History of Postcards – Part 1 Deltiology, the term used for the collection and study of postcards, is thought by many to be one of the largest collectible hobbies in the world.

In fact, no hobby compares with collecting postcards in the way that it caters to everyone’s unique interests.

The origins of this hobby are linked with the most interesting consumption phenomena at the beginning of the 20th century – the craze for the picture postcard. Beginning between 1895 and 1900 and fading out between 1915 and 1920, these two decades, often called the “Golden Age” of the picture postcard, changed the way people communicated. Except for the mania for the postage stamp, there never has been up to that time a more ubiquitous fad for a material item.

But it was not only the imagery, or the card as a picture carrier, that mattered to the public. The postcard as a physical object had two sides. The exchange and gift economy of the postcard also included the inscriptions of the sender to the addressee.

Although the cards carried messages more or less void of information, they did serve as a sign of life and a reminder of the social relationships that existed in a certain place in time.

Whether the postcard contains a short inscription, a delicate message, a signature, a set of initials, or an interesting address, each is a snapshot of the past: a moment, a part of social history, frozen in time. These postcards were exchanged between people who knew each other and for whom the context is known. No card is totally void of useful information; the picture, stamp, postmark, message and address are all part of the life of two people in the past.

Of particular interest to those who collect postcards is the written messages found on both sides of the card. While the postcard could not serve as a medium for substantial messages, it did open a window to how people thought and communicated

Longer, more intimate messages still had to be sent by ordinary, closed letters, but by the early part of the 20th century, the picture postcard became the perfect medium for short communications.

The top postcard is an example of the address side of an undivided back era card.

Most senders were reminded under the printed “Post Card” graphic that this side was only to be used for the address.

Unlike the private postcard era, where most postage was printed in the upper right hand corner, postcards in this era required the one-cent stamp. Although postmarked in Morris on June 2, 1910, this

postcard is representative of the undivided back era. Notice that sender only has to identify the recipient by name and that they reside in the “City” of Morris.

Postmarked in Morris on July 25, 1910, the bottom postcard from the divided back era reads: “Dear ‘Okey,’ I sent the collar in the same mail as this. As the mail was only two cts. I sent the other three stamps in the letter. Your friend Donald Poul - 422 Calhoun Street.” This is a good example of people choosing to mail a postcard to send a quick correspondence, instead of a letter, because it was half the cost.

Forest Park beautification efforts continue with new trees

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – In a small way, the forest is coming back to Forest Park.

The last of about a dozen new trees were planted Saturday to beautify the large park off Rosalind Avenue. The trees are part of a grant from nonprofit organization America In Bloom and a $25,000 grant from Canadian National Railroad’s EcoConnexions program.

CN’s Jim Kvedaras said trees are an easy way to reduce the carbon footprint in communities near the railroad tracks.

“I played in this park as a kid,” Forest Park Neighborhood Council President Garland Mays recalled. “There was a basketball court, one bathroom.

It was neglected, but it was all we had.”

But when Mays brought his son here, the park was covered in weeds and broken glass, which prompted him and others from the neighborhood to seek improvements from the Joliet Park District.

“We wanted the quality of life that every neighborhood should have,” Mays said.

In the past two years, the land has been cleared, and new playground equipment, a walking track and picnic pavilion have been installed. Mays said bathrooms with plumbing are scheduled to be installed, and a second pavilion will be added next year.

“This park is a hidden jewel,” Joliet City Council member Bettye Gavin said. “These trees are beautiful. City Arborist Jim Teiber knows his trees, [but] I’m a cactus killer.”

Gavin noted the city also has planted three new trees in the play area next to the Forest Park Community Center.

“For the last two summers, this pavilion has been packed for birthday parties and celebrations. Everyone’s enjoying [the park],” said Mays, who plans to run for the park district board.

Saturday’s event featured a ceremonial tree planting, arts and crafts and distribution of milkweed seeds to attract monarch butterflies. Fields Nursery, ArborTech and Milano Bakery also donated supplies for the event.

Teiber said all of the trees planted last week will thrive with a fall planting, and a few more will be planted near the entryway in the spring. The park now has bald cypress, swamp white oak, state street maple, autumn

blaze maple, catalpa, hybrid elm and European hornbeam.

A larger sugar maple with leaves that turn bright orange in the fall already is growing near the north end of the park.

“It’s a mixture of everything. Next fall you’ll see a lot of yellow, rust and purple-red from the new trees. [The city] has more yellows because of the ash tree problem; we’ve lost a lot of the purple and burgundies,” Teiber said.

mmallory@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Nick Offerman returned Sunday to his hometown of Minooka for what’s becoming almost an annual occurrence.

The accomplished actor, a 1988 graduate of Minooka Community High School, is now the author of three books.

And each time he writes one, he plans a stop in Minooka as part of his nationwide book tours.

Nearly three years ago to the day, in October 2013, Offerman signed copies of his first book, “Paddle Your Own Canoe: One Man’s Fundamentals for Delicious Living.” In May 2015, he signed copies of “Gumption: Relighting the Torch of Freedom with America’s Gutsiest Troublemakers.”

Sunday afternoon was no different, as he introduced “Good Clean Fun: Misadventures in Sawdust at Offerman Woodshop” to his hometown crowd. The book features contributions by members of his Los Angeles-based woodworking collective, as well as his father, Ric Offerman, and his brother, Matt Offerman, who craft in Minooka.

The book has how-to lessons for all levels of woodworking experience, written by woodworkers of all experience levels.

“Once I began to strategize the book itself, I realized it would be disingenuous of me to write it alone because my woodworking life depends on the fellowship of the members of my woodshop, and my dad and brother,” Nick said.

Ric stepped to the microphone and put on a Cubs hat, saluting the team’s first trip to the World Series in 71 years.

He then explained how the Offermans became a woodworking family, as he held up his first woodworking project.

When Nick was too short to use the toilet, Ric made him a wooden step stool. Nick couldn’t believe his father still had it.

“That thing is going to the Smithsonian,” Nick joked.

Tim Heier of Milwaukee brought his daughter and niece to the signing. Emi-

ly and Greta, both 15, grew fond of Ron Swanson – Nick’s most popular role so far – on NBC’s “Parks and Recreation.”

They could have gone Saturday evening to Nick’s signing in Chicago, but Heier said seeing him in his hometown was more appealing.

“He came from a small town,” Heier said. “I wanted them to see him in a small town atmosphere. It’s been very welcoming.”

While Emily and Greta waited in line, Heier said he really appreciated the life lessons Nick speaks and writes about. He said it was apparent onstage the strong bond Nick has with his father, brother and the rest of his family.

to do a woodworking book, and he had become so busy entertaining he was missing out on quality time in the shop.

He said the compilation style of the book allows it to not only be about creating, but a neighborhood of creativity and a community of crafting for yourself.

“I don’t want people to just make things out of wood, I want them to improve their lives,” Nick said.

He believes consumerism has grown so much that people have lost touch with where goods come from and how they affect the planet.

“I don’t know who made my table, who grew the food I’m putting on it or where this rug came from,” Offerman said. “By extension, we don’t know what resources have been used or misused to make these things happen, and that’s something I want to try and alleviate.”

Offerman Woodshop uses only reclaimed and salvaged woods for projects. Even in a desert region such as Los Angeles, Offerman said the shop has more than enough wood to choose from.

MORRIS – People react to a terminal cancer diagnosis in various ways.

Some may feel numb or in shock.

Others may feel angry, scared or sad.

Still others want to know about treatment options and pain management.

None of these were at the forefront of Rene’ Genau of Morris’ mind when the doctor said the words, “You have stage 3 ovarian cancer.”

“Her primary concern was that she glorify God with her life,” Ed Genau, Rene’s husband, said.

Rene’s faith during her illness was so exemplary that Ed wrote a book about her cancer experiences to inspire others. Ed will sign copies of “Rene’ Genau – A Trophy of Grace” from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Living Word Bible Church, 304 E. Jackson St. in Morris.

“I wanted other people to be blessed and encouraged by the beauty of her life, by the beauty of God’s grace in her life,” Ed said. “It was such a blessing to me and to other people that knew her. I wanted other people to have that benefit.”

Parts of the book came from journals Rene’ herself had written on CaringBridge, a place for people to create personal websites to share health updates with loved ones. When Rene’ became too ill to write, Ed took over the entries.

Ed said he’d met Rene’ during their college years. He was struck by her beauty – and how she grew more beautiful the longer he knew her.

Neither one came to “saving faith” until around 1988 – after they were married, raising their boys and living in Morris, Ed said.

more attractive, Ed said.

“When she got the cancer, her faith just blossomed in a way that was absolutely beautiful,” he said, “and I had the privilege to see her faith in action under trial.”

Before Rene’ became ill, she was very involved in her church. She led the fellowship committee for a few years, hosted fellowship groups at her home and assisted Ed when he taught Sunday school.

Rene’ also home-schooled their three sons until they reached high school. She welcomed the boys’ friends and prepared food for them when they hung out.

“She was a great mom,” Ed said.

In 2010 after the boys were grown, Rene’ learned she had ovarian cancer.

Both she and Ed felt dumbstruck at the news, so they responded in the way that felt most natural to them.

“We came home and hugged each other and prayed together,” Ed said.

“We just asked God for the strength for whatever the future held. She really just wanted to glorify God in whatever was going to happen. That was our prayer and that’s ultimately what happened.”

Ed will never forget the day Rene’s doctor told her she had only days to live.

“She smiled,” Ed said. “The doctor scratched his head and looked at her and said, ‘Do you understand what

I just told you?’ She smiled, a very sweet smile, and she said, ‘Yes. You just told me I’m going to be with Jesus.’ ” People visited to encourage Rene’ and left feeling encouraged. When Rene’ decided she was ready for hospice care, her only worry was for Ed’s well-being.

“She said, ‘I know this is harder

for you than it is for me, so I called our pastor to come over and comfort you,’ ” Ed said.

Rene’ was 53 when she died March 9, 2014.

SHOREWOOD – “It was like a dream.”

That was how Ceil Severns of Shorewood described the feeling she had after experiencing the Oct. 5 Honor Flight Chicago. There were 107 veterans of World War II and the Korean War on the flight, which was a day trip to Washington, D.C., for a day of honor. The service of these men and women have not been forgotten. Severns was one of two women veterans who took part in this Honor Flight.

The day began with doughnuts and coffee along with entertainment by The Legacy Girls, a group similar to The Andrew Sisters who sang music of the 1940s. Severns said she knew all the words, as her family always listened to the music on the radio. She enjoyed singing along with the group before boarding their plane for the Honor Flight.

Severns joined the Marines in 1944 on her 20th birthday. She was stationed at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California. She worked in the office, and that is where she met her husband, Merle Severns. He was coming back from his tour in the South Pacific. Ceil was the first lady Marine that Merle ever saw, and it was love at first sight.

They got married just three weeks later and had two children. Ceil traveled all over Europe with Merle, and they were stationed in California, Guam, Germany and Maryland. Merle was with the military for 33 years; six years in the Marines and the remainder in the Army. Merle was in World War II as well as the Korean and Vietnam wars.

After Merle retired, they headed back to

Ceil’s hometown of Joliet.

Upon arrival in Washington on that beautiful sunny day, the groups were transferred by motorcoach to the war monuments. Ceil used the word “marvelous” numerous times to describe the sights. She found it full of history and was happy to see the parents of young children allowing them to learn the history of our country in this way. Part of the trip that amazed her was that the Honor Flight volunteers presented Ceil with a plaque honoring her husband during a ceremony of servicemenstanding at attention and singing “God Bless America.”

On the return to Midway Airport on Wednesday evening, the veterans were welcomed by military personnel, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, ROTC, a band and, of course, family and friends. Ceil said she had to pinch herself to remind her that she was actually living through this wonderful day. She said her sister’s family were there along with staff and volunteers from Joliet Area Community Hospice and her caregiver, Paula Korycki, holding signs and posters welcoming her home.

Marguerite Kronberger, chaplain at JACH, was instrumental in Ceil’s application for the Honor Flight. “It was an outstanding event. Ceil had tears of joy and was so happy and proud of her service.” During the flight, mail call letters were distributed to the veterans.

Ceil said she received hundreds of letters from hospice staff and volunteers, even those who do not know her, and it will keep her busy reading them for awhile.

For Ceil Severns and the other veterans honored, this was certainly a “dream come true.”

District 12 candidates focused on road infrastructure

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – A Democrat challenger to Will County Board will compete – along with two Republican incumbents – for one of two seats for District 12.

The challenger is Larry Gilman, of New Lenox, who is running for the board for the first time. The Republican incumbents are longtime board member Tom Weigel, as well as Raymond Tuminello, who joined in the board in 2014.

Gilman ran in the March 15 primary as the only Democratic candidate, winning with 5,027 votes. Weigel and Tuminello also ran for their party in the primary, receiving 6,353 and 6,097 votes, respectively.

Some of the issues each candidate was concerned with included infrastructure, technology, transportation and capital project funding.

Gilman, who’s also a member of Will County Progressives, said the main reason he is running for office is because of the future of his 3-yearold son, and he wants to make sure the county stays on the right path with expansion and funding.

Among the issues he said he would focus on if elected were alternative funding for capital projects, addressing the heroin epidemic in

the county and ensuring county employees have all the resources they need.

He said, when it comes to funding for capital projects – such as the new courthouse Larry Gilman or sheriff’s facility – he wants to explore alternative funding such as sponsorship or naming rights.

“I feel there is a lot of potential dollars we may be missing out on,” he said.

He also said he wants to make sure the county continues to use its resources to address the heroin epidemic.

Another issue Gilman said he wants to focus on is making sure county employees have necessary resources and he would be willing to meet with union leaders on this.

“I want to try and do some things that I’m not hearing other board members talk about. Some out-of-thebox thinking,” he said.

Tuminello said he’s running for re-election because there’s still more work to be done. He said the county is moving forward with capital and technology improvements, as well as road infrastructure.

The biggest issue for him to focus on is the construction of the new courthouse and Tom Weigel sheriff’s facility. Weigel said it’s important to continue to focus on implementing the plans for those facilities.

Another is transportation.

“There’s a lot of congestion on our roads because of the intermodal facilities. We need to expand our county roads and improve our intersections,” Weigel said.

He said county officials should lobby again for the Illiana Expressway as it would help with traffic congestion, especially the kind that arises from truck traffic.

Weigel said he has the experience of being in office for a long time and before he was on the county board, he served as a trustee on the New Lenox Village Board.

“I’ve got experience in political areas and how government works and how to get things done in government,” he said.

District 13 candidates talk Weber Road work, other priorities

aschier@shawmedia.com The candidates running for Will County Board District 13 have their minds on the roads – specifically, Weber Road.

The four District 13 contenders running for one of the two seats representing the district on the County Board all mentioned the roadway and its need for improvements in recent pre-election interviews and questionnaires.

The candidates include incumbent Mark Ferry, D-Plainfield, and newcomers Bill Thoman, D-Plainfield; Brenda Morse, R-Plainfield; and Tim Kraulidis, R-Joliet.

Plans for Weber Road, which runs along parts of the eastern border of northwestern District 13, include work on the road’s Interstate 55 interchange, expected to begin in 2017, and 2 miles of improvements to the county highway.

The County Board has set the county’s portion of engineering and construction costs related to the interchange project at $18 million.

“We need it,” Morse said of the

work, adding she wants to keep district residents informed about the project’s progress and keep it on schedule.

Morse said she would be in contact with local senior communities and Mark Ferry subdivision homeowners associations as the Weber Road improvements move forward.

As a County Board member, Morse also said she would like to work with other govern- Brenda Morse ment bodies and nonprofits, and hopes those entities can partner with the county to provide services, such as those that meet the county’s health needs, despite challenges related to state funding.

She said she thinks there are opportunities within the county for consolidation, including changing information technology services to be a countywide department, rather than a specific role that exists in each division of the county.

Kraulidis, in a response to a candidate questionnaire for Shaw Media, stated he supports the interchange project for Weber Road at I-55.

Bill Thoman He also stated in the questionnaire that he is in favor of creating a Houbolt Road bridge.

The Joliet City Council approved an intergovernmental agreement Tuesday to set in motion Tim Kraulidis the $190 million bridge and Interstate 80 interchange project.

Kraulidis said that in regard to the private sector, he would like to, “Contest burdensome regulations that stifle business and kill job growth in our community.”

Regarding Weber Road, Thoman said he is concerned that during its reconstruction, the entrance to the Carillon Lakes senior community would be closed. He said he would like to see a temporary stoplight put in at the

temporary entrance to the community, and that it should be paid for using Regional Transportation Authority funds.

Thoman also said he would like to put a referendum to voters asking whether they support the use of tax levy funds to pay back millions in debt accrued for county building projects.

He added that he thought a half percent sales tax could be a preferable option to pay back the loans.

Ferry stated in the Shaw Media questionnaire that he supported the Weber Road interstate interchange project because it “will alleviate traffic bottlenecks.”

He said in an interview that his chief concern for District 13 is ensuring roadways remain safe.

Ferry also said he is in favor of bringing union jobs to Will County and supports projects that employ local union contractors.

He wants to fairly represent all constituents, he said, and he described himself as someone who will answer the phone when members of the public call.

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Lincoln-Way District 210 officials will offer adult welding classes in the coming months at Lincoln-Way East High School, according to a district news release.

The classes will be Nov. 9, Nov. 16, Nov. 30, Dec. 7 and Dec. 14 at the school, 201 Colorado Ave., Frankfort. Each class will begin at 6 p.m. and end at 9 p.m.

The cost of the course is $150 and includes a $25 nonrefundable deposit to secure enrollment. Participants must be at least 18 years old and a high school graduate.

Space for the class is limited.

The course will teach participants welding techniques, such as creating designs and performing repairs.

“The class is an excellent starting point for those interested in a career in welding,” the news release stated.

The classes are open to anyone interested in exploring the basics

The first Special Olympics was held at Soldier Field in Chicago in the summer of 1968, following years of programs and efforts by the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation (spearheaded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver), Dr. William Freeberg of Southern Illinois University, the Chicago Park District and the city of Chicago.

Organized by Anne Burke, the first competition included 1,000 athletes from 26 states and Canada. That doubled within two years and included athletes from France and Puerto Rico.

As they say, the rest is history. Now there are 179 competitions each year and 19 Olympic-type sports.

The Minooka PD also holds its annual Cop on Top and Cops and Rodders fundraisers, which bring in the other needed funds for Special Olympics Illinois.

Meyer and the entire department are pleased they topped their average annual profit for the organization by about $4,000.

“We partner with the community to benefit the athletes, help them build confidence and self-esteem and so they can have year-round sports activities and equipment,” Meyer said. “Thank you to the community for coming out and the businesses for supporting our event. The donations helped the event become a success.”

Thanks to help from the community, the Minooka Police Department raised more than $22,000 in 2016 for Special Olympics Illinois. The biggest chunk came from the department’s Oct. 15 trivia night – a whopping $13,800 after expenses.

This is the ninth year of the annual event, and it’s becoming so popular that there was a waiting list to compete this year, Minooka Chief Justin Meyer said.

They squeezed in a couple extra tables and were able to accommodate 30 tables in all.

People come from not just Minooka, but neighboring communities to get in on the action. This includes civic organizations, groups of friends, businesses and local officials.

I attended the first trivia night nine years ago with the Channahon-Minooka Rotary Club; we had a great time.

I’m glad to see how much the event has grown, not just for the Minooka PD but for the Olympians who are the recipients of the funds.

What makes it so fun is that Minooka PD comes up with the categories and the questions. Some of the categories this year were “Game of Thrones,” geography and famous sports rants.

The event includes food at the tables, a T-shirt, raffle prizes, a 50/50 drawing and a silent auction. Trivia is played with 10 questions per round for 10 rounds.

The winner this year (drum roll, please) is the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office, who beat out last year’s Three Rivers Library Minooka branch champions.

Now that you know who your competition is, maybe you can get a leg up for next year’s event, which will be held again in October, although the date was not set by press time. Of course, the biggest winners are the kids and adults from Special Olympic Illinois. The Illinois chapter reaches more than 22,000

Trip offers students new ways to look at learning Know more

Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – One of Minooka Community High School freshman Grace Condon-Brady’s goals during her trip to Europe in June with the local Travel Abroad Program Adventures was to try escargot in France.

She was able to experience that undertaking.

“I was one of the few kids who tried it,” she said. “I had to get over the idea that it was a snail. It tasted really good.”

While in France, Condon-Brady also got to see the Eiffel Tower, the Arc De Triomphe, Notre Dame, the Louvre and painter Claude Monet’s home and gardens in Giverny. She also took a boat tour of the Amsterdam canals in the Netherlands and saw the famous Bayeux Tapestry that tells the story of William the Conqueror’s English invasion.

There were more solemn sites, as well. The students made sojourns to Anne Frank’s hiding place in the Netherlands, the Ardennes region of Belgium, and Luxembourg, home of the World War II Battle of the Bulge site, the Luxembourg-American Cemetery and the Normandy D-Day beaches.

“The two main things I enjoyed,” Condon-Brady said, “were the beaches of Normandy and the forests where the battles took place. I was used to working out of a textbook. When we got there, everything just hit me. It was a really emotional day.”

MCHS sophomore Taylor Brown had a similar experience.

“I’ve never been a big fan of history, ever,” Brown said, “but actually going to the places that it happened and going to Anne Frank’s house or the site of the Battle of Normandy was

Brown said she now has a whole new appreciation for those who give themselves to others. The trip also gave her a newfound love of history.

She was even excited to enroll in a history class in school this year.

Fifty students and eight teachers went on the TAP trip – the largest to date since the program began in 2006.

The teachers spend 18 months before the trips preparing the students, who range from seventh to 10th graders in schools in Minooka, Channahon, Joliet, Oswego, Aurora and Batavia.

Jackson said she always has loved traveling, but this was her first overseas trip. The best part of the adventure was connecting with people, she said, both those who lived in the countries and the students and teachers she traveled with.

She particularly enjoyed Luxembourg, where she got the opportunity to talk to several locals.

“I like to find adventure,” she said.

On the group’s first day, they had free time for lunch, and she and her group gave themselves the mission of trying as many different foods as they could find. One of Jackson’s favorite discoveries was stroopwafels, which she said are thin, crispy waffles with caramel inside.

Oswego East High School English teacher and TAP founder Mike Curtis said the trip was a successful one, full of fun, learning and lessons. The World War II sites were particularly astounding.

“It was a punch in the gut,” he said.

“You can’t walk through [Ardennes Forest] without picturing the battle and the soldiers all around you.”

The foxholes are still there at the Band of Brothers site, scattered around among the trees.

“We had that shared, difficult bonding experience that cemented the group that day and made it work,” Curtis said.

Joliet District 86 speech language pathologist Jim Keeton, one of the mentors on the trip, said he loved teaching about the history.

“It’s just such a wonderful opportunity to show the kids where history happened,” he said. “It’s so powerful.

You can’t feel that in a classroom.”

The TAP Adventures next trip during summer 2017 will be to Peru, where the students will tour the country and do a charity mission. In 2018, they will tour Ireland and Scotland.

There currently are a few spots still open for both trips.

Howard R. Hansen, age 85, of Crest Hill, IL., passed away October 19, 2016 after a brief illness. Born in Hartford, CT on September 13, 1931, he was raised in Wilson, CT. He was preceded by his parents, Peter Christian and Margaret Rowell Hansen.

Howard was a devoted hard-working son and a serious student. Losing his father at a very early age, he and his brother Fred had to work hard to help support the family, maintaining the poultry and egg business. He pedaled his bike to deliver the Hartford Courant on a morning route. He worked many summers at North Meadow Farms in Wilson, CT. He was a good and faithful Boy Scout, enjoying time away at summer camp when he could. Howard graduated from UCONN in 1953 with a Bache-

Born: April 15, 1916 Died: October 20, 2016 Emma Shelby (nee Hobson) made her transition into eternal life on Thursday, October 20, 2016, at Sunny Hill Nursing Home.

Emma was born April 15, 1916, in Cohay, MS. She was educated in the Mississippi school system and as a teen worked to help support the family.

In 1933 she married James Shelby and one son was born to this union. In 1951 Emma and “Jack,” as he was known, left their Mississippi roots relocating to Joliet, IL. She quickly found work at the Joliet Arsenal, where she made ammunition for the military. She also worked for the Will County Poor Farm, later renamed Sunny Hill Nursing Home. While at Sunny Hill she held various positions before retiring in 1978 as Supervisor of Housekeeping.

Emma joined Mt. Moriah Baptist Church and was a faithful member for more than 60 years.

She served on the Usher Board and Benevolence Commission. It was here that she made lasting friendships with Ida Dantzler, Corrine Hughes and many, many others. “Miss Emma” (to most people) and Jack were well respected in the church and the community and were always willing to help anyone in need.

Emma lived 100 long, happy and fulfilling years. She enjoyed cooking and working outside especially taking care of her flower garden, fruit trees and her dog Toedoe.

Emma is preceded in death by her husband, James Sr.; her parents, Alfred and Georgia Hobson; six brothers, Richard, George, Frank, Henry, Charlie and Earl Hobson; three sisters, Eliza Hunter, Velma Woodall and Dora Lee Mills.

Emma will forever be remembered by her son, James Jr. and her devoted daughterin-law, Anna; grandsons, Anthony (Sylvia) and Ricky Shelby; granddaughters, Janice (William) Herrod, Mary (Bruce) Casey, Jennifer (Ernest) Myers, and Marilyn (Kenneth) Seven; great-grandsons, Tyrie Brady, Joshua and Justin Grant, Myles Shelby, Alex, Tyler and Keaton Casey; one great-great-grandson. Kevin Pinnel; one sister, Mary L. Collins of Laurel, MS; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Beloved wife of 59 years to the late Anthony R. In his later years when he moved to Illinois, he was fond of taking the train to Chicago for a tour and a nice meal. Howard had a wry sense of humor, loved to read and spend countless hours on his computer doing research.

He leaves behind his older brother, Frederick P. Hansen of Middle Haddam, CT; nephew, Jeffrey A. Hansen of Richmond, VA; niece, Margaret Hansen Cooley of Farmington, CT; and nephew, Gregory P. Hansen of Hendersonville, NC; as well as 9 great nieces and nephews and other relatives including his Nash and Stevenson cousins.

CHICAGO – With a mix of euphoria, relief and disbelief, long-suffering Cubs fans are shaking off superstitions and setting their sights on the team’s first World Series in 71 years.

Loyal fans as far south as San Antonio, Texas, and as far west as Washington state restructured their worldviews to include the seductive possibility that they won’t be disappointed again.

“For me, personally, I had tears in my eyes. I’ve seen them come close,” said Chicago native Jimmy Tingas, 47, who owns Wrigleyville Grill in San Antonio where he caters to homesick former Chicagoans still craving hot dogs and Italian beef. “We have one more task to do. I’m confident they’re going to do it.”

Mundelein High School Dist. 120 sued after teen’s suicide

MUNDELEIN – The family of a 14-year-old Illinois high school student who killed herself last year is suing the local school district, arguing that it neglected to follow protocols that could have prevented the teenager’s death.

The lawsuit accuses Mundelein High School District 120 of not having an up-to-date suicide prevention policy at the time of Mikyla Wren’s death in October 2015, as was required by a new state law. The girl’s family is not seeking monetary damages in the lawsuit.

“We just want the school to do what they’re required to,” said her father, Thomas Hannigan.

The Mundelein High School district did not have its updated suicide awareness and prevention plan in place before the 2015-16 academic year, as required by the law, according to the lawsuit.

Feds end lease with Illinois for state park, citing neglect

CARLYLE – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said Illinois has so badly neglected a state park at the popular Carlyle Lake area that the agency is taking it back.

The Belleville News-Democrat reported that the Army Corps recently ended Illinois’ lease for the nearly 300-acre South Shore State Park. The federal agency said Illinois has allowed the park to “become degraded, resulting in unsafe conditions and minimal usable recreation facilities.”

The park is now closed for needed upgrades.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources said roadway maintenance within the site has not occurred because the state does not have a long-term budget.

The state’s lease was supposed to run through 2025 for the property at Carlyle Lake, a popular recreation area in western Illinois about 50 miles

Restaurant owner Tingas, too, is having some trouble letting go of some traditional Cubs beliefs, such as the infamous billy goat curse: “When we win the World Series, we’re going to have roasted goat, I’ll tell you that.”

Chicago officer shoots man in traffic stop encounter

CHICAGO – Officials said a Chicago police officer shot and wounded a suspect after the man fled a vehicle and confronted an officer with a weapon.

A spokeswoman for the agency that investigates police-involved shootings told WFLD-TV in Chicago that officers Sunday morning pulled over a vehicle that had been reported stolen.

Independent Police Review Authority spokeswoman Mia Sissac said one officer opened fire, hitting a man multiple times.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the man was struck in the lower extremities.

No officers were injured.

Chicago police said three men exited the vehicle and fled before one “confronted an officer with a weapon.” Police said three people are in custody and two weapons were recovered.

The wounded man was taken

to the hospital. Guglielmi said he was in serious but stable condition.

Caterpillar opening 1st permanent office in downtown Chicago

PEORIA – The Peoria-based construction and mining equipment company Caterpillar Inc. is opening its first permanent office in Chicago.

The Journal Star reported that the Caterpillar office will have 45 employees and be in the downtown Merchandise Mart building along the Chicago River. The new Chicago “Digital and Analytics Hub” expands on operations already housed in Peoria.

Specifically, the company’s Analytics and Innovation Division takes information from sensors embedded in heavy equipment and relays it to Caterpillar and others. The division was created in April 2015.

Caterpillar made the announcement during the recent “Chicago Ideas Week” event.

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – A tour bus returning home to Los Angeles from a casino trip plowed into the back of a semi-truck on a California highway early Sunday, killing 13 people and injuring 31 others, authorities said.

A maintenance crew had slowed down traffic on Interstate 10 before the vehicles crashed just north of the desert resort town of Palm Springs, California Highway Patrol Border Division Chief Jim Abele said.

The work had gone on for hours without problems, he said.

Abele said the bus carrying 44 passengers was going much faster than the truck. “The speed of bus was so significant that the trailer itself entered about 15 feet into the bus,” Abele told reporters.

It was not known if alcohol, drugs or fatigue played a role in the crash about 100 miles east of Los Angeles, Abele said. The bus driver was killed, and the truck driver received minor injuries.

BARRINGTON, R.I. – Hundreds of women, girls and other supporters proudly donned their yoga pants Sunday afternoon as they peacefully paraded around the Rhode Island neighborhood of a man who derided the attire as tacky and ridiculous.

Alan Sorrentino said the response to the letter to the editor, printed in The Barrington Times Wednesday, has been “vicious” and that he’s received death threats. He implored marchers to stay away from his home and maintained the letter was meant to be humorous.

But organizers said the socalled yoga pants parade wasn’t a protest against Sorrentino specifically but part of a bigger movement against misogyny and men dictating how women should dress.

More than 300 people – many of them women and young girls – came out for the social media-driven event.

Clinton looks past Trump, aims to help other Dems

DURHAM, N.C. – Newly confident and buoyant in the polls, Hillary Clinton is looking past Donald Trump while widening her mission to include helping Democrats seize the Senate and chip away at the Republican-controlled House.

Although Trump’s campaign insisted Sunday it was premature to count him out, it’s Clinton whose path to winning the White House has only grown wider in the race’s final weeks. Even longtime Republican strongholds such as Utah and Arizona suddenly appear within her reach Nov. 8, enticing Democrats to campaign hard in territory they haven’t won for decades.

The shifting political map has freed Clinton and her well-funded campaign to spend time and money helping other Democrats in competitive races. Clinton said she didn’t “even think about responding” to Trump anymore and instead would spend the final weeks on the road “emphasizing the importance of electing Democrats down the ballot.”

“We’re running a coordinated campaign, working hard with gubernatorial, Senate and House candidates,” said Robby Mook, Clinton’s campaign manager.

And for good reason.

After a merciless two-year campaign, the next president will face the daunting task of governing a bitterly divided nation. If Clinton wins, her prospects for achieving her goals would be greatly diminished unless her victory is accompanied by major Democratic gains in Congress.

“We’ve got to do the hard and maybe most important work of healing, healing our country,” Clinton said Sunday at Union Baptist Church in Durham, North Carolina.

In a rare admission of fallibility by the typically boastful Trump, his campaign acknowledged he’s trailing Clinton as Election Day nears.

“We are behind. She has some advantages,” Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway said. Still, she added, “We’re not giving up.

We know we can win this.”

Conway laid out in granular detail Trump’s potential path to winning: victories in Florida, Iowa, North Carolina, Nevada and Ohio, to start.

If Trump prevents Arizona and Georgia from falling to Democrats and adds in some combination of Colorado, Virginia, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania, he could reach the 270 electoral votes needed, Conway said.

It won’t be easy. A current Associated Press analysis of polling, demographic trends and other campaign data rates Virginia as solidly Democratic, while Colorado,

New Hampshire and Pennsylvania are all leaning Democratic. Arizona, remarkably, is a toss-up.

Campaigning Sunday in Florida, Trump called for voters to elect a Republican House and Senate that would “swiftly enact” his priorities, which include overhauling taxes, restoring higher spending on defense and repealing the Affordable Care Act. “We can enact our whole plan in the first 100 days – and we will,” Trump said.

If Clinton wins, Democrats would need a net gain of four Senate seats to retake the majority. House control would be much harder, considering Republicans currently enjoy their largest House majority since 1931. Democrats would need a 30-seat gain, a feat they haven’t accomplished in roughly four decades.

Clinton’s nascent focus on helping fellow Democrats comes with an inherent contradiction. For months, she deliberately avoided the strategy employed by other Democrats of trying to saddle all Republicans with an unpopular Trump. In August, she said Trump represented the “radical fringe,” rather than the mainstream of the Republican Party.

Posting ballot selfie? Check your state laws first

TRENTON, N.J. – You probably already know whether you’ll vote for Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton on Election Day, leaving one important question to consider when you walk into your polling place: Is it OK to take a picture of your ballot?

While secrecy in the voting booth has become a thing of the past for those ready to share their views and daily lives on social media, laws nationwide are mixed on whether voters are allowed to take pictures of themselves in the act or of their ballots – “ballot selfies.”

Federal judges have struck down bans on selfies in New Hampshire and Indiana, and rules have been changed in places such as California and Rhode Island. But in many states, it’s still a violation that carries potential fines or jail terms.

There are laws against sharing any photo of your ballot in 18 states, while six other states bar photography in polling places but do allow photos of mail-in ballots, according to a review

by The Associated Press.

(In Illinois, selfies are banned by a law that considers “knowingly” mark-

ing your ballot so another person can see it to be a felony that carries a prison sentence of one to three years.)

Critics said such regulations have not kept up with technology and are confusing for voters and election workers. Some states that ban ballot selfies or have moved to block them cite concerns the photos could harm the integrity of the voting process by encouraging vote-buying or coercion, although some acknowledge there’s no evidence to support those fears.

Nikola Jordan, 33, of Omaha, Nebraska, has been taking such photos for about 10 years and believes they are a great way not only to share her views on the issues, but also to stress the importance of voting and being civically active. A Nebraska lawmaker added a provision to state election law this year to allow ballot selfies.

“I was doing this for years before I learned it was technically illegal,” Jordan said with a laugh. “It’s all about encouraging other people to get involved in the process, to show it can be fun and exciting to make your voice heard [at the polls]. Don’t think of voting as some boring thing ... It’s your chance to make a difference.”

Among those filing briefs in support of ballot selfies was Snapchat, which argued they are the latest way voters, especially young adults, get involved in the political process and express support for or against a cause or a candidate.

“We had a failure to recognize the importance of online political speech, especially to the younger generation,” Bissonnette said. “The First Amendment needs to be guarded rigorously. These old laws cannot and should not be applied to the modern technology.”

California Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill last month that repeals a 125-yearold law barring voters from showing people their marked ballots. It goes into effect after the November election, but legislative analysts have found no occasion of the ban being enforced – and it hasn’t stopped people from sharing photos of their 2016 ballots.

Colorado started mailing ballots this week in the all-mail presidential election, and some ballot selfies started popping up on social media. In response, Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey on Thursday issued a reminder that publicizing completed ballots is a misdemeanor in the state.

Younger, diverse voters are reshaping California politics

LOS ANGELES – Come Election Day, California could legalize pot. Its new U.S. senator will be black or Hispanic – a first for the state. And voters could end the death penalty and revive bilingual education in schools.

The outcome of voting Nov. 8 is likely to reflect long-term trends that have seen the nation’s most populous state become increasingly diverse and firmly Democratic in its politics.

A new wave of voters – many young, Hispanic or both – are poised to contribute to generational, demographic and cultural shifts that are reshaping California. More than half of new voter registrations this year are millennials – younger people who tend to be more liberal than older Californians.

The election also could strengthen the argument that California is becoming a one-party state. Most of the new voters are registering as Democrats or independents. And the number of voters aligned with no party is on track to eclipse Republicans, whose registration numbers are in freefall.

A key indicator of the change is the race to replace U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, who was first elected in 1992. The

contest is a matchup between two Democratic women, Attorney General Kamala Harris, whose father is black and mother is from India, and Rep. Loretta Sanchez, the daughter of Mexican immigrants.

“I think that says a lot about where we are moving,” said political scientist Larry Gerston, Loretta professor emeritus at CalSanchez ifornia State University, San Jose.

In addition, policies from past decades, when the state electorate was overwhelmingly white, could be recast or reversed. Voters are being Kamala asked to repeal the death Harris penalty, which was reinstated in the 1970s but has not been carried out since 2006.

They could also dial back a 1998 voter-passed law that largely dismantled bilingual education at a time when illegal immigration was surging.

Through mid-October, more than 4 million people registered, or reregistered, to vote in California. Half signed up as Democrats, a meager 19 percent as Republicans and the rest primarily

as independents, according to an analysis by nonpartisan research firm Political Data Inc. Millennials represented over half of the new registrations. Latino registration, barely out of single digits a generation ago, represented nearly 30 percent of new voters, the data showed.

Democratic pollster Ben Tulchin, who worked for Bernie Sanders in the presidential campaign, said the influence of the new voters is being felt in competitive congressional races, where Republicans in a handful of once-safe districts are being threatened.

For Republicans, the rising influence of Hispanic voters is especially troubling in a year when their presidential nominee is Donald Trump, who has vowed to deport millions of people living in the country illegally.

The GOP’s troubles with Hispanic voters in California can be traced to 1994, when voters, with encouragement from Republican Gov. Pete Wilson, approved Proposition 187, which prohibited immigrants in the country illegally from receiving public health care, education or other social services.

The law was overturned, but it left lingering resentment with many

Hispanics at a time when the Latino population was becoming increasingly important in elections. It’s also played a role in the prominent Democratic tilt to a state that sent Republicans Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon to the White House but now doesn’t have a single Republican elected to a statewide office.

State figures released earlier this month showed the percentage of voters registered as Democrats had increased by 2 percentage points since the 2012 presidential election, while those aligned with the GOP dropped over 3 points. The share of independents, who tend to vote like Democrats, also increased.

The shift can be seen in places such as Riverside County, where Democrats now hold a thin registration edge in what once was Republican turf.

“You can track the progress Democrats have made in registration, and you can quantify the impact,” Tulchin said.

Republicans shuddered after the U.S. Senate primary in June. None of the party’s little-known candidates broke out of single digits in the vote count, allowing two Democrats to claim the two runoff spots in November, a first in the modern era.

Besides North, I really like our chances to have second-round teams in Lemont, Lincoln-Way East, Wilmington, Morris and Lincoln-Way Central. If Lincoln-Way West wins at East St. Louis, that would be a shocker. Our teams can put up a good battle in the Lockport at St. Charles East, Joliet West at Oswego and Coal City at Genoa-Kingston games, but if any of them win, it would

The way Plainfield North got things done in Friday night’s 47-7 victory over Joliet West was impressive on multiple fronts.

The Tigers (7-2) are a solid defensive team. In Ari Ekowa, they have a lightning-quick, strong defensive lineman.

Will Stoll and JJ Frey form as good a linebacking tandem as we have in the area.

Then there’s Kevin Block, who is glue as a cover cornerback. He prevented Joliet West from hitting the deep ball to Johnny Holman, intercepted one pass and nearly had another.

Alex Vonch caught 11 passes for West partly because he had a great night and partly because West threw in his direction time and time again, away from Block’s side of the field.

On offense, meanwhile, North is explosive. Tyler Hoosman and Dillon McCarthy are capable of breaking long runs at any point. Carlos Baggett, the quickest of the Tigers, sat out Friday with a toe injury. Coach Tim Kane said his return for the playoffs is uncertain, but even in his absence, North has weapons at running back.

Quarterback Brady Miller has continued to improve as the season has progressed. Connor Peplow is a quality No. 1 in a deep receiving corps.

If the Tigers’ offensive line plays as well in the playoffs as it did Friday night, North will be very difficult to eliminate.

One thing we know about Reavis is the Rams battled Lemont to the wire before falling, 28-25.

Lockport (6-3), No. 27 in Class 8A, may be without regular quarterback Ben Davis, who has been out with an illness, and will face one of the many high-quality teams in Class 8A when it journeys to No. 6 St. Charles East (9-0) at 7 p.m. Friday. Joliet West (6-3), No. 28 in Class 8A, will be at No. 5 Oswego (9-0) at 7 p.m. Friday. The Panthers beat the Tigers, 7-3, earlier this season.

All that Lincoln-Way West (5-4) can do as the No. 31 seed in Class 7A is take its best shot against No. 2 East St. Louis (9-0) in the 2 p.m. Saturday game. I saw East St. Louis in the season opener against Providence, and that team is scary. Of course, until you play the game, you never can be certain what may happen.

DUELING DROUGHTS: CUBS, Cubs pondering World Series return for slugger Schwarber

The Associated Press At long, long last, it’s true: Either the Cubs or Cleveland Indians will win the World Series.

The matchup between teams that forever waited till next year – next century, really – is finally here.

A classic Fall Classic, for sure.

Do-it-all Javier Baez, flashy Francisco Lindor, MVP caliber Kris Bryant and a bevy of young stars. Lights-out relievers Andrew Miller and Aroldis Chapman, and wily skippers Joe Maddon and Terry Francona.

Plus, intrigue if injured All-Star starter Danny Salazar and slugger Kyle Schwarber can play.

Oh, and did someone mention something about a drought?

Game 1 is at Progressive Field on Tuesday night, with the Cubs opening as a heavy favorite to win their first crown since 1908.

In the Cubs’ last visit to Cleveland, back in August 2015, they posted a 17-0 rout for the most-lopsided shutout ever in interleague play. It got so out of hand that two Indians outfielders wound up pitching.

But that’s ancient history.

For the Cubbies, this is their first World Series trip since 1945. They clinched their spot Saturday night at rollicking Wrigley Field as big league ERA leader Kyle Hendricks outpitched Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw for a 5-0 win in Game 6 of the NL Championship Series.

Favorites since opening day, Anthony Rizzo, Addison Russell and past October aces Jon Lester and John Lackey helped the Cubs cruise to a major league-leading 103 victories.

Now, they’re ready to sweep aside the Curse of the Billy Goat and the specter of Steve Bartman. And make up for the near-misses by Cubs greats such as Ernie Banks, Ron Santo and Billy Williams.

“Obviously, we know that it’s something that’s going to be talked about with the history of the organization,” pitcher Jake Arrieta said. “But it’s really not something we focus on at all.

So we just kind of disregard it and go out and play.”

The Indians also have a past full of failure and frustration. Their title drought dates to Bob Feller, Lou Boudreau, Larry Doby and 1948, trailing only the Cubs for the longest wait in the majors.

Earlier this year, LeBron James and the Cavaliers turned Cleveland into Believeland by rallying to win the NBA title. James has been loudly cheering for the Indians to bring another championship to the city.

Steady Jason Kipnis, jolly Mike Napoli and likely Game 1 starter Corey Kluber starred as the surprising Indians won the AL Central, then breezed

by Boston and Toronto in the playoffs.

The Indians did it despite a thinning rotation. Salazar hasn’t pitched since early September because of a forearm problem, Carlos Carrasco’s hand was broken by a line drive, and Trevor Bauer cut his pinkie playing with a drone.

Like the Cubs with Bartman, the spectator who infamously deflected a foul ball at Wrigley during the 2003 NL playoffs, the Indians also have a prominent fan. It’s John Adams, the man who has been beating a drum at most every home game for more than

four decades.

Even though the clubs hold spring training about 30 miles apart in Arizona, they don’t overlap a lot.

They’ve never played in the postseason and are just 9-9 against each other in interleague action.

Miller and Chapman, however, were teammates this season in the New York Yankees’ bullpen before they both got traded in late July.

Francona and current Cubs architect Theo Epstein spent even more time together. In 2004, they teamed up as the Red Sox ended a World Series championship drought dating to 1918 – when Boston beat the Cubs, by the way.

Soon, another city will be celebrating. Maybe next week, maybe next month, with Game 7 scheduled for Nov. 2.

A pair of big cities, one on Lake Michigan, the other on Lake Erie, waiting ... and hoping to end the wait.

CHICAGO – Kyle Schwarber smiled and held his arms in the air, his teammates spraying him with champagne. The Cubs had just won their first NL pennant in 71 years, and the slugger was at the heart of the party.

Well, the party in Arizona, at least.

Moments after the Cubs closed out the NL Championship Series at an electric Wrigley Field, the biggest question for the Cubs shifted all the way across the country to Mesa, where Schwarber is making an impressive comeback from major left knee surgery in April.

Game 1 of the World Series is Tuesday night in Cleveland, and the Cubs say Schwarber is a possibility for the showdown with the Indians.

“We’re not ruling anything out or anything in at this point, and we’re not going to get ahead of ourselves, either,” president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said.

The 23-year-old Schwarber went 0 for 3 with a walk while serving as the designated hitter for the Solar Sox on Saturday night in the Arizona Fall League. He watched the Cubs’ clinching 5-0 victory over the Dodgers on a tablet in the dugout between at-bats, and then was soaked by a couple of his teammates after the game.

There were no games in the Arizona Fall League on Sunday, and a spokesman for the Cubs said it was a scheduled off day for Schwarber. There was no word on the plan for the slugger for Mesa’s game against the Surprise Saguaros on Monday afternoon.

Schwarber was ruled out for the year after he tore two knee ligaments in an outfield collision with Dexter Fowler in Chicago’s third game of the season. But he had an encouraging checkup with Dr. Daniel Cooper last Monday in Dallas, clearing the way for the Cubs to take a closer look at the catcher/outfielder.

If Schwarber has no setbacks in Arizona, the possibility of putting his powerful lefty swing on the World Series roster might be too tempting for Epstein to resist, even if returning for the Fall Classic after so much time off seems like a daunting task.

Schwarber hit .333 with a franchise-record five homers in nine playoff games last year, and the Indians had 10 right-handers on their staff for the NLCS against Toronto.

Schwarber grounded out to first in his first atbat with Mesa on Saturday night. He bounced to second in the third, walked in the sixth and was robbed of extra bases on a diving catch by center fielder Noel Cuevas in the eighth.

“I felt like I put in two good at-bats,” Schwarber said. “The first two I chased a little bit, a little antsy up at the plate as expected. But once it started getting back to being normal baseball again, it started slowing down.”

Most importantly for the Cubs, Schwarber said he felt fine.

In 2015, Ricketts shelled out good money again to hire manager Joe Maddon; last season, they were swept by the Mets in the NLCS. The cornerstone of Maddon’s baseball philosophy is focus on the short term; try to win each at-bat, each inning, each game. He pulls stunts to make it fun – bringing in zoo animals, wearing pajamas on the flight home from road trips and breaking up the monotony of a long season.

But even he struggled on this night not to look back.

“You stand out on that platform afterwards and you’re looking at the ballpark and the fans and the ‘W’ flags everywhere, and truthfully you think about everybody,” Maddon said. “I think about the fans and their parents and their grandparents and

great-grandparents and everything that’s been going on here for a while.

I think about my wife, Jaye, my kids, my mom back in Pennsylvania, my dad who wasn’t here.

“It’s overwhelming,” he added finally, “and it’s awesome.”

The Cubs last won it all in 1908, which means they’ve been without a championship 40 years longer than the Indians, holders of the second-longest run without a championship in major North American pro sports. They may be the sentimental favorites, but they’re also savvy, ruthless and blessed with short memories – basically, anything but your father’s Cubbies.

Ditto for the owner. Asked what it would feel like to see that same flag fly at the end of the World Series, Ricketts admitted he already had his eye on a souvenir. It was likely to be more painful than expensive.

“I may make the ‘W’ a tattoo,” he said.

He won’t be alone.

CHICAGO – Grown men didn’t weep.

Maybe because anyone old enough to actually remember the last time the Chicago Cubs made it to the World Series would be at least 71 and know enough to stay home instead of parking himself in the middle of the pandemonium that engulfed Wrigley Field late Saturday.

Not so 78-year-old Billy Williams, a Hall of Famer and Cubs’ mainstay through the 1960s and ’70s. This was a moment he had to see for himself.

“I think about the guys I played with who never got to see this,” Williams began. “Especially Ernie Banks and [Ron] Santo. Man, we tried so hard for so many years, and now they’re gone. ... And I can’t tell you how long these fans stuck with us or how many times I heard stuff like, ‘This is the year.’

“But this,” he said with a sweep of his arm toward the still-rocking grandstand, “is finally the year.”

After believing their team was cursed by a goat, crossed by a black cat and undone by one of their own, after checking their sanity at the turnstiles for seven decades and counting, fans of the team on the North Side of town no longer needed any excuses. None needed reminding, either, that there was one hill still left to climb, starting Tuesday night in Cleveland.

But at the moment, a white flag with a single blue “W’’ fluttered in the night sky atop the huge, manually operated scoreboard in center field – a tradition begun in the 1930s so that riders on the nearby elevated train line would know when the Cubs won – and their fans basked in its possibilities.

“They win 100-plus games (in the regular season), they really have no weaknesses, they’ve got youth, veteran starting pitching ... they catch the baseball, they can slug, they get on base, and they’re relentless,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said afterward, by way of a scouting report.

“That’s a very good club over there.”

You couldn’t have said that just seven years ago, when owner Tom Ricketts forked over $875 million of the family’s fortune to buy the ballclub and that faith was tested mightily. Normally a level-headed sort, he fell in love with the Cubs soon after moving to the city as an 18-year-old to attend the University of Chicago. The Cubs went 83-78 in Ricketts’ first year, then posted five losing seasons in a row.

Eagles use defense, special teams to hand Vikings first loss THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

PHILADELPHIA – Josh Huff returned a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown, Carson Wentz outplayed Sam Bradford, and the Philadelphia Eagles beat Minnesota, 21-10, on Sunday, handing the Vikings their first loss of the season.

The Eagles (4-2) snapped a twogame slide while the rested Vikings (5-1) hardly looked like an unbeaten team after having a bye.

Bradford returned to Philadelphia for the first time since his trade to Minnesota eight days before the season opener paved the way for Wentz to start. Bradford was 7-7 in his only season with the Eagles and won his first four starts for the Vikings.

But the Eagles pressured and harassed their former quarterback all game, sacked him six times and forced his first three turnovers this season.

DOLPHINS 28, BILLS 25: At Miami

Gardens, Florida, Jay Ajayi tied an NFL record by surpassing 200 yards rushing for the second game in a row.

Ajayi rushed for 214 yards in 29 carries after totaling 204 yards a week earlier in a win over Pittsburgh. He scored on a 4-yard run and busted a 53-yarder when the Dolphins were pinned at their 3 and trailing in the fourth quarter.

The Dolphins (3-4) used an extra lineman much of the time to clear big holes for Ajayi, who tied the NFL record for consecutive 200-yard games held by O.J. Simpson, Earl Campbell and Ricky Williams. Miami overcame an 11-point deficit with 16 minutes left to end a fourgame winning streak by the Bills (4-3) and beat them for only the second time in their past seven meetings.

PATRIOTS 27, STEELERS 16: At Pittsburgh, LeGarrette Blount ran for 127 yards and two scores, while Tom Brady completed 19 of 26 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns.

Steelers quarterback Landry Jones played capably while filling in for Ben Roethlisberger, who watched from the sideline after undergoing left knee surgery last week. Making his third career start, Jones threw for 281 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

New England (6-1) remained perfect since Brady returned from his fourgame “Deflategate” suspension, emphatically responding to a push by the Steelers (4-3) with a pair of second-half touchdowns. Brady improved to 9-2 against the Steelers, throwing for 26 touchdowns and three interceptions.

The result was the team’s most complete win of the season. Oakland improved to 4-0 on the road and moved to 5-2 for the first time since 2001.

The Jaguars (2-4) added more speculation about the future of coach Gus Bradley.

COLTS 34, TITANS 26: At Nashville, Andrew Luck threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Jack Doyle with 1:55 left to put Indianapolis ahead to stay, and the Colts rallied to beat the Titans for their 10th straight win against their AFC South rival.

The Colts (3-4) came in having lost two of three, including blowing a 14-point lead in an overtime loss last week at Houston. But Luck improved to 8-0 against the Titans (3-4) with yet another comeback win. He finished with 353 yards passing and three TDs, the last after Tennessee went up 23-20.

T.Y. Hilton caught seven passes for 133 yards, including a 37-yard TD. The Colts shook off 12 penalties for 131 yards in pulling out their 15th win in 16 games against Tennessee.

LIONS 20, REDSKINS 17: At Detroit, Matthew Stafford threw a go-ahead, 18-yard touchdown pass to Anquan Boldin with 16 seconds left.

The Lions (4-3) extended their winning streak to three games. The Redskins (4-3) had won four straight.

Stafford, who set up game-winning kicks in the previous two games, led his team to another win in the 100th game of his career. He was 18 of 29 for 266 yards, one TD and no turnovers.

Kirk Cousins scored a go-ahead TD on a 19-yard run with 1:05 left.

JETS 24, RAVENS 16: At East Rutherford, New Jersey, Ryan Fitzpatrick replaced an injured Geno Smith and led the Jets on three scoring drives, and a rejuvenated defense came up with two rare interceptions.

Fitzpatrick came in for Smith in the second quarter and led the Jets on a go-ahead drive capped by a 13-yard touchdown catch by Matt Forte. Fitzpatrick finished 9 of 14 for 120 yards and a touchdown as the Jets (2-5) snapped a four-game losing streak.

Baltimore (3-4) has lost four straight.

GIANTS 17, RAMS 10: At London, The Giants (4-3) capitalized on four interceptions of Case Keenum in the first NFL game played at London’s home of English rugby, a sold-out and raucous Twickenham Stadium.

Keenum, who finished 32 of 53 for 291 yards and one touchdown, has thrown an interception on the Rams’ final offensive play of the past three games. That likely will fuel debate on a potential quarterback change to overall No. 1 draft pick Jared Goff for the Rams (3-4).

BUCCANEERS 34, 49ERS 17: At Santa Clara, California, Jameis Winston threw three touchdown passes, and Jacquizz Rodgers ran for 154 yards.

The Bucs (3-3) fell behind by 14 points early before scoring 27 straight to deal the Niners (1-6) their sixth straight loss for San Francisco’s longest losing streak since 2008.

Mike Evans caught eight passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns, Russell Shepard scored on a 19-yard pass from Winston, and Peyton Barber iced the game with a 44-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to help Tampa Bay win its second straight game around its bye week.

Colin Kaepernick struggled in his second start of the season for the 49ers, going 16 for 34 for 143 yards and turning the ball over twice after kneeling again for the national anthem.

OT gave San Diego its first road win of the year as the Chargers rallied from a 17-point deficit to beat the Falcons (4-3).

The Chargers (3-4) trailed 27-10 in the second quarter. They had lost 11 of their past 12 road games.

Linebacker Denzel Perryman delivered two key plays late in the game.

Perryman’s interception of Matt Ryan’s pass for Julio Jones set up Lambo’s tying 33-yard field goal with 18 seconds remaining in regulation.

CHIEFS 27, SAINTS 21: At Kansas City, Missouri, Alex Smith threw two touchdown passes in another efficient outing, and Daniel Sorensen returned an interception of Drew Brees for another touchdown.

Spencer Ware ran for 77 yards to go with his 46-yard touchdown reception, and Tyreek Hill made an acrobatic 38yard TD catch to help the Chiefs (4-2) win their ninth straight at home.

Brees got the Saints (2-4) within 2421 with his touchdown pass to Brandon Coleman with 2:33 left, but the ensuing onside kick went out of bounds.

Kansas City added a 41-yard field goal, and the Saints could do nothing in the final 28 seconds. Brees finished with 367 yards and three TD passes.

RAIDERS 33, JAGUARS 16: At Jacksonville, Florida, Latavius Murray scored twice in his return from turf toe, and the Raiders gave coach Jack Del Rio a victory against his former team.

Murray, who missed the past two games, finished with 59 yards on 18 carries. Michael Crabtree caught eight passes for 96 yards and a touchdown from Derek Carr, Sebastian Janikowski kicked four field goals, and the Raiders played the kind of defense

With Truex and Keselowski out of the playoffs before the checkered flag, the suspense came down to final finishing order. Logano was not in a must-win situation, but the victory sure didn’t hurt.

Dillon, on a frantic dash over two overtime laps to gain as many spots as possible, called the outcome “heartbreaking.”

“It sure stinks to lose it on a tiebreaker,” Dillon said.

Also eliminated Sunday was Chase Elliott. Advancing are Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick, Matt Kenseth, Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch, Carl Edwards, Logano and Hamlin.

There are four Toyotas remaining in the field, all from Joe Gibbs Racing.

Stewart-Haas Racing has Kurt Busch and Harvick – but the two had a heated exchange after the race over alleged contact on the last lap – while Hendrick Motorsports has Johnson for three Chevrolets in the field. Logano is the only Ford driver.

Wade, LeBron try to work out World Series wager

After all, city pride doesn’t come cheap.

In one corner, the Chicago-born Dwyane Wade picking up the Cubs flag and waving it proudly. In the other?

Wade’s former teammate from their Miami days, turned icon now that he is back in his hometown of Cleveland in LeBron James.

And of course James is all about the Cleveland Indians, as the two cities are headed for an epic showdown in the

World Series beginning Tuesday.

“No, not yet,” Wade said Sunday when asked about the details of the upcoming wager with James. “We’ll get there though.”

They’re not the only details Wade needs to work out leading up to the Fall Classic. There’s also trying to land some tickets for when the series comes back to Wrigley Field, as Wade is about to find out exactly what kind of pull he has in his homecoming season.

“I’m trying to work my angles,” Wade said.

That included even volunteering himself, Jimmy Butler and Rajon Rondo to handle the seventh-inning stretch

duties that Scottie Pippen “butchered” the other night.

Either way, Wade said he picked a good time to join the Bulls as a free agent.

“Obviously, it’s huge for the city,” Wade said of the Cubs. “It’s been a long, long, long time, and just, obviously, I felt the buzz when I got back to the city, and everyone thinking that this was the Cubs’ year. And they’ve been obviously playing amazing, so it’s great.

“Cleveland has obviously had droughts in sports, and then [James] went back there to change that drought from the standpoint of basketball, and

they accomplished that [with the Cavaliers’ title run].

“They’re two franchises that have been struggling to get to the World Series, and this is what sports is about.

It’s cool.”

Wade wasn’t the only member of the Bulls franchise excited, either. Not exactly the kind of news board chairman Jerry Reinsdorf – who also holds the same position for the crosstown rival White Sox – needs to hear.

“All those Iowa guys, we’re Cubs fans,” coach Fred Hoiberg said.

Hoiberg also was hoping it would be yet another example for his players to follow.

TALLADEGA, Ala. – When an engine failure knocked title favorite Martin Truex Jr. from NASCAR’s playoffs, the rest of the top contenders got a little bit of breathing room.

Then Brad Keselowski suffered the same cruel elimination when his engine failed Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway.

There was suddenly a wide-open competition to earn the final transfer spots into the third round of the Chase, and Denny Hamlin and Austin Dillon raced a tense final two laps in overtime to fill the bracket. With each pushing for every last point, it was Hamlin who advanced into the round of eight on a tiebreaker over Dillon.

Joey Logano won at Talladega Superspeedway, and Hamlin edged Kurt Busch by .006 seconds for third place and the one point he needed to tie Dillon in the standings.

Dillon was ninth, but lost the right to move into the next round based on average finish over the last three races.

Hamlin had told his Joe Gibbs Racing team not to give him points updates, and that lack of knowledge forced him to scramble through the final turn as he was undecided on how aggressive he needed to be.

“I wasn’t sure whether I needed to finish third,” he said. “I told them I didn’t want points updates. But that’s almost when I probably should have got one to figure out what I was going to do. (Dillon) is in the middle

“Feels good to win on a clutch moment like that with the pressure on,” Logano said. “I think we ran like a champ.”

The race was stark difference from the spring stop in Alabama, when 35 cars were involved in at least one accident and two cars went airborne.

And last year, it appeared that Kevin Harvick intentionally caused an accident on an overtime restart to help his championship chances.

But for mile after mile Sunday, the drivers behaved.

The only glitches came in a harried sequence early in the race, in which three championship contenders had uncharacteristic gaffes within minutes of each other.

First, Logano left pit road with a jack wedged under his Ford, and he had to return to pit road to have it removed.

Then, Hamlin was flagged for speeding, and Truex lost an engine.

Keselowski’s engine went with 43 laps remaining after he’d battled climbing temperatures on his car because of debris on his front grille.

“It is unfortunate for Brad,” Logano said. “It happens as a leader picking some (debris up). We picked it up just not as much.”

Keselowski was dominant for a huge chunk of the race, even as he battled climbing temperatures on his Ford.

Then, with 43 laps remaining, his engine blew, and Keselowski was sent to the garage.

Kasey Kahne spun with six laps remaining to bring out the caution for a heart-pounding final restart.

Since 2001, Ready Set Ride has provided therapeutic horse-riding opportunities to children with disabilities.

ing for the Handicapped Association (NARHA) guidelines, Ready Set Ride base sits program on developmental techniques utilizing the horse as a means of mobility for the individual.

Students vary in age and can start as early as 3 years old.

Certified therapeutic riding instructors lead the classes utilizing a variety of games while the students are on horseback. These games incorporate physical, occupational, speech, developmental and recreational therapy. Students are evaluated periodically, and levels of therapy adjusted as needed for consistent improvement.

these are the bones that are most likely to fracture.

People with osteopenia, like you, or with osteoporosis have to exercise carefully. A person should not do exercises that could cause thin bones to fracture.

For example, I tell my patients to protect their spine.

This means avoiding activities and exercises that require you to bend your spine, especially to lift a weight. Bowling is a common example.

I also advise my patients to avoid freeweight exercises and machines that put added stress on the spine. These include some leg-press machines, leg raises performed lying down, and squats done with weight bars resting on the shoulders. A person with thinning spine bones needs to do strength-training exercises that build strong core muscles.

I don’t know your age, but it’s possible that you’re thinking as you read this: “I’m too old to do strength training, to work out with machines and weights and such.” That’s wrong. Supervised weight training in older people builds muscle and bone.

Finally, don’t stop with strength training. Add a few balance exercises to your routine to reduce your risk of falls.

Dear Dr. K: I recently was diagnosed with osteopenia. My doctor advised strength training because it can help slow bone loss. How does it do that?

Dear Reader: Osteopenia is a thinning of the bones. It often is a precursor to osteoporosis, a more severe thinning of the bones. Osteoporosis puts you at risk for disabling, and sometimes debilitating, fractures.

Bones are filled with cells. Some cells build up new bone; other cells tear down old bone.

In most people, those two processes are in good balance. But in some people, particularly as they grow older, more bone gets torn down than built up.

To reverse that imbalance, and the osteopenia that comes from it, you need to stimulate the bone-building process.

Bone, like muscle, follows the “use it or lose it” rule.

One way to “use it” is to exercise.

When you exercise, particularly in strength training, it stimulates the formation of new bone. The tug of the muscles on the bone, and the weight that the bone is being asked to support, signal the bone-building cells to work harder.

Strength-training exercises build muscle by harnessing resistance – that is, an opposing force that muscles must strain against. Resistance can be supplied by your body weight, free weights, elasticized bands or specialized machines. No matter what kind of resistance you use, putting more than the usual amount of load on your muscles makes the bones stronger.

Strength training should target bones of the hips, spine and wrists, as

It might reassure you to discuss this with some of the other secretaries, ask if this is common and whether it bothers them, and let them advise you.

However, declarer knew that East, who couldn’t have a second diamond, had started with 7-5-1-0 distribution. South discarded a diamond.

When he won the trick on the board, he conceded only two trump tricks and claimed for plus 850.
