Laraway referendum approved

bokon@shawmedia.com Voters overwhelmingly approved referendums to build a new Laraway School and a new Plainfield recreational center.

Approval of the school referendum means the Laraway School District in Joliet can move students from the school on Laraway Road, a heavily traveled truck route.

About 81 percent of the voters approved the Laraway referendum, with the unofficial total being 558 yes votes and 135 no votes.

“It looks like the community really came through for us,” Laraway Superintendent Joe Salmieri said.

The next step is to complete the financing for the project with plans to begin construction in the spring.

“We are looking to open in fall of 2018,” Salmieri said.

Parents and schoolchildren, he said, can look forward to “a new state-of-the-art facility in a safe location.”

Meetings with the community indicated people were inclined to vote for the referendum, he said.

“From the community forums we had and from parents we talked to, we felt we had a lot of support,” Salmieri said.

Voters were able to support the referendum without expecting to pay more in taxes, since the school district expects to fund the school with corporate property taxes generated by the large amount of industrial development in the school district.

The school is estimated to cost $25 million.

Laraway will build the school on a 26acre site on Rowell Avenue.

Plainfield Township Park District

Voters in the Plainfield Township Park District strongly supported a referendum

to build a new recreation center and make park improvements.

The referendum was backed by a large margin with 24,459 yes votes and 18,347 no votes.

The park district sought approval to issue $10.5 million in bonds.

The biggest single item in the plan is the recreation center that would cost $6.5 million. The center is to be built at Bott Park on Renwick Road.

White Oak Library District

One local referendum to lose was the White Oak Library District’s attempt to get support for a tax increase.

About 59 percent of the voters turned down the referendum with a 11,848 yes votes and 17,137 no votes.

The district has libraries in Lockport, Crest Hill and Romeoville.

Trotter, Helland win Grundy County races while county board goes down to wire

roesterle@shawmedia.com Republican Cori Trotter had 12,976 votes compared with Democrat Joan Harrop’s 9,414 in the race for Grundy County Circuit Clerk with all 40 precincts reporting.

Incumbent Republican Jason Helland had 12,883 votes compared with 9,753 for Democratic opponent Brooke Shupe in the race for Grundy County state’s attorney.

Trotter said one of her Jason main objectives should Helland she win the race would be to start integrating better technology into the Grundy County Circuit Clerk’s Office. One specific area would be implementing electronic filing of court documents.

All documents in the Grundy Circuit Clerk’s Office are still hand-written and hand filed. Helland was also voted in as Grundy County state’s attorney in November 2012 after having spent more than eight years in the Kankakee County State’s Attorney’s Office, where he prosecuted 89 jury trials to verdict.

Harold Vota with 3,859 votes and Ann Gill with 3,678 were the leading vote-getters for Grundy County Board positions in District 3, but the third open slot wasn’t quite as decisive. Jim Ryan led by three votes with 3,307 votes to Brian Severson’s total of 3,304 for the third spot. A winner had not been declared.

Ryan felt that, as a county, Grundy already has good tax breaks for companies looking to move here in place, but also would stress to them that the county has all the necessary forms of transportation (highways, trucking, and rail) to move their products. He would promote

the great working force of men and women that Grundy County has to offer In District 1, Republicans John Roth, Don Hansen and Vicki Geiger – all of Morris – were the top three vote-getters. Roth led with 4,676 votes, with Geiger collecting 4,567 and Hansen 4,517.

In District 2’s full-term spot, Eric Rasmusson of Morris was the top vote-getter with 3,600, followed by Debra Jo Kinsella with 3,552. Lana Phillips had 3,085 compared with Mireya Martin’s 2,928 for the third and final available spot.

Phillips had served her “beloved Grundy County” both as an employee and as an elected official in the Circuit Clerk’s office previously. She is very familiar with the committee structure, attending a countless number of their meetings and with the budget process, preparing and managing four budgets, each year during a 39 year tenure as Grundy County clerk and recorder.

Democrats sweep four countywide Will County races

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – There were four countywide seats up for grabs in this election in Will County and the votes were extremely close.

Ultimately, three incumbent Democrats held on for another term while a fourth Democrat won a first term.

County executive will serve unprecedented fourth term

Larry Walsh Sr. has retained his seat as Will County executive.

Walsh received 148,488 votes, or 53.24 percent, in defeating challenger Laurie McPhillips, who received 130,436 votes, or 46.76 percent.

Laurie Walsh, a Democrat McPhillips from Elwood, will begin his fourth term as the county’s CEO in January.

In his campaign, Walsh touted the progress the county has made in his time working together with the Will County Board. He will get an opportunity to help see several projects come to fruition.

Republicans hold majority for Will County Board

aschier@shawmedia.com The Will County Board will continue to include a Republican majority after Tuesday’s election, according to preliminary reports from the Will County Clerk’s Office.

With 300 of 300 precincts reporting, the only district with a partisan makeup that is changing is District 10, which covers parts of Joliet, Shorewood and Plainfield. In that district, long-time Democrat board members Joseph Babich and Steven Wilhelmi did not run for re-election. Taking their seats are Democrat Tyler Marcum and Republican Gloria Dollinger.

Foster, other incumbents win another term

bokon@shawmedia.com U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, won a third consecutive term handily Tuesday.

Foster won by large margins in all four counties in the 11th District against Republican opponent Tonia Khouri.

The unofficial vote count was Foster, 71,568, and Khouri, 46,256.

Bill Foster In DuPage County alone, where Khouri is a County Board member, Foster had 12,782 votes to Khouri’s 8,202.

“I was really heartened by the number of young people that came out to work in our campaign and vote,” Foster said. “I think they realized that this was an important election.”

Foster, who typically introduces himself to audiences as a businessman and scientist, also said that he thought his young supporters “like the idea of at least one scientist being in Congress.”

The race did not seem to be in

doubt from early on in the evening as Foster took a large lead and never gave it up.

Foster’s issues have included the heroin and opioid epidemic and Illinois’ status as what he calls a “payer state,” because Illinois pays more money to the federal government than it gets back.

Asked about his plans for the next term, Foster said, “I think the opioid epidemic is of critical importance to both Democrats and Republicans. I will be seriously disappointed if we don’t make progress on that front.”

The 11th District goes into Will, Kane, DuPage and Cook counties. It includes the Democratic strongholds of Joliet and Aurora.

Will County has the most votes in the district.

Foster got 61 percent of the vote in Will County with an unofficial 52,776 votes to Khouri’s, 34,373.

HULTGREN AHEAD

Unofficial results indicate incumbent Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield, would likely maintain his seat as congressional representative in Illinois 14th District.

As of about 9:30 p.m., Hultgren had

48,130 unofficial votes compared withdemocratic challenger Jim Walz’s 26,526. Votes were counted from different counties the district covers including McHenry, Will, Kane, Randy Hultgren DeKalb and Kendall.

Hultgren has held the seat as representative for Illinois 14th Congressional District since 2011 and said he puts small families and businesses first. He also wants to prioritize infrastructure and transportation.

If elected, he would continue to fight for jobs, families and limited government, he said in a statement.

Walz ran on a platform of representation for middle- and working-class people with a focus on wage raises and preserving social services such as Social Security and Medicare.

KINZINGER AND LIPINSKI

U.S. Reps. Adam Kinzinger and Dan Lipinski won without any opposition on the ballot.

Lipinski, D-Western Springs, issued a statement while the presidential race still was undecided.

“After one of the most divisive elections in history, now is not the time for anyone to gloat or push a one-sided agenda that will ultimately lead to just more gridlock,” Lipinski said. “If anything, this election is proof that we need more leaders who are willing to work to bring people together to find solutions that defend the promise of the American Dream for hardworking Americans.”

Senate District 49

As of 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, state Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Shorewood, had 36,240 votes and Republican challenger Michelle Smith had 34,700 votes in Will and Kendall coun- Jennifer ties with 107 of 110 pre- BertinoTarrant cincts reporting.

Because of the early precinct reporting Tuesday, Smith’s campaign manager, John DeMeulenaere, declined to comment.

Smith, a Plainfield School District 202 board president, has said too many business owners are leaving the state.

She said she wants to foster economic growth by eliminating “job-crushing regulations,” stifling administrative burdens and unreasonably high workers’ compensation costs.

She has said she favors Rauner’s proposals to reform workers’ compensation, impose legislative term limits, reform district mapping and freeze local property taxes.

Senate District 38

For the second time, incumbent state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, defeated Democrat Christine Benson of Ottawa on Tuesday in a race for the 38th Senate District, with most of the pre- Sue Rezin cincts reporting.

Rezin defeated Benson in 2012, gain-

ing 54 percent of the vote.

Tuesday evening, Rezin defeated Benson again, this time with 60 percent of the vote.

Rezin had 44,891 votes to Benson’s 32,679 votes with 17 precincts Christine outstanding in LaSalle Benson County late Tuesday evening. There were 201 out of 218 total precincts reporting in the district.

The 38th Senate District includes portions of Kendall, Grundy, Putnam, LaSalle, Livingston, Bureau and Will counties.

During a recent candidates forum, Rezin said companies looking to move to a state look for stability.

“Do you have a budget? Do you spend within your means? Is your budget balanced?” she said. “Do you have unfunded liabilities, a lot of debt? Because companies know they will have to pay for it.”

House District 75

State Rep. David Welter, R-Morris, had the most votes with a total of 23,582 votes and Democrat challenger Martha

Shugart gained 17,378 votes in Will, Grundy and Kendall counties in all precincts reporting.

Lasalle County’s website was inaccessible Tuesday.

Welter said he’s visit- David Welter ed the polls to see what was happening and he says he thinks it will be a good night.

“We’re optimistic. We worked hard and hopefully the results pay off Martha tonight,” Welter said.

Will County voting: Local residents make national decisions

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A gray drizzle was falling Tuesday morning as voters made their way into Messiah Lutheran Church.

Though the parking lot was full, there was no waiting inside. A volunteer wearing a Cubs ballcap and World Champions T-shirt greeted the electorate and asked whether they lived in Troy Precinct 18 or 19. Those who remembered or brought their voter identification cards got ballots while another volunteer checked a list for the last name of a woman who forgot. Equipped with the proper ticket of democracy, they walked into the red, white and blue curtained booth, came out minutes later and fed the ballot into a machine that resembled a computer printer. Some took a sticker confirming their participation.

Election 2016 was underway.

Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots said the process went smoothly, though there was a slight delay while the polls opened so election judges could update the pollbooks – electronic tablets that keep track of voter information, including anyone who already filed an

In the five weeks leading up to decision day, 60,630 people voted early in Will County, Schultz Voots said.

“We had 27 sites throughout the county for early voting, including my

office, and this is by far the biggest early turnout I’ve ever seen,” she said.

An additional 30,000 residents voted by mail after choosing that option when they were issued their registration card in the past two years. All those totals

will be added after the 300 precincts in Will County submit their results Tuesday night.

Will County had 76.14 percent registered voter turnout in 2008 and 71.25 percent in 2012, Schultz Voots said.

Jordan Smuksta of Joliet felt it was important to vote because “we have the right and the freedom to do” so. She tries to vote in every local and national election.

“I pay attention to Joliet more than the big picture. I want to make sure we get the best representation with what affects us directly,” she said.

Smuksta didn’t feel any particular issue stood out from others, but the biggest concern for Kevin Dzurny of Joliet is who will select the next Supreme Court justice. The next president will appoint a new judge to the bench, which is currently an even split between four conservatives and four liberals.

“There’s a lot of big issues coming up for decision, and I think that’s really where the most impact is,” Dzurny said.

Dzurny votes every four years in presidential elections, but fills out a full ballot.

U.S. Rep. Duckworth unseats U.S. Sen. Kirk

CHICAGO – Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth unseated Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk on Tuesday, becoming the second woman to represent Illinois in the chamber and delivering a win that her party is banking on as it tries to retake control of the Senate.

The two-term congresswoman from Hoffman Estates entered the race a heavy favorite, as Illinois has long backed Democrats for statewide office, especially in presidential election years.

Speaking at a victory party in Chicago, Duckworth recalled the day 12 years ago when the helicopter she was co-piloting in Iraq was shot down. She lost both legs but survived thanks to members of her unit who carried her lifeless body to safety, one of whom was in the crowd to help celebrate.

“Just as I try every day to live up to the sacrifice my buddies made to carry me off that battlefield, I will go to work in the Senate looking to honor the sacrifice and quiet dignity of all those Illinoisans who are facing challenges of

“I believe in an America that doesn’t give up on anyone who hasn’t given up on themselves.”

Minutes earlier, Kirk told supporters gathered at a party in the Chicago suburb of Northbrook that he called Duckworth to congratulate her and in-

vited her to a join him for a beer at Chicago’s Billy Goat Tavern.

“This beer summit will show kids across Illinois that opponents can peacefully bury the hatchet after a tough election, and that what unites us as Americans is much stronger than what divides us,” Kirk said.

Kirk worked for months to convince voters that he’s independent of his party by criticizing GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump as “racist” and “delusional” and talking up his record of breaking from Republicans on issues such as gun control and gay marriage.

Kirk also hurt his own campaign with a series of controversial statements. He had to apologize to Duckworth last month after mocking her immigrant background – she was born in Bangkok to a Chinese-Thai mother and American father – and her family’s military history during a debate. Two organizations withdrew their endorsements, calling the remarks racist.

Lockport man dies after fall from pole while celebrating Cubs’ win

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Authorities say a college student from Lockport who fell while celebrating the Chicago Cubs’ World Series victory has died in an Iowa City hospital.

Johnson County authorities say 21-yearold Kyle Leeney died Monday. The exact cause of death has not been released.

Authorities say Leeney fell after climbing a light pole outside a bar on the Iowa City pedestrian mall last week as the Cubs ended their long quest for a World Series title.

Police say he was taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

University of Iowa officials say Leeney was a sophomore from Lockport who was majoring in mechanical engineering.

JOLIET – One worker was hospitalized while another had to be rescued by firefighters after scaffolding collapsed Monday in Joliet.

The incident occurred about 12:30 p.m. while contractors were working outside a residence in the 200 block of Herkimer Street, Joliet Fire Department Battalion Chief Michael Stromberg said.

The men were installing a decorative frame around the second-story gutters and had set the scaffolding and ladder on a driveway that had a slight incline.

As material was being taken up by the two men, the scaffolding collapsed. A third worker called 911.

“One worker fell to the ground from the second-story roof line. ... The other was able to balance himself on top of a second floor window while hanging onto the rain gutter until firefighters arrived,” Stromberg said. “The crew from Truck Company 1 raised a ladder to the trapped worker and he descended on his own.”

The worker who fell suffered a broken arm and facial injuries, according to fire department reports. He was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.

Voters talk about election decisions, tensions as they hit the polls

The Associated Press Soon after Roy Brook voted Tuesday at a community center in Bessemer, Alabama, he grabbed an American flag and set out to persuade others to do the same.

“I’m not telling anyone what to do,” said Brook, 67, who resumed the place alongside local roads he has occupied for much of the last year, with a sign urging passers-by to vote. “The idea is to reach as many people as I can with the message of America...

If you’re here, love it, be a part of it.”

On Tuesday, millions of Americans marked the end of a bitterly divisive presidential campaign by joining him to do just that. They expressed both strong support and deep dislike for Brook’s candidate, Republican Donald Trump, as well as for Democrat Hillary Clinton. But if they agreed on one thing it was that, after a presidential campaign laced with vitriol, they would at least have the final word.

“I’m excited to be here and have it matter so much,” said Gabby Formica, 24, a graduate student who cast a ballot for Clinton on Tuesday in South Philadelphia, noting that Pennsylvania was a swing state.

Voters’ determination to be counted was evident from the moment the first polls opened in the darkness of midnight in northern New Hampshire, and dawn elsewhere. Throughout the day, long lines and passionate opinions confirmed the stakes.

They waited outside churches and synagogues, community centers and schools, often with snacks and children in tow.

In Los Angeles, they voted alongside the lap lanes of the Echo Park Pool and in Chicago, they cast ballots in a bowling alley over the racket of downed pins.

They voted at a county fairgrounds in Moscow, Idaho, a strip mall recently swamped by 10-foot floodwaters in Denham Springs, Louisiana, a Buddhist temple in Long Beach, California, and on the run in Colorado, Oregon and elsewhere where special drop boxes accepted ballots from joggers and motorists.

Some celebrated their votes, confident of the outcome.

Others described the election as an albatross weighing on them.

“I’ve been really stressed out about this election,” said Belinda Hedrick, 62, of Mission, Kansas, who came straight from a spin class, and was still sweating, when she cast a vote for Clinton. “It’s the first time

I’ve ever woke up at night worrying about stuff.”

In Indianapolis, biologist Scott Salmon, 32, said he, too, woke up anxious, before biking to the polls.

“We have a bottle of champagne if Hillary wins and a bottle of rum if Trump wins – that kind of anxious,” he said.

Many voting Tuesday hewed to their established politics. But some

said the accusations of the campaign had pushed them across party lines.

Lisa Moore, a Republican from Glen Rock, New Jersey, said she voted for Clinton. “I think the Republican Party has gone way right of the majority of at least the residents of this section of the country,” said Moore, an exercise instructor.

“As a woman, in good conscience, and as the mother of a daughter, I can’t vote for somebody who’s so morally reprehensible” as Trump, she said.

Meanwhile, Democrat Jim Eul, 61, a retired plumbing inspector for the city of Chicago, said his intense dislike for Clinton had persuaded him to vote for Trump. He said he couldn’t bear sitting out the election, but expressed disappointment in the choices. “You’ve got two big political organizations and these are the only two they can come up with?”

Regardless of party, voters agreed the stakes of the election were tremendous.

In Anchorage, Alaska, Jeanette O’Brien, 72, said she voted for Trump because he is capable of rebuilding schools and cities that she blames President Barack Obama for letting decay. But whoever wins, she expects unrest, even a possible civil war.

“Millions of Americans will stand up to take the country back if they have to,” she said.

A fellow Alaskan, Warren Urda, explained his vote for Clinton was also about long-term consequences.

“I believe that person will select the next four Supreme Court justices and that will affect us for the next 50 years, not just for the next four years,” said Urda, a retired dentist.

Many voters expressed worries that merely counting the votes will not heal the country’s divide.

On Tuesday, Elizabeth Gil, a law student in Miami Lakes, Florida, would not say who she voted for, but expressed hope for what comes next.

“I think people want to move forward,” said Gil, who avoided early voting because she treasures the experience of going to the polls on Election Day. “There’s too much division. If we’re going to work with one another, to hear each other’s different points of views, that is how we can move forward together as a country.”

WASHINGTON – Donald Trump captured crucial victories over Hillary Clinton on Tuesday night in Florida, Ohio and North Carolina, showing remarkable strength in three of the nation’s most fiercely fought battleground states in an unexpectedly tight race for the presidency.

Clinton carried Virginia and Colorado, as well as California, the nation’s largest prize. With a handful of other states still undecided, neither candidate had cleared the 270 Electoral College votes needed to win the White House.

Michigan and Wisconsin, two Midwestern powerhouses that haven’t voted for a Republican presidential candidate since the 1980s, took on unexpected importance. Clinton’s campaign had largely taken both for granted, but made a late push in Michigan in the race’s final days.

The uncertainty sent Dow Jones futures and Asian markets tumbling, reflecting investor concern over what a Trump presidency might mean for the economy and trade.

As Clinton’s team anxiously waited for results to roll in, the candidate tweeted to supporters, “Whatever happens tonight, thank you for everything.”

Clinton, a fixture in American politics for decades, was hoping to become the first woman to serve as commander in chief. She faced stiff competition from Trump, the billionaire businessman who tapped into a searing strain of economic populism.

Trump picked up a number of reliably Republican states, while Clinton won in Democratic territory. But the race was to be determined by fewer than a dozen competitive states where the candidates spent millions of dollars and much of the fall wooing voters.

Exit polls underscored the deep divisions that have defined the 2016 contest. Women nationwide supported Clinton by a double-digit margin, while men were significantly more likely to back Trump. More than half of white voters backed the Republican, while nearly 9 in 10 blacks and two-thirds of Hispanics voted for the Democrat.

The 45th president will inherit an anxious nation, deeply divided by economic and educational opportunities, race and culture. The economy has rebounded from the depths of recession, though many Americans have yet to benefit. New terror threats from home and abroad have

raised security fears.

Clinton asked voters to keep the White House in her party’s hands for a third straight term. She cast herself as heir to President Barack Obama’s legacy and pledged to make good on his unfinished agenda, including passing immigration legislation, tightening restrictions on guns and tweaking his signature health care law.

But she struggled throughout the race with persistent questions about her honesty and trustworthiness.

Those troubles flared anew late in the race, when FBI Director James Comey announced a review of new emails from her tenure at the State Department. On Sunday, just two days before Election Day, Comey said there was nothing in the material to warrant criminal charges against Clinton.

Trump, the New York real estate developer who lives in a gold-plated Manhattan penthouse, forged a striking connection with white, working-class Americans who feel left behind in the changing economy and diversifying country. He cast immigration, both from Latin America and the Middle East, as the root of many problems plaguing the nation and called for building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

“I see so many hopes and so many dreams out there that didn’t happen, that could have happened, with leadership, with proper leadership,” he said by telephone on Fox News before casting his own ballot in Manhattan.

“And people are hurt so badly.”

Dems’ path to Senate majority narrows

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Democrats’ path to retaking the Senate majority narrowed Tuesday as Republicans held onto key seats in North Carolina, Indiana and Florida.

Democrats grabbed a Republican-held seat in Illinois, but as Republicans defended a slim 54-46 majority in an unpredictable election year, key races in Missouri, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Nevada remained too close to call.

In North Carolina, Democrats had high hopes of unseating entrenched GOP incumbent Sen. Richard Burr, who infuriated even his own party with his laidback campaign style. But in the end he had little trouble holding off the challenge from Democrat Deborah Ross, a former state legislator and director of the North Carolina ACLU. In Illinois, GOP Sen. Mark Kirk had long been considered the most endangered Republican incumbent, as he faced a strong challenger in a state that favors Democrats in presidential election years. Democratic Rep. Tammy Duckworth, a double-amputee Iraq war veteran with a compelling personal story, ousted Kirk.

And in Florida, GOP Sen. Marco Rubio beat Democratic Rep. Patrick Murphy, giving Rubio a platform from which he could mount another bid for president in 2020.

The outcome was not unexpected since Murphy had been abandoned by his own party in the final weeks of the

campaign, but polls had tightened heading into Election Day. In New York, meanwhile, Sen. Chuck Schumer, the Democrats’ leader-in-waiting for a new Congress, easily won re-election. Results elsewhere would tell whether Schumer leads a Democratic majority in the Senate next year, or a minority when he replaces retiring Nevada Sen. Harry Reid

“I hope the voters of America will bless us with a Democratic majority in the Senate,” Schumer told cheering supporters in Manhattan.

GOP incumbents around the country faced energized Democratic challengers trying to oust them in costly and caustic battles shadowed every step of the way by the polarizing presidential race between Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton.

In GOP-held Missouri and New Hampshire, it looked like it could go either way as voting progressed. The races were also close in Pennsylvania and Nevada, the one Democratic-held seat that was hotly contested this election.

Democrats need to pick up four seats to take the majority if Clinton wins the White House and can send her vice president to cast tie-breaking votes in a 50-50 Senate. Democrats would need to pick up five seats if Trump wins.

The GOP retook the majority just two years ago. And even though control of the Senate is likely to be razor-thin whichever party ends up on top, the advantages of being in the majority are significant. The controlling party holds the committee chairmanships, sets the legislative agenda and runs investigations. First up is likely to be a nominee to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court.

GOP limits losses, nears 2 more years of House control

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Republicans were on track to secure two more years of House control Tuesday, as GOP lawmakers triumphed in districts in Florida and Virginia that Democrats had hoped Donald Trump’s divisive comments would make their own.

Democrats defeated two Florida GOP incumbents, but their prospects for putting a big dent in House Republicans’ historic majority seemed in question in early results. Republicans grabbed one Democratic-held district north of Miami, kept another in Indiana that Democrats hoped would signal a political wave in their direction, and were leading in crucial races in Illinois and Michigan.

With the GOP presidential candidate rousing opposition in many suburban and ethnically diverse districts, Democrats were hoping to gain Republi-

can-held seats in New Jersey, Nevada and California. But they seemed all but certain to fall short of the 30-seat addition they needed to take command of the House for the first time in six years.

Democrats have gained that many seats in just five of the 35 elections since World War II. In Florida, freshman GOP Rep. Carlos Curbelo won a race that showed Trump’s damage to Republicans would be more limited than Democrats hoped.

With around 7 in 10 of the Miami-area district’s voters Hispanic, the race became one of the country’s most expensive with a price tag exceeding $18 million, but Curbelo held on.

Virginia freshman Rep. Barbara Comstock did the same, keeping her seat in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., despite Democrats’ relentless attempts to tie her to Trump.

The two sides spent more than $20 million on that contest in a district of highly educated, affluent voters that

both sides had viewed as vulnerable to a Democratic takeover.

“This could be a really good night for America,” House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., who won a 10th term, told supporters in his hometown of Janesville, Wisconsin.

While Trump hurt Republicans in some areas, his appeal to working-class white voters and their antipathy to Hillary Clinton, Trump’s Democratic rival for president, was helping GOP candidates in others. That could help Republicans limit an erosion of their majority in the chamber that could leave hardline conservatives with added clout to vex party leaders.

Florida, where court-ordered redistricting created a bunch of competitive races, was also the site of Election Day’s first two defeated incumbents, including 12-term veteran Rep. John Mica, 73, in the Orlando area. Democratic challenger Charlie Crist, once the state’s Republican governor, defeated another

GOP lawmaker in St Petersburg.

The GOP’s current 247-188 majority, which includes three vacancies, is a high-water mark for House Republicans since the 270 members they had in 1931. Only several dozen of the chamber’s seats were considered competitive, though most of those considered at risk were held by Republicans.

Both parties’ candidates and outside groups spent nearly $1.1 billion combined on House campaigns, shy of the $1.2 billion record in 2012, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan research group. Republicans had only a slight financial edge.

Even with the Ryan-led House GOP holding a formidable advantage, work has stalled on spending bills after hitting objections from conservatives, including the roughly 40 members of the hard-right Freedom Caucus. With moderate GOP lawmakers likely among Tuesday’s election losers, dissident Republicans’ leverage will likely grow next year.

In 2012, the county had 275,164 ballots cast with a 71.25 percent voter turnout. In 2016, the county had 296,800 ballots cast with 72.17 percent voter turnout.

Mike Jobson, 61, of Mahomet, backed Kirk based on one reason: “Government is too big. We want to get the power back in our hands.”

He also said he thinks Kirk “has his heart in the right place.”

Democrats were so confident in Duckworth’s odds they pulled back on planned TV airtime in the final weeks of the campaign to invest in states where the polls were tighter.

She follows Carol Moseley Braun, who in 1992 became the first woman elected to the Senate from Illinois.

McPhillips, a Plainfield Republican and former Will County employee and elected official, promised to hold the line on taxes if elected. She also said that after 45 years in different forms of elected office, Walsh had become part of the establishment.

She vowed to challenge and direct executive office employees and said she believes in term limits.

McPhillips has nearly 30 years of experience in county positions dating back to 1985. She was Will County recorder of deeds from 2004 to 2008 but lost a re-election bid in 2008 and 2012.

She was appointed in 2010 to fill a twoyear vacancy on the County Board.

Before early voters were factored in, Walsh had a small lead on McPhillips.

“I knew it was tough race,” McPhillips said when reached for comment with all 300 precincts reporting. “His name has been around for 45 years, so I had a tough fight on my hands, but I think I did pretty well.”

Walsh’s lead grew when about 93,000 early voters were added at 10:15 p.m. McPhillips was hoping the 93,000 would turn out in her favor, saying, “You never know – 93,000 is a lot.”

Judge: Man guilty in 2011 University Park murder

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Will County judge on Tuesday found a Country Club Hills man guilty of murder for ambushing a University Park teenager in 2011.

Tommie Crockwell Sr., 46, faces 45 years to life in prison when he is sentenced Feb. 1 by Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak.

A jury had the case for three days last week before the defense asked Bertani-Tomczak to decide the verdict as a bench trial. Defense attorney Sam Adam ar- Tommie gued there was no evi- Crockwell Sr. dence against Crockwell besides his own statements.

On Oct. 26, 2011, Johnny Rouse, 19, was walking through Craig Park in University Park when he was fatally shot.

An investigation by the Will-Grundy Major Crimes Task Force was stymied until January 2012 when then-Universi-

ty Park Police Chief Mel Davis’ cousin, Anton Davis, called his longtime friend, Crockwell Sr., about the rumor that his son, Tommie Crockwell Jr., was involved.

That phone conversation led to Davis wearing a wire and hidden camera to visit Crockwell Sr., who admitted to being the killer and offered several details that were not known to the public.

Crockwell Sr. said he’d killed Rouse because the teen had robbed his brother, according to the recording. Crockwell Sr. was driven to the park and waited in the bushes until Rouse walked past, then shot him once.

“Tommie Crockwell [Sr.] is a spineless murderer who crept up under cover of night on a youth half his age and then shot him in the back of the neck,” State’s Attorney James Glasgow said in a statement. “The method in which he gunned down this young man is the absolute definition of cowardice.”

Assistant State’s Attorneys Peter Wilkes, Dan Egan and Sondra Denmark prosecuted the case.

Bienville “Benny” Jones Sr., was born on August 14, 1928 in Brookhaven, MS to the union of William Jones and Binetta Smith. He departed this life on Monday, October 31, 2016.

Bienville worked as a laborer for Brown & Lambert until he retired in 1990. He loved fishing, hunting and gardening. He also loved sitting on his porch with his dog, Lightening, waving at people passing by. He loved German shepherds and Rottweilers.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellis Marie; his parents, William Jones and Binetta Ashford; his sisters, Ida Riddle, Rowena Vaughn, Katie Ruth Johnson; and son, William Henry.

Employed by Jimmy Johns and Aurelio’s in Lockport. He was a graduate of Lockport Township High School, Class of 2014; attended Joliet Junior College and was currently a student at the University of Iowa City, studying mechanical engineering.

Kyle was an amazing son, brother, grandson and friend. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Kyle has inspired and touched people’s lives and gave so much in his short time here on Earth. He continued to give life to many through the gift of organ donation.

CHICAGO – Matt Ridley climbed his ladder, scrawled a tribute to his deceased loved ones and high-fived his mom when his feet hit the sidewalk.

The Cubs winning it all still seemed a bit surreal to him. Yet, there he was writing “Ridley Nation” high on the brick bleacher wall along Waveland Avenue in honor of his brother, father and uncle.

“Every time I hear the call of the last out, it almost sounds like it’s not real – like it’s a joke,” Ridley said Monday.

No joke, the Cubs at long last won the World Series when they beat the Cleveland Indians last week. And their first championship in 108 years stirred all sorts of emotions.

Fans who weren’t sure they ever would see it happen have been thinking about loved ones who never got to witness it. They’ve been flowing to Wrigley Field in a steady stream, turning the walls and sidewalks outside the famed ballpark into one gigantic chalkboard.

The bricks beyond the ivy are jammed with names and notes to family members. There are messages encouraging the team, and drawings, too.

It’s all in chalk, and it’s all about to go away.

Trooper injured in altercation with driver leaves hospital

CHICAGO – Authorities said an Illinois State Police trooper who was injured during an altercation with an armed motorist at a suburban Chicago expressway toll plaza has been released from the hospital.

State police said the trooper, who was not identified, was injured in the neck during the Monday incident. He was taken to a hospital, and police said Tuesday he is doing well.

Judge: Hastert abuse victim can proceed with lawsuit

YORKVILLE – An Illinois judge said a lawsuit filed by a sexual abuse victim against former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert can go forward.

The two friends have been following the Cubs for decades, going back to the black cat and the collapse against the New York Mets in 1969. They recalled ditching school to go to Wrigley Field as teenagers and cheer on those “Lovable Losers.” In some ways, this championship run was like a shock to the system – a glorious shock to the system.

“In our lives, we don’t have a lot of hope,” Bresnahan said. “There’s a lot of bad stuff going on. And it’s like, ‘Oh my God, if the Cubs can do it in 108 years, we can do anything.’ Right?”

Illinois suing Volkswagen over diesel emissions

CHICAGO – Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has sued German automaker Volkswagen over the environmental impact of an emissions cheating scandal revealed last year.

The lawsuit, filed Monday, accused Volkswagen and its Audi and Porsche units of tampering with emission controls in 2-liter and 3-liter VW and Audi diesel engine cars in violation of Illinois environmental laws. The lawsuit said more than 19,000 Illinois vehicles are affected.

Madigan was among 43 state attorneys general who earlier this year reached a $275 million settlement with Volkswagen for selling and leasing diesel vehicles with illegal software that concealed the pollution levels.

Investigators probe mass grave in field near Mosul

The Associated Press BAGHDAD – The stench of death drew Iraqi soldiers to the unsettled plot of land freshly liberated from Islamic State fighters.

When a bulldozer scraped the ground, bones poked from just beneath the surface, along with clothing scraps, garbage bags, human remains swarming with flies – and even a child’s stuffed animal.

About 100 bodies, many of them decapitated, are suspected to be buried in what is likely the latest mass grave left by the retreating jihadis, officials said.

Investigators on Tuesday began their probe of the site, located near an agricultural school in the town of Hamam al-Alil.

The gruesome discovery by troops advancing on militant-held Mosul fits a pattern in territory retaken from IS. The extremist group killed hundreds as it swept across northern and central parts of Iraq in 2014 and is believed to have carried out a brutal crackdown since the Oct. 17 start of an offensive to recapture the country’s second-largest city.

“Investigators flew in this morning,” said Haider Majeed, a Cabinet official in charge of mass grave inquiries. “They’re conducting examinations to determine the cause of death.”

It was unclear who the victims were, although the discovery of a stuffed animal raised the harrowing possibility that children may be among the dead.

In Geneva, the U.N. human-rights office said it was investigating whether the site was connected to reports about the alleged killing

of police in the same area.

“We had reports that 50 former Iraqi police officers had been killed in a building outside Mosul,” spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani said. “This building was actually the same agricultural facility, agricultural college, that has been cited right now as the site of these mass graves.”

She also said the U.N. had received information alleging that IS last week abducted at least 295 former security forces personnel from villages around the northwestern town of Tal Afar, as well as the western part of the village of Mawaly. The fate of the men is unknown.

About 30 sheikhs also reportedly were taken from the Sinjar district, with one report saying more than half of them were killed. The militants are alleged to have forcibly moved about 1,500 families to Mosul’s airport from Hamam al-Alil, she added.

Iraqi troops and Kurdish peshmerga forces are converging on Mosul, although their deepest advance into an eastern sliver has stalled after militants counterattacked from populated areas.

To the northeast, about 8 miles from the city, the peshmerga continued their push on the town of Bashiqa, believed to be deserted except for dozens of IS fighters. Mortar fire, automatic weapons and explosions echoed through the morning as a thick plume of smoke hung over parts of the town, obscuring the view of warplanes from the U.S.-led coalition.

More than 34,000 people have been displaced from Mosul, the U.N. said, with about three-fourths of them settled in camps; the rest are in host communities.

“This is a reflection of an evolving problem, especially with changing social attitudes and media.”

Harry has been linked to a number of women in the past, including another actress, Cressida Bonas. Media intrusion was also seen as having hurt that relationship. In 2012, he spoke of the difficulties of finding a partner willing to take on the responsibilities of being a royal.

Harry said Tuesday’s statement was issued in hopes that the media “can pause and reflect before any further damage is done.” But in confirming his romance with the American actress, the royal also made a very personal relationship public – and there’s no turning back now.

Barnett, at Westminster University, said there wasn’t much the royals could do in the face of a rambunctious press.

Despite recent inquiries into media ethics triggered by tabloid phone-hacking allegations, Barnett said British news outlets remain as aggressive as ever.

LONDON – It’s the British royals versus the press – again – and Prince Harry thinks enough is enough.

In a highly unusual statement, the prince on Tuesday lashed out at the media for intruding on the privacy of his new girlfriend, American actress Meghan Markle. The 32-year-old royal said the media had crossed a line with articles that had “racial undertones,” and pleaded: “This is not a game.”

The condemnation was the latest in an often uneasy dance between Britain’s royals and an international press hungry for any tidbit about royal scandal or courtship. Both Harry and his brother, Prince William, have spoken candidly about their distrust of the media: Their mother, Princess Diana, died in a 1997 car accident while being pursued by paparazzi, and William’s wife, Kate, was relentlessly scrutinized for years before the couple married in 2011.

It looks like nothing has changed.

Kensington Palace described how journalists tried to break into Markle’s home, how newspapers offered “substantial bribes” to her ex-boyfriend, and said nearly everyone she knows has been bombarded for information. Mar-

kle’s mother couldn’t even get to her front door without jostling reporters.

“What is extraordinary about this letter is the level of ethical conduct breaches it details,” said Steven Barnett, a communications professor at the University of Westminster.

“You have to feel something for Harry, who is Prince Harry presumably thinking of his mother and what she had to put up with.”

Markle, 35, is best known for her role as a feisty paralegal in the U.S. television drama Meghan “Suits.”

Many tabloids allud- Markle ed to her mixed-race heritage – she has an African-American mother and a white father. One Daily Mail headline described her ancestors as “a tailor, a teacher and a cleaner in racially-divided Jim Crow South.” Another dubbed her a “saucy divorcee.”

The Daily Mirror linked Markle with an online pornography site, saying clips of her from “Suits” featured on the adult site.

The innocuous-looking mailer began arriving last Wednesday.

Whoever sent it used plain, manila envelopes with first-class postage.

Usually campaigns use bulk mail, but those have permit numbers, making them traceable. First-class mail isn’t so easily traceable.

There was no return address on the envelopes. Whoever sent it used preprinted address labels. The letters were addressed to a generic “Registered Voter” recipient.

Inside was a picture printed on somewhat expensive photo stock paper.

“Got Avery?” was the headline above a poorly photoshopped picture of state Rep. Avery Bourne’s (R-Raymond) head on someone else’s nude body.

It was probably the vilest thing to happen during a legislative campaign that I’ve seen in all the years I’ve been doing this. And that’s a lot of years writing about a lot of vile muck.

Stamped on the back of the photo was a date of Oct. 7 – which likely shows that this mailer had been planned for quite some time, and could provide investigators with a clue about where it was produced and maybe even who did it.

As I write this before the election, the mailer hadn’t been widely sent, perhaps because of the cost of both the postage and the paper. But its distri-

VIEWS Rich Miller bution wasn’t confined to Bourne’s Downstate district. The first to report receiving it last Wednesday was an official at the Sangamon County Farm Bureau, which is north of Bourne’s district. The Farm Bureau quickly notified Bourne and she went over there to pick it up.

But others saw it in their mailboxes that day, too. Bourne’s Democratic opponent, Mike Mathis, was called by a high-level House Democratic staff after somebody forwarded it to them. Mathis called Bourne on Wednesday evening to express his shock and to deny all involvement.

Rep. Bourne told me last week that many of her campaign contributors got the piece, suggesting that the culprit or culprits used publicly available information. The State Police told her that her endorsement list could’ve been used as well. But the Sangamon County Farm Bureau and some others who received the mailer aren’t involved in her race.

Bourne’s grandmother and great-grandmother both received the mailer. They were, of course, appalled.

A friend of Bourne’s opponent also received the mailer, even though the guy, I’m told, isn’t at all involved in politics.

The immediate, private reaction from the top on both sides was to blame the other side. Was it a “false flag” operation or an incredibly dirty Democratic trick?

But that speculation was probably ludicrous, and eventually everybody calmed down enough to admit it.

The Republicans wouldn’t ever do something as disgusting as publicly humiliate the youngest woman in the House like that (or any of their female candidates, for that matter). And the Democrats aren’t stupidly insane enough to put their own candidate at risk by doing something that despicable to Bourne.

So both sides’ initial reactions seemed to be more about self-preservation during the inevitable finger-pointing than sober judgment.

If I had to guess, I’d say the culprit (or culprits) is likely some local weirdo (or weirdos) with an ax to grind who has just enough political knowledge and experience to make him or her dangerous.

Unfortunately, there are more than a few of those types out there in our current age of weaponized misogyny.

You don’t have to spend much time on

Twitter or Facebook to see this type of behavior. But posting a photo-shopped picture on Twitter takes very little effort. These envelopes were likely stuffed, labeled and stamped individually by hand. That takes time and, to me, makes this even creepier.

Whether that person simply wanted to hurt Bourne or damage Mathis’ campaign – or possibly do both things at once – is something we might never know. But I gotta figure that anyone who is this loathsome to go to all this trouble will want to brag about it and/ or was stupid enough to leave a clue here and there. The fact that the letter was apparently sent to one of Mathis’ nonpolitical friends means whoever did this has some local knowledge.

Mathis, for his part, did all he could to strenuously deny his involvement and denounce the mailer. He even showed up for Bourne’s press conference last Thursday to show his solidarity. He did the right thing by a woman who was horribly wronged.

But right or wrong, the opponent usually gets the blame for this stuff in voters’ minds.

What a truly awful way to end one of the foulest campaign seasons ever.

Knudsen father-son cross country titles an IHSA first

cherron@shawmedia.com Jim Knudsen briefly lost sight of where his son, Soren, was late in last Saturday’s Class 3A boys cross country finals at Peoria’s Detweiller Park.

But when the 1981 Class AA champion from Lockport located him, a brief lead had greatly expanded and Soren, a senior at Minooka, was on his way to joining Jim as the first father-son state champions in the 70year history of the sport. It’s believed that only four other father-son duos

have won championships in the United States.

Knudsen posted a time of 14:02 to beat Lyons Township’s Danny Kilrea by six seconds to become the Indians’ first individual champion in the sport.

His time was the 10th-best on the course dating back to 1971. Jim Knudsen’s time in the 1981 race was 14:22.

“This was the fruition of all of the work that I’ve put in during the last eight years,” Soren Knudsen said.

“The last two years have been completely up and down, a roller coaster.

Winning it was a big relief. It feels re-

ally good to say that I’m a state champ after all of the problems that I’ve had in the past.

“Once I realized how fast I was moving, I thought that no one was really with me, but I wasn’t sure. With about 500 meters to go, I heard something over the loudspeaker that said that I had a big gap, and that’s when I said, ‘Alright, don’t let up, and go full steam ahead, charge into that line and don’t hold anything back or let anyone nip me at the line.’ ” “In the first few minutes after I won, I didn’t have any thoughts. I was

completely speechless. The moments after that were ones that I’m never going to forget for the rest of my life.

Sharing them with the people who mean the most to me was the best moment of my life.”

Knudsen admitted that he was unusually worried about this race, where he also was challenged by Sandburg’s Dylan Jacobs (14:10), York’s Charlie Kern (14:12) and Lake Zurich’s Brian Griffith (14:14), who placed from third to fifth.

Area’s five survivors look to take next step Now that they have come this far, what are the chances the Joliet area’s five survivors in the state high school football playoffs can take the next step?

Plainfield North (9-2) will kick off the local quarterfinal activity at 2 p.m.

Saturday when the Tigers entertain Rockford Auburn (10-1) in a Class 7A battle. Morris (10-1) is hosting Metamora (8-3) in Class 5A with a 3 p.m. kickoff.

Two games begin at 5 p.m. – Wilmington (11-0) at IC Catholic (11-0) in Class 3A and Lemont (11-0) at St. Laurence (8-3) in Class 6A. Our Class 8A matchup, Maine South (8-3) at Lincoln-Way East (9-2), will begin at 6 p.m.

As you would expect at this point, all of our remaining teams are facing quality opponents. Yet, don’t be surprised if we have a few of them in next week’s semifinals. Let’s take a look at how that could happen.

Rockford Auburn at Plainfield North:

Continued from page 23 “I don’t really get nervous; it’s been a solid six years since I really freaked out about a race,” Knudsen said. “I was nervous the night before and the day of, which was totally foreign to me. And then, about an hour before the race, I started coming to terms with what was ahead, and I realized that I probably had a pretty good chance.

“There were five of us who all had an incredible shot and were really good runners and were faster than most state champions are. With all of us not knowing who would win, it made us so much more competitive, and it was such a fast race because of that.

“The five of us who were in the mix ended up finishing 12 seconds apart. We all have incredibly different running styles, so you didn’t know where each person would play his strength. You had to think about all four of these guys and what their strengths were. When it looked to be my chance, I just had to take it with complete confidence and go for it.”

Accomplishing the same feat as his father and becoming the first father-son champions in the sport in Illinois is special to the younger Knudsen.

“Two state champions in one family really speaks to our character and the passion that we hold as a family and the discipline that we’re aware of,” Soren

is in the playoffs for the third time in four years.

The big thing everyone notices about Auburn is its size. An offensive line that averages about 300 pounds has led the way for two backs, Daquawn Bell and Drequan Friar, to top 1,000 yards rushing. Tackle Vederian Lowe, who checks in at 6-foot-5, 340 pounds, has signed with Illinois and is rated the ninth-best offensive lineman in the state by Lemming Prep Insider.

The Knights also have quickness – but then, so does North – on both sides of the ball. The Tigers had allowed seven points total in their five previous games before pounding No. 1 seed Bradley, 49-20, last Saturday.

On offense, meanwhile, North has been a machine of late, averaging 42.7 points in its past six games. Auburn has a good defense, but good may not get it done against the Tigers.

Metamora at Morris: Morris beat

Washington, 20-3, in Week 2, and Metamora edged Washington, 14-7, in Week 4. Metamora is back on track after losing three of four in Weeks 5 through 8. The Redbirds’ strength on offense is running the ball, and one of the Redskins’ strengths is its rush defense.

The two teams match up closely on paper. But Morris traditionally has gotten a boost from the home crowd in its home playoff games, and that could be the wild card.

Wilmington at IC Catholic: This one is worrisome. Wilmington, of course, has enjoyed another outstanding season. IC, however, is special. The Knights have allowed 74 points all season while averaging 52.9. Of the 74 allowed, 49 were in a 63-49 Week 2 victory over St. Laurence, Lemont’s opponent in the Class 6A quarterfinals.

So what is Wilmington to do? The Wildcats have Owen Weaver, one of the best Class 3A backs in the state and in the discussion of the most productive backs regardless of class.

If Wilmington, with Weaver carrying the load, can move the chains consistently and keep the IC offense on the

“Once I got to that level in my junior year, I really realized what it took to become a state champion. He came at it 35 years ago with the same or very similar passion that I did. So to share that, it’s really special. It was definitely the most memorable day of my life.”

Much as Soren improved from 11th as a junior to state champion as a senior, Jim went from ninth in 1980 to first place the next year.

“In my junior year, I came up a little short, much like Soren did,” Jim Knudsen said. “I took second in track (3,200 run) my junior year, while he got third (1,600 run). In my senior year, I made the commitment, just like he did. We went right into our summer training and kept our fitness level high. And we both stayed injury-free for the first time.

“He’s a great student of the sport, so there’s not much that I ever had to say to him since he’s on top of his game. He believes that he’s going to be successful and accomplish great things. I thought about him winning a state title, but the experience was completely surreal. Athletically, I knew he had what it would take, but in his sophomore year his work ethic kicked in and I saw the passion in his eyes and the mindset he had, and that’s when I knew.”

sideline, that would be an excellent start. Regardless, it is a huge challenge.

Lemont at St. Laurence: St. Laurence, as noted, scored 49 points against IC Catholic and lost, 63-49. The Vikings erased a 40-28 deficit with less than five minutes remaining last week and ousted Crete-Monee, 41-40. They can score points.

However, Lemont has played well defensively all season, and the Indians’ offense also has weapons, led by quarterback Spencer Nagel and multiple solid running backs. There may be some points scored in this one, but the matchup of Lemont’s offense against St. Laurence’s defense favors the Indians.

Maine South at Lincoln-Way East:

Maine South beat Barrington last week, 42-27, to avenge an earlier loss and is on the upswing at the perfect time. Both teams boast productive offenses, but East has more to offer defensively, and that and the home field could help swing the outcome in the Griffins’ favor.

MINOOKA – Three of the four girls volleyball teams that will be competing in this weekend’s IHSA Class 4A finals in Normal had not yet won a trophy in the sport and only combined for four state appearances prior to this year, with the last visit in 2001.

Meanwhile, the other entrant has made 25 previous state trips, collected 22 trophies, played in 17 title matches and captured 14 championships.

So while Minooka, Stevenson and Niles West will no doubt be thrilled with any trophy that they pick up at Illinois State University’s Redbird Arena, perennial power Mother McAuley is clearly focused on adding another one of the biggest trophies to its state-record collection.

And as if history wasn’t decisively on their side, the Mighty Macs also easily possess the best record in the field, at 38-1, which features a current 30-match winning streak.

With McAuley recognized as the clear team to beat, coach Carrie Prosek’s 34-6 Minooka squad, which features just four seniors on its 15-player roster, really doesn’t have very much pressure on it as it gets ready to meet 32-7 Stevenson in Friday’s 7 p.m. semifinals.

“We’ve already made history but we’d like to set the bar high for future teams,” junior Olivia Klank said.

“Knowing that 11 of us will be coming back next year, hopefully we’ll be able to get back to the Redbird Arena. So we want to set the bar high and push it higher next year.

“Fifteen girls is a lot, but I feel the bigger the group, the bigger the heart.

Every single one of us, no matter whether we play much or not, has a big heart and is just as good as the best player.

Having skill gets you far but having your best friend by your side gets you so much further.”

With Minooka already advancing one step further than its previous-best quarterfinal team from 1999, it’s now just a matter of determining what place their initial trophy will be.

“Making the final four for the first time and bringing that home to our community just solidifies everything that we’ve worked for all season,” junior Alli Papesh said. “Last year we were disappointed with how we finished and told ourselves we wouldn’t feel that way this year.

“Now that we’ve reached our goals, we’ve made another set of goals and we’ll try to accomplish those. No matter how the season ends, we’re going to

Although the Indians felt they could have performed better in Saturday’s supersectional win, they still did well enough to prevent Normal Community from earning a third-straight trophy.

“Even though we didn’t play our best, we still won,” junior Rocky Perinar said. “Now we can push this week in practice and get better. With us becoming the first team to get a trophy, it makes it so much sweeter and just gives us a lot of hope and confidence in ourselves.

“Since we’re all close to the same age, it’s really brought us closer together. We have each other’s backs and have a lot of confidence in ourselves no matter who comes on the court. The

wins have made it so much better, and we’re proud of each person that’s next to us.”

One of the team’s biggest strengths has been its close bond. Since so many of the players know one another well, it’s been easier for them to work together to reach this goal.

“This is the best that we’ve ever done as a team, so we’re all excited,” senior Matti Ziech said. “We’ve really come together as a family and I’ve never felt like this with another group of girls before since we’re so close-knit. It’s crazy that we’ve been able to get this far.

“We came into the season hoping that we could do this but not really expecting it. We set both personal and team goals and throughout the season we worked together and pushed each other to make one another better. And we’ve always

been there for each other.”

Win or lose this weekend, it’s been a special season for Minooka’s players, who have laid a great foundation that the large group of returning players should benefit from next year.

“We’re really excited,” junior Makenna Jacoby said. “I’ve played with these girls through club since I was about 10 so I’m excited because we’re all in this together and are a big part of this. The thing we focused most on was coming together and playing for each other.

“We just know each other better than anybody on and off the court. We know each other’s weaknesses and strengths so we can push each other in practice more, which makes us better as a team.

Everyone knows their role on the team, and we’re proud of everybody.”

Cubs’ Theo Epstein voted TSN’s MLB executive of the year

The Associated Press SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Theo Epstein is rising to a new reality.

“For the last few years I’ve had a semi-recurring dream, maybe five or six times, where I’ve woken up, wow, we just won the World Series with the Cubs. That’s unbelievable,” he recalled Monday night.

“And then about 10 seconds later I realize it was just a dream, and then the rest of the day stinks, right? It’s a pretty great feeling and then back to reality. The last five days or whatever it’s been, I’ve been waking up with the same realization and then it takes a couple seconds. Wow! It really happened!”

Days after the team he designed ended a long championship drought, Epstein was voted The Sporting News Major League Baseball Executive of the Year for revitalizing the Cubs.

Balloting by 56 big league executives took place before the postseason.

The Cubs led the majors with 103 wins during the regular season, then beat Cleveland in a seven-game World Series last week for their first title since 1908.

“During the parade I kept telling my wife we need to go home to change some diapers and do some laundry, because this is not real life,” he said.

“We’ve got to get our feet back on the ground.”

Epstein was presented with the award at the start of the annual general managers meeting. He received 13 votes, followed by Cleveland’s Chris Antonetti (nine), the New York Yankees’ Brian Cashman (eight), Texas’ Jon Daniels (seven), Cleveland’s Mike Chernoff and Washington’s Mike Rizzo (three each), and Baltimore’s Dan Duquette and the Cubs’ Jed Hoyer (two apiece).

Now 42, Epstein was the youngest general manager in major league history when Boston hired him at age 28 in November 2002. He helped the Red Sox win the 2004 World Series, their first title since 1918, and a second championship in 2007.

“Winning at 42 vs. 30, I have a greater appreciation for how hard it is and how many people have to contribute and how lucky you have to get along the way, too,” he said.

Epstein left Boston after the 2011 season to become president of baseball operations with the Cubs, who lost 91 games that year. As he rebuilt the team, the Cubs dropped 101 games in 2012, 96 the following year and 89 in 2014. They won 97 games last year to gain a wild card, returning to the playoffs for the first time since 2008 only to get swept by the New York Mets in the NL Championship Series.

The Cubs’ 10th-inning rally in Game 7 was sparked by Albert Almora Jr., the first player drafted under Epstein’s regime, taken sixth overall in 2012. “It does make you hungry just to validate it. When you can win two, I think it means even more,” he said. “We’d love to be the type of organization that national baseball fans think of when you think of October baseball.”

Aroldis Chapman, Fowler, Jason Hammel and Travis Wood have become free agents. Epstein already has been thinking about roster alterations.

“The mix has to change a little bit,” he said. “If you look to just bring back every single component and try to recreate the past, it’s going to change by definition. Group dynamics change.

Human beings change. And so maybe it’s better to change it in some small ways on your terms and some intent behind it rather than just let it come back exactly the same and be stale. ...

We’ll make some smaller changes, but I do have a feeling this nucleus is going to stay intact a lot longer than what we did in Boston.”

Founded in 1886, TSN ended its print edition in 2012 but remains available online.

If Harvick wins in Phoenix, there’s only one spot left in Chase

The Associated Press CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Only an amateur would fill out a Chase for the Sprint Cup championship bracket and not mark Kevin Harvick down for a win at Phoenix.

Harvick has proved he’s just about unbeatable in the desert, and when his playoff chances are on the line, he’s delivered time and again. Harvick has won six of the last nine races at Phoenix, finished second in two of his losses and is guaranteed to show up this weekend with a car capable of demoralizing the field.

Assuming it will take nothing short of a freak incident to keep Harvick out of victory lane, there’s essentially only one spot in the finale up for grabs Sunday.

Problem is, there are five drivers jockeying for that last spot.

And only two points separate three

of those drivers in the standings.

To say there will be some brokenhearted teams on Sunday is an understatement. This year’s version of the Chase has been anticlimactic, sometimes even boring, but this bottleneck in the standings is something to behold.

Reigning series champion Kyle Busch and Joey Logano are tied in the standings. Busch teammate Matt Kenseth is just one point back, and Denny Hamlin sits two points out.

Only one of them is making it to the final four Nov. 20 at Homestead-Miami Speedway if Harvick wins, and the chances of Joe Gibbs Racing getting multiple cars into the championship took a hit on Sunday. The team dominated the regular season and had 50 percent of the drivers in this round of eight.

Once a threat to get all four cars into the finale, JGR is only guaranteed to be represented by Carl Edwards, who used a fast pit stop to win a rain-shortened

race Sunday night at Texas. It was the least optimal outcome for JGR in terms of getting multiple cars into the finale.

Edwards, you see, was last in the playoff standings and that miracle win gave him an automatic berth. Although the rules show two spots still remaining and three JGR drivers hovering at the top of the standings, the threat of a Harvick win at Phoenix has burst JGR’s hopes.

So here’s the situation: Harvick for the win: He’s an eight-time winner at Phoenix and has absolutely owned the place since the track was reconfigured in 2011. He’s also in a situation that Harvick handles quite well – he pretty much has to win or won’t make it to the finale for a third straight year.

Harvick is known as a macho driver brimming with confidence, and he didn’t seem concerned about his positioning headed into Phoenix. His warning? He’ll just go to Phoenix and do

what he always does there.

JGR: The team had hoped to sweep the finale but can’t because Jimmie Johnson earned one of the spots with a win at Martinsville. Best-case scenario is that the team gets two more cars into the final, but that will certainly come with hard internal feelings.

Busch, Kenseth and Hamlin will likely all be racing for themselves on Sunday and teamwork will be an afterthought.

It wouldn’t be a shock if JGR doesn’t get even one more car into the finale because anything can happen on Sunday.

Logano: He won at Talladega in the last round to stave off elimination, and he doesn’t need to win at Phoenix to make it to Homestead. He’s essentially racing the Gibbs cars and trying to finish higher than the three Toyotas so he can snatch a spot on points.

It’ll be a tough battle, but Logano likes sticking it to the team that let him go three years ago.

Minnesota Gophers in the Big Ten hunt

The Associated Press COLUMBUS, Ohio – In unfamiliar territory in November, Minnesota has a piece of the lead in the Big Ten West and faces tough opponents in the final stretch.

Tied with Nebraska and Wisconsin atop the division at 4-2, Minnesota closes out the regular season on the road against the No. 21 Cornhuskers, hosts Northwestern and travels to the No. 7 Badgers.

Minnesota is 7-2 overall and has won four straight, with the losses coming against Penn State and Iowa.

The Gophers have yet to play a ranked team. Still, win out and they’ll be in the Big Ten Championship game for the first time.

The Gophers haven’t even won a share of the Big Ten since 1967. They got close in 2014 when they went into the final game with a chance to go to the championship game, but were denied by Wisconsin.

“We’ve got a great group of seniors, and we felt like if we played well, we could get to November and be in that discussion still,” Minnesota coach Tracy Claeys said Tuesday on the Big Ten coaches’ teleconference.

“It makes it exciting to get into November and you still have a chance,” he said. “I figured with the West teams playing five road games that the winner was probably going to have two losses. We burnt ours up right away in those first two, but our kids have responded and just kept fighting and winning each

week.”

Banged up: Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald noted how the road gets tougher in November when players are getting banged up and worn down. The Wildcats (4-5, 3-3 Big Ten) dropped a 21-7 game against Wisconsin last Saturday, one week after taking Ohio State down to the final drive before losing 24-20.

“Everybody goes to November beat up mentally and physically, and it comes down to which team shows up physically, mentally and executes in November,” Fitzgerald said. “It’s not a sexy time of the year, man, this is grind it out, get it done, and obviously we’re off to a slow start losing our last two.”

He said November is where depth often gets tested because of injuries.

“I think some schools have a few more bullets than maybe other schools, and you have to find a way just to get one more play and find a way to win,” he said.

Badgers tweet: Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst said he was proud of the players who took to Twitter on Monday to post a statement about racial injustices on campus. That message came after the game on Oct. 29 Wisconsin when a fan donned a Halloween costume depicting President Barack Obama with a noose around his neck.

The statement was shared by several black players on the team along with other black student-athletes.

In part, it read: “This incident was yet another blow and reminder that there are people in this community that may not value diverse populations.”

28 COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF RANKINGS Washington takes over playoff position

Washington moved into fourth in the College Football Playoff rankings, putting the four remaining unbeaten teams from the Power Five conferences at the top of the selection committee’s second top 25.

Alabama, Clemson and Michigan still hold the top three spots.

The committee’s first ranking of the season caused a bit of a stir because the unbeaten Huskies were behind Texas A&M last week. The Aggies then lost at Mississippi State to clear up the mini-controversy.

Ohio State is behind Washington, but the Buckeyes still are in fine shape.

Ohio State plays Michigan on Nov. 26 in a game that could decide the Big Ten’s East division.

Louisville moved up a spot to sixth, followed by Wisconsin and Texas A&M. Chaos theory: If chaos is what you crave down the stretch of the college football season, these last few weeks are set to leave you feeling less than satisfied.

For sure, none of the teams in the latest top four are safe. Weird stuff happens. What mitigates the chances for

real chaos is the firewall the top three teams, and to some extent Washington, has created. Alabama (vs. Mississippi State), Clemson (vs. Pitt) and Michigan (at Iowa) all could lose this weekend and still they would be fine to reach the final four if they win out and become conference champions. Washington would likely be in more trouble than the rest with a loss to Southern California on Saturday, but far from out.

For years, the folks who supported and fought for preserving the BCS beat to death one particular point: A playoff would devalue the regular season. Well, they were right, but that’s not such a bad thing. The pressure that comes with a system that is so unforgiving takes some of the drama out of late-season games, but the trade-off makes up for it. More teams are in the mix and more games matter. Losses are not quite so catastrophic, but they do create new possibilities and heighten tension.

And, of course, in the end the playoff produces a truer champion.

The field: Four of these nine teams will almost certainly make the College Football Playoff: Alabama, Clemson, Michigan, Washington, Ohio State, Louisville, Wisconsin, No. 9 Auburn and No. 16 West Virginia.

Joliet’s legendary Chicken-N-Spice

Signature George and Eddy is restaurant’s most popular item THE MYSTERY DINER

JOLIET – Haven’t heard of Chicken-N-Spice in Joliet?

Neither had I despite the fact the Joliet restaurant was established in 1979. My three dinner companions were aghast at my ignorance. Their “You’ve got to try it!” convinced me.

Of course, I had to check out the venue online first. Its website at www.chicken-n-spicejoliet.com said Chicken-N-Spice is known for its “big juicy breast chunks.” These chunks are “all white boneless breast meat,” which are “cut and seasoned” daily in the restaurant.

I love chicken. I’m sold already.

Located at 251 N. Chicago St. in Joliet and dwarfed by the new Joliet Junior College city campus, the exterior of Chicken-N-Spice reminded me an old Arthur Treacher’s Fish & Chips, except the signature color is pink, not blue.

The interior resembles a small fast-food restaurant – one modest counter for placing orders and a small dining area. The difference was the boxes and bags lined up on several of the tables waiting for carryout, which one of my friends told me were probably all George and Eddy orders.

For the uninitiated (me), a George and Eddy is Chicken-NSpice’s signature dish. It consists of three breast chunks, jo-jos (seasoned fries), spicy rice, biscuit and a small drink.

That sounded good, but since everyone else was ordering George and Eddys, I figured I’d try something else.

The menu had the typical fast-food breakfast items: biscuit sandwiches, French toast sticks and pancakes. One variation stood out: chicken-n-gravy with the option of a small, medium or large biscuit.

I could also select bone-in chicken dinners or a variety of sandwiches: Italian beef, Italian sausage, combo (beef and sausage), deep fried Polish sausage, chicken and “BBQ Breast Chunk Sandwich.”

I was not disappointed.

On its website, Chicken-N-Spice calls itself “Home of the Breast Chunk” and “Joliet legend.” One bite and I knew why.

The chunks are amply cut and served up hot, tender, juicy and wrapped in a cliched “melt-inyour-mouth” batter. I passed on the sauces (the chunks don’t need ’em), so I didn’t catch the variety, but my companions swore by the ranch.

The jo-jos are thick-cut fries with just the right amount of spice. The

spicy “dirty” rice had a slight heat, and I enjoyed it second to the chicken. Rounding out the meal was a hot, flaky biscuit with plenty of prepackaged butter and honey.

We also split a side of “Creamy Pepperjack Macaroni-N-Cheese bites,” which my companions said are fairly new on the lineup, and these tasted exactly as described.

Think velvety homemade macaroni and cheese with a bite.

Other “extras” included corn dog nuggets, jalapeno poppers, mozzarella sticks, nachos and livers or gizzards.

Because I’m a kid at heart, I also ordered one, very chocolaty choc-

olate chip cookie, although strawberry shortcake is a dessert option, too. I left full, but not overly so (I did save some of the meal to bring home for later), and felt I received my money’s worth.

I am definitely going back.

32 Single-payer health care covers everyone Dear Dr. K: I’ve heard the term “single-payer health care” a lot in recent years. What does it mean?

Dear Reader: Single-payer health care is a term used to describe a single, unified health care insurance system. It means all of your medical and health care expenses are covered by one organization – the government.

But a single-payer system does not mean the health care professionals (like doctors) and institutions (like hospitals) are owned and run by the organization that pays for care. Most single-payer systems proposed for the U.S. anticipate the health care professionals and institutions would remain in the private sector. It’s like Medicare for seniors: Seniors get their care from private doctors and hospitals, but the single payer (the federal government) pays most of the bills, with patients paying a fraction.

In contrast, the existing health care system in the United States is a multi-payer system. There are several insurance programs funded by the government, such as Medicare and Medicaid. There are many private health insurance companies. Many people have their health expenses covered by more than one insurance company, often a combination of a government program supplemented by a private insurance program.

And, of course, 30 million people have absolutely no health insurance, government or private. That’s true even though the Affordable Care Act (ACA) – informally called Obamacare – has provided insurance to more than 20 million previously uninsured people.

But it never was designed to cover everyone, and it hasn’t.

In a single-payer health care system, a single public or semi-public agency finances health care. In most models of a single-payer system, everyone is covered. This generally includes expenses for doctors, hospitals, long-term care, prescription drugs, dentists

Some people think the U.S. would be better off under a single-payer system. Why? For one thing, we spend a lot of money administering our complex health care system.

Between 20 to 30 percent of every health care dollar goes toward administration. So that money is not available to pay the doctors and hospitals, or to pay for diagnostic tests or medicines.

In countries with single-payer systems, the administrative expenses are much lower.

More of their health care dollar actually pays for what it’s supposed to: health care.

Opponents of a single-payer system are concerned about two things. First, they are worried the total costs of health care might rise. That’s because, they argue, the current multi-payer system encourages competition, and competition drives down costs.

Second, they worry the quality of health care might suffer, because competition also drives improved quality of care. Whether these concerns are valid is the subject of heated debate among health experts.

For us as individuals, would a single-payer system cost us more or less? It surely would require higher taxes, since the government needs the revenue to pay our health expenses. But today most of us get health insurance through our employers, and those expenses would be reduced. Several single-payer proposals calculate taxpayers actually would save money. That could be true, but the devil is in the details.

I have been dating “Ian” for seven months.

We met at work, and my friends convinced me to go out with him. I thought he was a nice guy, just shy. Now that we’ve been dating, I realize that’s not the case.

Ian plays video games a lot. They consume his life. He gets so aggravated he slams buttons and curses incessantly. My nerves can’t handle hearing it. I have anxiety issues, and when he does it, I nearly have a panic attack. When I tell him it’s just a game, he won’t listen.

He also is critical of me. It’s mostly about my weight, but he also tells me I’m horrible and stupid. He complains about the way I play video games, my cooking, etc. Sometimes he loses his temper and snaps at me. He has slapped me a few times.

When you are a bridge declarer, you try to play smoothly and make your contract. Like a race car driver, you try to steer around bumps in the road.

In today’s deal, which bump should South avoid in three no-trump after winning the first trick with dummy’s heart 10?

In the auction, after North opened with a weak two-bid, South sensibly used the artificial two-notrump inquiry. He planned to pass if partner rebid three spades to show a minimum. Here, though, North replied with three no-trump. In the old days, this guaranteed a suit headed by the ace-king-queen. However, as that happened so rarely, nowadays this rebid indicates a maximum with a suit headed by at least the acequeen-jack. (Note that four spades fails if East leads a club, West shifts to a diamond and West gets a club ruff.)

South understandably wanted to score four club tricks, but just in case the break was bad, he carefully covered dummy’s six with his jack. West now made a very sneaky play -- she shifted to the spade 10!

South never believed West could be underleading the king, so he won with dummy’s ace and successfully ran the club eight, underscoring his key play at trick two. Declarer took another club finesse, then cashed his remaining winners in that suit and hearts. Finally, he led the heart jack and was lucky that he had to score his diamond king.
