Rialto Square Theatre defended at Joliet City Council meeting

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – One person spoke in defense of the Rialto Square Theatre at the Joliet City Council, saying it seems like the financially struggling theater is ready to turn a corner.

Manhattan resident Tim Shanahan urged city officials at Monday’s pre-council meeting for continued financial support.

His comments follows Mayor Bob O’Dekirk saying that money for the Rialto is not in the city’s 2017 budget.

The budget will be voted on Dec. 20.

Rialto officials have asked for $500,000, less than what they’ve received from city officials in the past. Disputes between the theater and the city have led to a possible end to funding, which has amounted to $9.1 million since 2005, O’Dekirk has said.

A public hearing on the budget was held at Monday’s pre-council meeting. No one spoke about the Rialto until the public comment portion, when Shanahan asked the city for support.

Manhattan resident Shanahan said the financial support the city provides is a gift but also an investment. He argued the theater has done what was requested by the city council and community and has new third-party management team.

For city officials to pull out at this point “would seem a shame when it seems like it’s ready to turn the corner,” he said.

“Please don’t leave us at this juncture.

Give us another year to see what we can do,” Shanahan said.

clear idea of Rialto’s finances and contended its debt is closer to $3 million. He said the city has been “very consistent” in agreeing it was not going to send the theater money without a clear idea of how it would be spent.

O’Dekirk still said Monday that there was no money in the budget for the Rialto.

He said city officials have set conditions for its support of the Rialto and the theater has not been cooperating with those conditions.

Some of those conditions concern personnel issues and accounting, he said.

Shanahan argued against criticisms of the Rialto’s impact on local restaurants. He said he spoke with one of the owners of the Chicago Street Pub when the Ronnie Milsap show appeared Friday at the Rialto.

He said the restaurant was packed enough that people had to be turned away and that the owner told him they likely received 10 percent of the attendance at the Rialto.

“To say that the restaurants don’t benefit is just inaccurate at best,” Shanahan said.

Students run food drives, gather winter clothes

fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – First-graders at Elizabeth Eichelberger Elementary School had a big box of gloves, mittens and hats waiting to be donated Friday.

The students spent time gathering items to keep other children warm during the winter months. Sarah Oprzedek, development director for the nonprofit United Way of Will County, came by to pick up the stuffed box of winter accessories.

“This is the time of year when people are cold and need some gloves and mittens. This is one way [the students] can help,” said their teacher, Michelle Monroe.

Schools across Will County are engaged in donation efforts and other volunteer activities during the holidays to help those in need. The activities include gathering canned food, socks and plastic bags, running toy drives and giving gifts and food baskets.

Monroe said the effort to gather winter wear was part of the Giving Tree project she does every year and it’s based on the book of the same name by author Shel Silverstein.

The book teaches children about unconditional giving and how the act can make the giver feel good.

“What we wanted to show with this project [is] no matter how small, any of us can help our friend,” Monroe said.

Many other Plainfield District 202 schools are doing a Giving Tree project or something similar, Tom Hernandez, Plainfield District 202 spokesman, wrote in an email. The Plainfield Central High School Parent Teacher Student Organization also is collecting monetary donations for its annual Christmas drive for needy families.

At Joliet Public Schools District 86, students at several elementary schools are gathering canned food.

Dirksen Junior High School students are collecting socks and Farragut Elementary School students are collecting plastic bags that are turned into mats for homeless people, wrote Sandy Zalewski, the district’s spokeswoman, in an email.

On Monday, students at Marycrest Early Childhood Center were dropping off food that will be donated to MorningStar Mission, a Joliet agency that helps struggling families.

Penny Greenwood, the school’s principal, said the school always does

community service and helps students understand they can help others.

She said the food drive is a perfect way for children to see they’re part of the community.

“It’s just a way for them to develop empathy and help others. … And see even little kids can make a big difference,” Greenwood said.

Students at Joliet Township High School District 204 reach out to the community with various fundraising efforts. At Joliet Central High School, students in the Presidents’ Club are sponsoring a food, toy, winter clothing and pet supply drive.

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – On Monday morning, Will County officials chosen by voters in the Nov. 8 election were sworn in to begin their terms.

Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr. was sworn in to an unprecedented fourth term in the position. Walsh said he was thankful to all constituents of Will County who maintained their faith in him as their county executive.

Four new members and 14 re-elected members were also sworn in, and the board announced its leadership for the next couple of years.

County Board Speaker Jim Moustis, R-Homer Glen, was voted unanimously by the board to continue in that role.

The county board decided to replace the titles Republican Caucus chairman and Democratic Caucus chairman with majority leader and minority leader, respectively. There are 16 Republicans on the board and 10 Democrats.

Chuck Maher, R-Naperville, was unanimously voted by Republicans on the board to continue in the role of majority leader.

Herb Brooks Jr., D-Joliet, was unanimously voted by fellow Democrats to continue in the role of minority leader.

Mike Fricilone, R-Homer Glen, was unanimously voted by Republicans as the majority whip.

The county board also approved its governance rules and procedures for the next two years.

Brooks and Staley-Ferry shared a suggestion to add to the rules before they were unanimously approved.

They asked Republican leaders to

confer with the minority leader or whip if there is an agenda item added at the last minute before a meeting so the minority party can have time to go over it and discuss it.

“As a practice, I do not change or add to the agenda,” Moustis said.

“Only at the request, generally, of the executive’s office, and it generally it

deals with a hire or a contract they’ve been working on that they’ve been unable to complete. So I don’t see the need for it.”

No motion was made on the matter.

County board assignments were also given on Monday with no major changes.

Joliet resident Don West ‘made a lot of dreams come true’

JOLIET – “He knew everybody.”

So said Jerry Shepich of his friend of 40 years, Don West.

West was the founder and executive director of the Joliet-based charitable organization Wish Upon a Star, which grants wishes for terminally ill children in Will and Grundy counties.

He died early Sunday from complications of lung cancer. He was 64.

Born in West Virginia, West grew up in Joliet, attended Joliet West High School and lived in the city his entire adult life. His son, Anthony “Booter” West, said Don gave everything he had to the local community.

Wish Upon a Star got its start 38 years ago, when Don organized a winter pickup softball charity event

to raise money for Ronald McDonald House Charities, Shepich said. Several years after that, Don decided to use the proceeds from the annual event to fulfill wishes for sick children.

“Everybody just embraced it,” Booter said.

Over the years, Wish Upon a Star has surprised young people with trips to Disney World and new computers, and helped them meet everyone from Billy Joel to Arnold Schwarzenegger to the pope.

“Don had a Rolodex bigger than the president’s,” Shepich said.

Before establishing Wish Upon a Star, Don worked as a paramedic. He was also a member of the Moose organization, the Old Timers Baseball Association of Will County and the South Side Civic Club, Shepich said.

Don loved baseball and golf.

His friends and family remembered him Monday as someone who was upbeat, outgoing, big-hearted and a jokester.

David Nelson, a friend of Don’s since they attended Joliet West together and a Wish Upon a Star board member, said he never once saw Don lose his temper.

“He made a lot of dreams come true,” Nelson said.

Visitation will be held 2 to 8 p.m.

Thursday at Blackburn-Giegerich-Sonntag Funeral Home, 1500 Black Road in Joliet. The funeral will take place 10 a.m. Friday at the same location.

Don is preceded in death by his son, Doni West. In addition to Booter, he is survived by Pippa Monte, his girlfriend, and Delle West, his former wife, to whom he was married for 32 years.

LOCAL BRIEFS Police: Man drives SUV into Joliet retention pond

JOLIET – An SUV on Sunday had to be pulled from a retention pond on Joliet’s west side. Joliet Police Department Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said Adrian Grait, 38, was driving a 2014 Jeep Cherokee east on Theodore Street approaching Caton Ridge Drive when the incident occurred. “[Grait] said he’d swerved to avoid hitting a small animal – possibly a coyote or fox – that had crossed into the road,” Gregory said.

The Cherokee continued off the road and into the pond. Grait was not injured. The Cherokee was removed by a towing company, and Grait was ticketed for improper lane use.

Snowplow damages New Lenox pizza parlor window

NEW LENOX – A wayward snowplow took out the front window of a New Lenox pizza parlor Sunday.

The crash happened at 5:18 p.m. at Lou Malnati’s, 2510 E. Lincoln Highway. No one was injured.

“The private snowplow was clearing the lot when the driver lost control,” New Lenox Police Department Deputy Chief Robert Pawlisz said. “It hit the glass, but

luckily missed the support frames.”

The crash also damaged glass panels the pizzeria shares with ATI Physical Therapy next door. Pawlisz said the restaurant was able to stay open while the window was taped up and boarded over for repairs.

No tickets were issued.

Police: Hit-and-run driver strikes porch of Joliet home

JOLIET – Police are seeking the hit-andrun driver who damaged a front porch Saturday night. The collision happened at 11:20 p.m. at a residence in the 700 block of John Street in Joliet. The city’s busiest street – Jefferson Street – curves to the south just before westbound traffic would otherwise continue into the yard.

“Witnesses reported a small white vehicle crashed into the porch and was then able to drive away and drove northbound on Raynor Avenue,” Joliet Police Department Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said.

No injuries were reported. Gregory said it appears the incident damaged the structure of the porch, which had to be taped off until a building inspector could be called out.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call police at 815-724-3010.

Relay for Life volunteer Karen Reihel took the reins and organized the event as a part of her team, Team Sunshine’s, contribution to the Relay for Life Grundy County, which will be held at Minooka Community High School Jan. 17, 2017. One hundred percent of the profits from the race will go toward the cause.

Advance registration brought 69 runners, but when registration opened at noon on Dec. 4, runners dressed in red and green tutus, Santa outfits, Santa shirts, elf costumes or some just wearing red and green flocked to Dock Rotz Tavern and by race time, over 100 runners took to the sidewalk down Ridge Road.

“I am so happy with the turnout even with the snow,” Reihel said.

MINOOKA – It began to look a lot like Christmas on Dec. 4 as quarter-sized snowflakes fell just after noon, but that didn’t stop over 100 dedicated runners at the Santa Dash Minooka.

Lori Quigley was no stranger to running races during the winter, so when the Santa Dash came to Minooka, the Braidwood resident texted her friends and created a team of 10.

“I have done the Santa Hustle race in Chicago, so when I saw this race close to home, I thought it would be fun and a great way to get into the holiday spirit,” Quigley said.

This Santa Dash was a brainstorm of Carrie Robinette, community manager for Relay for Life. Three years ago, she wanted to find fun way for people to support the American Cancer Society.

“Relay for Life is not for everyone because they don’t have the time to spend all year fundraising. I thought people can come and do a 5K and raise funds to support our mission at the American Cancer Society,” Robinette said. “We offer so many free services

“I’m super excited. I love running in the snow, I think it’s beautiful out right now,” Quigley said.

When a runner could be seen in the distance through the snow, Reihel and Robinette left the warm restaurant and stood at the finish line with medals made out of a Christmas ornament.

First to finish was Minooka resident Ryan Kelley, who had snow packed on his beard, eyelashes and hat.

“It’s not bad out there, it [the snow] left good cushion on the foot,” Kelley said.

After the run, Brian Egly, manager of Dock Rotz Tavern, offered free hot chocolate to the runners as well as free appetizer coupons.

“We wanted to help because the people organizing this are longtime regulars of ours, and it’s for a good cause,” Egly said. “I was thinking how funny too, the first snow of the year was on the day of the Santa Dash.”

Bolingbrook man charged after stealing car in Joliet

The theft happened at 3:57 a.m. in the 800 block of Francis Street, Joliet Police Department Deputy Chief Ed

The victim told police that she did not know Arreguin-Baruch and he did not have permission to take her pickup.

Arreguin-Baruch, of the 100 block of Jamestown Lane in Bolingbrook, was arrested and booked into the Will County Jail on a charge of auto theft.

Joliet Police Department Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said the crash happened at 12:27 a.m. Witnesses said the 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe was on Mall Loop Drive near the Super 8 Motel when the driver lost control, struck a light pole, overturned and rolled into a second light pole, Gregory said.

“A witness said the female was ejected from the Tahoe and a male crawled out of the wreckage,” Gregory said.

She enjoyed traveling, flower gardening, swimming and kayaking.

SPRINGFIELD – Susana Mendoza was sworn in as Illinois’ 10th comptroller Monday and immediately heard from the Republican governor about fighting a lawsuit from lawmakers demanding paychecks they haven’t seen since May. The Democrat takes office halfway through the term of the late Judy Baar Topinka facing a $10.4 billion pile of overdue bills because Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democratic leaders of the General Assembly have been unable to agree on a state budget plan for two years.

Republican Topinka, whose red suit – a gift from Topinka’s son – Mendoza wore for the inauguration, was re-elected comptroller in November 2014 but died unexpectedly a month later.

Mendoza beat the appointed successor, Leslie Munger, in a special election last month, after campaigning to continue Munger’s practice of putting paychecks for lawmakers in the queue with other bills until the budget stalemate is settled.

“This is going to be tough,” the 44-year-old former Chicago city clerk said after swearing fealty to the state Constitution on her friend Topinka’s personal Bible. “Keep me in your prayers, even, as I take on the greatest challenge of my life. It includes nearly $11 billion in unpaid bills, and that

Illinois officials bash idea to end cash-bond system

SPRINGFIELD – Several officials in central Illinois have said they don’t agree with the Cook County sheriff’s idea to abolish the state’s cash-bond system.

Under current state law, judges set bonds to ensure defendants show up for court and don’t pose a danger to the community, the State Journal-Register reported.

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said Illinois’ current system isn’t fair to low-level defendants who can’t afford to pay, and that it’s dangerous when defendants with violent backgrounds are freed until trial.

Judge sides with city in Chicago food truck lawsuit

CHICAGO – A Cook County circuit court judge has ruled against a Chicago food truck operator in a case involving city rules requiring mobile eateries to do business at least 200 feet from restaurants.

Judge Anna Helen Demacopoulos upheld the 200-foot rule Monday along with another rule requiring food trucks to use a city GPS tracking device.

Lawyers for Laura Pekarik, who has operated “Cupcakes for Courage” food truck for five years, had argued food truck owners have been hamstrung by the rules.

They said Monday that they plan to appeal the decision.

Their lawsuit argued that Chicago can’t protect restaurants from competition and that the tracking devices are an illegal search under the Illinois Constitution.

The judge said Monday that the law allows the city to strike a balance between competitive businesses.

Pro boxer Ed Brown dies after shooting in Chicago

CHICAGO – Managers said a professional boxer from Chicago died after he was shot in the head while returning from a midnight workout.

Ed “Bad Boy” Brown was shot early Saturday as he sat in a car in Chicago’s East Garfield Park neighborhood. Manager Michael Cericola told WGN-TV that the 25-year-old Brown died in a hospital Sunday afternoon.

Police said a silver vehicle pulled up alongside Brown’s parked car and someone inside fired shots hitting Brown and a 19-year-old woman. Brown was shot multiple times, including in the head. The woman was hit in the leg.

Brown’s mother was one of 21 people crushed to death in a stairwell in a 2003 Chicago nightclub disaster. ESPN.com said Brown was a fast-rising welterweight who turned pro in 2012.

Colleagues describe artist colony founder as callous

SAN FRANCISCO – The founder of a ramshackle Oakland artists’ colony where dozens of people burned to death saw himself as a kind of guru and loved to surround himself with followers but showed chilling disregard for their well-being, according to relatives, neighbors and acquaintances.

Derick Ion Almena, 46, leased and operated the cluttered warehouse where fire erupted Friday night during a dance party, leaving at least 36 people dead in the nation’s most lethal building fire in more than a decade. In his first interview since the fire, Almena told San Jose TV station KNTV that he felt himself to be like a grandfather to all the young artists who had lived in the warehouse with his family.

Neighbors and occupants of the building said he had illegally carved it into rented living and studio space for artists, calling it the Satya Yuga collective. On Monday, prosecutors watched over the scene to preserve evidence as bodies were pulled from the blackened ruins. Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O’Malley said that if prosecutors believe criminal charges are warranted, charges could range from involuntary manslaughter to murder.

Acquaintances painted a devastating portrait of Almena and his longtime partner, Micah Allison.

“Honestly, I don’t think he is capable of feeling any kind of remorse or guilt,” said Allison’s father, Michael Allison of Portland, Oregon.

“I’ve never seen him ever really care about anyone else.”

He described the couple as users of meth-

amphetamine, heroin and crack and said their three young children were taken away from them by social service authorities for several months beginning last year. The youngsters were found hungry, infested with lice and illclothed, he said.

Michael Allison recalled Almena and Micah overcome with laughter once when they told of a fire-breather accidentally setting himself on fire at one of their many parties at the building, which was widely known as the Ghost Ship.

Almena “surrounds himself with people who are going to treat him like he’s some sort of guru,” said Danielle Boudreaux, who said she was a friend of the couple for eight years. “He enjoyed having minions around to do his tasks for him and help build this great – he thinks he’s building this artistic empire.”

On Monday, Almena said the couple was sorry for all those who lost loved ones in the fire.

“I gladly would give my entire life of fortune, of wealth of experience again and again and again, and I say this to you and I say this to the camera and to whoever is watching me that I surrender everything,” Almena said, with Micah Allison by his side.

In a Facebook post hours after the fire, he made no mention of the deaths, drawing criticism online and from people who knew him for perceived callousness. “Everything I worked so hard for is gone,” he wrote then, while noting that his partner and their children had been safe at a hotel during the blaze.

Survivors recounted having to struggle to escape the burning warehouse, where many of the victims were on a makeshift second floor served by a rickety staircase of wooden pallets.

This clearly refers to most members of Congress and 90 percent of the 19,100 professional lobbyists who give advice to Congress.

And a Catholic priest with whom I used to play a monthly chess game offered the following passage from the book of Jeremiah: “They have held fast to deceit, they have refused to return. ... They do not speak honestly; no one repents of wickedness, saying, What have I done!” They are the cretins in Congress, the 14,800 registered lobbyists and the 4,300 nonregistered lobbyists.

On Jan. 21, 2010, the Supreme Court handed down a decision that

reshaped the business of politics.

Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission opened the floodgates to campaign spending. The justices ruled that political spending (limitless contributions by corporations) is protected as free speech under the First Amendment. So we have the best government money can buy.

Some call this phenomenon in social economics “trickle-down evil.” It reminds us that evil begins at the top (the administration and Congress), filters down by imitation and gravity to the corporate world and then goes lower.

The Citizens United decision offers enormous latitude while setting the tone for the future. That’s why Brian Moynihan of Bank of America, Lloyd Blankfein of Goldman Sachs, Jon Corzine of MF Global and Heather Bresch of Mylan will never spend a day in jail; they just smirk and give us the finger.

If these CEOs fail to grow revenues, earnings and dividends, then the evil they do and encourage will keep them employed till they get caught.

Amazon setting sights on food industry with checkout free store The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – Amazon is testing a grocery store model in Seattle that works without checkout lines.

Called Amazon Go, shoppers scan their Amazon app when they enter the store, and then sensors register items that shoppers pick up and automatically charge them to the Amazon app.

If a shopper puts the item back, they aren’t charged.

The store offers ready-to-eat meals, staples such as bread and milk, and meal-making kits.

The store is in testing and is open to Amazon employees on a trial run. It is expected to open to the public in early 2017.

The e-commerce powerhouse has also been dipping its toe into the physical realm. It has opened three bookstores in California, Oregon and Washington with traditional

checkouts. Two more are in the works in Illinois and Massachusetts.

Cowen & Co. analyst John Blackledge says the new grocery store is just one way that Amazon has been setting its sights on the food and beverage category, a lucrative $795 billion market. It also offers grocery delivery in some markets and Prime Now for last-minute items delivered in one or two hours.

“We are encouraged by Amazon’s growing footprint in this category, which we see as ripe for potential disruption given younger demos increasingly purchasing food and beverage grocery items via digital channels,” Blackledge said.

Amazon.com Inc. shares rose $18.69, or 2.5 percent, to $759.03 in afternoon trading Monday. Its shares are up almost 13 percent since a year ago.

He also felt he had a successor on staff, ready to take the reins.

Joliet Catholic Academy, the alltime leader in state football championships, has a new head coach as Jake Jaworski was announced Monday as Sharp’s successor.

Sharp, a 1974 Joliet Catholic graduate who returned to the school as the football coach in 1997 after spending four years as Minooka’s head coach, is stepping down as football coach but will remain the JCA athletic director.

Jaworski, the pitching coach for Hilltoppers baseball coach Jared Voss, will remain in that capacity for the 2017 spring season and will give up baseball after that.

“I was pretty well set to step down at the end of last season,” said Sharp, 60. “I have been in coaching for 39 years, and Jake was ready then. We had a great team and made a great run [losing to eventual state champion Nazareth, 35-21, in the quarterfinals], and I was exhausted at the end of the season.

“But we were losing so many players [to graduation] and with what we had coming up, this didn’t seem to be a good transition year. It wouldn’t be fair to a new coach, so I stayed another year.”

Sharp said he was not expecting anywhere near the 1-8 season that happened this fall. Regardless, “this will make it easier for Jake,” he said. “He’s ready at any time.”

He attended Illinois, where he served as the football team manager until graduating in 2005.

He then returned to JCA as a teacher and coach. He is the department chairman for physical education and has been in the football program the last 11 years, the last four as the varsity defensive coordinator.

“I want to thank Dan [Sharp], who

took a shot on me as a 22-year-old kid straight out of college,” Jaworski said.

“I’ve always had a lot of respect for Dan and the staff he put together. I tried to be like a sponge around all those guys.

“This is a day filled with mixed emotions for me. I’m excited and honored, but at the same time, it’s a sad day with Dan stepping aside. I played here for four years and have coached on his staff for 11 years. He is a guy I will lean on a lot.”

The Hilltoppers have won 13 state titles in all, six under Sharp. That included the run of five championships in six seasons between 1999 and 2004.

Jaworski played safety on the 2000 and 2001 state championship teams. JCA won a 2007 title with Jaworski on staff, and he was the pitching coach on the school’s 2013 state championship baseball team.

“I’m very proud of the double wing,” Sharp said. “It worked here because everyone has a blocking assignment on every play, and we have had the guys who are willing to work as a team and not worry about individual accomplishments. We get the blue-collar kids who are eager to win as a team. That works well in our system.”

Jaworski said he may add a few tweaks but does not foresee wholesale changes to JCA’s time-proven approach. Although the Hilltoppers’ defensive coordinator the last four seasons, Jaworski was an offensive assistant his first four seasons with the varsity.

“That was a tough job,” he said, smiling. “I’m coaching running backs and we have Ty Isaac, Josh Ferguson, Mailin Jones and Tyler Reitz.”

Sharp said he will miss most aspects of a football coach’s existence but added, “I’m not going to miss the anxiety on Friday when you have a game Friday night. [Cubs manager] Joe Maddon said, ‘Don’t let the pressure overtake the pleasure.’ That was getting harder to do.”

Now that becomes Jaworski’s concern.

“I echo what Dan said about Jake,”

Budz said. “He is a great character builder of young men and women. He is a very intelligent person. Just like Dan always does, he never puts himself first. It’s always about the kids. It’s what these guys do outside the sport that makes them what they are as coaches.

“Our football players come back here, and they have the same work ethic and character in their business lives that they had as players. The wins will come. We don’t worry about that.

I have no doubt I’ll be saying the same things about Jake 30 years from now that I am saying about Dan now. He will put his own mark on our program, but he still will be producing great young men.”

Sharp said he owes a giant thankyou to Sister Faith [Szambelanczyk], who brought him to JCA in 1997, and to his wife of 38 years, Jean, and the rest of the Sharp family for the support they have given him.

“I appreciate Jeff [Budz] allowing me to hand-pick my successor,” he added. “Jake is ready to carry on the tradition.”

Jaworski said he owes everything to Sharp for allowing him to join his staff as a 22-year-old and to baseball coach Jared Voss for giving him the opportunity to join his staff at the same age.

Dan Sharp’s career as head football coach at Joliet Catholic Academy ends with 199 victories, 51 losses.

Sharp, who announced Monday he is stepping down and is being replaced by his defensive coordinator, Jake Jaworski, is aware of the record, but finishing one victory short of 200 means little to him.

“I remember talking with Gordie [Gillespie] in his last month, and he said, ‘My time is done here. When I go up to heaven, they’re not going to ask me how many games I won,’ ” Sharp said.

“No one is going to remember numbers. The time is right for me to go. I have run my race.”

Then he smiled and added, “I’ll remember the 51 a lot better than the 199.”

Joliet Catholic has amassed a state-leading 13 football championships and has lost a title game four times.

Six of the titles and runner-up finishes in 2009 and 2011 came during Sharp’s 20-year run.

Still, that’s not what the East Suburban Catholic Conference and Joliet Catholic Hall of Famer was about over the last two decades. While he is remaining as JCA’s athletic director, his influence on the football program – off the field as much as on – will be missed.

“Dan Sharp is Joliet Catholic Academy,” JCA President/Principal Jeff Budz said. “What he taught off the field, and what kind of young men he’s turned out, building character the way he did, I can’t thank him enough and couldn’t be more proud.

“He has been a great friend and a mentor to me. He does so much for all our students, and I’m ecstatic that he is staying on as AD.” Sharp said the most difficult part of deciding to step aside was “because this is Joliet Catholic. I have been able to work with so many great men – including my son Danny, who got hurt when he was a senior but still was one of our captains. It didn’t matter if a kid was first-team all-state or a member of the prep team, I loved them all.

“We always were a program of integrity. We tried to play by the rules.

We wanted to show good sportsmanship. The program earned a lot of respect from people, but it was not because of the record, but how we played, the effort we gave. That was always most important.”

In the 250 JCA games under Sharp, the Hilltoppers averaged 35 points.

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com LAKE FOREST – Leonard Floyd admitted he was playing “jittery” at the start of Sunday’s 26-6 win over the 49ers.

It’s hard to blame the Bears’ firstround draft pick, considering the last time he played with contact he was taken off the field on a backboard and loaded into an ambulance.

“I can’t really remember much after the hit,” Floyd said Monday, his first time with reporters since the play. “I just knew that the trainers [were] telling me that I was going to be all right, I was going to be fine, and I was just listening to them the whole time and what they were saying.”

That concussion suffered against the Giants two weeks ago was much more scary looking than physically harmful, as Floyd played 52 out of 58 snaps in his return to the field, notching two sacks, including a safety.

Floyd said as the game went on, he “settled down and started being back to myself.” He brushed off the early struggles, too, coach John Fox noticed.

“The last 20 years at JCA, from [age] 40 to 60, went super fast,” Sharp said. “I’d like the next 20 years, from 60 to 80, to slow down. I’ll be here to support Jake any way I can, but I won’t be a hovering guy.

“It’s difficult for me to do this, but knowing Jake is the guy to step in, that makes it easier and a little more special.

We just need to be patient with him, let him put his mark on the program.”

Jaworski is in the process of approaching the coaching staff that is in place and said he does not yet have a feel for how many will remain. Among the assistants is Sharp’s younger brother Jim, who helped his brother orchestrate the offense.

“I’m going to reach out to everyone to see who is interested in staying on,” Jaworski said. “There are lots of guys out there who are passionate about Joliet Catholic football.”

Jaworski and his wife, Keri, have three children – Jack, 5; Elle, who will be 3 next month; and Drew, who turned 1 month Sunday.

“Jake is 32, and next year he’ll be 62,” Sharp said with a laugh.

“I didn’t get a rush on him pretty much the whole game. I figured my first rush against him, he was expecting speed. I was leaning hard in my stance, showing like I was gonna get up the field. Inside move was there,”

Floyd said, describing the sack of Blaine Gabbert in the end zone. “It felt good. It felt great. I finally got a safety being in the league. So I got it off the list. It felt great.”

Praise for Hicks: From his D-line spot, Akiem Hicks played every snap Sunday and sacked Colin Kaepernick twice, giving him six on the season, which is a career high.

Fox has not been surprised by Hicks’ pass-rush prowess, even from an interior line position.

“He’s fit really well for us as far as his physical stature. But he does have pass-rush ability,” Fox said. “He actually was in a 4-3 at one point in New Orleans, he was a defensive end, which I think is beneficial. It shows a little about his athleticism. So he’s got a combination of both. He’s been a good get.”

Bullard’s wake-up call: Those looking for more out of third-round pick Jonathan Bullard didn’t get to see that Sunday when the defensive lineman was a healthy scratch. His snap count had diminished over the previous three games, too.

“I think there’s a variety of ways to motivate young people,” Fox said.

“He’s a player that we do like, that we’re trying to bring the best out of him like we do all players.”

Fox went on to say that Sunday was a style of game in which the Bears “had other guys we were going to lean on.”

Bears place Cutler on injured reserve The ASSOCIATED PRESS LAKE FOREST – The Bears have placed quarterback Jay Cutler on injured reserve because of a season-ending right shoulder injury.

The Bears announced the move Monday. Coach John Fox said last week that Cutler would not play again this season.

Cutler injured his shoulder during a loss to the New York Giants on Nov. 20, but finished the game.

He made five starts this season and completed 81 of 137 passes for 1,059 yards with four touchdowns and five interceptions.

Because he doesn’t have a high salary-cap figure for 2017, Cutler could be traded or cut in the offseason.

Heisman finalists: Jackson, Watson, Peppers, 2 Sooners

NEW YORK – Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson is a Heisman Trophy finalist for the second consecutive season, joining Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson, Michigan linebacker Jabrill Peppers and Oklahoma teammates Baker Mayfield and Dede Westbrook.

The finalists were announced Monday on ESPN and the award will be presented Saturday in New York.

Watson finished third in last year’s voting, won by Alabama running back Derrick Henry. Just like last year, he heads to New York not as the favorite but as the contender coming on strong at the end.

“You just don’t have a lot of twotime Heisman finalists over the history of your program. He is our first, and he’s very deserving,” Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said in a statement.

“I’ve said it before; I believe he is the best player in the nation and has been a great representative of our university.”

Mayfield finished fourth last season, but did not get an invite to

Heisman presentation in New York.

Westbrook and Mayfield are the first teammates to be finalists since Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart from Southern California finished first and third, respectively in 2005.

Peppers is the first defensive player to be a Heisman finalists since Notre Dame linebacker Manti Teo was a distant runner-up to Johnny Manziel in 2012.

Finalists are determined by the margins between vote-getters. The ballots of more than 900 voters, which included former Heisman winners, were due Monday.

Watson entered as the preseason favorite in what looked like a strong field of contenders, but Jackson quickly swept past them all to be front-runner. He was brilliant for the first two months of the season and Louisville was looking like a College Football Playoff contender.

It seemed as if Jackson would be a runaway Heisman winner, but the 15th-ranked Cardinals lost their final two games of the season. He was sacked 11 times in a lopsided loss at Houston and he committed four turnovers in a last-second loss against Kentucky.

Watson, meanwhile, has surged since Clemson’s only loss to Pitt in mid-November. He also had the benefit of playing in the Atlantic Coast Conference title game last Saturday and took full advantage of the spotlight. Watson threw three touchdown passes and ran for two scores in a 42-35 victory against Virginia Tech to seal a spot in the College Football Playoff.

The raw numbers still favor Jackson, who is second in the nation in total yards per game (410.7) and has accounted for 51 touchdowns (21 rushing TDs and 30 TD passes) with 13 turnovers (nine INTs and four lost fumbles) in 12 games. Watson averages 341.8 yards per game and has 43 touchdowns (six rushing and 37 passing) with 15 turnovers (all interceptions) in 13 games.

When the two met on Oct. 1 at Clemson in what was one of the season’s most entertaining games, Watson threw for 306 yards and five touchdowns, ran for 91 and was picked off three times. Jackson had 295 yards passing, 162 rushing and accounted for three touchdowns with one interception. Clemson won, 42-36.

“It will mean a lot,” Jackson said about the possibility of winning. “Just

being the first person to win it at the University of Louisville, so it’ll be an honor.”

Mayfield and Westbrook have been a dynamic combination, and late in the season No. 7 Oklahoma started a dual campaign to promote both for the Heisman. Mayfield is on pace to break the NCAA record for passer efficiency rating in a season (197.75). Westbrook has 74 catches for 1,465 yards and 16 touchdowns and has more receptions covering at least 20 yards (26) than any receiver in the country.

Peppers played defense, offense and special teams for Michigan, lining up all over the field. He had 60 tackles, three sacks and an interception on defense, scored three touchdowns on offense being used mostly as a wildcat quarterback and averaged 14.8 yards with a touchdown on punt returns.

Still, he was a bit of a surprising finalist.

Alabama defensive lineman Jonathan Allen, Florida State running back Dalvin Cook and Washington quarterback Jake Browning were among those who were considered potential finalists that did not draw enough support to get an invitation to New York.

OXON HILL, Md. – Albeit too late to save them this year, the San Francisco Giants got their closer.

All-Star righty Mark Melancon and the Giants reached agreement on a $62 million, four-year contract Monday. As baseball’s winter meetings heated up, lefty Rich Hill re-signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers for $48 million over three years.

A couple of smaller deals also developed as teams met inside a hotel on the banks of the Potomac River outside Washington. The Toronto Blue Jays signed versatile Steve Pearce and Philadelphia added reliever Joaquin Benoit.

Nothing yet on the top trade targets – White Sox ace Chris Sale, Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen and possibly two Detroit fixtures, slugger Miguel Cabrera and pitcher Justin Verlander.

But the New York Yankees confirmed they’re trying to boost their bullpen with major free-agent talent.

“We have been pursuing Aroldis Chapman. We also have been talking to Kenley Jansen. We also had talked with Melancon,” Yankees general manager

Melancon tweeted that he was excited to be joining the Giants. They certainly were thrilled to get him, pending a physical, giving the 31-year-old the richest deal ever for a reliever. Because he was traded during the season, from Pittsburgh to Washington, the Giants don’t lose their first-round draft pick next June as compensation.

The Giants’ bullpen was a troublespot all year, blowing 32 saves. Their woes peaked in their final loss, to the Cubs in Game 4 of the NL playoffs, when Chicago scored four runs in the ninth inning against five relievers. Melancon posted a combined 47 saves and a 1.64 ERA last season, a year after leading the majors with 51 saves for the Pirates.

The 36-year-old Hill found stability, and a lot more in Los Angeles. He was on the scrap heap in 2015, pitching in independent ball for the Long Island Ducks, before resurrecting his career.

“I think it’s something that has been an incredible journey to get to this point, but never did I ever think that I would pack it in,” he said.

Hill went a combined 12-5 with a 2.12 ERA in 20 starts for the Dodgers and Oakland last season.

Devine, Minooka dominate Minooka boys bowling invite SUBMITTED REPORTS MINOOKA – The Minooka boys bowling team finished 1-2 in the Minooka Invitational last Saturday at Channahon Lanes. Two Plainfield North entries finished fifth and 10th.

The Indians’ No. 1 team rolled a three-game score of 3,003 and the No. 2 team rolled a 2,749, 254 pins ahead of third-place Oswego East.

North’s No. 1 team shot 2,660 and the Tigers’ No. 2 team scored a 2,472.

CHICAGO – Damian Lillard had 30 points and seven assists, CJ McCollum scored 24 and the Portland Trail Blazers beat the Bulls, 112-110, on Monday night for their third consecutive victory.

Allen Crabbe added 17 points for Portland, which opened a five-game trip with its fourth win in five games.

Maurice Harkless had 11 and Evan Turner finished with 10, providing a nice boost in the fourth quarter.

Dwyane Wade scored 34 points for the Bulls, and Jimmy Butler finished with 26 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Robin Lopez had seven points and 14 rebounds.

The Bulls played without point guard Rajon Rondo, suspended one game for conduct detrimental to the team. There was no public indication from the Bulls on what triggered Rondo’s suspension. He is expected to return Tuesday night in Detroit.

“We’ve moved past it. It’s something where we’re not going to talk about the details of it,” coach Fred Hoiberg said.

Mirotic finished with 18 points and seven rebounds for the Bulls, who have dropped three of four. Isaiah Canaan had 10 points.

Lillard scored 17 to help Portland to a 65-57 halftime lead. The Trail Blazers shot 55 percent in the first half, but the Bulls turned it up on defense to get back in the game in the third quarter.

Mirotic capped an 18-4 run with two foul shots, giving the Bulls a 75-70 lead with 5:44 left. The Bulls had an 87-83 advantage before McCollum made a 3-pointer in the final second of the period, trimming the lead to one heading into the final quarter.

Up next: Bulls: Visit Detroit on Tuesday night for their first game of the season against the Pistons. Chicago dropped three of four to Detroit last season.

TRENTON, N.J. – Imagine not being able to afford one of life’s great pleasures – sex.

That’s true for many older couples, doctors say. Soaring prices for prescription medicines for impotence and other problems have put the remedies out of reach for some.

Without insurance coverage, Viagra and Cialis cost about $50 a pill, triple their 2010 list prices. The new “female Viagra,” a daily pill for low sex drive called Addyi, costs $800 per month. Older products for women also have seen huge price run-ups, Truven Health Analytics data show.

“Many of them don’t get past the pharmacy counter once they see the price,” said Sheryl Kingsberg, a University Hospitals-Cleveland Medical Center behavioral psychologist and researcher who counsels men and women.

What people actually pay out of pocket varies. Some insurance prescription plans, including Medicare, cover some of the medicines.

Some plans don’t cover any, arguing they’re not medically necessary.

Many require steep copayments or limit the number of impotence pills per prescription.

“Once you get to a certain price point, sex becomes a financial decision,” said Dr. Elizabeth Kavaler, a sexual dysfunction specialist at New York’s Lenox Hill Hospital. “It takes a lot of the joy out of this.”

by The Associated Press say patients have told them they’ve given up sex because of the cost.

Now, a little relief is coming. Late next year, Viagra and Cialis will get at least one generic competitor costing slightly less; prices will plunge later when more generics reach the market. For women, an Addyi rival is in late-stage testing. A few other products now have generic versions, and other options are in development.

A generation ago, long-married couples accepted their sex lives trailing off with age, Kavaler says. Key hormone levels drop with age, reducing sex drive and causing problems such as impotence and vaginal dryness, which often makes intercourse painful.

Today, midlife divorce is more common, divorced or widowed men and women often seek new partners, and sex becomes important again.

“Couples in their 50s, 60s and 70s are more sexual than they’ve ever been,” said Kavaler.

Until Pfizer launched the first impotence pill, Viagra, in 1998, there were few options for men besides penile implants and injections. Viagra and Cialis each quickly topped $1 billion in global annual sales, and products for women’s symptoms eventually followed. However, price hikes appear to be limiting use of some products in the U.S., where prices aren’t regulated.

Since 2010, the number of Viagra prescriptions filled in the U.S. has fallen 42 percent to about 5 million a year. Meanwhile, prescriptions for Cialis, which now has a popular daily pill option, have gone up slightly, according to health data firm QuintilesIMS. Popular women’s estrogen products such as Vagifem vaginal tablets and Estrace cream also have seen prescriptions decline in recent years.

Addyi, only on the market for a year, has had dismal sales.

en four treatment options, and most pick Vagifem. A month’s supply costs $170 and insurance coverage is limited. A generic version, Yuvafem, just launched at a slightly cheaper price.

“They go to their pharmacy and see how much it costs, and then they call me up and say, ‘I can’t do it,’” said Streicher, director of the Center for Sexual Medicine and Menopause at Northwestern University’s medical school in Chicago.

But not being able to have sex “is a deal-breaker in a lot of relationships,” she added.

The drugs’ makers insist list prices far exceed the negotiated prices insurers pay them and say they price products based on their value. According to the companies, nearly all their customers are insured. Pfizer says most insured Viagra users pay $6 to $8 per pill, for instance.

Patients unwilling to forgo sex, doctors say, split pills or otherwise ration medicines, beg for scarce samples or seek copay discount coupons. Men with enlarged prostates can request Cialis because it’s also approved for that condition, usually with insurance coverage. Some wom-

en make do with over-the-counter lubricants.

Many shop for price, which can vary widely by pharmacy.

Others take a big risk, buying “herbal Viagra” at gas stations or ordering Viagra online from “Canadian pharmacies” that likely sell counterfeit drugs made in poor countries, says Dr. Irwin Goldstein, director of San Diego Sexual Medicine.

Some doctors have gotten inventive.

Dr. Nachum Katlowitz, head of urology at New York’s Staten Island University Hospital, offers an alternative costing about $1 per pill at some pharmacies. The active ingredient in Viagra – sildenafil – is also in Pfizer’s now-generic blood pressure pill Revatio but at one-fifth the dose.

One of his patients, a 62-year-old hospital technician, takes several of the blood pressure pills before sex.

“I couldn’t afford it if I had to pay for Viagra,” says Robert, who asked that his last name not be used to protect his privacy.

He’s experienced modest improvements and said he and his wife of 28 years now enjoy sex twice as often.

NEW LENOX – More than 485 friends of Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox attended the 88th annual Childerguild Ball on Nov. 19 at the Odyssey Country Club and enjoyed wonderful food and dancing.

Festivities included music by the Don Cagen Orchestra and the presentation of the Silver Cross Sehring Medal of Excellence for Healthcare to Paul Pawlak and the Silver Cross Sangmeister Medal of Excellence for Community Service to community leader Cheryl McCarthy.

The premiere event of the holiday season raised more than $202,000, which will be used to support women’s and children’s services at Silver Cross Hospital.

Rezin Orthopedics raises more than $3,700 at annual golf outing

Rezin Orthopedics and Sports Medicine held its 13th annual Golf Outing and Euchre Tournament at Nettle Creek Country Club on Sept. 9.

The proceeds from this year’s event were donated to Team Make a Difference.

The physicians and staff of Rezin Orthopedics and Sports Medicine put together this event every year as a celebration of patients restored ability and activity levels. With more than 170 participants, this event has become a reunion for the physicians and their patients, with many participants returning year after year.

Team Make a Difference is a nonprofit organization that was established to help people in need, a “Hero,” by renovating a dream room for them. This space is considered their special place within their home.

Team Make a Difference creates an atmosphere that is accessible for their needs and also one that is uplifting, beautiful and unique to the individual. It will be their comfort zone, a place where they can quietly heal and regain strength and hope.

Seven Presence Health Hospitals awarded grant

JOLIET – Seven Presence Health hospitals have been awarded a $70,000 grant by the Illinois Public Health Department for the Hospital Preparedness Program to enhance hospital preparedness during public health emergencies.

The grant will be used to conduct hospital emergency preparation activities at Presence Mercy Medical Center (Aurora), Presence Saint Joseph Hospital (Elgin), Presence Covenant Medical Center (Urbana), Presence United Samaritans Medical Center (Danville), Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center (Joliet), Presence Saint Francis Hospital (Evanston) and Presence St. Mary’s Hospital (Kankakee).

Previously, HPP funds have been used to support facility evacuation planning and training, sheltering patients and staff in place, mass fatality management and disaster response. In addition, the hospitals have applied funding to buy

pharmaceutical caches during emergency response situations.

Grant funding also has been used to retain Regional Disaster Preparation Liaisons. These specialists support development and maintenance of preparedness plans as well as purchase equipment, including mobile medical units and equipment to communicate with local emergency responders.

The HPP grants also have helped Presence Health hospitals develop health care coalitions with other hospitals and health care systems, community businesses and nongovernment organizations that can support a facility in caring for patients during emergencies.

Troy Shorewood 3rd-grade class fundraises for cancer charity

SHOREWOOD – Teacher Vicki Petrovic’s third-grade Troy Shorewood Elementary School class just completed its goal to benefit the nonprofit organization Compass to Care, which helps children travel from their homes to hospitals for cancer treatment. They sold bright yellow shoelaces with the words, “Helping Kids Fight Cancer.”

The fundraiser was personal to the students. One of their own, Brandon Otte, is currently battling Langerhans cell histiocytosis, and his classmates wanted to give something meaningful to support his fight.

And though Nigeria was declared polio-free in 2014, two new cases last August and a third case in September have raised the alarm. World health organizations now are redoubling their efforts to implement ongoing vaccination programs.

Is this polio epidemic a danger to the U.S.? The answer is no. Vaccination rates among adults are extremely high, and as long as parents continue to be vigilant about vaccinations and boosters for their children, we as a nation will remain immune to this terrible disease.

According to CDC guidelines, children should be vaccinated with inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) four times – at 2 months of age, at 4 months of age, a dose between 6 and 18 months of age, and a booster dose between 4 and 6 years of age. Until this vaccination schedule is complete, children should not travel to an area where polio still is an active infection.

Eradicating polio worldwide has been one of the most remarkable and successful international health initiatives. Its ongoing success depends on each one of us continuing to be vigilant about vaccination.

Dear Reader: Polio is a crippling, and sometimes fatal, infectious disease that once was common in the U.S. Caused by the polio virus, the disease was widespread among children. During the 1940s and ’50s, outbreaks caused spinal and respiratory paralysis in 15,000 sufferers each year. That changed thanks to the development of the polio vaccine in the mid1950s, and to the success of our ongoing national vaccination program. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states polio has been eliminated in the U.S. In our country, vaccination programs have resulted in a sharp decline in the number of polio cases, from 35,000 in 1953 to 5,300 four years later. With the introduction of an oral vaccine in 1961, the number of new cases in the U.S. continued to plummet. There have been no new cases of polio reported in the U.S. since 1979. The last known case of polio acquired outside the U.S. and imported into the country was in 1993.

However, as you point out, polio remains a global concern. International health organizations have made polio vaccination a priority, with more than 2.5 billion children vaccinated worldwide since 1988. As a result, the overall number of new polio cases worldwide has dropped a remarkable 99 percent.

First and foremost: When you stand in line with your child, and it’s finally their turn and they start to cry, scream and tremble, please don’t force them to sit on Santa’s lap. If you do, you are traumatizing your child. Is a picture really worth your child’s well-being?

Next, I would discourage new moms from rushing from the hospital with their newborn, 2- or 3-day-old babies. You need to remember how many children sit on Santa’s lap. Babies’ immune systems are fragile, and Santa’s suit can be loaded with germs.

Typically, the traditional prostheses can be hot, heavy, expensive and take quite a while to arrive. Knitted Knockers are made by people who care. Sometimes your request can be filled that very day. All you need to do is ask. These are sent nationwide and all over the world.

I learned about this wonderful organization earlier this year, and I am now the northern California distribution point.

The response we’ve had from women who receive them is astounding.

Please let breast cancer survivors know about Knitted Knockers at www.knittedknockers.org. There they will find an order form to fill out, and we will be happy to mail out one or a pair. They give women confidence and comfort at a time when they can really use it.

The second-most prolific author of bridge books is Ron Klinger from Australia. He is known for packing a lot of material into a small space. His latest book is “Defending Doubled Contracts” (Weidenfeld & Nicolson).

The complexity of the deals is variable, as are the levels of the contracts (the one-level to the seven-level) and the sizes of the available penalties (from down one to down six). All the deals occurred at the table; Klinger composed none himself.

In this deal, how did East-West defend against five diamonds doubled after West led the spade king?

Many Souths would have opened three diamonds with the seven-card suit, hoping that a good heart fit did not exist. This South tried to catch up on the next round. If West had not doubled, maybe East would have bid six no-trump, which would have failed on a non-diamond lead; or six clubs, which could have been made; or, best of all, five no-trump pick a slam.

Sitting East-West were two Australian internationals, Ted Chadwick and David Beauchamp. Under West’s spade king, East dropped the nine, a suit-preference signal for hearts. (He wondered if West had led a singleton and thought it highly likely that West had the heart ace.)

West shifted to the heart deuce.

East won with his king, returned the suit and received a ruff. Then he underled his club ace to give partner the lead for a fourth round of hearts, East overruffing dummy’s diamond queen with his king.

Have you been counting? That was the first six tricks for East-West, resulting in down four and plus 800.
