History of Postcards – Part 2 Deltiology, the term used for the collection and study of postcards, is thought by many to be one of the largest collectible hobbies in the world.

In order to best understand the inscriptions on the postcards, a brief background account of the United States formal postal rules and design of the card is necessary.

The private postal card was first developed by John P. Charlton of Philadelphia in 1861, for which he obtained the copyright and later transferred to H. L. Lipman.

These early cards, decorated with a slight border pattern and labeled “Lipman’s Postal Card, Patent Applied For,” were for sale on the market until 1873 when the first government postcards appeared.

The U.S. Postal Service issued prestamped postal cards in 1873. The USPS was the only one allowed to print such cards until 1898 when Congress passed the Private Mailing Card Act, which allowed private companies to produce and sell cards. Postcards printed and sold before 1898 are generally considered to be part of the Pioneer Era. The term “Private Mailing Card” was required to be printed on all cards not issued by the U.S. Postal Service.

At this point, only the government was allowed to print the term “Postcard” on the back of the cards. All private printing firms used various terms, such as souvenir card or mailing cards correspondence cards. Postcards produced from 1898 to 1901 are considered part of the Private Mailing Card Period.

Most pre-1901 postcards are characterized by an “Undivided Back,” meaning they do not have the line going down the center of the card. By law, writing was not permitted on the address side of the postcard, and that is why messages were written across the front over the photographs or artwork on the card.

Some private postcard firms even provided a small space on the front for messages. These private mailing cards were to be posted with one-cent stamps (the same rate as governmental postals) instead of

OLD POSTCARD IMAGES SOUGHT FOR PUBLICATION David Belden is a history teacher at Minooka Community High School and currently is publishing local postcard books with Arcadia Publishing in his Local History classes. He and his students are looking for old Joliet photos and postcards, and images from Joliet’s parks, for a new publication. the two-cent letter rate.

The turn-of-the-century also saw the beginning of “Real Photo” postcards. These were postcards that had real photographs and were usually printed on a special stock paper.

The top postcard is an example of the address side of the private mailing era postcards. Notice that the graphic states the card is a “ U.S. Postal Card,” and the one-cent postal stamp is actually printed on the card. Also, notice the instruction to the sender that “Nothing But The Address Can Be Placed On This Side.” The private postal card was mailed to William Milne Esquire of Lockport..

The bottom postcard also dates from the private mailing era. This private mailing card is typical of cards sent from banks as payment reminders. This postcard is from The Merchants’ National Bank of Chicago and is dated May 16, 1883. This private era postal card was mailed from Chicago to Lockport (Will County). The typed card reads: “Dear sir: I have received your favor of 15 with enclosures, as stated.”

The handwritten portion reads: “$174.75 to Merchants National Peoria, use Weds Canal Commissioners.” The card is signed “Yours respectfully, C.B. Blair, President.”

Minooka celebrates Halloween with annual costume parade

bokon@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – They had something special to wear anyway, so why not have a parade?

The Minooka Halloween Costume Parade on Saturday gave kids and adults an extra opportunity to wear their costumes. For kids it meant an extra day for treats, too, as candy was thrown from floats and by marchers in the annual parade.

“Candy – lots and lots of candy,” William Stadler, 7, dressed as a hot dog, said when asked what he liked about the parade.

“I think it’s a fun, hometown parade,” said Mahryha Iwema of Channahon, who had a son marching in the parade. “It’s just festive and gets everyone in the mood.”

Later in the evening there would be a bonfire and weenie roast as Minooka got into the Halloween and autumn spirit.

Parade weather was sunny and in the 70s.

Kids in costumes lined Wabena Avenue to see the parade and wait for candy, much of which was thrown by kids in costumes in the parade.

About 600 people marched in the parade, including about 100 with Mrs. Mariellen’s Preschool, a traditional parade participant.

“My grandson is in the Minooka band, and my granddaughters are in Mrs. Mariellen’s Preschool,” said Kelly Riley of Joliet, telling what brought her to Minooka.

Also, Riley said, “We just like Minooka. It’s a great little town.”

“I just wanted the kids to be able to dress up,” Musclow said. “It’s a lot of fun.”

Halloween costumes cost enough that kids should be able to wear them more than on Halloween night, she said.

“I think everybody has a good time.

The kids are happy to be here,” Musclow said.

Kelly Thompson said parade day is “a good time to be able to dress up one more time and get candy.”

“We are here every year,” said Jesus Martinez, who really couldn’t miss it Saturday.

His granddaughter, Lilyana Martinez, told him that she would be in the parade.

“She would be very disappointed if I were not here,” Jesus said.

There were 25 entries in the parade, including the Minooka Community High School Marching Indians, which played “Thriller.”

Adam Calkins left behind a lot of life

PLAINFIELD – Legacy.

This one word sums up the reason why Adam “Whitey” Calkins, 18, did the zany things he did, said his parents, Keith and Jennifer Calkins of Plainfield.

Such as wearing a tie-dyed suit to prom. Such as his tendency to break into song and dance.

“He loved every kind of music, from Johnny Cash to rap,” Jennifer said.

“He loved Neil Diamond.”

Such as creating a rap video when he ran for class president (which Adam won) at Plainfield Central High School during his senior year. The video still makes his parents smile.

“He was always so full of life,” Keith said.

Such as showing support for his school by supporting home games with his enthusiastic attendance and then supporting his friends as their personal cheerleader in all their endeavors.

“He had so much energy,” Jennifer said. “He could light up a room.”

Such as being the yin to his brother Zachary Calkins’ yang – despite the fact Zach is five years older than Adam, Jennifer said. Such as not being embarrassed to hug Jennifer when she was having a stressful day or take the hand of a friend grieving the death of his brother with a reassuring, “It’s going to

“And he had a huge smile.”

During those times Adam got into

mischief, Jennifer couldn’t keep him grounded for long.

“He always said, ‘I have to leave my legacy,’ ” Jennifer said.

It appears Adam did just that.

On Oct. 9, Adam, an asthmatic, woke his parents in the middle of the night struggling to breathe. When medicine through a nebulizer failed, his parents called 911. Jennifer said he collapsed in her arms before paramedics arrived.

Although Adam was revived, the concern was brain damage from lack of oxygen. Adam was pronounced dead Oct. 13 and removed from the respirator Oct. 15. His memorial service was held in the gym at Plainfield Central High School the following day.

In the meantime, the foundation Adam set for his legacy bloomed. About 200 students visited him in the hospital before his death, Adam’s parents said.

After Adam died, students printed and distributed shirts with his image on them. They started a Twitter account in his name and shared memories.

Keith and Jennifer felt amazed at the outpouring of love, and yet they weren’t surprised.

“He touched a lot of people in a deep way just because of how kind he was,” Keith said.

Students also set up a GoFundMe account to raise money for medical expenses. The account already is in excess of $22,000, Keith said. He and Jennifer said they will use that money

to fund a scholarship in Adam’s name.

Adam wanted to be a psychologist, Keith said.

“He was interested in how the mind worked, why we thought the way we did and why we did the things we did,” Jennifer said.

Adam’s organs were donated to Gift of Hope in Illinois. As a result, three people will live because of Adam’s legacy.

A 59-year-old woman received Adam’s liver and right kidney, Jennifer said. A 66-year-old man received his heart. A 36-year-old man received his pancreas and left kidney, Jennifer added.

Adam’s lungs were donated to research. Memorials are directed to the American Lung Association. And this is the final part of Adam’s legacy, the part Keith particularly stressed. He wants to raise awareness of the seriousness of asthma.

Keith said he never realized people could die from asthma, even asthma that appears mild or childhood asthma assumed to be outgrown. He hopes making people aware will save lives, even if it didn’t save Adam’s.

“I always said he put 100 years into 18,” Keith said. “He’s with God now.”

Joliet police appreciate latest goodwill gestures

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Residents from Essington Place last week brought Halloween treats to the police station, one of a stream of goodwill gestures Joliet police have received from the community for several months.

“We want the world to know that we are grateful, and these are good guys,” Essington Place resident Mary White said.

White on Friday was joined by Essington Place residents Carol Broske and Inez Taylor, along with Carol Harrington, enrichment coordinator for the retirement community at 901 Essington Road, in delivering Halloween gift bags to the police department.

White said it was a way of showing appreciation for help the community has received from both police and firefighters. In total, the residents

brought 150 gift bags to first responders.

In July, Police Chief Brian Benton mentioned that in the aftermath of sniper killings of police officers in Dal-

las and Baton Rouge, people in Joliet showed support with cards and baked goods. He said then that the goodwill gestures heartened local police during a period of tension because of national attention focused on officer-involved shootings in other cities.

Benton said Friday that police continue to appreciate shows of support, such as the gift bags from the Essington Place residents.

“Over the past year, we’ve had an outpouring of community support with gestures like that,” Benton said.

Just recently, he said, the staff at St. Joseph Academy, a school located downtown, brought a chili dinner to the police station and invited officers who were on patrol to stop by when they could for chili at the school.

“It’s unexpected,” Benton said, “but greatly appreciated.”

Illinois Report Card shows ‘stability’ in times of fiscal instability

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Illinois Report Card shows overall improvement in student attendance, high school dropout rate and other indicators, according to state education officials.

The Illinois State Board of Education unveiled the 2016 Illinois Report Card at illinoisreportcard.com Monday that provides educators, parents and communities an informative snapshot of schools and districts.

The data featured on the report card website for the first time include teacher attendance and six- and seven-year graduation rates, which represent the state’s commitment to graduate students with individualized education programs, according to ISBE. The majority of the data from the report card is collected annually from school districts through the state’s Student Information System, Employ-

ment Information System and e-Report Card data collection system.

The overall picture of the new report card shows stability in the face of fiscal instability, said John Barker, ISBE chief performance officer, during a media conference call Friday.

As an example, he said the fourand five-year cohort graduation rates for students from last year to this year have essentially stayed the same.

“What that suggests is we have committed and dedicated educators and administrators out there [and] communities, who are holding these gains, these progress pieces that have been seen out there, even in the face of uncertain times from a financial standpoint,” Barker said.

Barker also said the report card website has a redesigned look to make it more accessible to users with mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets. According to ISBE, the website

of our Second Amendment rights. I believe suspected terrorists on the federal No Fly List should be restricted from buying firearms. Republicans and Democrats agree on this, but we disagree on who should decide and place suspected terrorists on the No Fly List. The debate is who should have the ability to deny U.S. citizens their constitutionally protected right to buy a firearm – an unelected bureaucrat or a judge.

Democrats want to vote on an unconstitutional bill that violates due process rights of all American citizens.

Republicans believe Americans are innocent until proven guilty. The government must bear the burden of proof before someone’s rights are taken away, and the ultimate decision must fall to a judge.

I won’t get too many trick-or-treaters on Monday night. I guess because the homes in my neighborhood are too far apart. While we give out good stuff, kids naturally want to go for quantity.

I always buy way more candy than I need, just in case I have more goblins than expected.

So then there’s the dilemma of what to do with the leftovers that I don’t want in the house. Parents might wonder what to do with all that candy after the kids come home with a pillowcase full.

Shorewood Family Dental Care has a good solution for their patients. It has teamed up with Operation Gratitude and for the past five years has sent excess candy donated by families to soldiers overseas.

Operation Gratitude sends out more than 200,000 individually addressed care packages every year to

Their mission is to lift spirits, meet the evolving needs and express appreciation to everyone who serves our nation.

They accomplish this through collection drives, letter-writing campaigns, care projects, care package assembly events and partnering with other organizations, schools and businesses.

Last year, Shorewood Family Dental collected 250 pounds of the sweet stuff. Imagine all the cavities that

didn’t happen because of that.

By donating some of their candy, kids are taking better care of their teeth and helping to support those who support us.

Besides getting a sweet treat – a little taste of home – kids also are encouraged to write letters of thanks, draw pictures or make cards to send along, which is something the soldiers and recipients treasure even more than the candy.

The dental office hands out pictures to color, sometimes of their trademark giraffes. A lot of families turn in notes to send along.

Operation Gratitude then emails back photos of soldiers and first responders holding thank you signs and big smiles.

“It’s very heartwarming for our soldiers; they love [the letters, cards] even more than the candy,” Dames

said. “Oftentimes it brings them to tears.”

Operation Gratitude reached out to Shorewood Family Dental several years ago and asked it to help collect Halloween candy.

“As soon as we saw [the request] we knew we would want to do it,” Dames said. “We jumped on it right away.”

The partners at Shorewood Family Dental – Drs. Robert Funk, Henry Vicioso and Gina Bruck – are very involved in the community and enjoy doing things, Dames said.

“It’s a win-win situation for everyone,” Dames said. “It makes us feel better; it’s a good thing.”

Navarro said the Heritage Corridor Convention and Visitors Bureau produces ads and other marketing pieces to help highlight the area and encourage visits. The group also is at different events, trade and travel shows, both domestically and internationally, promoting the area and its attractions.

The group’s next two events include the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival in Chicago in November, and the Travel and Adventure Show in Rosemont, in January. The Heritage Corridor Convention and Visitors Bureau also helps members with marketing.

JOLIET – Will County is probably not thought of by locals as a tourist destination.

But in 2015, visitors to Will County brought $642.29 million to the local economy – a 2.7 percent increase from 2014, according to the U.S. Travel Data Center. Collectively, Illinois saw a 2.6 percent increase in travel expenditures in 2015.

Will County typically is fourth among Illinois counties in travel expenditures, President/CEO of the Heritage Corridor Convention and Visitors Bureau Robert Navarro said. Cook, DuPage and Lake counties see more travel.

“The Interstate 80 and Interstate 55 corridors – and all of their lodging, dining and attractions – keep Will County high in the ranks,” Navarro said.

Route 66 and its history continues to be a big draw for tourists, Navarro said.

It’s common to see international travelers making the trip to Will County, he noted, saying that they “want to see

America.”

“Domestically, all things retro are becoming more and more popular, including The Gemini Giant and diners like the Joliet Route 66 Diner,” Navarro said.

Nice weather made for great attendance at Chicagoland Speedway, Navarro said, and hotel rooms were full surrounding NASCAR race days. Old Canal Days in Lockport and Star Wars Day in Joliet have helped bring people into the city as well, he noted.

Some of the tourism dollars spent in Will County likely are from other Illinoisans. The intrigue of a “day trip” to Will County offers a great escape for those in Chicago and throughout the state, Navarro said.

“They could view the history of the towns along the Illinois & Michigan Canal, see buildings like the Old Joliet Prison in Joliet or Old Stone Church in Lemont, and stay in a local hotel for a mini vacation,” Navarro said.

Lanita loved spending time with her granddaughter, she also enjoyed listening to music with her uncle, Keith Love and dancing.

Robert M. “Bob” Carlson, passed away at Joliet Area Community Hospice Home, Friday, October 28, 2016. Age 85 years.

Survived by his wife of 42 years Vicky L. Carlson (nee Smith); two daughters, Amy (Bryan) Ogrizovich and Amanda (Art) Tancl, III. Six grandchildren, Jackson, William and Abigail Ogrizovich, Gabriella, Grant and Griffin Tancl.

He graduated from Joliet Township High School Class of 1950. Retired from Uno-Ven Refinary in 1995 after 43 years. Member of Faith Lutheran Church and former member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Bob enjoyed boating, swimming, camping and family vacations. Former treasurer of Thor Lodge of VASA Order of America. He is a member of Wilmington Recreation Club, Charter member of the Joliet Area Historical Society and was a Corvette Enthusiast.

Money pours in for anti-pipeline protest

CANNON BALL, N.D. – The crowdsourcing goal was modest: $5,000, enough to help a few dozen people camping in North Dakota to protest the nearby construction of the four-state Dakota Access oil pipeline. The fund has since topped a staggering $1 million.

The fund is among several cash streams that have provided at least $3 million to help with legal costs, food and other supplies to those opposing the nearly 1,200-mile pipeline. It also might give protesters the ability to prolong their months-long encampments that have attracted thousands of supporters, as the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe pursues the fight in court.

And as the number of protest-related arrests increased this week, so did contributions – the funds raked in more than $200,000 between Thursday and Friday alone.

But demonstrators are quick to note that the amount of money raised and what they have left isn’t the same.

“It still feels unreal sometimes because it is such an astronomical figure to me,” said Ho Waste Wakiya Wicasa, the protester who set up the GoFundMe account that has raised more than $1 million mostly for operating expenses at the camp, which took root in April.

“The money goes as quickly as it comes, but without it having been as much as it is, we certainly wouldn’t have been able to be as productive as we have been in the fight,” he said.

The money has been used for grocery store trips every two days that cost about $2,000 each, 20 yurts purchased for $160,000, and around $7,000 for bail money. It has also paid for a storage area, composting toilets, tiny houses, tepees, a medical area and generators powered by solar panels and wind.

A bookkeeper and an accountant now keep track of the crowd-sourced money.

“I got people to take care of,” Brave Bull Allard said. “I got to provide homes for people and blankets, thermal wear, socks, hats and gloves, and food. Right now, we are feeding 670 people.”

One online legal defense fund has raised more than $655,000 for “the legal defense of warriors protecting land, water and human rights.”

Meanwhile, much of the money the tribe is using for the legal fight is from at least $1.3 million in direct donations, tribal chairman Dave Archambault recently told The Associated Press. He declined to say how much tribal officials have spent so far, saying that could give their opponents an advantage in the legal case.

Energy Transfer Partners also has declined to provide an estimate of its legal expenses. The tribe is pursuing appeals after losing in lower courts.

The Standing Rock Sioux didn’t solicit money, Archambault said, but asked other tribes for letters of support or formal resolutions.

NORCIA, Italy – The third powerful earthquake to hit Italy in two months spared human life Sunday but struck at the nation’s identity, destroying a Benedictine cathedral, a medieval tower and other beloved landmarks that had survived the earlier jolts across a mountainous region of small historic towns.

Jury selection begins for officer in motorist death

CHARLESTON, S.C. – A jury being chosen this week in Charleston will have to decide whether a white former police officer is guilty of murder in the shooting of an unarmed black motorist that shocked the nation after a bystander released cellphone video of the confrontation.

Michael Slager’s attorney contends there was more to the incident than what appeared on the widely seen video clip showing Walter Scott’s shooting, including a fight between the pair and a tussle over the officer’s Taser. Coincidentally, the same week that a panel is being seated in the Slager case, jury selection begins for the trial of a former University of Cincinnati police officer who – like Slager – stands accused of murder in the shooting death of an unarmed black man.

Syria rebels keep up offensive on Aleppo

BEIRUT – Syrian insurgents on Sunday kept up their shelling of government-controlled areas of Aleppo, killing at least seven people, including three children, state TV reported, and pushing their way with car bombs and tanks into new territory in the western part of the city. The Syrian government claimed the opposition fighters used toxic gas.

The attacks raised the death toll in the three-day old offensive to at least 41 civilians, including 16 children, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition monitoring group that has a network of activists in rebel and government controlled areas in Syria.

Clinton says she won’t be ‘knocked off course’ The ASSOCIATED PRESS WILTON MANORS, Fla. – Hillary Clinton vowed Sunday that she would not be “knocked off course” in the election’s final days, as she sought to push past a new FBI email inquiry in a sexting probe that delivered a late jolt to her race against Republican Donald Trump.

“I’m not stopping now, we’re just getting warmed up,” Clinton declared during a packed rally with gay and lesbian supporters in battleground Florida. “We’re not going to be distracted, no matter what our opponents throw at us.”

Trump campaigned in Las Vegas at a casino owned by billionaire GOP megadonor Sheldon Adelson and accused the Justice Department, without offering evidence, of trying to protect Clinton after the FBI’s discovery of new emails that could be related to its investigation into Clinton’s use of a private email server.

“Hillary has nobody but herself to blame for her mounting legal problems,” Trump said during a rally.

Clinton’s advisers and fellow Democrats pressured FBI Director James Comey anew to release more details about the emails, including whether Comey had even reviewed them himself.

The message was aimed at gathering more information about what the bureau is seeking from a computer that appears to belong to disgraced former New York Rep. Anthony Weiner, the estranged husband of Huma Abedin, one of Clinton’s closest advisers.

Tim Kaine, Clinton’s running mate, said Comey owed it to the public to be more forthcoming about the emails under review by the FBI with only nine days remaining before the Nov. 8 election. Calling Comey’s

Clinton’s campaign chairman, John Podesta, said Comey’s handling of the matter was “inappropriate.”

Clinton made unannounced stops Sunday in Florida at an early voting location, a Miami brunch spot and a soul food restaurant.

She also addressed a predominantly black church, where she spoke of overcoming disappointments.

“Scripture tells us to rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance and endurance produces character,” she said. “And character produces hope.”

Clinton made no direct mention of the new FBI investigation, which has created anxiety among Democrats.

But while she criticized the FBI for a lack of transparency during a campaign appearance on Saturday, she tried to shift her attention back to Trump on Sunday, casting him as a selfish billionaire with a striking lack of empathy.

Speaking to LGBT supporters in Wilton Manors,

she seized on a Washington Post report about Trump appearing at a fundraiser for children with HIV and pretending to be a donor, although he never gave money to the charity.

“It’s always Donald Trump first and everyone else last,” she said.

Comey’s actions Friday have roiled the White House race, energizing Trump as polls had showed him sliding and unnerving Democrats worried about the presidency and down-ballot congressional races.

In a letter to Congress on Friday, Comey said the FBI had recently come upon new emails while pursuing an unrelated case and was reviewing whether they were classified.

The FBI is looking into whether there was classified information on a device belonging to Weiner. Federal authorities in New York and North Carolina are investigating online communications between Weiner and a 15-year-old girl.

The developments prompted Trump to quip to his Las Vegas supporters, “We never thought we were going to say ‘thank you’ to Anthony Weiner,” he said.

Next Congress: Perhaps more minorities

WASHINGTON – No matter who wins the presidency, women and minorities are poised to make gains in the next Congress. The offspring of two pillars of the Washington establishment – former Vice President Dick Cheney and ex-CIA Director Leon Panetta – have a good chance to resume their families’ service in Congress.

The number of women in the Senate could increase by four or more above the current 20, with as many as three female minorities. It would be the highest number of women in the Senate in history, but nowhere near the percentage of females in the general population.

A record 167 women are running for the House. While outcomes are uncertain, analysts predict the number of women in the House for the 115th Congress that convenes Jan. 3 will exceed the current 84.

Racial minorities are expected to make historic gains, although Congress is likely to remain overwhelmingly white, male and middle-aged.

The new Congress could have some familiar names, with several former members seeking their old seats.

A look at how the demographics of Congress may change following the Nov. 8 elections.

WOMEN ASCENDANT

Twenty women now serve in the Sen-

ate, a total likely to rise next year.

Kelly Dittmar, an assistant professor at Rutgers University and a scholar at the Center for American Women and Politics, said female candidates may benefit from running with Hillary Clinton at the top of the ticket – and from sexist comments made by Donald Trump. But she said the major boost is from Clinton’s standing. Twelve of the 16 women running for Senate this year are Democrats.

“Democratic candidates will be helped by a strong Democrat on top of the ticket,” Dittmar said. She cited Deborah Ross in North Carolina, Katie McGinty in Pennsylvania and Rep. Tammy Duckworth in Illinois as likely beneficiaries of possible Clinton coattails.

There are two states where a woman is guaranteed to win: New Hampshire, where incumbent Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte faces Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan, and California, where two Democrats – State’s Attorney General Kamala Harris and Rep. Loretta Sanchez – square off.

Not all the news for women is positive, said Dittmar, who has written research briefs outlining the prospect for female candidates in the House and Senate. Based on current polls, Maryland’s 10-member congressional delegation is likely to revert to all-male, which Dittmar called especially notable because Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., holds the record as the longest-serving woman in Congress. Rep. Donna Edwards is retir-

ing after losing a bid for the Senate.

Maryland could join more than a dozen states with all-male delegations in Congress. If elected, McGinty would be the state’s first woman to serve in the Senate and could find herself the lone woman in Pennsylvania’s 20-member congressional delegation.

“Pennsylvania has a lot of work to do” to elect more women, Dittmar said, including better recruitment of female candidates at all levels. “They are still contending with a bit of a boys’ club in Pennsylvania.”

MORE MINORITIES

Former Illinois Sen. Carol Moseley Braun, the first African-American woman elected to the Senate, said she was thrilled to see “people running for office who don’t fit the traditional role of wealthy, white and male.”

Braun and Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, are only the minority women who have served in the Senate.

Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto, who is running for an open seat in Nevada, joins Sanchez in seeking to become the nation’s first Latina senator, while Duckworth could become the Senate’s second Asian-American woman. Harris, the daughter of immigrants from India and Jamaica, could become just the second black woman elected to the Senate and the first with South Asian roots.

In the House, Democrat Pramila Jayapal of Washington state has a shot

at becoming the first Indian-American woman to serve in Congress, while former Delaware Labor Secretary Lisa Blunt Rochester is likely to become the first woman and first African-American to represent her state in Congress. In New York, Democratic state Sen. Adriano Espaillat could become the first native of the Dominican Republic to join Congress.

READY FOR A COMEBACK

Former Sens. Russ Feingold of Wisconsin and Evan Bayh of Indiana, both Democrats, are trying to win back their old seats, while a few ex-House members also are running for their former jobs: Democrats Colleen Hanabusa of Hawaii, Carol Shea-Porter of New Hampshire, Brad Schneider of Illinois, Joe Garcia of Florida and Pete Gallego of Texas.

Republican Liz Cheney of Wyoming is widely expected to win her father’s old House seat, while Democrat Jimmy Panetta is running for an open seat in California representing the same region once served by his father, who had a long career in Washington as congressman, budget director, White House chief of staff, CIA director and defense secretary.

Iraq’s Shiite militias join Mosul push; bombs rock Baghdad

IRBIL, Iraq – Thousands of fighters flocked to join Iraq’s state-sanctioned, Iran-backed Shiite militias on Sunday, advancing to cut off Islamic State extremists holed up near Mosul in northern Iraq while bombers killed at least 17 people in Shiite neighborhoods of Baghdad.

Militia spokesmen said that some 5,000 fighters had joined their push to encircle from the west the country’s second-largest city of Mosul, the IS militants’ last bastion in Iraq, which is linked by road to territory it holds in Syria. Karim al-Nuri of the militias’ umbrella group, known as the Popular Mobilization Units, and Jaafar al-Husseini, a spokesman for unit member the Hezbollah Brigades, said that a total of some 15,000 Shiite fighters were now participating in the battle.

The Iraqi military confirmed the figures, which, including army units,

militarized police, special forces and Kurdish fighters would bring the total number of anti-IS forces in the offensive to more than 40,000.

The two-week-old offensive to drive IS from Mosul had been long-anticipated, since the Sunni extremists stormed into the city in 2014 and drove out a much larger Iraqi force, albeit one that was demoralized from neglect and corruption. Troops are now converging on the city from all directions, although most fighting still is taking place in towns and villages on Mosul’s outskirts.

The operation is expected to take weeks, if not months.

The Popular Mobilization Units said they will not enter Mosul itself and will instead focus on retaking Tal Afar, a town to the west that had a Shiite majority before it fell to IS in 2014. They acknowledge having help from Iranian military advisers.

Iraqi forces moving toward the city have made uneven progress since the offensive began Oct. 17. They are four miles from the edge of Mosul on the east-

ern front, where Iraq’s special forces are leading the charge. But advances have been slower in the south, with government forces still 20 miles from the city.

The U.S. military estimates IS has 3,000 to 5,000 fighters inside Mosul and another 1,500-2,500 in the city’s outer defensive belt. The total number includes around 1,000 foreign fighters.

In the hours following the announcement of Shiite reinforcements, five explosions rocked predominantly Shiite neighborhoods of the capital, Baghdad, killing at least 17 people and wounding more than 60, police said.

Police officials said the deadliest of the bombings, a parked car bomb, hit a popular fruit and vegetable market near a school in the northwestern Hurriyah area, killing at least 10 and wounding 34. Other attacks hit the northern Shaab neighborhood, as well as traders’ markets in the Topchi and Zataria areas as well as the poorer Sadr City district.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to brief reporters.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blasts. But IS has stepped up its attacks in response to the offensive in Mosul, and it was possible the group was targeting Shiite areas in retaliation for the Mosul offensive.

Meanwhile, the Iraqi air force said it had landed a C-130 transport aircraft at Qayara air base, on the southern approach to Mosul, opening a key resupply route. IS forces had been leaving explosive booby-traps to slow the advance on Mosul, and the announcement suggested the airstrip was now cleared of such danger.

Earlier, Turkey’s president warned that his government will be closely monitoring the Shiite militias’ behavior in northern Iraq and seek to safeguard the rights of ethnic Turkmens there.

In statements carried by the staterun Anadolu agency, Recep Tayyip Erdogan told reporters that the militia group could prompt a Turkish response if it “terrorizes” the Iraqi-Turkmen town of Tal Afar, where it is headed in its push around Mosul.

The Associated Press CHICAGO – They’ve waited 108 years for a championship. So with this World Series on the verge of slipping away, the Cubs could not wait any longer.

Manager Joe Maddon summoned closer Aroldis Chapman from the bullpen in the seventh inning for the

first eight-out save of his big league career, needing to hold off the Cleveland Indians in Game 5.

As nervous fans fretted at Wrigley Field, Chapman fired his 100 mph heat and preserved the Cubs’ 3-2 win Sunday night, cutting Cleveland’s lead to 3-2.

The Cubs won a Series game at Wrigley for the first time since Game 6 in 1945.

Now, the team that led the majors in wins this year will try to extend its season again Tuesday night when Cubs’ right-hander Jake Arrieta faces Josh Tomlin at Cleveland in Game 6.

The Cubs are trying to become the first club to overcome a 3-1 Series deficit since the 1985 Kansas City Royals and the first to do it by winning Games 6 and 7 on the road since the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates.

Cleveland, in search of its first title since 1948, is in search of its third-ever title and has won the championship at home just once, in 1920.

Chapman hadn’t pitched in the seventh inning since 2012. He threw 42 pitches, 15 of them at least 100 mph.

The lefty struck out four and fanned Jose Ramirez, who had homered earlier, with 101 mph heat to end it.

Memories of ’14 season push Lemont leaders

cherron@shawmedia.com LEMONT – As the 16 remaining teams prepare for the second round of the Class 6A football playoffs, some enjoy a distinct advantage over the remainder of the field.

Five teams in particular have done something that the other squads have not, which is playing for a state championship in the past two years.

A year ago, Montini defeated CreteMonee in the Class 6A finals. And in 2014, Sacred Heart-Griffin beat Montini for the Class 5A title, Lemont was the runner-up in Class 6A, and CaryGrove finished second in Class 7A. All of those extra games played in high-pressure situations usually benefits those involved, and it figures to be no different this season.

That’s one of the many reasons why Lemont coach Bret Kooi and his 10-0 squad are upbeat about their postseason chances as they prepare to host 8-2 Danville on Saturday.

Thirteen players who were on the 2014 Lemont team that fell to Nazareth Academy in the Class 6A finals are on this year’s team, including three who started in that game, defensive lineman Jordan Brown, running back Anthony Martin and linebacker Austin Schaffert.

They’ve been a part of teams that have only lost one regular season game during the past three years.

Those squads have combined for a 32-3 record, which ranks this threeyear period among the best in school history, along with 34-4 squads from 2008-10 and 2010-12.

Kooi, who has coached Lemont during the past three years, likes the way that his veteran squad handled the pressure in its first playoff game after rival Oak Forest scored on an 80-yard run on the first play of scrimmage and threatened to go up 14-0 a short time later. The Indians still only led 21-13 with a quarter left before claiming a 35-13 victory.

“I don’t think there was any situation in there whatsoever where panic happened,” Kooi said. “I think it was more of just ‘wake up boys, we told you so, now we need to get going.’ I was a little disappointed in the second quarter since we had a couple of opportunities to put them in a hole.

But when the dust settled, we moved on, and that’s what the playoffs are all about.

“We’ll celebrate this for a day and have a little bit of fun and then we’ll get back to work. These kids sure don’t like to lose and that’s a big part of their success. It’s just something that’s not in their makeup. Obviously, I think that’s part of this community. There’s a little grit to everything that they do.”

Not surprisingly, many of the top playmakers in the opening-round postseason win were among the group of 13 players who were in on the memorable playoff run two years ago.

Running backs Jake Kirkman and Martin each ran for more than 100 yards and a touchdown, quarterback Spencer Nagel threw for 185 yards and two scores, receivers Austin Nagel and Bret Bolin both caught touchdown passes, and Steven Fleming handled the kicking duties.

tight end Logan Christopherson and Schaffert as players who were on the 2014 runner-up squad.

“Our big guys worked hard and busted their butts all game to not only get myself but everyone else in the end zone,” Martin said. “It’s a collective group effort since my success is their success, as well. Offensively, we’re starting to get our group going and defensively, they’re doing what they’ve been doing all season, which is just keeping us in games.

“A lot of us have been playing together since we were able to football at 6 years old, and Spencer and Austin are my cousins. We’re all from small-town Lemont and I can definitely see that showing now since we’re a collective group. One of the things that I love the most about this team is that everyone is on the same page and we’re all here to get wins.”

The Indians hope to avoid last year’s fate, when they fell at home in the second round to a talented CreteMonee squad that reached the title

game. Crete-Monee and 2015 Class 5A semifinalist St. Laurence lurk in the quarterfinals while perennial power Sacred Heart-Griffin figures to be team to beat for the other semifinal spot in Lemont’s side of the bracket.

“We have a lot of kids who were here two years ago and also played last year,” Brown said. “It’s a pretty tight-knit group, one of the closest football teams that I’ve been a part of here. We played a little football together, so we all know each other really well. The team works really hard to bond together so when we hit a road bump, we can pick each other up.

“When we come off the field, we sit down and work it out and figure out what we did wrong and go back out there and no one gets angry. We want to make sure that we play as a team and win as a team and lose as a team. After going to state two years ago, we want to get back. We’re going to work hard for it since we all have the dream of playing there again.”

The first weekend of the high school football playoffs taught us something.

The Southwest Prairie Conference should not be sold short. Oswego and Oswego East are not the only SPC teams capable of making noise in the postseason.

It was a shame for Joliet West’s sake that the Tigers returned from Oswego on Friday night knowing that their season had ended. That’s what the scoreboard said – 10-9 Oswego, in bold, bright numbers – and that is the deciding vote.

However, what transpired Friday night was a game where neither side lost. You can’t play as well as West did, especially on the defensive side of the ball, against one of the state’s many highly regarded – and unbeaten – Class 8A teams and be labeled anything but a winner.

“That was one heck of a game plan they had,” Oswego coach Brian Cooney said of West, which had lost to Oswego, 7-3, in Week 3. “Their kids played great. It sure was not pretty on our part, but a win is a win in the playoffs.”

So while the Panthers (10-0) move on to face Edwardsville, West (6-4) ends its season with the satisfaction of knowing it was in the playoffs and, once there, showed what it was made of.

Then on Saturday, Plainfield North’s 42-0 domination of Highland Park in a 7A game between 16 and 17 seeds was nothing close to the tossup the seeds would have suggested.

In fact, so well did North play on both sides of the ball that it reminded me of what coach Tim Kane’s team did to Joliet West in a 47-7 Week 9 victory. Perhaps West did not play that poorly that night after all. Maybe that result largely was due to North peaking at the right time.

We should know more about where North stands on a statewide scale next weekend, when the Tigers visit unbeaten Bradley (10-0), the No. 1 seed in the 32-team 7A draw.

Kane said something after Saturday’s blowout that mirrored how I have been feeling about his Tigers.

Thanks largely to the development of junior quarterback Brady Miller, he said that where North is now offensively “is not even close to where we were when we played the two Oswego teams [North lost to Oswego, 12-0, and to Oswego East, 21-14]. Not taking anything away from either of them,

The emergence of Miller and what that has meant to an offense with an abundance of playmakers at his disposal, ready to contribute, serves as the ideal complement to a defense that has been lights out.

Defensive linemen such as Ari Ekowa, Tyshawn Taylor and Leon Santos, with Tim Donnahue and DJ Donofrio flying off the edges, has set the tone. Veteran inside linebackers Will Stoll and JJ Frey are the heart and soul of the unit. Kevin Block is as good a cover corner as you will find, and Anthony Fumagalli is getting the job done at the corner opposite Block.

Safeties Dillon McCarthy and Zach Nadle don’t mind coming up and delivering big hits.

The Tigers have allowed seven points total in the past five games, shutting out everyone but Joliet

West. Highland Park brought a major offensive threat to town in running back/receiver D.J. Penick, and he was limited to a net of 7 yards in 10 carries and 12 yards on three receptions.

“We thought we would have a good defense at the start of the year, with all the kids we had coming back,” Kane said. “But these kids are coachable; they all continue to buy into what we’re doing, and it’s amazing how hard they hit.”

“It helps us all so much when the other team tries to run, and they can’t do it, then they try to pass, and they can’t do that, either,” Block said. “Coach Kane gets us ready with a game plan every week during the week, and we have been executing it.”

Block’s only complaint is that opponents tend to shy away from throwing the ball in his direction.

Who can blame them?

“I hate it,” Block said. “I always want the ball coming my way.”

“Early in the year, teams weren’t throwing Kevin’s way at all,” Kane said. “Now they’re trying to a little, and they’re not having much success.

He is such a great player.”

The trip to Bradley for Round 2 will be a huge challenge for Block and all of his teammates. But after seeing how North whipped Joliet West in Week 9, how West nearly beat Oswego on Friday night and how North got its playoff run rolling against Highland Park, it makes you wonder if North perhaps can play with the best in 7A, and if the SPC deserves a little more love than we have been giving it.

Hmm.

Bradford, Vikings look to bounce back against Cutler, Bears

LAKE FOREST – Sam Bradford was rolling along with the Minnesota Vikings right until he got squashed by his former team last week.

Then again, at least he was playing.

It’s been a while since the Bears’ Jay Cutler could say that.

Bradford tries to shake off a sixsack outing in the Vikings’ first loss when Minnesota meets the returning Cutler and the struggling Bears on Monday night.

Things couldn’t have gone much worse for Bradford and the Vikings (51) in a 21-10 defeat to Philadelphia that seemed to expose their shortcomings and lay out a blueprint for the rest of the league.

“I think we just realized that we’ve got a lot of work to do, but when you look at the film and you look at the things, the mistakes that we made on Sunday, they’re all fixable,” Bradford said.

“A lot of them were just mental mistakes. They’re things that we have done correctly the previous five weeks and just failed to execute or failed to do them correctly on Sunday. So, we’ve just got to get back on track and go out there and be the offense we know we can be.”

The Eagles disguised their blitzes and had their way with the offensive line. It all added up to a rough outing for Bradford .

Besides the six sacks, he absorbed 12 hits, fumbled four times and lost two of them. He also threw an interception.

The Bears (1-6), meanwhile, have struggled through injuries and poor play on offense and defense in their worst start since the 2000 team dropped seven of its first eight. For

Cutler, it hasn’t been easy to watch.

“It’s hard when you’re hurt and not playing, getting back in the mix,” he said. “You just got to keep fighting through it.

“Nothing lasts forever. And I think everyone in the locker room knows that. There’s some talent in the locker room. There’s a lot of guys banged up that hopefully we get back soon. You just got to keep playing football. That’s all we can do.”

They are getting Cutler back from a five-game absence because of a sprained right thumb. But whether they’re welcoming him back with open arms is open to debate.

The Bears have little choice, but to go with him because Brian Hoyer broke his left arm in a 26-10 loss at Green Bay in the previous game.

“I do think that Cutler will give them a lift coming back,” Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said. “He’s a bigtime arm talent. I think that we’re going to have to play very well in order to win.”

There had been plenty of speculation about Cutler’s future with the Bears, particularly with Hoyer playing five-plus games without an interception. Fox only fueled it when he said the starting spot is “performance-based.”

But it’s a moot point now.

Cutler will suit up for the first time since he left against Philadelphia in the second game of the season. The five-game absence will be the longest he has returned from in a season and he’ll be going against the league’s stingiest defense.

“They’re top five in about everything, they’ve been together for a while, they’re relatively healthy and they’re playing good football,” Cutler said.

“They’ve shown a lot of different looks, especially on third downs, but we’ve ... seen a lot of it. We kind of know how to attack it, but it’s just going to be about execution and guys doing exactly what we need to do.”

As for Bradford and the Vikings, Minnesota had been playing well enough to mask its weaknesses and pile up wins despite serious injuries to Teddy Bridgewater and Adrian Peterson.

A big reason was their new quarterback, who was thriving after a trade from Philadelphia on Sept. 3. The Vikings were scrambling for one and made the move just days after Bridgewater suffered his serious knee injury.

Despite a crash course in learning the Vikings’ system, Bradford came into the game against the Eagles with the NFL’s top completion percentage and No. 2 passer rating. But against Philadelphia, things didn’t go so well.

The Eagles disguised blitzes out of zone packages and had their way with a patchwork offensive line.

“I think each defense is different, but obviously, I’m sure Chicago is looking at what they did and what they had success with,” Bradford said. “And I’m sure we’ll see some carry-over, so we’ve got to be prepared to see some of that.”

It was a rough game for the Chiefs (5-2), who lost Smith twice after hits to the head and finished with Charcandrick West as their only healthy running back.

Foles’ 14-yard TD pass to Travis Kelce early in the second quarter made it 10-0. Smith made it 17-7 at halftime with a 13-yard TD pass to Jeremy Maclin, and after Smith’s second departure, Foles hooked up with Tyreek Hill on a 34-yard scoring pass for a 24-7 lead. The Colts are 3-5.

TEXANS 20, LIONS 13: At Houston,

Brock Osweiler helped the Texans remain perfect at home. Osweiler has struggled in his first season in Houston (5-3), but has been better at home where he’s thrown eight of his nine touchdown passes.

Matthew Stafford threw for 240 yards and a touchdown for Detroit (44), which had a three-game winning streak snapped as the Lions were unable to continue a string of late-game comebacks.

JETS 31, BROWNS 28: At Cleveland, Matt Forte ran for 82 yards and a pair of second-half touchdowns, helping the Jets rally to a second straight victory.

Ryan Fitzpatrick shook off an ugly first half to throw for 222 yards and a touchdown while leading the Jets (3-5) on three long scoring drives after spotting the Browns (0-8) a 13-point lead.

FALCONS 33, PACKERS 32: At Atlanta, Matt Ryan threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Mohamed Sanu with 31 seconds remaining, rallying the Falcons.

The Falcons (5-3) snapped a twogame losing streak, driving 75 yards for the winning score after Aaron Rodgers put the Packers (4-3) ahead with his fourth TD pass of the game.

BRONCOS 27, CHARGERS 19: At Denver, the Denver Broncos took turns picking off and pummeling Philip Rivers.

The Broncos (6-2) had a goal-line stand in the closing minutes and picked off Rivers twice more in the second half. They only turned one of those takeaways into points, however, and that allowed the hard-luck Chargers (3-5) to stay in it until the end, forcing Denver to make two stands in the closing minutes.

Johnson wins Martinsville to gain spot in NASCAR’s finale

The Associated Press MARTINSVILLE, Va. – A slot in NASCAR’s record books is absolutely within reach for Jimmie Johnson.

Johnson earned one of four spots in next month’s title-deciding season finale Sunday with his ninth career victory at Martinsville Speedway. The six-time NASCAR champion will race for his seventh championship, which would tie him for the record with Hall of Famers Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt Jr. “I’ve been trying to ignore this conversation about seven, and now I can’t,” said Johnson, who doesn’t particularly want to start thinking about the stakes just yet.

“I’ll probably lie to all of you guys and say I’m not going to think about it at all. But it’s inevitable. Fortunately, I don’t have to think about it for three weeks. But we’re going to enjoy this and savor it. We’re going to get our

ducks in a row for Homestead.”

The victory blocked Joe Gibbs Racing from placing all four of Toyota drivers in the final round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup title. There are only three spots still open in the Nov. 20 finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, and JGR’s hope of sweeping the final four ended Sunday.

Most likely to miss the final? Carl Edwards, who had a tire problem and finished 36th at Martinsville – lowest of the eight Chase drivers. Also in trouble: Stewart-Haas Racing teammates Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch, who finished 20th and 22nd.

Brad Keselowski, eliminated from the Chase last week, finished second and was irritated by a lengthy caution earlier in the race when NASCAR struggled to figure out the running order. Had those laps not been wasted under yellow, Keselowski absolutely believed he could have beat Johnson.

“We don’t need to run 100 laps under yellow with the field, not trying to

figure out where they’re at, and it probably cost us the race,” Keselowski said.

The caution took 29 laps, and left some grumbling the order still wasn’t correct when the race restarted.

“I think the stakes are so high, I really wish we would have red flagged the race, gone, reviewed it and gotten it right,” said third-place finisher Denny Hamlin. “There’s a 100 percent chance it was not right at the end. It changed the running order.

“Hopefully, that doesn’t change what happens going into Homestead.

I know that NASCAR is doing everything they can with the scoring they have and things like that. But you have to get it right. It definitely was not right.”

JGR finished third, fourth and fifth as Hamlin, Matt Kenseth and Kyle Busch are inside the top-four as the series heads to Texas Motor Speedway. But all was not well in the Gibbs camp after the race.

Busch felt Hamlin – finished the

highest by holding up Kenseth and Busch in the waning laps. Although the teammates worked well together on restarts, Busch felt that Hamlin not getting out of the way allowed Johnson to win and Keselowski to finish second.

“We work so good together that we just gave the win to (Johnson). So, JGR all the way,” Busch said. “At the end, you had the slowest Gibbs car holding up the rest of the line, and all we did was let somebody else from another organization pass us and go up there and chase down (Johnson).”

Hamlin disputed Busch’s view.

“I may have held those guys up for a little bit of that final run, but definitely don’t think I was holding anyone up at the end, for sure,” Hamlin said.

Jeff Gordon finished sixth in his final scheduled race as the replacement driver for Dale Earnhardt Jr. It is presumably the final race of Gordon’s career. He retired last season, but was pressed into eight races when Earnhardt suffered a concussion.

REDSKINS 27, BENGALS 27: At London, Washington and Cincinnati (3-4-1) played to the second NFL tie game in seven days, the first time there have been two draws in a season since 1997.

The sold-out crowd of 84,000 at Wembley Stadium left deflated and even puzzled as the regulation-time shootout between Kirk Cousins and Andy Dalton turned into an overtime comedy of errors.

Washington (4-3-1) appeared to have the game won with 2:13 left in overtime, but Dustin Hopkins hooked his 34-yard field goal attempt wide left.

Seattle’s final drive. Russell Wilson took the Seahawks (4-2-1) to the New Orleans 10, where on one final play he lofted a pass toward the corner of the end zone. Jermaine Kearse caught the ball, but landed out of bounds. The Saints are 3-4.

24 BLACKHAWKS 3, KINGS 0 Crawford makes 32 saves, Hawks win The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Corey Crawford made 32 saves, Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa each had a power-play goal and the Blackhawks beat the Los Angeles Kings, 3-0, Sunday night.

Artem Anisimov also scored to extend his career-best point streak to seven games. He has six goals and five assists during the run.

Toews got his first goal of the season – the Hawks’ captain had only three assists in the team’s first eight games.

Hossa scored into an empty net with 1:10 remaining.

Hossa was honored in a pregame ceremony for becoming the 44th player with 500 goals, a milestone he reached Oct. 18.

The Hawks killed both of Los Angeles’ power plays and for the first

time in nine games didn’t allow a power-play goal.

Crawford earned his 20th shutout, and the Kings were blanked for the second straight game. Los Angeles concluded a two-game Midwest swing after losing 1-0 in regulation Saturday at St. Louis. Los Angeles’ Peter Budaj made 26 saves.

Crawford wasn’t heavily tested in this one, but stopped Kyle Clifford point blank with 2:35 left after a turnover. Tyler Toffoli had two good chances in the third.

The Hawks had four power-play chances in the first period, and Toews connected on the first one at 6:54 to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Toews’ wrist shot from the top of the right circle beat Budaj on the glove side while Kings defensemen Jake Muzzin and Tom Gilbert screened Budaj.

The Forest Preserve District of Will County will begin selling 2017 dog park permits on Tuesday.

The permits are valid for the remainder of 2016 and all of 2017. Permits provide access to all five of the District’s off-leash dog parks located at Forked Creek Preserve – Ballou Road Access in Wesley Township, Hammel Woods – DuPage River Access in Shorewood, Lower Rock Run Preserve in Joliet, Messenger Marsh in Homer Glen and Whalon Lake in Naperville.

A sixth dog park is scheduled to open in summer 2017 at Plum Valley Preserve in Crete Township.

The District’s Board of Commissioners approved a new dog park permit fee schedule in October. Some of the fees increased, some decreased and others did not change. The increases and decreases range from $5 to $20, depending on the category. The new fee structure has been simplified from 24 fee categories to eight Dogs must be at least six months old, and rabies tag numbers and expiration dates are required at the time of registration.

One group received standard treatments with hormones or medicines. The other group received an intrauterine device (IUD) that releases a hormone inside the uterus. The IUD, sold under the brand name Mirena, is a type of birth control. Many women using the hormonal IUD for birth control have found it reduces menstrual bleeding.

The study found women assigned to treatment with the IUD: • Had a significant reduction in symptoms over six months.

• Reported a bigger reduction in symptoms than those in the usual treatment group.

• Continued to have improved symptoms for at least two years.

• Reported improvements in: – practical difficulties – social and family life – work and daily routine – psychological and physical health One study, even a large and carefully conducted study like this one, rarely changes practice overnight. But I’m cautiously optimistic this new approach – hormonal IUDs – could become a new treatment option to improve the lives of women with menorrhagia.

Dear Dr. K: I bleed very heavily during my menstrual periods. Is there anything that can be done about this? Or do I just have to put up with the discomfort and inconvenience every month?

Dear Reader: Excessive menstrual bleeding (the medical term is menorrhagia) is a common problem. In my experience, a few primary-care doctors tell their patients just to “live with it.” Not surprisingly, obstetrician/gynecologists are more likely to recognize excessive menstrual bleeding as a problem that needs treatment.

Many women take medication or hormones or have surgery for this problem.

But a recent study suggests an implantable device also may be able to help control excessive menstrual bleeding.

“Excessive blood flow” can be tricky to define since actual measurement is difficult. Your menstrual bleeding might be excessive if you: • Have to change a pad every hour for at least three hours; • Have to get up during the night to change a pad; • Pass large clots; • Develop anemia from blood loss.

It’s also important to consider the impact of heavy menstrual bleeding on your life. You may have menorrhagia if heavy bleeding impairs your social, physical or emotional life.

Current treatment options include taking hormones to help regulate bleeding. Medications also are available. One drug encourages blood to clot; another blocks production of a substance involved in menstrual bleeding. Another option is surgery to remove the lining of the uterus or the uterus itself (hysterectomy). Many women try multiple treatments in search of one that works.

DEAR ABBY My 34-year-old daughter, “MarJeanne tha,” is a single Phillips mom. I adore my granddaughter.

Martha needs me to give her $500 a month, plus cover emergencies (new tires, hospital bills for baby, etc.) to get by. She has said repeatedly she wants to have another baby before she’s 35.

Abby, it’s a financial burden to help her as much as we have. My husband (her stepdad) believes, along with me, we should help until her finances improve. Martha is awash in student debt and has a low-paying job. She lives 12 hours away, so we have to fly out to see them, which means we don’t see them often.

My question: How can I tell her having a second baby when she can’t support the first is something I can’t handle financially? I am becoming resentful. Our retirement has been dismal because all our money is going to her.

My daughter has a hair-trigger temper and would use access to my granddaughter as leverage to keep the money coming. I’m appalled she’s in this position and upset I have to pay for her choices. – Appalled In Ohio Dear Appalled: You don’t have to pay for your daughter’s choices. Tell Martha as an adult it is her responsibility – not yours – to provide for herself and her child, and if she becomes pregnant before her finances improve to the point she’s self-supporting, not to expect one more penny from you.

Please consider starting to reduce the amount you give her and set a deadline beyond which you no longer will supplement her income. Martha may need to find a second job, but that’s better than you spending all your retirement money shouldering her responsibilities.

Expect her to be angry. If she threatens to blackmail you with access to your grandchild, tell her the person she’ll be punishing is the little one, not you, and stick to your guns.

Dear Abby: My husband has bought different pieces of equipment over the years. He recently bought a small tractor he’s very proud of and enjoys using around our property. He also has bought a large trailer he often uses to haul his equipment and other things.

His problem is friends who seem to think they can help themselves to his stuff. They actually have the audacity to say, “I may borrow your tractor, trailer, etc., tomorrow.” I find this to be rude in that they are not asking – they are telling him they will.

I told him to say he doesn’t loan his equipment out, but he can’t seem to be able to say that. In bridge, if everyone had the same thoughts, the bidding and play of a given deal would always be the same. But, of course, that doesn’t happen. Also, several deals give both sides, declarer and the defense, a chance to do something clever.

Today, we will look at the declarer-play in this deal. Tomorrow, we will turn to the defenders. South is in five diamonds. How should he plan the play after West cashes two spade tricks, then shifts to a heart?

The bidding was complicated.

North had to pass on the first round because he had no five-card suit and was too short in hearts for a takeout double. North’s second-round twospade cue-bid showed a strong hand: at least a good 12 points opposite South’s balancing double. North’s three-spade cue-bid was an unsuccessful attempt to get into three no-trump.

To make the contract, South had to play the trump suit without loss.

Who had the diamond queen?

Declarer counted up the high-card points. He had 15, and dummy held 13. That left only 12 outstanding, but since West had opened the bidding, he had to have the diamond queen.

South played a diamond to his king at trick four, then ran the diamond jack through West. When that won, declarer drew the last trump and claimed.
