Grain Elevator – Frankfort In 1842, the first grain elevator was constructed in Buffalo, New York, by retail merchant Joseph Dart. Dart’s invention consisted of a wooden structure that served as storage bins for grain.

Loading the grain into this structure was a steam-driven belt, which had buckets attached to it. As the belt with buckets was lowered into the hold of a ship, the buckets would scoop up the grain and hoist it up into the structure where it was dropped into tall bins.

This is where the term “elevator” originated because this is exactly what the process did. It elevated the grain from the ship and stored it in bins until it was lowered for transport or for milling purposes.

Soon the grain elevator system evolved and became an important part of Chicago’s growth in the 19th century. These grain elevators began to be constructed alongside the developing railroad systems.

As the railroads expanded throughout the Midwest, farmers were able to get their crops from the prairies to the marketplace more quickly and efficiently.

The grain elevator soon became part of a new supply chain of industrialized agriculture, which was made possible by the McCormick reaper and the standardized system of grading wheat introduced by the Chicago Board of Trade in 1857. This system allowed crops of similar quality from a variety of different farmers to be combined by grading for shipping, storage and trading.

These early elevators were often associated with the flour mills they served. The structures were usually timber-framed structures, as were the mills themselves. It was not until the early decades of the 20th century that concrete grain elevators and silos, usually constructed in banks of two or more, began to appear.

The first grain bought in the Frankfort area was by Norman A. Carpenter, who bought for J. L. Hurd & Company of Detroit. Together they built the first grain elevator in 1856 near the Michigan Central Railroad tracks (known as the Old Plank Road Trail today).

Haiti Orphan Craft Fair helps support orphans

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Vendors sold a variety of items – clothes, dolls and cleaning products – at a craft fair Saturday in an effort to help orphans in Haiti.

The Haiti Orphan Craft Fair held at the Judson Memorial Baptist Church is an effort that began at one Joliet resident’s garage sale to support 24 orphans in Haiti.

Mike Tackebury, a member of the church who began that garage sale, said the orphans – the oldest is 14 and the youngest 9 – are very dependent on the

proceeds raised from the event.

“It’s a commitment,” Tackebury said.

Tackebury felt motivated to hold the garage sale to help the victims of the 2010 Haiti earthquake.

Tackebury began a garage sale the same year, raising $1,300, and repeat efforts gathered enough items and traffic that he was able to bring the event to Judson Memorial Baptist Church, which became the official sponsor for it.

He said people who got involved in the event saw it was legitimate and

JOLIET – At the foot of Kathy Wagner’s bed at Joliet Area Community Hospice hung a banner.

The banner had but two words: Finish line.

Imagine the encouragement they gave a woman who’d led a life of gentle ministration and mentoring to her family, other women and her church, First Church of God in Joliet, where Kathy’s husband, Carl Wagner, is a pastor.

“She taught me what love meant,” said Deb Delsasso of Joliet, a member of First Church of God. Deb said she had grown up in an abusive environment, but through her friendship with Kathy, she learned to trust and love without fear of rejection. In fact, years later, Kathy attended training at Guardian Angel Community Services in Joliet so she could advocate for women who had been abused.

That was after Kathy’s oldest son, Kyle, died.

Kyle was just 6 when he began having trouble climbing stairs. He was eventually diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, an inherited and progressively fatal muscle disorder affecting only boys.

He died on Thanksgiving Day in 2008 at the age of 26. Kathy chronicled his story of deep faith in her book, “Of Sojourners on the Narrow Road.”

“Sometimes we feel like we have nothing to offer,” Kathy said in a 2014 Herald-News story. “Kyle showed me that we can be in a state of almost total helplessness and still influence people. There’s no excuse for not doing anything.”

During the years Kathy cared for Kyle at home, she also home-schooled her other four children. By the time Kyle was completely bed-bound, Kathy was home-schooling her youngest two.

Karen Braam of Manhattan, a nurse and friend of Kathy’s, said Kathy frequently moved Kyle to prevent bed sores, which Kyle never had, even rising every two hours at night to do so.

“It seemed like Kathy was always just there, doing what needed to be done, faithfully and in the back-

But Kathy didn’t limit her efforts to care of the children. She also beautifully decorated her home, cooked delicious meals, planned church programs, played the piano at church every Sunday (“Even if she just had a baby,” Karen said) and discussed theology with Carl.

Carl said Kathy was a wonderful listener. She often brainstormed and

shared ideas with him. And Kathy never, ever, complained about raising a large family on a small pastor’s salary.

“She was a great life partner,” Carl said.

After Kyle died, Kathy asked God where he wanted her to serve now, Carl said. And that is when she became trained as an advocate for victims of abuse. Kathy also created

a 12-week “Hope and Healing” class, which she offered at First Church of God so victims could have a faithbased option, too, Carl said.

“Kathy picked me out of a crowd,” Megan Terry of Joliet said about the first time she attended First Church of God four years ago. “She had a way of scanning the lost. She was very discerning.”

Megan said she, too, had an abusive childhood and had become, “tough, hardcore and non-emotional.”

But Megan’s interaction with Kathy changed Megan for the better.

“The more I learned why I was the way I was, the more I softened up,” Megan said. “I’m more in touch with my emotions.”

When the situation called for it, Kathy could be whimsical, almost childlike – or she could be candid and blunt. But Kathy never surrendered to cancer. She was still playing the piano at church on Sundays within weeks of her Sept. 21 death at the age of 64.

So why the “finish line” banner?

The words refer to a passage in the Bible, where the apostle Paul wrote to his disciple Timothy, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7.

According to family and friends, that was Kathy.

Carl said he pointed out to Kathy that she would reunite with Kyle, which filled her with great joy. Karen recalled her last visit to Kathy in hospice.

“I was crying, and she reached out, took my hand and told me, ‘It’s going to be OK,’ ” Karen said. “She said she was looking forward to seeing Jesus.”

Chanooka Wish gets permanent home to serve VIEWS Kris Stadalsky CHANNAHON – Carolyn Koranda sat back in her home office chair and let out a sigh.

The founder of Chanooka Wish had recently received news that the organization would have to find a new location to run programs and store donations and supplies.

For more than eight years Koranda and a small group of people, including her husband, Al Koranda, ran Chanooka Wish out of their Channahon home. Every holiday meant their home was filled with stuff such as Christmas presents, nonperishable food, warm winter coats, Easter baskets and school supplies to assist area families who need a helping hand.

Supplies for programs took over their foyer, living room, dining room, basement and garage for many years. To inventory, sort, organize and distribute, everything had to be loaded into vehicles for transport, then set up again, usually at the village hall, where there was plenty of room.

That all changed the summer of 2015, when the organization had its first real donated space in the basement at Standard Bank in Minooka.

Having more space created the opportunity for Chanooka Wish to grow. People brought more donations (coats, hats, mittens, clothing, food), and the organization was able to serve more people and provide more to its clients.

That changed in September of this year with the buyout of Standard Bank by First Midwest. Koranda found her home once again filled with donations.

Sitting at her desk, she looked up and noticed a business card tacked to the bulletin board. It belonged to Dan Whalen of Martin Whalen Office Solutions in Channahon. It was a light bulb moment.

Koranda contacted Whalen, whom she had known through her kids’ soccer program. Before Koranda knew it, Chanooka Wish was signing a lease for a permanent home in two suites at Martin Whalen.

It was a tough decision to make, Koranda said, because up to that point 100 percent of everything they raised had gone directly back into the community to help others. Now the group would have overhead.

But Koranda is also excited. This year it only took 1½ hours to pack up boxes for Thanksgiving clients. In the past it would take at least half a day. When the work was done, there was no loading into trucks, no transporting to another location.

And after the Thanksgiving boxes are distributed from their offices, there will be plenty of space for families to look through coats, hats, gloves and blankets.

Chanooka Wish is expanding its programs to include one for senior citizens called “Safety Matters.”

With assistance from fire departments and the American Red Cross, area seniors who qualify can have their smoke detectors replaced.

Over the years, Chanooka Wish has grown from a handful of individual volunteers (it still has a core of about 15) to an umbrella under which other entities, such as Minooka Women’s Club, fire and police departments, the park district, library, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, can work together to serve the community in the best way possible.

Next year will mark the 10th anniversary for Chanooka Wish, and the celebration will include an open house at its new facility on Thomas Dillion Drive. Koranda wants to celebrate around Valentine’s Day because the community has always given, “a lot of love and a lot of heart.”

New VFW commander values opportunity to serve

Shaw Media correspondent MORRIS – The Morris Veterans of Foreign Wars John Martin Steele Post 6049 has a new commander, and if you sit down long enough with Mike Ebert, you’ll get to hear about some pretty interesting pieces of history.

Ebert served as second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, 1st Battalion, 73rd Armor in the 7th Infantry Division in Korea and in Vietnam.

He even has his watch set to military time, although he’s been out of the military since 1970.

Elected to the position to replace longtime Cmdr. Jerry Belt, Ebert took up the reins in June and is happy to serve as the leader of the organization.

“It’s an honor,” he said. “You hope you’re up to it, but you need help. I don’t change my clothes in a phone booth.”

The VFW, he said, is all about serving area veterans and their families. The post’s building, located at 309 McKinley St., has a large banquet room that is rented out for events and a separate bar and eatery that is open to the public seven days a week. Profits all go to the VFW’s mission.

Members, along with the VFW Auxiliary, also raise money through Poppy Days and donate proceeds to area organizations that assist veterans.

According to the VFW’s website, members nationwide volunteer nearly 9 million hours to community service projects each year.

Ebert is a relative newcomer to the organization. He became active on Veterans Day 2010 after member Chuck Whitaker asked him if he wanted to come to a meeting. He and his wife had only recently moved to Morris.

“I started coming to the meetings and getting involved,” Ebert said. Ebert said that in his youth, it was natural for him to sign up for the service.

“As a kid,” he said, “I got interested in history and geography. I read books

Morris Area Public Library to start search for new director

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Morris Area Public Library Board will discuss what’s next for the library Monday, after library Director Lorene Kennard recently turned in her resignation and announced she will leave the Morris library Nov. 30.

Kennard was hired as director in June 2014 and started her position in August, after a nearly yearlong search to replace Director Kyla Waltermyre.

According to a news release issued by library board President Steve Larson, Kennard will be accepting a position with another library.

“I want to thank Lorene for her service to the library and to the community,” Larson stated in the news release.

“While her leadership will be missed, I am very confident in the team we have in place and their ability to work together managing the library while we search for a new director.”

Board member Doug Pryor said the board will meet Monday, at its regularly scheduled board meeting, to discuss plans for the future of the library.

Any plans for an interim director and how the board will proceed will be discussed at the meeting, Pryor said.

“We plan to conduct a thorough search in the coming months. We have an excellent library and a very supportive community,” Larson stated in the news release. “While I certainly want to move quickly, it is important that the board takes the time to make sure we bring in the right leader for our team and the community.”

is part of the Solomon Islands, southeast of Papua New Guinea. A Japanese sniper hiding in a tree shot a grenade that was strapped to him. The grenade exploded with the bullet, but the force of the explosion was directed outward and not into his uncle’s body, although he was wounded by shrapnel from the blast.

Ebert was in the ROTC in college, where he majored in history.

“At the time,” he said, “Vietnam was building up, and Korea and Germany were the places to be.”

He was commissioned in June 1965, and within two months, began active duty. He served in Korea for one year, from 1966 to 1967, just over the 38th parallel, south of the Demilitarized Zone.

“This area had been fought over heavily,” he said. “We were to protect Korea from the North Koreans invading.”

Ebert later served in Vietnam, from January to December of 1969, as an armor officer and adviser to the provincial government in a northern province of the country.

“More Americans were killed in the five northern provinces than anywhere in Vietnam,” he said.

LOCAL BRIEF Youth charged after car crash

MORRIS – A juvenile male is at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood after a car crash.

Sgt. Scott Angus of the Illinois State Police said one of the officers was following the vehicle when a second officer came to assist. At that point, the driver of the vehicle fled and then crashed, Angus said.

The crash occurred at 9:28 p.m. on

Interstate 80 traveling east at the 121-mile marker, which is between Morris and Minooka, Angus said.

The juvenile was taken to Morris Hospital and then transferred to Loyola. He was charged with fleeing and eluding and possession of a stolen vehicle, Angus said.

Illinois State Police are investigating the incident, Angus said.

Organizer Debbie Filotto came up with the idea for the craft fair. When she got involved with Tackebury’s garage sale event, she came up with the concept, saying she tends to be a creative person.

“I thought it was a good fit,” she said.

Tackebury didn’t know what a craft fair was until he went to one at a school, and he thought it would be a good idea as well.

“I got involved in this world of crafters and vendors. It’s so interesting because all these people were supplementing their income. It’s more than that.

They develop a community where they support each other,” he said.

With the craft fair, vendors and crafters register and pay for space at the fair.

The proceeds from the rent go to support the Faith in Action Orphanage in Haiti.

Filotto said all the proceeds go to the orphans.

“It’s all going to support, to feed, to cloth and educate [them],” she said.

Cullerton agrees to attend Rauner’s budget meeting

SPRINGFIELD – At least one Democratic leader in the Illinois’ Legislature is accepting Gov. Bruce Rauner’s call for a post-election meeting to discuss ending an epic budget standoff.

A spokesman for John Cullerton said Sunday the Illinois Senate president will be at Monday’s meeting. John Patterson said the Republican governor called it, so it’s up to him to set the agenda. He added that “we are interested in seeing what the governor has to say.”

It was unclear whether Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan would attend. A message left for his spokesman Sunday wasn’t immediately returned.

Rauner said Friday he hoped lawmakers will resume work to resolve the budget impasse when they briefly return to Springfield.

Illinois hasn’t had a budget in more than 16 months. That’s resulted in cuts, including to social service providers.

Medical marijuana use grows slow, steady in Illinois

CHICAGO – Illinois is marking its first year of medical marijuana sales as more states voted on Election Day to allow legal use of the drug.

Despite anecdotes of medical marijuana’s positive influence on patients,

broader data and randomized clinical trials of its use remain very limited, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Officials said there have been very few overt problems with the program since the first dispensaries opened in Illinois on Nov. 9, 2015. Police said they haven’t seen any significant complications and that no patients have had their licenses rescinded for using the drug illegally.

Opponents of the medical marijuana program continue to raise concerns about negative effects, harm from smoking, use by minors and increasing traffic crashes.

“It sends a message to our young people that there’s not a problem with this drug and it’s perfectly safe,” said Dr. Kirk Moberg, medical director of the Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery in Peoria.

PEORIA – Authorities said a central Illinois woman reported missing about two weeks ago has been found dead in her crashed pickup truck along a Peoria County road.

County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll told The Peoria Journal Star that a hunter found Jamie Harroun’s body Saturday morning in the wreckage of her truck along a road in western Peoria County.

An autopsy was scheduled to be performed Sunday. Ingersoll said the Mackinaw woman’s pickup truck apparently “left the road, went through a field, down a hill and struck an embankment.”

She said Harroun may have been headed to Pekin at the time of the crash. Harroun was last seen Oct. 31 in Galesburg.

Trump voters back leader for various reasons

CHICAGO – The voters who made possible Donald Trump’s victory included people who consider themselves moderates and came around to Trump after supporting other candidates.

Some live in the “blue wall” of states in the Upper Midwest that, until Tuesday, backed every Democratic presidential candidate since Bill Clinton won the presidency in 1992. Some voted for Democrats in the past. Some kept their Trump support secret until after the election to avoid scorn from acquaintances and co-workers.

Here’s a look at voters who helped usher in a Trump presidency, and why they did so: ••• In Michigan, Patrick Burke supported Ohio Gov. John Kasich in the GOP primary but “jumped on in full support” of Trump as he bested the field.

The 60-year-old automotive and business consultant lives in suburban Detroit’s MaPatrick comb County, which Burke was home to the “Reagan Democrats” in the 1980s. In 2012, Obama carried Macomb County by 4-percentage points. Trump enjoyed an 11 point-plus margin there.

Trump stands for “making sure that if you work hard that your government is there to help you rather than hurt you,” Burke said, noting that Trump’s message “of prosperity and reducing the debt and a strong military and reforming immigration really resonated” with blue-collar workers.

A drive through Burke’s city Wednesday found more Trump signs than Hillary Clinton, and some took their allegiance to the extreme: One

home’s front lawn featured a large wooden basket with life-sized, scarecrow-like people sticking out and a sign labeling it “The Deplorables,” – a reference to Clinton’s description of half of Trump’s supporters as a “basket of deplorables.” The lawn display also featured a sign that reads: “Climb In There is Room For All.” Burke said Trump isn’t perfect, but he believes the most divisive and vulgar rhetoric “was just all talk.”

“I like the fact that he’s been successful. He has built some incredible things. He has had his failures but he’s had huge successes,” Burke said. “I think that Trump has the vision that we need to have now to get us pointed back in the right direction.”

••• Iraq War veteran Rebecca Zbichorski, 28, of Milwaukee, is a first-time voter who supported Trump because “America needs a kick in the behind.”

A factory worker who gets her health care through the Veterans Health Administration, Zbichorski enlisted in the military at 18 and served nearly eight years as a Marine. She said she sees Trump as a “regular type of guy” who doesn’t care what anyone thinks, which made him the best candidate to give U.S. government the “shake-up” she thinks it needs.

Health care was her top issue as a voter, she said. Identifying neither as liberal or conservative, she would prefer Canada-style national health care.

She notes Trump once spoke favorably of Canada’s system before his current support for working with Congress to repeal and replace President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act. Her family, she said, has had a “nonstop hassle of getting insurance” under Obama’s health care law.

She unapologetically keeps a copy of Trump’s book “Crippled America” in full view of her co-workers. It was a way to broadcast her position, which she sums up with a social media meme, minus the hashtag: “I’m voting

“He’s the slap in the face. He’s the wake-up call,” Zbichorski said. “Let the man do what he’s got to do.”

••• Eileen Barlow, a 56-year-old small business owner and part-time bartender, voted for Trump because he’s a businessman and not a politician. He’s also not a Clinton.

“My grandfather always said that what we need is a businessman Eileen in the presidential ofBarlow fice, and that’s what Donald Trump is,” Barlow said as she stood behind the bar at the local American Legion post in Naperville, readying for a busy night that included a meat raffle.

In her voting lifetime, Barlow says she supported Republicans about 60 percent of the time and Democrats about 40 percent. Most of her family members are Democrats. But Bill Clinton was her “tipping point.” Barlow voted for him twice. Then came the scandal over his sexual relationship with Monica Lewinsky “After what happened with him, it turned me off the Clintons permanent-

ly. Not just that he did it. But admit it.

Don’t stand there and lie to us,” she said.

Obama’s signature health care law was another reason. Both Barlow and her husband are small business owners, and between them have three adult kids. Come Feb. 1, they will be paying just shy of $1,400 a month in health insurance premiums for the two of them, with a $2,500 deductible per person.

“The Affordable Care Act is a mess,” she said. “We’re trying to save for retirement. We paid for our own kids’ college – we’re still paying for it because we didn’t want our kids to be loaded down with debt. And now [Democrats] are talking about giving away free college? Who’s going to pay for that?”

Like a lot of Trump supporters, she said, she kept quiet about backing Trump: “You don’t want to be ridiculed, mocked, told you’re stupid.”

Illinois is a reliably left-leaning state, and Clinton, who was born in Park Ridge, easily won it Tuesday.

She also won DuPage County, where Barlow lives. But Trump resonated with voters elsewhere in a way Mitt Romney didn’t, taking 12 more Illinois counties than the 2012 GOP nominee.

MARGARET L. DeSALVO Margaret L. DeSalvo (nee Ready), age 89. Passed away peacefully on November 9, 2016 at the Joliet Area Community Hospice surrounded by her loving family.

Born in 1926 in Chicago. She attended St. Dorothy Grade School and graduated from Mercy High School. She received her Bachelors Degree from Clark University in Dubuque, IA and her Masters Degree from St. Louis University. Margaret entered the Sisters of Charity B.V.M. in Dubuque, IA in 1945.

After her profession she taught in grade school, high school and college in New York, Colorado, California, Iowa, and Illinois. While teaching at Mundelein College in Chicago, she left the convent after 25 years of dedicated service and continued teaching in Chicago until she met and married Raymond and moved to Joliet. She taught at St. Mary’s Sacred Heart School and was Dean and Senior English Teacher at St. Francis Academy until her retirement.

She and her husband enjoyed traveling, the theater and dining out with family and friends.

Preceded in death by her loving husband of 35 years, Raymond S. DeSalvo (2006); her parents, James and Winifred (nee Quinn) Ready;

her brothers, James and Raymond Ready; and her sister Marie Ready.

Bannon, Priebus named to Trump’s White House staff

WASHINGTON – President-elect Donald Trump made his first two key personnel appointments on Sunday, one an overture to Republican circles by naming GOP chief Reince Priebus as his White House chief of staff, the other a shot across the bow of the Washington establishment by tabbing Breitbart news executive Stephan Bannon as chief strategist and senior counselor.

The two men had made up the president-elect’s chief of staff shortlist, and while Priebus received that job, Bannon’s post also is expected to wield significant clout. The media executive with ties to the alt-right and white nationalist movement was given top billing in the press release announcing their appointments.

Trump’s hires were, at first glance, contradictory, though they fit a pattern of the celebrity businessman creating a veritable Rorschach test that allowed his supporters to see what they wanted. Priebus, who lashed the RNC to Trump this summer despite some intraparty objections, is a GOP operative with deep expertise of the Washington establishment that Trump has vowed to shake up. He has close ties to House Speaker Paul Ryan, a fellow Wisconsinite.

“I am very grateful to the president-elect for this opportunity to serve him and this nation as we work to create an economy that works for everyone, secure our borders, repeal and replace Obamacare and destroy radical Islamic terrorism,” Priebus said in the statement an-

nouncing his appointment.

Bannon, meanwhile, helped transform the Breitbart news site into the leading mouthpiece of the party’s anti-establishment wing, which helped fuel the businessman’s political rise.

Ryan has been one of his most frequent targets.

“Steve and Reince are highly qualified leaders who worked well together on our campaign and led us to a historic victory,” Trump said. “Now I will have them both with me in the White House as we work to make America great again.”

Neither Priebus nor Bannon bring policy experience to their new White House roles. Chiefs of staff in particular play a significant role in policy making, serving as a liaison to Cabinet agencies and deciding what information makes it to the president’s desk. They’re often one of the last people in the room with the president as major decisions are made.

Trump’s adult children, who serve as influential advisers to the president-elect, are said to have been concerned about having a controversial figure in the chief of staff role and backed Priebus for the job.

In announcing the appointments, Trump said Priebus and Bannon would work as “equal partners” – effectively creating two power centers in the West Wing. The arrangement is risky and could leave ambiguity over who makes final decisions.

Trump has long encouraged rivalries, both in business and in his presidential campaign.

He cycled through three campaign managers during his White House run, creating a web of competing alliances among staffers.

Pence could be key in presidential transition

NEW YORK – President-elect Donald Trump’s decision to empower his running mate Mike Pence to steer the presidential transition gives the soonto-be vice president a powerful hand in shaping the incoming government and could foreshadow that he will play an outsized role in the White House.

Pence’s ascension is in line with a recent trend toward influential vice presidents and appears similar to the last vice president who was handed the keys to a presidential transition: Dick Cheney.

As the nation was embroiled in the recount after the 2000 election, George W. Bush informally entrusted Cheney to begin building the government even before the outcome was settled in favor of the Republican ticket.

Some of the work was done sitting around Cheney’s kitchen table in McLean, Virginia, remembered Ari Fleischer, who became Bush’s first press secretary.

“This is a big test for Pence,” Fleischer told The Associated Press.

“If it goes well, it will portend a bigger job for him in the White House.”

Cheney clearly passed that test and became one of the most powerful vice presidents in recent memory, particularly during Bush’s first term.

Cheney not only ran Bush’s vice presidential search team – eventually picking himself – he stocked the administration with veteran Republicans, many of whom he had known for

“The vice president was so influential he barely spoke in meetings because he knew he would see the president alone and could convey his thoughts privately,” Fleischer said.

“Only the truly powerful can be that silent. And when he did talk, it was pretty impactful.”

It is far too soon to say if Pence will have a similar voice in Trump’s White House, but naming him the chairman of the transition team broadcasts to

others in Washington that he will be a key player.

“If you’re given an important role in the transition, it sends a signal to other people that you matter,” said Joel K. Goldstein, a law professor at St. Louis University who is widely considered one of the nation’s leading experts on the sometimes obscure history of the vice presidency. “Other political actors want to deal with you due to your perceived access and influence to the president.”

It also gives the vice president a chance to put his own stamp on the administration. While Trump ran as a political outsider and was not shy in burning bridges to establishment Washington, Pence is a popular GOP figure who may opt to select longtime allies for key roles.

“Those who get new jobs may feel beholden to the vice president and feel responsive to him,” said Goldstein.

“It’s a way of guaranteeing a degree of loyalty.”

Unlike Bush and Cheney, who were friends for years, or Bill Clinton and Al Gore, who were both of the same generation of moderate Southern Democrats, Trump and Pence did not have much of a relationship before the celebrity businessman selected the Indiana governor to be his running mate.

Trump then waffled, having second thoughts about the choice and asking aides if he could replace him.

But those close to Trump say he and Pence, a dyed-in-the-wool social conservative who also served in Congress, have forged a friendship and there is little doubt that the selection of the Indiana governor – as opposed to embattled New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie – sent a reassuring signal to some mainstream Republicans who previously been ill at ease about the incendiary nominee.

Pence’s closing argument was that it was time “for Republicans to come home” and Trump won a higher percentage of Republican votes than his opponent Hillary Clinton did from Democrats, according to exit polls.

EU awaits Trump to assess future of trans-Atlantic ties

The Associated Press BRUSSELS – European Union foreign ministers conceded Sunday that they will have to wait to see what moves U.S. president-elect Donald Trump makes in the weeks ahead and work on strengthening Europe’s role in world affairs until the future of trans-Atlantic relations becomes clearer.

At informal dinner talks in Brussels, the ministers underlined the importance of respecting the choice of U.S. voters and making contact with Trump’s transition team.

“We’re going to have to see what positions the new administration takes in coming months,” Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders said after the meeting ended. “The debate right now is to see how the European Union can boost its voice in the world.”

EU nations are anxious to see how

many of Trump’s campaign announcements – like isolationist positions on security, his rejection of international trade pacts and refusal to criticize Russian President Vladimir Putin – might translate into real policy.

But Reynders denied that it was an emergency meeting or that Europe is in disarray. “What would be bizarre would be talk about the American elections around the world but not among foreign ministers,” he said.

Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni noted that Trump does not take office until January, and that Europe has plenty on its plate until then, such as the refugee emergency and economic issues.

“Europe should be taking care of its own problems and not worrying what is happening on the other side of the Atlantic,” he said.

Given Trump’s clear opposition to major trade pacts, EU officials are all

but certain that the massive Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, or TTIP, will have to be renegotiated, if any life remains in the project at all.

Perhaps the most pressing problem is to understand how Trump wants to deal with Putin.

The EU has imposed sanctions on Russia over its annexation of Crimea and destabilizing role elsewhere in Ukraine. Some of those measures, including asset freezes on individuals and organizations, come up for renewal in January.

EU leaders are due to discuss them at a summit in Brussels on Dec. 15-16, but any signal from Trump about a warming of U.S. relations with Russia is likely to embolden already-reluctant countries like Germany, Italy and others to push for an end the sanctions regime, diplomats said.

“We face the greatest challenges to our security in a generation. This is no time to question the value of the partnership between Europe and the United States,” Stoltenberg wrote.

PARIS – Less insouciant, more policed – France is a changed place since Islamic State extremists killed 130 people in the country’s deadliest attacks a year ago. Fearing it’s becoming more divided, too, survivors and victims’ families marked Sunday’s anniversary of the violence by pleading for national unity instead.

Tourism is hurting, armed forces roam streets and France still is under a state of emergency that rights groups call abusive and ineffective – and that the prime minister now says may be extended yet again.

“We always have this fear that weighs heavily in our hearts. We always try to be careful. And every time we pass by here, we think of them,” said Sabrina Nedjadi, paying respects Sunday at two cafes in her diverse eastern Paris neighborhood targeted in the attacks.

At midday, hundreds of balloons were released to honor the memories of the victims; at dusk, paper lanterns were released into the Canal Saint Martin, bearing red, white and blue lights representing the French tricolor. Onlookers, including many families with children, lined the canal and surrounding bridges, watching silently as the lanterns drifted.

Some fear that France itself is adrift, its government unable to defeat the amorphous extremist enemy even as authorities encroach on liberties the French hold dear.

While French warplanes are targeting IS strongholds in Iraq and Syria, the state of emergency at home allows broadened police powers to search homes and monitor communications. But it could not prevent further attacks on France over the past year, including a truck rampage in Nice by a man claiming allegiance to IS. “Yes, terrorism will strike us again,” Prime Minister Manuel Valls warned this weekend The International Federation for Human Rights warned in a recent report: “France is now in a situation where an ‘exceptional’ regime is becoming permanent, in the name of combating terrorism. Under heavy security, President Francois Hollande unveiled a plaque in his memory Sunday near the Stade de France. Dias’ son, Michael, said his father was “living proof that integration is possible, necessary” to end such violence.

Learning to live again after extremists killed his father was “a personal challenge, but it concerns us all,” Dias said. “Long live tolerance, long live intelligence, long live France.”

Some people cried, others simply lit candles or laid flowers at ceremonies Sunday near the six bars and eateries where gunmen opened fire on unsuspecting crowds enjoying an unusually mild November Friday night.

Notre Dame Cathedral held a special commemorative Mass on Sunday evening. Across the Seine River, mourners, tourists and residents streamed to the Bataclan concert hall, where 90 people were killed by three attackers who also took hostages. The concert hall reopened Saturday night with an emotional concert by Sting.

Jesse Hughes of Eagles of Death Metal, the California band whose con-

cert that night ended in a bloodbath, paid respects at the Bataclan ceremony, placing his hand on his heart as he departed.

Nine people remain hospitalized from the attacks; others are paralyzed. Hundreds still are receiving psychological treatment.

“After this November 13th we lost part of our insouciance. The state of emergency has also contributed to set in a climate of fear,” said Daniel Psenny, a Le Monde journalist who still is recovering from a shot in the arm while trying to rescue a Bataclan victim.

But while some are moving out of his neighborhood, he refuses to cede to fear and remains proud of its diversity – a reflection of an increasingly heterogenous France.

“We must live. We are the ones who enshrine the spirit of this district, the way we live, the way we work, the way we get together. We perpetuate that. If we abandon [this area], that means terrorism has won,” he said.

The coordinated attacks were a wake-up call for France and for Europe. They followed the January 2015

newsroom massacre at the satiric newspaper Charlie Hebdo in Paris and a Kosher grocery store that left 17 dead. But the complex planning behind the Nov. 13 attacks and the high number of deaths revealed a degree of French vulnerability not previously suspected by authorities.

Neighboring Belgium, the starting point of the attacks in Paris, was hit on March 22 with attacks on its airport and a metro station that killed 32 people.

Yet a sign scrawled and posted near the Bataclan, “Love for all, hate for no one,” captures the sense of defiance shared by many.

Since the Charlie Hebdo attacks, “even if there is still worry in the minds of all French people, fear, there is a bit more love ... to the reverse of what you might think, it gives us a desire to be together,” said Gregory Reibenberg, whose wife Djamila died in his arms in his cafe, La Belle Equipe, along with 18 other friends, colleagues and patrons.

“It unifies us more than the other way around,” he said. “Even if it affects us all deeply, forever.”

Minooka shows it belongs in Class 4A state title match

kjasnica@shawmedia.com NORMAL – Every program has a starting point where it puts itself on the radar. For the Minooka volleyball team, that happened Saturday night.

The Indians never had reached the Final Four before this season, but on Friday the Indians beat Stevenson, 2517, 25-13, to earn a trip to the Class 4A state championship match.

Minooka fell to Mother McAuley, 25-19, 19-25, 25-19. Taking the topranked team in the nation to three sets is a big accomplishment, however, and doing that in the championship match is even bigger.

“We get to say we took the No. 1 team in the nation to three in the state championship game,” Minooka’s Alli Papesh said. “Not many people can say that, and having this be our first time down here at state, playing that kind of game, bringing this many fans and having everyone care about each other and want it just as bad ... even though it didn’t turn out our way, we fought hard, and I’m really proud of everyone on this team.”

“That’s an incredible feeling,” setter Brooklyn Bachmann said. “The whole feeling, we wanted to push to this point. We wanted to be the first team to make it to state. That was our goal in the beginning of the year. Once we made it here, we wanted to win it all. We knew we could. We knew we belonged here.

“The outcome didn’t turn out the way we wanted it to, but I don’t think we would have wanted to end in any other situation. We took the No. 1 team in the nation to three. I’m proud of

The Indians did play well overall and actually were stronger defensively and blocking. Offensively, McAuley had only a two-kill advantage. The biggest difference was errors. In Game 1, Minooka had six serving errors, and in the third, McAuley scored seven unanswered points.

The second set was a different story. The Indians brought their “A” game.

Outside hitters Papesh and Rocky Perinar were on fire. Defensively, the Indians were lights out. Junior libero Taylor Baranski did not let a ball drop and came out with some miraculous digs, and at the net, junior middles Olivia Klank and Sammi Hermann were shutting people down.

Papesh ended the night with a court-high 20 kills while adding 10 digs and four blocks. Perinar totaled 12 kills and 11 digs, and Holly Bonde

had four kills and three blocks. Bachmann dished out 31 assists and had 14 digs. Baranski dug a court-high 20 digs, and Klank and Hermann both had three blocks.

New-look Flyers rally from second-half deficit to capture first win

cherron@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – With only four regulars back from last year’s 24-9 squad, Lewis University men’s basketball coach Scott Trost realizes that there will be some challenging moments, especially in the early going, for this team.

With three freshmen and three junior college transfers in the regular rotation, the Flyers will need time to get accustomed to everyone’s style and their veteran coach has cautioned his players that they need to be patient while things work themselves out.

Lewis got a preview of what it will likely face for awhile this weekend when it kicked off its schedule with home games against Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan.

The Flyers were able to make up big second-half deficits in both contests.

But after dropping an 80-75 overtime decision on Saturday to Michigan Tech, they hung on for an 87-83 victory over the Wildcats on Sunday at Neil Carey Arena.

“We’re trying to be really patient and need to make sure that we’re all on the same page,” Trost said. “I’ve been bru-

tally honest with the guys that it might take awhile. We have to get everybody together and accepting their roles. It’s going to take some time. We’re obviously going to be a much better team later in December and early in January than we are now.

“I don’t know if it’s been like this since I’ve been here, and it certainly hasn’t been this way in the last five or six years since we’ve always had a real experienced team coming back. There’s so much more than just running and gunning, and a lot of that’s new and will take some time. They just have to trust the process and what we’re doing and buy in. If we can get everyone on the same page, I think we have a chance to have a really nice team.”

For much of Sunday’s contest, it didn’t necessarily look like the Flyers (1-1) would emerge with a split for the weekend. They fell behind the Wildcats (1-1) by nine points less than five minutes into the contest and still trailed by nine points with just over 13 minutes left.

But that’s when returnees Miles Simelton (17 points), Delaney Blaylock (14 points, eight rebounds) and Capel Henshaw (eight points) and junior col-

lege transfer Nick Norton (18 points, six rebounds) started to take over.

Lewis grabbed its first lead at 59-58 on a three-pointer by Simelton with 9:39 to go.

After Will Carius (29 points, 13 points) made two free throws with 7:32 left to give NMU a 65-61 lead, the Flyers went on a 9-0 run with points coming from Henshaw and Norton to move in front for good at 70-65 with 5:19 remaining.

“Coach talked about bouncing back and that’s what we did today,” Norton said. “We played as a team and played really good at the end. It was an allaround team effort and we’re happy to get our first win. Yesterday we were down and came back, which showed a lot from us and we did it again today. To win these close games, we have to pull together as a team.

“There’s a lot of new guys on this team, but if we can come together as a team and do our part and get each others backs, we should have a successful season. Since we have a lot of new guys, it’s fun to see what everyone brings to the table and how they’ll contribute.”

Lewis only shot 37.1 percent from the floor in the opening half but warmed

up to 45.7 percent for the contest after connecting on 54.3 percent of their attempts after the break. But the Flyers only shot 31.8 percent from three-point range while Northern Michigan hit 16 treys and made good on 43.2 percent of their efforts behind the arc.

The Flyers also received 12 points and seven boards from juco transfer Cristen Wilson and eight points each from returnee Frank Vukaj and newcomer Anthony D’Avanzo. NMU also got 20 points and eight assists from Naba Echols and 16 points from Marcus Matelski.

“Coach told us to be better than we were yesterday,” Simelton said. “He thought that we competed well but urged us to bring a little more today and a lot of guys stepped up, so that was big.

He doesn’t really know yet what we’re going to get every night since we have so many new faces but he hopes that we’ll have different guys who will step up each night.

“He tells us to work hard and not worry, so we just want to go out and compete and just play hard. As of now we’re still trying to jell and find the identity of the team but I think we have a very deep team with a lot of very good players who bring different things to the table.”

over us. It’s unfortunate that we had so many unforced errors in Game 1 and Game 3. When we were errorless in Game 2, it showed how good they could be.”

Minooka will have another year for a large portion of the roster to prove how good it can be. The Indians will return all but one starter.

Four seniors will graduate from the program. Bachmann, Matti Ziech (five digs), Katie Bulger and Kamryn Johnson were huge in leading the Indians to their successful season. They all have high hopes for the team next year.

“They are the most talented team and group of girls that I’ve ever seen and ever played with,” Bachmann said. “They make practice so fun, and they make me love them so much. I wouldn’t want to go out with any other group of girls.”

In the returning players’ minds, this state tournament was only the start.

Now, they plan to keep building up their programs.

“It’s exciting because we know that we can compete with McAuley, and we can compete with them again next year if we see them,” Baranski said. “The fact that they’re the No. 1 team in the nation is amazing. We played our hearts out. I hope for the same thing next year.”

“We made history, and this is now going to turn into our tradition,” Prosek said.

“We were pretty confident as a defense from the start of the season,” Frey said. “We had a lot of returning defensive starters (nine).

“Stoll and I like to get after the quarterback, make him feel the pressure. That’s putting a lot of faith in our corners, and they’ve been doing a great job covering all year.”

Frey and Stoll are North’s leading tacklers. However, linemen Ari Ekowa, Shawn Bruns, Leo Santos, Tim Donnahue and Shane McGrail and a second line of defense that includes Rob Ostapkowicz, Zach Nadle, Dillon McCarthy, Kevin Block and Anthony Fumagalli all have

“Our defensive line does a great job rushing the passer,” Stoll said.

Among the most appreciative of the Tigers’ defensive efforts is their offensive coordinator, Samir Chaudhari.

“Our defense gives us the ball in good position on the field,” he said.

Defense wins championships.

And, defense has been a prime factor in the Plainfield North football team reaching the Class 7A semifinals, where the Tigers will visit Fenwick on Saturday.

North (10-2) lost Southwest Prairie Conference games to Oswego, 12-0, and to Oswego East, 21-14. But now that the Tigers’ offense more or less has caught up to its defense, coach Tim Kane’s team has been rolling.

The qualities the Tigers have featured on both sides of the ball are speed and toughness, along with a team mentality. On defense, for example, inside linebackers and defensive captains Will Stoll and JJ Frey will not blow you away with their raw statistics. But watch them play and you see how often they are involved in the action, whether it’s clogging the middle or roaming to the sidelines to deliver a hit. They are primary reasons North has allowed 34 points total over its past seven games.

“They’re both three-year starters,” Kane said after Saturday’s 30-7 quarterfinal win over Rockford Auburn. “I feel they are the best linebackers around. They don’t get enough credit for all they do.

“They’re disciplined. They make plays all over the field. They pressure the quarterback. They give us two good run stoppers in the middle. They’re smart. They understand our schemes so well.”

Stoll said the familiarity he and Frey have with each other helps the North defense function at peak efficiency.

“I’ll hit the lead blocker and he’ll

That applies on both sides of the ball.

“This senior class, in general, has pretty good maturity. They lead the way,” Kane said.

North played perhaps its best game in Round 2 of the playoffs, when the Tigers traveled to Bradley and ripped Class 7A’s No. 1 seed, 49-20. North led, 35-0, before Bradley had a first down.

Coming off that performance, it almost seemed as if the Tigers were not at their best Saturday against Auburn, yet they won, 30-7.

The offense finished with 390 total yards and 22 first downs. The defense yielded a net of 123 yards (Auburn had 12 plays that went for negative yardage) and eight first downs.

Auburn’s major threats, running back Daqwuan Bell and quarterback Nathan Jarrett, were stifled. Bell rushed for 21 yards in 13 carries, Jarrett for 3 yards in 14 carries.

Jarrett completed 8 of 23 passes for 83 yards.

Kane said the Tigers having faced, and shut down, Bradley quarterback Morion Burtis the previous week helped prepare for Jarrett.

“For sure it helped that we faced the Bradley kid last week,” he said.

“This kid is good, but he’s not quite as fast or elusive as the Bradley kid.”

One more victory, one more team effort on both sides of the ball, and the Tigers will be in Champaign on Thanksgiving weekend. They have convinced anyone watching that is where they belong.

Bears’ coaches deserve most of the blame for embarrassing loss BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush Following their 36-10 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, the Chicago Bears should be ashamed of themselves.

All of them!

You always have to start with the players because they were the ones on the field who failed to perform.

Whether Jay Cutler is released following this season or is kept around for one more year as a bridge to whomever is brought in to replace him is irrelevant.

He can no longer be viewed as part of the rebuilding program.

The Bears could be very good at guard and at center if they can ever keep Kyle Long, Josh Sitton and Cody Whitehair on the field together.

But do we need any more evidence after Tampa that this team just isn’t good enough at tackle?

It is clear to almost everybody who isn’t a member of the Bears’ coaching staff that they have something very special in Jordan Howard and they have no idea what to do with him.

Fortunately there is a great deal more promise on defense, but there is no excuse for the front seven’s inability to finish against Jameis Winston on Sunday.

It is also time to acknowledge that Adrian Amos is unlikely to ever be more than just good enough to sometimes get the job done and in spite of his “fortunate” interception Sunday, Harold Jones-Quartey is unlikely to be even that.

Beyond Howard only Tracy Porter was worthy of our praise Sunday. The Bucs didn’t choose to take Mike Evans out of the game; Porter did that.

All of that said, shame and blame are two very different things and I don’t believe the Bears players were to blame for

what happened in Tampa Sunday, that all belongs to the Bears’ coaching staff.

Coaches don’t get hired for one or two great game plans, so they shouldn’t be fired for them either.

John Fox comes with a track record that is much better than what we saw Sunday and has earned the chance to prove he can do better.

But Sunday’s mess has to be a referendum on what Fox has wrought in Chicago to date, and without significant improvement over the next seven weeks, his firing has to be on the table.

We asked repeatedly in the week leading up to the Bucs game how a 2-6 team could be so confident and that

has to be on the head coach, as does his team’s failure to show up.

But most disturbing about Fox’s efforts to date in Chicago is his decision to make Dowell Loggains his offensive coordinator.

Greg Roman is one of the best offensive coordinators in the league, but was fired after week two in Buffalo.

Greg Olson is quite accomplished as well, but was fired two weeks ago in Jacksonville.

Norv Turner once won a Super Bowl ring in the job but is now out in Minnesota.

What exactly are Loggains’ qualifications for the job?

The Bears first half play-calling in Tampa Sunday was a joke, clearly the best laugh the Bucs have had in some time. Loggains may someday prove to be a fine football coach, but his play-calling Sunday set his team up for failure and was more responsible for Sunday’s embarrassment than anything any player did including Cutler.

The Bucs clearly had no answers for or ability to stop Howard, so Loggains did it for them.

What Fox does now about the play-calling and his players’ preparedness to play over the next seven weeks should ultimately dictate his future and that of his staff as well.

For now they should just be really embarrassed. Bears players and fans deserve better and it’s Fox’s job to make sure that happens.

Defense gives up big play to Winston; offense loses Kyle Long to injury

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com TAMPA, Fla. – A game between a last-place Bears team and a Buccaneers team that had yet to win at home wasn’t going to get a whole lot of play on national highlight shows.

Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston changed that with his escape artist scramble and ensuing 39-yard heave to receiver Mike Evans, turning a potential safety for the Bears into a first down for the Bucs. He then threw a 43-yard touchdown pass on the next play to put the game away.

The play blew up on social media and will be the top highlight shown from the Bears’ ugly 36-10 loss Sunday, one Bears players won’t want to watch.

“I couldn’t believe it. I couldn’t believe he was able to come down with

it,” said cornerback Tracy Porter, who held Evans without a catch in the first half and had a chance to knock the pass down, which would have forced a punt. “I went up to make a play on the ball, and he was able to give me a little nudge so he could get some freedom and make the catch.”

The Bears’ defense wasn’t the problem Sunday. Quarterback Jay Cutler threw two interceptions and lost two fumbles, while the defense stopped the run and pressured Winston, but the one play in which it couldn’t get home is the one that’s going to linger.

“That was a critical play because if we would’ve stopped him right there, that would’ve flipped the field,” said nose tackle Eddie Goldman, who had a sack in his first game back since Week 2. “And that’s what we needed at that time. Stuff like that happens, though.”

OLB Leonard Floyd had the first shot at Winston, then OLB Willie Young. Winston scrambled all the way back to his own end zone as he eluded the Bears’ pass rushers before launching the pass to Evans.

“It definitely felt like an eternity,” Porter said. “You want to look back a little bit to see if they’re going to get him down, but you have to keep your eye on the receiver, and while he’s scrambling around, you can’t let him out of your sight.”

That play, on the first drive of the second half, all but ended any hopes for a Bears comeback.

Major injuries: Right guard Kyle Long had his ankle rolled up on and left on a cart at the start of the second quarter, a brutal blow to the Bears and to the three-time Pro Bowler. Coach John Fox did not know the severity of the injury,

but it didn’t look good for Long, who received hugs from his teammates on offense as well as the Bucs’ defensive players. Right tackle Bobby Massie left the game with a concussion, NT Will Sutton left with an ankle injury and Fox said running back Jordan Howard had an “Achilles’ /ankle” injury.

Edge rushers make impact: If they weren’t getting to Winston, the trio of Young, Floyd and Pernell McPhee made life very difficult on a Bucs’ offensive line that had three holding penalties.

“They’re a good group. They present a challenge. I think the guys play hard,” said Bucs right tackle Demar Dotson, who had two holding flags.

“They’re no walk in the park, by far.

They did some good things today. You take your hat off to those guys. They fought from start to finish.”

CHIEFS 20, PANTHERS 17: At Charlotte, North Carolina, Marcus Peters stripped Kelvin Benjamin with 20 seconds left, Cairo Santos kicked a 37yard field goal as time expired and the Chiefs overcame a 17-point deficit.

The score was tied when Benjamin caught a pass from Cam Newton, and Peters ripped the ball from his arms.

Santos’ fourth field goal of the day split the uprights, lifting the Chiefs (7-2) to their fifth straight victory and 17th win in their past 19 games.

Newton threw for 261 yards and a touchdown and ran for 54 yards and a score for the Panthers (3-6).

EAGLES 24, FALCONS 15: At Philadel-

phia, Ryan Mathews ran for 108 yards and two touchdowns, while a tenacious defense held down the league’s highest-scoring offense.

Carson Wentz threw for 231 yards and led the Eagles (5-4) to a comeback victory for the first time this season.

Caleb Sturgis made three field goals, including a clutch kick from 48 yards to seal the win.

Matt Ryan threw a 76-yard touchdown pass to Taylor Gabriel in the fourth quarter to give Atlanta (6-4) a 15-13 lead, but Philadelphia answered.

REDSKINS 26, VIKINGS 20: At Lando-

ver, Maryland, Kirk Cousins threw for two touchdowns, Preston Smith had two sacks and a game-altering interception in Washington’s first victory in almost a month.

Washington (5-3-1) got all of its second-half points off the foot of Dustin Hopkins, who hit four field goals, including a 50-yarder. The Redskins shut out Minnesota (5-4) in the second half, and Smith sacked Sam Bradford in the final seconds to hand the Vikings their fourth consecutive loss.

Cousins was 22 of 33 for 262 yards

with touchdown passes to Vernon Davis and Jamison Crowder. Robert Kelley ran for 97 yards, helping Washington bounce back from a rough 6-minute stretch.

TITANS 47, PACKERS 25: At Nashville,

Tennessee, Marcus Mariota threw for 295 yards and four touchdowns in the rout. Five Titans scored a touchdown in the first half as Tennessee put together its best scoring performance this season with 35 points.

With the win, the Titans (5-5) also matched their five victories over the past two seasons combined.

DeMarco Murray set the tone on the opening play from scrimmage, running 75 yards for a touchdown. He finished with 123 yards and also threw a TD pass, becoming the first nonquarterback to do that for this franchise in the same game since Earl Campbell on Sept. 7, 1980, for the then-Houston Oilers. The Packers (4-5) started a threegame road swing by losing their third straight.

TEXANS 24, JAGUARS 13: At Jacksonville, Florida, Brock Osweiler threw two touchdown passes and Kareem Jackson returned an interception 42 yards for a score. The Texans (6-3) scored on offense and defense and set up another score with special teams, a complete team effort that led to their first road win of the season. It kept them perfect (3-0) against the AFC South. They won their fifth in a row against Jacksonville.

The Jaguars (2-7) lost their fourth straight and fell to 0-4 at home. Coach Gus Bradley’s team rallied late, with Blake Bortles hitting Allen Robinson for a touchdown and again for a 2-point conversion.

The loss dropped Bradley’s record to 14-43 in four seasons and prompted even the most loyal supporters to question why owner Shad Khan hasn’t made a change.

RAMS 9, JETS 6: At East Rutherford,

New Jersey, Alec Ogletree intercepted Bryce Petty with just less than two minutes left to clinch this snoozer.

Petty made his first NFL start in place of an injured Ryan Fitzpatrick, but couldn’t get much going against the Rams’ defense.

After getting the ball with 2:55 remaining and down by three, Petty tried to lead the Jets (3-7) downfield.

But Petty’s pass to Quincy Enunwa was picked off by Ogletree and Enunwa tried to wrestle it away from the linebacker to no avail.

Greg Zuerlein kicked three field goals, including a go-ahead 34-yarder

with 6:52 left, helping the Rams (4-5) snap a four-game losing streak and avoid their first five-game skid since Weeks 9-13 last season.

COWBOYS 35, STEELERS 30: At Pittsburgh, Ezekiel Elliott ran for 114 yards and two touchdowns – both in the final two minutes – and had an 83-yard catch-and-run for a score as the Cowboys pulled off a thrilling victory for their eighth straight win.

Dak Prescott overcame an early fumble to pass for 319 yards and two scores for Dallas (8-1), which matched the longest single-season win streak in club history behind the two rookies who hardly seem bothered by the stage. Dez Bryant added six catches for 116 yards, including a 50-yard touchdown reception. Pittsburgh is 4-5.

Ben Roethlisberger threw for 408 yards and three touchdowns. Antonio Brown caught 14 passes for 154 yards, including a 15-yard score with 42 seconds left after Roethlisberger faked a spike to surprise the Dallas defense.

DOLPHINS 31, CHARGERS 24: At San Diego, Kiko Alonso intercepted Philip Rivers’ pass and returned it 60 yards

for a touchdown with 1:01 left to give Miami a fourth straight win. The Dolphins (5-4) intercepted Rivers four times, all in the fourth quarter.

Rivers threw three touchdown passes to move past John Elway for eighth place on the career list with 301. Rivers’ 51-yard touchdown pass to Williams with 4:04 left gave the Chargers (4-6) a 24-21 lead.

Miami came right back to get a 27yard field goal from Andrew Franks to tie it. That was set up by Ryan Tannehill’s 56-yard pass to DeVante Parker and a roughing-the-passer call that put the ball on the San Diego 10.

CARDINALS 23, 49ERS 20: At Glendale, Arizona, Chandler Catanzaro kicked a 34-yard field goal as time expired. Catanzaro missed twice on winning field goal tries earlier in the season, most memorably a 24-yarder in overtime of a 6-6 tie against Seattle.

But this attempt was right down the middle as Arizona (4-4-1) narrowly averted a devastating loss.

The 49ers (1-8) lost their eighth in a row despite a strong game by Colin Kaepernick, who tied it 20-20 on a 4-yard run with 1:55 to play.

NEW ORLEANS – Denver’s Justin Simmons used a perfectly timed leap over the offensive line to block an extra-point kick that would have given New Orleans (4-5) a late lead, Will Parks ran it back 84 yards for a defensive 2-point conversion, and the Broncos pulled out a wild 25-23 victory over the Saints on Sunday.

It was the first such play to provide the winning points in an NFL game.

The rule was instituted last year.

The Broncos then recovered an onside kick and ran out the clock.

Safety Darian Stewart intercepted Drew Brees twice and recovered a fumble for the Broncos (7-3), while Trevor Siemian overcame two interceptions by passing for touchdowns to Jordan Taylor and Demaryius Thomas.

Kane helps Blackhawks hand Canadiens 2nd regulation loss

CHICAGO – Patrick Kane scored a spectacular tiebreaking goal in the second period and the Blackhawks beat Montreal, 3-2, on Sunday night, handing the league-leading Canadiens just their second regulation loss of the season.

Marian Hossa added his team-leading ninth goal and rookie Gustav Forsling scored his first in the NHL as the Hawks improved to 9-0-2 in their last 11 games and ended Montreal’s four-game winning streak.

Shea Weber and Andrei Markov scored for the Canadiens in a matchup of conference leaders.

Both goalies faced teams from their hometowns. Canadiens backup Al Montoya, a Chicago native, made 32 saves.

The Hawks’ Corey Crawford, from Montreal, stopped 21 shots.

Kane put the Hawks ahead 3-2 with 3:37 left in the second period to cap a terrific individual effort. Kane skated down the slot, fooled Jeff Petry with a move and chipped a shot past Mon-

toya – while falling to the ice with Max Pacioretty checking him closely from behind.

The 37-year-old Hossa has goals in four straight games and eight of nine.

His 508th career goal on Sunday moved him past Canadiens icon Jean Beliveau into 40th place on the NHL’s all-time list.

The Hawks have not lost in regulation since Oct. 21 at Columbus.

Artem Anisimov, who entered tied with Kane for the Hawks points lead with 17, returned after missing one game with an upper-body injury.

Montreal forward Andrew Shaw, a member of the Hawks’ 2013 and 2015 Stanley Cup teams, played his first game at the United Center after a salary cap-forced trade to the Canadiens last summer. Shaw got a standing ovation from the crowd of 21,762 during a video tribute in the first period.

Forsling opened the scoring with 7:54 remaining in the first on a screened shot from the left point. With several players in front, the drive sailed past Montoya’s glove.

NASCAR: SPRINT CUP

AVONDALE, Ariz. – After more than three hours of racing, NASCAR’s championship field was decided over two frenzied overtime restarts.

Matt Kenseth probably should have won Sunday to earn an automatic berth into next week’s title-deciding race. But the first attempt at a two-lap sprint to the finish went haywire and Kenseth collided with Alex Bowman.

Just like that, Joey Logano was the new leader and defending NASCAR champion Kyle Busch was second. The two started the day tied in the standings, and any 1-2 finish would put them both in the final four at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Logano won the race – the second time in this Chase he used a victory in an elimination race to advance – and will race for his first Sprint Cup title next Sunday. He’ll be trying to give Roger Penske a season sweep during its 50th anniversary season. Simon Pagenaud won the IndyCar title in September.

before,” Logano said. “There was so much on the line and everyone brings their A-game when it comes to winning championships and this team did it.

Busch finished second and earned a chance to defend last year’s title. He’ll meet Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson, who is seeking a record-tying seventh championship, in Homestead.

JGR, which was trying to get all four of its Toyotas into the final, wound up with only two and Busch wasn’t feeling celebratory. He believed his contact with Bowman triggered the accident that wrecked Kenseth’s season.

“It’s really unfortunate and devastating to have the race come down like that,” Busch said. “That’s so frustrating and aggravating, and I feel horrible.”

Eliminated from the playoffs on Sunday were Kevin Harvick, an eight-time winner at Phoenix who had raced in the last two finales, as well as his Stewart-Haas Racing teammate Kurt Busch.

Gibbs drivers Kenseth and Denny Hamlin also were knocked out of the field.

JOLIET – Cheri Johnson was honored by the Joliet-based Project Acclaim organization for her work with dogs that help comfort abused children.

Johnson, who began working with Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow on the Paws 4 Kids program in 2012, received The Allen Award during the recent 2016 Honors and Recognition Banquet.

The award is named after the founder of Project Acclaim, the Rev. James E. Allen, and is presented to those who demonstrate a commitment to community service.

State’s Attorney Glasgow launched Paws 4 Kids through the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center and turned to Johnson, who has worked for years raising and training puppies on behalf of the Leader Dogs for the Blind organization.

Her personal dog, Jackson, is licensed through Therapy Dog International and was the first canine to begin comforting children who visit the Center for victim-sensitive interviews that are conducted during child sexual abuse investigations. These interviews, recorded in a child-friendly, neutral environment, have been used to successfully prosecute literally thousands of child predators.

Jackson is a 63-pound Labrador Retriever. Since then, Johnson has brought her other personal dog, Malley, also a Labrador Retriever, as well as two highly trained facility dogs, Kiwi and Angus, both English Labradors, into the fold at the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Angus works with support groups associated with various specialty courts; Kiwi also works in the Children’s Advocacy Center and will be comforting children when they testify in court. For information about Project Acclaim, visit www.projectacclaim.org.

Reassure your daughter beforehand and as she goes through puberty Note to readres: This column originally ran in November 2014.

Dear Dr. K: What should I expect when my daughter goes through puberty? How can I help her as she goes through these changes?

Dear Reader: Full disclosure: I don’t have any personal or parental experience to tap into for this question. Experienced colleagues and friends always emphasize how important it is to discuss puberty with your daughter before these changes begin. She needs to know what to expect and also that these changes are perfectly normal. Otherwise, she might be frightened by the first signs of change, such as her first menstrual bleeding. Puberty typically lasts for four or five years. In girls, it usually starts between the ages of 8 and 13. Remind your daughter it is normal to begin puberty anywhere within this range. (But do mention it to your child’s doctor if your daughter is showing signs of puberty before age 8, or if there are no signs of puberty by age 13.)

During puberty, the whole body changes shape and size. For most girls, the first sign of puberty is breast growth. This will start with a small round lump (breast bud) under one or both nipples. The lump gradually will grow, along with the dark area around the nipples (areola). A family friend once told me her daughter had become terrified she might have breast cancer when her breasts started to grow. This happened not long after the girl overheard her mother telling a friend “breast cancer runs in my family.”

Girls gain weight and muscle and grow taller during puberty. This growth peaks about one year after puberty has begun. The storage of body fat also changes, so the hips, buttocks and legs get larger while the waist

Hair grows in the pubic area, on the legs and under the arms. Glands in the skin make more oil and sweat. Body odor and acne may become noticeable.

Most girls begin to have periods (menstruate) about two years after the start of breast development. On average, in the United States, girls get their first period around age 12½. However, menstruation may start as early as 9 years or as late as 17 years old. A girl’s first few menstrual periods tend to be irregular, until the ovaries mature and start to produce eggs regularly.

In addition to these physical changes, puberty brings emotional changes. For example, many preteens feel anxious or self-conscious about the physical changes of puberty, especially when comparing themselves with others. Your child’s moods also will change quickly and often during this time. Mood swings are normal and probably are related to changing hormone levels.

Do your best to support, encourage and guide your daughter though this new and different, but also exciting and important, time. Even if you’ve done a good job of explaining what to expect, the changes of puberty may frighten your daughter. Your ongoing explanation and reassurance are as important as your preparation of your daughter for the coming of puberty.

Dear Abby: My DEAR ABBY fiancé, “Allen,” and I have dated Jeanne for almost three Phillips years and have been living together for three months. When we met, he had been divorced for more than two years. Allen has a 13-year-old son and a 19-year-old daughter.

His kids learned about me after we had dated a year. His daughter, “Jen,” attends college out of state. When she visits home, she stays only with her mom.

Last summer, Allen and I decided to buy a house together, found the perfect one and went to make an offer when Jen stepped in and said if we lived together before August, after she returned to school, she wouldn’t have anything to do with him. He told me I can’t live with him until August. I was devastated, but I didn’t have a choice. Now we have a house together, Jen said she wants to spend time on Thanksgiving here at the house without me or my kids. She cried to her dad, saying if he doesn’t do this he’s excluding her and choosing my kids and me over her.

This will be my first holiday with my fiancé, and I was really looking forward to it. We were having friends and family over. But now, because of her request, he wants me to leave for a few hours in the morning. I’m torn. I feel like her behavior is extremely rude and he shouldn’t give in to her, but she said she’ll only see him under these conditions. Do I leave my house for a few hours on Thanksgiving, or tell her she’s welcome but the kids and I are staying in our own home? – Disrespected Out West Dear Disrespected: It’s time for you and Allen to have a serious discussion. Jen’s demand is unreasonable. Have you set a wedding date yet?

Dear Abby: I’m 17, and a friend of mine who lives out of state, “Jane,” has just told me she has dissociative identity disorder (formerly known as multiple personality disorder). I don’t know how I should behave around her now because large parts of our history have correlated to various identities. Some have come onto me, but others seemed to hate me. Do you know where I can find help for dealing with a person afflicted by this? She doesn’t want to tell her psychiatrist, and so far, only I and another friend know. – Worried How To Behave Dear Worried: If your friend’s psychiatrist doesn’t know that she has dissociative identity disorder, I would hesitate to accept her self-diagnosis and so should you. The kindest thing you can do for her would be to urge her to fully disclose any symptoms she’s been experiencing to her doctor, because if what you have written is accurate, she has not been doing that.

The existing boat ramp will be widened from 15 ft. to 36 ft. The proposed "T" shaped boat dock is 25 ft. wide and 50 ft. long. A temporary sheet pile cofferdam is needed.
