JJC board OKs president’s contract

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Junior College board approved the contract for President Judy Mitchell.

The contract approved at Monday’s meeting is retroactive to Sept. 1 and will continue to Sept. 1, 2019.

Mitchell will earn an annual base salary of $220,000, according to the contract.

The board approved Mitchell as president on Sept. 13 after a period where she served as the interim lead- Judy Mitchell er.

Board Chairman Robert Wunderlich thanked Mitchell and the staff for their work.

“The morale is going through the sky,” he said.

Tax levy resolution

Trustees also voted, 5-2, to adopt a tentative tax levy resolution that will not reduce the debt service levy this year – or not rebate back to taxpayers the interest earned on general obligation bonds that

Wunderlich stated JJC has cut more than $2 million from its operating budget in over four years, sought additional grants to offset operational costs, restricted travel, closed its Small Business Development Center and not filled vacant positions. The college has also fronted MAP funds totaling more than $1 million for more than 1,000 students for two consecutive semesters.

Voting against Monday’s resolution were Trustees Alicia Morales and Patricia Deiters.

Morales said JJC raised student tuition this year and putting a burden on taxpayers after approving that increase is something the college should delay.

“Honestly, I think we need to look in our budget for additional resources before we start going to the taxpayers,” she said.

Deiters said the college should continue its rebate to taxpayers. She also said people need to persuade lawmakers to pass a state budget.

“I think that would alleviate the majority of the problems that the junior colleges are facing in this state,” she said.

District 202 officials OK three-year contract with support staff union

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield School District 202 board on Monday night unanimously approved a three-year contract with the Plainfield Association of Support Staff union.

With the new contract, most support staff this year will receive raises averaging 2.5 percent. The pay increases will be implemented no later than Dec. 23.

In years two and three most support staff will receive, on average, 2.25 percent raises.

District 202 Director of Community Relations Tom Hernandez said employees are assigned into different categories so raises may vary from one category to the next.

Student Trustee Kathleen Duong was absent from the meeting.

By not reducing the debt service levy this year, that will mean an increase on the average homeowner’s tax bill by just under $5, according to a JJC news release.

The resolution was adopted because of the impact of the state budget crisis and subsequent lack of community college funding, the news release stated.

This marks the first time trustees have not reduced the debt service levy since 2009, according to the news release. In the past seven years, the college reduced the debt service levy by a total of $12.8 million to taxpayers.

“I hope that this serves as a call-toaction to those who live in our [JJC District 525],” Wunderlich stated in a news release. “We need to continue advocating for our local resources. We want our taxpayers to understand how the state’s continued fiscal crisis impacts local resources like the college.”

PASS and the district agreed to a retroactive one-year contract in December, which expired in June. PASS members had rallied at the time for better pay and benefits.

The new deal will be retroactive to July 1, 2016, meaning it will expire summer 2019.

“We’re happy the contract passed,” Hernandez said after the meeting. “Support staff does a great job for us.”

With the contract, personnel costs this year will go down for the district. They will then rise in years two and three.

District administration estimates its cost of total salaries and benefits for PASS employees will drop by about $1.86 million because of custodial staff reductions made in the spring.

PASS-related salaries and benefits are expected to increase by about $781,000 in 2017-18 and by about $1.013 million in 201819.

PASS approved the contract in an Oct. 26 vote. Of the PASS union members who voted on the contract, 73 percent – 568 members – voted yes and 27 percent – 213 members – voted no.

According to the district, PASS this year represents about 970 noncertified staff including custodians, grounds and maintenance workers, special education teaching assistants and most secretaries.

“We are happy we were able to work out a mutually beneficial agreement with our support staff, who work very hard every day to keep our facilities in excellent condition,” District 202 Superintendent Dr. Lane Abrell said.

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Come Wednesday morning, Americans likely will know who the country’s 45th president is going to be.

It remains to be seen which candidates will win key battleground states and who ultimately will be elected to the presidency. But one thing is for sure: Voter turnout is historically highest in presidential election years.

Anecdotally, that trend appears to be repeating itself in 2016 in Will County, area officials said.

Julie Victa, an assistant professor of political science at the University of St. Francis in Joliet, thinks that because of the contention of the discourse between Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, turnout certainly will be

higher this year than four years ago.

“Especially in battleground states,” Victa said. “And turnout is always higher in presiden-

tial elections.”

Down ballot races will be impacted, she said, noting it will be interesting to see whether state Senate races are won by Democrats or Republicans and whether Democrats are able to take U.S. Senate control from the Republicans.

Still, people could make a better effort to vote in nonpresidential election years, she said.

“The unfortunate thing is not enough people turn out for other elections,” Victa said. “And turnout for primaries tends to be quite low. There are

Rialto seeks $500,000 from Joliet Management projects future deficits

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Rialto Square Theatre is asking the city of Joliet for $500,000 in 2017, a lower request than this year but one facing an uncertain response from the City Council.

Rialto officials may find out Thursday whether the council is willing to continue providing money after a year when the city and theater have been at odds at times.

Theater representatives expect to make a presentation to the council when it meets at 5:30 p.m. Thursday for its first workshop meeting on the 2017 budget.

Rialto management has sent city officials a business plan that projects the theater will become less dependent on the city for money in future years but still could need as much as $290,000 in 2021 to cover operating losses.

“We’re saying that need will continue to exist. We’re not saying the city would be the only entity to fund that,” said Steve Peters, president of VenuWorks.

VenuWorks was hired in September to take over management of the Rialto after the theater parted ways with its former general manager and decided to contract with an outside firm to run operations.

VenuWorks has been working for $1 a month but expects to start getting paid management fees in 2017 starting at $135,250 a year, according to the business plan. Those fees would rise to $152,225 in 2021.

Former general manager Randy Green was making $142,000 a year before he left in March after reaching a separation agreement with the Rialto.

Green left at a time when the Rialto had fallen behind on payroll taxes, creating a financial crisis that forced the city to advance money out of a $600,000 annual subsidy to make sure entertainers got paid for performances.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said Monday that he does not know what the full City Council will want to do about Rialto spending but expressed skepticism.

“I think the city made it clear since last spring that the days of just writ-

ing checks are over,” O’Dekirk said.

“I think we were pretty clear that the days of sending money year after year without it being earmarked for anything are over.”

The business plan outlines future expenses and expected sources of revenues. But it does not specify how city funds will be used.

It also includes an expected $75,000 in “Other Governmental Support,” although Peters said the source of that money has not been identified.

Veterans Day ceremony to return to Will County Courthouse The HERALD–NEWS JOLIET – Plans for the annual Veterans Day ceremony at the Will County Courthouse have been announced.

The program will start at 10 a.m.

Friday at the Eternal Flame located at the front of the courthouse facing Jefferson Street.

The event will begin with music

performed by the Joliet American Legion Band. The national anthem will be sung by Elaine Swearingen.

Speakers will include World War II Navy veteran Betty Peterson and Stone City Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2199 Commander Lou Vargas.

Public officials also will be introduced at the ceremony.

The Rev. Ron Neitzke, pastor of St.

Mary Nativity and Holy Cross churches in Joliet, will lead the prayer. Steve Brandy, news director at WJOL-AM, will be master of ceremonies. Ceremony coordinator Don Walden will make welcoming remarks.

The ceremony will include the placing of a wreath at the Eternal Flame.

American Legion Post 1080 will conduct a gun salute. The Joliet American

Legion Band will play taps and conclude the ceremony with “Stars and Stripes Forever.”

The event is hosted by American Legion Post 1080 in Joliet, Stone City VFW Post 2199 in Joliet, American Legion Harwood Post 5 in Joliet, VFW Cantigny Post 367 in Joliet, and Buffalo Soldiers American Legion Post 241 in Joliet.

Trial to begin in beating death of disabled man

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Jurors will begin hearing testimony Tuesday against a Joliet man accused of killing a mentally disabled relative in 2013.

Francis P. Zabala, 55, is charged with murder in the death of Robert Meredith Jr. On Sept. 22, 2013, Meredith, 49, urinated on the floor of the home where both he and Zabala lived in the 3800 block of Bergstrom Street. According to Francis prosecutors, when Mer- P. Zabala edith wasn’t cleaning it to his brother-in-law’s liking, Zabala lost his temper and hit him repeatedly with a stick.

Meredith was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, where he died from an apparent heart attack, but hospital staff noticed extensive bruising on his back, police said. An autopsy showed Meredith’s death was caused by blunt-force injuries. Zabala was interviewed by detectives and told them he “lost it,” police said.

Prosecutors are expected to call Janice Zabala to testify against her husband. The couple is in divorce proceedings, but defense attorney Neil Patel told Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak that some conversations in their 20year marriage are exempt from inquiry under “spousal privilege.”

Bertani-Tomczak has ruled autopsy photos are admissible evidence, but suggested prosecutors select a few needed to prove their case instead of showing the same things from different angles.

Shots were reported at 7:41 p.m.

in the 500 block of Grant Avenue in Joliet, Joliet Police Department Chief Brian Benton said.

Police located three shell casings in the street between two parked cars, but no damage was found, Benton said.

BOLINGBROOK – A Bolingbrook man was arrested Saturday on attempted murder charges after allegedly stabbing three people in a house on Halloween.

The incident occurred about 9:45 p.m.

Oct. 31 in the 500 block of Monroe Road in Bolingbrook, Bolingbrook Police Department Lt. Anthony Co- Marquis S. Davis lumbus said.

“Officers were dispatched for a report of a stolen vehicle. While en route they received information about a home invasion at that location and several victims had been stabbed,” Columbus said.

Three residents were home when “offenders” including Marquis S. Davis, 22, of the 500 block of Jill Street, forced their way inside, Columbus said. The intruders then searched the house and attacked the victims

before fleeing in one of their cars.

The residents – a 25-year-old man, a 31-year-old man and a 49-year-old man – were all taken to Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital. They are all expected to survive their wounds, Columbus said. Police found the 2013 Chevrolet that had been stolen later that night.

“There was some familiarity between Davis and the victims. It was not a random event,” Columbus said.

Davis was taken into custody Saturday by Aurora police. He was turned over to Bolingbrook police and booked into the Will County Jail on charges of attempted murder, home invasion and residential burglary. He is being held on $1 million bond.

Records from the Illinois Department of Corrections show Davis was on parole for aggravated robbery and burglary at the time of the stabbings.

Columbus said Monday that the investigation into the home invasion remained active, and police were seeking other “persons of interest.”

Louis Road in Joliet, was arrested by sheriff’s police Thursday on charges of domestic battery, forgery and obstructing justice.

• Francisco J. Galindo, 28, of the 200 block of Hampdon Court in Bolingbrook, was arrested by Bolingbrook police Friday on charges of manufacture or delivery of drugs, drug possession with intent to sell and drug possession.

• Raymond M. Kolofa, 31, of the 1800 block of Arbor Lane in Crest Hill, was arrested by sheriff’s police Friday on a charge of drug possession.

• Jonathon Lopez-Garcia, 31, of the 400 block of Henderson Avenue in Joliet, was arrested by Bolingbrook police Friday on a charge of drug possession.

Victa teaches political science, so the election is automatically part of her classes. She also teaches a presidency course in presidential election years.

In the 2016 election cycle, she’s seen supporters of former presidential candidate and independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders the most engaged in classroom discussion.

But her classes include a wide range of voters. She teaches supporters of both major parties in the presidential election.

Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots said she’s been pleased with the early voting turnout, which should help decrease lines on Election Day. Illinois counties were mandated to open early voting 40 days before the general election day. It started Sept. 29.

The clerk’s office, since March, has done everything it can to keep voters informed, Schultz Voots said, and has encouraged residents to vote by mail.

Notice of vote-by-mail was added to the back of voter cards distributed June 1.

Vote-by-mail ended Thursday.

On the topic of early voting, Victa said anything that increases the ability for people to vote is a good thing.

After all, she said, we do live in a democracy.

“It’s really kind of inspiring when you think about it,” Victa said. “People waiting in line to do their civic duty – you see really young people and elderly people. That’s just remarkable.”

It took an hour – from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Monday – to get in and out of voting at the Fountaindale Public Library in Bolingbrook. The site is both an early voting and grace period voting location, which means people who were unable to register to vote or change their address before the close of registration – 28 days before an election – also are served.

Joseph “Pino” Baietti, age 91, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 4, 2016, with his loving family by his side.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Caterina (Chiodelli) Baietti; two children, Maristella “Stella” Baietti, an elementary/special education teacher with a BA, and Dr. John Joseph Baietti, D.C. (David Morales); one granddaughter, Andrea Marie Martinez (Ismael Vela Jr.); and one great-grandson, Xavier Robert Martinez. Also survived by numerous relatives in Italy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Emanuele and Giuseppina (Perini) Baietti; one son, Robert Peter Baietti; one sister, Maria; two brothers, Daniele and Arturo.

Joseph was born in Pozzaglio ed Uniti, Italy in 1925. He proudly served in the Italian military before sailing to America with his wife and 1-year-old daughter on the Andrea Doria in 1956. Settled in Mayville, Wisconsin where he worked in cheese manufacturing for 15 years and opened an Italian restaurant. Later came to Joliet, where Joseph worked for Mancuso Cheese and then for the Joliet Public Schools until retirement.

Joseph was an avid horse lover and enjoyed spending time at the track. In his younger years he enjoyed fishing and hunting and playing cards. He loved to sing and had a wonderful voice. He worked hard to take care of his family. He never missed a day of work.

He was a devoted and loving family man with a sense of humor.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church, 710 W Marion in Joliet.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. Interment Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Sister Therese was a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate (Joliet) for 76 years. Before entering religious life, Sister Therese was a member of St. Rita of Cascia Parish in Chicago, Illinois, and attended the parish grade school. She graduated from St. Francis Academy (Joliet Catholic Academy) in Joliet, Illinois, and received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from the College of St. Francis (University of St. Francis) in Joliet.

Sister Therese (Sister M. Denis) began her ministry in the field of education in 1943 at St. Raymond School in Joliet. She ministered in the field of education for fifty years, teaching grades 1 to 4 in schools throughout Illinois and Ohio including 33 years in Catholic Grade schools in the Diocese of Joliet. In 1992 she joined the Senior Companion Program under the auspices of Catholic Charities for the Diocese of Joliet, a ministry that she participated in until 2006. She enjoyed visiting the elderly in their homes and sharing stories with them.

In 2008 Sister began her ministry of Community Service at Guardian Angel Home and then at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home where she resided until her death.

The wake for Sister Therese will be at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, 1201 Wyoming Avenue, Joliet, IL, (Wyoming and Rt. 30) on Wednesday, November 9, 2016, from 2:00 to 6:45 p.m., with a Prayer Service at 4:45 p.m. and Mass of Christian Burial at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Procession will leave from Our Lady of Angels on Thursday morning, November 10, 2016, at 9:00 a.m. The Interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery in Romeoville, IL. Bienville “Benny” Jones Sr., was born on August 14, 1928 in Brookhaven, MS to the union of William Jones and Binetta Smith. He departed this life on Monday, October 31, 2016.

Bienville worked as a laborer for Brown & Lambert until he retired in 1990. He loved fishing, hunting and gardening. He also loved sitting on his porch with his dog, Lightening, waving at people passing by. He loved German shepherds and Rottweilers.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellis Marie; his parents, William Jones and Binetta Ashford; his sisters, Ida Riddle, Rowena Vaughn, Katie Ruth Johnson; and son, William Henry.

Janet Reno, former U.S. attorney general, dies at age 78

MIAMI – Janet Reno, who was the first woman to serve as U.S. attorney general but also became the epicenter of multiple political storms during the Clinton administration, died early Monday. She was 78.

Reno died from complications of Parkinson’s disease, her goddaughter Gabrielle D’Alemberte said, adding that Reno spent her final days at home in Miami surrounded by family and friends.

A former Miami prosecutor who famously told reporters, “I don’t do spin,” Reno served nearly eight years as attorney general under President Bill Clinton, the longest stint in a century.

Her sister, Maggy Reno Hurchalla, told The Associated Press that Clinton called over the weekend said to “tell Janet I love her” and that many others from her career visited or called, including former Florida governor and Sen. Bob Graham. Bill and Hillary Clinton issued a statement praising Reno’s tenure and President Barack Obama called her “an American original” in his own statement.

“When Janet Reno arrived in Washington in 1993, the city had never seen anyone like her before – and hasn’t since,” Obama said. “Her legacy lives on in a generation of lawyers she inspired, the ordinary lives she touched, and a nation that is more just.”

One of the administration’s most recognizable and polarizing figures, Reno faced criticism early on for the deadly raid on the Branch Davidian compound at Waco, Texas, where sect leader David Koresh and some 80 followers perished.

She was known for deliberating slowly, publicly and in a blunt manner.

Reno frequently said “the buck stops with me,” borrowing the mantra from President Harry S. Truman.

After Waco, Reno figured into some of the Clinton administration’s controversies and scandals, including Whitewater, Filegate, bungling at the FBI laboratory, Monica Lewinsky, alleged Chinese nuclear spying and questionable campaign financing in the 1996 Clinton-Gore re-election.

In the spring of 2000, Reno enraged her hometown’s Cuban-American community when she authorized the armed seizure of 5-year-old Elian Gonzalez. He was taken from the Little Havana home of his Miami relatives so he could be returned to his father in Cuba.

“Unabomber” Theodore Kaczynski that same year and investigated the 1993 terrorist attack on New York’s World Trade Center. The department also filed a major antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft Corp. and Reno was a strong advocate for protecting abortion clinics from violence.

Attorney General Loretta Lynch praised Reno’s integrity, and called her a trailblazer and “one of the most effective, decisive and well-respected leaders” in Justice Department history.

Lynch said Reno applied one test: “to do what the law and the facts required.

She accepted the results of that test regardless of which way the political winds were blowing.”

After leaving Washington, Reno returned to Florida and ran unsuccessfully for Florida governor in 2002 but lost in a Democratic primary marred by voting problems.

Born July 21, 1938, Janet Wood Reno was the daughter of two newspaper reporters and the eldest of four siblings.

She grew up on the edge of the Everglades in a cypress and brick homestead built by her mother and returned there after leaving Washington.

After graduating from Cornell University with a degree in chemistry, Reno became one of 16 women in Harvard Law School’s Class of 1963. Reno, who stood over 6 feet tall, later said she wanted to become a lawyer “because I didn’t want people to tell me what to do.”

In 1993, Clinton tapped her as the first woman to lead the Justice Department after his first two choices – also women – were withdrawn because both

had hired illegal immigrants as nannies. Reno was 54.

“It’s an extraordinary experience, and I hope I do the women of America proud,” Reno said after she won confirmation.

A little more than a month of taking office, however, Reno became embroiled in controversy with the raid on the Branch Davidian compound near Waco.

On Feb. 28, 1993, before Reno was confirmed as attorney general, U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents executing a search warrant made a surprise raid on the compound.

Gunfire erupted, killing four agents and six members of the religious sect.

That led to a 51-day standoff, ending April 19, 1993, when the complex caught fire and burned to the ground.

The government claimed the Davidians committed suicide. Survivors said the blaze was started by tear gas rounds fired into the compound by government tanks, and that agents shot at some who tried to flee. Reno had authorized the use of the tear gas to end the standoff and later called the day the worst of her life.

“It was a dangerous situation,” Reno said during a 2005 lecture at Duke University. “The tragedy is that we will never know what was the right thing to do.”

In 1995 Reno was diagnosed with Parkinson’s after noticing a trembling in her left hand. She said from the beginning that the diagnosis wouldn’t impair her job performance. And critics – both Republicans and Democrats – didn’t give her a pass because of it.

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Democrats in Illinois are counting on a big victory by Hillary Clinton to carry them to important wins in the statehouse, U.S. Senate and a pricey contest for comptroller.

Republicans, meanwhile, are angling for more influence in the Democrat-controlled Legislature with the help of wealthy GOP Gov. Bruce Rauner, who has invested unprecedented amounts of money on down-ballot races that will affect what he’s able to achieve in the last two years of his term.

Here’s a guide to Tuesday’s action:

Presidential race

Barring a major upset, Clinton is expected to easily pick up her birth state’s 20 electoral college votes.

Since 2000, Illinois has voted for the Democratic presidential candidate and the state is not considered to be in play this year. And Illinois Republicans have tried to distance themselves from their party’s firebrand candidate, Donald Trump. Rauner won’t even say his name and has made it clear he doesn’t endorse him.

Election officials: Illinois early voting breaks records

CHICAGO – Illinois set a record for the number of voters who went to the polls ahead of Tuesday’s presidential election – even before Monday, the last day of early voting.

Nearly 1.3 million people cast in-person early ballots through Sunday, surpassing turnout in previous presidential contests, according to totals released Monday by the State Board of Elections. Roughly 1 million people cast early in-person ballots in 2008, or about 18 percent of all votes, and nearly 1.2 million people did so in 2012, or roughly 22 percent.

Democrats have supermajorities in the Illinois Legislature – 71-47 in the House and 39-20 in the Senate – but it hasn’t been enough to overrule the governor during an epic 16-month budget standoff that’s led to funding cuts for social services and higher education.

If Democrats can increase their numbers, they can impose their will on Rauner and he’ll have no chance of achieving his proposals to lessen the influence of unions while making the state friendlier to businesses.

While nearly impossible to get majorities in either chamber, Republicans’ goal is to decrease the Democrats’ numbers to give Rauner more bargaining power and make it difficult for his vetoes to be overturned.

Rauner has contributed more than $30 million to GOP campaign committees to accomplish his goals, and Democrats have been forced to keep up. The result? Nearly a dozen legislative contests where the candidates have combined to surpass the $2 million mark in spending money.

Pricey comptroller contest

With each party elbowing the other for every possible edge, the race between Comptroller Leslie Munger and challenger Susana Mendoza has triggered a spending frenzy.

The parties have combined to put more than $9.2 million into the campaigns, with Munger getting $6.8 million of that.

Mayors of Chicago, Cleveland make donations

CHICAGO – The mayors of Chicago and Cleveland said they’re each donating $1,000 to youth baseball organizations in the other’s city after the World Series.

Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel made the announcement Sunday evening. It means that Emanuel will give $1,000 to The Historic League Park in Cleveland and Jackson will give $1,000 to the Playball initiative run by the Chicago Parks Foundation.

The two mayors didn’t make a friendly wager on this year’s World Series. Instead, both said they’re making the donations to honor the sportsmanship and spirit shown by both teams and fans.

LOS ANGELES – A gunman who killed a federal transportation security officer and wounded three other people during a rampage at Los Angeles International Airport was sentenced to life plus 60 years in prison Monday for the attack that crippled the nation’s second-busiest airport and disrupted travel nationwide.

Paul Ciancia, 26, had faced the mandatory life sentence for murdering a federal officer, but prosecutors also sought the additional 60-year term because he showed no remorse and still clings to the beliefs that led to the violence in 2013.

Addressing the court about what led up to the attack, Ciancia said that in 2012 he was sick of life and decided to kill himself.

“I knew exactly how I wanted to die. I was going to take up arms against my own government,” he said.

Police gather to mourn Des Moines sergeant

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – About 1,500 law enforcement officers joined more than 1,000 other mourners Monday at a funeral for a one of two Iowa police officers who were fatally shot just minutes apart last week.

Troves of uniformed officers slowly filed into a West Des Moines church to remember Sgt. Anthony Beminio, the 38-year-old

sergeant who was killed early Wednesday while sitting in his patrol car. His death came minutes after Officer Justin Martin was fatally shot in nearby Urbandale. An Urbandale man has been charged in both killings.

Des Moines Police Chief Dana Wingert told mourners about Beminio’s commitment to his job, other officers and the community. In all his interactions with co-workers and citizens, Wingert said Beminio was authentic and enthusiastic.

“Everything Tony did, he did from the heart,” Wingert said.

Philly transit strike ends, avoiding election impact

PHILADELPHIA – The city’s crippling weeklong transit strike ended early Monday, ensuring that all buses, trolleys and subways will be up and running by Election Day. The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority and the union representing about 4,700 transit workers announced a tentative agreement before daybreak.

By afternoon, limited service was restored on bus and trolley routes, and operating subway trains were making all stops.

SEPTA said it usually takes 24 hours to have all buses, trolleys and subway trains running after a shutdown, but it was on track to be in full service by Tuesday morning.

Clinton, Trump sprint to finish in final appearances The ASSOCIATED PRESS PHILADELPHIA – Closing out a wildly unpredictable White House race, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump blitzed through battleground states Monday in a final bid to energize supporters. Clinton, backed by an emotional appeal from Barack Obama, urged voters to embrace a “hopeful, inclusive, bighearted America,” while Trump vowed to “beat the corrupt system.”

The candidates rallied voters late into the night, a frenzied end to a bitter election year that has laid bare the nation’s deep economic and cultural divides. Clinton and Trump were both nostalgic at times, looking back fondly at a campaign that has put each on the brink of the presidency.

Clinton campaigned with confidence, buoyed by FBI Director James Comey’s announcement Sunday that he would not recommend criminal charges against her following a new email review. The FBI inquiry had sapped a surging Clinton momentum at a crucial moment in the race, though she still heads into Election Day with multiple paths to the 270 Electoral College votes needed to become the nation’s first female president.

Clinton closed her campaign alongside the last two Democrats to occupy the Oval Office, Obama and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, as well as first lady Michelle Obama.

In a nod to the deep divisions that await the next president, Clinton said she’d come to “regret deeply how angry the tone of the campaign became.” She cast the choice facing voters Tuesday as a “test of our time.”

“We know enough about my opponent, we know who he is,” Clinton said, addressing tens

of thousands of people sprawled across Philadelphia’s Independence Mall. “The real question for us is what kind of country we want to be.”

Obama’s address amounted to a valedictory for a president whose popularity has grown in his final year in office.

“America, I’m betting on you one more time,” Obama said. “I am betting that tomorrow you will reject fear and choose hope.”

Trump, who sped through five rallies Monday, recalled the rivals he’d vanquished and how far he’s come since launching his improbable candidacy. As he surveyed the crowd in Scranton, Pennsylvania, he declared, “It’s been a long journey.”

Still, Trump was aggressive to the end, slamming Clinton as the “face of failure.” Having made the new FBI review a centerpiece of his closing case to voters, he argued that the Democrat was being protected by a “totally rigged system.”

“You have one magnificent chance to beat the corrupt system and deliver justice,” Trump said. “Do not let this opportunity slip away.”

The comments were a reminder that Comey’s news, delivered in a letter to lawmakers on Sunday, was a doubled-edged sword for Clinton. While it vindicated her claims that the emails would not yield new evidence, it ensured that a controversy that has dogged her campaign from the start would follow her through Election Day. Across the country, nearly 24 million early ballots were cast under the shadow of Comey’s initial announcement of a new email review.

That number represents about half of the nearly 45 million people who had cast votes by Monday, according to Associated Press data.

In the past 10 years, revenues have increased by 50 percent; net profit margins have averaged a strong 12.5 percent to 13 percent; and the dividend has tripled. That’s very impressive, too. Management’s disciplined

capital allocations have allowed ADP to grow its dividend annually for 40 years. And in the past decade, return on capital has steadily improved by 50 percent, while return on equity has more than doubled. And so should your investment in ADP. Remember to reinvest the $2.12 dividend, which yields 2.36 percent.

Pfizer (PFE-$31.50) is a pfine company, but I’d rather you owned BlackRock Health Sciences Trust (BME-$32.72). A little over a year ago, BME was trading happily between $47 and $49, when several brokerages wrote that high medical costs would force the government to consider price controls on health care spending. The health care sector collapsed, and so did BME – which imploded by 40 percent, to $29. Be mindful that the costs and profits of health care always expand to greet the amount of government money available.

BME is a smallish closed-end health care fund with a $280 million portfolio of health care assets. The company focuses on a broad range of health care issues, including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology companies, makers of medical devices, HMOs, nursing homes, insurers and hospitals.

And the health care industry is

where the big bucks always will be made because it can raise prices outrageously with impunity. Look at what has happened to drug prices! Last year, numerous health care groups contributed an estimated $408 million to members of Congress. Because that’s about $750,000 for each member of Congress, this industry can do whatever it wishes.

Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, who passed away in 2003, said it best while corrupting a line from a Robert Penn Warren character: “Congress was conceived in sin and born in corruption and its members passeth from the stink of the didie to the stench of the shroud.”

Resultantly, BME has enjoyed a five-year annualized return of 16.1 percent, a 10-year annualized return of 14.1 percent and an annualized 12.8 percent return since its initial public offering in 2005. That’s very impressive. Many believe that BME could grow fourfold by the time you guys hang up your tools at 67. And remember to reinvest BME’s 40-cent dividend, though it yields bupkis.

New Potbelly in Plainfield, Grainger Foundation donates to Channahon Parks The HERALD-NEWS

A new Potbelly Sandwich Shop, located at 12750 S. Route 59, situated at the corner of Route 59 and 127th Street in front of Target, is set to open on Tuesday.

Brian Buchalski, the general manager of the new sandwich shop, has been with the brand for over two years, managing a Potbelly shop in Wheaton and assisting with new general managers’ training.

“The community is already expressing excitement about the new shop,” Buchalski said. “Many have been to our nearby locations in Naperville and Joliet to get a bite of our toasted sandwiches, fresh market salads and hand-dipped milkshakes. We are expecting a warm welcome from the Plainfield community as soon as we open.”

To celebrate the launch of the new

location, Potbelly Sandwich Shop held a pre-opening Oven Warming event on Monday. The shop will donate 100 percent of the proceeds from the event to Plainfield North High School. The fundraising celebration occurred between 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for lunch and 5 to 7 p.m. for dinner.

“Whether taking a break from running errands or grabbing lunch with friends, Potbelly gives the community a place to hang out and relax,” Buchalski added.

“There is no doubt we are going to be a welcome addition to the area and we look forward to making Potbelly home for our local friends, students and families in the neighborhood.”

Minooka makes first Final Four appearance at state tournament

cherron@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – It’s a pretty exciting feeling whenever players go into the final week of their season knowing that they’ve already done something for the first time in school history.

That’s the favorable situation that Minooka’s girls volleyball team finds itself in as it prepares for this weekend’s IHSA Class 4A state finals at Illinois State University’s Redbird Arena in Normal.

Coach Carrie Prosek’s Indians have reached the semifinals and are

already assured of their initial state trophy for a top-four finish before facing Stevenson at 7 p.m. Friday.

“We’re pretty confident right now,” senior Brooklyn Bachmann said.

“We’ve been playing some great teams and getting some nice wins. Everyone’s really excited because this is the first time that our school has made it to the final four. Everyone has been working so hard for this since summer, and it’s something our program has wanted to do since I’ve been here.

“Finally it’s paying off four years later and is probably one of the best feelings that I’ve ever had. You have to

give credit to everyone on the team because they all know their role. We’re just so excited since everyone is clicking and everything is meshing together really well. It’s a great atmosphere for the school, and we’re really excited to do it for the community.”

After beating Normal Community in the supersectional, this became Minooka’s second girls volleyball team to reach state, joining the 1999 squad, which lost in the quarterfinals.

“We’ve been taking it one day, game and practice at a time so we’re just focusing on our first game there,” junior Taylor Baranski said. “Want-

ing to play for each other instead of more for yourself really helped us to progress the way that we wanted to this season and helped us to achieve our goals, and one of the big ones was to make it to state.

“In club, we play against a lot of high-level teams and high-level players so for a lot of us, it’s a smooth transition from club to school. We’ve just been kind of feeding off of that to help us progress into this position. It’s hard to believe that we’re making Minooka history. It’s a great experience when

you get to celebrate with a bunch of girls you love and amazing coaches.”

If Minooka can get past Stevenson in the semifinals, it meets the winner of Mother McAuley and Niles West on Saturday at 9 p.m. for the championship.

“We’ve worked so hard and it feels great for the reassurance that everything we did was worth something,” junior Holly Bonde said. “We’re guaranteed two games and either play for the championship or third place.

We’re just so grateful to just be here. We’re definitely going to work hard these next few practices to correct every last detail so we can play our best.

“There will be a lot of good teams there since it’s the best of the best, so we have to come out playing good. The key is to not get down on ourselves, stay up the entire time and never let up at any point. We need to stay determined and remember why we’re there. It feels great that we get to represent our school since we have such a great school and great fans.”

One of Minooka’s biggest strengths is how close the players on its squad are. That’s helped the Indians to a 34-6 record, which includes winning 21 of their last 24 matches.

A chemistry major, Yuede registered a cumulative 3.88 grade-point average after the spring 2016 semester.

On the court, she led the Flyers with 439 digs this season.

“We’re all just really excited,” senior Katie Bulger said. “We made it to the final four and we get to play two matches at state against teams that we didn’t play. Everyone has improved and we all get along really well and that helps. Even on the bench we’re always cheering everyone on and we’re all friends on and off the court and that’s a big part of it, as well.

“As a senior, I’m proud of this team and I’m excited for next year’s team, too. This is my last year, so I’m excited that we were able to get this far. I couldn’t have asked for anything more.”

The task at hand will be difficult, as it should be. If the Indians can get past 32-7 Stevenson, they figure to run into one of the nation’s top-ranked teams in 38-1 Mother McAuley.

“I think that this awesome and I’m really excited for our team,” junior Sammi Hermann said. “We’ve worked so hard at practice to get to where we are at, so I think that we deserve it. This is such a great group of girls and we all get along really well and play great together so we’re excited about the ride.

The circled matchup on the Class 3A calendar Ever since the brackets for the Class 3A state football playoffs were released after the Week 9 games, this north bracket dandy was circled in red on the calendar.

Yes, the Wildcats first had to beat Byron, which last season handed coach Jeff Reents’ team the only loss it has suffered over the past three seasons.

No easy task, but Wilmington got the job done, 38-18, last Saturday night.

The time had arrived to focus squarely on IC Catholic, everyone’s No. 1 team in Class 3A virtually all season.

Kickoff on Saturday is at 5 p.m. at the Plunkett Athletic Complex on West Avenue in Elmhurst.

“We look forward to playing IC,” said Wilmington defensive back Tyler Holcomb, whose 42-yard punt return for a touchdown helped the Wildcats clinch the victory over Byron. “They have a great offense. We want to shut them down.

“Defense wins championships.”

The Wilmington defense has been solid all season, but it is safe to say the Wildcats have not seen anything quite like what the Knights’ offense has to

“IC Catholic has a great program,” Reents acknowledged. “We knew coming into the north bracket in Class 3A that if would be this way.

“We’ve survived one, let’s go get another.”

IC drubbed Paxton-Buckley-Loda, 65-0, last week after opening the playoffs with a 49-8 win over St. Joseph-Ogden, which, you may recall, lost at Wilmington, 48-12, in Week 1. The Knights’ closest call is a 63-49 victory over St. Laurence in Week 2. The Vikings are still alive in Class 6A and, in fact, are hosting Lemont on Saturday.

IC junior quarterback Luke Ricobene has completed 121 of 174 passes for 2,025 yards and 24 touchdowns. He also has run for 431 yards in 38 carries.

Running back Jordan Rowell has rushed for more than 1,500 yards and has caught 30 passes for 515 yards.

Wilmington not only must devise a plan to short-circuit all that firepower, but also would benefit from controlling the ball with its double-wing offense.

The Knights likely will not score their usual glut of points if their offense is standing on the sideline much of the day.

In the victory over Byron’s formidable defensive front, the Wilmington offensive line was more than up to the task. The Wildcats finished with 262 rushing yards in 50 attempts, and that included a 30-yard loss on one bad snap.

Other than the final score, the big news of the night was Owen Weaver breaking the Wilmington school record for touchdowns in a season. Running behind that quality line, he carried 27 times for 188 yards and four of the scores. The other was a defensive touchdown, where he ran 71 yards after stripping the ball from the Byron ball carrier.

“I think coach [Rob] Murphy and the offensive line had a big game going up against a great defensive line that Byron has,” Reents said. “And coach [Barry] Southall [the offensive coordinator] did a great job mixing things up.

He used ‘Weave’ a lot – when you have a great back like him, you have to. But then he mixed in some plays for [quarterback Connor] Dempsay, and then [Josh] Jones got some carries.”

“It was special night for us on the O-line with Owen setting the record for touchdowns in a season,” Wilmington lineman Robert Van Duyne said. “We are blessed to have a great back like Owen. He gives us confidence, knowing he only needs a small hole from us to get yardage. This win tonight, we totally dominated the line of scrimmage.”

Fellow lineman Blake Geiss added, “We block for Owen, and he runs everyone else over. Owen is a great back, and we are proud that he set the school record.

“This is the igniter for our ‘Road to Champaign.’ ” That certainly could be the case, but first, there’s that matter of getting past mighty IC. “As happy as I am with this win, there are some phases where we have to do better against them,” Reents said.

CHICAGO – Jimmy Butler scored 20 points, Taj Gibson had 16 points and 11 rebounds and the Bulls routed the Orlando Magic, 112-80, on Monday night.

Dwyane Wade also scored 16 points and Doug McDermott finished with 11 for the Bulls, who had dropped three straight. Wade went 7 for 12 from the field in 25 minutes, bouncing back nicely from a dismal four-point performance in Saturday’s 111-94 loss at Indiana.

Orlando had won three straight, but it played listless defense as the Bulls pulled away in the third quarter. Aaron Gordon scored 15 points for the Magic, and Evan Fournier added 13 on 6-for-12 shooting.

Butler was a perfect 10 for 10 as the Bulls went 25 for 31 at the free-throw line, compared to 5 for 6 for the Magic. The Bulls have made at least 20 free throws in their last four games and five of their first seven.

The Bulls led by as many as 17 points in the first half, but Gordon had a cutting dunk and Fournier made a 3-pointer to help Orlando close to 63-58 in the third.

The Bulls then ripped off the next 13 points, and the Magic never threatened again. Gibson, Rajon Rondo and Robin Lopez closed the run with three straight layups, making it 76-58 with 6:05 left.

McDermott and Butler each converted a threepoint play to help the Bulls to an 88-63 lead heading into the final period. The Magic shot 4 for 21 in the third and committed six turnovers in the quarter.

Long, Wilson, Goldman among key Bears back on practice field

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com LAKE FOREST – The Bears were as healthy as they have been all season coming out of their Week 9 bye when they returned to Halas Hall for practice Monday.

Kyle Long, Josh Sitton, Eddie Goldman, Eddie Royal, Marquess Wilson and Bryce Callahan all participated in the portion of practice open to the media – the team doesn’t have to issue an injury report until Wednesday.

The only injured Bears player on the roster who remains out is Deiondre’ Hall. Kevin White and Kyle Fuller are on injured reserve.

“I thought with our numbers, we were like a nine-man football team there for a while. There weren’t many people out there. And it was clear that we’re an 11-man team today,” said Long, who missed the second half of the Packers game and the entire Vikings game with a triceps injury.

“There were a lot of people out there.

A lot of people who clearly took advantage of the break from a productive standpoint and did the things they needed to do to get their body right.

Because the list was long in the training room prior to that break. Seems as if a lot of guys were out there.”

For a defense that is playing better, getting Goldman back will be key. The 2015 second-round pick has been out since Week 2 with an ankle injury.

“I just want to add on. I just want to add onto that defensive mentality,” said Goldman, who had never missed

more than a game in a row in his football career. “I just want to get out there, make a couple of plays and celebrate with the team.”

Goldman said he ate a lot of vegetables to keep his weight in check as he rehabbed the injury.

“Eddie’s done a good job being a pro,” John Fox said. “He’s developed that mindset, he’s in good shape that way. Now it’s just getting in football shape.”

Wilson practiced for the first time since undergoing foot surgery in the spring. The Bears now have 21 days to activate him from the physically-unable-to-perform list.

“Excited to be back with the team,” he said. “It’s just been a work in progress and getting back out there, just having fun. I’m happy to be back out there.”

Wilson began the 2014 season on the PUP list with a collarbone injury and missed time last year with a foot injury.

“It’s never easy. It’s disappointing to be hurt and let your teammates down,” Wilson said of another injury to recover from. “It’s just a blessing to be back on the field.”

Royal, who missed the last two games with a toe injury, said he sees a team that can make a run in the second half.

“You look around and you see so many good players, it’s like, why not win out?” he said. “You’ve got to win the first one, but we believe in each other so much that we know that we can turn this thing around.”

The Associated Press Millions of Americans are finding out this month that the price of their health insurance is going up next year – as it did this year, last year, and most of the years before that.

And it’s not just that the price is going up, it’s that it goes up faster than wages and inflation, eating away at our ability to pay for other things we want (beer, televisions, vacations) or need (rent, heat, food).

Does it have to be this way? Why does health care grow so much faster than almost any other spending category so consistently? And will it ever stop?

“At some point it’s not going to be worth it to have less food, less travel in order to spend money on health care,” said Louise Sheiner, a health economist at the Brookings Institution.

“That’s what really stops it.”

Insurance premiums, which reflect spending on medicines, doctor visits, tests and hospital stays, have climbed 213 percent since 1999 for family coverage bought through an employer, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation, which studies health care. Wages, by comparison, have risen 60 percent, while inflation is up 44 percent.

Here’s why the price of health care doesn’t grow like, say, the price of dishwashers or blue jeans – and why that’s unlikely to change anytime soon.

IT’S HARD TO SHOP FOR HEALTH CARE

Insurers and employers have been trying for years to make patients better health care shoppers and force doctors and hospitals to compete on price.

They’ve raised deductibles or out-ofpocket costs on coverage and given tools to patients so they can compare prices and quality.

The idea is that patients become more motivated to price shop when they first have to pay several hundred dollars toward the bill due to a high deductible. Many see this push as a key to curbing health care spending, since insurance tends to hide the full cost of care from the patient.

This can work ... for small stuff, said Renya Spak of the benefits consultant Mercer. Patients will shop if they need an MRI exam on their shoulder. But Spak isn’t convinced it will do much for things such as surgeries, when the insurer or employer will wind up covering much of the bill anyway and the best deal might involve travel away from family.

Consumers also prioritize health care purchases over other buying decisions, especially if they have basics such as food and shelter covered. You’ll have back surgery to alleviate chronic pain before you take that long-awaited trip to Paris.

“What good is a better house if you are too sick to enjoy it?” economist and vice president of the nonprofit Altarum Institute’s Center for Sustainable Health Spending Charles Roehrig said.

TECHNOLOGY DOESN’T HELP

A carmaker can knock down the cost of making a vehicle by replacing auto workers with robots in parts of the assembly line. Treatment advances in health care are geared more toward making something more effective, not cheaper, said Paul Fronstin, an economist with the Employee Benefit Research Institute.

A device maker may come up with a new hip that improves a patient’s quality of life, but it’s likely more expensive and the surgery might require the same number of doctors and nurses or more.

A drugmaker might produce a new treatment that dramatically improves a condition, but it may come with a bill of more than $50,000 in the meantime.

Device and drugmakers have been producing a steady stream of new products for consumers, and insurers that pay the bills have a limited ability to keep prices for those devices and drugs

down.

“Every year, it’s kind of like Christmas, they deliver all this new stuff and of course they deliver it at high prices and insurance covers it,” said Mark Pauly, a health economist with the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.

HOW IT ADDS UP

People with coverage through their employers should expect premium hikes of 5 percent or 6 percent next year, depending on where the employee lives and what adjustments a company makes. That’s double the forecast for inflation next year.

And the rising rates may keep them from getting a raise, too. Employers often pay most of the bill for employee coverage, leaving them less money to increase salaries when rates rise.

Customers shopping on the Affordable Care Act’s public insurance exchanges will see premium hikes of 20 percent or more in many markets, though those increases aren’t just because of rising health care spending.

The exchanges have seen wild price swings in part because insurers are still trying to balance out claims they pay in this relatively new coverage.

All told, health care costs, including the insurance bill and money paid out of pocket, made up 7.8 percent of the average consumer’s total expenses in 2015, up from 5.7 percent in 2006, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Meanwhile, much bigger portions of personal budgets, such as housing, food and transportation, all slipped.

WHEN DOES THIS END?

Health care spending now accounts for more than 17 percent of the U.S. economy. In 1980 it was just half that.

Economists and benefits experts say this trend has to slow at some point, or consumers won’t have enough money left to spend on things unrelated to health care. Some think big, disruptive changes in how we buy and use care may be needed.

That might mean that more insurers could drastically restrict a patient’s doctor choice in order to gain better negotiating leverage over the cost of care, a trend that is growing on the ACA’s exchanges.

Mercer’s Spak thinks employers need to lead, since they cover so many people. She noted that some companies have started contracting directly with big hospital systems for health care, cutting out the insurance middleman.

Sheiner, the Brookings Institution economist, says health spending may slow if drug and device makers stop developing new technology or drugs as quickly. But she thinks health care will keep climbing until people decide they aren’t going to burn any more of their paycheck on it – and we’re not there yet.

“You never say never, but I don’t think we should expect that any time soon,” she said.

Lincoln-Way East poms raise $3,500 for American Cancer Society FRANKFORT – Members of the Lincoln-Way East Griffins Poms program participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K Walk on Oct. 9 in Orland Park.

Although donations were not mandatory, many of the girls raised funds from family or local businesses and others donated from their personal funds. The team raised over $3,500 in donations.

All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society; funds are used for breast cancer research, prevention and early detection programs, and for support for those affected by breast cancer.

But when a person has a symptom, parts of the physical examination can be extremely valuable. In my patient with the tingling sensations, I took a tuning fork and whacked it to make it vibrate. I asked him to close his eyes and to tell me when he felt the vibrations touch his skin. When I placed the tuning fork on his ankles, he said nothing.

During an annual checkup, it is important for adults to get several types of immunizations every so often and a flu shot every year.

I checked my patient’s immunization record and gave him a flu shot.

Then it was time to order tests. The screening tests I prescribe during an annual checkup didn’t turn up any problems in this person, this year, but they are effective in catching (and sometimes curing) diseases in an early stage, such as various types of cancer and heart disease.

I added a blood test for vitamin B12 to the screening tests in my patient. His symptom of tingling, his inability to feel the vibration of the tuning fork and the fact he was a vegan made me suspect his vitamin B12 levels were low – and they sure were. Fortunately, vitamin B12 pills prevented what could have been permanent damage to his spinal cord.

So, I’d advise you not to skip an annual visit to your doctor. You don’t need to have every nook and cranny of your person probed every year. But you do need certain questions asked, screening tests performed and immunizations given.

Dear Dr. K: I’m 73 and in great health. Do I really need to have an annual physical?

Dear Reader: Let’s start by defining “great health.” I would define it as having no known chronic (ongoing) illnesses. However, most people your age have at least one chronic illness, such as high blood pressure. People with chronic illnesses need to be checked out at least once a year, and usually more often.

Even if they don’t have any chronic illnesses, I ask my patients to come in for a checkup every year. That includes asking and answering some questions, a physical examination and some screening tests.

The questions probably are the most important part of an annual checkup. For example, I remember a man in his 50s who had no chronic conditions and exercised every day. He had a healthy diet – he was a vegan. When I asked him whether he had been having any bothersome symptoms, he answered “no,” but hesitated just briefly before saying it. So I pushed him: “Even a mild symptom that’s not very bothersome, but that is something new?”

He replied, “Well, sometimes I get this tingling sensation in my feet. It comes and goes.”

That gave me an idea, and influenced what I did on the physical examination.

There is not a lot of evidence a complete physical examination is valuable. In fact, an analysis of 14 trials that included more than 180,000 patients did not find a yearly general health checkup decreased the risk of death or illness.

I always examine the heart, lungs, abdomen and skin. Even this limited examination is of unproven value. But I’ve discovered irregular heart rhythms, mild asthma and the occasional skin cancer.

Is it wrong to drop off a 1- and a 5-year-old at a senior citizen assisted-living center for their great-grandmother to baby-sit in her room? My niece does this weekly, claiming she’s giving my mother “quality time” with her great-grandchildren.

My mother is in the assisted-living center due to issues my dad is encountering. She’s very independent and, of course, wants to help any of her family whenever she can.

But Mom has an autoimmune disease that flares up with stress or when she gets tired.

I’m concerned about her health and feel my niece is taking advantage of her. Of course, my sister sides with her daughter. They have told me to butt out.

I don’t want to confront the management of the facility because I want Mom to feel as independent as possible there. I don’t want them to not allow her to do something she really wants to do.

This North-South pair did not have that agreement, so South rebid two no-trump to show his club stoppers, wondering if they belonged in no-trump or diamonds.

North, aware of the previous overbid, suddenly passed.

West led his fourth-highest club.

South might have won dummy’s king with his ace to take a diamond finesse, but that would not have worked well here. Instead, declarer won on the board and played a spade to his jack. West made a commendable smooth duck. Now South cashed his top clubs (East throwing a spade) and took the heart finesse (an error here -- a club would have been more successful). East won and worked to strand declarer in the dummy. East cashed the spade ace, then led the heart 10 (in case South had started with nine-doubleton).

South won on the board and cashed the heart ace, under which West carefully played the nine.

East won the next heart and led a spade to partner’s king. West cashed the club jack, then pushed a diamond through the dummy to defeat the contract.
