Joliet considers hiring a lobbyist for Washington

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The City Council is considering hiring a lobbyist, and Mayor Bob O’Deklirk said he can suggest a few people for the job.

The possibility of adding a lobbyist was one of a few personnel discussions at a Monday workshop meeting where the council reviewed the proposed 2017 budget.

O’Dekirk suggested hiring a Washington lobbyist, noting that President-elect Donald Trump is considering substantial infrastructure spending.

“I can bring some people forward,” O’Dekirk said, as two council members supported the idea.

O’Dekirk said that with Joliet looking for federal dollars to widen Interstate 80 and for other highway projects, it may be the year to hire a lobbyist.

“Having our own federal lobbyist might be the right way to go,” Councilman John Gerl agreed. “President-elect Trump is certainly considering, at least that’s what he said, a large, federal infrastructure program. I’d hate to be on the outside looking in.”

O’Dekirk suggested that the city look toward using money generated by a new enforcement program on overweight trucks to pay for more police. The city has generated $263,000 in fines on overweight trucks since the program was started in February.

O’Dekirk asked Police Chief Brian Benton.

“We could,” Benton answered.

Meanwhile, Hock told the council that he was adding an animal control officer to the proposed budget.

The animal control officer would work out of the mayor’s office, and serve as the city’s liaison to Joliet Township Animal Control, Hock said.

Hock, however, said there is no money in the budget for more police or public works employees after being asked whether workers could be added.

One topic not discussed by the council was funding for the Rialto Square Theatre, although the subject generated the most public comments for a second budget meeting in a row.

Rialto board member Mary Beth Gannon again suggested the city not provide the $500,000 in support sought by the theater.

“I think it’s important to say this is not your responsibility,” Gannon told the council.

St. Joe’s TIF district could advance Tuesday

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A tax incentive district for the business neighborhood around Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center could come closer to reality Tuesday.

The Joliet City Council is slated to vote on an ordinance that would set the schedule in motion, including a date for a public hearing and approval of the proposed tax increment financing redevelopment area.

TIF districts allow developers to use higher property taxes that occur as property is improved to offset the costs of construction.

City Manager Jim Hock said Joliet now benefits from lobbyists who work on behalf of the Will County Center for Economic Development and the Illinois Municipal League.

But Councilman Jan Quillman said Joliet may need someone working solely for the city in Washington.

“Everyone will be down there lobbying,” Quillman said. “We want to get our own foot in the door.”

The council discussed the 2017 budget during its workshop meeting and plans to discuss it again during its regular meeting Tuesday.

The matter was discussed briefly at the council’s workshop meeting on Monday with staff presenting a schedule for a public hearing on the TIF district on Jan. 3 and a council vote for approval on Jan. 17.

Deputy City Manager Steve Jones said the Jan. 17 approval date could be changed if matters arose during the public hearing that needed to be addressed.

“Clearly this could move into February,” Jones said. “There’s nothing critical about that Jan. 17 vote.”

Consulting firm S. B. Friedman & Company has completed a feasibility study to determine that the area qualifies as a TIF district.

TIF districts were designed for redevelopment of blighted areas. City officials have pointed to vacant buildings on Republic Avenue as one of the reasons for the TIF district. Hammes Avenue was added after Dr. Theodore Kanellakes urged the city to look at the numbers of vacancies in medical offices on that street.

Joliet abatement officer removes graffiti; city urges all to call

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Removing graffiti is a never-ending job, but it’s getting cleaned up.

“I’ve been doing this eight years.

I’ve been to that wall 10 times,” said Jan Nahorski. Joliet’s graffiti abatement officer, said, pointing to a certain brick garage on the East Side of the city.

Nahorski’s work and the city program came into the spotlight in recent months with an outburst of racist graffiti showing up in a subdivision on the West Side of the city.

The culprit or culprits have not been caught, but Nahorski has been there to clean up the messes left behind.

That run of graffiti even hit a section of the Interstate 55 sound wall facing the frontage road. Nahorski is

Now Nahorski can add sound-wall beige paint to his assortment of cleanup materials, which include a pressure washer that sprays 220-degree Fahrenheit water along with an emulsifier branded under the name “Elephant Snot” and made specifically for graffiti removal.

Defendant testifies in murder trial

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet man told jurors on Monday he was trying to discipline, not hurt his mentally disabled brother-in-law when he administered a fatal beating three years ago.

“I’m thinking, if he even sees [the stick] he’s going to [behave]. You know ‘You make a mess.

You clean it up,’” Francis “Frank” Zabala said.

“I’m upset. I’m frustrat- Francis ed. I’m desperate.”

‘Frank’ Zabala Zabala, 55, has been charged with first-degree murder after Robert Meredith Jr. died from injuries allegedly suffered during the beating Sept. 22, 2013, at their home in the 3800

block of Bergstrom Street. According to testimony, Meredith had become increasingly disruptive and acted out more often since moving into Zabala’s home after his parents died the year before.

After having dinner, Frank Zabala and his wife, Janice, were watching TV while Meredith kept interrupting.

When he was sent to “sit in time out” he kept making trips to the bathroom, the defendant testified.

When Meredith urinated on himself and the floor, his sister went to get him clean clothes while Frank Zabala retrieved a carpet cleaner from the basement. He then became irritated because Meredith refused to try using the small vacuum himself and was getting mad that Zabala wanted him to.

Frank Zabala testified he then got

a wooden stick used to stake tomato plants from his garage. Janice Zabala last week testified her husband retrieved a wooden slat from a broken rocking chair.

Frank Zabala said he struck Meredith on the back “more than two and less than 12 times” with the stick, but his brother-in-law still wouldn’t clean the carpet.

“Finally, I just [told my wife], ‘Sit him on the couch. I’ll clean it up,’ which is probably what I should’ve done to start with,” Zabala said. “He made a little chuckle at me that he didn’t have to clean it up and I punched him in his back.”

Zabala admitted striking Meredith with a closed fist “more than two and less than 10 times” before cleaning the carpet while his brother-in-law went to

the bathroom again. Janice Zabala said her brother fell down in the bathroom and collapsed after she put him in a chair in the family room.

An ambulance brought Meredith to the hospital, where he died from an apparent heart attack, but police were called after medical personnel noticed extensive bruising on his back.

“It was wrong on my part, I know,” Zabala told defense attorney Neil Patel.

When Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Dan Walsh held up a picture of Meredith’s back, Zabala acknowledged there were bruises, but said he could not “characterize” them.

“I didn’t know I was hurting him that bad,” Zabala said. “I was trying to get him to do what we asked him to do.”

“It was excessive?” Walsh asked.

“Yes,” Zabala acknowledged.

Joliet D-86 officials to celebrate school’s National Blue Ribbon award

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Public Schools District 86 students and staff will celebrate Eisenhower Academy’s national award Wednesday.

The public outdoor event will take place at the magnet school and include students raising the National Blue Ribbon flag from the U.S. Department of Education.

Eisenhower Academy, a school with grades first through fifth, was named a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School for its high-achieving status.

Wendy Wolgan, the school’s principal, said the staff is exceptionally proud of the students, parents and the community.

“It will be a wonderful celebration for a great accomplishment that our family and school family has made together,” she said.

The National Blue Ribbon flag is a widely recognized symbol of exemplary teaching and learning, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

The students will participate in it, with the glee club singing and other students highlighting the successes of the school, Wolgan said.

Eisenhower was one of 16 public

schools in Illinois to get the honor, Illinois state education officials have said. The only other area school to receive the designation was Kennedy Junior High School in Naperville School District 203.

The U.S. Department of Education initiated the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program in 1982 to bring public attention to exemplary schools in the United States and to facilitate communication and sharing of best practices within and among schools.

More than 7,500 schools nationwide have been presented with the award, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

“The National Blue Ribbon School award affirms the hard work of students, educators, families and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging content,” according to the department’s website.

Eisenhower is a magnet school where students who reside in District 86 must test average or above average to attend. Other magnet schools in District 86 include Forest Park Individual Education School, Hufford Junior High Individual Education program and Washington Junior High Academy program.

Rialto theater invites public to Wednesday marquee ceremony THE HERALD–NEWS JOLIET – The Rialto Square Theatre is inviting the public to a dedication and lighting ceremony for its restored marquee at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The theater has added new panels and relamped the marquee, as well as repainting the vertical “Rialto” sign.

“We are very excited about the refreshed look we are seeing before our eyes as the marquee is cleaned, painted and relamped,” interim Executive Director Timothy Berry said

in a news release inviting the public to the dedication ceremony. “I hope people will drop by and see for themselves the vast difference of this restoration project.”

The $50,000 project was done with support from a grant from the U.S. Department of Interior, as well as donations from the Joliet Rotary Club, First Midwest Bank and the Rialto Square Theatre Volunteers.

The work was done by two Joliet companies, Ireland Painting and Grate Signs.

Residents learn from elected officials at breakfast event

fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – State financial issues came up more than once at a breakfast Monday held by an advocacy group for Lockport Township seniors.

State and local elected officials spoke about their work and the challenges they face to meet the needs of senior citizens during the American Association of Retired Persons event at the Prairie Bluff Golf Club.

The AARP advocates on behalf of people who are 55 and older and its members strongly oppose taxing retirement income, said Courtney Hedderman, AARP associate state director.

She said taxing retirement income on top of other tax burdens will drastically limit retirees’ quality of life and cause them to move out of state.

“Retirees did not create the current [state] budget crisis. … It would be unacceptable to ask them to pay more to fix it,” Hedderman said.

State Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, said residents have fine people advocating on their behalf in Will County. She argued for the importance of funding human services, especially for seniors who have retired and “done their tour of duty.”

“They have saved – these are not the people that misspent their money. …

The [funding] cuts have been happening – we’ve cut a lot – but it’s just not right. It is not morally right to do it from the programs that our most vulnerable citizens need just to survive,” she said.

HOMER GLEN – A new fire chief has been chosen to lead the Homer Township Fire Protection District.

Battalion Chief Christopher Locacius was picked by the board on Nov. 7 as the district’s new fire chief, effective Jan. 1, according to a news release from the fire protection district. The district services an area between the Northwest Homer Fire Protection District and the Mokena Fire Protection District.

Locacius said he was excited to be chosen.

“I started here 15 years ago and worked up through the ranks,” he said.

Locacius was named by the fire protection district’s Board of Trustees.

He started his fire service career in 1992 and obtained a master’s degree in business administration with an emphasis on public administration in 2010.

Last year, he obtained his chief fire officer certification, the highest certification offered by the Illinois State Fire Marshal, according to the news release.

With Locacius’ appointment, promotions of a replacement battalion chief,

captain and lieutenant will also become effective at the start of a new year.

Locacius and his wife, Beata, have been residents of Homer Glen for the past 16 years and have three daughters, Lauren, 14, and twins, Victoria and Elizabeth, both 11.

“I also live in this community and I have a passion for this community,” Locacius said. “Being part of this community is networking with the various organizations.”

Since last September, Deputy Fire Marshal Dave Bricker, a 34-year fire service member, has served as acting chief, after Robert Tutko resigned from the fire protection district. Tutko was hired as the first full-time chief in 2012, according to the fire protection district’s website.

He will become the fire prevention division chief at the start of next year.

Bricker, of Lockport, has obtained a bachelor’s degree in fire service management. He has a wife, Sue, and two daughters, Kaity and Rachel. He has been active in community organizations for the past 12 years.

A formal swearing-in ceremony will take place Jan. 10.

MORRIS – For 49 years, Greenway Motors has been a staple of the Morris business community, and you can’t drive very far in town without seeing a car bearing a Greenway sticker.

On Friday, the owner and founder of the company, Charles “Chuck” T. Greenway, died.

Greenway came to Morris in September 1967, buying Benson Pontiac and founding Greenway Motors, which he operated for 49 years. He has represented Pontiac, Oldsmobile, GMC Trucks, Ford, Mercury, Chrysler, Plymouth, Dodge, Ram, Jeep, Eagle, AMC and International Harvester.

“Dad really liked it in Morris,” said his son, Tom. “He must have. It will be our 50th year here next year. He came from the Depression era and had to start small. Back then, Morris was relatively small and he liked having his business here.

“What he really loved was interacting with people and selling cars. He just kept bringing different makes of cars in.

We got Olds in 1968, Chrysler in 1975, Dodge in 1978, Ford in the early 1980s and GMC in 1989. We became kind of a one-stop shop for people.”

In over 49 years of operating Greenway Motors, Greenway has helped thousands of people with their automotive needs. Many young people started their working lives washing cars at Greenway.

“One thing he was proud of was that a lot of kids around here got their first job at our place washing cars, then they would come back and buy their first car from us,” Tom Greenway said. “He liked being part of the fabric of a small town.

He always thought you should be fair with people and they would come back.

“He wasn’t out to make the last dollar out of a car. He just wanted to make a sale. He must have been doing something right to stay in business all those years.”

Born in 1932 in Chicago, Chuck was the son of the late Charles S. and Freda (Grapes) Greenway.

Greenway graduated from Fenger High School in Chicago. He subsequently graduated from Bowling Green State University in Ohio, where he was president of Theta Chi Fraternity. He served in the U.S. Army in 1955 and served in Intelligence at Fort Meade, Maryland, where he met his wife of 57 years, Bettie.

Upon leaving the military, Chuck started selling cars at Western Avenue, where he became the leading salesman.

Eventually, he was recruited by General Motors, where he became district manager for Pontiac Motor Division.

He was past president of Illinois New Car/Truck Dealer Association, past board member (15 years) of Lockport School Board, a member of the Lions Club, Morris Country Club and First United Methodist Church. He was a former member of the Joliet Junior College Board. Chuck was an avid boater and enjoyed watching and purchasing in the financial markets, and his true love was being a car dealer.

Survived by his wife, Bettie; children, Tom (Teresa) Greenway of Morris, Debra (Tom) Packley of Morris and Patrick (Christie) Greenway of Lockport; grandchildren, Jacob Packley, Deana (fiancé Rafael) Packley and David, Alex, Ryan and Ian Greenway; and one brother, Gerald (Helga Legler) Greenway of Morris. Chuck was preceded in death by his parents.

“It’s easier to remove when it’s fresh, and when you remove it immediately, it’s less likely more will go up after it,” Melesio said.

The program also depends on people calling when they see graffiti, he noted.

“Joliet is a graffiti-free city because we have an aggressive effort to remove graffiti immediately,” Melesio said.

“That metric depends on people continuing to call us as soon as the graffiti goes up.”

Nahorski’s work is never done. But he has made a lot of progress.

“This program is working,” he said.

“When I first started, it was backed up. I had a backlog of 622 addresses. It took a long time, but I got it down. Now, today I have six on my list.”

On that day last week, he was removing gang graffiti from facing walls on two vacant houses.

The walls weren’t visible from the street, which made them a lower priority than other jobs, although not unimportant, Nahorski noted.

Top priorities are schools and other public buildings. Any graffiti that is highly visible gets immediate attention, too. But it all gets done.

“It’s usually within two or three days the graffiti is gone,” Nahorski said.

“Sometimes people call. It’s been four or five days. I’m sorry, but I’m getting to it.”

The sooner, the better

It’s not unusual for Nahorski to remove graffiti within hours of it being reported, said John Sheridan, president of the Cunningham Neighborhood Council.

The faster it can be removed, the better, said Alfredo Melesio, director of

Gregory said none of the injuries were life-threatening and “two of the three victims refused to give statements” to police.

Born: October 26, 1925; in Calumet, MI Died: October 14, 2016; in Plainfield, IL Dorothy C. Bolos (Godin), age 91. Our beloved mother and grandmother left us peacefully at her home in Plainfield, Illinois on October 14, 2016 after a lingering illness.

She was born in Calumet, Michigan, to the late Cecilia and Joseph Godin on October 26th, 1925. She moved to Joliet, Illinois in the early 1940s and was married on October 27, 1945.

Preceded in death, were her husband Joseph L. Bolos; siblings, Edward, Hilary, Francis Godin and Marcella (Godin) Slivka.

She is survived by her children, Patricia (Ron) Schwinnen, Joseph (Laurie) Bolos, Michael Bolos, Robert (Patricia) Bolos, Tina (Don) Tijan; and her brother, Alex (Virginia) Godin. She also is survived by 6 Grandchildren; 10 Great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private service will be held for immediate family and burial at Elmhurst Cemetery in Joliet, Illinois.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Joliet Area Community Hospice (815.740.4104) of which they were very helpful and caring during this difficult time.

Born August 13, 1923 in Chicago to Joseph and Ann (nee Cosentino) Quattrocki. Elsie was an opera singer and loved to study music. She received her bachelor’s degree from St. Vincent College DePaul University.

Survived by her loving husband of 46 years, Fred S. Cemeno; her children, Ann (Bill) Tortorello, Mary Fran (Lenny) Traficanto, Josephine (Pete) Spoto, Liz (Ami) Youhana, Nancy Bottino, and Carol (Pat) Leahy; 16 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.

Preceded in death by her first husband, August Passi (1966); one daughter, Nancy Prather; one brother, Salvatore “Tooty” Quattrocki; and a son-in-law, Dale Bottino.

Joe retired from EJ&E Railroad steel car shop in 1991 after 40 years of service. He was a U.S. Army Korean War Veteran. He was a member of the VFW Cantigny Post #367, Joliet Moose #300 and Mecca Moose Legion #9 where he made Fellowship in 1978. He was also a member of the Italian Cultural Society, a lifetime member of the South Side Civic Club a lifetime member of Old Timers Baseball Association of Will County and a diehard Cubs fan.

DAVID LEE EICHHORN David Lee Eichhorn, age 79, passed away peacefully Sunday, November 13, 2016 at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home with his family by his side.

He was born in 1937 in Joliet.

He attended St. Joseph’s Grade School, Lockport and graduated in 1955 from Lockport Township High School. He received a Bachelor’s degree from Northern Illinois University. Dave was a United States Air Force Veteran, serving at Ft. Meade, Maryland from 1956 to 1960.

He taught high school at Wilco Industrial Arts Center in Romeoville until his retirement

in 2000.

Preceded in death by his son, David; his parents, Howard and Bernice (Rust); his sisters, Judy Hall and Linda Bushnell.

“I’ve got a pretty long track record covering politics and news, so I’m not particularly worried that oneday blog chatter is going to destroy my reputation,” she told The Associated Press then.

Ifill, who was black, also questioned why people would assume her book would be favorable toward Obama. “Do you think they made the same assumptions about Lou Cannon [who is white] when he wrote his book about Reagan?” she said.

Ron retired in March 2011 from Dutch Farms (formally Joliet Butter Company). He enjoyed researching his family tree through genealogy, working outside in the yard and making woodworking crafts. Ron’s biggest joy was just spending time with his family.

NEW YORK – Gwen Ifill, co-anchor of PBS’ “NewsHour” with Judy Woodruff and a veteran journalist who moderated two vice presidential debates, died Monday of cancer, the network said.

She was 61.

Ifill took a leave from “NewsHour” for a month this spring for health reasons, keeping details of her illness private. Her health failing, she left “NewsHour” again shortly before an election night that she and Woodruff would have covered together.

STATE Dems cite ‘schedule conflict,’ miss budget meeting

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner’s vision of a swift, post-election budget compromise is off to a rocky start after a key Democratic leader cited a last-minute “schedule conflict” as the reason for missing a meeting the Republican governor requested.

Republican leaders who met with Rauner on Monday blasted Democrats for their absence and said they need to be engaged to move forward.

“It is completely inexcusable,” said Republican Sen. Christine Radogno, the GOP’s Senate leader.

Rauner said last week he was “cautiously optimistic” when he asked House and Senate leaders to meet to begin work on ending a 16-month budget standoff, but the absence of ruling Democrats shows how challenging it continues to be to find compromise.

The political standoff has led to cuts to social service providers, some of whom have shut down altogether, and an uncertain future for higher education institutions that are receiving less funding than they have in the past.

The governor called the meeting days after the results from Election Day, when Republicans diminished the Democrats’ numbers in the Legisla-

Illinois, California soldiers killed in Afghanistan attack

FORT HOOD, Texas – The Department of Defense on Monday identified two U.S. soldiers killed in an explosion at a U.S. airfield in Afghanistan.

The department said 20-year-old Pfc. Tyler R. Iubelt of Tamaroa, Illinois, and 30-year-old Sgt. John W. Perry of Stockton, California, died of injuries inflicted by an improvised explosive device. Two American contractors also died in the explosion Saturday morning. An additional 16 U.S. service members and one Polish soldier were wounded.

Iubelt and Perry were assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Special Troops Battalion, 1st Sustainment Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division out of Fort Hood, Texas.

The day before the meeting was set to take place, Rauner got a response from Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan.

Emanuel: Chicago remains sanctuary for immigrants

CHICAGO – Mayor Rahm Emanuel said the outcome of the U.S. presidential election won’t affect Chicago’s commitment as a sanctuary city for immigrants.

Chicago has been a sanctuary city since the late 1980s. That means authorities and city officials aren’t allowed to ask residents about their immigration status during routine activities, such as traffic stops.

Police: Van driver cited for killing boy, injuring woman

CHICAGO – Several traffic citations have been handed to the driver of a van that allegedly struck and killed a 2-year-old boy and injured a woman as they crossed a Chicago street.

Police say 48-year-old Alexander Vasquez was cited with failure to stop at a stop sign, failure to reduce speed and failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

Vasquez is accused of hitting Noah Katz and the woman on Sunday afternoon as they crossed a street in Chicago’s Jefferson Park neighborhood.

Noah and the woman were taken to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where Noah was pronounced dead.

Authorities said the woman’s injuries were not life-threatening.

Sheriff: Fisherman finds human torso in Illinois River

RUSHVILLE – Authorities in western Illinois said a human torso was found in the Illinois River.

Schuyler County Sheriff Bill Redshaw told WGEM-TV that a commercial fisherman found the torso and called police about 8:30 a.m. Sunday. The torso was where the river and Sugar Creek meet south of the small village of Browning. The sheriff said a rescue team and the county coroner pulled the torso from the water.

An autopsy was planned Monday in Bloomington.

Schuyler County Coroner Terry Millslagle said the torso appeared to be a man’s remains, and it looks as if limbs were removed. The coroner said the remains look like they had been in the river at least a week to 10 days. The sheriff said the FBI and state officials were involved in the investigation.

Trump considers woman, openly gay man for posts

WASHINGTON – His nascent administration already under attack, President-elect Donald Trump was considering Monday whether to inject new diversity into the GOP by recommending a woman to lead the Republican Party and an openly gay man to represent the United States at the United Nations.

The moves, among dozens under consideration from his transition team, follow an intense and extended backlash from Trump’s decision on Sunday to appoint Steve Bannon, a man celebrated by the white nationalist movement, to serve as his chief strategist and senior adviser.

“After winning the presidency but losing the popular vote, President-elect Trump must try to bring Americans together – not continue to fan the flames of division and bigotry,” House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said.

She called Bannon’s appointment “an alarming signal” that Trump “remains committed to the hateful and divisive vision that defined his campaign.”

His inauguration just 66 days away, however, Trump focused on building his team and speaking to foreign leaders. He remained sequestered in Trump Tower in New York.

Inexperienced on the international stage, the Republican president-elect spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin on the phone.

His transition office said in a readout that

“he is very much looking forward to having a strong and enduring relationship with Russia and the people of Russia.” Trump has spoken in recent days with the leaders of China, Mexico, South Korea and Canada.

At the same time, Trump was considering tapping Richard Grenell as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. He would be the first openly gay person to fill a Cabinet-level foreign policy post. Grenell, known in part for aggressive criticism of rivals on Twitter, previously served as U.S. spokesman at the U.N. under President George W. Bush.

Trump was also weighing whether to select Michigan GOP chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel, a niece of chief Trump critic and 2012 presidential nominee Mitt Romney. She would be the second woman ever to lead the Republican National Committee – and the first in four decades.

“I’ll be interested in whatever Mr. Trump wants,” McDaniel told The Associated Press on Monday, adding that she was planning to seek the Michigan GOP chairmanship again.

Appointing McDaniel to run the GOP’s political arm could be an effort to help the party heal the anger after a campaign in which Trump demeaned women.

The appointment of Grenell, who has openly supported same-sex marriage, could begin to ease concerns by the gay community about Vice President-elect Mike Pence’s opposition to same-sex marriage during his time as Indiana governor.

The past and future of Bed Bath & Beyond Dear Mr. Berko: In November 2008, you told me not to buy Bed Bath & Beyond. It was selling in the low $10s at the time. Well, I bought 300 shares anyway at $18 to help my daughter pay for our grandson’s schooling at Duke. The shares were at $80 late last year. Now they’re down a lot from that, and my stockbroker wants me to buy 300 more shares. He thinks that right after the new president is inaugurated, sales will increase. He says that the board of directors will raise the dividend by 20 percent, to 60 cents a share, that consumer retail sales will boom in 2017, that management plans to open 24 new locations annually and that the stock price could go back up by 30 points and maybe even go to over $80 a share, where it was a few years ago. If that’s the case, he believes Bed Bath & Beyond will split 3-for-1. My broker knows several people in the company’s executive office and seems to be very knowledgeable about this company. Since you bought Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY-$38.12), it rose to $80 a share, earnings have tripled, return on equity has nearly doubled, the number of locations has increased from 1,037 to 1,550 and management has repurchased over 100 million shares. And this year, BBBY paid its first dividend (50 cents) since coming public. That’s impressive, but I think your broker is floating on moonbeams.

All of the above was eight years in the making, and even BBBY’s most enthusiastic optimists (whose numbers are surprisingly legion) doubt that management can come close to repeating that performance.

Management would have to pull a Wells Fargo to meet those numbers again. Your broker may have a lot of knowledge about Bed Bath & Beyond that isn’t accurate, though he hopes it will be so.

I enjoy perusing the large variety of fabulous merchandise in a BBBY store, but I can’t recommend a purchase of another 300 shares. Rather, you should have followed my advice over a year ago to sell BBBY when it was trading in the $60s. As I recall, this money was for your grandson’s college tuition at Duke in the fall of 2017.

The bloom has been off the rose for some time. And that’s reflected in a 50 percent drop in BBBY’s stock price during the past 18 months.

Home goods retailers, along with other bricks-and-mortar retailers, are hurting, and now some of that hurt is reflected in BBBY’s income statement and balance sheet. Margins are falling. Same-store sales are declining.

And though BBBY’s stores continue to be profitable, they are becoming increasingly less profitable. During the past few years, return on capital and return on equity have fallen 20 percent and 17 percent, respectively. Operating margins have slipped from 18 percent to 13 percent, and net profit margins have tanked every year since 2011, from a high of 10.4 percent to an expected 5.7 percent this year. And they’re expected to decline

again next year. It doesn’t end there!

Recent wage pressures are adding to management’s problems, plus the fact that 80 percent of BBBY’s products can be found on Amazon.com at lower prices.

I think BBBY’s share price could move lower, even though Ned Davis Research, Morningstar, Argus Research and Standpoint Research have “buy” recommendations on the stock.

Take a glimpse at the 2016 selling transactions of BBBY’s officers and directors. They’ve sold over 1.3 million shares this year.

Because your grandson will need that tuition money a year from now, I urge you to sell BBBY and lock in your still-significant gain. As you know, that gain could have been more significant at $69. And though unanticipated events or changing circumstances could cause BBBY’s price to rise, the old proverb that “a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush” is compelling advice.

Billionaires put pop in advocates’ push for soda taxes

The Associated Press NEW YORK – After years of stamping out soda tax proposals with well-financed campaigns, Big Soda is suddenly finding itself up against bigger adversaries.

Voters and lawmakers in five municipalities, such as San Francisco, and the county that includes Chicago approved special taxes on sugary drinks last week, with advocates saying the victories point to a change in public attitudes and the beginnings of a movement. What’s also changed, though, is that they’re now backed by billionaire Michael Bloomberg, who as mayor of New York lost a bruising fight to limit the size of sugary drinks.

The soda industry dismisses the notion that the measures amount to a movement, and says the proposals are being pushed in places more likely to pass them.

“It’s sort of a pesky thing that comes up now and then,” Susan Neely, president of the American Beverage Association that represents Coke, Pepsi and others, said before

the election.

Seven U.S. cities now have special, per-ounce taxes on sugary drinks. All were approved in the past two years, and got backing from Bloomberg Philanthropies, as well as from Laura and John Arnold, the latter of whom ran a hedge fund.

Others that passed last week were in Oakland and Albany, California, and Boulder, Colorado. They follow Berkeley, California, in 2014, and Philadelphia this summer.

Bloomberg Philanthropies said it will help others that come forward.

The long-term effects of such taxes still aren’t clear, with studies of recently enacted measures still in progress – some of them funded by $10.5 million Bloomberg dedicated to such research.

Even if taxes of 1 or 2 cents per ounce hike prices about 10 percent and don’t affect how much soda people drink, the industry fears the stigma of being singled out and the potential for the taxes to be increased.

Already, soda consumption has been declining, though other sweetened drinks, such as sports beverages, and bottled teas have grown, and

obesity rates keep climbing.

Still, some see the taxes as a way to curb at least one bad habit, pointing to cigarette taxes that helped cut smoking rates.

‘BIG SODA IS TELLING BIG LIES’

Bloomberg says his philanthropic organization is not orchestrating a national push to tax sodas, but providing help when local organizers reach out.

“These are things that we did not start,” he told The Associated Press.

“They are bottom-up, grass-roots campaigns.”

Still, his deep pockets are putting advocates on a more even footing. In Oakland and San Francisco, soda tax supporters had at least $22 million in campaign contributions this year, largely from Bloomberg and the Arnolds. Tax opponents had $30 million, reflecting the beverage industry’s determination to kill the measure.

Howard Wolfson, a Bloomberg adviser, also provides expertise to tax proponents, including feedback on campaign materials. In San Francisco this fall, TV ads featured the city’s mayor saying the tax would help the

“smallest San Franciscans,” followed by the faces of smiling children.

“Big Soda is telling big lies,” a doctor says in one ad.

Even failed measures such as New York’s serve a purpose, Bloomberg said. “The whole idea was to get a message out,” he said. “If it just went through, it wouldn’t have been a big deal.”

Wolfson said other cities will want to replicate the successful efforts to raise revenue, improve public health, or both. Healthy Food America, which is funded by the Arnolds, said 20 other cities and states expressed interest in such taxes in recent months. The group gives advice on how to structure measures so they’ll pass, and the type of opposition to expect.

“The industry is pretty predictable,” said Jim Krieger, who heads Healthy Food America.

A hallmark of the industry’s playbook, for instance, is calling the measures “grocery taxes” since they’re levied on distributors, who could pass the costs onto any items.

Less apparent are the industry’s behind-the-scenes efforts.

The Joliet area went 2-3 in last weekend’s state football playoff quarterfinals, with Morris, a 12-7 winner over Metamora, and Plainfield North, a 30-7 winner over Rockford Auburn, the survivors.

Wilmington lost to IC Catholic, 48-14, in a game that figured to be difficult for the Wildcats to win.

The two other games involving area teams figured to be close and they were, as Lincoln-Way East fell to Maine South, 34-31, and Lemont came up short against St. Laurence, 27-20.

Our semifinal games will feature Peoria (11-1) at Morris (10-2) in Class 5A at 3 p.m. and Plainfield North (10-2) against Fenwick (11-1) in Class 7A at 3:30 p.m. at Triton College in River Grove.

The task here is to determine how our two teams can win and advance to state championship games Thanksgiving weekend in Champaign.

The Peoria at Morris game is intriguing. Even casual high school football fans heard about Peoria in Round 2 of the playoffs, when the Lions scored an impossible (how was there time to score that many points?) 96-40 victory over Decatur Eisenhower.

Last week, Peoria’s offense cooled off as the Lions won their quarterfinal game over Washington, 68-46.

By the way, that is the same Washington team that Morris beat, 20-3, in Week 2. The Redskins got to this point

Obviously, there will be two different styles, two different philosophies, at work. Peoria’s forte is outscoring the opponent, regardless of how many points that requires. Morris is a believer in defense – helped by a solid running game from its offense – winning championships.

Peoria has speed to burn, and the

Lions have averaged 58.3 points. However, they also are allowing 30.3 a game against what probably is not the caliber of schedule Morris has faced. I look especially at a 70-63 win over a decent but not great Normal West team and a 42-40 victory over Danville, which Lemont ousted, 41-10, in Round 2 of the playoffs.

How about the Northern Illinois Big 12 East, anyway? The league where Morris toils is 9-0 against outside competition in the playoffs. Not only are the

Redskins in the Class 5A semifinals, but so is Sycamore, which will host Vernon Hills. DeKalb, meanwhile, will be playing in the Class 6A semifinals, visiting Prairie Ridge.

The thought here is not only can a good defense, which Morris sports, beat a good offense, but the Northern Illinois Big 12 East is a better league this year than we realized.

Two area freshmen will be headed to this weekend’s Girls State Swimming and Diving Meet at Evanston hoping to medal.

All sectional winners from around the state, plus anyone else bettering the predetermined qualifying times, will compete in the state meet.

Lockport freshman Lindsey Merk scored the best sectional time in the 100 butterfly, 55.52 seconds. Lincoln-Way East junior Makayla Var-

ga recorded the seventh-best time at 56.57. Merk also had the sixth-best time in the 100 backstroke, a 56.83.

The leader there is Gillian Gagnard of St. Ignatius at 56.02.

Meanwhile, Plainfield North Coop freshman Jessica Davis posted the fourth-best sectional time of 1:51.47 in the 200 freestyle. The state’s best time was the 1:50.09 by Stevenson’s Iza Pelka. Davis also qualified 11th in the 100 free at 51.98.

The Redskins are 10-2 all-time in semifinal games.

They always are difficult to beat at home, on their natural-grass field, in the playoffs. And the weather is supposed to take a turn for the worse Friday and into Saturday. If that happens, it would seem to favor Morris, which is physical but not with the team speed to match Peoria.

As for Plainfield North, the Tigers plain and simple are playing well enough on both sides of the ball that nobody wants to see them coming. If you are tempted to say Fenwick has the advantage because the Friars are home, remember that all North did in its last road game was drill No. 1 seed Bradley, 49-20.

The Tigers have been very good defensively all season. There is no reason to believe the defense will not show up against Fenwick, which beat Providence, 35-28, in Week 7 and has ousted Hononegah, 31-10, Lake Zurich, 20-14, and Jacobs, 28-21, in the playoffs.

What has lifted North to an elite level, however, is offensive consistency. The Tigers always had weapons on that side of the ball – regular running back Tyler Hoosman, change-of-pace back Dillon McCarthy and receivers Connor Peplow, TJ Kane and Ryan Krzystofiak. But when junior Brady Miller developed into a true No. 1 quarterback, North took off.

Thanks in no small part to Miller’s emergence, the Tigers have won seven straight and outscored their opponents, 286-34, in that span. That’s an average of 40.8-4.8.

As if there was not enough for an opposing defense to worry about, Miller demonstrated his scrambling ability, which largely had been under wraps, last Saturday against Jacobs. He had rushing plays of 18, 21 and 15 yards and picked good spots for them.

Maintain the same mojo Saturday as they have had going for several weeks, and the Tigers will be difficult to beat.

“I think Jack has been shortchanged a little in how he is viewed.”

Grant then said, “I’m a huge Joe Buck fan. I’ve known him since 1991.”

Some Cubs’ followers feel Buck does not like their team much.

“I think Joe is in a no-win situation,” Kasper said. “Most fans want their hometown announcer calling the biggest games.”

On Vin Scully, who has retired after 67 years calling Los Angeles Dodgers games, Kasper said, “Vin Scully was better than anyone who has ever done this. He takes the same information everyone has and weaves it into a good story.”

“Vin is everything you hear about him, and more,” Grant added. “He has no ego.”

Kasper said he truly enjoys working with partner Jim Deshais in the television booth.

“Jim is fun, and he is not afraid to say he doesn’t know something,”

Kasper said.

In that vein, Grant said, “I have ADD or something. When I was working with Matt Vesgergian with the Padres, he talked about something for a while, and I was probably staring at some shiny object or something – not listening. Then he said, ‘What do you think, Mark?’ I just said, ‘Uh, I got nothing.’ ”

The Maddon effect

Of course, there can be no discussion about the world champion Cubs without mention of how much manager Joe Maddon means to the team’s success.

“It’s interesting, after spending 40 years in baseball, Joe Maddon had not been inside Wrigley Field until August of 2014,” Kasper said.

“From the first day of spring training this year, Joe said, ‘Embrace the target,’ no matter what the expectations were for this team. He zigs when the rest of the industry zags. I like the way he has been talking World Series right off the bat since he was hired.”

Maddon allows the players freedom, feeling that will help get them playing their best.

“Joe’s dress code is if it feels sexy, rock it,” Kasper said. “His thing is to be yourself.”

Grant asked Kasper about the Maddon moves in the World Series that were questioned as the spectacle wound down.

“I really thought he was going to

bring in [Jon] Lester in the sixth inning [of Game 7],” Kasper said. “If Kyle [Hendricks] got into the sixth with no issues, I thought he should have stayed with him longer. But Joe didn’t like the matchups that were coming up and he made the move.

“Once Game 6 passed, he had decided Hendricks, Lester and [Aroldis] Chapman were all he was going to use.”

However, the game went extra innings after the rain delay, and Carl Edwards Jr. began the bottom of the 10th, with Mike Montgomery entering to save the 8-7 victory.

Ross a favorite

Kasper grew up in Michigan, and if there is a team in his lifetime that compares to the 2016 Cubs, he said it would be the 1984 world champion Detroit Tigers.

“They started 35-5 and then went into Seattle and got swept,” Kasper recalled. “They’re still 35-8, but they got swept. Are they going to blow it? No, they were fine.

“The Cubs were 5-15 leading up to the All-Star break, but in the same way, there was never any sense of panic.”

One reason the Cubs were such a calm, collected group was the influence of one of Kasper’s – and everyone’s – favorites, veteran catcher David Ross.

“David Ross came to us a backup catcher, probably the 25th man on the roster, but he was unbelievable, what he did for this team,” Kasper said. “The home run in Game 7, a great clubhouse

leader. He regularly came into the clubhouse early, at about 9:30 a.m., clapped his hands and said, ‘Hey, how you guys doing?’ Everybody loved him.”

Kasper related a story of a time when he received a surprising reaction from Ross.

“One time in St. Louis, I went up to him hours before the game, and he said, ‘Len, get out of my face,’ ” Kasper said. “I was taken aback. I wondered what that was about.

“Well, he had a great game that night and on the plane after the game, he came up to me and apologized. He said, ‘I was feeling terrible, I just could not get myself fired up today.’ ” Before the evening ended, the audience at JCA also heard about Kasper’s love of music, including him helping raise thousands of dollars through his participation in Theo Epstein’s “Hot Stove Cool Music” events in Boston and Chicago.

“Theo’s event is a rock concert, but with a baseball flavor,” Kasper said.

“We had a raffle associated with it last offseason. I pulled out a winning ticket number, and it’s 3516, or whatever.

Then Theo pulls one out, and it’s 1908 [the year the Cubs last had won the World Series], if you can believe that.

“Peter Gammons even wrote about that.”

This offseason, perhaps ticket number 2016 will be the winner. And next fall, perhaps another 5 million Cubs fans will witness the championship parade.

JOLIET – Master of ceremonies Mark Grant introduced Cubs television play-by-play broadcaster Len Kasper as the guest speaker at last week’s Joliet Catholic Academy Hilltopper Banquet with a mention of Kasper’s academic achievement.

“Len graduated summa cum laude from Marquette University. I can’t even pronounce it,” Grant said, intentionally mispronouncing summa cum laude.

The evening of fun was underway.

“You know on the video we just watched, they said the JCA [honor] students had a 29 average on their ACT,” Grant said. “I had a 14, and you got 13 for filling in your name correctly.”

Grant has been the television color man for Padres games in San Diego for nearly two decades. Kasper joined the Cubs’ broadcast team in 2005.

When Grant brought up the topic of how fans assess their broadcasters’ work, Kasper said, “There’s no doubt broadcasters are seen as better when the team is good.”

To which Grant quipped, “I’ve been horrible for 18 years.”

McGee, Vozenilek excited about college plans

cherron@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Michael McGee and Bianca Vozenilek are as tough as you’ll encounter in their chosen sports, but that didn’t prevent the talented Plainfield East athletes from getting a little choked up as they announced their college plans in a ceremony at the school last week.

Softball player Vozenilek will continue her academic and athletic career at Rutgers University in New Jersey, while wrestler McGee will do the same at Old Dominion University in Virginia.

Both McGee and Vozenilek understandably got a bit emotional when talking about all of the support and efforts of their coaches, family and friends to help them achieve the goal that so many high school athletes share, getting the chance to compete at the Division I level.

Vozenilek had an excellent season on the mound last season to help coach Chris Morris’ Bengals capture the Southwest Prairie Conference championship. The league’s most valuable player went 19-3 with a 1.38 ERA and struck out 220 batters in 157 innings.

“It doesn’t even feel real right now,” Vozenilek said. “When I was reading my decision, I started crying.

I’m ecstatic and I can’t wait since this opportunity is great and I’m so excited to go and pursue it. I would have been happy to end up anywhere, but I love the school and the softball program there.

The future Scarlet Knights athlete realizes that she wouldn’t have gotten this opportunity if not for the hard work and encouragement of many different individuals.

“If it wasn’t for my family, my coaches and my friends, I would not be anywhere near where I’m at now,” Vozenilek said. “Having them back me up has been great. Even when I was thinking that I couldn’t do something like this, they were behind me and giving me constant support. They pushed

me further every day to become the player and person that I am today.

“Coach Morris has always held me to a really high standard and I knew I had big shoes to fill since I was a freshman on the varsity, but I feel like I’ve been able to reach that standard. He’s been able to make me get better and better every day that I’ve worked with him. I know that it’s definitely going to be a big jump, but it’s exciting to go to a new level of play.”

McGee became East’s first state champion in any sport when he won the Class 3A title at 106 pounds in 2015.

His suspension was another dose of bad news for a team that lost several players to injuries in an embarrassing 36-10 loss at Tampa Bay that left the Bears with a 2-7 record. Now they will have to get by without arguably their best player, starting with Sunday’s game at the New York Giants.

“Obviously we’re very disappointed,” coach John Fox said. “I think he’s fairly embarrassed about it, but we’ll support him and welcome him when he gets back after serving his suspension.”

As if Jeffery’s punishment weren’t enough, it looks like the Bears will be without star right guard Kyle Long. The NFL Network reported Monday that he will miss the remainder of the season

with an ankle injury.

Jeffery will be eligible to be activated Dec. 12 and play against Green Bay six days later. He leads the team with 630 yards receiving and is second with 40 catches.

Jeffery is playing for the $14.6 million franchise tag after he and the Bears were unable to agree to a long-term contract in the offseason. He was limited to nine games because of injuries a year ago, and now has a PED suspension hanging over him with his contract set to expire again.

“My family and friends have been so supportive. The fact that I have a great support group behind me makes it that much easier. I’m just thankful for everyone who has supported me.”

The future Monarchs athlete feels fortunate to have had some good mentors at East such as Nick Curby, Dave Early and Eric Foster to help prepare him for the next level. He hopes to excel in coach Steve Martin’s program, where Providence Catholic and ODU graduate Kyle Hutter serves as an assistant coach.

“At this point, my coaches aren’t really preparing me to go against high school wrestlers, they’re trying to make me better so that when I get to college that I can hang with those guys,” McGee said. “I’m looking for my second state title but I’m mainly just trying to improve and get prepared for college, for both wrestling and school.

“Our coaches know my style of wrestling and don’t try to change it, just make it better, and that’s awesome. I know it’s going to be tough.

But if I push myself this year and really work with my coaches when I get to college, it’s not going to be as difficult to make that transition.”

SPORTS BRIEFS Bears’ WR Jeffery suspended 4 games for PED violation

LAKE FOREST – Star receiver Alshon Jeffery was suspended Monday for four games without pay for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances, the latest staggering blow for the reeling Bears.

Jeffery posted on Twitter that he took a supplement for inflammation containing a substance banned by the league.

“I take full responsibility and I’m deeply upset with myself for not doing the proper research on this supplement,” he wrote. “I want to apologize to my family, the Bears organization, my teammates, and Bears fans. Seager, Fulmer take MLB Rookie of the Year honors

Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager is the unanimous winner of the

NL Rookie of the Year award, and Detroit right-hander Michael Fulmer beat out New York Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez for the AL honor.

Seager is the 17th Dodgers player to earn Rookie of the Year honors – easily the most of any team – but the franchise hadn’t had a winner since Todd Hollandsworth in 1996. Seager hit .308 with 26 home runs and 72 RBIs this year.

Fulmer went 11-7 with a 3.06 ERA, establishing himself as a Rookie of the Year candidate early on and holding off a late challenge from Sanchez. Fulmer received 26 of 30 first-place votes from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. The votes were announced Monday night on MLB Network.

SHERIDAN – U.S. prisons are experimenting with a high-priced monthly injection that could help addicted inmates stay off opioids after they are released, but skeptics question its effectiveness and say the manufacturer has aggressively marketed an unproven drug to corrections officials.

A single shot of Vivitrol, given in the buttocks, lasts for four weeks and eliminates the need for the daily doses common with alternatives such as methadone. But each shot costs as much as $1,000, and because the drug has a limited track record, experts do not agree on how well it works.

Proponents say Vivitrol could save money compared with the cost of locking up a drug offender – about $25,000 a year for each inmate at the Sheridan Correctional Center, 70 miles southwest of Chicago.

Dr. Joshua Lee, of New York University’s medical school, said more evidence is needed to determine whether the medication can help substantial numbers of people and whether it’s worth paying for, but the early results are encouraging.

“It sounds good, and for some of us, it feels like the right thing to do,” said Lee, a leading researcher on the treatment.

Vivitrol is emerging as the nation searches for ways to ease an opioid epidemic that affects more than 2 million Americans and an estimated 15 percent of the U.S. prison population.

Many experts view prisons – where addiction’s human toll can be seen most clearly – as a natural place to discover what works.

Christopher Wolf had already served prison time for nonviolent crimes when he was ordered into treatment for a heroin addiction by a judge who suggested Vivitrol. Three months later, the 36-year-old from Centerville, Ohio, is clean and working full time as a cook.

He now suggests the medication to other addicts.

“I don’t have cravings,” Wolf said.

“I see how much better life is. It gets better really fast.”

Vivitrol targets receptors in the brain’s reward system, blocking the high and extinguishing urges. In some programs, prisoners get an injection before release, then follow-up shots from any clinic.

For decades, researchers have recognized addiction as a relapsing brain disease with medication an important part of therapy. But most jails and prisons reject methadone and buprenor-

Just ask Joshua Meador, 28, an inmate at Sheridan who hopes to get into the Vivitrol program before his release in January. Before incarceration, he abused both older treatment drugs.

When given take-home doses of methadone for the weekend, he would sell them for heroin.

“When I’m on Vivitrol, I can’t get high,” he said. The drug has no street value or abuse potential.

“You couldn’t design something better for the criminal justice system,” said David Farabee of the University of California at Los Angeles, who leads a Vivitrol study in a New Mexico jail.

“There’s been pushback with other medications, people saying, ‘We’re just changing one drug for another.’ That argument goes out the window when you’re talking about a blocker” such as Vivitrol.

Prison systems in Illinois, Vermont, Wyoming and Wisconsin are trying the drug on a small scale. Michigan is offering Vivitrol to parolees who commit small crimes, if addiction is the reason for their new offense. The federal Bureau of Prisons ran a field trial in Texas and plans to expand the program to the Northeast next year. The drug’s manufacturer hopes prisons will be the gateway to a larger market.

Also known as extended-release naltrexone, the medication won Food and Drug Administration approval for alcohol dependence in 2006 and in 2010

to prevent relapse in post-detox opioid users.

The evidence for giving Vivitrol to inmates is thin but promising.

In the biggest study, sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, about 300 offenders – most of them heroin users on probation or parole – were randomly assigned to receive either Vivitrol or brief counseling and referral to a treatment program.

After six months, the Vivitrol group had a lower rate of relapse, 43 percent compared with 64 percent. A year after treatment stopped, there had been no overdoses in the Vivitrol group and seven overdoses, including three deaths, in the other group. The results, published in March in the New England Journal of Medicine, have been promoted by the drugmaker, Ireland-based Alkermes, as it markets Vivitrol to U.S. correctional systems.

Yet addiction is stubborn. When the injections stopped, many in the study relapsed. A year later, relapse rates looked the same in the two groups.

“It does suggest six months wasn’t enough,” said Lee, the lead author.

T.J. Voller was a Vivitrol success story – until he wasn’t. After Vivitrol was approved by the FDA, Voller talked about getting the shot with The Associated Press and Dr. Sanjay Gupta in a CNN segment. The 30-year-old was back at work and seemed proud of his recovery. But after 10 months on Vivitrol, he died of a heroin overdose.

“He was alone for the weekend and picked up that needle one last time,” said his mother, Kathi Voller of Rayn-

ham, Massachusetts.

Advocates argue that inmates have a constitutional right to all FDA-approved addiction medications throughout their incarceration.

“Treatment should be offered from the moment they are brought into the system,” said Sally Friedman, legal director of the New York-based Legal Action Center, which is looking for a test case to bring to court.

Physicians have learned to be cautious about pharmaceutical company marketing, said Andrew Kolodny, senior scientist at the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University.

Not so for criminal justice officials, who may be too trusting, Kolodny said.

“When the drug company sends someone in to give them a talk and buy them pizza, they think they’re getting a scientific lecture,” he said.

Alkermes spokeswoman Jennifer Snyder said the company’s sales team helps educate corrections staff and community care providers only after they have shown interest in Vivitrol.

There’s widespread agreement that counseling, support groups and treatment for underlying problems such as depression are crucial for Vivitrol patients, said Dr. Joseph Garbely of Pennsylvania-based Caron Treatment Centers, which supports medication-assisted treatment and prefers Vivitrol.

“The disease of addiction is a cunning, baffling and powerful one,” Garbely said. “And you need all hands on deck.”

NEW LENOX – To help active and older adults stay on their feet, The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago at Silver Cross Hospital recently opened a Brain and Balance Clinic in its facility in the Silver Cross Professional Building at 1051 Essington Road, Joliet.

Loss of balance can be caused by medical conditions or when vision, inner ear or muscular systems are not working properly.

Once causes are identified, Brain and Balance Clinic therapists develop an individual program to address the patient’s specific needs including exercises that can be performed home.

Therapists also provide recommendations to the patient and their family members how to create and maintain a fall-proof home environment. They also conduct free screenings to determine fall risk.

The 15-minute screening includes a medical history, blood pressure measurements, and balance assessment to identify risk factors, posture, range of motion, strength, static and dynamic balance.

When Dr. Hetal Amin came to Morris Hospital in August 2014, Morris Hospital got more than an expert allergist. Amin brought along Debbie Miller, who strives to be Debbie Miller the best in everything she does.

Just two years after joining the Morris Hospital team, Miller, of Shorewood, was selected Fire Starter of the Month at Morris Hospital for July.

While her previous experience includes nursing in the intensive care and home health settings, for the past 12 years Miller has devoted her career

to working with Amin. She was instrumental in setting up Morris Hospital Allergy Specialists when the practice started in 2014.

Miller does all of the ordering for the practice, makes the preparations for testing, administers immunotherapy, and handles triage. Miller has special training and certification that allows her to prepare the customized vials, resulting in better treatment and care for the patients.

Shortly after starting her new role as a registered nurse on the 2 South nursing unit, Jen Terry, of Channahon, was named Morris Hospital’s Fire Starter of the Month for August.

Jen Terry Terry began her career at Morris Hospital in 2002 as a transporter.

From there, Terry became imaging service’s department secretary,

where she was the first person outpatients encountered when they arrived in the department for testing. In 2009, she transferred to the Morris Hospital Ridge Road Campus, where she really made her mark.

Terry graduated this past May from Joliet Junior College with her registered nurse degree.

Morris Hospital’s September Fire Starter of the Month Stacey White, of Coal City, enjoys getting to know her patients.

Whether patients reStacey White quire treatment in infusion therapy for a week, six weeks, a few months or years, White seems to thrive on establishing trusting relationships.

White started her nursing career in public health. But after taking a job on midnights on the 2 East/Pediatrics unit at Morris Hospital in 2001, White found

the hospital setting was her calling.

She transferred to ambulatory care in 2007, and she has primarily been stationed in Infusion Therapy.

Donna Ames of Morris

Donna Ames of Morris has worked in the emergency department at Morris Hospital for more than 25 years.

Ames was recognized as Morris Hospital’s OctoDonna Ames ber Fire Starter of the Month. This is the third time she has received this recognition since 1983.

Described as an organized multi-tasker, Ames became Morris Hospital’s very first emergency department unit secretary in 1990, 12 years after joining Morris Hospital as the first med/surg ward clerk on midnights.

Ames orders supplies, tracks orders, communicates with other departments, organizing charts and completes paperwork.

The growing interest in phytonutrients has created a vast supply of supplements lining store shelves. But in general, a pill can’t do what diet can. Getting your phytonutrients from plant-based foods ensures you’ll get a variety of nutrients that work well together. A single serving of vegetables, for example, may provide more than 100 different phytonutrients. The crucial interaction of these phytonutrients is generally lost when you’re getting only one or two substances in a pill.

To maximize your intake of phytonutrients: • Eat phytonutrient-rich foods frequently throughout the day. This helps keep blood levels of these components constant and ultimately more effective.

• Eat at least five to nine servings a day of fruits and vegetables.

• Create a meal around vegetables and fruits. Fill half your plate with color.

• Savor the skins of the fruits and vegetables you eat, assuming you like the taste.

The skins often are rich in phytonutrients.

• Regularly include a wide array of whole grains in your diet.

• Cook your vegetables if that’s how you prefer to eat them. Most phytonutrients are heat-stable.

Dear Reader: Let’s begin by breaking “phytonutrients” into its two parts. First, “nutrients.” These are chemicals in our environment that we need to get inside our body, usually through eating foods that contain them. Nutrients are a necessary part of our body chemistry. Indeed, many are necessary for the life of most living things.

Nutrients include carbohydrates, proteins and fats. They also include metals – such as iron, copper, iodine and zinc – and vitamins. I’d call oxygen and water nutrients, too.

Now to “phyto.” The word comes from the Greek word for “plant.” And that’s primarily where you can find phytonutrients – in plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, dried beans and nuts. These natural compounds give plants their color, flavor, smell and texture.

Phytonutrients are powerful and healthy substances to include in your diet.

There is growing evidence they play a crucial role in helping to maintain human health and prevent a number of diseases, such as macular degeneration and some cancers.

There are as many as 2,000 known phytonutrients. Some of the better-known phytonutrients are isoflavones (in soy); lignans (in flaxseed and whole grains); carotenoids, such as beta-carotene (in carrots and dark, leafy greens); lutein and lycopene (in brightly colored fruits and vegetables); and flavonoids (in red-blue tinted fruits).

Choosing colorful foods (M&Ms don’t count) helps ensure you get as many phytonutrients as possible. Typically, the

My brother and son say goodbye when they leave, but rarely volunteer any information about their plans. I hate to ask, because they are adults and it’s none of my business, but it just seems rude. I’m often startled when they come home late and I am awakened, until I know it’s them and not someone breaking in. If I wake up and they aren’t home, I worry. As I struggle to get through my days as quietly as possible, seemingly every sneeze elicits a “God bless you” from some stranger. If I’m unable to acknowledge it, I often get a “Well, thank you” or some other show of indignation.

It is easy to overlook the danger to this contract. Suppose South wins with the spade ace, ruffs his second spade and plays on trumps. West gets in with his king and leads a diamond to partner. Then a spade through declarer promotes West’s heart 10 as the setting trick.

Instead, South, after ruffing the second spade, should lead a heart to his ace, then play three rounds of clubs, discarding his sole diamond to cut the defenders’ communications -- another scissors coup.
