JJC student enrollment increases

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet Junior College official reported at Tuesday’s board workshop meeting a high headcount for student enrollment and a slight decrease for full-time equivalent numbers.

For the fall 2016 semester, JJC ranks second among Illinois community colleges in unduplicated headcount at 15,383 students and ranks third in full-time equivalent enrollment with 8,662 students.

Full-time equivalent numbers reflect the total number of credit hours being taken by students divided by 15, which is the number of semester hours traditionally considered a full-time class load, according to the Illinois Community College Board.

“We have a lot to celebrate,” said Jo-

Offermann said the student retention rate is up by 1.3 percentage points, new JJC students increased by 7.8 percent in headcount and 8.1 percent in full-time equivalent.

He also noted the college’s Hispanic/ Latino population now represents 26.2 percent in headcount enrollment.

College officials have been focused on increasing student enrollment, retention, degree and certificate earners through the strategic enrollment management plan.

Board Vice Chairman Andrew Mihelich asked Offermann whether JJC is the No. 1 choice for high school seniors.

“If we’re not, we’re getting there,” Offermann said.

Offermann said last year that JJC has come off high enrollment peaks between 2009 and 2013.

Mokena approves sales tax sharing deal with Point Blank gun range

mmallory@shawmedia.com MOKENA – The Mokena Village Board on Monday unanimously approved a sales tax incentive assignment for a new gun range.

The assignment is part of an economic incentive agreement the village approved in 2006 with the developer of a business park in the area of 88th Avenue and Springlake Drive. In it, the village agreed to share sales tax revenue with sales tax-generating occupants of industrial-zoned lots within the park.

For each new occupant, the village must approve a request to benefit from the economic incentive agreement.

economic incentive the village created several years ago for a portion of the business park. In January, the village granted a special use permit to the company.

On Monday, Point Blank opened the 16,000-square-foot building, which has space for 22 pistol-shooting ranges; a retail area for firearms, ammunition and related supplies; two classrooms for training on basic handguns and concealed carry, and private lessons; and the potential for future expansion to add a 100-yard rifle range.

The gun range is state-of-the-art in terms of ventilation and lead collection, Mokena Director of Economic and Community Development Alan Zordan said in a video of the Village Board meeting posted to the village’s website.

Offermann gave a presentation to the board on the latest enrollment figures, showing JJC was one of nine community colleges to show an increase in its headcount this fall.

Many of JJC’s peer colleges showed enrollment decreases. Headcount enrollment for the College of DuPage – the largest Illinois community college – decreased from 28,678 in fall 2015 to 26,901 this fall.

Statewide, headcount and full-time equivalent enrollment have continued to decrease, according to ICCB. Headcount has dropped from 358,562 students in 2012 to 303,896 this fall. For fulltime equivalent in the fall, enrollment went from 208,508 students in 2012 to 176,374 this year.

get yearly $15,000 for road maintenance.

Another $15,000 will also go to the village and $15,000 will go back to Point Blank.

It’s estimated Point Blank should generate about $180,000 for the village over the remaining seven years of the incentive agreement.

Point Blank intends to hire about 50 full-time and part-time employees total.

“This will benefit the village in more than just financial ways,” Zordan said.

It’s also assumed Point Blank will generate $45,000 annually in amusement tax revenue for the village from shooting range rentals.

“We’re striving to make Mokena a destination and that facility does make it a destination,” Mayor Frank Fleischer said in the meeting. “People will come from all over the place to shoot at that range and come into our town.”

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The work crew arrived early for Joliet’s first TV recycling event, and it was a good thing because so did the public.

More than 20 people dropped off TVs, computers and other electronics before the official opening time of 5 p.m., and it was a steady stream of cars after that.

“I’ve been waiting for this for a long time so I don’t have to drive so far,” said Connie Dillon, who was happy to find a place close to home to get rid of two pieces of computer equipment.

“I love it,” Darlene Young said, “because we’ve been having our computers and TVs just sitting there, and we didn’t know what to do with them.”

Getting rid of old TVs and computers became a problem in 2012 when they were banned from landfills. The recycling option became more difficult as sites shut down early this year amid funding problems that drove some recyclers out of the business and drove others to start charging high

“I follow the recycling news,” Rozman said. “We were watching articles about recycling, and we were glad this opened today.”

The Joliet site across Ottawa Street from the Will County Jail is the fifth recycling site opened by Will County after having to shut down 13 sites earlier this year when a vendor exited the business.

Others are in Lockport, New Lenox Township, Romeoville and Peotone.

New Lenox board acts on rebate, branding

Shaw Media correspondent NEW LENOX – New Lenox residents can apply for a 75 percent rebate this year on property taxes paid to the village.

For the seventh straight year, the Village Board on Monday adopted a resolution determining the amount the village would refund to residents from the village’s portion of their 2015 property tax bill.

In order to qualify for the refund, residents must submit an application

by Dec. 15. Yellow forms with yellow envelopes will be mailed to residents Wednesday, Finance Director Kim Auchstetter said.

According to the resolution, the refund will apply to residential properties where the owner has resided for the entire 2015 calendar year.

Refunds are usually mailed out in March.

The village has voted to refund a portion of resident property taxes since 2009 after a referendum to make the village home rule was ap-

proved in 2008. In the first year, residents received back 40 percent of their village property taxes and since then that amount has steadily risen.

The village refunded 65 percent in 2014 and 70 percent in 2015.

More than $1 million was paid back to residents by the village earlier this year, Mayor Tim Baldermann said. He urged that all residents eligible for the rebate return the application on time.

“This is a lot of money and also something you don’t see in local communities,” he said.

However, as it did last year, the village has included a provision in the resolution and on the forms to be mailed to residents that the refund

amount may be reduced if the state follows through on Gov. Bruce Rauner’s proposal in early 2015 to reduce local municipalities’ state funding by half.

Auchstetter, however, does not see that happening, as the village was able to refund the full amount of last year’s rebate.

A makeover for New Lenox?

Village trustees on Monday also approved a contract not to exceed $39,650 with a5, a branding and digital firm, to come up with a branding and marketing plan that will tell the story of New Lenox to prospective developers and residents.

The firm will conduct interviews with village officials and possibly survey residents to get opinions for a modernized image of New Lenox, which would be translated into a redesigned logo for the village.

The new logo could be used on new village entry signs as well its water tower and municipal vehicles.

“We want something that will be very identifiable with our town,” Bal-

dermann said after the meeting.

The firm will also develop a media marketing plan for the village.

Baldermann: Amended marijuana ordinance will stay

Baldermann said after the meeting Monday that the village will not change an amended ordinance passed earlier this month decriminalizing possession of up to 30 grams of marijuana, which superseded the maximum 10 gram amount allowed by the state to be considered a civil and not criminal offense.

Although the village may have inadvertently passed an ordinance that did not exactly mirror the state law as was intended by Deputy Police Chief Bob Pawlisz, who drafted the ordinance, Baldermann said the village is “well within [its] parameters” as a home-rule community to keep the change intact.

The amended New Lenox ordinance reduces possession of up to 30 grams of marijuana from a criminal misdemeanor charge to a citation with fines ranging from $100 to $200.

District 17 pleased with test scores, academic progress

Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – Principals of the four schools in Channahon School District 17 presented Measures of Academic Progress standardized exam data and school improvement plans Monday to the school board, with good news.

The district’s scores on the exam, which measures student progress in English language arts and mathematics, are very good.

“We were very happy with our results,” Channahon Junior High School Principal Chad Uphoff said.

“Our math numbers were really outstanding this year.”

The three other district principals echoed Uphoff’s statement about how well their students performed on the test, which was administered last spring, and showed board members tables comparing their students’ increases in growth over the past year, both within the schools’ grade levels and compared with national results.

Uphoff said he was particularly impressed with the junior high’s ge-

ometry and statistics progress in seventh grade.

Teachers adjust their strategies based on standardized test results, he said, and action plans for his teachers this year include piloting standards-based grading, adding more English language content in vocabulary quizzes, maximizing opportunities for group math work, and doing targeted reteaching for students with deficiencies.

Three Rivers School Principal Susan Kavich said that, based on the MAP results, her teachers’ action plans for the school year included implementing Common Core-aligned curricula and setting individual goals according to students’ deficit areas.

Measuring growth, she also said, can be misleading when students are already performing at the highest level.

Laura DuBois, principal of Pioneer Path School, which educates third- and fourth-graders, told the board that her students are making the most growth in operations and algebraic thinking in the math section and grammar and language use in the

Teachers this year will use timed practice and tests for fact fluency, identify students who could benefit from Homework Club, and use technology to differentiate lessons and assessments, among other action plans.

Principal Mary Kelly’s kindergarten and first- and second-graders at N.B. Galloway School also scored very well on the MAP test, and her teachers will undergo more professional development on new assessments and incorporate more digital reading in daily lessons and independently.

“We, of course, are proud of our scores and continue to move forward,” Superintendent Nick Henkle said after the meeting, “but with the understanding that it’s just one piece of the equation. ... This is one snapshot.”

Henkle said other standardized test results, such as those from the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers exam, which will be discussed next month, are added to character education and other aspects of student development to determine the full picture of the district’s academic growth.

The school board Monday also: • Heard a request, which will be considered further, from Crase Auto that the car dealership be allowed to use some District 17 parking spaces adjacent to the dealership.

• Decided to retire three older school buses and allow Chief School Business Official Mike Schroeder to prepare to seek bids for two new buses.

• Approved hiring Cassie Triche as a technology support specialist at a wage of $15 an hour.

Joliet development director gained lifelong love of cities in Kalamazoo

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Kendall Jackson has a love for cities and is in a position to pursue his passion.

Jackson took over in late September as Joliet’s director of community development, overseeing the city’s planning, inspections and neighborhood services.

He is a familiar figure in Joliet, having arrived in 1993 as a planner and serving the last eight years as the city’s planning director.

Not a native, Jackson grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where he developed his interest in urban planning.

“I liked architecture, and I love cities,” Jackson said.

“As a form,” he said, discussing his passion for cities, “the buildings and the different neighborhoods, and how they work together and how they don’t work together.”

Joliet offers ample opportunities to make a city work and solve problems.

Jackson has been working on one of them for several years as the city has gone through starts and stops building

a new transportation center downtown.

Construction of a new train station has just started. But Jackson said the downtown rail system already has been improved by a realignment of freight tracks.

“I think it’s already making a difference in how freight travels through.

That rail intersection was kind of a bottleneck,” he said.

The new train station is necessary for the city’s vitality, he said.

“Joliet always was a regional hub for transportation,” Jackson said.

“People come here to get a Metra train or an Amtrak train. Our facility, as wonderful as Union Station is, no longer functioned as a modern train station.”

Jackson has a master’s degree in urban planning and policy from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

His résumé includes work as a researcher for Compass Lexecon, an economic consultant for private business. At the Chicago Urban League, he helped minority-owned businesses learn the ins and outs of government contracting. He was the lone planner at the city of Harvey before coming to

Joliet.

He is the only African-American department head at the city of Joliet, although not the first.

Jackson said he was inspired to go into urban planning in part by an African-American city manager in Kalamazoo, who promoted development projects in a downtown area where Jackson already was taking note of the buildings as he contemplated a career in architecture.

His late father, Donald Jackson, a coach at Kalamazoo Central High School, is in the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan Hall of Fame.

As director of community development, Jackson’s role is a bit different from that of his predecessor, James Haller, who held the title of director of community and economic development. The city this year made Steve Jones director of economic development, which Jackson said streamlines operations.

“We try not to be an impediment to development, but use our regulatory process to be an aid to development when it’s helpful to the city,” he said.

“We try to be business friendly.”

Trustees suggested better or more signage to direct people to lots that are underused at peak times, such as a public lot near the Plainfield Public Library District on Illinois Street that some may think is only for the library.

Trustee Margie Bonuchi suggested working with property owners, such as a bank, to see whether those spots can be used after businesses close.

Trustees were not in favor of building a parking garage structure that would cost a few million dollars. Haussman said there are definitely better low-cost options to explore.

The village may also look into adding 30 to 50 parking spaces at Electric Park. It will have to consider flood risks, however.

Mayor Mike Collins said the village could try to increase the spaces in the Des Plaines Street lot it owns. Trustee Bill Lamb said the public seems to like that lot more than the library lot.

Village Administrator Brian Murphy said the feedback will be helpful to village staff when planning for the next year.

PLAINFIELD – The village of Plainfield received the results of a downtown parking study aimed at finding solutions for its sometimes-congested Lockport Street area.

Village trustees approved a contract Aug. 1 with Baxter & Woodman Engineering at a cost not to exceed $55,300 for the contractor to complete a comprehensive study of downtown parking space use and develop ideas for future parking improvements.

Lou Haussman, of Baxter & Woodman, presented the village Monday evening with the study results during a Committee of the Whole workshop meeting. Trustees Jim Racich and Garrett Peck were absent. The village posted video of the meeting to YouTube.

The firm compiled parking use rates at different times throughout a oneweek period and results showed that there was always enough parking.

“At all times of our study, the village had available parking,” Haussman said in the video. “However, there are some very concentrated areas of parking utilization near Lockport and Des Plaines streets.”

Friday at 8 p.m. was the time of highest general parking use. Overall, parking in the downtown area was 54 percent used at this time, but the area of Lockport Street, Des Plaines Street and Illinois Street was close to 100 percent. Saturday night was similar with slightly less use.

“I don’t know ... I did hate you,” Gustafson, who Gomez tried to have killed before his first trial by a Will County jail inmate he’d hired, answered after a long pause.

Gustafson went to bed earlier than usual May 9, and Gomez, with whom she was living, said he was going to visit neighbors. He returned hours later with blood all over his clothes, she said.

“He said that he killed ... Joe,” she testified. “He told me he’d told Joe to get on the ground and if he complies no one will get hurt, but he said Joe had a shotgun next to him and when he pulled it out, [Gomez] stabbed him.”

Police said Salamie was not armed.

“He was chasing him around the house ... said it was like 200 times [he stabbed him] because he wouldn’t die.

He wasn’t using a big knife, something like a box cutter and he wouldn’t die so he ripped his throat out,” Gustafson

said.

Gomez put his bloody clothing in a bag that he tossed into a river in Momence the next day and used “bloody money” to pay a bill and buy shoes and a poster at the mall and marijuana from one of Gustafson’s co-workers, she said.

Gustafson said she’d wanted to believe her boyfriend’s claims of self-defense, but started noticing information he gave her didn’t match what was being reported in the news. She decided to give investigators the full story shortly after her daughter was born.

“It’s something that I had to do. I was dating a guy who knew him. He made me realize if [Gomez] does get out, he’s going to come after everyone,” Gustafson said.

The trial will continue later this week.

Gustafson initially provided an alibi for Gomez’s whereabouts on May 10, 2007, when Joseph N. Salamie was found slain on his 10-acre farm in Peotone Township, but she later told Will County Sheriff’s Office police that Gomez admitted to her that he’d robbed and killed his former landlord.

Gomez, who’d once lived in a trailer on the farm, stabbed Salamie more than 100 times, slit his throat and stole $1,200, Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Steve Platek told the jury of eight women and four men.

No jail time for driver in fatal Homer Township DUI crash

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Romeoville man will not serve any jail time for a 2015 crash that killed a 75-year-old Lockport woman.

Prosecutors last week dropped a misdemeanor driving under the influence of drugs charge against Jerry Moretti, 52. Moretti pleaded guilty to disregarding a stop sign and failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash and was fined $1,000 and given 12 months of court supervision.

Defense attorney Steven Haney called the matter “a tragic case.”

“Someone is dead and you’re going to have to live with that,” Judge Daniel Rippy told Moretti. “I will say if I was able to give you jail time, I would.”

About 5:15 p.m. Aug. 2, 2015, Moretti’s 2011 Nissan entered the intersection at Smith Road and 135th Street in Homer Township, where it struck a 2002 Mazda driven by Joan D. Kaczmarek.

Since June, driving under the influence charges require proof of more than 5 nanograms of THC in a person’s blood.

“This is a tragic case,” Pelkie agreed.

“If all goes well, we’d like to not only keep these in the program but expand it next year,” Keane said.

But electronics recycling is a tough business.

Some counties charge a fee of $25 a TV for the service. In Will County, there is no charge.

Electronics recycling is funded partially by manufacturers required to contribute based on a complicated formula. When the formula doesn’t generate enough money, government either comes up with more money or starts charging for the service. But the higher the charges, the less people recycle.

How much the county can do next year is a budget issue to be worked out in the coming weeks, Keane said.

OBITUARIES IRENE DOROTHY FOSTER Born: January 2, 1926 Died: October 20, 2016

Irene Dorothy Foster (nee Smith) was born on January 2, 1926 in Kentucky and was one of fifteen children born to Oscar and Luvenia Smith.

Irene was raised by her parents in Joliet, Illinois and attended the Joliet Public School System.

Irene married Freely Foster on March 13, 1942 in St. Louis, Missouri. Four children were born to this union; Glory, Dorene, Freely and Kim. Irene was very active in the Los Amigos Social Club. She was a chartered member of the Assembly Social Klub.

Irene worked as an educator for the Ludeman Center. She retired in 2001 after 40 successful years of dedicated service.

Irene was very fashion conscious; she was always very well dressed, presenting herself in a proud and sophisticated manner. Ms. Irene was always “very well put together.”

As in life, Irene gracefully departed this life on Thursday, October 20, 2016.

She was preceded in death by her husband; Freely Foster Sr.; parents, Oscar and Luvenia Smith; four children, Dorene, Cleotha, Kim and Freely Jr.; eight brothers, Oscar, James, Ronald, Demetrius, Lynell, Maymon, August and Jerry Smith; three sisters, Mosella Smith, Maydella Robinson and Sandra Smith; and a great grandson, Jerie McClellan.

Irene leaves to cherish her memories; one daughter, Glory (Eugene) Barber; one son, Eugene Foster; two brothers, Laverne (Grace) and John Smith; one sister, Laura Burford; nine grandchildren, Sonya (Rodney) Marion, Rhea (Warren) Martin, Karla Blankenship, Wilbert McClellan, Jr., Kolanda Thompson, Duane Austin, Markisha (James) Woodson and Shamyra Foster; special cousin, Ida Mae Saunders; special niece, Mercedes “Gigi” Herring and a special best friend, Bessie Harris. Also left to cherish her life are a host of great grandchildren, great great grandchildren and other family and friends.

MARILYN MILLER Marilyn Miller, beloved Sister, Aunt, Friend and Educator passed into Eternal Life on Sunday morning, October 9, 2016.

Born in Mattoon, Illinois, she loved spending time riding horses on the Miller family farm and churning butter for her grandmother. She obtained a Bachelor’s degree from Eastern Illinois University and moved to Paris, Illinois for her first teaching position. She later moved to Antioch,

Illinois where she discovered a love for Modern Dance instruction. She spent the remainder of her professional career as the Physical Education instructor at Lockport West, later known as Romeovillle High School, from 1970 to 1993.

Marilyn was known for her love of students and became the faculty sponsor of the Girls Athletic Association (GAA). Her students were her “kids” and she inspired many young adults like Terri Trachler (Birdsall) to stay in school through graduation. Terri states “she is one of those once-in-a-lifetime teachers that you have the fondest memories of laughing, crying, carrying on and having fun.” She arranged yearly adventures to the family home at Lake Mattoon which are remembered fondly by many students.

She also enjoyed being the school badminton coach for many years.

She is survived by one sister, Sandy Love (Paul), Nieces Shannon Bowles (Charles Robert “Bob”) and Paula Turner (Michael).

A private graveside service for immediate family members will be held in Windsor, Illinois.

Marilyn will be forever greatly missed by her lifelong friends, Joyce Lindstrom of Plainfield and Rita Siedler of Crest Hill, Illinois. Additionally, she leaves behind her beloved animals - Dogs: Doti and Scruffy and Cats: Unique, Abby, Hollister, Rascal, Gypsy and Little Bits.

JOSEPH RIVERA SR. Born: October 6, 1947 Died: October 19, 2016

Joseph “Joe” Rivera Sr., went peacefully to be with our Lord with his family by his side.

He was a lifelong resident of Joliet. He retired from Printing Craftsman in 1997. He was a coach to local youth for Belmont LL for 27 years and a life member of both Belmont A.C. and Ingalls Park A.C. He was a Die Hard Chicago Cubs and Washington Redskins fan. He loved spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and his beloved dog Rocky.

He is preceded by his father, Arturo; and mother, Adela (Hernandez) Rivera; brother, Porfirio Rivera; his nephew, Adam Garcia; and his beloved granddaughter, Allison Rivera.

Joe is survived by his wife, Connie; his sons, Joe (Ruthie) Rivera, Michael (Wendy) Rivera, Anthony (Salena) Rivera; and one daughter, Rikki (Dave) Hernandez. MARTIN A. URBA Martin A. Urba, LCPC, CAADC, age 64, entered into eternal life on Saturday, October 22, 2016.

Martin is survived by one brother, Tom (Sharon) Urba; one sister, Dolores (the late Adolph) Barauskas; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Martin was a longtime resident of Crest Hill, IL. He worked as a counselor at a number of alternative schools and recently retired from Guardian Angel Home Dillard Harris School. He was a member of the JJC Chorale. Martin performed with the JJC Theatre Department in plays such as “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” as Big Daddy.

He graduated from Brother Rice High School in the Class of 1970 and University of Illinois Champaign where he earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees. Martin was a dedicated Chicago Bears and White Sox fan. He enjoyed the simple joys of life such as gardening, nature, friendships, and family.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – The number of registered active voters in Illinois ahead of next month’s election is at its highest since 1970, even edging past the number from 2008 when Barack Obama – then a U.S. senator from the state – ran for president, officials with the state Board of Elections said Tuesday.

The increased numbers come amid an unprecedented campaign season in which Democrat Hillary Clinton, the first female major-party candidate for president, has squared off against Republican billionaire Donald Trump.

There were nearly 7.99 million registered active voters and 758,000 inactive voters in Illinois as of Tuesday morning, state board of election spokesman Jim Tenuto said. That’s more than the 7.8 million who were registered before the 2008 presidential election, the previous high since 1970. Inactive voters are those who haven’t voted in the past two federal elections.

The number likely will tip beyond 8 million before Election Day, Tenuto said, because 62,000 people registered online over the weekend and the applications have not been processed yet.

Governors of Ohio, Ill. place bets over Cubs-Indians series

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Republican governors of Illinois and Ohio are betting cases of beer, pizza and other ballpark favorites on the World Series that began Tuesday between the Cubs and the Indians.

On his Twitter page Monday, Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner wagered a Chicago-style deep-dish pizza and microbrew beer from Chicago if Cleveland wins.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich returned the challenge on his Twitter page, promising to send Rauner “fan favorites” if Chicago wins. A Kasich spokeswoman said those would include items such as local beer and ballpark mustard from Cleveland.

Illinois comptroller candidates meet in televised debate

CHICAGO – The major-party candidates running for Illinois comptroller faced off Tuesday in their only televised debate on the issues of campaign donations and paying the state’s bills.

Republican incumbent Leslie Munger and Democrat Susana Mendoza appeared together on Chicago’s WTTW, at times interrupting one another.

Both insisted they are independent despite support from the leaders of their parties, Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan.

Munger, a businesswoman,

“We are working hard to turn out voters across the state with a strong focus on early voting and absentee ballots,” Illinois Republican Party spokesman Steven Yaffe said.

Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan of Chicago also is chairman of the Illinois Democratic Party. His

Hand, foot, mouth disease spreads on U of I campus

URBANA – University of Illinois officials are reporting new cases of hand, foot and mouth disease among students on the Urbana campus.

Dr. Robert Palinkas told the News-Gazette that about 10 new cases have brought the total to a little more than 70 since the beginning of the semester.

He said campus housing units are focusing on sanitation and that some affected students

spokesman, Steve Brown, said early voting efforts are a “very good thing” and give voters a chance to get to the polls despite hectic schedules.

In Chicago, nearly 17,500 voters had cast ballots by the close of business Monday, the first day of expanded early voting in Illinois, according to the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners. The Chicago Sun-Times reported that an additional 22,000 voters already had voted in Chicago because early voting started Sept. 29, the earliest time voting was available before an election in Illinois.

In suburban Chicago, the first day of early voting nearly doubled the previous record. Cook County Clerk David Orr’s office said there were about 25,600 early voters Monday. That’s compared with the previous record for the first day of early voting, when about 13,800 people early voted in 2008.

“There are contests and initiatives up and down the ballot that are generating a lot of interest from voters, who obviously want to make sure their votes are cast,” Orr said.

Chicago has about 1.5 million active registered voters, which is below the 2.3 million who were registered in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

Ruling in McDonald’s payroll card suit is upheld on appeal

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – An appeals court has upheld a judge’s decision that the owners of 16 McDonald’s restaurants in Pennsylvania violated state law by paying hourly employees strictly with fee-laden debit cards.

Luzerne County Judge Thomas Burke Jr. last year granted class-action status to a 2013 lawsuit by employees who

said the payroll card they were forced to use charged fees for numerous kinds of transactions.

The three-judge Superior Court panel agreed Friday that a debit card “is not ‘lawful money’ and is not a ‘check’ ” as deemed by the Pennsylvania Wage Payment and Collection Law. The franchise owners had argued that a debit card was the “functional equivalent” of a check or lawful money.

After the suit was filed, franchise owners Albert and Carol Mueller said they would give employees the choice of being paid by check, direct deposit or payroll card. A spokeswoman for the franchise owners said they were evaluating their options.

The Superior Court said state lawmakers still are trying to decide how to regulate debit cards as a form of payment for work.

Representatives for Oak Brook, Illinois-based McDonald’s Corp. didn’t immediately return a message seeking comment Tuesday.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Authorities have been hunting for nearly two days for an Oklahoma man they say posted live videos to social media while running from police during a violent rampage that included shooting two police officers, armed car thefts, and killing his aunt and uncle, apparently attempting to cut off their heads.

Michael Dale Vance Jr., a 38-year-old man from Chandler, Oklahoma, is wanted on multiple charges, including two counts of first-degree murder. Police said he was last seen early Monday about 30 miles from the Texas border in western Oklahoma – 165 miles away from where the manhunt began Sunday night in Wellston.

The FBI is coordinating the search for Vance among several federal, state and local agencies and is deliberately being tightlipped about the information that is released so Vance isn’t tipped off to their efforts, spokesman Terry Weber said in a statement.

While the leaks do underscore the coziness between the Clintons and well-heeled donors, Trump’s reliance on the hacked emails has given even some in his own party pause, especially as he has continued to express admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“As our intelligence agencies have said, these leaks are an effort by a foreign government to interfere with our electoral process, and I will not indulge it,” Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who backs Trump, said recently in an interview with ABC News. “Further, I want to warn my fellow Republicans who may want to capitalize politically on these leaks: Today it is the Democrats. Tomorrow it could be us.”

Iraq battles IS in western town, far from Mosul The ASSOCIATED PRESS BAGHDAD – Iraqi forces battled Islamic State fighters Tuesday for a third day in a remote western town far from Mosul, but the U.S.-led coalition insisted the latest in a series of “spoiler attacks” had not forced it to divert resources from the fight to retake Iraq’s second-largest city.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi acknowledged that the militants briefly seized the local government headquarters in the western town of Rutba, offering new details about the assault, which U.S. and Iraqi officials have sought to downplay since it began on Sunday.

The White House envoy to the U.S.led coalition battling IS insisted the militants’ strategy was failing, saying there had been “no diversion whatsoever” of forces taking part in the Mosul operation, which is expected to take weeks, if not months.

“Daesh is trying to launch spoiler attacks,” Brett McGurk told reporters at a Baghdad news conference, using the Arabic acronym for IS. “This was expected, it’s planned for, and we can expect more of it.”

The complex assault on Rutba, located hundreds of miles south of Mosul, is just the latest IS attempt to try to divert Iraqi military resources from the fight for the militants’ last major urban bastion in Iraq. Last week, the group launched a similar attack in and around the northern city of Kirkuk,

some 100 miles southeast of Mosul, igniting gun battles that lasted two days and killed at least 80 people.

McGurk said the militant attacks on Rutba were carried out by “small, isolated teams” and were “easily defeatable.” But he acknowledged there was still a “small Daesh presence” in two

neighborhoods.

The Iraqi military has insisted throughout the Rutba assault that the situation is under control, without offering further details.

Al-Abadi acknowledged Tuesday the militants did have some initial battlefield successes at the start of the offensive Sunday. “They took control, it’s true, of the municipal headquarters,” the Iraqi prime minister told reporters.

But he said Iraqi security forces drove them out “within hours” and had regained control of the town.

However, Rajeh Barakat, an Anbar provincial councilman who sits on the security committee, said earlier Tuesday that IS fighters still were clashing with security forces in two southern neighborhoods of Rutba.

“We have reports saying the militants killed some civilians and members of the security forces, but we don’t know how many,” he said.

Near Mosul, fighting continued Tuesday in a belt of villages and towns to the north, east and south of the city.

Maj. Gen. Haider Fadhil said the Iraqi special forces had reached a village about 4 miles from the eastern edge of Mosul.

WASHINGTON – Poring through thousands of private, stolen emails from Hillary Clinton’s confidants has become a daily ritual in Washington.

The hacked emails – some mundane, others laced with intrigue about election strategy, snarky barbs, whining about salaries or perceived slights – provide an inside, real-time view of the insecurities, sniping and self-promotion that churn beneath the surface of a heated presidential campaign.

Yet it’s also uncharted territory fraught with ethical dilemmas: Should a private individual’s stolen correspondence be read? How does someone respond publicly when they’re the subject of a private email? Have the emails been altered?

Nearly every morning since Oct. 7, WikiLeaks has tweeted out an alert that it was publishing on its website anoth-

tary of State Colin Powell. The FBI has opened a criminal investigation into the DNC thefts, but U.S. intelligence agencies are firmly pointing to the Russian government.

Donald Trump said he doubts the Russians are behind the cyberattacks. For weeks, the Republican nominee has highlighted the contents of the hacked emails on Twitter and in his speeches, as his campaign issues multiple news releases a day.

Despite Trump’s bombast, no bombshell revelation has emerged to significantly alter the presidential race or prompt calls for the Democratic nominee to drop out – as happened with Trump after the leak of a decade-old video of him vulgarly bragging about groping women.

In a few instances, the messages actually have undercut Trump’s talking points. Rather than the well-oiled, octopus-tentacled cartel of international conspiracy painted

Have Democrats conceded House seat?

Democratic House candidate John Bartman was appointed to the ballot in July when Rep. Jack Franks, D-Marengo, dropped out of the race to run for McHenry County Board chairman. Bartman is not getting help from the House Democrats, who appear to have all but conceded.

Rep. Franks’ district is solidly Republican. President Barack Obama lost it by eight points four years ago.

Franks has been able to win it because, well, he’s Jack Franks. He talks a good Republican line back home and takes some high-profile votes against his own party. Bartman is no Jack Franks.

Even so, the Republicans say they want to “drown” any possible chance that Bartman may have, particularly in a year like this. So they’ve launched a negative cable TV blitz, with similar ads on radio and in the mail.

As of Oct. 21, Republican candidate Steven Reick had reported $187,000 in contributions since Oct. 1, which is about $65,000 more than he and the Republicans spent in this district during the entire third quarter.

“You can always judge a person by who their friends are,” the spot begins. “Take John Bartman, a handpicked 2003 IDOT patronage hire of disgraced Gov. Rod Blagojevich, and chosen political tool of Mike Madigan.

As we’ve discussed before, the Republicans truly believe they have found the magic elixir this year by constantly invoking the horribly unpopular Speaker Madigan’s name.

GOP Rep. Dwight Kay, for instance, was quoted in the Belleville News Democrat last week as saying: “The first thing we need to do to get the budget balanced is to see that Mike Madigan goes home.”

That’s a pretty tall order, but if it works electorally and the Republicans hold onto their incumbents like Kay and pick up some Democratic seats, they’ll undoubtedly say that Madigan has become so toxic to his own members that it’s time for him to go.

Some of the Republican ads I’ve seen this year mention Madigan’s name even when it’s not particularly relevant to the ads’ messaging.

Perhaps the inclusion gives the attack added weight because Madigan is so unpopular.

It also is likely designed to keep the Republican “theme” going regardless of content. But I have also come to suspect it’s being done so they can claim that they used Madigan in almost all of their negative ads and that’s why they prevailed over the Democrats.

And, hey, if it doesn’t work, well, just look at Gov. Rauner’s comments throughout the summer and fall for a preview of what they’ll say the day after the election.

The governor has repeatedly pointed to Madigan’s “undemocratic” legislative district map, which he says has “rigged” the election against the Republicans. You gotta figure he’ll use that as his excuse if Madigan comes out on top, as well as infinite references to Donald Trump’s expected miserable performance.

But, wait. Aren’t quite a few pundits saying that Trump’s repeated refrain that the election will be rigged hurting him further by depressing his base of support?

They could be right, but Gov. Rauner has added a twist.

“We’ve got a system that is rigged,” Rauner told WAND TV’s Doug Wolfe in late August.

But then he did something that Trump isn’t doing. He talked about a solution.

“We’ve got gerrymandered districts that are shaped like spaghetti

noodles in many cases designed to protect incumbents.” So, Rauner said, to fix this, Illinoisans need to support reforms, such as redistricting and term limits.

And whenever Rauner says this he adds that the best way to get those reforms is to elect more people who will work with him, mainly Republicans.

And the worst thing to do is to vote for anyone associated with his arch enemy Speaker Madigan.

So, what Rauner is doing is quite clever. He uses Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric without all that “nasty” Trump baggage.

Of course, if Trump does unintentionally depress his own base, that would be really bad news for Rauner, who is counting on that base to turn out and vote his way – which is one reason why he won’t say anything that directly criticizes Trump.

What’s that old saying about the best laid plans?

Jack Franks the Democrat was able to avoid defeat for 18 years in a Republican district, which makes Rauner’s argument about redistricting reform look just a little silly. The point is, though, strange things happen in politics. Stay tuned.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR New Laraway School makes sense for safety reasons

To the editor: I have lived in Laraway School District 70C since 2006. My children are currently enrolled at Laraway. When I heard that the board wanted to build a new school, I was very excited.

The last couple of years it has been getting much more dangerous with all the trucks. I live on Brandon Road and the last year I took my children to school rather than the bus coming to pick them up.

Their safety was a concern because it was hazardous for the bus to stop for too long due to all the speeding trucks. When dropping them off at school, it was a whole different kind of adventure.

Trying to get in and out of the school driveways was so scary and dangerous.

The train is another thing that is a huge concern. Watching my daughter play softball

and the children playing on the fields so close to the speeding trains is a big safety issue.

To have a new school in a much safer location will mean so many great things. With 26 acres of land the kids will have so much more space for athletics and education. With the plans the board and administration have for the new school, I feel the kids and teachers will enjoy teaching and learning even more.

Financially, I feel that Laraway has proved that they have earned high recognition and they would never put the district in financial trouble. As a homeowner, I believe that I will not be negatively impacted by this great opportunity for my children to experience a new school. In November I will definitely be voting in favor for the new school, and I hope that many other families will be doing the same.

Strong offense leads Lockport past Plainfield South

kjasnica@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Lockport girls volleyball team had every reason to make excuses this postseason.

Just games before it began, setter JoDee Kovanda went down with an ankle injury and the Porters had to redo their lineup. Two new players would be on the court and old starters in different spots.

They needed players to step up and get everyone on the same page.

Three players helped set up a good introduction. Libero Emma Sweeney makes a perfect pass and setter Bella Cosentino sets up an eager Jasmine Raudys, who bounces the ball where no one touches it.

That strong offense helped lead Lockport to a 25-18, 25-16 win over Plainfield South in the Class 4A Joliet West Regional semifinal on Tuesday.

“Personally, being a senior, I love stepping up and being a leader for the team,” Cosentino said. “Especially when Jasmine is on the court, I know that she is one of my go-to players and I can just set her and she’ll put the ball away. We’ll move on from there with a lot of energy.”

Raudys created a lot of energy for the Porters (23-12) with a court-high seven kills, .667 hitting percentage and two blocks. The senior hit very smart for a middle and earned an equal amount of kills tipping as she did when she brought the heat.

“That’s what we needed to see happen, someone to step up and do that,” Lockport coach Nick Mraz said. “As a three-year starter and a senior, she doesn’t want to see this run end. What

She woke up a little bit in our last tournament, and now she’s been taking over matches, whether it is blocking or putting the ball away.

“Our second middle is getting out there to close and is talking and communicating. They’ve been big for us all year; now more than ever, we need people to terminate the ball.”

“If I have the hitting shot open, I’ll put it down,” Raudys said. “It always

brings a lot of energy, but a tip in the right spot does the same thing just as well. We [Raudys and Cosentino] have always connected well, it’s just coming together really well for playoffs.”

Cosentino and Hannah Pacheco connected well with the hitters and had nine and eight assists, respectively. Outside hitter Serene Jones tallied six kills and 10 digs, while Sweeney had nine digs, and right side Bri Orlowski added four kills.

Overall, Lockport looked strong but had some minor kinks.

There were a few missed serves and a few balls that dropped. Fans could see that those types of errors frustrated the entire team. Despite having to change before the most important time of the year, the Porters are not giving any excuses. They plan on improving those kinks in a short period of time.

Joliet West volleyball rebounds to beat H-F SUBMITTED REPORTS

JOLIET – Joliet West’s girls volleyball team came back from a 1-0 deficit to defeat Homewood-Flossmoor, 22-25, 25-18, 25-14, in the Class 4A Joliet West Regional semifinal.

With the win, the Tigers (26-9) will face Lockport in the regional championship match at 6 p.m. Thursday.

West is the No. 6 seed and Lockport is the No. 4 seed in the Romeoville Sectional.

West had three standout performances to pick up the win. Jenny Koerner hit a team-high 10 kills and added seven digs and three aces. Amanda Paez dished 15 assists and eight digs and Chinyere Agba added six blocks and five kills.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL Class 4A T.F. South Regional: Minoo-

ka beat Romeoville, 25-13, 25-7, behind Taylor Baranski’s 19 digs. Allie Papesh had eight kills and Rocky Perinar and Holly Bonde added five kills.

Brooklyn Bachmann had 21 assists.

In the title match at 6 p.m. Thursday, the Indians will play T.F. South,

which topped Lincoln-Way West, 2523, 20-25, 25-23.

Class 4A Lemont Regional: With Lemont’s 19-25, 25-14, 25-21 win over Oak Lawn, the Indians will face Benet in the 6 p.m. Thursday final. Benet topped Bolingbrook, 25-10, 25-9.

Class 4A Oak Forest Regional: Lincoln-Way East will play Bradley-Bourbannais in the 6 p.m. Thursday final after beating Joliet Central, 25-6, 25-17.

Class 3A Rich Central Regional: Providence and Coal City will meet in the 6 p.m. Thursday regional final. The Celtics topped Evergreen Park, 25-11, 25-13, and Coal City beat Rich Central, 25-14, 25-18.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL Alles picks up fourth honor: St. Fran-

cis junior Leah Alles (Providence) was named the CCAC Volleyball Defender of the Week for the fourth time this

season after averaging 6.09 digs per set in three matches.

In the win against No. 24-ranked Webber International, she totaled 32 digs before collecting 15 against Southeastern and 20 versus Warner. She ranks sixth in the NAIA in digs per set (6.01) and seventh in total digs (679) and has helped USF to a 21-10 record, 10-2 in the CCAC.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL USF women, men fifth: For St. Fran-

cis, both the men’s and women’s programs received a No. 5 ranking in the NAIA Division II Basketball Coaches’ Top-25 Preseason Poll.

The women won the CCAC regular-season championship last season and claimed their first NAIA postseason appearance in 14 years. Under coach Samantha Quigley Smith, the Saints were 28-5 overall.

Defending national champion Marian received all 12 first-place votes to earn the spot in the rankings with 312 points. Southern Oregon was next with 296, followed by Dakota Wesleyan (283), Morningside (280) and USF (277).

“We’ve been working really hard throughout all of our practices and have put a lot of time and effort into our new lineup,” Cosentino said.

“Yeah, losing JoDee was a big loss, but we are coming together well and are going to improve going forward.”

Coming together was the main theme for Plainfield South (10-22-1) this season.

And the Cougars put a huge effort forward and never let the ball die two nights in a row. On Monday, South won, 23-25, 25-17, 25-20, over T.F. North and at times against Lockport, the Cougars played pointfor-point.

Becca Langys led the court with 12 digs. Riley Sawin posted a teamhigh six kills, Claire Griffin added five and Maggie Klebenow had four.

Setters Melissa Jordan and Sophia Berta had seven and four assists, respectively.

South will see Langys, Jordan, Berta and Klebenow graduate.

“I’ve been fortunate to coach these seniors on and off since sixth grade. I’ve known all four of them since they were 2. They’re all like little sisters to me watching them grow up, playing together and having this be the last season was an amazing thing to see. They really brought us together as far as unity goes.”

Lockport will face Joliet West in the regional championship match at 6 p.m. Thursday. West topped Homewood-Flossmoor, 22-25, 25-18, 25-14.

The Porters are happy with the regional win, but already have higher expectations for themselves Thursday.

“You’ll see a really good team on Thursday,” Raudys said.

CLEVELAND – Corey Kluber got the Cleveland Indians off to a great start and Roberto Perez finished off the Cubs in their first World Series game since 1945.

Kluber pitched neatly into the seventh inning, Perez hit two home runs and the Indians beat the Cubs 6-0 in the opener Tuesday night. AL Championship Series MVP Andrew Miller escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the seventh and got out of trouble in the eighth, preserving a 3-0 lead.

In a matchup between the teams with baseball’s longest championship droughts, the Indians scored twice in the first inning off October ace Jon Lester and were on their way.

Perez drove in four runs – he became the first No. 9 batter to homer twice in a Series game, and the first Indians player to accomplish the feat. He hit a threerun drive to put it away.

Francisco Lindor added three hits, helping Cleveland manager Terry Francona to improve to 9-0 in the Series.

Francona’s success includes sweeps by his Boston teams in 2004 and ‘07.

The Game 1 winner has taken the title in the last six Series and 17 of 19.

Trevor Bauer, trying to come back from a sliced pinkie, starts Game 2 for the Indians on Wednesday night against Jake Arrieta. Because the forecast called for an increased chance of rain later in the evening, Major League Baseball took the extraordinary step of moving up the first pitch by an hour to 6:08 p.m.

Kluber struck out eight in the first three innings. He combined with Miller and Cody Allen to fan 15.

With the Indians hoping for their first title since 1948 and the Cubs seeking their first since 1908, Lester stumbled in the opening inning.

Cleveland loaded the bases with two outs, Jose Ramirez had a run-scoring swinging bunt single and Brandon Guyer was hit by a pitch.

Lester had been 3-0 in three Series starts with a 0.43 ERA. Perez, who had three homers in 153 at-bats during the regular season, connected in the fourth for a 3-0 lead. His drive in the eighth was his third homer this postseason.

On a night of civic pride, LeBron James and the NBA’s Cavaliers received their championship rings next door prior to their season opener, and Cleveland hosted a World Series opener for the first time.

The Cubs had not played in the Series since five weeks after Japan signed the Instrument of Surrender ending World War II. Kluber, whose win in the All-Star Game gave the AL home-field advantage on the Series, improved to 3-1 in the postseason and lowered his ERA to a sparkling 0.74. He is on track to start Games 4 and 7 in the manner of an oldstyle ace.

He was pitching on six days’ rest this time, and his two-seam fastball was darting through the strike zone. He was helped by plate umpire Larry Vanover, whose generous calls on the low, outside corner contributed to 11 called strikeouts, six against Cubs batters.

Kluber struck out nine in six innings and walked none. He stranded Ben Zobrist after a leadoff double in the second

and David Ross following a one-out single in the third.

Kyle Schwarber, making a surprise return in his first big league game since tearing knee ligaments on April 7, doubled off the right-field wall in the fourth – a drive kept in by a stiff wind on a 50-degree night. Kluber then got Baez to fly out.

Zobrist’s leadoff double in the seventh finished Kluber, and Cleveland loaded the bases with no outs against Miller on Schwarber’s walk and Javier Baez’s single. Pinch-hitter Willson Contreras flied to Rajai Davis in short center, and Davis threw home rather than double up Schwarber, who had strayed far off second.

Using his intimidating slider, Miller struck out Addison Russell and David Ross to escape the jam, then fanned Schwarber to strand runners at the corners in the eighth, his 46th pitch. Miller has thrown 20 scoreless innings in postseason play, including 132/3 innings with 24 strikeouts this year.

Allen completed Cleveland’s fourth postseason shutout and second in a row.

Ramirez also had three hits each for the Indians, who beat Toronto in the ALCS despite hitting just .168. Zobrist had three hit for the Cubs.

Lester gave up three runs, six hits and three walks in 52/3 innings, and was rattled by Vanover’s calls, barking at the umpire in the third, then stopping for a discussion at the inning’s end.

Up next: While Arrieta went 18-8 with a 3.10 ERA during the regular season, he struggled to a 5.01 ERA in his final four starts. He allowed four runs over five innings in Game 3 of the NLCS. Bauer lasted only two outs in his ALCS when his pinkie, cut in a drone accident, began bleeding.

Lincoln-Way C. upsets JCA; Plainfield C. survives

dgoss@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Lincoln-Way Central girls volleyball coach Mary Brown has been referring to her players as “practice Olympians.”

“They’re so good in practice,” she said. “But they have struggled all year at game time, doing what they do in practice. That’s been my battle.”

The battle ended Tuesday night, at an ideal time. The Knights, seeded No. 9 in the Class 4A Romeoville Sectional, came out and played perhaps their best match of the season, upsetting No. 5 seed Joliet Catholic, 25-18, 25-16, in the semifinals of the Plainfield Central Regional.

Lincoln-Way Central (15-20) advanced to Thursday’s 6 p.m. regional final against No. 3 seed Plainfield Central, which was pushed to three sets before eliminating No. 14 Andrew, 2516, 24-26, 25-16, in the other semifinal.

“We really communicated well, we played with a lot of energy and got some great defense,” Knights setter/hitter Kylie Kullinski said. “We had some great digs, so I was happy, I didn’t have to move that much. Our

defense was the best thing we had going tonight.”

Junior libero Lucy Chesla, all 5-foot-4 of her, led the way with 16 digs.

Kullinski, Dani Lauer and Kate White chipped in eight apiece.

“That’s what we do,” Chesla said of meeting the floor on numerous occasions. “We were all really determined.

We knew we had this in us.”

“We knew we have the defensemen, but they have not realized their potential,” Brown said.

Cassidy Wyman, a setter by trade, led the Knights with six kills and Kullinski and Hannah Stacey contributed five apiece. Kullinski added three blocks and Liz Neitzel and Val Connolly had two apiece.

“This absolutely was one of our team’s better performances of the season,” Brown said. “I felt really good for the girls. This was a nice little pat on the back for them.”

JCA (19-16-1) had its string of consecutive regional titles and consecutive 20-win seasons both snapped at 15.

The Angels started slowly in the first set and never got into a rhythm.

“They came out and set the tone,” JCA coach Christine Scheibe said of

the Knights. “We weren’t passing well; we got ourselves in a hole from the beginning, and we never got out of it. We played too tentatively.

“Nothing went our way, either. We just couldn’t get any momentum of any kind.”

With outside hitters Taylor Zurlienne and Emily Holbrook taking charge, the Angels rallied from a 17-11 deficit to get back within 17-14 in the first set. However, they got no closer.

It was 22-18 before Central scored the final three points.

JCA fell behind, 9-4, in the second set before rallying to take an 11-10 lead, its only lead of the night. However, with Kullinski and Neitzel making big plays, the Knights went back ahead, 16-13. JCA battled to within 1615, but Central scored nine of the last 10 points to end it.

Zurlienne had 13 digs, Holbrook seven kills and two aces, and Sarah Nahas 12 assists and 11 digs for the Angels.

In the first match, Plainfield Central (23-12-1) rode the strong play of standout setter Ashley Shook to finish off upstart Andrew (12-22). Shook notched 33 assists and four kills.

Taylor Landfair totaled 12 kills, Kory Beard 10 and Regan Trueblood seven.

Katie Shook had 18 digs.

“We have some senior leadership, but we’re still young,” Wildcats coach Erik Vogt said. “Taylor Landfair is a freshman and this was her first time in the postseason. A lot of the girls play club, but this is the first time they’ve been in a one-and-done like this. The underclassmen didn’t want to lose for the seniors. They are starting to understand there’s a lot of pressure.”

When Vogt spoke, he did not know his team’s Thursday opponent. Regardless, he said he felt the Wildcats “will play more consistently. We’ll feel a lot more comfortable. We learned we can overcome obstacles. Winning in three tonight may help us a lot.”

Central pulled away from Andrew in the middle of the first set and finished strong for a 25-16 win. In the middle set, the Wildcats went on a 7-0 run to lead, 15-14, but Andrew took advantage of Central errors and scored the last two points to win, 26-24.

It was 12-9 Andrew in the decisive third set, but the Wildcats outscored the Thunderbolts 16-4 the rest of the way for a 25-16 winner.

Providence boys soccer falls in OT to Washington

cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Providence Catholic’s boys soccer team got just what it was hoping for in Tuesday’s Class 2A Providence Sectional semifinals at Bishop Kaffer stadium.

That was the opportunity to meet up with George Washington, the same team that eliminated them in last year’s sectional finals.

While the Patriots controlled the play and had many more good opportunities, the Celtics held their own behind a great effort in goal from Scottie Slocum and even managed to tie things twice in the second half before finally running out of gas in overtime.

In the pair of 10-minute extra sessions, Angel Arismendiz and Felipe Ramirez each scored a goal and assisted on the other to help Washington claim a 4-2 victory.

As a result, the Patriots advance to Friday’s 6 p.m. championship match, where they take on Bremen, which captured a 6-1 win over Morris in the earlier semifinal.

“I’m really happy with how the

guys responded,” said Celtics coach Dan Potempa, whose team finished with an 11-9-1 mark. “We knew that we were going to have a tough game. They beat us 4-0 pretty good last year and we could have been defeated before we walked on the field, but they didn’t have that attitude. They thought that they had a good shot to win.

“We got down and fought back.

Then we got down again and lost a player and it didn’t matter, they kept fighting. Things didn’t go our way in overtime, but we still didn’t give up and I’m proud that they didn’t give up and had confidence in themselves.

Scottie was definitely huge for us.

They could have easily had six or seven if he didn’t make some huge saves.”

In the opening half, several Washington players applied good pressure but Slocum did an excellent job of keeping them at bay. Ramirez, Raul Garcia and Arismendiz had the best early chances.

In the 19 th minute, the Patriots nearly connected when Ramirez sent a corner kick in front and the effort was headed off the post before defenders cleared the loose ball away.

Arismendiz, Carlos Martinez and Ramirez were thwarted over the next few minutes before Cam Cutler was fouled to set up a free kick, but Luke Picard’s effort was halted by keeper Raymon Rosas.

After Alberto Solis had a corner kick punched away and Ramirez saw another try stopped by Slocum, the Patriots finally connected in the 37th minute when Martinez sent a pass in front to Esteban Luna, who put in the short attempt.

In the final half, Cutler went wide on a shot and Jacob Purvis sent in a long free kick that was headed away before the Celtics caught a huge break when the Patriots were called for a hand ball in the box. Picard’s successful penalty in the 53rd minute evened things.

A bit later, Slocum punched away a corner by Solis and then hauled in a liner from Ramirez before the Patriots moved back in front at 2-1 in the 59th minute when Martinez hit a long try.

Shortly after Slocum stopped a driving Arismendiz, the Celtics lost a man to a red card. Solis had a liner punched away not long before Juan

Landeros was denied on a header.

But in the 71st minute, Providence made it 2-2 when Purvis sent a pass to Picard who connected from long range. Luna and Arismendiz had good tries stopped in the late going to force overtime.

In the first overtime, Arismendiz and Ramirez were denied before the pair teamed on a corner kick with Arismendiz connecting in the 86th minute. The two were at it again in the 92nd minute when Ramirez was the recipient of a pass in front and put in the short shot.

In the other semifinal match, Bremen defeated Morris (8-12), which was making its fifth sectional in six years. Senior Josh Lain scored the lone goal for Morris, which only had two seniors, with Matt Samolis being the other.

“Their players are very sound,” Morris coach David Valdivia said. “All of them are very fast, they’re smart on the ball and they can finish. Our conference is pretty tough with DeKalb, Sycamore and Kaneland, but they didn’t have the guys with the size, speed and the soccer IQ as Bremen had.”

Our other Class 7A games are No. 19 Lincoln-Way Central (6-3) at No. 14 Reavis (7-2) at 7 p.m. Friday and No. 17 Highland Park (7-2) at No. 16 Plainfield North (7-2) at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Reavis can score points, but the Rams are an opponent Lincoln-Way Central can beat if it plays well. That would set up a home game next week against unbeaten Rolling Meadows.

Plainfield North landed the first home game in school history, and with the way the Tigers have been playing, they can get their first playoff victory against Highland Park and set up a second-round game against No. 1 Bradley (9-0).

Our area has one game in each of four other subdivided classes, and three of the four should win.

Lemont (9-0), the No. 1 seed in Class 6A, already has beaten No. 16 Oak Forest (5-4), 34-0, and should do so again at 7 p.m. Friday. Morris (7-2), No. 3 in Class 5A, will have too much for No. 14 Marion (5-4) at 4 p.m. Saturday and No. 4 Wilmington (9-0) should advance in Class 3A against No. 13 Corliss (6-3).

In Class 4A, meanwhile, Coal City (5-4) is a No. 14 seed and will visit No. 3 Genoa-Kingston at 7 p.m. Friday. It’s not that the Coalers will not put up a good fight, but winning the game will require a monumental effort.

An interesting side note is that Wilmington could host Byron in Round 2. Genoa-Kingston and Byron both are members of the 11-team Big Northern Conference. They did not face each other and both finished the season unbeaten and with similar dominance factors against similar schedules.

Qualifiers within each class are seeded by record first and then by playoff points (opponent victories).

The slightly subjective element comes in when the 32 teams in a given class are subdivided into two 16s or four 8s.

Regardless, there still can be good breaks or bad breaks depending on the draw you receive. A 9-0 or 8-1 opponent may not be that daunting, but a 6-3 or 7-2 may be an opponent you did not want to see.

Reviewing the 10 schools from the Joliet area that made the playoffs, my feeling is that most of our teams received about as good a draw, at least in Round 1, as could be expected.

Beginning in Class 8A, which like Class 7A has a 1 through 32 seeding, Lincoln-Way East (7-2) is in an ideal spot for a 19th seed. The Griffins will travel to Lane Stadium at 11 a.m. Saturday to take on Chicago Taft (8-1). Despite playing an opponent with a better record, East should roll.

Lockport (6-3), the 27th seed, is playing an unbeaten foe when it travels to No. 6 St. Charles East (9-0) at 7 p.m.

Friday. It’s not that the Porters can’t win, but this was the quality of opponent they could have expected with Class 8A being as deep as it is. The issue for Lockport is more that quarterback Ben Davis still may be sidelined than who the opponent is.

The area’s other Class 8A qualifier, 28th seed Joliet West (6-3), in a way received a good draw when it learned it will travel to No. 5 Oswego (9-0) at 7 p.m. Friday. The two Southwest Prairie adversaries met in Week 3, with Oswego winning 7-3. Both teams probably are better now, but the Tigers have confidence from having shown they can play with the Panthers.

One key will be whether the West offense can solve an Oswego defense that has been rock solid all season. Another is whether the West defense can forget last week’s 47-7 loss to Plainfield North and get back to where it was before that.

Cutler on his future with Bears: ‘Whatever happens, happens’ The QB addressed the media for the first time since injury in Week 2

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com LAKE FOREST – No one understands his situation with the Bears better than Jay Cutler himself.

That may be obvious, but it’s worth the reminder when we in the media can pontificate about his future, and his own head coach can make the starting quarterback position foggy, but Cutler knows what’s going on.

Back from a thumb injury that kept him out the last five games, Cutler addressed the media Tuesday, opening with a smirk and a, “Missed you guys,” which he clarified was a joke.

Like we saw in 2013 when Josh McCown played well in his absence, or in 2014 when his offensive coordinator threw him under the bus and his head coach benched him, Cutler was matter-of-fact. He even used a famous Bill Belichick line to describe his reaction to John Fox making it seem like Hoyer could keep the job even when Cutler was healthy.

“It is what it is,” Cutler said.

“Anytime you have a backup quarterback – and to Brian’s credit, he played well. I think as a team, we wish we would have won some more of those ball games. But Brian went in there and did a great job. My discussions with everybody that I have relationships with in here were positive, and whenever I was ready to go, I’d be ready to go. There was never any discussion regarding that with me.”

Cutler didn’t give the cliché answer to a question about having the support of Fox. “He doesn’t have a choice, I guess, at this point,” Cutler said. “Brian is out, so I’ve got to go. I’ve had good conversations with Foxy this week, last week, the week before. There’s never been any strain in our relationship. We’re both very open and honest, and we’re on the same page.

We just want to win football games.”

The 11-year veteran did, however, echo what Fox said about the timeline vis-a-vis any quarterback controversy.

“I didn’t really get into it. I didn’t want to. It didn’t concern me,” Cut-

ler said. “I wasn’t ready to play. My thumb wasn’t healed. The doctors weren’t going to let me go. The training staff wasn’t going to let me go. It didn’t really bother me at that point.”

Cutler’s return will come on national television against the league’s best defense, and with 2017 and beyond unknown for the franchise’s longest-tenured player.

“I think those are conversations for the end of the year,” he said.

“Right now I’m working with Dowell [Loggains] and [QB coach Dave Ragone] and we’re just trying to find first downs and get our third-down conversion rate back up, score more points. That’s all we’re really trying to do and that’s all my focus is.

“Whatever happens at the end of the year, it’s supposed to happen, and we’ll go accordingly. But right now it’s not something that I worry about. It’s my 11th year, my eighth year here. I’ve seen a lot of ups and downs, and it’s how it goes. At the end of the year, we can have those conversations. Whatever happens, happens.”

Moe Joe’s offers Cajun escape in downtown Plainfield Mystery Diner PLAINFIELD – It’s October, and as the weather gets colder and I resign myself to another Midwestern winter, I can’t help but think of warmer places.

For instance, New Orleans.

While I can’t pick up and head to the Big Easy, I recently had the opportunity to try a taste of Louisiana during a visit to Moe Joe’s, a Cajun and Caribbean eatery in downtown Plainfield.

I visited Moe Joe’s for lunch with a co-worker. When we arrived, I was struck by the way the interior décor mimics the streets of New Orleans with brick walls, red cobblestone flooring and vintage-looking gaslight-inspired fixtures. A high, wood-beamed ceiling added warmth and rustic style to the dining room.

As we sat down to peruse the menu, I couldn’t help but feel intimidated. Moe Joe’s options are many, with Cajun classics such as gumbo, jambalaya, red beans and rice, and blackened catfish. The restaurant also serves a range of sandwiches, including po’boys and burgers. For the adventurous, Moe Joe’s offers frog, wild boar and alligator dishes. Appetizers include grilled andouille sausage, New Orleans-style crawfish boil and fried green tomatoes on crustinis with pimento cheese.

A server took our order, politely answering our many questions, and brought us a small loaf of warm, crumbly cornbread with cinnamon butter.

I opted for the fried catfish, which was tender, flaky and well-seasoned.

It was served with two sides of my choice, and I selected sweet potato fries, which came with a cinnamon coating, and Brussels sprouts with bacon, which added saltiness and crunch.

My co-worker decided to build her own burger, and was happy with the hand-ground beef. She said the chips that accompanied the burger were perfect, and was impressed by the large portion.

While Moe Joe’s was fun for lunch, I imagine it’s even better at dinnertime.

The bar area has a decorative tin-colored ceiling and offers an impressive draft beer list, plus more than 50 options in bottles and cans. A variety of wine and cocktails – including one called “Give Me Some Beads” – are served as well.

On Saturday, the restaurant will host a Halloween bash, with a DJ, holiday-themed drinks and prizes, and a costume contest.

Swaddling babies is not always safe Dear Dr. K: The other day, I swaddled my niece before putting her down for her nap. My sister told me that’s dangerous.

Really?

Dear Reader: My colleague Dr. Claire McCarthy, assistant professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, confirmed your sister is right.

To swaddle a baby is to wrap cloth (such as blankets or large towels) tightly around the baby, making it harder for the infant to move his or her arms and legs.

My mother said when I was an infant, I used to bang on the bars of my crib with my hands and feet. I guess, even at 6 months old, I longed for freedom and independence. Or maybe I was just ornery.

In any event, when I got that way, she swaddled me.

Perhaps you have swaddled your babies and with no ill effects. In fact, swaddling has been part of caring for babies for centuries – millennia, really.

It makes a baby feel like he’s back inside the womb, or being snuggled close. It calms many babies and helps them sleep better.

It also can really help some parents get their babies to fall and stay asleep on their backs. And that’s what pediatricians recommend to help prevent sudden infant death syndrome, or SIDS, which is more likely when babies sleep on their stomachs. Babies who are swaddled also are less likely to startle themselves awake.

But there are downsides to swaddling.

Because swaddling keeps the legs together and straight, it can increase the risk of hip problems. And if the fabric used to swaddle a baby comes loose, it can increase the risk of suffocation.

The study found when swaddled babies were put on their sides or bellies, instead of their backs, their risk of SIDS went up a lot. For those put on their bellies, especially babies more than 6 months old, the risk doubled.

The study can’t tell us exactly why the risk doubled. But one can imagine a tightly swaddled baby might not be able to get her head up if she started having trouble breathing. And if that swaddling blanket came loose and she was face down, it also might make smothering more likely.

Here’s what parents should consider when they think about swaddling: • Always put your baby to sleep on his back. This is true no matter what, but is especially true if he is swaddled.

• Make sure whatever you are using to swaddle can’t come loose.

• Babies’ legs need to be able to bend up and out at the hips for healthy development. If your baby is going to spend a significant amount of time swaddled, use a swaddling sleep sack that lets the legs move. It might not be quite as effective in calming the baby, but it is safer for the baby’s hips.

Dear Abby: I’m DEAR ABBY a lesbian dating a woman who is Jeanne still in the closet.

Phillips She now identifies as bisexual.

We have been dating for about a year.

The issue is she still is in contact with a lot of her ex-boyfriends. I don’t expect her to come out of the closet on my time. However, I do have a problem with her talking to ex-boyfriends when they don’t know she’s in a relationship.

She thinks I’m overreacting. However, she has admitted she’d have a problem with me talking to exes and not bringing up the fact I’m in a relationship.

She finally has admitted I am a friend and introduced me to her family and one other friend. It took a lot of work to get that far. I am demanding she acknowledge – at the very least – she is in a relationship. I’m not demanding she tell them it’s with a girl. I don’t want to date someone who is ashamed of me.

Most of the time when she talks to an ex, new romantic interests don’t seem to come up. I would prefer she tell them right away, although she argues it isn’t the right time to randomly bring it up in a conversation. I no longer trust her to care more about my feelings than her interests. Should I say goodbye to this one? –
