A level of equality worth protesting I’ve heard more than a few people say they “don’t understand” why so many women marched in cities around the country a couple of weeks ago.

I’ve heard multiple women – grownup women – say they think American society treats men and women as equals.

We may be equals according to the letter of the law, but the fact is that my straight white guy friends and I are more equal. When the guys and I get together to watch the Super Bowl this weekend, it’ll be a regular festival of equality (and buffalo wings).

Other than the Super Bowl, I’ll gloss over the ways mass media is tailored to appeal to men and elevate masculinity, although you can research things such as the “male gaze” or the Bechdel test on your own if you want. Or just look at the advertisements all around you.

In everyday life, men have rights that most women are taught from a young age never to expect for themselves.

As a straight man, I never think about being sexually assaulted.

I’ve never experienced sexual harassment from a boss or co-worker.

I never worry about dressing too provocatively for fear I’ll be shamed or attract unwanted attention from wom-

en, or end up a victim of a crime before a judge who thinks I led my attacker on.

I go out after dark alone whenever I want, and I feel safe going pretty much anywhere. If I want to talk to a stranger of the opposite sex, I do so without a second thought.

However, I also have three daughters who are growing up in a society in which women are abused and objectified while some perpetuate the myth that they receive equal treatment.

Any father of daughters knows the joke about having to keep the boys away. The statistics behind that joke aren’t funny at all, however.

A 2015 study by the Association of American Universities found that one in four college women experience sexual violence during their college careers.

Usually it’s by a person they know.

One in six women – 15 percent – will be victims of an attempted or actual rape in their lifetime, and 90 percent of rape victims are female. But if they press charges against their attacker,

not only will they face potential humiliation in court as their sexual history is dissected, but they’re going to have a hard time seeing justice done without invasively obtained evidence gathered immediately after they were victimized.

Those are some of the realities of our “equal” society. And people marched because in the recent election, we as Americans condoned or at least were willing to overlook the behavior of the man we elected president.

Donald Trump has been married three times and has publicly said disparaging things about women and their bodies, before and during the campaign.

Trump was recorded saying in private that his celebrity status allowed him to kiss women and grab them, whatever he wanted.

“They let you do it,” he said. This audio was released during the campaign, and we elected him president, anyway.

Women have a right to demand better from society. All of us should support them in that.

Former building manager says he ‘had enough’ at Rialto

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Among the things new Rialto Square Theatre board members learned during a tour of the facilities last weekend was that the person in charge of maintaining the property had quit weeks ago.

Building Operations Manager Mike Biedron said Wednesday that he left the Rialto in December because he “had had enough” after cleaning toilets and bringing his wife to help do janitorial work because the Rialto would not hire people to take over custodial duties.

“I left pretty abruptly because I was at my wit’s end,” Biedron said. “We were drastically understaffed.”

Biedron returned Saturday to lead the tour of the new Rialto board through the theater and adjacent office space, exemplifying his expertise with the property.

Carlasare said he had previously been given Biedron’s name when he asked for a list of top managers at the Rialto, and no one told him that Biedron was no longer working there.

He and other board members were appointed in January after the previous Rialto board resigned Dec. 29. Carlasare said other board members also did not know Biedron had resigned until he mentioned it on the tour.

Biedron said he left the week before Christmas after he had been told for months that something would be done about the custodial situation.

He and his wife, Nancy Biedron, who was paid $11 an hour, had taken over

The anniversary party was held at the Rialto Square Theatre – the same place where the local United Way held its first campaign kickoff on Feb. 1, 1937.

Back then, it went by the name of Joliet Community Chest.

“Our commitment to this community remains the same as it was when we started in this venue 80 years ago,” Kathy Slattery, chairwoman of the United Way board, told the gathering that filled the Rialto rotunda.

Slattery also read a letter from the column of the late advice columnist Ann Landers with the theme “life begins at 80” to send a message that United Way looked forward to “many milestones” in the future.

United Way funding has become increasingly important in recent years amid the state budget crisis, said Ines Kutlesa, chief executive officer for Guardian Angel Community Services, which has programs for foster children,

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Junior College President Judy Mitchell shared her vision for the college’s future success to a crowd of local leaders Wednesday.

“We have a proud history at this institution as the first public community college in the nation. It is through this lens of unparalleled innovation and our history of revolutionizing local higher education that I consider the future of [JJC],” Mitchell said.

The pillars she shared at her presidential inauguration Wednesday included: ensuring fiscal responsibility and a stable budget; focusing on academic programming to meet the needs of the students; increasing graduation and retention rates; and focusing on community and legislative engagement, as well as philanthropic outreach.

JJC President Emeritus J.D. Ross spoke at the inauguration to give Mitchell some advice as she continues to lead the college. He complemented the board for having the “foresight and the courage” to appoint a qualified person “who just happened to be an internal candidate.”

Mitchell has worked at JJC for 20 years, rising through the ranks after starting out as a administrative assistant in the Computer Information and Office Systems department. She was appointed interim president following the

Ross encouraged Mitchell to continue being a servant leader, acting with integrity at all times, having a sense of humor and being herself.

“Use the tools that got you to the job to do the job,” Ross said.

With Mitchell’s pillars, she said it’s imperative the college provides the best education to students at an affordable cost.

Last year, JJC received only 24 percent of allotted state funding and college officials identified $6.5 million in contingency items that they will continue to reserve to avoid a potential deficit, she said.

“Many of these initiatives were a one-time cost reduction and cannot be repeated without impacting our students,” she said.

For academic programming, she said reviewing the college’s courses and curriculum is one step to ensuring the

success of students, but offering classes that meet their needs is equally important.

“I am working with our academic affairs team to review our course scheduling – minimizing class overlap and repackaging coursework so that students can receive a quality education when it’s convenient for them,” Mitchell said.

She said she also seeks to expand her reach in the community, sharing JJC’s achievements, gathering input on its initiatives, continuing to engage lawmakers and working with companies to develop curriculum that produce skilled workers.

“I am a building a bond with many of you already in the room and I will continue to do so throughout my presidency,” she said.

JJC seeks student support in face of state money woes

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Junior College officials are looking to get students to reach out to state lawmakers as the college considers raising tuition because of uncertain state funding.

Under a scenario where the college receives only 50 percent in state funding, administrators proposed to the Board of Trustees two options that could increase the total tuition and fee rate to either about $146 or $141 per credit hour.

JJC President Judy Mitchell said at Tuesday’s board meeting one message the college needs to put forward is asking students to reach out to state lawmakers.

“This [tuition] increase is because of the state funding,” she said.

State Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, who chairs the senate’s Higher Education Committee, said Wednesday

“I would assume the worst and hope for a little because I don’t think we’re going to get the best. The best would be if we get fully funded.”

Joliet Junior College board trustee the college’s action is understandable and they’re putting the blame where it belongs – on Gov. Bruce Rauner and lawmakers not enacting a budget.

He said a bipartisan compromise between Democratic Senate President John Cullerton and Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno would release money for higher education.

“The bipartisan compromise the Senate is hoping to reach would be good news for [JJC],” McGuire said.

Trustee Alicia Morales asked college officials what was being done to mobilize students on the issue.

Student Trustee Kathleen Duong said before winter break, students had contacted state lawmakers. Morales said that needed to continue, along with using petitions and visiting representatives.

“We need to organize more because I don’t think it’s fair we try and just put it back on students and ask them for more money,” Morales said.

Trustee Maureen Broderick asked if JJC had lawmakers’ contact information on the college’s website and suggested it should be on there. She also suggested the college make use of social media.

Board President Robert Wunderlich said the college will have to wait and see what happens at the state level but it wouldn’t hurt to reach out to lawmakers. Trustee Patricia Deiters was pessimistic about the possibility

of the college receiving the state support it needed.

“I would assume the worst and hope for a little because I don’t think we’re going to get the best. The best would be if we get fully funded,” Deiters said.

Following the two options the administration proposed, one option that would increase tuition to $141 per credit hour included differential tuition – additional tuition charged to certain courses that are costly to the college – that would net JJC about $1 million in additional revenue.

Mihelich and Morales were favorable to differential tuition, with Morales saying she would support it instead of an overall tuition increase.

Mihelich also urged the college to plan for a property tax freeze – which Rauner is seeking – that he personally thinks will occur.

“We got to make a plan for a property tax freeze,” he said.

Home sales increase in 2016 throughout Will County

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Will County saw growth in home sales in 2016.

The Three Rivers Association of Realtors reports that both home sales and median prices in the state of Illinois finished 2016 strong despite a year marked by tight housing inventories and continued strong consumer demand.

Will County had 10,631 closed sales in 2016, up slightly from 10,583 sales in 2015. The median sales price in the county went from $183,000 in 2015 to $199,654 in 2016, an increase of 9.1 percent.

Association CEO David McClintock said several factors probably have played into the buying trends, and noted more people are in the marketplace now.

“Credit could be clearing up, and consumer confidence could be clearing up,” McClintock said. “The job market appears to be stronger and financing rates could be less for many.”

In fact, some say the inventory of homes for sale in Will County isn’t enough to meet current demand.

“Our members have been encouraged with the increase in market prices

and decrease in market time,” Association President Matt Persicketti said.

“When a good house that is priced right goes on the market, it generally sells quickly. There is definitely a need for more houses to fill the demand.”

Realtor.com’s chief economist, Jonathan Smoke, told Illinois Realtors last week that low housing inventory is likely to have a significant impact on the 2017 housing market.

In Illinois, year-end inventory dropped to 50,213, which is down 15.7 percent from 2015 and the lowest level since 2008.

McClintock said interest rates don’t seem to be going up, and Realtors will have lobbyists trying to convince federal legislators to help keep it that way.

“The biggest hurdle will be inventory,” he said. “In Joliet, houses between $140,000 to $200,000 are going to sell quickly if they’re in good shape.”

Grundy County had 689 closed sales in 2016 versus 636 in 2015, an 8.3 percent increase. The median sales price in Grundy County was $163,000 in 2016 compared to $162,700 in 2015.

The Three Rivers Association of Realtors represents more than 900 members primarily in Will and Grundy counties.

Tommie Crockwell Sr., 47, faced a minimum of 45 years in prison so “anything [Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak] gave him would be a life sentence,” defense attorney Sam Adam said.

Crockwell Sr. had no prior criminal record, but the judge said the circumstances of the crime prevented her from issuing the minimum sentence.

“It was an [ambush] in the dark on the unsuspecting Mr. Rouse,” Bertani-Tomczak said.

Keith Rouse recalled the last time he saw his son alive. He went into his room to say he was leaving for work and put some meal money on his

dresser. They each said they loved the other. The next time Keith Rouse saw his son was in the back of a mortuary.

“Seeing your child’s body cold and lifeless is something no one should endure,” Keith Rouse said. “I don’t hate you. ... I can’t forgive you. You took my son away from me but you can’t take my humanity away from me.”

Keith Rouse finished his testimony by addressing Crockwell Sr. from the witness stand.

“Just as Johnny can’t get out of his square box, I don’t think you should get out of yours,” he said.

Crockwell Sr. did not address the court before he was sentenced.

According to district documents, there were 180 incidents of vandalism, fly dumping, theft or accidents resulting in losses at 36 district sites, with a total cost of $13,611.41 to date in materials, labor, equipment and contracted repairs.

The totals represent a 21 percent increase from 2015 in the total number of incidents and a 25 percent decrease from 2015 in the total cost. Sugar Creek Preserve and Hammel Woods had

the highest number of incidents and McKinley Woods and Wauponsee Glacial Trail recorded the highest costs in 2016.

The district’s Finance Committee positively recommended the 2017 vehicle fuel contract. The district received one bid for the contract, at a cost of $163,272, submitted by Heritage FS Inc. of Wilmington.

The contract includes up to 58,000 gallons of gasoline and 14,000 gallons of diesel fuel.

In the back of her mind, she wondered if it might be her heart, but she and her husband decided it was probably not. She was too young to have angina, they thought.

“Every time I exerted myself,” she said, “tingling and numbness went up and down my arms. It was more prominent in my right arm, and I had a lot of shortness of breath.”

COAL CITY – February is Heart Health Month, physicians and patients are stepping up to remind folks to be aware of the symptoms of heart disease and to get medical help immediately when they experience them.

One can be any age, gender, size or state of health and have serious heart problems.

MarySue McLey of Coal City might have been thought of as too young for heart disease at age 49. She had been a little short of breath, but then again, that had been going on for decades, she said. Even in high school, she couldn’t put in the long-distance mileage her teammates did when running. She was diagnosed, mistakenly, she said she learned later, with asthma.

During the summer of 2015, as McLey and her family still were reeling from the damage the infamous Coal City tornado did to their home, she took her dog for a walk around the neighborhood.

“I had the worst chest pain,” she said. “I had to sit down on the sidewalk with my dog until it subsided.”

Even little tasks such as bringing in the groceries or vacuuming would set off her symptoms again.

It was October 2016 when McLey saw her physician, Morris Hospital cardiologist Dr. Syed Ahmed, to prepare for carpal tunnel surgery to repair an injury from repetitive keyboard typing. Ahmed had given her a stress test a couple of years before, she said, because of a family history of heart disease.

He told her he wanted a nuclear dye stress test before the surgery, McLey said, since it had been a while since her last one. It was a good thing she had it.

“Dr. Ahmed said there was something unusual in the test,” she said, “and he wanted to do an angioplasty. ... When I woke up from the angioplasty, Dr. Ahmed, my mom and dad and my husband were all in the room.”

The finding was serious. McLey had a rare birth defect called ALCAPA, or anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery. It’s a condition that involves a different placement of a coronary artery.

The condition occurs in about 1 in 300,000 babies, according to the American Heart Association’s website. A majority of those undiagnosed babies die of congestive heart failure within the first year of their life.

McLey somehow had survived 50 years with the heart vessel abnormality. At any time, she could have suffered sudden cardiac death, heart failure, myocardial ischemia or arrhythmia’s.

The diagnosis was not easy to take.

“My mom started crying and had to leave Dr. Syed the room,” she said. Ahmed “My mouth was open, and I said, ‘Repeat that again.’ [Dr. Ahmed] said I could have had a massive heart attack anywhere, anytime, and I would have probably died.”

Ahmed scheduled her immediately for open heart surgery in Chicago.

Today, McLey is better. Her rehabilitation at Morris Hospital is going very well, she said.

“I feel better than I have my whole life,” she said. “This past birthday, I had the biggest celebration of my life.

God has given me a second chance in life. ... I probably never had asthma. It was a misdiagnosis.”

“We are seeing more and more cases of heart disease in women probably due to increased awareness and paying more attention to the symptoms.”

Morris Hospital cardiologist Heart disease can happen to anyone, Ahmed said, of any age, and people with symptoms should take them very seriously.

According to the AHA, symptoms of a heart attack in women can be different than those in men and can include: • Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in the center of the chest. It lasts more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back.

• Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.

• Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort.

• Other signs, such as breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.

As with men, women’s most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of

breath, nausea/vomiting and back or jaw pain.

“We are seeing more and more cases of heart disease in women,” Ahmed said, “probably due to increased awareness and paying more attention to the symptoms.”

That’s the good news. Ahmed said women are recognizing the symptoms and getting medical attention faster than they did years ago. Physicians, he said, also are more aware of heart disease in women.

“Women are coming in to see me without symptoms, just wanting to get checked,” he said. “Today, I see more and more women with heart disease without symptoms. Before, I was seeing them in the ER.” Ahmed said women and men can work toward preventing heart disease by getting more exercise. He said that 64 percent of Americans are inactive, and it’s becoming more common in teenagers and young people.

“That stagnates the blood flow,” he said.

And women in particular, he said, need to start paying as much attention to their health as they do to the health of their family. Blood pressure should be checked one or two times a year, he said, and lipid profiles done after age 40 – earlier if the person is a smoker.

LOCAL BRIEFS Two women arrested in separate Braidwood cases

BRAIDWOOD – Two women were arrested by Braidwood police in unrelated drug cases Tuesday night.

The first incident occurred about 5:50 p.m. when officers saw a vehicle with a cracked window on Main Street in Braidwood and made a traffic stop. Chief Nick Ficarello said Tiffany R. Emanuelson, 34, “was acting very nervous” and a police canine detected Tiffany R. Emanuelson drugs in the area.

When Emanuelson was asked if she had anything illegal, she removed four bags of heroin from her bra, Ficarello said. Emanuelson was taken to the police station where she Tammy L. Fiedler then turned over seven other bags that had been hidden in her underpants.

Ficarello said police seized 4 grams of heroin. Emanuelson, of the 400 block of West Main Street in Essex, was arrested on a charge of drug possession and

booked into the Will County jail.

At 6:30 p.m. police received information that Tammy L. Fiedler, 35, was going to be selling drugs in a parking lot in the 100 block of East Main Street in Braidwood, Ficarello said. Officers reportedly witnessed a drug sale and moved in to arrest Fiedler and seize 21 Adderall tablets.

Ficarello said Fiedler has been under investigation for drug activity “for the last several months.”

Fiedler, of the 1900 block of North Division Street in Morris, was arrested on charges of delivery of drugs and drug possession and booked into the Will County Jail.

“I had to leave my home; if you knew the kind of home it was you’d understand,” she said. “I hit the streets and got in with the wrong type of people.”

Today, Holiday is a pastor at House of Glory for all Nations Church in Morris, where she has made it her mission to provide girls, who are now like she was a way out of the streets and the sex trafficking industry.

She said it’s important to bring the message to all people, even the small rural towns such as Morris where young girls are kidnapped and sold to sex traffickers and forced to do things they never intended to do.

She said with the internet, sex traffickers have found their way into lives of girls everywhere, so she founded the Love Outreach Training and Development Center to educate Morris and

surrounding communities about sex trafficking and give the girls someone to reach out to.

On Saturday, Holiday held an open house at the center’s new office at 1522 Creek Drive in Morris.

She said she is working with Selah Freedom and Dream Center, both of Chicago, as well as Children of the Night in California in an effort to reach the girls being trafficked and give them someone to call who can help them escape.

In addition to those groups, she also is working with a local trauma nurse and a therapist from Guardian Angel Services as she moves forward.

She said networking with other agencies helps her to have resources to get the girls out safely and to people who are equipped to take care of their physical and emotional scars as well as provide them with a place to live.

Holiday said she will be reaching out to Morris Community High School to see how she can help educate the local girls on what to watch for and how to avoid situations that could land them in the world of sex trafficking.

Support from United Way has helped the agency continue domestic violence programs for which Guardian Angel is owed more than $100,000 in state funding, Kutlesa said.

“Because of what’s going on at the state level and federal level, I don’t know if there was a time when support was more critical,” she said.

Guardian Angel and the Greater Joliet Area YMCA are two organizations that have been funded through United Way since it was the Joliet Community Chest. United Way funds especially are important in supporting children who otherwise might not be able to take part in 42 after-school programs that the YMCA runs in Joliet- and Plainfield-area schools, said James Watts, chief executive officer of the Greater Joliet Area YMCA. “The funds that we get from United Way have helped us make good on our promise not to turn anybody away if they cannot afford us,” Watts said.

Mike Biedron said he did not have another job when he left the Rialto but now is working for the state of Illinois.

Interim Executive Director Timothy Berry said one of the engineers from Mike Biedron’s staff, Mark Busen, has taken over the building manager’s duties on an interim basis. He said the Rialto plans to hire someone for the job but does not know when.

“It’s just an important position that needs to be filled,” Berry said. “We do hope to fill it sooner rather than later.”

Berry works for VenuWorks, the management company that arrived in September and is in the process of negotiating a contract with the new board.

At least a one-year contract must be in place before the Rialto receives $250,000 in needed funds from the city of Joliet.

The Rialto faces a backlog of unpaid bills that was listed at $597,000 last week.

In an interview, Slattery said that despite United Way being around 80 years, it has needed to adapt to a changing world and get the message out about what it does.

“Donors want to know what their money is doing. They don’t want to just give,” she said.

Marcie Staley, a longtime donor, said she never really was aware how

far the United Way reaches into the community until she became a member of the organization’s Impact and Investment Committee.

“It kind of surprised me,” she said. “I would literally on my drive to work drive by places that were United Way recipients, and I had no idea.

“You don’t know how your money is out there helping people. Then when you look at what these agencies are doing and the impact that they have, that’s when it’s very fulfilling.”

Japanese arcade pioneer and ‘Father of Pac-Man’ has died

TOKYO – Masaya Nakamura, the “Father of Pac-Man” who founded the Japanese video game company behind the hit creature-gobbling game, has died. He was 91.

Nakamura, who died Jan. 22, founded Namco, part of Bandai Namco, in 1955. It started out as just two mechanical horse rides on a department store rooftop but went on to pioneer game arcades and amusement parks.

Bandai Namco, formed in 2005 from a merger of two game companies, confirmed Monday that Nakamura had died.

Pac-Man, designed by Namco engineer and video game maker Toru Iwatani, went on sale in 1980, at a time when there were few rival games, such as Space Invaders. The plucky yellow circle with the huge mouth was a huge hit.

It’s estimated to have been played more than 10 billion times: Guinness World Record has named it the world’s most successful coin-operated arcade game.

The game was nonviolent but just challenging enough to hook players into steering the Pac-Man for hours through its mazes on the hunt for ghostly tidbits.

The iconic Pac-Man adorns T-shirts and other merchandise and inspired

animation shows, a breakfast cereal and even the nickname for Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao.

The idea for Pac-Man’s design came from the image of a pizza with a slice carved out. Nakamura reportedly chose the word “Pac,” or “pakku” in Japanese, to represent the sound of the Pac-Man munching its prey.

“Pac-Man is a gamer-friendly game with tons of cute characters, and that’s why it was loved for such a long time,” Iwatani said in 2015 at a New York red carpet premiere of “Pixels,” which featured Pac-Man creatures and featured him in a cameo role.

The game started out as an arcade item and then was played on the Nintendo Family Computer home con-

sole. It since has been adapted for cellphones, PlayStation and Xbox formats.

Other hits from Namco include driving simulation games such as “Ridge Racer” and a drumming game.

Nakamura was a key player in Bandai Namco’s global growth. His pet saying was that his company delivered varied and total entertainment.

He took pride in having fun and games for his job.

The company reported Nakamura’s death but would not comment on its cause or other personal details, citing his family’s wishes. A private wake and funeral were held for the family, but a separate memorial is being planned, Bandai-Namco said.

CHICAGO – A bipartisan group of lawmakers and other officials reached agreement Wednesday on a plan to bring more equity to the way Illinois funds its schools, although enacting the blueprint could be tricky amid the state’s budget stalemate.

Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner convened the 25-member commission six months ago to address the growing spending gap between low- and high-poverty districts, one of the widest such gaps in the nation.

The framework would create funding targets for districts based on the needs of a student population, rather than the current system in which every district receives the same base level of per-student funding. Under the new model, districts with high percentages of low-income or disabled students, for example, would get additional resources.

Democratic state Sen. Andy Manar, who has sponsored previous school funding legislation, had hoped the commission would be able to introduce legislation Wednesday. But short of that, he said the fact that the group agreed that more resources are needed for districts with high numbers of low-income students is “substantial.”

Metra fare increase took effect Wednesday

CHICAGO – Passengers are paying more to travel on Chicago’s suburban commuter rail service.

Metra’s fare increase took effect Wednesday.

One-way tickets increased by 25 cents, or between 2.4 percent and 7.1 percent depending how far a passenger is traveling. Monthly passes are increasing by $11.75, while 10-ride tickets will cost $2.75 more a ticket.

Metra’s board approved the increase last year. They said it will generate an additional $16 million, and all of that money will go toward a backlog of capital projects.

Feds reimburse $4M for veterans home water system

QUINCY – The federal government is reimbursing Illinois more than $4 million for a new water treatment facility at a Quincy veterans home that was the site of a Legionnaires’ disease outbreak.

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner on Wednesday said the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs was awarding the money to the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs, which would reimburse the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.

An outbreak of the disease killed 12 people and sickened at least 54 in 2015 and a federal report found the bacteria was likely spread by an aging water system.

The bacteria that cause Legionnaires’ disease grow in warm water and are often present in water supplies. The disease is spread when a person inhales water mist.

The talks about overhauling the school formula have progressed even as lawmakers remain unable to solve the state’s overall budget standoff, which is now well into its second year. Democratic and Republican leaders in the state Senate included school funding reform in a recent attempt to negotiate a “grand bargain” solution to the larger crisis.

She added that questions remain over how to increase funding without overburdening local taxpayers who are already “taxing themselves to the hilt” to fund their schools.

Delayed payment ups costs in whistleblower case

CHICAGO – Chicago State University has been ordered by a Cook County judge to pay $4.3 million to a school official who was fired after accusing the school’s former president of misconduct.

That’s about $1 million more than a jury awarded in 2014 to attorney James Crowley because the university has delayed paying damages in a whistleblower lawsuit. The jury in 2014 found Crowley was fired for turning over former university president Wayne Watson’s employment records to a faculty member under the state’s open records law, and for exposing questionable university contracts.

Crowley said Tuesday he hopes a newly appointed university board of trustees brings the case to a close rather than spend more money contesting the case.

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump urged the Senate’s Republican leader Wednesday to resort to the “nuclear option” of scrapping longstanding chamber rules if needed to confirm Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch, an aggressive opening to what’s shaping up as a ferocious clash over the future of the high court.

At the White House a day after nominating Gorsuch, Trump endorsed a scenario that would involve majority Republicans unilaterally changing Senate rules over the objections of the Democratic minority.

It could come into play if Democrats try to block Gorsuch’s confirmation with a filibuster, as the liberal base is demanding, and would allow the GOP to confirm Gorsuch with a simple majority instead of the 60 votes now needed.

Addressing GOP Senate leader Mitch McConnell from the White House, Trump said, “If we end up with that gridlock I would say, ‘If you can, Mitch, go nuclear.’ ” He said of Gorsuch that it “would be a absolute shame if a man of this quality was caught up in the web.”

Trump made his comments as Gorsuch traversed Capitol Hill, escorted by Vice President Mike Pence and winning extravagant praise from Republican senators.

Democratic divisions were on display. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer faced intense opposition from base voters to Trump’s nominee, while political risks confronted a half-dozen Democratic senators representing red states who are up for re-election next year and may feel pressure to support Gorsuch.

McConnell has not said whether he might invoke the nuclear option if minority Democrats block Gorsuch’s confirmation, but the Senate leader has said repeatedly that, one way or another, Gorsuch will be confirmed.

He reiterated that Wednesday evening in an interview on WHAS radio in Kentucky, saying: “Well I appreciate the president’s advice. What I would say to him is what I would say to you: We’re going to get this nominee confirmed and this is the beginning of a lengthy process.”

Democrats are still smarting over the treatment of Judge Merrick Garland, former President Barack Obama’s nominee to the court after the death of Justice Antonin Scalia a year ago. McConnell never allowed even a hearing on Garland over 10 months, asserting that the decision was up to the next president.

on the court,” said Sen. Jeff Merkley of Oregon.

Schumer reiterated Wednesday that Democrats would insist on a 60-vote threshold for Gorsuch in the 100-member Senate, “not because they did it to us or we did it to them, but because 60 votes produces a mainstream candidate.” But as Schumer and other Democrats made clear, for many the fight was less about the mild-mannered 49-year-old appeals court judge than about Trump himself.

Schumer said that “this Supreme Court will be tried in ways that few courts have been tested since the earliest days of the Republic.” Schumer had been invited to meet with Gorsuch on Wednesday but declined so he could learn more about the nominee’s record first.

The rules change for Supreme Court nominees would be a momentous departure for the Senate, which traditionally operates day-to-day via deliberation and bipartisan consent.

There is concern by some that it could begin to unravel Senate traditions at a hyperpartisan moment in politics and perhaps end up in the complete elimination of the filibuster – resulting in an entirely different Senate from the one that’s existed for decades.

As we said in our letter to the president, the contributions of these Iraqi individuals in support of America’s global campaign against radical terrorism is significant and invaluable to our mission. I’m hopeful the president will take our considerations and remedy these issues swiftly.

To the Editor: A letter to the editor that appeared in your Jan. 22 edition expressed deep consternation that the city of Joliet would experience an $800,000 loss from taking over the South Ridgewood Sanitary District. The facts in this matter are far different than recent news articles.

The sanitary district was created

by Joliet Township to provide relief for one of the most polluted areas in the state of Illinois. To accomplish its creation, each homeowner had to contribute $2,000, of which $800 was paid to the city of Joliet.

In the beginning, all bills from the city were paid on time. However, insufficient sewage flow caused the flow valves to clog and give extremely high readings. After the city blew out the lines, the readings would return to normal.

Unfortunately, the city stopped blowing out the lines. The district offered the city the proposal to blow out the lines one more time and use the readings of a 10-day period as the basis for billing. The city refused.

The district stopped paying the extremely high bills the city kept issuing,

but had to withdraw its suit as there was no rational basis for the billing.

All funds collected by the sanitary district, minus the monies spent for billing, collection and accounting, will be turned over to the city. The city also will get the district’s high quality sewer lines, which have no infiltration of stormwater. The only loss the city will experience is basically the collection and accounting costs, which amount to about $80,000. Some of these same costs the city would have had to bear had they been the operating system.

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Junior College’s women’s basketball team had the unenviable task of following up on a loss to second-ranked Rock Valley College with a game against Madison College, a squad ranked third in NJCAA Division III. And in a clash of two players who already have been selected twice as the division’s National Player of the Week, JJC’s Deesha Brefford was held 11 points below her season average while Madison’s Rachel Slaney went 4½ points over her 25.5 scoring average, which is fifth-best in the nation, the numbers didn’t really add up to an upset win.

But the Wolves had four other players who matched or exceeded Brefford’s nine-point total and thus were able to lead throughout much of the contest as they claimed a 72-67 North Central Community College Conference victory Wednesday at Fizz Wills Gym. Kianna Campbell (Lockport) led the Wolves (15-9, 5-4) with 19 points and five steals, Destiny Villalejo (Families of Faith Christian Academy) contributed 12 points, Treanna Perry (Joliet West) had 10 points and Cora Likins (Lincoln-Way Central) joined Brefford (six assists, 11 rebounds) with nine points apiece. That balanced attack more than made up for the 30-point and 22-rebound effort turned in by Slaney for the Wolfpack (17-5, 6-2).

“This shows what we’re capable of,” Wolves coach Shaun Sanderson said. “We told them at the beginning of the season that we knew that they could do it, because we recruited you.

They get used to the leading scorer scoring and they stand and watch. But Deesha does so many other things for us, like passing the ball and rebounding, and she’s so unselfish.

“We talked about limiting them to one shot and giving ourselves second and third opportunities to score, because those are the baskets that you want. This is a tough conference with four teams that easily could be in the top 10. At the end of the day, there’s

The Wolves grabbed a 25-18 lead after one quarter and used a strong finish to give them a 48-36 halftime advantage, and Madison got no closer than seven points in the third quarter and still trailed, 58-51, with 10 minutes remaining.

Slaney scored her final points on a rebound bucket with 4:50 to go to pull her team to within 64-62, but JJC held the visitors scoreless for the next 4:20 while going on an 8-0 run with Kierra Tyler (Joliet West) and Campbell each supplying four points in that decisive stretch.

“This was our best game,” Campbell said. “We were prepared for it and wanted it really bad. We had a wakeup call against Rock (Valley), and we couldn’t take two big losses in a row, we had to come back and take one.

ROMEOVILLE – Romeoville football coach Oliver Gibson was not about to say it during the season, but Wednesday’s National Letter of Intent Signing Day provided the ideal setting.

“This young man not only has Saturday talent; if he continues to work hard, he has Sunday talent,” Gibson said as the school celebrated the signings/commitments of five football players. “That’s something I never would have said while he was playing for me, but it is the truth. He has that bright of a future.”

The object of the coach’s adulation was running back Jordan Nettles, who signed with Northern Illinois University. He had committed to the Huskies last June 16. They made an offer to him shortly after he attended their camp.

Nettles is not a big back by any means. He played last season at about 175 pounds. But he is tough, elusive and fast.

Nettles, a Herald-News All-Area selection, rushed for 1,405 yards in his senior season and 18 touchdowns. He averaged 7.6 yards a carry and broke the school’s single-game rushing record with 291 yards against Plainfield Central. Opposing coaches and players consistently were complimentary of him.

“It was humbling that they talked highly of me,” Nettles said.

Romeoville finished 3-6 but did have a late-season, three-game winning streak. Nettles’ teammates who were cited Wednesday included offensive lineman Felipe Alvarez and defensive end Davon Maxey, who will attend Aurora University, defensive lineman Thaddeus Ampadu with the University of St. Francis and outside linebacker Birley Johnson with Robert Morris University.

“I love doing this because at the end of the day, this is what it is all about,” Gibson said. “We have another kid, Scott Oderio, who will pick a college later. He is Academic All-State. We will have a couple of others playing in college, too.”

“This was a great team to play on,” Nettles said of the Spartans. “I couldn’t be more happy for that experience. We would have liked for our record to be better, but at the end of the day, I was blessed to play on this team.”

“Jordan is one of the most dedicated players I have seen,” Gibson said.

“He is humble and hardworking. But it is his personality, humility and work ethic together that are going to take

Gibson, the national defensive player of the year in 1989 as a senior at Romeoville, played at Notre Dame, then spent nine seasons in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals.

He has seen scores of talented backs.

He said Nettles compares favorably to former Atlanta Falcons standout Warrick Dunn and current Miami Dolphins back Damien Williams, whom Gibson coached at Arizona Western Junior College before he transferred to Oklahoma.

Nettles currently is training for track season, where he plans to be busy. He said he could compete in the 100, 200 and three sprint relays.

“Most definitely, I want to finish my last year in track with a bang,” he said.

After graduation, he will head to NIU for summer camp.

“If the summer goes well, they told me I may have a chance to play my freshman year,” Nettles said. “But if they redshirt me, it’s no different. I’ll still keep working.

“When you’re a back at NIU, you have to block and catch the ball besides running. I’m working to be a back who can do everything. I feel I have to keep

working on everything. I want to be one of the greats, be in the NFL some day.”

“I look at them as a Boise State of the Midwest,” he said. “Jordan will have an opportunity to play against a Big Ten or SEC school or two, and that will be a good proving ground.”

Rod Carey is NIU’s head coach. The coach Nettles will deal with most often, in all likelihood, is offensive coordinator/assistant head coach/running backs coach Mike Uremovich, a Providence Catholic graduate and former University of St. Francis head coach.

Six Providence football players reveal college picks

cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Six football players from Providence Catholic got the opportunity to celebrate with family and friends Wednesday as they announced where they intend to continue their careers in the sport, as well as their academic plans.

Coach Mark Coglianese’s Celtics were represented by Chris Binder, Jared Drake, Martez Malone Jr., Kevin Marmo, Kevin O’Boyle and Richie Warfield, who are bound for six different schools that make up a good cross-section of college football.

Warfield is headed to the University of Dayton in Ohio, where he plans to major in business.

“I went there and really fell in love with the school,” Warfield said.

“I liked all of the coaches and every player that I met there, and they all had really good things to say about the program, and it was just something that I really wanted to be a part of.

“And it’s a great place to continue not only my athletic future, but also my academic future, which is first and foremost. I feel that I’m in a special place that really caters to the student athlete in the best way possible and it’s something that I’m really looking forward to.”

O’Boyle will continue at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin, where he intends to major in business finance.

Marmo will go to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, where he hopes to major in biology.

“I’m really excited to have another chance to play next year, since I definitely was not ready to be done after this year,” Marmo said. “I’m just excited to have another four years to play football again, playing a sport that I love.”

Malone will attend McKendree University in downstate Lebanon, where he intends to major in physical therapy.

“I’m very proud for having stayed through football for all four years,” Malone said. “I’ve worked hard in the weight room and gotten better with everyone on the team. It’s a great opportunity since not a lot of kids have the ability to go to the next level, so I feel blessed.

“One of their coaches saw me on film and told me that they could really use me at McKendree. When I looked at my options, I definitely was committing to their school.”

Binder will stay closest to home, going to Elmhurst College, where he plans to major in exercise science.

“I’m very excited to go to Elmhurst,” Binder said. “My sister goes there and is finishing up her last year in grad school, so we’re going to carry on the tradition. I’ve been playing football since I was in fourth or fifth grade, so it’s nice to have this opportunity to keep playing.”

The Joliet West cheerleaders will look to win a second straight state title this weekend.

dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet West family enjoyed a whirlwind couple of weeks last February when the competitive cheerleading team won the LargeTeam state title and the girls bowling team followed suit with their first state championship.

The Tigers’ competitive cheerleaders will take their best shot at repeating this weekend after winning the Normal West Sectional and advancing to the state finals Friday and Saturday at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington.

Twenty-five teams qualified, five from each sectional, in each division – Large Team, Medium Team, Small Team and Co-Ed. The Joliet area representatives include Joliet West, Lincoln-Way East, Lockport, Plainfield East, Providence and Minooka in Large Team. Morris and Lemont qualified in Medium Team, Reed-Custer, Wilmington and Dwight in Small Team and Plainfield South in Co-Ed. Lincoln-Way East and Reed-Custer won sectional titles at Andrew, and Morris claimed a sectional crown at Normal West.

Joliet West’s sectional championship was the first in five years for the Tigers under coach Amy DiForti, who is in her 12th season. Becky Stortz is in her second season as DiForti’s varsity assistant. She previously coached for several years on the junior varsity level.

Sixteen of the 24 on the Tigers’ roster were on the state championship

team a year ago, and with the coaching staff intact, West has experience in its favor.

“It does help that we won last year, I guess, but I’m never 100 percent confident,” DiForti said. “I know these girls are going to do their best. It’s pretty cool that we won the sectional, but we actually did not do our best that day.

We were good, but there is room for growth.”

West is scheduled to perform at 4:10 p.m. Friday in the preliminaries, where there always is pressure. Ten of the 25 schools in each division will qualify for Saturday’s finals. Everything scoring-wise will be erased after Friday and starts over Saturday.

“You have to go out there under the lights and get through the first round and enjoy the moment,” DiForti said. “Fortunately, I’ve got a great group of kids and a great group of seniors. They’re definitely extremely hard-working and self-motivated. They are all in. Everyone understands the culture.”

The West seniors are Brynn Becker, Sandra Egizio, Karolyn Johnson, Brooklyn Johnson, Rachel Macdowell, Lydia Schrock and Taylor Styrczula.

Juniors include Hope Benavidez, Megan Carbaugh, Leah Combs, Lea Delattre, Makayla Hurd, Mario Magowen, Jessica Orr, Lexi Stariha and Julia Todd. Sophomores Taylor Latta, Lindsey McCrea, Jazmine Morales, Lauren Peters, Ria Roland and Ashley Styrczula, along with freshmen Kennedy Aubry and Kelsey Bishop, complete the roster.

The Wolves are hoping that the big win over one of the top-ranked teams in their division provides a spark for the rest of the campaign.

“We learned a lot from the first time that we played them and worked on it,” said Nia Harris (Romeoville), who had six rebounds. “We really came together as a team this time, which is all that I wanted. I’m really glad that we could do that and execute the game plan.

“We’ve lost a few players, but we’ve learned to work with what we’ve got.

I think this is one of more important wins. What I like the most about this team is that we never give up.”

JOLIET – Joliet Junior College’s men’s basketball team turned the tables on Madison College in Wednesday’s N4C game at Fizz Wills Gym. The Wolves lost, 81-58, when they played Jan. 7 at Madison but defeated the Wolfpack, 67-38, in the rematch to improve to 18-7 overall and 4-5 in league play.

JJC led, 31-20, at halftime and opened the second half with a 15-2 run to break things open.

Bringing needs and resources together KC and Gail Crino’s ministry meets people’s most basic needs

JOLIET – Every Tuesday without fail, Michael “KC” Crino shows up at the Spanish Community Center.

“He’s a big help with our food pantry,” said Monica Vasquez, citizenship and immigration director.

Crino oversees the five to 10 volunteers who work the weekly food pantry, which runs from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Vasquez said. He arrives 60 to 90 minutes early to set up and stays afterward to ensure everything is clean and in order.

It’s just one ministry Crino – a deacon at Judson Baptist Church in Joliet – and his wife, Gail Crino, perform as founders of the Joliet Community Transformation Initiative, which takes a collaborative approach to community transformation.

The initiative is part of International Teams, a Christian organization that helps the oppressed and strives to restore human dignity with the slogan, “We change the future with each other with Jesus,” according to one pamphlet KC provided.

JCTI connects local churches, community-based organizations, schools, businesses and, yes, even individuals, to bring “deep and holistic change for everyone in the community,” according to a written statement provided by KC. “We identify needs, we identify resources, and we bring those together,” KC said. “The great joy I get is bringing people together.”

KC’s pastor at Judson, the Rev. Kevin Comfort, summed it up like this: KC ministers to people who “need someone to walk alongside them.”

A network of service and ministry

In an email, Kristine Schlismann, director of community and alumni relations at Joliet Township High School District 204, said KC serves on the district’s strategic planning team and volunteers with the Restorative Justice Problem Solving Circle Program, in which students on expulsion warning participate in a series of problem-solving circles.

The program began after KC arranged for student ambassadors from Joliet Central and Joliet West high schools to present “What to Expect in High School” to the church’s eighthgrade students and parents.

“KC has a gift that brings people together in a way that strengthens our community,” Schlismann said.

“He is truly a ‘connector’ who understands the importance of sharing resources.”

Gregory Thompson, the dean of students at Joliet West and coordinator for the problem-solving circle program, said he’s rarely met anyone as devoted to community as KC, while still being equally dedicated to his family and faith.

“I think it’s important to meet people like that,” Thompson said. “It gives the rest of us hope.”

James Kucer, the New Beginnings manager at Catholic Charities Daybreak Center in Joliet, said KC is a weekly volunteer with his program.

New Beginnings offers supportive housing for homeless men, Kucer said.

“They can stay here as long as they want in, basically, their own apartments,” Kucer said. “I’m just here to help with whatever they need help with – counseling, medical issues.”

Kucer said he met KC about a year ago at a meeting at Will County Center for Community Concerns. KC also volunteers Wednesdays at Daybreak Center’s Shepherd’s Table, Kucer said, which serves meals from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for anyone in the community who needs them.

They just stay to themselves, but when KC comes in and asks them if they need a bike or a tent, they’ll readily take him up on his offer.”

Since KC is “in” with the homeless population, is he familiar with Steve Sherwood, a street preacher who’s lived on the streets for more than 15 years?

KC smiled.

“He’s one of my collaborators,” KC said.

Thinking outside the organizational box

Sherwood said he met KC last year – both men know people at the Will County Center for Community Concerns – and struck up a mutual collaboration. KC said Sherwood drew his attention to a homeless family in Wal-Mart’s parking lot, whom KC was able to help.

On the other hand, when KC wanted to provide a homeless man with a bicycle so he could get to job interviews, he went to Sherwood.

“Boom! The next day I had a bike,” KC said.

KC said he’s learned quite a bit from Sherwood.

“He’s helped me understand some things about the homeless community,” KC said. “Steve is a good guy as far as that goes. And he’s got a wonderful ministry himself.”

Through working with Kids Hope USA, Gail began a mentoring program at Sator Sanchez Elementary School in Joliet, where many children live in poverty and in single-parent homes, Gail said.

Kids Hope USA connects one local church – in this case, Judson – with one local school, Gail said, in order to provide positive role models in children’s lives.

Each week, 17 mentors from Judson spend an hour with a child – each mentor with the same child every week. One husband and wife mentoring couple even developed a deeper relationship with the family of one of the children – despite a language barrier – to the point that the couple is considered their adopted grandparents, Gail said.

The program is making a huge difference, she said.

“I know some kids have moved up a grade level in math and a grade level in reading,” Gail said. “We took on one girl because she was kind of a bully, and she’s just flourishing in the program. She loves her mentor, and I think she is doing much better.”

Joliet woman makes rosaries for the cost of materials

JOLIET – Christine Merriman shared a poignant story related to one of her homemade rosaries, a special rosary Merriman made for a former co-worker who had delivered a stillborn baby.

Merriman added a baby block with the baby’s initial on it to the rosary.

Then she mailed the rosary to the woman with a card expressing her sympathy.

“It’s nice when you hear those stories. You feel a little connection to the rosary and to the family,” Merriman said. “It tugs on your heartstrings when you hear, ‘This is for my mom. Because Merriman personalizes each order, none will be for sale that day.

“A rosary is different than making a necklace,” Merriman said. “It’s more sentimental; it’s more personal.”

Each rosary from ABC Rosaries costs an estimated $65 to $75. Merriman charges only for materials, never for labor. She said she makes them with sterling silver and genuine stones, such as amethyst and Swarovski crystal. She then adds a simple cross – not a crucifix.

“It’s not ornate,” Merriman said.

“They say ‘simple is best.’ ” The sterling silver is the most expensive part of the rosary, which is why Merriman does not keep it in stock. Merriman made the decision to use sterling silver years ago when she began hosting rosary workshops for second-grade students preparing for their First Communion.

“I couldn’t use silver plate because of the lead,” Merriman said. “I didn’t want [the children] to have lead on their hands.”

Merriman began making rosaries about 11 years ago. The venture started as jewelry making, compliments of a friend, who brought Merriman to a bead shop in Naperville as a day for Merriman, whose second son, J.P. Merriman, 16, was 7 months old at the time.

In the past, Merriman had been a jewelry manager with Rogers and Hollands (10 years), David Nelson Jewelry (three years) and Service Merchandise (two years), before the company went

Despite her management experience, Merriman had never considered making jewelry.

“I was overwhelmed at the thousands of beads hanging on the wall, and my first thought was, ‘Is my newborn OK?’ ” Merriman said. “This was not what I wanted to be doing.”

But a woman working with a torch intrigued her. And Merriman heard the woman say, “You want to work with your favorite color.”

So Merriman picked out pink beads

and created her first necklace, which she still wears today.

“I still have that piece,” she said.

A few years later, Merriman made a rosary for her oldest son, Connor Merriman, now 19, when he was in the second grade and making his First Communion. That’s when Merriman had an idea. Perhaps other parents at the Cathedral of St. Raymond – where Merriman is a member – would like to help their children make their own rosaries, too.

So Merriman offered her first of many rosary workshops.

“I showed them how to lay them out and I took them home and finished them,” Merriman said. “And the kids got to bond with their moms.”

Merriman said she charged only for the materials and donated part of the proceeds to the cathedral’s religious education program. She wishes she had time to pray the rosary more often. But she knows someone who prays it daily – her mother-in-law, Pat Merriman, of Joliet.

“I made her an amethyst rosary,” Christine said. “She takes it with her every day to Mass.”

CREST HILL – The Catholic Campaign for Human Development is attempting to address the problem of poverty by providing grants to self-help programs initiated and led by poor people.

These groups help create sustainable jobs, preserve affordable housing, improve neighborhoods, and enhance opportunities for people so they can find a dignified way out of poverty. CCHD is funded by Catholics who generously give in a once-a-year collection at their parishes.

The Catholic Diocese of Joliet has CCHD grants available for qualified low-income grass roots organizations. Eligible groups must be working for empowerment of the poor, education for justice and/or solidarity between poor and non-poor in the community.

Organizations that receive CCHD funds must not participate in or promote activities that contradict the moral and social teachings of the Catholic Church.

More information about the grants and about groups funded in previous years can be obtained from www.dioceseofjoliet.org/cchd.

Applications will be accepted from groups in DuPage, Ford, Grundy, Iroquois, Kankakee, Kendall and Will counties through March 1.

Grants will be awarded regardless of race or religious affiliation.

Polio-like illness causes concern Dear Doctors: I’ve been reading about a new illness that’s a lot like polio and is making children in parts of the country very sick.

What is it, and should I be worried?

Dear Reader: You’re referring to acute flaccid myelitis, also known as AFM, a rare neurological disease that affects the spinal cord.

The symptoms mimic those of polio, which has helped to push AFM into the headlines.

Before we get into specifics, we want to stress AFM is quite rare. Despite the sudden spate of alarming news reports that have, quite understandably, caused you concern, the rate of infection is extremely low – one person per million. As of last November, there were 120 confirmed cases of AFM in the United States in 2016.

So what exactly is AFM? It’s a syndrome that can cause the muscles and reflexes in the body to stop working normally. Symptoms often arise quickly.

What begins as a fever or respiratory illness gives way to weakness in the limbs, including a possible loss of muscle tone.

In several reported cases, the first symptom in a child diagnosed with AFM was a sudden limp. Some patients have slurred speech or facial drooping. In the most serious cases, acute weakness in the muscles that control breathing has led to respiratory difficulties.

At this time, the causes of AFM are not fully understood. Officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suspect a range of viruses might be involved. These include West Nile virus, enteroviruses that enter the body through the intestines and adenoviruses, which can cause coldlike symptoms, including sore throat, bronchitis, pneumonia, diarrhea and pink eye.

Research into the causes of AFM, which affects children in greater numbers than adults, is a national priority. At the CDC, scientists and public health specialists are

The symptoms of AFM are similar to several other conditions that are far more common. This has increased the challenge of arriving at an accurate diagnosis. However, awareness of the disease among health care providers is growing rapidly, which means diagnosis and reporting are becoming more accurate.

If you believe you or your child has symptoms that correspond with those of AFM, call your family doctor. The findings from a careful examination of the nervous system, with accurate mapping of the muscles and reflexes affected, and diagnostic tests such as an MRI and analysis of the cerebrospinal fluid, will allow a correct diagnosis.

Several germs are suspected in AFM, so the CDC recommends your family is up-todate on polio and all other recommended vaccinations, and you protect yourself and your family from mosquito-borne viruses by using insect repellents.

The good news is increased awareness of AFM is leading to an ever-larger volume of reliable data for researchers to work with.

That means more information about what causes the disease, and more avenues in which to seek and find a cure.

In this deal, North should rebid either three hearts (which gives partner a chance to show three-card spade support or to bid three notrump with a club stopper) or three no-trump (which is the most likely game).

Note that if North is in three notrump, East will surely lead the club five, which gives declarer three tricks in the suit. He wins in hand, plays a diamond to the queen and ace, then returns a diamond toward his nine.

He cannot be defeated.

At the table, North raised three diamonds to four diamonds. South control-bid four hearts in case his partner was thinking about a slam, but North signed off in five diamonds.

West led the heart five: jack, queen, ace. If South had played the ace and another diamond, he could have survived. Instead, he played three rounds of clubs, ruffing the last on the board. Then he led the diamond nine to the queen and ace.

With perfect guesswork, declarer could have gotten home, but he understandably continued with a low diamond and lost three trump tricks to go down one.
