bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Funding for the Rialto Square Theatre became the big topic at the first City Council budget meeting Thursday, and it rubbed some the wrong way.

“It’s unfair – the position the city of Joliet has been put in,” Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said, giving a clear signal that getting Rialto funding for 2017 could be difficult.

The meeting included exchanges between O’Dekirk and Rialto board Chairman Dan Vera, with the mayor accusing Vera of telling him months ago that he did not care if the city continued funding. Vera disputed the characterization.

The Rialto wants $500,000 for 2017, but there is no money in the city budget for the theater.

That could change before the budget is approved, and several people speaking on behalf of the Rialto urged the council to support the theater. However, no one on the council called on the theater to add the

VenuWorks came in Sept. 1 at a rate of $1 a month on a short-term arrangement, with expectations to enter a contract in January.

Since then, the company has started an assessment of operations.

“We turned around to the foundation and said we can’t operate with this much debt,” Peters said. “We can’t assume a business deal with an operation that has this much debt.”

The discussion frequently revisited issues of the past year, including the Rialto’s refusal to let the city’s inspector general do an examination of theater operations.

O’Dekirk said Vera knew that the Rialto’s position jeopardized future city funding.

“You said you didn’t care. You didn’t want the money,” O’Dekirk said to Vera.

Vera told O’Dekirk that he was only saying during the discussion that he understood the city’s position, but he was following advice of the Rialto’s attorney.

“I wasn’t flipping you off,” Vera said. “It wasn’t an affront to you.”

State election fierce, might not have settled anything

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The political power struggle in Springfield was on display in at least one local legislative race in Tuesday’s election – and it does not appear to be settled yet.

Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Shorewood, overcame a fierce Republican challenge, one of several attempts across the state to erode the Democratic majorities in the Legislature.

The 49th Senate District contest was characterized by a barrage of negative mail, mainly aimed against Bertino-Tarrant. One bizarre mailing digitally altered a photograph of House Speaker Michael Madigan to put him in a dress and female hairdo in what appeared to be an attempt to link him with Bertino-Tarrant. On Wednesday, Bertino-Tarrant credited her election victory to door-to-door campaigning.

“We hit a lot of doors and actually had long conversations with people,” Bertino-Tarrant said. “We knocked on thousands of doors.”

“We’re on the same page,” O’Dekirk said. “But I am aggravated that, in the middle of November, all these people come to a meeting and lean on us to give money to a company we didn’t pick.”

O’Dekirk referred to VenuWorks, the management company hired by the Rialto to run the theater.

VenuWorks President Steve Peters led off the meeting with a presentation that showed the Rialto expected the theater would have a $500,000 deficit in 2017 without the city subsidy.

Peters later in the meeting, amid questions of whether the city should help fund the Rialto, said VenuWorks would not continue managing the theater if a solution was not found to a growing list of unpaid bills.

Bertino-Tarrant’s victory helped secure a supermajority for Democrats in the state Senate. The election, however, also gave Republicans a net gain of four seats in House, taking away the supermajority from Madigan in that chamber.

Bertino-Tarrant said it was difficult to tell what impact the election will have on the budget impasse in Springfield.

“Obviously, we could continue to stalemate because everything that gets done by the Legislature does not get signed by the governor,” she said. Bertino-Tarrant also speculated that the loss of a supermajority in the House “could lead to people coming together.”

State Rep. Mark Batnick, R-Plainfield, who ran unopposed Tuesday, agreed that the loss of the veto-proof supermajority in the House could lead to more compromise, but maybe not.

“There are two schools of thought, and I don’t know which one is correct,” he said.

Madigan has been the major target for Gov. Bruce Rauner, and Republicans across the state tried to defeat Democrat legislators by associating them with the party leader from Chicago.

Although that spending led to Republican gains in the Legislature, Democrats maintained majorities. Rauner lost the only statewide office on the ballot Tuesday.

Democrat Susana Mendoza defeated Comptroller Leslie Munger. Munger had been appointed by Rauner and received investment from him for her campaign.

Munger received $2 million from the governor and another $5 million from two businessmen with ties to Rauner.

The contest had local connections in that Mendoza, now the city clerk in Chicago, grew up in Bolingbrook where she was an all-state soccer player at Bolingbrook High School. Munger was a Joliet West High School graduate, but now lives in Lincolnshire.

Romeoville’s Cruz family stays active when father is overseas

Shaw Media correspondent Brothers Lathan and Lucas Cruz love to fish with their dad at a lake by their Romeoville home, but those beloved trips, where the boys catch small mouth and largemouth bass, will have to wait until next fall, when their dad returns from Kuwait.

Lathan, 10, and Lucas, 7, already have endured one of their father’s deployments at the ages of 3 and 1, so this time they are more aware of the situation.

“The hard part is he is missing holidays, like when I went trick-or-treating a couple days ago, and he will miss my birthday in the summer,” Lucas said.

Lathan said his dad will miss all of his baseball and football games, as well as holidays and new movies that come out, but he knows deployment comes along with military life.

“I feel bad since he left, but I understand that it’s his job and he has to do it. It is pretty cool that my dad is in the military and I can tell people that my dad is a hero, and he’s my hero, too,” Lathan said.

On Oct. 2, more than 100 Army Reserve soldiers from the Elwood-based 251st Inland Cargo Transportation Company left Illinois for a yearlong deployment, first to undergo extensive training in Texas, and then to Kuwait in support of Operation Spartan Shield.

Staff Sgt. Joshua Cruz was among the soldiers who left that day, and for the second time had to leave his wife, Amanda, and two young sons.

Amanda said that because this was the family’s second deployment, she knew what to expect a little more, but physical and mental preparations were at the forefront.

Amanda said there were talks of deployment early in 2016, but until the final papers were in her hands this summer, she chose to wait to take action to keep the family household in a normal stride.

“The main thing we had to do is have a will and power of attorney ready. We are married, so we didn’t have to worry about custody of the children or the house,” she said. “Before he left, we tried to keep things as normal as possible, but spend extra time together, but not too much. We had to keep life normal.”

Amanda, a stay-at-home mom, said this deployment has been different because of the ages of her boys. When they

“This can be time to find myself again, figure out where I want to go with a job, hobbies and school,” Amanda said.

To fill the void, Amanda said she tries to keep the boys and herself active. Both boys are in sports, and in the offseasons

they like to play at the park, have dinner with friends, go to the movies, watch family movies or run an extra errand to get them out of the house. The boys said that now that they are old enough, they have jobs they can do around the house to help their mom.

“I take out the garbage, make by bed, pick up after the dog, and since my dad isn’t home, I could maybe watch my brother for my mom if she had a small errand,” Lathan said.

Amanda said deployment offers highs and lows. She said it gives her an overwhelming sense of pride of being an American and a part of a military family. She also uses time to talk to people about deployment.

“The lows are my husband being gone for a year, having someone to talk to, go over family decisions and bills with, and share family gatherings and holidays,” Amanda said.

When his dad returns next fall, Lucas said, “I will tell him about school, play outside with him and knock on friends’ doors to see if we can all play football.”

Second semi fatality in Joliet Man struck on I-80 Wednesday night

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A man died Wednesday night after being struck by a semitrailer on Interstate 80, the second truck-pedestrian fatality in Joliet in as many days.

The first occurred about 6:14 p.m.

Tuesday when William Brinkman, 54, was hit by a semi at Eastern Avenue and Jackson Street.

Joliet Police Deputy Chief Tab Jensen said the semi driver, a 39-year-old Hobart, Indiana, man, was turning from northbound Eastern to eastbound Jackson when he felt a bump,

heard horns from other vehicles and stopped to find Brinkman in the roadway.

“Witnesses in another vehicle traveling eastbound on Jackson saw the victim fall head first into the street in front of the semi while it was turning,” Jensen said.

The truck driver was not cited for the incident.

Brinkman was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, where he was pronounced dead at 6:44 p.m., according to Will County Coroner Patrick K. O’Neil. Police reports indicate Brinkman was homeless.

At 9:20 p.m. Wednesday, a truck struck a man on westbound I-80 near the Wheeler Avenue overpass. Illinois State Police Sgt. Chris Wilkes said witnesses reported the man “was standing in the roadway when he was struck by the truck.”

Joliet Police deputy chief The Coroner’s Office pronounced him dead at the scene at 11:35 p.m. He was identified as Aaron A. Wiley, 25, of Joliet, after relatives reported him missing Thursday afternoon to Joliet police, O’Neil said.

Both men died from “multiple injuries from being struck by a semi-tractor,” O’Neil said. Authorities do not believe the incidents are related.

6-vehicle crash sparks fire in I-55 median

aschier@shawmedia.com Fire crews briefly closed Interstate 55 near Wilmington on Wednesday while responding to a six-vehicle crash that caused a grass fire on a roadway median.

The incident occurred about 12:15 p.m. on I-55 near River Road, according to Wilmington Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Todd Friddle.

No one was injured in the crash, he said, and the involved vehicles sustained only minor to moderate damage, but the incident did spark a grass fire on a nearby median.

First responders closed all the northbound lanes of the interstate until the blaze was extinguished, which took about five minutes, according to Friddle.

The fire agency remained on scene about an hour.

Joliet murder trial testimony: Broken ribs led to man’s death

Dr. Mitra Kalelkar testified Thursday Meredith died as a result of multiple blunt-force injuries.

An autopsy showed Meredith had four ribs fractured on one side of his back and three on the other.

“The bruising is consistent with being punched,” Kalelkar told jurors and Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak. She said other marks on Meredith’s body were made by a flat strip like a wooden slat.

“The broken ribs in the back led to pulmonary distress ... you would go into respiratory failure and then the heart is not getting enough oxygen,” she said.

Hospital staff initially believed Meredith had died from a heart attack before finding the bruises and notifying police.

Meredith also had one front rib fracture, but Kalelkar believed that could’ve occurred from a chest compression. According to testimony, Zabala was performing CPR on the victim when paramedics arrived.

fense attorney Chuck Bretz, Kalelkar acknowledged lab results showed Meredith had a “toxic, but not fatal” level of medication in his system when he died.

“And the toxic level of the drug would’ve made him more susceptible to the type of injuries he sustained?”

Bretz asked.

“That’s correct,” Kalelkar answered. “It was a significant contributory factor. But it still doesn’t take away the fact that he was beaten severely.”

The prosecution rested its case Thursday and the trial will resume Monday.

Minooka teacher, coach dies after battle with cancer Services

Shaw Media correspondent Pastor Nate Ferguson of Village Christian Church in Minooka said when he spoke of the story in the Bible of the man who built his house upon a rock and, when the rains came, the house stood strong, the story was reminiscent of his members Mark and Jess Smith.

The passage from Matthew 7:24-25 in the Bible reads, “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against the house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.”

On Wednesday, Mark Smith of Channahon took his last breath at Joliet Area Community Hospice at the age of 29.

His mother, Christi Smith, said Mark had experienced intense headaches in February of 2016, sought medical care where a [thought-to-be] benign tumor was found on his brain.

After several procedures to relieve pressure, he was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer in May. In June, Mark was moved to Our

He was always clowning around, and when he got older he was a talented athlete. He didn’t know what he wanted to do in college, but after he helped as a camp counselor at Channahon Park District, he realized he loved kids,” Christi said.

Jess said she likes to be in control and be prepared, saying God prepared her and Mark for this moment five years ago when they went back to the church.

“If I would have known in August, when I found out I was pregnant with Livia, that Mark would be going to heaven but go through hell for nine months first, I wouldn’t have been able to do it,” Jess said. “God shielded us because there is no preparation for something like this.”

took life as a role model seriously, Christi said of her son.

“He didn’t approach anything without love. He made people feel important. He was at a banquet for 150 kids and he had something to say to each one of them. He lived a huge, full, loving life at such a young age,” she said.

“Some of us may live to 90 and never live that full of a life.”

The communities of Minooka and Channahon, where Mark grew up and taught, rallied around the family in a big way. MCHS head boys track and field coach Nick Lundin, along with his wife and coworkers, ordered apparel with the #SmithStrong logo to sell, to get the ball rolling.

A #SmithStrong website and Facebook page were created, as business owners and members of the community hosted bowling, restaurant, yoga, haircut, run/walk and basketball fundraisers. A benefit was hosted at Joliet Area Historical Museum, while kids sold lemonade on street corners, baseball teams took collections at grocery stores and even a car was raffled.

“The countless number of people that came out to help the family was incredible. All of these people were spokes to the wheel of the community,” Lundin said.

Crest Hill approves TIF study agreement with firm ings in those locations are well over 30 years old, making the area a good option for a potential TIF district.

City officials began discussing in the summer the possibility of bringing TIF districts to Crest Hill, McMaster said.

Camiros is expected to present its findings in early 2017 about the potential for a Hillcrest TIF district, but McMaster said it is too early in the process to address specific tax base regulations or geographic borders of a future TIF area.

Camiros was selected for the work after a consultant that city officials work with recommended the firm, which will receive about $33,000 from Crest Hill in the agreement. McMaster said the city did not bid out the TIF evaluation work, as officials found Camiros’ pricing to be competitive.

City officials also are considering the Broadway Street corridor from Theodore Street north to the railroad viaduct as a possible TIF district, but Camiros is not evaluating that option as part of the agreement approved Monday.

Also at its meeting, the council unanimously approved the closure of the City Hall parking lot and Knapp Drive for the city’s first winter festival.

The event, which will be from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 26, will include a tree-lighting ceremony, holiday music performances and live reindeer. Santa will be in attendance. McMaster said he hopes to see the festival become an annual event.

CREST HILL – Aspiring archers can no longer shoot a bow and arrow within the city limits of Crest Hill unless they are on a licensed range, after the City Council unanimously approved an ordinance at a meeting earlier this week prohibiting the practice.

A city ordinance already banned the discharge of firearms and BB guns, Interim Police Chief Ed Clark said, but it now includes bows and arrows, crossbows and similar weapons.

“They can injure and kill people,” Clark said.

The catalyst for the change was an incident a few months ago in which a person was recreationally shooting a bow and arrow in a residential area near children, Clark said.

No one was injured, and police weren’t called to the scene, but the situation was later reported to law enforcement.

The recent incident wasn’t the first case involving archery equipment that Crest Hill police have seen, Clark said.

“We’ve had issues throughout the years,” he said.

Clark specified that the ordinance doesn’t apply in the case of a licensed archery range.

CREST HILL – Crest Hill is moving forward with its interest in establishing tax increment financing districts in the city.

The City Council voted unanimously at its meeting earlier this week to approve an agreement with Camiros, a Chicago-based planning and economic development firm, to evaluate the viability of establishing a TIF district in the area surrounding the Hillcrest Shopping Center.

“It is something new to the city of Crest Hill,” Mayor Ray Soliman said Thursday of the city’s pursuit of a TIF district.

A TIF district is a blighted area in which any increase in tax base value from development is returned to the district to generate more improvements.

Scott McMaster, the city’s economic development and zoning manager, said Thursday the goal of bringing one or more TIF districts to the city would be to make Crest Hill more marketable and competitive in terms of attracting development.

“There’s a lot of redevelopment that needs to happen in the city,” he said.

The area that Camiros will assess as a possible TIF district would include Route 30’s intersections with Larkin Avenue and Theodore Street.

Boil order issued for area in New Lenox

NEW LENOX – A boil order has been issued for all residents and businesses located south of Talon Drive and east of Schoolhouse Road in New Lenox.

A water main break occurred Thursday afternoon on Schoolhouse Road, according to a statement on the village’s website, and as a result, water service was interrupted for all residents and businesses south of Talon Drive and east of Schoolhouse

Road. Repairs are now complete, but people in that area who experienced a service outage should boil water at least five minutes before drinking it or using it in cooking.

The boil order will remain in effect until lab samplings confirm that water quality has been restored.

The confirmation is expected to occur by Saturday afternoon at the earliest.

NEW LENOX – Thanksgiving Day is the leading holiday for home fires involving cooking equipment, according to a news release from the New Lenox Fire Protection District.

The district wants area residents to keep the holiday season fire free by following the cooking safety guidelines listed below: • Do not use the oven or stovetop if you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol.

• Stay in the kitchen while frying, grilling or boiling food. Turn off the stove if you leave the kitchen, even for a short period of time.

• If you are simmering, baking, roasting or boiling food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind

you that you are cooking.

• Keep anything that can catch fire – oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains – away from the stovetop.

• If a small grease fire starts in a pan, smother the flames by carefully sliding a lid over the pan. Turn off the burner. Do not move the pan. Leave the lid on until the pan is completely cool. Never throw water into a grease fire.

• In the case of an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed.

Outdoor gas-fueled turkey fryers also can pose a huge risk of injury and fires this time of year, the news release stated. The risk of oil being spilled is significant, and related injuries and fires can be severe. People should use oil-free models or refrain from using fryers altogether.

MILAN – Umberto Veronesi, an Italian oncologist, former health minister and senator widely respected for his work on preventing and treating breast cancer, has died, his foundation said. He was 90.

Veronesi’s eponymous foundation

announced his death late Tuesday, saying his final message was one of encouragement “to continue, because the world needs science and reason.”

Veronesi was internationally recognized as one of the fathers of cancer research. He advocated conservative treatment of breast cancer and his research over three decades is credited

with helping hundreds of thousands of women each year to receive curative surgery, preserving the breast.

His work on cancer research led him to vegetarianism and fasting, subjects of several books he wrote.

He also promoted a conservative approach to treating melanoma, adopted by the World Health Organization.

Edmonds said that before the age of cellphones and laptop computers, a large portion of a wire photographer’s job was just finding a way to transmit an image quickly. He said Marquette would plan way ahead on a story and arrange to use phone lines in people’s homes if need be, allowing him to send his photos while competitors still were scrambling.

WASHINGTON – Joe Marquette, a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer who covered Olympics, Super Bowls and the White House during a five-decade career, has died at his home in Tulsa, Oklahoma, after a series of lengthy illnesses. He was 79.

Marquette was a large man with an outsized personality and someone fellow photographers sometimes referred to as “Condor,” the White House News Photographers Association said in announcing his death. Marquette spent a decade with The Associated Press and also worked for several other news organizations, including UPI, Reuters and the Philadelphia Inquirer.

In 1999, along with a team of other AP photographers, he won a Pulitzer in the category of feature photography for coverage of the impeachment of President Bill Clinton.

Marquette’s career gave him a front seat to some of the most important events of the 20th and 21st centuries.

He initially covered sports but eventually moved to politics.

Space launches, the Olympics and Super Bowl games were among his specialties. His 1984 Super Bowl picture of John Riggins scoring the winning touchdown for the Washington Redskins became a popular poster that hung in offices and restaurants all over the Washington area. His photo

Schock indicted on wire fraud, theft counts

PEORIA – An Illinois congressman who resigned amid scrutiny of lavish spending – including a “Downton Abbey”-style redecorating of his Capitol Hill office – was charged Thursday in a wide-ranging federal indictment that alleges he schemed to profit personally from his government job.

The 52-page indictment accuses the once-rising Republican star of brazen efforts to make money, such as buying World Series tickets with campaign funds and reselling them at a profit. When Schock risked missing a connecting flight for a European vacation, the indictment alleges, he paid a private aircraft company more than $8,000 out of his campaign account to fly him from Peoria to Washington.

Schock spent $40,000 in government funds to redecorate his Washington office, including $5,000 on a chandelier, and asked the House to reimburse him for nearly $30,000 worth of camera equipment, prosecutors allege. The indictment said he ran up a $140,000 mileage tab over six years, reimburse-

CHICAGO – Chicago police said they arrested five people as protesters expressed their disapproval of the election of Donald Trump as the nation’s 45th president.

Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in an email that an estimated 1,800 to 2,000 people protested Wednesday. Among those taken into custody were two men for obstructing traffic, two men for reckless conduct and trespassing, and a boy for trespassing and resisting arrest.

Overall, Guglielmi said there were “no major incidents.”

Rauner asks for meeting before veto session

SPRINGFIELD – Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner has asked the top leaders in the Illinois General Assembly to meet ahead of the veto session next week.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Rauner’s office confirms that he sent the request Thursday, asking the leaders to meet in Chicago or Springfield. The veto session starts Tuesday.

The leaders include Democratic Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan and Illinois House Republican leader Jim Durkin.

Democrat John Cullerton is president of the Illinois Senate and the Republican Illinois Senate leader is Christine Radogno.

Radogno said a meeting is the “prime opportunity” to discuss “comprehensive solutions.”

State legislators head into the veto session with hopes of coming to an agreement on a full state budget and pension reform. The state is operating on a temporary budget approved in July.

FBI, troopers raid offices of Lake County, Ind., sheriff

CROWN POINT, Ind. – The FBI and Indiana State Police raided the offices of Lake County Sheriff John Buncich and seized boxes of documents Thursday, although the target of their investigation remained unclear.

The investigators entered the offices of the Lake County Government Center about 9:30 a.m. and left several hours later. Their cars also were parked Thursday morning outside Buncich’s home in Crown Point, Indiana. FBI Special Agent Bob Ramsey, who appeared outside the sheriff’s home, declined to comment.

Ryan Holmes, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office, said federal authorities were serving search warrants on the sheriff but declined to comment on the nature of the investigation.

Dean Delisle told The Northwest Indiana Times he was seeking a copy of an accident report in an office where police records are kept when investigators entered and ordered everybody including employees to leave the building. He said investigators then began “taking pictures of everything.”

The department is cooperating with

20-year prison sentence. His arraignment is set for Nov. 21.

“Mr. Schock held public office at the time of the alleged offenses, but public office does not exempt him or anyone else from accountability for alleged intentional misuse of public funds and campaign funds,” the U.S. attorney in Springfield, Jim Lewis, said in a statement announcing the indictment.

After the charges were announced, Schock’s attorney, George Terwilliger, contended in a phone interview that many of the issues singled out in the indictment were administrative ones that many members of Congress grapple with.

“It’s baffling to me that the government would think that it’s a proper exercise of discretion to make criminal mountains out of these molehill issues,” he said. “It was evident to us from the first day they subpoenaed him that they had every intent to embarrass and humiliate him.”

Terwilliger said in an earlier written statement that “these charges are the culmination of an effort to find something, anything, to take down Aaron Schock.”

Police: Ex.-state Rep. paid $3K to extortionists

CHICAGO – Information released after an appeal by The Associated Press shows that a former top House Republican wired $3,000 to an extortionist in the Philippines before alerting police in July.

Ex-Rep. Ron Sandack of Downers Grove acknowledged in September that he had an “inappropriate” Skype video conversation with a woman who contacted him on Facebook.

The conversation’s content remains secret but Downers Grove police revealed Thursday that Sandack answered extortion demands of $1,000, then $2,000 over the next two days. He alerted police after receiving a $5,000 demand.

Police disclosed the information after the state attorney general agreed with appeals from The AP and other news media that more of the still-heavily redacted report should be disclosed under the Freedom of Information Act. Sandack resigned in July. He did not comment Thursday.

CANONSBURG, Pa. – A gunman with a history of domestic abuse fatally shot a police officer and wounded another Thursday before he and a woman were found dead after a fight at their apartment, authorities said.

Officer Scott Bashioum and the other officer were responding separately to an emergency call from neighbors about 3:15 a.m. when they were “ambushed upon their arrival” and immediately shot, state police Trooper Melinda Bondarenka said. The officers had arrived almost simultaneously, although authorities said other details of the initial confrontation were unclear.

Bashioum, a father of four, died less than an hour later at a hospital, a coroner said. The 52-year-old had been on the police force for seven years.

The wounded officer, whose name was not released, was hospitalized in Pittsburgh in stable condition after surgery.

Defense open to settlement in Trump University suit SAN DIEGO – Donald Trump’s attorney told a federal judge Thursday he’s open to settlement talks in a class-action fraud lawsuit involving the president-elect and his now-defunct Trump University.

Attorney Daniel Petrocelli also asked during a hearing that the trial be delayed until early next year because Trump needs time to work on the transition to the presidency. The lawsuit alleging Trump University failed on its promise to teach success in real estate is currently set to begin Nov. 28 in San Diego.

President-elect Trump tours nation’s capital

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – President-elect Donald Trump took a triumphant tour of the nation’s capital Thursday, holding a cordial White House meeting with President Barack Obama, sketching out priorities with Republican congressional leaders and taking in the majestic view from where he’ll be sworn in to office.

Trump’s meeting with Obama spanned 90 minutes, longer than originally scheduled. Obama said he was “encouraged” by Trump’s willingness to work with his team during the transition of power, and the Republican called the president a “very good man.”

“I very much look forward to dealing with the president in the future, including his counsel,” Trump said from the Oval Office. He’ll begin occupying the office Jan. 20.

While Trump noted that he and Obama had never met before, their political histories will forever be linked. Trump spent years perpetrating the lie that Obama was born outside the United States. The president campaigned aggressively against Trump during the 2016 campaign, warning that his election would put the republic at risk.

But at least publicly, the two men appeared to put aside their animosity. As the meeting concluded and journalists scrambled out of the Oval Office, Obama smiled at his successor and explained the unfolding scene.

“We now are going to want to do everything we can to help you succeed because if you succeed the country succeeds,” Obama said.

Kentucky to discuss the GOP legislative agenda. Ryan, who holds the most powerful post in Congress, was a sometime critic of Trump and never campaigned with the nominee.

Emerging from the meetings, Trump sketched out priorities for his presidency.

“We’re going to move very strongly on immigration,” he said. “We will move very strongly on health care. And we’re looking at jobs. Big league jobs.”

Ryan took Trump on a tour of the Speaker’s Balcony overlooking the National Mall, the scene of Trump’s upcoming inauguration. The view, Trump said, was “really, really beautiful.”

Trump also was beginning the process of putting together his White House team. Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, who worked his way into Trump’s inner circle during the election, and top campaign official Kellyanne Conway were emerging as possible picks for White House chief of staff, according to two people familiar with the transition planning.

A third person said conservative media executive Steve Bannon was also in the mix, though others insisted Bannon would not have a White House

role. Those involved in the process insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the planning publicly. A decision on chief of staff is expected in the coming days.

First lady Michelle Obama met privately in the White House residence with Trump’s wife, Melania, while Vice President Joe Biden saw Vice President-elect Mike Pence late Thursday. Trump’s team was said to be sketching a robust role for Pence, an experienced Washington hand, that would include both domestic and foreign policy responsibilities.

Obama and Trump met alone, with no staff present, White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters after the discussion.

“The two men did not relitigate their differences in the Oval Office,” Earnest said.

“We’re onto the next phase.”

Trump traveled to Washington from New York on his private jet, breaking with protocol by not bringing journalists in his motorcade or on his plane to document his historic visit to the White House.

Trump was harshly critical of the media during his campaign and for a time banned news organizations whose coverage he disliked from his events.

It’s been like this since the beginning.

When George Washington chose not to seek a third term, it was a fairly unique occurrence. No one simply walked away. But America was different. We had elections. The losers respected the outcome. The winners respected the outcome.

One of the primary reasons we’ve been able to maintain that tradition for more than two centuries is because the U.S. is home to the greatest military in the world.

Without the sacrifices made by our military veterans and active-duty armed forces, such a peaceful transfer of power might not be possible.

Today is Veterans Day, a day set aside every year to honor and thank veterans from all branches of the military.

Flags will fly. Ceremonies will be held. Speeches will be given. Veterans will be thanked for their service.

Our veterans deserve this day and so much more for the sacrifices they made so we can continue to decide for ourselves who our leaders will be.

Sadly, we have failed our veterans in many ways. We can do better providing health care, including mental health care. We can do better in providing transitional services and job training.

One of Trump’s campaign promises was that he would make sure the country does do a better job taking care of its veterans. We hope he follows through on that promise, because they deserve better.

To all who serve, all who ever have served, and the hundreds of thousands who lost their lives after dedicating them to the greater good, we thank you.

Just as your example of toil and service to your country endures for months, years or even lifelong careers, please know our gratitude extends well beyond this special day.

It’s time to pull together The most divisive presidential election in modern U.S. history is behind us, but not even the most cheerful Pollyanna believes the fractures have healed.

In a historic election where the political establishment, the media and pollsters underestimated both the mood and the will of the American people, the voters have spoken in electing Donald Trump as our next president.

That news brings joy to nearly half the country and despair to nearly the other half, but it is clear that many in many states wanted drastic change from the status quo that permeated Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

What also was grossly underestimated is that many citizens, in the South, in Rust Belt states and others across the country, are economically hurting. That pain spans decades and several presidential administrations as

globalization has changed the face of manufacturing.

That economic trend is a complex one and it’s difficult to envision how one U.S. president would be able to reverse it as Trump has promised to do.

Americans want good jobs and rightfully so. They believe trade deals and immigration policies have put them at a disadvantage, and Trump’s messages on those points were perhaps his most persuasive ones.

Frankly, it’s unclear what kind of president Trump will be.

We’re not sure he knows, but we trust that he understands that running this great nation is far more consequential than running a real estate empire or hosting a reality TV show. He did show some grace and humility in his speech early Wednesday morning, qualities which were virtually absent during his campaign.

What this election is not is a

victory for bigots, misogynists and racists. This country is too diverse and will never tolerate the kind of behavior displayed by some at Trump campaign rallies. These were shameful moments. It is immoral to call them anything else.

We’ve not heard much that is hopeful from this campaign, and Trump has displayed a woeful ignorance of foreign policy. His lifetime of narcissistic behavior and demonstrating little more than seeking gain for his personal interests has been troubling.

We are hopeful that he brings in capable leaders and that a still-Republican-controlled Congress keeps him in check.

This United States is and will always be greater than any one individual.

And while it may take some time, we hope this nation, which was, is and will remain great, can pull together for the greater good.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

MINOOKA – Going into the season, Minooka’s girls volleyball team aimed to make history.

It happened. For the first time, Minooka will step onto the Redbird Arena court and play in a state semifinal match.

The Indians accomplished their goal, but now they have a new one.

“Our expectation is to win state,” junior outside hitter Alli Papesh said.

“We had a goal to make it to state. Now that we achieved it, we are focused on winning Friday and carrying that momentum into Saturday. We want to bring the first-ever state championship trophy to Minooka.”

The biggest key of getting the chance to achieve that goal is by performing well in the Class 4A semifinal match against Stevenson (32-7) at 7 p.m. Throughout the season, Minooka has lived by the phrase, ‘One game at a time.’

Nothing has changed.

Minooka has to stop Stevenson’s Jori Radtke to succeed in the semis.

Radtke has 527 kills, which is almost twice as many as its next leading hitter.

Stopping an outside hitter is a task that Indians libero Taylor Baranski is good at. With her 551 digs, she has more than twice as many as any Stevenson player. It also gives her pin hitters – Papesh, Rocky Perinar and Holly Bonde – chances to put the ball away.

Middles Olivia Klank and Sammi Hermann also block better than the Stevenson middles, so on defense, Minooka is more dominant. The Indians have to play to that advantage.

McAuley should come away with a ‘W’ since it has made a name for itself as a dominant program. It is one of the teams that is always mentioned when people talk about Illinois high school volleyball.

This weekend, the Indians want to prove that names don’t matter to them.

It’s all about believing in their talent and making their program a top dog for the first time.

“Teams might underestimate us because we have never been on the board,” Minooka coach Carrie Prosek said. “I have played and coached in the area and the teams have stayed the same: Mother McAuley, Joliet Catholic, Benet, Wheaton St. Francis, Normal Community.

You know those names as powerhouses.

“Making it to state is a huge stepping stone for our program. We have always played competitive volleyball, but it was getting over that hump to make it to state. Now we have to believe.”

Senior setter Brooklyn Bachmann has been on this stage before in the 3-point competition in basketball and with cross country. She plans on being strong for her team this weekend, since she has been a leader for the Indians this entire year.

Minooka is overall young in age.

The girls are not young varsity players, however. Papesh has been a three-year starter while Bachmann, Perinar and Bonde all started last year.

The players know that they’re going to get nervous. That happens to all teams when they make it to that stage.

“To make it to state, you have to be very good,” Bachmann said. “All four

teams are, and we have to remind ourselves that we are just as talented. We have to have each other’s backs and play for each other. When good teams get down and don’t, that’s when strong teams fall early. If we get in trouble, we have to play for the girl next to us.

That’s when we play our best, when we play for each other.”

The Indians have one last thing on their side. This past week, Minooka teacher and coach Mark Smith died

after battling cancer. The girls wrote on a volleyball “Minooka Smith Strong.” The game is no longer just for them. It’s for their school and community.

“We are going into state playing for each other,” Papesh said. “It is something that we have been doing all year, but now we are also going in playing for Mr. Smith. He is inspiration to every member of our school and especially to our team. This is something that we really want to do for him.”

Smith went for 154 yards in all, including a 63-yard touchdown run on the Vikings’ first play from scrimmage. Among St. Laurence’s three losses is a 63-49 decision to IC Catholic, a Class 3A heavyweight, in Week 2. Lemont is continuing its tradition of being a difficult team to oust from the playoffs. The Indians have played well defensively most of the season, and the Spencer Nagel-led offense has been productive. Nagel has completed 105 of 182 passes (57.6 percent) for 1,837 yards

and 25 touchdowns.

The pick: Lemont CLASS 5A METAMORA AT MORRIS Kickoff: 3 p.m. Saturday Records: Metamora (8-3), Morris (9-2) Playoff history: Metamora is in for the 32nd time and is 64-28 in playoffs games with three state championships and seven runner-up finishes. Morris is in for the 32nd time, first since 2014, and is 69-28, also with three titles and seven runner-up finishes.

2016 playoffs: Metamora beat Kankakee, 14-6, and Highland, 28-7. Morris beat Marion, 48-28, and Troy Triad, 14-7.

Semifinals: Morris would host Washington (9-2) or Peoria (10-1).

The skinny: Not unlike what Lincoln-Way East has done with Jake Arthur and Max Shafer at quarterback, Metamora uses senior Jon Brunton and sophomore Tommy Hall.

Brunton is more of a runner, which fits well with the Redbirds’ style of offense, while Hall brings more of a passing threat. Morris has been solid defensively most of the season and should help make this a relatively low-scoring game. The Redskins always are difficult to beat at home. Offensively, they feature Michael Feeney, who has rushed for 1,1196 yards and is averaging 8.7 a carry. The teams have a common opponent in Washington, which could be the semifinal opponent for the winner next week. Morris beat Washington, 20-3, in Week 2, and Metamora edged the Panthers, 14-7, in Week 4.

WILMINGTON AT IC CATHOLIC Kickoff: 5 p.m. Saturday at Plunkett Athletic Field in Elmhurst Records: Wilmington (11-0), IC Catholic (11-0) Playoff history: Wilmington is in for the 24th time, 21st in succession, and is 34-22 in playoff games with a state championship and a runner-up finish. IC Catholic is in for the 18th time, second in succession, and is 22-15 with two titles.

2016 playoffs: Wilmington beat Corliss, 51-8, and Byron, 38-18. IC Catholic beat St. Joseph-Ogden, 49-8, and Paxton-Buckley-Loda, 65-0.

Semifinals: Wilmington would travel to Farmington (11-0) or host Monticello (11-0).

The skinny: The Wilmington camp knew from the time the north bracket of Class 3A was unveiled that there would be no state championship without getting past IC Catholic.

The Knights have been the No. 1-ranked team in Class 3A most of the season. In Week 2, they knocked off St. Laurence, 63-49, and the Vikings are a quarterfinalist in Class 6A. The Knights average 52.9 points and allow 6.7, with St. Laurence posting all but 25 of the points IC has allowed. Knights running back Jordan Rowell has rushed for 170 yards and scored six touchdowns in 10 carries in the postseason.

Quarterback Luke Ricobene is adept at the short passing game. The teams have a common opponent in St. Joseph-Ogden, which Wilmington beat, 48-12, in Week 1. St. Joe-Ogden led in time of possession in the 49-8 first-round playoff loss to IC, and the Wildcats, behind running back Owen Weaver and a strong offensive line, hope to gain that same advantage.

Plainfield North is in for the sixth time, third in succession, and is 2-5.

2016 playoffs: Auburn beat St. Rita, 22-21, and St. Charles North, 27-21. Plainfield North beat Highland Park, 42-0, and Bradley, 49-20.

Auburn has won nine straight, but the past three by an average of only four points. Kasper: Only Cubs poised to be a dynasty

dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Since Mark Grant became the master of ceremonies for the annual Joliet Catholic Academy Hilltopper Banquet a few years ago, his chore has included doing a little homework on the guest speaker.

Sure, he knew about sports figures such as Paul Azinger, Eddie Olczyk and Mike Ditka, but they were not personal acquaintances before the night of the event.

Regardless of his relative unfamiliarity, though, the personable Grant, who always is up for a good laugh, made the banquets work for the audience in the JCA Student Activity Center.

This year’s event – held Thursday night – was a little different.

Grant, a 1981 Joliet Catholic graduate who went on to pitch in the major leagues for several years, is the color commentator for Padres TV in San Diego. He and Cubs television play-by-play man Len Kasper have been friends working in the same business for a better part of 20 years.

Their conversation flowed smoothly as they sat at the table in the center of the stage and went back and forth talking baseball. With Grant a die-hard Cubs’ fan growing up, and Kasper having been with the Cubs since 2005 and, of course, throughout this world championship season, it was a memorable night of baseball banter.

“Mark Grant is one of my best friends in the world,” Kasper said before it began. “Especially when you’re doing local games, you have to have fun with it. Mark does that.

My partner, Jim Deshaies, being a left-handed pitcher, he has a quirky sense of humor. We have a lot of fun together.”

He expressed similar sentiments for the Cubs’ radio color commentator, Lockport graduate Ron Coomer.

“Ron is the best teammate ever,” Kasper said. “We’re partners, sitting together on the planes. When there was a change a couple years ago, he called me and said, ‘You and I are together now.’ He is a terrific broadcaster and human being.”

Kasper said the feeling he gets is that Cubs’ fans still are basking in the glow of winning the World Series, as well they should be. They are not ready to look ahead to next year quite yet.

“The chance to repeat will be there for a long time to come,” he said. “But

The only thing close to a dynasty in baseball in recent years is the Giants winning every other year for a while.

“If there is a team out there poised for a dynasty, though, it is the Cubs.

It will be very tough for the starting rotation to be better than it was this year, but the offense and defense could be even better as all the young kids mature.”

With the World Series games not on local TV, Kasper worked with Coomer and Pat Hughes in the Cubs’ radio booth. One of his jobs was to get to the clubhouse late in the game and get ready to grab a player of the game for an interview.

“In Game 7, I got down to the clubhouse in the bottom of the seventh inning with the Cubs leading 6-3,” he said. “The work crew was down

there wheeling the scaffolding into the Cubs’ locker room for the trophy presentation, and they’re bringing in racks of T-shirts and raincoats.

“That’s all happening, and then I’m hearing the reaction of the crowd before what happened shows on the monitor we’re watching. ‘Oh, my God, he [Rajai Davis] hit a home run.’ The game is tied in the bottom of the eighth. So they say, ‘OK, let’s go get all this stuff to the Cleveland clubhouse. That’s the moment when I said, ‘uh, oh.’ And then there was the rain delay.

“It was almost appropriate that Cubs’ fans would have to go through the ringer like that.”

Kasper, though, said the Cubs had the best team this season, and even during the “uh, oh’” moment, there was no reason to lose faith.

He used Kris Bryant as an example.

“Kris Bryant was raised right,” he said. “He is a respectful, courteous young man. He also may be the best baserunner in the league. When he scored from third when Davis caught the short fly ball flat-footed, when he scored from first on Anthony Rizzo’s hit, those are the types of things that separate this Cubs team from good Cubs teams of the past. What bad moments there are, they’re the exception.

“You know how it was always wait until next year? Well, the Cubs are telling the rest of the league, you wait until next year.”

The fun has just begun.

“They play a fast-paced game, a lot of shots, which is good, and also, the type of education program they have is good for me,” he said.

DiForti said Millsaps allowed him 10 minutes to talk to the crowd about his proteges. He made no promises about being able to finish that quickly.

“They came to us as little scrawny freshmen,” DiForti said of Kirk and Bell. “That was my first year here, too, so we came in together.

“We knew they had talent, but they had to get stronger and maintain their grades, and they have upheld their end of the bargain.”

DiForti then mentioned an interesting tidbit.

“Did you that we are the only school in Illinois with two Division I players signing early?” he said. “Between the two of them, they had 20plus offers. But these two knew what they wanted.”

Bell, who will be a teammate of Lemont senior guard PJ Pipes at Green Bay, entered West as a tall kid, thus a kid who had been playing center in junior high.

“We came to the realization early that he was not going to play there,” DiForti said. “We knew if we could get him experience on the perimeter, that would help his game rise to the next level. It was a great decision for him to go to Wisconsin-Green Bay.” As for Kirk, the coach said, “If there is one kid who earned a Division I scholarship, it’s him. He wasn’t always a D-I player.

“He had that goal in his mind, he improved every year and he worked

very hard to get where he is. That’s a work ethic that not many adults have.

“So, that’s two different routes to becoming D-I players. They are two role models, and they have fantastic opportunities ahead of them.

“They are going to make Joliet very proud.”

That’s what they plan to do, beginning with their senior season at West, which begins Nov. 21 when the Joliet West Thanksgiving Tournament tips off.

JOLIET – Joliet West boys basketball coach Nick DiForti walked up behind his teary-eyed senior point guard, Teyvion Kirk, put his hand on his shoulder and told the audience, “I’ve never seen Teyvion speechless before, and we never will again.”

Kirk and his senior teammate, wing Trevian Bell, were the centers of attention Wednesday night as Joliet West conducted its national letter-of-intent signing ceremony in the school gym. Kirk signed with Drake and Bell with Wisconsin-Green Bay, both NCAA Division I programs.

Kirk is a vocal leader for a Tigers team that might be a contender for a state championship come March. In fact, athletic director Steve Millsaps made reference to the big celebration he is thinking about for March 19, the day after the state tournament ends.

Often when a team is loaded with potential, team leaders shy away from talking about such lofty goals as a state title. Not so with these Tigers.

“We’re trying to move Joliet up in people’s eyes,” Bell said. “We feel we can be a factor in the state tournament. This is something we have been thinking about since freshman year.

“We’ll be ranked highly, which is great. The way last year ended, the [supersectional] loss to Benet, that just helps put the biggest chip on our shoulders that you can think of.”

“There are a lot of expectations for us,” Kirk said. “We know there is a target on our backs. But our team is hungry. We don’t care who we play when. We just have to go out and play hard every minute, and we feel we will be fine.”

The signing ceremony had ended a few minutes earlier, with the climax being Bell and Kirk giving their talks, their thank-yous. That’s when Kirk choked up.

“I started thinking about my family, how much everyone here has helped me, and it was hard for me to get through it,” he said, adding that when he visited Drake, it felt like home, a place he wants to be.

Bell called Wednesday “one of the biggest days of our lives. Ever since junior high, I’ve been dreaming about playing college basketball for free.”

Bell was impressed by how often Wisconsin-Green Bay coaches attended last season’s high school games and his summer games. Some-

Morris relying on defense

roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – There were some eye-popping scores around the state in the second round of the football playoffs.

For example, in Class 2A, Deer Creek-Mackinaw beat Chicago Hope, 91-70, and, in Class 5A, Peoria ran past Danville, 96-40. All told, 31 of the 144 teams that played in last weekend’s second round scored 40 points or more.

But, as has almost always been the case, the teams that play defense on a consistent basis are the ones that tend to move on, especially as the rounds get later, the weather gets colder and the competition gets tougher.

In that regard, Morris coach Alan Thorson, whose team will play Metamora at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Class 5A quarterfinals, said his team has as good a chance as any.

That’s because, although the Redskins possess an offense that has churned out nearly 300 rushing yards a game throughout the year, the team has been able to hang its hat on its defense. Morris has allowed only 143 points through 11 games, an average of 13 a game.

Defensive coordinator John Courter has done a masterful job of rotating his players in and out of the right spots, and it all starts at the point of attack.

Defensive tackles Avery Hoffman and Alonzo Enriques routinely are able to disrupt the opposition’s blocking schemes, leaving linebackers such as Keagan Sobol, Kaden Laurie, Merrick Hairapetian and Kameron Dransfeldt free make tackles.

“Avery Hoffman has taken his game to another level,” Thorson said. “And Alonzo is right there with him. Avery had 12 tackles against Triad. I think Keagan had 18 and Laurie had 13, but they will be the first to tell you that they

couldn’t get that many if it weren’t for the guys in front of them either taking up blockers or plugging up holes.

“What makes Avery and Alonzo so good is that they have such a quick first step off the ball and they keep themselves low to the ground so they are hard to block. The defensive ends, Sean Grogan, Jared Akin and Jayson Podschweidt, also played very good games against Triad, and they have done well all year, too.”

The most points Morris has allowed in a game this season is 34, in a loss to DeKalb. That total was the third-lowest by the Barbs all season. The Redskins also held Northern Illinois Big 12 East rivals Sycamore, Kaneland and Yorkville to scores that were either the lowest or nearly lowest of their seasons.

In nonconference action, Morris shut out Chicago Austin and held Washington (3) and Quincy Notre Dame (7) to their lowest scores all year.

First-round playoff opponent Marion had scored 55 and 50 points in their two games prior to the playoffs before Morris limited it to 28, and Triad had seven games of 30 or more points before scoring only seven against the Redskins.

It’s not by accident.

“Offense and execution comes and goes,” Thorson said. “A lot of defense is about effort, and that never goes away.

One of the amazing things about our defense is their motor. They just keep coming at you. You get guys that are that hard to block and they keep coming and keep coming, it really wears on an offense and frustrates them.

“Every year, you look at the teams that win championships, and they have good defenses. The offense looks good and fans love points, but there are going to be games where your defense has to win it for you. Ours has been able to stand up and do that, and they take a lot of pride in that.”

and 5.8 yards per attempt.

Preparing for McCoy: More fortuitous timing for the Bears – getting Pro Bowl guards Kyle Long and Josh Sitton back when Pro Bowl defensive tackle Gerald McCoy is on the other side.

McCoy has four sacks, three tackles for loss, six QB hits, three passes defensed and two forced fumbles this season, and he’ll have the attention of Cutler on Sunday.

“I’m happy with the results,” Cutler said. “I’ve supported [Donald] Trump for a while. I’m not going to dive into it, I know it’s a sensitive issue, but I like where it’s going.”

Cutler is one of the more notable

NFL players to publicly voice support the president-elect. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who has discussed his friendship with Trump in the past and has had Trump’s hat in his locker, did not discuss the election this week with reporters in New England.

Other players in the Bears’ locker room discussed the election.

“With our system that’s in place, I think, and I’m hoping, that checks and balances and everything will work out the way it was drawn out to do,” guard Kyle Long said. “Hopefully, we can just kind of get together. That’s the big thing. Love one another.”

Inside linebacker Jerrell Freeman said, “Whoever is in that office, we’ve got to hope that they do great because they’re representing everybody here.”

LAKE FOREST – During the bye, a focal point of the Bears’ self scouting was the red-zone offense, where the team ranks 23rd in the league, scoring touchdowns on 47.8 percent of drives inside their opponents’ 20-yard line.

Sunday is a golden opportunity to start fixing that, taking advantage of the bye week and the opponent.

The Buccaneers have the 28thranked red-zone defense, giving up touchdowns on 65.5 percent of drives.

Offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains discussed how the Bears used the bye to improve the red-zone performance.

“Practice, No. 1. But you go back through and study what the teams around the league are doing, if there’s any trends that are going on and if there are trends, does it fit you?” he said. “Is there a play here or there you can steal? Really, you look hard at yourself, what you’ve been doing, why things haven’t worked, why things have worked. So it’s a good opportunity to get better that way.”

In last season’s win over the Bucs, the Bears were only 2 for 4 getting TDs in the red zone.

Talent in Bucs’ secondary: Tampa Bay’s pass defense doesn’t rank high, but it does feature a veteran in cornerback Brent Grimes, who has 12 passes defensed this season, and first-round pick Vernon Hargreaves, who has five.

Wade a winner again in Miami; Bulls top Heat

The Associated Press MIAMI – Dwyane Wade got a win in his return to Miami, with Jimmy Butler scoring 20 points and Rajon Rondo adding 16 points and 12 assists as the Bulls topped the Heat, 98-95, on Thursday night.

Robin Lopez had 16 points for the Bulls, who prevailed in a game that had 14 ties and 19 lead changes.

Wade scored 13 points on 5-for-17 shooting in his first game at Miami as an opponent after spending his first 13 NBA seasons with the Heat.

Hassan Whiteside led Miami with 20 points and 20 rebounds. Dion Waiters and Josh Richardson each scored 16 for the Heat, who lost point guard Goran Dragic to a sprained left ankle in the third quarter.

Justise Winslow scored 15 and Tyler Johnson added 14 for Miami.

Wade was feted throughout the night, getting warm ovations and a tribute video in his honor. And he got what he ultimately wanted most – a win, which he sealed with a pair of free throws after a foul call on Winslow that the Heat and their fans argued vehemently with 13.7 seconds left.

Richardson tied the game with a 3-pointer with 6:13 remaining, but the Bulls scored the next six points and led the rest of the way. After the game, Wade went over and greeted Heat managing general partner Micky Arison and general manager Andy Elisburg before leaving the floor and blowing a kiss to the fans who remained.

Amid all the drama surrounding Wade’s return, a basketball game broke out as well.

Miami came out flying and scored the game’s first eight points, the Bulls answered with a 12-4 run to tie the game, and the stage was set for a back-

and-forth sort of night. The Bulls’ lead was one after the first quarter, Miami tied it by halftime, and despite Wade’s best efforts it remained tied going into the fourth.

Wade tried a 3-pointer over Richardson in the final seconds of the third, and posed after letting it go – a sure sign that he thought it was good.

But it rimmed out, and it was 70-all headed into the final 12 minutes.

Tip-ins: Bulls: Wade had about two dozen friends and family at the game, and spent the last couple of minutes of halftime greeting Heat staff – with a big hug for coach Erik Spoelstra, and even high-fives for a couple of kids sitting near the court. ... Wade has made a career on his pump fake, which he taught to some Heat players – and Johnson burned him with it in the second half, drawing a smile from his mentor.

Heat: It was the third career 20-20 game for Whiteside. The only player to have more in a Heat uniform is Rony Seikaly, with 12. ... Winslow entered the game in a 10-for-43 slump over his last three games, then shot 6 for 11 on Thursday.

Good job: Rondo isn’t always the friendliest sort with opponents, but when he got a layup blocked by Whiteside with 5:20 left he offered the Heat center a congratulatory hand-slap.

The two even smiled at each other before heading in their respective directions.

No showdown: There was one thing Wade wanted that he didn’t get Thursday: He wanted to be on the floor with Udonis Haslem, his teammate on all three of the Heat championship teams.

“I want him to switch off on me one time,” Wade said. “Let me get 1-on-1 with UD, that’s what I’ve been waiting on. That right there would make my night.”

NEW YORK – Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez, who died in a boating accident in September, was voted the NL comeback player of the year by his peers in the annual Players Choice Awards of the Major League Baseball Players Association.

Fernandez was the 2013 NL Rookie of the Year, had Tommy John surgery the following year, returned in July 2015 and was 16-8 with a 2.86 ERA this season, earning his second All-Star selection.

He died at age 24 on Sept. 25, and autopsy reports released by the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner’s Office said he had cocaine and alcohol in his system when his boat crashed into a Miami Beach jetty.

Stone City VFW Post 2199 invites community to see memorabilia

JOLIET – Tucked into corners, spanning walls and flying overhead at Stone City Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2199 in Joliet are reminders of military service.

A “missing man table” unobtrusively sits behind the doors in the bar area. A Hall of Honor featuring photographs and biographies of veterans runs across the wall between the bar and banquet rooms.

“We keep getting more and more [photographs] every year as the word gets out,” said manager Terri Mutz.

“The veterans have done a lot for us.

This makes them feel good that we acknowledge them as heroes.”

This is the fourth year Mary Lou Chartrand of Shorewood has prepared the Hall of Honor, which typically goes up early in November and remains up through the month. Chartrand said she got the Hall of Honor idea from Sue Bustin, a member of the auxiliary at the American Legion Post 1080 in Joliet.

Along with photos, the Hall of Honor also includes the veterans’ name, rank, branch of military service and years they served, Chartrand said.

The Hall of Honor represents veterans from World War I to the present, she added.

Mary Lou’s husband, Ed Chartrand of Shorewood, summed up the reason for the wall.

“It’s to appreciate what the veterans have done,” Ed said.

Aside from the Wall of Honor, the bar has a number of photos on permanent display. One photo depicts Felix Pasteris, 95, of Joliet, from his service in the U.S. Air Force. When patrons realize they’re talking to a veteran whose likeness hangs nearby, they often bring out their cameras and ask Pasteris to pose near his photo, Mutz said.

“It’s pretty awesome – the look on his face and the joy he gets,” Mutz said.

The eventual goal is to show them in display cases. Only four of the 10 are protected in this way so far, Mutz said. The uniforms came from various sources.

“Some of the uniforms are from members still alive, some are from members already passed and some are from members’ relatives,” Mutz said.

About 35 recently donated model airplanes – most of them military – hang from the ceilings in the banquet rooms, as well as in the bar, because some people never see the banquet

rooms, Pasteris said.

“They go into the bar, have a few drinks and leave,” Pasteris said.

About another 15 planes, including a couple 7-foot planes, soon will join them, Bernie Kapinus of Morris, a member of Stone City Post, said.

“They’re not exact replicas, but they’re pretty close,” Kapinus said.

“I think it’s a good tribute to the veterans.”

Other noteworthy items at Stone City Post include a World War II helmet, a working World War II GPS and – outside – a World War II cannon and tank.

But perhaps the item Pasteris most wishes to show off is a manne-

quin wearing the uniform of Dominic Carugati of Joliet. Carugati served in France during World War I and became a charter member of Stone City Post. Carugati died in 1967.

According to Pasteris, Carugati’s family – Nate, Roy, Mary Jo and Don Fazio – donated the uniform to Stone City Post. Pasteris would like more donations from other veterans and their families – whether or not they have a connection to Stone City Post – because the community need to see the memorabilia and learn the stories behind them.

“To me, it’s living history,” Pasteris said.

A&E BRIEFS Plainfield Junior Women’s Club to host chili cook-off for scholarship program

PLAINFIELD – Come out for a day of fun, food and football at the PJWC Chili Cook-Off, hosted by the Plainfield Junior Women’s Club.

Attendees can sample chili made by local heroes, including policemen, firemen and school principals, as well as our members. Fun also includes the Bears game, raffles and door prizes, a wine pull and voting to declare the 2016 Chili Cook-Off Winner.

The event will be from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Skooters Roadhouse, 700 W. Jefferson St. in Shorewood. Tickets are $20 in advance from a member, $22 by PayPal on the PJWC website and $25 at the door.

Ticket includes chili tasting and snacks.

Cash bar and drink specials will be available. All ticket sales, raffles and any other items for purchase will be cash or check only on the day of the event.

SAL Squadron 1080 in Joliet held a pig roast fundraiser on Oct. 9 JOLIET – The Sons of the American Legion Squadron 1080 held a pig roast fundraiser Oct. 9 at American Legion Post 1080, 2625 Ingalls Ave. in Joliet.

The goal was to donate all net revenue to the Will County Veterans Assistance

Commission to help homeless veterans.

The event was a success with members from the SAL, American Legion Post 1080 and the Women’s Auxiliary donating time and talent.

Tezak Funeral Home donated bands The Frigo, Soley and & Tezak Band. A.J. Barr Company donated pop, while Mark and Carol Meyer donated the use of their pig roaster and several extra meats.

On Nov. 2, a $1,000 check was presented to Kristi McNichol, superintendent for the Veterans Assistance Commission of Will County.

Romeoville Area Historical Society, White Oak Library District present history program

ROMEOVILLE – The Romeoville Area Historical Society and White Oak Library District presented The History Behind Romeoville’s Business Boom at the Romeoville library on Oct. 1.

The first in a series of programs was about early businesses in old Romeoville

and Hampton Park. The introduction, given by Historical Society President Nancy Hackett, mentioned many stores, restaurants and other businesses that operated between the 1880s and 1990s for which no representatives are available to speak.

Examples are the Mitchell Hotel on New Avenue, Murphy’s Café on Isle a la Cache, and several restaurants and taverns on Isle a la Cache. A display created at the museum showed pictures and ads from many of these sites.

Lou Aguillar’s talk about her experiences in hair dressing began with her early job at Lola’s Beauty Salon when she was a young teen living in Romeoville. She then attended Rickey’s School of Beauty Culture in Romeoville and worked for Lola as a beautician. Eventually when Lola retired, Lou purchased the business and continues it with several assistants.

The oil refinery at Romeo Road and New Avenue on the east side of the canal was the topic for Pete Colarelli from Citgo. He wove the varied history of the site from Pure Oil and Union Oil with the extensive history of Citgo, formerly Cities Service. Statistics for the refinery included gallons of oil produced a day and number of workers as the plant expanded its capacity.

Laura Hastert spoke about the long history of White Fence Farm from the Peabody family through several generations of Hasterts, all living in the area, which had a Lemont address and telephone number at that time. She spoke about the special frying system used to prepare the chicken, the many occasions they hosted and current practices at the restaurant.

The long-established restaurant currently known as Mongo McMichael’s began as the Hill Top View owned by the

LaBiancos. Steve Spandonitis began with his move to Romeoville to work in one of the fast food places near Route 53 and Normantown Road.

He then bought Maryland Fried Chicken and saved enough to buy the larger restaurant that has since been known as the Apollo, Boomerang’s and Mongo McMichael’s.

Andrew Sybert represented Sybert Landscaping. He began with his early years in Romeoville, then described the business and special equipment needed to landscape large properties.

Gary Tendall, also a lifelong resident of Romeoville, talked about his memories of living in the slower-paced village and attending Valley View School, the only elementary school in town. He worked in his father Larry Tendall’s full service gas station and described the rapport among Romeoville gas station owners at that time. If one station was servicing a car and didn’t have the necessary part, they called another station to obtain it.

The program will continue in the spring with more recent businesses and the growth of industry.

What about airport scanners? You don’t need to worry about them, either.

Let me put it in context. We all constantly are exposed to a low level of radiation from the sun. You would have to go through 25,000 airport scanners to be exposed to the amount of radiation you naturally are exposed to in a year.

While the airport scanner doesn’t pose a risk, the airplane does. Once on the plane, don’t sit for more than one hour at a time if you can avoid it. Walk around and stretch your legs frequently to reduce leg cramps. If you must stay in your seat, move your arms and legs to improve blood flow and prevent blood clots from forming. (The same advice applies if you are driving: Take breaks every hour for a short walk.) And always wear a seat belt on an airplane, even if the captain has turned off the seat belt sign.

Finally, drink at least six to eight glasses of water each day. This will keep you from getting dehydrated and also will prevent you from retaining water. Carry a water bottle with you in the car or on the plane and drink from it frequently.

If you take simple precautions, you can have the benefits of traveling throughout most of your pregnancy.

Dear Reader: Being pregnant doesn’t mean you have to stay at home for nine months. There are exceptions; particularly in the last three months, some women develop complications of pregnancy that require them to be resting. But for most women, travel poses no threat to the mother or child.

But traveling by car, train or airplane can be less comfortable when you’re pregnant, so you should take a few precautions to travel comfortably and safely.

First, check with your obstetrical care provider to find out when he or she considers it safe for you to travel. As I’m sure you know, pregnancy typically is divided into three trimesters, with each trimester a three-month period. Travel generally is considered safe during the first and second trimesters. In terms of comfort, the best time to travel is after your fourth month (when morning sickness is gone) and before your third trimester. But if you’re traveling for work, you might not have that much control over your travel schedule.

I do think it’s wise to avoid traveling long distances in the last month before your due date, as due dates can be uncertain and babies can come early. Ask your doctor if he or she recommends you limit long-distance travel even earlier. Airlines also have their own rules. Most airlines prohibit international travel after 32 weeks of pregnancy and domestic travel after 34 to 36 weeks.

am a 46-year-old drug user. I have been addicted for more than 20 years. I know it’s wrong. I know I can be a better person. I got hooked when a supposed friend introduced me to crack in 1992. If I only could go back to that day, I’d kick the you-know-what out of him. I was all set to make something of my life.

In 2010, my dad was diagnosed with lung cancer. It only got worse. I have hurt the people I care about the most. I have stolen from my mom. I have written checks on her bank account and pawned her jewelry. I don’t know what to do.
