Perhaps at some point in my naive youth, I aspired to be an elite, out-oftouch media member who could peer down on my fellow Americans from a tower of ivory that I assumed would be furnished with an elevator and a wet bar.

That wasn’t in the cards for me, or really anyone I’ve known over a few decades in journalism. Perhaps sweating my way through northwestern Indiana steel mills, oil refineries and other bastions of progressive liberalism so I could afford a state university journalism education obstructed my path to Enlightenment.

From my lofty perch, an apartment above a garage, it wasn’t as easy as I expected to gather as many quarters as I needed each week to mingle with the rest of the Illuminati at the laundromat.

In the wake of Donald Trump’s election, there will be weeks, months and perhaps years of elite media self-flagellation. But eventually, journalists will have to forgo navel gazing and get back to covering the news. Even the worst pollsters know there will be plenty of that.

Is the national media too liberal?

Generally, yes, of course it is. But let’s be more selective in our definition of “media.” It’s been that way for many years. That doesn’t mean that the bulk of stories aren’t accurate. And shouldn’t

talk to readers every day. I hear from them by telephone, email, in person, via social media and often at the grocery store, church, youth sporting events – even my own front yard.

Count me as surprised as many with the national election results, but nothing surprised us locally. The writing was on the walls for Sen. Mark Kirk. No significant surprises. I can’t pretend to have my finger on the pulse of Ohio, Florida or Pennsylvania.

While I don’t live above a garage anymore, my ivory tower is a typical suburban home that gets hit with the same kind of property taxes that my readers face. My fellow editors’ and my kids go to your schools, and we commute along the same roads. We never get invited to the Mainstream Media Conspiracy Meetings.

We’ll stick with you if you stick with us. We don’t have a bubble or a safe space. We’re not out of touch. We care about our country and our communities just as much as you do. And we’re counting on you to keep us that way.

we question whether alt-right or alt-left news sources are the best solution to that problem?

Was the national press wrong in its prediction for this election? Obviously, even Trump’s own pollsters were wrong and he was already “rigging” excuses in case he lost.

Were the national press derelict in their duties during this campaign? That’s a hard question to answer. Everything everyone had fought about had been reported by the national media. Too much attention on this, too little attention on that. Those are fair and deserved criticisms.

Media members are accused of sticking to a narrative, but modern readers and viewers find their own headlines and tailored news sources to spin events according to their desired flavors. Citizens, in effect, create their own narratives, their own bubbles.

For local media members, it’s a little different. We couldn’t be isolated from our readers even if we wanted to be. We

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Brad Frankenfield suffers from knee pain from his time in the U.S. Army and is considering another way to find relief – medical marijuana.

Frankenfield was one of a dozen or so people who came to the Veterans Assistance Commission of Will County on Tuesday to learn more about the medication from PharmaCannis and how to become eligible to receive treatment.

Frankenfield said he’s taken a lowgrade opioid to manage pain from his knees from injuries he suffered in the military when he dropped out of planes. He said he would consider taking medical marijuana in the future.

“The point is, there’s other things out there,” he said.

Representatives from PharmaCannis, a medical marijuana provider under the Illinois Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act, were invited to the VAC to educate residents on the medicine, the history of marijuana and the stigmas associated with it.

The company is the largest supplier of medical marijuana in Illinois, with dispensaries in Evanston, Schaumburg, North Aurora and Ottawa. It also has cultivation centers in Dwight and Hillcrest.

“I can stand up here all day and all afternoon telling stories about people who went from [taking] 10 Vicodins

and four Oxycontins to, three months later, just using cannabis for relief,” said Mike Richards, PharmaCannis new patient engagement representative.

Richards told his own story to the audience of how he came to use the treatment. He said he suffered from stomach pains and was prescribed pills by doctors for relief, but his situation became worse.

He was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, an autoimmune disorder, and made a decision to use medical marijuana. He said he’s been managing his condition and functioning ever since.

“I have good days and I have bad days. These conditions that we talk about, these are not little coughs and

colds. These are life-changing, altering conditions. … [Medical marijuana] helps us manage. That’s what it’s all about – having another management tool out there,” Richards said.

Richards explained the difference between the use of cannabidiol, or CBD, and tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, in medical marijuana treatment.

CBD can have the same therapeutic effects as THC without the psychoactive effects, or the high.

But a high from THC can be medicinal. Richards said it can help, for example, a cancer patient tolerate “one more bite of soup” because their nausea is horrible from treatments.

Man found guilty of involuntary manslaughter

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A jury on Tuesday found a Joliet man guilty of involuntary manslaughter for fatally beating his mentally disabled brother-in-law.

Francis “Frank” Zabala, 55, faced up to 60 years in prison for inflicting injuries that killed Robert Meredith Jr. on Sept. 22, 2013, but a jury of 10 men and two women did not find he did so intentionally. The sentence for involuntary manslaughter is typically two to 10 years in prison, but because

Joliet promises Gold Star mother better display of flag

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Flying the flag right was the focus of the City Council on Tuesday night.

Facing criticism that the city has let tattered U.S. flags fly under dim lights at night at 10 monuments around Joliet, officials said they would buy new flags and install better lighting.

“You don’t wait until a flag is tattered or torn until you replace it,” local Gold Star mother Denise Meehan told the council.

Proper flying of the flag has been an issue off and on for years. The city has 10 landscaped monument sites marked with the city of Joliet logo and containing flagpoles with flags.

But only a couple have hard-wired electricity, making it difficult to ensure property lighting when flags fly at night.

Meehan provided the city with information about solar lighting designed for just such situations, and council members instructed City Manager Jim Hock to buy the lights, estimated to cost about $10,000, and replace tattered flags.

“This is something we have to make a commitment that we do right,” Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said.

Meehan said that when the body of her son, Pfc. Andrew Meari, was brought back from Afghanistan where he was killed in 2010, thousands of people lined the streets in Joliet.

“Most of those people had flags,” Meehan told the council. “What that tells you is this is important to the community.”

City budget

The flag matter was the most discussed topic of the night as the council also agreed to vote on the 2017 budget at its next regular meeting on Dec. 6.

The budget does not contain any money for the Rialto Square Theatre, which has asked for $500,000. Council members only discussed Rialto funding at its first budget meeting, when theater representatives made a case for giving the money.

Councilman Michael Turk suggested the council may give Rialto funding another look at its Dec. 5 workshop meeting.

“We have the request from the Rialto,” Turk said. “I think we have to respond to them one way or another.”

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk asked Turk if he was willing to raise taxes or go deeper into debt to fund the Rialto.

Turk said the city could consider using its reserve funds.

The budget project a $7 million deficit at the end of 2017, although council members noted at a Monday meeting that the city typically projects deficits because of conservative budgeting while ending the year with surpluses.

Hospital TIF

The council approved a Jan. 3 public hearing for the proposed tax increment financing redevelopment area around Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center.

The TIF district would provide property tax incentives to encourage redevelopment of property in the business community surrounding the hospital. The council tentatively is scheduled to vote Jan. 17 on the proposal.

The beating occurred while Meredith was watching TV with Frank and Janice, but was not behaving and was sent to “sit in time out.” When Meredith urinated on his clothes and the carpet, Frank Zabala got a carpet cleaner and tried to force him to clean it up.

Meredith refused and Zabala retrieved a wooden stick, which he used to strike him on the back before sending him to sit in a chair.

Frank Zabala testified Monday that he “lost it” when Meredith chuckled

at not having to clean it up and Zabala punched him several times in the back. Meredith went to the bathroom again but then collapsed, Janice Zabala testified.

Meredith was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, where he died from an apparent heart attack, but police were called when hospital personnel noticed extensive bruising to his back. A forensic pathologist last week testified broken ribs caused Meredith’s death.

“It was wrong on my part, I know,” Zabala said during his testimony.

NEW LENOX – The New Lenox Fire Protection District is collecting items for Toys for Tots, according to a district news release.

Residents can drop off new, unwrapped toys at each of its four fire stations.

Collection will continue through Dec. 9.

The mission of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children.

ROMEOVILLE – Blain’s Farm and Fleet is proud to introduce its Kids Helping Kids program in Romeoville, according to a Blain’s news release.

As of last month through Christmas, customers can donate new, unwrapped toys for kids in need at the Romeoville Blain’s location, 451 S. Weber Road, and Blain’s will match up to $200,000 in toys across the communities that Blain’s stores serve.

Lockport, Plainfield police remind residents to drive safe during Thanksgiving season

The Lockport Police Department and the Plainfield Police Department are joining in a national effort, along with

the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police and other local law enforcement agencies across the state to enforce seat belt and impaired driving laws, according to news releases from the two departments.

People traveling during the days surrounding Thanksgiving are reminded to buckle up and to designate a sober driver.

“Our goal is to save lives and keep travelers safe this holiday and always, so we will be out enforcing these laws, day and night,” Lockport Sgt. Brian Phelan said in the Lockport news release.

Santa to come to Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet

JOLIET – Chicagoland Speedway fans can join Santa Claus for pictures from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 3 in the Gatorade Victory Lane at the Speedway, 500 Speedway Blvd., Joliet, to benefit its nonprofit charitable entity, Racing Advocates for Community Enrichment, according to a Speedway news release.

Downloadable high-resolution images of each fan picture with Santa Claus will be available at http://bit.ly/ SantaVL2016 and personal cameras are welcome as well. Admission to the Gatorade Victory Lane for pictures with Santa is $10.

Students deliver 300 food items to Forest Park Community Center

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Forest Park Community Center received hundreds of food items from students who are part of the Kindness Club at a nearby school.

The students on Tuesday afternoon walked from Forest Park Individual Education School to the community center bearing bags of food that were just in time for Thanksgiving donations. About 300 food items were given to the center.

“Hi, everybody,” Bettye Gavin, the center’s executive director and a Joliet city councilwoman said, to the crowd of students. “Thank you all so much and thanks for your giving. Boy, you guys are amazing!”

Angie Kot, a second-grade teacher, told Gavin the students were part of the Kindness Club, which tries to spread kindness throughout Joliet and the community. The students were also joined

by Jacob Darley, the principal of Forest Park school.

Gavin said that in recent years the center has received canned goods and nonperishable food items from students

at the school. The center plans to give out food and turkeys Wednesday, she said.

“This is perfect timing,” she said.

After the students unloaded the food on the table at the center, they stood around it to have their picture taken.

“Say kindness!” said Gavin, who took a picture.

“Kindness,” the students yelled.

Kot said the Forest Park school follows the four R’s: responsibility, respect, resourcefulness and responsiveness, which were developed by psychologist Raymond Corsini. The school is based on the education philosophy of psychiatrist Alfred Adler.

The Kindness Club was created to be responsive in the community, she said.

One way the students thought to be responsive was through a food drive.

She said the initial goal was 100 items, but the school was motivated to bring 300 items. “[The students] don’t get rewarded for this. It’s just from the kindness of their hearts. They just feel good doing something where they’re giving back to the community,” Kot said.

Mobile meth lab explodes in Morris laundromat

bstanley@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A mobile meth lab exploded Tuesday morning inside a Morris laundromat, and two suspects have been charged.

The incident occurred about 7:50 a.m. at the Wash ’N Dry at 531 Bedford Road. There were no injuries reported.

Morris Police Chief John Severson said surveillance video shows people coming into the business with items that could be used to “cook” methamphetamine. The laundromat is open around the clock, but does not always have staff on the premises.

“It appears they came into the business to have a controlled environment, but when they started cooking, things went bad and it exploded,” Severson said. “They dumped it outside and fled.”

At 11:30 a.m., officers located two people matching the description of the subjects in the video walking near Bedford Road and Black Street in Morris.

Jonathan Walters, 39, of Minooka, and Nicole Gonzalez, 41, of Morris, were questioned and then arrested on charges of possession of methamphetamine materials.

They were booked into the Grundy County Jail.

Severson said Tuesday night that additional charges were pending.

Firefighters did not find any fire at the scene of the explosion, but they did find what appeared to be a damaged lunchbox just outside the business.

Before surveillance video was located, police were unsure of the contents of the lunchbox.

Police canvassed the area for evidence and potential witnesses, Severson said. The Kane County Bomb Squad was called while police cordoned off the area and diverted traffic.

After the device was determined not to be an explosive, agents of the Joliet Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad were called out to clean up the debris.

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – An Indiana truck driver pleaded guilty Tuesday to causing a 2014 crash on Interstate 55 that killed five people.

Francisco Espinal-Quiroz, 53, made a “blind plea” to Judge Daniel Rozak to five counts of reckless homicide and one count of falsifying his logbook. Espinal-Quiroz of Leesburg faces a sentence of at least six years. Prosecutors have agreed to cap Francisco their recommendation Espinal-Quiroz at 15 years in exchange for the guilty plea.

The judge who will sentence Espinal-Quiroz on Feb. 15 is not bound by the plea deal and could sentence him to up to 28 years in prison. After Rozak accepted Espinal-Quiroz’s guilty plea, he transferred the case to Judge Dave Carlson because Rozak will retire at the end of the year.

At 2:15 p.m. July 21, 2014, Espinal-Quiroz was traveling 15 mph over

the speed limit when his red Freightliner slammed into three vehicles backed up in the northbound lanes while traffic was stalled by construction work on the Des Plaines River bridge in Channahon Township. Espinal-Quiroz had the cruise control set at 65 mph, according to the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office.

The truck struck a 2012 Kia Soul occupied by Timothy Osburn, 64, Kimberly K. Britton, 43, and Piper Britton, 11, all of Urbana; a 2008 Dodge Avenger occupied by Vicky L. Palacios, 54, of Coal City; and a 2000 Chevrolet Astrovan in which Ulrike Blopleh, 48, of Channahon, was a passenger.

Four people died at the scene or a short time later, while Osburn died from his injuries 16 days later.

Espinal-Quiroz told police at the scene that he started work at 2:30 a.m. picking up steel from a South Bend, Indiana, warehouse. According to the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office, Espinal-Quiroz wrote in his logbook he’d started that morning at 6:15 a.m.

NEW LENOX – The New Lenox Village Board is considering an amendment to its recreational vehicles ordinance, which will allow residents to park more than one recreation vehicle on their driveways during half the year.

The ordinance was presented for consideration Monday to the board of trustees. The Planning Commission voted on the ordinance Oct. 18, reaching a 3-2 vote in favor of denying the change, Assistant Village Administrator Robin Ellis said.

With the new language, the ordinance will allow any combination of a mobile home, travel trailer, boat or other recreation vehicles to be stored on a hard surface driveway as long as one vehicle is being used to tow the other, Ellis said.

For example, a trailer carrying a boat that is hitched to a mobile home would be considered one recreation vehicle, and therefore allowed to be parked on the driveway as long as

there is no encroachment onto the sidewalk or street.

Currently, the ordinance allows one such vehicle to be parked on a driveway April 1 to Oct. 31. From Nov. 1 to March 31, RVs have to be parked on a sideyard or backyard and screened completely from view. The current ordinance also prohibits parking these vehicles on a public street at all times.

Trustee Annette Bowden said she was in favor of the amendment as she herself uses RVs frequently during the summer and fall months, and that storing vehicles in storage facilities can be “costly.”

Trustee David Butterfield voiced an opposing view, saying that he was concerned that too many large vehicles obstructed line of sight, adding, “ I don’t want to encourage any more than I have to.”

The motion will come for approval at the board’s Nov. 28 meeting.

aschier@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – It’s time for Operation Care Package’s big holiday push to remind soldiers abroad that their sacrifices are appreciated, and Crest Hill has gotten the ball rolling with the recent donation of 4,000 cards.

The cards, along with 150 postal boxes decorated for the season, were presented to the area nonprofit last week at Crest Hill’s City Council meeting.

“It’s just a great city effort,” said City Clerk Vicki Hackney, whose office oversees the undertaking.

For several years, the clerk’s office has collected the cards, which are donated by city residents and employees, as well as elected officials, and filled with messages of support by volunteers.

The cards then go to Operation Care Package. The volunteer-sustained organization started more than a decade ago when former Joliet resident Debbie Bennett was sending care packages

Bennett’s brother asked Bennett if she could also send packages to a few of his fellow soldiers who hadn’t received any, and the endeavor took off from there.

Throughout most of the year, Operation Care Package, which is now based in Manhattan, sends about 150 packages per week, but during the holidays, its volunteers try to send cards and packages to every soldier in their database – estimated by Rau to be more than 5,000 members of the military.

The holiday care packages, Rau said, include cards; a stuffed stocking;

toiletries; food and candy; holiday décor, such as mini Christmas trees and ornaments; and a small wrapped gift, such as a CD, DVD or hat and scarf set.

Rau said Operation Care Package was happy to receive Crest Hill’s many cards.

“It was wonderful of them,” she said.

One participant in Crest Hill’s effort who was particularly excited to give back to the soldiers was 8-year-old Pilar Gonzalez, the daughter of Alderwoman Claudia Gazal, Hackney said.

Pilar signed 800 cards; decorated the 150 postal boxes, which will be filled with gifts and necessities for care package recipients; and gave a speech at the Nov. 7 council meeting.

Also at that meeting, the council approved a $100 donation to assist with the postage costs for the cards and boxes, Hackney said.

The undertaking is led by clerk’s office employee Laurie Thrasher, Hackney said. This year’s 4,000 cards marked a new record for the office, but next year, its goal is to give 5,000.

LOCAL BRIEFS GOOSE LAKE TOWNSHIP – Fire struck a house at 3835 Candyland Lane on Tuesday.

A woman was home at the time but got out of the house without injury, said Lt. Nick Doerfler with the Coal City Fire Protection District.

The fire was first reported at 3:43 p.m.

Damage to the house and contents was estimated at $200,000, Doerfler said. The fire itself was contained by firefighters, but there was smoke damage throughout the house, he said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation by Mutual Aid Box System Division 15 as of 5 p.m. Tuesday. Thirteen fire departments responded to the fire.

PLAINFIELD – People who recently bought a Lucky Day Lotto ticket in Plainfield may want to check it, according to a news release from the Illinois Lottery.

A grocery store in Plainfield sold a $75,000 winning Lucky Day Lotto ticket for the most recent Friday evening

drawing. There were two winning tickets for that drawing. The second $75,000 winning ticket was sold in Indian Head Park.

The unclaimed winning Quick Pick ticket of the split jackpot was bought at Jewel-Osco, 13460 S. Route 59, in Plainfield, and matched all five numbers – 3, 6, 31, 33 and 43 – to win a $75,000 prize in the Friday evening drawing, the news release stated. Richards said the number of people who’ve died from marijuana – compared with opioids – is zero because it doesn’t affect a person’s brain stem or respiratory system the same way.

When it comes to administering medical marijuana – inhalation, oral absorption, ingestion or topical – he said it’s best to go low and slow. “[It’s] figuring out what we like to call your ‘therapeutic threshold’ or the least amount of cannabis you need for the most amount of therapeutic benefit,” he said.

Kristi McNichol, superintendent for the VAC of Will County, said she invited PharmaCannis to give a presentation because the education on medical marijuana is significantly lacking in society.

Besides hearing from veterans about the benefits of the treatment, she said her sister-in-law’s father was diagnosed with cancer and medical marijuana helped him with the pain.

“That’s truly my whole purpose of doing this. No. 1, because I’ve seen it work on physical illness and, No. 2, the lack of education out there,” McNichol said.

Causes for back pain — and pain in other areas of the body — vary, including accidents; sports injuries; repetitive strain, such as heavy lifting; scoliosis; a herniated disk, arthritis, pregnancy, infection; tumors; or muscle tension, according to verywell.com.

There are a number of different ways of treating back pain, and pain in other parts of the body, as well. Ultrasound therapy is one of them.

Ultrasound therapy uses ultrasonic waves or sound waves of a high frequency too high for the human ear to hear. An ultrasound machine produces a mechanical vibration in what is called a treatment head that is moved continuously over the surface of the skin on the injured area, usually 3 to 5 minutes, transmitting the energy into the tissues, according to sportsinjuryclinic.com.

Lower frequency ultrasound penetrates more deeply, for deep injuries, and higher frequency doses are used for pain closer to the surface of skin.

As the ultrasound waves pass from the treatment head into the skin they cause the vibration of the surrounding tissues, particularly those that contain collagen. This vibration causes the production of heat within the tissue. The temperature increase helps to reduce pain and muscle spasm and promote the healing process, says sportsinjuryclinic.com.

One of the greatest benefits of ultrasound therapy is that it is thought to reduce the healing time in soft tissues by attracting more mast cells (important in wound healing) to the site of injury, thereby reducing inflammation and increasing blood flow.

Ultrasound is also believed to stimulate the production of more collagen which is the main protein component in soft tissue like tendons and ligaments. It accelerates tissue healing, reducing scar tissue.

The hospital plans to build a 13,800-square-foot outpatient surgery center on four acres. The center would have three operating rooms and is estimated to cost $11 million.

Board trustees are also considering a development agreement with the hospital regarding the use for the new facility of an existing trunk sewer, which services the hospital and

bound Interstate 55 near Harlem Avenue.

The Illinois State Police is working with Will County State’s Attorney’s Office for prosecutorial review.

The suspect has been released and charged with only traffic offenses at this time.

After election rupture, CEOs seek unity for staff, customers

The Associated Press NEW YORK – Apple CEO Tim Cook is telling his employees to “keep moving forward.” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is saying “progress does not move in a straight line.” T-Mobile’s CEO John Legere tweeted “let’s see what an out of the box, non-typical, non-politician can do for America!”

CEOs of major companies are taking stands about the results of the election – a departure from the traditional model of not mixing politics with business that major brands have long espoused.

Some are using it as an opportunity to bring their employees together following a divisive election campaign.

Others are using it as an opportunity to stress their companies’ values and mission, or an opportunity to make nice with Trump, who many CEOs were publicly against during the campaign.

The men and women who head the nation’s biggest companies know that having a hostile relationship with the Trump administration could make doing business difficult. They also know

that they operate in liberal bastions such as New York and San Francisco just as much as in Trump-leaning places such as Fort Wayne, Indiana, or Charleston, West Virginia.

“Neutral is the best policy,” says John Challenger, CEO of workplace consultant Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

T-Mobile’s Legere, who long was vocally opposed to Trump, congratulated the president-elect on Twitter for his victory last week, while holding off on judging the president-elect’s policies.

Meanwhile another telecommunications executive, Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure, himself an immigrant and personally opposed to Trump, sent an email to employees saying that “it’s our obligation to accept the will of our fellow Americans and respect the new leader.”

It’s possible that Legere and Claure made nice because the president appoints the chairman and commissioners of the Federal Communications Commission, an agency that holds

Q. My husband of forty years died suddenly several weeks ago. He was 62 years old.

He did not have a Will. Our children are all adults. What do I do about our house, the car, etc ... ?

A. First of all, you should set up an appointment with your attorney. Second, there are some general things you should know: Contrary to what you may have heard on late-night-t.v.-avoid-probate ads, “the State” does not take everything if your husband died without a Will.

Most probably your home is held in “joint-tenancy” or “tenancy by the entirety”.

“Joint-tenancy” means you both own 100% of your real estate and upon your husband’s death the whole 100% becomes yours. “Tenancy-bythe-entirety”is used to protect your homestead from creditors.

You both own 100% of your home and certain creditors (not including the company holding the mortgage on your home) are barred from foreclosing on your home as long as you continue to reside in the home. In either case, there is nothing you need to do with the title of your home right now.

If sometime in the future you decide to sell your home, you will need to complete an affidavit of deceased joint tenant. This affidavit will be prepared as part of the closing documents.

Since you have been married for forty years, I presume that most all your assets such as bank accounts, investments, the car and any other real estate was owned by you and your husband as joint tenants. If that is true all this property becomes yours at your husband’s death. You may wish to inform your bank ofhis death. If you sell the car, the SM-CL0392449

Secretary of State’s Bureau of Motor Vehicles will require a certified copy of your husband’s death certificate and will also ask you to complete some of their forms to transfer title.

If your late husband had life insurance, call the insurance company and ask them to send you the forms necessary to cash in or reinvest the proceeds of his life insurance.

HOWEVER, if your husband died with real estate or the car or other assets such as bank accounts, investments, stocks, bonds in his name only, then be aware that under Section 2-l (a) of the Illinois Probate Act of 1975, 1/2 of this property goes to you and 1/2 is to be divided equally among your children. It is at this point that you definitely need to see your attorney. He or she will advise you about the documents you need to prepare to divide these assets.

If the assets in your late husband’s name only are under $100,000.00 in value, then a Small Estate Affidavit may be prepared to properly divide these assets. If these assets (in your late husband’s name only) are over $100,000.00 you may need to probate your late husband’s estate. If you own real estate outside the State of Illinois, such as a condo in Florida or a cabin in Wisconsin, then you will need to talk with a lawyer in that state. I’m sure you are not in an emotional condition to deal with all this right now. So do the following: 1. Take one day at a time. 2.

Hire an experienced probate, estate-planning or elder law attorney to handle all these problems. 3. If you don’t have one, then call me or my partner, Jennifer Lynch. 4. And for heaven’s sake, don’t sign anything important without talking with an attorney!!

PART OF A “PPP”, WHAT IS THIS ABOUT?

In 2011, a number of pro-employer changes were made to the

Workers’ Compensation Act. One of them was the creation of the right for the employers to belong to a “Preferred Provider Program,” hence “PPP.” Before the changes the employee had the right to go for emergency care, and then see two lines of doctors of his own choosing. Any doctor would be in the line as long as it was the result of a referral from the first doctor to start the line, or any other referral within the line.

Recently, some of the major workers’ compensation insurance carriers have created these PPP’s and placed their insured, the employers, within them.

By the terms of the policy, apparently, employer consent was not needed. and the law requires he execute a written form to do so. If done, however, then the employee is limited to only one line of doctors as opposed to two, so the first doctor he/she sees beyond emergency care, as well as any

In addition to making sure there is compliance with the form and that the right to the one line of doctors is wisely executed, the lawyer may also be able to help finding a good doctor within the PPP who is more of a patient advocate, as some doctors are. But many, especially those in these types of programs are not. Every employee has the right to proceed on his own workers’ compensation claim without an attorney, but now there are more pitfalls than ever.

A. Despite the fact that your injuries were the result of an accident, YOU are the one receiving the treatment. Therefore, the bills associated with that treatment are your responsibility. Plus, if you submit them to your health insurance, you get the benefit of the reduced amounts negotiated between the doctors and the health insurance companies.

While it seems wrong to pay when it wasn’t your fault, it is actually to your benefit to do so.

First, as stated above, you get the benefit of the discounts (many doctors will try to talk you out of using your insurance because financially it benefits them. They will try to collect the full amount of the bills. Unfortunately, they will try to collect it from you if there isn’t enough money from the Defendant’s insurance, victimizing you twice. First from the accident, second from the financial burden caused by not using your health insurance) Second, you keep your credit rating protected.

The fact is that if your case has to be filed and proceeds through the court system, it will take time to resolve. Payment may not be enough to cover the full medical. Even if it is enough, it can be years after the treatment was done. The doctor or facility may not want to wait that long.

They can put you in collections! Even if you pay installments, you are doing so on a larger amount, due to the loss of the discount your insurance has; if enough time has passed, you may have lost your option to submit the bills and be forever stuck with the larger amount. Installment payments can also affect your credit if a payment is missed due to financial hardship.

Why take the risk? Use your health insurance. Third, when negotiating the value of your case, paid bills are assumed to be reasonable. Unpaid bills are not. So negotiating becomes easier.

If you need to go to trial, paid bills are admissible as reasonable without further testimony.

If they are unpaid, one has to have a witness testify as to their reasonableness. This adds to the cost of trial and comes out of your proceeds. It is the goal of your attorney to get your bills paid and put the most money in your pocket as compensation for your injuries.

The best way to do this is to pay your medical bills as they occur. Not only does this reduce the costs of a trial, help keep you credit rating and lower the amount of the bills, it shows a potential jury you took responsibility for your recovery. This opens up the ability to argue that like you took responsibility in getting better, the defendant needs to take responsibility for causing your injuries! Part of that responsibility is for him/her to reimburse for your medical bills and to compensate for the pain & suffering. A jury can easily follow that train of thought and conclude that you, the injured party, in entitled to full compensation. Take control. Get your bills paid at the best rate possible. Don’t let yourself be victimized twice!

QUICK NEWS Millsdale Road in Joliet closed at railroad crossing west of Route 53 JOLIET – The Union Pacific Railroad is reconstructing the railroad crossing at Millsdale Road west of Route 53 in order to install a new rail line for highspeed rail and complete improvements to the gates and flashers, according to a news release from the city of Joliet.

The project is anticipated to end on or before Dec. 14.

A detour route is posted using Route 53, Laraway Road and Centerpoint Way. Drivers are advised to exercise caution and seek alternate routes when traveling in the area.

JOLIET – The city of Joliet’s Roadways Division will be performing removals of trees infested with the emerald ash borer between 6:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday in the Theodore Crossings, Olde Renwick Trail, Cambridge Run and Stone Creek subdivisions, according to a city news release.

The Roadways Division will have four seven-man crews working. There are more than 500 trees in the subdivisions, and not all of them will be removed over the weekend. The Roadways Division crews will return at a later date to perform stump grinding.

NEW LENOX – This holiday season, the New Lenox Fire Protection District’s four fire stations will each display a large wreath with all red lights, according to a district news release.

The wreaths serve as a reminder for residents to be safe when decorating for the holidays and are part of the “Keep the Wreath Red” fire safety campaign, a statewide program that reminds everyone to practice fire safety during the holiday season.

For each fire caused by holiday decorations, the district will replace one red bulb with a white bulb.

The wreaths will be on each of New Lenox’s fire stations from Nov. 25 through Jan. 1.

To help the district “Keep the Wreath Red,” fire officials recommend following a few easy safety tips: • Unplug holiday lights before leaving home or sleeping.

• Do not overload extension cords.

• Be careful with candles and open flames.

• Use flame-retardant decorations.

• Ensure lights are in good condition and Underwriters Laboratories listed.

• Keep natural trees watered; do not rely on chemical sprays to make a tree flame resistant.

People should also check all smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in their homes.

In a postelection email to employees, Apple CEO Cook didn’t mention Trump by name but acknowledged that many people had strong feelings about the outcome of the vote. Cook had let it be known during the campaign that he didn’t support Trump, although he generally avoided taking a public stance on the candidates. Cook didn’t mention encryption, which he has previously argued is essential to protect consumers’ privacy.

But he added, “While there is discussion today about uncertainties ahead, you can be confident that Apple’s North Star hasn’t changed.”

Microsoft’s chief executive was more conciliatory. In a post on LinkedIn, the social networking site that Microsoft is buying, Satya Nadella wrote: “We congratulate the president-elect, and look forward to working with all those elected yesterday.” But Nadella added that Microsoft is committed to “fostering a diverse and inclusive

culture.”

Facebook’s Zuckerberg, who had previously criticized Trump’s call for building a wall on the Mexican border, sounded subdued in a post on his own social network.

“I thought about all the work ahead of us to create the world we want for our children,” he wrote. “This work is bigger than any presidency and progress does not move in a straight line.”

The most combative response came from the CEO at Grubhub, an online food delivery service based in Chicago. Matt Maloney said in an email to employees that he rejects Trump’s “nationalist, anti-immigrant and hateful politics,” adding that anyone who disagrees should immediately resign “because you have no place here.”

Maloney later backtracked in a tweet that said “Grubhub does not tolerate hate and we are proud of all our employees – even those who voted for Trump.”

Other companies have taken the election and its aftermath as a marketing opportunity, most notably airlines. British Airways ran ads on Facebook urging people to visit London, using the tag line “had enough of this house?” under a photo of the White House. Air New Zealand ran ads on Instagram and elsewhere highlighting the results of the election and inviting people to visit New Zealand. Spirit Airlines promoted a 75 percent off sale for flights to Canada.

CEOs of automakers, including Ford’s Mark Fields, have also struck a conciliatory tone, partly because Trump has called for the repeal or renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement, which has allowed the automakers to set up shop in Mexico tariff-free.

Many CEOs publicly expressed hope that the tensions dividing the country will diminish, and that American consumers will set aside their fears and get back to what they do best: shop.

“We are hoping that in the postelection we are just going to see people ready to spend,” said Marvin Ellison, CEO of JCPenney.

CEOs and companies that try to bring people together are “going to be the winners,” said Dr. Larry Chiagouris, a marketing professor at Pace University’s Lubin School of Business. “That always works better from a brand perspective,” he said.

Wall Street, which donated heavily to Hillary Clinton, also now faces an administration that could provide both profit and peril.

Trump has said he wants to roll

back some of the regulations in the Dodd-Frank law that was passed after the financial crisis, a move that would benefit big Wall Street banks.

But the Republican Party’s platform also contains a provision calling for the return of the Glass-Steagall Act, a Great Depression-era law that broke up big banks.

There’s talk of a massive, $1 trillion infrastructure program that could rely on tax credits to private funding sources. Many of those programs will require Wall Street’s army of investment bankers and lawyers to help underwrite and finance.

“The president-elect’s commitment to infrastructure spending, government reform and tax reform – among other things – will be good for growth and, therefore, will be good for our clients and for our firm,” said Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein, according to a transcript of a voicemail he sent companywide.

In an email to his employees, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon said the election of Trump shows “the frustration that so many people have with the lack of economic opportunity and the challenges they face.”

Ron retired in March 2011 from Dutch Farms (formally Joliet Butter Company). He enjoyed researching his family tree through genealogy, working outside in the yard and making woodworking crafts.

Ron’s biggest joy was just spending time with his family.

Daniel J. Ruffatto Sr., my dad, died unexpectedly on Nov 13th while doing something he loved. He was riding his Harley and feeling the sun on his face and the wind on his back.

My dad was a fighter. He fought to overcome injuries sustained in a snowmobile accident. They said he had a 5% chance of living but he came out on top. He fought Leukemia over the last three years and came out on top. We all thought he was Superman, and he was OUR Superman. That all changed when God decided to call you home and we will never know the reasons why. You are now free from any future pain and suffering and free to RIDE. My dad learned to live life to the fullest surrounded by family and friends that he loved.

He didn’t go anywhere he couldn’t make a friend. He loved people and talking with them, he loved adventure and was the life of the party wherever he went. He loved his crazy cats who kept him company when no one was home. We all have videos that prove it.

HE had a zest for life with a smile that could light up a room and a twinkle in his eyes full of mischief and fun. He could make anyone’s bad day into a good one. We will remember his larger than life personality, his stupid jokes and his love for his family.

He graduated from Lockport Township High School with the Class of 1983. He married Barbi Liker from Plainfield on March 23, 1991. They moved to Coal City and raised two beautiful children, Tori and Danny Jr. He worked at Plainfield Stamping for many years until the plant closed. He then started his own online Power Sports Business. You would think he owned a junk yard. He was doing something he loved. His passion for toys, motors, gears and people ignited this man.

People came from all over or would just show up. He worked on snowmobiles, jet skis, cars, motorcycles you name it. He never turned anyone way and could fix just about anything.

He was a genuine soul who touched so any lives. We will always remember the “Gooch” who lived life Full Throttle.

Raymond I. Kolmodin went home to be with the Lord peacefully with his family by his side, Sunday, November 13, 2016, age 95 years.

Survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Irene Kolmodin (nee Brisco) of Joliet; two daughters, Sheila (Jerry) Lundeen of Minooka and Nancy (Mike) Fiske of Joliet; six grandchildren, Brad (Jessie) Lundeen, Jeff (Sarah) Lundeen, Mandy (Jimmy) Ward, Kevin (Susan) Fiske, Mark (Erin) Fiske, Laura Fiske; and ten great-grandchildren; His brother-in-law, Derek Brisco; and also many loving nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents, Axel and Hilma Kolmodin; his in-laws, William and Elsie Brisco; a daughter, Diane Brunke; two brothers, Walter (Grace) Kolmodin and Norman (Barbara) Kolmodin; and three sisters, Evelyn (Gordon) Potter, Doris (Herb) Johnson and Ruth Pozesky.

Raymond was born April 15, 1921 in Lockport, IL, to Swedish immigrants. Growing up in Lockport, Ray attended Taft School and Lockport High School Class of 1939, where he learned to play the flute in the historic Lockport band program under the direction of Ernie Caneva.

Ray also enjoyed playing the piano. Being the son of a machinist, Ray used the skills he learned from his father to serve his country during World War II as a T3 Staff Sergeant in the United States Army. While stationed in England and France during WWII, Ray served as a section chief, heavy artillery mechanic and bandsman. It was there in England that he met and married his loving wife of 71 years Irene Brisco Kolmodin.

After receiving an honorable discharge from the Army, Ray worked for 31 years at Caterpillar Tractor Company in Joliet, where he retired as a tool designer. He was a member of Willow Avenue Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder, and presently was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Ray enjoyed keeping in close contact with members of the 3572nd ordinance of the United States Army throughout his life.

Due to his love of music, Ray was an avid supporter of the local arts within the Joliet area. He especially loved attending his son-in-law’s band concerts. He loved to play golf, loved photography, enjoyed doing projects around the house and working in his yard. His deepest love was for his family. Ray was a devoted husband, kind and loving father, cherished grandfather and great-grandfather and faithful friend.

Dems, GOP remain far apart in budget talks

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan suggested Tuesday that legislators should approve another short-term spending plan without giving in to any of Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s demands, indicating the ideological divide behind the state’s epic budget stand persisted through the bruising election season.

The Democrat made the comments after meeting with Rauner and other GOP leaders for the first time since Election Day, when the Republicans picked up enough seats in the state House to leave Democrats four votes shy of the supermajority they’d need to override the governor’s vetoes.

The Democrats lost two Senate seats but still have a veto-proof majority in that chamber.

Responding to Madigan’s comments, Republican leaders said they won’t agree to another partial spending plan and that Rauner’s call for business-friendly, union-weakening measures needs to be part of the discussions. Rauner also wants lawmakers to consider term limits and changing how legislative districts are drawn.

NEW YORK – Hidden from the public in his Manhattan high-rise, Donald Trump huddled Tuesday with Vice President-elect Mike Pence as he tried to fill out key posts in his Cabinet.

But the transition team appeared to be straining under the enormous challenge of setting up a new administration.

Former Rep. Mike Rogers, a respected Republican voice on national security issues, announced he was quitting the transition effort.

And an apparent clerical oversight effectively halted the Trump team’s ability to coordinate with President Barack Obama’s White House.

With Trump out of sight for several days, his allies engaged in an unusual round of public speculation about his potential appointments – including their own futures – as the president-elect and his aides weighed the nation’s top national security posts.

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani seemed to be angling for secretary of state.

But Trump’s transition team was reviewing Giuliani’s paid consulting work for foreign governments, which could delay a nomination or bump Giuliani to a different position, said a person briefed on the matter but not authorized to speak publicly about it.

Giuliani founded his own firm, Giuliani Partners, in 2001, and helped businesses on behalf of foreign governments, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela.

He also advised TransCanada, which sought to build the controversial Keystone XL pipeline, and helped the maker of the painkiller drug OxyContin settle a dispute with the

Drug Enforcement Administration.

A Trump official said John Bolton, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, remained in contention for secretary of state.

Bolton has years of foreign policy experience, but he has raised eyebrows with some of his hawkish stances, including a 2015 New York Times op-ed in which he advocated bombing Iran to halt the country’s nuclear program.

Businessman Carl Icahn disclosed on Twitter, based on conversations with the president-elect, that Trump was considering Steve Mnuchin, a former Goldman Sachs banker, and Wilbur Ross, a billionaire investor, to lead the Treasury and Commerce departments.

Pence, now running the transition team, ignored questions from reporters both as he entered Trump Tower, a thick binder tucked under his arm, and as he left six hours later.

He took over from New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who spent months running transition operations before his demotion last week.

The switch has slowed Trump’s ability to coordinate with the White House. Pence has yet to sign a memorandum of understanding facilitating interactions between his team and Obama administration officials. Christie had signed the document, but Pence’s promotion makes it invalid.

A person familiar with the transition efforts said different factions in Trump’s team “are fighting for power.”

Indeed, Trump effectively created two power centers in his White House even before taking office. He named Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus as his chief of staff and flame-throwing media mogul Steve Bannon as his chief strategist, but called them “equal partners.”

Jekyll-Hyde conduct sours governance What does “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” published in 1886 by Robert Louis Stevenson, have to do with American post-election politics 130 years later?

More than you might think.

In his novella, Stevenson created fictional characters that represent the fight between good and evil within the human heart.

Dr. Henry Jekyll, a basically good man, makes the mistake of mixing and drinking a potion that unleashes his inner demons, transforming him into Mr. Edward Hyde, a ruthless evildoer.

Over time, Jekyll loses control of his wicked alter ego. In the end, he loses his life.

In American politics, we see basically good people who, after tasting the potion of power, find themselves stooping to contemptible lows to retain it.

Their campaign charges, countercharges and general tactics focus on attacks, attacks and more attacks on the characters and records of their opponents.

We’ve seen one major presidential candidate call the other “crooked.”

We’ve seen the second major presidential candidate describe her opponents’ supporters as “deplorables” and her opponent as “unfit” for the presidency.

Names have been called, characters have been besmirched and doubts have been raised about the abilities of each to serve.

And that’s just the race for the White House.

On down the ballot in Illinois, negative campaigning has been seen and heard.

The worst example: a lewd, faked nude photo of a female state representative was mailed to people across her central Illinois district.

The problem with negative campaigns is their poison doesn’t disappear after Election Day – not for the candidates, and not for their supporters.

Although the campaign has ended and voters have chosen their leaders, Mr. Hyde can’t be banished as easily as Dr. Jekyll might like.

After being sworn in, elected officials are supposed to serve the public through the collaborative process of representative government.

The evil unleashed by negative campaigns often interferes with good governance. We refer to gridlocked government in Washington and Springfield as evidence.

As Lord Acton observed, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

Let the Dr. Jekylls and Mr. Hydes of the political world take note: Be very wary of the potion of power.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Voting issues for veteran in Shorewood

To the Editor: My 93-year-old father, a WWII veteran and resident at The Timbers of Shorewood was brought down to the polling place at Timbers by his caregiver around 5:30 p.m. to cast his vote.

I received a text shortly thereafter that my father was not allowed to vote because he could not produce an I.D. According to the Will County Election & National Conference of State Legislatures websites in Illinois, you are not required to present your voter ID card or provide ID. My father was registered and eligible according to the Will County Voter Eligibility Detail, yet the election judge refused to allow him to cast his vote for president in this historic election. So I would like an explanation as to why my 93-year-old, WWII veteran father was “denied” his right to vote?

This presidential election may well have been the last one he would vote in. What a flawed system. I am stunned that the election judge did not appear to know the requirements and this happened and at the very least an explanation and apology is

due to my father.

If you’re not voting for the first time in Illinois, you don’t need to provide ID to vote by in person.

Thank you to Joliet Central for veterans ceremony

To the Editor: On Nov. 10, we went to Joliet Central High School for a tribute to our veterans. It was the first time we had visited the school, and the experience was mind opening.

We loved how both the old and the new buildings blended architecturally. Better than the exterior of the building is what we saw inside.

We were greeted by the ROTC students every step of the way. They were polite, mannerly and quite knowledgeable about the school.

They took us to the auditorium where the ceremony took place.

When the rest of the student body came in, we again witnessed orderly, respectful students.

The ceremony was a beautiful tribute to our vets by the faculty, students, the ROTC, choir and the orchestra. We did see some tears being shed by our vets.

We were invited to a reception following the ceremony. Kudos to the students in the Culinary Department.

They were truly professional. While enjoying their delicious creations, we had an opportunity to talk to an administrator, a teacher and a security person. What we saw from all three was pride in their students and their school.

We’re happy we had this opportunity and want to thank the students, faculty and administrators for inviting us into your school.

Lincoln-Way West responds to some adversity in opener

cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Coaches often don’t learn a whole lot of new things about their teams in the initial game of a season.

But while the circumstances certainly were not what Lincoln-Way West girls basketball coach Ryan White had anticipated, how his squad responded spoke volumes of what he might expect to see as the season progresses.

The Warriors lost four-year player Emily Atsinger to an ankle injury late in the first quarter of Tuesday’s nonconference home game against Lockport, who also was playing its season debut.

Atsinger already had eight points and the hosts owned a 22-17 lead with 26 seconds left in the first period when the guard had to be helped off the court.

But instead of panicking, the Warriors responded in a big way, going on a 10-0 run early in the second quarter and adding a 12-0 burst in the final period to help them to a 65-46 win.

“When Emily got hurt, it just kind of sucked the air out of the gym and I didn’t know how we’d react,” White said. “I tried to emphasize that they’d played without her before at times and that they were all capable of doing it.

We definitely looked a little different at times without her, but they were able to get the job done. We had some freshmen step up and some people bringing up the ball who usually aren’t doing that. We kind of patched it together and got it done.

“Some of them were thrown in the mix for heavy minutes and maybe

we would have worked them in a little slower because Emily is probably not coming off the court much. That opened up 24 minutes of playing time for kids, and if they have to fill in for her for a while, it will be a valuable ex-

perience for them. The last few years we’ve had four-year players and then we add some young players. So we have a nice mix, and they should be fun to watch.”

Ex-Lewis star Strus has future at DePaul

Where’s Max Strus?

That question has been asked of me a couple of times lately. He had two years left to play basketball at Lewis, didn’t he?

He did, indeed. But shortly after last season concluded, the NCAA Division II first-team All-American and Great Lakes Valley Conference MVP decided he wanted to transfer and play on the Division I level. He certainly was qualified.

After receiving his release from Lewis, he committed to DePaul in the spring. He also had received offers from Xavier and Toledo and had interest from Louisville, Michigan and Wisconsin.

Strus’ mother, Debbie Strus (then Brinkman), was recruited in the 1970s

by DePaul women’s basketball coach Doug Bruno to play at DePaul. She played basketball and volleyball there for four years.

Anyone who watched 6-foot-6 Max Strus play for coach Scott Trost at Lewis the last two years will confirm he is special. In fact, I remarked more than once about how fortunate the Flyers were to have him, how he undoubtedly could be playing D-I

“Emily getting hurt was obviously not how we wanted to start off the season, but we do have a lot of girls who come off the bench who are definitely capable of filling her position until she comes back,” O’Donnell said. “This gives them an opportunity to show what they can do. It’s definitely exciting to have a lot of young players, and I just try to be a role model for them. When Em and I were freshmen, we looked up to seniors so we’re excited to play with them.

“When you’re young, it definitely helps to have players that you can look up to who will pull you along and help you keep your head up since it’s a big transition from eighth grade to varsity. Just looking at tonight and with the way that our girls were able to step up and fill in says a lot about the

All he did last season was average 20.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 3.5 assists. He had the game of a lifetime last November at Northwood when scored a school-record 52 points while taking 18 shots. He was 14 of 18 from the floor, 12 of 14 from 3-point range and 12 of 12 from the free throw line.

Lewis will miss him, big time.

I attempt each winter to stay abreast of how some of our Division I basketball players are faring. Strus technically is not from our area as he played high school ball at Stagg, but we will follow him next season at DePaul. He is sitting out this season as a transfer and then will have two years of eligibility with the Blue Demons.

As for other area products who are playing Division I ball, there is little to report statistically at this point.

But that’s decision-making I know we can do better at since I see it every day at practice. It might have been first-game jitters for some.

“We’ve got girls who want to compete and they’re battling with each other every day. I also like how they’ve come together. One of our values is unity and they’re really for each other.”

A few notes on some of our area’s major Division I football players: • LSU center Ethan Pocic (Lemont) this week is the SEC’s Co-Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season.

• Northwestern is starting Tyler Lancaster (Plainfield East) at defensive tackle, Flynn Nagel (Lemont) at wide receiver and J.B. Butler (Joliet Catholic) at left guard, while Parrker Westphal (Bolingbrook) is No. 2 on the depth chart at safety. Lancaster has 13 solo tackles and 12 assists for 25 total, including 3.5 tackles for loss.

Nagel has 28 receptions for 319 yards, an 11.4 average, and one touchdown.

• Ty Isaac (JCA) has rushed for 411 yards in 69 carries, a 6.0 average, and

five touchdowns for Michigan. He also has caught a 21-yard pass.

• Malin Jones (JCA) has rushed 15 times for 66 yards, a 4.4 average, and caught two passes for 18 yards at Louisville.

• Miles Boykin (Providence) has five receptions for 63 yards, a 12.6 average, for Notre Dame.

• Evan Panfil (Lincoln-Way Central) is at defensive end for Purdue and has 15 solo tackles, 11 assists, 11 tackles for loss and five sacks for 48 yards in losses.

• Jacob Huff (Bolingbrook) is a linebacker and his brother Julian a safety at Minnesota. Julian has 14 solo tackles, 11 assists, 2.5 for loss, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

Jacob has been in on six tackles.

• Rob Bain (Bolingbrook) is an Illinois defensive tackle with 23 total tackles, including eight solo, 3.5 for loss, one sack, one recovered fumble and one blocked kick.

• Tight end Danny Friend (Morris) has caught three passes at Indiana for 18 yards, one for a touchdown.

Among the most notable offseason stories involving Joliet area boys basketball was the coaching change at Joliet Central.

Jeff Corcoran stepped aside as the Steelmen coach and Lawrence Thompson Jr. was hired to run the program.

Last season, Thompson was the sophomore coach at Joliet West and also sat on the bench helping coach Nick DiForti and assistant Roger Plechaty in the varsity games.

Before that, of course, the Joliet East graduate spent more than three decades coaching at Lockport, 16 as the head coach. Like Corcoran, he was respected as a coach who teaches discipline and gets the most from the talent he has.

While Joliet West enters the season as the local team that will be ranked among the state’s best, and local fans can’t wait to see the Tigers next week in the Thanksgiving tournament they will be hosting, Joliet Central also will attract attention as the Steelmen compete in the WJOL Thanksgiving Classic at the University of St. Francis, an event where they traditionally have fared well.

Central, incidentally, will begin the tournament with a game against Romeoville that tips off at 7 p.m. Monday at Joliet Junior College. Three other first-night games will be played Monday at the Sullivan Center. The remainder of the tournament will be played Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at USF. “This program is in good shape,” said Thompson, who is being assisted by Michael Mines and Greg Smith.

“Jeff [Corcoran] and his staff did a great job getting these kids to buy into playing good defense and playing team basketball.”

But before getting deep into the conversation, Thompson cited one issue that will be difficult to solve.

“This team lost Malik Fuller [to graduation],” he said of the Steelmen’s undersized yet remarkably effective rebounding machine. “The points and rebounds he was able to get were something. He set an example for everyone else.

“So what happened was, even though they weren’t big, their team rebounding was a real strength because of the extra effort. That was their M.O.” The other key to last year’s Steelmen, who finished 16-13, was 6-foot-3 senior Jose Grubbs, who is entering his third varsity season and is versatile enough to play any position on the

“Jose is talented,” Thompson said.

“The best way to say it is he can and will play multiple positions. But he still needs to be himself. We want him to go out and do whatever is best for the team.

“In college [he has not yet decided on a school] he probably will be a guard/forward. He has good basketball traits. He can play anywhere on the floor. He wants to do whatever it takes for the Steelmen to win.”

Central’s strength appears to be in the backcourt. Grubbs will be listed as a guard, ran the Steelmen’s offense at times last year and, as Thompson, noted, will have his hands on the ball a lot.

In addition, junior point guard Cameron Blackmon saw significant time as a sophomore. Football standout JoJo McNair is a demon defensively, and Marcellus Hornsby also was a contributor in the backcourt last season.

In addition, Jason Bingham, who received some varsity experience at Central as a sophomore and played at Joliet West last season as a junior, has transferred back to Central.

“We just want Jason Bingham to come in and fit in,” Thompson said.

“It’s good that the adjustment to playing with these guys again won’t be too big.”

The big challenge for Thompson and his staff will be finding a way to replace Fuller’s contributions. Threesport forward Ryan King is one frontcourt player who may help fill that void. He was in Corcoran’s rotation a year ago.

The Steelmen, of course, would love to continue their tradition next week of faring well in the WJOL Tournament.

“In the big scheme of things, it’s important to win,” Thompson said. “But we anticipate using almost everyone in the tournament. I know I have to have patience with the players, and they need to have patience with me.

“Jeff [Corcoran] had these kids playing well. I want to see that mindset and adjust to them, make my evaluations and help them become better basketball players.”

Pettinato, Lincoln-Way West set to test WJOL tourney

dgoss@shawmedia.com The Lincoln-Way West boys basketball team accomplished something last season that nobody thought possible.

The Warriors were solid, but not a team that had a realistic chance to beat Hillcrest in a Class 3A sectional final, Morgan Park in the Joliet Central Supersectional and Peoria Manual in the state semifinals.

Yet that is exactly what happened.

West finished off Hillcrest, 61-56, on the strength of an 11-0 run over the final 1 minute 13 seconds. Morgan Park was ranked the best 3A team in the state by most observes before falling to the Warriors, 68-60. And Manual, a typically strong Rams’ outfit, went down, 4541, at Peoria.

The magnificent run ended with a 62-37 loss to Belleville Althoff in the state championship game.

Of course, that was then. West coach Brian Flaherty and his staff are hoping the experience some of his players received in all those big games will pay dividends this time around.

It all begins with 6-foot-2 Marco Pettinato, the defending Herald-News Player of the Year, who recently committed to Lewis.

Pettinato will lead the Warriors next week into the WJOL Thanksgiving Classic at the University of St. Francis Sullivan Center. They are in the season-opening event for the first time and will open at 5 p.m. Monday against Plainfield Central.

“We’re optimistic about how this season may go,” Flaherty said. “The whole thing is the experience we received last year and if it can carry over into this year.”

In addition to Pettinato, guards Jay Bumstead and Nolan Green received significant experience last season.

“We’ll be relying on those three guys heavily,” Flaherty said. “If other guys can step up, those three will show them the way.”

Pettinato, who joins Lemont’s PJ Pipes and Joliet Central’s Jose Grubbs as players who will be under the microscope at the WJOL tournament, has been a leader throughout his four-year varsity career, now more so than ever.

“Marco has to be the leader,” Flaherty said. “He is the most experienced kid around. In practice, he is almost coaching as much as Dick [Mandella, Flaherty’s assistant] and I. He knows pretty much how everything works.”

As to whether local fans will see a better Pettinato beginning with the WJOL tourney – if that is even possible – Flaherty said, “Marco right now is practicing better than ever. Maybe it’s because of the expanded leadership role he has taken on. He is definitely leading by example.

“He wants to be the best player on the floor every night. He is the hardest worker already. We have asked him to up the ante as far as leadership goes.”

Two areas where Pettinato’s game are better are athleticism and his outside shot.

“His overall athleticism is improved,” Flaherty said. “He wasn’t the type who would go in and dunk the ball.

Now he does that.

“He has had a good fall shooting the ball, too. Teams last year used their length to back off him if he wasn’t hitting his shot consistently, and that pre-

vented him from getting to the basket as much as he would like. Now they may not be able to do that.”

The key for the Warriors is replacing the contributions that came two big graduation losses, 6-7 Jon Marotta and athletic guard Cam Gavin.

“Marotta and Cam were so versatile on the defensive end,” Flaherty said.

“We have a big kid [Mark Lorenz] who was with us as a sophomore last year as Jon’s understudy. We’re hoping he fits in.”

Flaherty said one positive to the tournament, in addition to facing nearby schools that the Warriors may not see during the season, is giving the kids the experience of playing on a college floor.

“It definitely would be nice to go in there and win, but the whole thing we’re about right now is showing progress,” he said. “We want to show well, and, hopefully, win. Our goal for next week is to get a better idea who fits in where.

“In the long term, our goal is to be the best basketball team we can be in the middle to end of the season.”

Perhaps you had to be there and see the look in his eye when he replied – only a week or two ago, Fox would have been more likely to suggest a media guy doesn’t know enough about the game to challenge play-calling – but in accepting the question and specifically saying the coaches are to blame, too, he at least created a sliver of hope.

Sadly, when I went in for the kill, asking why, unlike Ezekiel Elliott or other great backs such as Adrian Peterson or Le’Veon Bell, Bears rookie Jordan Howard never gets the ball four, five or six times in a row to really establish the run and open up the pass, Fox reverted to coach-speak.

“Early in the game, I don’t know how many times in a row or not, you can’t get one-dimensional in this league,” he said. “That doesn’t mean just passing. You can’t run it every play either, or at least I haven’t seen too many games go like that.”

But Fox can read the play sheets and study the tape as well as the rest of us, and he knows that 11 of Howard’s

14 carries were on first down, and the only time in the game he got the ball on consecutive plays was in the second quarter, when he ripped off consecutive 13-yard runs.

Sunday’s Bucs game might have gone very differently for the Bears had they used Howard correctly, and Monday I couldn’t escape the feeling Fox knows it.

What he will do about it with seven weeks to go and whether Howard is healthy enough are, of course, the open questions.

As for the Jeffery suspension, Fox again said the right things but clearly wore the look of a guy trying to imagine what can go wrong next.

Look at the upside: Jeffery was unlikely to remain a Bear after this season anyway, and now there is one less excuse to resist using the ground game to get the offense improving.

NASCAR: SPRINT CUP

Chase isn’t always fair; that doesn’t make it bad CHARLOTTE, N.C. – When William Byron’s engine exploded less than 10 laps away from his seventh win of the season, his chance to race for the Truck Series championship blew up in a puff of white IN THE smoke.

It was one PITS of those bad Jenna breaks that Fryer happen every week at every level in auto racing. But when it happens to the most dominant driver in a series and ruins his title aspirations, it ignites a debate about the fairness – flaws, maybe? – of the elimination-style playoffs NASCAR uses in all three of its series.

Brad Keselowski, particularly, was upset about Byron’s misfortune, even though Keselowski fields rival trucks. He described himself as “mad and disappointed” for Byron, and said the elimination format effectively has “traded excellence for entertainment.”

Keselowski learned how harsh the system can be in 2014, its debut year at the Sprint Cup level. He won six races that year, but one bad day at Martinsville led to his elimination from the playoffs after the third round.

Keselowski had been worthy of a spot in the finale, but he didn’t earn one of

the slots.

Same goes for Jeff Gordon that first year. He won four times in 2014 and should have raced for the title. Like Keselowski, he was bounced out of the third round.

Joey Logano should have made the finale last year but didn’t. Same goes for Matt Kenseth, who was two laps away from victory Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway until a caution created a series of events that caused him to crash. He was all but assured of a slot in this weekend’s finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway one moment, last in the Chase standings the next.

There have been arguments about the Chase since it was first introduced in 2004. Fans felt it was contrived and that the traditional season-long point champion was the truest way to decide a title. The format has been tinkered with several times since, but its most radical adjustments came three years ago when NASCAR implemented eliminations. That format this year was brought to both the Xfinity Series and Truck Series for the first time.

Every sport has upsets and underdogs. Every sport has a Cinderella story every now and then that drums up interest. NASCAR very much needed that element when it introduced the Chase, and chairman Brian France has

long trumpeted the desire to have his sport in a position to create “Game 7 moments.”

The entire country talked for days about the seventh game of the World Series and the Cubs’ dramatic victory.

Any leader in their right mind would want that same nail-biting tension for their sport. They want to see crushing defeats, career-defining victories, magical moments.

So no matter what longtime fans believe, France did the absolute right thing in creating the Chase. Yes, people claim they stopped watching NASCAR because of the Chase. They blame France for turning to gimmicks over tradition, claim the Chase has ruined the sport they once loved.

Well, those people are clinging to a past that never is coming back.

NASCAR has plenty of problems, and NASCAR does many things incorrectly, but the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship is not one of them.

The Chase in its first year had five drivers eligible to win the title.

It pitted teammates Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson against each other in one of the fiercest championship battles in NASCAR history. The Chase in 2011 produced a magnificent finale in which Tony Stewart and Carl Edwards ended the championship tied

with Stewart getting the trophy on a tiebreaker.

The elimination element has raised the pressure and forced drivers to answer the call when the season is on the line. Kevin Harvick twice won must-win races in 2014 on his way to the title, Joey Logano has done it twice this year alone, including Sunday when his victory put him in the finale.

It absolutely is true that the final four drivers will not always represent the most deserving teams. Byron learned that the hard way in the Truck Series’ inaugural Chase. The most dominant teams don’t always deliver when the pressure is at its highest; although Harvick had performed time and again when his back was against the wall, Stewart-Haas Racing couldn’t come up with the dominating performance it needed Sunday for him to advance.

That’s called sports, and there’s nothing contrived about it.

It’s not always fair, but sports are the greatest reality programming out there. Anything can happen – and did to Kenseth at Phoenix! – and that’s why we watch.

LAKE FOREST – I wouldn’t say Bears coach John Fox was contrite when meeting the media Monday after Sunday’s embarrassing 36-10 loss to the Buccaneers, but he wasn’t his usual dismissive, combative self either.

Whether it was the fact his club clearly was John Fox unprepared to compete in Tampa and seemed to, for the most part, concede not too deep into the third quarter, or the bombshell news that receiver Alshon Jeffery has been suspended by the league for the next four games for testing positive for PEDs, Fox seems to understand his ship is floundering at sea, if not actually sinking.

I gave him a chance to throw his quarterback under the bus when I

asked him whether he’s ever coached a player like Jay Cutler and how difficult it is to coach him.

“You know, the quarterback position is unique,” he said. “I don’t think how it’s viewed by fans or by the media or all the people on the outside, you know all our signatures are on that. It was a poor performance and we all take responsibility for it.”

That was an answer I was glad to hear because while Cutler and Cutler alone was responsible for the plays he made on his two picks, it seems clear to me the play-calling put him in a position to fail.

So I followed up by asking Fox whether the play-calling was a major part of the problem.

“Well, you know when you fall behind 17, and the amount of score that I think they opened up to, it started earlier I think in the third quarter down 14, that affects how much you do run the ball,” he said. “But, like I said, all our signatures are on it, so there’s a lot of blame to spread around – not just one entity, including just players, it’s

MYSTERY DINER Plenty of restaurants and bars have photos or gear on the wall.

The Tap House Grill in Plainfield literally has beer taps in display cases upon entry.

But don’t be confused by the expansive beer list, which includes 40 beers on tap to meander through.

They serve food too. And it isn’t just bar food; it’s seriously good eats that aren’t crazy expensive.

One of the intrigues of eating out is trying new things. So as much as I was tempted to order The Farm Burger, a certified Angus beef burger topped with a fried egg, cheddar cheese, applewood smoked bacon and bacon spread, I decided to be more adventurous.

I also was not adventurous enough to go after the King Kobe Burger (You get a Kobe Tap House Grill T-shirt if you down the entire 1.5-pound triple decker burger topped with 0.5 pounds of cheese and pound of fries), mind you.

So I went after the Sprecher Root Beer-braised Beef & Gouda two-handed sandwich. The menu claims it was honored by another media outlet as being one of the best, so I figured this media outlet should try the sandwich for itself.

Now plenty of places make a roast beef and cheese sandwich sound fancy for no reason. But that wasn’t the case here.

This was a serious sandwich, with tots on the side to hide how serious I was about it.

Claiming to have locally baked breads is easy, Baking a bread that fresh and soft with a crust that doesn’t crunch yet remains firm enough and not soggy with melted cheese is an art form. They’ve got it down.

And the cheese, well, let’s just say it works well with the root beerbraised beef.

Which brings us to the taps that led us into the restaurant to begin with.

It’s easy to have a lot of offerings on tap. It’s hard to have a lot of offerings yet have something for everyone.

Of the 40 beer options, there are a few that most have tried and know such as Coors Light, Miller Light and several versions of Sam Adams.

But I was being adventurous, remember, so I made sure to check out only things that were new. So I didn’t even go after the Boulevard brews I remembered fondly.

If you recall, I passed on the eggs and burger earlier, so I needed a little breakfast in my life.

Then I closed off the meal with New Holland’s Dragon’s Milk Oak-Barrel Aged.

The best comparison I had tried

before was Alltech’s Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale, but New Holland’s might just be a better option.

The beers on tap are constantly changing, but an updated list is available on BeerMenus.com, along with some of the bottled options.

So I left satisfied and also with big hopes for the future of taking down the King Kobe Burger. There are plenty of food challenges out there, but this one for some reason just sounded more delicious.

And who doesn’t like a T-shirt thrown in to celebrate a victory over food?

36 Artificial sweeteners may not decrease calories Note to readers: This column originally ran in November 2014.

Dear Dr. K: For 20 years, I’ve substituted

artificial sweeteners for sugar in my coffee, and switched to diet soft drinks to avoid obesity and the diseases overweight people are prone to, like Type 2 diabetes. Now I hear new research says that’s a bad idea.

What is going on?

Dear Reader: Here’s what’s not confusing: More than a modest amount of sugar each day is not good for you. Nothing’s changed there. The sweet tooth many of us have (I plead guilty) leads us to eat too much sugar.

Sugar contains easily absorbed calories. That makes it harder to maintain or achieve a healthy weight. It also increases our risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of diabetes. Sugar-sweetened soft drinks and fruit juices are particularly bad actors.

The development of no-calorie artificial sweeteners, such as saccharine, sucralose and aspartame, seemed like a godsend.

Like you, I switched from regular drinks to “diet” drinks a long time ago. Artificial sweeteners taste as sweet as (or sweeter than) sugar, but contain virtually no calories. What’s not to like?

In previous columns, I’ve said there was some evidence consuming artificial sweeteners might increase our appetite for sugar-containing sweets. That definitely is not a good thing, if true. I still regard it as unproven.

But a scientific study published in the prestigious scientific journal Nature set me back on my heels. If other scientists confirm this work, it has important implications for all of us. To tell you what the study showed, I first need to explain a little biology.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Many foods contain carbohydrates (“carbs”). Carbohydrates resemble a chain with multiple links. When they enter our gut, the links in the chain are separated by digestion. Table sugar is a simple chain: just two links, easily separated. It’s the single links that mainly are absorbed into our blood. The most common is called glucose.

When your doctor measures your blood sugar, glucose is what is being measured.

Any food, say a slice of an orange, contains calories. But those calories add to our weight, and influence whether we might develop diabetes, only if they are efficiently broken down into single links – glucose – and then are absorbed into our body.

Our intestines contain trillions of bacteria of different types. Some types are very good at breaking up carbohydrates into glucose; other types are not. If you’re a person with lots of the first type of bacteria living inside you, every slice of orange you eat will lead to more calories getting into your blood.

The recent study presents evidence indicating artificial sweeteners may encourage the growth of the types of bacteria that generate more glucose – and, hence, lead us to absorb more calories. In other words, while the sweeteners don’t contain calories, they may cause us to absorb more calories.

If other scientific studies confirm these findings, I will be further lowering my modest consumption of artificial sweeteners.

Six or seven diamonds might have been the best contract if North had a minor two-suiter. North’s two-club rebid guaranteed at least a six-card suit and denied a four-card major. South bid what he hoped he could make.

Declarer starts with seven top tricks: one spade, two hearts, one diamond and three clubs. After taking the spade ace on the third round of the suit, the optimist unblocks his club king, plays a heart to dummy’s ace, then cashes the club ace and queen. However, when West discards on the third club, the contract can no longer be made. Yes, if clubs are 3-3, South wins 10 tricks, but that is against the odds.

The pessimist sees that he needs only five club winners, not six. He overtakes his king with dummy’s ace and cashes the queen, happy to see the jack appear from West. Declarer drives out the club 10 and claims.

Note, though, that he also succeeds if clubs are 3-3, just not with an overtrick.
