Evergreen Terrace target date is here, but Joliet still waiting to hear

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Nov. 1 target date for city control of Evergreen Terrace will pass without Joliet taking ownership.

Joliet paid $15 million for Evergreen Terrace in late August 2015 to meet a court-imposed deadline after successfully condemning the housing complex in litigation that started in 2005. But the future of Evergreen Terrace remains tied up in court, and a city attorney said it likely will be weeks before there is any resolution.

It could be longer.

ing complex to Joliet.

The Supreme Court may or may not take the case.

In the meantime, Joliet has asked a federal judge to issue an order that would put Evergreen Terrace in the hands of the city.

“It’s our position that the appeal to the

Supreme Court does not stay the judgment of the district court,” Assistant City Attorney Chris Regis said.

Owners of Evergreen Terrace are arguing differently. Lawyers for both sides are preparing legal briefs to be filed later this month on that and other issues to be decided in the U.S. District Court in Chicago.

Regis said he could not offer a timeline for when a decision will be reached in court, but said, “Weeks is a safe bet.”

City officials at one time set Nov. 1 as a likely date for when Joliet would take over management of Evergreen Terrace.

Before that, the estimate was sometime in October.

And, now?

“We’ll avoid deadlines for the time being,” Regis said.

Carlson Construction announces bids for Water’s Edge

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Carlson Construction is taking bids for subcontracts for the Water’s Edge project in Joliet.

Carlson is the general contractor on the project and issued an announcement of the bids in the aftermath of a protest at Water’s Edge concerning the amount of work going to local, low-income residents. Water’s Edge is a replacement development for the Des Plaines Garden Homes projects, which the Housing Authority of Joliet demolished earlier this year. Construction has started on Water’s Edge, which will be a mixed-income development of 68 units.

Protesters have contended that the Housing Authority and Carlson were not following federal Section 3 requirements aimed at providing opportunities for low-income workers and contractors.

Officials at the authority and Carlson have said they are following Section 3 rules. The company put out an announcement saying it is taking bids until Nov. 10 on the project and noted the project is covered under Section 3 requirements.

“Before we award any additional subcontracts, we are going through this process to make sure we are as inclusive as possible,” said Mark Carlson, one of the owners of the Joliet-based construction company.

The company detailed trades still needed for the project.

They include asphalt paving; concrete paving and curbs with gutters; landscaping; masonry; wall panels, roof trusses and loose lumber; asphalt shingles; insulation; siding; metal doors and frames; overhead sectional doors; flooring; gypsum board; and painting.

Also being bid is closet and utility shelving; mailboxes; toilet, bath and laundry accessories; appliances; cabinet and vanities; cultured marble vanity tops; laminate countertops; and window treatments.

NEW LENOX – Lincoln-Way District 210 officials have released a survey to gather public opinion on future planning for the district. The survey is available on the district’s website under Current Resource and above Lincoln-Way In The News. The web address is shawurl. com/2wl6.

It will be available until Nov. 8.

The survey is the second step in the process of strategic planning facilitated by consultant Robert Madonia, according to a district news release Wednesday.

Six focus areas are covered in the survey: finance, building and grounds; community and public relations; curriculum, assessment and outcomes; human resources; and technology.

District officials said in a news release that after data from the survey is collected, the strategic planning committee will review the results in order to formulate goals.

Western Avenue neighborhood draws hundreds for Halloween

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The trick-or-treat spirit was alive on Western Avenue, as hundreds of kids and their parents went door to door in what for years, if not decades, has been a Halloween destination.

While the number of trick-or-treaters has dwindled in many neighborhoods, residents in this section of the Cathedral Area of Joliet don’t know whether to expect hundreds or thousands on Halloween.

“I usually buy two to three thousand pieces of candy, and I’m out by 5:30 p.m.,” Alicia Tocwish said shortly after 4 p.m., opening time for trick-or -treating in Joliet.

Tocwish herself was in costume, wearing a Day of the Dead mask as she stood at her front steps and handed out candy.

“I love it,” she said. “I get to see all the people and their costumes. Everyone comes out.”

They come from the neighborhood, other parts of Joliet and even other towns.

“Western Avenue. It’s Halloween.

We come every year,” said Kevin Bart of Minooka, who was in a Blue Man costume as he led three children through the neighborhood. “It’s the people, the spirit of Halloween. Not too many people do it anymore.”

Western Avenue of the Cathedral Area is a street of old, leafy trees in autumn splendor before the sun sets, and stately homes, some of which may take on a spooky aura in the dark.

Luke Blaszkow said his house in Romeoville would get 15 to 20 trickor-treaters Monday night. Meanwhile, he was on Western Avenue with his 3-year-old son, Roman, both dressed as Mario Bros. characters.

“I come over here because it’s the coolest trick-or-treating place in the area,” said Blaszkow, who first came three years ago when a friend in the Cathedral Area invited him.

Much of the popularity of Western Avenue is attributed to Rick and Chris Miller, whose nephews first began creating special effects on their front lawn 26 years ago.

This year, Eric was so busy with clients that he almost skipped Western Avenue. But he started getting calls from all kinds of people.

“The mayor called,” Eric said. “It’s getting weird when that starts happening.”

Eric decided he could not let Halloween on Western Avenue pass, so he put on a downsized show, which still included a mad dog growling and

lunging at trick-or-treaters, a wolf man howling at passers-by, jumping vampire ladies and more.

Even 26 years ago, Eric said, he and his brother wanted to do props at their uncle and aunt’s house because there

were so many trick-or-treaters in the neighborhood.

“Back then, they had about three or four hundred trick-or-treaters,” Eric

Cubs fan turns lawn into giant team logo

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – For the last monthand-a-half, Angelo Imbrogno had an idea.

But he wanted to be sure of something before bringing it to life.

When the Chicago Cubs defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers on Oct. 22 to advance to the World Series for the first time since 1945, he decided it was time.

The next morning he printed a Cubs logo on a sheet of paper and began plotting out, to scale, a symmetrical 25-footwide Cubs logo on the front lawn of his Plainfield home.

Imbrogno used twine to mark the logo’s dimensions and 25 cans of spray paint – in blue, red and white – to fill the logo with color. It took about six hours, he said.

“It turned out real nice,” Imbrogno said Monday. “Better than I thought it would.”

A rainstorm in the middle of last week did enough damage to require a detailed touch-up of the logo. Imbrogno said he’s used about 15 more cans of spray paint for touch ups.

Imbrogno is a lifelong Cubs fan, who like much of the team’s fan base has been swept up in Cubs fever by the 2016 team.

“I think people have rallied around this thing not just because it’s the Cubs, but because [manager Joe] Maddon and the guys have brought hope, excitement and inspiration,” Imbrogno said.

He calls Maddon “Doc Maddon” because of how he “works like a surgeon, putting precision and a lot of thought” into his managerial decisions.

Imbrogno is confident the Cubs will win Tuesday night in Cleveland and force Game 7.

“We got the momentum now,” he said. “It’s gonna be a crazy Game 7.”

Asked whether he was concerned or ever doubted the Cubs’ chances af-

ter losing three straight, he referenced Maddon.

“Reporters asked him what he’d tell Cubs fans [when down 3-1 in the series] – Maddon said it’s OK to be nervous,” Imbrogno said.

Imbrogno, who lives in the Walkers Grove neighborhood of Plainfield, has a

bigger and better plan for his lawn if the Cubs win the World Series.

“When we win this thing there’s gonna be an encore,” Imbrogno said.

“I’m putting ideas together right now.”

He said he’s not concerned about his grass dying, adding, “My grass is so strong.”

Habitat for Humanity seeks city approval for ReStore relocation

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Will County Habitat for Humanity wants to relocate its ReStore.

The Joliet City Council on Tuesday will consider a special-use permit for the former Century Tile store at 1395 N. Larkin Ave. The council twice this year rejected special-use permits for a DriveTime used-car dealership at the location amid opposition from two neighborhood groups. But there does not appear to be

any opposition to the ReStore, which Habitat for Humanity uses to raise funds for its philanthropic home-building activities.

Resale stores and used-car dealerships require special-use permits.

The City Council in 2015 approved a special-use permit for a Salvation Army store at the same location. But The Salvation Army later backed out of the plan.

“The Salvation Army was successful in securing what we’re looking for now,” said Tim Brophy, board secre-

tary for Will County Habitat for Humanity. “It’s almost an identical operation.”

The ReStore deals with larger items, Brophy noted.

Habitat for Humanity ReStores sell furniture, appliances, building materials and other items used for home improvement.

The existing store at 200 S. Larkin Ave. opened in August 2011.

Brophy said the lease on that location expires in August 2017, and the proposed location provides a better site

for retail sales.

“Being in town and visible to those who want to donate is important,” Brophy said. “The building is more modern. Access is better.”

The current location had been used as an electrical contractor before the ReStore moved in. The Century Tile store was built in 1984 for retail, having first opened as Frank’s Nursery.

Habitat for Humanity has a tentative agreement to buy the property and could complete the transaction later in November, Brophy said.

’11 murder trial wrapping up

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – It’s all up to a Will County judge whether a man will be found guilty or acquitted next week for the 2011 slaying of a University Park man.

After jurors last week watched a video in which Tommie Crockwell Sr. told a friend how he ambushed 19-year-old Johnny Rouse on the Tommie night of Oct. 26, 2011, in Crockwell Sr. Craig Park, defense attorney Sam Adam asked for Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak to decide the case as a bench trial instead of a jury. Closing arguments were held Monday.

The recording was made by Crockwell Sr.’s longtime friend, Anton Davis, in January 2012 after Davis received money and other considerations from law enforcement and agreed to wear a hidden camera and microphone.

Crockwell Sr. said he’d killed Rouse because the teen had robbed his brother, according to the recording. Crockwell Sr. was driven to the park and waited in the bushes until Rouse walked past. Then Crockwell Sr. shot him once in the back of the head, he said in the recording.

“The defendant goes into the details how Johnny Rouse was killed. Details only the killer would know,” Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Sondra Denmark said. “He said, ‘He went down like spaghetti legs ... dead weight [and] still had his headphones on.’”

Adam said the “rumor mill” spread information about Rouse’s slaying.

Adam said Crockwell Sr. was only taking responsibility because rumors also had linked Tommie Crockwell Jr. to the crime.

“When you hear that tape, it’s terrible – there’s no question about it,” Adam argued. “But Illinois law is exceptionally clear – a defendant cannot be found guilty based on his statement alone and there is no corroborating evidence linking him to this crime.”

Assistant State’s Attorney Peter Wilkes said the law requires “corpus delicti” – proof a crime occurred. “But the identity of the offender is not considered a part of ‘corpus delicti,’” which was proved by the testimony of police officers, a pathologist and Rouse’s father, Wilkes said.

“This isn’t a whodunit. It’s a hedunit,” Wilkes said.

Crockwell Sr., 46, told Ber tani-Tomczak he’d decided not to testify. The judge said she would review the evidence and decide the case next week.

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A man died Monday in a Joliet house fire.

Joliet Deputy Fire Chief Ray Randich said the fire was reported at 12:26 p.m. at a tan two-story home at the corner of West Wallace and South Ottawa streets.

“Crews were informed en route that there may have been someone trapped inside. His caretaker called

911 to report the fire,” Randich said.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze within minutes and were able to contain the damage to the first floor, but were unable to rescue the resident, who was identified by the Will County Coroner’s Office as Benville Jones, 88.

Initial reports do not indicate the fire was suspicious, but police and arson investigators were called out to examine the scene Monday afternoon.

An autopsy for Jones was scheduled for Tuesday.

ROMEOVILLE – A pricey box of toy bricks reported stolen last week from a residence was actually delivered to a neighbor.

According to a news release from the Romeoville Police Department, the package of Lego bricks was reported stolen Oct. 25 from a home in the 600 block of Wild Indigo Drive.

The residents called police about 6:30 p.m. after discovering the box was missing.

The Legos, which were valued at $723.33, were eventually determined to have been delivered to the house next door, Commander John Ferdinardo said.

The neighbor brought the toys the next day to the residents who had ordered them.

MORRIS – The Morris Fire Protection & Ambulance District responded to a house fire Friday, but a trio of Good Samaritans beat them to the scene.

The occupants and their dogs were able to escape the fire, which occurred about 8:30 a.m. Friday at 603 Brentwood Drive, via a second-story window onto the roof.

That’s when three employees of TouchDown Services in Joliet, who were working in the area, came to the rescue.

Casey Knight, Nick Christopher and Dennis Fau had just finished yard work nearby when they saw smoke coming from the home.

“We cut a couple of properties in Morris and we had just finished one when we [saw] smoke coming from the house,” Knight said. “I said, ‘It doesn’t seem right,’ so we went to investigate.”

He said that when they pulled up to the home, they found a couple and the dogs on the roof.

“The fire department wasn’t there

to safety.

“This was a very fast-moving, dangerous fire that could have had a different outcome had the family not be able to self-rescue themselves to the roof and the passerby stopping to rescue them from the roof,” Fire Chief Tracey Steffes stated in a news release.

Knight said the police asked him and his co-workers to move so they wouldn’t be in the way of the firefighters when they arrived, so after waiting for a while to make sure everyone was OK, they went back to work.

According to the news release, the first engine company arrived in less than five minutes and was faced with a heavy amount of fire on the first floor with visible fire venting from windows at the rear of the home.

A tower ladder was ordered to the roof over the seat of the fire to cut a ventilation hole. The fire was brought under control in 15 minutes.

No one was injured and estimated damage is $300,000.

Steffes said the cause of the fire is not suspicious and started in the rear enclosed porch.

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The open enrollment period begins Tuesday for health care plans on the Health Insurance Marketplace.

It’s the first day people can enroll, re-enroll or change a 2017 insurance plan through the marketplace. Coverage can start as soon as Jan. 1, 2017.

In light of this, Presence Health is reminding the public to not ignore basic health care needs when considering the new year ahead.

Many are unaware, Presence Health stated in a news release, that the Affordable Care Act ensures all insured Americans have access to preventive health services, such as an annual physical. Even those with pre-existing conditions are covered for physicals and well-being checkups, with little to no out-of-pocket cost.

Presence Health Regional Chief Medical Officer Gary Lipinski said one of the things the Affordable Care Act did was stop insurance companies from denying customers with pre-existing conditions.

“The Affordable Care Act really helped level the playing field for people,” Lipinski said. “[Prior to the law] some people had resources [to pay for insurance] but were turned down because of pre-existing conditions. That change was huge.”

He said another positive of the Affordable Care Act – this one he experienced personally – was it allowed parents to carry their children on their care plans through the age of 26. He noted through that age, people are still getting out of college and entering new

Lipinski said if families or individuals get set up with basic preventive care by selecting a plan, it could amount to fewer visits to already overcrowded emergency departments.

He said preventive pediatric care has vastly improved over the years, noting that hospitals used to have wards with 30 to 40 children at a time, and now there’s only a handful. Simple vaccines have eliminated a lot of issues, he said.

With open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act beginning Tuesday, this also is a good time for people to review their annual health care enrollment selections, Presence Health stated in the news release. By meeting with a family doctor, people may learn new information about their health that can potentially affect health care coverage elections for the coming year.

PLAINFIELD – Standard & Poor’s recently raised Plainfield District 202’s credit rating and upgraded the district’s financial outlook from “positive” to “stable,” according to a district news release.

S&P rates the credit worthiness of public and private companies, governments and governmental entities.

District 202’s credit rating is now AA-, which is up one step from A+.

District 202 has posted operating surpluses for three consecutive years,

November holiday closings set for Lockport electronic recycling site

JOLIET – State’s Attorney James Glasgow announced in a news release a $10,000 contribution to Guardian Angel Community Services for 24 new steel-frame beds for the Groundwork Emergency Shelter, which serves victims of domestic violence.

The contribution also will cover the cost of a weatherproof portable PA system and folding tables, folding chairs and other equipment that will be used at special events Guardian Angel hosts.

To make the contribution, Glasgow used money seized from criminals engaged in illegal activities and forfeited to the state under the provisions of the Money Laundering Statute.

LOCKPORT – Will County’s recycling partner in Lockport will be closed two days in November in observance of Veterans Day and Thanksgiving weekend, according to a news release from the County Executive’s Office.

The Lockport Public Works, which collects items from 6 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Fridays, will be closed Nov. 11 and Nov. 25. The facility is at 17112 Prime Blvd.

The county’s other recycling partners are not affected by the November holidays.

Marjorie A. (nee McGarry) Kallan, of Joliet, passed away Saturday, October 29, 2016 at the age of 94.

She was born in Joliet on January 23, 1922, to the late Joseph and Alma (nee Carlson) McGarry. Marjorie attended St. Raymond’s Grade School, St. Francis Academy and the College of St. Francis. During World War II, she took the train to the Merchandise Mart where she sold war bonds. Marjorie married U.S. Army veteran Harry C. Kallan on November 9, 1946. After raising her six children, she held various bookkeeping jobs, the last at her son’s law firm. She was an accomplished cook and baker who always had chocolate chips cookies in the freezer. She was a talented seamstress who created countless outfits as well as helping her daughters with their 4-H projects. She played the harp and piano, was an avid reader and loved a good game of solitaire. She enjoyed traveling, having visited Europe, Russia, Canada and much of the United States.

Marjorie is survived by her children, Daniel (Sharon) Kallan, Kathleen (Anthony) Chereck, Jane (Michael) Marra, Anita Wolhrab, Cynthia (the late Michael) Brandt, and David Kallan; her grandchildren, Adam and Savannah Kallan, Bridget (Daniel) Guerndt and Julie Ann Marra, Matthew (Stephanie) and Samuel Wolhrab, Samantha and Katherine Brandt; great-grandchildren, Kathleen Kallan and Daniel Wolhrab, due in December; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

John Patrick Ridges, known to his loving nieces and nephews as “Uncle Johnny Pinecone,” passed away suddenly on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at the age of 46.

He was born April 13, 1970 in Chicago, IL. John graduated from Joseph P. Kennedy High School in Palos Heights, IL in 1991. John moved to Springfield, IL, and worked and lived there until December 2011, when he moved to Joliet, IL to be closer to his family. He was active in his community at Cornerstone Services, took pride in his work, and won a Silver Medal in the Illinois State Special Olympics in 2014. John loved to travel and spent time in western Europe, the Caribbean as well as many U.S. States.

John was a shining light amongst us.

Kirk’s Senate bid weakened after ‘racist’ remark

CHICAGO – Illinois Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, already facing an uphill battle for re-election, is entering the crucial final week before Election Day weakened by comments about his opponent that critics attacked as racist and “beyond reprehensible.”

Two organizations whose endorsements Kirk touted as indicators of his independence withdrew their backing over the weekend, issuing blistering rebukes. Both said they’re now supporting Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth.

Democrats are relying on winning Illinois as they look to regain control of the Senate. The party must pick up four or five seats to do so, depending on whether they retain control of the White House.

Kirk spent the weekend largely outside the public eye. Although he attended some community events, his campaign didn’t advise reporters or the public beforehand – a highly unusual move for any candidate in the waning days of a campaign, but one that allowed him to avoid rehashing the incident in the media. Duckworth had a full campaign schedule, including get-out-thevote events with civil rights icon and U.S. Rep. John Lewis.

Karmeier sworn in as Illinois Supreme Court chief justice

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Supreme Court Justice Lloyd Karmeier was sworn in Monday as the 120th chief justice of the state’s highest court during an installation ceremony in Springfield.

Karmeier, 76, was sworn in by Justice Rita Garman, who served three years as chief justice.

In remarks after being sworn in, Karmeier frequently referenced his family and others who helped him climb the legal ranks.

He noted he was wearing a robe that belonged to former Illinois Supreme Court Justice Byron House.

“No one can stand here, or sit in this position, without being profoundly moved,” he said.

Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk and Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth face off Thursday at the University of Illinois in Springfield in their first televised debate in what’s considered a crucial race that could determine which party controls the Senate.

Kirk, who’s seeking his second term, apologized Friday for mocking Duckworth’s immigrant background and her family’s military service.

Duckworth, a veteran who lost both legs when the helicopter she was co-piloting was shot down in Iraq, said during a debate Thursday that her family has “served this nation in uniform going

back to the Revolution.”

Kirk responded that he’d forgotten the congresswoman’s “parents came all the way from Thailand to serve George Washington.”

Duckworth’s mother is of Chinese descent, born in Thailand. The congresswoman, who was born in Bangkok, says her father first went to Southeast Asia

colleagues, with whom he has served since 2004.

State PARCC tests see more participation, improvement

CHICAGO – More than half of Illinois’ schools have improved in the second year of controversial state PARCC exams, and test participation rose statewide.

This year’s state exam results were made public Monday in the annual Illinois Report Card, an accumulation of data painting a wide picture of schools that includes various factors.

The percentage of students meeting or exceeding Illinois standards in math went from 28.2 percent in 2014-15 to 30.5 percent in 2015-16. The percentage of students meeting or exceeding state standards for English declined from 37.7 percent to 36.2 percent.

State officials believe too many students still go to college unprepared.

Officials unveil high-speed rail passenger station

DWIGHT – A new high-speed passenger rail station has been completed in the northeast Illinois community of Dwight.

The (Kankakee) Daily Journal reported that Illinois Transportation Secretary Randy Blankenhorn announced the completion last week. The new station is among upgrades aimed at improving high-speed service between Chicago and St. Louis.

The 1,500-square-foot building features a glass facade and modern amenities for passengers on Amtrak’s Lincoln Service.

That includes connections to bicycle and pedestrian paths and free Wi-Fi. Construction began last year at the site of a former grain elevator. It’s near a historic train depot in Dwight.

The roughly $3 million project will be paid for through a federal grant.

Human Rights Campaign, a gayrights group, and Americans for Responsible Solutions, a gun-control group led by former U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords, both cited the remarks.

“Senator Kirk’s racist attack on Congresswoman Duckworth is unacceptable and represents a low point, even in this election season,” Americans for Responsible Solutions Executive Director Peter Ambler said.

Human Rights Campaign said it was the first time in the group’s 36-year history that it had reversed an endorsement.

“Attacking someone because of her race and ethnicity is inexcusable for anyone, but especially for a sitting U.S. Senator,” HRC President Chad Griffin said.

Kirk Campaign spokeswoman Eleni Demertzis said Monday Kirk is proud of his leadership in fighting discrimination and gun violence. Kirk has an “F’’ rating from the National Rifle Association and was the second GOP senator to support same-sex marriage.

“The HRC and ARS decisions are unfortunate because they were based on politics instead of reality and further exemplified just how uncomfortable they were in supporting a Republican who was a leader for their efforts,” Demertzis said.

New stations also are expected in in Pontiac, Normal, Carlinville and Alton. Stations in Lincoln and Springfield will be upgraded.

At least 17 dead in Chicago violence over weekend

CHICAGO – At least 17 people were killed and more than 40 injured in Chicago’s street violence over the weekend.

The Chicago Tribune and Sun-Times analyzed police data from Friday afternoon to early Monday, calling it 2016’s deadliest weekend. Chicago police couldn’t confirm that, although a spokesman said their weekend homicide count from midnight Friday through Sunday was 18.

Either way, the toll surpassed the newspapers’ analysis of holiday weekends when violence typically spikes. The Tribune reported that six people were fatally shot over Memorial Day weekend, five over Fourth of July and 13 over Labor Day. The October weekend deaths included seven people younger than 20 years old.

NEW YORK – Zika virus ravages the testes of male mice, sharply reducing sperm counts and fertility, says a study that raises a new specter about its threat to people.

Experiments found testes of infected mice shrank about 90 percent by weight, while their output of useful sperm fell by three-quarters on average, and often more. Now it’s time to find out whether Zika causes similar damage in men, experts said.

Michael Diamond of the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, a senior author of the study, said he suspects that in mice, the damage is permanent.

But experts unconnected with the study agreed that it can’t be assumed that the mouse results apply to people.

Justices sympathetic over school, service dog suit

WASHINGTON – A fluffy white goldendoodle named Wonder waited patiently Monday outside the Supreme Court while the justices inside debated the legal rights of disabled children who want to bring their service dogs to school. The court was considering the case of Ehlena Fry, a 12-yearold Michigan girl with cerebral palsy who was barred from bringing Wonder to class when she started kindergarten in 2009.

The justices were not deciding whether the school district was right or wrong, but whether the Frys should go directly to court to sue the school district instead of first going through administrative proceedings.

Mayor: High-profile trials let Charleston show unity

CHARLESTON, S.C. – As two high-profile cases with racial overtones get underway in Charleston, community leaders are calling on the city to again show unity and refrain from violence.

Jury selection began Monday in the trial of Michael Slager, a former police officer accused of murder in the shooting death of Walter Scott as he ran from a traffic stop in April 2015. If convicted, Slager, who is white and 34 years old, faces 30 years to life imprisonment. Separately, jury selection resumes next week in the federal trial of Dylann Roof, a 22-year-old white man who is on trial for the June 2015 slayings of nine black parishioners during a Bible study at a Charleston church.

Neither shooting was followed by civil unrest – unlike other cities experiencing tensions between black communities and the police departments that patrol them.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Donald Trump plunged into his final-week sprint to Election Day on Monday decidedly on his terms: unleashing a harsh new attack against Democrat Hillary Clinton in Michigan, a state that hasn’t favored a Republican for president in nearly three decades.

His message was welcomed by supporters, but his location frustrated anxious Republicans who fear their nominee is riding his unorthodox political playbook too long – even as Clinton’s developing email problems offer new political opportunity.

“Her election would mire our government and our country in a constitutional crisis that we cannot afford,” Trump declared in Grand Rapids, pointing to the FBI’s renewed examination of Clinton’s email practices as evidence the former secretary of state might face a criminal trial as president.

National polls show a tightening race. But with more than 23 million ballots already cast through early voting, it’s unclear whether Trump has the time or capacity to dramatically improve his standing over the next week in states such as Michigan, where few political professionals in either party expect a Republican victory on Nov. 8.

Clinton, defending herself from the new FBI examination, focused Monday on battleground Ohio, a state Trump’s team concedes he must win.

“There is no case here,” Clinton insisted.

“Most people have decided a long time ago what they think about all this.”

er Robby Mook decried what he called a “blatant double standard” following a CNBC report that the FBI director opposed releasing details about possible Russian interference in the U.S. election because it was too close to Election Day. Comey issued a letter to congressional leaders on Friday about the FBI’s renewed interest in Clinton’s email.

The AP has not confirmed the CNBC report, and the FBI declined to comment on Monday.

Amid the attacks and counterattacks, the race for the White House remains at its core a test of a simple question: Will the conventional rules of modern-day campaigns apply to a 2016 election that has been anything but conventional?

For much of the year, Clinton has pounded the airwaves with advertising, assembled an expansive voter data file and constructed a nationwide political organization that dwarfs her opponent’s.

The Democratic presidential nominee and her allies in a dozen battleground states have more than 4,800 people knocking on doors, making phone calls and otherwise working to support her candidacy. Clinton’s numbers, as reported in recent campaign filings, tripled those of Trump and the national and state Republican parties.

The New York businessman over the past year has largely ignored the key components of recent winning campaigns, depending instead on massive rallies and free media coverage to drive his outsider candidacy.

This week, he’s devoting his most valuable resource – his time – to states where polls suggest he’s trailing Clinton by significant margins.

FBI review involves thousands of new emails

WASHINGTON – The FBI will have to sort through thousands of newly discovered emails in its renewed examination of the practices of Hillary Clinton and her aides, a U.S. official said Monday, raising questions about whether any findings might be released before Election Day. The Justice Department, moving to address concerns over the timing of the revelation of the emails and a potential post-election spillover, said Monday that it would “dedicate all necessary resources” to concluding the review promptly.

The timing matters because Donald Trump has been assailing Clinton ever more vigorously since FBI Director James Comey revealed the existence of the emails in a remarkable and ambiguous letter to Congress last Friday. He said agents would take steps to review the messages, which were found on a computer seized during an unrelated investigation involving the estranged husband of a Clinton aide.

Rep. Anthony Weiner, the disgraced former New York congressman, is being investigated in connection with online communications with a teenage girl. He was separated this year from Huma Abedin, one of Clinton’s closest advisers.

At the White House, spokesman Josh Earnest said he would neither defend nor criticize the timing of Comey’s disclosure. But he also said President Barack Obama does not believe Comey was trying to influence the election, or strategizing to benefit one

“He’s in a tough spot, and he’s the one who will be in a position to defend his actions in the face of significant criticism from a variety of legal experts, including individuals who served in senior Department of Justice positions in administrations that were led by presidents in both parties,” Earnest said.

It was not immediately clear exactly how many emails have been recovered or what significance, if any, they might have. But the U.S. official who spoke to The Associated Press said the trove numbers in the thousands and the FBI, which had a warrant to begin the review, would be focusing on those deemed pertinent to its earlier Clinton

email server investigation. It’s unclear how many emails might be relevant.

In its letter to lawmakers, the department promised to “continue to work closely with the FBI and together dedicate all necessary resources and take appropriate steps as expeditiously as possible.”

The FBI and Justice Department closed that investigation, which examined whether Clinton and her aides had mishandled classified information, without charges in July.

The official who spoke to the AP was not authorized to discuss an ongoing investigation by name and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The fact that another cache of emails potentially important to the in-

vestigation has only recently been discovered raises an immediate question: How could Abedin have been unaware of their existence?

The answer is not yet clear, but it’s possible that either she did not know about the emails on the computer of her estranged husband, forgot about them or for some other reason did not turn them over.

In a sworn deposition taken in June as part of a lawsuit filed by the conservative legal group Judicial Watch, Abedin was asked about what devices she had used to send or receive messages from her account on the clintonemail.com server. As part of the process in 2015 of returning her work-related emails to the State Department, Abedin said she “looked for all the devices that may have any of my State Department” work and provided two laptops and a Blackberry to her lawyers for review.

Abedin made no mention of there being additional devices where her emails might have been saved.

If the FBI finds emails Abedin sent or received through the clintonemail. com server archived on the device recently recovered from her home, that would appear to conflict with what she told the FBI earlier this year.

In an April interview, Abedin told FBI agents that after she left the State Department in 2013, Clinton’s staff transitioned to a different email sever and she “lost most of her old emails as a result.” She said she had only accessed her clintonemail.com account through a web portal and that she “did not have a method for archiving her old emails prior to the transition.”

Iraqi special forces poised on eastern edge of Mosul

BAZWAYA, Iraq – Iraqi special forces stood poised to enter Mosul in an offensive to drive out Islamic State militants after sweeping into the last village on the city’s eastern edge Monday while fending off suicide car bombs without losing a soldier.

Armored vehicles, including Abrams tanks, drew fire from mortars and small arms as they moved on the village of Bazwaya in an assault that began at dawn, while artillery and airstrikes hit IS positions.

By evening, the fighting had stopped and units took up positions less than a mile from Mosul’s eastern border and about 5 miles from the center, two weeks into the offensive to retake Iraq’s

second-largest city.

“We will enter the city of Mosul soon and liberate it from Daesh,” said Brig.

Gen. Haider Fadhil of Iraq’s special forces, using an Arabic acronym for the extremists. He added that more than 20 militants had been killed while his forces suffered only one light injury from a fall.

Three suicide car bombers had tried to stop the advance before the army took control of Bazwaya, but the troops destroyed them, he said. The army said another unit, its 9th Division, had moved toward Mosul and was about 3 miles from its eastern outskirts, the neighborhood of Gogjali.

At one point, a Humvee packed with explosives raced ahead and tried to ram the approaching forces, but Iraqi troops opened fire, blowing it up. Plumes of

smoke rose from IS positions hit by artillery and airstrikes that the army said came from the U.S.-led coalition.

State TV described the operation as a “battle of honor” to liberate the city, which was captured by IS from a superior yet neglected Iraqi force in 2014.

Some residents hung white flags on buildings and windows in a sign they would not resist government troops, said Maj. Salam al-Obeidi, a member of the special forces operation in Bazwaya. He said troops asked villagers to stay in their homes as Iraqi forces moved through the streets – a precaution against possible suicide bombers.

As night fell, broken glass in the streets glistened from the light of some burning houses, with several buildings sustaining collapsed roofs from airstrikes. The army estimates hundreds

of families are in the village, but few ventured out.

Since Oct. 17, Iraqi forces and their Kurdish allies, Sunni tribesmen and Shiite militias have been converging on Mosul from all directions. Entering Gogjali could be the start of a new slog for the troops, as they’ll be forced to engage in difficult, house-to-house fighting in more urban areas. The operation is expected to take weeks, if not months.

Iraqi forces have made uneven progress. Advances have been slower south of the city, with government troops still 20 miles away.

The U.S. military estimates IS has 3,000 to 5,000 fighters in Mosul and an additional 1,500 to 2,500 in its outer defensive belt. The total includes about 1,000 foreign fighters.

Dear Mr. Berko: AT&T is my largest position. I started buying the stock at $24 in the summer of 2009. I own 6,783 shares, and my dividends are reinvested as you recommended. I’m hearing bad things about the buyout of Time Warner.

For example, I hear that the debt is too high and that stock dilution will limit earnings and dividend growth.

Others say that Time Warner and AT&T combined will be stronger and that revenues, earnings and dividends will grow faster than they have in the past.

My stockbroker is very negative on the merger and wants me to sell all my AT&T shares and buy Verizon. He is recommending that all his clients who own AT&T sell their shares. He is telling them and me that the buyout costs will weaken the balance sheet and income statement and that many mutual funds will have to sell hundreds of millions of shares, dropping the price back to the $25 level.

TAKING STOCK Malcolm Berko (T-$36.90) CEO, Randy Stephenson, decided to stop by the offices of Time Warner’s (TWX-88) CEO, Jeff Bewkes, in New York. While Jeff’s chef served an epicurean lunch of salmon, caviar and champagne, a deal was born; these two industry titans were planning to conquer the broadcast media universe.

After lunch, Randy left the TWX offices with visions of sugarplums that included TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network, HBO, CNN, Warner Bros. and the growing DC cinematic universe, as well as the Harry Potter franchise and other delicious media properties that could make T a serious rival for Disney (DIS-$93).

The combination of T and TWX creates a group of assets with some of the highest sales, earnings and free cash flow numbers in the world. The new company would have combined revenues of about $191 billion, combined earnings of $18.4 billion and a free cash flow of $20.2 billion. This $85.4 billion deal (cash and stock to

buy TWX at $107.50 a share) would create a conglomerate that produces content and then distributes this content, uniting the millions of AT&T’s pay-TV and wireless customers with TWX’s huge cache of media content.

It’s a no-brainer – maybe!

I’ve gone a bit bonkers trying to figure out how the financing of this mega-deal might work. I’ve played with several trial balance sheets and income statements using various amounts in AT&T shares and sums of cash. I related the numbers to revenues and interest costs and even included some $2 billion in annual synergy savings, and my conclusions are impressively positive.

However, I am not confident with my numbers and feel I’m missing data. Certainly, the combination of T with TWX could have explosively exciting potential. But the large amount of shareholder dilution (and I don’t know how much just yet) necessary to acquire TWX could hurt free cash flow, which is what secures T’s dividend and its growth.

Several analysts who have applied their data and assumptions to this buyout and have posited balance sheets and income statements have

produced results ranging from quietly negative to extremely positive.

Still, I can’t answer the question with the comfortable certainty you need. So I suggest that we recognize that both CEOs are really smart guys and have staff working for them who are also RSGs. And the boards of AT&T and Time Warner have RSGs with enviable national reputations who are now publicly tasked to make this work.

I trust these people. The biggest problem is Congress and a harridan named Sen. Lizzy Warren. Lizzy (rhymes with dizzy) may direct bureaucratic roadblocks to scuttle the deal, claiming the merger would concentrate too much power in the hands of too few. Today’s consensus is that Congress won’t allow the merger.

So stay the course, continuing to earn a 5.2 percent dividend, and T’s price will rise. If the deal succeeds, trust the professionals who put it together for shareholders’ best interest. And I like Verizon (VZ-$48).

Skluts Menswear to sell inventory, close doors after 88 years in Morris Owner Jim Riebe set to retire after 50-year career in retail business

roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – For as long as most men who live in Morris can remember, one of the things they could count on was where to get a suit or some dress clothes.

It was simple. Skluts Menswear, 307 Liberty St. From weddings to funerals to prom or homecoming or just general dress to dress-casual type of clothes, Skluts has been the go-to store for Morris men.

However, the local retail icon, which has been doing business in downtown Morris for almost 90 years, will sell its entire inventory and close its doors as owner Jim Riebe brings his own 50-year retail career to an end.

“I’m going to miss our customers, but you know when it’s time.

No one can do something forever,” Riebe said. “Someone told me that you should retire when you can – not when you can’t. I think that was great advice and I know this is the right time to do it while I can pursue some other interests.”

The store’s inventory sale opens to the public on Wednesday, Riebe said. Skluts Menswear will be open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m.

Always dedicated to customer service, he said he plans to stay through January, as he already has booked some weddings and doesn’t want to disappoint those customers. However, no more new clothes will be coming into the store.

Skluts Menswear was founded in 1928 by Abe Sklut, and employed several generations of family members over the years. It was taken over by his brother, Harry Sklut and nephew, Ben Sklut.

Riebe’s own career in retail began as a high school student, when he was hired for a part-time job in the men’s department at a Carson Pirie

Scott store. After attending Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, he entered Carson Pirie Scott’s management program.

“I was a store buyer, assistant manager and manager, but always thought I’d like to own my own store,” Riebe said.

The businessmen got together and Riebe purchased Skluts in 1985. Skluts continued to thrive, thanks to the Morris area’s strong economic base and the community’s commitment to its downtown merchants.

“I just can’t say enough about how important the support our community and public officials has been to the downtown and to our business over many years,” Riebe said.

“Things like the 3 French Hens Market, Cruise Nights and Home for the Holidays really help to keep people connected to the downtown. It’s a commitment you don’t see in a lot of communities.”

While big-box stores took their toll on independent men’s clothing stores across the country, Skluts more than held its own due its personal touch.

“Customer focus has been our big salvation,” Riebe said. “You go through happy and sad times with the same people. Sometimes you are doing a wedding for a family and sometimes a funeral, but you stay connected with the people and they stay connected with you. I have seen plenty of men bring their sons in for their first suit, and then those sons bring their own sons in.”

Riebe said he has enjoyed many different interactions with customers through the years at Skluts.

“You start off with customers, and they end up becoming your friends,” he said. “I’ll miss the people a lot but, as I told my wife, we’ll go on to the next chapter in our lives, and it’s going to be wonderful, too.

“We just haven’t had a real vacation in about 20 years. You get in a routine. There’s prom season, then wedding season, then graduation season, then Father’s Day, then the apparel shows. It’s a grind, and even though the heart and mind might be willing, the body needs a break. I love this place, but I also don’t want it to be the last place I see.”

Knights host unbeaten Rolling Meadows in second round

cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Lincoln-Way Central football coach Jeremy Cordell won’t have to say very much in order to motivate his squad for Friday’s 7 p.m. Class 7A second-round playoff game against Rolling Meadows.

Beside being underdogs against the 10-0 Mustangs, the 7-3 Knights hope to turn in a better showing at Lashmet Field than their 42-21 loss to Metea Valley in the regular-season finale.With a victory, they’ll become the

first team from the school to reach the quarterfinals since 2000, when the single Lincoln-Way program lost a heartbreaker in the semifinals.

Last week’s convincing 50-20 win at Reavis assured Central of just its fourth second-round playoff game and its second home game during that round since the initial school split.

“We have Rolling Meadows coming into the game at 10-0,” center Dan Jones said. “We knew last week that if we picked up a win that there was a possibility that we could be back home. Our last home game against

Metea Valley didn’t go as we planned, so we want to pick up a win for our seniors. This is our home turf, so we just want to defend it the best we can.

“This week we’re really focused and determined and have a good game plan, and as long as we follow through and things go right, we’ll be in great shape this week. It’s always great to face a challenge since you work hard all week. It will be a great playoff atmosphere with a lot of fans. It’s exciting to think that we’ve come this far since the beginning of the season.”

The Knights’ defense, which is

yielding 21.6 points a game, realizes that it needs to turn in one of its best efforts against a Mustangs squad that is averaging 37.1 points and has scored 43 or more points on five occasions.

“I know that our defense will do the best that it can, and we’re all just going to work as one team in order to get the outcome that we plan to,” defensive end Brandon Geagan said. “I’ve come to know my brothers on defense and know that they’ll give 100 percent all of the time.

From this vantage point, I can see all six of our teams winning.

On the other hand, any of the six could fall by the wayside. Morris, Lincoln-Way East and Lemont go in as slight favorites, Plainfield North and Lincoln-Way Central are slight underdogs and Wilmington-Byron is one of those special matchups that you almost have to call a tossup.

But again, labeling one of our teams a favorite or an underdog in Round 2 means nothing. The teams that play well relative to the opponent, and avoid killer mistakes, will win.

One game that is especially interesting is the Plainfield North at Bradley battle.

North played someone other than a Southwest Prairie Conference oppo-

nent for the first time this season in Round 1. The Tigers buried Highland Park, 42-0, in a game between the No. 16 and No. 17 seeds that was every bit as one-sided as the final score suggests.

North can be explosive offensively, but what has really made the Tigers go all season is a defense that ranks in the top 10 in the state, regardless of class, in terms of points allowed.

They are allowing 7.5 points a game, and in the past five have four shutouts. Joliet West, which North beat, 47-7, in Week 9, is the only opponent fortunate enough to have scored a touchdown over that span.

As a defensive lineman, North’s Ari Ekowa brings many of the same elements to the table as Julius Garrett brought for Joliet West. Strength certainly is there, but like Garrett, quickness is what separates Ekowa from other good defensive linemen.

And he also sees significant time in the offensive line.

“Ari has started both ways,” North coach Tim Kane said after the Highland Park game. “Our coaches talk with him, and they decide when he needs a break and when he can play both ways. He is a force on both sides of the ball, especially defensively.”

“It’s great knowing that we’re coming back to our fans and will be playing in front of the people who have supported us all the way. I like our teamwork and how we all just come together and play as one. When the move came, we all dropped our egos and decided to play football together.

I feel like I’ve been playing with these guys since freshman year.”

Rolling Meadows, which has collected 10 wins for the first time in its 46-year history, also is giving up just 7.6 points a game. Coach Matt Mishler’s squad has not allowed more than 14 points in any contest and has limited foes to a touchdown or less six times. Central is averaging 35 points a game.

“Rolling Meadows has a very good defensive record, but I think that we have a really strong game plan,” right tackle Eric Hypke said. “As long as we execute on Friday, we can power the ball on them, since I trust my teammates on offense to do their 1/11ths for us to succeed.

“We’ve worked very hard for this, and we’re excited to hear that we were going to have another chance on our home field. Metea was disappointing, and now we have a chance for

While the Mustangs seek their

first quarterfinals berth since 2006, many of the players in the red and black weren’t alive or were in diapers when the Knights last reached Round 3. A win assures either a home game with Normal Community or a contest at Benet Academy.

When you build a defense around Ekowa, inside linebackers Will Stoll and JJ Frey and cornerback Kevin Block, and you have a handful of others in the unit who also started in 2015, you can see why opponents have not been scoring much.

Bradley, of course, is a whole different animal for North to be facing.

The unbeaten Boilermakers are the No. 1 seed in Class 7A. They beat Bolingbrook, 22-21, after trailing, 21-7, in the fourth quarter. They jumped to a 28-0 first-quarter lead against Lincoln-Way East en route to a 38-21 victory.

On offense, Bradley does not throw as often as some, but Iowa-bound running back Camron Harrell, quarterback Morion Burtis and fullback Matt Rafe form as strong a rushing trio as you will find. On defense, Harrell and Damien Williams are outstanding in the secondary.

So, North at Bradley shapes up as a Round 2 classic. Of course, we have a few other games involving area teams that merit a similar description. Can’t wait to see how they all play out.

“They’re a great, quality opponent, so I can’t wait to get out on the field and battle it out with my brothers,” linebacker Nick DeGregorio said. “I trust every man that’s next to me is going to give 100 percent on every single play and will give it their all in this game.

After directing his fourth team in six years to the second round of the playoffs, Cordell is hoping that this could be his first quarterfinalist. But he knows there’s a good reason why Rolling Meadows is unbeaten, so he realizes that the Knights will have their hands full.

“Rolling Meadows is a quality opponent that will be very well-prepared and well-coached,” Cordell said. “Our kids are excited to get back home and play in front of our fans in a very meaningful game with it being in the second round with a chance to go to the quarters.

“I’m very proud of our kids and our program. All of our players talk about doing it together as a team, and we truly believe in team above talent.

Each day we come out here and try to work and improve, and every day we want to go 1-0.”

The opening round of the state football playoffs is a nice reward for all 256 teams that were deemed worthy of a postseason berth.

On the flip side, the opening round usually produces numerous lopsided results, and in most of those instances, you saw it coming.

Yes, there were some competitive games in Round 1. Our area’s shining example last weekend was Joliet West’s 10-9 loss at unbeaten Oswego in their Class 8A matchup.

Otherwise, however, games involving area schools were not all that tight, and it came as no big surprise.

In Round 2, things often change.

Most games are competitive. One reason is most of the remaining 128 teams have something to offer, and another contributing factor may be that the lesser of the two teams on the seeding chart often is at home.

In the Joliet area this weekend, we will have one Friday night game as Lincoln-Way Central (7-3) plays host to Rolling Meadows (10-0) in Class 7A at 7 p.m.

Saturday afternoon matchups include Plainfield North (8-2) at Bradley (10-0) in Class 7A at 1 p.m. and Morris (8-2) at Troy Triad (7-3) in Class 5A at 3 p.m. The Saturday night attrac-

That’s because all four of the area’s remaining teams in Class 4A are competing in the same sectional. Top-seeded Minooka will play No. 6 Joliet West and No. 2 Lincoln-Way East faces No. 3 Plainfield Central.

At the end, only one team will make it out. What’s exciting this year is that the area can be represented on all levels.

Let’s predict who comes out on top.

Class 4A Romeoville Sectional Minooka vs. Joliet West: These two are

polar-opposite regional stories.

Minooka breezed through with a 2513, 25-7 win over Romeoville and a 2514, 25-7 win over T.F. South. Joliet West clawed its way back from 1-0 game deficits to beat Homewood-Flossmoor and Lockport for the Tigers’ second consecutive crown.

On paper, this could actually be in the Tigers’ favor. They had to fight to stay alive, while Minooka strolled along.

Also on the same sheet, things may look similar.

Minooka’s Alli Papesh is the top hitter in the area with 9.7 kills a match, and Jenny Koerner is second at 9.6. Taylor Baranski tops all liberos with 13.7 digs a match, but West’s Emma Baxter follows closely with 12.6.

In the end, that’s the story.

Joliet West is a strong team with weapons, tough serving and girls who buy into what they’re being taught. The Indians are just the ones who are on top of the chart and no one can knock them down. Papesh, Rocky Perinar and Holly Bonde are too much for most defenses to handle.

Lincoln-Way East vs. Plainfield Central:

This match will be an upset no matter who wins.

Lincoln-Way East has the more well-rounded team and a better overall record.

Hannah Lesiak has been in the top 10 offensively all season, while Molly Hackett has been a double threat and Mel Weller a great defender. One of the biggest differences between the teams is the middle position. East has two good middles with Haley Hart leading the way.

On the other hand, Central has the best player in the state in Ashley Shook.

Taylor Landfair has made an unbelievable debut as a freshman go-to, and Katie Shook, Landfair, Annie O’Bradovich and Grace Brock have passed and defended well enough for Shook to run an effective offense.

NEW YORK – Jimmy Butler scored 22 points, Dwyane Wade had 12 in the first road game of his career not played for Miami, and the Bulls improved to 3-0 by beating the Brooklyn Nets, 118-88, on Monday night.

The Bulls had seven players in double figures, with Wade becoming the last of them when he left Bojan Bogdanovic behind with a crossover and was fouled on a drive to the basket in the fourth quarter.

Nikola Mirotic had 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Taj Gibson added 14 points and 11 boards for the Bulls.

After home victories against Eastern Conference playoff teams Boston

and Indiana to open the season, the Bulls easily handled their road opener, leading by as many as 33 points.

Bogdanovic scored 15 points and Jeremy Lin had 14 for the Nets, who fell to 1-3.

Butler made all five shots as the Bulls built an 18-point lead after one quarter that grew to 25 in the second. The Bulls led, 93-66, after three quarters, leaving the crowd with little to cheer for in the fourth beyond Wade’s smooth moves.

Butler and Gibson were a combined 9 for 9 in the first quarter as the Bulls got a number of easy baskets while playing at the quicker pace they are using since adding Wade and Rajon Rondo to their backcourt.

Cutler, Howard lead Bears to win over Vikings

CHICAGO – Jay Cutler threw for 252 yards and a touchdown after missing five games with a thumb injury, rookie Jordan Howard ran for a career-high 153 yards and a TD, and the Bears stunned the Minnesota Vikings, 20-10, on Monday night.

The Bears (2-6) sacked Sam Bradford five times while handing the NFC North-leading Vikings (5-2) their second straight loss.

Cutler was on target in his return from a sprained right thumb. Howard easily surpassed his previous high of 118 yards. Alshon Jeffery got his first touchdown reception of the season, and the Bears outgained Minnesota, 403 yards to 258.

Cutler had not played since he exited against Philadelphia in the second game of the season. But with his future up in the air after coach John Fox wavered in his commitment to him as the starter, he made a triumphant return.

Cutler completed 20 of 31 passes, including an 11-yard touchdown to Jeffery early in the third that made it 20-3.

Whether he quieted fans who thought

the Bears were better off with Brian Hoyer is another issue. But that became a moot point when Hoyer broke his left arm last week in a Thursday night loss at Green Bay. Howard had a 69-yard run, the longest for the Bears in seven years. Zach Miller added 88 yards receiving as the Bears stopped a three-game losing streak.

Bradford, playing behind a porous line, had another rough game after getting sacked six times the previous week against Philadelphia. He was 23 of 37 for 228 yards.

Matt Asiata ran for 42 yards with Jerick McKinnon sidelined by an ankle injury.

With a sparse and quiet crowd looking on, the Bears led, 13-3, at halftime.

It was almost a bigger advantage, but the Bears settled for field goals on their first two trips inside the 20.

Howard, a fifth-round draft pick, broke off a 69-yard run to the 13 on the Bears first possession. It was the longest rushing play for the Bears since Kahlil Bell’s 72-yarder against Philadelphia on Nov. 22, 2009. But instead of a touchdown, the Bears got a field goal from Connor Barth.

CHICAGO – John Dankanich’s plan for the World Series this week is a busy one: After the Cubs staved off elimination by beating Cleveland, he planned to drive home to Alabama from Wrigley Field, take his son trick-or-treating on Monday, watch Game 6 on Tuesday night and then get back in his car to drive to Cleveland to see Game 7.

He already has bought his ticket for a Wednesday night game he is positive will happen.

“They’re going to win and I’m going to Cleveland,” the 38-year-old engineer said Monday as he drove south to Huntsville after attending Sunday night’s 3-2 win by the Cubs that trimmed Cleveland’s Series lead to 3-2.

After years of waiting to see what new and exotic way their team would fall short – something the Cubs invariably seem to do, whether it involves a black cat, goat or a fan in the stands – Cubs fans are a decidedly confident bunch this fall.

As chants of “Cubs in Seven” reverberated around Wrigley on Sunday night, fans said they firmly believe the Cubs will become just the sixth team in Major League history to overcome a 3-1 Series deficit. Never mind that they would also be the first team to do that since the 1985 Kansas City Royals and the first to do it by winning Games 6 and 7 on the road since the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates.

“This is the year to believe, this is the year of miracles,” said Marilyn Hnatusko, who was at the game in which the Cubs beat the Dodgers to get into the World Series and then attended Game 3 of the Series last Friday.

Rosenthal was already thinking about getting a ticket and trying to figure out who he could stay with.

He hadn’t worked out many details on Sunday night, except for one: “I am planning on going up there, yes,” he said.

By Monday, it was becoming clear that Rosenthal and Dankanich will have plenty of company.

Cameron Popp of StubHub said that about 27 percent of the tickets being sold on the website for the next two games are associated with Illinois ZIP codes. And many expect some empty seats at Chicago-area workplaces the next couple of days.

“They’re working on their coughs today,” joked Ed Koenig, a longtime fan who won’t be making the trip east to Cleveland, but suspects many fans will use their best sick voice with their bosses, hang up and head to Cleveland.

The Cubs won at least three games in a row 16 times during the regular season and they will have to do it again to win their first Series since 1908.

“They can do it because they’ve done it,” Bock said.

No matter what happens, fans say they already see this season a lot differently than those that followed the Cubs’ collapse in 1969 that kept them out of the World Series. And they say there won’t be the bitterness and anger they felt in 2003 when the Cubs came within five outs of reaching the World Series before collapsing after a foul ball ricocheted off the hands of a fan named Steve Bartman.

“Last year we got swept by the Mets (in the National League Championship Series) and this year we made it to the World Series,” said Dankanich, a 38-year-old engineer who grew up a Cubs fan in Indiana. And, he said, if they don’t win in Cleveland, “next year is ours.”

NEW LENOX – People line up for the Encore Christmas sale, especially for decorated Christmas trees, said Donna Zanzola, the resale shop’s publicity chairwoman and former supervisor.

“This year, we have a 9-foot, fully lit tree that we’ll be selling,” Zanzola said. “And you know how much those are worth.”

The annual sale, which is Nov. 4 and Nov. 5 this year, will feature fully decorated artificial Christmas trees. Other items include glassware and dishes (Mikasa, Spode and Lenox), a variety of Santas and angels, Swarovski jewelry, clothing and gift baskets, according to the Silver Cross website.

All proceeds from the resale shop benefit services at the nonprofit Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, Zanzola said. In its 55 years, Encore – which opened Nov. 1, 1961, and is run by a hospital fundraising advisory board – has donated more than $1 million to the hospital, according to a news release from the hospital.

Items the donations bought over the years include X-ray equipment for the emergency department, beds for the intensive care unit, laptop computers for home health nurses, dialysis and mammography equipment, surgery carts and instruments, cardiac software, blanket warmers, and even a pickup truck to help maintain campus grounds and a van for transporting Silver Cross patients, visitors and staff, the release stated.

With a $75,000 pledge, the advisory board bought the water feature in the Dralle Serenity Garden outside the new Silver Cross Hospital, the release also stated.

Zanzola said the Encore advisory board recently fulfilled a $125,000 pledge to help fund an echo machine with TEE probe. The board’s newest goal is to raise $105,000 toward the purchase of a blanket warmer, nine new hospital beds, stretchers for moving patients and surgical tray for the robotic da Vinci surgical system.

The advisory board that operates Encore was formed in 1891, the same year Silver Cross Hospital was incorporated, Zanzola said. In the years before Encore opened, the board

hosted a variety of fundraisers – such as cake walks, card parties and teas – to provide for the hospital’s needs, Zanzola said.

Encore has provided a focused way to donate, although volunteers see a wide variety in donated mer-

chandise.

“You never know what’s coming in,” Zanzola said.

Zanzola said she will research the market value of jewelry before pricing pieces, but customers will always receive good value for them. Sometimes items are grouped together in themed gift baskets, which also sell well, Zanzola added.

Furthermore, no items go to waste. Whatever Encore doesn’t sell in a timely fashion is donated to a local charity, Zanzola said.

After more than 23 years of volunteering for Encore, Zanzola still believes in the hospital’s mission and she still enjoys the camaraderie of the other volunteers.

“We hope we’re doing good for the community and for the hospital,” Zanzola said. “We try to do our best.”

HEALTH BRIEFS Board-certified neurologist now seeing patients in Crest Hill

CREST HILL – Dr. Catherine Stachnik, board certified in neurology, has joined the Edward Neurosciences Institute in affiliation with Northwestern Medicine.

Her clinical expertise includes treating neurop- Dr. Catherine athies, radiculopathies, Stachnik motor neuron disease, myasthenia gravis, myopathies and other neurologic conditions. Stachnik, a subspecialist in neuromuscular medicine, uses electrodiagnostic testing, such as nerve conduction studies (NCVs) and electromyographies (EMGs), to diagnose these conditions.

She earned her doctor of osteopathic medicine from Midwestern University in Downers Grove, completed her residency in neurology at the University of Illinois Hospital in Chicago and completed a fellowship in neuromuscular medicine at the Northwestern University McGaw Medical Center.

Stachnik is a member of the American Academy of Neurology and American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine. She is fluent in Polish and Spanish.

Board-certified oncologist joins cancer center in New Lenox

NEW LENOX – Dr. Shayan Rayani, a medical oncologist, has joined the cancer care team at the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.

NEW LENOX – Lincoln-Way West High School senior Hailee Slate’s enrollment in human anatomy and physiology medical class combined with her attendance to a recent summer conference have escalated her interest in the subject of neuroscience.

After applying for various science-related scholarships and researching potential universities, Hailee was contacted by The National Leadership Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists.

She received an invitation to join the three-day conference in Boston, where she would learn from different speakers, network with other students, and observe live knee surgery. Her completion of the conference in June was

Joliet West High School SoCA Club supports chemotherapy patients JOLIET – Some like to give, some like to volunteer, but students at Joliet West High School choose to do both as they support chemotherapy patients.

Kristen Koppers, sponsor of Students of Community Advocacy (SoCA), put out a request through the use of social media and her school to collect items for patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Without realizing how much of an impact social media has, bags of items were being dropped off in her classroom almost immediately. From the bags of items received, Koppers and her students separated the items by gender to make over 40 chemo care bags to deliver to local treatment centers around Joliet/Morris area.

In addition to items in the bags, each bag is dedicated in memory of a person who lost the bat-

tle to cancer or in honor of someone who beat it, giving others hope.

Student captain, Katie Thontlin, created an Excel spreadsheet where each bag was numbered with the dedicated ribbon.

Those who receive a bag are able to log on to the SoCA website www.

Behavioral therapy can treat pain Dear Dr. K: My doctor suggested cognitive behavioral therapy to treat my chronic back pain. Does he think I’m imagining my discomfort?

Dear Reader: I’m often asked this question about cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

Because it was developed by a psychiatrist and involves “talk therapy,” people assume it is used to treat just psychological problems.

Not so. CBT can help people cope with many chronic “physical” illnesses. The symptoms caused by physical illnesses can generate anxiety and irrational fears. These, in turn, can make the pain worse.

Low back pain is the second most common cause of disability in the United States.

Yet even though back pain is so common, not all people respond in the same way to this often-disabling condition. These differing responses are due in part to different people’s attitudes and outlooks.

Don’t misunderstand; I’m not saying you are imagining your pain. But psychological factors can influence your pain. I spoke about this with my colleague Dr. Srini Pillay, assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

Pain itself can rewire your brain as well.

When pain first occurs, it impacts your pain-sensitivity brain circuits. But lasting pain switches brain activity away from pain circuits to circuits that process emotions.

That’s why emotions like anxiety often take center stage in chronic back pain. And it’s why emotional control becomes that much more difficult.

The good news is CBT and mindfulness training really can be helpful for chronic back pain. Researchers recently published a landmark study that strongly supports the use of these therapies.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff fulness or CBT worked significantly better than medical care alone to reduce both their disability and pain-related suffering. What’s more, this greater improvement still was evident a full year later, when the study ended.

Mindfulness training teaches us to be aware of, and accept, moment-to-moment physical sensations of discomfort. At the same time, it teaches us to let go of our usual negative reactions.

CBT takes a somewhat different approach. It helps us learn to observe and identify our negative thoughts about our condition and replace them with more realistic and positive ones.

I often write about CBT, largely because my readers ask about it. In my professional lifetime, it is the most important new form of talk therapy. Studies have shown its effectiveness. The evidence is convincing enough the doctor who developed the technique was honored with one of the most prestigious prizes for medical research, the Lasker Award.

Indeed, when I graduated medical school, the most prestigious form of psychiatric talk therapy was psychoanalysis, the technique developed by Sigmund Freud. CBT is increasingly used to treat psychological illnesses, and psychoanalysis seems less widely practiced. Particularly in the treatment of chronic physical illnesses, such as low back pain, CBT has become a very important form of treatment.

My research on the internet says if the ceremony is a religious one, the phrase “the honor of your presence” is appropriate, and it also is our preference. However, if the ceremony is a civil one, the “pleasure of your company is requested” is the preferred one.

Our minister will be performing the ceremony in the gazebo at the country club. Although it’s not a church, the ceremony certainly will be religious. The wording on your wedding invitation is not determined by whether you are being married in a church.

I ran your letter by Lisa Grotts, a San Francisco Bay-area certified etiquette expert, who had this to say: “The wording of wedding invitations varies, depending upon who is hosting the wedding, i.e., the parents of the bride or groom. If the bride’s parents are hosting, then the phrase ‘the honor of your presence’ is correct. However, if you and your fiancé (or other family members) are hosting the wedding, then the more modern terminology ‘the pleasure of your company’ is preferable.”

My brother and his wife have been married 3½ years and have an 18-month-old daughter. My sister-in-law, “Barb,” is either very rude or passive-aggressive to our mother in emails and when she thinks no one is around.

At Christmas, Barb sends out an email detailing what we are and are not allowed to buy for their daughter. If we can’t do exactly what she wants, she threatens to cancel Christmas.

Barb tells my mom because her mother doesn’t have much money, Mom can’t spend more than her mother does. So, because my family has a little more money, we are being punished.

Barb is extremely demeaning and hurtful to us. I can’t understand why my brother allows it.

My husband and I are sick and tired of her acting this way, and the way she treats my mother is cruel. I’m tempted to confront her about how she has ruined Christmas for my parents. She basically doesn’t allow us to have feelings, and I can’t believe we are standing for it. – Holiday

Yesterday, we looked at declarer’s making five diamonds in this deal after West cashed two spade winners, then exited with a heart. What resource did West miss?

The bidding was intricate. North’s second-round two-spade cue-bid showed his hand strength. His threespade cue-bid on the next round was an unsuccessful attempt to reach three no-trump if South had a spade stopper.

West, after taking his two spade tricks, should check the high-card points. He has 12, and dummy holds 13. That leaves only 15 unaccounted for. South surely has the club and heart aces and, presumably, no more side-suit losers. West should wonder how his side might collect a trump trick. However, he should also realize that declarer knows that he, West, has the diamond queen. But because West has such good trump spots, the eight and nine, there is a chance for a trump promotion.

At trick three, West should lead the spade four -- a loser, not a winner, when you want partner to ruff.

Then the spotlight turns to East. He knows from the bidding that South is also out of spades. What is his partner doing? He must be trying for an uppercut. To play his part, East ruffs with the diamond four.

Note that when South overruffs with the 10, West gains a trump trick to defeat the contract.
