mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – John Severson was unanimously appointed on Monday by Morris City Council as the city’s new police chief.

Severson fills the role after longtime Chief Brent Dite announced his retirement in February to begin teaching in August at the Grundy Area Vocational Center. Monday was Dite’s last official day as chief.

Mayor Richard Kopczick appointed Severson to the position, which passed with 7-0 vote. Alderman Bill Martin was absent.

An audience full of Severson’s family and co-workers were in attendance, and gave him a round of applause after the appointment.

“It’s humbling, and kind of surreal to receive this much support,” Severson said to the crowd and council. “I truly am honored.”

Severson was hired as a part-time dispatcher with the Morris Police Department in November 1991 and became a fulltime dispatcher by 1993. In 1995 he was a full-time patrol officer.

Severson’s career path took him from patrolman to detective, to corporal, back to patrolman before being named sergeant in 2005 and deputy chief in 2013.

New Morris police chief But he never really planned on being a police chief. He explained Monday after the appointment that he was apprehensive initially to pursue the position because both he and his family know that when you advance in law enforcement, you generally have more duties, more stress and more responsibilities.

Kopczick said he told Severson to think about it, talk it over with the family and pray on it. Severson said his family reassured him they wanted him to “go for it.”

Dite said Severson has worked his way up the department ladder and is a man of integrity that he feels will do a great job in the position.

“John is a great family man who has come up through the ranks and held just about every job in the department there is,” Dite said. “His integrity and work ethic are second to none.”

Severson, who has been preparing for the transition by accepting more duties in recent months, said one of his first order of business is to keep the ship headed in

the right direction.

“Chief Dite left me a wonderful department,” Severson said, adding he wants to maintain the positive attitude and provide the best tools for the department to do its job.

More graffiti found in Joliet subdivision

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Police are stepping up patrols in Old Renwick Trail in an attempt to stop racist graffiti that appeared again Monday.

Graffiti, much of it racist, has appeared in the subdivision on five occasions since early August.

At noon Monday, more of it was found on a dock along the retention pond in the subdivision, Police Chief Brian Benton said.

“We photographed it,” Benton said.

“We’re going to increase our patrols over there.”

graffiti, apparently motivating a new message that appeared in the graffiti discovered Monday: “Keep erasing this.”

An incident in early August prompted Mayor Bob O’Dekirk and council members to denounce the racist messages at a City Council meeting at the time.

The situation appeared to be under control until a new outbreak of graffiti that started in early October. There have been four incidents this month, including graffiti on one residence and on the Interstate 55 sound wall that faces the subdivision.

Old Renwick Trail residents have revitalized a Neighborhood Watch group in an attempt to catch whoever is doing the graffiti.

“I do think that the citizens out there are more concerned and are taking an active role to help us,” Benton said.

Employers looking for help, but some older workers feel they’re not wanted

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A job fair Monday at American Legion Post 1080 offered a look at who’s seeking work and who needs workers.

The dual job fair was designed in part for veterans and in part for the public. Many of those attending were older workers saying they hoped to break through what they saw as age discrimination in the job market.

“What was helpful was a ray of hope. I didn’t get a lot of no, no, nos,” said Andrew Watson of Joliet.

Watson is a truck driver and Army veteran looking for a line of work that would allow him more mobility. Sitting in a truck on long hauls is hard on his legs due to a spinal injury, and Watson would like to do something different. But he thinks employers are wary of his health and age.

“Usually, once they see that stick and that limp, they kind of shy off a bit,” Watson said. “I don’t feel disabled.

I just turned 56. I think I have seven or eight more years of work in me.”

The 35 employers at the job fair included some who needed to fill openings. Attendance was light in the first two hours.

Help wanted

Xerox Corp. is adding 50 people to the existing staff of 300 at its customer call center in Bolingbrook.

“We’re starting a training class each week,” operations manager Brandon Cobb said.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office came to Joliet looking to fill openings for correctional officers. And Turano Baking Co. in Berwyn was looking for full-time production and packaging workers.

Even the State of Illinois, despite its budget problems, was there.

The state does have job openings, said Carlos Charneco, manager of the Diversity Enrichment Program for the Department of Central Management Services.

“You have to keep institutions running,” Charneco said. “The Department of Corrections is probably going to hire 300 people. The Department of Children and Family Services is hiring investigators.”

Charneco listed other departments hiring, too, and said the state does have a veterans preference hiring program.

Jeremy Spencer of Manteno, who served in the Air Force from 2008 to 2012, got a warehouse job while mingling as he worked the event as a volunteer.

“I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t come here looking for a job,” said Spencer, who was hired to work at an XPO Logistics warehouse within walking distance of his home.

Many of the job seekers Monday,

however, were looking for employers willing to hire older workers.

Cathy Berkos is facing the expiration of a COBRA plan and is looking to return to nursing.

“I’m not eligible for Medicare for another three years,” said Berkos, who lives in Plainfield Township.

Berkos’ husband, Terrence Berkos, an Army veteran, died in January.

Berkos said she believes she has encountered age discrimination in her job search this year, but also got what seemed to be a good lead on a nursing job Monday.

Joliet school kicks off anti-bullying campaign

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Author Brandye Phillips called on a special guest to appear in front of a crowd of students at Taft Elementary School.

The guest was Charlie, a chicken who is the main character in Phillips’ children’s book, “Don’t Be A Bully.”

Phillips, a Joliet native, came to Taft on Monday with Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White to kick off an anti-bullying campaign at Joliet Public Schools District 86. Schools within the district have held past events and programs focused on bullying.

Charlie appeared as a small puppet on top of a podium with a picture of White adorned with flowers. White had been praised earlier by Phillips and students for his work in education, and given a lifetime achievement award.

“We’ve heard that you were bullied at school,” Phillips said to Charlie.

He answered with squawks.

“Wow, was it that bad?” she said.

She told Charlie she was going to read about his story of being bullied and how he overcame it. At the end of the tale, the students learned several tips on how to deal with bullying. One of the tips was for students to tell an adult if they’re bullied.

“That’s what we want to let all of you boys and girls know today – that if anyone ever picks on you, if anyone calls you names, if anyone ever tries to bully you, make sure that you do what?” Phillips asked.

“Tell an adult!” the students yelled.

“Mr. White has done so many things,” one fourth-grade student said.

“For example, he founded the Jesse White Tumbling Team, he has been a teacher and administrator. He has dedicated his life to helping kids to stop or not do drugs, smoke or drink alcohol.”

White encouraged the students to

take their education seriously and focus on their homework. He told them not to quit when facing challenges.

“In life, we always want you to look up and aim high and work hard to be the best you can be. The only time we want you to look down in life is to tie your shoes,” White said.

Joliet City Council considers electronics recycling

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet City Council will decide Tuesday whether to start an electronics recycling program in town.

The council at a Monday workshop meeting heard two proposals: one from Will County that would set up a collection point in Joliet; and the other from Waste Management that would charge residents for a home pickup service.

The county proposal is on the agenda for a vote at the regular council meeting on Tuesday.

Joliet residents now can take TVs and other electronic items to county-run recycling centers in Lockport,

Romeoville and New Lenox Township on certain days. The county proposes putting a collection point in Joliet near the Will County Jail.

“Joliet residents are currently big fans of the Lockport site. They’re there every time that we’re open,” Marta Keane, county recycling specialist, told the council. She added that Joliet residents would be more likely to use the proposed Joliet collection site at Ottawa and Marion streets.

The service would be available the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month, opening for the first time from 7 to 5 p.m. on Oct. 25 if the council approves the program that would cost Joliet $12,600 a year.

Waste Management, meanwhile,

is offering its At Your Door program, which would make a recycling service available for electronics, household hazardous waste and other items that can’t go in the trash or recycling bin.

At Your Door typically costs $1.15 to $1.25 a month and would be charged to all Joliet residents, said Mike Morley, municipal marketing manager for Waste Management. The company now collects all garbage and recycling in the city.

In exchange for the monthly fee, residents would get the convenience of a recycling service that would come to their homes when they need it.

“They just need to leave it at their door or outside their garage,” Morley said.

The same program has been implemented in Plainfield, Shorewood and Elwood.

“There’s no limit to how many times you can use it,” Morley said.

“There’s no waiting for an event.

There’s no having to be at the right place at the right time.”

Also on Tuesday, the council is slated to: • Vote on an intergovernmental agreement for the Houbolt Road bridge project that incorporates a memorandum of understanding the council approved in September; • Hold a public hearing for an expansion of the downtown business property tax to businesses on Cass, Collins and South Chicago streets.

District 3 candidates focused on Weber Road project

fsarver@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – Four Will County Board candidates are running for two District 3 seats and most of their concerns center on capital improvement projects.

Incumbent County Board members Elizabeth Rice, D-Bolingbrook, and Donald Moran, D-Romeoville, are running for re-election this November.

The new contenders are Republicans: Raquel Mitchell, a Wheatland Township trustee, and James Boudouris, a former Romeoville High School educator.

One issue each candidate focused on was the Interstate 55 and Weber Road interchange project, which is expected to begin in 2017.

Boudouris, a former Romeoville High School teacher, coach and athletic director, said he would focus on Weber Road traffic congestion, which he said is a major James problem for District 3.

“We’re a thriving part Boudouris of Will County. The communities have done a great job of attracting businesses and jobs, and we need to

handle the traffic flow,” Boudouris said.

He said he would like to work with community leaders and help them be part of attracting more businesses and jobs to District 3. He also said the county needs to be fiscally responsible and he would like to represent people in the community and watch their tax dollars.

Rice, who was elected to the County Board in 2012, said she is running for re-election because of her concerns for the community, as well as the Weber Road project.

Planes, trains and automobiles: That’s what the people running to represent Will County Board District 1 in the November election have on their minds.

In response to an election questionnaire for Shaw Media, the candidates focused on the changing transportation needs and concerns in the district and the county.

Running in the southeastern district are incumbents Judy Ogalla, R-Monee, and Robert Howard, D-Beecher, as well as newcomers Natalie Murawski, R-Peotone, and Laurie Summers, D-Crete.

When asked in the questionnaire about her main priorities for the district, Ogalla said she would focus on protecting landowners from the effects of the South Suburban Airport, Great Lakes Basin Rail Line and Illiana Corridor projects.

“The uncertainty, loss of privately-owned property, impact on local schools, fire and library districts, local road districts, and drainage districts – end up leaving District 1 residents with less people paying into the tax base and lower property values,”

Ogalla stated in the questionnaire.

The possibility of an airport in the south suburbs, which would be located in Peotone, has been discussed since the late 1960s. In Judy March, county officials Ogalla indicated the project appeared unlikely to move forward. However, the Illinois Department of Transportation has since submitted to the Federal Aviation Administration several Robert revised plans and re- Howard ports related to the airport, according to the project’s website.

The Great Lakes Basin Rail Line is a proposed 278-mile rail line from La Porte, Indiana, through Illinois to Milton, Wisconsin, that would relieve Chicago area shipping congestion by creating a bypass for through traffic, according to the website for the rail line’s environmental impact statement. The rail would run just south of the Will County line bordering District 1. A final scope of study for the project is in the process of being

Judge will keep Peotone Dead body found in back Township murder case of SUV in Joliet Township

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A man who will represent himself in his second trial for a 2007 murder next week has been denied his request for a new judge.

Martin Elvis Gomez, 31, said Judge Carmen Goodman should recuse herself since she represented one of the witnesses against him.

While with the Will County Public Defend- Martin Elvis er’s Office, Goodman Gomez represented Miguel Hurtado on a case in 2002 and 2003.

Goodman said earlier this month she does not recall Hurtado or their interaction.

On Monday, Judge Daniel Rozak, who assigns felony cases, agreed that Goodman should keep Gomez’s case.

“If we were to excuse [any] judge who was a prior assistant public defender or state’s attorney, we wouldn’t have many judges to handle anything around here,” said Rozak, who served

as both before becoming a judge.

Rozak said if any judge represented or prosecuted a defendant within the last three years, they’d be required to transfer the case, but Goodman has been on the bench for nearly a decade.

Goodman was assigned Gomez’s case in 2014 after an appellate court decided Gomez had not been given the proper warnings about representing himself during his first trial in 2011.

On May 10, 2007, Gomez allegedly killed Joseph N. Salamie, his former landlord, and stole $1,200 at Salamie’s horse farm in Peotone Township.

While being held in the Will County Jail, Gomez tried to hire Hurtado to kill an ex-girlfriend who initially provided an alibi for Gomez, but later offered testimony incriminating him in Salamie’s death. Gomez is serving a separate 19-year prison sentence for solicitation of murder for trying to hire Hurtado.

After Rozak had the case sent back to Goodman’s courtroom, the defendant and prosecutors announced they expect to select jurors and being trial next Monday.

Will County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said a resident called at 10:41 a.m. to report the abandoned vehicle on Rosalind Avenue, west of Farrell Road.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene and searched a 2004 GMC Envoy to find a body in the back, Hoffmeyer said. Police believe the body is a man’s but were not able to confirm that.

“Every case is treated as a potential homicide, so there’s an effort not to disturb anything as much as possible,” Will County Chief Deputy Coroner Kevin Stevenson said.

Frankie Green of Joliet said she worries that she won’t be able to find work when her job, which she got through a four-year senior employment program, expires next year.

“I’ll be 70 in two weeks. Who’s going to hire a senior?” Green said.

Kankakee County Community Services Inc., which provides senior employment services in Kankakee and Will counties, was there to offer some answers.

The agency works with seniors, directing them to low-cost training programs and providing other assistance, said Adriana Smith, with Kankakee County Community Services.

“When they’re building their résumés we try to help them build their skill set to enhance their experience to show employers that because these individuals are older, it does not mean that they are wanting in skills,” Smith said.

Hilbert McNeal, 63, of University Park, is a client of Kankakee County Community Services, and he was able to leave his résumé with a prospective employer.

“They told me they’d give me a call,” McNeal said.

She married her beloved husband, Raymond in 1954 and was joyfully married for 62 years. Carol was a member of the National Association of Railway Business Women. She was a parishioner of St. Thaddeus Catholic Church in Joliet as well as St. Jude Catholic Church in Joliet. Carol’s greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed working puzzles and doing her daily crossword. Carol was a devoted and caring wife and mother who will truly missed.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Mystery and crime fiction writer Edward Gorman has died.

Gorman’s publicist says he died Friday after a long battle with cancer.

He was 74.

Gorman, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was the author of dozens of mystery novels, including the Sam McCain, Jack Dwyer and Dev Conrad series.

He set much of his fiction in small

Midwestern towns. His novel “The Poker Club” was adapted into a 2008 film with the same title.

Gorman spent 23 years in advertising, public relations and politics before his first novel, “Rough Cut,” was published in 1984. He then dedicated himself full time to writing. During his career, he received the Shamus Award, the Spur Award and the International Fiction Writers Award.

He was married to Carol Gorman, a children’s fiction writer.

Former Pittsburgh mob underboss Chucky Porter dies at 82 The ASSOCIATED PRESS PENN HILLS, Pa. – The onetime underboss of Pittsburgh’s dwindling Mafia family has died. Charles “Chucky” Porter was 82.

The defunct Pennsylvania Crime Commission described Porter as the “right-hand” man to reputed mob boss Michael Genovese.

The William F. Gross Funeral Home says Porter died Tuesday in Penn Hills, where he lived since being released from prison.

Porter was indicted by a federal grand jury in 1990 and later sentenced to 28 years for racketeering.

But a judge released Porter in 2000 for helping law enforcement disrupt mob operations and keep witnesses from being killed in other parts of the country. Porter’s son, prominent Pittsburgh attorney Charles Porter Jr., had argued for his father’s early release.

The funeral home is handling Friday’s visitation and Saturday’s funeral.

Fred Slaughter, who led UCLA to 1st NCAA hoops title, dies at age 74 The ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES – Fred Slaughter, who helped UCLA win its first NCAA basketball championship as a senior under coach John Wooden in 1964, has died. He was 74.

The school announced Saturday that Slaughter died Oct. 6 at his home in Santa Monica, California. No cause of death was given.

He was the Bruins’ starting center from 1962-64. They were 30-0 in 196364, the school’s first undefeated season that culminated in the first of Wooden’s record 10 NCAA titles. Slaughter averaged 7.9 points and 8.1 rebounds that season.

Joining Slaughter in the starting five were guards Walt Hazzard and Gail Goodrich and forwards Keith Erickson and Jack Hirsch. The lineup ranged from 6-foot-1 to 6-5 and Wooden employed a 2-2-1 zone defense known as the “Bruin Blitz.”

As a sophomore, Slaughter helped

the Bruins to their first Final Four.

The following year, the Bruins lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Slaughter also competed as a freshman on UCLA’s track team in the 100and 220-yard dashes, high jump, shot put and discus.

He served as the school’s senior class president in 1963-64 and earned a degree in business administration.

He went on to earn a MBA degree at UCLA and a law degree from Columbia.

Slaughter became a professional sports agent and attorney in 1969. He served as assistant dean at the UCLA School of Law from 1972-80 and also taught law and business classes.

In 1980, he returned full-time to being a sports agent and attorney, representing NBA and NFL players, including NBA Hall of Famers Clyde Drexler, Dennis Johnson and Jamaal Wilkes. Slaughter also served as leader of the NBA referees’ union.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS OAK BROOK – Gov. Bruce Rauner said Monday that he is creating a new council that will review state agency rules and regulations in an attempt to reduce bureaucracy and save Illinois $250 million over the next decade.

Rauner’s office said each state regulatory agency will have a representative on the new Illinois Competitiveness Council, which Rauner created via executive order. The financial savings will come from the cost of fees directly paid to the state for licenses. Another goal is to reduce 4 million pages in paperwork.

“For years, Illinois has added layers and layers of burdensome rules and regulations to a never-ending bureaucracy,” Rauner said in a statement. “It’s an endless line of red tape that creates a barrier for small businesses and entrepreneurs. By cutting the red tape, we are creating an environment where they can succeed.”

Illinois tollway to display real-time traffic information

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – Technology engineers are installing digital signs along the Jane Addams Tollway that will give drivers speed and accident information in real time.

The Daily Herald reported that as construction on the tollway finishes, crews are installing gantries every half-mile between O’Hare International Airport and Barrington Road to create the active traffic management system, or “smart road.” There will be a total of 29.

When there’s a crash, red X’s will indicate closed lanes.

Messages will update with detours and other notices, such as Amber Alerts.

The system will operate through wireless speed sensors, dozens of cameras and weather stations, which transmit data to the tollway dispatch center in

The administration said the council will work to make sure regulations are up to date and language is easily understandable. It also is tasked with reducing unneeded requirements to save time and money for businesses, social service providers and residents.

The council is seeking public feedback on how to cut bureaucracy. The council’s website has a large red button that users can click that said “Report Red Tape.”

The council also will look for recommendations that will improve the state’s licensing procedures to help job growth. The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation offers licenses in more than 200 categories, but issues fewer than 100 licenses in nearly a third of those individual categories, state officials said.

Rauner’s office said similar efforts in Colorado, Indiana, Kentucky and Massachusetts have been successful.

Caterpillar CEO to retire next year; replacement named

NEW YORK – Caterpillar said Monday that CEO and Chairman Doug Oberhelman will retire from the company next year and will be replaced as CEO by Jim Umpleby, an executive who has worked at the construction and mining equipment company for Doug Oberhelman more than three decades.

Umpleby, 58, will become CEO on Jan. 1.

Umpleby is the president of Caterpillar’s energy Jim and transportaUmpleby tion group.

Oberhelman, 63, originally of Woodstock, will step down as CEO at the end of the year and leave the chairman position at the end of March. He has been

CEO since 2010 and has been with the company for more than 41 years.

Dave Calhoun will become non-executive chairman after Oberhelman retires on March 31. Calhoun is an executive of private equity firm The Blackstone Group LP. Caterpillar has been dealing with falling sales because its customers have been hurt by falling oil prices and slower economic growth around the world, causing them to buy less equipment from Caterpillar.

Shares of Caterpillar Inc. slipped 38 cents to $87.29. Its shares are up about 25 percent in the last 12 months.

More than 1 million downloads for Chicago transit app

CHICAGO – Chicago transit officials said a mobile fare app launched a year ago has been downloaded more than 1 million times.

The Chicago Transit Authority said riders have used the free Ventra transit app to buy more than $110 million in fares.

The smartphone app was developed by the CTA in partnership with Metra, the Chicago

area’s commuter rail system, and Pace, the suburban bus system.

Users can manage their transit accounts, get notifications and see real-time transit tracker information for CTA, Metra and Pace.

Medical examiner: Burned teen’s death ruled homicide

CHICAGO – The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled that the death of a 15-year-old high school student whose body was found burned was a homicide.

The medical examiner said Monday that Demetrius Griffin died from burns. The Steinmetz High School freshman was found early Sept. 17 on Chicago’s West Side. Chicago police responding to a report of a refuse fire found the burned body.

Police said the boy was found near a burned garage and they are conducting a death investigation. No arrests have been reported.

The Chicago Tribune reported that the boy’s body was burned beyond recognition and it took the medical examiner more

than a month to determine the cause and manner of the teen’s death.

Ill. man drowns at Atlantic Beach after sister’s wedding

ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. – An Illinois man in town over the weekend for his sister’s wedding has drowned in the ocean at Atlantic Beach.

Multiple news outlets report police said 38-year-old Robert Hickman Jr., of Champaign, died Saturday after being pulled under by a wave, just hours after attending his younger sister’s wedding in Jacksonville.

Police said the water was rough that day, and a family friend tried to get out to Hickman but was not able to reach him. Hickman was unconscious when lifeguards got him out of the water. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Hickman’s sister, Teleauba Rains, said she was grateful for the last moments she had with her brother before his death.

FBI records: Effort to reduce Clinton email classification

WASHINGTON – A senior State Department official asked the FBI last year to help reduce the classification of an email from Hillary Clinton’s private server, according to FBI investigative files made public Monday. It was to be part of a bargain that would have allowed the FBI to deploy more agents in foreign countries, according to the files.

It was not immediately clear whether the State Department official or someone at the FBI first raised the prospect of a bargain over the email’s classification.

The bureau records, citing an FBI official whose name was censored, said Undersecretary for Management Patrick F. Kennedy sought assistance in exchange for a “quid pro quo.”

But the FBI said Monday it was the now-retired FBI official who first asked Kennedy about deploying more agents overseas. The State Department said the same. The FBI ultimately rejected the idea, which would have allowed the State Department to archive a message related to the 2012 attacks on the U.S. diplomatic compound in

Washington headquarters “never to be seen again,” according to the FBI files.

The email described reports in November 2012 that Libyan police were arresting suspects in the attack. It had been forwarded to Clinton’s private email address by Jake Sullivan, one of her top aides and the department’s director of policy planning, who was using his government email account.

According to the FBI records, a bureau official said Kennedy “asked his assistance in altering the email’s classification in exchange for a ‘quid pro quo,’ ” and that in exchange, “State would reciprocate by allowing the FBI to place more agents in countries where they are presently forbidden.”

“Although there was never a quid pro quo, these allegations were nonetheless referred to the appropriate officials for review,” the FBI said in a statement Monday.

The State Department said Kennedy had been trying to understand the FBI’s classification decisions.

“This allegation is inaccurate and does not align with the facts,” department spokesman Mark Toner said. He added that there was never an increase in the number of FBI agents assigned to Iraq as a result of the conversations.

The disclosure was included in 100 pages the FBI released from its nowclosed investigation into whether the former secretary of state and her aides mishandled sensitive government information that flowed through the private mail server located in her New York home.

The FBI official who spoke with Kennedy was not involved in the investigation of Clinton’s email use, the bureau said.

According to the account in the FBI records, Kennedy proposed using an obscure provision under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act to keep the existence of the classified document from becoming public. By labeling the email unclassified but exempt under the federal records law, the State Department would have avoided criticism that its employees had mishandled classified files but still would have prevented the email’s public release.

The provision cited in the FBI files, known as “B9,” is intended to protect geological and geophysical information and data, including maps, concerning wells and is the most rarely used FOIA exemption.

“Kennedy told (redacted) that the FBI’s classification of the email in question caused problems for Kennedy and Kennedy wanted to classify the document as ‘B9,’ ” the FBI report says.

“Kennedy further stated that the ‘B9’ classification would allow him to archive the document in the basement of DoS (Department of State) never to be seen again.”

Iraqis push toward Mosul in long-awaited offensive

KHAZER, Iraq – The long-awaited offensive to retake Mosul from the Islamic State group began Monday with a volley of U.S.-led coalition airstrikes and heavy artillery bombardments on a cluster of villages along the edge of Iraq’s historic Nineveh plain east of the militant-held city.

Iraq’s Kurdish peshmerga fighters led the initial assault, advancing slowly across open fields littered with booby-trapped explosives as plumes of black and orange smoke rose overhead – the opening phase of an unprecedented campaign expected to take weeks if not months, and involve more than 25,000 troops.

By the end of the day, Kurdish forces had retaken some 80 square miles, according to the president of Iraq’s Kurdistan region. Peshmerga commanders on the ground estimated the offensive retook nine villages and pushed the frontline with IS back five miles.

But the forces’ hold appeared fragile and the gains largely symbolic. Some of the villages were so small they comprised no more than a few dozen homes, and most were abandoned.

And although some troops were less than 20 miles from Mosul’s edges, it was unclear how long it would take to reach the city itself, where more than 1 million people still live.

Aid groups have warned of a mass exodus of civilians that could overwhelm refugee camps.

Iraq’s second-largest city, Mosul fell to IS in the summer of 2014 as the militants swept over much of the country’s north and central areas.

Weeks later the head of the extremist group, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, announced the formation of a self-styled caliphate in Iraq and Syria

from the pulpit of a Mosul mosque.

If successful, the liberation of the city would be the biggest blow yet to the Islamic State group. After a string of victories by Iraqi ground forces over the past year, IS now controls less than half the territory it once held, and Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi has pledged the fight for Mosul will lead to the liberation of all Iraqi territory from the militants this year.

Al-Abadi announced the start of the operation on state TV before dawn Monday, launching the country’s toughest battle since American troops withdrew from Iraq nearly five years ago.

“These forces that are liberating you today, they have one goal in Mosul, which is to get rid of Daesh and to secure your dignity,” al-Abadi said, addressing the city’s residents and using the Arabic acronym for IS. “God willing, we shall win.”

In Washington, Defense Secretary Ash Carter called the Mosul operation “a decisive moment in the campaign” to defeat IS. The U.S. is providing airstrikes, training and logistical support, but insists Iraqis are leading the campaign. On Monday, Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said a small number of U.S. troops were serving as advisers to Iraqi and peshmerga forces on the outskirts of Mosul.

More than 25,000 Iraqi and Kurdish troops will be involved in the operation, launching assaults from five directions, according to Iraqi Brig. Gen. Haider Fadhil. The troops include elite Iraqi special forces who are expected to lead the charge into the city, as well as the Kurdish forces, Sunni tribal fighters, federal police and state-sanctioned Shiite militias.

Auto stocks with a looming recession Dear Mr. Berko: I own 300 shares of General Motors and 600 shares of Ford, which I bought in December 2012, and I still have a profit. Back in May of this year, you wrote to sell General Motors and Ford short because you said auto sales would slow down a lot this year or next year.

You should be careful what you say about those stocks. If you give wrong information, it can hurt people who read the things you say. My stockbroker at Wells Fargo says you are a jerk.

(He used a better word.) His company recommends Ford and General Motors, and so do Standard & Poor’s and Morgan Stanley. So what do you know about these stocks that big industry experts don’t know? So far, GM and Ford are higher than they were when you told us to short those stocks. – FN, Joliet, Ill. Dear FN: Analysts at Wells Fargo, S&P and Morgan Stanley may know more about General Motors and Ford than I do, but their knowing more doesn’t mean they’re right. I don’t keep copies of old columns, but I’m as certain as sunshine that I didn’t

I told readers that the consumer was up to his clavicle in debt, earning less than he did before the Great Recession, and that financing a new car would be the metaphorical straw that breaks his back. I also told readers that record numbers of new cars were parked on dealer lots, packed more tightly than pickles in a jam jar. I told readers that dealers were offering eight-year financing (96 monthly payments) and that 45 percent to 50 percent of new car purchases were being made to subprime borrowers.

And that the U.S. has the lowest labor force participation rate in 60 years should be enough to worry the bejabbers out of GM and Ford, which have

feasted on blockbuster sales during the past few years.

But the kicker that may bring all this conjecture to reality is that dealers are now offering incentives, encouraging customers to buy their cars. Incentives always suggest that trouble may be brewing in River City, and you should have another talk with your Wells Fargo lad. I’d also ask the Wells Fargo lad whether his firm ever issued a sell opinion on GM before it declared bankruptcy. For obvious reasons, most investment brokerages are not permitted by their boards of directors to issue sell opinions. It’s bad for their investment banking business. But my dad would sometimes remind me that “it’s better to be right too soon than right too late.”

Sadly, too many of us are right too late too often.

I also based my opinion on the possibility of a recession next year. Jim Rogers, the brilliant manager of the successful Quantum Group of Funds, and the legendary leftist George Soros are 100 percent certain the U.S. is

headed into a recession. In fact, Soros has recently taken some sizable positions that will be hugely profitable if we have a recession.

And active market movers such as Carl Icahn and Stanley Druckenmiller also see economic turmoil in 2017. Meanwhile, Bessemer Trust, UBS and J.P. Morgan believe there’s a 40 percent chance of a recession in 2017. Even Tony James, chief operating officer of Blackstone, the world’s largest money manager, foresees a U.S. recession in 2017. I’m also concerned about the health of the Federal Reserve’s balance sheet, which has grown from $775 billion to $4.5 trillion in the wake of its silly effort to lower interest rates to zero and print the economy back to health and wealth.

Our biggest concern should be: If we have a recession in 2017, what tools will remain for the Fed to use to repair the economy?

Nearly half of young adults lack retirement savings, pension

The Associated Press NEW YORK – Young Americans with even just $1 saved for retirement are ahead of the pack.

Forty-eight percent of all Americans aged 18 to 30 have zero in retirement savings and no access to a traditional pension, according to a GenForward poll by the Black Youth Project at the University of Chicago with the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

The youngest in that group are more likely to still be in school, but the trend also holds for those in their late 20s. More than 4 in 10 of those aged 25 to 30 have nothing for retirement.

These same Americans are part of a generation whose future retirements, if they happen at all, will be more dependent on their personal savings. That’s because traditional pensions are becoming more and more rare. Only 7 percent of those surveyed say they’re in line to get the coveted benefit, which promises to pay a set amount monthly after retirement.

Plus, young Americans are likely to get less in Social Security benefits

than their parents or grandparents.

The age to receive full Social Security benefits is climbing, up to 67 from 66. And most young Americans don’t have much faith in the Social Security system to begin with. Only 5 percent say they’re very confident in it, and 28 percent say they’re somewhat confident.

Despite all that, a majority of young Americans still say they are confident that they’ll have enough to retire when they want to. African Americans, Asian Americans and white Americans have similar levels of confidence, between 53 percent and 56 percent. Latinos are an exception.

Only 43 percent say they’re very or somewhat confident.

“I feel pretty good about our future,” says Shavonne Henry, a 26-year-old who lives in Vancouver, Washington, with her 25-year-old husband and children. They have some saved up in a 401(k) through her husband’s work and a rolled-over 401(k) account from her old job.

“The reason we got to saving at all was I took a finance class in college, and part of the course was: If you want to have the kind of retirement you want to have, you should start saving at 20,” she says. “I don’t think

that’s talked about enough.”

More employers are looking to give their workers, young and old, a nudge to start saving for retirement by automatically enrolling them in 401(k) plans. At plans administered

by Vanguard, 41 percent of employers did so last year, up from 27 percent five years earlier.

But to get that benefit, a worker needs a job that offers a 401(k) in the first place, and some younger Americans say it’s difficult finding such a benefit.

Allison Riley, a 25-year-old in Monroeville, Alabama, has built up her savings account at the bank by working nights waitressing. But when she asked if the job came with a 401(k) benefit, “they said ‘401 what?’” she says. “I took that as a ‘no.’”

She’s using her savings now to help pay for classes she’s taking, and she hopes to become a high-school teacher. She also says she’s confident about the future. “Once I get to a better job, I know how I like to squirrel away money,” she says. “I think I’ll be OK.” There is no magic answer for how much a person needs to have saved for retirement. Two people with identical ages and incomes could need

very different amounts, depending on how long they expect to work, how much they want to spend in retirement and other variables. Fidelity suggests saving 15 percent of your income each year. Financial advisers suggest saving enough so that your nest egg at retirement is 25 times the annual expenses you’ll need to cover.

The GenForward poll did not ask how much young Americans had saved for retirement, only whether they had done so.

Aisha Ahmouda, a 30-year-old registered nurse, is optimistic about her future despite having little in retirement savings and less faith in the future of Social Security.

She’s pursuing a master’s degree to become a nurse practitioner, a job that comes with loan-assistance programs if she goes on to work in a medically underserved area. She also hopes that it puts her on a career track that will allow her to continue working into her late 60s or early 70s, even if her mobility starts to wane, giving her time to build up savings.

“Not everything is certain, even when you’re putting away savings,” she says. “I’m going to do the best I can and leave the rest up to a higher power.”

helped her to a sizzling 33 on the back nine and a two-under 70 for the day and three-under 141 for the weekend.

That also proved to be the difference in the competition as she edged Benet Academy sophomore Lauren Beaudreau by one stroke for the title.

Curran and Beaudreau were the only golfers to shoot under par on Saturday.

While Curran knew that she was among the leaders, she didn’t realize that she had won until her teammate and best friend, Brianne Bolden, ran to the green to give her a hug.

“I honestly had no idea of where I was at on 18 tee,” Curran said. “There

Local girls volleyball teams primed for Romeoville Sectional GIRLS VOLLEYBALL STATS

kjasnica@shawmedia.com The final countdown begins. It is only one week until the volleyball postseason.

In Class 4A, four teams in the Herald-News’ top five and the three teams close to breaking into the rankings all are in the Romeoville Sectional.

Even reaching the sectional level will be tough. Minooka and Lincoln-Way West are in the T.F. South Regional, while Lincoln-Way East will be at Oak Forest, Plainfield Central and Joliet Catholic at Plainfield Central and Lockport and Joliet West at Joliet West.

Even though Minooka is the No 1 seed, many others will put up a huge fight. Every team will have to bring its “A” game, and it’s the last week that teams have the opportunity to fine-tune their games.

This rotation isn’t working? Well, let’s try running a slide. The outside isn’t getting her serves over? Well, let’s start using the defensive specialist for her instead of the middle.

In all cases, that’s the scenario teams hope for. They hope to be focusing on little things that can earn them a few more points or help them side-out quicker.

This season has seen some big injuries, particularly in the Romeoville Regional. Luckily for two of those teams, they are recovering from those injuries.

Unfortunately for another, they just lost their top gun. In the final game of the Maine West invite, Lockport experienced a heartbreak. Late in the game against Lyons Township, JoDee Kovanda sprained her ankle and she will miss the remainder of the season.

Kovanda, a previous Herald-News player of the week, has led the Porters to a 22-10 record. For the season, she totaled 190 kills, 244 assists, 164 digs, 22.5 blocks and 42 aces.

Even though the loss hit hard, Lockport hopes to keep this season’s momentum going. The Porters still have their eye on getting as far as they can in postseason, and they’re already playing for their teammate.

“JoDee is a one-of-a-kind athlete,” Lockport coach Nick Mraz said. “It’s not just her skill set but her hard work ethic and leadership that makes her our MVP. “When she got hurt, it was 17-17 against a great Lyons team. We scrambled to make subs and put together a lineup to replace her. Although we were all emotional, the girls showed heart and grit to win, 26-24. Losing JoDee is tough, but we will work as hard as possible to make sure we reach the goals we set for ourselves. Our theme this year is ‘All in.’

It’s time to live by that.”

For the Mizuno Cup tournament, East had to play without Haley Hart because of a concussion. The first day, they were able to beat skilled teams because they are strong even with Hart out of the lineup. However, the Griffins saw that they needed their top middle so they could have a stronger net-front presence.

For the postseason, they’ll have her.

“I think the timing for getting Haley back prior to the playoffs is incredibly important for us,” East coach Kris Fiore said. “She is our most efficient hitter with a hitting percentage just under .400 for the season, and she is our team’s best blocker.”

Nahas went down with a back injury, then Emmie Naal and Emily Jones were injured.

Well, the Angels still are missing Naal and Jones, but Nahas came back on a mission in the Autumnfest tournament. The junior setter earned all-tournament honors and helped JCA to a Silver Division championship. Nahas had 126 assists, 27 digs and eight blocks.

Taylor Zurliene, Emily Holbrook, Brenna Testa and Meg Sliwa also had strong tournaments. Holbrook had 38 kills and 33 digs, while Sliwa had 51 digs and Testa added 18 digs. Zurliene stepped up with 46 kills and 43 digs. That shouldn’t be too surprising considering she was a starter for the two years JCA made the trip to state.

Class 3A: With its unbeaten record, Wilmington will host in Round 1 regardless of whether it beats Coal City.

As noted, Seneca (4-4) and Dwight (4-4) both must win and hope their points are sufficient.

So, which area team will have the best chance to go on a long playoff run?

Wilmington? Lemont? Lincoln-Way East? Morris? Someone else? The answer, at least in part, will depend on the draw each area team receives when the brackets are announced Saturday night. Stay tuned.

By class, here is a rundown for our area.

Class 8A: Lockport (6-2) and Lincoln-Way East (6-2) both are in and square off Friday night in Frankfort.

East has more of an opportunity to host a first-round game with a victory, but it may be that neither will host regardless of who wins.

Joliet West (6-2) will visit Plainfield North (6-2). Both are in, but it appears North, which has been near the 7A/8A bubble, probably will be in 7A. If West wins, hosting is possible but not likely because so many 8A teams statewide can finish 9-0 or 8-1.

If Plainfield South wins at Minooka,

the Cougars would qualify but as one of the lowest seeds and would travel in Round 1. As for Bolingbrook, the Raiders, as noted, must beat H-F. Class 7A: We mentioned Plainfield North. It will be close on whether North gets a home game if it beats Joliet West.

If West wins, North definitely will travel.

Lincoln-Way Central (6-2) is in position to beat 2-6 Metea Valley and notch a seventh victory that may land a home game. Lincoln-Way West (5-3) may need a sixth victory over 3-5 Sandburg to qualify but could sneak in at 5-4. Either way, the Warriors will travel in Round 1.

Class 6A: The question surrounding Lemont (8-0) is whether the Indians will qualify in 5A or 6A. While 6A may be more likely, a realistic combination of results statewide this weekend could push them down to 5A. Of course, they will host in whichever class.

Class 5A: Morris (6-2) has a shot at grabbing its seventh victory at home against 6-2 Geneseo and in that case

She was grateful for the many people who helped her to reach this accomplishment.

“I was proud of myself, but I was also thankful for all of the people who helped me to get there, like my parents, coach (Brian) Shannon and coach (Bob) Ward,” Curran said. “They’ve definitely helped shape me to become the person that I am. My coaches taught me how to stay calm, since if I was not able to stay calm, I definitely wouldn’t have done what I did.

“I was really nervous on the first tee on the first day because it was the state tournament and there were a lot of big names there. I tried not to think about what other people were doing but just tried to beat the course or stay even with it and play my game. I felt confident but was still nervous going into the second day, but I knew that I could do it if I put my mind to it.

“I’m very thankful and feel very blessed to have been given this opportunity. Being the state champion gives me a boost of confidence, but honestly, the hard work doesn’t stop here. I’m just going to work as hard as I did last winter in order to put in the work for next year.”

The Knights also made school history when Curran and Bolden became their program’s first medalists. Bolden, a sophomore who went to state last year, got a birdie on her final hole to finish with a 75. That gave her a twoday total of 149, which was good for a tie for 10th.

“I knew that Grace had to get up and down to win,” Bolden said. “When she made that putt to win, it was kind of a win for all of us. I gave her a hug and she just started bawling her eyes out. But I knew that they were tears of joy for both of us. We’ve put in so

much work all of the time, so it was great to finally have the outcome of a state champion from Central.”

Knights coach Brian Shannon was thrilled by his program’s historic day.

“It was such an awesome moment for Grace,” Shannon said. “To be able to play so well on the back was absolutely amazing. It’s props to her for making a great bunker shot and then sinking a four-footer for a par.

And for Bri to keep it together on the front after a double bogey and then maintaining par. It was fitting for her to get a birdie on the last hole to make all-state.

“To have a state champion in golf, so much has to go right. I give props to Grace’s work ethic and her mental capacity to concentrate when she needs to. She never gets too high or too low, and she’s improved on that aspect tremendously from her freshman year.”

Let’s go directly to the bottom line.

With Week 9 of the high school football season upon us, and employing the latest information available, we see the Joliet area having at least 10 teams in the playoffs.

In addition, there are five 4-4 area teams that are on the must-win bubble – Bolingbrook, Plainfield South, Peotone, Seneca and Dwight. All Bolingbrook must do is beat 8-0 Homewood-Flossmoor, one of the state’s best teams. It happened last season, but can it again?

If South wins a fifth when it visits rival Minooka on Friday night, and Seneca beats 1-7 Sandwich, that would bring us potentially to 12 qualifiers.

Of course, that assumes Seneca will be OK on playoff points (opponent victories) with a 5-4 record, which may or may not be the case. The cutoff for 5-4 teams making the playoffs could fall at about 37, and the Irish have 33 through eight weeks.

Things will be much more difficult for Peotone, which will be home to 8-0 Herscher, and Dwight, which finishes

Less dominant Arrieta vs. Hill as NLCS shifts to Los Angeles

The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Back in spring training, Joe Maddon cornered Jake Arrieta for a frank conversation about his workload during the upcoming season.

Maddon knew Arrieta would be upset any time he got lifted early, especially after toss- Jake Arrieta ing 229 innings for the Cubs on his way to winning the NL Cy Young Award in 2015.

“But understand it’s going to pay off in the latter part of the season,” Maddon counseled his ace. “Our intention is to play deeply into October and possibly November this year.”

Maddon knew Arrieta might just feel invincible after shouldering the burden of huge innings while compiling a 1.77 ERA. He didn’t want the right-hander thinking he could pitch that much every year.

Arrieta bought into Maddon’s plan, and it’s gotten him to the NL Championship Series with 1971/3 innings and a 3.10 ERA. “I’m in a much better place,” Arrieta said Monday before the Cubs worked out. “Going through that last year has prepared myself as well as the rest of the guys mentally for a longer run this year, and we’ve been able to handle the moments mentally a lot better as well as physically.”

With the series tied 1-1, Arrieta starts for the Cubs against Los Angeles’ Rich Hill on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium.

Arrieta threw his first career no-hitter in the venerable ballpark on Aug. 30 last year in a game that began shortly after 5 p.m., the same starting time as Game 3. Shadows can creep between the mound and home plate at that hour, which Arrieta believes favors the pitchers.

“I really think it can be difficult to pick up spin,” he said. “From a pitching perspective, you want to be aggressive early because of the fact that it is a little more difficult to pick up some rotations and spin on pitches when the shadow’s kind of in between and then it starts to creep out to the mound.”

In his no-hitter last year, a 2-0 victory, Arrieta struck out 12 and allowed two baserunners – one on an error and the other via walk.

“It’s going to be a little different feel, but at the same time, for the most part, it’s just about the same lineup,”

he said. “You try to tackle them accordingly. Use some knowledge that I have from the past to kind of help me tomorrow. But it’s just another game on a big stage.”

The mound is a place Arrieta feels comfortable. He complimented the Dodgers ground crew for creating a consistent surface that gives him confidence in his positioning and Rich Hill footing.

“When you’ve been in these situations before, it makes it a lot easier just to kind of take that deep breath, focus on your execution and go from there,” he said.

Hill follows Clayton Kershaw as the second straight left-hander to start for the Dodgers in the NLCS, and he draws inspiration from the three-time Cy Young Award winner.

“He’s got the stuff, right? You can’t argue that,” Hill said. “But then there’s another level of that competitiveness that comes out where if you’re on the other side and you’re down on one knee, he’s going to put you away.

That’s something that when I see that, you just never quit, you never give up, you continue to attack.”

Hill had a 2.12 ERA during the regular season, allowed a combined five runs in seven innings starting Game 2 of the NL Division Series against Washington and returning on short rest in the decisive Game 5.

Now, Hill returns on regular rest and manager Dave Roberts said the finger blisters that have bothered the left-hander this season are not an issue.

“With Richie, it’s an inning-by-inning thing, so we’ll just keep our fingers crossed,” Roberts said. “Because all things being equal, the blister holds, I really, really like our chances.”

Hill hasn’t thrown more than 93 pitches since being acquired from Oakland in August. The blisters have affected how often he starts and how long he pitches.

The Dodgers will have to find a way to beat the Cubs without Kershaw, who has worked overtime in these playoffs and isn’t expected to be available for the next three games in Los Angeles.

Roberts confirmed that rookie Julio Urias is set to start Game 4 on Wednesday, followed by Japanese rookie Kenta Maeda, who has allowed seven runs over seven innings in two postseason appearances.

MINOOKA – The Minooka girls volleyball team went 4-1 at its tournament over the weekend to finish second.

The Indians (23-5, 11-1) topped Herscher, Normal West, LaSalle-Peru and Normal West, before falling to Normal U-High 25-21, 18-25, 25-19.

Brooklyn Bachmann had 130 assists and Taylor Baranski had 61 digs. Alli Papesh chipped in 31 digs, 40 kills and 15 blocks; Rocky Perinar 20 digs, 47 kills and four blocks, and Holly Bonde 33 digs, 36 kills, eight blocks and four aces.

Lincoln-Way Central tournament: Lincoln-Way West went 3-2, beating Lin-

Bulls get Carter-Williams from Bucks for Snell THE ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – The Bulls traded Tony Snell to Milwaukee on Monday in exchange for Michael Carter-Williams as the two Central Division foes swapped two guards going into their fourth NBA seasons.

The 6-foot-6 Carter-Williams was the 11th overall selection by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2013 draft and he was traded to Milwaukee during the

2014-15 season. He has averaged 14.5 points, 5.6 rebounds and 6.1 assists in 190 games, including 170 starts.

Bulls general manager Gar Forman said the team was excited to add Carter-Williams – “a two-way player who adds versatility and depth.”

MLB Judge stops attempt to ban Indians’ name, logo

The Associated Press TORONTO – An Ontario judge quashed a last-minute effort to attempt to bar the Cleveland Indians from using their team name and “Chief Wahoo” logo during Monday’s night playoff game in Toronto.

The legal challenge by indigenous activist Douglas Cardinal came hours before the team played the Blue Jays in Game 3 of the AL Championship Series.

The long-standing logo, which appears on some team caps and jerseys, depicts a grinning, red-faced cartoon with a feather headband.

Ontario Superior Court Justice Tom McEwen dismissed Cardinal’s application on Monday and said he would give his reasons at a later date.

Monique Jilesen, the lawyer for Cardinal, earlier told McEwen that the game could be played with spring training uniforms that don’t carry the name or “Chief Wahoo” logo.

“You could not call a team the New

York Jews. Why is it OK to call a team the Cleveland Indians?” Jilesen told the judge, calling the team name and logo racist and against Ontario’s human rights code.

At least 27 lawyers representing the Cleveland Indians, Major League Baseball and others, including the plaintiffs, attended the hearing, which was moved to a larger court room to accommodate the crowd.

MLB said it “appreciates the concerns” of those who find the name and logo “offensive.”

The Indians dropped Wahoo as their primary logo two years ago, switching to a block “C’’, and reduced the logo’s visibility. However, one of the caps the Indians wear at home has the “Wahoo” logo on its front and Cleveland’s jerseys remain adorned with the Wahoo logo on one sleeve.

Cardinal’s lawyers asked the court to bar the usage of the name and logo by the team, MLB and Toronto team owner Rogers Communications, which rebroadcasts the TBS game in Canada.

Bears’ frustration builds with near misses

LAKE FOREST – The more the Bears think they’ve found answers to their struggles, the more their losses and frustration build.

After starting 1-5 for the first time since 2004, the Bears are heading to Green Bay for a Thursday night game with their biggest disappointment still fresh in their memories – Sunday’s blown fourth-quarter lead in a 17-16 loss to Jacksonville.

“I don’t know what it is, but I know that there are spurts where we play well enough to win, and there are spurts where it looks like we don’t know what the [heck] we’re doing,” guard Kyle Long said.

They’ve done a lot right, but two losses in three winnable games leaves them looking for ways to keep from packing it in early.

“We know that we can compete against any team,” linebacker Willie Young said. “It’s never a case where we haven’t had an opportunity to win.

“It’s just closing it out.”

Quarterback Brian Hoyer has a franchise-record four straight 300-yard passing games, and on Sunday he started to find receiver Alshon Jeffery with more regularity.

Jeffery had 93 yards on seven catches, while Cameron Meredith had his second straight 100-yard receiving day.

The defense stopped Jacksonville on third down eight out of 10 times and forced two turnovers. Yet they saw a 13-0 lead after three quarters disintegrate.

“I think our guys can see how close we are,” coach John Fox said Monday.

“Yesterday was no different than the week before against Indy.”

The Bears lost that one in the final four minutes.

“I mean, we gave away a couple plays, but all in all we’re getting better

every week and it’s showing out there,” linebacker Danny Trevathan said.

“Turnovers, execution – but it’s just a couple plays here and there that we have to minimize.”

The Bears’ defense is hoping to get a major asset back this week.

Linebacker Pernell McPhee on Friday became eligible to be considered for activation to the 53-man roster from the physically unable to perform list.

McPhee has been recovering from offseason knee surgery.

If McPhee is deemed able to play against the Packers, it will be on only two practices, since there was no practice held Monday.

“He’ll do some stuff with the training staff and some of the coaching staff, and we’ll just have to get a feel, and make a decision before Thursday,” Fox said.

The Bears will closely watch several other defensive injuries, including starting cornerbacks Tracy Porter (knee) and Bryce Callahan (hamstring).

In addition, guard Josh Sitton was hoping to face his former team after being signed off waivers by the Bears just before the start of the regular season.

But Sitton, who already had a shoulder injury, suffered an ankle injury in the fourth quarter against Jacksonville and Fox said he wouldn’t have practiced Monday if a practice had been held.

Quarterback Jay Cutler (thumb sprain) remains sidelined, as well, but with Hoyer having gone 189 throws without an interception, the Bears have avoided pushing their starter into returning too soon.

The Bears haven’t started 1-6 since 2000. Fox is doing what he can to keep morale high, including citing recent NFL history.

“You know, a team a year ago, the Kansas City Chiefs, started 1-5 and they made the playoffs,” Fox said. “So all of those things are possible, but if you lay down your sword, not so much.”

HONOLULU – Two wildlife issues have collided in Hawaii, pitting one group of animal defenders against another in an impassioned debate. The point of contention? Deadly cat poop and the feral felines that produce it.

Federal researchers believe feces from the legions of feral cats roaming Hawaii is spreading a disease that is killing Hawaiian monk seals, some of the world’s most endangered marine mammals. Some conservationists advocate euthanizing those cats that no one wants, and that’s got cat lovers up in arms.

“It’s a very difficult, emotional issue,” said state Sen. Mike Gabbard, chairman of a committee that earlier this year heard and then abandoned a proposal to ban the feeding of feral cats on state land after an outcry. “It struck a nerve in our community.”

The problem stems from a parasite common in cats that can cause toxoplasmosis, a disease that killed at least five female Hawaiian monk seals and three males since 2001, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

“While eight seals may not sound like a lot of animals, it actually has pretty large ramifications for an endangered population where there’s only about 1,300 seals in existence at this point in time,” said Michelle Barbieri, veterinary medical officer for NOAA’s Hawaiian monk seal research program.

Scientists believe monk seals become exposed to toxoplasmosis by ingesting contaminated water or prey.

Felines are the only animals that can shed Toxoplasma gondii eggs, or oocysts. The parasites enter their digestive tract through infected prey then multiply in the small intestine and produce the eggs. Outdoor cats excrete the eggs in their feces, which researchers say washes into the ocean.

The eggs accumulate in invertebrates that live along the sea floor, where monk seals often feed. They can survive in fresh water, saltwater and soil for up to two years.

Any warm-blooded animal can become infected. California sea otters have died from toxoplasmosis, and it’s one of the major reasons the Hawaiian crow, alala, is extinct in the wild. Toxoplasmosis is rarely problematic for people with healthy immune systems, but it’s why doctors advise pregnant women not to handle kitty litter.

“Everything else here – deer, sheep, goats, cats, mongoose – they’re all invasive, they’re all introduced,” said Angela Amlin, NOAA’s acting Hawaiian monk seal recovery coordinator, adding that cats have no predators in Hawaii to control their population.

Marketing research commissioned by the Hawaiian Humane Society in 2015 estimated that some 300,000 feral cats roam Oahu alone.

Marine debris, climate change, predation and human interaction all threaten the survival of Hawaiian monk seals. But feral cats present their greatest disease concern, Amlin said.

“As conservationists, what we really have to look at is this is what Hawaii’s native ecosystem includes, and cats are unfortunately not part of that,” Amlin said. “When it comes to the feral cat population, there should be a program in place to bring in these

animals, adopt the ones that are adoptable and humanely euthanize those that are not.”

Others take offense at that notion.

Classifying animals with labels such as native and invasive creates a “hierarchy in which the protection of certain animals comes at the suffering of others,” Hawaiian Humane Society President and CEO Pamela Burns wrote in a letter opposing the state Senate bill that would have banned cat-feeding on state land. She contended that the 300,000 figure overstates the problem because the study looked at how many cats people were feeding and might have missed instances where multiple people fed the same

outdoor cat.

Those who care for stray cats advocate trapping, neutering and spaying to help control their population.

The University of Hawaii’s Manoa campus, in Honolulu, started a feral cat management program – with authorized feeders trained in tasks such as trapping and feces disposal – after the stench and mess from hundreds of cats prompted complaints, especially when children at a campus daycare center got flea bites, said Roxanne Adams, director of buildings and grounds.

The program started in 2011 and appears to have reduced the number of felines, she said.

Euthanizing cats is unacceptable unless they’re extremely sick, said Alicia Maluafiti, board president of animal welfare group Poi Dogs and Popoki.

“I totally disagree with the ... generalization that cat people love cats more than these endangered species,” Maluafiti said. “What we just don’t advocate is the wholesale killing, the extermination, of one species ... for one.”

After the birth of Ronan, Minara’s obsessive compulsive disorder flared up and she experienced postpartum depression. She now had pain everywhere. By spring, she had overcome the OCD and the depression with support from family, friends and her church. She decided to drop the excess weight and scheduled gastric bypass surgery.

Four days before Minara’s surgery, she was back in the hospital with heart attack symptoms. The diagnosis? Two pulmonary embolisms.

Additional testing showed Minara had Factor V Leiden, a mutation in one of the clotting factors in her blood. She will take blood thinners for the rest of her life.

As her health weakened, Minara’s faith strengthened.

“When your self-reliance and ability to take care of yourself is taken away, you rely more on your heavenly father,” Minara said. “You feel him more.”

In July, family surprised Minara and Tony with a budget trip to Florida so they could get married and forget their troubles for a few days.

In September, Tony, who took many days off work to help care for Minara and their two boys, lost his job.

In addition to driving a forklift, Tony has worked as a tire technician and in security.

“He’s just looking for a job that will pay the bills,” Minara said. “He’d love to do something in the scientific field, but that will require us to be financially stable for him to go back to school or take an apprenticeship.”

In the meantime, Minara still has pain and is seeing a pain specialist.

All she and Tony want to do, Minara said, is repay the hardship loan of $9,000 and go back to work. Tony is working odd jobs.

Once he finds another full-time job, they can make the mortgage payments, she added, even if Minara still can’t work outside the home. If she can’t, she plans to continue growing her home business of making jewelry, which she sells on Etsy.

“Either way, I plan on working,” Minara said. “I have no desire to go down without a fight. I will do something. I won’t sit on my butt for the rest of my life, you know?”

MORRIS – A year and a half ago, Minara Bogart was living a different life.

Now, the 30-yearold Morris woman is struggling to regain her health and keep her home.

Up until May 2015, Bogart was working Minara her “dream job” in Bogart Aurora as a customer service representative for a vacuum cleaner company.

“I love fixing people’s problems,” she said.

Her then-boyfriend, Tony Bogart, was working as a forklift operator.

They’d bought a modest house.

They planned to fix it up; they wanted their 7-year-old son, Titus, to grow up there. It was a paycheck to paycheck, but contented, lifestyle – until the day Minara suddenly had trouble with her right arm.

She had trouble bending the arm.

It hurt, felt warm to the touch and had red streaks. Fearing she had a blood clot, Minara went straight to the emergency room. An ultrasound confirmed her fears.

Doctors thought the blood clot was a fluke and possibly due to the hormone-based contraception she had recently begun taking, she said. Minara was told to stop the contraception and take blood thinners to dissolve the clot. She also went on short-term disability, she added.

Two months later, Minara was pregnant. An elevated blood pressure reading prompted a consultation with a specialist in high-risk pregnancy.

Minara said the specialist blamed her obesity, but advised she continue the blood thinners during her pregnancy even though the clot was gone.

During the pregnancy with Ronan, now 7 months, Minara also developed gestational diabetes and symphysis pubis dysfunction, which caused tremendous pain due to excessive movement of the joint aligning the left and right pubic bones.

During that time, the short-term disability ended. Minara assumed she and Tony had fixed the financial stress with a hardship program through the bank that holds their mortgage.

Minara had difficulty accepting the help.

“I’ve always worked in my adult life,” Minara said. “I took pride in working and not having to rely on

measurements don’t weaken the ability of lipid levels to predict harmful events like heart attack and stroke. In fact, post-meal measures are thought to strengthen their predictive ability. This observation might stem from the fact most people eat several meals plus snacks during the day. That means we spend most of our time in a “fed” state, not a fasting state. So lipid levels after eating may best reflect our normal physiology.

Having said this, I still ask some patients to come in the morning for fasting blood tests. First, high levels of triglycerides do increase the risk of heart disease. Very high levels can cause other health problems, including inflammation of the pancreas. If a person’s triglycerides tend to be high, I like to monitor them in the fasting state so the results can be compared fairly to previous fasting results.

Also, a fasting blood sugar (done on the same blood sample) is valuable in monitoring people at risk for getting diabetes.

So there can be two reasons, in certain patients, to obtain a fasting blood sample.

So ask your doctor if you really need to skip breakfast before your next blood draw.

There might be a good reason, like the ones I’ve just given. But there might not be.

Traditions die hard. But science eventually preserves only the traditions with proven value.

Dear Dr. K: I heard fasting no longer will be required before a cholesterol test. Will the results still be as accurate?

Dear Reader: To answer your question, I first need to describe what a “cholesterol test” is. There are three types of cholesterol that typically are measured: LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, HDL (“good”) cholesterol and total cholesterol (basically, the sum of LDL and HDL). There is a fourth type of fat measured at the same time: triglycerides. Most doctors order all four tests as part of what’s called a “lipid (fat) panel.”

LDL, HDL and total cholesterol levels are not much affected by having recently eaten, but triglycerides are. If measuring the triglycerides is not that important, then fasting becomes less important. Fasting is a hassle, for both patients and doctors.

It might be a hassle for you to come for a blood test first thing in the morning, then to have breakfast and then to begin your day. And if your schedule doesn’t allow you to have the test until later in the day, continuing to fast becomes quite unpleasant.

Indeed, if you have diabetes, long fasts can be dangerous.

International guidelines recently published in the European Heart Journal became the latest official recommendation against routine fasting for cholesterol tests. I spoke to my colleague, Dr. Naomi Fisher, an endocrinologist at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She noted these guidelines defend what many health care systems and doctors have been practicing for several years already. That’s because many studies in recent years have found eating has only slight, clinically insignificant effects on total, HDL and LDL cholesterol.

Because I have distanced myself from others around here, I’m not sure if I should say anything to her because if I do, it will mean I won’t have any friends around at all. Yesterday, I mentioned the rule of 20, which some players, whatever their age, use to decide between an initial pass and a one-level opening bid. As I explained, I believe that that is a bad idea. However, if you have a long suit, it is a useful guideline for deciding whether to open one or to pre-empt.

Look at today’s South hand. What would you open, and how would your auction proceed? Assuming South ends in four hearts, how should he plan the play after the defenders take two spade tricks, then shift to diamonds?

For the rule of 20, you add highcard points to the number of cards in your two longest suits. So, today’s South hand is worth 20 (11 plus 9).

It should be opened one heart, not three hearts. North should respond two no-trump, the Jacoby Forcing Raise, and South should jump to four hearts to indicate a minimum opening with no side-suit singleton or void. (If South did open three hearts, probably North would raise to four, more in hope than expectation, but that is beside the point!)

South is faced with four losers: two spades, one heart and one diamond. If he immediately starts on trumps, he should lose those tricks. As I am confident you noticed, declarer must win the third trick with dummy’s diamond ace and play three rounds of clubs to discard his second diamond. Then he can table his trumps and claim.
