with which he had been recently diagnosed. Paul’s vision was to improve the quality of life for those impacted by Parkinson’s, and to create awareness about the disease.

Three years prior, and in the foothills of the Rockies, Olympic medalist and Tour de France stage winner Davis Phinney set out to share what he’d discovered since learning he had Parkinson’s: that although he could not change the diagnosis, there was much he could do to change how he lived with the disease. The same determination, optimism and conviction that brought Davis success as a cyclist applied naturally to his approach to Parkinson’s: set goals and strive for the best possible results. From these beginnings, the Davis Phinney Foundation was born.

St. Charles residents Dave Sheble and Craig Bixler had an idea: After sweltering temperatures and relentless sunshine at the 2007 Chicago Marathon resulted in a less than stellar experience, the duo had the realization that the Fox Valley was an ideal setting for its own race.

“Our beautiful, flat and shady paths that run along the scenic Fox River keep your mind fresh and your body cool as the miles roll by,” says Sheble.

Fox Valley Marathon is Born and Receives National Praise In 2010, Sheble and Bixler made their dream a reality by establishing the Fox Valley Marathon, an annual tradition that has sold out every year since its inception, and promises to do the same for the September 21 event this year.

“The Fox Valley Marathon, with an ideal setting, event date and geographic location has become the premier running event in Chicago’s western suburbs,” says Sheble, now the race’s co-director.

“While it won’t grow to be the size of the megaraces, it has grown large enough to become well known nationwide as a great destination marathon with all the big race amenities, small race hospitality and a beautiful, fast and friendly course.”

Sheble adds that the race is good for both veteran runners looking for a fast Boston (Marathon) Qualifier as well as first time racers looking for an uncrowded, supportive and family-friendly setting.

In addition to receiving positive feedback from race participants, the Fox Valley Marathon was named “Best Marathon, 2012” by Chicago Magazine, one of the “Top 25 Midwest Marathons” by Chicago Athlete Magazine, one of the “10 Must-Do Midwest Races” by Competitor Magazine and one of the

have to choose which race they will run until packet pickup, two days before the event.

While the majority of the 3,500 to 4,000 runners are from Illinois, the Fox Valley Marathon also attracts race enthusiasts from an average of 40 states each year and has welcomed runners from Canada, India, Japan, Romania, the Netherlands, Brazil, Germany and Australia.

Leading up to race weekend, the Fox Valley Marathon hosts a free series of course “test drives” six times during the summer, bringing hundreds of runners to the Fox Valley area.

The Three Races The three races, taking place on Sunday of the weekend event, offer a variety of distances to meet the needs of each runner. All begin and finish in downtown St. Charles, and take runners though the towns of Geneva, Batavia, North Aurora and Aurora. They include the Half Marathon (13.1 miles), the Marathon (26.2 Miles) and the Fall Final 20, timed purposely three weeks before the Chicago Marathon to provide a sort of “dress rehearsal” to those who wish to journey on to that big-city race.

“Unlike street marathons, Fox Valley’s course, 95 percent of which is made up of river trails, gives runners the chance to experience the actual race course all summer long,” Sheble says.

Participants receive a race T-shirt and those who finish are awarded a medal. Returning marathoners from past years receive a second, high-quality medal to recognize their dedication and commitment to endurance races.

After months of planning and cooperation, the City of Geneva has given its approval to a route change that will add approximately 1.2 miles to the course through downtown Geneva. Runners will now be able to see all that Geneva has to offer in it’s downtown area including 3rd Street.
