fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Junior College Board of Trustees met for a retreat meeting Wednesday to discuss leadership, finances and future projects.

During the meeting, held at Syl’s Restaurant in Rockdale, the trustees went over topics such as legal updates, the fiscal 2017 budget and financial projections.

At the outset, Board President Robert Wunderlich said the retreat was an informational meeting with no action taken.

Toward the end of the retreat, President Judy Mitchell proposed that the trustees have one board meeting a month and eliminate workshop meetings.

The proposal would save on time and commitment for trustees, administra-

tive and staff hours, she said.

“I know your time is valuable, and I looked at what the current practices are across the state,” Mitchell said.

Board Vice Chairman Andrew Mihelich said he was not in favor of the proposal.

“I think the workshop meeting is critical, especially for the boards that I’ve been on,” he said.

He said that while some of the meetings the trustees have had lasted two to four hours, the time has been valuable.

Trustee Maureen Broderick asked the administrative staff at the meeting who were in favor of the proposal. They said they support it.

For discussion on finances, Jeff Heap, vice president of administrative affairs, went over updates to the fiscal 2017 budget, including the history of state funding at JJC, as well as tuition

and fees.

He said the college was running slightly under budget on tuition and that revenues are expected to meet what was budgeted regarding property taxes.

During the legal discussion, Carl Buck, the college’s attorney from Rathbun, Cservenyak & Kozol, presented an overview of changes to college board trustee requirements at the state level, the Open Meetings Act and the Freedom of Information Act. Buck said there was a new state mandate for trustees at community college boards to go through mandatory training that would be applicable to some depending on when they were elected.

He recommended that the trustees complete the training, especially because colleges would be required to post on their websites which trustees completed the training.

Disorderly conduct charge filed against man accused of hitting Councilman Hug in late March

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge has been filed against the real estate broker accused of hitting Councilman Larry Hug in a bar.

The charge was filed Oct. 13, six months after the incident that led to the arrest of Mark D. Koenig, 46, of Joliet.

Koenig initially was arrested on a charge of misdemeanor battery one week after the incident. He faces only the disorderly conduct charge now and is scheduled to return to court Nov. 16, according to Will County Circuit Court records.

The Will County State’s Attorney’s Office referred the case to a special prosecutor because a County Board member and county employee were witnesses to the incident.

Another person at the bar that night, Carlos Tinoco of Channahon, told The Herald-News that Hug had made insulting remarks, include the use of a Hispanic racial slur, during the evening.

Hug has denied Tinoco’s account of what happened.

Police reports released to the media have been heavily redacted to take out nearly all comments by witnesses being interviewed during the investigation that led to Koenig’s arrest.

The incident occurred in a beer garden area at the Double J Sports Bar on Essington Road in Joliet.

SKY ZONE COMES TO JOLIET Trampoline park offers a fun and fit form of entertainment

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet is jumping now that Sky Zone has opened.

The trampoline park held a grand opening Wednesday, showing its SkySlam court, Foam Zone pit and other spring-loaded jumping spots to city officials and other visitors.

Sky Zone is a California-based chain of about 150 trampoline parks designed to attract youths and adults with the lure of enhanced jumping.

The Joliet grand opening came at a good time for Kathy Kuttler of Lemont, who brought her 7-year-old son, Karel, and one of his friends to Sky Zone.

“I was looking for something for them to do today,” Kuttler said.

If not for the outing to Sky Zone, she said, the two of them probably would have spent hours looking at a computer screen.

“Recently on play dates, it’s like iPad, iPad, iPad,” Kuttler said. “I want them to play and have exercise.”

Keeping kids fit is part of the Sky Zone experience, said Barbara Glazer, franchise owner of the Joliet location at 2318 Essington Road.

Trump refuses to say whether he will accept results of Nov. 8 election

LAS VEGAS – Threatening to upend a fundamental pillar of American democracy, Donald Trump refused to say Wednesday night that he will accept the results of next month’s election if he loses to Hillary Clinton. The Democratic nominee declared Trump’s resistance “horrifying.”

Trump had spent the days leading up to the third and final presidential debate warning voters that the election would be “rigged.” Asked whether he would accept the outcome if Clinton emerges victorious, he said, “I will tell you at the time. I’ll keep you in suspense.”

The Republican National Committee immediately disavowed Trump’s statement. There is no evidence of widespread voter fraud, and election officials across the country have denied and denounced Trump’s charges.

Trump’s assertions raise the prospect that millions of his supporters may not accept the results on Nov. 8 if he loses, thrusting the nation into uncharted territory.

Wednesday’s contest quickly shifted from a calm, policy-focused faceoff into a bitter and deeply personal confrontation. Trump called Clinton a “nasty woman,” while the Democrat panned him as “unfit” to be commander in chief.

Clinton, who began the debate with a lead in nearly all battleground states, forcefully accused Trump of favoring Russia’s leader over American military and intelligence experts after the Republican nominee pointedly refused to

accept the U.S. government’s assertion that Moscow has sought to meddle in the U.S. election.

She charged that Russian President Vladimir Putin was backing Trump because “he’d rather have a puppet as president of the United States.”

Trump denied any relationship with Putin and said he would condemn any foreign interference in the election. But he notably declined to back the intelligence community’s assessment that Russia was involved in the hacking of Democratic organizations. The Clinton campaign has said the FBI also is investigating Russia’s involvement in the hacking of a top adviser’s emails.

The 90-minute contest in Las Vegas came just about three weeks before Election Day and with early voting underway in more than 30 states. Trump has struggled to expand his support beyond his most loyal backers and must reshape the race in its closing days if he hopes to defeat Clinton.

The candidates clashed repeatedly over their drastically different visions for the nation’s future. Trump backed Supreme Court justices who would overturn the landmark Roe vs. Wade ruling, while Clinton vowed to appoint justices that would uphold the decision legalizing abortion, saying, “We have come too far to have that turned back now.”

The businessman entered the final debate facing a string of sexual assault accusations from women who came forward after he denied in the previous contest that he had kissed or groped women without their consent. That Trump denial followed the release of a

Trump denied the accusations anew Wednesday night, saying the women coming forward “either want fame or her campaign did it.” He falsely said the women’s allegations had been debunked.

Clinton said Trump “thinks belittling women makes him bigger. He goes after their dignity, their self-worth.”

She avoided answering a question about her husband’s infidelities.

Trump pressed Clinton on immigration, accusing her of wanting an “open borders” policy, a characterization she vigorously disputes. The Republican, who has called for building a wall the

length of the U.S.-Mexico border, said that under a Clinton presidency, “People are going to pour into our country.”

Clashing on trade, Trump said Clinton had misrepresented her position on the Trans-Pacific Partnership, noting that she originally had called it the “gold standard” of trade agreements.

Clinton shot back that once the deal was finished, it didn’t meet her standards.

“I’m against it now. I’ll be against after the election. I’ll be against it when I’m president,” she said.

Both were asked if they would consider tax increases or benefit cuts to support Social Security and Medicare programs. Trump said he would cut taxes and repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, but he did not detail any plans for Social Security or other entitlement programs. Clinton said she would put more money in the Social Security trust fund through increasing taxes on the wealthy and other methods and promised not to cut benefits. She also argued that the Affordable Care Act has extended the solvency of Medicare and said she would work to bring costs down.

On foreign policy, Clinton reasserted her opposition to sending a largescale U.S. troop presence to the Middle East to defeat the Islamic State. She’s backed a no-fly zone in Syria, which would mark an expansion of the current U.S. strategy.

For Trump, the debate marked one of his final chances to reshape a race that appears to be slipping away from him. Clinton’s campaign is confidently expanding into traditionally Republican states, while Trump’s narrow electoral path is shrinking.

Dist. 4 hopefuls eye health services, state finances

fsarver@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – Two Will County Board incumbents and a new challenger are running for two District 4 seats.

County Board member Jacqueline Traynere, D-Bolingbrook, and Kenneth Harris, D-Bolingbrook, are vying once again for their seats for District 4. Republican candidate Thomas Gilligan also is running for a seat.

Some of the issues concerning the candidates include county health services, state financial troubles, capital projects and taxes.

Thomas Gilligan

Gilligan, who has served in the U.S. Army and Illinois National Guard, said he is running for District 4 because he wants to make the district a diverse community and ensure that property taxes and cost-of-living expenses are affordable. Thomas “[Diversity] creates Gilligan a great environment of understanding [and] acceptance,” Gilligan said.

If elected, he said, he would work with his peers on the board to keep costs down on projects. He also said he wants to make sure contractors are held accountable.

He said he would work to get rid of pensions for County Board members and reduce redundant services provided by both the county and other government agencies.

Gilligan said local government needs to prepare for changes from the state, and said local agencies will need to come up with solutions to resolve more problems.

He said service is something he enjoys doing, citing his past military experience.

“This position on the County Board is a way I can continue to serve,” Gilligan said.

Harris said he is running for re-election because he wants to continue to be the voice of District 4 and represent it in county matters. He said he has a passion for constituents and wants Kenneth to give back to the com- Harris munity.

One of the main issues that he said he is concerned with is uncertainty with state finances, including how it affects the county health department.

The board voted in May to provide the local agency with financial aid at a time when the state owed the department just more than $2.1 million for work performed under contracts dating back to July 2015.

Harris also said he would like to work with county and other elected officials to help with infrastructure needs as the state undergoes budget issues.

“Right now, the state doesn’t have a budget. We’re approaching almost a year and a half without a budget,” Harris said.

Traynere said she wants to be re-elected because the county has traffic problems, and that she also would like to focus on more progressive issues.

She said that if the board stays in the control of the Republican Jacqueline Party – the board has Traynere 15 Republicans and 11 Democrats – then it may not focus on the latter.

She said one progressive issue for her is more support needed for public and mental health services.

“Anytime you lose health care professionals, there is a corresponding reduction of services in the community,” she said, referring to the state-inflicted troubles at the county health department.

She said she tries to be a voice of the people and also tries to reach out to them through a newsletter that lets them know how their taxes are spent.

Freitag said. “Not temporary jobs, but permanent jobs that bring a median income of at least $30,000 to $40,000.”

As chairwoman of the board’s Capital Improvements Committee, Freitag said she wants to see the ongoing Will County Public Safety Complex and the Will County Judicial ComRagan plex projects through Freitag to fruition, on time and on budget. She hopes to then get the ball rolling on a new Will County Health Department, while preventing tax raises and finding new sources of revenue.

Freitag also wants to continue fighting the heroin epidemic, which she said has affected her both personally and professionally.

VanDuyne said he has maintained

a fiscally responsible voting record while serving as an alderman since 2013 on the Wilmington City Council and that he plans to do the same if elected to the County Board.

He said with the county’s $570 million annual budget, at least $275 million in capital projects planned and many more proposed, he wants to make sure the work is completed without increasing the burden on residents.

“I want to build these buildings, but I don’t want to build them and increase our taxes,” VanDuyne said. “And I’d like to build the necessities, but not the luxuries.”

Joe Gould and Freitag are VanDuyne attorneys; VanDuyne is a maintenance electrician in Joliet. He is a member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 176 and identifies as a Democrat because of how he was raised and his labor background.

But as an elected official, he said he is not concerned with party alignment.

“I’m just a union hardworking man who puts on work boots and is all about fair labor,” VanDuyne said. “Party lines don’t matter. I just want to do the right thing for people in general.”

JOLIET – There are three candidates on the Nov. 8 ballot seeking election to one of two two-year terms to serve Will County Board District 6.

Two of those candidates are currently on the board – Don Gould, R-Shorewood, and Ragan Freitag, R-Wilmington. They have one challenger, Joe VanDuyne, D-Wilmington.

District 6, which encompasses the southwestern end of Will County, includes part or all of Channahon, Minooka, Wilmington and Shorewood. It also includes part or all of the townships of Reed, Custer, Florence, Wilton, Wesley, Jackson, Joliet and Troy.

The most veteran candidate of the three is Gould, who has served on the board since 2002.

If elected to another term, Gould said, first and foremost he will continue fighting to keep the county portion of residents’ taxes down. He said the board has been able to do this the past eight years while other governmental units have increased levies.

Asked if there is anything he thinks the county could have done better since he has been on the board, he referenced something he has been a proponent of for many years. Gould said

he’d like to see the county attract jobs from a variety of industries.

As an example of this, he noted how Google announced last year it was building a data center in rural Alabama and how Allstate opened a data facility in Rochelle, west of DeKalb.

“I’m referring to professional jobs from higher-wage industries,” Gould said. “This would create a greater income for the county and greater discretionary income spending for our residents, which would have a spinoff effect for businesses in Will County.”

Gould said areas north of Will County along Interstate 88 have a large number of technical jobs, while Will County is known for Don freight. Although that Gould is not a bad thing, Gould said, he wants to make sure young people from Will County who go to school for some of these more technical careers actually come back to live and work in the county.

Freitag agreed with Gould, saying they often talk about the issue of having a well-rounded job market.

“We always say, ‘Why can’t we be another Silicon Valley? Why can’t we have more innovative think tanks?’ ”

Homer Glen resident Kyle Killacky is seeking one of two seats now occupied by members Steve Balich, R-Homer Glen, and Mike Fricilone, R-Homer Glen.

Killacky said he wants to focus on infrastructure, heroin addiction issues and attracting business to District 7.

Balich said he wants to continue to represent residents and ensure fiscally responsible government. Fricilone said he wants to make sure county services are efficient and not costly to taxpayers.

“I love my county, I love my town, I love my district. … I think any political office is an important office,” he said.

LWATU has been critical of the district and sued the board last year to prevent the closing of North High

School, which the board approved in August 2015 as part of a plan to reduce budget deficits.

Superintendent Scott Tingley said that while Madonia was approved as a hearing officer – in March 2013, when Wyllie was superintendent, according to board minutes – he never served in that capacity.

Madonia also said he never served as a hearing officer.

Madonia, a former superintendent for Frankfort District 157-C, said that feeder district superintendents typically have relationships with high school officials in regard to curriculum.

He said strategic planning is an initiative that “engages the community and moves forward and talks about the future and planning for excellence.”

Six focus areas of study have been developed as part of the planning process, and Madonia said people will be matched with those areas.

“It’s going to be fair, and it’s going to represent the entire district, not just one community,” Madonia said.

Long-range planning consultant Tingley said Madonia has worked with “schools over all the state” and he has familiarity with District 210.

LWATU also stated that the group has offered to volunteer its services and work with administrators. The group also put together a debt reduction plan offering suggestions to improve the district’s finances and reputation.

Tingley said he read their plan, discussed it with board members and said there were some items in it that would not work.

Lincoln-Way Area Taxpayers Unite issued a news release Tuesday that stated concerns about Robert Madonia, a consultant who is volunteering to work with district officials to develop a strategic long-range plan. “[Madonia] is not a random do-gooder, hoping to simply help the embattled district gain back its footing after being relegated to the [state] financial watch list,” LWATU’s news release stated.

JOLIET – A Homer Glen lawyer convicted of trying to buy his wife’s murder from inside the Will County jail was sentenced Wednesday to 30 years in prison.

Judge Daniel Rozak felt Robert W. Gold-Smith’s “character and attitude [show] he is very likely to commit another crime, and the focal point of that crime would be [ex-wife] Victoria Smith.”

“He blames her for his problems and his present situation,” Rozak said.

The former couple was going through a contentious divorce when Gold-Smith allegedly punched her outside a courtroom in November 2010.

That battery case still is pending, although the former bankruptcy attorney has admitted to the incident while representing himself during other case proceedings.

After Gold-Smith violated an order of protection, he was put in the county jail in March 2011 and offered Brian K. McDaniel $5,000 to kill Victoria Smith in October 2012, according to trial testimony. McDaniel was wearing a wire

for Will County Sheriff’s Office investigators, and Gold-Smith subsequently was charged with solicitation of murder.

Rozak said Wednesday that the opinion he formed during court proceedings conforms with submitted reports from psychologists and psychiatrists.

“He [is] a manifestation of inefficiency, makes an intentional display of contrary behavior ... attempts to undermine everything,” Rozak said. “His imagination is left to run free of constraint, [it] transfers his failures into successes. He is disposed to be touchy and jealous. He may distort and magnify incidental remarks of others into insults.

“Mr. Gold-Smith has gone through a string of attorneys [and] blamed each of them. It’s never his fault, it’s always someone else ... and now when all else fails, it’s the judge’s fault,” Rozak said.

Rozak also denied the contention that Gold-Smith made at an earlier hearing that the judge is anti-Semitic and held his last name against him. A marriage license and birth certificate

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Katrina Bond was diagnosed at 2:35 p.m. Dec. 22, 2015, with stage 1 breast cancer.

It was an awful Christmas gift, she said.

Fortunately, she was able to make a full recovery.

On Wednesday, the Plainfield Post Office held a “Going Pink for Breast Cancer” event as part of the nationwide effort of the U.S. Post Office to raise awareness of breast cancer and funding for research to cure it. The Plainfield Post Office has sold more than $8,000 this month in breast cancer awareness stamps.

Post offices across the nation are decorated similarly with pink this month for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Plainfield’s effort, however, is a little more special and personal to the employees of the location – because of Bond.

A resident of Chicago, Bond has worked at the office since 2010. But after her diagnosis late last year, she missed work for about two months.

She received chemotherapy on Thursdays until May, and it took a lot out of her.

“It was rough,” she said. “Chemo did me really bad.”

She expects to feel chemo’s effects for years to come. Earlier this month, Bond said, she had an episode where it felt like a hammer was hitting her chest. She went to urgent care and has since learned that things like that are to be expected.

“After chemo, everything is different,” she said.

Since finishing chemotherapy in May, she has had two checkups where everything turned out fine. She has another scan scheduled for December.

“And everything will be fine then, to was getting to work. too,” she said with a smile.

“It’s different because it’s indoors,” Justin said. “We go to parks. We go to movies occasionally. But this is something active she can do.”

Jaylyn especially liked the foam pits, which offer soft landings from the trampolines.

Mark Glazer said the reception in Joliet has been very good since Sky Zone opened Oct. 3. It was a soft opening, but the place has been busy. There were 15 birthday parties there last weekend.

The core market is probably between 5 and 18 years old, he said.

Still, there are no age limits.

General Manager Marion Wadkins said she was working at the Aurora Sky Zone on a Friday Glow Zone Night, which includes glow lighting, a disc jockey and dancing. A woman celebrated her 34th birthday there, and her friends were initially disappointed there would be no drinking, Wadkins said. After a while, they changed their minds.

“They finished the birthday party, and they stayed after,” Wadkins said.

“They closed the place down that night.”

Chicago record label pioneer Chess dead The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Chess Records co-founder Phil Chess, who with brother Leonard helped launch the careers of Chuck Berry, Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters and others and amassed a catalog of rock and electric “Chicago” blues that profoundly influenced popular music in the 1950s and beyond, has died. He was 95.

Chess died overnight in Tucson, Arizona, according to his nephew, Craig Glicken, who spoke to the Chicago SunTimes on Wednesday. Leonard, the older brother, died in 1969.

Phil in 1950, Chess Records was home to many of the major blues artists of the following two decades and also took on such musical pioneers as Berry, Etta James and Ike Turner, whose “Rocket 88” is considered one of the earliest rock songs. Chess’ rise helped mark the migration North of such Southern-born blacks as Waters and Wolf and the transition of the blues from acoustic to electric, with hard-hitting arrangements that the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and other white stars openly drew upon.

One of today’s greatest bluesmen, Buddy Guy, credited the label with raising Chicago’s status to the capital of blues.

RIP? Not if you’re a Cubs fan in a playoff year

The Associated Press CHICAGO – If you want to know just how important the Cubs are to Chicago, a good place to start is at the end.

In a city where fans have been known to scatter ashes of the dearly departed at Wrigley Field, families of those who could no longer wait till next season are planting Cubs pennants and flags at the graves of loved ones or sending them off to the great beyond with Cubs hats and jerseys in their caskets.

Resting easy has never been easy for Cubs fans, after all.

Take the family of the late Norman and Florence Sanders. Relatives are making sure they still can do what they did their entire lives: Root for the Cubs.

“One of my daughters went and bought a W flag and about a week ago went to the cemetery and put it there with them,” said Terry Ann Arriaga, whose father died the year the Cubs came within five outs of reaching the World Series back in 2003 and whose mother passed during spring training this year.

since 1908, Chicago is awash in Cubbie blue and red. Children head to school decked out in Cubs gear, and many grown-ups are doing the same at work. “Fly the W” flags are waving from car antennas, porches and museums, while bakeries are topping doughnuts and cookies with the Cubs logo. Death notices with the names of spouses, children and grandchildren now sometimes have a few words about the deceased’s devotion to the lovable losers.

“In lieu of flowers, go to a Cubs game and raise your glass in memory of Mary,” wrote the family of Mary E. Fickenscher after she died in June.

James Apostolopoulos’ family not only wanted to people to know that he’d fought in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II but also cheered for the Cubs. Kenneth Mueller’s family honored his wishes by burying him in a Cubs T-shirt, and his death notice last month asked those attending the wake to try to “wear Cubs’ attire.”

And when Jane Anne Del Carlo Barredo died, the only thing written of a life that began in Illinois in 1930 and ended in May in California was this: “Jane loved Jesus and the Cubs.”

Such a connection might help

explain a suspicion among Cubs Nation that the recently departed are somehow watching the playoffs – and maybe doing more.

“And what do you know, (Javier) Baez hit the home run,” she said.

The team is well-known for breaking the hearts of its long-suffering fans. But the Cubs reached the NLCS last season, too, and raced to the best record in the majors this season, giving fans a fresh jolt of hope and, for Thompson and others, a very real way to ease the grief.

“We just feel like the only way we can get through this emotionally is by saying he is here with us spiritually, enjoying this so much,” Thompson said.

CHICAGO – Officials said hundreds of drinking fountains in Chicago parks have been shut off after testing revealed high levels of lead in the water.

Chicago Park District officials said Tuesday they decided to take 459 of their 2,435 water fixtures out of service based on samples collected during the summer.

The Chicago Tribune reported that consultants found a wide range of lead levels in Chicago parks and Park District facilities, similar to earlier reports from Chicago Public Schools, suburban school districts and schools operated by the Archdiocese of Chicago.

Potential sources include lead pipes and solder or lead in fixtures. Park District officials said they took action when the amount of lead at a particular fountain or sink exceeded the federal Environmental Protection Agency’s action level of 15

The Daily Herald reported that state transportation officials are taking that precaution while they wait for new plows and trucks.

WASHINGTON – Facing new challenges to a legacy law, the Obama administration on Wednesday set modest expectations for the president’s final health care sign-up season. The biggest worry: rising premiums and dwindling choices.

Some 13.8 million people are expected to sign up for 2017 coverage, Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell said. That would be an increase of a bit less than 9 percent from the 12.7 million who picked plans during open enrollment for this year.

This year is shaping up to be the most difficult sign-up season since HealthCare.gov launched in 2013 and the computer system froze up. But technology isn’t the issue this time. Premiums are going up by double digits in many communities, and some major insurers have left the program, leaving consumers with fewer choices next year.

The administration said taxpayer-provided subsidies designed to rise alongside premiums will cushion most of the pocketbook impact. About 85 percent of customers get financial help. And for those policyholders whose insurer bailed out, the government is automatically matching them to another carrier’s plan. It’s up to the consumer whether to accept the match or keep shopping.

Officials said returning customers will notice a smoother, more informative website, making it easier to compare plans. Those who are satisfied with their current plans don’t need to do anything; they’ll be automatically renewed.

Finally, the administration is ramping up outreach, with a particular goal of enticing younger, healthier people to enroll. Expect pitches on social media platforms, email and TV and radio as well as direct mail.

And the IRS will play a supporting role with a not-too-subtle nudge. Later this fall, the tax agency will send letters to people who did not get the minimum coverage required by the health care law. They’ll be reminded that going without insurance risks a fine from the IRS, and the basic penalty is now $695.

Some independent analysts said even a 9 percent sign-up increase will be a heavy lift.

Burwell asserted that the health care law’s insurance markets are strong and offer a product that people want and need. But she also acknowledged “that doesn’t mean the road has been perfectly smooth,” and the markets face “a transition period.”

Burwell criticized Republicans for their unyielding opposition, saying “at nearly every turn, we’ve had to overcome partisan attempts to repeal and undermine the law through legislation and litigation.” She called on Congress to cooperate on proposed fixes, such as a government-sponsored “public op-

Going into its fourth sign-up season, President Barack Obama’s health care law has yet to achieve stability. Enrollment has been lower than initially projected; insurers say patients turned out to be sicker than expected, and a complex internal system to help stabilize premiums did not work as intended, partly because of actions by congressional Republicans.

The law makes carrying health insurance a legal obligation for most people, and prohibits insurers for turning away the sick. It offers subsidized private plans to people who don’t have coverage through their jobs, along with a state option to expand Medicaid for low-income people. Largely as a result, the nation’s uninsured rate has dropped below 9 percent, a historically low level. More than 21 million people have gained coverage since the law passed in 2010.

The 13.8 million enrollment goal announced Wednesday actually represents an annual high-water mark. The initial sign-up number typically gets winnowed down by dropouts and people who find other coverage.

For example, the initial number reached 12.7 million this year. But HHS said Wednesday that enrollment averaged 10.4 million people through the end of June, which works out to attrition of about 18 percent.

The administration is hoping for a strong sign-up season to validate the president’s signature program, and for a victory by Democrat Hillary Clinton in the presidential election to shut down the Republican campaign for its repeal. Clinton has outlined steps she’d take to build enrollment and sweeten subsidies for consumers.

Such is life as a small business owner.

For the Hayses – who opened Barb City Bagels in December 2014 after careers in education – being the owners of a small business isn’t about amassing great wealth. It has become a way to help their children go to college their sons, Benjamin, 21, and twins Aaron and Jacob, 19, are attending Moody Bible College in Chicago and are looking to join the ministry.

“A friend of mine who owns a business in another town, she always likes to say when people buy at a small business, you’re not only buying a product,” said Bobbi Hays, who lives in Cortland. “You’re helping to pay somebody to let their kid have dance lessons, or to be able to get the extra speech therapy they might need if their child has speech issues, or allow them to send their kid to college.

“It’s not just buying a product.

I’m helping people be able to make a better life.”

Five years ago, Labadi opened The Huddle in DeKalb, a burger restaurant in a space tucked into the back of a strip of stores, and said he’s just now breaking even. A bright-green bumper sticker next to the front door reads, “Support Your Local Economy.”

Labadi graduated from Northern Illinois University with a degree in electrical engineering, before realizing a long-held dream of opening a restaurant, which he said began when he worked at a restaurant during college.

“It inspires you when you see locals doing well and creating jobs, and their business is prospering,” said Labadi, who lives in Cortland. “We want to do that. We want to do it. If we work together, we can create a great amount of resources, with NIU and the students that are looking for internships and have ideas. We have people in DeKalb with the means to do something with those ideas.”

While some businesses start from scratch, Binkowski bought a previously established local gym and eventually got a new location and a new name - FitWorkz.

Binkowski jokes that he spent five years pestering Paul Wright to sell him the Wright Athletic Club, before he finally got his wish in 2007. While studying mechanical engineering at Northern Illinois in the 1990s, Binkowski caught the fitness bug and lost more than 50 pounds. He sold his stake in a mechanical engineering company for the chance to own FitWorkz.

FitWorkz has been operating in DeKalb since 1978, changing hands and locations before settling on Binkowski’s shoulders. He admits that taking over an established enterprise has its benefits - people know the brand - but it also puts pressure on the new owners to not be the ones who run it into the ground.

“With small business, every day there’s always that question: Am I going to be able to make it today? This month? This year?” said Binkowski, who lives in Sycamore and has written three health-related books, including “Eat By Color.”

“But at the same time, I think most small businesses owners just decide failure is not an option. It’s just the

way it is. I’m going to find a way to innovate and be resourceful enough to resolve any problem.”

Some small businesses realize that they must adapt to the technological age. Binkowski recently announced his gym will begin to operate 24 hours, and he’s created online workouts for clients who don’t live in the area. The Hayses use an iPad to process pointof-sale transactions and provide free Wi-Fi to attract college-aged clientele - a customer segment they said has

grown almost 20 percent.

Labadi said his location close to campus is both a strength and a weakness. When NIU is in session, business is good. But in the summer, things slow down.

“It would have been much cheaper for me to close the business in the summer - much cheaper,” Labadi said. “I’d say it would be about 30 percent of what I lose, but I don’t want to do that for the sake of my employees that are here full-time or part-time and for the sake of the regular customers. You have to plan accordingly when you look at the whole year.”

At Barb City Bagels, they bake between 400 and 800 bagels a day, donating to leftovers to First Baptist Church of Sycamore. While the company helps the community by giving the leftover bagels, Bobbi Hays said, the reliance on the community helps keep Barb City Bagels in business.

“If we all decided to help each other just a little bit more, maybe we’d need a little bit less of Uncle Sam,” she said.

“Life is crazy and busy, and cities are big, but there’s something to be said for neighbor helping neighbor.”

Oswego East boys soccer edges Lockport in regional semifinal

cherron@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Things went pretty much as both sides expected when the boys soccer teams from Lockport and Oswego East met in Wednesday’s Class 3A Lockport Regional semifinal.

The Porters and Wolves anticipated a hard-fought match where chances would be limited and one goal might prove to be the difference.

East made the most of an opportunity that came its way in the 46th minute, and that goal turned out to be the

only one of the match, as it claimed a 1-0 victory over Lockport to advance to Friday’s 4 p.m. championship against Waubonsie Valley.

Ford Frazer sent a pass to Manuel Magana, who got past a defender and then fired in a liner that helped the Wolves (14-6-2) equal the school record for wins in a season, while handing the Porters (11-5-3) their first home setback this year.

“We couldn’t finish our chances,” Porters coach Chris Beal said. “We decided to defend low pressure and tried to hit them on the counterattack. They

put us under some pressure in the first half and we weathered the storm a little bit and we kind of evened off in the second half. The game got a little more stretched as both teams got tired.

“But they had that one chance where their forward finished. We had chances but just couldn’t put the ball in the net. But that’s how games are won and lost, especially in the playoffs and it’s frustrating. Either team could have won it. Our goalkeeper (Dominik Wistocki) had three or four fantastic saves and kept us in it. The guys scrapped hard but we just didn’t have

that little bit of quality at the end.”

The Porters had some good opportunities to get the equalizer but Wolves keeper Nathan Huerter made some big stops and his defense also disrupted scoring tries.

Shortly after the Wolves moved in front, Lockport’s Drake Silver had a free kick that was deflected away.

A bit later, Nick Kowalczyk fired a hard shot and Jose Mendoza tried to put in the rebound but he too was denied.

QBs hold key for area playoff teams Even in this era of the spread offense and all its variations, the secrets to winning high school football games continues to include running the ball and stopping the run.

If you run the ball successfully, you control the clock and keep the opponent’s offense on the sideline. You occasionally also may hit a home run – a long run for a touchdown or to set up a score.

If you stop the opponent from running the ball, you tend to get the ball back quickly for your offense to do its thing.

Having said all of that, the play of the quarterbacks for our area teams will be huge in determining whether we have much success in the upcoming playoffs. Against quality defenses, the quarterbacks must make good decisions, avoid turnovers, be able to scramble and be accurate with their

We are not overrun with Division I quarterbacks in the area this season, but we do have a group that has done the job in leading their teams to the playoffs.

Review the statistics chart adjacent to this column, and you will notice good passing seasons being built by Joliet West’s Jaxon Aubry, Lemont’s Spencer Nagel, Lincoln-Way East’s Jake Arthur, Lockport’s Ben Davis, Plainfield North’s Brady Miller and Lincoln-Way Central’s Hunter Campbell. It is no accident their teams are playoff-bound.

In fact, the outcome of a couple of

the key Week 9 matchups in the area could come down to the play of the quarterbacks.

Joliet West (6-2) will visit Plainfield North (6-2) on Friday night. Aubry, only a sophomore, has been solid all season and leads the area in pass attempts, completions and yardage.

Miller, a three-sport athlete, has come on strong in the second half of the season. He is completing 59 percent of his throws for 15 touchdowns.

Then there’s the Lockport (6-2) at Lincoln-Way East (6-2) battle. The Porters were without Ben Davis last week because of an illness. Davis has thrown for 1,138 yards in seven games. If he is unable to go Friday, a combination of standout wide receiver Patrick Cooper and sophomore Jacob Karli likely will fill in.

1. Lemont (8-0): The Indians, in the No. 1 spot in the rankings for the first time, should put the finishing touches on an unbeaten regular season and one of the highest playoff seeds, whether in Class 6A or Class 5A, when they take on winless T.F. North on Friday night.

On the other side of the ball, the Porters’ defense must deal with Arthur. He is completing passes at an area-best .697 clip and has thrown for 1,217 yards and 14 touchdowns. That works out to a touchdown every nine pass attempts.

A quarterback with numbers similar to Arthur’s is Lemont’s Nagel, who sports a .642 completion percentage with 1,311 yards and 17 touchdowns, roughly one score every eight pass attempts. There are myriad reasons the Indians (8-0) should enter the postseason unbeaten, but Nagel certainly has done his part.

Lincoln-Way Central (6-2) will face nonconference foe Metea Valley in its final regular-season game. Knights quarterback Campbell does not throw as often as some others in the area, but he is completing passes at a .563 clip and has thrown for 877 yards. Central probably would not

Minooka is not heading to the playoffs, but production from its passing game has not been lacking. John Carnagio played through the middle of the season before being hurt and has thrown for 1,343 yards.

Zach Gessner has stepped in and thrown for 821, so that’s 2,164 yards between them, an area-leading 270.5 per game. So South’s strong defense will be tested.

An area team that needs to win to reach the playoffs is Bolingbrook (4-4), which is at Homewood-Flossmoor (9-0). Anthony Vespo has a .588 completion percentage and has throw for 1,192 yards. A huge game from him is a must if the Raiders are to pull off the shocker for a second straight year. They beat unbeaten H-F, 22-21, in Week 9 last season to qualify for the playoffs.

3. Peotone (4-4): The Blue Devils suffered a tough 10-6 loss to Coal City last week and now must beat 8-0 Herscher in order to make the playoffs. Chandler Gartner has averaged 25.6 carries and 153.9 yards a game.

In the 62nd minute, Kowalczyk drove toward the net but he was stopped by Huerter. That was one of the last good chances by the Porters until late in the match. As time wound down East had several good chances, but Wistocki halted a free kick from Kyle Orive and deflected a try by Magana over the net after a corner kick.

In addition, the Porters keeper pulled in a liner from Frazer, disrupted Michael Waclaw’s drive to the net and stopped a grounder from Ryan Aten prior to a hectic 80th minute.

Tom Calderaro began the late drama for the Porters when he created a corner kick, which was taken by Silver. The effort went into the box and Ainis Lapinskas got a head on the ball.

The Wolves could have been called for a hand ball in the box and a penalty awarded to the hosts, but the referee made no call and time expired.

“It’s the playoffs, so you know that both teams were going to go hard no matter what,” Calderaro said. “Every team knows that one mistake can cost you everything and the seniors always play hard since they know it could be their last time on the field. It usually comes down to one or two chances and our goalkeeper, Dom, came up huge on a few chances and made some great saves. We just weren’t able to capitalize on a couple of chances we had.

The Spartans (13-6-2) advance to the regional championship game at 5 p.m. Saturday against Neuqua Valley, which edged Aurora East, 1-0, in overtime in the other semifinal.

Romeoville got goals in the first 21 minutes from David Cahue and Anthony Duarte. With 34 minutes left in the game, Duarte scored his second goal off a header, assisted by Leondro Deagueros.

Rose cleared in rape lawsuit

The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – NBA star Derrick Rose and two friends were cleared Wednesday in a $21.5 million lawsuit that accused them of gang raping his ex-girlfriend when she was incapacitated from drugs or alcohol.

Jurors in Los Angeles federal court reached the verdict in less than four hours after concluding there was a lack of evidence to support the woman’s claims and dismissing her account as unbelievable.

“It felt like she was playing us,” said a juror who would only give his first name as Jared. “The second her lawyer started questioning her, she would start crying. I mean, granted, that could be realistic, but I feel l’m pretty good at reading people, and I felt as if it was false.”

Jared was among several jurors who spoke to reporters outside the courthouse, none of whom gave their full names.

Rose remained stoic as the verdict was read and later thanked jurors and

posed for photos with them in the lobby, draping his left arm around each one who wanted a souvenir of the Knicks point guard as one of his lawyers snapped photos on their phones.

“I am thankful that the jury understood and agreed with me,” Rose said in a statement. “This experience and my sensitivity to it was deep. I am ready to put this behind me and focus on my family and career.”

The case was X-rated at times with testimony from the men about poolside group sex at a mansion Rose rented in Beverly Hills in the summer of 2013 and multiple sexual encounters throughout the night and into the next morning.

The woman denied having sex at Rose’s place, saying she had a few tequila shots and felt drugged before going home. Her lawyer said the defense invented the story to make it look like she had willingly had sex with the men.

The incident in question happened hours later in the early morning of Aug. 27 when she said the three men came to her Los Angeles apartment and had sex with her after she had passed out.

On Merritt: Indians go to World Series, top Toronto in the ALCS

The Associated Press TORONTO – For the Cleveland Indians, the script was the same every game – hope for the best from whoever they started, then count on Andrew Miller and the bullpen to close it out.

That plan seemed especially dicey in Game 5 of the AL Championship Series, with lightly used Ryan Merritt on the mound. But out of nowhere, the rookie delivered.

Merritt coolly kept the Indians ahead until reinforcements arrived, and Cleveland earned its first trip to the World Series since 1997 by blanking the Toronto Blue Jays, 3-0, Wednesday.

The 24-year-old lefty defied expectations, shutting down the powerful Blue Jays before exiting in the fifth inning.

Thanks to a most unlikely pitching performance, a most unexpected team won the ALCS, 4-1.

Cleveland, which has never hosted a World Series opener, will play Game 1 at Progressive Field on Tuesday night against the Cubs or Los Angeles Dodgers. Cleveland didn’t play either club this season.

Manager Terry Francona’s team

will try to augment what’s already been a scintillating year in Cleveland after LeBron James and the Cavaliers earned the city’s first major pro sports championship since 1964.

The Indians’ title drought dates to 1948. In 1997, they let a one-run lead get away in the bottom of the ninth inning in Game 7 and lost to the Florida Marlins in the 11th.

“We always said if we could do it with this group it would be so special because this is as close to a family feel as you can get in a professional setting.

So for that part of it, it is beyond feeling good,” Francona said.

Miller, acquired from the New York Yankees in a midseason trade, was selected the ALCS MVP as the Indians took their sixth pennant.

“I feel like I’ve said the word ‘special’ a million times in the last 20 or 30 minutes. But it’s the truth. It’s a blast to be a part of,” Miller said.

With all of 11 major league innings under his belt – and only one start, on Sept. 30 – Merritt took the mound and looked just like a seasoned vet . The lefty retired the first 10 batters and allowed a mere two hits before being pulled after 41/3 innings.

Bears look for points, Packers Auto Dealer looking for a running back

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The outlook for Knile Davis’ season changed with a late-night phone call.

On Tuesday, the running back was buried on the Kansas City Chiefs’ depth chart.

By Thursday night, Davis could be a very important player in the backfield for the Green Bay Packers when they host the Bears in the 193rd meeting of the NFL’s oldest rivalry.

Injuries have hit the running back position for Green Bay, a troubling development for an offense that also is struggling to get consistency from the Aaron Rodgers-led passing attack.

Enter Davis, a fourth-stringer with Kansas City who found out late Monday night that he had been dealt to the Packers for a conditional draft pick.

Soon enough, Davis could be taking handoffs from Rodgers.

“He can get the ball out, and then you know we’ve got to run the ball to keep them off of him. So it’s a good balance,” Davis said.

It is how it’s supposed to work when the Packers (3-2) are clicking. The past two games, though, hard-charging back Eddie Lacy and the rushing attack have showed more consistency than the passing game.

But Lacy has a left ankle injury.

Backup James Starks has already been ruled out with a knee injury.

“We all have a part in it, and we’ve all got to improve individually so collectively we can get back on the right track and start playing a little bit more consistently,” Rodgers said.

By yardage alone, the Bears’ offense is humming compared to the Packers.

They’re seventh in total offense (375.2 yards a game) and fourth in passing (284.2 yards), with Brian Hoyer having started the past four games with Jay Cutler sidelined by a thumb injury.

But the yardage hasn’t led to a lot of points. The Bears (1-5) are among the lowest in the league in scoring at 16.8 points a game.

This might be the game in which the Bears can take chances deep to open up the offense, especially with Green Bay riddled with injuries at cornerback.

Hoyer plans to take his chances, as long as they’re not too risky.

“So even as frustrated as we are, trying to score touchdowns in the red area, you still don’t want to take points off the board,” Hoyer said.

Other notes and things to watch on Thursday night:

Familiar foes: The Bears-Packers rivalry goes back to 1921, with the Bears holding a 94-92-6 edge in the series. The teams last played on a rainswept Thanksgiving night last year, when the Bears won 17-13 to spoil a game that marked the return of former Packers quarterback Brett Favre to Lambeau Field.

Bears down: The Bears are in danger of falling to 1-6 for the first time since 2000. Whether it’s because of a long line of injuries or simple breakdowns, the Bears appear to have taken a step backward in coach John Fox’s second season. The past two weeks have been particularly rough.

The Bears lost to Indianapolis on a late touchdown pass from Andrew Luck to T.Y. Hilton. Against Jacksonville last week, they led by 13 going into the fourth quarter, only to lose 1716 on a 51-yard touchdown from Blake Bortles to Arrelious Benn in the closing minutes.

Corner concern: Pass coverage is an issue for the Packers with so many injuries in the secondary. Their best cornerback, Sam Shields, was placed on injured reserve this week with a concussion to make room for Davis.

Quinten Rollins said he will miss his second straight game with a groin injury. Damarious Randall also has a groin injury, and he appears unlikely to play after leaving Sunday’s loss to Dallas.

That leaves LaDarius Gunter, who had a poor game last week against the Cowboys, and Demetri Goodson as the likely starting cornerbacks.

Air Bears: Hoyer has a franchise-record four straight 300-yard passing games filling in for Cutler. He also has thrown 189 passes this season without an interception.

But the Bears are 25th in the league in red zone offense, having converted just 47 percent.

“We’ve got to be better. We’ve got to execute better,” offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains said. “I’ve got to call better plays and we’ve got to coach it better. In the NFL, the games are so close, you can’t have that point change.”

Run time: Davis was studying the Packers’ playbook to try to get ready for Thursday. The fourth-year back’s best season was 2014, when he ran for 463 yards and six touchdowns on 134 carries. Green Bay also is likely to activate rookie Don Jackson, who ran for more than 2,300 yards in his college career at Nevada, from the practice squad.

Rapping from his heart

Milton Calvin’s original music is praise and ministry Know more

JOLIET – Christian rapper Milton Calvin, 25, of Joliet, has depended on God his entire life.

Calvin can’t wait to share those details – in speech and in song – on Oct. 27 to the kids attending The Center in New Lenox.

The youngest of five children, Calvin grew up on the streets of Chicago with his mother and siblings. They slept on benches when the shelters were full, Calvin said. Calvin was 6 when his father went to prison for burglary, but that wasn’t the cause of their situation.

“We were homeless before that,” Calvin said.

He recalled sitting in the lobby of a public assistance building, writing poems on scraps of paper and selling them for a quarter apiece to passersby. Calvin said he was 8 at the time.

“Ever since then I always wrote,” Calvin said. “And I always wrote from my heart.

At age 11, Calvin moved into his first home, an apartment in Aurora.

He’s uncertain how circumstances changed.

“I guess my mom got a job or something,” Calvin said. “I just remember riding on a bus and she said, ‘Do you want to see our new place?’

It was just a blessing that God gave my mom to be able to provide for us.”

Three years later, Calvin was introduced to Christian rap through an Aurora church’s weekly youth group. Yet it wasn’t the church that introduced Calvin to Christ. It was Calvin’s mother.

“My mother taught us how to pray,” Calvin said. “She taught us that Jesus was there no matter what, she taught us to keep the faith. These things stayed with me throughout the hardest time of my life.”

During Calvin’s high school years, he practiced, recorded and performed original rap music about life and God’s goodness, all through the Aurora church, he said.

By 2009, Calvin was participating in a cement training program at Joliet Job Corps, with plans to study business at Joliet Junior College and rapping wherever doors opened for him, according to a 2009 Herald-News story.

Calvin eventually settled into a $13 an hour job packing bacon for a warehouse in Montgomery, but his heart was in rapping. He recently let the job go.

“If I focus my energy on my dream, one day I won’t have to live check to check. I’ll be doing something I love and providing for my family,” he said.

Calvin said he has a 5-year-old son, who lives with the son’s mother. He is currently homeless again, although his demeanor doesn’t show it.

“A lot of people ask me, ‘How do you keep smiling through the hard times?’ ” Calvin said. “Well, I know if

After the CYC building was sold in 2013, Abbott said, The Center temporarily met at Ridgewood Baptist Church in Joliet before finding a home at The Hub in New Lenox.

The Hub is closing at the end of 2016, which could leave The Center – and the 40-plus teens and college students it serves – without a gathering place unless a new location is quickly found, Abbott said.

Joliet’s West Side would be ideal because it would be a central spot for the youth, which come from Plainfield, Channahon, Minooka and Lockport, as well as Joliet, Abbott said.

“We need 6,000 to 15,000 square feet of commercial space with an open floor plan and high ceilings, as move-in ready as possible,” Abbott said.

The Center’s last meeting at The Hub is Dec. 31, Abbott said.

But Calvin’s passion for rapping goes beyond money. He said he raps in bars, subways and on the streets, anywhere he finds “listening ears.”

Nor does he “water anything down.”

To Calvin, rapping is more than making Christian music.

“It’s my praise,” Calvin said. “It’s my thanks to God. I want to express in my music the things he brought me from, why I believe in him, why I love him. My music is life and there is life in my music. I don’t force God on anyone. I write about the ups and the downs in life so that when people ask me how I made it as far as I’ve made it, I’ll be able to tell them, ‘I kept my faith in God.’ ”

NEW LENOX – It’s not looking a lot like Christmas yet.

But it’s not too early to be an angel.

Through Oct. 31, United Methodist Church of New Lenox is collecting new toys, books and children’s winter clothing for kids of all ages – including teens – who are residents at the Cookson Hills Mission in Cookson, Oklahoma.

The donations will become merchandise, which low-income families will purchase as Christmas gifts, said Jim Danzl, project coordinator for United Methodist. Danzl said he and another church member will deliver the donations to the mission during the first week of November.

“We’ll spend a day setting up their Christmas store,” Danzl said.

The Cookson Hills Mission Christmas store is located on the main floor of a two-story single-family home that was converted into a dormitory for mission workers, Danzl said. The top floor contains dormitory-style bedrooms.

The main floor has a kitchen, a bathroom, and dining and living rooms, Danzl said. Some of the rooms become the Christmas store during the holiday season.

Cookson Hills parents and grandparents may select items from the store for their children and grandchildren.

They pay a small fee based on their in-

come, Danzl said. About 1,200 to 1,400 people visit the store during the holidays, Danzl said.

“It keeps their self-worth, being able to buy the presents,” he said.

Likewise, children may also purchase gifts for their parents and grandparents.

The Cookson Hills region in eastern Oklahoma is the second poorest region in the United States. Its average annual income is $2,000, Danzl said. It’s the area to which the Cherokees were relocated, but it’s not a reservation, and a diverse group of people live in Cookson Hills, he said.

“The mission is set up to serve everybody,” Danzl said The church typically sends volunteers to the mission twice a year, he said. The trip in November will be Danzl’s eighth.

A 10-member work team typically goes to Cookson Hills in the first week of May, Danzl said. Danzl coordinates both trips.

New Lenox United Methodist Church became involved with the Cookson Hills Mission about five years ago, Danzl said.

BOLINGBROOK – Brooks Middle School’s Kathy O’Dwyer will receive the St. Clare of Assisi Award at the third annual Franciscan Works Children of Hope benefit at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Ukrainian Cultural Center in Chicago.

O’Dwyer is being recognized for “her continuous effort in helping Franciscan Works and Liberia Mission flourish.”

Franciscan Works is an organization dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty around the world.

The sixth-grade social studies teacher first traveled to war-torn Liberia, West Africa in the summer of 2011, spending time working with the children and staff at St. Michael the Archangel School, which is run by Franciscan Works. She has returned to the school every year since that time.

Proceeds from Saturday’s event will support the education of the students O’Dwyer works with in Liberia. Features of the event include dinner and live music.

Physicians needed include the following: general, plastic, ENT, orthopedic and pediatric surgeons. Also needed are anesthesiologists (MDs or CRNAs) as well as operating room nurses and recovery room nurses.

Staff nurses, preferably Spanish speaking, to teach post-op care are being sought.

Pediatricians, pediatric nurse practitioners, family practitioners, internists, ER doctors and dentists are needed. Also needed are donations of surgical supplies.

We also are looking for men and women to assist local people in building homes and work in outreach programs for the poor. No special construction skills are necessary.

Frozen shoulder resolves on its own Dear Dr. K: What exactly is a frozen shoulder, and can I do anything to speed up the healing process?

Dear Reader: Everyday, temporary shoulder aches and stiffness are common. Frozen shoulder is different. The shoulder starts to ache, particularly when you move it. Lifting a pan from the stovetop, brushing your hair, scratching your back – they all hurt.

So you move your shoulder less. The pain and mobility become substantially worse over time. The condition usually affects just one shoulder.

Pain and loss of mobility of a shoulder can be caused by other conditions, too.

Arthritis of the shoulder or an infection in the shoulder joint, for example, can cause similar symptoms.

What is frozen shoulder? The bones, ligaments and tendons that make up your shoulder joint are wrapped in a capsule of connective tissue. Frozen shoulder occurs when this capsule thickens and becomes inflamed.

The inflammation and thickening of the shoulder capsule often results from shoulder injury or surgery. A common type of shoulder injury that can lead to frozen shoulder is a tear in the rotator cuff.

Your risk also increases if you have any of several other underlying medical conditions. Examples include diabetes, various autoimmune diseases or conditions that cause you to use the shoulder less, such as a stroke or Parkinson’s disease.

The trademark symptoms include pain and worsening stiffness. At first, the shoulder is painful, but range of motion is still good. As the condition progresses, range of motion begins to decrease. By the time the shoulder eventually becomes “frozen,” much of the pain has resolved, but you have difficulty moving your shoulder at all.

The entire cycle from early symptoms to recovery can last from nine months to two years.

Frozen shoulder has three stages: freezing, frozen and thawing. Here are some things you can do at each stage to move your recovery along, or at least ease discomfort.

• Freezing. This is the slow, gradual buildup of pain and stiffness. Over time, you notice the shoulder losing more of its range of motion as the capsule becomes thicker.

During this period, the inflamed shoulder can be quite painful. Occasional steroid injections can help ease the discomfort, but may not speed recovery. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Advil), also can help.

• Frozen. The pain begins to lessen, but your range of motion is the most limited. It is still hard to lift your arm overhead. And you often have difficulty with everyday movements, such as dressing or reaching into your back pocket. In some cases, arthroscopic surgery may help loosen the joint capsule so it can move more freely.

• Thawing. Stiffness goes away as the shoulder begins to heal. This is when you begin stretching exercises and formal therapy to help restore flexibility and range of motion.

Dear Abby: I DEAR ABBY was “ghosted” by a woman I Jeanne had been in a Phillips long-distance relationship with.

It lasted four years until one day she just never responded again.

We are both parents, both 30, so it’s hard for me to understand how someone could do this to a person you’ve had a history with and claim to love. It seems like a child’s reaction. I’m finding it hard to move past this, because I have no idea what happened.

I feel blindsided. Could she have been hurt or died? I have no one to contact and no way to know. My question is, how does one go about moving past this, since it wasn’t a typical breakup? – Can’t Go Forward Dear Can’t Go: What the person did was cowardly, but I’m sorry to say it isn’t that unusual these days. What is unusual is during the four years you were in a relationship, you never met any of her friends or family, and have no idea how to contact her. Are you absolutely sure she is who she claimed to be and not a catfisher?

I agree for someone to do what she did was childish. It also was brutal, and you might need counseling to help you get over it and learn to trust again.

Dear Abby: My question might seem odd, but your advice would be appreciated.

I have family who live in another city and have a medium-sized active dog. I have invited them to visit me in my newly built home, which has soft pine floors throughout. I mentioned to them I would like to supply dog booties when they visit so their dog’s claws would not scratch my brand-new floors.

I have tried inviting them numerous times over the past two years, but they always have an excuse why they can’t visit. Another family member told me a comment was made, “If we have to put booties on our dog and they want a showcase home, then it will be empty of us.”

A considerate guest either would comply or leave the dog at home. If they prefer not to accept your invitation, let them.
