Auto camp – Aurora By the early 1920s, road improvements and highly publicized expeditions along Lincoln Highway generated enough interest that Americans felt more confident about taking up the adventure of cross-country motor travel.

Travelers who could afford to pay for comfort would welcome the excellent accommodations found in many local hotels. Those motorists on a budget or eager for adventure found “motor hoboing,” or camping along the route, a more appealing alternative.

By the mid-1920s, municipal organizations across the country established auto camps in order to prevent motor tourists from “squatting” in areas that they were not welcome.

In the early years of Lincoln Highway, the open space that bordered the road on the outskirts of town or certain city parks became attractive venues for adventurers to set up temporary sleeping accommodations.

For the motorist, veering off the road and coasting to the nearest clearing provided the traveler with certain outdoor natural amenities that could not be found in a traditional hotel.

The surge in popularity of municipal camps soon was followed with manufacturers who saw the great potential for sales in travel gadgets that were geared to the automobile enthusiast.

For instance, the Tentobed Co. manufactured special rigging that allowed the owner to sleep inside the automobile.

Another common product available was an auto tent and bed kit that was usually carried on the running board. The L. F. Schilling Co. sold a tent kit that attached to the automobile for support.

As free municipal auto camps grew in popularity, they soon became overcrowded, and communities had trouble keeping them maintained.

It was not long before the urge to compete with other towns and their auto camps that expensive improvements were made, and there was a growing pressure to levy a charge for the use of the facilities.

OLD POSTCARD IMAGES SOUGHT FOR PUBLICATION David Belden is a history teacher at Minooka Community High School and currently is publishing local postcard books with Arcadia Publishing in his Local History classes. He and his students are looking for old Joliet photos and postcards, and images from Joliet’s parks, for a new publication.

By the close of the 1920s, auto camps improved and offered private cabins that provided travelers with all the comforts of home, including a bed, electricity, heating, and, if lucky, a kitchenette.

These auto camps soon were known as motor courts, and their cabins were arranged in a row parallel or perpendicular to the highway, often in a U or L shape variety, with a central courtyard in the front.

After establishing the auto camp, the Aurora Automobile Club constructed the Aurora Lincoln Highway Shelter in Phillips Park to provide the highway motorists with certain amenities a tired traveler might need on the road.

The shelter fell into disrepair by the late 1940s and faced demolition by the late 1990s. To help save the historic structure, the Aurora Preservation Commission raised money to restore the structure to its original 1924 appearance.

Crowd grows in 23rd year of Manhattan Irish Fest

mmallory@shawmedia.com MANHATTAN – The village of Manhattan was founded by Irish and German immigrants in the mid-1800s.

Over the years, the small village has maintained a strong Irish population. And each March, people gather from throughout the area, and the greater Midwest, to celebrate Irish heritage.

This weekend was the 23rd annual Manhattan Irish Fest. And it might have had the biggest crowd yet.

“Our attendance was up 50 percent last night over the previous year,” event planning committee chairman Pete Hegarty said Saturday.

In fact, attendance has jumped considerably the past couple of years.

Hegarty said there might have been 7,000 people in town for the event Saturday.

The 40-degree temperatures and sunlight certainly helped.

“We’ve had years with a foot of snow, so we’ll take it,” Hegarty said.

Friday night was a 21-and-older crowd, while Saturday was an all-day event aimed at family fun.

The morning started off with an Irish breakfast and an Irish Mass at St. Joseph’s Church.

A 5K kicked off outdoor activities at 11 a.m. Saturday as runners headed through the downtown area, followed by a parade.

Metra shut down the train tracks that run through downtown so the parade could take place. Union electricians drove trucks down the parade route honking horns that kept eager kids at a safe distance.

After the parade, a street sweeper swept up and down State Street, gathering up what trash had been left behind and clearing the way for regular traffic to resume.

Then, the crowds that were gathered for the parade dispersed to different areas. A mostly adult crowd took a few steps south to a village-owned lot that housed the entertainment tent.

“The village of Manhattan has been extremely helpful,” Hegarty said.

It’s the second year the entertainment tent was in that location, behind Manhattan Firehouse Grill. It’s been a great success, Hegarty said, allowing attendees to celebrate without

Last year, however, people crowded at one entrance, so they added a second entrance to the tent this year, which seemed to help congestion – as long as people knew about the other entrance.

“There’s another entrance down that way, with no line,” Hegarty and staff were heard yelling to the crowds.

Inside the tent, the sounds of Emerald Society Pipes drew cheers that could be heard down the block. The group, comprised of members of the Chicago Police Department, started off the entertainment at noon Saturday. They were followed later in the day by Irish dance acts and bands such as Reilly and crowd favorite Fin-

bar McCarthy.

Meanwhile, parents with younger kids headed primarily to two different locations. A few blocks south on State Street, the Manhattan Park District had a variety of games and activities for kids at the district’s recreation center.

A block north of there, at the Manhattan-Elwood Public Library, kids took part in an indoor mini golf course assembled throughout the stacks. The nine-hole course featured various themes, and books with green covers or Irish subject matter were on display.

Organized by Friends of the Manhattan-Elwood Library, a staffer said the golf course displays are a team effort by library staff.

Most anyone passing through town would notice from the street that an Irish event was taking place. Sports fans wore Notre Dame Fighting Irish gear and green St. Patrick’s Day Chicago Blackhawks jerseys to show off their Irish pride. Others donned authentic kilts or wool hats, and navy and green outfits.

Hegarty said the festival planning starts in November. The committee that puts on the fest is completely made up of volunteer crews.

It has been organized by a few different groups over the years, including the Manhattan Park District.

In its 23 years of existence, Manhattan Irish Fest has donated more than $230,000 in profits to many different organizations.

Bill Bolker developed family-friendly communities

NEW LENOX – A successful businessman. A true family man. A big community supporter.

So said Jack Kramer, president of the First Bank of Manhattan, about William “Bill” Bolker of New Lenox, who died Feb. 25 at age 75. Born and raised in New Lenox, Bill, through the various companies he owned, developed many of New Lenox’s subdivisions, including Country Creek.

But Bill was most proud of his children and grandchildren and often spoke of their accomplishments, Jack said.

“I think he was also very proud of the projects he developed and the homes that he built,” Jack said. “He also donated his time and financial resources to a number of projects.

The most prominent one is the community center in the commons near Village Hall in New Lenox. I think, like so many successful people, he came from fairly modest means and built quite a company on his own initiative.”

“Modest means” is an understatement. Bill’s daughter, Bev Judge of New Lenox, said her father was born and raised in a 950-square-foot house on Vine Street with his parents and his two brothers.

“They had no indoor plumbing and an outhouse out back,” Bev said.

“They were very, very poor. So poor that, at times, his family could not care for him, and neighbors took him in and raised him. He grew up with one pair of jeans and nothing for Christmas. He had holes in his jeans and holes in his shoes. ... The year he graduated from high school – 1956 – he built a house for his parents.”

At age 20, Bill started building houses in earnest. In 1960, he enlisted in the U.S. Marines. While serving, Bill became friends with a man who later introduced Bill to Claudia, whom Bill eventually married.

Bev said Bill was a wonderful father to his three daughters and very involved in their care, which wasn’t the norm in the 1960s.

“We don’t remember him ever responding in anger or yelling at us,” Bev said. “He was just very kind, but we respected him and set out to please him.”

But Bill was more than a devoted husband, father and entrepreneur.

He was, Bev said, “a visionary” who helped to shape New Lenox, and his

resume proves it.

In addition to building 110 custom homes in the Will County area, Bill also built the Towncrest Drive apartments and town homes and the 17,500-square-foot shopping center at Cedar and Francis roads.

He also built the former Lincoln-Way Electronics and the former Maryland Fried Chicken on Route 30 in New Lenox, as well as the 23,500-square-foot Country Lanes Bowling Center on Laraway Road, now known as Laraway Lanes.

And that’s merely a partial list.

“He just truly loved construction and developing communities where people could raise their families with beautiful parks,” Bev said. “He had a high level of excellence in everything he did.”

With that in mind, Bill and Claudia also built and donated New Lenox’s Performing Arts Pavilion in 2004 as a gift to the village, a gathering place for Fourth of July fireworks, concerts and other events, Bev said.

Even now, Bev said, any home her father built never lasts long on the market. That includes the 20-year-old town homes.

“People wait for the units to come up for sale because he was known for his quality,” Bev said.

Roy Koerner of Florida said he funded many of Bill’s construction loans when Roy was assistant vice president of residential lending at the former Joliet Federal Savings and Loan.

In addition to his New Lenox projects, Roy said Bill also built duplexes in Elwood and Frankfort. Roy echoed Bev when he said Bill was known for his quality work.

“He was honest,” Roy said, “and he developed a good product.”

Roy moved to Indiana in 1996, in contrast to Jack, who had the opportunity to know Bill on a personal and professional level for many decades.

“I think what strikes me when I think about it is how long that relationship went on,” Jack said. “I was a young guy at the bank when I first started working with Bill, and those years just kind of flew by. ...We valued the opportunity to have that kind of relationship.”

Plenty of important habitats at Lockport Prairie Nature Preserve

I get offended when my Wisconsin relatives refer to me as a flatlander. We have so many wondrous rivers, trails and animal ecosystems in Illinois; I get frustrated trying to explain that Illinois is more than the flat land of farm fields.

For instance, the ongoing project at the Lockport Prairie Nature Preserve with the federally endangered Hine’s emerald dragonfly, a project to protect several federal and state endangered species.

What makes the preserve in Lockport so distinct is the dolomite rock, which allows water to pool and crayfish to burrow in the holes. Inside the holes are where the Hine’s emerald dragonfly lay their eggs. When they hatch, the little nymphs live for up to five years in the pooled water, shedding and growing. Once they mature, the adult dragonfly only lives four to five weeks.

I find it fascinating, so I had a conference call with Ralph Schultz, chief operating officer of the Forest Preserve District of Will County; Julie Mason,

The Lockport preserve is one of a limited number of places where this dragonfly reproduces and lives. There’s another in Door County, Wisconsin, and there also are places in Missouri and Michigan.

Another endangered species at the prairie is the Leafy Prairie Clover.

They, too, like the dolomite rock and grow in soil where the rock is just beneath.

There are two types of endangered turtles there as well; Blanding’s turtle and the spotted turtle both roam the preserve.

DeGroot said she tried the spicy chicken and the blueberry cheesecake.

“I liked the blueberry cheesecake the best,” DeGroot said.

Ferrara, who brought members of JJC’s Epicurean Club, as well as students from his Vocational Skills Food Service classes, said he can’t imagine not coordinating this event.

“It’s like watching your children grow,” Ferrara said.

Two of the Epicurean Club members, Crystal Gallardo and Julian Campos, served chiffon cake soaked in a moonshine simple syrup.

“It’s cake with a kick,” Gallardo said with a smile.

Quite a few guests also donned 1920s garb, including Rochelle Prospero of Mokena, an itinerant teacher at CDS for 22 years, who works with visually impaired clients. Prospero said she can’t walk into the center without feeling blessed.

“These kids have such spirit,” Prospero said.

Lorin Lynch of New Lenox , who said he attends every year, wore “regular” clothes, but his significant other, Lynne Lichtenauer, one of the event’s emcees, looked as if she stepped out of the era, which caught Lynch by surprise when

The main reasons for the endangerment of many species are the destruction of habitat, pesticide use that contaminates groundwater and wetlands that they need to survive.

Each year, the forest preserve district does a controlled burn of a portion of the preserve to eliminate invasive plant species that could threaten the endangered ones. Only one area is done at a time to allow creatures such as the turtles and dragonfly to be safe.

The endangered plants, such as the clover, have deep root systems

and will re-grow. Invasive plants that found their way to the preserve have a shallow root system that will die off.

The forest preserve district is working on a large grant that could fund preservation efforts of the groundwater resources. If the grant comes through, the project will be ongoing for about five years.

While walking and hiking in the Lockport preserve is limited, it’s just one of many in our area that either protect endangered species or provide a myriad of places for outdoor activities and learning experiences.

Some upcoming programs include walks to see the extraordinary court-

ship of the American male woodcock at Hickory Creek Preserve in Mokena and Plum Creek Nature Center in Beecher and the “Living With Wildlife” program at the Isle a la Cache Museum in Romeoville, where you will get information on living close to animals such as coyotes, rabbits and skunks, which roam our diverse area.

According to the Center for Disability Services website, the center was founded as a school in 1955 for children with cerebral palsy. Formerly known as United Cerebral Palsy of Illinois Prairieland, the CDS has since expanded its programs to also serve individuals with other disabilities, including epilepsy, traumatic brain injury and autism.

JOLIET – Vince Portlock was on the hunt for this year’s “big wow” dish, something even better than Kung Pao octopus.

This year, Portlock, board chair for the Center for Disability Services in Joliet, had a hard time choosing just one at Sunday’s 22nd Annual Great Chefs Tasting Party & Auction.

The event, held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., included samplings from 18 Joliet-area chefs and restaurants, as well as entertainment and a live and silent auction.

The coordinator is Joliet Junior College chef Fred Ferrara, who began the event 22 years ago and returns every year to run it.

Of course, with a “Roaring 20s” theme, the main auction item was “the vault.” This, said Gina Wysocki, director of development for CDS, was a nod to the concrete vault reputedly built by Al Capone in the Prohibition era.

“We filled this vault with items pertinent to the 1920s and the Chicago area,” Wysocki said.

Larry Burich, interim CEO, said last year’s Great Chefs Tasting Party & Auction raised about $90,000 for CDS, and he hoped this year would be closer to $100,000. One possible allocation for some of the proceeds would be toward the purchase of additional TAPits (Touch Accessible Platform for Interactive Technology).

“TAPits are computers we use in the classroom,” said Burich, who attended the event dressed as a gangster. “They

Preceded in death by her husband, Frank Chellino (2005); her parents, Tony and Patronella Sedaikis. A son, Frank Chellino (2016); two brothers, Alfred and August Sedaikis. Her sister, Susan Paplowskas.

Granddaughter, Kelly Ann Stefanich; and twin great-grandsons.

Born February 7, 1922, and was a lifelong Joliet resident. Constance retired from Presence St. Joseph Medical Center after 15 years of service. Former mailroom supervisor with the American Institute of Laundry.

Constance greatest joy in life was her family and grandchildren. She enjoyed playing

the penny slot machine at the Hollywood Casino.

Born on October 28, 1932, to the late Anthony and Marie (nee Fonck) Borio. Marilyn was a lifelong Joliet area resident. A graduate of St. Francis Academy in 1950 and St. John the Baptist Catholic grade school. Marilyn married David J. Gregory Sr. on July 21, 1951, and together raised 8 sons. Her life’s focus was her family, her faith, and her community. Her deep faith and love of music could be found in her participation in the Diocesan Choir, St. John the Baptist Choir, the Resurrection Choir as well as the church worship commission. She was also a volunteer at the food pantry located at St. John’s. Marilyn loved spending time with her family and friends, taking many trips. She loved

her cats and was called, “Grandma Cat” by her grandchildren.

SPRINGFIELD – A proposal to expand casino gambling in Illinois would put new casinos in six locations, raising revenue for a cash-strapped state that’s been without a spending plan for two years.

The massive gambling expansion is part the wide-ranging “grand bargain” to end Illinois’ two-year deadlock over an annual spending plan. Although the grand bargain was derailed this past week, the casinos plan did get the endorsement of the Senate. The measure is in the mix to raise revenue and draw votes from areas of the state that could cash in on what has been a lucrative industry for a quarter-century.

Despite Senate approval, the gambling legislation can’t move forward unless accompanied by the dozen or so other bills in the grand bargain. The overall spending deal is on hold after Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner voiced opposition to remaining parts of the plan.

Trump seeks Congress’ help on wiretap claim

PALM BEACH, Fla. – President Donald Trump turned to Congress on Sunday for help finding evidence to support his unsubstantiated claim that former President Barack Obama had Trump’s telephones tapped during the election.

Obama’s intelligence chief said no such action was ever carried out, and a U.S. official said the FBI has asked the Justice Department to dispute the allegation.

Republican leaders of Congress appeared willing to honor the president’s request, but the move has potential risks for the president, particularly if the House and Senate intelligence committees unearth damaging information about Trump, his aides or his associates.

Trump claimed in a series of tweets without evidence Saturday that his predecessor had tried to undermine him by tapping the telephones at Trump Tower, the New York skyscraper where Trump based his campaign and transition operations, and maintains a home.

Obama’s director of national intelligence, James Clapper, said nothing matching Trump’s claims had taken place.

“Absolutely, I can deny it,” said Clapper, who left government when Trump took office in January. Other representatives for the former president also denied Trump’s allegation.

The FBI has asked the Justice Department to dispute Trump’s allegations, a U.S. official told The Associated Press on Sunday. The official wasn’t authorized to discuss the request by name and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

No such statement has been issued by the Justice Department. DOJ spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores declined to comment Sunday, and an FBI spokesman also did not com-

The New York Times reported that senior American officials say FBI Director James Comey has argued that the claim must be corrected by the Justice Department because it falsely insinuates that the FBI broke the law.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said without elaborating Sunday that Trump’s instruction to Congress was based on “very troubling” reports “concerning potentially politically motivated investigations immediately ahead of the 2016 election.” Spicer did not respond to inquiries about the reports he cited in announcing the request.

Spicer said the White House wants the congressional committees to “exercise their oversight authority to determine whether executive branch investigative powers were abused in 2016.” He said there would be no further comment until the investigations are completed, a statement that House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi took offense to and likened to autocratic behavior.

Josh Earnest, who was Obama’s press secretary, said presidents do not have authority to unilaterally order the wiretapping of American citizens, as Trump has alleged was done to him. FBI investigators and Justice Department officials must seek a federal judge’s approval for such a step.

Earnest accused Trump of leveling the allegations to distract from the attention being given to campaign-season contacts by Trump aides with a Russian official, including campaign adviser Jeff Sessions before he resigned from the Senate to become attorney general. The FBI is investigating those contacts, as is Congress.

Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr, R-N.C., said in a statement that the panel “will follow the evidence where it leads, and we will continue to be guided by the intelligence and facts as we compile our findings.”

As Koskinen put it: “If you’re a taxpayer, you don’t want to roll the roulette wheel and have the little white ball land on your number because then we’re not very happy.”

Most people don’t have much of an opportunity to cheat on their taxes because the IRS collects a lot of information to verify taxpayers’ finances.

Employers report wages, banks report interest, brokerages report capital gains and lenders report mortgage interest.

In 2016, the number of people audited by the IRS dropped by 16 percent from the year before. Just 0.7 percent of individuals were audited, either in person

or by mail. That’s the lowest audit rate since 2003.

The higher your income, the more likely you are to be audited. The IRS audited 1.7 percent of returns that reported more than $200,000 in income. Agents audited 5.8 percent of returns that reported more than $1 million in income.

Both audit rates were steep declines from the year before.

The most well-known audit in Washington is one on President Donald Trump, who has cited it in refusing to release his tax returns. The IRS, however, has said an audit would not prevent an individual from releasing the returns.

Corporate audits were down by 17 percent last year. Just 0.49 percent of corporations were audited, the lowest rate in at least a decade.

Republicans in Congress began cutting money at the IRS after they took control of both the House and Senate in the 2010 elections. They became more enthusiastic about the spending cuts after it became public that the agency had improperly singled out conservative political groups for extra scrutiny when they applied for tax-exempt status during the 2010 and 2012 elections.

Koskinen was not at the IRS when

the political groups were mistreated, but some Republicans in Congress have been unhappy with his cooperation in their investigations.

When asked about IRS money, many Republican lawmakers inevitably mention the mistreatment of conservative groups.

“Go look at all the areas where they’ve wasted money, mismanaged taxpayer resources,” said Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio. “Not to mention the fact that, you know, one of the reasons we went after them so hard is they did target people for their political views.”

Democrats argue that it’s a costly move.

“You know, when somebody doesn’t pay, that means that others pay more,” said Rep. Richard Neal of Massachusetts, the top Democrat on tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee.

“But I think there’s no question that the majority [Republicans] here and apparently the president, they have had a target on the IRS.” Tony Reardon, president of the National Treasury Employees Union, which represents IRS workers, questioned Trump’s proposal to increase military spending by billions while the GOP targets the IRS.

Selma re-enacts civil rights movement march The ASSOCIATED PRESS SELMA, Ala. – Throngs of people converged in the city of Selma, Alabama, for the annual re-enactment of a key event in the civil rights movement.

Sunday marks the 52nd anniversary of the march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge over the Alabama River in Selma.

On March 7, 1965, African-Americans seeking voting rights launched a march across the bridge en route to Montgomery but were attacked by police. That violent episode became known as “Bloody Sunday.”

The march is credited with helping build momentum for passage of the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965. Attendees included the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Congresswoman Terri Sewell, Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill and North Carolina NAACP President Dr. William Barber.

WFSA-TV reported that a number of Selma church services kicked off Bridge Crossing Jubilee events including at the historic Brown Chapel where speakers remembered the battle for African American voting rights and the role the Chapel played in that fight.

“We want to make sure that every eligible U.S. citizen that is a resident of Alabama is registered to vote and has a photo ID so they can participate in the

electoral process at they level that they want to participate,” Merrill said.

Multiple spectators called out in opposition several times of having a photo ID including in the voting process. Many walked out of the church service while Merrill was still talking including NAACP president Barber, according to WFSA.

“Standing on this historic ground, where people died for voting rights, we cannot accept this hypocrisy of voter suppression,” Barber said.

The service continued, despite the moments of tension, with Congresswoman Sewell calling for unity and activism and other leaders asking for respect and peace.

This year’s march re-enactment was planned despite a dispute over city fees that forced organizers to change plans for a festival-like event leading up to the bridge-crossing commemoration.

The city asked for thousands of dollars to cover the costs of police, fire and cleanup workers, but Sen. Hank Sanders, D-Selma, and other leaders of the event refused to pay.

Instead, they moved a music festival to private property rather than holding it on a blocked city street as in past years.

Organizers of an annual Civil War re-enactment held in Selma canceled their event when presented with a similar bill from the city.

This year’s crowd for the bridge crossing was expected to be far smaller than the one in 2015, when then-President Barack Obama and his family led tens of thousands of marchers on the 50th anniversary weekend.

WASHINGTON – As millions of Americans file their income tax returns, their chances of getting audited by the IRS have rarely been so low.

The number of people audited by the IRS in 2016 year dropped for the sixth straight year, to just over 1 million. The last time so few people were audited was 2004. Since then, the U.S. has added about 30 million people.

The IRS blames budget cuts as money for the agency shrunk from $12.2 billion in 2010 to $11.2 billion last year.

Over that period, the agency has lost more than 17,000 employees, including nearly 7,000 enforcement agents. A little more than 80,000 people work at the IRS. IRS Commissioner John Koskinen said budget cuts are costing the federal government between $4 billion and $8 billion a year in uncollected taxes.

“We are the only agency if you give us more people and money, we give you more money back,” Koskinen said in an interview.

So is it safe to cheat on your taxes?

Not necessarily, according to tax experts.

For a second consecutive season, Joliet West will face Joliet Central in a Class 4A sectional semifinal.

For a second consecutive season, the two Joliet Township schools have an opportunity to win the local sectional.

Of course, one-loss Bolingbrook, the No. 1 sectional seed and the No. 1-ranked team in the state much of the latter portion of the season, will have something to say about that in the Lincoln-Way East Sectional championship game, assuming the Raiders beat West Aurora in the other semifinal.

Still, this has been a season where any imaginable superlative should be flung in the direction of Joliet West (25-3) and Joliet Central (23-5).

“Two Joliet teams doing what they are doing, it has been an amazing year in Joliet,” West senior guard/forward Trevian Bell said Friday night, moments after the Tigers put the finishing touches on a 72-44 victory over Romeoville in the championship game of the Plainfield Central Regional. “How both of our teams have handled things couldn’t have been better.”

Players at West and Central know and respect each other. That doesn’t mean beating the crosstown rival is not the most important thing in their world. It certainly will be in Wednesday’s semifinal beginning with the

Not that anything was needed to cement the relationship between the two programs, but how about Lawrence Thompson Jr., who was sitting on the Tigers’ bench as an assistant for Nick DiForti last season, now running things at Joliet Central.

“It will be a good one with Central,” West senior center Tabyous Casterberry said. “We know we have to execute if we’re going to beat them. Coach Thompson has got them

playing good basketball.”

Bell, however, also noted that the Steelmen being the opponent does not change the approach the Tigers will take.

“We have four seniors whose one goal is the state championship,” Bell said, referring to himself, Casterberry, Teyvion Kirk and Elijah Ward. “We are coming out playing every game like it’s our last, and we want to make sure it’s not. We look at playing Central as another

road block in what we are trying to accomplish, like tonight was against Romeoville.”

West has been the higher ranked of the Joliet schools all season. Ever since the Tigers suffered a supersectional loss to Benet last season, the pundits had them pegged as a state contender for this season. Did that add pressure to this talented group of kids? Bell said it did not.

USF’s Osusky feels kinship with Anderson

dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Anybody who has watched the University of St. Francis men’s basketball team over the past couple of seasons had to come away with admiration for Landus Anderson.

A senior whose USF career ended when the Saints were ousted from the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament, Anderson was a defensive specialist, often drawing the assignment from coach Ryan Marks of guarding the opponent’s best offensive player.

He is quick and athletic. He rebounds. The cliché of a player being able to jump out of the gym could have been created with him in mind.

He also could score his share of points and is a good 3-point shooter.

While all of those traits could describe many good college basketball players, how many accomplish all of that basically with one arm? Anderson was born with Erb’s palsy, and his right arm could not be used for most functions on the basketball floor. Still, he contributed in so many ways.

It might not be as noticeable, but the St. Francis women have a starting guard in senior Angelica Osusky, a Romeoville graduate, who is playing without an original part. She lost her left thumb after being attacked by a dog when she was 8 years old.

She watched Anderson play often and never ceased to be amazed, while also feeling a kinship.

“It is awesome what Landus does with one arm,” Osusky said after practice last Thursday as the Saints prepared for the NAIA Division II National

Central, in contrast, had been flying under the radar. The Steelmen were pegged as a solid, competitive team, but with a new coach and in the shadow of their crosstown rival.

The Steelmen lost a game early – to Minooka on a buzzer-beater in the championship game of the WJOL Thanksgiving Classic – then went on a roll. When they took down previously unbeaten Wheaton Warrenville South in the championship game of the State Farm Classic at Christmas, they crashed the statewide map.

Likewise, Osusky has worked through the years to play the game to the best of her ability and not let her handicap affect her.

“They have a real good nucleus there at West,” he said. “My guys are hungry, they want to achieve. The goal is to get to the state tournament.

That’s what we are striving for; it will be what we strive for next year.

“There is so much success going on around us with the two Joliets and Bolingbrook, and my guys want to be part of that.”

West beat Central, 47-44, in last year’s sectional semifinal, and in this year’s meeting Feb. 18, the Tigers escaped the Steelmen, 51-49.

What will happen this time around,

like I have improved with the left,” she said. “I have driven and used my left hand on layups a number of times.”

The parallel between Anderson and Osusky extends to their on-court duties.

Osusky also is a defensive specialist, with all-out hustle atop her list of assets.

“Defense has been a key factor in my game,” she said. “I try to shut down

whoever Sam [Quigley Smith, the Saints’ coach] puts me on.”

Osusky has started all 32 games for the 31-1 Saints. She averages 4.8 points, 2.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.1 steals.

She is shooting 40 percent from the field, .323 (20 of 62) from 3-point range and .680 from the free-throw line.

Granted, the offensive numbers are not huge, but she said she will be ready to contribute on that end of the floor at the nationals.

“The girl on the other team defending me has been sagging off and helping defend the post,” she said. “The ball gets kicked back to me sometimes, so a big thing for me is to knock down those shots.

“I’ll definitely be putting in extra work on my shooting to prepare for the tournament. I’ll shoot a couple hundred jump shots a day, anyway, before we leave.”

Osusky said she had begun the process of putting the 88-64 loss to Saint Xavier two nights earlier in the CCAC Tournament title game behind her.

“I still have to watch the film, and I will,” she said at the time of the interview. “I’ll learn from it. Sam [Quigley Smith] wants all of us to watch it individually.

“I concentrate on myself when I watch film, but also on what I can do to make us better as a team.”

Osusky mentioned the disappointment of USF getting to the nationals after an outstanding season a year ago but losing in the opening round. She is determined to do her part to change that this time around.

“I and the team are super excited about getting another chance at the nationals,” she said.

we will have to wait until Wednesday to learn. On one of those nights where I wish I could have been in two places at once, I covered West’s win over Romeoville. The Tigers were as impressive as the final score suggests.

“This game gives us tons of momentum for the sectional,” Bell said.

Of course, I also have seen Central on several occasions, including that

championship game against Wheaton Warrenville South at Christmas. Both teams have sound reasons to believe they can be playing for the sectional title Friday night.

They’ve been especially good at the start of games (outscoring them 702442 in the first quarter) and have outscored their opponents by almost 200 points in both the second and third periods.

They also own advantages in rebounding (41.1 to 34.7), assists (18.9 to 10.8), steals (10.6 to 7.1), blocks (3.3 to 2.4) and in assist/turnover ratio (1.3 to 0.6) a game.

One area of concern for USF is that although it owned halftime leads in nearly all of its games this season, it has trailed at the break in its two most-recent contests, a 53-50 victory over Cardinal Stritch and a 88-64 loss to Saint Xavier.

Having experienced the disappointment of an early exit from the tournament last year, but also learning what nationals was all about, the Saints go into the competition with confidence.

“Now we realize that we have to come into each game thinking that every day could be our last one, because now it is,” senior Jordan Giddings said. “We know that we have to come in with everything that we have for every possession. We’re still going to get everyone else’s best game because they’re all playing like it’s their last game, too. So we really have to work as a team and play defense, and if we do that, we have all of the confidence in the world.

“Coach Quigley always tell us that we just have to play defense, and if we do, that we can beat anybody. That’s

our focus, no matter if shots are going in or if our offense isn’t working right.

I like our chemistry and how we all get along great. We have so many girls who played in last year’s national

tournament and some freshmen have been to state, so they know that atmosphere. We have a lot of good things that will push us at the national tournament.”

JOLIET – Most of the members of the University of St. Francis women’s basketball team don’t need to be reminded how their successful 2015-16 season ended.

That’s because 13 of the 18 players on the roster also were on last year’s team, and nine of those were on the court when the Saints made their first trip to the NAIA national tournament in 14 years.

In that game, USF entered ranked No. 6 in NAIA Division II with a 28-4 record, but it fell behind, 19-10, after one quarter, and dropped a 63-60 decision to Asbury University.

Despite the quick exit, the Saints had plenty to be proud of with their best season in program history. And with so many players back, prospects for more success seemed very likely.

And that’s just what has unfolded for coach Samantha Quigley Smith’s team this season, as the Saints were ranked No. 1 in the nation and won their first 31 games before suffering a loss to third-ranked Saint Xavier University in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship.

So bouncing back from their first defeat of the season and hoping to enjoy more success in this year’s NAIA D-II national tournament at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa, is more than enough motivation for the Saints.

USF (31-1) earned the top seed in the tournament and will meet the University of California at Merced in a first-round game at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday “Our loss definitely didn’t hurt us since we’re still No. 1 in the nation, and we feel great,” senior Charnelle Reed said. “Every team loses its fire at some point, but I feel like that game just added fuel to ours. The loss definitely humbles us and lets us know that we can be beat. But taking that loss was probably good, since it happened now. We had a goal to win the conference tournament, but we put that behind us since we have a bigger goal.

“We were at nationals last year and lost in the first round, so we obviously have a chip on our shoulders going in since we don’t want to feel that feeling again. We plan on staying focused on ourselves and understanding what we have to do to win. We’re huge competitors who don’t look past anyone since we know that teams just as good as us will be in the gym, too. And now we know what it feels like to be on that big stage and have the bright lights

Keselowski steals Atlanta win after Harvick caught speeding

HAMPTON, Ga. – Kevin Harvick ruined a dominating performance by going too fast on pit road Sunday, allowing Brad Keselowski to steal a NASCAR Monster Energy Cup victory at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Harvick seemed poised to win at the 1.54-mile trioval for the first time since his initial Cup victory in 2001, just three races after he got his chance following the death of Dale Earnhardt.

Harvick led the first two stages under NASCAR’s new format and was out front for a staggering 293 out of 325 laps overall. But after a yellow flag came out when Austin Dillon lost power, the No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford eclipsed the 45 mph speed limit going into the pits for his final stop.

The ensuing drive-thru penalty pushed Kyle Larson to the lead but he couldn’t hold off Keselowski, who surged ahead on the backstretch with six laps to go and held on for a 0.564-second victory.

This one was all about Harvick, who was looking to give Stewart-Haas its second straight victory to start the season after Kurt Busch’s won the Daytona 500.

Harvick clearly had the fastest car all weekend, starting from the pole and easily taking the first two 85-lap stages.

Then, when the victory was in his grasp, he led it slip away by going too fast.

The speeding penalty on pit road – an issue that plagued a bunch of drivers, including two-time defending race winner Jimmie Johnson – knocked

Harvick to the end of the lead pack with 11 laps remaining.

That wasn’t enough time to make up for his mistake, forcing him to settle for a ninth-place showing that should’ve been so much better.

“I didn’t think I was pushing it,” Harvick told his crew over the radio.

“I’m so sorry guys.”

He should be used to this sort of bitter disappointment in Atlanta.

Harvick led more laps than anyone each of the last three years, a total of 442 in all, but was never ahead when it mattered.

On Sunday, it happened again.

Harvick made only one other mistake all day, spinning his tires coming out of the pits during a caution period after Gray Gaulding blew an engine 62 laps from the end.

That one didn’t hurt.

Keselowski grabbed the lead, only to get word that his crew had not properly attached some of the tire lug nuts during his own pit stop. He had to come back in for a second stop, knocking him from the lead to 14th place on the restart.

Keselowski never gave up, working his way back toward the front.

He was poised to take advantage when Harvick blundered again.

“Kevin was very, very strong. He was the guy to beat,” Keselowski said after his 22nd career Cup victory. “But we persevered.”

Jimmie’s woes: Johnson, the seven-time Cup champion, was trying to become the first driver to win the Atlanta race three years in a row.

His hopes were ruined by not one, but two speeding penalties on pit road.

Johnson wound up a lap down in 18th place.

The Badgers (23-8, 12-6 Big Ten) secured the second seed in the conference tournament and got a sorely needed confidence boost to end the regular season after having lost five of their previous six games.

Nate Mason had 17 points for Minnesota (23-8, 11-7). The Golden Gophers had won eight straight.

Michigan 93, Nebraska 57: At Lincoln, Nebraska, It turned out Michigan coach John Beilein didn’t need to worry about how his team would respond to last week’s devastating loss to Northwestern.

The Wolverines turned in one of their best performances of the season Sunday, with Derrick Walton Jr. scoring 18 points and setting a school record with 16 assists in a rout of Nebraska – the Cornhuskers’ worst home loss in program history.

The Wolverines (20-11, 10-8 Big Ten) led by as many as 38 points, and the final margin was the biggest in a Nebraska home loss since Ohio State won 79-45 at the old Devaney Center in January 2012.

The Huskers (12-18, 6-12) finished the regular season with losses of 16, 16, 15 and 36 points. Fifth-year coach Tim Miles is now 75-85 overall and 33-57 in Big Ten games.

Iowa 90, Penn St. 79: At Iowa City, Iowa, Iowa senior star Peter Jok had a surprisingly slow start on the day when the Hawkeyes honored him.

Once Jok got going, he went on a scoring tear that reminded Iowa why it’s going to miss him so much.

Jok scored 20 of his 21 points in the second half – including 16 in less than eight minutes – and Iowa throttled Penn State, closing the regular season with four straight wins.

Reserve Nicholas Baer added 20 with 10 rebounds for the Hawkeyes (18-13, 10-8 Big Ten), who finished above .500 in conference play for the third year in a row.

Jok, starting his final scheduled home game, missed most of the first half after picking up two quick fouls.

But the Hawkeyes reeled off a 14-0 run without him, jumping ahead, 47-33, on a Jordan Bohannon 3 just before the end of the half.

No. 21 Wichita St. 71, Illinois St. 51: At St. Louis, Conner Frankamp scored 19 points, Markis McDuffie added 16 and Wichita State beat Illinois State in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championship game, earning an automatic NCAA tournament berth.

After splitting their regular-season series and sharing the conference championship, Wichita State left no doubt as to top team in the MVC was this season.

The Shockers (30-4) have won 15 straight games since losing at Illinois State on Jan. 14. The Redbirds (27-6) had won eight straight games since losing at Wichita State on Feb. 4.

Landry Shamet added 14 points for Wichita State. Paris Lee, the MVC’s player of the year, led Illinois State with 18 points, and MiKyle McIntosh had 16.

Rangers 9, Cubs 9: At Surprise, Arizona, Cubs’ rookie Albert Almora Jr., the sixth pick in the 2012 amateur draft, slugged a grand slam and had two hits. Willson Contreras hit his second homer of the spring, but Jon Lester struggled a bit while allowing two runs and three hits in two innings.

Nomar Mazara and Mike Napoli each had an RBI single for Texas. Jonathan Lucroy added two hits.

Diamondbacks 4, White Sox 1: At Scottsdale, Arizona, Taijuan Walker, obtained from Seattle in an offseason trade, threw three shutout innings for Arizona. Oswaldo Arcía homered and Jake Lamb doubled and drove in a run.

Tyler Saladino went deep for the Sox. Reynaldo Lopez, acquired in the offseason deal that sent Adam Eaton to Washington, pitched three innings and allowed one run.

EVANSTON – With a regular-season Big Ten championship already locked up, Purdue wanted to send a few more positive notes to the NCAA Selection Committee.

Vincent Edwards scored 16 of his 25 points in the second half and Caleb Swanigan added 20 points and 14 rebounds to help No. 16 Purdue beat Northwestern, 69-65, on Sunday.

Purdue (25-6, 14-4 Big Ten) clinched the outright regular-season conference title earlier in the week, but had to hold on in the final seconds to fend off Northwestern (21-10, 10-8) in front of a raucous sellout crowd.

Bryant McIntosh had 25 points and six assists for Northwestern. The Wildcats have lost six of nine.

Northwestern, who has been featured nationally this week after the thrilling win on Wednesday, played in front of a nationally televised CBS audience for the first time since Feb. 5, 2011.

Lewis men, women fall in GLVC title games SUBMITTED REPORTS

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Lewis University men’s and women’s basketball teams both fell in Sunday’s finals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships at the Ford Center.

The third-seeded Flyers women dropped a 67-63 decision to topseed Drury University after the seventh-seeded Flyers men fell, 74-61, to top-seeded Bellarmine University.

In the women’s championship, Lewis (23-8) took a 48-44 lead into the fourth quarter, but No. 6 Drury (28-3) outscored them, 23-15, in the final 10 minutes to rally for the victory.

The Flyers were led by Jessica Kelliher (17 points, eight rebounds), Jamie Johnson (14 points), Rachel Hinders (10 points), Gabby Green (nine points, seven assists) and Alyssa Siwek (eight rebounds). Drury’s Daejah Bernard led all scorers with 18 points.

Hinders, Johnson and Kelliher were named to the all-tournament team. Drury’s Heather Harman (17 points) was named MVP of the all-tournament squad while her teammate, Hannah Dressler, also was selected.

The Flyers were 27 of 55 from the floor (49.1 percent) while Drury connected on 23 of 56 attempts (41.1 per-

cent). But the victors only had six turnovers to 17 for Lewis, which resulted in a 17-0 advantage in points off of turnovers.

In the semifinals, the Flyers outscored Indianapolis, 44-23, in the middle quarters to claim the win, 69-50.

Kelliher had 26 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots, while Kayla Brewer had a career-high 16 points with Hinders adding 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

Men’s championship: Fourth-ranked Bellarmine University used a 12-0 run over the final three minutes to earn a 74-61 win over the Flyers in the Great Lakes Valley Conference championship on Sunday.

Cristen Wilson topped the Flyers with 21 points and eight rebounds, while Delaney Blaylock pitched in 14 points. Blaylock and Wilson both were selected to the all-tournament team.

Bellarmine’s Adam Eberhard (21 points, 11 rebounds) was the MVP of the all-tournament team, while his teammate, Rusty Troutman (23 points), also made the squad.

Lewis (19-13) made 24 of 54 shots (44.4 percent) while the Knights (28-3) hit 22 of 49 attempts (44.9 percent). Bellarmine outscored the Flyers, 27-11, in points off of turnovers.

Johnson wins in Mexico in debut as the No. 1 player in the world

MEXICO CITY – The only elevation that mattered at the Mexico Championship is how much higher Dustin Johnson can go.

In his first start since a five-shot victory at Riviera that made him No. 1 in the world, Johnson captured his fourth World Golf Championships title Sunday by blowing by some of golf’s biggest names and then delivering his best shot at the end to secure a one-shot victory over Tommy Fleetwood of England.

He won for the fifth time in his last 15 starts on the PGA Tour, including a major and two World Golf Championships.

And at nearly 7,800 feet above sea level at Chapultepec Golf Club, Johnson kept soaring.

He closed with a 3-under 68, and fin-

ished this one off with one of the most difficult shots in golf. Clinging to a oneshot lead, his feet on the edge of the bunker and ball below his feet, Johnson hit a three-quarter shot from 127 yards with his 54-degree wedge to the middle of the 18th green for a two-putt par.

He called it a “dink.” He also could have called it clutch.

“Probably the best shot I hit all week, especially under the circumstances, was that second shot on 18,” he said. “A fantastic shot.”

It wrapped up a spectacular week in Mexico City, which hosted this World Golf Championship after it had been at Trump Doral the last seven years.

Johnson walked through the roped corridors with his arms extended to slap hands and bump fists with an energetic crowd, especially kids who called out, “Dee-Jay!” Johnson finished at 14-under 270.

JOLIET – Will County Animal Control has entered into three-year agreements with 11 municipalities that both benefit the communities and cover the county’s costs, while caring for lost or abandoned animals.

The intergovernmental agreements with Braidwood, Channahon, Elwood, Godley, Homer Glen, Manhattan, New Lenox, Plainfield, Shorewood, Symerton and Wilmington were approved at the Feb. 16 meeting of the Will County board. Unincorporated parts of the county already are in Animal Control’s jurisdiction.

Under the agreement, only a community’s police officer may call out one of the department’s four animal control officers under an agreed upon fee schedule. Schild explained there is an officer on call no matter the day or time.

Once an animal is in the Department’s possession, it is boarded with an area veterinarian until the owner comes to claim it with a release from the municipality.

If after seven days the animal still is unclaimed, it is available for adoption.

Hep C testing unnecessary for most Dear Doctor: My doctor recommends I be tested for hepatitis C, and I’ve also seen commercials urging people to get tested for the virus – but I have no risk factors. Is it really necessary to get tested for it?

Dear Reader: The majority of people who become acutely infected with hepatitis C will not have any symptoms. Of people who acquire the infection, 15 percent to 45 percent will clear it on their own; that is, their immune system will ward off the virus.

However, anywhere from 55 percent to 85 percent of patients will develop a chronic infection and a chronic inflammation of the liver.

Many of them won’t have symptoms until the chronic infection leads to cirrhosis of the liver. That development can occur more than 20 years after the onset of infection.

New cases of hepatitis C are rare, with only 0.3 per 100,000 individuals, and are largely caused by injecting drugs via a needle used by someone with the virus. This practice was most common in the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s, and those at most risk were born between 1945 and 1965.

Based on this data, a 2012 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended a one-time testing for hepatitis C for those born in the United States between 1945 and 1965, saying that it would reduce death rates and liver cancer rates from the disease.

In years past, treatment of hepatitis C consisted of interferon-based therapy. This type of therapy was poorly tolerated by patients, with horrible side effects from the drug, and it cured patients only 45 percent of the time.

New antiviral therapies for hepatitis C do not contain interferon and are well-tolerated. They are simple to take, with once-

But the cost of the treatment is exorbitant. One 12-week course costs $94,500; another course of treatment costs $84,000. Due to the costs, insurers will not cover these medications unless there is some form of liver inflammation.

Now think about the population of people born between 1945 and 1965. These patients are between 52 and 72, and many of those at high risk have already seen a doctor and had multiple liver tests.

The likelihood of them being newly diagnosed with hepatitis C is low, and the likelihood that the infection will lead to cirrhosis or liver cancer if liver enzymes have been persistently normal is similarly low.

By screening people who have little risk of the complications of hepatitis C, we will be diagnosing more people without allowing them to get treatment.

Because of that, the focus on hepatitis C screening should be on those with high risk of infection and a high likelihood of transmitting hepatitis C to others. With injection drug use increasing in this country, this population needs to be actively screened.

If you’ve been seeing a doctor regularly, have had no previous risk factors and are not at a high risk of new infection, there may be no need to be screened for hepatitis C.

He has game-going values, but the best bid is definitely a wild leap to four diamonds. This is called a splinter bid. It shows four-card support or longer, at least game-going values and a low singleton or singleton ace (or void) in diamonds. (Do not splinter with a singleton king.)

Now South has no diamond losers because if necessary he can ruff them.

So he uses Blackwood to uncover the heart ace, heart king and spade king.

When he finds them opposite, he bids seven hearts.

How should the play proceed after West leads the diamond king?

The only danger is a 4-0 trump split. If East has all four hearts, declarer is down. But if West has them, South is safe as long as he starts with the trump queen, keeping dummy’s ace and king over West’s jack and 10. Declarer continues with a second trump, winning West’s 10 with the king. He returns to hand with, say, a spade, plays a heart to dummy’s nine, draws West’s last trump and claims.

South’s 13 tricks are two spades, five hearts, one diamond and five clubs.

Note that without the descriptive splinter bid, seven hearts is effectively unbiddable.
