Valley View Farm and Restaurant – Frankfort The 1920s was a period of dramatic economic growth in our country. Prices for cars actually fell during the decade as the assembly-line techniques permitted faster production.

Early in the decade, nearly 90 percent of all the world’s cars were made in the U.S. By 1930, more than 20 million cars were registered in the U.S., nearly three times the number during the prior decade.

As the interest in car travel grew, so did the number and variety of roadside services available in the U.S. It was during the 1920s that many of the modern conveniences for motorists sprang up along highways and major roads.

These new roadside businesses catering to the motorist included diners, hamburger stands and drive-in restaurants.

Many of the earliest suppliers of food on the Lincoln Highway started out selling gas before diversifying into food, snacks, drinks and other amenities. Other highway caterers, however, became more adventurous and enterprising from the beginning, including many family-run roadside stands, diners and drive-ins.

These small businesses were successful until larger franchises and chains began competing with them for the traveling customer.

In addition to the businesses that catered to the ravenous needs of the traveling public, there also were entrepreneurs who saw the need to help provide shelter for the road-weary motorist.

Some provided open-air locations that resembled makeshift campgrounds and offered little to the overnight guest besides a place to park the automobile and pitch a tent. These spartan facilities were soon superseded by sites providing individual huts containing beds. They were, in turn, the forerunners of the typical “tourist court,” a semicircular layout of cabins around a manager’s office.

Soon, most courts had running water in their rooms, and over the years, air conditioning, radio and eventually TVs were introduced. The evolution into the

good food and a relaxing environment.

Although the majority of food served in the restaurant was raised on the farm, Valley View Farm was best remembered for its numerous dining rooms including the Sun-Air Room and the Lean-To Lounge with its piano bar.

Tourists who needed to stay the evening could find accommodations in the Vacation Center, which included a motel and swimming pool.

Revolutionary War re-enactment included demonstrations, battle

fsarver@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – Visitors who came to the Dollinger Family Farm this weekend could take a stroll through the American Revolutionary War period and experience it firsthand.

At the farm Saturday, visitors met with soldiers of Continental and British armies who were camped there, as well as civilians and some famed figures such as Benjamin Franklin.

The Dollinger Family Farm hosted a re-enactment by the North West Territory Alliance that brought to life the history of the U.S. war of independence from British rule.

“Everyone that’s here spent years researching the unit they portrayed,” said Shelby Hauck, who portrayed a member of the First Regiment of Light Dragoons, which was part of the Continental Army.

“For some people, it’s a specific person they portray. All the clothes and gear we have has been documented,” Hauck said.

Activities held throughout the day for visitors included a load-and-fire competition, a battle sequence, artillery demonstration, civilian fashion show and uniform parade.

Visitors could walk to different camps that were part of the re-enactment and ask questions to learn about life during the Revolutionary War and see the clothes and tools that were used.

“You get to come here and you get to smell it, see it and touch it,” Hauck said.

“Instead of just reading about it, we can let you hold a gun or touch a uniform.”

An underlying theme of the event was espionage, Hauck said. Two people played spies for the British to help them launch a surprise attack, and they were to walk around the camps having secret conversations and passing each other notes, he said.

Ian Baker, who portrayed a British light infantryman with the 52nd Regiment of Foot, said every unit in the British Army had its own traditions. The soldiers were part of a numbered military system but related to each other by the communities they came from, he said.

“It makes re-enacting British rather tough. … [In] the British Army, every regiment had a different set of stuff – like down to the regimental buttons that have our number on them,” Baker said.

Trump denies actions he bragged about on tape

ST. LOUIS – In a debate brimming with tension, Hillary Clinton declared Donald Trump’s aggressively vulgar comments about women revealed “exactly who he is” and clearly demonstrated his unsuitability to be president. Firing back, Trump accused Clinton of attacking women involved in her husband’s extramarital affairs and declared she would “be in jail” if he were president.

Trump entered Sunday night’s debate desperate to steady his floundering campaign. He unleashed a barrage of attacks and insults, and continually interrupted Clinton. He repeatedly called her a “liar,” labeled her the “devil” and contended she had “tremendous hate in her heart.”

Trump acknowledged for the first time that he had paid no federal income taxes for many years.

The debate was the culmination of a stunning stretch in the race for the White House, which began with the release of a new video in which Trump is heard bragging about how his fame allowed him to “do anything” to women. Many Republicans rushed to revoke their support, with some calling for him to drop out of the race.

Answering for his words for the first time, Trump denied that he had ever kissed and grabbed women without their consent. He said repeatedly that his words in 2005 were merely “locker room talk” and paled in comparison to what he called Bill Clinton’s abuse of women.

“She should be ashamed of herself,” Trump declared. Ahead of the debate, the businessman met with three women who accused the former president of sexual harassment and even rape, then invited them to sit in the debate hall.

Bill Clinton never faced any criminal charges in relation to the allegations, and a lawsuit over an alleged rape was dismissed. He did settle a lawsuit with one of the women who claimed harassment.

On the debate stage, Clinton did not respond directly to Trump’s accusations about her husband or her own role, but was blistering in her condemnation of his predatory comments about women in the tape released Friday.

“I think it’s clear to anyone who heard him that it represents exactly who he is,” she said, adding that she did not believe Trump had the “fitness to serve” as commander in chief.

The second debate was a town hall format, with several undecided voters sitting on stage with the candidates.

The tension between Trump and Clinton was palpable from the start of their 90-minute debate, the second time they have faced off in the presidential campaign. They did not shake hands as they met at center stage.

Trump, who is several inches taller than Clinton, stood close behind her as she answered questions from the voters. At other times, he paced the stage, repeatedly interrupting her and criticizing the moderators.

The businessman opened the debate with a flood of insults aimed at Clinton, accusing her of having “lied about a lot of things” and insinuating she was the “devil.” He struggled to articulate detailed policy proposals, repeatedly dancing around questions about how he would replace President Barack Obama’s health care law, a measure he has vowed to replace.

Trump made clear that he did not agree with running mate Mike Pence on how to deal with war-torn Syria.

Last week, Pence said that the U.S. military should be ready to strike Syrian military targets that are under the command of President Bashar Assad.

The threat of military action against

the Russia-backed Assad government marks a departure from Trump’s preference for a focus on Islamic State targets.

Said Trump: “He and I haven’t spoken and I disagree.”

Trump’s campaign was already struggling before the new video was released, due in part to his uneven performance in the first presidential debate. Many Republicans saw Sunday’s showdown as his last best chance to salvage his campaign.

It was unclear whether Trump’s performance did anything to expand his support beyond his core backers.

He did repeatedly cast Clinton as a career politician who had accomplished little during her years in Washington and would be incapable of bringing about change, one of his strongest arguments in a campaign that has highlighted American’s deep frustration.

“With her, it’s all talk and no action,” Trump said.

The new revelations about Trump overshadowed potentially damaging revelations about Clinton’s paid speeches to Wall Street firms. Emails released by Wikileaks last week showed Clinton told a group that it’s

acceptable for a president to project differing positions in public and private.

Asked in the debate whether that’s “two-faced,” Clinton pointed to Abraham Lincoln, saying he did whatever he could to get the 13th Amendment passed, allowing emancipation of the slaves, by lawmakers who did not support African-American equality.

“I was making the point it is hard sometimes to get the Congress to do what you want them to do. That was a great display of presidential leadership.”

Rolling his eyes, Trump said, “Now she’s blaming the late, great Abraham Lincoln.”

The political firestorm that preceded the debate was sparked by a video obtained and released Friday by The Washington Post and NBC News. In the video, Trump, who was married to his current wife at the time, is heard describing attempts to have sex with a married woman. He also brags to Billy Bush of “Access Hollywood” about women letting him kiss them and grab their genitals because he is famous.

NBC said Sunday that it had indefinitely suspended Bush, now a “Today” show personality, for his role in the crude conversation with Trump.

Trump used the revelations as an opening to make good on his repeated promises to throw Bill Clinton’s sexual history into the center of his campaign against his wife. Less than two hours before the debate, he brazenly met publicly with several women who have accused Bill Clinton of unwanted sexual advances and even rape.

Trump refused to answer questions from reporters about his own aggressive sexual remarks about women during the meeting in a hotel conference room with Paula Jones, Juanita Broaddrick and Kathleen Willey.

Kathy Shelton, a fourth woman who appeared with Trump, was a 12-yearold Arkansas sexual assault victim whose alleged assailant was defended

by Hillary Clinton.

Some of the women seated alongside him, however, were graphic in their accusations against the Clintons.

“Mr. Trump may have said some bad words, but Bill Clinton raped me and Hillary Clinton threatened me,” Broaddrick said. “I don’t think there’s any comparison.”

Broaddrick, a former Arkansas nursing home administrator, first claimed 17 years ago that Bill Clinton raped her during a meeting in Little Rock in 1978. Her lawsuit against him was dismissed in 2001 and criminal charges were never filed. Clinton has denied the allegations.

Unfortunately, for every one scholarship awarded, another application is declined due to a lack of funding. Since 1996, the CEF has awarded nearly $18 million to 14,000 students.

Different levels of giving options are available for those who can help. For instance, a pledge of $50 per month can provide a partial scholarship to a qualified grade school student for a full school year.

A gift of $100 per month can provide a scholarship to a qualified high school student for a full school year. And nearly an entire grade school class can be provided academic scholarships for a $500 investment per month.

So many local options to enjoy this time of year On Thursday I’ll be heading to the western side of Michigan for my annual sisters outing. My two sisters live on the east side of the state, and Holland, Michigan, is a good half way point.

We’ve been having our sisters weekend in early October for nearly 30 years. It used to be more about shopping. We’d hit the Saugatuck and Douglas areas as well – and boy, we could shop back then.

Over the years, we’ve morphed our weekend to include more outdoor activities. Michigan is beautiful in October – with the changing of the leaves, cool and sunny mornings and warm afternoons. Great weather for hiking in a state park, strolling along the beach of Lake Michigan, or riding bikes from the outskirts to downtown Holland, where we can still get in a bit of shopping.

But Illinois is not that much different in the fall. Already the leaves on my red maple are starting to turn. I love the way it looks as if someone dotted it

There are so many things to do in our area without going very far.

On Saturday, at Channahon’s Central Park, is Harvest Fest from 4 to 6 p.m. The Channahon Park District is celebrating fall with taking hayrack rides, drinking hot cider, cooking s’mores over a fire, decorating pumpkins and making scarecrows. The park district will supply both pumpkins and hay; all you need is scarecrow clothes and accessories. And bring your flashlight for the evening’s candy scramble.

There are multiple farms in our area for family fun such as corn mazes, hayrides, haunted houses, historical buildings, animals and, of course, pick-

ing out your favorite pumpkin.

Check out the websites of Dollinger’s Family Farm, Hansel Road in Channahon; Heaps Giant Pumpkin Farm, Route 52 in Minooka; and Siegel’s Cottonwood Farm, Weber Road in Crest Hill.

I am fortunate to live a half-mile from the I&M Canal trailhead, which is great for biking and walking to view the fall colors. From the entrance near my subdivision I can head either east toward Joliet or west toward Channahon State Park dam and Morris.

McKinley Woods is just about a 6-mile bike ride from Ford Road and Kerry Sheridan Grove (formerly Moose Island) about halfway in-between.

Both of these gems are great places to walk or bike to and are adjacent to our waterways.

If you like to be on the water instead of viewing it from the banks, kayaking or canoeing are great options. There are several places to put small watercraft into the DuPage River in Channa-

hon, Shorewood and Plainfield.

William G. Stratton State Park in Morris has access to the Illinois and Mazon rivers.

Once we get past Halloween and pumpkins, celebrate National Bison Day Nov. 5 at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie.

I’ve hiked the trails there, and it’s a beautiful place for a walk and to see nature. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot one of the many bison in the huge pasture, starting at the Iron Bridge Trailhead, which is the main pasture access point.

This is by no means a complete list of all the fun things to do just outside our own backdoor. While I always look forward to sharing the start of fall with my sisters, it’s great to know I can step out my door and be just minutes from the awesome nature in our area.

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Teachers at Joliet Public Schools District 86 over the weekend learned new experiments to teach their students from Emmy-award television personality and educator Steve Spangler.

Dozens of teachers districtwide went Saturday to a science workshop led by Spangler where they learned how to create a circuit with an energy stick, create instant snow and more.

Spangler hosts a YouTube web series called “The Spangler Effect” and is the author of two best-selling books on science experiments, according to his website.

“It was so much fun. Very energizing, lots of wonder and inquiry. Everybody was laughing,” said Joy Gillihan, a fifth-grade teacher at Pershing Elementary School. “It was an absolute pleasure to be there.”

Spangler’s visit was the result of Courtney Voogt, Pershing Elementary School first-grade teacher, being one of three grand-prize winners in Citgo’s Fueling Education Program contest.

The prize was science teacher training and $5,000 in student school supplies.

“It was just really exciting because I’m a first-year teacher and I didn’t have many supplies for my classroom,” said Voogt, who Gillihan said was her student-teacher last year.

Voogt said a friend sent her a link to the Citgo contest website and she entered her plan and other information. She said she found out there were 70,000 applicants, and she ended up being one of three to win.

She said it was neat to win a contest that allowed her to share the prize with other teachers.

“It’s a neat opportunity for us to grow together and take it back to people who weren’t able to make it,” Voogt said.

Citgo created the Fueling Education program in 2012 to help foster educational opportunities in classrooms across the nation, according to its website. Citgo has donated more than $250,000 in classroom supplies since then. Voogt said Spangler’s workshop will help teachers in turn bring science alive for District 86 students.

Gillihan said every teacher at the workshop received a copy of Spangler’s book, “Naked Eggs and Flying Potatoes: Unforgettable Experiments That Make Science Fun.”

JOLIET – Joliet Junior College recently held its Disability Awareness Day event to support and empower students with disabilities.

The event was held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday – the same day the JJC Disability Awareness Club was chartered at the college, said Mindy Diaz, the club’s sponsor and coordinator for the JJC’s Student Accommodations and Resources, or StAR, office.

Diaz said the club planned and helped facilitate the event.

“I can’t even begin to explain how proud of them I was,” she said.

Disability Awareness Day is a joint initiative of the club, StAR and the Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living and coincides with October as a month to raise national awareness about disabilities, including for those in the workforce with a disability.

This year, National Disability Employment Awareness month recognizes the role disability plays in workforce diversity, and the theme is Inclusion Works, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

NDEA dates back to 1945, when Congress declared the first week of October “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.”

Disability Awareness Day was held to demonstrate technology that helps make JJC accessible to students, to help students understand the needs of those with disabilities and to recognize their potential.

The event attracted more than 230 participants, Diaz said. It included booths and panel discussions by students and faculty with disabilities. Diaz said one of the great parts of the event was professionals talking about their disability and accommodation needs.

She said it was nice for students to see those professionals and know they can obtain a college degree and career with a disability.

“You don’t have to be Superman to do that,” she said. “It was a pretty amazing day.”

Diaz said Disability Awareness Day is important because it allows students the opportunity to feel empowered with regards to their disability.

“It promotes awareness with other students on campus. It destigmatizes disability on campus,” Diaz said.

To the Electors of the State of Illinois: The Illinois Constitution establishes a structure for government and laws. There are three ways to initiate change to the Illinois Constitution: (1) a constitutional convention may propose changes to any part; (2) the General Assembly may propose changes to any part; or (3) a petition initiative may propose amendments limited to structural and procedural subjects contained in the Legislative Article. The people of Illinois must approve any changes to the Constitution before they become effective. The purpose of this document is to inform you of proposed changes to the Illinois Constitution and provide you with a brief explanation and a summary of the arguments in favor of and in opposition to the proposed amendment.

Proposed changes in the existing constitutional amendment are indicated by underscoring all new matter and by crossing with a line all matter which is to be deleted.

PROPOSED AMENDMENT TO ADD SECTION 11 TO ARTICLE IX OF THE ILLINOIS CONSTITUTION ARTICLE IX – REVENUE SECTION 11. TRANSPORTATION FUNDS (a) No moneys, including bond proceeds, derived from taxes, fees, excises, or license taxes relating to registration, title, or operation or use of vehicles, or related to the use of highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, airports, or to fuels used for propelling vehicles, or derived from taxes, fees, excises, or license taxes relating to any other transportation infrastructure or transportation operation, shall be expended for purposes other than as provided in subsections (b) and (c). (b) Transportation funds may be expended for the following: the costs of administering laws related to vehicles and transportation, including statutory refunds and adjustments provided in those laws; payment of highway obligations; costs for construction, reconstruction, maintenance, repair, and betterment of highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, airports, or other forms of transportation; and other statutory highway purposes. Transportation funds may also be expended for the State or local share of highway funds to match federal aid highway funds, and expenses of grade separation of highways and railroad crossings, including protection of at-grade highways and railroad crossings, and, with respect to local governments, other transportation purposes as authorized by law. (c) The costs of administering laws related to vehicles and transportation shall be limited to direct program expenses related to the following: the enforcement of traffic, railroad, and motor carrier laws; the safety of highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, or airports; and the construction, reconstruction, improvement, repair, maintenance, operation, and administration of highways, under any related provisions of law or any purpose related or incident to, including grade separation of highways and railroad crossings. The limitations to the costs of administering laws related to vehicles and transportation under this subsection (c) shall also include direct program expenses related to workers’ compensation claims for death or injury of employees of the State’s transportation agency; the acquisition of land and the erection of buildings for highway purposes, including the acquisition of highway rights-of-way or for investigations to determine the reasonable anticipated future highway needs; and the making of surveys, plans, specifications, and estimates for the construction and maintenance of flight strips and highways. The expenses related to the construction and maintenance of flight strips and highways under this subsection (c) are for the purpose of providing access to military and naval reservations, defense-industries, defense-industry sites, and sources of raw materials, including the replacement of existing highways and highway connections shut off from general use at military and naval reservations, defense-industries, and defense-industry sites, or the purchase of rights-of-way. (d) None of the revenues described in subsection (a) of this Section shall, by transfer, offset, or otherwise, be diverted to any purpose other than those described in subsections (b) and (c) of this Section. (e) If the General Assembly appropriates funds for a mode of transportation not described in this Section, the General Assembly must provide for a dedicated source of funding. (f) Federal funds may be spent for any purposes authorized by federal law.

EXPLANATION The proposed amendment adds a new Section to the Revenue Article of the Illinois Constitution that provides revenue generated from transportation related taxes and fees (referred to as “transportation funds”) shall be used exclusively for transportation related purposes. Transportation related taxes and fees include motor fuel taxes, vehicle registration fees, and other taxes and user fees dedicated to public highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit (buses and rail), ports, or airports.

Under the proposed amendment, transportation funds may be used by the State or local governments only for the following purposes: (1) costs related to administering transportation and vehicle laws, including public safety purposes and the payment of obligations such as bonds; (2) the State or local share necessary to secure federal funds or for local government transportation purposes as authorized by law; (3) the construction, reconstruction, improvement, repair, maintenance, and operation of highways, mass transit, and railroad crossings; (4) expenses related to workers’ compensation claims for death or injury of transportation agency employees; and (5) to purchase land for building highways or buildings for to be used for highway purposes.

This new Section is a limitation on the power of the General Assembly or a unit of local government to use, divert, or transfer transportation funds for a purpose other than transportation. It does not, and is not intended to, impact or change the way in which the State and local governments use sales taxes, including the sales and excise tax on motor fuel, or alter home rule powers granted under this Constitution. It does not seek to change the way in which the State funds programs administered by the Illinois Secretary of State, Illinois Department of Transportation, and operations by the Illinois State Police directly dedicated to the safety of roads, or entities or programs funded by units of local government. Further, the Section does not impact the expenditure of federal funds, which may be spent for any purpose authorized by federal law.

But Claudia’s music service expanded beyond the walls of District 17.

Claudia also sang solo pieces for special events, such as weddings and funerals.

Claudia and her family – just Claudia and her family – would sing for special Christmas and Easter Masses at their church, St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Minooka.

“I remember singing ‘The Little Drummer Boy’ during communion.

When we were done singing, everyone in the congregation literally began applauding,” Kassy said. “It was very inappropriate for Mass, but it was just one of those moments.”

Kassy also remembers being 8 or 9 and standing next to Claudia while her mother sang a descant version of “Silent Night.”

“That was the most beautiful thing I ever heard my mother sing,” Kassy said. “I remember thinking, ‘That’s what I want to be.’ ” Before Claudia began teaching at District 17, she taught private piano lessons in her home, Kent said. As Kent grew older, he wondered why some people were too self-conscious to sing.

“For me, music was everywhere all

the time, to the point that I thought every child grew up like that,” Kent said.

But Claudia’s love for music and teaching only partly explains her successful as a music educator. Through the years, Claudia kept the achievement bar high.

“She was very good at teaching kids, but she was also very good at teaching teachers. She had many student-teachers throughout her career,” Kent said.

“But it didn’t matter if you were in kindergarten or 22 years old, she had high standards and you were to meet those standards. If you did not meet them, she would very gently tell you that.”

Claudia held herself to the same standards. In her last year of teaching, Claudia worked through chemotherapy treatments for cancer, Kent said. That was typical Claudia, who was 66 when she died Sept. 8.

She put others first, Kate said.

“She loved unconditionally,” Kate said. “She was a woman of faith. She didn’t shove it down your throat.

“She just lived it.”

CHANNAHON – When Sydney Monroe of Channahon was a child, sports – not music – was her thing.

But third- and fourth-grade music classes inspired Sydney and that’s because of her teacher, Claudia Krause. Claudia nudged her students away from their comfort zones – Sydney wound up singing in choir and school musicals – and let them know they could do “anything they put their mind to.”

No child ever walked into Claudia’s classroom without hearing Claudia sing their name.

“She had us sing it back to her, too.

It was really cool,” Sydney said. “She made sure we were loved, too.”

Claudia taught music at Channahon School District for 24 years, retiring in 2013. Claudia landed the job almost by chance and almost didn’t become a music teacher.

“My mom really thought she wanted to be a math teacher,” said Claudia’s daughter, Kate Ross of Minooka. “But when she went to Bradley University to study math, she decided she did not really love math; she liked math. She really loved music.”

Claudia’s son, Kent Krause of Wheaton, said Claudia first delved into music while in high school. Kent said she sang operetta and sang in the choir.

Kassy Krause of Wheaton, Claudia’s daughter, said Claudia also played piano and continued singing and performing while at Bradley.

“She had the most beautiful voice,” Kassy said.

The year that Claudia – a stay-athome mother of 8-year-old Kate, 7-yearold Kent and 2-year-old Kassy – decided to go back to work was the same year Channahon School District 17 posted a job opening for a music teacher.

He dedicated 35 years of his life working as a research chemist for Blockson Chemical Company, which later became Olin Corporation.

Ron enjoyed many hobbies throughout the course of his life such as photography, playing golf, woodworking, and he was an avid computer enthusiast. He served as the first president of the Olin Corporation Employee’s Club and the president of St. John’s Catholic School Board. However, his proudest accomplishment was watching his five children become the loving and successful adults they are today.

The family would like to thank the friends, extended family and medical professionals who have shared their prayers, support and love.

Bob was currently the oldest member of the American Legion Band. Graduate of Joliet Township High School Class of 1939 and Northwestern University in 1948. Walter D. Bailey Sr. departed this life of Saturday, October 1, 2016 at Silver Cross Hospital after a long illness for over 30years...his doctors referred to him as their miracle patient. Walter was born in Stoney Creek, VA. He was the son of Alex Bailey and Beatrice Bailey.

At an early age he joined Little Bethel Church in Stony Creek, VA. He moved to Joliet, IL at age sixteen and joined the Joliet Job Corps Program for vocational and academic training. He graduated from Joliet Central High School in 1969.

Walter’s hobbies and talents were basically the same. He loved being an over the road driver for which he retired from J&R Schugel Trucking, Inc., New ULMMinnesota. He was a talented mechanic,electrical worker, plumber, machinists and diesel mechanic. His former employment included working at U.S. Steel and the Caterpillar Tractor Co. In Walter’s spryer years, he was of a lover of motorcycles and enjoyed riding and racing.

Walter is survived by his cherished wife of 37 years, better known as his dragon lady as he loved to call her, Ethel Bailey; to this union there are two sons; Walter Jr. and Phillip Williamson; his extended family members include; Kevin Cameron and Sawanna Cameron; special grandchildren, Demarcus Williamson, Terrence Campbell, TaTashia Cameria; and one brother, Oliver Hayes Bailey of Dinwiddie, VA; two sisters, Alma Dozier and Joyce Bailey of Portsmouth, VA; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends. Boxing great Aaron Pryor dies at 60

Aaron Pryor, the relentless junior welterweight who fought two memorable bouts with Alexis Arguello, died Sunday. He was 60.

Pryor’s family issued a statement saying the boxer died at his home in Cincinnati after a long battle with heart disease.

Known as “The Hawk,” Pryor was a crowd favorite who fought with a frenetic style, rarely if ever taking a step backward. His fights in the early 1980s with Arguello, the great Nicaraguan champion, were both classics that are still talked about in boxing circles.

But Pryor was a troubled champion, and his career would unravel because of an addiction to cocaine.

“He was very unorthodox and could throw punches from all kinds of angles with great hand speed,” former Associated Press boxing writer

Ed Schuyler Jr. said. “He was a great fighter, it’s too bad he didn’t have more fights.”

Pryor’s widow, Frankie Pryor, said her husband – who would later speak out about the evils of drugs – also had a side most fans didn’t know about.

“Aaron was known around the world as ‘The Hawk’ and delighted millions of fans with his aggressive and crowd-pleasing boxing style,” she said in a statement announcing his death. “But to our family he was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.”

Pryor was unbeaten in 31 fights when he and Arguello met in a 140-pound title clash in the Orange Bowl in Miami on Nov. 12, 1982. Arguello was a classic boxer-puncher considered one of the top pound-forpound fighters, but Pryor would not back off as the two men traded punches for the better part of 14 rounds.

Pryor finally wore Arguello down,

stopping him in the 14th round with a flurry of punches. Ring Magazine later picked the bout as the Fight of the Decade.

“It was one of the best fights I’ve ever seen,” Schuyler said. “I’d put it in the top five.”

Pryor’s win was marred, though, by questions about a bottle wrapped in black tape that his corner man raised to his lips on several occasions between rounds in the fight. Many in boxing thought it contained stimulants, but the corner man, Artie Curley, said it was peppermint schnapps.

Pryor would beat Arguello again the next September in Las Vegas, this time stopping him in the 10th round of their scheduled 15-round bout. Arguello went down in the round from a series of punches and declined to get back up.

“Arguello was a great fighter but he couldn’t handle Pryor,” Schuyler said. “He could have gotten up, but

what was the point?”

The second Arguello fight was the pinnacle of Pryor’s career. He became a heavy cocaine user, and fought only six more times in the next seven years, finishing his career with a record of 39-1 with 35 knockouts.

“I reached out and certain people did not give me their right hand,” Pryor said later of his drug use. “They gave me drugs.”

Pryor was named the “Greatest Jr. Welterweight of the Century” by The Associated Press, and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1996. He would later travel the world making personal appearances and spreading his anti-drug message.

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois is billions in debt, has billions in overdue bills and can’t seem to remove itself from a budget morass, yet it’s the nation’s worst in reclaiming hundreds of millions of dollars in overpaid unemployment benefits, an Associated Press analysis of federal labor data found.

The abysmal performance – claiming only about $264 million of the $714 million in overpayments from 2012 to 2016 – is one reason the U.S. Labor Department said that it would step in to help Illinois meet standards for management, record-keeping and timeliness, according to an Aug. 31 letter obtained by the AP under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act. Illinois’ 37 percent recovery rate is the worst among all U.S. states and territories, which average 66 percent, the AP found.

That unclaimed $452 million can’t be used to alleviate social services that have suffered because of the state’s 21-month budget crisis, because it’s earmarked for current legitimate jobless claims or be held in savings to dole out for unemployment in the future.

Chicago teachers, school officials look to avert strike

CHICAGO – Contract negotiations between Chicago teachers and officials in the nation’s third-largest school district took place throughout the weekend in hopes of reaching a deal to avert a strike.

The Chicago Teachers Union has said its members are prepared to stop instruction for about 400,000 students as early as Tuesday morning for its second major strike since 2012, when teachers were out for seven school days. At issue during the negotiations, which have stretched into a second year, are pen-

URBANA – Enrollment totals for this fall show the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign is the seventh-largest public university campus in the country with 44,880 students.

Gov: Trains swiped each other, causing derailment The U.S. appointments also sent NEW HYDE PARK, N.Y. – A 12-car commuter train and a work train performing track maintenance were traveling the same direction when they “side-swiped” each other, causing the commuter train to derail and injuring 33 people, four seriously, state officials said Sunday.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, speaking at the site of the Saturday night accident, said initial reviews indicate the yellow maintenance train somehow entered the clearance space of the eastbound Long Island Rail Road train, causing it to derail and leaving “a splatter of yellow paint where the first collision occurred.”

“Both trains were running in the same direction – one was a work train, one was a revenue train and they side-swiped each other,” Cuomo said. “The question is why.”

BERLIN – German police searched nationwide Sunday for a 22-year-old Syrian man believed to have been preparing a bombing attack, who slipped through their fingers as they were closing in on him, and were questioning a second Syrian man on suspicion he was involved in the plot.

The man in custody was one of three apprehended in the eastern city of Chemnitz on Saturday. He was the renter of the apartment that police raided in their search for the main suspect, Jaber Albakr from the Damascus area of Syria, Saxony police spokesman Tom Bernhardt told The Associated Press. The other two men have been released.

He said the man in custody was Albakr’s “countryman,” but wouldn’t give other details.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – When Hurricane Matthew dumped torrential rains on North Carolina, thousands of people found themselves suddenly trapped in homes and cars. Rescuers in Coast Guard helicopters plucked some of them from rooftops and used military vehicles to reach others, including a woman who held on to a tree for three hours after her car was overrun by flood waters.

In another dramatic rescue, a woman with her small child perched on the roof of her car had to be helped to safety as the waters rose around them, underscoring how quickly Matthew wreaked havoc 100 miles or more inland after sparing much of the Southeastern coast the catastrophic damage once feared.

The storm killed more than 500 people in Haiti and at least 18 in the U.S. – nearly half of them in North Carolina. Most were swept away by flood waters. Gov. Pat McCrory said authorities were searching for five people and feared they may find more victims. The problems were far from over as all that rain – more than a foot in places – flows into rivers and downstream, likely causing days of major flooding in many of the same places devastated by a similar deluge from Hurricane Floyd in 1999.

“Hurricane Matthew is off the map. But it is still with us. And it is still deadly,” McCrory said.

Princeville, a town of 2,000 that disappeared in the waters of the Tar River during Floyd, was

evacuated Sunday as the river was expected to rise to 17 feet above flood stage by late Monday – a level not seen since Floyd. McCrory expected more evacuations as some rivers were predicted to crest next Friday.

David Bullock’s sister called him as he bought lottery tickets to tell him police were knocking on doors saying they had to go. He rebuilt his home after the 1999 flood.

“If I get flooded again, I can’t take it. I can’t go back and take the expense. If I get flooded again I’m going to say, ‘it’s yours, I’m gone,’ ” Bullock said.

More than a million people in South Carolina and North Carolina were without power, and at least four separate sections of Interstate 95 – the main artery linking the East Coast from Florida to Maine – were closed in North Carolina.

The ferocity of the rain caught people by surprise. Ezekiel Crowe, 10, escaped the floods in Fayetteville on Saturday with his parents and seven brothers and sisters when a police boat plucked them from an apartment as the waters rose. “I was scared. I was scared. And I thought, I thought the world was going to end.

But it didn’t,” he said.

In Wilson County, rescuers were called when a 63-year-old woman didn’t make it home from work. They heard her cries for help while riding on top of a Humvee, and when they couldn’t get her with a rope, a National Guard soldier swam to her, staying until a rescue boat arrived, Emergency Management Director Gordon Deno, said.

BEARS FIND WAY TO LOSE

Hard to figure this team out after some solid play and a frustrating loss Fresh off their 29-23 loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, the Bears have become a team that is flat-out impossible to figure out.

Am I surprised the Bears played their best offense of the season, showed their best pass rush of the season, continued to uncover young players that appear to have very

Actually, no, the game went pretty much the way I predicted.

The puzzle is do we celebrate this performance, laud the development of young talent or throw up our arms in frustration over a game that never should have gotten away?

For example, Brian Hoyer on Sunday became just the second quar-

terback in Bears history to throw for 300 yards in three straight games, and the other guy isn’t Jay Cutler, Erik Kramer, Jim McMahon or even Sid Luckman.

The problem is that performance came against one of the poorest excuses we’ve ever seen for an NFL defense and Hoyer still found a way to lose.

He took great care of the football, but in that singular focus left a number of big plays on the field that might have turned the game, and on his last play of the game he misread the coverage and, rather than throw the ball to a wide open Alshon Jeffery in the end zone for the win, he chose to go behind a well-covered Cameron Meredith for the loss.

The Bears now have a quarterback controversy very much of head coach John Fox’s making over a guy who is just good enough to lose impressively with.

Willie Young led the pass rush with a career-high three sacks.

“Defensively up front, we all had our mind made up. It wasn’t any in-between thinking,” he said. “It was all about, we have to do whatever it takes to get after the quarterback. Get him ever play professional football who stepped into his first big chance in the NFL and played well enough to be thought of as a potential big-time receiver down the road, but whose fumble at his own 27-yard line with 3:38 to play may very well have cost the Bears the game.

Meredith may be worth getting excited about, but it’s really hard to know because as impressive as his 9-130, 14.4, 1 TD outing was in Indianapolis, it came against such a bad team in a losing effort he helped create.

I thought the Bears had found a really good nickel in Bryce Callahan – another youngster who like Meredith is a 2015 undrafted rookie free agent – until I realized last week he is actually a really good starting corner, if he can ever stay on the field.

After an outstanding first half Sunday, Callahan finished the game injured on the sideline with a hamstring problem.

Will he ever be healthy?

It is impossible not to sing the praises of Jordan Howard. General manager Ryan Pace found a really

So why did offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains only run him 16 times for 118 yards in Indy when it was clear handing the ball to him 24 or more times was probably the best way to win the game and quite possibly would have?

Finally, I give you Connor Barth.

Take him, please.

At no time has there ever been a chance Barth was likely to be more dependable than Robbie Gould inside the 45 or otherwise, which is why we are told he is a Bear.

Gould is the best ever in that regard. So why does Barth have his job?

In fairness, everybody, this is what rebuilding looks like and this is what we signed up for. That is not the problem.

The problem is on Sunday in Indy it became a lot less clear as to whether the Bears have control of the plan.

INDIANAPOLIS – The defense finally got the pass rush going, nearly matching its season-high in sacks with five, but it was an afternoon of near-misses and not enough in a 29-23 loss to the Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium, dropping the Bears to a 1-4 record.

“We’ve just got to go out there and execute. We had a couple mistakes and with a quarterback like Andrew [Luck], he’s going to find that every time,” said Jerrell Freeman, Luck’s former teammate.

Despite a spirited pass rush from the Bears, Luck completed 71.2 percent of his passes and didn’t turn it over while also converting three third-andlongs. He put the exclamation mark on the victory with his 35-yard touchdown pass to T.Y. Hilton.

“We knew he was going to be able to extend plays, that’s what he does so well,” said Danny Trevathan, who returned from thumb surgery and had six tackles. “He’s kind of in that category with Aaron Rodgers with scrambling around, extending plays and using his legs to get that extended play and get

sure right now,” Young said. “We’ve just got to come out with the ‘W’. Especially close games like that.”

“It wasn’t bad at all,” Trevathan said. “All of it wasn’t bad, all of it wasn’t good, but we’ve got to separate it and capitalize on our mistakes and get them corrected.”

Offense stalls late: The 522 yards the Bears gained on offense, the franchise’s most since 1989, weren’t enough, either, to get a win.

“It don’t matter if we don’t win the game,” said Alshon Jeffery, who had five catches for 77 yards on six targets.

“I don’t give a damn what we did out there. If we don’t win the game, that [expletive] don’t matter.”

Brian Hoyer threw for 397 yards in another efficient and impressive outing, but it’s his last play that got the most attention Sunday afternoon. On fourth-and-8 from the Colts’ 28-yard line, Hoyer threw an incomplete pass to Cameron Meredith while Jeffery was single-covered down the left sideline.

“Really to be honest, on that last play, I thought there was no way they wouldn’t [double-team Jeffery], and so I saw the safety wide, and like I said, we’ll watch the film and see how they played it,” Hoyer said.

Jeffery, who put his hands up in frustration after the play – an incomplete pass over the middle intended for Meredith – said afterward, “One play doesn’t change the game.”

Shaw Media correspondent The Class 3A boys golf sectional Monday at Lick Creek Golf Course in Pekin may have the feel of a fox hunt more than just a golf tournament.

Providence Catholic is the fox. The other teams are the hounds, ready to chase the Celtics over the hills and through the dales of the scenic and testing course.

It’s been that way all year, no matter where Providence has teed it up.

The Celtics have a 1-2 punch in Division I-bound seniors Ricky Costello, who is ticketed for Iowa State, and Michael Cascino, who has Butler, Loyola and DePaul pursuing him. Costello fired a career-low 66 at Wedgewood last week, followed by Cascino’s 71.

The team’s total of 2-over 290 was the lowest of the 12 qualifying teams from four sites by 14 strokes.

So how good is this edition of the Celtics?

“It’s probably the most consistent,” said Celtics coach John Platt, a player and teacher who has had five state-qualifying teams in the past seven seasons. “Ricky averages 70.5, and we go down to the fifth player averaging 77.

“But it’s kind of funny. Every fall, when we start and do qualifying, I give my speech and I say, ‘Let’s get one thing straight here: The best player in this room is standing up. When you start beating me, I know we’re going to be pretty good.’ Well, Ricky’s destroying me right now, and Michael’s really close.”

Costello, with a pair of top-six finishes in the state championship the past two years, was a medalist at Lick Creek as a freshman, scoring 73. He thinks this is the most consistent of the four teams he’s been on.

“We’ve just got to take it one tournament at a time,” Costello said. “Not try to get ahead of ourselves here. I think we’re one of the best contenders in the state, but do I want to set any goals for state? No. We’ve still got sectional to go. That’s what we’re all focused on.”

Lincoln-Way Central seeks 1st state trip in 40 years

cherron@shawmedia.com Lincoln-Way’s girls golf program kicked off IHSA competition in impressive fashion, qualifying for the state finals in both 1975 and 1976, the first two years of the event.

But it’s been 40 years since the Knights last advanced as a team, and that’s a streak coach Brian Shannon’s squad would like to see end Tuesday when it participates in the Class 2A Lockport Sectional at Broken Arrow.

Central posted the best score of the four regional champions in the sectional when it shot a 309 at Wedgewood to win the Joliet Central Regional by 28 strokes.

“I am happy with how the season is progressing,” Shannon said. “The sectional is one of, if not the toughest in the state, but we are so excited to take on that challenge.

“Our focus still has to be on Broken Arrow. We are going to practice a lot there and create a plan of how to attack the course. At the end of the day, we are just playing the course and I like our chances at that course.”

Hinsdale Central fired a 311 to win its own regional over Naperville North (329) and Benet Academy (332) at the Oak Brook Hills Resort, while Sandburg shot a 330 at Lincoln Oaks to capture the Shepard Regional title.

In order to reach the IHSA finals at Hickory Point Golf Course in Forsyth, the Knights need to get past a

few teams with recent experience in advancing to state to claim a top-three spot.

Most notable in that regard is twotime defending state champion Hinsdale Central, which features a lineup that has four girls who have played on both title teams, including three who were all-staters last year after placing in the top 10.

The Red Devils are hoping to become the first program to three-peat since Normal University High from 2005-07. Considering that Hinsdale Central has won five straight sectionals and also made seven consecutive state trips, it’s a good bet that it will be state-bound again.

Sandburg is seeking its fourthstraight trip to the finals, and Naperville North last qualified in 2013 after falling one stroke shy a year ago.

Benet, which is led by returning allstater Lauren Beaudreau, last year’s sectional medalist who lives in Lemont, hasn’t qualified as a team.

In the regional, the Knights were paced by Brianne Bolden, who earned medalist honors with a six-under 66.

She qualified for state last season as a freshman. Grace Curran took third place with a 74, while Taylor Miron and Hannah Mastandrea were the other scorers.

Providence beat Lincoln-Way East, 337-343, for second place. The Celtics, who will be making their fifth straight sectional trip, are led by Alyssa Gromala, who shot a 73 at the regional to

finish second. The senior is looking to earn her fourth straight trip to state.

Claire Moutvic shot an 82 in the regional to pace the Griffins, who missed out on a sectional trip last season after advancing out of the regional in the previous 10 years.

Hannah Slater leads three qualifiers from Lincoln-Way West, and Erica Long had the best score among Lockport’s four individuals who advanced.

Mandi Granato is one of two Plainfield South players who qualified, and Joliet Township’s Alyssa Hornbuckle also moved on.

Lemont has a pair of qualifiers, led

by Maggie Micetich, who’s a returning state qualifier. Plainfield North also has two qualifiers, with MacKenzie Wolendowski posting her team’s best regional score. Plainfield East’s Shania Gimenez also advanced.

Also in Class 2A, coach Joe Host’s Minooka program is advancing to the sectional for a seventh straight year after taking second in the Rock Island Regional. Maddie Erickson, Hailey Arlis and Miranda Sharp led the Indians at the regional and will now compete in the Sacred Heart-Griffin Sectional at Springfield’s Illini Country Club.

Girls sectional play kicks off Monday with those in Class 1A taking part in the Pontiac Sectional at the Pontiac Elks Club. Joliet Catholic Academy advanced as a team with Jennifer Filotto leading the way. Five other individuals will also compete in the sectional.

CONCORD, N.C. – Stuck in the longest losing streak of his career, Jimmie Johnson had a chance for a critical win that could salvage this ho-hum season for Hendrick Motorsports.

Hardly a championship contender for most of this season, Johnson grabbed a victory at sun-soaked Charlotte Motor Speedway when nearly half the title contenders had horrible days.

The win Sunday was his third of the season, but snapped a 24-race losing streak dating to March. Johnson is the only Hendrick driver to visit victory lane this season, and this win earned him an automatic berth into the third round of the playoffs. It’s the first time Johnson has made it out of the second round since the elimination format was introduced in 2014. He was knocked out at Talladega in the second round of the inaugural season, and was bounced in the first round last year.

Suddenly, the six-time NASCAR champion is a realistic contender for that elusive record-tying seventh title.

“We can’t sit back and celebrate too much on this,” Johnson said. “We’ve got to buckle down and get to work tomorrow and keep advancing our race cars.

But this does buy us a couple weeks of freedom.”

The race was originally scheduled for Saturday night, but Hurricane Matthew washed out nearly the entire weekend and set up an 800-mile doubleheader of the Sprint Cup and Xfinity Series on Sunday. When the racing finally began on a beautiful North Carolina afternoon, it immediately shaped up as a Hendrick kind of day.

Johnson and Chase Elliott dominated the race, running 1-2 for a long stretch, and a Hendrick victory all but guaranteed based on the speed the Chevrolets showed. Elliott, though, was one of five Chase drivers to finish 30th or worse, and it was Johnson who had to carry the flag.

Fitting, though.

The win came on the 15th anniversary of Johnson’s debut in Cup for Hendrick, which was at Charlotte, and was his eighth career win at the track.

Nobody ever gave up, and you know, we know what a champion Jimmie is,” team owner Rick Hendrick said.

Johnson has quietly turned up his performance in the Chase and became an official title contender as the first driver qualified for the next round. He led a race-high 155 laps Sunday, and in four Chase races this season, he’s led 363 laps and hasn’t finished lower than 12th.

REDSKINS 16, RAVENS 10: At Baltimore, the Redskins used an 85-yard punt return by Jamison Crowder and an uncharacteristically strong performance by their defense to beat the Ravens.

It was the third straight win for the Redskins (3-2), who came in with the

league’s 29th-ranked defense. Washington allowed a touchdown on the game’s opening drive and smothered the Ravens (3-2) the rest of the way.

STEELERS 31, JETS 13: At Pittsburgh, Ben Roethlisberger passed for 380 yards and four touchdowns and the surging Steelers pulled away in the second half for a win over the Jets (1-4).

Sammie Coates caught six passes for a career-high 139 yards and two scores, including a 72-yard catch-and-run for a score on Pittsburgh’s opening drive as the Steelers (4-1) moved the ball at will against a secondary missing injured star Darrelle Revis.

Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell racked up 154 yards of total offense, including a career-high nine receptions, while Antonio Brown caught nine passes for 78 yards and a touchdown.

TITANS 30, DOLPHINS 17: At Miami Gardens, Florida, Marcus Mariota threw for three touchdowns and ran for another score, helping the Titans overcome a handful of big plays by the Dolphins.

DeMarco Murray added 121 yards rushing for the Titans, who totaled 235 on the ground. They improved to 2-3, and Miami fell to 1-4.

VIKINGS 31, TEXANS 13: At Minneapolis, Adam Thielen caught a touchdown pass to cap Minnesota’s opening drive and finished with a career-high 127 yards, and the Vikings defense flustered Brock Osweiler and the Texans (3-2).

The Raiders (4-1) took over with 2 minutes left and ran out most of the clock to get a third straight win for the first time in five years and hand San Diego its 10th straight division loss.

Cubs face tall task in Bumgarner, try to close out series

SAN FRANCISCO – Sure, Jake Arrieta and Joe Maddon know all about what Madison Bumgarner has done on the postseason stage in recent years.

Just how good the big lefty has been and his San Francisco Giants, too. They’re 9-0 in elimination games under manager Bruce Bochy, rallying from improbable deficits to win it all three times this decade – every other year, and this is one of those even years.

San Francisco’s October theme this time: “Beli-EVEN.” As the Cubs arrived Sunday in the Bay Area with a 2-0 NL Division Series lead and a chance to close out the home team, Maddon knows there’s plenty that still must go right for his club to move closer to ending its World Series curse.

“We’d be foolish to be overconfident about this situation,” Maddon said. “They’re really good; they’ve

done this before. That is a group that is just dripping with tested veterans and a manager that’s outstanding. So you never take the Giants for granted.

Never.”

The Cubs were in for an unexpected treat Sunday: The Blue Angels regularly buzzed by over the bay during Fleet Week as the Cubs wrapped up their afternoon work, with a few players and coaches stealing a glance up at the blue sky.

Maddon found himself reflecting on his youth when Bumgarner’s name was brought up before an on-field workout. The 2014 World Series MVP has thrown 23 straight scoreless innings in the postseason, going 2-0 with a save in elimination games.

“It’s like when I was a kid. I could only relate it to that. I was a Cardinals fan growing up, and seeing Bob Gibson do what he did in the ’60s and then Mr. Koufax, what he did. So you have to kind of draw the parallels or the comparisons from when you were a kid,” Maddon said.

“So I look at it as, ‘Wow, it’s just

like what Gibson did, it’s like what Koufax did.’ And maybe with Whitey Ford and the Yankees prior to that.

It’s unique. So I hope the kids that are really watching right now understand how good this guy is and how it parallels throughout baseball history, what he’s doing right now,” he said.

Bumgarner dazzled with a four-hitter last Wednesday in New York as the Giants eliminated the reigning NL champion New York Mets in the wildcard game. He did the same thing at Pittsburgh two years ago to get that championship run rolling.

Arrieta already has said he has no fear about this matchup, giving his respect to Bumgarner while also noting he’s “beatable.”

“He’s been one of the best in the postseason for the last several years.

We have got a challenge ahead of us, but we put ourselves in a really good position, obviously taking care of business at home with the opportunity to close the series out in three games and get back to Chicago and prepare,” Arrieta said. “He is tough,

but at the same time we have got pretty a potent offense that he has to try and neutralize.”

Trailing in a postseason series or being on the brink of going home for the offseason has hardly seemed to faze Bochy’s teams in recent history.

In 2012, the Giants became the first team to win three straight road games in a best-of-five series after dropping the first two in the division series at home to the Reds. San Francisco then rallied from a 3-1 deficit to beat St. Louis.

As brilliant as Bumgarner might be against the Cubs’ slugging lineup, the Giants must find a way to score runs – or a run if that’s all it takes in a likely pitchers’ duel – to extend their season by at least one more day. Arrieta won 22 games in 2015 and another 18 this season.

Both pitchers are capable hitters, adding to the intrigue of Monday’s matchup.

“I feel like we’ll attack each other accordingly,” Arrieta said, “and not take it lightly.”

Donaldson raced home from second base after second baseman Rougned Odor bounced a double-play relay in the 10th inning and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Texas Rangers 7-6 to sweep their AL Division Series on Sunday night.

Donaldson led off the 10th with a double into the right-center field gap, and then Matt Bush intentionally walked Edwin Encarnacion.

After Jose Bautista struck out, Russell Martin hit a grounder to shortstop Elvis Andrus, and Andrus tried to start a double play with a feed to Odor at second. Odor short-hopped his throw to first baseman Mitch Moreland and the ball skipped away, allowing Donaldson to dash home and beat Moreland’s throw with a dive across the plate.

Toronto is headed to the AL Championship Series after beating Texas in an ALDS for a second straight year and will face the winner of the Cleveland-Boston series. The Indians lead 2-0, with Game 3 scheduled for Monday following a postponement Sunday.

Kenyans Abel Kirui, Florence Kiplagat win Chicago Marathon: At Chicago, Abel

Kirui of Kenya pulled ahead of defending champion Dickson Chumba for good in the final mile to win the Chicago Marathon on Sunday.

Florence Kiplagat of Kenya won her second straight Chicago Marathon women’s title.

The men’s lead alternated between Kirui and Chumba for the last few miles.

The 34-year-old Kirui finished the 26.2mile course in an unofficial time of 2 hours, 11 minutes, 23 seconds.

Chumba finished in 2:11:26. The 29-year-old Kenyan won last year’s Chicago Marathon in 2:09:25 and finished third in 2014. The top five men’s finishers and top four women were all Kenyans.

Both the men’s and women’s winners won $100,000.

The top American finishers were DiGame 3 of Indians-Red Sox ALDS rained out, will play Monday: At Boston, Josh ego Estrada of Flagstaff, Arizona, and Tomlin is just fine waiting another day Serena Burla of Stafford, Virginia.

WASHINGTON – Jose Lobaton got the chance to play in the postseason because of a teammate’s late-September injury and, boy, did the little-used backup catcher make the most of it.

Lobaton hit a three-run homer, Daniel Murphy provided more-expected production by driving in a pair of insurance runs, and Washington’s bullpen threw 42/3 scoreless innings Sunday, leading the Nationals past the Los Angeles Dodgers, 5-2, in a rain-postponed Game 2 to even their NL Division Series at 1-all.

The Nationals trailed 2-0 in the fourth when No. 8 hitter Lobaton put them ahead for good by connecting off a curveball from Rich Hill after the Dodgers lefthander walked Murphy and hit a batter.

Hard to see this coming: Lobaton did not do much at the plate in 2016, batting .232 in only 99 at-bats overall, including 1 for 15 against lefties. Then again, that lone hit also was a homer, and also against the Dodgers – off Scott Kazmir in July.

Lobaton didn’t even start the playoff opener, in fact. He sat behind rookie Pedro Severino, who had played all of 18 games in the majors.

Murphy, in contrast, has been Washington’s best hitter all season, considered a top contender for league MVP honors.

Indeed, fans chanted those three letters after each hit as he went 3 for 3, including RBI singles in the fifth and seventh.

The Dodgers had gone ahead on Corey Seager’s second first-inning homer of the series and Josh Reddick’s run-scoring single in the third on a play at home in which Lobaton couldn’t hold onto Bryce Harper’s throw home from right. Both runs came against Tanner Roark, who lasted 41/3 innings. He allowed seven hits, both runs he gave up were earned and he walked three and struck out one batter in the no decision. Roark is a Wilmington graduate.

Five Nationals relievers did the rest, with Mark Melancon working around a single in the ninth – the lone hit allowed by the hosts’ bullpen – to earn the save.

Blake Treinen went 11/3 innings and got the win.

All in all, NL East champion Washington used the same formula that NL West winner LA did in Game 1 and, truly, all year: hit the ball over the fence and rely on shutdown relief.

AL Division Series against Boston. But instead of building on the success from the 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series, he will take the mound after both teams had extra rest.

Most studies have found a benefit. Even though testosterone is described as a “male” hormone, women also make testosterone – but in much lower amounts than men. It does stimulate desire in women as well as men, along with arousal and orgasm.

Another option, if your problem is not just physical, is sex therapy. A therapist can help you identify thoughts, feelings and behaviors that might be interfering with your sexual enjoyment. A therapist also will help you communicate your needs and enhance feelings of intimacy between you and your partner.

Dear Reader: Sex is complicated, but you probably already know that. Sexual desire surely resides in the head, but other parts of the body can affect desire as well. In particular, the genital organs communicate with the brain. Likewise, the brain communicates with the genital organs. Desire in the brain causes changes in the pelvic organs. Perceiving these changes can, in turn, enhance sexual desire.

There is a condition called sexual arousal disorder. Normally, a woman becomes aroused through thoughts and fantasies, touch, or a combination of these things. In response, blood flows to her pelvic area. This causes the genital tissues to swell and the vagina to moisten in readiness for sexual activity. With sexual arousal disorder, your mind desires sex, but your body does not follow suit.

Many things can cause or contribute to this disorder. Medical conditions such as hypothyroidism and diabetes can dampen sex drive. Medications, including antidepressants and anti-seizure drugs, can have sexual side effects. Emotional and psychological issues also can profoundly affect sexual desire – and performance.

Sexual arousal disorder in women often occurs after menopause, when estrogen levels drop. This can cause vaginal tissue to thin and secretions to decrease. Sex may become painful, resulting in less arousal. But even if sex is not painful, a woman may notice the absence of the pelvic changes that occur with increased blood flow and vaginal moistening.

That can put a further damper on desire.

What treatments are available to improve sexual desire and sexual function? For years, drug companies have been in search of a “female Viagra.” The idea is that increased

Please pay attention to where you are. The most important information we need is the address of the emergency. If you are on the highway, tell us the Interstate and closest mile marker, as well as your direction of travel.

Many people assume we can trace their number to their location. While that may be true for landline phones, it’s not for cellphones. Only the cellphone company can “ping” a phone.

I also would like to caution parents about letting their children play with a deactivated phone. If you want to let them play or practice, first REMOVE THE BATTERY. Many calls we receive come from kids playing on a deactivated phone, and we are unable to call those numbers back to verify whether there’s a legitimate emergency. These calls also tie up emergency lines for people who have a genuine emergency, making them wait longer for their call to be answered.

My last comment is this: If you dial 911 by accident, please tell the dispatcher it was an accident. We never get angry if someone inadvertently dials us. Our job is to make sure the public is OK. If it was accidental, say so.

Otherwise, we must call back to make sure there is not an emergency.

Those of us in this profession do this job not because we are getting rich, but because we want to help people. We are the most important link in getting people the help they need, but we cannot do it without knowing where the emergency is. Thanks for getting the word out. –

To make four hearts, declarer’s timing must be perfect after West leads the spade queen. For the energetic, which lead from West would have defeated the contract?

South certainly could have taken the bidding slower, but jumping to four hearts with such a self-sufficient suit was eminently reasonable. (Note that five diamonds goes down after a spade lead.)

South wishes to draw trumps and run the diamonds for his contract.

But this spade lead is annoying. If declarer takes the first trick, he can ruff a spade on the board, but he would have four unavoidable losers: two spades, one heart and one club.

Instead, South must let West hold the first trick.

Suppose West now shifts to a diamond. What must declarer do?

If South takes the trick and attacks trumps, a second diamond from West cuts declarer off from the dummy. Instead, South must win with his diamond king, ruff a spade in the dummy, and drive out the club ace.

Then, he can win the next diamond trick on the board and discard his remaining spade on the club queen.

He loses only one spade, one heart and one club.

An initial diamond lead is lethal, assuming the defenders persevere with a second diamond when next on play.

Section 4: That this ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage, approval and publication as provided by law. That, further, a certified copy of this ordinance shall be published at least once after passage, in a newspaper published or circulated in said Library District.

Section 5: That to the extent permitted by law, all unexpended balances not applied in the manner set forth above in this ordinance, or unexpended balances not applied as provided in prior Budget and Appropriation Ordinances of the District, shall be transferred to the Special Reserve Fund known as the Building Fund created by Ordinance No. 33 of the Library District.

Section 6: This Ordinance, to the extent of its validity, supersedes any prior District ordinance inconsistencies related to the matters contained herein.
