mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Will County Board’s Legislative and Policy Committee talked Tuesday about an issue that has affected communities throughout America and may one day affect Will County.

Committee Chairwoman Suzanne Hart, R-Naperville, and the committee discussed with lobbyist Brent Hassert the county’s push to bring groundwater monitoring to quarry sites.

Hassert said state legislation was passed a few years ago to put more parameters and testing on the materials that enter quarries, but groundwater monitoring legislation “has never really risen to the top.” He said there’s been tremendous pushback from the aggregate industry and even some state agencies.

This appears to be affecting Will County more directly than other areas of the state. The county has more quarry fill facilities than any other Illinois county, Hassert said, so the legislation has been more

now” to protect residents. He said in other areas of the country, wells have been contaminated and caused the condemnation of properties.

Hassert suggested the county consider reviewing ordinances and reaching out to municipalities so quarry companies don’t try to bypass county authority and annex to municipalities just to avoid paying for groundwater monitoring.

Although he wouldn’t expect all municipalities to be on board, he said intergovernmental agreements or understandings between the county and municipalities may help Will County make groundwater monitoring a reality.

County Board Speaker Jim Moustis, R-Frankfort, said the aggregate companies say it’s a “cost” for them to fund groundwater monitoring, but in reality they don’t want to be liable for contaminated water.

“This stuff is really dangerous to Will County,” Moustis said. “Maybe all of us sitting in this room won’t see the effects, but I guarantee your grandchildren will.”

Townhome building explodes in Romeoville

aschier@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – Azariah Rush felt a shaking Tuesday evening in her Romeoville home.

“I ran outside and I saw the whole thing collapse,” the 18-year-old said of a nearby townhouse building on Wespark Boulevard.

The explosion occurred about 7 p.m. during an active gas leak, injuring two Nicor workers, one seriously, according to the Romeoville Fire Department, although a fire official could not confirm with certainty late Tuesday that the leak caused the blaze.

The scene was still active about 9 p.m. and all surrounding homes had been evacuated, a Romeoville fire official said, adding that the residents of the affected structure did not appear to have been home at the time of the explosion.

Two units were damaged in the fiveunit building, the official said.

Hassert referenced the Operation Silver Shovel illegal dumping scandal of the 1990s that prompted Cook County to take legal action that has now caused some of the debris from Cook County construction and demolition sites to end up in the quarries of neighboring Will County.

And because of the age of Chicago, Hassert said there’s a lot of redevelopment and demolition going on.

“We have the facilities, fortunately and unfortunately,” Hassert said. “They serve a purpose for our communities, no doubt, but we’ve become the dumping ground.”

Committee Vice Chairman Robert Howard, D-Beecher, said the water in rural wells is changing.

“Everybody that lives on a well in a rural area knows our well water is changing,” Howard said. “It’s not what it used to be.”

JOLIET – Lora McGuire abruptly stopped one of her students from entering a patient’s room.

McGuire was a nursing professor at Joliet Junior College. Her students were performing their clinicals at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

The student had a black eye.

When McGuire learned the student’s husband inflicted the injury, she told the student, “You have to go to the police.” The student’s reply stunned McGuire: “He is the police.”

The student was Kathleen Savio.

Her husband was Drew Peterson. That encounter convinced McGuire to join the Will County Take Back the Night committee.

As McGuire looks back on the 20 years Will County has hosted the annual grass-roots rally and candlelight vigil, she feels the event is meeting its goal.

“We wanted to raise awareness,” she said.

This year’s event is Oct. 16, a Sunday and not the traditional weekday.

Bell said one of the community boxes went to the Plainfield Junior Woman’s Club. The club received permission from the village of Plainfield to tie ribbons and put up a sign in Settler’s Park near the Village Hall, Bell said.

Like McGuire, Bell had attended the events but became more involved when domestic abuse affected one of her friends.

Joliet Firefighter of the Year has kind heart

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – His fellow firefighters on Company One’s B Shift felt it would be too difficult to single out one of the many times Scott Shear has saved lives over his 24-year career.

Rather, it was a routine non-emergency call last summer where Shear showed the kindness and concern for others that earned him Joliet Firefighter of the Year honors, Joliet Fire Department Chief Joe Formhals told the Exchange Club of Joliet on Tuesday.

A paralyzed woman had fallen and called for assistance. Apparatus Operator Shear drove the fire engine to her sparsely furnished apartment, and the crew helped her back into her wheelchair and learned she had not eaten for a few days, Formhals said. She told firefighters she’d hoped to go down to the corner store and buy a bag of chips for dinner.

“When the call was finished [Shear] went to a local restaurant and bought this young paralyzed woman a few days’ worth of cooked meals with his own money,” Formhals said.

Shear then had another firefighter deliver the meals because “he didn’t

After graduating from Joliet Central High School, Shear joined the Marine Corps and served in Beirut and Grenada before returning stateside. He worked in a steel mill and machine shop, but

realized he “missed the camaraderie” of the military and began looking for a similar environment.

“My friend Ron Schroeder had gotten on the fire department and said they were taking applications. I took the tests and placed Number 2 on the list,” Shear said. “I enjoy that camaraderie and I like helping people. Those have been my two main goals.”

Formhals also said the mechanically inclined Shear has repaired and built many pieces of department equipment over the years.

The Exchange Club also recognized Tuesday the winners of the annual Fire Prevention Poster Contest. The firstgrade winner was Kassidy Barnes of Carl Sandburg Elementary School; the second-grade winner was Madison Fleming of Ridge Elementary School; the third-grade winner was Bella Nelson of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School; the fourth-grade winner was Sophie Strange of Riverview Elementary School; and the fifth-grade winner was Sophia Benedick of St. Mary Nativity School. Exchange Club President and retired Joliet firefighter George Bode also acknowledged Formhals and Deputy Chief Ray Randich, who are both planning to retire next year.

Fairview Homes residents get online access with lab

Her mother, Shawanda Rich, has used them to work on a résumé and look for jobs.

They’re residents at Fairview Homes, where the Housing Authority of Joliet recently opened a computer center.

Ultimately, the computers are there to help residents who otherwise may not have access to the internet develop resources they need for the day when they will look for other housing. HAJ hopes to demolish the housing project in two to three years.

In the meantime, the computers also have become a resource for after-school programs at Fairview.

“They’re fun,” Akelah said Tuesday afternoon as she did homework and waited her turn in the computer lab.

She especially liked a certain academic website. “It taught you how to spell, and it told you multiplication problems.”

er at home, but they can’t afford internet access, so the computers at the Fairview Community Center are “a blessing.”

Sometimes Rich uses the computers to Google answers for questions her kids have. She also gets help in using the internet.

“I come here all the time,” Rich said.

“I bettered my résumé, and then I did a job search.”

The computer lab opened Oct. 3.

It is funded with a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development through a program called

Resident Opportunity for Self-Sufficiency. The grant is used to pay the ROSS coordinator who oversees the lab and its programs.

The first class offered at the lab was on financial literacy. The next one is on résumé writing.

“We’ve had a lot of people come here to job search,” ROSS coordinator Sharon Cosey said, noting that many of the residents cannot afford computers or internet access. And, they don’t live near a library where they could use public computers.

“Because we’re so far from everything, this is very convenient for them,” Cosey said.

The ultimate goal is self-sufficiency, said Mark Jakielski, chief operating officer for HAJ’s Public Housing Program.

Jakielski spoke to Fairview residents, local officials and others at a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony for the computer lab Tuesday.

“This computer lab is a natural bridge for what’s going to occur here, which is a demolition of Fairview Homes in two or three years,” Jakielski said.

HAJ has not yet even applied to HUD for approval for demolition of Fairview Homes. But the agency has experience in the demolition of Des Plaines Garden Homes and Poole Garden Homes as it replaces low-income housing projects of another era with mixed-income developments. Residents receive Section 8 vouchers to live elsewhere.

HAJ CEO Michael Simelton said there is a lot of work to do before Fairview Homes can be demolished, but, he said, a timetable of two to three years “is very realistic.”

JJC board postpones vote on president’s contract

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The contract for the new Joliet Junior College president was not voted on at Tuesday’s board meeting.

Even though approval of the contract for President Judy Mitchell was on the agenda, the JJC Board of Trustees decided not to vote on it. At the Sept. 13 board meeting, the board unanimously approved Mitchell as the college’s ninth president.

Board President Robert Wunder-

lich said there were a few items regarding the contract the board has to work through and it will likely be approved at an upcoming special meeting.

“It will be forthcoming. The contract is going to happen,” Wunderlich said.

Before trustees were going to consider approval of Tuesday’s agenda, they went into closed session for roughly one hour.

Absent from the meeting were board Vice Chairman Andrew Mihelich, Trustee Daniel O’Connell and Student Trustee Kathleen Duong.

Pedestrian dies after crash

The collision occurred at 12:42 p.m. as the man was walking from the northwest corner of the intersection toward the southwest corner, Joliet Police Department Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said.

“The pedestrian is a homeless man from the area who many officers have encountered on prior occasions,” Gregory noted.

Though Jefferson Street traffic had a green light, the man apparently stepped off the curb and into the path of a truck that was able to stop short, Gregory said. The pedestrian continued crossing and was struck by a black Jaguar that was in the inside lane – about one car-length behind the truck in the outside lane.

“That driver attempted to stop but could not before the man was struck and bounced onto the hood and windshield, then fell on the pavement,” Gregory said.

The man suffered compound fractures to both legs, a left arm fracture and bruising to his brain, according to police reports. He was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, where he was listed in critical condition.

Chief Brian Benton said police were later informed by hospital personnel that the man had died from his injuries.

The Joliet man who was driving the Jaguar was not injured or ticketed. Gregory said several other witnesses, the truck driver and surveillance video from a nearby business support his account of the incident.

The intersection was closed much of Tuesday afternoon as investigators reviewed the crash, Gregory said. As of 4 p.m. Tuesday, it had partially reopened.

Lincoln-Way D-210 seeks new business official

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Lincoln-Way District 210 is looking for an assistant superintendent of business and posted the opening about two weeks ago.

According to the district’s website, the opening for the position was posted Sept. 28. The assistant superintendent of business will administer “all aspects of the school system’s business and facility operations,” according to the job description.

District officials will collect applications, Taryn Atwell, the district’s spokeswoman, stated in an email Tuesday.

This past summer, the district hired Kelly Luzzo and Richard Pagliaro as the finance director and interim business manager, respectively, following the retirement of Ronald Sawin, the former assistant superintendent of business. “[The] finance director holds the permanent position. The position for assistant superintendent of business will remain posted until filled,” Atwell stated.

She stated that the amount of time the interim business manager will work for the district depends on when the assistant superintendent of business position is filled.

Sawin’s accelerated retirement in April has been one of multiple controversies among residents this year at District 210, which is trying to fix its dire finances.

Plainfield considering more detailed food truck ordinance

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield Village Board will consider at an upcoming meeting some specific zoning provisions for food trucks in the village.

The board’s Committee of the Whole held a workshop Monday to look at proposed zoning code changes. Much discussion during the meeting, a video of which the village posted on YouTube, was devoted to food trucks.

Currently, food trucks are allowed on private property with the property owner’s consent, but not on public right of way except for special events, such as Cruise Nights or Plainfield Fest.

The committee was not opposed to requiring food truck operators to get a permit from the village, provide proper proof of food permitting through the Will County or Kendall County health departments, and meet the Plainfield Fire Protection District’s food truck guidelines and regulations. Host locations also would need a permit to bring in food trucks.

Trustee Ed O’Rourke said he’d like to keep food trucks as restricted as possible, adding that food trucks are a better

fit for an urban setting with thousands of people in a close radius, where restaurants physically cannot serve that many people. Plainfield, on the other hand, doesn’t have a food desert, he said.

O’Rourke said entrepreneurs have spent a great deal of money establishing their brick-and-mortar restaurants and he’s not sure permitting food trucks creates a level playing field. He noted truck operators can put in a smaller investment than restaurant owners, while getting a share of the market. He said the trucks do fit in well at Plainfield Fest.

Trustee Margie Bonuchi was concerned with how the village would impose a time limit on food trucks, such as the 72-hour limit proposed by village staff. She said people could back the trucks out and park them again in the same spot to avoid a ticket.

Trustee Garrett Peck said he’d like to see a “cooling off” period to prevent people from leaving their parking spot and returning immediately to start a new time period.

Director of Planning Jonathan Proulx said there was enough information from the committee to prepare a document for review. Mayor Mike Collins and Trustee Jim Racich were absent.

12 3 charged after planning armed robbery

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – An attempted car burglary reportedly led Joliet police to foil a separate robbery attempt early Sunday on the far west side.

Capt. Jeff Allbert said police were called about 2 a.m. to the area near Hastings and Great Falls drives after neighbors reported seeing a man trying to break into a car parked outside.

“Officers responded to the area and [one of them] saw a car pull over to the side of the road and turn the lights off, so he waited and watched. After a few minutes it started up again and drove off,” Allbert said.

The officer began a traffic stop on the car near Gallatin and Lolo Pass drives, and noticed there were four people inside. When the car pulled over, the man who’d been sitting behind the driver opened the door and ran away.

“When other officers arrived, they approached the car and one of them saw what appeared to be a gun in plain sight on the floorboard of the backseat, so they ordered the other three men out of the car,” Allbert said.

Police searched the vehicle and learned the pistol on the floor was actually a BB gun, but also found “there was a sweatshirt covering a real gun,”

Allbert said. The search also reportedly uncovered ski masks and gloves, which led to more questions back at the police station.

“Interviews were conducted and officers Jacob L. learned the weapons, Trader masks and gloves were in the car because they’d planned to rob someone, but had been stopped before they got there,” Allbert said.

The description of the man who ran away Cody S. Kern matched that of the man who was seen attempting to break into the car, he added.

Jacob L. Trader, 31, of the 3400 block of Lockner Boulevard in Joliet; Matthew D. Cody S. Kern, 22, of the 900 block of Jasper Street MacDonald in Joliet; and Matthew D. MacDonald, 20, of the 1400 block of Raymond Avenue in Joliet, were arrested on charges of conspiring to commit armed robbery and booked into the Will County Jail. MacDonald also was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

NEW LENOX – New Lenox board trustees unanimously approved an amended ordinance Monday, which may have inadvertently surpassed action taken by Gov. Bruce Rauner in July making possession of small amounts of marijuana a civil rather than a criminal offense.

The amended New Lenox ordinance, which reduces possession of up to 30 grams of marijuana from a criminal misdemeanor charge to a citation with fines ranging from $100 to $200, was supposed to “mirror the new state law exactly,” Deputy Police Chief Bob Pawlisz said in a phone interview.

However, the state law only decriminalizes possession of less than 10 grams of marijuana, which was previously a Class B misdemeanor.

Possession of more than 10 and less than 30 grams of the drug is deemed a Class B misdemeanor under the state’s amended Cannabis Control Act, according to the Illinois General Assembly website.

With the new changes to the New Lenox ordinance, people with less than 10 grams of marijuana would be subject to a $100 fine, while those

found with more than 10 and less than 30 grams would be subject to a $200 fine. Possession of drug paraphernalia would be subject to a $100 fine.

Previously in New Lenox, possession of 2.5 to 10 grams of the drug was deemed a Class B misdemeanor and possession of 10 to 30 grams of the drug was deemed a Class A misdemeanor, said Pawlisz, who wrote the changes to the New Lenox amendment.

After it was pointed out, during a phone interview, that the New Lenox ordinance differs from the Illinois one, Pawlisz said the difference may have resulted from a “misunderstanding” and an “oversight” on his part and that he would go back to Police Chief Bob Sterba to decide whether any changes to the newly passed amended ordinance need to be made.

“My understanding is that we want to mirror the state law,” Pawlisz said.

There was no discussion at the meeting about the ordinance, which was approved as part of the board’s consent agenda, having been presented to the trustees for review in mid-September. At that time, Mayor Tim Baldermann made the only comment, clarifying that the ordinance pertained to possession only and not sale of marijuana.

Wunderlich doesn’t recall the exact words she spoke that night. But she saw how profoundly the rally and vigil affected the families of domestic violence victims. She joined the committee the following year.

Now, as the domestic abuse worker for the Joliet Police Department, Wunderlich especially wants to stay connected with the event. She feels Will County Take Back the Night has altered the way people view domestic violence.

“It’s brought the issue to the forefront. People talk about it more openly or publicly,” Wunderlich said. “Domestic violence is still happening but people are more inclined to report it.”

But that doesn’t bring back the victims.

With encouragement from McGuire, Savio temporarily dropped out of the nursing program, divorced Pe-

McGuire recalled the change in Savio when she returned to the program a few years later.

OBITUARIES BEVERLY J. ARDAUGH Beverly J. Ardaugh (nee Kreimeier), age 86, of Manhattan, passed away peacefully in her sleep with family at her side on Monday, October 10, 2016.

She is survived by her loving husband, William Ardaugh; her children, Barbara (Thomas) Bolek of Shorewood, Daniel (Cheryl) Ardaugh of Plainfield, Susan (John) Walsh of Elwood, John R. Ardaugh of Manhattan, and Carol (David) Mark of Lake Bluff; her sister, Nileta Roberts; her grandchildren, Anna (Max) Glen, Christopher (Jennifer) Bolek, Eileen (Brent) Mattox, Katherine Ardaugh, Brian Ardaugh, Patrick (Becky) Walsh, Daniel (Lauren) Walsh, Kathryn (Steve) Hunt, Kevin Ardaugh, John Ardaugh, Ryan Mark, Emily Mark; and eleven great grandchildren.

Preceded in death by her parents, Werner and Linda (nee Macher) Kreimeier; her sisters, Shirley Theobald, Ardyth Tromp, and Lorraine Bryant; and her brother, LaVerne Kreimeier.

Beverly was a lifelong resident of Manhattan.

She graduated class of ‘48 from Joliet Twp. H.S. and was a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed.

CHERYL GILL Cheryl “Gwen” Gill, age 58, went home to be with Her Lord on October 9, 2016 from Provena St. Joseph’s Hospital in Joliet, Illinois. She died from pneumonia and a severe lung infection after years of many physical problems and disability.

She is survived by her loving husband and caretaker of 23 years, Barry; one daughter, Sarah Stroh; and her mother, Trudy Lazenby.

She is survived also by her brother, Bill (Dana) Lazenby Jr. of Madison, AL., and their children, Brittany and Stephen.

She was preceded in death by her father, William R. Lazenby Sr. She was born in Joliet, Illinois, and educated in Joliet and Plainfield schools. She graduated from Illinois State University as an Industrial Hygienist and Chemist in 1979. She worked for EcoLab and Akzo Chemicals until her disability in 1998.

She was active leading Girl Scouts and working on church activities. She helped many people and organizations with their web sites and other computer needs.

She loved NASCAR racing, Christian music and the Denver Broncos. She was an avid music trivia buff and a doll collector for many years.

She was a loyal supporter of the National Parkinson Foundation and the Will County Humane Society.

Stacy was a graduate of Joliet Catholic Academy and received her Bachelors Degree from Northern Illinois University. She was an avid bowler as well as a Chicago Blackhawks, White Sox and Bears fan.

Celia Lynn Underwood Frazier departed to be with the Lord on October 8, 2016, at 3:10pm at Aurora Medical Center in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

She began her battle with cancer in Kosciusko, Mississippi and it led her on a loving journey through Westwego, Louisiana and Bristol, Wisconsin.

Celia was a traveler. She was born on January 10, 1951, in Caraway, Arkansas. She was raised in Lockport, Illinois, and spent a portion of her adulthood there. She later moved to Mississippi and spent her time between the Dossville and Singleton communities in Leake County and the city of Kosciusko.

Celia became a commercial truck driver in the late 1980’s and continued trucking until her retirement from America’s Catch in 2014. She was known by some as “Cricket”, her trucking handle. Many family members knew her as “Oogie”. She was later jokingly given the nickname “Easy Rider” when her illness necessitated the use of motorized carts for shopping.

Celia was a peaceful, loving soul. Her kind, unselfish nature was a rare find in this sometimes cruel world. She always had a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eyes. Some of her last spoken words were, “It’s ok. I’m going to be ok.” She remained strong until the end because she didn’t want anyone else to feel any pain.

Celia passed peacefully in the loving presence of her son and daughter-in-law (Joseph and Rachel Crocher, Bristol, Wisconsin); her daughter (Jody Crochetière, Westwego, Louisiana); her twin brother and sister-in-law (Cecil and Karen Underwood, Joliet, Illinois); and her niece (Stefanie Underwood Eschbach, Joliet, Illinois).

She is also survived by a daughter (Marie Shaw, Lockport, Illinois); her sister (Kay Edmaiston, Philadelphia, Mississippi); and four grandchildren whom she loved with all her heart (John Shaw, Joseph Shaw, Emma Crocher, and Quorthon Crocher). She leaves behind a countless number of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other loving family members and friends, as well as her furry feline companion, Molly.

She was preceded in death by her parents (Martin and Victoria Underwood); and her sister (Bonnie Fay Stefanek).

Per Celia’s wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial service. She simply wished for her children to return her ashes to nature and they will fulfill that wish.

In lieu of flowers or cards or any other

measures of sympathy, the family asks that you pay your respect by showing love to others. In Celia’s memory, please hold your loved ones close and tell them you love them. Give your pets a little scratch behind the ears and make sure you feed the next squirrel or chipmunk you see.

Joan M. Watters, age 87 years, passed away on Sunday, October 9, 2016 at her home following a long illness. She was born April 24, 1929 in Morris, IL, the daughter of the late Harold Percival Tucker and Mary Quinn Tucker.

Joan was a college graduate with a degree in music and taught piano in Florida for several years and later moving to Joliet and employed

by Associated Orthodontics for 25 years before retiring. She married Donald Watters in 1951 who preceded her in death in 1994 and also preceded in death by her brothers, Harold, Albert and Fred Tucker.

Joan was a loving mother to her daughters, Joan (Bernard) Siebenaler, Donna (late Jeff) Leahy, Teresa (Rick) Mason and Katherine (Ray) Rub; a devoted “Gram” to Keith (Taira) Siebenaler, Erin Casey, Kathleen Leahy, Colleen Leahy, Rick Mason IL, Danielle (Robert) Welsh, Mark Mason, Kimberly Mason, Grace (Thomas) Bourg, Anne Rub, Matthew Rub and dearest “Great-Gram” to James Casey, Rico Mason, Samuel Welsh, Isaac Welsh, Elliott Bourg, Kate Bourg and Henry Bourg; dear sister to Alice (Paul) Ainsley; and sister-in-law to Shirley Boero, Alice Mae Shuler and Pat Tucker. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate Joan’s life at the Church of St. Jude, 2212 McDonough St. Joliet on Friday, October 14, 2016 beginning at 9:30am with a memorial mass to be celebrated at 10:00 am. Inurnment to follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Beverly J. McEvilly (nee Loose), age 83, of Joliet, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, October 9, 2016, surrounded by her loving family.

Born December 19, 1932 in Joliet, she was the daughter of Gustav and Veronica (Dolegowski) Loose, and a January, 1951 graduate of Joliet Township High School.

Bev worked as Food Service Manager for Hufford Junior High School, retiring in 1995. She previously was employed by Mertz’s Catering and Illinois Bell Telephone Company.

She was an active member of the Cathedral of St. Raymond and past president of the Women’s Club. She was also a founding member of Our Lady of Angels Auxiliary. Bev also served as past president of Will County Food Service and was certified by the American School Food Service Association.

Bev will be remembered for her generosity, hospitality and excellent cooking skills. She loved to entertain and serving others always came first. She and her husband also enjoyed traveling together and visiting the casinos.

Most of all, she was devoted to her family and was proud of her children and grandchildren, faithfully attending all the activities and school events throughout their lives. One of her joys was organizing her garage sales.

Surviving are her beloved husband of 65 years, Robert K. McEvilly, who she married January 27, 1951. Also surviving are her devoted children, Linda (the late Chet) Minkalis of Naperville, Robert (the late Karen) McEvilly of Plainfield, Daniel (Denise) McEvilly of Joliet, Cindy (Andy) Tomala of Lemont, Thomas (Karen) McEvilly of Shorewood and William McEvilly of Joliet; 12 grandchildren, Melissa Minkalis, Scott and Todd McEvilly, Caitlyn and Kyle McEvilly, Andrew, John and Christina Tomala, Megan, Matthew and Eric McEvilly, and Kirstin Hobbs McEvilly; one great-granddaughter, Madison; and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are her husband’s sister-in-law, Anne McEvilly and her children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her siblings, Irene Hareld, Chuck Loose, Bernice Nieland, Robert Loose and Emily Rolando; a fond sister-in-law, Alyce Loose; and her husband’s siblings, James McEvilly and Charlene Obst.

Democrats can hardly complain about harsh ‘payback’ ads A harsh new TV ad slams Rep. John Bradley, D-Marion, for supporting a convicted sex offender. It’s described by the Republicans as a form of payback for all the sex offender-related ads that the House Democrats have been using against Republicans this year and in years past.

The ad begins with footage of a Chicago television anchorman saying “Federal prosecutors now accusing a former state representative of possessing child pornography.”

It then cuts to footage of convicted former state Rep. Keith Farnham, with an announcer saying, “Unspeakable abuse from a Springfield Democrat.”

Footage of Rep. Bradley appears on the screen: “But as Madigan’s top lieutenant in Democrat leadership, John Bradley stood by as the predator committed heinous crimes on his state computer.”

“The sex assault victim was an infant,” the TV anchorman is heard saying. “Yet Bradley stroked a check to the predator’s campaign just to strengthen Madigan’s power. Cowardice so despicable you have to wonder, how does John Bradley sleep at night?”

Bradley did contribute $1,000 to Farnham, but that was three years before Farnham’s arrest. Nobody had a clue what was going on with Farnham back then. Farnham is currently serving an eight-year prison sentence for trafficking in child pornography.

He’s also been sued by two minors who

The Democrats have been airing TV and radio ads and sending mailers blasting Republicans on this same basic issue. Republican Jerry Long, who is running against appointed Rep. Andy Skoog, D-LaSalle, was hit for renting one of his houses to a convicted sex offender. Republican Lindsay Parkhurst, who is challenging Rep. Kate Cloonen, D-Kankakee, was blasted for working to “keep a predator [of a 5-year old child] out of jail.” Parkhurst is a defense attorney.

Several other GOP candidates have been whacked for opposing House Speaker Michael Madigan’s failed budget proposal, although not in those words, of course. The Madigan proposal included funding for various programs related to sex offenders, so they’re being hit with that. Bradley’s own opponent, Dave Severin, got the treatment, as did others.

And the GOP hit is spreading to other districts.

“Yingling’s Dirty Money,” blares the headline on a new Republican mailer, which features an image of a little girl with her head in her hands

just behind a photo of Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake. Yingling’s GOP opponent was hit with a Democratic sex offender mailer earlier.

“Sam Yingling has taken over $1,000,000 in campaign contributions from the same political groups who bankrolled a politician that pleaded guilty to horrific child pornography crimes,” the mailer claims, using very similar language to a recent House Democratic robocall that linked state Rep. Carol Sente’s current Republican opponent to Dan Proft’s Liberty Principles PAC. “The candidate was sued by victims saying they were repeatedly ‘raped and sexually assaulted’ to produce child pornography,” the Republican mailer claims. “Sam Yingling won’t give back the political donations.”

The mailer then excerpts a news report: “Depictions of sadistic and sexual abuse of children as young as 6 months old.”

Ugh. The House Democrats are a pretty predictable bunch. If something works, they use it over and over again anywhere and everywhere they can until it stops working. This sort of slam helped keep Sente in office two years ago when the Democrats used a variation of the sexual predator “issue” against her GOP challenger, Leslie Munger.

Munger, who went on to be appointed state comptroller, was whacked for

saying she opposed unfunded state mandates, which the Democrats twisted to mean she was opposed to school mandates that help shield children from predators.

Linking an opponent to child sexual predators is about the lowest thing anybody can do in politics. But it’s a type of tactic as old as negative campaigning itself.

Almost everybody has heard the legend about Lyndon Baines Johnson wanting to spread a rumor that his opponent was engaging in, um, marital relations with a member of the porcine persuasion. When told he couldn’t do that because it wasn’t true, Johnson is said to have replied that he knew the claim was false, he just wanted to make his opponent deny it.

Two years ago, the Munger campaign fell for the old LBJ trick and stirred up a media storm by flatly denying that she wanted to protect child predators. Munger lost that race during an otherwise favorable Republican year.

If the “issue” actually turns out to be an effective counterattack for the Republicans, the House Democrats may finally stop using it. One can only hope.

In the meantime, Democrats can hardly complain.

On display for all to see, Donald Trump proved what his colleagues, co-workers and observers noticed for years – Trump is not too bright! He took the bait Hillary Clinton set for him in the debate and showed that he can’t think on his feet. If that wasn’t enough, he continued the idiocy four more days.

Those who have worked with Trump in the past such as Tony Schwartz, the ghostwriter of “The Art of the Deal,” claims Trump has a short attention span, does not read books and a Trump presidency could “lead to the end of civilization.” In John O’Donnell’s 1991 book, “Trumped!” Donald’s former executive writes that Trump had trouble retaining information regarding day-to-day operations at the casinos.

Even Gary Johnson, despite being jinxed with not one but two “Aleppo moments” where his brain went totally blank, so far received six major newspaper endorsements. Only a handful of publica-

tions have endorsed Trump, including the National Enquirer, the New York Post, and the New York Observer (whose publisher is Trump’s son-in-law).

Hillary, on the other hand has been endorsed by 84 major newspapers – two of which, the Arizona Republic and the San Diego Union Tribune, have never before in their history endorsed a Democrat.

No wonder Putin insists he never called Trump “brilliant.” His exact translation from Russian to English is “flamboyant.” Putin is correct, Trump’s complicated business dealings are not a result of brilliance on Trump’s part. Trump’s expensive attorneys and accountants advise him of possible strategies – legal, illegal and somewhere in-between, and it is Trump’s lack of a moral compass which allows him to choose the despicable path that a decent person would never travel.

Smart businessman not so much – Trump’s trial for fraud and racketeering starts Nov. 28.

SPRINGFIELD – Minooka’s girls golf team shot a 363 to take sixth place at the Class 2A Sacred Heart-Griffin Sectional, but none of its athletes was able to shoot an 87, which was the cutoff for individual qualifiers for this weekend’s state finals in Forsyth.

The Indians’ best score was an 88, which was posted by Miranda Sharp.

Maddie Erickson finished with an 89, Rachel Kirkolis shot a 90 and Hailey Arlis added a 96. Galesburg edged O’Fallon, 334-337, for the title, while Galesburg’s Kirsten Osborn was the medalist with a 78.

I’m very excited that I’ve been able to compete down there for all four years. I started off my round very well, so that gave me a little bit of comfort. It just shows me that I can go really well and hopefully I can do that at state.

“I’ve been very consistent and played very well through the season so I hope to do that at state. This year I really don’t having thing holding me back, I can kind of go out and play free and hopefully I can get a top 10. I’ll just try to do my best and see where that gets me.”

Gromala will be joined at state by Lincoln-Way Central sophomores Grace Curran and Brianne Bolden, as well by Lincoln-Way East junior Hannah Hill.

“I’m so excited,” Curran said. “This is definitely going to be a new experience. This was the main goal through the year, and I’m just so happy to have gotten here. I was definitely nervous this morning on the first tee, and Bri was trying to calm me down.

“But after I got out there, I knew I put in all of the work, so all I needed to

do was execute the shots. I’m definitely so excited to be down there with Bri, it obviously would not be the same without her.”

Bolden, who will be her making her second state trip, opened with threestraight bogeys before parring the last 15 holes, to tie for seventh place.

Leet was named Great Lakes Valley Conference Runner of the Week after placing fourth at the Lewis’ Conference Crossover with an 8,000-meter time of 24 minutes, 44.74 seconds. He finished 14 seconds out of the lead and was the top GLVC finisher among 184 runners.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL Alles honored: For the third time

this season, St. Francis junior Leah Alles (Providence) was named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Defender of the Week.

Alles averaged 7.25 digs a set as USF (15-7, 9-1 CCAC) swept three matches at the CCAC Crossover. She collected 32 digs against Robert Morris University Illinois and 39 against Saint Xavier. Alles ranks seventh in the NAIA in digs per set (5.96) and 10th in total digs (495). always happen that way.

Despite seeing his team fall a bit short in the team race, Knights coach Brian Shannon was pleased with a fifth at the rugged sectional to conclude a memorable season.

“We knew that the top three teams are in a different class and we’re on the right path to that,” Shannon said. “Ten years ago when I took over, we had a really good team. But then we started to get one person to the regional, then three and now we’ve won back-to-back regionals and got one person to state last year and then two this year. This makes our team hungrier and makes all us of want to work harder. We’re headed in the right direction.”

The other area qualifier was Hill, who had nines of 36 and 43, to earn her first state trip.

Falling two strokes shy of qualifying with an 81 was Lockport’s Rachel Kuzel.

Other top scores for area athletes were posted by Lincoln-Way East’s Claire Moutvic (86) and Laura Lewis (87), Lincoln-Way West’s Hannah Slater (87), Plainfield North’s MacKenzie Wolendowski (87), Providence’s Isabella Corso (88) and Lockport’s Mckenzie Ebel (89).

Rounding out the top-50 (along with ties) in the field were Lincoln-Way Central’s Taylor Miron (91), Providence’s Ellie Bilotta (91), Lemont’s Kara Karbarz (91), Lincoln-Way West’s Sarah Scheer (92), Plainfield South’s Mandi Granato (92) and Lemont’s Maggie Micetich (92), who was a state qualifier last year.

The key numbers are 13 and 18.

If the high school football playoffs were beginning now, the Joliet area would have 13 qualifiers. However, with two weeks remaining in the regular season, five others currently on the outside looking in have a chance to play their way in.

The breakdown comes courtesy of the IHSA’s weekly playoff outlook.

Week 7 usually is a good indicator of how things will shake out 10 days from now, when the final field is determined.

A 4-3 record now and a 5-4 record in Week 9 tend to fall fairly close to each other on the qualifying grid.

The classification breakdown should be close to what it is now but will change somewhat. The scale usually slides up or down depending on the relative number of large schools and small schools that sneak in and drop out.

Below is a rundown on how things look for our area hopefuls with seven weeks in the books. My best guess is the cutoff for playoff points (opponent victories) for teams finishing 5-4 will be around 38, give or take one.

In the Southwest Prairie Conference, with a 10-team round-robin schedule, 5-4 teams will finish with 40 points. Playoff points will affect seeding within each qualifying record. In the SPC, we know that 6-3 teams will have 39 points, 7-2 teams 38, 8-1 teams 37 and a 9-0 teams 36.

Class 8A (enrollments 2,321 to 8,109):

Lincoln-Way East (6-1, 35 playoff points, 2,891 enrollment) is in. Lockport (5-2, 30, 3,594) and Joliet West (5-2, 30, 3,127) should be good, but another victory would not hurt. Lockport is at Stagg and Joliet West is at Joliet Central this weekend.

Plainfield South (4-3, 31, 2,593) should qualify with one more victory. The Cougars host Oswego on Friday and visit Minooka in Week 9.

Bolingbrook (3-4, 41, 3,549) must beat Thornwood and Homewood-Flossmoor, and Minooka (3-4, 32, 2,691) must beat Oswego East and Plainfield South.

Class 7A (1,831 to 2,307): Lincoln-Way Central (5-2, 31, 2,142) and Plainfield North (5-2, 30, 2,269) should be in and are in position to finish 6-3 or 7-2.

There’s a chance North could play in Class 8A, but Class 7A is more likely.

Lincoln-Way West (4-3, 30, 1,913), which would be a small Class 7A qualifier, could get in with one win but would like to finish with victories over Thornridge and Sandburg.

Class 6A (1,330 to 1,826): Lemont (7-0, 33, 1,377) is in position to go 9-0 and be a

No. 1 seed. The Indians are looking like a small Class 6A team but still could slip down to Class 5A. The only hope for Providence (3-4, 46, 1,709.40) is winning at Loyola and at home against Mount Carmel. Too bad for the Celtics’ sake that playing a tough schedule counts for nothing more than playoff points.

Providence has 46, which is tied with 0-7 Conant for the most in the state.

Class 5A (803 to 1,317): Morris (5-2, 32, 870) probably is in but would like to win two more. The Redskins, who are more likely to be a small Class 5A qualifier than a large Class 4A team, finish with home games against Sycamore and Geneseo.

Class 4A (521 to 796): Coal City (4-3, 36, 623) and Peotone (4-3, 35, 545) will be in with one more victory. However, Peotone visits Coal City this week and both have tough assignments in Week 9 – Coal City at Wilmington and Peotone

home against Herscher.

Class 3A (386 to 520): Wilmington (7-0, 29, 484) is in and Seneca (4-3, 31, 445) would be in, but without much wiggle room. The Irish are at Herscher and then home against Sandwich.

Dwight (4-3, 28, 463) could miss out on playoff points unless the Trojans beat Salt Fork and Paxton-Buckley-Loda. Reed-Custer (3-4, 36, 387) would be

in only if it can win at home over Plano and at Manteno.

A prediction on playoff qualifiers? We will have Lincoln-Way East, Lockport and Joliet West in Class 8A; Lincoln-Way Central, Lincoln-Way West and Plainfield North in Class 7A; Lemont in Class 6A; Morris in Class 5A; the Coal City-Peotone winner in Class 4A, and Wilmington in Class 3A. That’s 10, and whether we go up from there largely will depend on whether Plainfield South, Seneca and/or Dwight qualify.

We also would enjoy seeing Bolingbrook, Minooka, Providence, ReedCuster and the Coal City-Peotone loser get in, but it will take a monumental effort on the part of each to make it happen.

Utley’s single lifts Dodgers over Nats to force Game 5

The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Chase Utley singled home the tiebreaking run with two outs in the eighth inning after the Dodgers’ bullpen faltered in relief of Clayton Kershaw, and Los Angeles avoided elimination Tuesday with a 6-5 victory over the Washington Nationals that forced a deciding Game 5 in their NL playoff.

Kenley Jansen worked the ninth for a save, one day after giving up four late runs during Los Angeles’ loss in Game 3.

Game 5 is Thursday in Washington, with 20-game winner Max Scherzer set to pitch for the Nationals.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he will use left-hander Rich Hill and rookie Julio Urias, but did not announce which one will start.

After failing to close out the Dodgers on the road, Washington will get one more chance Thursday to win a playoff series for the first time since the franchise relocated from Montreal. NL East champions in three of the past five years, the Nationals were unable to ad-

vance during their two previous trips to the postseason.

Adrian Gonzalez hit a two-run homer for the Dodgers, who turned to Kershaw on three days’ rest to salvage their season.

The score was tied 5-all with two outs in the eighth when Andrew Toles got hit by a pitch from loser Blake Treinen. Pinch-hitter Andre Ethier followed with a single to left and Utley singled to right, scoring Toles from second for a 6-5 lead.

Trailing 5-2 in the seventh, the Nats had runners on first and second against Kershaw with two outs. The crowd chanted Kershaw’s name before Bryce Harper drew an eight-pitch walk to load the bases and chase Kershaw, who walked off with his head down. He sat alone in the dugout with his head resting on his right hand.

That’s when the bullpen nearly gave the game away.

Pedro Baez came in and hit Jayson Werth with his only pitch, forcing in a run to make it 5-3. Baez got booed off the field.

Daniel Murphy’s single off Luis Avilan dropped between Toles and Joc

Pederson in left-center field, scoring two runs to tie it at 5. Avilan also heard boos.

Joe Blanton, who earned the win, retired Anthony Rendon on a swinging strikeout to end the inning.

Desperate to avoid another early playoff exit, the Dodgers turned to Kershaw, their three-time NL Cy Young Award winner who won Game 1 last Friday despite going just five innings and allowing three runs.

This time, he was charged with five runs and seven hits in 62/3 innings. He struck out 11 – equaling his second-best postseason total – and walked two.

The left-hander was limited to 149 innings while compiling a 1.69 ERA during the regular season. He missed 21/2 months with a mildly herniated disk in his back.

Kershaw opened the game by giving up a leadoff single and a walk before Murphy’s RBI single.

The Dodgers took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning on Gonzalez’s tworun shot that scored Justin Turner, who was hit by a pitch from Joe Ross.

Werth’s RBI single tied it 2-all in the third.

Los Angeles again answered in the bottom of the inning, with Kershaw getting the rally going with a double to left field. He slid into second and clenched his fists in a rare show of emotion.

Kershaw scored on Turner’s single with two outs. Pederson got hit by a pitch from Ross with the bases loaded, forcing in Turner Ross made his postseason debut for the Nationals, giving up four runs and three hits in 22/3 innings. The 23-yearold right-hander struck out three and walked two. He hasn’t pitched more than four innings since coming off the disabled list on Sept. 18.

Trainer’s room: Nationals RHP Stephen Strasburg experienced discomfort in his right elbow during a bullpen session Monday at Dodger Stadium.

He threw 30 or 31 pitches instead of the scheduled 35. Strasburg has been out since tearing the pronator tendon in his elbow on Sept. 7.

Manager Dusty Baker said Strasburg was throwing the ball “very good” and he’s not concerned about his progress. Strasburg has said he would try to return this season if the Nationals advance to the NLCS.

Woeful 1-4 Bears look to eliminate inconsistency The ASSOCIATED PRESS LAKE FOREST– Brian Hoyer’s three straight 300-yard passing efforts suggest the quarterback position for the Chicago Bears is in good hands until quarterback Jay Cutler returns from a thumb sprain.

Inconsistency in other areas continues to plague the Bears (1-4) after their 29-23 loss Sunday at Indianapolis.

Linebacker Willie Young said coach John Fox addressed the issue in talking with players ahead of a home game Sunday against Jacksonville.

“Just to sum up his message to the team is that we’re so close,” Young said. “I guess every game, wins or losses, come down to a few plays. And to see how close we are is a lot of motivation to see that maybe if we can just avoid having this mistake, this offsides penalty, this dropped ball.”

Hoyer’s season passer rating climbed to 108.5 against the Colts, though he missed seeing wide receiver Alshon Jeffery open in the end zone on the Bears’ final offensive play, an incompletion. The Bears offense produced 522 yards, its most for a game since Mike Ditka’s 1989 team. But the offense sputtered in the red zone with one touchdown in three tries.

Wide receiver Cameron Meredith filled in well for injured Kevin White with nine catches for 130 yards, then fumbled the ball in the fourth quarter.

“I think we’ve gotten beter at moving the ball offensively, distributing it,” Fox said. “I think our timing’s been

better. All in all, though, we still need to capitalize on more points.”

Fox said he has no timetable yet on when or if Cutler will be back.

“Right now, that’s not a reality, so I don’t like to get too much into that,” Fox said. “But I think Brian’s played well. Unfortunately, we didn’t play quite well enough.”

Fox chastised the media for questioning whether Hoyer should have thrown the final pass Jeffery’s way instead of incomplete to Meredith.

“It could have been an option,” he said. “I don’t know that you can be super-critical. When you’re out there playing quarterback it looks a little different than when you’re up in the press box having hot dogs.”

The Bears’ defense hampered the Colts’ running game and at times harassed quarterback Andrew Luck. The defense had five sacks, but Luck still threw two touchdown passes and led the victory.

“Our mindset was made up by how we wanted to get to the quarterback and that’s what we all sold out to do that,” Young said. “And from this point on, we’ve just got to be consistent in doing it.”

Notes: The pass rush could get better if Pernell McPhee returns from the physically unable to perform list.

McPhee has been out with a knee injury. However, Fox said that won’t occur until the week of the Oct. 22 Green Bay game at the earliest. McPhee can begin a three-week evaluation process at practice starting this Friday.

Forced to run two races on Sunday, both NASCAR and Charlotte Motor Speedway somehow managed to pull off a miracle. They got a pair of decent races on a perfect North Carolina fall afternoon – not great races, but good enough that the Chase now warrants some chatter.

How do you treat arthritis in your feet?

The most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative arthritis.

It affects about half of all arthritis sufferers.

When it strikes the feet, it can be particularly distressing. Although there is little soft tissue swelling, joints often become enlarged, stiff and painful. Anti-inflammatory drugs may be prescribed for the pain, and certain exercises can relieve some of the pressure by strengthening muscles around the joints.

Waling and rolling an empty soft drink bottle under the foot are often useful techniques.

Your doctor may also perform ultrasound or heat treatments. For more advanced, debilitating cases, surgery may be recommended to remove bony particles or replace the joint with an artificial implant.

P.S. Two people with similar joint degeneration can have totally different symptoms, such as intense pain or no pain at all.

Chase Elliott was collected in that accident. Then Hamlin had an engine failure while running second late in the race.

None of that is the kind of “drama” that has driven the Chase the last two years. That excitement centered around Brad Keselowski getting tackled, Keselowski getting punched and Matt Kenseth’s running feud with Logano.

Yes, those are the instances that make NASCAR a watercooler conversation on Monday mornings, but the drivers absolutely abhor the sensationalism and scrutiny that comes with such displays of emotion or personality.

So now they’ve provided an opportunity to really look at the racing and wonder how each team will react in this suddenly intense Chase.

The first round didn’t knock anyone’s socks off – two Truex wins and

a Harvick victory – and no shocking elimination. Everyone probably wanted Tony Stewart to make it out of the first round, but nobody thought he was running well enough to do it. Stewart getting knocked out was hardly the same level of stunner as Jimmie Johnson’s first-round elimination a year ago.

But after Sunday’s opener, this round has the potential for some serious nail-biting over the next two weeks. Some really big names are going to be eliminated at Talladega Superspeedway, where the Chase field will be trimmed from 12 to eight drivers.

Free from worry is Johnson, the somewhat surprise winner on Sunday. It was his eighth victory at the Hendrick Motorsports home track, but Johnson has been a bit overlooked the last three years. He’d failed in the first two years of the elimination format to get past the second round, and there’s been no reason to think that Hendrick Motorsports can compete with the four Toyota drivers or Harvick.

But a summer of hard work has suddenly put Hendrick on the radar, and both Johnson and teammate El-

liott have turned it up in the Chase.

Now, Johnson has a spot in the round of eight, and his sights squarely on a seventh championship.

History has shown that Johnson dominance does little for the NASCAR fan base, and there’s been a total lack of appreciation for his five consecutive championships and six overall.

But his win at Charlotte felt different.

There was a sense that seven might actually be doable, and Johnson’s pursuit of Richard Petty and Dale

Earnhardt in the record books could be embraced this year.

Whether Johnson moves your meter, his hunt for that seventh title is surely more entertaining that which driver fails the laser inspection each week.

So thank you, NASCAR. Thank you, Chase teams. Thank you, Charlotte Motor Speedway. Thank you, Jimmie Johnson.

Syl’s Restaurant & Lounge is Rockdale’s ‘hidden gem’ of a steakhouse

By Mystery Diner ROCKDALE – Syl’s Restaurant & Lounge in Rockdale has a long history in the Joliet area.

Its website says it was founded in 1946 as a small family business that grew into a full-service steakhouse.

In addition to its prime rib and steak, Syl’s, dubbed as a “hidden gem,” is mostly known for its seafood, chicken, cold water lobster, jumbo pork chops, pasta, burgers and double-baked potatoes.

With more than 45 years of restaurant industry experience, the current owners “pride themselves on the quality of their food and service” and “are passionate about food,” the website also states.

A recent visit to the restaurant by myself and a friend proved those words. At another’s suggestion, we made reservations. We were glad we did. We arrived early, but as we dined, the restaurant filled up.

Soft. Muted. Elegant. These were my first impressions. The atmosphere was mellow and serene – from the cloth tablecloths to the lighted mantle displays – the perfect setting for a slow, relaxed dining experience.

Our host greeted us with respect and led us to a table. We immediately received a pitcher of ice water for our table and a wonderfully friendly server named Franny took our beverage order – a soft drink for my friend and coffee for me.

Franny gave us plenty of time to peruse the menu. We split two appetizers: a large grilled portobello mushroom topped with tomato sauce and a bowl of French onion soup. The mushroom was meaty and the tomato sauce was rich and garlicky.

The French onion soup was everything an onion soup should be. The onions were tender but not soft; the rich beef broth was perfectly seasoned (not too salty) and had a hint of sweetness from the caramelized onions.

Both varieties of bread in the napkin-lined basket appeared to be homemade: fresh, warm, and served with butter and sour cream on the side.

The honey wheat had a melt-in-yourmouth soft texture; the French bread was soft on the inside and crusty on the outside.

Since Syl’s is a steakhouse, I ordered a medium rare petite steak, but my friend insisted the best way to judge the quality of any restaurant is by its burger. Franny verified the burgers are hand ground, so my friend ordered the burger medium

Both entrees arrived precisely as we ordered them. The burger was served on a French roll. My friend proclaimed the burger as the best he’d had in the Joliet area and one of the best ever: tender, juicy, well-seasoned. The fries were crispy and golden on the outside and hot and fluffy on the inside. The coleslaw had the perfect meld of sweet, salty and acidic. It left my friend wanting more.

My salad was a standard dinner salad, but the greens had a fresh crunch to them. Grilled mushrooms and an onion ring accompanied my steak, which was a perfect medium rare, exactly as I like it. The potato was dry and fluffy. The onion ring was crispy and golden on the outside, tender on the inside with, again, the

correct amount of seasoning. The mushrooms were grilled with minced garlic to a rich brown.

For dessert (as if we had room for dessert, but who could pass it up?), we “split” a chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream, chocolate chunks and chocolate ganache (melted chocolate with heavy cream folded into it).

“Split” actually meant two generous portions on two separate plates!

Syl’s does offer specials, and its menus – regular dinner, luncheon, dinner banquet, hors d’oeuvre banquet and catering – are posted on its website.

One final comment about the excellent service, since that enhanced the entire experience. Franny knew exactly how to pace each course. She provided plenty of time to enjoy our food, and we never felt rushed. All

in all, my friend and I spent about two hours at Syl’s. Each minute was definitely worth it.

Allergy shots effective for most Dear Dr. K: I’m plagued by seasonal allergies. Should I consider immunotherapy?

Dear Reader: Many people know all too well the misery of allergies – the sneezing, runny nose, postnasal drip, watery eyes and itchy throat. They try to fight back with allergy medications. But immunotherapy, also known as allergy shots, may be a better option.

I spoke to my colleague Dr. Paul Hesterberg, an instructor in medicine in the allergy and clinical immunology unit at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. He noted people often resist allergy shots because they fear injections and turn to them only as a last resort. But the shots can be an effective way to control symptoms that interfere with daily life.

They also can help reduce dependence on allergy drugs.

Allergy shots will not eliminate your allergy. They change your immune response to better tolerate it. Medication treats symptoms; allergy shots help prevent the symptoms from occurring in the first place.

The shots are given with a small needle, just under the skin – not deep into the muscle. Sometimes there is temporary tenderness and redness at the spot where the shot has been given. On very rare occasions, there is a serious reaction called anaphylaxis that can cause a drop in blood pressure and breathing problems.

A recent study of adults ages 65 to 75 found allergy shots reduced symptoms by 55 percent after three years of therapy. The study also showed the amount of medication this group needed to relieve symptoms dropped by 64 percent.

Shots are available for certain pollens, dust mites, mold, cat and dog hair and insect stings. There is no proof they work for food or drug allergies.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Shots are done in two phases: buildup and maintenance. The buildup phase involves receiving increasing amounts of the allergen – the substance that causes the allergic reaction – once or twice a week.

This phase lasts three to six months.

The maintenance phase begins after reaching the full dosage. During this period, patients are injected on a monthly basis for up to three to five years.

As with any kind of treatment, allergy shots may not work for everyone, and they are not recommended for people with certain risk factors. These include some types of heart disease and severe, poorly controlled asthma.

If you are uneasy about injections, immunotherapy options that can be taken by mouth are available for certain allergies. They also are less likely to cause side effects than allergy shots and can be taken at home after your first dose in the doctor’s office. Oral immunotherapy is fairly new, and it still is not clear which therapy – injected or oral – is better.

The main question most of my patients ask when considering allergy immunotherapy is how much time it will take. As you can see from my description of what’s involved, it does involve many visits to the doctor’s office. Only you can trade off the amount of time it is going to take against the importance of reducing your allergy symptoms.

DEAR ABBY Four years ago, after three years Jeanne of marriage, I Phillips had a brief affair and was caught by my husband, who is a doctor. What should South do in six hearts after West leads the spade nine?

When North raised hearts, South decided that slam could be anything from hopeless to laydown, and seeing no way to find out for sure, he went for the jackpot.

South starts with 11 top tricks: seven hearts, one diamond, two clubs and a club ruff on the board. So, naturally, he thought that he needed the diamond finesse. However, East’s bid had reduced the chance that that finesse would succeed. All of a sudden, he saw the winning line, which just assumed that West had led top of nothing.

Instead of making the natural play of covering the spade nine with dummy’s jack, South played a low spade and ruffed in his hand.

He drew trumps and eliminated the clubs (king, ace, ruff). Then he led the spade queen from the board, and when East covered with his ace, declarer discarded a diamond. What could East have done now?

If he led a club (conceding a ruffand-sluff) or a diamond (into the acequeen), South would have claimed.

When he tried exiting with a low spade, declarer pitched another diamond from his hand and won with dummy’s jack. Slam bid and made, naturally.
