Chicago Street looking north – Joliet The typical main street in rural America started out as the center of activity on the most important, if not the only, road in town. As the town prospered, the street grew as well.

In the beginning, the first main street provided access to almost everything through proximity. Everything that the growing town needed was located along or near the street: city hall, the post office, the train depot, a grocery store, bank, harness shop, hardware shop, doctor’s office, a pharmacy, restaurants and taverns, among others.

Although these streets had been improved for bicycles in the 1890s, the biggest problem with these early dirt roads was that they often were ruined by heavy wagons and early automobile traffic and often remained impassable for much of the year. Early cars – particularly the Ford Model T, which sat up high – were designed to cope with rural roads, but roads had to change to accommodate cars.

The building on the left is the Goodspeed Building, with the advertising sign for the Chicago Dentists displayed in the corner. Just down the block on the west side of Chicago Street is the Munroe Block (1878) building.

Across the street on the northeast corner of Chicago Street is the Harris and Foley Store. Further down the block, the four-story Barber Building (1887), with its steep gable roof and castellated tower, is visible. Designed by F. S. Allen, the four-and-a-half-story limestone building once was known as the “finest office structure in Joliet” in 1900.

New Lenox-based model railroad club building state-of-the-art layout

mmallory@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Tucked away in a small New Lenox industrial park is the largest model train railroad of its kind in the Midwest.

Chicagoland Lionel Railroad Club Inc., located at 1311 S. Schoolhouse Road, is home to more than 100 dedicated members and 5,000 square feet of model railroad hobby space.

Saturday was the monthly open house event for the club, which hosts the open houses September through May, and twice in December to get everyone in the Christmas spirit.

Anyone in attendance Saturday saw an array of railroad layouts with Christmas trees somehow placed in the center.

“We used elves,” Club President Herb Koch said.

Lionel is an American company founded in 1900 that designs and produces model trains and railroads. It has several regional chapters, and this one is taking things to the next level in its 22nd year and 12th year in its own building.

Club members are in the middle of installing a state-of-the-art, interactive, multilevel layout that took two years to plan. Members still are deciding on a final track layout, but have begun laying the foundation for scenery that will bring the railroad to life.

But the club already has realistic layouts on display. The wall of the clubhouse features a panoramic background from left to right that starts with the Chicago skyline then transitions into Lockport and Joliet.

Along the train tracks below the panorama are models of a refinery, a power plant, a scenic bluff area and even a drive-in theater. Modern touches have been added, too, such as model wind turbines like those that gather wind energy in open fields.

Building a legacy

Over the years, more than 2,000 Cub Scouts have earned merit badges through the club’s annual railroading program.

And after years of hard work, the club is bringing in accolades.

On Oct. 1, Lionel President Howard Hitchcock visited the clubhouse to present members with the inaugural Ambassador Club of the Year Award for 2015-16. More than 100 people attended the event, where Koch accepted

The ambassador program is designed to bring interest in not only Lionel products, but model railroads as a whole. Chicagoland competed for the award with several other regional clubs from California to New York.

The average age of a club member is 55 to 65 years old, Koch said. There were eight founding members who came together in 1994 to form the club in the Great Hall of Chicago’s Union Station. The club quickly grew to a membership of 30 people.

Some of those original members have since died, but not without helping set in motion a new generation of railroad hobbyists.

Hatje was interested in trains from the moment he saw them at 1 or 2 years old. Thomas the Tank Engine had him hooked.

Not only that, but his aunt lives near railroad tracks.

“I’d sit out there for a good six hours just watching trains go by,” Hatje said.

Hatje, of Manhattan, got his own equipment in 2006. He was helping out Saturday and ran one of his train sets with a remote control.

“I’d say the best thing about the club are the people that are in it,” Hatje said as he moved a shipment of logs around the tracks. “I’ve never met a bad person in this hobby.”

But it’s not just a hobby to Hatje.

One day, he’d like to become an engineer and drive trains.

Founding member Bob Ciolino, of Frankfort, said the camaraderie and makeup of the club are among its best qualities. He noted how members come from all industries. He worked as a banker, while some are electricians, doctors, police officers and more. One

New Lenox man recounts helping save teen

Shaw Media correspondent The family of a Chicago teenager most surely will be counting their blessings this Thanksgiving, after almost losing the young man in a recent Lake Michigan near-drowning incident.

New Lenox resident Ron Romero also is grateful the 19-year-old, who wishes to remain anonymous, lived through the experience. Romero had a hand in saving his life, pulling him from the lake back onto Chicago’s Navy Pier. At first, however, Romero was Ray Romero certain the youth had drowned.

“When I got there,” Romero said, “he was already in the water, floating facedown. He was in a dead man’s float. ...

When I saw him in the water, I thought he was dead.”

Romero said he heard the teen is fine now, out of the hospital and recovering well.

The night still seems surreal to him.

A sound engineer and a musician in his own right who plays bass with the band Acoustic Avenue, Romero had just wrapped up an evening running sound for a Blues Brothers tribute band at the Aon Grand Ballroom at the far east end of Navy Pier. It was around 11:30 p.m. Nov. 12.

It had been a successful gig, he said, with a black-tie guest list of about 650.

He was one of the last to leave and had

New Lenox man who came to the aid of teen who jumped in Lake Michigan finished loading his equipment into his van, when he heard a young couple a short distance away.

“I heard them talking very loudly,” he said, “and I thought they were arguing.”

A little concerned about the safety of the young woman, he pulled his van closer so that his headlights were shining on them, then he got out of the van.

That’s when he saw there were three people there – the couple, later reported to be David Martin and his fiancee, Eilis Smith, of Omaha, Nebraska, and a younger man.

“The tone was kind of angry,” he said, “but I didn’t know what was going on.”

He said he later learned from Martin that the teenager seemed to be hallucinating about being in a war scenario and thought the only place he would be safe from the battle was in the water.

He was reportedly yelling, “They’re coming, they’re coming!”

The younger man then ran toward the lake, somehow getting past the railing, and jumped into Lake Michigan.

Romero didn’t see the actual jump. By the time he ran to the edge of the pier,

the teen was floating face-down in the water, motionless.

Romero said Martin wanted to jump in the lake to save him, but Romero tried to convince him not to.

“I told him not to jump in,” Romero said. “No one else was there but us. I told him I didn’t want to pull two bodies out of there. Later, he told me he didn’t even hear me say that, but I was yelling. I knew I had nobody there to help me pull both of them out of the water.

I thought, ‘This could turn out really bad.’ ” Martin did jump in. He was holding a life preserver, and Romero held the rope end of it. After Martin swam out and turned the jumper over onto his back, Romero pulled them both to the edge of the pier, but couldn’t physically pull them any farther. He tied the rope to the pier so they wouldn’t drift away, then ran to the ballroom to get help.

“It seemed like everything was happening so fast and so slow at the same time,” he said.

The teen was unresponsive and not breathing when Romero returned with help from the ballroom. Lying on his belly, Romero then reached down

over the edge of the pier and pulled the teenager up. Two other men who had joined them helped with the effort. Others pulled Martin out of the water, who was fine.

Romero was sure the jumper he pulled out had drowned, but a couple of minutes after the rescue, he heard him cough, and then begin to breathe erratically. Emergency vehicles arrived just at that time and took over the medical efforts.

The teen survived and was taken to a hospital, where he reportedly recovered. Romero couldn’t believe he had lived.

“We were just very fortunate that it happened that way,” he said.

Romero drove home exhausted and in disbelief of what had happened. It hadn’t sunk in that he was a hero that night. It was only the next day that he realized the full impact of what had happened.

Today, he is glad the teen and Martin are both alive and well, but there also is the undertone of what might have caused the teen’s hallucinations.

Romero hopes they weren’t drug-induced but is afraid they might have been.

“I hope this has had such an impact on this kid that he’ll never do that again,” he said.

The rescue received quite a bit of media attention, and Romero said he was even contacted by a representative of the Red Cross, who told him he was a true hero and that he would be nominated for recognition for his actions.

Consultant: Lincoln-Way D-210 can be on track

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – A consultant has outlined several ways Lincoln-Way District 210 can re-establish “solid financial footing.”

Lawrence Heidemann, of StratPlan, gave a presentation to the board on financial projections at Thursday’s meeting.

Heidemann said the district should “[institutionalize] an ongoing budget surplus,” use the surplus to eliminate tax anticipation warrants, or short-term debt, and also use the surplus to re-establish workable fund balances.

After that, the district can establish “prudent contingencies to enable future strategic actions,” he said.

“The district does appear to be on a reasonable track to do all of that,”

Heidemann said. ”There are no silver bullets and it will take a continued discipline. It will take several years of that discipline to institutionalize the expected surplus and eliminate the [tax anticipation] warrants.”

The district has been on the state’s financial watch list twice and its financial condition also was investigated by the state. In a bid to reduce budget deficits, the board approved in August 2015 a controversial decision to close Lincoln-Way North, one of its four high schools.

After Thursday’s meeting, Superintendent Scott Tingley said Heidemann volunteered to make his presentation.

Board member Christopher Lucchetti asked Heidemann for the actual data behind his presentation so the board could see how the calculations were reached, saying he thought there was a

scale issue with the charts.

Lucchetti also had an issue with charts detailing projections for days cash-on-hand, or the estimated number of days the district could meet operating expenses without additional revenue.

“I just don’t see how we can go from 30 to 90 days cash on hand in one year,” Lucchetti said.

In response, Heidemann pointed out the estimated amount of savings in staff retirements and the growing overall assessed property values in Will County.

Once surpluses are finished eliminating short-term debt, they can be added to operating fund balances, he said.

He said a critical piece to controlling expenses is salary and benefits, which take up 80 percent of the district’s budget.

“So if I can recap: In your profes-

sional opinion, this game is won or lost on salaries and benefits?” asked board member Joseph Kirkeeng.

“I don’t think there is any other factor that can seriously derail it. Other things can certainly complicate it,” Heidemann said.

Land sales

The board approved selling three parcels of land Thursday: • 100 acres at West Manhattan Road, Manhattan, for $1.2 million • 78.18 acres at West Smith Road, Manhattan, for $700,000 • 71.9 acres at 191st Street and Harlem Avenue, Tinley Park, for $4.5 million Lucchetti asked what would happen if the minimum prices set for the properties were not met. Tingley said the board could start the process again with a lower bid.

Accordionist-artist had fun with her art More online

JOLIET – Art Mackay will never forget taking his wife to Hawaii for her 80th birthday.

While there, JoAnne Ford-Mackay decided to spend an afternoon shopping. But when she returned, she didn’t show off her purchases, as she customarily did. Art forgot about it until they had returned home.

“Hey,” Art said one day. “What did you buy in Hawaii?”

Of course! JoAnne had forgotten, too. So she headed into the bedroom and didn’t come back. Art said he waited and waited. When JoAnne returned, she was wearing a hula skirt and swaying her hips.

“I’m thinking, ‘Oooh, romance,’ ” Art said. “But she pointed to the kitchen and said, ‘Take out the garbage.’ ” JoAnne was 87 when she died Oct. 21.

Fifteen years, Art said. Fifteen lucky years of marriage he had with JoAnne. Art said he met JoAnne on Aug. 17, 2000, at the home of a mutual friend. In all his years of playing accordion, Art had never met a female

took her to the former Willowbrook Ballroom in Willow Springs to celebrate their engagement.

“She was a good dancer,” Art said.

Armed with their accordions and playful personalities, the newlyweds performed at various venues and gave accordion workshops at local schools.

In the 1970s, Art had served as principal at the former Eisenhower Elementary School in Joliet.

JoAnne’s son, Kevin Ford, of Joliet said he saved the Christmas and birthday greetings his mother and Art played and sang into his answering machine. When the couple entertained at nursing homes, banquets and corporate parties, Art said they added fun to the music.

“We had a little routine,” Art said.

Nolan made a wall display and for every $15 collected (the cost of one wreath), she hung a 12-inch foam wreath. When they had enough to purchase 20, the small foam wreaths together created one giant wreath on the wall.

The wreath in the hall kept growing as money kept coming in. By Veterans Day, the students collected enough to buy 50 wreaths; they had raised $750, said Nolan.

Students shared many stories of how they helped to collect money. One student went to family and friends and collected $155 on her own. Whether they handed over their extra change or went beyond, each student could participate to help others. By not having each classroom compete against each other, the wreath program had students working together and giving because it was the right thing to do, Nolan said.

In a joint venture, Wreaths Across America is donating $5 of every wreath purchase to Operation Care Package, which sends holiday care packages to deployed troops.

Three Rivers students can feel proud they not only raised enough for 50 wreaths, they are helping to send care packages as well, Nolan said.

Droves of volunteers and family members will be placing holiday wreaths on the graves of veterans Dec. 17 at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. The same thing will be happening on the same day at over 1,000 national cemeteries in the U.S. The program is Wreaths Across America, and students from Three Rivers School in Channahon have played a big part in raising funds for the wreaths.

School Interventionist Karen Nolan heard about the program after her own father passed away and was buried at the Elwood veterans cemetery.

Then she found out that while more than 9,000 wreaths were placed on graves last year, the cemetery has over 45,000 veterans buried there.

That gave Nolan an idea. School kids no longer get Veterans Day off because educators feel it’s an opportunity to learn about those who serve our country, giving the day meaning rather than just another day off.

Nolan started a school campaign to raise money to buy wreaths for Wreaths Across America. She and the students at Three Rivers School set a goal to raise $300, enough to buy 20 wreaths.

kneel down and sing, ‘Let Me Call You Sweetheart.’ She’d come back of me, pull me by the ear and say, ‘Don’t you dare play for those ladies!’ ” Art chuckled as he recalled the one time JoAnne altered the routine. He’s singing and playing, but JoAnne isn’t tugging his ear.

“I turn around, and she’s sitting on this guy’s lap,” Art said.

JoAnne, an only child, started playing the accordion at age 5 and took art lessons growing up as well.

Always artistic, JoAnne loved sketching male movie stars and sending them the portraits, Kevin said. Art said JoAnne felt male faces were easier to draw than female ones. And, yes, JoAnne even sketched Art. “She drew pictures of Fred MacMurray, Tony Bennett and Alan Ladd,” Art said. “Oh, and Gregory Peck. She met him when he was quite young. Years later, when he came to the Rialto, she went backstage and introduced herself.”

Many of these stars responded with autographed photos and personal notes, Art said. The Spectator, a former newspaper in Joliet, featured a story about JoAnne and her hobby on its front page, he added.

JoAnne also drew events in her life. When she was young, many of those portraits were of her late first husband, Emmett “Mickey” Ford,

especially depicting him in his baseball uniform and cap.

She also crocheted dolls and gave them as gifts. One of Art’s cherished possessions is a plaque JoAnne made for him with the key to her house.

The plate on it reads: “Art – remember me? That SPECIAL key. I moved you toward what was meant to be.

March 17, 2001.”

Kevin said JoAnne also was president of “Amoco Anns,” the B.P. Amoco Ladies Club (her first husband worked for Amoco Chemical), and headed their bowling teams.

She served the Rialto Square Theatre for 11 years as a volunteer and three years on its board. She was honored in the Rialto Hall of Fame.

Joanne loved the Rialto, Kevin said, and saved news stories about it.

But then, JoAnne was a meticulous record keeper and picture taker, Kevin said. She even wrote her own obituary, he added. Family knew they could depend on JoAnne, especially in times of crisis and sickness.

“She took care of many people right to the end,” Kevin said.

Art will never forget the last time he saw JoAnne. She was in the hospital, sleeping. Art leaned over and said, “I love you.”

“Her eyes opened and she said, ‘I love you, too,’ ” Art said. “And then she was gone.”

Nostalgia accounts for a good portion of why trains and railroads appeal to people of so many different backgrounds, Ciolino said.

He recalled how as a child at Christmastime he would set up a railroad around the base of the tree and watch the trains go around it. Building model railroad systems was a way for kids to be creative, he said.

Although video games seem to have taken over, Ciolino said, model railroads still are drawing an interest.

He spoke to a mother who came to the clubhouse with her kids and said it’s become a tradition to make a trip there each year.

Admission to the clubhouse is $3 a person and $8 for families. A yearly membership is $150. The club is an authorized Lionel service station that makes repairs on models dating back to the 1950s.

Robert Bruce “Bob, Whizzer, Boo, Schnozz, Pops, Gramps, Boppa” Whyte, of Lockport, IL, age 86, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet, IL after a recent illness.

He was a loving husband to Beverly (Pace) Whyte; cherished father of Kim McGrath and David (Kelly) Whyte; and devoted grandfather to Kelsey McGrath, and Ethan and Jacob Whyte.

Bob was born September 5, 1930 in Joliet, IL to John and Velma Whyte, and brother to John and George. Along with his father and brothers, he achieved the designation of Eagle Scout.

He graduated from Joliet Central High School in 1948 and Joliet Junior College in 1950, where his love of basketball was developed on the court. Schock allegedly profited off voters’ D.C. visits

CHICAGO – The indictment of a 35-year-old disgraced former Republican congressman jolted residents of his central Illinois district, shaken by prosecutors’ claims that Aaron Schock illegally dipped into campaign and government coffers to subsidize a lavish lifestyle, including his Capitol Hill office done up in the style of “Downton Abbey.”

Perhaps more stunning was an allegation found on page 34 of the charging document: Schock’s apparent willingness to pocket thousands of constituents’ dollars by arranging annual Washington tours combined with meetand-greets.

“I know that some people feel very hurt, angered and betrayed,” said Quincy insurance agent Jack Freiburg, who attended such an event in 2014.

Judge: No bail for 2 teens in congressman’s grandson’s death

CHICAGO – Bail was denied Sunday afternoon for two teenagers charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of an Illinois congressman’s grandson after an argument over a pair of basketball shoes.

The 16-year-old boy and 17-year-old girl appeared before Cook County Judge James Brown wearing juvenile detention center sweatshirts, their heads bowed, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Brown called the killing of U.S. Rep. Danny Davis’ grandson a “total callous disregard for human life.”

Police said the two were arrested after they were identified as suspects in Friday’s shooting death of 15-year-old Javon Wilson.

“I feel a great deal of empathy, especially for the families of the two individuals who are involved,” Davis said. “I’m sure that’s not the way they were hoping to go into their Thanksgiving week.”

Davis said it’s unfortunate the teens “would have access to a gun that could

lead to that kind of mayhem” and that he will “continue to work with those who are trying to get guns out of circulation.”

He also says more funding is needed for education and after-school programs.

O’Hare workers who plan to strike will announce date Monday

CHICAGO – O’Hare International Airport workers who voted to strike soon will announce when they plan to take action.

Service Employees International Union Local 1 officials said they will announce the date of their strike at 10 a.m. Monday at the airport.

About 500 workers committed to a strike after a vote Thursday. The workers involved have been trying to organize with the union’s help. They work mainly for private contractors at the airport.

The workers are seeking union rights and a $15 an hour wage. They include baggage handlers, cabin cleaners, janitors, and wheelchair attendants.

SEIU Local 1 President Tom Balanoff said they don’t expect to shut down the airport but will create a disruption. The strike comes during the busy Thanksgiving holiday travel week.

July 2014 included bus rides to the National Zoo and a reception at the Japanese ambassador’s residence. Freiburg paid a $785 “Fly-in Conference Fee” to Schock’s office – meant to cover meals, transportation and other hosting costs – on top of $2,000 to $3,000 for a plane ticket, hotel room and other expenses.

Schock, the once-rising GOP star and prodigious party fundraiser, secretly kept at least $11,000 from that event, the indictment said.

Freiburg recalled that many on the trip were well-off but others weren’t, including several recent college graduates. “Some sacrificed financially to go,” the 63-year-old said.

Prosecutors said that in 2011, Schock set up a Florida bank account under the name of a factious company, “Global Travel International,” and instructed staff to deposit that year’s fly-fee money into it. He allegedly kept at least $4,482 from the 2011 fly-in, which happened in the same month he appeared on the cover of Men’s Health, his shirt unbuttoned to show off his six-pack abs. Landing the magazine cover – with the blurb “Rep. Aaron Schock is willing to give you the shirt off his back” – drew mockery but boosted Schock’s profile nationally.

Police officers and church personnel and volunteers participated in the event Saturday morning at the church north of Wrigley Field.

Rockford to consider financial incentives for proposed plant

ROCKFORD – The city of Rockford may offer financial incentives to a company that hopes to hire 75 new workers to staff a plant in a rehabbed industrial building.

The Rockford Register Star reported that the city has proposed offering $150,000 in grant funding to Delicate Plastics. The company wants to rehab an industrial building in a low income neighborhood.

The proposal would require the company to hire some employees who have criminal records or may lack previous work experience.

BEDMINSTER, N.J. – Mitt Romney is a key contender to become the nation’s next secretary of state and retired Marine Corps Gen. James Mattis was an “impressive” prospect for defense secretary, President-elect Donald Trump and his No. 2, Mike Pence, said Sunday.

“Gov. Romney is under active and serious consideration to serve as secretary of state of the United States,” said Pence, the vice president-elect who is leading the search for Trump’s cabinet members, in an interview on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

On Sunday, the billionaire interrupted his tweeted criticisms of “Saturday Night Live,” the hit musical “Hamilton,” and Democrats to write that, “General James ‘Mad Dog’ Mattis, who is being considered for secretary of defense, was very impressive yesterday. A true General’s General!”

The comments were indications that Trump is looking outside his immediate circle as he works toward rounding out his foreign policy and national security teams. On Friday, he named a loyalist, retired Gen. Michael Flynn, as his national security adviser. Trump told reporters Sunday that one of his most loyal and public allies, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, also was a prospect for secretary of state “and other things.” Giuliani at one point had been considered for attorney general, but Trump gave that job to Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and 2012 GOP presidential contender, and

Trump exchanged bitter insults during the campaign, and Mattis has not been considered a Trump confidante. The appointment of more establishment figures could offer some reassurance to lawmakers and others concerned about Trump’s hard-line positions on immigration and national security and his lack of foreign policy experience.

But even as Trump and his team discussed pressing issues facing the country and how to staff the incoming administration, the president-elect’s Twitter feed suggested other issues too were on his mind.

His targets Sunday included retiring Democratic Leader Harry Reid. Trump tweeted that incoming Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer, another media-savvy New Yorker, was “far smarter” than Reid and “has the ability to get things done.”

Trump also complained that “Saturday Night Live,” which thrives on making fun of politicians, is “biased” and not funny. The night before, actor Alec Baldwin portrayed Trump as Googling, “What is ISIS?” Trump also insisted again that the cast and producers of “Hamilton” should apologize after the lead actor addressed Pence from the stage Friday night, telling the vice president-elect that “diverse America” was “alarmed and anxious” about the incoming administration.

Trump kids’ roles blur line between transition, company

NEW YORK – Almost every morning since their father’s stunning victory on Election Day, three of Donald Trump’s grown children walk through the Trump Tower lobby and board an elevator. But are Don Jr., Ivanka and Eric going to the campaign office on the 5th floor? Their business offices on the 25th floor? The president-elect’s penthouse on the 56th floor?

That uncertainty highlights the multiple roles the children play for their father. For the past year, the lines were constantly blurred between political campaign and business empire, raising questions about a possible conflict of interest between Trump’s White House and his sprawling business interests.

The children are poised to wield incredible influence over their father, even if they don’t follow him to Washington. Trump said consistently during the campaign that if he won, those children would stay in New York and run his business. But the three – plus Ivanka’s husband, Jared Kushner – were all named to the transition team’s executive committee.

So far, they’ve been heavily involved in shaping the new administration.

They’ve sat in on meetings and taken late night calls from their father. They advocated for making Reince Priebus, the Republican National Committee chairman, the White House chief of staff. They counseled against bringing back Corey Lewandowski, Trump’s first campaign manager, who was fired in June on their advice.

On Thursday, Ivanka Trump and Kushner were present for the president-elect’s meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at Trump Tower.

“We are in the process of vetting various structures with the goal of the immediate transfer of management of The Trump Organization and its portfolio of businesses to Donald Jr., Ivanka and Eric Trump as well as a team of highly skilled executives,” Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks said. She said the structure “will comply with all applicable rules and regulations.”

Trump’s company is the largest business portfolio to belong to a modern sitting president. Federal ethics rules would allow Trump to run his business interests from the White House, or, perhaps more likely, influence decisions made by his children.

That raises conflict of interest concerns: For example, Trump could set domestic policy while making deals abroad that could affect his corporation,

even if it were technically in his children’s hands.

Kellyanne Conway, a senior adviser, disputed the idea that the Trump children’s involvement in the transition could lead to a breach of trust.

“You’re presuming that they are doing certain things that they should not be doing,” Conway said. “They are his children. And they’ve been his business colleagues for a long period of time.

They obviously will support their father as president.”

But the potentially problematic entanglement revealed itself this past week when Ivanka Trump’s company promoted a $10,800 bracelet she wore during a “60 Minutes” interview on CBS. The spokeswoman for the company later apologized.

The children are limited in what formal role they could take in a Trump administration. Congress passed an anti-nepotism law in 1967 that prohibits the president from appointing a family

member to work in the office or agency they oversee. The measure was passed as a reaction to President John F. Kennedy appointing his brother Robert as attorney general. But the law does not appear to prevent the children – or Kushner, who is one of Trump’s closest aides and is said to be weighing a White House role – from serving as unpaid advisers or providing informal counsel.

The three grown children delivered well-received speeches at this summer’s Republican National Convention in which they tried to humanize their father. Don Jr. and Eric were staples on conservative radio and on the road, trekking to campaign offices and small rallies across battleground states like Ohio and North Carolina. Ivanka Trump, meanwhile, was utilized in some of the campaign’s biggest moments, including introducing her father before his convention speech, unveiling his family leave plan and campaigning across the crucial Philadelphia suburbs.

There were bumps in the road.

Eric and Ivanka were the subject of some embarrassing headlines when it was revealed that they were not registered to vote in time for their father in the New York primary. An African biggame safari Eric and Don Jr. took drew criticism from animal rights activists.

And Don Jr. has received criticism for tweeting images likening Syrian refugees to a poisoned bowl of Skittles and a cartoon character appropriated by white supremacists.

But now they stand poised to be the most influential presidential children in decades, as recent White House offspring have been far younger than the eldest Trump children, who are all in their 30s. During the campaign, Eric Trump insisted that the children’s main “focus was the company,” but “we’d always be one phone call away” if needed, the younger Trump told The Associated Press in May. “We’d do anything for the man.”

Obama: I’ll push back on Trump if needed to defend U.S. ideals

LIMA, Peru – President Barack Obama said Sunday he doesn’t intend to become his successor’s constant critic – but reserved the right to speak out if President-elect Donald Trump or his policies breach certain “values or ideals.”

Offering a rare glimpse into his thoughts on his post-presidency, Obama suggested once he was out of office he would uphold the tradition of ex-presidents stepping aside quietly to allow their successors space to govern. He

heaped praise on former President George W. Bush, saying he “could not have been more gracious to me when I came in” and said he wanted to give Trump the same chance to pursue his agenda “without somebody popping off” at every turn. But Obama suggested there may be limits to his silence.

“As an American citizen who cares deeply about our country, if there are issues that have less to do with the specifics of some legislative proposal or battle or go to core questions about our values and ideals, and if I think that it’s necessary or helpful for me to defend those ideals, I’ll examine it when it comes,” Obama told reporters.

Obama, who has consistently praised Bush for the way he’s handled his ex-presidency, faces a conundrum about how to handle his own. Although he’s vowed to ensure a smooth handover of power, Obama is keenly aware he’s being replaced by a new president who holds antithetical views on issue after issue.

The president spoke out vigorously throughout the campaign against Trump’s calls for banning Muslim immigrants, deporting millions of people living in the U.S. illegally, repealing “Obamacare” and canceling the Paris climate deal, to name a few. Those policy proposals and others like them have

stoked fear for many Americans who oppose Trump and are hoping vehement opposition from Obama and other Democrats might prevent Trump from implementing them.

Although Obama didn’t specify what might trigger him to break silence, he left himself a broad window of possibilities. His comments suggested he’d be most inclined to weigh in if Trump violated basic principles Obama has tried to uphold, such as minority rights, equal protection and respect for civilian life. Obama has long warned that Trump might impulsively use nuclear weapons, and has cast a dim view on ideas such as a Muslim registry.

Officials’ mistake aside, Plainfield North earned its berth in state final The IHSA issued a statement late Saturday night, saying that the officials made a mistake and acknowledged their error.

By rule, the Plainfield North football team should not have been awarded the untimed down following the intentional grounding call on the final play in regulation. Fenwick should have won, 10-7.

Instead, Connor Peplow kicked a game-tying 22-yard field goal, and the Tigers went on to win, 18-17, in overtime. Decisions of game officials are final, so North will face East St. Louis in the Class 7A state championship game at 4 p.m. Saturday at the University of Illinois in Champaign.

It’s a shame for Fenwick that this happened. But looking at it from the other perspective, it’s a shame there is a shadow cast over North’s first semifinal victory. The Tigers received an opportunity to survive, and they did what good teams do. They came through.

Peplow kicked the field goal in the ultimate pressure situation. Dillon McCarthy scored the touchdown in overtime, followed by the decisive two-point conversion run.

“Until tonight, we had been playing well on both sides of the ball,” Tigers coach Tim Kane said. “We weren’t getting it done on offense tonight, but they [Friars] did a very nice job defensively against us.”

A major reason was Fenwick inside linebacker Brett Moorman, probably the most devastating defensive player the Tigers have faced all season.

As for O’Laughlin, who caught eight passes for 102 yards, Kane said, “He did a nice job. He’s good. Kevin [Block] did a good job overall against him, but he hurt us.”

“Now we play East St. Louis. They have that great receiver [Jeff Thomas]. I have to come back and play better against him.”

Lost in the final analysis were the contributions of receiver TJ Kane, the coach’s son. He caught an 11-yard pass for the Tigers’ initial first down – on their fifth possession. He made a difficult catch along the sideline to set up a first-and-goal at the Fenwick 7, after which Zach Nadle scored to get North within 10-7 late in the third quarter.

And then, on a double pass with barely over 2 minutes remaining, he threw a 32-yard completion to Peplow, who finished with three catches for 42 yards and two rushes for 18. That set up a first down on the Fenwick 22, and on the next play, Miller tossed an apparent touchdown pass to McCarthy, only to have it erased because McCar-

thy stepped out of bounds at the 5 and came back in to make the catch.

“The first half couldn’t have gone worse for our offense,” TJ Kane said.

“In the second half, we got things turned around.”

Block relived the final couple of minutes.

“We had the ball, looked like we had scored to go ahead, got it called back and then when we had the late pass intercepted, we had to hold back tears,” he said. “It was really sad. I think Brady [Miller] had cold hands and had trouble throwing in the wind.

“We thought it was over after the interception, then they called the intentional grounding and Connor [Peplow] got a chance to tie it, and he did. At that point, I just was hoping we would bounce back and win it in overtime.

“It was a crazy game.”

And, the job is not finished yet.

“It’s going to be an exciting week,” TJ Kane said.

The problem here, of course, is knowing how the rule should have been implemented and knowing the game should have ended. And what that does to a Fenwick team that feels it deserves a trip to the state finals.

“On behalf of the IHSA, I express my sincerest apologies to Coach Nudo and his players and coaching staff, as well as to the entire Fenwick administration and community,” Anderson’s statement read. “I understand that it will be difficult to find a silver lining in this particular situation, but I do hope that Fenwick takes pride in all they accomplished today and this season.”

To the IHSA’s credit, it apologized

and was open and honest about what happened and why it ruled the way it did.

I have done plenty of complaining about the IHSA on matters of transparency in the past, but I have a hard time asserting blame here. Officiating is often a thankless job, and the crew made a costly mistake here that won’t be forgotten anytime soon.

To Plainfield North’s credit, it took the opportunity it was given and won the game on the field according to the game official’s ruling.

That, however, is an unfortunate ending.

And how people move on will go a long way in determining how we remember this.

Fenwick should have pride in what it accomplished, and disappointment in what was taken away.

Plainfield North should continue to work for the state title it has been working for and not listen to complaints it shouldn’t have that opportunity. It does, so take advantage and fight for a state title.

There is no conspiracy here. Just an unfortunate incorrect call at the end of a competitive game that ultimately changed the result.

What happened at the end of regulation of Saturday’s Plainfield North-Fenwick state football playoff game has to be every sports official’s worst dream.

Even worse than the one where you wake up out on the field in just your underwear.

Making the wrong call and having that determine the outcome of a game is one of the worst things a group of officials can do.

Especially since, once that game is final, there is nothing that can be done to change it.

In the case of the Illinois High School Association, that was exactly the dilemma.

The IHSA follows NFHS high school football rules, which state that a game shouldn’t be extended and an extra untimed play should not be rewarded on a penalty that is also a loss of down.

So when Fenwick quarterback Jacob Keller threw the ball away as time expired in regulation on Saturday night, the Friars should have been awarded the win and be headed to state.

The problem was that wasn’t where things ended.

Officials ruled that the fourth-down pass was grounding and one final play was awarded to Plainfield North.

To its credit, Plainfield North took advantage. Connor Peplow made a field goal on the untimed down and Plainfield North won in overtime.

After the game, Fenwick looked for an appeal of the result. The IHSA couldn’t give it to them.

While admitting the officials made the wrong call, IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson quoted the association’s bylaws in a statement.

Those bylaws say “the decisions of game officials shall be final; protests against the decision of a game official shall not be reviewed by the Board of Directors.”

Remember here that those bylaws, the rules the organization must follow, are created and voted on by the member schools. The IHSA didn’t make them up.

That being said, don’t be surprised if you see a bylaw amendment proposal to change that rule in the next year.

The call should have been made correctly, of course, and the IHSA is in charge of hiring and training officials for playoff games. But, in sports at all levels, officials create a potential for human error, and that’s what happened here.

This exact same incorrect call was made earlier in the year in college football, when Central Michigan

Area girls basketball teams are hopeful at start of season

The girls basketball season got underway last week and already some teams are seeing encouraging signs.

Here’s a look at most of the area’s teams:

Coach Steve Strough hopes the Blue Devils have enough returning from a 23-7 squad to be in the conference race.

Leading the way will be two returning all-conference players, junior guard Josie Graffeo and senior forward Cameron Hunter. Other top returners are senior forward Elizabeth Coffey, senior center Priscilla Brott and senior guard Isabelle Kurowski.

Coal City

Coach Brad Schmitt’s Coalers return junior forward Mackenzie Bugg (6.6 points, 4.5 rebounds), senior forward Kenady Clayburn (4 rebounds), sophomore guard Bridget Kauzlaric (5.8 points, 3.7 rebounds), senior guard Maddie Halliday and senior guard Cali Caruso. Three starters and three others with significant playing time are back.

Plainfield Central

Wildcats coach Gregg Bayer will look to returning players such as senior forwards Jessica Schroeder and Samantha Newtoff, senior guard/forward Erin Graefen and senior guard Kayley Grabowski.

Gardner-South Wilmington

Returners from last season’s 17-9 Panthers include juniors Jenni Price, Celia Barna, Sydney Perkins, Marlana Ferrari and junior Kaylee Steichen.

Coach Adam Leigh’s team has four seniors who’ve been on the varsity since they were sophomores, but Ferrari, last year’s MVP, will miss most of the season because of a shoulder injury.

Plainfield East

The Bengals have five seniors who have been on the varsity since they were sophomores. Coach Anthony Waznonis will look to seniors Lota Onua, Ashley Smoldt, Maddie Sidman, Kennedy Collins and Jada Neal and junior Olivia Jenkins from last season’s 18-12 team.

Joliet Catholic Academy

Coach Nick Leonard’s Angels are inexperienced with senior guard Emma Ehrsam, senior guard Danielle Scudder and senior forward/center Kendall Spreitzer leading the way.

Joliet Central

Laura Brumfiel takes over as the Steelwomen coach and will look to returning seniors such as Gabby Robertson, Hana May Cardona, H’Aeneise Coopwood and Natae’ya Hudson.

Joliet West

Returners for coach John Placher’s Tigers include senior forwards Raven Reed, Gloria Choate and Nicole Gal, senior guard Shenea Best and junior guard Sarah Gersch. Freshman guard Jazzpher Evans also will be a contributor.

Tracy Rainey takes over as coach, following hall of famer Bill Bozue, and has plenty to work with. Senior guards Shannon O’Donnell and Paige Terrazas and senior forward Quinn Shereck are four-year varsity players, while junior guards Emma Bozue and Sarah Knoepfle are on varsity for a third season.

Veteran coach Ray Liberatore figures to have another good squad with several key players back from last season’s 20-8 team, led by senior guard Brooklyn Bachmann (15.5 points), who’s a four-year starter. Senior guard Hailey Arlis is a two-year starter, while sophomore center Savannah Johnson (6.4 rebounds) and senior center Abby Holloway provide strength inside. Junior guard Jenna Roberts, who was injured most of last season, also figures to start.

Morris

Coach Kate Carey’s team should be improved, as it has three returning starters. They are junior Mya Shannon (11.9 points, 6.2 rebounds) and seniors Meghan Smith (7.7 points, 4.8 rebounds) and Meghan Jurak (6.6 points). Others back from a year ago include Jasmine Cook, Paige Valentine, Destiny Cano

The Celtics expect to bounce back from a tough season when they were very inexperienced. Another painful championship loss in finale for Carl Edwards

The Associated Press HOMESTEAD, Fla. – Carl Edwards’ latest championship loss may have been even more painful than his first.

Leading the NASCAR season finale with 10 laps to go and closing in on his first title, Edwards wrecked while blocking Joey Logano on a restart Sunday night.

Logano turned Edwards sideways and sent him back across traffic at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Kasey Kahne slammed into Edwards’ rear bumper, lifting the No. 19 Toyota off the ground. Edwards spun, hit the outside wall and came to a stop on the track. Edwards climbed out, stood on the banking – not too far from his wrecked car – and watched a replay on a big screen.

Edwards shook his head and muttered “damn” as he realized he essentially caused the melee.

“I couldn’t go to bed tonight and

think that I gave him that lane,” Edwards said.

Jimmie Johnson ended up winning the race, tying a NASCAR record by claiming his seventh championship.

Logano finished fourth, and Kyle Busch was sixth. Edwards, Johnson, Logano and Busch were the only championship contenders in the finale.

“It hurts,” Logano said. “We had a great shot at. ... I don’t blame him. He had to throw the block.”

Edwards brushed off a request to take an ambulance ride to the infield care center, instead making the trip on foot. He stopped by Logano’s pit stall, climbed up on the box and chatted with crew chief Todd Gordon.

“Yeah, no apology,” Edwards said. “I just wanted to say, ‘Hey, that’s just racing and good luck to you guys.’ There’s so much on the line. I don’t want to be anything extra to mess with Joey.”

Edwards got checked out in the care center and then gave a pep talk to fami-

ly and friends, high-fiving each of them.

It was a show of sportsmanship rarely seen in defeat in NASCAR, especially with so much on the line. He was even more supportive of his team, including crew chief Dave Rogers.

“They put it in my hands,” Edwards said. “That’s all you can ask for. ... It didn’t work out. This is life. We performed well. We did our best. I just risked too much and Dave told me before this race it’s a pretty big reward and remember risk gets reward and I just had to push it.”

Edwards led 47 laps before finishing 34th in the race and fourth in the final standings.

But his season will be remembered for another oh-so-close ending.

Five years ago, Edwards and Tony Stewart had a head-to-head showdown at Homestead for the title. Edwards, then driving for Jack Roush, started the finale with a three-point lead in the standings and did everything he could

from the minute he arrived in Florida.

His Roush Fenway Racing team put his Ford on the pole, he led a race-high 119 of the 267 laps and still finished second to Stewart.

Stewart and Edwards finished tied in the final Sprint Cup Series points standings – a first in NASCAR history – and Stewart took the tiebreaker based on his five victories to Edwards’ one.

Edwards started watching a replay of that 2011 race earlier in the week, but ended up turning it off in disgust.

He surely won’t want to watch this one, which left him still without a championship in 12 full seasons at the Cup level. And as much as the restart ended Edwards’ night, a late caution caused by little-known driver Dylan Lupton caused as much frustration.

“I just hated to see that caution,” Edwards said. “That was very, very frustrating. I felt like that was our race and our championship, but hey, this is how racing goes.”

HOMESTEAD, Fla. – Jimmie Johnson tied Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt with a record seven NASCAR championships when the hard-luck breaks of racing turned Sunday’s title-deciding finale into his crowning moment.

Johnson probably had the worst car of the four championship contenders at Homestead-Miami Speedway, but a strange sequence of events opened the track for him to take the title over Carl Edwards, Joey Logano and defending champion Kyle Busch.

“There was no way on earth,” Johnson said. “I didn’t think that the race was unfolding for us like we needed it to be the champs. But we kept our heads in the game.”

Edwards was in position to win until a caution with 10 laps remaining set up a wild sequence that ruined his title hopes. Edwards tried to block Logano on the restart, wound up wrecked, and it was Johnson who drove through the wreckage to take the championship lead.

Johnson had to withstand two more restarts, including one in overtime, to score his first career victory at Homestead in the most monumental race of his career.

The title was there for the taking for Edwards until the fateful sequence that changed history.

“I was racing for my life up to that point,” he said. “I just pushed the issue as hard as I could because I figured that was the race there. I had to push it, I couldn’t go to bed tonight and think that I gave him that lane.”

Edwards felt it was important to assure Logano’s team it was just a racing incident, but he made it clear he was rooting for teammate Busch to win.

The benefactor of Edwards’ error, though, was Johnson, who had darted through the wreck ahead of Busch and Logano. Crew chief Chad Knaus pumped his fists in joy, all too aware that a dog of a night had just turned into the race of their lives.

Logano wasn’t giving up his effort, though, and headed to pit road to take on new tires for a final restart.

“This guy on a restart with five laps to go, I’ll take him every day of the week,” crew chief Todd Gordon said.

Logano restarted eighth but was a bull as he pushed his way through traffic and into third place, behind Johnson, after a caution forced another restart.

This time, Johnson got the start of his life and jumped into the lead. He didn’t look back, only forward at the history book.

“Luck came our way and we were able to win the race and win this championship,” he said.

Amos is good enough to be on the field but seems consistently unable to actually make any plays.

At some point next year or the year after, some dividends will be reaped from general manager Ryan Pace’s first two drafts, and they could be significant. There is some talent and promise to mold.

What we learned Sunday is the next six weeks will be about little more than trying to figure out which of the young players can become those keepers while the Bears continue to lose.

Injury to insult: Miller, Floyd go down in 8th loss of season

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Bears rookie Ben Braunecker said watching fellow tight end Zach Miller leave with an injury Sunday against the New York Giants “was kind of like everything stops for a moment.”

Miller hobbled to the sideline at the end of the second quarter, threw his helmet in frustration and limped to the locker room. He knew he had broken his foot.

“He had a similar injury as he had to his other foot,” coach John Fox said.

“He kind of knew right away from experience.”

Then in the fourth quarter, it was Leonard Floyd who caused everything to stop. He suffered a scary neck injury and was placed on a backboard and carted off the field. He went to the hospital, where Fox said Floyd’s movement had things looking “encouraging.”

Miller, Floyd, Josh Sitton and Cre’Von LeBlanc left the game with injuries. Four starters, adding to a season of attrition for the Bears, who fell to 2-8 in a 22-16 loss to the Giants.

Miller caught a pretty Jay Cutler pass with one hand for a 19-yard touchdown to open the scoring. A No. 1 tight end for the first time in his career, Miller was leading the team with 47 Zach Miller catches and four touchdowns.

“He’s just the nicest guy on the team,” Braunecker said. “To see him suffer any sort of injury is pretty heartbreaking.”

Braunecker, the undrafted rookie from Harvard, likely will step into a larger role at the position for the final six games.

“I’ve been preparing for this all year.

You never know when somebody is go-

ing to go down,” he said. “There aren’t that many guys on an NFL roster, so you’ve always got to be ready to step up and be the next man up.”

He can take what he’s learned from Miller to try to help an offense that was efficient in scoring on three consecutive drives to start the game but was held to 101 yards of offense after Leonard Floyd halftime.

“He’s crafty and smooth in his route running, and he has quite a few tricks of the trade in the blocking game,” Braunecker said. “You can learn a lot just by watching him move around, watching him play and watching him live.”

Floyd’s injury caused both teams to go to a knee, and it took eight minutes before play resumed as they stabilized Floyd.

“It hit us mentally and physically because that’s one of our young bucks, that’s one of our playmakers, that’s one of the guys we depend on,” Bears linebacker Pernell McPhee said. “He is a great guy, so hopefully it’s nothing serious. All prayers go out to him, and I hope he can be back soon.”

Floyd was released from the hospital and will return with the team to Chicago.

Sitton was carted off of the field with a right ankle injury. LeBlanc left the game with a concussion.

COWBOYS 27, RAVENS 17: At Arlington, Texas, Dak Prescott threw three touchdown passes, two to Dez Bryant, in the first game with Tony Romo as his backup, and the Cowboys set a franchise season record with their ninth straight win.

The Cowboys (9-1) punted on their first four possessions – a first this season – against the NFL’s No. 1 defense. They marched 92 and 88 yards on their first two drives of the second half to break a 10-10 tie. Both drives ended with TD passes to Bryant , who had six catches for 80 yards.

Romo, who broke a bone in his back in a preseason game, was active for the first time since Thanksgiving last year, and was the Dallas backup for the first time in 10 years.

The Ravens (5-5) lost to Dallas for the first time in five games in franchise history.

VIKINGS 30, CARDINALS 24: At Minneapolis, Xavier Rhodes returned one of his two interceptions 100 yards for a touchdown, and Cordarrelle Patterson took the second-half kickoff 104 yards for a score as the Vikings stopped their four-game losing streak.

The Vikings (6-4) used those momentum-shifting plays they’d been missing to hold onto a first-place tie with Detroit in the NFC North, with a rematch against the Lions looming in four days. After fueling a 5-0 start with four return touchdowns, the Vikings didn’t produce any over their past four games.

PATRIOTS 30, 49ERS 17: At Santa Clara, California, Tom Brady threw for 280 yards and four touchdowns and New England beat San Francisco in Brady’s first road game against the 49ers team he rooted for as a boy.

Brady found Danny Amendola for a 5-yard touchdown to start the fourth quarter and later hit Malcolm Mitchell on a 56-yard score for his fourth TD pass.

Brady also threw short touchdown passes to Julian Edelman and James White on his first two possessions and completed 24 of 40 passes. The AFC East-leading Patriots (8-2) bounced back from last week’s loss to the Seahawks on a rainy day at Levi’s Stadium.

BUCCANEERS 19, CHIEFS 17: At Kansas City, Missouri, Jameis Winston sliced up a Kansas City defense missing top cornerback Marcus Peters, and Tampa Bay snapped the Chiefs’ five-game winning streak.

Winston threw for 331 yards to help set up four field goals by Roberto Aguayo, and hit tight end Robert Cross for a touchdown with just over six minutes left to give the Buccaneers (5-5) a cushion.

The Chiefs (7-3) marched swiftly downfield, and Alex Smith hit Albert Wilson with a short touchdown pass with just over two minutes left. But their defense couldn’t stop Mike Evans on third-and-3 just moments later, and the big wide receiver’s sixth reception gave the Buccaneers a first down.

BILLS 16, BENGALS 12: At Cincinnati, LeSean McCoy ran 7 yards for a touchdown before suffering a thumb injury, for the Bills (5-5), who had lost three straight heading into their bye week.

consistently or make an extra point.

They also lost receiver A.J. Green to an injured right hamstring on the first pass of the game; he was taken off on a cart.

The Bills lost two of their top offensive players in the first half. Receiver Robert Woods suffered a knee injury as he was tackled after a catch. McCoy hurt his left thumb late in the half.

COLTS 24, TITANS 17: At Indianapolis, Andrew Luck led the Indianapolis Colts to a big early lead, and the defense held on in the second half. Indianapolis (5-5) evened its record by winning back-to-back games for the first time this season. The Colts climbed into second place in the AFC South.

Luck was 15 of 28 for 262 yards with two touchdowns and one interception as the Colts scored touchdowns on each of their first three possessions.

Tennessee (5-6) came back with a 3-yard TD pass from Marcus Mariota to DeMarco Murray in the final minute of the first half and a 34-yard TD pass from Mariota to Tajae Sharpe midway through the third quarter.

But the Titans never caught up.

LIONS 26, JAGUARS 19: At Detroit, Eric Ebron had a go-ahead 1-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. Ebron’s first carry of his career, a handoff as he went from left to right after lining up as an off-theline tight end, was set up by his career-long, 61-yard catch.

SEAHAWKS 26, EAGLES 15: At Seattle, Russell Wilson threw for 272 yards and a touchdown and caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Doug Baldwin, and Seattle rolled past Philadelphia.

Wilson became the first quarterback in franchise history to catch a touchdown, a perfect end-around pass from Baldwin to Seattle’s athletic QB as he ran down the left sideline and dove into the end zone to give the Seahawks (6-2-1) a 23-7 lead.

Wilson was causing headaches for the Eagles (5-4) well before his TD catch. He scrambled and threw across his body to find Jimmy Graham on a 35-yard catch-and-run touchdown in the second quarter as Seattle built a 16-7 halftime lead that was more than enough. Rookie C.J. Prosise had a 72-yard touchdown run on Seattle’s fifth offensive play – the longest run by a Seattle player since CenturyLink Field opened in 2002.

DOLPHINS 14, RAMS 10: At Los Angeles, DeVante Parker caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Tannehill with 36 seconds to play, and Miami rallied for two late scores to spoil Jared Goff’s NFL debut with a victory over Los Angeles.

Tannehill passed for 172 yards in the fifth straight victory for the Dolphins (6-4), who were dominated by the Rams’ defense until their final two drives on a rainy day at the Coliseum.

Miami barely kept alive its longest winning streak since 2008.

Goff went 17 of 31 for 134 yards in a quiet debut by the NFL’s No. 1 pick in the Rams’ 10th game of the season.

Todd Gurley scored on a 24-yard run in the first quarter for Los Angeles (4-6), but neither team managed much offense until Miami’s late surge.

CLEVELAND – Le’Veon Bell scored on a 1-yard touchdown run long after time expired in the first half, and the Pittsburgh Steelers had eight sacks while snapping a four-game losing streak with a 24-9 win Sunday over the winless Cleveland Browns.

The Steelers (5-5) scored eight points with zeroes showing on the clock before halftime after they were awarded two extra plays because of defensive penalties against the Browns (0-11). Three NFL teams previously went 0-11 before winning a game, while seven had even worse starts.

Steelers defensive tackle Javon Hargrave recovered a fumble by QB Josh McCown for a TD with 3:36 left to seal Pittsburgh’s win. The Steelers came in with a league-low 13 sacks before unloading on the Browns.

Bell finished with a season-high 146 yards rushing. Ben Roethlisberger improved to 20-2 in starts against Cleveland, still paying for not drafting the Ohio native in 2004.

WJOL, Joliet West boys tournaments begin Monday

JOLIET – The boys basketball season gets underway Monday, and eight local teams will be taking part in the WJOL Thanksgiving Classic while four area squads will be competing at the Joliet West Tigers Thanksgiving Classic.

In the WJOL tournament, three games will be played at the University of St. Francis’ Sullivan Center while another one will be played at Joliet Junior College’s Wills Gym. The action at USF gets underway at 5 p.m., when Lincoln-Way West meets Plainfield Central. Lockport takes on Minooka at 6:45 p.m., and Lemont faces Providence Catholic at 8:30 p.m. At JJC, Joliet Central plays Romeoville at 7 p.m.

Hookahs are not harmless (Note to readers: This column ran originally in November 2014.)

Dear Dr. K: You recently wrote about e-cigarettes not being safe for teens. What about hookahs? I don’t completely understand what they are. Are they OK for my teen? I think he might be smoking them.

Dear Reader: A hookah is a water pipe people use to smoke a specially made tobacco. Often the tobacco used in hookahs is flavored, which makes smoking it more attractive to some people.

A hookah uses coal to burn the tobacco.

This creates either smoke or a vapor that is inhaled through a tube. People usually smoke a hookah as a group, passing the mouthpiece from one person to another.

Hookah smoking is on the rise among youths. According to a 2014 study in the journal Pediatrics, 18 percent of high school seniors have smoked a hookah.

Hookahs have been around for centuries. In ancient Persia and Asia, smoking a hookah was considered an aristocratic and elegant thing to do. Perhaps because of this reputation -- and because it’s an ancient practice -- many people think that it isn’t as dangerous as smoking cigarettes. But it is just as dangerous, if not more so.

The smoke you inhale from a hookah contains the smoke from both coal and tobacco, which are full of toxins and cancer-causing substances. In fact, tobacco smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals, including hundreds that are toxic and about 70 that can cause cancer. The smoke also has nicotine. Nicotine, by itself, does not cause cancer -- but it is the chemical that makes people addicted to tobacco.

Smoking a hookah increases all the same health risks as smoking a cigarette.

It can lead to lung disease, cardiovascular disease, infertility, and low birth weight in the babies of women who smoke hookahs. Also, because the mouthpiece is often passed from person to person, there is the risk of passing infection.

Since hookahs are smoked as a group, the smoking session may last a while, which can lead to more exposure to the toxins. A person smoking a hookah with a group of other people not only is exposed to the smoke he deliberately sucks into his body through the tube. He is also exposed to smoke in the air around him, which typically is heavy. As a result, an hour of hookah smoking exposes someone to as much as 200 times the smoke as smoking one cigarette.

Smoking a hookah may be more appealing to teens than smoking cigarettes. First, there’s the novelty of the device itself.

Second is the fact that it’s a group activity – and it’s particularly important for teens to feel like part of a group.

Your teen may think smoking a hookah is just something fun to do with his friends.

Tell him about the health risks involved.

Be sure to let him know he and his friends could end up putting their health, even their lives, in danger if they continue the practice.

A heart to the jack, a spade to the nine and 10, a heart through and a second spade at trick seven give the defenders five hearts and six spades for down seven!

Finally, note that if East were in four hearts, after South leads the diamond ace, North should signal with his queen. Then South continues with a low diamond for the killing club-queen shift.
