JOLIET – The Rialto Square Theatre expects to end the year with a deficit nearing $700,000 as it prepares to ask the city to continue an annual subsidy that could be at risk for 2017.

VenuWorks, the third-party management company hired to run the Rialto, is preparing a business plan that would be sent to city officials Friday along with a request for funding next year.

That plan will show VenuWorks’ long-term strategy for reducing the city subsidy needed to sustain the Rialto, said John Siehl, chief operating officer for the company.

Joliet has contributed $600,000 annually to the Rialto for several years, but some city officials, including Mayor Bob O’Dekirk, have questioned the future of that subsidy.

Siehl was at a Rialto board meeting Wednesday where the main topic of discussion was the theater finances and the potential for a grant from Joliet for 2017.

“I think we have a very good feel for the financial piece of the puzzle as we go forward with the grant request,” Siehl told the board.

The Rialto debt has grown over several months, and the projection of a year-end deficit close to $700,000 indicates that management expects bills to continue adding up through December.

The Rialto currently has bills totaling $570,000 with $74,000 in cash on hand, Finance Manager Dale Evans reported to the board. Evans projected a year-end deficit of $695,000.

Board member Vicki Murphy noted that the theater’s accounts payable are “constantly going up.”

University Park murder trial underway in Joliet

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Five years to the day after a 19-year-old man was slain in a University Park park, his accused killer’s trial began.

Tommie Crockwell Sr., 46, of Country Club Hills, lay in wait for Johnny B. Rouse, of University Park, to walk through Craig Park on the night of Oct. 26, 2011, to get revenge for Rouse robbing his younger brother, Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Daniel Egan told jurors Wednesday.

Board Chairman Dan Vera said the business plan that goes to city officials will be “straight-forward, out in front, full disclosure.”

Vera said the proposed city budget coming out next week will not include funding for the Rialto. But Rialto representatives will be able to make a case to add that funding at the City Council’s first workshop meeting on the budget.

“We all knew that there was not going to be anything in the budget – the draft budget – that comes out Tuesday,” Vera said.

Vera also said he met with O’Dekirk this week to discuss the budget process and Rialto funding. He described the meeting as “very positive.”

O’Dekirk at a town hall meeting later on Wednesday told the Herald-News that he agreed with Vera that it was “a good meeting.” But the mayor said it was too early to say what the city may give the Rialto in 2017 since the City Council will get its first look at the proposed budget on Tuesday.

“There’s clearly going to be a debate – a healthy debate,” O’Dekirk said. “It’s premature without seeing the whole budget to discuss one item.”

Anton Davis, who grew up with Crockwell Sr., went to the police to report his longtime friend had told him about the ambush.

Law enforcement paid Davis to wear a wire and record a 33-minute conversation with Crockwell Sr. while the two men played a video game on Jan. 12, 2012.

Egan said jurors will hear that recording later this week.

On the tape, Crockwell Sr. told Davis he waited in the bushes until Rouse walked by, and then “pounced out” and shot him once in the back of the head, Egan said.

“Something could have gone wrong.

I could’ve shot him 10 or 15 times and he could’ve lived and identified me [if I’d faced him],” Crockwell Sr. allegedly said. “One through the old cranium and I wasn’t worried about it.”

es and discarded them in various areas around town. “[The] police will never find it. [I] watch too much ‘CSI,’ ” Crockwell Sr. allegedly was recorded saying.

Defense attorney Sam Adam acknowledged the tape will show Crockwell Sr. saying those things, but he’s discussing a crime he didn’t commit.

“Everybody around University Park was saying it was his [then 20-yearold] son Tommie Crockwell Jr. [who] did the shooting,” Adam said. “Tommie Crockwell Jr. went to the hospital that same night with a gunshot wound to his wrist.”

Adam said Crockwell Sr. was acting as a protective parent to make it seem that he was responsible.

“I hate to say this, but [my client] isn’t the brightest man on Earth,” Adam told the jury. “He had a stupid plan so they don’t go after his son in retaliation ... so they don’t take his boy away.”

The trial will continue Thursday.

mmallory@shawmedia.com HOMER GLEN – Kari Winge has been coming to Bengtson’s Pumpkin Fest for as long as she can recall.

Her favorite part is the Fun Barn.

“It’s just the same as I remember from when I was a kid,” said Winge, thinking back to the field trips she and many Will County-area students took.

“It hasn’t changed a bit.”

Winge, of Evergreen Park, on Monday was part of a nearly 15-person playdate group of parents and children.

They go each autumn to pumpkin-oriented destinations that fall somewhere between farm and theme park.

The group has learned it’s better to go on weekdays, so the parents took off work a month in advance.

“This is our big fall fest,” she said.

Christine Torres, her husband and her daughter, Natalie Torres, 9, also went Monday to Bengtson’s. They’ve gone every year since Natalie was born, except last year.

“There’s always something new and something better,” said Torres, of Chicago.

She said going to a pumpkin patch is fun, but after you pick out a pumpkin, you go home, carve it and you’re done.

The intrigue of places such as Bengtson’s, she said, are the rides and entertainment that come with it.

In recent years, Bengtson’s has added food trucks – El Taco Cocina by Anna, Uncle Bub’s BBQ and Wooden Paddle Pizza – to the usual aroma of funnel cakes, apple cider and kettle corn that wafts through the air.

Competitors such as Heap’s Giant Pumpkin Farm in Minooka and BronkBerry Farms in Plainfield have

emerged, while mainstays Siegel’s Cottonwood Farm in Lockport, Konow’s Corn Maze in Lockport, Johansen Farms in Bolingbrook and Dollinger Family Farm in Channahon remain popular.

Each tries to offer something different as the trend of “agritourism” continues to help rural economies, Will County Farm Bureau Manager Mark Schneidewind said, adding the county has worked closely with the farming community as such places continue to pop up. However, smaller producers of fall-time goods in the area are starting to feel the pinch, Schneidewind said.

“A lot more people are getting into agritourism,” he said of pumpkin farms. “It used to be you could drive down [Route] 52 or [Route] 45 and see one or two, now there’s four or five, which makes it convenient for the

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Whether it was bathing dogs or cleaning cages, several Plainfield high school students got an idea of what it was like to work with pets at Joliet Township Animal Control.

Students came to the agency Wednesday as part of an annual Disability Mentoring Day event organized by the Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living. The event gives students with disabilities from high schools in Will County the chance to experience career paths.

Madyson Meyers, a Plainfield North High School senior, said she likes working with animals.

“Animals and kids, but I think animals a lot,” Meyers said.

She worked with Aubree Schillinger, a Plainfield Central High School senior, cleaning cat cages.

Other students took dogs for a walk and bathed them.

Students also were at about 50 other organizations and businesses Wednesday for job shadowing and work. Missy Martin, Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living program manager, said students are matched with their area of interest.

They can ask questions and work with people in careers they’re interested in.

Sarah Gimbel, Joliet Township Animal Control director, said the Joliet-based agency has participated in the mentoring event for the past several years.

She said it’s a great program that allows dogs to have more socialization and playtime while also allowing students to see what a career in

animal control or care is like.

She said the event exposes more people in the community to what animal control does and helps change negative perceptions about it.

“Hopefully [the students] go home and tell some friends and family and [it] changes that image,” Gimbel said.

North vocational education coordinator, said she was grateful an opportunity such as Disability Mentoring Day was being offered to students.

“It’s an incredible effort. I think it’s so important for kids, regardless of their situation. I think students need to access the community more to see what they want to do,” Donckers said.

New Lenox police investigate Fire damages second floor of robbery at BMO Harris Bank Crest Hill home Wednesday

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX — New Lenox police are investigating a robbery that took place Wednesday at BMO Harris Bank.

The robbery occurred about 12:13 p.m. at the Harris branch at 110 W. Maple St. Deputy Police Chief Robert Pawlisz said a man about 45 years old, entered the bank, walked up to the teller and demanded money.

According to Bandit Tracker Chica-

go, a website run by federal, county and local law enforcement agencies, as well as partners in the Chicago banking industry, the suspect has a medium build, stands about 5 feet 9 inches in height and was wearing a grey sweatshirt.

The teller gave him the money and he left. Pawlisz said the amount of money stolen is not known yet.

Lockport Township Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Frank Blaskey said crews were called at 3:10 p.m. to the 16400 block of Newbury Court and found “heavy fire” coming from the second floor. Blas-

key said one child had been in the residence when the fire started, but the child was able to escape.

“We went in with a [hose] line and made an offensive attack to put it out, which took about 30 minutes,” Blaskey said.

The fire caused a large amount of damage to the second floor of the house. Blaskey said Wednesday afternoon the cause of the fire still was under investigation, but it did not appear to be suspicious.

A federal grand jury in Chicago has indicted a Morris man on attempted murder charges for trying to kill two officers during a drug sting turned shootout outside the Louis Joliet Mall in Joliet, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office distributed Wednesday.

Adan Godinez, 31, of Morris, shot at the officers Aug. 30 during the undercover operation in a parking lot of the mall between JC Penney and Macy’s, the news release stated.

In addition to attempted murder, Godinez is charged with conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute a controlled substance, possession with the intent to distribute a controlled substance, possession of a firearm in

furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and brandishing and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence, according to the news release.

Co-defendant Fernan- Adan do Godinez, 44, of Cicero, Godinez also was at the scene of the incident, the news release stated. He is charged with conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute a controlled substance, possession with the intent to distribute a controlled substance, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

Arraignments are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Thursday before Judge Susan E. Cox, according to the news release.

The sting was arranged after Adan Godinez agreed to sell cocaine to an undercover DEA task force officer, the news release stated.

The defendants drove toFernando gether, allegedly with 2 Godinez kilograms of cocaine, to meet the officer, at which point Adan Godinez got out of their car and entered the officer’s vehicle.

After Adan Godinez allegedly provided four packages of cocaine to the officer, other law enforcement personnel approached to arrest him. Adan Godinez saw law enforcement coming, got out of the officer’s vehicle, pulled out a firearm and shot at the officers, according to the news release. An exchange of gunfire ensued.

Adan Godinez was shot in the leg but survived. No officers were injured. Police found a Sig Sauer P229 where Adan Godinez fell, and officers found a loaded Smith & Wesson 9mm in the back waistband of Fernando Godinez’s pants, according to previous Herald-News reports, which stated that Fernando Godinez also had another clip in his pocket.

Both defendants were arrested in the parking lot and have remained in custody without bond.

The charges against Adan Godinez carry a mandatory minimum sentence of 35 years in prison and a maximum sentence of life, the news release stated.

The charges against Fernando Godinez are punishable by a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years and a maximum of life.

Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – An intergovernmental agreement with the state of Illinois, along with more than $500,000 in matching grant funds, means the village of Minooka finally will be able to begin construction on the first half of the Three Rivers Bike Trail.

Village trustees approved the agreement Tuesday, along with engineering services with Robinson Engineering.

Discussion of a bike trail that would keep bikers and walkers safely off McEvilly Road and eventually connect to Channahon began back in 1999.

While the village would have liked to get funding for the entire project, it ended up with funding for half of it – the first half, Minooka Mayor Pat Brennan said.

The first half will connect Lions Park to Rivers Edge Drive.

The state will cover 80 percent of the

cost of the phase through the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program.

The balance comes from the village’s motor fuel tax fund and $100,000 each supplied by Grundy and Will counties.

Brennan recognized Will County Board member Don Gould, R-Shorewood, who was in the audience, for helping to push through the project.

“This has been a long-term project the board has been working on, long before most of us were here,” Village Administrator Dan Duffy said.

Work could conceivably begin this fall if weather permits. The state will hold the bid opening Nov. 4.

Financial adviser Kevin McCanna of Speer Financial said the village was able to procure the lower rate because it has maintained a good bond rating at AA-.

JOLIET – The Galowich Family YMCA on Wednesday showcased a new wellness center and fitness studio with some comments on how things have changed since the days when exercise equipment was crammed into a hallway.

That hallway now is called the Healthy Living Corridor and includes the recently opened facilities.

“This project has been four or five months in the making, and it’s really been a lot of work,” Executive Director Danny Rubio said at a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The wellness center where barbells, treadmills and exercise equipment are located has been improved with the addition of more windows, carpeting, additional equipment and new televisions.

The fitness studio is new, having been created out of the last racquetball court remaining from when the Galowich building at 749 Houbolt Road opened 40 years ago.

The improvements will allow for more fitness programs and better space for such activities as yoga classes, Rubio said.

“Now, it’s a very inviting space,” he

He described the fitness facility as “my sanctuary.”

The sanctuary has become more pleasant. Schelling recalled memories from his youth when the fitness equipment was located in the hallway that now leads to both of the new rooms.

Over time, the Galowich YMCA has converted racquetball courts to other uses, moving fitness equipment out of the hallway. The wellness center was created out of former racquetball courts as the popularity of the sport faded.

The latest improvements include new TV sets. Those who use the treadmills have the option of watching TV or looking outside through the new windows created out of the formerly allwalled racquetball courts.

“It’s easy on the eyes now,” Michael Taylor, sports and fitness director at Galowich, said of the wellness center. “It doesn’t look like a basement.”

New equipment includes a Bravo functional trainer and a squat rack for free weights.

Galowich plans to add new programs to make use of the improvements, including youth fitness and sport-specific training.

Do you support a tax hike or hikes to balance Illinois’ budget? Explain.

A tax increase in Illinois will not solve anything. In January of 2011, Illinois Democrats passed a record tax increase that was packaged and sold as a “sure thing to save education” to get Illinois out of the fiscal mess that Madigan and the Dems have perpetuated. It did nothing to save education, solve the unfunded pension crisis or lower property taxes. Illinois cannot tax its residents to get out of debt. Tough decisions have to be made. It’s time to stop playing politics in Springfield, roll our sleeves up and get to work. I held the line on taxes when we faced fiscal challenges in Grundy County. Real reform must take place before I will ever consider new taxes.

I am in support of the graduated income tax and the millionaires tax. Both taxes are fairer than the system that we currently have in Illinois today.

Do you support any part of Gov. Bruce Rauner’s Turnaround Agenda? Explain.

Illinois has the second-highest property taxes in the nation, I agree with the governor that we must freeze property taxes. Illinois has the longest-serving speaker of the house in American history; Madigan’s leadership has led us into a fiscal nightmare and seemingly endless debt. In order to restore confidence in Illinois government we must impose term limits for legislators and senators. I also agree with consolidating units of government where it makes sense, like the governor’s proposal to combine the office of treasurer and comptroller, saving $12 million annually from merely two units consolidating into one. We have nearly 7,000 units of government in Illinois and reform is long overdue.

I would be open to looking at term limits, but in what manner does the Turnaround Agenda help the middle class? I do not want to negatively impact hard-working middle class families. I have yet to see how this agenda helps those families.

Illinois’ state pensions are underfunded by more than $110 billion, worst in the nation. One pension reform law has been thrown out as unconstitutional. What’s your plan to reform the state’s pension systems?

There is no denying that Illinois’ pension debt is “crowding out” funding for vital basic services. For decades politicians gave out sweetheart deals in exchange for short term political gain; now we are footing the bill for their shortsightedness. The state employees are not to blame for this mess, the politicians are. As stated by the courts, all benefits earned are guaranteed by the Illinois State Constitution. We must begin by stopping the bleeding; new employees should be allowed to contribute to their own defined contribution retirement savings plan like a 401(k) or 403(b) if they choose.

Anyone who suggests there is a quick fix to the pension crisis simply isn’t telling you the truth. We will have to work within the confines of court rulings to craft a workable pension reform that protects retirees, those near retirement and taxpayers who are already paying too much to Illinois’ dysfunctional government.

We have to operate within the framework of the state constitution. I would push for the previously mentioned graduated income tax and the millionaires tax. The system is underfunded due to the state skipping pension payments and the lack of revenue to pay into the system.

What project in your district, unrelated to tax or budget issues, will be your top priority if elected?

We have great infrastructure in the 75th and we need to make sure that our roads, bridges and railways are well maintained. With that being said, I will also fight to make sure that projects that have no benefit, or harm the 75th district, are stopped (like the Rock Island Clean Line and Great Lakes Basin Railroad).

Creation of good paying jobs. Lowering the property tax burden. I think we need to take a look at the education equalization formula especially when it comes [to] funding per pupil.

No, Illinois does not have a revenue problem, Illinois has a spending problem. We have the highest property taxes in the nation, in addition to high sales taxes and income taxes.

Some studies report that Illinois taxpayers bear one of the highest tax burdens in the nation. It’s time for state government to get our spending under control and enact political

reforms like term limits and independent redistricting to end the culture of corruption in Springfield. Until our elected officials demonstrate they can act responsibly with our taxpayer dollars, Illinoisans should not be asked to pay more for the same dysfunctional government.

Do you support any part of Gov. Bruce Rauner’s Turnaround Agenda? Explain. for self-service and power accumulation, and I will fight that broken system every step of the way. That’s why I support redistricting reform and term limits for elected officials. We also need reforms to grow our economy. Illinois homeowners face the highest property taxes in the nation, and out-of-control property taxes are a leading cause of the massive exodus of jobs and working families out of Illinois. A property tax freeze is long overdue. If we want to grow jobs and give working families a pay raise, we need to be economically competitive with our neighboring states.

We need to be a state that keeps our promises. The state has an obligation to make good on its promise to workers who entered one of the public pension systems.

However, Illinois needs to stop making promises it can’t keep. We should move future workers over to a 401(k)-style system, similar to the private sector, to control costs and ensure the state can’t retroactively cut pension benefits. State workers deserve the freedom and flexibility to have control over their own retirements and determine how their investments are made. I also support the “consideration” proposal put forward

by Gov. Rauner and President Cullerton. Giving state workers a voluntary choice over

which new benefits to receive in exchange for changing their own pension plan is a win for both taxpayers and state workers. Furthermore, a “lump-sum” buyout option provides state workers another voluntary choice to determine their own retirements while reducing Illinois’ massive unfunded pension liability. State workers should have a say in their investments for the future. I wholeheartedly agree with the Illinois Supreme Court’s interpretation of the constitution’s pension clause that [a] pension reform proposal cannot diminish or impair already contracted and earned pension benefits.

What project in your district, unrelated to tax or budget issues, will be your top priority if elected?

One proposed issue that would adversely affect our community is the Great Lakes Basin Railroad project, which I oppose. While I am an advocate for investment in infrastructure to help our state maintain its status as a regional and national trade hub, I am unequivocally opposed to projects that do so at the expense of Illinois farmers and our rural communities, particularly projects that use our state’s eminent domain authority for private gain, which my opponent supports. Agriculture is the backbone of Illinois’ economy. A project that seizes thousands of acres of prime farmland in our communities

and threatens our soil and water resources across Illinois is not the way forward for our state. In addition to threatening farmers and homeowners, this project has the potential to endanger the financial viability of local school districts and municipalities by potentially reducing property values and revenue. I’m proud to stand with the concerned citizens of our community and the members of the Block GLB Railroad movement to oppose this project.

Fundamentally reforming state government is vital to fixing our state’s problems. I agree with some of Gov. Rauner’s proposals, such as political reform like term limits and redistricting reform. I disagree with the governor’s approach to labor issues and his insistence on right to work. I believe we need to stop talking with political catchphrases and start talking about the policies we need to get Illinois back on track. Professional, career politicians have no place serving in the General Assembly. Public servants are supposed to be citizens who represent their communities for a short period of time, then return home to continue their lives. The broken system we have today only allows

But on the flip side, he said some of the smaller family operations that have been around 20 to 25 years have reported declines in sales.

Some farmers have established relationships with grocery stores and hardware stores to supply them with pumpkins and other seasonal products.

Meanwhile, he said, other pumpkin farms are so popular that they can’t grow enough pumpkins to meet the demand, so they buy from growers south of Will County.

Illinois produces more pumpkins than any other state, according to the University of Illinois Extension. In 2015, amid a down year for pumpkin production in the state, Illinois still produced 317.9 million pounds of pumpkins – more than twice as many as California, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

All 50 states produce pumpkins, but about half of the total are grown in six states, according to the department’s economic research service. Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and New York are other states known for pumpkin production.

OBITUARIES RANDAL E. ADDAMS SR. Randal E. Addams Sr. “Randy” passed away suddenly Saturday, October 22, 2016. Age 55 years.

Survived by his son, A.J. Addams (Ashley Norman) and his daughter, Danielle Addams, both of Joliet. His girlfriend, Cathy Blahut; grandsons, Michael, Stanley and Jake. His little buddy, Kingston; two sisters, Kathy Brady and Beth (John) Patrick. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many many friends also survive.

Preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Mary (nee Wallace) Addams; and one brother, Rusty Addams.

Scott Alan Berger, 60, of Shorewood, IL and formerly of Waterloo and Denver, IA passed away on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with

cancer.

Scott was born on December 6, 1955 to Dallas and Patricia Berger. He graduated from Denver High School in 1974. As a young man he was an Eagle Scout and often told stories of his outdoor adventures with the scouts. He worked as a Cement Mason and later an Operator Engineer in the Chicago area; retiring in 2011. Scott enjoyed spending time with family, especially with his two grandsons, playing golf, traveling, landscaping (he had a green thumb), and playing with his dog, Dino.

PHYLLIS H. BROWN Born: August 27, 1928 Died: October 19, 2016

Phyllis H. (Callen, Costello) Brown, age 88, passed away on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at Villa Health and Rehabilitation Center in Deland, Florida. She was born August 27, 1928 in Milwaukee, WI to the late John and Anna Callen.

She married her second husband, Marshall Brown, in June 1975 in Joliet, IL. They enjoyed traveling the globe together and had a way of showing up at their children’s homes at any time. She had a knack for knowing when they needed one of her surprise visits. She was always there with a smile and words of advice.

She was direct and honest - no one ever had to wonder what Phyllis thought! In addition, she was quick-witted, funny, an avid bingo player and a penny poker whiz.

She is survived by her loving husband, Marshall Brown; and her 6 children, Sue Perry of La Crescenta, CA, William (Beth) Costello of Deland, FL, Dennis (Jill) Costello of Wilmington, IL, Terrance Costello of St. Petersburg, FL, Gerald (Kris) Costello of Tacoma, WA, and Nancy (Gary) MacBain of Melbourne, FL; numerous stepchildren; grandchildren; great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Robert Costello; her sister, Silvia Doxsee; brother in law, James Doxsee; and her brother, Joseph Callen.

MARILYN MILLER Marilyn Miller, beloved Sister, Aunt, Friend and Educator passed into Eternal Life on Sunday morning, October 9, 2016.

Born in Mattoon, Illinois, she loved spending time riding horses on the Miller family farm and churning butter for her grandmother. She obtained a Bachelor’s degree from Eastern Illinois University and moved to Paris, Illinois for her first teaching position. She later moved to Antioch, Illinois where she discovered a love for Modern Dance instruction. She spent the remainder of her professional career as the Physical Education instructor at Lockport West, later known as Romeovillle High School, from 1970 to 1993.

Marilyn was known for her love of students and became the faculty sponsor of the Girls Athletic Association (GAA). Her students were her “kids” and she inspired many young adults like Terri Trachler (Birdsall) to stay in school through graduation. Terri states “she is one of those once-in-a-lifetime teachers that you have the fondest memories of laughing, crying, carrying on and having fun.” She arranged yearly adventures to the family home at Lake Mattoon which are remembered fondly by many students. She also enjoyed being the school badminton coach for many years.

She is survived by one sister, Sandy Love (Paul), Nieces Shannon Bowles (Charles Robert “Bob”) and Paula Turner (Michael).

A private graveside service for immediate family members will be held in Windsor, Illinois.

Marilyn will be forever greatly missed by her lifelong friends, Joyce Lindstrom of Plainfield and Rita Siedler of Crest Hill, Illinois. Additionally, she leaves behind her beloved animals Dogs: Doti and Scruffy and Cats: Unique, Abby, Hollister, Rascal, Gypsy and Little Bits.

ARTHUR PAUL WILHELMI Arthur Paul Wilhelmi D.D.S., age 89. After a full and meaningful life, Dr. Arthur Paul Wilhelmi is at rest and home now with his Lord.

Art’s valiant and loving heart, weakened by 46 years of heart disease, has stopped beating. Yet his spirit is more alive than ever.

Art was born March 22, 1927 in Joliet, the son of the late Arthur C. and Anne (Barthelme) Wilhelmi.

He was a lifelong resident. Art grew up in Joliet’s St. John the Baptist Parish and attended grade school there with many fond memories graduating with the Class of 1940. During his senior year at Joliet Catholic High School, Art and a senior classmate enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. Art spent the remainder of the war in Alaska as a radio operator. Art’s father was allowed by Joliet Catholic to accept Art’s high school diploma, graduating with the Class of 1944. Upon coming home from the service Art attended St. Bede’s Preparatory School for the seminary, then Joliet Junior College, Washington University and he graduated from the St. Louis School of Dentistry with the Class of 1955. He loved dentistry and his patients, serving the community for 40 years. Art loved playing cards, the piano, guitar and golf with his

buddies, as well as picnics at Coal City with the Adler and Hills families. He thoroughly enjoyed traveling and most of all, being with his beloved family.

Survived by his loving wife, Mary Beth (Adler) Wilhelmi of Joliet; children, Steve (Sara) Wilhelmi and their children, Adam (Nikki), Jason and Alex (Savanna) Wilhelmi; Mimi (Tyler) Ford and her children, Matthew (Danielle) Emich, Elena (Scott) Perlman and Tommy Emich; David (Maggie) Wilhelmi and children, Katelyn, Erin and Sheila Wilhelmi; Lauri (Gary) Scott and children, Patrick, Justin, Ethan and Andrew Scott; Kati (Mike) Bennett and children, Colleen, Tim and Stephen Bennett; A.J. Martin A. Urba, LCPC, CAADC, age 64, entered into eternal life on Saturday, October 22, 2016.

Martin is survived by one brother, Tom (Sharon) Urba; one sister, Dolores (the late Adolph) Barauskas; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Julia (nee Stoskus) Urba; brother, Charles N. (Betty) Urba.

Martin was a longtime resident of Crest Hill, IL. He worked as a counselor at a number of alternative schools and recently retired from Guardian Angel Home Dillard Harris School.

He was a member of the JJC Chorale. Martin performed with the JJC Theatre Department in plays such as “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” as Big Daddy. He graduated from Brother Rice High School in the Class of 1970 and University of Illinois Champaign where he earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees. Martin was a dedicated Chicago Bears and White Sox fan. He enjoyed the simple joys of life such as gardening, nature, friendships, and family.

CHICAGO – The first question on Illinois’ ballots in the next month’s election isn’t for president or senator, but a constitutional amendment aimed at preventing transportation-related funding from being spent on other purposes.

Despite widespread bipartisan support, some opponents have begun to surface, including social service groups that think it’s unfair to protect transportation over other issues.

The proposal – the sole constitutional amendment on the ballot – seeks to protect money generated through transportation-related sources such as tolls.

WASHINGTON – His presidential dreams increasingly in question, Donald Trump pushed his business empire to the center of his political campaign Wednesday. Taking a break from battleground states, he made the case at his newest hotel that all Americans should look to his corporate record for evidence of how well he’d run the country.

Hillary Clinton agreed, but not the way he meant it. She used campaign events in Florida to attack the GOP nominee for having “stiffed American workers,” saying he built his empire with Chinese-manufactured steel, overseas products and labor from immigrants in the country illegally.

“Donald Trump is the poster boy for everything wrong with our economy,” she told several thousand supporters in Tampa, Florida.

“He refuses to pay workers and contractors.”

Trump’s political aspirations have long been deeply intertwined with promoting his corporate goals. He announced his campaign in the gilded lobby of Trump Tower in Manhattan and has held dozens of campaign events at his own properties. His remarks at his new Washington hotel, which has struggled to fill rooms amid the controversy surrounding his presidential bid, came after a visit Tuesday to his Doral golf course outside Miami.

“Under budget and ahead of schedule. So important. We don’t hear those words so often, but you will,” said Trump, linking the hotel redevelopment – just blocks from the White House – to his promised performance as pres-

ident. “Today is a metaphor for what we can accomplish for this country.”

Although the GOP nominee focused his remarks on his political message, the event was heavy with marketing, too. Standing under glittering chandeliers, top company executives, including his daughter, touted the hotel. And after his brief speech, Trump and his family headed to the hotel’s grand lobby where they cut a wide red ribbon with golden scissors before he flew to North Carolina for what his campaign billed as an urban policy speech.

In Charlotte, Trump unveiled what he billed a “New Deal for black America” in front of a mostly white crowd. Trump, who has struggled to earn the support of minority voters, bemoaned that “too many African-Americans have been left behind” and unveiled a handful of new proposals aimed at revitalizing impoverished urban areas.

They included new tax incentives for inner cities, new micro-loans for African Americans to start companies and hire workers and reinvesting money from suspended refugee programs in inner cities.

He also wants cities to be able to seek federal disaster designations to help them rebuild infrastructure, demolish abandoned buildings and invest in law enforcement.

As Trump cut the ribbon, Clinton was slamming his business practices in Florida, a state he must win to have any chance Nov. 8. In Tampa, she was introduced by restaurateur Jose Andres, a naturalized U.S. citizen who pulled out of the Washington hotel to protest Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric. Trump and Andres are locked in litigation over the deal.

Don’t be swayed by market volatility during election season As we enter into the homestretch of the 2016 presidential election, there still is much uncertainty. Questions of which candidate will win and what policies they will enact are looming among the electorate – and for those with an eye on the markets.

If there’s one thing the markets generally don’t like, it is uncertainty.

Large geopolitical events like the Brexit, disruptions in oil supply and demand, or presidential elections can lead to market swings.

Investors tend to become unnerved when they can’t see more than a few months down the road, which can cause them to sell or allocate assets into safer areas. With the presidential election specifically, potential shifts in economic or tax policy are top of mind for many investors, as they may impact the economy and job market in different ways.

Even during periods of uncertainty, you should not let apprehension override common sense when it comes to your investment strategy.

Here are a few things to keep in mind.

Presidential elections are a regular event in our country. And while it might take some time for the nation to adjust to new leadership, all eventually settles. The markets are no different.

While there may be volatility in the short term, it is important to keep a long-term mindset. In fact, where we are in the business cycle has historically had a greater impact on corporate earnings, and thus market returns, than which party is in charge.

Further, the size of returns has been more closely associated with economic expansions and downturns, rather than the Oval Office occupant.

On the whole, investors are better served tailoring investments based on the overarching situation in the

market, as opposed to any spurts of volatility brought on by election rhetoric or the eventual outcome.

Economic indicators

In addition to the business cycle, economic indicators such as consumer confidence, jobs reports, inflation and housing data can help to provide a more accurate barometer of the economy. In addition, moves by the Federal Reserve, such as their recent decision to hold interest rates steady in September, can be taken as a signal of the overall state of the economy.

Basing your investment decisions off of a holistic assessment of the markets and your long-term goals can help you avoid making emotional decisions in response to market fluctuations.

Approval ratings

Historically, presidential approval ratings and the markets have had little correlation. In other words, this signals that the overall opinion of the performance of the president has

little bearing on performance in the markets.

It’s important to remember that one person or one party does not hold the keys to the markets. While the president may be a factor, there are always multiple forces at play.

So, as you cast your vote this fall, remember that market fluctuations are a common byproduct of elections, and investing for decades – not days – is key. Keeping focus on the long term and avoiding impulsive decisions based on what might happen can help keep your finances on track into the future.

cherron@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – Two sets of Wildcats met up on Wednesday in the Class 3A Bolingbrook Sectional semifinals with vastly different resumes throughout the years.

Plainfield Central was making its sectional debut while Neuqua Valley was playing in its 18th match at the sectional level or beyond during the

past 15 seasons.

While Neuqua was the No. 3 seed in the sectional, Central entered as the No. 15 seed. The Naperville squad was 7-1-2 in its last 10 matches and had five losses compared with nine for Plainfield.

But none of that meant much when the teams squared off for the opportunity to advance to Saturday’s 2 p.m. championship against top-seed Naperville North.

As the match went on, both sides

had their chances, but as the match went into two overtime periods, it looked as if the outcome might be decided in penalties.

But in the 98th minute, Neuqua got one final opportunity and made the most of it as Daniel Costea put in an attempt that turned out to be the lone goal in the 1-0 win.

“It was a great game,” Plainfield Central coach Kevin Fitzgerald said.

“It was well-played, hard-fought and

passionate. There was energy and it was back-and-forth for the full 100 minutes. We might have been the only ones who expected it to be that good of a game. I’m just proud of our guys. I think what we saw in this last week or two was what us realizing our potential looked like.

More surprises coming in playoffs Regardless of what transpires among area qualifiers during the high school football playoffs, 2016 will go into the books as an unusual season.

Who would have thought there would be a year when all of Joliet Catholic Academy, Bolingbrook and Providence missed the postseason?

The Hilltoppers, who continue to lead everyone with 13 state championships, had been in the playoffs 18 consecutive seasons before finishing 1-8 this fall. They last missed out in 1997, and before that, they had qualified 16 straight years. So that meant 34 times in the postseason in 35 seasons, with nine of their state titles plus four runner-up finishes during that span.

Before this season, Bolingbrook last failed to qualify in 1991, so when the Raiders (4-5) fell to Homewood-Flossmoor, 28-10, in Week 9, that halted their streak of 24 straight appearances, in-

Providence (4-5) also missed out last year, ending a four-year qualifying run during which the Celtics won their ninth state title in 2014. When they did not qualify in 2010, that ended a 19-year playoff presence during which they claimed seven of their nine championships.

Before that, from 1983 through 1989, Providence was in for seven straight years, winning its first title in 1987. So last season curtailed an era of 30 visits to the playoffs in 32 years.

While this was Providence’s second straight year failing to qualify, the Celt-

ics did finish on a high note, as they beat Mount Carmel, 17-6, in Week 9, ending the Caravan’s 30-year playoff run that included 11 of their 12 state titles, not to mention five second places.

So for kicks, toss Mount Carmel into our original question. Did you ever imagine in this era of 256 playoff qualifiers we would see a season where JCA, Providence, Bolingbrook and Mount Carmel all are left out?

This truly is an unusual occurrence.

It makes you believe something, or maybe a few somethings, will happen in the playoffs that are unexpected, to say the least. If the surprises are to happen and do involve our area schools, maybe that will be mean some of our qualifiers will go significantly further on the playoff trail than it appears on paper that they should.

1. Lemont (9-0): As the only large school in the area to finish the regular season unbeaten – in fact, the only one with fewer than two losses – the Indians claim the top spot in the final Herald-News rankings of the season.

2. Lincoln-Way East (7-2): The Griffins blanked Lockport, 28-0, in the regular-season finale and will be on a playoff path where they may be able to go a long way. The offensive line has been improving, and East has multiple weapons at the skill positions.

3. Plainfield North (7-2): The Tigers closed the regular season with a 47-7 thumping of Joliet West and are heading into the playoffs on a high note. They will host a playoff game for the first time Friday night and will have a shot at beating Highland Park and advancing to Round 2.

5. Lockport (6-3): The Porters finished the regular season without quarterback Ben Davis, who was out with mononucleosis. His status for the playoffs was uncertain as the Porters prepared to visit unbeaten St. Charles East, but sophomore Jacob Karli has come up to the varsity team and shown well.

6. Lincoln-Way Central (6-3): The Knights will attempt to rebound from a 42-21 loss to Metea Valley when they open the playoffs at Reavis.

Both teams have scored plenty of points during the season; this one could be a close, high-scoring battle.

Arrieta deals, Cubs awaken to even Series at 1

CLEVELAND – Jake Arrieta made a teasing try at history, Kyle Schwarber drove in two runs and the Cubs brushed off a shutout to even the World Series with their first Fall Classic win in 71 years, 5-1, over the Cleveland Indians in Game 2 on Wednesday night.

Arrieta carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, briefly invoking Don Larsen’s name, before the Indians touched him for two hits and a run.

However, the right-hander helped give the Cubs just what they needed – a split at Progressive Field – before the Cubs return to their Wrigley Field den for the next three games starting Friday night.

The Cubs hadn’t won in the Series since beating Detroit, 8-7, in 1945 to force Game 7.

The free-swinging Schwarber, who made it back for the Cubs long-awaited Series return after missing most of the season with an injured left knee, hit an RBI single in the third off Cleveland’s Trevor Bauer and had another in the Cubs’ three-run fifth – highlighted by Ben Zobrist’s run-scoring triple.

Even the presence of star LeBron James and the NBA champion Cavaliers, sporting their new rings, couldn’t stop the Indians from losing for the first time in six home games this postseason.

And Cleveland manager Terry Francona’s magical touch in October finally fizzled as he dropped to 9-1 in Series games.

With rain in the forecast, Major League Baseball moved the first pitch up an hour in hopes of avoiding delays or a postponement.

It turned out to be a good call as the game went on without a hitch and ended after more than four hours as light rain was beginning to fall.

Arrieta and the Cubs provided the only storm.

The bearded 30-year-old coasted through five innings without allowing a hit, the first pitcher to get that deep in a Series game with a no-hitter since David Cone of the New York Yankees in 1998.

For a brief period, Arrieta looked as if he might challenge Larsen’s gem – a perfect game – in 1956 before Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis, a die-hard Cubs fan as a kid, doubled

Before that, Cleveland hitters had a couple good swings, and drew three walks, but couldn’t mount a real threat. Arrieta has two career no-hitters, in fact, including the only one in the majors this year.

Cubs lefty Mike Montgomery replaced Arrieta and worked two scoreless innings before Aroldis Chapman came in and unleashed his 103 mph heat while getting the last four outs.

The teams will have an off day before the series resumes with Game 3 at Wrigley, which will host its first Series game since Oct. 6, 1945, when tavern owner Billy Sianis was asked to leave with his pet goat, Murphy, and a curse was born.

Josh Tomlin will start for the Indians, who will lose the designated hitter in the NL ballpark, against Kyle Hendricks.

Schwarber also might wind up on the bench after two days as the DH. With a gametime temperature of 43, the weather was more fitting for

the Browns and Bears to bang heads than the boys of summer.

The Cubs were the ones who came up thumping after being blanked, 6-0, in Game 1 by Corey Kluber and Cleveland’s shutdown bullpen.

Zobrist’s one-out triple triggered the fifth as the Cubs opened a 5-0 lead, not that Arrieta needed it.

After Anthony Rizzo walked following a 10-pitch at-bat, Zobrist laced a ball off Zach McAllister that was going to be a double until right fielder Lonnie Chisenhall slipped and fell.

Rizzo was waved around and Zobrist hustled into third.

Schwarber followed with his second RBI and reliever Bryan Shaw later walked No. 9 hitter Addison Russell with the bases loaded.

Unlike his start in Toronto on Oct. 17, when his stitched cut opened up and Bauer was forced to make a bloody departure in the first inning, his finger held up fine.

The Cubs, though, put a few nicks in him in 32/3 innings.

The drone accident has brought attention to the quirky Bauer, and one Cubs fan tried to rattle the righthander by sending a smaller version of the remote-controlled, flying object that cut him.

Bauer posted a photo of it on Twitter, saying “I see the @Cubs fans love me! How nice of them to send me a gift!”

The Cubs, who were off balance from the start against Kluber, scored their first run in a Series game since ’45 in the first on Rizzo’s RBI double.

Bauer needed 51 pitches to get through two innings, and he was one strike from getting out of the third unscathed when the Cubs turned a walk and to singles into a 2-0 lead.

Both squads had chances in the overtimes before the winning score. Central (1110-1) got a header from Ish Contreras that was hauled in the 84th minute, while Neuqua (13-5-4) countered with a corner kick from Edon Kosova that keeper Shane Badertscher dove for and deflected in the 93rd minute.

In the second half, Neuqua received good chances from Calum Nettleton, David Kuhn, Joshua Kolzow and Daniel Laverde while Central answered with threatening efforts from Badertscher, Joel Sanchez, Zach Bargas and Contreras.

There were fewer decent scoring possibilities in the opening half, and most of those belonged to Neuqua.

Continued from page 22 It may be crazy to suggest, but what if Lincoln-Way West (5-4) journeys to East St. Louis for Saturday’s 2 p.m. game in Class 7A and grounds the Flyers (9-0)?

What if Joliet West (6-3) heads to Oswego on Friday night and hands the Panthers (9-0) their first loss? What if Lockport (6-3) steals one from St. Charles East (9-0) on Friday night? And what if Coal City (5-4) pulls off an upset Friday night at Genoa-Kingston (9-0)?

If all of those results happen, our area could have a 10-0 first weekend, because our other half-dozen qualifiers, from this vantage point, have drawn opponents they could or should beat.

Of course, you know all four of those pleasant surprises will not happen, just as we all knew there never would be a season where JCA, Providence, Bolingbrook and even Mount Carmel missed the playoffs. No way that ever could happen, yet it did.

The thing about all our teams in the

playoffs is when they have played well; they have been legitimately good. The issue for many of them has been inconsistency.

This is the last of this season’s weekly football pages that have been published every Thursday and contain standings, statistics and rankings. We will continue to follow our teams as they advance through the playoffs, but the conference standings are complete, and rankings no longer have much value. You either win in the playoffs or you turn in the equipment.

Of course, ranking teams, especially large schools in the area this season, has been a chore from the beginning.

Attempting to determine who belonged where on the list week to week was as mind-boggling as I can remember it ever being.

That leads to the thought this may not be our year to shine in the playoffs.

Here’s hoping that in this weird season, such a thought proves completely off base.

1. Wilmington (9-0): The Wildcats, coming off a 34-14 win over rival Coal City, will face Chicago Corliss in the playoff opener. The path the Wildcats are on in Class 3A will be challenging.

2. Coal City (5-4): The Coalers challenged Wilmington for a while last week before the Wildcats pulled away for a 34-14 victory.

Coal City travels to unbeaten Genoa-Kingston for their playoff opener.

3. Peotone (4-5): There will be no playoffs for the Blue Devils as they fell to unbeaten Herscher, 55-14, in a Week 9 game they had to win to qualify.

Valentine should be ready to go with 2nd unit

jcowley@suntimes.com CHICAGO – Denzel Valentine definitely is pickup game ready.

The rookie showed that Wednesday, hitting two game-winners in a 4-on-4 pickup game late in practice, and oh yeah, hitting both over Jimmy Butler.

But is the first-round pick NBA-game ready Denzel when the Bulls tip off the Valentine season Thursday night against Boston at the United Center?

His coach is hoping so.

“He had a couple very good days,” Fred Hoiberg said of Valentine. “He had a really good practice [Tuesday] and followed that up without any soreness [Wednesday] morning. He got some good

work in after practice. Those guys down there played a little bit. We’ll monitor him and see how he’s doing [Thursday] morning.”

Valentine sprained his left ankle in the preseason opener, but was expected to be ready for the final two exhibition games.

The ankle had other ideas for the 14th overall pick, and he wasn’t able to participate in full practices until this week.

“It’s very difficult, and being in Chicago, we’ve played [most] of our preseason games here, so there wasn’t no traveling like midseason, so everybody is here pretty much every day practicing, and I’ve got to sit out at it,’’ Valentine said. “They kind of lose a little chemistry towards me, and the guys getting to play with me and me getting to know them on the court, so kind of lost a little bit of rhythm.

“But the good thing about me is I don’t need a whole lot of time with the team. I can kind of just sneak my way in and adapt.”

The plan was to get Valentine through the morning shootaround without a setback, suit him up and have him ready to get some playing time with the second unit.

As far as how many minutes, Hoiberg wasn’t going to jump in that pool just yet.

Newly acquired Michael Carter-Williams also is expected to get some minutes against Boston, despite having less than a week of practice after coming over in the Tony Snell trade with Milwaukee.

Mental game: Since naming Taj Gibson the starter at the four spot this week, Hoiberg said Nikola Mirotic has shown no signs of hanging his head or a lack of confidence after losing out in that com-

petition.

“Niko’s playing with some confidence now,” Hoiberg said. “Hopefully, he can continue that in the regular season. He’s going to be a big key to what we’re trying to do this year. If he can stay behind the line and space the floor the way we think he can, that will help everybody. He is playing with confidence. Now it’s about carrying it over to game-type action.”

High praise: Veteran Rajon Rondo played for the Celtics’ Brad Stevens before he started floating around the league, and he had some kind words for his former coach.

“Probably the most positive coach I’ve ever played for,” Rondo said. “Very inspiring, very encouraging. As a player, you want to play for a guy like Brad Stevens.

“He’s a good ATO (after the timeout) coach. Fred is, as well. He’s very poised.

Doc (Rivers) is too; so is Rick Carlisle.”

CHICAGO – Former Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau was famous for constantly reminding his players to “block out the noise” when it came to outside opinions.

And although Thibodeau is long gone, that noise still is persistent this preseason – loud and clear for those who choose to listen for it.

Nationally, most have the Bulls as an afterthought in the Eastern Conference playoff race. A team headed right back to a late lottery pick. Locally, there’s just as much pessimism. Can’t shoot from the outside, Dwyane Wade’s homecoming is five years too late, not enough bench.

Pick a criticism.

And then Jimmy Butler will tell you to quiet that noise.

“I think I know how it’s going to play out,” Butler said, as the Bulls are set to tip off their season against Boston on Thursday night at the United Center. “I think everybody overlooks us anyway.

All we can do is overachieve. I know the group of guys we got. I know how we’ve been working and preparing. So I know how I think it’s going to do.”

Details of that “do?”

Butler wasn’t offering that up. Let’s call it his little secret for now.

What the two-time All-Star was vocal about was the idea of prognosticators – in his opinion – underselling what this

Then again, it is a group that should be playing with very little pressure.

When the Bulls underachieved in the opinion of the front office two years ago, it was Thibodeau’s fault. They fired him and moved on. Last season, when they didn’t even make the playoffs, well, it was on the roster. Gone are Pau Gasol, Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, Mike Dunleavy, Aaron Brooks and now Tony Snell with the trade they made with Milwaukee last week in adding Michael Carter-Williams.

If the 2016-17 campaign ends poorly, it would seem that the finger pointing at the front office eventually is going to have to turn toward a mirror.

At least in most organizations it would.

So for Butler, Wade and Rajon Rondo, this year is about coming together as the projected three “Alpha Males” and playing free and easy. That should make life simpler for the likes of Robin Lopez, Taj Gibson, Doug McDermott and Nikola Mirotic.

At least that’s how Butler sees it.

“I don’t think it motivates us to do anything,” Butler added of the outside projections of his team. “They’re going to say and do whatever they want to do and say anyways, so motivation? Nah. Motivation is we get to go out and compete and put on for this organization every day.”

JCA grad Reardon earns MVC scholar-athlete award SUBMITTED REPORTS

CHICAGO – Loyola University women’s volleyball standout Morgan Reardon (Joliet Catholic Academy) has been named Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week.

This marks the second time in her career that Reardon, a marketing major, has won the award.

In three Missouri Valley Conference matches last week, Reardon averaged 4.91 kills and 3.18 digs per set as Loyola went 1-2. In a four-set victory over Bradley, the senior outside hitter pounded a season-high 23 kills, her most since going for a career-best 32 against Drake in 2014, and added 19 digs, also a season high, while hitting .429 (23-5-42).

She followed that up with 22 kills in a four-set setback to Indiana State, then just missed her ninth double-double of the season with nine kills and nine digs versus Illinois State.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY USF’s Knudsen cited: Leading his

team to the NAIA Seminole Valley Stampede title last Saturday, St. Francis junior Cam Knudsen (Minooka) has been named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week.

Knudsen, honored for the third time this season, placed fifth among 244 runners at the meet hosted by Mount Mercy. He covered the 8-kilometer course in an even 25 minutes to help the Saints top the field of 25 schools.

Ranked No. 2 in the most recent NAIA coaches’ poll, USF hosts the CCAC Championships on Nov. 5 at

2 arrested in theft of a Super Bowl ring from Broncos star The ASSOCIATED PRESS DENVER – Police said two men have been arrested on suspicion of breaking into the home of Denver Broncos linebacker DeMarcus Ware and stealing his Super Bowl 50 ring.

Denver police spokesman John White said Wednesday that Ware’s stolen property had been recovered.

White said the suspects, 40-year-old Billy McCaslin and 31-year-old Sergio Irreza, were identified through tips

from the public after police announced the break-in that occurred while Ware was at Monday night’s football game with the Houston Texans.

The two suspects have not yet been charged. Court records don’t list attorneys who could comment on their behalf.

Ware said on Twitter he was grateful for hidden cameras at his house, and White said the photos helped identify the suspects.

Police tweeted photos that were shared on social media by fans.

JGR’s strategy perfect for playoffs

TALLADEGA, Ala. – When Sweden beat the U.S. women’s soccer team during the Olympics by using a conservative strategy, goalie Hope Solo was lambasted for calling the winners “a bunch of cowards.”

NASCAR IN THE fans seemed to have adopted PITS Solo’s attitude Jenna in response to Fryer Joe Gibbs Racing’s strategy Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway.

The team has four drivers, and three were guaranteed a spot in the third round of the playoffs if they simply stayed out of trouble at Talladega.

So they lollygagged at the back of the pack.

All day.

Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards and Matt Kenseth raced with a purpose, but it wasn’t to win the race. Their goal was to finish the race and move on to see another day in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

A vocal faction of fans seems outraged at the JGR strategy, even though it worked to perfection. Not only did Busch, Edwards and Kenseth advance in the Chase, but so did Denny Hamlin, who was forced to race as a one-man team because of the organizational plan.

Hamlin just about needed a miracle to avoid elimination, and with his teammates offering no assistance in his bid to win the race, he had to find rival drivers to work with Sunday.

Hamlin wound up third, beating Kurt Busch for the position and the one point it was worth, by 0.006 seconds.

That result tied him in the standings with Austin Dillon, and Hamlin got the last berth in the playoffs on a tiebreaker.

There are eight cars left in the Chase field. Four of them come from JGR. For that, the team should be commended.

Instead, fans are griping that they prefer to see drivers race and not ride around the back of the pack.

To that, Kyle Busch had a simple answer Monday.

“Don’t hate the player... Hate the game,” Busch posted on Twitter.

Kenseth finished 28th on Sunday, Edwards was 29th and Busch was 30th. All were satisfied with the result, although they didn’t really love executing the plan. Busch found the strategy to be dull and not very motivating, but it accomplished what he needed.

Two years ago, Busch went to Talladega in decent shape to advance in the Chase. He was involved in a wreck and eliminated from the playoffs.

“There’s no reward to go race and

get wrecked,” Busch said. “You’ve got to try to survive and do what you can.”

Kenseth seemed to acknowledge the potential for disappointed fans, but rationalized it by pointing out what was at stake. Kenseth was eliminated from the Chase at Talladega last year.

“It goes against everything you ever want to do as a race car driver,” Kenseth said. “You can’t afford to go up there and get wrecked and not have a chance to race for a championship. I don’t think any of us had any fun and none of us enjoyed it, but it was just what we had to do.”

Those upset with the way JGR raced likely fall into two camps. There are the people who just don’t like the team, whether it’s because Gibbs uses Toyotas or because the organization has 11 wins this year. And there are the fans of the individual drivers who dawdled at the back of the pack at Talladega, and they wanted to see their favorites compete for the win.

The first group is common in sports. People don’t like the Yankees, or the Red Sox, or the Patriots, or the Cowboys. They’ll find fault in anything those teams do. In the case of Gibbs, the domination over the past two years has rubbed people wrong, and there are some who just don’t like that they drive for a Japanese automaker.

But you can’t fault the team for figuring out how to work as, ahem, a team, and accomplish big-picture tasks. Remember, JGR worked flawlessly together along with Martin Truex Jr. at the Daytona 500, where Hamlin won and Toyota drivers took four of the top five spots.

Some have argued that JGR at Talladega violated the NASCAR rule that all drivers give 100 percent during a race. False. JGR gave 100 percent in determination, patience and strategy in racing for the bigger picture.

That’s why fans of the individual drivers also should take a step back and appreciate what the organization accomplished. Sure, it wanted to see its drivers mixing it up at the front and trying to win the race. But with that came a risk of accident, or overheated engine (see: Truex or Brad Keselowski), and that would have ruined the rest of the season.

JGR was brilliant at Talladega, where they took the system at its face, worked within the rules and claimed 50 percent of the playoff positions.

That’s a good day.

Following both passions

The Rev. Burke Masters cares for the spiritual needs of the Cubs

CREST HILL – Jesus Christ and baseball.

Those are his biggest passions, said the Rev. Burke Masters, director of vocations for the Diocese of Joliet in Crest Hill.

So when Catholic Athletes for Christ contacted Masters five years ago and asked if he’d be interested in serving as one of the chaplains for the Chicago Cubs, Masters was in.

“I always wanted to be a major league baseball player. But that didn’t materialize,” Masters said. “When I became a priest, I thought I was giving up baseball forever. But God’s plans are always greater than ours. It’s almost as if God said, ‘You can be a priest and be in the major leagues, too.’ ” This is Masters’ fourth year with the Cubs. Masters said he often retells this story when he speaks to young people about the priesthood.

“God doesn’t take away our passions. God doesn’t take away the things we’re good at,” Masters said. “Instead, he brings out the best possible use of our gifts and talents. In my wildest dreams I never imagined it, but in God’s plan, I think he planned this all along.”

Becoming Catholic

Masters said he was raised in a non-practicing Christian family. His two older brothers had attended the former Joliet East High School, but Masters’ parents, Tod Masters and the late Janet Masters, weren’t happy with the school by the time Masters entered high school, Masters said.

Masters said his parents gave him two options: the former Catholic High School in Joliet and Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox. Masters said both had good baseball programs, but some of his friends were attending Providence, so that decided it.

“Little did I know it would change the course of my life,” Masters said.

The principal at the time was the late Rev. Roger Kaffer, who would later become the auxiliary bishop for the Diocese of Joliet. Kaffer’s energy and joy, inspired Masters, and he recalled both years later when Masters was considering the priesthood.

“He [Kaffer] always said the priesthood was a great adventure,” Masters said.

Then one day, Masters received communion by accident at a retreat during his junior year, when the students were gathered around the altar, and Masters “felt the power of Christ like never before.”

“He [the priest] stood before me and said, ‘The body of Christ,’ ” Masters said. “As I opened my mouth to say, ‘I’m not Catholic,’ ” in went my first communion.”

Masters spent a year studying the faith and was baptized on May 26, 1985, in a private ceremony in Providence’s chapel, one week before his high school graduation, he said. That fall, Masters attended Mississippi State University.

Questions from other students about his Catholic faith spurred Masters to study it more deeply.

During his college years, Masters occasionally attended services at other Christian churches. Despite “music that was beautiful” and “preaching that was very powerful,” none offered what Masters said he most needed; The Eucharist.

“The presence I felt when I received communion was so peaceful,” Masters said. “That’s the best way to describe it.”

But Masters still wasn’t thinking about the priesthood, he said. He was thinking about baseball.

Master said after college be briefly played in the White Sox minor league.

He then worked as an actuary for a Long Grove insurance agency. Masters said he made a lot of money – and missed baseball.

He set a goal becoming a general manager of a major league baseball team. So Masters went to work in the ticket office for the Kane County Cougars.

The real home base

Then a woman Masters was dating at the time introduced him to Eucharistic adoration. Silent prayer accompanies Eucharistic adoration and Masters said he was afraid of silence.

“It’s when we encounter God and ourselves,” Masters said.

During those times, the call to the priesthood became very strong, he said.

Masters discussed it with his girlfriend, who encouraged him to follow the call, he said. So, in the fall of 1997, Masters, at 30, entered Mundelein Seminary. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 1, 2002.

For four years, Masters served at

St. Mary Catholic Church in West Chicago, a bilingual parish where Master quickly learned Spanish, making him now fully bilingual. In 2006, the late Joseph Imesch, former Bishop for the Diocese of Joliet, appointed Masters as director of vocations for the diocese.

As the Catholic chaplain for the Cubs, Masters goes to Wrigley Field on Sundays during the Cubs’ home games.

He makes himself generally available to the players “Many of them have my cell phone in case they need to talk,” Master said – and celebrates Mass in the stadium for any members of the Cubs, visiting team and stadium personnel that wish to attend.

About 40 people generally attend, Masters said. When he began the program four years ago, just one player showed up. Masters said the day after Miguel Montero hit a grand slam, Montero attend Mass.

“That’s what striking about these Masses,” Masters said. “There’s a multimillionaire baseball player sitting next to an usher or a beer salesman at the ballpark. In that moment, I realize that, in God’s eyes, we’re not different. God doesn’t care about how much money they make. God doesn’t care about job titles. He cares about how much we love.”

‘Like sitting down and talking to your father’ ‘Catholics Returning Home’ welcomes non practicing Catholics

If you go “Catholics Returning Home” will run from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Mondays beginning Nov. 7 and ending Dec. 19. Each night features a topic and an opportunity to pray and ask questions.

PLAINFIELD – Kathy Marcucci of Plainfield calls herself a “cradle Catholic.”

“I was born to Catholic parents, was baptized, did the sacraments and that was it,” Marcucci said. “I only went to church for weddings and funerals.

But I always prayed. I just didn’t go to church to pray.”

Five years ago, Marcucci learned of the “Catholics Returning Home” program from a friend who was attending it. This is a free six-week program St. Mary Immaculate Parish in Plainfield offers three times a year – before Christmas and Easter, and during the summer. The next series begins Nov. 7.

The friend’s newfound job in her faith impressed Marcucci. She wanted that same joy, too.

So Marcucci enrolled in the program – and literally felt as if she’d come home. Marcucci credits the program’s leader, Deacon Tom O’Connell, for his safe, supportive, nonjudgmental compassion.

“It was like sitting down and talking to your father about anything,” Marcucci said. “I left the cradle part of Catholic at the door that night and have been a practicing Catholic ever since.”

Since then, Marcucci’s husband, Robert Marcucci, also has attended Mass at St. Mary Immaculate Parish in Plainfield. Marcucci encourages any fallen away Catholic to check out this program.

“Even though it took me until I was in my 50s to understand the faith I was born into,” Marcucci said, “there was no condemnation, nothing except, ‘Welcome, welcome home.’ ”

A program is born

O’Connell, 83, of Crest Hill, noticed the large number of Catholics not practicing their faith shortly after he was ordained a deacon in 1978.

While serving at St. Walter Parish in Chicago and facilitating a program for Catholic converts, O’Connell read a statement in a book that struck him.

“It said the largest denomination in America was Catholic and the second largest was former Catholics who no longer practice,” O’Connell said.

“It hit me that we weren’t doing anything to bring these people back to the church.”

About 10 years ago, O’Connell, now serving at St. Mary Immaculate Parish in Plainfield, suggested starting a “Catholics Returning Home” program at St. Mary’s to its pastor, the Rev. David Medow.

“He gave me permission right

away,” O’Connell said.

The reasons people stop practicing their Catholic faith are varied, O’Connell said. Reasons include mixed marriages (Catholics marrying non-Catholics), previous abortions and substance abuse, as well as divorce and remarriage without having the first marriage annulled by the Catholic church.

The first night is a “getting to know you” meeting. At the second meeting, O’Connell distributes an anonymous questionnaire.

“It helps me make sure we address

their individual needs and concerns,” O’Connell said.

Over the next few weeks, O’Connell educates participants on changes in the Catholic church since Vatican II, the various components of the Mass along with their meanings and the basic beliefs of the Catholic faith.

O’Connell especially focuses on the sacrament of reconciliation – also known as the sacrament of confession – where the person confesses his or her sins to God in the presence of a priest, who gives absolution.

Many nonpracticing Catholics have not experienced the sacrament of reconciliation in years, O’Connell said, which can play a significant role in their feeling a sense of having come home.

That can easily be reversed by calling the church and making an appointment.

“Each of our priests make that offer of being available,” O’Connell said.

On the last night, O’Connell distributes a booklet that sums up Catholic beliefs and practices.

“I do a quick review of the book so that they become familiar with how to find the information they’re looking for,” O’Connell said. “And that’s it.”

The number of participants in any given series fluctuates, O’Connell said. He’s seen as few as one and as many as 10. Participants in “Catholics Returning Home” can come from any Catholic church, O’Connell said.

There is no obligation to join St. Mary Immaculate Parish in Plainfield, even after completing the program.

“They can go to their own parish, register and become active,” O’Connell said.

36 Add whole grains for a healthier diet Dear Dr. K: I know I should be eating more whole grains, but for years I’ve been eating white bread, white rice and white pasta. I don’t know where to begin the switch to whole grains. Can you help?

Dear Reader: Like you, many of my patients and I are making the switch to whole grains. Why? Diets rich in whole grains are linked with a reduced risk of many medical conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, obesity and certain cancers.

Whole-grain kernels are essentially plant seeds that have been removed from their inedible husks. All the grains we eat now started as whole grains, but we’ve stripped them down and lost some of the nutrition. Whole grains include unrefined versions of familiar foods such as wheat, corn, rice, oats, barley and rye.

Whole grains may take a little getting used to, especially if you’re accustomed to fluffy white rice and instant oatmeal. But they can reward you with more complex flavor and a more interesting plate. For example, I haven’t had white rice in an Asian restaurant in a long time – the nutty flavor of brown rice is so much tastier. The following tips might help you get started: • Start with the familiar. Switch to a whole-grain version of something you already eat. For example, try brown or wild rice instead of white rice. Or try whole-grain pasta instead of white pasta.

There now are several brands of wholegrain pasta in supermarkets that taste at least as good to me as white pasta. And my morning toast is always whole grain: It just tastes better than store-bought white bread.

• Go gradually. Add whole grains a little at a time. For example, try mixing some brown rice into your white rice or replacing half your white pasta with whole-grain

• Take shortcuts. Whole grains take longer to cook. Speed the process by soaking them first. (Don’t try this with pasta, though.)

• Rethink snacks. Popcorn is a whole grain, too. It’s a great substitute for chips and pretzels. I have mid-evening popcorn once or twice a week. If I pour some olive oil over the kernels before popping them, I don’t need to add butter after they’re popped. (You do need to add some salt, though.)

• Be adventurous. Quinoa, in three colors, now is easy to find. And the so-called “ancient grains” – including amaranth, bulgur, farro, Kamut, millet, spelt, sorghum and teff – also are becoming familiar on grocery shelves and in restaurants.

• Don’t be fooled. When you’re buying packaged baked goods or cereals, look for “whole grain” on the label. “Multigrain” means only that the product is made from more than one grain, not that those grains are whole.

Finally, be assured cooking whole grains does not involve long and complicated instructions. Combine the dry grain with water or broth in a pot, bring it to a boil, then simmer until the liquid is absorbed. It’s easy to eat healthy – and it tastes delicious.

If he had continued with a high club, South would have ruffed high (West would have thrown a spade), drawn two rounds of trumps, and played three rounds of spades, discarding a diamond, to get home.

Instead, East accurately cashed his diamond king and diamond queen before leading the third club, which promoted a trump trick for West.
