D-86 officials seeking technician for growing support needs

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet School District 86 officials are looking to add at least one technician to help with growing technology support needs.

At Wednesday’s board meeting, John Armstrong, the district’s technology and information services director, said as the district adds more technology, the number of help desk tickets from staff for support will continue to increase. The increase of computer devices is part of the district’s strategic plan.

Since the 2013-14 school year, the number of computer devices has increased from 2,442 to 7,135 and the number of tickets went from 3,196 to 4,236 last school year, according to Armstrong’s presentation to the board.

This school year, the amount of tickets is at more than 2,470. On average, it takes about 10 days to close a ticket, Armstrong said.

“If I’m a teacher in a classroom and my projector lightbulb has gone out and I have to wait two weeks to get it fixed, then we’re not supporting that classroom as we need

He said in 2011, an analysis of the district’s technology department showed that the amount of work exceeded the number of staff, which has not increased since that year, he said.

“I have a great staff. … But we’re kind of in a reactive mode where it’s hard to be proactive and move forward when we’re swamped with the reaction,” Armstrong said.

He said the technology department’s immediate need is at least one more technician.

Superintendent Theresa Rouse said the district will need to post the position and re-

ceive applications. She said she hopes to get the position posted by the end of the week.

“The reality is for a district this size that has so few technicians and so many devices and software support is a little scary,” Rouse said during Armstrong’s presentation.

During the rest of his presentation, Armstrong went over the structure of the department, its work and accomplishments.

More than 11,000 hardware devices are deployed and supported at the district, which includes more than 7,000 computer devices and 800 wireless access points.

Among the list of accomplishments under the department since 2011 include the launch of a new website, a smartphone app, printing costs reduced by 50 percent, piloting of Google Apps for Education and a high student-to-device ratio.

This year, every school in District 86 – with the exception of Marycrest Early Childhood Center – is at a 3:1 or better student-to-device ratio, which means three students to every one computer device available, Armstrong said.

“We’ve never had a ratio that good. That really puts us another step down the road toward 1:1,” he said.

Brandon bridge reopens in Joliet; future of Cass project uncertain

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The completion date of the Cass Street bridge project is unclear, but the state did reopen the Brandon Road bridge Wednesday.

Both drawbridges have been closed for maintenance, although the Brandon Road bridge had only been closed since Sept. 22.

The Cass Street bridge was closed July 18 for a painting and cleaning project estimated to be done in the fall.

But Joliet Public Works Director James Trizna said an IDOT engineer last week advised city officials that if the paint work is not done in November, the bridge could be reopened for the winter with the job being finished when weather warms up again next year.

bridge before winter in 2015. That bridge reopened for the winter before being closed again in the spring so crews could finish the work. The job was done in June.

“They’re saying they’re looking to have [Cass Street] done a little earlier than Thanksgiving because then it gets cold,” Trizna said. “I think if they don’t get it done by mid-November, they’ll have to reopen it and close it again in the spring.

They can’t paint in the winter.”

The Cass Street bridge, like the Jefferson Street bridge, is being painted from the deck down. The entire bridge is not being painted.

Construction underway on new Will County Public Safety Complex

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET TOWNSHIP – When the Will County Sheriff’s Office facility at Laraway Road and Route 52 opened in 1973, Sheriff Joseph Trizna was quoted as saying, “We haven’t even moved into this facility yet and we’ve already outgrown it.”

Forty-three years later, Sheriff Mike Kelley chuckled at Trizna’s thoughts and recalled when he found out the building was expected to be replaced.

“I was a 21-year-old snot-nosed kid who got hired in 1988, and when I walked in the door for the first time, they were all talking about how we needed a new facility,” Kelley said.

“I can’t believe this day has finally come.”

After years of planning, earth was being moved Wednesday during a groundbreaking ceremony for the $30 million Will County Public Safety Complex, which will be located near the existing sheriff’s facility and will house the sheriff’s offices and a 911 dispatch center.

For years, the sheriff’s staff and deputies have operated out of the current Laraway Road building and double-wide trailers parked on that property, as well as space in the Will County Courthouse, the Will County Farm Bureau, a small station near Crete and the Eagle and Emco buildings in downtown Joliet. Administration and investigations were moved last year into the First Midwest Bank building.

Kelley said the new facility will accommodate all the different divisions of the sheriff’s office – although the Crete station will remain open, and the civil process office will stay at the courthouse.

“It’s almost like your kids moving out; eventually they come back home,” Kelley said. “Having everyone under the same roof will save time, increase communication and build stronger relationships between divisions.”

The complex also will store more than 49,000 pieces of evidence using state-of-the-art security, Kelley said.

Five years ago, intruders snuck onto the current sheriff’s facility property and were able to steal heroin from a metal shipping container in the impound lot.

foot building. The rest will be occupied by the consolidated 911 dispatch center

and administrative offices of the Will County Emergency Telephone Sys-

tem Board. As a result of the unfunded state mandate to consolidate 911 call centers, emergency services for more than 30 communities will be dispatched from the complex, Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr. said.

Walsh also noted 28 trade contracts have been awarded on the project thus far, 14 of them to contractors based in Will County.

The sheriff’s facility is scheduled to open in spring 2018, but Capital Improvements Committee Chairwoman Ragan Freitag, R-Wilmington, said accelerating that schedule could allow for an earlier start on building the new Will County Courthouse.

County Board Speaker Jim Moustis, R-Frankfort, said Saturday shifts during work on the sheriff’s facility in cold-weather months would allow the county to avoid rising construction costs if the $200 million courthouse is delayed.

Joliet utility bills late again

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Utility bills went out late for a second consecutive month as the city of Joliet works with a new software program that officials say eventually will have advantages for customers.

The city has just begun to mail September bills, which follows an August billing that was delayed because of the new software system.

“There were some bugs in the new billing system that we needed to work on,” Utilities Director James Eggen said. “We didn’t want to send out bills with errors in them.”

The city sent out a news release

Wednesday about the late September bills. September bills for water and sewer use are being mailed in October, the news release stated.

The city also emphasized that a late fee will not be charged.

The news release notes that while the latest bills contain a statement that there is a 10 percent late fee charged after 15 days, “The city will not charge that late fee for any bills issued with a billing date in the month of October.”

City Council member Jan Quillman, however, said she was concerned about confusion with late fees and whether they would be applied to the bills that went out late in August and September.

“I’ve been getting calls since Au-

gust,” Quillman said. “Until we get this in sync with our system, it’s not up to the citizen to pay that late fee.”

The city has replaced a 20-year-old software system built in-house, Eggen said.

“The computer language was obsolete, and it was getting hard to get people to debug the program,” he said.

“We want a system that the company is going to be able to stand behind and maintain. That, and we’re looking at developing portals where people are going to be able to go online and look at their usage history.”

As the new Munis software billing system was implemented, Eggen said, there were concerns whether it communicated effectively with a sep-

arate system that reads water meters to determine how much individual households and businesses should be charged.

“I think they finally worked that out, and bills are going out now,” he said.

The billing problems came at the same time that the City Council has been reviewing an increase in water and sewer rates.

The City Council this week approved a 7 percent increase that will take effect in November. Rates will go up again by 7 percent in 2017 and 2018.

The news release from the city said customers can check on the current amounts owed on their utility bills by calling 815-724-3820.

Will County, state officials celebrate new Workforce Center location

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The new location for the Workforce Center of Will County was unveiled Wednesday.

Inside the new state-of-the-art center at 2400 Glenwood Avenue were spaces for classrooms, computer labs and a resource room.

The center is part of the Workforce Services Division of Will County, which helps people find jobs and helps businesses find workers.

“Basically, if you’re looking for a job, you need to come here,” said Susan Flessner, Workforce Services Division administrative manager.

Flessner was joined by many local elected officials and leaders in Will County at a ceremony Wednesday to celebrate the new location at a building that also will be occupied by the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

Also in attendance were representatives from state departments such as the employment security department and the Illinois Department of Human Services.

“It’s truly an honor to be in this beautiful building,” Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr. said.

The Workforce Services Division shows Will County knows “how to get it done,” said John Grueling, Will County Center for Economic Development president and CEO, who also is the Workforce Investment Board of Will County chairman.

“We do matter. We know how to deliver. We provide a high level of services to both our employers and our employees,” he said.

Randy Fletcher, Joliet Junior College vice president of academic affairs, spoke about the partnership between the college and the Workforce Services Division.

He said skilled and technical training is primary to the mission of JJC. “Our partnership with the Workforce Center of Will County continues to ensure career awareness and industry-specific preparation of our citizens, which results in a strong and sustainable workforce in our community for a long time to come,” Fletcher said.

Plainfield trustees debate input on policymaking

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – More than half of the Plainfield Village Board meeting Monday was devoted to trustee and public comments.

At the beginning of the meeting, Trustees Ed O’Rourke and Jim Racich argued after O’Rourke’s remarks in response to a Sept. 22 incident in which a Plainfield North High School freshman was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of 248th Avenue and 119th Street while riding her bicycle.

In a video of the meeting posted on YouTube by the village, O’Rourke said that residents had since called and spoken about the lack of sidewalk continuity in the area.

“Part of my concern is the input of the board,” O’Rourke said. “I think it’s part of us to have input on policy, and I don’t know that we’re getting a lot of that input. So in other words, if there’s sidewalks to be installed and we’re spending over $1 million, maybe it’s worthwhile

to have a little bit more discussion on where that money gets spent.”

Racich responded in the video that under Robert’s Rules of Order, no one has ever censored or stopped O’Rourke or any board members from speaking on a matter.

“You could’ve had all the opportunity in the world to discuss a situation like that,” Racich said to O’Rourke in the video. “I don’t think anyone here has ever stifled anyone. If you have a situation that is disgruntling, you should discuss it – not only with the administration but bring it up to the board.”

The conversation went back and forth for a couple minutes, before Racich said to O’Rourke that he was only rebutting what O’Rourke said about the village administration and board.

“It’s a disparaging remark, made not only to the administration but to this entire trustee board,” Racich said.

O’Rourke then responded, “I’ll ask you Mr. Racich, how easy is it to get something on the agenda? A topic on the agenda?”

“Bring it up with the administration,” Racich replied.

After 25 minutes of trustee and public comments, the board then unanimously: • Approved the purchase of up to 6,000 tons of road salt from Compass Minerals America Inc. at a unit price of $45.58 a ton. Village Administrator Brian Murphy said it’s the lowest price per ton the village has paid in at least nine years.

The village paid $107 a ton two years ago, he said.

• Approved snow removal services and unit prices from K&D Enterprises Landscaping, Winninger Excavating Inc., Antrex Inc., Acres Group, John Green Excavating Company, Shreve Services, Fazio Landscaping and Baish Excavating for the 2016-17 winter season.

• Approved a variance for a monument sign at St. Mary’s Immaculate Parish on Route 59 in excess of the village’s current maximum height and area limits.

Coffee with JTHS superintendent to be held

JOLIET – Joliet Township High School Superintendent Cheryl McCarthy and board of education Vice President Tracy Spesia will host the next Coffee and Community Conversation from 7 to 8 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Spanish Community Center, 309 N. Eastern Ave. in Joliet.

The event is the second of a series of conversations that will be held throughout the year where the community can meet board of education members, key JTHS leaders and the superintendent, according to a news release from the district.

Crest Hill is home to one of two memorials in the U.S. for the town, Soliman said.

“It’s been a tradition in this city that former mayors have streets named after them,” Soliman said Wednesday.

He said Churnovic was responsible for the addition of a rose garden and benches to the memorial, so it only made sense that the new road intersecting with Churnovic’s namesake be named for Lidice.

“He made a tremendous aesthetic improvement to the Lidice memorial,” Soliman said.

Also Monday, the council voted to approve a planned unit development from Jarper Properties LLC for seven duplex buildings northeast of Division Street and Zausa Drive.

Soliman said Tuesday the property has been vacant 10 years. The city tried to market it as a business site, but did not receive any interest in the location in that capacity.

The townhomes will be built along a new road called Renaissance Court to be established as part of the development, McGuire said.

Soliman said Wednesday he anticipates construction will begin in the spring.

Alderwoman Candi Thuringer cast the sole vote against the project. She said Wednesday the reason for her vote was prior issues the city has encountered with planned unit developments, but declined to elaborate.

Joliet Pizza Hut robbed by gunmen

A holdup alarm at 10:36 p.m. sent police to the carryout restaurant at 1156 W. Jefferson St. in Joliet, Joliet Deputy Chief Al Roechner said.

“The store manager and two employees were in the store when three men

entered through a side door and announced, ‘This is a robbery,’ ” Roechner said.

One of the intruders pointed a silver handgun at the manager and told him to open the register. After taking the cash, the bandits ordered the employees into the freezer and fled. No one was injured.

The three robbers were black men in their late teens or early 20s, according to police reports.

CREST HILL – Division Street is seeing some changes.

Two new roads near the street opened last week, Mayor Ray Soliman said Tuesday, and a townhome development off Division Street also has been approved.

The City Council unanimously voted at its meeting Monday to name the new roads, which Soliman said will improve traffic flow and safety in the area of the Crest Hill Business Park.

The roads will be called Churnovic Lane and Lidice Parkway.

Churnovic Lane intersects with Division Street from the south, and is located in the business park area, about a quarter mile west of Enterprise Boulevard, Soliman said. Lidice Parkway is the east-west road that connects Churnovic Lane with Enterprise Boulevard.

A new traffic signal has been installed at Division Street and Churnovic Lane, and the signal once at Division Street and Enterprise Boulevard has been taken down, Soliman said. Enterprise Boulevard now operates as a northbound one-way road for traffic to exit the business park.

Construction on the project started in June, Soliman said.

The cost for the new roads and signal was $1.372 million, according to Interim City Administrator Heather McGuire, who said the project was funded by a 50 percent match grant from the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program, as well as motor fuel tax and non-home rule sales tax moneys.

The new roads are named for Crest Hill’s fifth mayor, Nick Churnovic, and the city’s Lidice memorial at Prairie Avenue and Hosmer Lane, Soliman said.

Blood Run to bring Halloween to downtown Joliet If you go

The Blood Run 5K returns at 9 a.m.

Saturday to downtown Joliet.

Costumes are encouraged for the Halloween-themed event, which raises funds for the Will-Grundy Medical Clinic. The run will feature a costume contest, which is new this year.

“It gives you a chance to show off your costume,” said Shawn West, executive director of the clinic.

Saturday will mark the clinic’s ninth annual run, and the third year the event has had the Blood Run name, which fits with the Halloween season and the event’s emphasis on heart health.

The event also will include a 1K kids’ run, which will start at 8:30 a.m.

West said about 100 participants are expected for the Blood Run, and the clinic’s goal for the event is to

“I met one kid in Massachusetts who cuts himself all the time,” Chapman said. “I talked to him for a half hour, and he emails me now.”

Chapman wakes up about 5 a.m. daily and is walking by 6 a.m. so he can get his 30 miles in for the day, finishing by 6 p.m., when he has to find a place to stay. He’s stayed in train stations, truck stops, under a bridge and even taken naps at Planet Fitness after grabbing a shower.

“I sleep everywhere. I joined Planet Fitness for $20 a month so I could use the shower and the massage chair,” he said. “I ask if I can sleep there for a couple hours. Sometimes they let me, sometimes they say no.”

Chapman spent Corn Festival weekend at home in Morris to be with his mother on the anniversary of his dad’s death. The next leg of his journey will be to California along the old Route 66.

MORRIS – Dan Chapman of Morris decided to go on a walk in July.

The 38-year-old flew to Portland, Maine, on July 18, to see a lighthouse that was on his dad’s bucket list. He returned home Friday to Morris after walking 1,138 miles, going through three pairs of shoes to get home.

“I decided to walk from Maine to California to raise awareness for mental health and raise money,” Chapman said. “I’m doing it for myself, too.”

Chapman has battled depression for most of his life. After losing his job in 2010, he fell into a deeper, darker depression, and he said he no longer cared if he lived or died.

His father, Dale, walked into the family home in Morris and found him on the floor unconscious. A trip to the emergency room found his blood sugar level was at a staggering 1,440.

His father and mother, Lynda, were told he wouldn’t make it, but he did.

In October 2015, he was home when his father had a massive heart attack that took his life.

“I witnessed it. It motivated me to do this journey,” Chapman said.

The walk is symbolic of the jour-

neatly packed into a green backpack with two water bottles, two walking sticks and an American flag he was given along the way attached to it.

He hopes to be in California by Christmas Day to celebrate by jumping in the ocean.

He has found planning how far and where he would get each day was not an easy task.

He was told by state troopers in a couple of states that he couldn’t walk along the interstate, so he started a lot of zig-zagging and walked extra miles.

He started out with a cart and another bag, but ditched those due to the extra weight they added to his trip.

As he shares his story with people, he takes a photo of them with his sign. He hopes to have 1 million people photographed with the sign by the end of his walk; he has about 1,000 now.

He said he posts a live video chat every couple of days when walking, and he calls his mother nightly to let her know he’s OK. He said coming home for Corn Festival gave him the motivation he needed to finish.

“There have been a lot of days I wanted to quit. Then I look on Facebook and someone messages me and gives me hope,” he said.

Police later interviewed Janulis at his home in the 700 block of Fulton Street in Wilmington and submitted a report to the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office, Arnold said. On Friday, Janulis was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and threatening a school.

“In this day and age, you just can’t say anything like that,” Arnold said.

“We’re going to take the safety of our kids and our schools very seriously.”

Sister M. Cecilia Adamic, age 102, passed into eternity on Oct. 3, 2016. Sister was an 86-year member of the School Sisters of St. Francis of Christ the King (Lemont Franciscans).

Born in Joliet on May 7, 1914, Sister was preceded in death by her parents, John and Anne (nee Grebenc); and her siblings, John, Frank, Sister M. Cherubim, Julia, Edward, Henry and Raymond Adamic.

She is survived by her brothers, Father Albert Adamic and Walter Adamic; and many loving nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews.

Her wake will take place at Alvernia Manor Chapel (Lemont) from 3 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2016, with a 7 p.m. prayer service.

LILLIAN J. ADAMIC Lillian J. Adamic (nee Potochnic), age 90, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2016, surrounded by her loving family.

Mom loved working at Al Baskin and later Mark Shale. She cooked short order in her kitchen and always had a plate ready for anyone who wandered by. In her later years, she passed time knitting scarves for family and friends. Lillian was a techie, doing email, playing Words with Friends and talking on Skype.

DORIS M. CARTELLI Doris M. Cartelli, nee Williams, age 92. Passed away peacefully, Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2016, at her home with her loving family by her side.

Doris was a lifetime resident of Joliet. Graduated from Joliet Township High School in 1942.

She worked at Barrett Wholesale as switchboard operator, later advancing to secretary to the president. She had a beautiful soprano voice and sang at over 50 weddings. A member of Rural Chorus for many years. She was the first female owner of a union plumbing shop in Joliet, Cartelli Plumbing & Heating. Raised her three children as single mom most of her life after her husband passed. Member of Willow Avenue Presbyterian Church from birth until 1981, where she sang in the choir, served as deacon, and was a 60-year member of B.Y.K.O.T.A. (Be Ye Kind One To Another-Ephesians 4:32) and then transitioned to Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she was currently a member and served on the mail crew.

She loved to spend time with family, traveling, an avid jeopardy watcher, and had a unique ability to spell any word forward and backward until two days prior to her passing. A fan and loyal supporter of the Joliet American Legion Band where she enjoyed watching two of her children and one grandson perform.

He received an Act of Heroism Award from the General Assembly in 1966 for saving the life of a child. He was one of the founding members of CECO Recreation Club, where he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was also a member of the Belmont Club and Moose Club. He enjoyed watching sports, fishing, spending time with his family and watching his grandchildren in their various activities.

He was looking forward to the birth of his first great-grandchild.

LONDON – Rod Temperton, a British-born musician and songwriter with a singular knack for pop-funk who wrote the Michael Jackson classics “Thriller,” “Rock With You” and many other hits, has died of cancer in London at age 66.

His music publisher said in a statement Wednesday that Temperton had died last week of an “aggressive” cancer. No other details were provided.

Temperton was a native of the seaside town of Cleethorpes, 180 miles north of London. He had been working in a frozen fish factory in the mid-1970s when he responded to an ad and joined Heatwave, an international group for whom he played keyboards and wrote two major hits, the disco favorite “Boogie Nights” and the ballad “Always and Forever.”

“Always and Forever” attracted wide attention and was later covered by Luther Vandross, among others.

His work with Heatwave attracted the attention of Jones, who was then working with Jackson.

Temperton revealed a gift for both fast and slow numbers, whether the easygoing “Rock with You” or the sci-fi funk of the title track from “Thriller.”

Temperton also received an Oscar nomination as a co-writer of “Miss Celie’s Blues (Sister),” from the soundtrack of “The Color Purple,” and contributed several songs to the Billy Crystal-Gregory Hines comedy “Running Scared.”

CHICAGO – The Chicago City Council on Wednesday approved Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s plan to create a new agency to investigate police shootings and misconduct allegations, even as critics – some on the council – said it’s not strong enough to closely watch a police force long dogged by a reputation for brutality and covering up misdeeds of officers.

Over the objections of some aldermen and several people in the audience who angrily shouted their displeasure, the council voted, 39-8, to form a new agency to investigate the police force called the Civilian Office of Police Accountability and create a new deputy inspector whose job will be to monitor the department.

“Obviously, Chicago ain’t ready for reform,” said Alderwoman Leslie Hairston, who voted against the plan after complaining that it won’t have enough funding and independence from City Hall.

Same-day voter registration likely to go on, supporters say

CHICAGO – Same-day voter registration likely will be available at certain Illinois polling stations for the Nov. 8 election, election officials and civil rights groups said Wednesday in the wake of this week’s appeals court ruling, although Republican-affiliated groups remain hopeful they still can block the provision by then.

The stay by the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which occurred late Tuesday, temporarily cancels a lower-court ruling that halted poll-level registration for voters because of what the judge said was discrimination against rural GOP-leaning areas of the state. But the full appeal still is pending, so Republicans may have a victory before

and activists want” and that it’s not any more transparent than the Independent Police Review Authority, which was discredited by long delays in completing investigations that almost always sided with officers.

But Emanuel echoed several aldermen, saying the plan is not perfect but a significant step in a city where faith in the police department was shattered last year by a video showing a white police officer fatally shoot black teenager Laquan McDonald in 2014 and allegations that officers tried to cover up what happened.

“I consider this to be the beginning

Thomson prison expected to be fully operational in 2017

THOMSON – U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin said a western Illinois federal prison will be fully operational starting late next year.

Durbin visited Thomson Administrative U.S. Penitentiary on Tuesday. He said progress is being made on the facility, but that much work remains to be done.

As a federal maximum-security prison, Thomson is expected to house up to 2,800 federal inmates from around the country and create about 100 more jobs.

Obama to raise cash in Chicago for Clinton, Duckworth

CHICAGO – President Barack Obama will be in Chicago this weekend to raise money for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign and Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth’s bid for U.S. Senate.

Obama will travel to his hometown Friday, when fundraisers are planned for Clinton and for Democrats in the U.S. House.

He’ll attend a campaign event Sunday for Duckworth, who is challenging Republican Sen. Mark Kirk.

The Senate race will help determine whether Democrats retake the majority in the Senate.

Northwestern U. chemistry professor wins Nobel Prize

EVANSTON – A professor at Northwestern University is one of three scientists honored with this year’s Nobel Prize for chemistry.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences early Tuesday said that Fraser Stoddart will share the $930,000 prize with Frenchman Jean-Pierre Sauvage and Dutch scientist Bernard “Ben” Feringa.

The award was given for the “design and synthesis of molecular machines.”

The 74-year-old professor teaches chemistry at the school.

His daughter said he’s “absolutely ecstatic” about the honor.

Northwestern President Morton Schapiro said it’s a “tremendous honor” for the school and Stoddart, whom he called a “pioneer.”

Stoddart is the second professor from Northwestern University’s chemistry department to win the Nobel Prize. The late John A. Pople received the award in 1998.

BOSTON – A former Marine sergeant who underwent a double arm transplant said Wednesday that the best part about having arms again is that he can hold his fiancee’s hand and pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a chef.

Retired Sgt. John Peck, who lost all four limbs as the result of an explosion of a homemade bomb in Afghanistan in May 2010, underwent 14 hours of surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in August. The procedure involved 60 doctors, nurses and other medical personnel.

His arms are scarred and move awkwardly, but every day with the new limbs is better, he said at a news conference at the hospital.

Paris climate agreement to take effect Nov. 4

UNITED NATIONS – The landmark Paris agreement on climate change will enter into force Nov. 4, after being pushed past a key threshold Wednesday by a coalition of the world’s largest polluters and small island nations threatened by rising seas.

Officials: Police stabbing might be terror-related

BRUSSELS – A knife-wielding man stabbed two police officers in Brussels on Wednesday in an attack that might be terror-related, Belgian prosecutors said.

It was the latest attack on law enforcement officials in a nation that has been on high alert since 32 people were killed March 22 in suicide bombing attacks on the Brussels airport and subway.

Two officers in the Schaerbeek neighborhood were attacked at noon on the street by a man with a knife, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.

Another police patrol overpowered the man, who was shot in the leg before the suspect, identified as 43-year-old Belgian native Hicham D., was arrested.

State-run broadcaster RTBF said the assailant stabbed one officer in the neck, the other in the abdomen and broke the nose of the third officer, who shot him.

Prosecutor’s office spokesman Eric Van Der Sypt said the incident might be terror-related, but he declined to explain why.

Hurricane hits Bahamas as Haiti tries to dig out

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Rescue workers in Haiti struggled to reach isolated towns on Haiti’s southern peninsula and learn the full extent of the death and destruction caused by Hurricane Matthew as the powerful storm lashed at the Bahamas on Wednesday and triggered large-scale evacuations along the U.S. East Coast.

At least 16 deaths were blamed on the hurricane during its weeklong march across the Caribbean, 10 of them in Haiti. Marie Alta Jean-Baptiste, head of Haiti’s civil protection agency, announced Wednesday that Haiti’s confirmed death toll had doubled from five to 10.

But with a key bridge washed out, roads impassable and phone communications down, the western tip of Haiti has been largely cut off a day after Matthew made landfall, and there was no full accounting of the dead and injured in its wake.

But Jean-Baptiste indicated that her agency was starting to get a better handle about what happened in hard-hit Grande Anse department on Haiti’s southern peninsula and expected to soon release more information about what rescuers were finding.

After moving past Haiti, Matthew rolled across a corner of Cuba and began pounding the southern Bahamas with heavy wind and rain.

Weakening a bit, it had maximum sustained

winds of 115 mph by Wednesday night as it spun on a course expected to take it near the capital city of Nassau during the night. It was expected to regain strength overnight.

Forecasters said the storm could hit Florida – or come dangerously close – Thursday evening and then sideswipe the East Coast all the way up to the Carolinas over the weekend. Matthew could become the first major hurricane to blow ashore in the U.S. since Wilma slashed across Florida in 2005, killing five people.

Nearly 2 million people along the lower East Coast were urged to evacuate their homes.

“If you’re able to go early, leave now,” Florida Gov. Rick Scott warned.

On Tuesday, Matthew swept across a remote area of Haiti with 145 mph winds, wrecking homes and swamping roads. But government leaders in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere said they weren’t close to fully gauging the effect in the flood-prone nation where less powerful storms have killed thousands.

“What we know is that many, many houses have been damaged. Some lost rooftops and they’ll have to be replaced, while others were totally destroyed,” Interior Minister Francois Anick Joseph said.

Late Wednesday afternoon, the U.S. military announced that a small advance team would start preparing for the arrival of roughly 100 military personnel and nine helicopters currently in the Cayman Islands.

Campaign to give workers paid sick leave gains momentum

NEW YORK – The campaign to give workers paid time off when they’re sick is picking up momentum.

A bill that would give workers for the Illinois county that includes Chicago one hour of paid sick time for each 40 hours they work was up for a vote Wednesday. Sick leave referendums are on the November ballot in Arizona and Washington state. Proposals are also expected to be voted on soon in Duluth, Minnesota, and Albuquerque, New Mexico, said Ellen Bravo, executive director of Family Values @ Work, an organization that advocates for paid sick leave.

Most companies do give their employees paid time off when they’re sick.

The Labor Department estimates that last year, 61 percent of workers in private companies got sick time averaging six to 10 days a year. But there’s no federal law mandating that all companies give staffers paid leave, and those businesses that don’t tend to be very small, often with blue-collar workers.

The move toward paid sick leave has accelerated in the past three years as 30 states, counties and cities approved laws, according to Bravo’s group. All told, 37 jurisdictions have such laws, starting with San Francisco in 2006 and now other places like New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Diego and Minneapolis-St. Paul. Connecticut, California, Massachusetts, Oregon and Vermont also have laws.

These measures tend to have an impact at smaller companies that are less likely than mid-size or large enterprises to offer sick leave. They generally allow workers to accrue sick time according to the number of hours they work each week. Many grant workers five days off a year.

“They’re not coming to work in the middle of the flu and getting everyone else sick,” she says.

But there’s opposition to the laws.

Some small business advocacy groups say mandatory paid sick leave can drive up companies’ expenses — for example, if they have to hire replacement workers. Bills introduced in Congress

to mandate paid sick leave have failed.

President Barack Obama signed an executive order requiring companies with contracts or subcontracts with the federal government to give workers up to seven paid sick days each year.

That order takes effect Jan. 1.

Very small companies with manual or industrial jobs are the most likely to not offer paid sick leave, says David Lewis, CEO of OperationsInc, a human resources provider based in Norwalk, Connecticut. Owners may be cashstrapped.

“A lot of these companies are incapable of offering what they view as a luxury-type of benefit,” Lewis says.

Owners with staffers in different states or cities and who are required

to provide sick leave in some locations may decide to give everyone the same benefit, even though that may increase expenses.

Emily LaRusch has one employee in California, and 10 scattered among Florida, Texas and Arizona, which don’t have sick leave laws. She used to give staffers 10 days off to be used for illness or vacation. In light of the California law, she has added three sick days for everyone.

“If this one person gets preferential treatment for sick time, vacation, I couldn’t do it for that one and not for the rest of the team,” says LaRusch, owner of Back Office Betties, which provides receptionist services like remote phone answering.

LaRusch says sick time raises her expenses by $4,000 a year, a lot of money for a small company. But she recognizes that by providing sick time, she’s making her business more competitive in an industry not known for giving generous benefits.

Rocana, which creates systems to monitor computers and other technology, has about 60 workers in about two dozen states, including some with sick leave laws. The company gives workers unlimited vacation and sick leave – they take as many days as they need, and the company keeps track of what category each one falls into. Managers believe it’s a good policy for employee relations, and it also has made it easier to comply with the varying sick leave laws, Chief Financial Officer Steve Wietrecki says.

In places with sick leave laws, companies must also report to the government how much time staffers accrue and take. Giving staffers more time than the law mandates doesn’t relieve companies of that duty. Many companies ask their payroll providers to handle the paperwork.

“It’s a minor burden,” Wietrecki says.

U.S. services companies report fastest growth pace in nearly year

WASHINGTON – U.S. services companies grew last month at the fastest pace in nearly a year, potential good news for the U.S. economy.

The Institute for Supply Management said Wednesday that its services index jumped to 57.1 in September, the highest point since October, from August’s 51.4, the lowest since 2010.

It was the biggest monthly gain since the index was introduced in 2008. Any

reading above 50 signals growth.

New orders, production and export orders all grew faster last month, and hiring by services companies was the strongest since October.

“August’s drop was a fluke,” Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, wrote in a research note. He noted that the August reading might have been warped by flooding in Louisiana and Mississippi.

The ISM is a trade group of purchasing managers. Its services survey

covers businesses that employ the vast majority of workers, including retail, health care and financial companies.

Services firms have now grown for 80 straight months and have been a source of strength in an economy that has registered lackluster growth since late last year.

Overall, the American economy has been struggling since late last year, growing at an annual pace of just 1.4 percent from April through June after eking out annualized gains of 0.8 percent the first three months

of 2016 and 0.9 percent in the fourth quarter of 2015. Business investment has dropped three straight quarters, pulled down by cutbacks in the energy industry.

The job market has been stronger: Employers have added an average of 204,000 jobs a month for the past year, and the unemployment rate is a low 4.9 percent. The solid labor market is supporting healthy consumer spending, which expanded at a 4.3 percent annual rate from April through June, the fastest pace since the end of 2014.

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A year ago, Lincoln-Way Central’s girls golf team hoped to capture its first regional title in 20 years and easily did so, taking first by 18 strokes with a score of 325 at Wedgewood.

On Wednesday, the Knights entered

the same event with much bigger goals and fared even better. Playing again at Wedgewood in the Class 2A Joliet Central Regional, they posted a 309 to claim top honors by 28 strokes, their first back-to-back regional titles since 1994-95.

Now, coach Brian Shannon’s Knights have set their sights on doing something the program last accom-

plished in 1976, which is qualifying as a team for the state finals.

They’ll get that chance Tuesday in the Lockport Sectional at Broken Arrow.

The top three finishers also were the same as a year ago, and as in the team race, last year’s champion won by an even bigger margin.

Central sophomore Brianne Bolden

repeated as regional champion after firing a 33 on both nines to finish with a six-under 66. Providence Catholic senior Alyssa Gromala was next with a 73, while Central sophomore Grace Curran shot a 74 to claim third place.

Bolden beat Gromala by three strokes in last year’s regional.

Big crowd on hand to watch quality teams run under the lights

Shaw Media correspondent NAPERVILLE - It was like a scene from a movie scripted in Hollywood. The weather was perfect, the music was loud and over 2,000 spectators were cheering - it wasn’t a football game - it was a cross country meet under the lights.

On Wednesday, The Naperville Running Company hosted the annual high school twilight cross country meet at Naperville North.

In the deepest girls cross country meet of the year, that included the four top ranked teams in the state – No. 1 Glenbard West, No. 2 Yorkville, No. 3 Naperville North and Mo. 4 Minooka – and others including No. 6 Wheaton Warrenville South, No. 11 Metea Valley and No. 13 Hinsdale Central, the race was as close to a state preview as you will see all season.

The boys race had four ranked teams in No. 1 Neuqua Valley, No. 3 Downers Grove North, No. 7 Hinsdale Central and No. 16 Minooka. Plainfield North also was entered in the field.

The three-mile races started on the

North campus at the corner of Mill St. and 5th Avenue. The runners looped around campus, ran a lap on the track just after the mile mark, went back out to the North campus and then finished down the middle of the football field in front of the loud, boisterous crowd.

The girls race did not disappoint. It was just as exciting as all the pre-meet build up thought it could be. The state rankings also will change in a closely-contested battle.

Naperville North won with 74 points, but was followed closely by Minooka with 78 points. Yorkville (84) was third, followed by Glenbard West (87) and Wheaton Warrenville South (100), who took fifth.

The Indians were led by the 3-4-5 finish of Emily Shelton (17:06), Mackenzie Callahan (17:09) and Ashley Tutt (17:21). Vivian Van Eck placed 22nd in 18:03 and Sarah Weed rounded out the top five in 44th place (18:30).

After a grouped first 3/4 of a mile, Shelton took the lead for most of the race. She was eventually run down by Katelynn Hart and Lindsey Payne of Glenbard West, as they finished first and second.

“I really never planned to get the lead like that, it just happened,” Shelton said. “I’m very happy with the way I ran tonight and how our team performed. I will learn from this going forward. It was nice to have the lead, but you want to have the lead at the end.”

Callahan, who has been running strong all season, was excited with her finish as well as the team.

“All the people lining the course really helped,” Callahan said. “It a little different running at night. I saw Emily in front and then the two Glenbard runners go and I knew I just had to keep moving.”

Tutt, who recently committed to Northern Illinois University, is still coming back from a mid-season sickness.

“I felt a lot better tonight than I have the last few weeks,” Tutt said.

“I’m still getting back, but we still have time before we really get going, but tonight was fun.”

On the boys side, Neuqua cemented its No. 1 ranking with a score of 24 points over Downers North (55). Minooka was fourth (126) and Plainfield North finished seventh (181).

Continued from page 19 “I even shocked myself,” Bolden said. “I’d hit a ball a ball up there and be conservative and then go after every putt, and things just worked out.

My approach shots were usually 10 feet and in, and that’s the distance where I make most everything. But if it was just an ok shot, it was about 20 feet away, and I did make a few 20-footers, too.

“I feel like we’re one of the most hard-working teams out here, so we’ll be ready to go at the sectional. We’ll be so prepared, and I feel like our chances to get to state are really high. We’ve prepared so much for this, so I definitely want to go back to state. But I don’t want just me to get there; I want everyone down there as a team.”

Knights junior Taylor Miron tied for fourth with an 81, while senior Hannah Mastandrea fired an 88 for their team’s final score. Freshman Carly Schiene shot a 90, while freshman Maddie Pyle was their other competitor.

“I’m really excited,” Curran said.

“This really gives us a boost of confidence going into sectionals, and we really think that we can do something great. It’s all about team, team, team.

Shannon likes what he’s seen thus far and expects another good effort in the sectional, which hopefully results in a state trip.

“I’m very proud of them,” Shannon said. “They work hard and do everything that we ask of them. And they not only work hard in the season, they’ve worked hard in the offseason.

We had two people who basically shot their career-lows today with Bri’s 66 and Hannah’s 88.

“We just hope to build off of this and go into the toughest sectional that there is. If we can post the same

score next week, I’ll be very happy.

Next week will basically come down to worrying about how we’re playing the course. Hopefully, we can make good things happen.”

Providence advanced to the sectional for the fifth-straight year after taking second with a 337 total, which was six strokes better than Lincoln-Way East. The Griffins, who had a streak of 10-straight sectional trips halted last year, shot a 343 to claim the final qualifying spot, three strokes ahead of Lockport.

Gromala hopes to qualify for state for a fourth-straight year. She was joined by Ellie Bilotta (83), Isabella Corso (88) and Kayla Ambrose (93) in the scoring while Claire McGrath and Holly Sabastion also participated for

Knudsen, who just committed on Tuesday to attend Northern Arizona University, was excited with the win but also learned from the race.

“I learned to be patient,” Knudsen said. “Let things work through the race, have a plan, don’t panic. Making the commitment on attending college next year really takes a lot off my mind. I don’t have to think about that anymore, which is good.”

Jordan Freese (20th), Mark Dames (32nd), Matthew Mason (35th) and Jack Sullivan rounded out Minooka’s top five.

“I feel good about both teams tonight,” coach Kevin Gummerson said.

“It’s a step in the process to be there at the end of the season. We have much more in the tank with the girls and the boys team is finally believing that they can be good.”

Plainfield North was led by Omar Paramo, who ran 15:32 for 24th place.

Ben Otstott was 34th and Walker Wells finished 39th, with Gabe Nkpe (42nd) and James Suchy (47) rounding out the top five. the Celtics.

“Everyone had the goal [qualifying for sectionals] of doing it,” Gromala said. “We had a rough start this year, but everyone’s really practiced hard and we’ve come together and have played well to finish things off.

I thought that everyone played their best today.

“I started off very strong this season and have been keeping it very consistent, and there’s still an opportunity to fix some things. With my new coach, I’ve been working on getting consistent. I didn’t feel like I played my best here, but it still turned out to be not that bad.”

The Griffins were led by Claire Moutvic (82), Laura Lewis (86), Hannah Hill (87) and Carolyn Waleski (88) while Riley Lang (92) and Kerigan McAllister also competed.

Lockport had four individual qualifiers. Moving on were Erica Long (82), Rachel Kuzel (84), McKenzie Ebel (90) and Sydney Loeffler (90). However, Katelyn Kendziora (90) missed advancing following a four-way playoff.

Lincoln-Way West (359), which took fifth, had three qualifiers. Hannah Slater (81) tied for fourth, while Sarah Scheer (86) and Sydney Valiska (90) also advanced.

Also qualifying for the sectional were Plainfield South’s Mandi Granato (86) and Sarah Chan (89) and Joliet’s Alyssa Hornbuckle (89).

The hero that day was JoJo McNair, who caught eight passes for 142 yards and three touchdowns, rushed six times for 91 yards and a score and played his usual quality game at cornerback.

McNair has caught 30 passes for the Steelmen (1-5), putting him in the top five in the area in number of receptions, and has continued to stand out as cornerback who covers receivers and tackles.

Central coach Brett Boyter said he feels McNair is as good an athlete as there is in the area, and he is not alone in that assessment.

On the other side of the ball in the game at Joliet Central was Plainfield

Central junior middle linebacker Tom Gustafson. That marked the second time I had seen Gustafson this season, and both times, he looked like he was born to play the position. Toiling for a team that also is seeking its first victory in years, he clogged hole after hole in the middle of the line, and when he hit someone, the play ended right there. Wildcats coach Jon Pereiro also has used Gustafson occasionally at fullback, especially in short-yardage and goal-line situations.

Last week produced a stunning result as Romeoville edged Minooka, 29-26, for its first victory. Senior running back Jordan Nettles, who is tied for third in the area in rushing and is committed to Northern Illinois, scored his fourth touchdown on a spectacular 16-yard run in the closing seconds to give the Spartans the victory.

1. Lincoln-Way East (5-1): With a playoff berth in hand, the Griffins will go about the business of securing the best Class 8A playoff seeding possible. Jake Arthur is completing an amazing 73 percent of his passes.

2. Lemont (6-0): The Indians, whose defense continues to shine, take on T.F. South on Friday night with first place and most likely the South Suburban Blue championship on the line. Spencer Nagel has thrown nine touchdown passes to his brother, Austin, and 13 in all.

3. Plainfield North (4-2): The Tigers jump back up to third, which is their high-water mark of the season in the Herald-News rankings. They have a shot at a 7-2 regular season.

4. Lincoln-Way West (4-2): The Warriors have lost to Homewood-Flossmoor and Normal Community the last two weeks and face another tough assignment Friday night at Lockport.

5. Lockport (4-2): The Porters will host Lincoln-Way West on Friday night in what figures to be one of the area’s most competitive games.

Quarterback Ben Davis is having a strong season, but the Warriors’ defense is no pushover.

6. Bolingbrook (3-3): Determining the position to rank many of the top teams in the area has been a challenge, and nobody more so than the Raiders. They kept their playoff hopes burning last week with a big win at Lockport.

7. Morris (4-2): The Redskins, who rallied in the second half but came up a touchdown short at DeKalb, hit the road again to visit Kaneland.

8. Lincoln-Way Central (4-2): The Knights fell to unbeaten Bradley last week and face another tough opponent Friday as they visit Bolingbrook.

It is only natural.

The area football teams that win more often than not, and thus are on a path to the playoffs, garner the most publicity.

A corollary to that is the top players on those teams often grab headlines.

Football is a team game, of course.

However, there always are a few players who stand out on teams that are having difficulty winning. We eventually say something like, “Too bad he is not on a winning team, where more people would get an opportunity to appreciate how good a player he is.”

There are numerous players in our area who would fit into that category.

Kudos to all of them. Here, I will mention a few here who have stood out in my mind during the first two-thirds of the season.

Minooka, Joliet Catholic Academy both qualify for girls golf sectionals STAFF, SUBMITTED REPORTS

ROCK ISLAND – Maddie Erickson shot an 80 Wednesday at Highland Springs to lead the Minooka girls golf team to second place in the Rock Island Sectional and a berth in Tuesday’s Class AA Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin Sectional at Illini Country Club.

Galesburg won the regional with a 317 total. Minooka finished at 346, and Dunlap claimed the final qualifying spot with a 378.

Following Erickson for Minooka were Hailey Arlis with an 86 and Miranda Sharp at 87. Junior Richel Kikolis posted the final counting score, a 93. McKayla Holmes was next for the Indians at 101.

GIRLS GOLF Class A Grant Park Regional: Joliet

Catholic shot 456 at Minne Monesse and captured the third qualifying position, behind Beecher’s 423 and Iroquois West’s 425, for the sectional Tuesday at Pontiac Elks. Jennifer Filotto led the Angels with a 95. Alex-

Continued from page 21 Nettles finished with 225 rushing yards in 28 carries. Even when Romeoville has been blown out, coach Oliver Gibson has noted how Nettles always gives everything he has and continues to produce good numbers.

Put him on a team having more success, and he would be attracting more attention among area fans.

Another of the unsung is Joliet Catholic outside linebacker Clay Briscoe. He sat out last season as a transfer and is making the most of his only season with the Hilltoppers despite their 0-6 record. He is mobile, plays hard every down and makes big plays.

Again, there are many more of that type who labor in relative obscurity because their teams are struggling in the win-loss column. These merely are four who have caught my attention during the first six weeks of the season. They epitomize the good in high school football, the way they go about doing the best job they can regardless of the score.

Class AA Plainfield North Regional:

Waubonsie Valley won at Nettle Creek with a 353 score, and Oswego East (371) and Neuqua Valley (376) also qualified for Tuesday’s Lockport Sectional at Broken Arrow. Plainfield North was fourth at 391, Plainfield East tied for sixth at 400 and Bolingbrook was 10th at 467. Plainfield North juniors MacKenzie Wolendowski and Abby Daniels qualified with respective scores of 87 and 98.

Class AA Hinsdale Central Regional: At Oak Brook Hills Resort in Hinsdale, umn where we detailed the teams in the area that are alive in the playoff hunt, and which class they could fall into, let’s peek into the crystal ball and take our best guess on which teams actually will make the playoffs.

I will be surprised if any of these 12 do not qualify – Lincoln-Way East, Lockport, Joliet West, Plainfield South, Lincoln-Way Central, Plainfield North, Lincoln-Way West, Lemont, Morris, Wilmington, Seneca and Dwight.

You may notice Bolingbrook, Providence and Coal City are not on the list. Any or all of them could get in, but considering all three are 3-3 and have tough opponents to beat in order to finish 5-4, I will leave them in the “maybe” category for now.

• My apologies to Lincoln-Way West. In Wednesday’s column, I inadvertently skipped over the Warriors while developing the list of area teams bidding for the playoffs. At 4-2, they are one win from qualifying.

The way the classes broke down after Week 6, they would be a small Class 7A team if the playoffs were beginning now.

Taylor Landfair chipped in six kills and two digs, Katie Shook three aces and 13 digs and Megan Brock four kills, two blocks and an ace.

2. Coal City (3-3): The Coalers have dropped three straight, albeit against three better-than-average opponents.

They look to get back on track Friday night at Sandwich.

3. Seneca (4-2): Based on the Irish rallying late last week to overcome ReedCuster, the Irish replace the Comets in the rankings.

Encarnacion’s 11th inning HR lifts Jays over O’s, into ALDS

The Associated Press TORONTO – Edwin Encarnacion advanced Toronto to the AL Division Series in the Blue Jays’ familiar manner – with a big home run.

Encarnacion hit a three-run shot in the 11th inning off Ubaldo Jimenez, and Toronto beat the Baltimore Orioles, 5-2, in Tuesday night’s AL wild card game to advance to a Division Series matchup against old foe Texas.

“It was a very special moment and a very special opportunity,” Encarnacion said through a translator.

Jose Bautista also homered for the Blue Jays , who open the Division Series on Tuesday at Texas. Encarnacion’s homer brought back memories of the tiebreaking, three-run shot that Bautista hit in the seventh inning of Game 5 of last year’s AL Division Series win over the Rangers, a shot punctuated by a memorable bat flip.

And the Blue Jays won their last World Series title in 1993 on Joe Carter’s walkoff home run .

“I was looking for a fastball, and I was trying to put the barrel on it, get a little bit in front because the infield was playing in, and I actually got it,” Encarnacion said through a translator.

Jimenez relieved Brian Duensing with one out in the 11th, and Devon Travis singled in a 1-1 pitch. Reigning AL MVP Josh Donaldson singled on the next pitch, and Travis went all the way to third as left fielder Nolan Reimold bobbled the ball.

Encarnacion sent the following pitch, a 91 mph offering, soaring into the second deck in left. Encarnacion immediately knew it was gone and raised both arms in triumph, index fingers pointed skyward.

The crowd of 49,934 chanted “Eddie, Eddie!” as Encarnacion circled the bases before being greeted by a mob of teammates. Encarnacion matched his career-best with 42 home runs in the regular season.

Jimenez said he was trying to throw a low slider and induce a double play.

“It didn’t do anything,” Jimenez said. “It stayed up.”

Orioles closer Zach Britton, who was perfect in 47 save chances during the regular season, never got in the game.

“Nobody has been pitching better for us than Ubaldo,” Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said. “It didn’t work out.”

Britton warmed up three times but didn’t leave the bullpen.

CHICAGO – While the Cubs were waiting to find out if they would play the New York Mets or San Francisco Giants in the National League Division Series, Addison Russell thought about the experience he gained in last year’s playoffs.

It was invaluable, even if an injury cut it short.

“It’s pretty important,” Russell said Wednesday. “I kind of got to see the atmosphere a little bit, especially in that wild-card game and the first games against the Cardinals as well. I got that experience in my back pocket. Hopefully, this first series against whoever it may be, is positive, and amped up as well.”

The Cubs created a buzz in the North Side of Chicago by rolling to a major league-leading 103 wins. Long-suffering fans are hoping for their first title since 1908, and the atmosphere at Wrigley Field figures to be charged when the Division Series opens Friday night.

Victories are tougher to come by in October than in May or June, however. The Cubs’ track record and talent only count for so much in a five- or seven-game series.

“It has to do with good fortune,” general manager Jed Hoyer said. “That doesn’t mean the team that gets there is lucky. You’re going to have to have

some breaks along the way.”

The Cubs won more games than they had since 1910, with one of the deepest lineups and pitching staffs in the game.

They boast two NL MVP candidates in Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo and a pair of Cy Young Award contenders in Jon Lester and Kyle Hendricks to go with last year’s winner in Jake Arrieta.

They also have a 22-year-old in Russell who emerged as one of the best allaround shortstops in baseball. The NL All-Star is a strong candidate for the Gold Glove and a key contributor at the plate. And he comes into these playoffs looking to stick around until the end after showing some flashes in a run last year that ended with an injury.

Russell broke up a no-hit bid by St. Louis’ John Lackey with a single in the sixth inning of the opener of the NL Division Series. But he pulled his left hamstring sliding into third with a triple in Game 3 against the Cardinals and did not play again.

The Cubs were then swept by the Mets in the NLCS, but they came back better this year, and so did Russell. He hit 21 homers and drove in 95 runs – second among major league shortstops – to go with some spectacular play in the field.

“I’m a little bit more familiar with these guys,” Russell said. “I’ve been playing on this surface for a little bit longer so that makes everything a little bit more comfortable for me.”

24 White’s latest injury a major setback

for the 2nd-year WR, Bears’ rebuild Team must hope he can persevere after what could be two lost seasons to begin career

LAKE FOREST – When it comes to Bears second-year wide receiver Kevin White, it seems were it not for bad luck, he and his team would have no luck at all.

With a hair under 5:00 remaining in the third quarter of last Kevin White Sunday’s 17-14 Bears’ victory over the Detroit Lions, Brian Hoyer hit White with a quick five-yard toss to the Detroit seven-yard line, and White went down in a heap under Lions safety Glover Quin with his left leg twisted dangerously underneath him.

It was clear after White made his way to the bench, where he was met by the Bears medical people, he was demonstrably upset and perhaps even angry.

You had to guess the news wouldn’t be great, but few were prepared for the bombshell the Bears dropped Wednesday morning.

White suffered a high ankle sprain on his left leg that resulted in a spiral fracture of the fibula, and he has been placed on the injured reserve list.

The Bears are not ruling out his return later this season, but the earliest he’d be eligible to return would be Nov. 20 against the Giants, and it sounds extremely unlikely this injury could heal that quickly.

As of Wednesday, the Bears and White still were mulling whether surgery or allowing the injury to heal on its own is the best course of action, and there is a real possibility White is done for the year.

The answers to the first two questions on everybody’s minds are: Yes, the left leg he injured Sunday is the same leg in which a stress fracture in the tibia caused him to miss his entire rookie campaign; and no, there is absolutely no connection between the two injuries.

According to coach John Fox, “This injury is not nearly as serious as the last one.

“This is a completely different injury. It’s a completely different bone in the lower leg. This was the fibula; it’s the non-weight bearing bone. But he does have a spiral fracture.”

This is not an insufferable loss for the Bears right now, as Alshon Jeffery is dressing and making his

It is, however, a significant setback for the Bears’ rebuilding program with Ryan Pace’s and Fox’s very first choice, the seventh overall player in the draft targeted to be a centerpiece of the new offense, now missing almost all of his first two seasons.

It is doubly disappointing with the way White was starting to come on after a noticeably slow start in training camp.

Fox thought White was playing his best football when the injury occurred.

“I think last week was by far his best game,” Fox said. “He’s improved every week. I think we have mentioned that along the way. It’s disappointing for him and for us, but mostly for him. Just from the standpoint of having watched him grow and having experienced some success last week against Detroit.”

While White’s numbers weren’t eye-popping, he has played a significant role in the Bears’ back-to-back 300-yard passing games, and that threat clearly forced the Lions to respect the passing attack and leave some open lanes for rookie Jordan Howard’s big rushing day in his first start.

As opponents now consider putting an eighth and perhaps even ninth man in the box to limit Howard, the absence of White could encourage that decision and crimp the development of a second very promising youngster.

Finally, there is White, seemingly a very solid young man who deserves better.

They say what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, and for the moment and the immediate future, it appears that is about all White and the Bears can hope for.

‘ONE FOLD AND ONE SHEPHERD’ Imitation sheep at Joliet church are building real community

JOLIET – You’ve heard of church mice? Well, meet the church sheep.

These lifelike sheep are strategically posed on the grounds of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 2500 Arbeiter Road in Joliet. But despite the planning in their arrangements, the church didn’t intend to acquire so many.

“When people come into church, the first thing they want to know, ‘What are the sheep up to?’ ” St. Xavier’s pastor, the Rev. Karl Langsdorf said.

Really all Langsdorf wanted was an outdoor Nativity scene, he said.

But after he bought one around Christmas time last year, a parishioner said to him, “But, Father! It has no sheep.”

“So then I said to the people, ‘Let’s see if we can get some sheep,’ ” Langsdorf said. “So parishioners got volunteers to buy sheep and then someone else bought sheep and then someone bought a few more sheep.”

After the holidays, when Langsdorf was packing up the Nativity scene, he thought to himself, “Well, we’re on 15 acres and it’s open. Instead of putting the sheep away, let’s just move them around the grounds.”

Langsdorf said this whim became a “Where has Father put the sheep?” game with the children of St. Francis Xavier. In April, the church held a dinner dance and raffled off “Shepherd of the Month.”

This passed the responsibility of moving the sheep from Langsdorf to the church’s families, one family per month.

“The first family that took up the task was very creative,” Langsdorf said. “Suddenly the sheep were doing all kinds of goofy things – climbing trees and playing football. One family brought in their canoe and they have sheep sitting in that. The week before that [the sheep] were picking apples on trees that aren’t apple trees, but a created scene.”

Positioning the sheep has strengthened the communal sense in the 560-family parish. It’s also been good for the sheep, who certainly aren’t lonely. Langsdorf surmises the church has 16 sheep, but he isn’t certain.

“During the summer, someone went out and bought more sheep,”

Langsdorf said.

Updates on the sheep’s doings are posted on St. Francis Xavier’s Facebook page. Langsdorf has no idea if St. Francis Xavier, a missionary to Asia, would approve of the sheep’s role, but he feels anything that builds community would be fine with the saint.

Building community is a prime focus for the Joliet church, especially when it comes together to feed the hungry. Members routinely donate nonperishable food to Bags of Hope, which helps feed low-income children in Lockport, Langsdorf said.

During Lent, the church collects donations from its members to help low-income people in Kendall County, Langsdorf said. St. Francis Xavier parishioners also volunteer at Daybreak Center in Joliet, he added.

“All those little things are connected. They are things that build community,” Langsdorf said. “We’re not just closed into ourselves. We’re trying to look out into our world and reach out to others in the wider community.”

FAITH BRIEFS Braidwood church set to host fundraiser on Saturday

BRAIDWOOD – Immaculate Conception Church in Braidwood will host its third annual “Nite at the Races” event on Saturday, at the Gardner American Legion Hall, 426 Industry Ave. in Gardner.

Doors will open at 6 p.m., and the first race will be at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 each and may be purchased at the door.

Proceeds from the race nite will help with renovations to the Parish Hall. Everyone 21 years old and older is invited to attend.

The theme this year is “Halloween,” and attendees wearing a costume will receive an extra $10 in “funny money.”

Joliet Catholic Academy commissions new school seal to celebrate heritage The Herald News JOLIET – When Joliet Catholic Academy students, faculty and staff returned to campus for the 2016-17 school year, they were greeted by the completion of Heritage Quad.

The quad includes walls paying tribute to the three schools that became Joliet Catholic Academy: De La Salle High School, Joliet Catholic High School and St. Francis Academy. It provides a new gathering place for students and alumni. It also brings back the Victory Light, which has survived as a symbol for the school and is now back on campus in physical form.

Spurred on by encouragement from JCA’s founding orders, the Carmelites and Franciscans, the JCA administration sought to celebrate its 147-year tradition of Catholic education in the Joliet and Will County area by re-creating a school seal that included elements of past school seals from Joliet Catholic High School and St. Francis Academy.

A committee group consisting of JCA faculty, staff, current students, alumni, Carmelites and Franciscans met throughout the 2015-16 school year to decide on what elements of JCA’s history should be included in a

traditional seal.

The traditional coat of arms of the Franciscan Order sits to the right of the Victory Light on the seal, joined on the opposite side by the Carmelite Shield. The Carmelite Shield “consists of a white mountain, representing Mount Carmel in Haifa Israel, the Carmelite Order’s place of origin.”

The stars represent the Marian and Elian traditions of the order. The star on the mountain represents the Virgin Mary to whom the order is

dedicated. The two stars in the upper portion of the shield are the prophets Elijah and Elisha. These two men from the Book of Kings in the Old Testament are considered the spiritual inspirations of the order today.

At the center of the seal stands the JCA Victory Light, which epitomizes Joliet Catholic Academy. It was built in imitation of the original St. Patrick’s Church, because Catholic High on Broadway St., where the original Victory Light still resides, stands on the site of what once was St. Patrick’s.

The tower was originally lit in 1927 to inform Joliet residents of the Hillmen’s victory at the National Catholic Basketball Championship. Now, the Victory Light burns after any major victory, athletic or academic.

Today, the JCA official school seal (which bears the year 1869 on its base, commemorating the founding of Catholic education in Joliet by the Franciscan sisters at St. Francis Academy) is a powerful symbol to the community of tradition, spirit, loyalty, knowledge and truth.

Alzheimer’s symptoms vary widely Note to readers: This column originally ran in October 2014.

Dear Dr. K: My mother has Alzheimer’s

disease. What should I expect in the coming years?

Dear Reader: It’s impossible to predict exactly how Alzheimer’s disease will affect someone. Symptoms of the disease, and how quickly they progress, can vary widely from person to person. In some people, for reasons we don’t understand, the disease progresses very slowly.

However rapidly Alzheimer’s disease progresses, it generally unfolds in five stages: • Stage 1. Memory problems begin. The person may misplace valuable objects. Their performance at work or in social situations begins to suffer. They may have more trouble expressing their thoughts.

Personality changes also begin. A person may become withdrawn, apathetic, moody, depressed, irritable or anxious.

• Stage 2. Memory problems are more obvious. It may be difficult for someone with Alzheimer’s to follow conversations. The person may have difficulty recalling current events or even information from their own life. Depression often becomes prominent.

Reasoning and judgment skills are impaired.

• Stage 3. Memory can fluctuate daily or even hourly. People sometimes forget major events in their lives. Often they are unaware of the date or the time of year. Their conversations may become disjointed and veer off track.

You may see episodes of paranoia or anger. Stressful situations can trigger shouting, cursing or hitting.

At this stage, people with Alzheimer’s still can manage many basic activities of daily living. But they no longer can live independently.

• Stage 4. In this stage, you’ll see dramatic changes. Language skills drop sharply.

People become less withdrawn, but they often develop behavior and emotional problems, including delusions and hallucinations. Sleep disturbances and wandering also are common.

By this stage, the person likely will require help to bathe, toilet, dress and eat.

• Stage 5. This stage has been called “the long goodbye.” There seems to be very little left of the person’s “self.” Motor skills decline until the person no longer can walk, sit up, chew and swallow food, or control bladder and bowel movements. As the brain shuts down, the person becomes unresponsive, lapses into a coma and finally dies.

I am sorry to paint such a bleak picture, but unfortunately today we have no way of preventing or treating this terrible disease. However, there is reason to hope the picture will become brighter in the future.

In the past 20 years, scientists have begun to unravel what goes wrong with the chemistry of the brain in Alzheimer’s. I am cautiously optimistic this knowledge will lead to true breakthroughs.

But like the pace of the disease itself, the pace of our growing knowledge is hard to predict. It may take decades, but I think medical research will make major advances.

I know that gives little comfort to people who must deal with this terrible illness today.

boyfriend and I have been dating for almost two years, although we have known each other for almost seven years. He is sweet, compassionate, always puts me first and is the best friend and romantic partner I ever could wish for.

My question is, is two years too soon to know I want to spend my life with him? Even better for a bridge player is to solve the problems that are presented, not to create them. In today’s deal, South is in six spades. What should he do after West leads a low heart?

North’s two-no-trump response was the Jacoby Forcing Raise, guaranteeing at least four-card support and game-going values. South’s threeno-trump rebid indicated a middling hand (usually 14-16 points) with no side-suit singleton or void. Four clubs and four diamonds were control-bids showing those aces.

The North-South hands have mirror distribution: Each is 5-2-4-2.

This is usually bad news because it means there will be no discards or extra trump tricks from ruffing. So, at first glance, declarer needs either the heart or club finesse to work. Is there another possibility?

The obvious approach is to try each round-suit finesse. However, not many defenders would lead away from the heart king. It is true that North showed interest in a grand slam, so an aggressive opening lead is feasible. But against most players, South should win with dummy’s heart ace, draw trumps, cash the diamond winners, and cast adrift with a heart.

If East takes the trick, he must either lead into dummy’s club acequeen or concede a ruff-and-sluff.

At the worst, West wins and shifts to a club. Now declarer has to finesse.

If that loses, he should congratulate West on a great opening lead.
