Eisenhower Academy in Joliet named National Blue Ribbon School

Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – Blue confetti dropped and the hands of 266 elementary students rose in the air to catch it as it fell to the ground.

Cheers ensued as the children realized their school was named a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School for its high achieving status.

In a student assembly Wednesday, a video from U.S. Secretary of Education John B. King Jr. was played for students, staff, teachers and board members of Joliet Public Schools District 86. In the video, Eisenhower Academy was named one of 329 schools nationwide to receive the distinction.

Eisenhower was one of 16 public schools in Illinois to get the honor, according to a news release from the Illinois State Board of Education. The only other area school to receive the designation was Kennedy Junior High School in Naperville School District 203.

District 86 spokeswoman Sandy Zalewski said this was the first time in school and district history a school has been a National Blue Ribbon School.

“This gives Eisenhower and the district national recognition. The teachers, staff and students work so hard,” Zalewski said.

Eisenhower has established itself as a magnet school, where students who reside in District 86 must test average or above average to attend. Superintendent Theresa Rouse said the curriculum has an intentional focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and encourages students to learn beyond the basics.

Fifth-grade student Ryland Denson was among those at the Wednesday’s assembly.

ing on all day, it’s hands-on work. It’s not easy, but we get it done, and it’s awesome,” Denson said. “And, now I guess I can say that I go to one of the 329 best schools in the country, so that’s awesome, too.”

Eisenhower Principal Wendy Wolgan said schools must be in the top 15 percent of all schools in the state when ranked by student achievement and assessments in order to be eligible to be nominated for the honor by the Illinois State Board of Education.

After the school was nominated, Wolgan, Zalewski, teachers and staff came together to fill out the lengthy application for final review by the U.S. Department of Education. Wolgan said she received indicators that Eisenhower may have won, but the official announcement was Wednesday, which she said was extreme-

“This award was a collaborative process between staff, students and parents at this school. We hold ourselves to high expectations and our school has a family-like atmosphere,” Wolgan said.

The U.S. Department of Education initiated the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program in 1982 to bring public attention to exemplary schools in the United States and to facilitate communication and sharing of best practices within and among schools, according to the news release.

Eisenhower will receive a plaque and flag to display at the school from the U.S. Department of Education at a ceremony in November in Washington, D.C. The following week, on Nov. 16, the school has planned a community ceremony, during which it will raise the new flag.

TRUMP VISITS BOLINGBROOK Fundraiser attracts mostly protesters, some supporters

fsarver@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – Between 150 and 200 people were outside the Bolingbrook Golf Club on Wednesday for several hours – but they weren’t waiting to hit a bucket of balls.

Most of them were protesting Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s private fundraising luncheon held at the club.

Protesters and media were in a fenced-off area across from the facility. A sign on the club property said: “Closed to the public, private event.”

Donald Members of severTrump al groups – including local organization Suburban Families Against Hate and national group Fight for $15 – were near the club before 10 a.m., ahead of the 11:30 a.m. start time for the luncheon, which had entry prices ranging from $1,000 to $250,000.

There were no sightings of Trump’s motorcade on Rodeo Drive – the main entryway to the club – and he wasn’t clearly seen by the crowd outside. He likely entered from Kings Road to the east, which runs along a cornfield.

Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar confirmed in a phone interview after the event that former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani spoke to the crowd of about 300. He listed Chicago Cubs co-owner Todd Ricketts and former Chicago Bear Dan Hampton as two other big names who attended. Claar said DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin also was there.

Before, during and after the luncheon, which ended at 1 p.m., several debates of varying volume took place between Trump supporters and protesters. Topics included immigration, the economy, Trump’s comments about various groups of people and who had a right to stand where on the protest grounds.

Bolingbrook resident Ryan Wilder joined the protest from about 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wilder is a union machinist and an Air Force veteran, and has four nephews in the Marines.

He said he came to protest because of Trump’s “divisive message.”

“I couldn’t let this go by,” Wilder said of Trump’s visit to Bolingbrook.

“His message is agitating and there’s no place for it.”

He took issue with Trump’s description of America, saying the candidate paints the country as a “dystopia.”

“The way he describes America, you’d swear we were in a ‘Mad Max’ movie,” he said.

“I couldn’t let this go by.

Wilder said he doesn’t appreciate the way Trump has treated people who have either worked for, or with, the billionaire, and said Trump is anti-union.

Wilder and Army veteran Dan Clark of Romeoville have also been bothered by Trump’s comments about military veterans. Wilder ob-

jected to Trump’s July comments that a Muslim soldier who died in Iraq had “sacrificed nothing.”

Trump then stated in a TV interview that he had “made a lot of sacrifices” while highlighting his business accomplishments.

Clark recalled when Trump said U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, was “not a war hero.” McCain spent more than five years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam.

Although many veterans have been outspoken Trump supporters, Clark said those he knows do not support Trump.

Mark Knutson of the Will County Progressives was dressed as a taco truck featuring a menu that included “tiny hand tacos” and a “tamale wall.”

Nicki Serbin, chairwoman for the group, who worked with Knutson on his costume, said it was inspired by a Trump surrogate who warned Hillary Clinton winning the election would result in taco trucks on every corner. She said it was meant to be satirical and entertaining without being adversarial.

“This is kind of a stressful situation and we thought a little levity might be helpful,” Serbin said.

Trump supporters outnumbered

Although more supporters came to Trump’s aid as the day wore on, protesters outnumbered supporters about 4-to-2. One supporter, Chicago resident Brian Strainis, was waving an American flag and said he was there to support Trump and the police.

He said the demonstrations Wednesday had been peaceful, unlike the “mosh pit” in March when Trump came to Chicago for a rally that was canceled over security concerns after scuffles broke out between Trump supporters and protesters.

“It was a disgrace – that gives Chicago its name, Chi-Raq,” he said.

Jim Bockelmann of Villa Park said he came to support Trump because he finds the candidate honest.

“Let’s give him a chance,” he said.

Bolingbrook mayor criticized

During the luncheon, Suburban Families Against Hate led the charge against Claar’s support of Trump.

Claar was one of the hosts of Wednesday’s event.

Norman Brown, a member of the organization, said the group will hold Claar accountable in the 2017 mayoral election for inviting Trump to a facility paid for by the tax dollars of a diverse community.

The Bolingbrook Golf Club broke ground in 1999 and opened in 2002, according to Herald-News archives.

In March 2002, the Bolingbrook Village Board voted to approve a $72.7 million bond sale to refinance some of the village’s debt, and among other things, build an $18 million clubhouse, according to the newspaper’s archives.

Bob Jaskiewicz, a former Bolingbrook Village Board candidate, told the crowd that Claar and his “board puppets” only “care about themselves and not the residents.”

Claar said he supported Jeb Bush in the primaries but switched to Trump when Bush dropped out.

Claar said he believes Trump will get things done.

Claar said Trump “calls it like he sees it” but added he doesn’t agree with everything the nominee has said. Claar’s interest in fixing a nation with $19 trillion in debt and crumbling infrastructure is the main reason he’s supporting Trump.

6 Sentencing underway for Homer

Glen lawyer-turned-defendant

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A judge Wednesday started sentencing proceedings for a Homer Glen lawyer convicted of trying to buy his wife’s murder from inside the Will County Jail. Robert W. Gold-Smith, 54, has repeatedly sought to delay the 20to 40-year prison sentence that will be imposed since he was found guilty by Judge Daniel Rozak after a bench trial that ended in March.

Gold-Smith, a former bankruptcy attorney, began by asking Rozak to postpone proceedings once more so defense attorney Chuck Bretz could have more time to research the case and file an appearance to represent him. According to Gold-Smith, Brian K. McDaniel, the same inmate who wore a wire to record Gold-Smith’s solicitation for murder, also produced a similar recording that led to charges against Bretz’s client, Christian Shepherd.

“It’s highly unlikely lightning could strike twice. We have the same type of crime, the same informant,” GoldSmith said.

Shepherd, who is facing sexual abuse charges, offered then-inmates Franklin Bryant and Daniel Robinson money and

a car to kill his victim and investigators, according to charging documents filed in Shepherd’s case.

But Rozak noted Bretz had nearly two months and a few status hearing dates to file on Gold-Smith’s behalf, and Gold-Smith, who has represented himself, was already granted several delays and had been informed the sentencing hearing would be Wednesday.

Gold-Smith and his ex-wife, Victoria Smith, were going through a contentious divorce when he allegedly punched her outside a courtroom in November 2010. That case still is pending.

After violating an order of protection, Gold-Smith was put in the county jail in March 2011 and offered McDaniel $5,000 to kill his ex in October 2012, according to trial testimony.

Before Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Adam Capelli could present any testimony or argument toward Gold-Smith’s sentence, the defendant argued he was entitled to a new trial. In a lengthy speech, Gold-Smith cited several legal precedent cases, said improper pretrial proceedings made his trial and conviction “null and void,” and accused Rozak of showing bias against him.

LOCAL BRIEF JOLIET – Smoke testing is expected to continue this weekend in downtown Joliet.

The city did smoke testing in August in order to find locations in the downtown area where stormwater is getting into the city’s sanitary system as part of ongoing efforts to improve the city of Joliet’s infrastructure.

Testing will be conducted again Saturday, according to a news release from the city.

The study, being performed by the engineering firm Wheaton-based RJN Group Inc., includes smoke testing of the sanitary sewers in these boundaries: the Des Plaines River to the west, Washington Street to the south, Scott Street to the east, and Clinton Street to the north.

“You don’t get to handle your case one way and then when that fails you don’t get to handle it a different way,” the judge said.

The smoke is nontoxic, creates no fire hazard, leaves no residue, dissipates quickly and is harmless, according to the news release.

Marijuana violation reduced in Minooka

Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – Minooka trustees amended Tuesday the village’s Cannabis Control Act, reducing the seriousness of possession of 10 grams or less.

Minooka is following suit with the law Gov. Bruce Rauner signed, effective July 29, 2016, making possession of not more than 10 grams a civil law violation instead of a Class B misdemeanor.

The ordinance was approved by all present; trustee Rudy Martin was absent.

“The state has become more lenient with marijuana laws, so as a village we took steps to become more in line with state law,” Village Administrator Dan Duffy said.

“We have no opinion for or against, we are just being more in line with the state,” Duffy added.

The change makes it a civil offense within village limits, with a fine up to $200, for possession of 10 grams or less of marijuana. Possession of more than 10 grams up to 30 grams remains a Class

B misdemeanor with a fine of $250.

Following the meeting, Minooka Police Chief Justin Meyer said he isn’t happy about the change, statewide or in the village.

Marijuana can be a gateway to harder drugs, particularly with youth, Meyer said. He fears people will think marijuana use is no big deal.

“I’m afraid this is going to open a Pandora’s Box,” Meyer said. “I hate to see marijuana become legal.”

The statewide law had no impact on local ordinances, Meyer said, as each municipality is able to choose whether or not to mirror state laws.

Village to replace 114 trees

Trustees also approved this week the purchase of 114 trees at a cost of $32,499 from Fields of Caton Farms as a start to the village’s tree replacement program.

So far 400 trees have been removed from village parks and right-of-ways, mostly due to destruction by the Emerald Ash Borer, said Public Works Director Ryan Anderson. Another 400 to 500 still need to be cut down.

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced Wednesday that closures will take place near the intersection of Route 53 and Strip Mine Road in Wilmington for an intersection improvement project starting Monday, weather permitting.

The improvements are part of the Chicago-to-St. Louis high-speed rail program, according to an IDOT news release. Daily lane closures will be needed to complete the work, which will reduce the roadway to one lane with flaggers while construction activities are in progress.

The northbound Route 53 shoulder will be closed in order to construct temporary pavement. A new traffic pattern is scheduled for later in the fall, accord-

ing to the news release, and the overall project is expected to be completed in the spring.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area.

The upgrades are part of the highspeed rail program to accommodate passenger service between Chicago and St. Louis at speeds up to 110 mph, reducing the length of the trip by one hour, according to the news release.

The entire corridor is tentatively scheduled to be complete by the end of 2017. About 150 crossings along the route will be improved to include additional safety features.

Proposal would increase pay for mayor

Shaw Media correspondent SHOREWOOD – Shorewood village trustees discussed Tuesday during the Committee of the Whole meeting a proposal by Mayor Rick Chapman to add more duties to the role of the mayor and increase compensation.

The proposal suggested that, on top of the duties of mayor and tobacco and liquor control commissioner, the mayor could take on other jobs to have a set 20 hours in the office a week. Some of those suggested duties included meetings, event coordinating, mayoral and government leagues, chamber and business events, newsletters, monthly reports, personnel involvement and village administrator collaboration.

Trustee Cookie Kirkland said having set hours could eliminate possible future candidates who would like to run for mayor but are still employed full time. She noted the board needs time to find what they expect from the position.

The mayor makes $17,000 a year.

“I have a firm belief that people who run for this position run to serve the community. Some mayors do a little, some a lot – that’s their commitment and their choice. Rick does a lot, but elected officials shouldn’t be doing it because of what they are paid.”

Chapman’s proposal asked the board for $3,000 a month in compensation, which would total $36,000 annually.

Chapman was out of town and not at the meeting.

Village attorney Dave Silverman suggested he write an ordinance for a bump in pay and leave the hours and duties part blank, allowing the board to come up with what trustees feel are appropriate expectations for the mayor.

Other business

During the regular board meeting before the Committee of the Whole meeting, most action items pertained to village maintenance.

Bryan Welch of Christopher B. Burke Engineering addressed the board concerning the Mound Road bridge rehabilitation project. The initial overlay project was approved

by the board in August using 2015 inspection reports.

Another inspection was done this month, which found existing patches to the bridge had deteriorated substantially, to the extent that at some locations the overlay would have difficulty bonding to the bridge deck.

Welch also said that a structural engineer for Christopher B. Burke sounded the bridge deck and found other potential partial-depth patch areas that are not visible, but could cause problems in the future.

The board approved a proposal from MYS Inc. for the Mound Road bridge rehabilitation partial-depth patching for $22,275.

Public Works Director Chris Drey brought a streetlight maintenance proposal to the board for consideration. He said six 35-foot poles on Black Road and 51 35-foot poles on Route 59 south of Route 52 need to be repainted due to being placed in high-traffic areas.

The board approved awarding the contract to Muscat Painting for $33,047. Work will begin this fall and continue in the spring if needed.

Tickets go on sale Friday. But the Rialto already has sold 400 presale tickets to the Kacey Musgrave Fan Club, Berry said.

The Rialto stopped booking shows after parting ways with General Manager Randy Green in March and then launching a search for an outside management company to take over operations.

VenuWorks is just beginning to book shows, but more apparently are in the works.

“We have another show that is kind of in the chute ready to announce here,” Berry said. Other shows also are in the works, he added.

Companies doing the sign work are Ireland Ltd. of Joliet, which bid $34,960 to do the vertical sign sanding and painting, and Grate Signs of Joliet, which bid $15,730 to do the marquee work.

Donations for the work include $25,000 from the Rotary Club of Joliet and $25,000 from the Rialto Square Theatre Volunteer Organization. The Rialto received a $27,865 federal grant through the Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program.

JOLIET – Things are getting brighter at the Rialto Square Theatre – at least in some ways.

The Rialto marquee will get new bulbs and panels, the first repairs to the sign since a late 2014 controversy erupted over an unpopular plan to replace it with a modern marquee.

The marquee and vertical sign with the word “Rialto” on it have stayed the same since, faded paint and all.

“Anyone who goes out there and takes a look can see what bad shape it’s in,” building operations manager Michael Biedron told the Rialto board Wednesday.

The Rialto board approved two contracts totaling just more than $50,000 to put in the new bulbs and panels on the marquee and repaint the vertical Rialto sign.

The work is funded with a grant and donations received by the Rialto for an alternative marquee project developed since the theater abandoned the 2014 design. The work, which starts immediately, won’t include a digital board or Scott Street sign that are part of the long-term project. But the board ap-

Joliet police: Gang member had gun, ecstasy in car

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Two men, including a known gang member on parole, were charged Sunday after police found a loaded gun in their car.

Joliet Police Department Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said shortly after 5 p.m. police saw a red Volkswagen near Jefferson Street and Larkin Avenue and stopped Jeffrey I. Faint the vehicle on Larkin Avenue close to Interstate 80.

“The vehicle description had been given out for officer safety because of possible involvement in a shooting at Juniper Terrence T. and Fairview,” Gregory Williams noted.

A canine unit was called to the scene and indicated there were drugs in the car, according to Gregory. Officers found seven ecstasy pills, he said, and a Diamondback handgun with 14 rounds of ammunition and a cleaning kit.

The car was occupied by Jeffrey I. Faint, 21, of the 600 block of Elmwood Avenue in Joliet, Terrence T. Williams,

21, of the 1100 block of Magnolia Avenue in Joliet, a 22-year-old woman and a 17-year-old girl.

“After conducting interviews, detectives learned Faint and Williams had both had the gun between them,” Gregory said.

The woman, who owns the car, and the girl were released without being charged.

Williams was charged with drug possession and unlawful use of a weapon.

Faint was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a street gang member and drug possession.

According to the Illinois Department of Corrections, Faint is on parole for aggravated discharge of a firearm. Nine days after being paroled in April from the Illinois River Correctional Center, Faint was shot twice in the back and three times in his left arm while he was standing with a group of people in the 1500 block of Fairmont Avenue, according to Joliet police.

In July 2011, Faint was on a three-day furlough from juvenile detention for his father’s funeral when he shot a 19-yearold man in a drive-by shooting at Fourth and Wilson avenues in Joliet, according to Herald-News records.

LOCAL BRIEF Regulators: Doctor concocts vaccines with cat saliva, vodka

CHICAGO – Illinois regulators have suspended the license of a suburban Chicago doctor who allegedly gives patients modified vaccinations containing cat saliva and vodka.

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation on Wednesday ordered the emergency action in the interest of public safety.

The order says Dr. Ming Te Lin told investigators he’s been preparing alternative vaccinations for children at his office in Flossmoor for more than a decade. He adds alcohol and sometimes cat saliva gathered with a swab from a cat’s mouth for patients with allergies.

He told investigators he uses a device called the “WaveFront 2000” to detoxify vaccinations from mercury.

Houston Adams Sr., passed away on Sept. 5, 2016, at his home in Yuma, AZ. Born in Joliet on May 3, 1951, to Hattie Adams.

A graduate of Joliet West High School and U.S. Air Force veteran. Upon leaving the Air Force, he relocated to Los Angeles. A loving father and family man, Houston’s mighty laugh, big heart, jokes and love for family will truly be missed.

Dana Lynn Bollinger (nee Douglas), age 56, of Custer Perk, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2016, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home in Joliet.

Born Nov. 9, 1959, in Joliet.

Dana recently retired from the Angelo’s stores in Wilmington. She managed the sports store and was the stores account manager.

Surviving are her mother, Treva (nee Runyon) Douglas; husband, Mark A. Bollinger; devoted children, Daniel Liam Douglas and Eileen Marie Bollinger; and her much loved grandson Keagan Liam Douglas. He was a master tinkerer. Raymond will be truly missed.

Benjamin Clare Pisha, age 83. Returned to his heavenly home on Sept. 22, 2016, after his battle with Alzheimer’s Dementia.

Ben was born to the late Henry and Clara Pisha in Joliet on Dec. 26, 1932. He loved his work in maintenance at Joliet West High School and was proud to say he built all 3 of his homes that he shared with his wife and children.

Ben married his best friend and the love of his life, Catherine Shepherd on August 15, 1959, in Joliet, Illinois and was blessed with 2 daughters and a son.

Ben helped raised his children with patience, love and dedication. He spoke often of the wonderful memories made driving his family to most of the 48 contiguous United States in his home made camper. He was so very proud of his children and grandchildren and loved them all equally.

He was completely devoted to spending time with God’s word and his six grandchildren.

Benjamin is survived by his wife, Catherine; daughters, Deborah (Richard) Deal and Emily (Scott) Pittman; son Andrew (Xai) Pisha; and his grandchildren, Carolyn Deal, Matheu, Joshua, Maureen, Henry and Benjamin Pisha.

We will miss him deeply but are comforted to know that he no longer suffers and is now home with our heavenly Father.

A look at Tribune Tower as it changes hands

CHICAGO – A 36-story Chicago landmark, the Tribune Tower, has been sold – gargoyles, flying buttresses and all.

Tribune Media Co. announced Wednesday that it closed the sale of the tower and two other properties this week. The company has received $430 million in gross proceeds for the assets, and may receive up to an additional $45 million in contingent payments.

The Tribune Tower, purchased by CIM Group, sits on three acres along Chicago’s Michigan Avenue.

CHAMPAIGN – An arrest warrant has been issued in the deadly weekend shooting at a party near the University of Illinois campus for an 18-year-old man who was released earlier this month from a state boot camp, authorities said Wednesday.

Prosecutors said Robbie Patton of Champaign will be charged with first-degree murder in the early Sunday shooting that killed a 22-year-old man and injured three other people.

The first fragments were collected by Tribune correspondents in the field. All told, nearly 150 stones from notable locations around the world are embedded in the building’s walls. Other stones are from the Taj Mahal, the Colosseum, the Cave of the Nativity in Bethlehem and a piece of steel recovered from the World Trade Center.

Man freed after evidence clears him of 1992 murder

CHICAGO – A Chicago man sent to prison for the 1992 rape and murder of a 6-year-old boy is free after his conviction was vacated by a Cook County judge.

New DNA evidence shows Mark Maxson did not kill Lindsey Murdock. The 55-yearold Maxson was freed Tuesday from Stateville Correctional Center near Joliet.

In a statement, the Cook County state’s attorney office said reinvestigation of the case determined Maxson’s conviction couldn’t stand. Prosecutors said the investigation into the boy’s murder is ongoing.

Investigators focused on Maxson after he told a reporter he’d bought chips for the child and told him to go home. Murdock was found dead the next day.

Mike proudly served in the U.S. Army with the 854th Transportation Company

in Viet Nam from 1965 to 1967.

Mike’s many interests included creating stained glass hangings and kaleidoscopes. He studied the night sky and created gorgeous cottage gardens in his back yard. Trips to Anna Maria Island, FL, afforded him new things to marvel: sea birds, sea turtles, shark’s teeth and the ever-changing ocean. Fishing, especially with his grandson, Xander, was another favorite.

Books on top of books, movies on top of movies – he could never get enough of any of them.

To quote one of his favorite movie cowboys, John Wayne remarked: “Tomorrow hopes we have learned something from yesterday.”

A Memorial honoring Mike’s life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016, at 2 p.m. at LifeSpring Church in Plainfield.

TOWNVILLE, S.C. – A teenager killed his father at their home Wednesday before going to a nearby elementary school and opening fire with a handgun, wounding two students and a teacher, authorities said.

The teen was apprehended within minutes of the school shooting in this rural town about 110 miles northeast of Atlanta.

One of the students was shot in the leg and the other in the foot, Capt. Garland Major with the Anderson County sheriff’s office said. Both students were male.

The female teacher was hit in the shoulder. Before the shooting at Townville Elementary about 1:45 p.m., the teen gunned down his 47-year-old father, Jeffrey Osborne, at their home about 2 miles from the school, authorities said.

“These forces will be primarily to enable Iraqi security forces and also (Kurdish) Peshmerga in the operations to isolate and collapse ISIL’s control over Mosul, but also to protect and expand Iraqi security forces’ gains elsewhere in Iraq,” Defense Secretary Ash Carter told reporters Wednesday.

WASHINGTON – In a resounding rebuke, Democrats joined with Republicans on Wednesday to hand Barack Obama the first veto override of his presidency, voting overwhelmingly to allow families of Sept. 11 victims to sue Saudi Arabia in U.S. courts for its alleged backing of the attackers.

Both the House and Senate voted decisively to reverse Obama’s decision to scuttle the legislation. Democrats in both chambers abandoned the president in large numbers despite warnings from Obama and top national security officials that flaws in the bill could put U.S. interests, troops and intelligence personnel at risk.

The Senate vote was 97-1, with only Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., backing the president. The House vote a few hours later was 348-77, with 123 Democrats rebuffing the president and voting to override. Obama said during a CNN interview that overriding his veto was a mistake that may set a “dangerous precedent.”

Lawmakers said their priority wasn’t Saudi Arabia, but the 9/11 victims and their families who continue to demand justice 15 years after attackers killed nearly 3,000 people in New York, the Washington, D.C., area, and Pennsylvania.

Fifteen of the 19 Sept. 11 hijackers were Saudis.

“Overriding a presidential veto is something we don’t take lightly, but it was important in this case that the families of the victims of 9/11 be allowed to pursue justice, even if that pursuit causes some diplomatic discom-

forts,” said Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., a chief sponsor of the bill.

Speaking at a forum in Washington, CIA Director John Brennan said he was concerned about how Saudi Arabia, a key U.S. ally in the Middle East, would interpret the bill. He said the Saudis provide significant amounts of information to the U.S. to help foil extremist plots.

“It would be an absolute shame if this legislation, in any way, influenced the Saudi willingness to continue to be among our best counterterrorism partners,” Brennan said.

On CNN, Obama said that a few lawmakers who backed the bill weren’t aware of its potential impact. He didn’t name them.

“And, frankly, I wish Congress here had done what’s hard,” he said. “It was, you know, basically a political vote.”

But Republicans and Democrats said the White House had been slow to respond to the bill and miscalculated lawmakers’ intent to act on the legislation along with the 15th anniversary of the terror attacks. When Obama and senior national security officials such as Defense Secretary Ash Carter finally weighed in, it was too late.

The Senate passed the bill by voice vote in May. The Obama White House then made the mistake of thinking the bill would stall in the Republican-controlled House. In August, 9/11 families pressured Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., while he was on a campaign swing in New York.

On Sept. 9, two days before the 15th anniversary of 9/11, the House passed the bill by voice vote with little debate.

Believe it or not, there’s no need to be suspicious or concerned. Compared with other annuities – many of which have terrible reputations and are disgustingly complex, with huge sales costs and exorbitant annual fees – QLACs stand apart like a swan among geese.

They’re easy to understand, and there are no annual fees. QLACs are not linked to the performance of the stock market, and your payment is fixed

and guaranteed. There can also be significant tax advantages.

Assume you’re 65. Here’s how it buries. First, select a large insurance company. Chose one that has a very high A.M. Best rating, a long record of attractive dividends and a professional sales force. The money can come from your taxable account, a maturing certificate of deposit or a retirement account, such as an IRA or a 401(k). You get nothing back until you reach your 85th birthday, when the insurer begins paying you a fixed monthly income. Say you invest $100,000 in a QLAC at age 65. Twenty years from now, you can expect to receive $50,000 a year or a monthly check for $4,166.66 forever or until you pass away, whichever comes first. By comparison, if you wanted to create the same $50,000 payout with AAA corporate bonds, you would need to invest about $350,000, assuming a 4 percent interest rate.

And you can take the money from your IRA without meeting the required minimum distribution from the portion of your account that’s devoted to the QLAC. When you’re 85, the monthly payments from the insur-

er are deemed to fulfill the required minimum distribution for the amount invested in the QLAC. There are some caveats, according to Northwestern Mutual: 1) If you pass before 85, the insurance company keeps every penny you invested.

2) You are limited in the amount of retirement money you can use to purchase a QLAC. The maximum is 25 percent of the value of your retirement accounts or $125,000, whichever is less. 3) Those with the good fortune to be on the distaff side have to invest about 23 percent more because ladies have longer life spans than gentlemen.

There are various riders, such as cost-of-living adjustments and return of premium, that you can purchase for your QLAC. The riders are not cheap, and their costs vary by insurer. You might also consider a reverse-annuity mortgage (the income is tax-free) to increase your lifetime income with zero risk to your homeownership.

ROMEOVILLE – The No. 24 spot in the U.S. News & World Report Midwest Regional Universities rankings belongs to Lewis University. Once again, the university is in the Top 25 universities on the list, climbing four spots from last year.

Lewis University’s overall score increased by 12 points this year, according to a news release from the university. Among the key factors considered in the Midwest Regional Universities rankings were student selectivity, graduation rate performance, retention of students, financial resources, faculty resources, alumni giving and evaluations by administrators at peer institutions.

Oswego edges Minooka in tournament, claims SPC crown

Shaw Media correspondent OSWEGO – Oswego snapped Minooka’s three-year hold on the Southwest Prairie Conference boys golf championship Wednesday at Fox Bend Golf Course.

On a cool, windy and somewhat rainy day, Oswego shot a 314 to Minooka’s 316 to overtake the Indians for the

conference crown.

The SPC uses a combination of the regular-season nine-hole dual meets and a weighted version for the final 18hole tournament. Minooka was undefeated during the dual-meet portion of the season, and Oswego’s only loss was to the Indians. But the Panthers’ victory Wednesday was enough to place them in front of the Indians.

In the final conference standings,

Plainfield North finished third, with Plainfield East and Plainfield Central in a tie for fourth. Joliet Township and Oswego East tied for sixth and Plainfield South and Romeoville rounded out the final standings.

The individual battle Wednesday was just as close with Minooka’s senior Dan Anfield and Plainfield North junior Nate Kirberg each carding 73s for the co-championship.

“It’s pretty cool to win as an individual, but I’m devastated we didn’t win as a team,” Anfield said. “On the first tee today it was pretty cold, then it got good, then it was raining, so it was all over the place with weather, and it was also windy. I left some strokes out there today, but I’m sure everyone can say that.

Plainfield Athletic Hall of Fame welcomes 3 inductees

cherron@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Two coaches and one athlete will make up the 18th class of inductees into the Plainfield High School Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday.

Wrestler Chris Smith and coaches Al Pagnusat and Bill Conrad are this year’s selections and bring the total to 38 individuals and seven teams who have been inducted into the hall since its initial class in 1999.

Conrad started both the boys and girls tennis teams at Plainfield High School; Pagnusat had a successful 14year stint as the Wildcats’ girls track and field coach; and Smith was a fouryear regular who won 151 matches during his career.

Pagnusat and Smith will both be involved in Saturday’s activities, which are also part of the school’s long-standing homecoming tradition. Plainfield

“We, as a team, need to get focused. I’m sure our practices will be pretty intense getting ready for the regionals next week. Our goal all this season has been to make it to the state finals.”

Kirberg echoed many of the same thoughts on his round and the team going forward.

“I played pretty well today,” Kirberg said. “I like the wind, and it really wasn’t that bad.

We are not used to the cooler weather because we haven’t had any until today. I have a lot of momentum moving into the regionals at Prairie Bluff and I like that course. Our team is also coming around, so you never know what can happen.”

Only eight golfers on the day broke 80.

Minooka also received a round of 78 from Brandon Brodzinski, with Jake Bugajski carding an 82, Noah Manzo 83 and Matt Sitar 89. Plainfield Central’s Jake Hawkins recorded a 78.

“I’m really disappointed in our performance today, it was not a good day,” Minooka coach Brian Petrovic said. “We got off to a poor start, and you could see it in their body language.

We weren’t mentally tough. It was cold and windy, but it was like that for everyone. We have some young kids, but it’s not varsity golf when you shoot in the 90s.

Central plays Joliet West at 1 p.m. in the annual Saturday afternoon homecoming football game. Conrad, who lives in Scottsdale, Arizona, is unable to return this weekend.

On Saturday, Smith and Pagnusat will take part in the 9 a.m. homecoming parade and then be officially inducted in a ceremony at 11:30 a.m. during the alumni tea in the cafeteria.

They also will be recognized at halftime of the football game, along with previous hall of famers.

Coached in 28 different sports seasons in the Plainfield School District from 1971-1996. He started Plainfield’s two tennis programs and also coached basketball Bill Conrad and golf. Was the head coach of girls and boys tennis from 1984-1995, posting a 112-66 mark with

“It’s awesome to win, but these young men on this team have done the work,” Pohlmann said. “To beat a quality program like Minooka, we knew the challenge. They (Indians) have a first-class program and have not only pushed us to get better, but this entire conference.”

The 18-member all-conference team is selected in the same manner as the team champion, based on a season-long point system with more emphasis placed on Wednesday’s tournament.

All-conference selections included Minooka’s Anfield, Brodzinski, Bugajski and Manzo; Plainfield East’s Jack Kelly, Justin Blaney and Mike Burke; Plainfield Central’s R.J. Kohlstedt and Hawkins; Plainfield South’s Parker Govern; Joliet’s Jack Pierson, and North’s Kirberg. Oswego was represented

by Craig Schlegel, Zach Krisch, Mason Lee and Tommy Falcone, while Oswego East’s Alex Hwang and Sam Behnke also made the team.

the girls. Along with team parents, he provided transportation to meets in tennis programs’ early years. Also worked with the Plainfield Park District, which co-sponsored teams and helped build courts. Had a total of 19 state qualifiers and 11 sectional champions combined for the two teams.

Al Pagnusat

Was the head coach of Plainfield Central’s girls track and field program from 19952008. From 1999-2007, his squads placed in the top three at conference, Al Pagnusat which included five titles. He coached 39 individual conference champions and 98 all-conference athletes during his Wildcat career. In 2002, his team was second in the sectional, a school-best, while three other teams placed third. He coached six individual sectional champions and

qualified a total of 41 individuals for the IHSA meet. His teams went 115-27 in dual meets and also set a school record with 43 straight victories.

Chris Smith

Four-year Plainfield Central wrestler from 2001-2004, won 80 percent of matches three times. He had the eighth-best career win percentage in program history and the third- Chris Smith most wins in a year.

Earned all-conference honors all four years and also won three conference titles. He captured two regional championships and also qualified for sectionals three times. Qualified for the state meet twice and earned All-State honors in 2003 after finishing sixth.

Wrestled at Eastern Illinois University and coached wrestling in Plainfield for several years.

In Wednesday’s column, we examined which area football teams would be involved if the state playoffs were beginning now, and which teams would fall into which class.

Things could change, for better or worse, over the last four weeks of the season. Here, we will review remaining opponents for area teams that have not yet clinched postseason berths (Wilmington and Lemont are 5-0 and in), and which games could be keys to their playoff entry.

Lincoln-Way East (4-1): The final needed victory will come Friday at Andrew, with Sandburg, Bradley and Lockport on tap after that.

Lockport (4-1): The visit to Stagg in Week 8 should be a victory. To make absolutely sure, the Porters also will want to beat at least one of Bolingbrook, Lincoln-Way West and Lincoln-Way East.

JOLIET – University of St. Francis junior Cam Knudsen, a Minooka graduate, has been selected as the NAIA National Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week.

Knudsen was the overall runner-up and top NAIA finisher at Augustana College’s Brissman-Lundeen Invitational Friday. Taking second among a field of 380 runners, he covered the 8K course in 25:11 to help lead USF to a second-place showing at the 21-team event. Knudsen, who earlier in the day received the third CCAC Athlete of the Week award of his career, claimed his first NAIA national certificate. Cubs reward Epstein with 5-year extension

CHICAGO – Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts had dinner with president of baseball operations Theo Epstein in Arizona around the start of spring training.

If Epstein had any doubt about a contract extension, it ended right there.

And on Wednesday, it became official.

The Cubs announced a five-year extension, rewarding Epstein for an overhaul that has the long-suffering franchise eyeing its first championship since 1908.

“He started it off by saying some really nice things about me that might have hurt his leverage a little bit, and then I returned the favor by telling him that even if we couldn’t work out a contract, it would get awkward because I would just keep showing up to work,” Epstein said. “As an employee, I will. I kept ruining my leverage.”

The deal comes with the Cubs wrapping up one of the greatest seasons in franchise history and their fans believing this just might be the team to end the 108-year World Series title drought.

The Cubs reached 100 wins for the first time since 1935 and are a major league-leading 101-57 after Wednesday’s game at Pittsburgh. The Cubs clinched the best record in the majors with more than a week left in the regular season.

Jaso hits for cycle as Pirates beat Cubs:

At Pittsburgh, John Jaso hit for the cycle and drove in five runs to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to an 8-4 victory over the Cubs on Wednesday night.

Jaso tripled off Cubs’ reliever Pedro Strop in the seventh inning to clinch the first cycle in the history of PNC Park and the first for the Pirates since 2004. Jaso’s final hit was a fly ball to center field. At first he hesitated rounding second base but went on and the throw from Albert Almora Jr. was up the third-base line.

Arrieta went five innings and allowed 10 hits and seven runs, both season highs.

The Cubs’ Anthony Rizzo hit a solo homer, his 32nd of the season.

Blackhawks lose to Penguins in exhibition: At Chicago, Chris Kunitz

scored two third-period goals in the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins’ 2-0 exhibition victory over the Hawks on Wednesday night.

Kunitz scored on a power play 2:31 into the third, and added his second 6:48 later. Tristan Jarry made 30 saves for Pittsburgh for the shutout.

The Hawks’ Scott Darling stopped 33 shots.

JOLIET – Gun control. Fracking. Child immigration.

These are some of the topics the Universalist Unitarian Church in Joliet addresses as part of its “First Thursday Social Justice Film Nights.”

“I think some of the films we show are not going to be seen in movie theaters nor are you likely to see them on television,” said Warren Thom, a church member who co-hosts the film nights.

This month’s film, “Jumbo Wild,” focuses on Jumbo Valley, one of only two areas in North America where grizzly bears can freely roam between Canada and the United States, and highlights the tension between the development and protecting the wilderness, according to a news release from the church.

The goal is to inform viewers, spur discussion and inspire grassroots activism, said Paul Brumbaugh, a member of the church who leads the film nights and the discussions that follow.

Individuals from the community, as well as members of faithbased and secular organizations, are welcome to attend and – hopefully – initiate change.

“People can’t become activists in all the areas we cover,” Brumbaugh said. “But they need to pick their own topic and get out there and be active and do something good for the world.”

Brumbaugh said last month’s film “Selma: The Bridge to the Ballot” is G-rated and appropriate for students in grades six through 12.

Brumbaugh said he contacted area schools to let them know the film is available to teachers to show for free in their classrooms.

The DVD ships in reasonable time from the distributor, Brumbaugh said.

“I got mine in about a week,” he added.

When Teeter moved away Brumbaugh and Thom decided to keep the series going.

“We felt it was a very valuable service to the congregation and to the community,” Brumbaugh said.

Brumbaugh said many of the films come through a distributor that offers about 5,000 titles, which helps keep the topics wide and varied.

“They’re actually seen from many different points of view, so we can try to understand the problem,” Thom said.

When Teeter hosted the event, he often drew in people from other organizations. Since then, attendance has dropped to 25. Brumbaugh would like to double it.

Still, those who do participate appear to enjoy them.

“Most of them come back,” Brumbaugh said.

Attendees have another advantage: Screening these documentaries provides an opportunity for people to decide it they want to their church or organization members to view them, too, Brumbaugh said.

For instance, Thom said a film shown earlier in 2016 made him aware of the large number of people – veterans especially – who use handguns to commit suicide. Thom now supports a waiting period before one can purchase a handgun.

“If people waited two or three days they could, with support from their families, try to deal with the problems their dealing with,” Thom said.

However, whether or not one agrees with the views purported in these films, the issues presented in them affect everyone, whether they want to face those issues or not.

Brumbaugh uses fracking as an example.

“We’ve got to get off fossil fuels or our grandchildren will be feeling the effects of global warming in a way that we would not want them to feel or experience,” Brumbaugh said. “And if not our grandchildren, then our great-grandchildren. I believe the scientists, at this point, are saying that in about 200 years, this planet will be inhabitable.”

33rd Channooka area CROP Hunger Walk set for Oct. 9

The Channooka Area CROP Hunger Walk has been offered for 33 years. Harold Breen of Morris, one of this year’s coordinators, has walked 31 of them.

But registration for the Oct. 9 walk, which kicks off from Resurrection Lutheran Church in Channahon, was a little for different for him this time.

“This is the first year I signed up on the internet,” Breen said. “I’m not a computer jock.”

According to the CROP Hunger Walk website, CROP Hunger Walks support the grassroots efforts of Church World Service to combat hunger around the world. It provides water, seeds, tools, wells and water systems, technical training and micro-enterprise loans.

own communities. Breen said last year’s walk raised a total of $5,425.

Twenty-five percent of that amount was divided between two food pantries, one in Channahon and one in Minooka, Breen said. He’s hoping more walkers will want to participate this year.

“We used to take in a lot more money,” Breen said. “We used to have eight churches. The walk used to be 6.2 miles. Now it’s 3.1 miles. We used to raise $11,000.”

Participants may register at any time, as long as registration is completed before Oct. 9. That’s because walkers receive pledge sheets at the time of registration. Pledge sheets and any money collected must be sub-

JOLIET – The Joliet Franciscan sisters are pleased to announce their 2016 honorees for the Mother Alfred Moes Award and the Joliet Franciscan Heritage Award which will be presented at their upcoming 27th Annual Franciscan Autumn Feast taking place 2 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Patrick C. Haley Mansion in Joliet.

Receiving the Mother Alfred Award will be Rev. Raymond Lescher and Daybreak Center.

Lescher, now retired, was the pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Joliet, a position he held for the past 17 years. He made many contributions to both the church and Joliet community at larg Daybreak Center opened its doors in 1992 and is run by Catholic Charities. It operates 24-hours a day, 365 days a year and provides emergency housing, and supportive services to individuals and families who are homeless. Daybreak helps feed over 120-200 people who come to the shelter for lunch every day.

The Joliet Heritage Award recipients are William and Joyce Ruhaak of Joliet. The Ruhaaks are known throughout the Diocese of Joliet for their work on peace and

justice issues as well as working to form social justice committees through the diocese.

In addition to the Channooka Area CROP Hunger Walk, Breen, an avid jogger who will be 78 in October, has also run up to 20 miles of a 66-mile fundraising event that benefits St. Jude Children Hospital.

With a new hip this year, Breen is good to go. Although he’s run marathons, he especially likes combining his love for running with helping others.

“It’s just something I like to do,” Breen said.

JOLIET – The Helping Hands Club of St. Mary Nativity Catholic School held a flip-flop drive for children in Djibouti, Africa.

This flip-flop drive was suggested by the pastor, Rev. Ron Neitzke, at a school Mass in which he related how the children of Djibouti have very little. Neitzke was stationed there for about a year as he served as chaplain.

The students in preschool through grade eight brought in these flip-flops for children in a village there. SPC Moreno of the Djibouti military base delivered the donation on behalf of the school students.

St. Mary Nativity received a certificate of recognition from the Illinois House of Representative General Assembly for the 86th District for the Helping Hands collection of flip-flops for the children in Djibouti, Africa.

32 Get potassium from foods, not supplements Dear Dr. K: I have high blood pressure.

Should I take a potassium supplement?

Dear Reader: This is a great question, but before I answer, let me take a step back to explain the connection between potassium and blood pressure.

Tens of thousands of years ago, our ancestors survived on wild animals and a variety of plant foods. This diet delivered plenty of potassium but scant sodium. Today, the average American diet contains about twice as much sodium as potassium, as a result of the high levels of salt in processed foods. This sodium-potassium imbalance is thought to be a major contributor to high blood pressure.

Now, back to your question. The short answer is no, you should not take potassium supplements unless your doctor prescribes them. People on blood pressure medications, in particular, need to be careful about potassium supplements.

Many blood pressure medications can lower your potassium level. Very low potassium can lead to dangerous heart rhythms.

Many commonly prescribed diuretics lower potassium levels. If you are taking potassium-lowering diuretics, your doctor will check the level of potassium in your blood. If it is low, the doctor may prescribe potassium supplements.

But other types of diuretics and other commonly prescribed blood pressure medicines can raise potassium levels. Examples of such drugs are the diuretic called spironolactone, the drugs called ACE inhibitors and drugs called angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs). Common painkillers such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve) can raise potassium levels. Abnormally high potassium levels also can cause dangerous heart rhythms.

If you are taking any medicines known to either raise or lower your potassium to dangerous levels, your doctor periodically

Keeping that level in the correct range is important. This mineral plays a key role in the function of nerves and muscles, including heart muscle.

Your kidneys help regulate potassium levels in your blood. They tend to keep your potassium level from going abnormally high or low. But age and medical conditions may impair kidney function.

The FDA limits over-the-counter potassium supplements to less than 100 milligrams. However, grocery stores carry salt substitutes that may contain much higher amounts of potassium. People trying to curb their sodium intake may use salt substitutes.

That’s a bad idea if you take a blood pressure medicine that tends to raise potassium levels.

Your best bet is to get your potassium from foods instead of pills. Many fruits and vegetables are rich in potassium. Spinach, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, bananas and avocado all are good sources. Potassium-rich diets help control blood pressure and also lower your risk of stroke.

Another connection between potassium and high blood pressure is a rare condition of the adrenal glands that can cause both high blood pressure and very low blood potassium levels.

So if you have high blood pressure, ask your doctor what your potassium level is. If the doctor hasn’t checked your potassium, gently suggest it might be a good idea.

Dear Abby: My DEAR ABBY husband recently disclosed to me Jeanne he was sexually Phillips abused by his cousin, who is the same age, when he was in high school. She blackmailed him by threatening to tell everyone he had raped her. She used this power over him to coax sexual favors but never intercourse.

After a year of looking for help, he confided in his mother, but she ended up getting drunk and telling the whole family about the situation.

Luckily, he was able to convince most of them it was “just the alcohol talking.” At that point, his cousin finally found a boyfriend and stopped blackmailing him.

This all happened five years ago. He hasn’t lived in the same state as his mom or the abuser in three years. I can tell by confiding in me he feels much better, but I’m worried he blames himself for his mother’s alcoholism and his ruined relationships with his close friends in high school. – Concerned Spouse Dear Concerned Spouse: Encourage your husband to talk to a licensed psychotherapist about what was done to him. Victims sometimes blame themselves. I seriously doubt his mother’s alcohol abuse had anything to do with him. That she betrayed his confidence instead of helping him was terrible. A therapist can explain all this to him, and help him to see things clearly so he can decide how to proceed.
