Joliet may make new connections with train station

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The future Joliet train station may be behind schedule, but its potential significance has not been forgotten.

The groundbreaking ceremony last week brought the state transportation secretary and Metra executive director to Joliet, signs that the upgrade of the public transit facilities matter beyond the city limits.

“It shows commitment to invest in transportation not only for people in Joliet, but for travelers in the Chicago region,” Metra Executive Director Don Orseno said of the $50 million project.

The Chicago connection also was noticed by a company that Joliet officials hope to bring to the city, Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said.

Discussing a recent meeting with representatives from the company, O’Dekirk said, “One of the things that they cited is the new multimodal project and Joliet’s proximity to Chicago.”

The Joliet Gateway Center, the name given to the public transit center being created downtown, is called a multimodal project because it has been designed to

accommodate multiple modes of public transportation.

The idea since the project was first announced in 2010 has been to put all public transit in one spot, thus making it easier to get around without a car. Gateway Center was envisioned as a hub for interstate rail, commuter trains, local buses, tour buses arriving from other cities, taxi cabs and

even bicyclists who could put their bikes on trains as they travel between cities.

Multimodal ambitions, however, have been sidetracked by funding issues.

New editor named for The Herald-News SHAW MEDIA JOLIET – Shaw Media has announced that Jon Styf will be the new editor of The Herald-News, Morris Herald-News and Herald Life.

Styf replaces Kate Schott, who has accepted a job as opinion page editor at the State Journal-Register in Springfield.

Schott, who has been editor of Shaw Media’s publications in Joliet and Morris since January 2014, will remain in the position through Friday. Styf is expected to start as editor on Oct. 17.

“Kate has done a great job since arriving at The Herald-News in January 2014,” General Manager Steve Vanisko said.

JOLIET – Shannon Wolf of Joliet has fond memories of playing baseball with the Belmont Little League.

He especially loved hearing his name on the public address system.

But that’s a thrill today’s Belmont Little Leaguers don’t get.

The PA system doesn’t work on any of the three fields, Wolf said. Neither do the scoreboards. The dugouts on the older fields are so bad that if it rains, the players are “sitting ducks.”

And don’t get Wolf, second vice president of the league and former coach as well as player, started on the bleachers.

“They’re old,” Wolf said. “They’ve been there a long time. Most of them look like they did when I played here.

Obviously they replaced a board here and there and did some painting, but they need to be replaced.”

Wolf’s concerns go beyond the aesthetics.

“A 2-year-old fell off the bleachers last year,” Wolf said. “He just leaned back and fell. There’s no backing on

those things. He was OK, but his lip got busted pretty good.”

Bringing two of the fields up to speed will cost about $10,000, Wolf estimated.

A newer field, a former softball field where the 13- and 14-year-olds play, is in fairly good shape, but it does need a scoreboard and PA system, Wolf added.

And that’s not counting the fact that the league is in debt. Many of the kids come from low-income backgrounds and can’t afford to pay to play, Wolf said.

To that end, Belmont Little League will hold a 12-inch Softball Competitive Tournament and a 16-inch Softball Recreational Tournament on Saturday. The fundraiser won’t solve all the financial woes, Wolf said. But it’s a start.

Like Wolf, Fidel Nino of Joliet, a former league coach and newly elected board president who also played on the league as a boy, wants the 200 kids that the league serves to have the same good memories he and Wolf have.

“We’re just trying to keep the park alive, to keep it open,” Nino said. “It’s rough out there on the streets. I want

D-202 parenting network meets this week

fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield District 202 officials are inviting parents to attend the Plainfield Parent Community Network that will support them with common parenting needs.

The meeting will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday through Door G at the auditorium of Plainfield Central High School, 24120 W. Fort Beggs Drive.

PPCN is the “brainchild of several District 202 social workers, special education administrators and counselors,” according to a Plainfield District 202 news release. It is not only for families of students with special needs.

Information at the meeting will be presented in 20-minute segments with discussion, according to the district. It

is modeled after TED Talk segments.

Tim Albores, the district’s high school student services director, stated in a news release that the district wanted to do something more at the district or community level “to provide supportive services and skills to give all parents a little extra help with some global parenting needs.”

“This group is intended to be a community resource for everyone,” Albores said.

Two PPCN meetings are planned for this year. They will be overseen by a committee of district administrators, principals, counselors and community members.

offices in north and south Plainfield and north Naperville.

Russo has more than 15 years of clinical experience and has worked in youth outreach as well as administration of local mental health facilities, according to a flier for the PPCN event.

“Being able to deal with failure now will in turn help them be successful when they are older,” Albores stated.

Todd Fink – a musician, author, speaker, counselor and meditation student – also will be at the meeting to discuss the importance of mindfulness.

According to the meeting flier, Fink works “fervently to educate people and communities” on the benefits of healthy and mindful living. He draws on experience as a health care professional, artist and wellness presenter.

Belmont Little League has been around since 1951, Nino said, and it would be a shame to see it go. Not because of its long history, but because of the kids it serves.

“If we don’t keep it open, we’re going to lose kids to the streets,” said Andrew Velasquez of Joliet, who’s coached Belmont Little League since 1980.

Velasquez never played baseball with the league, nor did he have children who participated. Velasquez simply likes baseball and felt he should give back to his community.

“It was totally different back then,” Velasquez said. “We had 15, 18 kids on a team. We even had a waiting list of kids wanting to play. Nowadays, kids would rather be inside playing video games.”

But playing ball is good for the kids.

It not only gets them exercising outside, but they also become part of a positive group that supports each other.

“This is a family atmosphere,” Velasquez said.

Velasquez bemoans the league’s lack of amenities, but he feels that needs changing.

“Where else can the kids go?” Velasquez said. “We have to keep it going.”

“The moms just drop off the kids and leave. Where are the dads at?” Nino

said. “If I can dedicate my time, I know they can.”

Wolf hopes the community will support the board’s efforts – for the kids’ sake.

“I just remember when there was

a lot more participation. It felt more alive,” Wolf said. “The concession stand had a lot more action. But attendance is down. A lot of it might be the way the fields are. They’re not as exciting as they used to be.”

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – The Coal City Fire Protection District is once again operating from two fire stations after construction has been completed on repairs from the June 22 EF3 tornado.

Station 2 was damaged when the tornado wrapped a metal tower around the firehouse, piercing through the roof and into a water storage tank. The facility reopened at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 3 and was available for calls immediately, Coal City Fire District public information officer Lt. Nick Doerfler said last week.

“We’ve already responded to several calls,” he said Oct. 6.

While workers last week were finishing the wiring and data connections in the training room, staff was busy putting things away in their designated areas.

“The move-in is done. We are now unpacking a lot of things and getting it back where it was,” Doerfler said.

“Some of the newer staff has never worked out of this station before, so not everyone knows where it all goes.”

He said it’s a neat experience to watch the newer staff, who are excited for the new station, much like he and

The department also has relocated a few of the rooms and adjusted for offices, as well as installed a tornado

room along an outside wall.

Doerfler said the issue with the room firefighters took shelter in the night of the tornado is that if that doorway was blocked, there would be no other way out. Now, if need be, they could chip their way through the outer wall, leading them to safety and allowing them to respond.

“We’re ecstatic to be back in the building and able to serve the people of Coal City,” Doerfler said. “This will also shorten response time to those who sit on the other side of the railroad tracks from Station 1.”

Laser treatment and photodynamic therapy (PDT) treatment is used. PDT is used to reduce the risk of moderate to severe vision loss in patients with a few very specific forms of “wet” macular degeneration. Other experimental treatments that are being investigated include, intraocular anti-neovascular injections and the insertion of a “retinal chip” to restore vision loss.

Joliet Park District eyes artificial turf for softball fields

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Park District is considering a switch to artificial turf at its softball fields.

The park district replaced grass with field turf at Memorial Stadium in 2010, a move designed to accommodate more events while reducing maintenance costs.

Installing field turf at the six softball fields at the Inwood Sports Complex would be done for some of the same reasons, said Tom Carstens, executive director of the Joliet Park District.

The fields would be available yearround with lower maintenance costs, Carstens said.

“We know it’s going to be very costly to do that,” he said. “If we were to do that, we would do that in a phased

route.”

No timetable has been established, and the park district has not decided whether to move forward, he said.

Using artificial turf for softball fields is unusual, Carstens said. But other park districts have done it.

Currently the softball fields have grass outfields but limestone infields.

The park district is looking at turning them into all-turf.

Meanwhile, the park board at its Sept. 26 meeting approved other improvements at the softball fields. New fencing will be installed at softball fields 2, 3 and 4.

The $104,653 contract with Alliance Fence Corp. in Joliet includes fencing at nearby Memorial Stadium. Carstens said Alliance submitted the low bid, and it was $20,000 below what the park district budgeted for the project.

Continued from page 2 estimates. It started out as a $42 million project.

Those initial estimate was made before architects were hired to design the project and before bid estimates were calculated, said Lisa Dorothy, the city’s project engineer for Gateway Center. The project, which has included realignment of railroad tracks to separate freight trains from commuter trains through downtown, has been a complex one, she said.

The bus station is not a lost cause.

That station with a turnaround area to facilitate bus movement is estimated to cost $7.5 million. Dorothy said $4 million is available for that project now, although she added that it is realistic to expect some of that money to be used on unexpected costs for the train station.

Pace will join Joliet in pursuing funding for the bus station, said

Pace board President Rick Kwasneski, who also was at the Friday groundbreaking.

Meanwhile, Joliet joins six other Illinois communities along the future Amtrak high-speed rail corridor between Chicago and St. Louis, getting new or improved train stations.

Other new train stations are being built in Dwight, Pontiac, Normal, Carlinville and Alton. A train station in Lincoln is being renovated. Those projects are funded in large part by federal money made available to facilitate development of high-speed rail corridors.

The Joliet project was funded primarily with a $30 million state grant.

Illinois Transportation Secretary Randy Blankenhorn at the groundbreaking ceremony commented on the need for better service and amenities for travelers.

“You’ve got to have great transportation if you’re going to move people,” he said. “This is an example of how we’re doing that.”

LEMONT – With $2.7 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Energy, Argonne National Labs is teaming up with three other institutions to power an entire home – including electricity, hot water, heating and cooling – for one-eighth of the cost.

The goal is to have the technology available within three years, Argonne announced in a news release.

Even better, the units will be self-contained and off the grid, so they won’t be affected by regional power outages, according to Argonne, which, early this year began partnering with Purdue University, Colorado-based Air Squared Inc, and Mississippi State University to develop the first residential combined heating and power system that uses small generators run by natural gas.

Combined heating and power units are currently used in big industry to increase energy efficiency by avoiding the energy losses that occur when electricity travels over power lines, and by capturing more of the energy output

from natural gas through waste-heat recovery from the engine exhaust.

Currently, combined heating and power systems operate on large 4 or 5 kilowatt-sized generators. They are required to connect to the grid to offload excess power and can cost a staggering $25,000 to $30,000. The goal is for the new smaller generators to cost $3,000 or less and last 10 years or more.

A smaller version would also be more efficient (from current 26 percent efficiency to a potential 40 percent).

“It’s going to be something totally new,” said Munidhar Biruduganti, a principal research engineer at Argonne. “We want to shoot for an output of one kilowatt, not five kilowatts, so that all the power is used by the home.”

Eckhard A. Groll, Reilly Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Ray W. Herrick Laboratories, at Purdue University, pointed out that an obstacle will be reducing the size of the technology.

“However, the challenge of the current project lies in the miniaturization of the technology for application in a one-kilowatt power output engine.”

Beverly J. McEvilly (nee Loose), age 83, of Joliet, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, October 9, 2016, surrounded by her loving family.

Born December 19, 1932 in Joliet, she was the daughter of Gustav and Veronica (Dolegowski) Loose, and a January, 1951 graduate of Joliet Township High School. Bev worked as Food Service Manager for Hufford Junior High School, retiring in 1995. She previously was employed by Mertz’s Catering and Illinois Bell Telephone Company.

She was an active member of the Cathedral of St. Raymond and past president of the Women’s Club. She was also a founding member of Our Lady of Angels Auxiliary. Bev also served as past president of Will County Food Service and was certified by the American School Food Service Association.

Bev will be remembered for her generosity, hospitality and excellent cooking skills.

She loved to entertain and serving others always came first. She and her husband also enjoyed traveling together and visiting the casinos. Most of all, she was devoted to her family and was proud of her children and grandchildren, faithfully attending all the activities and school events throughout their lives. One of her joys was organizing her garage sales.

Surviving are her beloved husband of 65 years, Robert K. McEvilly, who she married January 27, 1951. Also surviving are her devoted children, Linda (the late Chet) Minkalis of Naperville, Robert (the late Karen) McEvilly of Plainfield, Daniel (Denise) McEvilly of Joliet, Cindy (Andy) Tomala of Lemont, Thomas (Karen) McEvilly of Shorewood and William McEvilly of Joliet; 12 grandchildren, Melissa Minkalis, Scott and Todd McEvilly, Caitlyn and Kyle McEvilly, Andrew, John and Christina Tomala, Megan, Matthew and Eric McEvilly, and Kirstin Hobbs McEvilly; one great-granddaughter, Madison; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her siblings, Irene Hareld, Chuck Loose, Bernice Nieland, Robert Loose and Emily Rolando; and a fond sister-in-law, Alyce Loose.

STACY MARIE TONGATE Stacy Marie Tongate, age 34, of Plainfield, formerly of Shorewood. Passed away peacefully at a family home on Sunday, October 9, 2016 with her family by her side after a long courageous battle with cancer.

Stacy was a graduate of Joliet Catholic Academy and received her Bachelors Degree from Northern Illinois University. She was an avid bowler as well as a Chicago Blackhawks, White Sox and Bears fan.

He moved to TX in ‘71 to begin a new career in resort property real estate sales & development. “Dick”, as he was known to family and friends, returned to Illinois in ‘89 and owned & operated a local chain of retail mattress sales stores as well as owning a home repair handy man business. Beginning in ‘98, he co-owned & managed a residential investment property business with his long time life partner, Heidi M. Ruggles.

He received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1953 from the Illinois Institute of Technology. He then proudly served the U. S. Army as a chemical warfare instructor, stationed in Puerto Rico and the Panama Canal. He dedicated 35 years of his life working as a research chemist for Blockson Chemical Company, which later became Olin Corporation.

Ron enjoyed many hobbies throughout the course of his life such as photography, playing golf, woodworking, and he was an avid computer enthusiast. He served as the first president of the Olin Corporation Employee’s Club and the president of St. John’s Catholic School Board. However, his proudest accomplishment was watching his five children become the loving and successful adults they are today.

The family would like to thank the friends, extended family and medical professionals who have shared their prayers, support and love.

Man charged with knowingly passing HIV

WILMETTE – A personal trainer from Wilmette has been charged with knowingly transmitting HIV to three women he dated.

Jimmy Amutavi, 46, has been charged with three counts of criminal transmission of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, the Chicago Tribune reported Monday.

Amutavi was diagnosed with HIV as early as 2001, Cook County prosecutors said. But despite the diagnosis, Amutavi repeatedly had unprotected sex with the women and then denied he had the virus when confronted, prosecutors allege.

They also said he began monthslong dating relationships with each of the women while working as their personal trainer between April 2015 and this year.

Amutavi’s attorney argued that his client had been taking retroviral medication that made it almost impossible for him to transmit HIV.

Survey: Farmers worry about feral hog numbers

CHAMPAIGN – A new study of Illinois farmers has found that they are worried about property damage caused by feral hogs.

Researchers from the Illinois Natural History Survey said Monday that they reviewed surveys from more than 3,000 Illinois farmers. The

study found that 84 percent of the surveyed farmers in Illinois agree that feral hogs should be eliminated whenever possible.

Feral hogs were once only in the southern U.S. but have spread and are now in 12 Illinois counties, most in the southern part of the state.

Survey scientist Craig Miller said the animals are known to damage soil and water quality and destroy agricultural crops.

The survey found farmers trapping and eliminating the hogs instead of hunting them. Miller said that’s because hunters may hit one or two hogs and the rest scatter.

U.S. judge denies media access to trial evidence

CHICAGO – A U.S. judge in the racketeering trial of six purported Hobos street-gang leaders has refused media access to photographs and other evidence even after it’s shown in open court to jurors.

Judge John Tharp Jr. ruling denies a Chicago Tribune request to release exhibits once they’re entered into evidence. Some evidence includes photos of victims allegedly killed by the gang.

Tharp has ordered jurors not to follow any media coverage of the case.

But he says in his ruling posted last week that he fears jurors wouldn’t be able to avert their eyes from sensational, front-page treatment of evidence and that that could undermine defendants’ fair-trial rights.

The Tribune argued there’s a strong presumption in favor of granting access because reporters are “the eyes and the ears of the public.”

CHICAGO – Teachers in the nation’s third-largest school district were preparing to go on strike for the second time since 2012, as contract talks between the Chicago Teachers Union and financially troubled Chicago Public Schools stretched into Monday evening with no word of an agreement.

The CTU directed its roughly 28,000 members to report to picket lines Tuesday morning unless they hear otherwise from union negotiators. At a 10 p.m. news conference Monday, CTU President Karen Lewis said it was too early to say whether teachers would strike as planned, as negotiations could continue until midnight.

mal school hours for the district’s 400,000 students if there is a strike, CPS said.

The two sides held negotiations throughout the weekend. On Monday afternoon, teachers picked up strike placards and painted banners. Earlier in the day, parents and other supporters rallied across from Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s home, and another pro-educators rally was planned for Monday evening.

“Nobody wants to go on strike, but I think the teachers finally said, ‘Enough is enough,’” said Nate Rasmussen, a preschool teacher at Beasley Elementary School on the city’s South Side. He said the district’s 2013 closing of about 50 schools, layoffs of thousands of teachers in recent years and other spending cuts have made the job tougher.

WASHINGTON – House Speaker Paul Ryan, the nation’s top elected Republican, effectively abandoned Donald Trump Monday, telling anxious fellow lawmakers he will not campaign for or defend the foundering businessman in the election’s closing weeks. Pro-Trump members rebelled in anger, accusing Ryan of conceding the election to Hillary Clinton.

Indeed, Ryan said he would devote his energy to ensuring Clinton doesn’t get a “blank check” as president with a Democratic-controlled Congress, according to people on his private conference call with GOP House members.

While the Wisconsin Republican did not formally rescind his own tepid endorsement of Trump, he told lawmakers they were free to do just that and fight for their own re-election.

Trump fired back on Twitter, saying Ryan “should spend more time on balancing the budget, jobs and illegal immigration and not waste his time on fighting the Republican nominee.”

Trump retained the backing of the Republican National Committee, which has overseen crucial field efforts for the candidate in battleground states. On a conference call with RNC members, chairman Reince Priebus said the party remains in full coordination with Trump.

“Everything is on course,” Priebus said, according to a participant in the call.

Still, Ryan’s announcement underscored the perilous predicament Republicans find themselves in one month from Election Day. Recent revelations of Trump’s predatory sexual comments about women deepened the worries

among GOP officials who fear he’ll drag down their own electoral prospects in November. But others look at Trump’s loyal bands of supporters and see no way for Republicans in other races to win without their support.

Trump himself made no reference to Ryan and the GOP defections at a Pennsylvania rally, except perhaps one line that could apply to fleeing Republicans as well as the Democrats.

“The last 72 hours has framed what this election is all about. It’s about the American people fighting back against corrupt politicians who don’t care about anything except for staying in power,” he said.

Running mate Mike Pence said he was staying with Trump. “I’m honored to be standing with him,” Pence said.

Trump’s candidacy long ago laid bare the turmoil roiling the GOP. Some party leaders had hoped to push off a reckoning until after the election, but with Ryan and other lawmakers publicly distancing themselves from Trump – and in some cases even calling for the real estate mogul to drop out of the race – that now appears impossible.

For Ryan, the most pressing goal through the next four weeks is preventing Republicans from losing control of the House, a scenario that seemed remote as recently as a week ago. Although Republicans are not yet panicking given their wide 246-186 seat majority, Ryan and Greg Walden, the chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, both acknowledged on Monday’s conference call that the majority was more in peril in light of Trump’s problems.

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Whoever wins the White House, he or she will inherit the war in Syria, one of the most complex and brutal crises in the world. But neither Hillary Clinton nor Donald Trump has articulated a comprehensive or realistic proposal to deal with it With Syrian President Bashar Assad and his allies Russia and Iran dug in and no sign the fighting is nearing an end, the new U.S. president will confront a problem for which there is no clean or clear solution. The civil war, complicated by the occupation of key areas by the Islamic State and other extremist groups, has further destabilized the Middle East and spread outward, along with millions of refugees, around the globe.

Clinton pointed out that she, as chief diplomat, had pushed for a more robust response in Syria.

“I, when I was secretary of state, advocated and I advocate today a no-fly zone and safe zone,” she said at the debate. “We need some leverage with the Russians, because they are not going to come to the negotiating table for a diplomatic resolution unless there is some leverage over them.”

Sullivan, a junior, posted nines of 37 and 34 to finish three strokes ahead of Chicago Christian’s Pete Vos, who took second.

“I had a slow start after going twoover through four, but then I finished birdie-birdie on 17 and 18,” Sullivan said. “I came in today thinking that this was my third sectional so there was nothing to be nervous about. I’m playing pretty well. My driver has been really good lately, my wedges have been good and I’m just leaving myself with makeable putts.

“We can be in the top-five at state, we just need to play to our ability and I think we should play well. We have four players who have experience from last year at state, even though we’re a young team.”

Lockport sophomore Eric Gasienca similarly exited with a positive vibe.

“I started shaky, it could have been better,” said Gasienca, who had four bogeys to open the round. “I finished strong, had three birdies in the last five holes. Really, all I wanted to do was play the game and see where it takes me.”

Gasienca and the rest of the Porters were in a bittersweet situation, qualifying five individuals but not as a team.

Gasienca felt it was good to have his teammates’ support.

“We had five kids who were able to be here and play some bonus golf, and we were excited at the chance,” Lockport coach Matt Eber said. “I thought all of them could go downstate if they played their game.

“But in this sectional, there is no margin for error. Overall, I am proud of the guys’ efforts. With two of them being sophomores, I think we will be good next year.”

Eber said the tough part is Speechley, Parker and Middleton finishing their Lockport careers.

“Those three have been great kids to have in the program,” he said. “They just came up short today. That happens.” well at state.”

Durkin, Lund and Kramer also were on last year’s squad and are looking to perform better when they compete this weekend at the Weibring Golf Course at Illinois State University.

“This feels great,” Lund said. “We all played great and it just worked out that we all came together and shot what we did. We have a solid team with only two seniors but a lot of returning kids from last year’s state team. Coach Hollatz is a great coach and he helps us when we’re out on the course. We’ve all been best friends since we were little kids, so we have a good bond between each other.”

Joliet Catholic Academy shot a 340 to finish ninth and it will again be represented at state by Jake Pluth. The junior had nine-hole scores of 42 and 39 to finish with an 81. Wally Osterberger fired an 85 while Kyle Behymer, Ryan Bell and Brendan Wills all shot an 87 for JCA. Two others shot a 79 to tie for seventh. Morris’ Jake Hulbert went 35 and 34 while Peotone’s Jake Nietfeldt had nines of 37 and 42 as the seniors earned their first state trips. Morris’ Jack Galloway shot an 83 to finish one stroke shy of a playoff to determine the final qualifier.

BRISTOL – Plainfield South junior golfer Parker Govern has a good handle on the thin line between advancing to state and missing out.

“That 76 or 77 could easily have been 78 or 79, and it could have been 74 or 75,” Govern said. “That’s golf.”

That was golf the way it played out Monday in the Class 3A Oswego Sectional at Blackberry Oaks. The Joliet area had 10 qualifying individuals, and only one – Plainfield North junior Gavin Doyle – qualified for this weekend’s state meet at The Den At Fox Creek in Bloomington. He shot a 3-overpar 75.

The top three teams and top 10 individuals not on those teams move on to state. Hinsdale Central, led by medalist Brendan O’Reily’s 69, won with 296, edging qualifiers Geneva (298) and Wheaton Warrenville South (303).

The feeling during the afternoon was that with the quality of the sectional, 75 or maybe even 74 would be needed to qualify individually. As it turned out, the cutoff pushed upward a bit.

Six players who shot 76 played off for the last two qualifying spots. The

Plainfield contingent behind Doyle came up just short as Govern and Plainfield North junior Nate Kirberg shot 77, Plainfield East sophomore Justin Blaney came in at 78 and Plainfield Central senior Jake Hawkins shot 79.

Lockport did not qualify for the sectional as a team yet had five individuals on hand. The Porters’ scores were senior Noah Speechley 80, senior John Parker and sophomore Eric Gasienca 81, senior Alex Middleton 89 and sophomore Nolan Weis 90.

Doyle was hoping his teammate, Kirberg, would qualify with his 77, but it didn’t happen. The teammates experienced similar days.

“Especially with how they started, I’m very proud of them,” North coach Mike Kneip said. “Gavin had 39 and Nate 41 on their front nine (they started the round on No. 10). They both could have shot 79 or 80, but they did a great job, and they did it at the right time. We couldn’t have been hoping for anything else.

“I’m happy for Nate and how he came back even though he missed out on being in the playoff.”

Doyle said his last nine was “a lot better. I started out bad, but I picked it up on the back. I made some birdies. I

New faces in big roles making a name for themselves GIRLS VOLLEYBALL STATS

kjasnica@shawmedia.com Going into this season, some things already were set in stone. People knew who the big guns were.

A lot of area fans knew that no one would be able to out-skill Plainfield Central’s Ashley Shook. No set of pin hitters in the area would hit as hard as Minooka’s Alli Papesh, Rocky Perinar and Holly Bonde. And out of the entire area, no one had as much success in the postseason as Joliet Catholic’s three-year varsity player Taylor Zurliene.

Aside from that, going into the season the area was a complete toss-up of extremely well-rounded players.

Many had the opportunity to step into the limelight and make a name for themselves.

Recently, a handful come to mind.

One thing stood out for Minooka in the Mizuno Cup tournament. As previously mentioned, the Indians boasted the most dominant set of pins in the area.

In fact, they have always had one of the best offenses in the area. The problem was the team did not pass or defend as well as they played offensively.

Well, that’s finally changed.

After picking up 88 digs and passing very solidly, junior libero Taylor Baranski earned all-tournament honors. She had 123 digs for the weekend and leads the area with a 15 dig per game average (314).

Baranski proved that she can limit strong offensive players to a manageable number of kills while passing well to keep her team in system. To the Indians, that might have been the missing piece to winning a sectional title.

Then, two setters named JoDee Kovanda and Molly Hackett that run 6-2 offenses have the same idea of leading the teams to a title.

Lockport’s Kovanda has tallied a team-high 135 kills, while adding 183 assists, 115 digs, 32 and 17 blocks. Two weeks ago, Lincoln-Way East’s Hackett had a combined 120 assists, 94 kills, 90 digs and 14 blocks.

Need a setter to put up a great ball?

They’re on it. Someone needs to finish the game with a kill? They swing away.

The two setters are separating themselves as players who do what is needed to win.

Two freshmen are actually starting to do that same exact thing. Plainfield Central’s Taylor Landfair and Lincoln-Way West’s Kirsten Leitshuh have shown that they know what it takes to win, and to stand apart from the class.

Leitshuh picked up her style of play from her sister Toni. She passes a solid 2.1 out of a 3.0 at a young age and has an impressive 176 digs and a team-high 143 kills.

Most freshmen do not break the 100kill mark on the varsity level, but both have already done so. The two hitters definitely have a bright future.

“Taylor has spent a great amount of time training at a high level at her volleyball club Sports Performance Volleyball Club,” Central coach Erik Vogt said.

“She comes from a great family that had encouraged her to dream big. Taylor has the physical attributes to be a stellar volleyball player, but her work ethic and commitment to detail will push her over the top.”

“Kirsten is a super nice person, and a great player and teammate,” West coach Matt Lawrence said. “She is a student of the game, and has a very calm and cool demeanor on the court. Both her offensive and defensive skill sets are extremely advanced for her age, and she continues to get better and more aggressive as the year progresses.”

Now that these players have experienced breakouts, they’ll have their chance to show how strong they are in the postseason.

The junior outside hitter totalled 98 kills, 66 digs, nine aces and four blocks in seven games. Her 14 kills-per-match average helped lead Minooka to wins over Plainfield North, Hinsdale South, Naperville Central, Lincoln-Way East and St. Charles East, and a third-place finish at the Mizuno Cup tournament. In the 4A TF South Regional, Baranski and Leitshuh might face off. Baranski will look to show that she can defend and pass well enough to help Minooka finally reach that sectional title. Leitshuh will be showing her young talent against a highly skilled pair of outsides who she might become in two seasons.

Kovanda will face off against one of the strongest offensive hitters in the area, Joliet West’s Jenny Koerner (9.5 kills per match), in the 4A Joliet West Regional.

She will have to anchor her teammates in blocking and defending well and putting up a strong counter-attack.

In the 4A Oak Forest Regional, Hackett will have to be the offensive double threat that she has been all season. With Haley Hart coming back into the lineup, she might want to dish her a few more balls to help her prepare for the tough sectional showdown between these schools.

Time will tell what these players will bring to postseason, but the girls are up for the upcoming challenge.

STAFF REPORTS PEKIN – Mike Cascino shot a 2-overpar 74 and Ricky Costello chipped in a 75 Monday to power Providence Catholic to victory in the Class 3A Boys Golf Pekin Sectional at Lick Creek.

Edwardsville (307) and Quincy (315) are the other teams advancing to this weekend’s state tournament at The Den At Fox Creek in Bloomington.

Normal Community (317) and Pekin (318) narrowly missed qualifying spots.

field shot 36 on the back nine for a 77 and qualified for state. His teammates, Brandon Brodzinski and Matt Sitar, did not advance, nor did any other Joliet area teams or individuals. Lincoln-Way Central shot 337 for eighth place and Lincoln-Way West was 12th with 359.

In addition to Casinco and Costello, Providence counted the scores of Tyler Roat (76) and Zach Bilotta (79).

“We missed qualifying by a shot

here three years ago,” Providence coach John Platt said. “Today’s horror story was, after three or four holes, we were probably in eighth place. My top two kids hit a ball over the road.

“But the MVP was Roat. He was sick as a dog, throwing up on the fifth tee box. His eyes were all red, his face is pale. I go to his dad and say, ‘If it stays that way, I’ve got to pull him.’ He said, ‘No, he’s got to play it out.’

“On the next hole, the hardest hole out there, the par-5 sixth, he makes birdie! He looked bad. It was as close

as I’ve even been to picking up a kid’s ball and saying, ‘You’re out.’ And he shot 76.”

Lincoln-Way Central’s low scorer was Cam Pyle at 83. Lincoln-Way West got 89s from Pat Potter and Dylan Adair. Individually, Lincoln-Way East’s Kevin Bullington shot 83, Joliet’s Kalvin Fellows 89 and Joliet’s Daniel Drag 94.

Meanwhile, in the Class 1A Watseka Sectional at Shewami Country Club, Wilmington’s Dillon Tjelle and Ryan Woodall failed to advance.

BEARS FILM REVIEW

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush The tape of the Bears’ 29-23 loss to the Colts on Sunday reveals absolutely the toughest kind of game to grade players’ performances in because a lot of individual players did a number of good things, but collectively they were just good enough to lose a close game to another bad team.

Brian Hoyer’s stats look great, but in many cases his decisions leave a lot to be desired.

Cameron Meredith had a breakout game at wide receiver, but his fumble in the fourth quarter is one of the biggest reasons the Bears lost.

Logan Paulsen isn’t bad as an in-line blocking tight end and his increased minutes are consistent with the increased production from Jordan Howard, but Paulsen’s repeated mental mistakes are back-breakers.

Guards Kyle Long and Josh Sitton are both playing well – Sitton in particular – but each had mistakes that were costly and not expected from veteran Pro Bowlers.

Bobby Massie is a real problem at right tackle and at this point it’s fair to wonder why Michael Adams can’t get a look.

On defense, after playing one of his best games as a Bear last Sunday, Will Sutton disappeared in Indianapolis and as positive as it is to see Akiem Hicks get a sack for the second week in a row, I keep waiting to see him dominate at least in short stretches as he did in the preseason and it’s not happening.

NFL sacks are very hard to come by and each is to be celebrated, but the

Lions and the Colts served up two of the weakest O-lines the Bears will see this year.

Harold Jones-Quartey was relegated to only 10 snaps, but Adrian Amos didn’t show up much either and the intermediate and deep middle of the field was available to Andrew Luck and company all day.

Bryce Callahan was having a great day until he dinged a hamstring and Tracy Porter had a nice bounce-back game after sitting out the second half last week with a knee issue, but Jacoby Glenn misses as many plays as he makes on the corner.

Let’s circle back to Hoyer, since

John Fox appears committed to having a quarterback controversy.

Hoyer’s numbers are great – now 1,094 passing yards, 71.4 percent accuracy, 7.8-yard average, six touchdowns, zero picks and a passer rating of 108.5 in basically 13 quarters of football.

But all of that production has still left the Bears 1-3 in the games he’s played in, and some of that is on Hoyer.

He had a solid stat line in the 11 games he played for Houston last year too, with 19 touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 91.4 passer rating – yet Houston cut him loose.

Many think it was his meltdown in

the wild card game vs. the Chiefs and his three first-half picks, but Houston didn’t want Hoyer back because he is the ultimate game manager, may not get you beat but won’t win you a game either.

When you study the tape, you see Hoyer’s first instinct when his primary receiver is covered is to find a safety valve rather than to work across the field through his progressions.

Roughly 55 percent of Hoyer’s 397 passing yards Sunday were after the catch.

With one of the best contested-ball catchers in the league in Alshon Jeffery, Hoyer prefers not to take chances.

Obviously, there is something to be said for protecting the football, actually a lot to be said.

But in three starts, Hoyer targeted Jeffery seven times on 49 throws against Dallas, five times on 36 throws against Detroit and six times on 43 throws against the Colts.

On 128 passes, Hoyer has tried to hit his franchise receiver 18 times.

That’s a mistake.

Finally, it is fair to ask again what game Dowell Loggains was watching.

The Bears averaged 6.6 yards on 18 rushes and even if you take away Howard’s 57-yard jaunt, they still averaged 4.0 yards per carry, yet the pass-to-run ratio was 43-18 and the Bears won the time of possession battle by exactly 10 seconds.

Considering the damage Luck and the Colts were doing, wouldn’t it have made more sense to run the ball and keep them off the field?

How a patient’s ‘crazy’ request for a new womb made history

The Associated Press STOCKHOLM – When the young Australian cervical cancer patient learned she had to lose her womb in order to survive, she proposed something audacious to the doctor who was treating her: She asked whether she could have a womb transplant, so she could one day carry her own baby.

This was nearly two decades ago, when the Swedish doctor Mats Brannstrom was training to be a physician abroad.

“I thought she was a bit crazy,” Brannstrom said.

But Brannstom didn’t dismiss her idea. Instead, after he returned to Sweden he began a series of painstaking research projects to learn whether it might be possible to transplant a womb, despite criticism that the unheard of procedure was dangerous, medically unnecessary and impossible.

Brannstrom went on to become the first doctor to deliver babies – five so far – from women with donated wombs.

No other doctor in the world has succeeded, despite attempts in the U.S., Saudi Arabia and Turkey, and ongoing efforts in China, Britain, France, the Czech Republic and elsewhere.

The first of Brannstom’s patients’ babies was born in 2014 and the fifth arrived in January; another is due in early 2017.

Brannstrom is working with doctors at Harvard Medical School and the Mayo Clinic to help women beyond Sweden get access to the procedure.

Doctors at Baylor University in Texas, including two former members of Brannstrom’s team, announced this week they performed four womb transplants. One was successful, but not yet ready to attempt a pregnancy.

And scientists, many of whom were both doubtful and critical before, now believe Brannstom’s work could help them extend the use of organs for those who need transplants and learn how embryos implant in the uterus after conception, a poorly understood but critical stage in pregnancy.

To figure out whether womb transplants were even feasible, Brannstrom first asked Rana Akouri, then one of his doctoral students, to start experimenting in rodents in 1999. He picked Akouri because of her delicate surgical skills – a mouse uterus is only less than an inch long (about 2 centimeters). The surgery was so complex Akouri needed four custom-made tools to perform the microscopic operations.

“I called Mats at 10 p.m. and told him, ‘One of our mice is pregnant!’ ” she said.

That night, Brannstrom said, was the first time he thought that a womb transplant in humans might actually be possible.

“If it hadn’t worked in mice, we would have quit,” he said.

Over the next decade, Brannstrom and his team performed hundreds of uterus transplants in rats, sheep, pigs and monkeys. Because Sweden forbids experiments in non-human primates, Brannstrom and 10 other doctors and nurses flew to Kenya nearly 20 times to perfect things such as their surgical technique and the use of immune-suppressing drugs in baboons.

Brannstrom described the lessthan-ideal conditions in Nairobi – no regular showers and power failures during surgery – as “team-building” experiences. Wooden carvings of African birds picked up during those trips now adorn several shelves at Brannstrom’s fertility clinic in Stockholm.

In 2012, it was time to try the surgery in humans. He obtained ethical permission to perform womb transplants in nine Swedish women. He then held an information session one evening in the southern city of Gothenburg, where the operations were to take place.

“We were quite frank in telling them, ‘This is not an infertility treatment, you’re participating in a scientific trial,’” he said. “We’re going into the unknown.”

Of the nine women who had the transplants, two had their wombs removed when complications arose. Five women had healthy babies and the last two are trying to get pregnant.

At the time, many fertility experts considered it an outlandish pursuit.

“I thought this was crazy, a highrisk surgery for no reason,” said Dr. Tommaso Falcone of the Cleveland Clinic in the U.S. But a trip to Sweden to see Brannstrom’s clinic changed his mind. Falcone is now at the forefront of the Cleveland Clinic’s womb transplantation project. He and colleagues performed the first such operation in the U.S. in February, although the organ had to be removed after the patient developed an infection.

Falcone predicts that Brannstrom’s work will lead to a better understanding of embryo implantation. And he marveled at the fact that babies have been born from organs once flushed with a cold solution – rendering them technically dead – before being placed into the recipient.

“Miscarriages are happening all over the place but here you have these dead uteruses that can carry a baby,” he said.

Other experts thought it was aston-

ishing that wombs of some post-menopausal women were able to grow healthy babies after being transplanted. Doctors typically expect younger organs to work better, but in the case of womb transplantation, organs from older women appeared “rejuvenated” after being dosed with hormones.

“All of a sudden, you have this old organ doing things that you only expected a young uterus to do,” said Dr. Stefan Tullius, chair of transplant surgery at Harvard Medical School, who said that could lead to insights into extending the use of other organs.

Until now, Brannstrom has only used live donors, considered by some to be unethical because it means putting a healthy woman at risk for a procedure that isn’t life-saving. The wombs are intended to be kept for a maximum of two pregnancies and are then removed so that patients can stop taking anti-rejection medicines.

Brannstrom believes doctors in other countries will soon deliver more babies from women with transplanted wombs and predicts that the surgery will one day become routine.

Emelie Eriksson, who received a womb transplant and then had a baby boy in 2014, said she could never thank Brannstrom enough.

“I think I need to thank him a thousand times more,” she said. “He’s my hero. He made it possible for me to have a child.”

Sometimes, however, surgery is required to repair the weakness in the fascia between your rectum and vagina. This repair may be done by reinforcing the area with stitches. Or it may involve more complex techniques, such as placing a mesh patch to strengthen and support the wall between the rectum and vagina. Surgery usually leads to improvement or complete relief of symptoms.

Many women with a rectocele also have related conditions, including bulging of the bladder into the vagina, or sagging of the uterus into the vagina. This condition is called pelvic organ prolapse. Surgery to repair pelvic organ prolapse usually can be done at the same time as a rectocele repair.

Most of the time, the symptoms caused by a rectocele can be improved by treatments. I’ll bet that’s the case with you.

Dear Dr. K: I’m a woman in my 60s. I saw my doctor because of rectal pain and constipation. She told me I have a “rectocele.”

What does this mean?

Dear Reader: The vagina is separated from the rectum by a wall of tough, fibrous tissue called fascia. Sometimes, an area of this wall gets weak, and part of the rectum bulges into the vagina. This bulge is called a rectocele.

A rectocele usually develops after the vaginal wall is damaged when a baby is born in the normal way, without a cesarean section. But symptoms may not develop until later in life. That’s because the damaged vaginal wall weakens slowly. Rectoceles often are not seen until a woman enters menopause.

Any condition that frequently puts more pressure in the lower pelvis increases the chance that a rectocele will develop. Frequent straining to have a bowel movement because of chronic constipation can do it.

So can repetitive heavy lifting. So can a chronic cough, such as from asthma, chronic lung disease or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Each surge of pressure in the lower pelvis weakens the vaginal wall slightly more.

A small rectocele may not cause any symptoms. Larger rectoceles, however, can trigger a variety of rectal and vaginal complaints. These include: • A bulge of tissue protruding through the vaginal opening • Constipation • Difficulty having a bowel movement • Pain or discomfort during sex • A feeling that the rectum has not emptied completely after a bowel movement • A sensation of rectal pressure • Rectal pain • Difficulty controlling the passage of
