Masonic Fraternal Lodge Building - Plainfield In September 2013, downtown Plainfield was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Plainfield is one of only 15 downtowns in the State of Illinois on the National Register.

The National Register District in Plainfield extends along both sides of Lockport Street between Route 59 on the east to James Street and Main Street on the west. The entire historic area includes 53 properties.

Within the historic district, a variety of old buildings, some dating back to the 1840s, showcase different architectural styles, including Greek Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, Richardsonian Romanesque and International.

The four-block section consists of the historic commercial and civic core of the village and includes notable buildings, such as the Clock Town Building, the Plymouth Congregational Church and the Masonic Lodge.

The history of the Masonic Fraternal Lodge in Plainfield can be traced back to October 1867 when it was chartered.

In 1891, the Masonic building burned, and this left the Masons without a meeting place. Plans immediately were made to build a new building and two lots were bought on the northeast corner of Lockport and Des Plaines Streets.

Constructed in 1892, Masonic Lodge 536 was designed by architect J.E. Minott, and built by the Aurora firm of Hall and Doane.

The two-story building, occupying two lots, was built in the Queen Anne style. The distinctive corner of the building is marked with a decorative pressed metal turret window, four double hung windows and capped with a unique onion-shaped corner dome.

The highly ornamented cornice runs along the entire south and west elevation of the building. A pedimented peak is situated above the arched window on the south side of the building. Within the pediment is a nameplate inscribed with “Masonic Block.”

Joliet Junior College hatches new initiatives to attract, retain students

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Junior College will be focused on increasing enrollment next year, including at its new City Center and Romeoville campuses.

The City Center building in downtown Joliet opened this spring semester, and an expanded Romeoville location is slated to open next fall.

With enrollment at the college declining from its peak four years ago, some concerns about the occupancy levels at the college’s facilities were shared by candidates running for the college’s Board of Trustees in March.

But JJC officials plan to continue increasing enrollment through their

strategic enrollment management, or SEM, plan. Kelly Rohder, JJC’s spokeswoman, said in an email that the college has been pleased with the accomplishments of the SEM plan.

“With some of those early successes, we believe working in this integrated effort has been helpful, and we will continue to see those successes as the new buildings come online,” Rohder said.

The new City Center building that opened this spring had 1,375 students, a 48 percent increase from the enrollment when classes were held in the hotel space in the college’s downtown location, according to JJC. City Center has a total of 38 classrooms and laboratories and, if all classrooms were at maximum capacity at

the same time, its total capacity would be 811 students.

Rohder said in an email that the campus has additional classrooms open that were not complete at the time of its “soft opening” in January, and more classes will be offered this fall than at the start of the spring semester.

For the past spring semester, the Romeoville campus had 2,113 students and averages 4,000 students annually.

The campus is being expanded with 12 more classrooms and laboratories after a 45 percent enrollment growth in the past decade. The location currently has 26 classrooms and laboratories and a total capacity of 643 students.

Both facilities are among the many projects under the college’s master

plan, which is focused on meeting the academic and space needs for the college through facility planning.

JJC officials began a master planning process in 2008 to complete several major projects. In 2008, voters approved the college’s $89 million bond referendum to support the master plan that was one of three financing options for an overall $220 million master plan, according to JJC. The plan received an update in 2013.

At an April 25 board meeting, college officials unveiled plans to boost enrollment that has declined from peak years between 2009 and 2013 through extensive marketing and a new SEM

Randy Buck lived his dream “Randy always said life was about good music, good barbecue sauce and the love of a good woman.”

MINOOKA – Randy Buck and Kelly Strache never left the farmer’s market without first performing a certain routine.

“He’d twirl me around and we’d dance,” Kelly said. “It was his ‘good luck’ thing.”

But when Kelly heads out to the Kankakee Farmers Market this month, she’ll leave without the lucky dance.

Randy died suddenly of a massive stroke Jan. 13 at age 57, so Kelly plans to sell the remainder of his immensely popular homemade “Gourmet on the Go” barbecue sauce at the market and through email requests.

“He was lucky enough that he could do that,” Kelly said. “He had the opportunity to live his dream. ... To make his business what it could be.”

Kelly said Randy started making sauces when he worked in his parents’ former restaurant in Rochelle, where Randy had grown up.

During that time, Randy developed three varieties that he gave as gifts and occasionally sold at farmer’s markets: Chicago blues, sweet Hawaiian pineapple and sweet and smoky Mali onion, Kelly said.

Around 2000, Randy focused less on the restaurant and more on cooking for private events.

“He kind of specialized in canoe trips and barbecues,” Kelly said, “The kind of catering if you were having a graduation party and wanted someone to barbecue on site, that kind of thing.”

But when Randy moved to Minooka in 2006 to be closer to Kelly, that’s when Randy really hit the sauce-making. He stepped up his experiments with flavors and expanded the number of varieties he made and the number of markets he frequented.

“He had about 75 [varieties] that had gone through the experimenting process and had labels,” Kelly said.

Kelly said Randy’s favorite markets were in Morris, Frankfort, Oswego, Kankakee and Wilmington.

The couple also participated in several local craft fairs, such as Christmas Crossroads in Lockport, Kelly said.

“He also liked hiring local youth to help at the markets and teach them about work ethic and selling with passion,” Kelly said in an email.

One flavor, peanut butter and jelly chipotle, was as perfect for dipping onion rings as it was for adding to burgers, Kelly said.

“A lot of places put peanut butter on their burgers. It sticks to the food really well,” Kelly said. “This is peanut butter with a lot more flavor.”

Randy also had an affectionate pet name for his customers: Pepper Heads. Kelly said Randy loved listening to their ideas and sharing recipe ideas.

“Everybody loved Randy,” Kelly said. “He really connected with

people.”

Randy’s sauce-making spilled over into rub-making, and Kelly will sell the rest of those, too. At last glance, Kelly said remaining flavors included mesquite, Jamaican and salt-free.

Randy developed the salt-free rubs for his customers on salt-free diets, even though proper rubs require salt to properly flavor and tenderize meat, she said. “[Otherwise] it’s just seasoning, not a real rub,” Kelly said.

Kelly said many people don’t understand the amount of time that goes

into creating a product for farmer’s markets. For Randy, it was more than a full-time occupation.

“We rented a commercial kitchen,” Kelly sad. “So he made sauces there five days a week and sold them for two days, so he worked seven days a week.

But if it’s your passion, it’s not like working at all.”

When Randy did take time off, he rode his motorcycle with his friends, which he called, “the best therapy around,” Kelly said in an email. Randy also loved taking his two dogs to romp at a dog park.

“Jenny and Jasper – two little Jack Russells,” Jenny said. “They were his pride and joy. They kept him grounded. He couldn’t get too lost in making his sauces because he knew had to come home and take care of them.”

In fact, Randy didn’t need much to make him happy.

“Randy always said life was about good music, good barbecue sauce and the love of a good woman,” Kelly said.

Once Randy’s stock is sold, that’s it, Kelly said, as Randy’s recipes died with him. The only item she will keep producing is coffee rub, since it’s her formula.

Randy wasn’t a fan of this rub at first, which also includes Mexican dark chocolate, Kelly said, until celebrity chefs popularized them. That’s when Randy said to her, “Tell me more about this coffee rub.”

Kelly teased him right back.

“I said, ‘You won’t believe me, but you’ll believe Bobby Flay,’ ” Kelly said. “Then we made it and gave it to our best customers for feedback. And then we tweaked it.”

Seniors set to depart with World Race Gap Year

Shaw Media correspondent Minooka Community High School seniors Abigael Pena and Alyssa Mayfield both want to land a job in the mission field, so to get a taste of a missionary life, they will spend nine months with the World Race Gap Year.

From September 2017 to May 2018, while many newly graduated students are in their first year of college or trade school, with only the pack on their back, these two will journey on this mission for college-aged young adults to minister to the sick, the poor and the forgotten.

“I wasn’t big into school at first, and I know I want to do full-time mission work, so what a better way for me to figure out if mission work is for me,” Mayfield said. “I’m thinking, after this is done, I will go to Liberty University for global studies and get a degree in what I want to do.”

Mission work is not new to these students. Both have been to St. Lucia for a two-week mission with their church, Minooka Bible Church, to teach Bible camp to the children.

Pena went on a mission to Bulgaria with the same church to minister to gypsies and teach a day camp to children.

“I was a freshman in high school when I went to St. Lucia. I thought I

could not do that, but my pastor said I would have fun. That was the best trip, and that’s when I realized I wanted to do this long term. My trip to Bulgaria further pushed me, confirming that I wanted to go into missions,” Pena said.

As well as St. Lucia, Mayfield has been to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, with her church three times and went to work with a fellow classmate in Mexico with a music ministry. While in Haiti, Mayfield helped to construct homes for widows, performed skits for orphans and worked closely with Faith in Action Orphanage, which is a part of Don Shire Ministries.

“I feel called to go each time. It lights a spark in me each time I go help with the orphans – I feel fulfilled,” Mayfield said.

Each racer gets to choose which out of the six routes they would like to take. Most of the time, the racer is granted their first choice. For nine months, Pena will travel to Swaziland and Lesotho in Southern Africa, India, Nepal, Nicaragua and Guatemala.

“I’m excited to see other countries and the cultures, and of course save people,” Pena said. “I’ll be so far away from home for so long in other countries doing what I love.”

Mayfield will take a different route than Pena. She will visit Thailand, Cambodia, Honduras, Guatemala and Ethiopia. She said she is most excited to work in the field of sex trafficking.

“I have never worked in sex trafficking, and I think it’s something everyone should work with because people are blind to it and think it’s not a real thing. Being a young woman, I hope to connect with these young

“She will see other parts of the world, and hopefully she will come back with compassion. She will learn a lot of life lessons you don’t get going away to college,” Jen Mayfield said.

To prepare, both girls are required to get a yellow fever shot, but also will have other immunizations as well as take malaria medications.

The World Race Gap Year costs about $15,000, which covers food, shelter and transportation. Gear costs about $1,500, and money for souvenirs and any necessities along the way is brought separately. The girls will sleep in houses, outside in tents and under shelters and they will wash clothes in any water that can be found.

She said the college has established a new communications center that will provide outreach to prospective and current students, emphasizing personal interaction, engagement and facilitating support for students who need help with completing the enrollment process.

“Overall, the investments the college has made over the last 10 years to improve and expand our facilities are critical milestones in our quest to be the first choice for our [JJC District 525] and beyond,” Rohder said.

Mayfield said she is $500 shy of her goal to the $15,000 and still needs to earn extra spending money. Pena has about $6,000 in her savings, so she still is in the thick of her fundraising efforts.

As time gets closer, both girls have thought about fears of being in remote areas of the world for nine months.

Mayfield said she fears getting sick and kidnapped, and Pena said her fear is getting sick as well.

Let’s honor Vietnam veterans

Last week, I overheard some friends discussing the Vietnam War and how sad it was when they came home to a country that wanted to shame them instead of honor them.

I remember that time. I was in high school and, as a teenager, couldn’t wrap my mind around the idea of war and why our country would be involved in such a thing. I was born during a time of peace; war made no sense to me.

I participated in peace marches and candle-lighting ceremonies, but as a way to promote peace not to shame those who were drafted into the war.

My own uncle served in Vietnam and I kept in contact with him by sending him letters.

Craig Goode served two years in Vietnam. He grew up in Illinois, graduated high school and by Christmas time that same year, he received his draft notice. His only choice, he said, was picking which branch of the service he would join.

He chose the Navy and spent two years in Vietnam. He considers himself among the lucky ones, although a

dozen of his classmates died over there.

But he came home alive and raised a family.

When he was discharged from the Navy and heading home, the stewardess on the airplane advised the military men to change into civilian clothes.

“She told us we were in danger from our fellow man,” Goode said.

It was like a slap in the face; a rude awakening to find out that they were not being welcomed home. They had heard bits and pieces of what was going on back home on Armed Forces Radio.

Goode had read a newspaper depicting the riots in Chicago protesting the war during the Democratic National Convention.

But stepping off the plane at O’Hare Airport at 19 years old, after doing the honorable thing for his country, and not receiving any acknowledgement,

was hard to take.

“I didn’t expect a band or anything,” Goode said. “But I wasn’t going to some communist country. I was coming home. I was happy. I couldn’t believe it.”

The world he came home to was different than the one that he had left.

People threw rocks at his fellow servicemen and called them baby killers.

Recently, Goode was struck by a Facebook page that showed the replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in California that had been defaced with graffiti. He was at a loss for how anyone could do such a thing and how people could have so little respect for our country or the 58,000 young men who died over there.

“There were such honorable guys that gave their lives,” Goode said. “A friend from Arizona is still a vegetable in a nursing home from his wounds.”

On April 23, 1975, in a speech at Tulane University, President Gerald Ford declared the end of the Vietnam War “as far as Americans were concerned,” according to a Newsweek article on

May 5 of that year.

On April 30, 1975, the last Americans were airlifted out as Saigon fell to the communists.

While we will soon remember all veterans who died for their country on Memorial Day, Goode feels it’s mostly the World War II and Korean War veterans who are honored during special services. He would like to see Vietnam veterans receive the same kind of recognition as their brothers.

“Perhaps the cruelest intrusion of Vietnam upon America was what it did to a generation of American youth,” wrote Editor Richard Steele in the 1975 article. “It sent thousands of men fleeing into self-imposed exile and turned their neighbors and their nation against them. It turned thousands of others into radicals – if only temporarily – and brought violent riots to city streets and college campuses. It claimed the lives of 55,000 American men.”

Early-morning stop

The episode began about 1:40 a.m April 8. In his report, Kampmeier wrote that he stopped a silver 2005 Ford F-150 pickup on Somonauk Street near High Street after he saw the driver almost cause a traffic accident at the intersection of State and California streets.

Reasons given for the stop were noted as “fail to signal, overtake on right, no front license plate.”

In his report, Kampmeier wrote that the driver, Whaley, smelled strongly of alcohol. His speech was “thicktongued,” his eyes glassy and bloodshot, his movements “slow and deliberate.”

Whaley told Kampmeier he had recently dropped off his wife and child downtown, then changed his story to say he was in the area for training and had one beer in Sycamore before driving, according to Kampmeier’s report.

A story by the Daily Herald about Whaley saving a boy’s life with CPR in 2011 said he lived near DeKalb at the time.

After Whaley refused field sobriety tests, Kampmeier arrested him on suspicion of DUI, records show. A second officer, Blake Powers searched Whaley’s vehicle and found an unopened bottle of Miller Lite near the passenger seat, according to police reports. Powers stayed at the scene as Whaley’s truck was towed, records show.

“During the investigation, I learned Whaley was employed by the City of Elgin,” Kampmeier wrote. “I also learned the truck was registered to the City of Elgin.”

No sergeant was on duty in Sycamore that morning. Kampmeier contacted the officer in charge, who notified Cmdr. Mike Anderson, who contacted Theriault, phone records show.

In a text message exchange that apparently was with Anderson, Theriault asked the commander to go to the station. Anderson said he would update the chief if something went wrong.

“I’ll go in as well, just don’t want them feeling unduly pressured by the former EPD guy/chief,” Theriault told him by text. Theriault worked for Elgin police for 20 years, rising to the rank of commander, before joining the Syca-

more force as chief in January 2015.

Swoboda said Whaley has been on the Elgin force about 15 years, and that he and Theriault would have worked together. He did not know whether Theriault had ever been Whaley’s direct supervisor.

Anderson and Theriault engaged in a four-minute phone call at 2:19 a.m., according to phone records. At 3:24 a.m., Theriault called Elgin Police Cmdr.

The report shows the investigation changed course after Kampmeier brought Whaley to the police station and processed him.

“Whaley refused to provide a breath sample,” Kampmeier wrote in the report. “ … Based on my observations and lack of evidence, I released Whaley without charges. City of Elgin administrators were notified regarding the incident.

“Case closed.”

In a memo from Deputy Chief Jim Winters on April 12, police were asked to preserve any dashcam video of the incident, as well as video from inside the police station and other records.

Sycamore officials did not release any video to Shaw Media, citing their internal investigation.

No arrest, no fee

About noon April 8, Theriault received a text message, again apparently from Anderson, telling him Whaley had come to the police station to pay the administrative towing fee for his vehicle.

“Are we waiving?” the text asked.

“And how do we document that?”

“No arrest so no admin fee,” Theriault replied. “Just pays Accurate for tow. [Kampmeier] said he was calling Accurate to advise. Not sure if he did.”

The towing company was called and made sure they knew to waive the fee, according to a follow-up message.

The city’s ordinance regarding administrative towing, which was passed with Theriault’s backing in April 2016, says that in order to have an administrative fee waived, the vehicle’s owner must request a hearing “within 12 hours of the seizure.”

If a hearing is requested, the city is required to schedule one “within 24 hours, excluding Sundays and holidays.”

Sycamore police routinely have

people’s vehicles towed and held based merely on the standard of “probable cause” to believe they were used in a crime including DUI. Vehicles are not released unless the $500 fee is paid, plus towing costs. The code does not address situations in which a vehicle is towed and a person is later released without charges.

Text messages show an Elgin police lieutenant was to go to the Sycamore station April 11 to pick up the police reports about the incident. Elgin police could not immediately be reached for comment on whether they are doing their own investigation into the incident or what role the department had in the events of that night.

Fallout

Word about the decision to release Whaley spread through the Sycamore police ranks quickly.

“Heads up, apparently dayshift got the rumor mill fired up,” Kampmeier texted Theriault on the afternoon of April 8. “I have already gotten a phone call and a few messages about last night.

I made it clear that it was my decision.”

City officials denied a request for any records showing complaints by members of the public, Sycamore police officers or their union about Theriault, citing their ongoing internal investigation. But on April 10, City Manager Brian Gregory notified Theriault he was being placed on paid leave.

Early on April 11, Theriault sent a message to Gregory and offered to come in for an interview.

“Still in dismay,” Theriault wrote before 8 a.m. “… Just want to offer a few thoughts, particularly as it relates to what happens after this given I am extremely confident the outcome will be exonerated.”

Gregory’s response came later that day: a more detailed letter notifying Theriault he had been placed on paid administrative leave. Theriault has been temporarily stripped of police powers and was required to turn in department-issued equipment; he is barred from city property or having contact with any city employees, according to the notice from Gregory. Gregory has declined to comment on the matter because it is a personnel issue.

The city has hired Lansing-based REM Management Services to investigate the incident, records show.

The fights caused the carnival to shut down at 9:30 p.m., a half-hour before it was scheduled to close at 10 p.m.

SYCAMORE – Police Chief Glenn Theriault has been on administrative leave since April 10 as the city investigates why an Elgin police officer arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence was released without charges.

Records obtained by the Daily Chronicle through the Freedom of Information Act request show a Sycamore officer was building a driving under the influence case against Elgin Police Sgt. Mark Whaley after an early-morning traffic stop April 8. Whaley, Glenn who has been a police of- Theriault ficer for almost 23 years, was handcuffed and driven to the police station, where he was processed. Theriault, who worked with Whaley on the Elgin police force, also went to the police station that night.

Whaley later was released without even a traffic ticket because of a lack of evidence, according to the police report.

The report shows Whaley, 46, declined field sobriety tests and refused to provide a breath sample at the police station. It does not say whether Whaley was issued a DUI ticket or read the “warning to motorist” that could have triggered a suspension of his license for a year for refusing chemical testing under Illinois law.

Cellphone records show Theriault had three early-morning phone conversations with an Elgin police commander and later helped to ensure that a $500 administrative towing fee was waived for Whaley, bypassing a hearing process prescribed by city code.

“Tough position for you and all last night,” read a text sent by Theriault hours later to the arresting officer, Luke Kampmeier. “I’m thinking of the rock and glass houses story …”

“A valuable experience for me, albeit unpleasant,” Kampmeier replied. “Tonight we will stick to parking tickets.”

City officials and Theriault have not commented, although in an email to his boss, the city manager, Theriault said he is confident “the outcome will be exonerated” in the case.

Elgin Police Chief Jeff Swoboda said his department had no role in the decision to release Whaley.

“We were notified he was arrested for the DUI, but now we are told he’s not, he wasn’t arrested and no ticket,” Swoboda said. “So now we’re still looking and seeing what that means as well.”

aortiz@shawmedia.com Officer Brian Heath was named the Plainfield Police Department’s 2016 Officer of the Year, which recognizes his exceptional and professional service to both the department and village.

Heath has been with the Plainfield police from 2008 to 2009 and then from 2011 to today. He has received several department awards and letters of recognition during his career.

In a news release, Police Chief John J. Konopek said “Officer Heath is described by his peers as self-motivated, knowledgeable and professional officer who is always willing to help other with a positive attitude.”

“Becky” Marzetta received the department’s 2016 Civilian of the Year award also for exceptional and professional service to the department and village.

Marzetta originally joined the village as a records technician in 2005 and in 2014 was hired as the new executive assistant of the Patrol Division.

She also handles grant documentation for the Illinois Department of Transportation, manages the patrol schedule and makes sure staffing is accurate and sufficient.

“During 2016, Becky exceeded each and every expectation set forth by her immediate supervisor,” the release said. “Although Becky had an ample amount of work already, she took on and willingly accepted several additional tasks.”

Theresa K. Adams, age 95, of Joliet, passed away peacefully, Saturday, May 13, 2017, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center, with her loving family by her side.

She was born December 7, 1921, in Joliet, to Josef and Sophie (Luscher) Kump, and was a graduate of St. John the Baptist Grade School and Joliet Township High School, Class of 1939. She was an active parishioner of the Cathedral of St. Raymond and a former member of the Council of Catholic Women.

Theresa loved being a homemaker and taking care of her family. She was always loving, positive and encouraging and will be remembered for her supportive dedication to her husband and children, along with her excellent sewing and baking skills. She was a cherished grandmother, great-grandmother and greatgreat-grandmother.

Surviving are her beloved husband of 74 years, Bert G. Adams Sr.; her children, Bert G. Adams Jr. of Corona del Mar, CA, Jacqueline K. (Robert) Pedersen of Joliet, Beverly J. (late Joseph) Vota of Shorewood, Robert L. (Teresa) Adams of Channahon, and William D. Adams of Joliet; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; many nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Betty Kump.

He was born on August 21, 1928, in Elwood, IL the son of the late Fred R. and Minnie L. (nee Meier) Goodwin. Beloved husband of the late Madeline J. Goodwin (nee Agazzi). Howard was a longtime member of Richards Street United Methodist Church, Joliet and most recently attended United Methodist Church of Channahon. He retired in 1990 from Modern Builders Industrial Concrete Company after 41 years of service. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend who will be deeply missed by his family and his community.

He is survived by his three children, Paul Goodwin and wife, Paula, Mary Iverson and Maureen Gedvilas and husband, Tim. Proud Grandfather of Zakarji (Jennifer) Iverson, Jenni (Mike) Jajkowski, Joshua (Kara) Goodwin, Jakob (Danielle Chaplin) Iverson, Matthew Gedvilas and Kelly Gedvilas; dear great-grandfather of Becka Iverson, Colin Jajkowski, Austin Jajkowski, Drew Goodwin, Jaxson Iverson, Olivia Jajkowski, Bryce Goodwin and Addison Iverson.

A dentist who practices in Manhattan, Weissbard said he has no ill-will against his five-term congressman, Republican Leonard Lance, who voted against the health bill. Nonetheless, Weissbard will oppose Lance to send a message to the White House.

In Illinois, Scown said Trump’s move shows why “the whole administration scares many of us.” Whatever “displeases him,” she said, “he gets rid of.”

Trump maintains a hold on his core supporters – about 40 percent according to many polls – but the intensity of voters such as Scown and Weissbard offer encouragement for Democrats.

The party needs to flip 24 seats to seize control of the House. Democrats’ top targets are about two dozen GOP-held seats around the country in places such as Arizona, Florida, California and Colorado, where Democrat Hillary Clinton beat Trump. Of the 217 Republicans who backed the bill, 14 come from districts carried by Clinton.

Also surviving is one son, Seth (Rosa) Martin of Pontiac, IL; two daughters, Diane Martin of Pontiac, IL and Peggy (Ken) Hensel of Columbia, MO; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her siblings, Kathryn (David) Compton, Kenneth (Betty) Johnson, Maxine Shavez, Beverly (Garey) Evans; and many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Wendell Royce Martin Jr.; one grandson, Jake Martin; and two siblings, Richard and Donna Johnson.

Irene was educated in the Pontiac schools.

She drove a school bus in the Joliet area.

She was a member of the Livingston County Assembly of God. Irene liked doing crafts,

crocheting, fishing, and most of all, her grand babies. Irene was a loving wife, mom, grandma, great-grandma, sister, aunt, and friend who will be greatly missed.

McHENRY – Skeleton in hand, retired biology teacher Jeannie Scown delivered a message to her Republican congressman at his office northwest of Chicago.

“Killed by Trumpcare Plague, May 4, 2017,” her poster read.

In a nod to House Republicans’ recent vote to gut the health care law, Scown had no intention of sparing Rep. Randy Hultgren with subtlety.

“He has to understand that sick people vote, too,” Scown said, “and we are going to go get them and take them to the polls if they can’t get there themselves, because we are tired of being used.”

Americans vented similar frustrations this past week in Republican districts crucial to GOP majority control of the House, sounding off about health care and President Donald Trump’s abrupt firing of FBI Director James Comey. Democrats see in these displays evidence of the enthusiasm necessary for them to break the GOP’s monopoly control of Washington in next year’s midterm elections.

Republicans in some districts faced a backlash at raucous town halls over their votes for the House health care bill. There were plenty of complaints about a provision that would allow insurers to charge seriously ill people higher rates if they let their coverage lapse. Other lawmakers avoided holding forums.

The first political tests are just weeks away. In Montana, folk singer-turned-politician Rob Quist is trying to win his state’s at-large House seat in a May 25 special election. In Georgia, Democrat Jon Ossoff has raised more than $10 million ahead of a June special election in a suburban Atlanta district last represented by Trump’s health secretary, Tom Price.

But party operatives and their aligned groups are primed for an offensive even if Ossoff and Quist fall short.

Outside groups have started television and digital ads against vulnerable Republicans who voted for the bill, and liberal grassroots groups are organizing “Adopt-A-District” town halls that send Democratic House members into Republican districts where the local representative has no scheduled open forums.

One of the first sessions was Friday in Kenosha, Wisconsin, in House Speaker Paul Ryan’s district. With Ryan elsewhere in Wisconsin — public events but not open town halls — his neighboring Democratic colleague, Mark Pocan, greeted the speaker’s constituents at a union hall.

“Paul is the person who essentially drafted this health care bill,” Pocan said, ahead of the gathering. “We need to know that his constituents have every tool possible to try to influence him in a different direction.”

Defending himself, Ryan told reporters on Friday: “It’s not that I’m not doing town halls. I’m getting around to see constituents all the time.

I’m doing office hours, I’m doing telephone town halls, I’m doing business interviews. I’m doing it in a way so constituents don’t go into a harassing environment.”

Torch-wielding group protests statue removal

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – A group that included a well-known white nationalist carried torches and chanted “you will not replace us” at a weekend protest in Virginia over plans to remove a monument of a Confederate general.

The protesters on Saturday evening called on officials to halt the removal of a Gen. Robert E. Lee statue in Charlottesville and were swiftly condemned by the city’s mayor, who said the event appeared to hearken “back to the days of the KKK,” the Daily Progress newspaper reported.

North Korea says new long-range missile can carry heavy nuke

The Associated Press SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea said Monday the missile it launched over the weekend was a new type of long-range ballistic rocket that can carry a heavy nuclear warhead.

North Korean propaganda must be considered with wariness, but if confirmed, the claim marks another big step forward in the country’s escalating efforts to field a nuclear-tipped missile capable of reaching the U.S. mainland.

Outside experts don’t believe the North can do that yet, but each new test pushes them closer to the goal.

The launch Sunday is an immediate challenge to South Korea’s new leader, a liberal elected just five days earlier who expressed a desire to reach out to North Korea. The country’s push to boost its weapons program also makes it one of the Trump administration’s most urgent foreign policy worries.

The missile flew for half an hour and reached an unusually high altitude before landing in the Sea of Japan, the South Korean, Japanese and U.S. militaries said. Tokyo said the flight pattern could indicate a new type of missile.

North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency called the missile a “new ground-toground medium long-range strategic ballistic rocket Hwasong-12” that’s “capable of carrying a large-size heavy nuclear warhead.” Leader Kim Jong Un was said to have witnessed the

test and “hugged officials in the field of rocket research, saying that they worked hard to achieve a great thing,” according to KCNA. The launch jeopardizes new South Korean President Moon Jae-in’s willingness to talk to the North, and came as U.S., Japanese and European navies gather for joint war games in the Pacific.

“The president expressed deep regret over the fact that this reckless provocation ... occurred just days after a new government was launched in South Korea,” senior presidential secretary Yoon Young-chan said. “The president said we are leaving open the possibility of dialogue with North Korea, but we should sternly deal with a provocation to prevent North Korea from miscalculating.”

Moon, South Korea’s first liberal leader in nearly a decade, said as he took his oath of office last week that he’d be willing to visit the North if the circumstances were right.

The U.N. Security Council will hold closed consultations about the launch on Tuesday afternoon, according to the U.N. Mission for Uruguay, which holds the council presidency this month.

U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley said on ABC television that the U.S. has been working well with China, Pyongyang’s closest ally, and she raised the possibility of new sanctions against North Korea including on oil imports.

The Security Council has adopted six increasingly tougher sanctions resolutions against North Korea.

LONDON – Employees booting up computers at work Monday could see red as they discover they’re victims of a global “ransomware” cyberattack that has created chaos in 150 countries and could wreak even greater havoc as more malicious variations appear.

As a loose global network of cybersecurity experts fought the ransomware hackers, officials and experts on Sunday urged organizations and companies to update older Microsoft operating systems immediately to ensure they aren’t vulnerable to a second, more powerful version of the software – or to future versions that can’t be stopped.

The initial attack, known as “WannaCry,” paralyzed computers that run Britain’s hospital network, Germany’s

national railway and scores of other companies and government agencies worldwide in what was believed to be the biggest online extortion scheme ever recorded.

Microsoft took aim at the U.S. government for “stockpiling” software code that was used by unknown hackers to launch the attacks. The hackers exploited software code from the National Security Agency that leaked online.

The company’s top lawyer said the government should report weaknesses they discover to software companies rather than seek to exploit them.

“An equivalent scenario with conventional weapons would be the U.S. military having some of its Tomahawk missiles stolen,” attorney Brad Smith wrote on Microsoft’s blog.

New variants of the rapidly replicating worm were discovered Sunday and one did not include the so-called kill

switch that allowed researchers to interrupt its spread Friday by diverting it to a dead end on the internet.

Ryan Kalember, senior vice president at Proofpoint Inc. which helped stop its spread, said the version without a kill switch was able to spread but was benign because it contained a flaw that wouldn’t allow it to take over a computer and demand ransom to unlock files.

However, he said it’s only a matter of time before a malevolent version exists.

“I still expect another to pop up and be fully operational,” Kalember said.

“We haven’t fully dodged this bullet at all until we’re patched against the vulnerability itself.”

The attack held users hostage by freezing their computers, popping up a red screen with the words, “Oops, your files have been encrypted!” and demanding money through online bitcoin payment – $300 at first, rising to $600 be-

fore it destroys files hours later.

The ransomware attack was particularly malicious, because if just one person in an organization clicked on an infected attachment or bad link, all the computers in a network would be infected, said Vikram Thakur, technical director of Symantec Security Response.

“That’s what makes this more troubling than ransomware was a week ago,” Thakur said.

It hit 200,000 victims across the world since Friday and is seen as an “escalating threat,” said Rob Wainwright, the head of Europol, Europe’s policing agency.

“The numbers are still going up,” Wainwright said. “We’ve seen that the slowdown of the infection rate over Friday night, after a temporary fix around it, has now been overcome by a second variation the criminals have released.”

WASHINGTON – American democracy is “under assault” on separate fronts from President Donald Trump and Russia, the former U.S. intelligence chief warned Sunday, expressing dismay over the abrupt firing of FBI director James Comey amid a probe into Moscow’s meddling in U.S. elections and possible ties with the Trump campaign.

As Trump works to fast-track Comey’s successor, lawmakers from both parties urged him to steer clear of any politicians for the job and say he must “clean up the mess that he mostly created.”

“I think, in many ways, our institutions are under assault, both externally – and that’s the big news here, is the Russian interference in our election system,” said James Clapper, the former director of national intelligence. “I think as well our institutions are under assault internally.”

When he was asked, “Internally, from the president?” Clapper said, “Exactly.”

Clapper spoke after Trump’s sudden firing of Comey last week, which drew sharp criticism because it came amid the FBI’s investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election. Clapper said America’s founding fathers had created three co-equal branches of government with checks and balances, but with Trump as president, that was now “eroding.”

Garland never got a hearing due to Republican obstruction, and the high court vacancy was filled last month by Neil Gorsuch.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York said the new FBI director should be someone “not of partisan background” with “great experience” and “courage.” Declining comment on a Garland nomination, Schumer left open the possibility that Democrats might withdraw support for a new FBI director unless the Justice Department names a special prosecutor. Under Senate rules, Republicans could still confirm an FBI director with 51 votes. Republicans hold 52 seats in the chamber to Democrats’ 48.

It could be a special finish to year at boys track and field finals VIEWS Curt Herron

As we reach sectional week for boys track and field teams, I’d like to look back on some of the finest state performances by local athletes, in order to explain why 2017 could go down as one of our most memorable seasons ever in the sport.

I’ve compiled a list of some of the best individual all-around efforts by area athletes at the IHSA finals in the past half century. An athlete had to win one individual title and also place among the top half of the finalists in another individual event. Only 10 local athletes have done this in the large-school division, with one doing so twice.

The first to do it were Lincoln-Way’s Dave Merrick (two firsts, 1971), Joliet West’s Gary Woolford (first and third, 1972), Joliet East’s Tim Graf (first and fourth, 1976), Joliet West’s Steve Kelly (two firsts, 1988), Joliet West’s Terry Collins (first and third, 1990) and Bolingbrook’s Corey Day (two firsts, 1994).

Then, Lemont’s Nick Bromberek (three firsts and second, 2000), Bolingbrook’s Troy Doris (two firsts, 2007), Providence Catholic’s Andrew Helmin (first and second, 2013) and Plainfield Central’s Kahmari Montgomery (two firsts, 2014, and three firsts, 2015).

As you see, no more than one Joliet-area athlete has accomplished this feat in a given year. That could change, however, at this year’s finals in Charleston, which run from May 25 to 27.

We may have as many as three individuals from the area who could join this prestigious list of champions

for at least one event who also is a high placer in another.

According to Athletic.net, Minooka senior Soren Knudsen, Lockport junior John Meyer and Plainfield North freshman Marcellus Moore all own top times or distances in Class 3A in at least one event and rank among the top three in another.

Moore followed up on a great indoor season by claiming the top spots

in the 100 and 200 while competing April 8 at Belleville West. His 10.55second race in the 100 stood until last week, when he went 10.48 at the Southwest Prairie Conference meet.

His 21.28 in the 200 at Belleville still leads the state.

The freshman also is part of a 4x100 relay that went 41.98 at the SPC,

Slammers drop season-opening series at Lake Erie SUBMITTED REPORTS

AVON, Ohio – The Joliet Slammers bring a 1-2 record to Slammers Stadium for Tuesday night’s opener against Traverse City after dropping the rubber game of their season-opening series at Lake Erie, 6-3, on Sunday.

All tickets for the 7:05 p.m. home opener are $2 as part of the Slammers’ $2 Tuesday promotion, where all reserved seats start at $2.00.

That relay includes Jordan Gumila, Brian Registe and Carlos Baggett.

Despite enjoying great success in their brief history, the Tigers have not placed better than third in a relay or seventh in an individual event.

They hope to surpass both marks this year.

Meyer, the defending state champion in shot put, established himself as the one to beat when he went 65-2 at Minooka’s #SmithStrong invite on April 15.

He improved upon that with a 65-4 1/2 at the Jackson meet, where he beat second-ranked Ethan Hanson of Fremd (62-11).

Last week, he turned in what may be the all-time state record in the event with a 66-6 effort in the SouthWest Suburban Blue Conference meet. Lake Park’s Jermaine Kline won the 3A title in 2011 with a 66-53/4 toss, the best-ever at state.

The Porter standout placed ninth in discus as a freshman and figures to place much higher this season. After going 179-10 at Minooka, he had a 183-4 throw at the SWSC, which ranks third in Class 3A. Meyer is trying to become his

In the fall, Knudsen won the cross country championship to join his father, Jim, as a winner in that competition.

That made the pair the first father-son combo to ever pull off the feat. But now he’s hoping to do something that his dad wasn’t able to do, which was also win a track championship. Jim, a 1982 Lockport graduate, twice finished second in the 3,200.

Knudsen, who took third in the 1,600 at last year’s state meet, hopes to become his school’s first individual champion on the track in the largest division. The Indians have captured two relay titles, and Tom Clennon won both the 2-mile and 1-mile in Class A in 1977.

In the 3,200, Knudsen’s time of 8:55.7 from the Conant Invite on May 4 is the state’s best in that event, nearly four seconds ahead of Whitney Young’s Clayton Mendez. And his 4:13.53 in the 1,600 at the Prospect invite on April 28 currently ranks as third-best.

Of course, being the favorite doesn’t ensure anything.

But based on how these athletes have performed, I fully expect to see their best performances at Eastern Illinois University.

Truex finally wins at Kansas Speedway after late restart

The Associated Press KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Martin Truex Jr. finally ended his string of rotten luck at Kansas Speedway.

Danica Patrick was left to rue more bad luck of her own.

Truex pulled away from Ryan Blaney and Kevin Harvick on a late restart Saturday night, winning the NASCAR Cup Series race that he seemed to dominate every year without reaching victory lane.

“They’re all so special, honestly.

These races are so hard to win,” said Truex, who had a fluke tire change problem rob him of the win after leading 172 laps last year. “Any of those restarts I could have gotten beat on. You never know what’s going to happen.”

Brad Keselowski made a pass on the final lap to take second, followed

by Harvick and Blaney. Kyle Busch rounded out the top five after winning the Truck Series race Friday night.

“We were really good all day and just never had a chance to show it,” Keselowski said. “Every time we had a chance to pass cars and cycle up front, something happened, which was a real bummer.

“Toward the end we made some runs and made the most of it.”

The race was halted with 67 laps to go when a broken brake rotor turned Joey Logano’s car into Patrick, sending her hard into the fence in the first turn.

Aric Almirola had nowhere to go and

slammed into Logano, the force of the impact lifting his car into the air.

Logano and Patrick were treated and released from the infield care center, while Almirola was airlifted to the University of Kansas Medical Center.

He was conscious and alert.

“I hope Aric is OK. He’s definitely feeling the worst of everybody,” Patrick said. “NASCAR does everything it can to make it safe for everybody, but these things happen. One of these times, these accidents aren’t going to be good for me. They’re all big. I’ve been fortunate so far.”

When it comes to escaping accidents unharmed, that is. But Patrick has had very little fortune on the track, crashing out of the last four races and failing to finish five times this season.

“Just out of nowhere. Everything was fine, and then it took a hard one,” Logano said. “I hate that I’m the part of it that started it. I don’t know what I could have done.”

The race tied a track record with 15 cautions, and the last of them for a spin involving Jimmie Johnson bunched up the field with two laps to go. Truex dove to the bottom and roared from the rest of the field, ensuring there would be no more misfortune for him at Kansas.

It was Truex’s ninth career win and second this season. He also won at Las Vegas.

“I felt like if I could get out front on those restarts, I was OK,” Truex said.

“If I came out second or third, it took me a long time to get around guys.”

Blaney started from the pole and won his third stage of the year, leading the field across the line in his No. 21 Ford moments after Ryan Newman had an oil pump problem that forced him out.

Newman was running in the top 10 before his engine quit.

Johnson had all kinds of trouble during the stage. He was penalized for driving through too many pit boxes entering his own, then made contact with Kurt Busch that caused his tire to go down.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Four years after leading Lincoln-Way Central’s girls water polo team to a trip to the IHSA state finals, Dani Jackovich concluded her college career by helping second-ranked Stanford University to an 8-7 victory over top-ranked UCLA in Sunday’s NCAA finals.

The biomechanical engineering major entered the final match with 29 goals, which was fourth-best on the team. She had 106 during her Cardinal career and scored goals in 19 of her team’s games, with multiple goals in nine of those contests.

Stanford (23-3), which was playing in its record eighth-straight championship match, also captured titles in Jackovich’s first two years and now has won five of the past seven. Stanford and

UCLA now are tied for the all-time lead in NCAA titles in all sports with 113.

Really? Bears say no QB controversy BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush

LAKE FOREST – As Sgt. Schultz would exclaim at the climactic moment of every one of the 168 episodes of Hogan’s Heroes, this is going to be “vayree eenteristink!”

The Bears would like us to believe they do not have a quarterback controversy, just a lot of nice options at the position.

I would like to believe the same but ... .

Before I go there, since I have not written on the subject since the Bears made Mitch (it just feels and sounds better than Mitchell and I hope he’s not offended) Trubisky the second overall pick in the draft, here are my thoughts.

I have no problem with the Bears drafting a quarterback, Trubisky, in the first round after signing Mike Glennon in free agency.

The Bears have sucked at quarterback for too long and now have the best competition at the position they’ve had in most of our lifetimes.

If they have two good quarterbacks, that’s a great problem.

If Mike Glennon’s feelings are hurt, tough.

The fact is – we think – the job is his until he’s not good enough to keep it, and if Trubisky looking over his shoulder scares him what are J.J. Watt, Von Miller or Aaron Donald going to do to him?

I believe the trade up to get Trubisky was an unnecessary mistake that hurt the Bears throughout the draft and will hurt next year when they’re missing a third-round pick, and I felt Deshaun Watson was a better prospect than Trubisky.

But I know Ryan Pace is a better scout than I am, so I trust his choice of Trubisky, and I’m glad he is a Bear.

Now back to my dilemma, believing there is no quarterback controversy at Halas Hall.

We’re told the plan is for Glennon to play well and Trubisky to sit this year, but several coaches and players sounded like the folks in the White House trying to explain the James Comey firing when asked about it.

Queried how he would get Glennon and Trubisky to work well

together, coach John Fox said, “They’ve talked. They’ve gotten together.

“In this league you’re not one deep. There’s competition, there’s camaraderie, there’s brotherhood, teamwork, all of those things.”

Trubisky begged to differ a bit, however, when asked if he’d met Glennon.

“I haven’t been able to meet Mike or any of the quarterbacks yet,” he said. “But we’ve been texting. That’s the day and age. So I’m looking forward to meeting him.”

While not a big deal or even a problem necessarily, it does beg the question, are these guys on the same page or just making it up as they go?

That they haven’t yet actually spoken reflects very poorly on Glennon, a guy whose leadership skills we’ve heard rave reviews about.

Dowell Loggains also had an interesting answer when asked about developing both players.

“Well, I’m really excited about the challenge of it. It comes down to the biggest issue and you guys are very aware of it – the reps,” he said. “We have to be really smart with our plan and how we practice, because it’s not just one guy, it’s two guys and there’s Mark [Sanchez] and there’s Connor [Shaw].”

I’ve been doing this a long time and I’m not aware of any situation in the league where the starter – Glennon? – doesn’t get the bulk of the reps in training camp and almost all of them once the season starts.

When asked if he was really committed to Glennon or if things could turn out as they did last year after the Eagles indicated they didn’t expect Carson Wentz to play as a rookie, Fox said, “You know you can’t predict what’s going to happen week to week.

“I could say something but the reality is I can’t read the future, so we’re just going to compete every day and see where it falls.”

Am I reading too much into this or is Fox saying there is a competition for the quarterback job and Trubisky could be playing sooner than we think – and the Bears allegedly hope?

Somewhere, Sgt. Schultz must be smiling.

The game was played in front of 47,925 fans. For the second straight day, a Cubs-Cardinals game set an attendance record at the ballpark.

The Cubs and Arrieta keep insisting that the numbers will start trending in the right direction. Of Arrieta’s eight starts this season, only three have been quality starts.

Two years ago, Arrieta won the Cy Young Award with a 22-6 record and a 1.77 ERA. His second half was one for the history books.

Although he was not as dominant last year, Arrieta still managed an 18-8 record with a 3.10 ERA. In Sunday’s game, he worked six innings, giving up seven hits and four runs. Yadier Molina tagged him for a two-run homer in the second inning after Jedd Gyorko led off with a single.

Matt Carpenter added a two-run shot in the third.

Control wasn’t an issue, as Arrieta threw only 85 pitches while walking one and striking out five. But the Cubs still are waiting for Arrieta’s velocity to rise from the low-90s.

“It was actually pretty good,” Arrieta said of his day overall. “Probably some of the best stuff I’ve featured this year. Pretty good command. Just a couple of mistakes I made were capitalized on by those guys for a couple of two-run homers.”

It might seem like hoping against

hope, but manager Joe Maddon keeps sounding an optimistic note about Arrieta eventually looking like his old self.

“It would be great to have that occur,” Maddon said. “He’s shown flashes of that, I think, this year, also. I have so much faith and confidence in him and his methods and just him.

“You’re pretty aware that I don’t get caught up off the bandwagon very easily. I really believe he’s going to be fine.

I believe it’s going to be almost like a snap of the fingers, everything’s going to fall back into place, and you’re going to see this slow method of better, better, better, great.”

Maddon agreed with his pitcher about Sunday.

“I thought Jake was outstanding,” he said. “I thought he had his best stuff all year. They hit two home runs. Give them credit for that. But otherwise, the swings and misses, the pitches in the

zones, the takes on their part, I thought he was outstanding.”

A return to 2015 form is almost too much to ask for, and Maddon knows that.

“I think all of a sudden you’re going to see something’s going to click and he’s going to be back close to where he had been,” Maddon said. “It’s hard to be where he had been when he won the (Cy Young) award. I’m not expecting that, but more like we had seen last year, more consistency in the velocity.”

On the offensive side of the ball Sunday, the Cubs were manhandled by veteran Adam Wainwright, who pitched seven innings of four-hit ball.

“We’d like to win a few more games and tighten things up a little bit, but guys are showing up ready to play and going about themselves the right way,” Arrieta said. “We’re just not necessarily getting the results we’d like.”

CHICAGO – You don’t always have to hit it far to hit it effectively in baseball.

But you do always have to keep your head in the game.

An eight-run eighth inning by the White Sox Sunday proved that, with the biggest “hit” in the 9-3 victory over San Diego arguably a pop-up out to first that scored Todd Frazier from third.

The reason Frazier scored? Padres first baseman Will Myers turned his back on Frazier.

“It was just one of those things,” said Frazier, who had reached on a walk with the bases loaded, driving in the first run of the frame. ‘‘You read what’s going on and take a chance.

“I was just thinking his back was turned, and he threw the ball [home] high enough. It worked out perfectly.’’

And it led to a perfect ending for the Sox, who came back from a 3-1 deficit to take the interleague series – their first series win since April 28-30 against Detroit. ‘‘We’ll take a win any way we can,” Frazier said of the second consecutive comeback.

Renteria is just as confident in his left-hander.

“He doesn’t let anything that happens in the past and let it affect him in terms of results,” Renteria said. “I think his idea, his preparation and his feel for wanting to get after the hitters in terms of his plan, his mindset, is very even keel.

“I think you see the same guy every single day. When he goes out there, even if the results aren’t what you expect, he still goes out there and commands a presence on the mound.”

Si Woo Kim becomes youngest winner of Players Championship The ASSOCIATED PRESS

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Si Woo Kim made Sunday at The Players Championship look like child’s play.

From a tough lie behind the green, in a bunker with not much room between him and the pin, or even standing on the 17th tee and staring at an island, the 21-year-old South Korean never flinched and never made worse than par.

Kim kept a clean card to the end for a 3-under 69 to become the youngest champion in the 44-year history of the biggest tournament this side of the majors.

“I feel like I’m still dreaming that I won this championship,” Kim said after his three-stroke victory.

On a windy afternoon at the TPC Sawgrass, where anything can go wrong without notice, Kim was the only player to go bogey-free in the final round that derailed everyone else in a hopeless pursuit of him.

His last hurdle was getting by the final two holes where not even his twoshot lead was safe – the island green at the par-3 17th and a closing hole with water all the way down the left side.

“I wasn’t nervous at all because I was leading,” he said. “I just focused on the middle of the green.”

He landed safely and two-putted from 45 feet, and then smashed another drive down the middle of the 18th fairway.

The only drama at the end came from Ian Poulter, who was happy just to be here.

Two weeks ago, Poulter thought he had lost his PGA Tour card until officials realized a clerical oversight that restored his status and even gave him a spot in The Players Championship.

He was the only player to seriously challenge Kim until he ran out of holes, and then it was a matter of finishing second.

Ducks 5, Predators 3: At Anaheim, California, Nick Ritchie scored the tiebreaking goal late in the second period, and the Anaheim Ducks roared back from an early two-goal deficit to even the Western Conference finals with a victory over the Nashville Predators.

Jakob Silfverberg, Sami Vatanen and Ondrej Kase also scored while the Ducks cracked imposing goalie Pekka Rinne with a thrilling surge of four goals in less than 19 minutes.

The Predators hadn’t allowed four goals in any game during their excellent Stanley Cup playoff run before Anaheim finally got rolling for its sellout crowd.

John Gibson stopped 30 shots, and Antoine Vermette had an empty-net goal for the Ducks.

Ryan Johansen, James Neal and Filip Forsberg scored for the Predators Game 3 is Tuesday night in Nashville.

Rinne made 22 saves for the Predators, who faced relatively little adversity while steamrolling the Blackhawks and St. Louis in the first two rounds on the way to the first conference finals in franchise history.

26 Understanding risk factors for macular degeneration Dear Doctor: I was recently diagnosed with wet macular degeneration and am now receiving periodic injections for the disease. What causes it? Are there any risk factors, such as drugs or diet?

Dear Reader: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of adult blindness in industrialized countries. AMD causes damage to the central portion of the retina, leading to a loss of central (foveal) vision. Central vision is necessary to see those details that allow people to read, drive, watch TV and perform many of the activities of daily living.

There are two types of AMD, a dry type and a wet type. Each causes a change in the retina, which consists of layers of cells in the back of your eye. For those who remember using a camera with film, the retina is like the film upon which images are exposed.

Dry AMD is much more common than wet AMD, constituting 85 to 90 percent of all cases. There has been no single cause established for dry AMD, which occurs when a mixture of protein and fat (called drusen) builds up behind the retinal layers. Dry AMD leads to a slow progression of vision loss over many years. People with dry AMD in both eyes have a 1 to 4.7 percent yearly risk of developing wet AMD. As for wet AMD, it’s caused by the growth of abnormal blood vessels behind the retina.

These blood vessels leak, causing both fluid and blood to pool behind the retina. I regret to say without treatment, the prognosis is not good. The condition can lead to rapid vision loss, causing blindness within months or weeks. While wet AMD accounts for only 10 to 15 percent of all cases, it accounts for 80 percent of the blindness caused by AMD. The biggest risk factor for both types of AMD is age, with people ages 55 to 64 having a 0.2 percent risk of developing the condition, and those older than 84 having a 13.1 percent risk. ASK THE DOCTORS Robert Ashley increases the risk of developing AMD by a factor of two to four, and the risk persists many years after stopping smoking. It also causes the degeneration to progress faster.

Other risk factors: Having a family history of early-onset or severe AMD and having had a previous stroke or heart attack. There may be an association between AMD and aspirin or blood pressure medications (especially beta-blockers and nitroglycerin), but as of now no causality has been defined.

Heavy alcohol consumption (more than three drinks a day) has been associated with early-onset AMD, but not with late-onset.

In regards to diet, one study followed the dietary habits of 2,525 patients with age-related eye disease. Those who adhered to a Mediterranean diet had a 26 percent reduced risk of developing advanced, severe macular degeneration. Mediterranean diets are high in nuts, fish, vegetables, fruits and whole grains and low in red meat, processed meats and saturated fats.

Antioxidant combinations that include vitamin C and vitamin E, as well as supplements of lutein with zinc, also have been linked to a decreased risk in progression of AMD. So it is possible that deficiencies in these substances may increase your risk.

People who want to decrease their risk factors for AMD should stop, or not start, smoking; they should avoid heavy alcohol use; and if their diet is high in saturated fat, they should consider switching to a Mediterranean diet.

Dear Abby: I am a 34-year-old single mother (by choice) of a beautiful 3-year-old boy. Because of infertility problems, it took years for me to conceive. I love my son beyond measure and, when I’m not working, I’m usually shuttling him to extracurricular activities and making time after cooking and cleaning to play with him.

Because my world revolves around being a mom, I have a hard time participating in adult conversations without talking about my son and how proud and happy I am to be his mom.

I realize this can be irritating to others, and it has become frustrating for me.

Following West’s excellent lead, East’s demon defense stopped South from discarding a heart loser on dummy’s second high club.

Once declarer sees the 4-1 spade break, he should realize that he needs West to hold the diamond king. After taking trick four in his hand, South should cash the diamond ace and run the diamond queen.

When that wins, he continues with another diamond, ruffing out West’s king. Then declarer can draw trumps ending in his hand and claim.

Of Hot mix asphalt surface removal; 348 sq yds. Class D Patches; 333 each Structures to be Adjusted; 4,699 ln ft Pavement Marking.

Bids will be received at the Office of the City Clerk, City of Joliet Municipal Building, 150 West Jefferson Street, Joliet, Illinois 604324156 until 9:00 A.M. local time on Friday, May 26, 2017 at which time they will be opened and publicly read aloud.

Those desiring to bid may examine the bid documents and detailed specifications in the City of Joliet Purchasing Division, 150 W. Jefferson St., Joliet, IL 60432 between the hours of 8:00 A.M. and 4:30 P.M., Monday through Friday. Electronic copies can be downloaded free of charge at http://www.cityofjoliet.info/bids-proposals.

All Bidding Document holders should sign up for RSS feeds at http://cityofjoliet.info/departments/finance/purchasing/bids-proposals/ construction-public-works and provide your first and last name and email address to automatically receive addendums.

Addendums will also be posted on the City of Joliet's website at http://www.cityofjoliet.info/bids-proposals. The potential vendor/ contractor remains responsible for obtaining all addenda to the original specification so they should check the specific bid page before submitting a bid to make sure they have received all addendums to a specific contract.

All bidders will be required to submit Bid Security in the form of a Certified Check, Cashier's Check or a Bid Bond in the amount of FIVE percent (5%) of the Base Bid, payable to the City of Joliet.

The City of Joliet's local qualified bidder ordinance does not apply to this contract.

The successful bidder will be required to post performance security and to provide a Certificate of Insurance as set forth in the Invitation of Bid and the General Terms & Conditions.

Bidders are required to be pre-qualified through the Illinois Department of Transportation. It is the responsibility of the bidder to ensure that their pre-qualification information is provided to the City of Joliet Purchasing Division prior to the bid opening. The City of Joliet reserves the right to reject any and all bids, parts of any and all bids, or to waive technical errors or omissions in bids.

The Contract shall be subject to the provisions of the Prevailing Wage Act (820 ILCS 130/1 et seq.) to the extent required by law and the City of Joliet Procurement Code (Section 2-430 - 2-453 of the Code of Ordinances).
