Louis Jolliet and Jacques Marquette – Joliet and Chicago In 1673, French-Canadian explorer Louis Jolliet and Father Jacques Marquette first crossed this wetland area on their return trip from the exploration of the Mississippi Valley.

Both were the first to recognize the importance of the portage near Chicago as a potential water link between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River.

This area stretches nearly six miles and was recognized by Jolliet for its strategic value, namely, providing a critical link between the Chicago and Des Plaines Rivers.

Jolliet suggested to his patrons at Quebec that by cutting a canal through the “river portage,” New France could control the water route through the interior of the continent.

Shortly after early settlement, the south branch of the Chicago River was known as the River of the Portage, as it became the key link between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River.

This branch of the river flowed southwest from a swampy location called Mud Lake by early adventurers.

From Mud Lake west, a small channel, known for years as the West Fork, meandered a short distant before ending.

It was along these tributaries that the notion of a canal that connected the Des Plaines River to the Chicago River were first contemplated.

The canal was finally realized in the 19th century, when construction began on the Illinois and Michigan Canal in 1836.

Father Jacques Marquette, a Jesuit missionary, traveled with Louis Jolliet on this expedition to explore the Mississippi Valley.

Marquette returned to the region in 1674-75 on missionary work and remained during the winter because he was ill.

OLD POSTCARD IMAGES SOUGHT FOR PUBLICATION David Belden is a history teacher at Minooka Community High School and currently is publishing local postcard books with Arcadia Publishing in his Local History classes. He and his students are looking for old Joliet photos and postcards, and images from Joliet’s parks, for a new publication.

According to his diaries, Marquette stayed along the south branch of the Chicago River, near the eastern end of the Chicago Portage, and reflected on the importance of the river and Lake Michigan on the areas’ landscape.

Efforts have been made to memorialize the site, including a mahogany cross that was erected on Sept. 28, 1907, by the City of Chicago, the Chicago Association of Commerce, and Miss Valentine Smith, the city archivist.

In 1930, the city of Chicago also memorialized Marquette on a bronze tablet that is located on the northern bridge tower of the Damen Avenue (Robey Bridge).

The monument is eroding as it sits on a busy stretch of Damen Avenue.

That stretch of Damen Avenue sees less pedestrian traffic crossing than it used to, on the South Branch of the Chicago River.

Several statues of Marquette and Jolliet have been erected around the region over the years.

Jolliet that stood in a plaza near the Palace of Manufactures at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago.

A bronze statue of Louis Jolliet, sculpted by Sigvald Asbjornsen in 1903, sits outside the Joliet Public Library in downtown Joliet.

Asbjornsen, who emigrated to the United States in 1892, sculpted a number of public works around Chicago, including a statue of Benjamin Franklin in Lincoln Park. Asbjorsen’s statue of Louis Joillet was dedicated on February 14, 1904.

A monument to Father Marquette was erected on Oct. 14, 1951, under the Archbishop Joseph H. Schlarman, the Bishop of Peoria.

Located on the northeast corner, property of St. Mary’s Church in Utica, Illinois, the stone sculpture captures a profile of the Jesuit missionary and inscription at the base.

In April 1675, Father Marquette offered the first parochial Mass near this location in the presence of thousands of Native Americans.

Zombie Army Productions debuts new ‘HellsGate Haunted House’ on Thursday

mmallory@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – When he was a child, John Laflamboy enjoyed getting scared at haunted houses.

As an adult, he enjoys scaring others.

Last week, Laflamboy’s company, Zombie Army Productions, opened Statesville Haunted Prison in Crest Hill for the 17th year. On Thursday, it will resurrect HellsGate Haunted House in Lockport – described by Laflamboy as a “passion project” for the whole company.

The new attraction’s concept is based on the legend of HellsGate from the 1970s and ’80s. Laflamboy said that as he and others he grew up, they heard stories about a multilevel haunted mansion in the woods somewhere in Lockport. It had a giant slide, and if you were lucky enough to escape, you could win back your money.

“From everything I’ve read, it was a real place,” Laflamboy said.

“Before haunted houses were haunted houses and they were just using abandoned homes. Back when it was your entire marketing plan.”

After 10 years of trying to make HellsGate a reality, the Zombie Army group built a 21,000-squarefoot home in the woods of Lockport during the past year.

HellsGate will be completely different from Statesville, the 14-time “Best Haunted House in Chicagoland” winner, Laflamboy said. Although Statesville is an “in-yourface, sensory overload, rock-show of a haunt,” HellsGate is described as an adventure.

Visitors will park at the Lockport Metra Lot at 1300 S. State St. and board a shuttle to the haunted mansion. Then they’ll walk through the forest just to get to the front gate.

The house itself has secret passages and an infamous giant slide. If you find the key to get out, your $25 ticket is reimbursed.

“We’re nailing all the old legends of HellsGate,” Laflamboy said. “The only one we don’t want is that it was said HellsGate closed down because actors went missing.”

hyper-competitive world of haunted houses is difficult: Laflamboy said customers will “run you out of town if you disappoint.”

In the off-season, staff travels and explorers spoke of scary sites, landmarks and stories. In January, they begin building toward a new show that they say is at least 30 percent different from the year before.

“We study the science of fear constantly,” Laflamboy said. “People come back because we push the limits and innovate each year.”

Continued from page 3 His “Snake Wall” feature within Statesville’s City of the Dead is brand new. He’ll have his own python, “Mr. Cuddles,” and other live animals on set.

He said Statesville continues to add more live animals, which make for a more authentic feel than artificial props on a set. He said he can’t wait to see visitor reactions.

Emily Sinchak joined the Zombie Army in 2009 and said she will work mainly at the “elegantly terrifying” HellsGate this year.

She actually joined the crew after her friend busted her knee and had to get checked out by an EMT backstage.

“I asked how they do everything and was blown away,” Sinchak said.

She began volunteering immediately.

Seven years later, she said the thing she loves most about the Zombie Army are the people she works with.

Plus, she gets to be creative.

Now she’s a manager in charge of making sure actors are attached to fly beams, harnesses and in their correct spots.

“It’s the most fun, creative job ever,” Sinchak said.

Brian O’Donnell, also known as “Chunks” to the group, is a 13-year member of the Zombie Army. He remembers applying his own makeup in a tent and no bathrooms. If it rained, they got wet. If it was hot, they sweated. If it was cold, they shivered.

“But it did make us all grow stronger together,” O’Donnell said.

Kenneth McGregor is in his fifth year with the Zombie Army. He started off as an actor for three straight seasons.

He spent extra time on the set the past couple years to prove himself.

This year, Laflamboy asked him what he wanted to do, and he was elevated to technical assistant.

To the Electors of the State of Illinois: The Illinois Constitution establishes a structure for government and laws. There are three ways to initiate change to the Illinois Constitution: (1) a constitutional convention may propose changes to any part; (2) the General Assembly may propose changes to any part; or (3) a petition initiative may propose amendments limited to structural and procedural subjects contained in the Legislative Article. The people of Illinois must approve any changes to the Constitution before they become effective. The purpose of this document is to inform you of proposed changes to the Illinois Constitution and provide you with a brief explanation and a summary of the arguments in favor of and in opposition to the proposed amendment.

Proposed changes in the existing constitutional amendment are indicated by underscoring all new matter and by crossing with a line all matter which is to be deleted.

PROPOSED AMENDMENT TO ADD SECTION 11 TO ARTICLE IX OF THE ILLINOIS CONSTITUTION ARTICLE IX – REVENUE SECTION 11. TRANSPORTATION FUNDS (a) No moneys, including bond proceeds, derived from taxes, fees, excises, or license taxes relating to registration, title, or operation or use of vehicles, or related to the use of highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, airports, or to fuels used for propelling vehicles, or derived from taxes, fees, excises, or license taxes relating to any other transportation infrastructure or transportation operation, shall be expended for purposes other than as provided in subsections (b) and (c). (b) Transportation funds may be expended for the following: the costs of administering laws related to vehicles and transportation, including statutory refunds and adjustments provided in those laws; payment of highway obligations; costs for construction, reconstruction, maintenance, repair, and betterment of highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, airports, or other forms of transportation; and other statutory highway purposes. Transportation funds may also be expended for the State or local share of highway funds to match federal aid highway funds, and expenses of grade separation of highways and railroad crossings, including protection of at-grade highways and railroad crossings, and, with respect to local governments, other transportation purposes as authorized by law. (c) The costs of administering laws related to vehicles and transportation shall be limited to direct program expenses related to the following: the enforcement of traffic, railroad, and motor carrier laws; the safety of highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, or airports; and the construction, reconstruction, improvement, repair, maintenance, operation, and administration of highways, under any related provisions of law or any purpose related or incident to, including grade separation of highways and railroad crossings. The limitations to the costs of administering laws related to vehicles and transportation under this subsection (c) shall also include direct program expenses related to workers’ compensation claims for death or injury of employees of the State’s transportation agency; the acquisition of land and the erection of buildings for highway purposes, including the acquisition of highway rights-of-way or for investigations to determine the reasonable anticipated future highway needs; and the making of surveys, plans, specifications, and estimates for the construction and maintenance of flight strips and highways. The expenses related to the construction and maintenance of flight strips and highways under this subsection (c) are for the purpose of providing access to military and naval reservations, defense-industries, defense-industry sites, and sources of raw materials, including the replacement of existing highways and highway connections shut off from general use at military and naval reservations, defense-industries, and defense-industry sites, or the purchase of rights-of-way. (d) None of the revenues described in subsection (a) of this Section shall, by transfer, offset, or otherwise, be diverted to any purpose other than those described in subsections (b) and (c) of this Section. (e) If the General Assembly appropriates funds for a mode of transportation not described in this Section, the General Assembly must provide for a dedicated source of funding. (f) Federal funds may be spent for any purposes authorized by federal law.

EXPLANATION The proposed amendment adds a new Section to the Revenue Article of the Illinois Constitution that provides revenue generated from transportation related taxes and fees (referred to as “transportation funds”) shall be used exclusively for transportation related purposes. Transportation related taxes and fees include motor fuel taxes, vehicle registration fees, and other taxes and user fees dedicated to public highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit (buses and rail), ports, or airports.

Under the proposed amendment, transportation funds may be used by the State or local governments only for the following purposes: (1) costs related to administering transportation and vehicle laws, including public safety purposes and the payment of obligations such as bonds; (2) the State or local share necessary to secure federal funds or for local government transportation purposes as authorized by law; (3) the construction, reconstruction, improvement, repair, maintenance, and operation of highways, mass transit, and railroad crossings; (4) expenses related to workers’ compensation claims for death or injury of transportation agency employees; and (5) to purchase land for building highways or buildings for to be used for highway purposes.

This new Section is a limitation on the power of the General Assembly or a unit of local government to use, divert, or transfer transportation funds for a purpose other than transportation. It does not, and is not intended to, impact or change the way in which the State and local governments use sales taxes, including the sales and excise tax on motor fuel, or alter home rule powers granted under this Constitution. It does not seek to change the way in which the State funds programs administered by the Illinois Secretary of State, Illinois Department of Transportation, and operations by the Illinois State Police directly dedicated to the safety of roads, or entities or programs funded by units of local government. Further, the Section does not impact the expenditure of federal funds, which may be spent for any purpose authorized by federal law.

ELWOOD – Halloween still is a month away, but Debbie Bennett is already thinking about Christmas.

More specifically, she’s thinking about the wreaths that will be placed on the graves of the veterans buried in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery as part of a nationwide effort held every year during the holiday season.

Bennett is the location leader for the work that the national nonprofit, Wreaths Across America, has planned for the Abraham Lincoln cemetery. She is seeking sponsors for the wreaths.

“We’re going to honor those who served and remember them always,” she said.

A wreath sponsorship is $15. For each sponsorship, $5 of the amount goes to Operation Care Package – a national nonprofit Bennett began that sends care packages to military members overseas – and to fund more wreaths.

Last year, about 9,400 wreaths were placed on graves at Abraham Lincoln cemetery, according to the 2016 wreath sponsorship form, but there are about 45,000 veterans buried there.

That’s when it was decided, among the family, that June and Chuck’s home was the best place. It’s a one-story with a large enough bathroom to fit Stacy’s wheelchair. Inside it’s bright and open, and from her living area she can see out into the backyard where there’s a pond and a stream, which Stacy loves to hear.

While Stacy and Zach stay in Channahon, family members take turns staying with Avery in their Plainfield home at night and bringing her to mom and dad during the day. That way life is as close to normal for Avery as possible.

June is a nurse, as is her daughter, Stephanie, her sister, Shirley, her niece, Leanne, and Zach’s sister, Sarah.

Along with Stacy’s dad, Randy Hulina, more family members and droves of friends, each day is a gathering of people, food, memories and even laughter.

They keep Stacy company, get her

up and bathed and, on good days, out on the patio, said June. Every day there’s a buffet of food set out, courtesy of everyone and open to those who come by.

“They bring Stacy flowers, gifts for Avery and just sit and talk,” said June.

June is amazed at the outpouring of love from everyone, be it neighbors, friends or family. Renee has brought over amazing food, said June. People mow their grass, run errands and Stacy’s hairdresser comes by every other day to style her hair.

“Since they have Stacy home with them, the street is constantly full of cars coming ...” Renee said. “The gift of love is just overwhelming; the heartwarming stories and sharing of life, love, family and friends is never ending. “ The entire family is grateful for the sense of family and community. They are also in awe of Stacy’s strength. “[It’s] like nothing else. I don’t know where she gets it,” said June. “I think she’s giving us strength before she leaves us. We are in awe of her.”

A man and woman died in the early morning hours Sunday after a crash on Interstate 80.

The incident occurred about 4 a.m. on westbound I-80 near La Grange Road in the Tinley Park area, Illinois State Police District 5 Sgt. Brad Sprague said.

Shantonia T. Giles, 26, of University Park, and Timothy J. Hampton-Cofield, 22, of Chicago, were pronounced dead about an hour later near the scene, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

Giles and Hampton-Cofield were the occupants of a car that was involved in a crash with a semitrailer, Sprague said.

No information was available late Sunday afternoon about the semi driver, he said, and the incident remained under investigation.

The final causes and manners of deaths for Giles and Hampton-Cofield are pending autopsy, toxicological and police reports, according to the Coroner’s Office. Coroner’s exams are scheduled for Monday.

Renee Doughney of Channahon sees a lot of people coming and going from her neighbors’ home, at Chuck and June Anzelc’s. The reason is bittersweet, Renee said, but she wants to share how wonderful people can be to one another.

“I’m telling you, last week I heard bad news every single day,” said Renee.

“The story about [this family] is something that just feels so good to hear about, and for us, to visually see. “ Chuck and June’s niece Stacy (Hulina) Tongate has battled cancer for over seven years. She was first diagnosed with GE Junction cancer – stomach and gastroesophageal cancer – in 2009 and given a survival rate of 18 months.

But Stacy decided to fight. She had her stomach and esophagus removed and underwent chemotherapy. She and fiancé Zach Tongate went ahead with their wedding plans and they had a beautiful daughter name, Avery, now 2.

It wasn’t until after Avery was born that Stacy found out her cancer had spread to more areas and she’s been fighting a courageous battle ever since, said June.

Jerry P’Pool gave, gave and then gave some more

JOLIET – Is your dad supposed to be outside pushing someone’s car?

Angela McCollum read that Facebook message from a friend in disbelief and went to check. Sure enough her father, Jerry P’Pool of Joliet, was moving someone’s stuck car out of the snow.

“I don’t even think he had his oxygen on,” Angela said. “I said, ‘Dad, you physically can’t help someone,’ and he said, ‘Well, they need help.’ He could barely walk when he got into the house because he couldn’t breathe. But he did things like that all the time.”

Indeed. Twenty-two years ago, frustrated with a system that wouldn’t allow them to help the child of a family member, Jerry and his wife, Madonna, became foster parents. Through the years, they helped raise more than 50 children and adopted four of them.

Since Jerry’s death, Angela said some members stopped attending the breakfast. It’s hard without him.

When Jerry died suddenly Jan. 31 at age 67, he was about to make homemade chicken soup for a sick grandchild when he left the house to run an errand. While he was gone, Jerry had a fatal heart attack. He is survived by three sons, four daughters, six grandchildren and a wife of of 47 years. But Jerry had one last gift to give. He was a tissue donor; in this case, corneal tissue.

“There is a man who can now see his grandchildren because of his tissue donation,” Angela said.

“He’d say, ‘We have to help these kids,’ ” Angela said. “He had the patience of a saint.”

At one point, Jerry and Madonna had eight children living with them.

Their adopted children, all adults now, were 4, 5, 7 and 9 when they came to the P’Pool home.

All seven of the P’Pool children graduated from high school and found good jobs, Angela said.

Jerry often met people on Jerry P’Pool the street who weren’t as fortunate. That’s why he always dug into his wallet when he encountered them.

“Dad, they’re going to use it for drugs,” Angela said she would tell him, but Jerry would respond, “Well, they’re going to use it for something.”

Jerry lent money to those in need, never expecting to receive it back. In fact, people who couldn’t pay it back

were those most likely to receive help from Jerry. Angela thinks Jerry still is keeping that tradition from heaven.

“I find pennies every week in the most random places,” Angela said. “I like to think they’re from my dad.”

One might think Jerry had no time for hobbies, but he loved cooking, watching “Jeopardy!” and playing golf, even though Jerry once said, “I hope never to be one of those men who hit a ball around with a stick.”

“He was obsessed with golf. He even watched it on TV,” Angela said. “Every Tuesday was golf day. He would be deathly ill and he’d still go. He always said, ‘I’ll never die on a Tuesday,’ and he didn’t die on a Tuesday.”

States seek to fill digital inheritance law gaps

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – When a loved one dies, laws cover how their houses, cars, and other property are passed on to relatives. But the rules are murkier – and currently far more restrictive – when it comes to pictures on Facebook, emails to friends or relatives and even financial records stored in online cloud accounts.

Google, Facebook and other companies have said a federal privacy law approved decades before digital storage became common prevents them from releasing electronic memories or records unless the account owner grants permission – even if the person is dead.

Without an estate plan, families must try to crack their loved one’s passwords or take the costly step of litigating the matter to access photos and emails – and some have, with little success.

The laws governing how to divide belongings after someone dies have not caught up with the technological advances that have permeated the ways people communicate, but states have begun trying to bridge that gap. This year, Illinois was one of 19 states that passed similar laws to clarify what internet companies can release after someone dies and when information should remain inaccessible.

Police fatally shoot man outside Markham nightclub

MARKHAM – Illinois State Police said they are investigating the fatal shooting of a man by police in southwest suburban Chicago.

State Police Master Sgt. Jason Bradley said the shooting happened early Sunday outside a nightclub in Markham. Bradley said a Markham police officer fatally shot the man.

The federal Electronic Communications Privacy Act, passed in 1986, doesn’t anticipate the release of online information when executing wills. Because probate law is typically left to the states, the laws legislatures are passing could effectively set new rules.

Man accused of causing $13 million in losses at firm

CHICAGO – A federal grand jury in Chicago has indicted a man accused of fraudulently causing $13 million in losses

Facebook lets users choose a “legacy contact” to access their account, and Gmail has an “account trustee” option.

In instances where people use those options, the companies’ agreements with them will supersede the state laws.

Even with the new laws, planning is necessary at a time when many still don’t think about the contents of their internet accounts as property.

“This is one of those many examples where the law really gets its power by giving people the knowledge that it exists,” said Washington state Sen. Jamie Pedersen, the sponsor of the law passed there this year.

The promise of privacy companies offer users has led to heartache and frustration for the families of account holders who have had to go to court for the right to access their relative’s emails and photos.

In 2005, Yahoo turned over more than 10,000 pages of emails in a CD to the family of Lance Cpl. Justin Ellsworth, a Marine from Michigan whose family went to court for the material.

But others have not been successful.

The family of John Ajemain in Massachusetts has been unable to get his emails from Yahoo after his death in 2006. And in 2012, Facebook quashed a subpoena from the family of Sahar Daftary, a model who fell to her death from an apartment building in Manchester, England, in 2008.

Shooting at Chicago train stop leaves 1 dead, 1 wounded

CHICAGO – Chicago police said a shooting outside a Southwest Side train station has left one man dead and another injured.

Police said officers responding to a fight about 7:30 a.m.

Sunday found a 20-year-old man shot in the neck and a 24-year-old man wounded in the buttocks. Police said the 20-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooting occurred outside the California station on the Chicago Transit Authority’s Pink Line. Police said no pedestrians were being allowed in the station and that trains were bypassing it.

Police said they had no one in custody.

Trump tax revelation adds to week of political challenges

NEW YORK – Ever defiant, Donald Trump and his Republican allies embraced a report Sunday that said the New York businessman might not have paid federal income taxes for nearly two decades after he and his companies lost nearly $916 million in a single year.

The unexpected revelation punctuated a week of missteps and aggressive personal attacks from the Republican presidential contender, with early voting already underway in some states and Election Day quickly approaching.

If there was a bright spot to the explosive story about his taxes in The New York Times, Trump supporters said, it was that it may shift the national conversation away from Trump’s weeklong feud with a former beauty queen he called “Miss Piggy” as he shamed her for gaining weight, and his unfounded suggestion Hillary Clinton may have cheated on her husband.

“He’s not been on message,” said Barry Bennett, a former Trump adviser. “A week was wasted where he could have been talking about the heroin epidemic and jobs and ISIS. All the money in the world can’t get that time back.”

The mounting challenges injected a new sense of urgency into Trump’s White House bid with the next presidential debate a week away.

Trump is deciding whether to use the debate stage to attack Clinton’s role in the infidelities of her husband, former President Bill Clinton’s. That’s according to a person with intimate knowledge of Trump’s thinking as his senior advisers huddled Sunday for a rare session of debate preparation. The online taunts referred to footage from a Spanish reality show in 2005 in which Machado was a contestant and appeared on camera in bed with a male contestant. The images are grainy and do not include nudity, although Machado later acknowledged that she was having sex in the video.

Recorder recovered from N.J. crash wasn’t working

HOBOKEN, N.J. – One data recorder recovered so far from the New Jersey Transit commuter train that crashed in Hoboken killing one and injuring more than 100 others was not functioning on the day of the accident, officials said Sunday.

The locomotive’s recorder is supposed to store information on train speed.

National Transportation Safety Board vice chair T. Bella Dinh-Zarr said Sunday afternoon that she’s “hopeful” the data recorder in the cab control car in the front of the train is functional. Investigators haven’t been able to extract that recorder because it’s under a collapsed section of the train station’s roof.

“We still have no firm date on when the controlling car can be accessed so we can” obtain the second recorder, Dinh-Zarr said.

There is a federal requirement that the lead locomotive have a working data recorder, said NTSB investigator Jim Southworth.

“That’s something we’ll see when we get in there,” he said.

Dinh-Zarr also said that the train’s engineer, Thomas Gallagher, told NTSB investigators that he was well-rested before arriving to work that morning and that the train was operating properly before it crashed Thursday morning.

The engineer also said the train was operating at 10 mph as it approached the station. He told investigators he has no memory of the accident; he only remembers waking up on the floor of the cab.

The train’s conductor was also interviewed, and he said he didn’t see anything unusual about the speed of the train, Dinh-Zarr said.

The signals on the tracks leading to Hoboken Terminal appear to be working normally and officials completed a walking inspection of the track, finding nothing that would have affected

the performance of the train, the NTSB said Saturday. Investigators have obtained video from other trains that were inside the train station when the crash occurred.

Signs posted at a New Jersey Transit maintenance facility in Hoboken, dated February, said there had been 10 incidents involving trains in the prior two months, including five derailments.

The sign said the “serious incidents reflect a dangerous trend” and that the main cause of the incidents appeared to be caused by human error.

A spokesman for New Jersey Transit didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

New Jersey Transit trains have been involved in more than 150 accidents that caused more than $4.8 million in damage to tracks or equipment since 2011, and the commuter rail has paid more than $500,000 to settle safety violations, according to federal data.

settled 183 safety violations – ranging from employee drug and alcohol use to violations of railroad operating rules or practices – since Jan. 1, 2011. The settlement payments include about $70,000 for more than a dozen safety violations in 2014 and 2015. Statistics for the current year are not yet available.

Months before Thursday’s deadly commuter train crash in Hoboken, New Jersey, federal rail officials found dozens of violations during an audit focusing on NJ Transit’s safety and operations, a U.S. official confirmed Saturday.

The official, who was familiar with the railroad administration audit, spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the official wasn’t authorized to speak publicly about an ongoing investigation.

The railroad administration began an audit in June after noticing an uptick in rail incidents and found “dozens of safety violations” that needed to be fixed immediately, the official said.

The vice presidential debate Tuesday will be the only time Republican Mike Pence and Democrat Tim Kaine will have the nation’s political attention all to themselves, away from their much more well-known running mates.

The stakes will be lower than the three presidential debates, but will give each largely undefined candidate a chance to make a mark on a national audience. Running mates rarely overshadow the top of the ticket, although Sarah Palin caused a sensation as Republican

John McCain’s pick in 2008. But voters always have a reason to size up the people who would be next in line for the presidency.

ginia governor and current U.S. senator, spent several days preparing for the debate in Raleigh, North Carolina, and in his hometown of Richmond, Virginia.

The debate will take place at Longwood University, about an hour west of Richmond. Helping Kaine is Washington, D.C., lawyer Robert Barnett, a veteran of prepping Democrats for debates. Kaine said he’s been “thinking hard” about what Pence’s record says “about the guy who chose him, because it really is more about Donald Trump than it is about Gov. Pence.”

Pence and Kaine are practiced public speakers with lengthy political careers who should bring a high level of polish to the undercard debate. Pence is a former talk radio host; Kaine a former Harvard-trained trial lawyer.

Bears finish strong, use balanced attack to get first win of season The Bears needed a win in the very worst way to avoid losing the interest of their fan base for the season, to stay relevant in the NFL with 12 games still to play and, most of all, for themselves.

The question now is beyond giving the players and coaches a chance to enjoy their first taste of victory together. How much can we really read into Sunday’s 17-14 victory over of the lowly Detroit Lions?

There was good news and bad news from Kevin White. His second straight solid game in which he grabbed six catches for 55 yards gives him 19 catches on the season, a new record for a Bear in his first four NFL games.

The bad news is White left the game with an injury to his left ankle, the same leg in which he suffered the stress fracture last year that cost him the season, and there was no word on

Beyond that, even with the glass half-full, more analysis requires us to consider the following facts.

That the Bears managed 408 yards of offense, easily a high-water mark for the season, is a definite positive; but it is just 29 yards more than the Lions had given up on average to the 1-3 Colts, 1-3 Titans and 2-1 Packers.

The 114 yards rushing the Bears ground out are certainly satisfying, but we have to realize it just matched

the 114.7 yards rushing a game Detroit allowed Weeks One through Three.

Should we celebrate the Bears’ offense, or should we be lamenting the fact the 17 points they tallied are well below the 28.3 a game the Lions were allowing coming into Soldier Field?

Finally, as enjoyable as Hoyer’s performance might have been, it guarantees a quarterback controversy very much of Fox’s making when he refused to call it a given last week a healthy Cutler would get his job back.

Asked who’s up in Indy next Sunday if Cutler is healthy, Fox replied, “We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. I’d like to enjoy this win at least for a few hours.”

Fans will enjoy it a lot more if the Bears now show them in the coming weeks it’s something they can start to make a habit of with the 1-3 Colts and then 1-3 Jaguars up next.

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com CHICAGO – Last week, John Timu was on the Bears’ practice squad. On third-and-goal in the third quarter from the one-yard line, he was on the field making the play of his young NFL career.

Timu timed the snap perfectly to bring down Zach Zenner for a loss, forcing the Lions to kick a field goal.

“My key was having depth and the timing was perfect and finding the indicator to when he was about to snap the ball,” Timu said following the 17-14 win, the Bears’ first of 2016. “I saw the indicator when he was about to snap it and went from there.”

The undrafted player out of Washington who showed up for the Bears’ run defense late in 2015 joked that the exact thing that tipped him off about the snap was “classified information,” but credited Vic Fangio and Jerrell Freeman for the help.

“That’s Vic, that’s [Freeman] getting us right, guys with experience telling us certain keys and tendencies so we can time blitzes and so we know our coverages,” he said.

The play was one of several key stops for a Bears ‘D’ that kept a high-powered Lions offense out of the end zone on Sunday. Timu, playing inside linebacker in the base package for injured starter Danny Trevathan, described the significance of his play.

“It was awesome. We needed it,” he said. “We came out of halftime saying we needed to make a big play and this series right here is huge for us. It’ll determine what happens for us in the second half. We just told ourselves, let’s get off the field and we’ll go from there.”

Timu has always impressed the Bears’ coaches with his instincts, and his co-starter at linebacker noticed, too.

“I trust him when he lines up,” Freeman said. “I call him Shooter McGavin because he knows what to do and he’s going to shoot it, he’s going to shoot it faster than I will sometimes. He’s one of the smartest guys on the team.”

Cornelius Washington called Timu a “playmaker” who has “been making plays since he’s been here.”

The second-longest tenured Bear on defense, Washington himself made a key play, sacking Matthew Stafford in the fourth quarter, his first QB takedown since 2014.

“It wasn’t a great rush, it just kind of worked out for me,” Washington said with a laugh.

Next to Washington, third-year nose tackle Will Sutton, who is starting for Eddie Goldman, helped a Bears run defense that held Detroit to 66 yards rushing. He had two tackles for no gain.

CHICAGO – Bryce Callahan said he joked with Tracy Porter about vast difference in experience between the Bears’ four young corners and their veteran leader.

In Sunday’s 17-14 win over the Lions, those players came up big for a secondary that flummoxed quarterback Matthew Stafford and Detroit’s high-powered passing game.

“It was fun, these are the guys that I came in with,” said Callahan, who started on the outside. “I was telling Tracy that if you were to add up all our DBs, that would have equaled his experience, so it was kind of funny that we were all out there.”

It’s not even that close. Callahan, Jacoby Glenn, Deiondre’ Hall and Cre’Von LeBlanc have combined to play in 23 NFL games.

Sunday was Porter’s 86th NFL contest.

“I’ve been seeing what I’ve been telling you guys all along,” Porter said. “We have a young group, but their age in this league don’t mean anything to me. They are guys that can play this game. They believe in themselves. I believe in them.

The coaches believe in them. They come in with confidence, and if you have confidence, that’s the biggest key you can have with this position.”

Add in LeBlanc, who played slot corner in his second NFL game, and a youthful group of cover players gained a lot of confidence, holding Stafford to 216 yards, no touchdowns and a passer rating of 56.8, his worst in 15 games. It’s good timing, too, with three good passing offenses coming up on the schedule in Indianapolis, Jacksonville and Green Bay. “I have the utmost confidence in every guy that plays defensive back on our roster,” said Porter, “from starter to the practice squad guys.”

Injury update: Porter said he doesn’t expect his knee to be problematic this week.

“I felt like if I wasn’t 100 percent myself, then there’s no point in me staying in the game and hurting the team,” he said. “I’ve always preached that I’ll do whatever it takes to help the team win, and if it means me stepping to the side and letting the younger guys step in, that’s just what I did.”

WR Kevin White left the game with an ankle injury and did not return. He had six catches on nine targets before exiting. OLB Leonard Floyd had a calf injury and did not play the second half, but coach John Fox said the rookie, as well has Porter, could have gone in if the team needed it.

DE Jonathan Bullard, who battled a toe injury during the week, was active but did not play.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Buffalo took advantage of sloppy, Tom Brady-less New England to hand the Patriots their first home shutout at Gillette Stadium, winning 16-0 Sunday.

It was the first loss of the season for New England (3-1), which was playing its final game before Brady returns from his four-game “Deflategate” suspension.

The Patriots, who moved into Gillette Stadium in 2002, were last blanked at home 6-0 by the New York Jets in 1993 at Foxboro Stadium.

Tyrod Taylor connected with LeSean McCoy for a 7-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, Dan Carpenter added three field goals for Buffalo (2-2).

BRONCOS 27, BUCCANEERS 7: At Tampa,

Fla., Paxton Lynch made his NFL debut sooner than expected, stepping in for injured starter Trevor Siemian to help the Broncos remain unbeaten with a victory over the Buccaneers.

Siemian left the game with two minutes remaining in the first half with what the defending Super Bowl champions described as an injury to his left (non-throwing) shoulder. He remained in uniform and watched the second half from the sideline, wearing a baseball cap while Lynch – the 26th pick in this year’s draft – finished the Broncos’ ninth consecutive win.

After the Ravens (3-1) rallied from a nine-point deficit in the fourth quarter to go ahead with 3½ minutes remaining, Carr directed a 66-yard drive that ended with a 23-yard strike to Crabtree in the back of the end zone.

Three of his TD passes went to Crabtree, who finished with seven catches for 88 yards to help Oakland (3-1) to its third road win.

The totals by Ryan and Jones are the most ever allowed by Carolina.

One week after being held to one catch in a win at New Orleans, Jones had a 75-yard scoring catch late in the game as Atlanta solidified its early hold on the NFC South lead.

Carolina quarterback Cam Newton, the 2015 league MVP, left in the fourth quarter and was evaluated for concussion symptoms after taking a hit from Deion Jones on a successful 2-point run.

There appeared to be helmet-to-helmet contact but there was no penalty on the hit.

JAGUARS 30, COLTS 27: At London, Blake Bortles threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as Jacksonville held off a furious Indianapolis Colts rally for the Jaguars’ first win of the season. The victory at a raucous Wembley Stadium elevated Jacksonville into a tie with Indianapolis at 1-3 in the AFC South.

Andrew Luck led the Colts on three fourth-quarter touchdown drives to rattle the Jaguars’ nerves. But his fourthand-1 pass at the Jacksonville 49 with 1:36 remaining fell from the hands of

tight end Dwayne Allen to preserve the victory for under-fire Jaguars coach Gus Bradley.

SEAHAWKS 27, JETS 17: At East Rutherford, N.J., Russell Wilson was sharp and efficient despite playing with a sprained knee, throwing three touchdown passes.

Wilson finished 23 of 32 for 309 yards while wearing a brace on his leg as the Seahawks (3-1) won at MetLife Stadium for the first time since beating the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl in 2014.

REDSKINS 31, BROWNS 20: At Landover, Md., Kirk Cousins threw three touchdown passes, including two to tight end Jordan Reed, and the Washington Redskins cashed in on several trips to the red zone.

The Redskins (2-2) scored four red zone touchdowns against the Browns (04) after going 3 for 14 in their first three games. Cousins connected with Reed for 8- and 9-yard touchdowns, Chris Thompson for a 5-yard score, and running back Matt Jones scored from 1 yard as part of his 117-yard performance.

TEXANS 27, TITANS 20: At Houston, Will Fuller had a tiebreaking 67-yard punt return for a touchdown. It was the first time Houston (3-1) played without its star defensive end J.J. Watt since the 2010 season. Watt, out for the season after back surgery, had started 83 straight games since being drafted in 2011. Fuller also had 81 yards receiving and a touchdown.

Tennessee (1-3) was driving with less than two minutes remaining, but Marcus Mariota’s pass to former Texan Andre Johnson on fourth down was broken up.

SAINTS 35, CHARGERS 34: At San Diego, Drew Brees threw two touchdown passes in the final 4 minutes, 50 seconds

to rally the Saints to a stunning victory against Philip Rivers and the Chargers, who blew a 13-point lead by committing two crucial turnovers.

Brees overcome two interceptions to win in his return to San Diego, where he played his first five NFL seasons before being allowed to leave as a free agent. It also was the first win this season for the Saints (1-3).

With the Chargers (1-3) trying to protect a 34-21 lead, Melvin Gordon fumbled and Darryl Tapp recovered at the San Diego 13, setting up Brees’ 5-yard TD pass to Michael Thomas on fourth-and-2 to pull to 34-28 with 4:50 to go.

RAMS 17, CARDINALS 13: At Glendale, Ariz., Tavon Austin returned a punt 47 yards to set up Case Keenum’s 4-yard touchdown pass to Brian Quick with 2:41 to play, and the Rams improved to 3-1 for the first time in a decade with a victory over the Cardinals (1-3).

Arizona’s Carson Palmer threw for 288 yards and a touchdown but left the game to be evaluated for a concussion after his head slammed to the turf on a sack by Aaron Donald with 5:40 to play.

Arizona backup Drew Stanton was intercepted twice in the final minutes, including on a Hail Mary on the game’s final play.

The Associated Press DOVER, Del. – Martin Truex Jr. watched season after empty season as other drivers hoisted trophies and celebrated championships and wondered if he was running out of time to become a winner.

Bad cars, bad teams, bad luck.

Whatever the cause, Truex was a journeyman driver seemingly doomed to a mediocre career. Now, what quantifies as a downer in Truex’s career rebirth is that he failed to actually sweep

the first round of the Chase – but two of three is pretty dominant.

“We’re not messing around, I guess,” Truex said. “We are here to get it done.”

Truex’s late-season surge extended Sunday at Dover International Speedway for his second victory in the first three Chase races. Truex won for the fourth time this season in the No. 78 Toyota and paired this Chase win with his opening victory at Chicagoland.

“Kind of a bonus win,” crew chief Cole Pearn said. “We didn’t need it all.”

Well, plenty of other Chase drivers did.

Tony Stewart finished 13th and the three-time NASCAR champion was knocked out of contention in the first elimination race of the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

Chris Buescher and Chip Ganassi Racing teammates Kyle Larson and Jamie McMurray also dropped out of the Chase. The field was sliced from 16 drivers to 12.

Austin Dillon finished eighth and moved from outside the points cutoff of the Chase to a transfer spot and ad-

vanced to the next round.

Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch, Brad Keselowski, Matt Kenseth, Joey Logano, Chase Elliott, Jimmie Johnson, Denny Hamlin, Carl Edwards and Kurt Busch joined Truex and Dillon in the next round that opens at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

by Chase Elliott, Keselowski, Kenseth and Logano – the only five other cars that finished on the lead lap.

Central has seen the addition of students from Mokena who were at East and the departure of students from Manhattan to West. Similar shifts at the other schools led to a process that was implemented earlier this year, which has made the transition go smoothly.

“I think that all of the kids who are moving are having a positive impact on the schools that they are transferring into,” Lyke said.

“I would think that most of the schools benefited by having new kids come to them. I feel that the whole process has been a collective effort and everyone made sure that kids were the focus in this process.

“For kids who were involved in athletics and activities, that transition for them started right after the last day of school. They were meeting some of their new teammates, building friendships and the family concept of teams started to develop. So when the school year began, there were new friendships and team camaraderie had been built.”

Regardless of his setting, Lyke is a firm believer that if the right conditions are put into place, success can follow. But most importantly, he definitely wants participation in athletics to be a positive experience for the students at his school.

“Athletics is the avenue through which many young people develop themselves to their fullest potential,” Lyke said.

“My passion has always been to see personal growth and development of lifetime skills in students, coaches and community through the athletic experience.

“All of the support networks are in place for us to be successful, like a supportive community, parental guidance and a coaching staff that truly cares about the well-being of our student-athletes. My message to coaches is that if I interview kids after the season and ask them if they had a good experience, and they tell me yes, then we’re doing all of the right things.”

Lewis University soccer teams beat Illinois Springfield SUBMITTED REPORTS ROMEOVILLE – After suffering six straight losses, Lewis University’s men’s soccer team won its second in a row on Saturday by rallying for a 2-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over Illinois Springfield.

The Flyers (3-7, 2-6) trailed, 1-0, at halftime, and got the equalizer from John Horstman before Timm Adler converted a penalty in the 80th minute to put Lewis ahead.

Keeper Philip Huang recorded seven saves.

Lewis’ women’s team (5-5-1, 3-41) snapped a three-match losing streak by scoring twice in the second half and eventually beating Illinois Springfield, 3-1. Karlie Cummins connected off of an assist by Mackenzie Fuller, who scored the

NEW LENOX – In his 13th year as an athletic administrator, Matt Lyke has had to lead both developed and evolving sports programs.

But in his new role as athletic direc- Matt Lyke tor at Lincoln-Way Central, he faces the challenge of transitioning many athletes who are new to the school into a setting that’s well-established.

After the closure of Lincoln-Way North after last season, the boundaries were redrawn in District 210, with many students shifting from East to Central and also from Central to West.

The movement of students from one school to another rarely happens in Illinois because of a school being closed, but rather usually occurs when a district adds a new campus.

After serving for two years as TF South’s AD and two years as an assistant at Lincoln-Way

East before transitioning into his eight-year tenure as North’s AD, Lyke is excited to lead the sports programs at the original Lincoln-Way. Making the transition easier are the people whom he works with. They include principal Steve Provis, former AD and current assistant AD Jason Helbling and his administrative assistant, Missy McGrath.

“I’ve been extremely fortunate in my career to be involved with four really good schools and athletic departments and with great people,” Lyke said. “This community and school have high expectations, and I look forward to meeting those high expectations.

“It’s a privilege to be involved in the Lincoln-Way community and I’m proud to be presented with this opportunity to build upon this school’s rich tradition and to strive for an even higher level of excellence. I think that we can see a whole new generation of success here at Lincoln-Way Central, and I’m proud to be a part of that.”

Psoriasis not confined to the skin Dear Dr. K: My doctor thinks my arthritis and heart disease are connected to my psoriasis. Is this possible? I thought psoriasis was a skin condition.

Dear Reader: Psoriasis (pronounced so-RYEuh-sis) is named for an ancient Greek word meaning an itchy or scaly condition. It is classified as a skin disease, but psoriasis is the result of an immune system abnormality that can cause problems throughout the body.

With psoriasis, white blood cells of the immune system become overactive. They produce excess amounts of chemicals that trigger inflammation. The inflammation leads to abnormally rapid growth of cells in the skin’s outer layer. This causes plaques: raised, red patches covered with silvery scales on the elbows and knees – the classic sign of psoriasis.

But the effects of psoriasis are not always confined to the skin. The disease also can cause inflammation throughout the body.

This probably is the reason people with psoriasis have higher rates of various diseases that also are associated with a constant state of inflammation. These include diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and several types of cancer.

Nearly one-third of people with psoriasis develop psoriatic arthritis, which causes stiff, painful joints and other symptoms.

Several eye problems are more common with psoriasis, including conjunctivitis, blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids) and damage to the cornea.

When psoriasis involves only the skin, it often can be treated just by medicines applied to the skin. Very mild cases of psoriasis may improve with moisturizers and some sunlight.

But most people need other treatments: Ointments, gels or lotions. The most common are corticosteroids, which come in varying strengths. They quickly reduce in-

Phototherapy. This treatment uses carefully controlled exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, which helps slow the growth of skin cells. UV light combined with medicines called psoralens often is more potent than just UV light (a treatment called PUVA).

Systemic theray. If your psoriasis has caused more than skin problems, this can have implications for the kind of treatment your doctor may recommend. Treatments that fight inflammation in multiple parts of the body may be required. Medicines that do this include methotrexate, retinoids and cyclosporine.

Research in recent years has led to biologic agents that directly neutralize some of the body’s chemicals (called cytokines) that cause inflammation. They have proved very effective in severe psoriasis. Though they carry a risk of serious side effects, the benefits generally are greater than the risks.

Exercise and weight loss, which help fight inflammation, may help. Adopting other healthy lifestyle choices, such as avoiding tobacco and eating well, can help prevent health problems linked to psoriasis.

Dear Abby: A DEAR ABBY woman I’ll call Betty Jo works Jeanne in my office. We Phillips only are casual acquaintances.

We speak in passing when time permits, but she never has invited me to lunch with her or suggested any interaction outside the job.

About three months ago, Betty Jo mentioned she and her husband were planning a renewal of wedding vows and said she was going to invite me. In my mailbox at work, I found a poorly photocopied version of a formal invitation, with the following handwritten at the top in large block letters: “CASH GIFTS ARE CHEERFULLY ACCEPTED!” I did not plan on attending, since I felt if Betty Jo really wanted me, she could have at least sent me an original invitation to my home.

Two weeks ago, while knitting during my lunch break, Betty Jo came up to me and asked about the item I was working on. She then informed me since I hadn’t yet given her a gift, I could complete my knitting project and give that to her. Abby, I was flabbergasted. It’s a custom-designed angora sweater, a gift for a cherished friend.

I mumbled something about being “busy as a bee” with projects to complete, and since that day I have gone out of my way to avoid any contact with Betty Jo. I’ve even managed to find an office with a door that locks in which to take my breaks.

First, am I behind the times or is requesting money on an invitation a new trend? Second, why would this rude and clueless woman request such an elaborate gift from someone she barely knows? What happens after West leads the diamond seven?

South starts with only five top tricks: three spades, one diamond and one club. He must play on both hearts and clubs before he has nine winners. The danger, of course, is that the opponents will first take too many tricks in diamonds, hearts and clubs. What is the diamond situation?

If the suit is 4-3, South needs the club finesse to work. But if they are 5-2, what does East hold?

It must be honor-doubleton. West would have led the king with all three honors. So, declarer’s first step is to win trick one with dummy’s ace to block the suit. Then what?

It looks tempting to turn to hearts, but here that is fatal. East wins, cashes the diamond queen, and shifts to clubs. West gets in with his king and takes three diamond tricks -- down one.

Instead, South should take the club finesse first. Yes, it loses, and West can continue with a low diamond, but he has no entry left. (If he also has the heart ace, declarer probably had no chance.)
