Joliet City Council candidates off to quick start after filing petitions Rialto, downtown tax extension criticized

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The campaign for Joliet City Council got off to a quick start this week, a possible sign of things to come with 15 candidates vying for three positions in the April election.

The Rialto Square Theatre controversy drew two candidates to make statements at the council meeting Tuesday.

On Thursday, another candidate issued a news release criticizing the expansion of a downtown business tax that the council approved this week.

All of the candidates for the April 4 election were in as of Monday, the last day to file petitions to get on the ballot.

Three citywide council at-large positions are up for election.

On Thursday, candidate Alex Rodriguez criticized the council for expanding the downtown Special Service Area “so we can add artificial turf to Silver Cross Field while gangs shoot at each other in broad daylight on Collins Street.”

On Tuesday morning, a 37-year-old man was shot in the leg in the 700 block of Collins Street, which is one of the streets to be included in the expanded Special Service Area.

Rodriguez previously had not opposed the Special Service Area extension, and he was not among the people who spoke on the issue during a public hearing held on the matter in October.

Rodriguez’s news release also mentioned the Rialto controversy, another indication that the fate of the theater likely is to be an issue in the campaign leading to the election.

Candidates Rachel Ventura and Larry Crawford spoke on the Rialto issue at the council meeting, where the theater’s request for $500,000 was up for consideration.

“Joliet needs a public relations facelift, and we must change our image,” Ventura said as part of a written statement to the council.

An advocate for attracting out-of-town spending to boost Joliet tax revenue, Ventura favored city funding for the Rialto.

Crawford did not take a stand on Rialto funding but did appear to criticize the way the public was treated on the matter, saying he felt “like the lion walking up to the Wizard of Oz” when he addressed the council.

With 15 names likely to be on the ballot, candidates will need to find ways to get noticed.

All three incumbents – Brooke Hernandez Brewer, Jan Quillman and Michael Turk – are in the race.

The other candidates are Don Dickinson, Christian Egwunwoke, R. Dale Evans, Diane M. Harris, Roger Powell Sr., Marc P. Ragusa, Nathaniel C. Romeo, Michelle Stiff and Betty J. Washington.

District 30-C board OKs levy, bond issuance

aschier@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – The Troy School District 30-C Board voted Wednesday to approve the district’s 2016 levy and issue more than $800,000 in bonds.

The board voted in favor of an estimated $46.1 million levy, Executive Director of Finance and Operations Elaine Colombo said. The levy includes $39.4 million in operations funding and $6.7 million in debt service funding.

All present voted yes on the measure.

The levy is a balloon levy with a rate of 4.3929 percent, Colombo said Thursday.

It is designed to capture the value of new properties, which can be taxed above the cap.

Colombo estimated the actual tax rate will fall between 4.1368 percent and 4.2181 percent.

by the board, the owner of a $200,000 home in District 30-C should expect to pay about $2,500 in property taxes, and likely will see his or her taxes range between remaining flat and increasing by as much as $52.

The levy is expected to generate about $42 million to $44 million for the district, Colombo said.

The board also voted Wednesday to issue $877,000 in health, life and safety bonds, Colombo said. All members present voted in favor.

The money will pay for tuck-pointing and roof projects to be done next summer at Troy Craughwell and Heritage Trail elementary schools.

The bonds will be paid back within three years using local revenue from the health, life and safety fund, Colombo said.

Department stores still going strong for gift seekers

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Shoppers at the Louis Joliet Mall braved the bitter cold during one of the busiest holiday shopping weekends that still saw many people searching for gifts at stores rather than online.

Traffic at the mall has been lower than last year because of the colder weather, said Sandy Maldonado-Martinez, the mall’s marketing director.

She said the mall was expecting a lot of people to stay home last weekend. Average temperatures during the weekend were between 6 degrees and 20 degrees, meteorologists said. But shoppers nevertheless came.

“Everyone just kind of did what they had to do,” Maldonado-Martinez said.

And even though online sales were heavier this year, she said people still were coming out to the mall to shop.

“They still like that brick-andmortar experience,” she said.

As the holiday season heads into a weekend with likely more frenzied, last-minute shopping, the Joliet mall and increasingly popular online retailers such as Amazon are offering deals to many of those who still are searching for gifts.

For those in a rush, the Joliet mall was expected to have gift-wrapping services provided by the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society of Joliet Junior College and Gamma Phi Omega of Lewis University on Thursday and Friday.

Amazon has expanded its Prime Now same-day delivery service by reaching 31 cities this year and catering to last-minute shoppers by offering a “Procrastinator’s Delight” program that will deliver products up until 11:59 p.m. Christmas Eve. An annual survey from the National Retail Federation showed that 52 percent of last-minute shoppers planned to buy their gifts online, and 42 percent planned to shop at department stores.

The survey also stated that 27 percent of shoppers planned to go to discount stores, 21 percent to clothing or accessories stores, 18 percent to electronic stores, 14 percent to local or small businesses and 13 percent to grocery or supermarket stores.

The NRF survey asked 6,890 consumers about their holiday shopping plans between Dec. 1 and 7.

Maldonado-Martinez said that at the Joliet mall, toys and electronics such as video game consoles seem to be the dominant items shoppers are seeking.

Clothes and outerwear also are selling strong this year because the weather is colder this year, she said, with boots and scarfs “flying off the shelves.”

Clothing or clothing accessories ranked at the top of items that consumers were shopping for, according to the NRF’s survey. Another trend in shopping this year is millennials – those born from the early 1980s through the 1990s – shopping more compared with last year.

Police seek suspect in Wilmington burglary More than $4,000 in prescription meds taken

The suspect in a burglary at Doc’s Drugs, 1101 S. Water St., Wilmington, appears Wednesday in a surveillance video. Police said the man stole more than $4,000 in prescription medications.

The HERALD–NEWS WILMINGTON – Police are seeking a man who broke into a Wilmington drugstore early Wednesday.

In just more than three minutes, the man pried open the rear door of Doc’s Drugs, 1101 S. Water St., and stole more than $4,000 in prescription medication, according to a Wilmington Police Department news release.

An alarm brought officers to the drugstore, but the suspect already had fled.

bstanley@shawmedia.com BRAIDWOOD – Braidwood’s former city administrator claims a one-time mayoral candidate threatened and harassed him, according to a new lawsuit.

Andrew Galatte is seeking more than $50,000 from Robert Snedeker for phone harassment and infliction of emotional distress, according to a lawsuit filed Dec. 16 in Will County Circuit Court.

Snedeker “has engaged in a series of blog postings, public comments and made various general and derogatory comments and allegations about the honesty and competence of [Galatte],” the lawsuit states.

On Dec. 15, 2015, Snedeker called Galatte and allegedly threatened to beat him up and called two weeks later to “put a bullet in [his] head.”

According to Herald-News files, Galatte was fired as city administrator in July 2010 by

then-Mayor Sue Grygiel, filed to run as city commissioner in 2011 and 2013, was appointed city administrator again in May 2015 and was fired again a year later.

On Thursday, Snedeker called the lawsuit “frivolous” but referred questions to his attorney.

Last month, Snedeker sued former City Administrator and Police Chief Rich Girot for degrading his character when Snedeker filed to run for mayor two years ago.

Snedeker claimed Girot used his access to law enforcement databases to run a background check that was not related to any criminal investigation.

At the Jan. 13, 2015, City Council meeting, Girot was asked by city attorney Scott Pyles about Snedeker ‘s eligibility to run for office because of his felony conviction. According to meeting minutes posted online, Girot said Snedeker received a twoyear sentence for delivery of drugs. Girot also said Snedeker had a Wisconsin driver’s license and was ineligible to run for mayor as a nonresident of Braidwood.

JOLIET – Police are asking the public to help identify a package thief who struck Wednesday.

The theft happened about 11 a.m. in the 900 block of Oneida Street in Joliet, according to Joliet Police Department Lt. Kevin LaBolle.

Neighbors told police that a man wearing a black winter coat, black sweatpants and a brown hat with a yellow design or writing went onto a porch and took a package that had just been delivered, LaBolle said.

The suspect was described as a black man in his late teens or early 20s. He was 5 feet, 10 inches tall, weighed about 130 pounds and had a goatee.

4 sentenced in N.Y. college student case Former Romeoville resident was victim of kidnapping The ASSOCIATED PRESS ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Four people convicted of charges stemming from the kidnapping and torture of two New York college students – one of whom is a former Romeoville resident – have been sentenced to prison.

The two men and two women were convicted last month of kidnapping two male University of Rochester students in December 2015.

Prosecutors said the victims, who were abused during a 40-hour ordeal, were mistakenly targeted for retribution for a drug-related robbery.

The victims were reported missing Dec.

5, 2015, and the incident ended the next day, when police determined the victims were being held in a house about 4 miles from campus, and a SWAT team was sent to rescue them, according to previous Associated Press reports.

One of the victims had been shot in the leg.

Previous reports said the students were repeatedly beaten, restrained and forced to surrender money, credit cards and personal identification numbers.

Lydell Strickland was sentenced Wednesday to 25 years to life. David Alcaraz-Ubiles was sentenced to 15 years to run consecutively with a 15-year sentence he’s serving for another crime.

Inalia Rolldan and Ruth Lora were sentenced to seven years in prison and five years of post-release supervision.

Five others charged in the case have taken plea deals.

Lockport police start program to help addicts

Shaw Media correspondent LOCKPORT – The Lockport Police Department is taking a step toward helping residents with heroin and other drug addiction problems find their way toward recovery.

Police Chief Terry Lemming announced Wednesday night that Jan. 1 will mark the first day of the department’s “Safe Passage Initiative,” a program in which law enforcement will help local addicts who are looking to get clean find treatment regardless of their health insurance status.

The program is part of a collaboration with the Lemont and Mokena police departments and is based on the one started in September 2015 by the Dixon police and Lee County sheriff’s departments, Lemming said at the Lockport City Council’s regular Committee of the Whole meeting.

Lemming, who also is president of the Illinois Drug Enforcement Officers Association, told committee members that the initiative not only will help victims of the disease but the community as a whole because “as sure as night follows day” drug addiction leads to criminal behavior such as theft and domestic abuse.

To achieve the effect, Lloyd constructed plywood boxes on the inside of his street-facing windows to form enclosures in which he placed such items as wrapped boxes, toys and even a dressedup mannequin.

He was happy with the way they turned out until the first night he displayed them, and they all fogged up. He realized it was because there was no heat going into them, so he cut holes in the backs of the boxes and ran pipes from his heating vents into the displays.

He and Vanessa also made a 48-inch wreath from pool noodles, tulle, ornaments and stars, and they put the same

CHANNAHON – Kornell Lloyd of Channahon always has enjoyed decorating the inside of his home for Christmas. A house-flipper by profession, interior design is a favorite hobby.

But as he was running out of new challenges for his holiday decorating this year, Lloyd decided to take to the outside of his house for the first time.

His wife, Vanessa, had been encouraging him to do just that for the past couple of years.

Next thing he knew, he got a call from the village of Channahon telling the newbie outdoor decorator that he had won first place in this year’s Channaholidays Holiday Home Decorating Contest.

“I’m excited about it,” Lloyd said of the recognition.

He had no intention of entering any competition when he began, he said, but his children told him about the contest and convinced him to enter.

Lloyd’s “decorations” are like nothing else in the village. They consist of large window displays in the style of the Christmas windows of downtown Chicago department stores.

The family’s white baby grand piano also is highlighted in the home’s front window, wrapped with a big ribbon and lit up from inside.

The contest’s second-place winner was George Howard, who has placed in previous competitions several times, including taking first one year.

“We get into the contest about every other year,” Howard said. “It’s always great to be recognized for your efforts.”

The judges particularly liked Howard’s “classic old-time lights.”

He’s been decorating his homes for Christmas since he lived in the Marycrest subdivision in Joliet 22 years ago.

Two homeowners tied for third place – Larry Kelm and Ariel dela Cruz.

“I’ve been decorating houses since I was growing up at home – for about 45 years,” Kelm said. “I inherited it from my mom. This was her favorite time of the year.”

Kelm said he has entered the contest several times, and this is the first time he placed. He said he has 8,000 to 9,000 LED lights in his decorations. His son helped him this year, but even so, he said he got a late start.

He normally has everything ready to turn on at Thanksgiving, but this year it was Dec. 1.

His favorite is the big Christmas tree in front that is draped from a flagpole, which is new to his decorations this year.

“I just loved the way that turned out,” he said.

Judges’ comments were, “Lights flash to music. All of the lights in the display match, and the side of the garage has a spirited Merry Christmas greeting.”

Channaholidays Holiday Home Decorating Contest second-place winnner Ariel dela Cruz said his children encouraged him to enter the contest, and they were excited to hear they had placed. Ariel and Amanda dela Cruz have four children, ages 12, 10, 6 and 5, and they help by putting the displays together in the garage and laying out the electrical cords in the yard.

“My favorite part is doing it with the kids,” he said. “We just love Christmas.”

“It keeps getting bigger every year,” Amanda said.

Judges’ comments included, “A Cubs fan favorite, with a “W” in white lights in the lawn. A snowman proudly displays a W flag, also.”

MILAN – Vogue Italia editor Franca Sozzani, who championed Italian fashion in the magazine she ran for 28 years, has died at age 66.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Phil Gagliano, who played for four different teams in a 12year major league baseball career, has died. He was 74.

Sturla Canale, an owner of Canale Funeral Directors in Memphis, Tennessee, confirmed Thursday that Gagliano died Tuesday of cardiac arrest at his home in Branson, Missouri. Canale Funeral Directors is handling Gagliano’s funeral arrangements.

Gagliano played for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1963-70. He later played for the Cubs (1970), Boston Red Sox (197172) and Cincinnati Reds (1973-74).

Gagliano batted .238 with 14 homers and 159 RBIs in 702 career games. He played in the 1967 and 1968 World Series with the Cardinals. Gagliano was a utility player who primarily played second base and third base.

Young mother from MTV’s ‘16 and Pregnant’ found dead

COATESVILLE, Pa. – A young mother who starred in the MTV show “16 and Pregnant” has died in suburban Philadelphia, a coroner confirmed.

Valerie Fairman, 23, died Wednesday, the Chester County Coroner’s Office said.

The cause of death remains under investigation. Police in Coatesville planned to release information on her death later Thursday.

Fairman had been arrested on theft and other charges in recent years and was ordered to inpatient drug or alcohol treatment earlier this year after a parole violation, court records show.

She was due in court in January after a Dec. 15 traffic stop that led to a resisting arrest charge. She was pronounced dead just before 5 p.m. Wednesday, the coroner’s office said.

CHICAGO – Jurors who deliberated Thursday for their first full day at the biggest street-gang trial in recent Chicago history head into the holidays facing the daunting task of sorting through months of evidence in a complex racketeering case against purported leaders of the South Side Hobos.

To convict, it won’t be enough for the 12 jurors to conclude the Hobos killed one government witness in front of his terrified stepchildren, robbed then-NBA player Bobby Simmons of his $200,000 diamond chain at gunpoint or committed multiple other crimes. They must find the six defendants coordinated their crimes within an organized criminal enterprise and shared their illicit profits.

News from across the state Illinois man sentenced in child porn, knife attack case

PEKIN – A central Illinois man has been sentenced to 32 years in prison for possessing child porn and trying to kill a man who prevented his knife-wielding assault on a room full of children in 2015.

Dustin Brown, 20, learned his punishment Wednesday after pleading guilty but mentally ill in November to possessing child porn, attempted murder and armed violence, the Pekin Daily Times reported.

Tazewell County Circuit Judge Paul Gilfillan said Brown’s mental conditions, including an intellect years behind his age, and sexual abuse he said he allegedly suffered as a child might have contributed to his actions, but that Brown understood they were criminal.

Two of the charges stemmed from his October 2015 attack when he entered the Morton Public Library with two knives, saying he was going to kill more than a dozen children. Army veteran James Vernon, then 75, was injured as he fought

If jurors enter guilty verdicts on racketeering conspiracy and decide the conspiracy included murders, they could go to prison for life.

But during his closing this week, Chester’s lawyer likened law enforcement to an archer who first shoots an arrow and then draws a target around wherever it lands.

“It was always a fix,” Beau Brindley said. “It was always a fraud.”

When Chester surprised courtroom observers by choosing to testify, he almost immediately addressed the issue of coordinated crimes. The 39-year-old promptly conceded he sold heroin, but asserted it was a one-man operation and that his co-defendants had nothing to do with his crimes and he had nothing to do with theirs. He also repeatedly insisted that the Hobos gang didn’t even exist – despite his full-arm tattoo that read, “Hobo: The Earth is Our Turf.”

The most chilling testimony involved the allegation that Poe, at Chester’s urging, killed gang associate-turned-informant Keith Daniels in 2013 days after Chester’s arrest and after Daniels testified to a grand jury. Prosecutors said Poe shot Dan-

iels over and over at close range as the man’s 4-year-old stepdaughter and 6-year-old stepson looked on.

Daniels’ girlfriend, Shanice Peatry, witnessed the shooting and testified that she immediately recognized Poe, although the defense questioned how she could have been so sure since the attacker wore a mask. Poe’s dreadlocks and a distinctive limp convinced her she identified him correctly, she said. Poe’s lawyer had him walk in front of the jury to demonstrate that Poe doesn’t limp.

In a video statement played to jurors, the boy described someone suddenly appearing and shooting through the family-car windows. He added, “I was covering my ears because the gunshots were too loud.”

Prosecutor Derek Owens told jurors during his closing argument that the killing of Daniels and others was meant as a message from the Hobos that, “You don’t snitch on the Hobos and think you’ll get away with it.”

Brown, managing to pin Brown onto a table and hold him until help arrived.

Brown told police that the children at the library had become targets of revenge after he was charged in February 2015 with 22 counts of possessing child pornography. Brown was free on bond when the incident at the library occurred.

Gilfillan said the community needs protection from someone “who commits fairly horrific crimes” that stem from disturbed fixations that will remain difficult to control.

Brown will be eligible to receive mental health treatment, but must serve his time in prison, Assistant State’s Attorney Kevin Johnson said previously. Time spent since the incident and good behavior could reduce Brown’s prison term to about 22 years. State law requires Brown to serve at least 85 percent of his total term.

The free rides have been sponsored by MillerCoors for several years. Organizers said it’s a safe travel option for people celebrating.

Riders shouldn’t use their fare cards during the free ride period because no refunds will be issued.

Last year, about 113,000 bus and train rides were taken during the hours of the promotion.

Last week at a news conference Ban praised Lincoln, calling him a “heroic force for equality, integration and reconciliation.”

Ban became leader of the United Nations in 2007. His successor is former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres, who takes over in January.

The Chicago Transit Authority announced Wednesday that free rides will begin at 10 p.m. Dec. 31 and run through 4 a.m. Jan. 1. The CTA will increase the frequency of service on some popular routes that night.

Outgoing U.N. leader praises Lincoln in Illinois

SPRINGFIELD – United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has traveled to Illinois in his final days in office.

The (Springfield) State-Journal Register reported the outgoing secretary-general stopped Wednesday at Abraham Lincoln’s tomb. He said Ban Ki-moon the 16th president “exemplified how a leader can inspire people to unite and reconcile and integrate.” While in Springfield, Ban also visited the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

Earlier Wednesday, he spoke at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. The (Decatur) Herald & Review reported he said his visit comes during “transition and uncertainty.”

Chicago police to take on ‘code of silence’ on the force

CHICAGO – Chicago’s police chief said the department will attack the “code of silence” by making it easier for officers to report police misconduct and by making it tougher on officers who harass those who do come forward.

In a Wednesday interview, Superintendent Eddie Johnson said in the coming months the department will provide a hotline for officers to report police misconduct. He also said a policy is being put in place in which officers who try to intimidate or ostracize those who come forward will face discipline and could be fired.

The release of a video showing a white police officer fatally shooting black teenager Laquan McDonald and the release of police reports in which officers’ accounts contradicted video accounts have shined a spotlight on the so-called “code of silence.”

The post-9/11 registration program for immigrant men arriving mainly from the Islamic world hasn’t been enforced since 2011.

Although it never prohibited travel for men and boys from the more than 20 affected countries, including Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, Trump’s suggestions about banning Muslim immigrants from the U.S. have led to fears that it could be reinstated and used for new and enhanced purposes.

Trump says U.S. should expand nuclear capability

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday abruptly called for the U.S. to “greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability” until the rest of the world “comes to its senses” regarding nuclear weapons.

His comments on Twitter came hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin said strengthening his country’s nuclear capabilities should be a chief military objective in the coming year. The president-elect’s statement also followed his meetings a day earlier with top Pentagon officials and defense contractors.

Trump, who is spending the holidays at his palatial private club in Florida, did not expand on the actions he wants the U.S. to take or say why he raised the issue Thursday.

Spokesman Jason Miller said the president-elect was referring to the threat of nuclear proliferation “particularly to and among terrorist organizations and unstable and rogue regimes.” Miller said Trump sees modernizing the nation’s deterrent capability “as a vital way to pursue peace through strength.”

If Trump were to seek an expansion of the nuclear stockpiles, it would mark a sharp shift in U.S. national security policy. President Barack Obama has made nuclear non-proliferation a centerpiece of his agenda, calling in 2009 for the U.S. to lead efforts to rid the world of nuclear weapons – a goal he acknowledged would not be accomplished quickly or easily.

Still, the U.S. has been moving forward on plans to upgrade its aging nuclear arsenal.

Earlier this year, Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said the Pentagon planned to spend $108 billion over the next five years to sustain and improve its nuclear force.

The U.S. and Russia hold the vast majority of the world’s nuclear weapons. In 2010, the two countries signed the New START treaty capping the number of nuclear warheads and missile launchers each country can possess.

The agreement is in effect until 2021 and can be extended for another five years.

Thomas Karako, senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said the last comprehensive review of the U.S. nuclear force – which was conducted during Obama’s first term – occurred against the backdrop of efforts to reset relations between Washington and Moscow. The relationship has since deteriorated, with Obama and Putin clashing over Russia’s provocations in Ukraine and support for Syrian President Bashar Assad.

“We need to candidly asses what the environment is and what the prospects are for Russian compliance with current treaties,” Karako said.

Trump has repeatedly called for closer relations with Russia and has spoken favorably about Putin. Democrats have questioned his ties to the Kremlin, particularly after U.S. intelligence officials assessed that Russia had interfered in the U.S. election on Trump’s behalf.

WASHINGTON – Top Senate Democrats are trying to put the brakes on President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet picks, insisting on extensive financial information on some of the wealthiest Americans before moving forward on nominations.

Frustrated by the slow response of billionaires and multimillionaires to their request, 16 Democrats delivered an ultimatum Thursday, saying no committee should vote on a nominee until the individual has cleared an FBI background check, provided a financial report and an ethics agreement with the Office of Government Ethics, and responded to “reasonable requests for additional information” such as tax returns.

“The United States Senate has a rich, bipartisan tradition of vetting nominees to the president’s Cabinet,” said New York Sen. Chuck Schumer, the incoming Democratic leader. “We hope to continue that tradition with our colleagues in the Republican majority because the American people are entitled to a fair and open consideration process for all executive nom-

inations.”

Republicans controlling the Senate, led by Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, want to make quick work of Cabinet confirmations once Trump takes office Jan. 20.

Democrats have limited options to block nominees outright because they changed filibuster rules when they controlled the Senate in 2013, and Cabinet nominees can win approval on a simple majority vote. Republicans will hold a 52-48 advantage next year.

However, Democrats could drag out the process in committee or force longer Senate debates than usual.

“President-elect Trump refused to release his tax returns and will start his presidency consumed by questions about how he could be using his position to enrich himself and his family, but that doesn’t mean that his nominees should be held to the same low standards,” said Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash.

Transition officials did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

Trump’s choice of Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson for secretary of state touched off an escalating fight Thursday between the top Republican and Democrat on the Foreign Rela-

tions Committee, the panel that will vote on the multimillionaire’s nomination.

Sen. Bob Corker, the committee chairman, complained that Democrats are asking for disclosures not demanded of previous nominees, including wealthy people such as Secretary of State John Kerry.

“This is being driven by the election,” Corker, R-Tenn., told The Associated Press. “The fact that Donald Trump did not provide tax returns is driving all that is being done.”

In fact, Kerry, a former Massachusetts senator, had to file an annual financial disclosure report, and he released 20 years of tax returns when he ran for president in 2004.

In a letter to colleagues, Sen. Ben Cardin, the panel’s top Democrat, said he asked the Trump transition team for three years’ worth of tax returns because Tillerson was “actively engaged with many foreign governments” at Exxon Mobil. Cardin said Tillerson “promised to provide” the tax information in response to a question on a standard questionnaire that all nominees submit before appearing before the committee.

“Senator Corker and I have a dis-

agreement about the need to review the nominee’s tax returns,” Cardin said. “I think it is an important part of vetting this candidate because he has never made public disclosures of this type, as he has worked at Exxon Mobil for his entire career and has never been in public service.”

Corker quickly responded with a statement saying the GOP-controlled committee never officially asked for the tax returns and insisted that Tillerson was ahead of schedule in providing information to the committee.

The issue has the potential to produce a major political battle in the opening days of Trump’s administration. In addition to Tillerson, Trump has tapped Steve Mnuchin, a former Goldman Sachs executive, for treasury secretary, and Betsy DeVos, daughter of the Amway co-founder, for education secretary.

Corker said it is not the practice of his committee to request tax information.

“We’re going to operate exactly the same way that we’ve been operating the 10 years that I’ve been on the committee,” Corker added. “We’ve never asked for tax returns. It’s not what we do on our committee.”

BEIRUT – The Syrian government took full control of Aleppo on Thursday for the first time in four years after the last opposition fighters and civilians were bused out of war-ravaged eastern districts, sealing the end of the rebellion’s most important stronghold.

The evacuations ended a brutal chapter in Syria’s nearly six-year civil war, allowing President Bashar Assad to regain full authority over the country’s largest city and former commercial powerhouse. It marked his most significant victory since an uprising against his family’s four-decade rule began in 2011.

The announcement was made via an army statement broadcast on Syrian state TV shortly after the last four buses carrying fighters left through the Ramousseh crossing.

“Thanks to the blood of our heroic martyrs, the heroic deeds and sacrifices of our armed forces and the allied forces, and the steadfastness of our people, the General Command of the Army and the Armed Forces announces the return of security and stability to Aleppo,” an army general said in the statement.

Kirk scores 34 in Tigers’ win

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Teyvion Kirk sat frustrated on the bench with foul trouble in the third quarter of Thursday’s Southwest Prairie Conference game between Joliet West and Romeoville.

Thanks to 15 first-half points from the Tiger senior, West built up a 20-point advantage early in that period only to see the Spartans storm back to grab a 41-40 lead with eight minutes left.

So what did Kirk do on his return to the court? He tossed in four more points in the final quarter than he had collected through the initial three periods. His 34-point outburst helped the Tigers respond to the Spartans’ threat and capture a 72-60 victory on the west side.

“The foul trouble frustrated me, the team and the coaches,” Kirk said. “I have to be on the floor to help my team, and I feel like I let them down in the third when they went on a big run. But as a senior, I have a lot of composure so coming into the fourth, I knew I just had to be effective to help my team.

We couldn’t be complacent, we had to throw a punch back at them.

“I stay in attack mode, which is something that I learned over the summer. I have to be aggressive to open up things, not just for myself but for my teammates. Even though we were up 20 at halftime, we knew that they weren’t going to give in to us, so we expected them to go on a run. Basketball is a game of runs, and everyone’s good for at least one, so we just had to fight back. We’re just going to use this win as momentum as we go to Pontiac.”

Destin Whitaker scored seven of his eight points in the third quarter while Robert Johnson scored six of his 10 points in that period. The Spartans were led by DeAndre Heckard and Dontia Johnson, who both scored 13

points, while Mike Salter added seven points.

“We challenged our guys at halftime and let them know that we thought we were missing some gimmes around the basket,” Spartans coach Marc Howard said. “We let them know that we weren’t doing a good job of containing their attack down the middle, and we made an adjustment and also started putting the ball in the basket, so I’m very proud of our guys.

“We made some crucial turnovers

at the beginning of the fourth, and that put us in a bad way. But that’s a very experienced team in Joliet West that was a supersectional team. Kirk is a special kid. I’ve seen him play since he was a young man, and his game has improved as has his confidence and poise.

I tell our kids that we’re trying to play at the level of a team like Joliet West, so this was a good learning experience for us.”

Holiday tournaments bring back memories VIEWS Curt Herron

Every season when we get to this time of the year, it’s easy to think about some of the great memories that I’ve had of watching holiday tournaments in basketball and wrestling.

The holiday tournament has its roots in Illinois, with the first ones held in the mid-1920s. And the oldest one that’s still in existence, Pontiac, is on the must-see list for every sports fan.

While Pontiac claims it’s the original holiday tournament, it actually was among the earliest. But Pontiac’s rich history certainly can’t be denied, as the school will be hosting its 86th tournament next week.

I remember watching my first Pontiac Holiday tournament in 1981.

Defending state champion Quincy defeated Peoria Manual for the title that year. It was an era when legendary coaches such as Lockport’s Bob Basarich, Manual’s Dick Van Scyoc, West Aurora’s Gordie Kerkman and Quincy’s Jerry Leggett only added to the special atmosphere of the event.

Like many fans from Lockport, my brother and I attended the tournament for years. In the early years we’d scramble down to the ticket office when we knew that a win was assured in order to get tickets for the next game. For a few years, we had season tickets to all games.

When remembering Pontiac trips, thoughts of the matchup between Joliet Township and Lockport in the 2001 title game, the Illinois map with the flashing lights for schools still alive and being unable to open a frozen door at the Palamar Motel on Route 66 come to mind.

My other favorite boys tournament was the old Lemont Christmas Classic.

It was the best deal in town since you could pay $3 and watch all eight games, if you wished to, and I did on several occasions.

Lemont was the classic story of the large schools against the small schools. The tournament, which ran for 33 years, matched up the large and small on the final day of each competition, and the small squads more than held their own throughout the years.

R.J. Drazkowski and John Jones came up with a great tournament concept, and it enjoyed a successful run.

I have to admit, because I attended so many boys tournaments over the years, I didn’t see as many girls holiday tournaments, although I’ve always enjoyed Lincoln-Way’s Medieval Classic, which also was an event featuring boys and girls teams at one time.

Thanks to contributions from all types of businesses in Frankfort and Mokena, there was a time when this tournament’s hospitality room couldn’t be matched.

The other holiday tournaments that I will always recall fondly are two that I attended on a regular basis that involved wrestling.

I saw my first Al Dvorak Memori-

al Tournament at its original home, Glenbard East, and then followed it to a brief stint at Dundee-Crown and now a long run at Harlem in Machesney Park.

There was a time when this event was not regarded as the best in Illinois, but also one of the top events in the country. I first started watching Mike Zbacnik’s Plainfield teams in the event and then Keith Healy’s Providence teams, who were always in the mix, and also Lockport, which eventually became a force under the guidance of Joe Williams and Josh Oster.

Some of the most exciting matches that I’ve ever witnessed during the regular season were at the Dvorak, including one in which Lockport’s Luke Roth upset St. Rita’s eventual four-time state champion Albert White in the title match.

And the other holiday tradition for me was at Palatine’s Al Berman

Classic. You know the event had a special touch to it when the namesake would watch the action next to the scorer’s table and hand out awards for nearly all of the years that I attended the event.

When I first started covering Mark Ruettiger’s Lincoln-Way Central teams there, it was quite possible to see two athletes from the same school meeting for a title. The competition got much tougher as time went on, but the tournament always maintained a family atmosphere.

I enjoy covering high school athletics year-round, but there are certain times of the season when special competitions take place that stand out over many others. The holiday tournaments in these sports that are underway or about to get started are among those.

SUBMITTED REPORTS JOLIET – The popularity of the Chicago Cubs – recently retired catcher David Ross in particular – is unquestionable.

University of St. Francis director of athletics Dave Laketa has been working on lining up Ross as the guest speaker for the annual USF Brown & Gold Night, the major fundraiser for the school’s athletic programs.

He received confirmation late Wednesday that it was a go with Ross and posted the announcement on the school’s website Thursday morning.

Within five hours, the event, sched-

uled for Jan. 12 in the Sullivan Center on campus, was a sellout.

“I knew it would be popular,” Laketa said. “I just didn’t know it would be that popular.”

Ross completed a 15-year major league career that included stints with seven teams.

He was an integral part of world championships with the 2013 Red Sox and, of course, the 2016 Cubs.

He was highly respected in the Cubs’ clubhouse and hit key home runs this past season in the National League Division Series against the Giants and the World Series against the Indians.

Area girls teams play over holidays

cherron@shawmedia.com Many of the area’s girls basketball teams will tip off holiday tournament play beginning Monday, but several squads have already either played in an event or are finishing one this weekend.

Joliet West wrapped up play in the Oak Lawn Tournament last Saturday, where it fell to Sandburg in the finals to claim second place.

Lincoln-Way West and Morris are competing in the Ottawa Classic.

West has two games in the gold bracket on Saturday while Morris plays for either first or third in the silver bracket, also on Saturday. Ottawa and Kaneland also are in the gold bracket semifinals.

The only local tournament that remains, as well as the girls competition with the most area squads participating, begins play Monday.

Lincoln-Way East’s Medieval Classic has pool play from Monday through Wednesday with place games set for Thursday.

Andrew, Oak Forest and Providence Catholic are in Pool A, along with the host Griffins, while Lincoln-Way Central, Minooka and Peo-

tone join Reavis in Pool B in the eightteam event.

Monday’s matchups in the tournament are Lincoln-Way Central meets Peotone at 11 a.m., Minooka faces Reavis at 12:30 p.m., Andrew and Oak Forest square off at 2 p.m., and East plays Providence at 3:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, Lincoln-Way Central and Reavis meet at 11 a.m., Minooka takes on Peotone at 12:30 p.m., East plays Andrew at 2 p.m. and Oak Forest faces Providence at 3:30 p.m.

Wednesday’s schedule sees Peotone meeting Reavis at 11 a.m., Lincoln-Way Central plays Minooka at 12:30 p.m., Andrew and Providence square off at 2 p.m. while the host Griffins take on Oak Forest at 3:30 p.m.

Once the finishes in pool play are determined, the respective squads will meet up Thursday at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. before the championship is held at 4 p.m.

Also getting underway on Monday is the Hillcrest Holiday Classic, which takes place in Country Club Hills, and which again features Lockport and Joliet Catholic Academy.

And Plainfield North will take part in the Saint Viator Tournament, which also tips off Monday in Arling-

ton Heights.

Several more area squads open up tournament play Tuesday, when events at Lisle, Momence, Nazareth Academy, Oswego East, St. Bede and the State Farm Classic begin.

Coal City and Reed-Custer will be in the Lisle Classic, Gardner-South Wilmington and Wilmington will play in the Momence Tournament, and Seneca will be at the St. Bede Classic.

Joliet Central, Lemont and Plainfield Central will all take part in the Oswego East Classic, while Lincoln-Way West bounces back from its tournament play at Ottawa with a trip to the Nazareth Academy Tournament in LaGrange Park, where it will be joined by Plainfield East.

Also beginning tournament play Tuesday is Plainfield South, which will compete along with its boys team at the State Farm Classic in Bloomington-Normal.

The most interesting road trip over the holidays involves Bolingbrook, which opens up play in its competition Thursday.

The Raiders travel to Naples, Florida, to compete in the Naples Holiday Shootout, where they’ll be joined by teams from nine states and one province in Canada.

EVANSTON – Scottie Lindsey had 19 points, Isiah Brown added 12 and Northwestern overcame a sluggish first half for a 72-63 victory over Houston Baptist on Thursday night.

Sanjay Lumpkin and Vic Law had 11 points apiece as the Wildcats (11-2) won their eighth straight game.

“Certainly, I feel fortunate with the outcome; we had a lot of things going against us there tonight,” Northwestern coach Chris Collins said. “The thing I was proud of at halftime was we didn’t panic. What we tried to talk about was there was still 20 minutes to play.”

Colter Lasher and Atif Russell had 13 points apiece for HBU (4-6).

“It was a tale of two halves,” Huskies coach Ron Cottrell said. “All of a sudden in the second half, they’re controlling the offensive glass and getting second and third opportunities. That was what was really making it tough on us on the defensive end.

“On the offensive end, we were really just having a hard time scoring.

Their defense was very, very good in the second half.”

Before Thursday, HBU had allowed opponents to shoot a blistering 48.7 percent from the field, but Northwestern made only 8 of 30 (26.7 percent) first-half shots. Lindsey, Law and Bryant McIntosh – the Wildcats’ top three scorers – were a combined 4-for-23 before the break.

HBU, which led by as many as 12 points, took a 35-25 halftime lead.

Washington features potent passing game

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com LAKE FOREST – Cornerbacks discuss having a short memory, and that’s especially important for a Bears secondary when the last play it had was giving up a 60-yarder from Aaron Rodgers to Jordy Nelson.

It also will help them get ready for Christmas Eve, when that secondary has to face Washington’s second-ranked passing offense.

“They have a talented group,” cornerback Tracy Porter said. “You have DeSean [Jackson], you have Pierre [Garcon], you have Jordan [Reed], you have the young guy [Jamison] Crowder. So we have a task set up for us.”

Jackson, Crowder and Garcon each have gone more than 800 yards receiving this season; then add in Reed (646 yards) and Vernon Davis (521 yards), and quarterback Kirk Cousins isn’t short on weapons. Coverage hasn’t been a major issue for the Bears’ young secondary, but the group still has struggled mightily to force a turnover with a league-low 10 takeaways.

“We have to do a better job on the back end of attacking the ball when it’s in the air, making plays on the ball when it’s in the air,” Porter said. “We do a decent job for the most part, but we want to do that more often. We have to do that.

It’s just simple and plain.”

To help the secondary, the Bears will have to keep up a pass rush that is third in the NFL in sacks per pass attempt, but outside linebacker Leonard Floyd knows that Washington’s offensive line

provides a challenge.

“They have pretty good tackles on both sides,” the rookie said. “They’re physical, come off the ball pretty physical. It’ll be a good matchup. I can’t wait for it.”

Washington is the third-best team in the NFL at protecting the quarterback.

“It’s very important to get pressure to get [Cousins] off his spot, get him to get out of the pocket to make throws he’s not used to making outside the pocket,” said Floyd, who added that he expects to be used in coverage Saturday more than he has this season.

High effort continues: The last four Bears losses have come by a combined 18 points, with all of those games coming against teams in the playoff hunt heading into Week 16. The team isn’t pleased about the record, but there is a sense of pride in the way the Bears have fought in the fourth quarters of these losses.

“There are no moral victories. Let’s make that clear,” coach John Fox said.

“But I think when things aren’t going well, it’s a small fraternity of people.

Players. Coaches. Everybody who does it for a living. I think there’s a pride and respect that guys watch video every single play. Different angles. So I think I’ve been proud of the way we’ve given our effort and the focus, and how they’ve stuck together.”

Injury update: Eddie Goldman (ankle), Eric Kush (concussion) and Bryce Callahan (knee) did not practice. Backup quarterback David Fales (thumb) was among the Bears limited. The team will announce its game status Friday afternoon.

When you’ve overcome injuries like the Blackhawks this season, what’s one more game without two key players?

The wheel of injuries keeps spinning for the Hawks, who will get Corey Crawford back Friday against the Colorado Avalanche – but won’t have Marian Hossa or Artem Anisimov.

It’s par for the course, as the Hawks have risen to the top of the NHL with 48 points amid a multitude of ailments thus far.

“You learn a little bit about your players,” coach Joel Queneville said after practice Thursday at the United Center. “You learn about your team, as well. I think that’s helped us out as we’ve gone through this, and some of the tests have been passed in a good way.”

The Hawks have dealt with extended absences for Crawford (10 games), Jonathan Toews (9 games), Andrew Desjardins (13 games), Trevor van Riemsdyk (20 games) and Tyler Motte (five games).

Want a hippo for Christmas?

Here is the story of a girl who got one

The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – All a cute, curly haired 10-year-old girl named Gayla Peevey wanted for Christmas in 1953 was a hippopotamus.

And amazingly enough, after “I Want a Hippopotamus For Christmas” became the biggest hit song of that holiday season, she actually got one, a 700-pound baby named Matilda. She promptly donated it to the Oklahoma City Zoo, where it lived to be nearly 50, a ripe old age for hippos.

As for Peevey’s song, it may never die.

“That one just really took off, and it’s still going strong, stronger than ever. Sixty-three years later! Hard to believe,” Peevey, an ebullient woman of 73, said during a recent phone interview from her San Diego-area home.

So much so that it’s used as a cellphone ringtone these days, included on holiday ornaments and Christmas cards, and available for download on iTunes. It’s even featured in a U.S. Postal Service commercial in which the post office boasts it ships more online gifts, hippopotamuses included, than anybody.

Some people will tell you it’s an annoying ear worm, a tune with such silly lyrics and a melody so maddeningly memorable that it will play endlessly in your head every holiday season until New Year’s Day. But that’s part of its charm, said Tim Moore, iHeart Radio’s New Hampshire programming director who over the decades has played it plenty of times.

“It’s got the sound of an old-time recording,” Moore said. “It sounds dated. It sounds a little corny. But that’s the thing about it. Also, not to be discounted is its effect on children.”

Yes, definitely don’t discount that.

For years, Peevey has been hearing from schoolteachers around the world who tell her their students perform the song and can’t get enough of it.

“Over 15 years now we’ve done it, and I don’t think we’re stopping,” said Dana Caro, who directs the second-grade Christmas music program at a suburban Southern California school.

She leaves that to schoolchildren, ringtones, iTunes downloads and TV commercials that, to the 73-year-old singer’s amazement, keep the song in everyone’s head every Christmas season, whether they want it there or not.

Singer of “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas” said, but “Hippo” stays in the mix every year at Arcadia’s Longley Way Elementary School.

“Even in class today, we weren’t in rehearsal yet when one kid started singing it, and then they were all singing it,” added the teacher, who said it has a bounce and a cheeriness that kids love.

And who knows, singing it may actually get a kid a hippo. Unlikely, perhaps, but it did get one for Peevey.

Her hometown zoo, hippoless at the time, teamed with the local newspaper to encourage people to send in enough money to buy her one after she

debuted the song on television’s “The Ed Sullivan Show.”

Three thousand dollars later, Matilda arrived on Christmas Eve, a fitting gift for someone who would so enthusiastically declare, “No crocodiles, no rhinoceroses. I only like hippopotamuses. And hippopotamuses like me, too.”

Soon after, however, Peevey left her hippopotamus behind, moving to California.

She had been singing professionally for two years before recording “Hippo,” moving up from local watermelon festivals to radio shows and then a spot on television’s “Saturday Night Revue” hosted by Hoagy Carmichael.

But her hippo fame caught her off guard, and for months afterward she couldn’t move around Oklahoma City without being mobbed by fans. Her parents figured she’d blend in as just another “normal kid” in California while recording a few more songs.

None would have the impact of that first one, written by John Rox and per-

sonally selected for Peevey by Columbia Records’ legendary producer and A&R man Mitch Miller, who backed her with his orchestra.

She did resurface briefly in 1959 with “My Little Marine,” an aching teen ballad she’d written about her first crush. She recorded it under the name Jamie Horton, her manager not wanting people to dismiss it as another hippo song. It peaked at No. 84 on Billboard’s Hot 100.

“A hit but not a big hit,” she said.

“Certainly not a hit as big as the hippopotamus song.”

Soon after, she was off to college, then marriage and motherhood. Eventually she founded her own advertising agency, keeping her hand in music writing commercial jingles.

Retired and married for 53 years now, she still sings regularly in church.

“But not the hippo song,” Peevey said, laughing. “It’s not really a church song.”

Joliet chapter of DAR spreads joy in county The HERALD-NEWS JOLIET – The Louis Joliet Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution has been busy during the past two months helping spread Christmas joy throughout Will County.

For the past five years, the Louis Joliet Chapter’s November service project has been providing hats, mittens, gloves and scarves to the Will County Center for Community Concerns. This year, the chapter donated 85 hats, 10 scarves and 93 pairs of gloves and mittens.

Kris White, executive director of the Will County Center for Community Concerns, thanked the chapter and said the donations would be used in Christmas baskets donated to area families. The center provides coats, gloves and hats, food and gifts to more than 150 families each December, with more than 300 children receiving warm clothing.

The December meeting was a luncheon Dec. 3 at Syl’s Restaurant in Rockdale. Chapter members donated to two service projects – Toys for Tots and the Christmas tree decorations for the Manteno Veterans’ Home.

Member Bobbi Borbas took all the toys to the collection box at Life Fitness. They will be given to Will County children. Members also donated lights and ornaments for a Christmas tree at the Manteno Veterans’ Home.

Several Louis Joliet Chapter Members sang Christmas carols Dec. 6 at the Manteno Veterans’ Home. This is the second year. Last year, members learned the veterans’ home was looking for new Christmas trees, lights and ornaments. Regent Mary Erhardt brought the project to the chapter, and members were happy to help decorate the home.

JOLIET – Nicor Gas-AGL Resources EN Rapport group hosted an early Christmas party Dec. 9 for a select group of youth at the G.W. Buck Boys & Girls Club of Joliet.

The event began with a presentation from Officer D’Arcy and Officer Badertscher from the Joliet Police Department. After interacting with the kids and explaining the importance of relationships between the police and the community, the officers presented K-9 partner Bo to the kids. Bo showed off his impressive listening skills and stuck around to play with the members afterward.

Youth were then served pizza and

treats, played games and activities with Nicor representatives, and departed with Christmas gifts.

The event was organized by Darade Collins, a community relations and economic development manager from Nicor Gas. This is the second annual Boys & Girls Club Christmas party hosted by Nicor Gas. The Boys & Girls Club of Joliet is a United Way partner agency that serves youth ages 6 to 18. The club is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday after school, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. any day school is not in session.

LOCKPORT – More than 500 community members were able to enjoy the holiday sounds and spirit found at the annual LTHS Madrigal Dinners, which included a four-course meal, three ensembles and 25 songs.

About 56 LTHS performers participated in the annual event, which included three sold-out performances.

The event invited audiences to come ring in the holiday season with Renaissance flair. Those in attendance were treated to an evening of great food, beautiful music, hilarious comedy and a firm tug on the heartstrings.

Hours and hours were spent dec-

orating the East auditorium stage to look like an authentic Renaissance Hall so that as each audience member entered they were immediately transported back to 16th century England.

The audience was then greeted by royalty and peasants, pages and jesters, wenches and wizards, who provided not just a concert but a full interactive play in which the audience was expected to take part.

After two hours of music and merriment the evening concluded with our audiences being encircled by all performers and asked to join in singing “Silent Night” in the candlelit hall.

36 Monitor amount of rice cereal fed to infants Dear Doctor: I want to start feeding my baby solid food, but I read rice cereal is contaminated with arsenic. What should I do?

Dear Reader: Your concern is understandable. The inorganic form of arsenic, found throughout nature in both the soil and water, is highly carcinogenic – leading to an increased risk of bladder, skin and lung cancers. Areas with high levels of arsenic in the drinking water, such as Bangladesh, see higher rates of some cancers as a result.

In the United States, arsenic levels in drinking water are tightly regulated, which limits our overall risk from arsenic. That doesn’t mean we’re not exposed, however.

Inorganic arsenic still is prevalent in our environment, and organic arsenic, which is much less toxic, can be found in most plants and animals in small amounts.

Rice poses a particular risk, as it concentrates inorganic arsenic more than other types of foods do. That’s because rice is grown in stagnant water, which leads to conditions of low oxygen and allows arsenic to dissolve more easily into the water.

The rice plant then more readily absorbs the arsenic. In fact, the level of uptake is 10 times that of wheat or barley.

The amount of arsenic in rice depends on the type of rice and where it was grown.

Rice grown in California appears to have less arsenic then rice grown in Texas and Louisiana. Sushi rice and basmati rice have lower amounts of arsenic, while organic brown rice concentrates more arsenic.

Rice cereals traditionally have been used to transition infants from milk to more solid foods because, for the most part, rice is hypoallergenic and a good alternative for children with allergies or intolerance to wheat-based cereals. But no one wants to worry the foods meant to help children grow actually might be harming them.

To that end, the European Food Safety Authority has created the benchmark lower-dose limit, meaning the dose that would increase the risk of cancer by 1 percent.

Consuming more than two servings of rice cereal a day would equal this dose. So, if you are transitioning your child to solid foods and they’re consuming three or four servings of rice cereal a day, you should reassess your child’s diet. This is especially true if you feed your child organic brown rice.

A big caveat is the specific risk of cancer from rice consumption is not known.

Researchers have not studied the connection between rice consumption in infants and cancer. Although a study of 200,000 people, published in the International Journal of Cancer, found no link between rice consumption and cancer, infants can concentrate more arsenic due to their smaller size.

My sense is if you’re transitioning your child to solid foods, rice cereal at one to two servings a day should be fine. What may be better is to balance rice cereals with other types of cereals, such as barley cereal or oatmeal cereal. Even better than cereals can be foods such as bananas, egg yolks and puréed vegetables.

It may get a little messy, so be prepared.

In yesterday’s deal, South had to visualize an end-position in which he could make an apparently unavoidable loser evaporate when he forced an opponent to concede a ruff-andsluff. That deal did not require any luck. Today, though, not only must declarer visualize a winning distribution of the opposing hands, but he must also get lucky because that distribution is a priori unlikely. However, as Seal, an English singer-songwriter, said, “The harder you work ... and visualize something, the luckier you get.”

South is in four hearts. West leads the diamond 10. East takes two tricks in the suit, then shifts to the spade jack. How should declarer continue?

Strangely, three no-trump and four hearts are comparable contracts in that both can be made unless West leads a club at trick one.

Even after the diamond start, declarer seems to have four unavoidable losers: one heart (assuming the suit is splitting 3-2; if it is 4-1, the contract has no chance), two diamonds and one club. South cannot do anything about the red suits; how can he eliminate that club loser?

Declarer needs the defender with three trumps to have at most two clubs. There might be a little guesswork involved, but not here.

South takes the third trick, draws two rounds of trumps, then cashes the diamond queen (discarding a club from the board) and the black-suit winners. Finally, he casts adrift with a trump.

West wins and must return a spade or a diamond. Declarer ruffs in one hand and sluffs the remaining club from the other.
