Indian Burial Mounds – Channahon/Joliet Paleoindians are the first known people who lived in the Americas, including Illinois. These individuals lived here during the end of the last glacial advance, or ice age. These ancient Americans occupied the area now known as Illinois some 12,000 years ago, and lasted until about 10,000 years ago.

These first Americans probably lived in small groups of related individuals who moved around a lot, hunting large game animals, including some now extinct, such as Mammoths and Mastodons, both large elephant-like creatures. They also relied upon foraging for wild plants and ground seeds to eat for their survival.

Ceremonial centers built by American Indians from about 2,200 to 1,600 years ago existed in what is now Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan, as well as elsewhere within the Mississippi watershed.

The people who built these centers, known as Woodland people, had previously lived more simply as hunters and fisherman and some had begun to domesticate native plants that provided a more reliable food supply.

As this group of Americans became less nomadic and more sedentary, they began to develop more structured social systems. From their home villages, they traveled the waterways and established trade routes. In time, some communities had begun to make pottery and to bury their dead in or under conical mounds made of earth.

Then, a new religion swept through the region, attracting followers who built ceremonial centers along rivers and lakes.

The settlements of these believers were oriented to mounds and earthworks, that is, ceremonial centers that were constructed several miles apart along waterways, including the Illinois River.

About 1,600 years ago, communities located throughout the Mississippi River watershed began to lose interest in the ceremonial centers and focused instead on local rituals. They built only small burial

This group of people, known as Mississippian people, had complex social structures and full-scale farming of corn, squash and bean crops.

Around a thousand years ago, in what is now southwest Illinois, a city now called “Cahokia” was built over the top of the razed remains of an earlier village. This city, which had a trade network that connected nearly one-third of the continent, flourished for the next 250 years.

Cahokia was the largest and most influential urban settlement of the Mississippian culture in North America. Cahokia is best known for Monks Mound, which is the largest man-made earthen mound structure in North America.

While the Mississippian tradition is best represented by the site at Cahokia, there still are thousands of mounds and earthworks that dot the landscape in North America. Today, several of these ceremonial structures still can be found in Will County.

The best preserved of these earthworks are the two Briscoe burial mounds located in Channahon. Constructed approximately 1000 to 1200 A.D., these mounds occupy a prominent overlook on the north

side of the Des Plaines River just west of Interstate 55. While the larger of the two mounds has never been excavated, the smaller mound was investigated by archaeologist in the late 1920s.

In Joliet, the Oakwood Mound, located in Oakwood Cemetery, is a low, broad burial mound that has been partially excavated. It represents the same type of burial mound as smaller of the two Briscoe mounds.

Local archaeologist George Langford and a group of students from the University of Chicago excavated the mound in July 1928.

The group uncovered the skeletons of at least one hundred people from a trench that was cut through the mound.

Joliet also is home to an irregularly shaped earthen embankment located in a city of Joliet park on east Francis Road.

Known as the Higginbotham Woods Earthwork, the four small mounds probably belong to the Hopewellian Period, when earthworks of similar design were created up and down the Illinois River.

It is believed that the earthworks were constructed sometime between 200 B.C. and 800 A.D. Little has been uncovered by archaeologist at this early site.

Dog house building competition celebrates five years of Habitat ReStore

Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – Andi Armitage stood in the hot September sun Saturday with co-workers Kimberly Steele and Adriana Prokuski and painted strips of wood bright green, yellow and purple. Armitage’s team had a mission to build a dog house – but she wanted something whimsical and colorful that would stand out.

So Armitage and the Joliet Police Department Records Department created a Dr. Seuss-inspired dog house, with offset doors and windows and a crooked chimney, all to support the Will County Habitat for Humanity ReStore fifth anniversary fundraiser Homes for Hounds.

“I love animals, and everyone in our office has a special place in their heart for animals, so we wanted to give back to this community with this event,” Armitage said.

The Records Department was one of 13 teams from area businesses, churches, schools, nonprofits, civic groups and police and fire departments that set up shop Saturday in the parking lot of the Habitat for Humanity store ReStore at 200 S. Larkin Ave. in Joliet to build a unique dog house to be auctioned off for charity.

ReStore manager Heidi Serena said she wanted to celebrate the anniversary with a unique fundraiser.

“I also wanted to raise awareness for ReStore,” Serena said. “We did dog houses because we couldn’t build a home, like we do with Habitat, in the parking lot. This was the right size of project.”

The three groups the fundraiser supported were K9’s for Veteran Warriors, PAWS of Tinley and Habitat for Humanity in order to support its mission of “a world where everyone deserves a decent place to live,” Serena said.

Each group was given the wood beforehand and allowed to cut and prime the wood, but had to construct the house on-site. Houses ranged from small – for those tiny furry friends – to deluxe – with patios, hardwood floors or stone fronts. Each included intricate details that made each home unique to its builder.

Proposed water act would help Will County

15 passed, with a 95-3 vote, the Water Resources Development Act of 2016.

The comprehensive multiyear plan would fund projects to help Illinois, the Great Lakes region and the nation mitigate flood hazards, as well as prepare for and respond to weather emergencies. The WRDA also makes substantial investments in the nation’s water infrastructure system in an effort to ensure clean drinking water.

Locally, the bill would save the Forest Preserve District of Will County up to $320,000 by resolving a costshare dispute between the district and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers about a 14-year-old project in which the Army Corps retroactively billed the district for work it was not required to pay for.

The district wasn’t informed until 2014 of these cost-sharing policy changes made by the Army Corps

in 2006 and 2013. Throughout the 12 years, the study moved in fits and starts for reasons the district isn’t exactly sure of, chief operational officer Ralph Schultz said.

The district approached U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs, and U.S. Sens. Mark Kirk, R-Ill, and Dick Durbin, D-Ill, and asked them to work on the district’s behalf in Washington.

The study is now complete, and outlines a project that would protect endangered species in Lockport Prairie Nature Preserve by repairing erosion problems near the bordering Route 53 and removing invasive plants, trees and shrubs. Coinciding with this is the more long-term Prairie Bluff Preserve restoration, which will convert a former farm field into a prairie.

It’s not a guarantee the project will go to bid next spring.

The new federal fiscal year begins Saturday, and the U.S. House still has to vote on its own WRDA proposal.

The two proposals vary significantly, but Schultz said what typically happens is the two meet somewhere in the middle before submitting a joint act to the president for approval.

According to published reports, however, passage of a WRDA could be delayed as Congress returns home in October to campaign for re-election.

Whether WRDA will be a priority after election day and into December is unknown. Water and wildlife advocacy groups are pushing for WRDA passage before the end of the year.

Based on news releases from Kirk and Durbin, the U.S. Senate’s proposed WRDA 2016, among other measures, would: • Expedite construction of the McCook Reservoir and provide federal funding through completion. The McCook Reservoir is a 10-billion-gallon reservoir designed to redirect flood and wastewater from the Chicago region. When completed, the project will benefit Chicago and 36 surrounding suburbs, including 1.5 million

structures and more than 5 million people.

• Authorize a final feasibility study on Phase II of the Des Plaines River Project, which includes flood risk management and environmental restoration on the Upper Des Plaines River and tributaries in Illinois and Wisconsin. The $310 million project includes $10 million in flood reduction benefits and restores more than 6,800 acres of land.

• Authorize grants up to $1.4 billion over five years to help small and disadvantaged communities comply with the Safe Drinking Water Act. The bill authorizes up to $300 million over five years for communities to replace lead service lines, $100 million for schools to test for lead and $50 million annually for innovative water technology grants.

• The bill provides $220M in direct emergency assistance to address the drinking water contamination in Flint, Michigan, and other communities facing similar emergencies.

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – People are concerned about the quality of the water they consume, according to a new survey from Culligan International.

Through its national “Truth About Water” survey and campaign, Culligan was able to learn more about consumers’ concerns and awareness of water safety issues.

About a quarter of respondents do not believe their tap water is completely safe to use for cooking, bathing or consuming. Additionally, 75 percent of respondents believe water safety is a growing concern in North America, yet 73 percent have never had their water tested for impurities.

Rick Cook, manager of industry and regulatory affairs for Culligan, echoed the Will County Health Department’s recommendation that residents, especially those with wells, should have their water tested annually. He said consumers should make sure faucets and other equipment is certified by organizations such as the Water Quality Association.

Cook said federal bills, such as the proposed Water Resources Development Act of 2016, help ensure water is protected into the future, with both regulations for agencies to follow and

One of the key points of the U.S. Senate proposal is to address lead-contaminated water in Flint, Michigan.

Cities are required by the Environmental Protection Agency to test for

lead. Joliet’s water department spends $100,000 a year to prevent lead in old pipes from getting into the water.

The city also samples water from at least 50 homes every three years to look for signs of lead or copper in

the water. The city takes water samples from another 120 locations every month to check for bacteria.

Cook referenced Joliet’s struggle years ago to meet regulations on radium levels in water. Radium is a naturally occurring radioactive metal found in some water supplies, including the deep aquifer from which Joliet and some other communities in northern Illinois get their water. It has been linked to cancer.

According to previous Herald-News reporting, in the decade before 2010, Joliet invested $54.5 million in 10 treatment plants to remove radium from water drawn from deep wells before it is consumed. The EPA had mandated municipalities to lower radium levels in their water.

It’s important to note that each community’s water is different, and Culligan isn’t telling people their local water isn’t safe, Cook stressed.

The campaign is just to let consumers know that water should be tested to ensure it is safe and healthy to consume.

Cook said if people are concerned about their water, the best choice is to have it tested by a certified lab. The results will dictate what products can be used in your home to take care of the issues before consumption, or if contacting your local water provider is necessary.

Channahon Public Works Director Ed Dolezal said his department has identified 3,000 ash trees in Channahon parkways and village properties that they are keeping an eye on for damage from the emerald ash borer.

This year alone, they’ve cut down more than 400 trees; last year, 280.

I can identify at least another dozen in my subdivision that will need to come down.

This brings back a not-so-happy memory of the majestic elm tree that grew in our front yard in the south end of Bay City, Michigan, where I lived as a kid. I loved that tree – it shaded our yard and home, and provided a great climbing structure for all of us in the neighborhood.

We have six ash trees in my yard, so my husband and I had our trees treated starting a few years ago when the emerald ash borer problem first came to light. Only one, the one in the parkway, has signs of damage, but it is recovering, said Keith Tulk, owner of Botanical Health Care.

Some ash trees can still be treated, Tulk said, if they are in an area out in the country that doesn’t have much of an infestation problem. Those surrounded by infested trees – in subdivisions, for instance – wouldn’t be good candidates for being treated.

The white ash has shown more signs of resistance than the more-common green ash. I have three of the white ash in my yard.

Many towns are offering help with replacing trees. Channahon and Shorewood, for instance, have a replacement program where they will pay 50 percent of a new parkway tree up to a specified cost. You have to choose from a list of acceptable trees, which in part increases diversity and reduces the likelihood of this happening again.

Because funds are limited, you will likely be on a waiting list.

When it comes time to choose a tree for the parkway, Tulk recommends considering several things. Ease of cleanup tops the list. You don’t want a tree that’s going to drop a lot of debris onto your lawn all summer. Fruit-bearing trees attract bees, which can be a safety hazard to children and adults.

Growth rate is important, because trees that grow quickly tend to be more brittle, creating lots of broken branches around the yard.

Look at trees that can be nicely pruned so they are at least 13 feet above the ground or else garbage trucks and

Tulk recommends trees that have a good spreading crown, not too dense, seedless and light leaves that are easy to clean up.

Tana Anderson made everyone feel special

CREST HILL – Tana Anderson loved working with hair.

But that isn’t the main reason she became a beautician. Her daughter, Kara Anderson of Joliet, said her mother loved helping people and making them feel special, without regard to anyone’s social or economic status.

Tana loved her clients as she loved her family and friends. She wanted everyone to be the best they could be, Kara said.

“She would do people’s hair for free or at a discounted rate because that is what made her happy,” Kara said in an email.

For many years, it was just Tana and Kara as Tana raised her only daughter as a single mother. By age 10, Kara was answering the phones at Tanna’s Hair Studio in Crest Hill, where five other beauticians rented chair space from Tana.

Kara said her mother’s caring heart made her business successful.

“She had over 350 clients when she retired in 2011,” Kara said. “I’d meet

people in the most random places and they’d say, ‘Oh, you’re Tana’s daughter. She cut my hair.’ ” Tana changed the decorations at her studio to reflect holidays, and Kara would help hang up Christmas lights. Tana always held a Christmas party and made sure everyone had a good time. Her business meant as much as family to her – and her family was everything.

She handled problems with ease and never let anyone or any situation upset her, Kara said. People, even Kara’s friends while growing up, always felt comfortable with Tana because she never judged people.

“God was a big part of her life,” Kara said. “And she knew God wanted her to be nice and accepting of everyone.”

But by the time Kara graduated high school in 2006, she knew something was wrong with her mother.

Tana had started falling for no apparent reason. Then she had trouble walking. So Tana sold the salon in 2007 and began working from home.

In 2008, Tana was diagnosed with a progressive neurodegenerative

disease – amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, more commonly known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease.

But Tana continued seeing clients in her home, even after she needed a cane, then a walker and then a motor scooter. She simply leaned on the cabinet behind the client’s chair for balance.

“Her arms worked just fine,” Tana said. “She was a fighter. She did not

couldn’t believe something so horrible could happen to someone so good.

“She lost the ability to use her arms and then her hands,” Kara said.

“She lost the ability to take herself to the bathroom and get out of bed.”

Knowing money was tight and that Tana had a huge support system in the Crest Hill area, Kara accepted the ice bucket challenge in 2014 and started a Go Fund Me account for her mother.

“I raised $10,000 for her,” Kara said.

Tana died April 23 at age 56. At the end of Tana’s life, she refused feeding and breathing tubes, along with pain medication, because she wished to be united to God’s will.

“She couldn’t even talk in the last week. She would only shake her head, ‘No,’ ” Kara said. “She felt, ‘I have to be strong because God was strong for me.’ It is truly an inspiration for me.”

OBITUARIES MICHAEL KORCHYNSKY JR.

DAVID VIVI LARA

Michael Korchynsky Jr., 62, of Minooka, died on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016, at home after a long and valiant battle against cancer.

Michael was born in Niagara Falls, New York, on July 18, 1954 and raised in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Bethel Park High School in 1972. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University (West Lafayette, Indiana) in 1977, he joined Commonweath Edison, now an Exelon company. He held various positions at Exelon throughout his almost 40-year career at the energy concern, including nuclear duty officer, and was most recently promoted to executive assistant to the president and chief nuclear officer of Exelon Nuclear.

He is survived by his sisters, Roksana Korchynsky (Pittsburgh) and Marina (Manfred Morari) Korchynsky Morari (Zurich, Switzerland); nephews, Manfred J. Morari and Michael F. Morari (Zurich, Switzerland); cousins, Mary Efremov (New York, New York) and sons, Lydia Lukianovich Melnyk (Philadelphia) and Paul Lukianovich (Medford, New Jersey) and families. Michael was the beloved friend of Regina Corban and her family, whose companionship he treasured, and an inspiring colleague to many at Exelon Corporation where he worked for 39 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Taisija Korchynsky (deceased March 11, 2005) and Michael Korchynsky (deceased Aug. 5, 2010) of Pittsburgh, to whom he was a devoted and loving son.

Family and friends will be received on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2016, from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2016, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Fred C. Vivi took pride in all of the accomplishments of his nieces, nephews, and their children.

She was the best potica and strudel maker. She was known for her wonderful sense of humor and quick wit. Her friends knew her as “Sunshine.” She loved to make others laugh and smile. Her smile will be greatly missed.

Police believe the two shootings in the eastern Illinois city of Champaign might be related. They said the first apparently stemmed from an argument shortly after midnight at an apartment party on Green Street, the commercial heart of the campus.

“Our preliminary investigation completely points to an argument taking place at the party and the argument spilled out into the street, and that’s when a fight occurred,” Champaign police spokeswoman LaEisha Meaderds said, adding that the reasons for the fight aren’t clear yet.

Shots were fired as the fight escalated, striking four people, she said.

One of those shot, 22-year-old George Korchev, was killed, Meaderds said.

She said Korchev, who was from Mun-

Police said the shooting occurred late Saturday and stemmed from altercation between the man being questioned and victim. The victim, who had not been identified, was taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Police said the 54-year-old man was walking with two women when he got into a verbal argument with another person.

Less than half an hour later, police received a report of another shooting a few blocks west of campus. Officers found a victim, who was taken to a hospital and treated for a non-critical wound.

Police were searching for a suspect or suspects in the shootings and for the driver of a vehicle that struck someone who was running away from the gunfire at the first scene. That person’s injuries were minor.

It isn’t clear how many people were at the party because many ran when the gunfire began, Meaderds said. Police are hoping to find and speak to as many as possible.

Champaign Mayor Deborah Frank Feinen said in a statement Sunday that city and university police were working together to aggressively pursue all leads.

Mall shooting suspect: ‘Creepy,’ multiple arrests, disputes

OAK HARBOR, Wash. – The 20-year-old man suspected of killing five people with a rifle at a Macy’s makeup counter had a string of run-ins with the law in recent years, including charges he assaulted his stepfather, and was described by a neighbor as so “creepy, rude and obnoxious” that she kept a Taser by her front door.

As investigators tried to piece together information on Arcan Cetin, who was arrested Saturday evening after a nearly 24-hour manhunt, a picture emerged of a troubled young man. Court records show more than a half-dozen criminal cases in Island County alone since 2013.

Authorities said the gunman in the attack at the Cascade Mall Arcan Cetin in Burlington opened fire in the department store’s cosmetics department Friday night, killing a man and four females ranging from a teenager to a senior citizen. The killer then fled.

Cetin said nothing and appeared “zombie-like” when he was taken into custody on a sidewalk outside his apartment complex some 30 miles away in Oak Harbor by a sheriff’s officer who recognized him as the suspect in the rampage, authorities said.

Cetin immigrated to the U.S. from Turkey and is a legal permanent resident, officials said.

As the surrounding area absorbed news of the arrest, critical questions remained, including the gunman’s motive. The FBI said early Saturday that there was no indication the

shooting was terrorism, but local authorities said later in the day that they were ruling nothing out.

On Sept. 17, a 20-year-old man stabbed 10 people at a Minnesota mall before being shot to death by an off-duty police officer. Authorities said they are investigating the attack by Dahir Ahmed Adan as a possible act of terrorism.

On Sunday, investigators searched Cetin’s vehicle and the apartment complex and were seen carrying boxes from a rear, upstairs unit.

The four-unit building was surrounded with yellow police tape. Detectives would not say what they found.

Amber Cathey, 21, lived in an apartment next to Cetin for the past three months and said she was so frightened by him that she complained to apartment management and kept a stun gun handy. Cathey said she blocked him on Snapchat after he sent her a photo of his crotch.

“He was really creepy, rude and obnoxious,” Cathey said. She said she would try to avoid him by walking the long way around to her apartment if she saw his car in the parking lot.

The two were in high school together as well, and Cathey said he acted the same way then.

The Seattle Times reported that court records show Cetin faced three charges of assaulting his stepfather. The newspaper said Cetin also was arrested on drunken driving charges. It gave no details on when the arrests took place or how the cases may have been resolved. In the assault case, Cetin was told by a judge last December that he was not to possess a gun, the newspaper reported. However, the stepfather urged the judge not to impose a no-contact order, saying his stepson was “going through a hard time.”

Poll shows voter distaste for Putin-style leadership

By EMILY SWANSON and VIVIAN SALAMA The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Donald Trump has called Russian President Vladimir Putin “a leader – unlike what we have in this country.”

But most Americans don’t agree with Trump’s assessment of Putin’s leadership skills, a new Associated Press-GfK poll shows.

Only 24 percent of registered voters say Putin has leadership qualities that would be good for an American president to share, while 71 percent say he does not. In fact, a majority, 56 percent, said they have an unfavorable view of Putin, while only 10 percent said they view the Russian leader favorably.

Voters were split on whether Trump would be too close to Putin, with 42 percent saying they think Trump would be too close, and 41 percent saying his approach would be about right. Fourteen percent think he would not be close enough.

By comparison, most voters (53 percent) think Democrat Hillary Clinton’s relationship with Putin would be about right, while 11 percent think she would be too close and 32 percent think she would not be close enough.

The relationship between the Republican nominee and the Russian strongman began taking on new life when Putin praised Trump last December as “bright and talented” and “the absolute leader of the presidential race.”

The billionaire businessman hailed Putin’s regard for him as a “great honor,” brushing off widespread allegations that the Russian president has ordered the killing of political dissidents and journalists.

“Our country does plenty of killing also,” Trump told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” in December.

Four in 10 Trump supporters and only 1 in 10 Hillary Clinton supporters say Putin has leadership qualities that would be good for an American president to have. Still, even among Trump’s supporters, just 16 percent have a favorable opinion of Putin.

Only 5 percent of Clinton’s supporters do.

Marissa Garth, a 28-year-old stayat-home mom from Smithfield, Utah, said she plans to vote for Trump this November because he exhibits the qualities of a strong leader – not to be compared with Putin.

“I think (Putin) is a strong leader for his country,” she said. “But at the same time I don’t think he necessarily has the qualities that I would want as a president.”

In fact, the poll finds that men are more likely than women to say that Putin has leadership qualities that

year olds and only a third of those under 30 say the same.

Generally speaking, voters are more likely to say they trust Clinton than Trump on negotiating with Russia, 40 percent to 33 percent. Nineteen percent say they trust neither and 7 percent trust both equally.

John Eppenger, 68, a retiree in Fairfield, Ala., said that when it comes to dealing with Russia, Clinton would “do a much better job than Trump. She’s not perfect, she’s not ideal, but she’s better.”

Among Clinton’s supporters, 69 percent say Trump would be too close to Putin. Forty-nine percent of those supporting another candidate share that view, but only 8 percent of Trump supporters say their candidate would be too close to Putin. Eighty percent of Trump supporters say his approach would be about right. Among conservatives, 20 percent say Trump would be too close to Putin.

There is nothing 54-year old Gary Sellers, of Homewood, Illinois, likes about Putin – or Trump. He called Putin a “dictator,” adding, “there are no qualities of his that I wish that an American president would have.”

A lukewarm Clinton supporter, he’s concerned that Trump shares Putin’s extreme views of governing.

“I feel he has a dictatorial approach toward being president of the United States,” Sellers said of Trump.

Forty-seven percent of voters say they approve and 52 percent disapprove of President Barack Obama’s handling of the U.S. relationship with Russia.

Voters are divided over whether the next president should take a tougher approach to Putin (42 percent) or whether the current approach is about right (39 percent). Just 16 percent think the next president should take a friendlier approach.

Almost half of voters (48 percent) say the U.S. relationship with Russia is a very or extremely important issue, ranking it low on Americans’ list of priorities, far below issues like the economy (92 percent), the threat posed by the Islamic State group (70 percent), the U.S. role in world affairs more generally (68 percent) and im-

Elliott had his first 100-yard game for Dallas, finishing with 140 yards on 30 carries and a 14-yard run when he hurdled safety Chris Prosinski.

It didn’t even bother Prescott that Pro Bowl left tackle Tyron Smith missed just the second game of his sixyear career after his back tightened up during the week.

Prescott was 19 of 24 for 248 yards in Dallas’ first home win since last year’s opener, which was a week before the first of two broken left collarbones that kept Romo out of 12 games last season.

Romo is expected to miss about another month after breaking a bone in his back in the preseason.

Prescott had one of three rushing

touchdowns for the Cowboys, who have seven this season after getting eight all of last year, when they finished 4-12.

Because the Bears fell behind again, they couldn’t do much with the running game. They had just 15 carries for 73 yards and lost leading rusher Jeremy Langford to an ankle injury in the second half.

Injuries, ineffectiveness show in miserable 1st half

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com ARLINGTON, Texas – Undermanned and overmatched, the Bears were out of sorts from the get-go in their 31-17 loss to the Cowboys on Sunday night, falling to 0-3 for the second year in a row.

An ineffective defense and an offense that can’t sustain drives form a bad combination in any game, let alone one with the starting quarterback, nose tackle and inside linebacker out with injuries.

Without Jay Cutler, Eddie Goldman and Danny Trevathan, the problems that have plagued the Bears after halftime in their first two losses were apparent to open the game in a miserable first half on national TV. The Cowboys dominated from the

start, possessing the ball for 13:44 longer than the Bears in the opening half and scoring on all four possessions, jumping out to a 24-3 halftime lead.

Rookie Dak Prescott completed 19 of 24 passes in the game, finding open receivers often and also making plays with his legs. A vaunted Cowboys O-line had little problem with an undermanned Bears front seven that notched only one QB hit and one tackle for loss in the game.

The Bears’ offense didn’t convert a third down until the fourth quarter, going 2 for 10 on the night.

Unlike the first two weeks of the season, the Bears did look good in the third quarter – although it was hard to be worse than how things started.

They put up points in the third for the first time this season on a Brian Hoyer to Zach Miller touchdown.

It could have been closer, however, had the offense taken advantage of two other stops by the defense, but a Cameron Meredith lost fumble and a screen on third down that was well short of the sticks were empty possessions. Instead, they failed to capitalize, and Prescott’s touchdown pass to Dez Bryant sealed the Bears’ fate.

Bears injuries: Running back Jeremy Langford left the game on a cart in the third quarter with an ankle injury and did not return. … Starting safety Harold Jones-Quartey left the game after suffering a concussion in the second quarter. … Ka’Deem Carey (hamstring) and Eddie Goldman (ankle) did not travel with the team. …

Kyle Fuller (knee) was inactive for the third week in a row. … Bryce Callahan (concussion) was inactive.

Rookies get first action: Fourth-

round picks Deon Bush and Nick Kwiatkoski and undrafted rookie Cre’Von LeBlanc made their NFL debuts Sunday night. Kwiatkoski started in place of Trevathan, and LeBlanc was the Bears’ nickel corner in place of Callahan. Kwiatkoski gave way to Jonathan Anderson in the base defense in the second half, however. Both Kwiatkoski and LeBlanc had one tackle in their NFL debuts. Bush played on special teams.

Quick Hits: Rookie Jordan Howard had the team’s longest run of the season, going for 36 yards and leading to Connor Barth’s first field goal as a Bear. ... Matt Barkley and running back Raheem Mostert, who were promoted from the practice squad this week, were active, Barkley as the backup QB, and Mostert played Carey’s role on special teams.

ARLINGTON, Texas – Dak Prescott led scoring drives on all four Dallas possessions in the first half before throwing his first career touchdown pass, and the Cowboys beat the Bears, 31-17, on Sunday night to snap an eight-game home losing streak.

With his second straight win, Prescott doubled the number of victories the Cowboys (2-1) had in 14 games without injured quarterback Tony Romo over three seasons before the rookie fourth-round pick showed up.

Prescott’s first TD pass was a 17-yarder to Dez Bryant for a 31-10 lead in the fourth quarter, and he’s up to 99 throws without an interception to start his career. Philadelphia rookie Carson Wentz has 102, and those are the two highest career-opening totals in NFL history.

Brian Hoyer had trouble moving the Bears offense early with Jay Cutler sidelined by a sprained right thumb as the Bears fell behind, 24-3, at halftime and dropped to 0-3 for the second time in two seasons under coach John Fox. Making his 27th career start for his fourth different team, Hoyer was 30 of 49 for 317 yards – a good portion of that with the game out of each late in the fourth quarter – and threw for two scores to Zach Miller.

Offense hums for Packers The ASSOCIATED PRESS

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Aaron Rodgers threw for 205 yards and four touchdowns, including two in the first half to Jordy Nelson, and Green Bay snapped out of its offensive funk Sunday before holding off Detroit, 34-27.

Rodgers was 15 of 24, leading the Packers to touchdowns on their first three series. Nelson had 101 yards on six catches, returning to the form that made him one of the NFL’s best receivers before missing the 2015 season with a knee injury.

The Packers (2-1) led 31-10 at the half before the Lions slowly chipped away.

Marvin Jones’ 35-yard touchdown catch with 3:34 left got Detroit (1-2) within seven. Jones had a career-high 205 yards on six receptions.

Matthew Stafford passed for 385 yards and three scores for the Lions, who held advantages in total yardage (418-324) and time of possession, holding the ball for 35 minutes.

Vikings 22, Panthers 10: Sam Bradford threw a touchdown pass to Kyle Rudolph, Marcus Sherels returned a punt for a score and Minnesota snapped Carolina’s 14-game home winning streak.

The Vikings (3-0) put the clamps on Cam Newton, intercepting the league’s reigning MVP three times and sacking him eight times, one of those resulting in a safety by Danielle Hunter.

The eight sacks were the second-most ever against Newton.

The Panthers (1-2) had come in averaging 42 points per game in their past three home games, but could do little after bolting to a 10-0 lead. The Vikings held Carolina receivers Kelvin Benjamin and Devin Funchess without a catch.

Bradford improved to 2-0 as the Vikings starter, completing 18 of 28 passes for 171 yards. With Adrian Peterson injured, Matt Asiata and Jerick McKinnon combined for 70 yards rushing on 22 carries. Rudolph had seven catches for 70 yards, including a 15-yard TD catch to put the Vikings ahead for good in the early in the third quarter.

Broncos 29, Bengals 17: Trevor Siemian threw a career-high four touchdown passes in his first road start and was nearly perfect under fourth-quarter pressure, rallying Denver over Cincinnati.

Seahawks 37, 49ers 18: Russell Wilson threw for 243 yards and a touchdown before suffering a left knee injury and Seattle rolled to a rout of San Francisco.

Colts 26, Chargers 22: Andrew Luck shook off a sore throwing shoulder, then watched T.Y. Hilton break a tackle on a 63-yard touchdown pass with 1:17 to play, giving Indianapolis a victory over San Diego.

It’s the second time this season Luck has produced a late score to give Indy a lead in the waning seconds.

Redskins 29, Giants 27: Dustin Hopkins kicked a 37-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter for his fifth of the game and Washington Redskins avoid a near-disastrous 0-3 start with a win over the penalty-and error-prone New York.

Kirk Cousins threw touchdown passes of 44 yards to DeSean Jackson and 55 to Jamison Crowder as the banged-up Redskins (1-2) handed new coach Ben McAdoo his first loss with the Giants (2-1).

Rams 37, Buccaneers 32: Case Keenum threw for the Rams’ first touchdown since relocating back to Los Angeles, and Todd Gurley rushed for two more scores in a victory over Tampa Bay. The Rams (2-1), who did not get into the end zone in the first two games of

the season, also scored on Ethan Westbrooks’ 77-yard fumble return and Tavon Austin’s 43-yard reception in the fourth quarter before thunder and lightning caused a 69-minute weather delay with two minutes remaining.

Chiefs 24, Jets 3: Kansas City Chiefs returned two turnovers for touchdowns, intercepted three passes in the end zone and forced eight turnovers total in a victory over New York.

Marcus Peters had two of the picks for the Chiefs (2-1), including the first of four off the Jets’ Ryan Fitzpatrick in the fourth quarter. Daniel Sorenson had another, Derrick Johnson returned his 55 yards for a touchdown, and D.J. White snagged his in the end zone with 1:54 left in the game.

Ravens 19, Jaguars 17: Justin Tucker kicked a 54-yard field goal with 1:02 remaining, lifting Baltimore over Jacksonville.

Bills 33, Cardinals 18: LeSean McCoy scored twice and safety Aaron Williams returned a botched field-goal snap 53 yards for a touchdown in leading Buffalo over Arizona.

Raiders 17, Titans 10: Derek Carr threw for 249 yards and a touchdown, and Oakland beat Tennessee with its defense finally coming up with some big plays.

The Raiders (2-1) forced three turnovers and had a sack after coming into this game having given up more yards than any team since at least 1940 through the first two games.

Dolphins 30, Browns 24, OT: Jay Ajayi scored on an 11-yard run with 8:26 left in overtime, and Miami escaped with a win over Cleveland.

Arnold Palmer brought a country club sport to the masses with a hard-charging style, charisma and a commoner’s touch. At ease with both presidents and the golfing public, and on a first-name basis with both, “The King” died Sunday in Pittsburgh. He was 87.

Alastair Johnston, CEO of Arnold Palmer Enterprises, confirmed that Palmer died Sunday afternoon of complications from heart problems.

Johnston said Palmer was admitted to the UPMC Hospital on Thursday for some cardiovascular work and weakened over the last few days.

“Today marks the passing of an era,” said Johnston, Palmer’s longtime agent at IMG. “Arnold Palmer’s influence, profile and achievements spread far beyond the game of golf. He was an iconic American who treated people with respect and warmth, and built a unique legacy through his ability to engage with fans.”

Palmer ranked among the most important figures in golf history, and it went well beyond his seven major championships and 62 PGA Tour wins. His good looks, devilish grin and go-for-broke manner made the elite sport appealing to one and all. And it helped that he arrived about the same time as television moved into most households, a perfect fit that sent golf to unprecedented popularity.

“If it wasn’t for Arnold, golf wouldn’t be as popular as it is now,” Tiger Woods said in 2004 when Palmer played in his last Masters. “He’s the one who basically brought it to the forefront on TV. If it wasn’t for him and his excitement, his flair, the way he played, golf probably would not have had that type of excitement.

“And that’s why he’s the king.”

Beyond his golf, Palmer was a pioneer in sports marketing, paving the way for scores of other athletes to reap in millions from endorsements.

Some four decades after his last PGA Tour win, he ranked among the highest-earners in golf.

“Thanks Arnold for your friendship, counsel and a lot of laughs,” Woods tweeted Sunday night. “Your philanthropy and humility are part of your legend. It’s hard to imagine golf without you or anyone more important to the game than the King.”

The Tigers’ stands were filled for the homecoming game, and the large crowd exited with the feeling this team can be a factor the rest of the way. Next up is Saturday’s battle with Plainfield Central in the Wildcats’ traditional homecoming game.

Central has not won yet under firstyear coach Jon Pereiro, but anyone who has seen the Wildcats the last few weeks knows they are getting close. The Tigers will not be taking anything for granted.

Football fever switched Saturday to Memorial Stadium for the Robert Morris-USF game. The 5-foot-6, 160-pound Rogers served notice what he might be up to on this day when he returned the opening kickoff 71 yards to the Saints’ 29-yard line, setting up the Eagles’ first touchdown.

Considering what would transpire the rest of the day, it was noteworthy that USF wide receiver Brandon Ruffin made the saving tackle on Rogers’ long return.

Rogers finished rushing for 222 yards on 43 carries (with no fumbles) and two touchdowns, and returned two kickoffs for 94 yards. He carried 12 times in a late 13-play drive that effectively sewed up the victory for Robert Morris.

Had it not been for Rogers and the Eagles’ offensive line, the Saints (1-3) would have celebrated a victory featuring their big offensive numbers. Ruffin caught eight passes for 226 yards (17 shy of the school record) and four touchdowns. Lexus Jackson caught nine for 117 yards and a last-minute touchdown.

Don Butkus completed 22 of 36 passes for 367 yards and five TDs.

The 6-4 Ruffin, a sophomore who came to USF at 160 pounds and now weighs 185, was all-conference in track last spring. He was on the USF 4x400 relay that finished fourth in the nation.

“Football and track are a good mix,” he said. “Track keeps me light and fast.”

In addition to Rogers and the Eagles, the Saints also dealt with a few injuries Saturday. Tight end Adam Morrison, defensive end Calvin Brayboy (Bolingbrook) and offensive guard Trevor Marevka (Peotone) were among those hurt. So was linebacker Mike Passo (JCA), but he did return.

With three losses and two in the MidStates Football Association Mideast League, odds are against the Saints as far as a postseason berth is concerned.

However, coach Joe Curry said this team will not quit. The 1-0 every week theme will remain in effect.

JOLIET – The Lincoln-Way Central girls golf team defended its title over Lincoln-Way East and West in the Lincoln-Way Cup on Saturday with a score of 295 at Woodruff.

The scramble duo of Grace Curran and Taylor Miron shot a 7-under-par 61. They carded seven birdies. Bri Bolden and Carly Schiene had three birdies in their 1-under 67. Hanah Mastandrea and Maddie Pyle had five pars for the third score, an 82. Ellen Duda and Zoe Zurawski had five pars to shoot a 85. Central is 11-0 in duals for the season.

JCA wins Oswego Invitational: Mia Bertino won the singles title, and McCoy Hutchinson and Maddie Bauer were the doubles champions to lead Joliet Catholic to the tournament championship. Clair Allgood finished sixth in singles, and Michelle Roberts-Sara Markun took sixth in doubles.

Lincoln-Way West Tournament:

It began Friday night, when the Joliet West football team put it all together in shutting out visiting Plainfield East, 25-0, on homecoming.

Then on Saturday afternoon, West graduate Korey Rogers returned home and became a one-man wrecking crew as he carried Robert Morris to a 38-35 victory over St Francis at Memorial Stadium, spoiling the Saints’ home opener and homecoming celebration.

West coach Jason Aubry, who has been in that position since separate programs were restored at Joliet Central and West in 2010, has to be a proud man this morning.

Aubry said after Friday night’s game that the way the Tigers played was “what we had pictured” this team would be able to do. If that is a sign of things to come, the Tigers (3-2) certainly are not too late to make a strong playoff push.

Aubry’s son, Jaxon, the Tigers’ sophomore quarterback, used an array of quick passes, getting the ball into the hands of playmakers such as Omari Ferguson, T.J. Neal, Johnny Holman and Alec Vonch. All Jaxon did was complete 17 of 20 passes for 227 yards.

“We knew they [Bengals] were going to bring pressure, which they did, so why have Jaxon sit back in the pocket?”

Jason Aubry said. “Our bubble screen game was working well because of our wide receivers. We call them our dogs.

They really get into people, blocking for each other.”

The Tigers also got the running game rolling as the game progressed, with No. 1 back Ezekiel Tullock and sophomore reserve Kendrick Roach benefiting from the work of the offensive line – tackles Omar Gandara and Jacob Tuider, guards Taje Hymon and Martin Lecense and center Patrick Leaf.

“Pat Leaf was in the defensive line last year,” Jaxon Aubry said. “He’s been doing a great job at center. He’s giving me perfect snaps [in the Tigers’ spread formation] all the time.”

As productive as West was offensively, the Tigers’ defense was every bit as good. The beast of a defensive end, Julius Garrett, had two sacks. Plainfield East (2-3) finished with 139 total yards and seven first downs, three on the first possession of the game.

Special teams had its moments as well. Neal partially blocked a punt that went for 23 yards early in the second quarter, and the offense proceeded to drive 80 yards for a score.

Then late in the third quarter, Neal blocked another punt in the end zone and recovered it for an apparent

Harvick wins at New Hampshire Rodon fans 11, delays Cleveland’s title plans

The Associated Press LOUDON, N.H. – Kevin Harvick has thrived as NASCAR’s version of a Game 7 master, steeling his nerves and flourishing in those win-or-else races that kept a championship push alive.

His Chase off to a rocky start, Harvick injected the Chase again with a rousing finish that eliminated a mustwin race for him and parked him in the next playoff round.

Harvick won Sunday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway to earn a spot in the second round of the NASCAR Sprint Cup playoffs, pulling away off a restart a year after a late loss at the track.

“It’s kind of like an addiction,” Harvick said. “You just love the rush of being able to be behind and be able to perform and make that happen.”

Harvick finished 20th in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship opener, which stuck him 15th in the standings. With another weak finish at New Hampshire, Harvick would have faced yet another race at Dover he might have had to win to advance.

His lap times in the No. 4 Chevrolet only got faster deeper into the race and he was soon nipping at Martin Truex Jr. and Matt Kenseth at the front of the field. Kenseth dominated the second half of the race and seemed poised to win the New Hampshire race for the third straight time.

Harvick, the 2014 Sprint Cup champion, had enough juice in the Chevy to zip past Kenseth with five laps left and join Truex as the drivers locked in the next round. Truex won the Chase opener at Chicagoland, and he led a race-high 141 laps at New Hampshire.

He won in a similar situation in 2014 at Phoenix when he needed a victory to advance to the championship race. Harvick won the finale and the championship at Homestead.

“The last two years, we’ve kind of just worn ourselves out and really stressed out over trying to perform at this level,” he said.

At Dover, it’s up to 14 other drivers to worry about a win.

Chase drivers took the top eight spots. The 16-driver Chase for the

Sprint Cup championship field will be cut to 12 after Dover.

Kenseth led 105 of 300 laps and would have clinched with the win, just as he did last season at New Hampshire when he was in perfect position to take advantage of Harvick’s fuel foul-up. Kenseth appeared to slow down just a bit off the last restart with five laps left, allowing Harvick to race side-by-side before he took off for his 11th win in 100 career starts at Stewart-Haas Racing.

“It was just a smooth restart. I just didn’t want to spin the tires,” Harvick said. “I don’t know what happened to him, or if I just timed it right.”

Kenseth won the May race at Dover and appears in solid shape to reach the second round.

Sky advances to semifinals with win over Atlanta The ASSOCIATED PRESS ROSEMONT – Courtney Vandersloot scored 21 points with 13 assists, Jessica Breland had 20 points and 16 rebounds, and the Sky beat the Atlanta Dream, 108-98, on Sunday to advance to the semifinals of the WNBA playoffs.

The Sky broke it open in the first five minutes of the third quarter. Tamera Young made fast-break layups on consecutive possessions during the Sky’s 10-2 run to start the quarter for a 66-52 lead. Atlanta was outscored 31-20

in the quarter.

The Sky cruised in the fourth – setting a season-high for total points – and will face Los Angeles in a best-of-five series.

Reigning MVP Elena Delle Donne missed her sixth straight game with a thumb injury for the Sky, but it didn’t seem to faze the Sky on the offensive end. The Sky had 26 assists, made 55 percent of their shots, and Young and Cappie Pondexter each scored 16 points.

The Sky set a WNBA record for the most points in the first quarter of a

playoff game when they built a 37-25 lead. But Angel McCoughtry kept the Dream within 56-50 at halftime after scoring 21 points, including 10 of Atlanta’s first 14 points.

Tiffany Hayes, who didn’t play in the first round because of a one-game suspension for accrued technicals in the regular season, scored 30 points for Atlanta. McCoughtry finished with 27 points, six rebounds and nine assists.

Joliet Catholic graduate Allie Quigley scored eight points on 3-for-7 shooting.

CLEVELAND – The prize they’ve been chasing for months was right there in front of the Cleveland Indians.

Carlos Rodon wouldn’t let them touch it.

Rodon struck out a career-high 11 over eight dominant innings, and the White Sox denied Cleveland a chance to win the AL Central title with a 3-0 win Sunday.

Blending a devastating fastball with a variety of off-speed pitches, Rodon (8-10) blanked the Indians on just two singles and easily handled the division leaders, who still haven’t wrapped up a playoff spot and have gone flat at the worst time possible.

“That’s the best I’ve seen him,” White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “It seemed like he got better as the game went along. He seemed to turn it up in key situations. He had it all. There’s a lot on the line for these guys playing on the other side. That’s a lineup that’s been able to rough us up, and he responded.”

Rodon spoiled a big day for the Indians. Cleveland needed to win its regular-season finale at home and for Detroit to lose to Kansas City for the Indians to clinch their first division championship since 2007. The Royals took care of the Tigers, 12-9, but the Indians fell flat and now must go to Detroit to try to wrap up the Central.

The clubs open a four-game series Monday at Comerica Park.

That hardly mattered to the White Sox, who enjoyed their weekend as spoilers.

“They’re eventually going to win it, but we won’t be around to see them celebrate,” third baseman Todd Frazier said. “You’ve got to take pride in every game and every series so they’ll have to do it on the road now.”

The Sox’s Carlos Sanchez had two RBIs off Josh Tomlin (12-9), who matched Rodon for 62/3 innings. But the left-hander turned in his best outing this season in Cleveland’s biggest game. He struck out the side in the eighth before David Robertson fanned three in the ninth for his 36th save.

Miami ace Fernandez dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS MIAMI – Jose Fernandez escaped from Cuba by boat on his fourth try as a teenager, and when his mother fell into the Yucatan Channel during the journey, he jumped in and pulled her out.

Fernandez’s heroic backstory made his death early Sunday that much more heart-wrenching. The charismatic Miami Marlins ace was killed in a boating accident at age 24.

Fernandez and two other people died when their 32-foot vessel slammed into a jetty off Miami Beach, authorities said.

Authorities didn’t know the time of the crash. The capsized boat was found shortly after 3 a.m.

“All I can do is scream in disbelief,” said Hall of Famer Tony Perez, a Marlins executive and native of Cuba. “Jose won the love of all. I feel as if I had lost a son.”

Major League Baseball released a

statement saying it was “stunned and devastated.”

“He was one of our game’s great young stars who made a dramatic impact on and off the field since his debut in 2013,” Commissioner Rob Manfred said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, the Miami Marlins organization and all of the people he touched in his life.”

The Marlins’ game Sunday at home against the Atlanta Braves was canceled.

The Braves, along with several other teams, quickly offered condolences.

“Hands down one of my favorite guys to watch pitch! He brought nothing but intensity and passion,” Boston Red Sox pitcher David Price tweeted.

Within hours after the news broke, Marlins players gathered at the ballpark to grieve together.

“A lot of words were said – meaningful words and emotion and prayer,” team president David Samson said. “Jose is a member of this family for all time.”

CHICAGO – David Ross homered and teamed with Jon Lester for another scoreless performance, and the Cubs hurt St. Louis’ wild-card chances with 3-1 victory over the Cardinals on Sunday night.

Ben Zobrist had three hits and scored two runs as the Cubs finished with a major league-best 57-24 home record. It’s the most home wins for the Cubs since they went 58-19 at the West Side Grounds in 1910.

The Cardinals lost for the third time in four games, wasting a chance to improve their playoff positioning. They remain a half-game back of San Francisco for the second NL wild card after the Giants lost, 4-3, at San Diego earlier in the day.

Ross, Lester’s regular catcher, plans to retire after the season and was greeted with a long standing ovation when he came to the plate in the second in-

ning. St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina walked halfway to the mound, forcing the unassuming Ross to take in the moment, and he took off his batting helmet to acknowledge the cheering crowd of 40,859.

Ross then struck out against Carlos Martinez, but he got another chance in the fifth and drove the right-hander’s second pitch over the wall in left for 1 -0 lead. Ross clapped his hands as he rounded first on his 10th homer and the cheers continued after he reached the dugout, prompting a curtain call.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon pulled Ross with two out in the top of the seventh, giving the crowd another opportunity to cheer the journeyman catcher.

Lester (19-4), one of the top candidates for the NL Cy Young Award, struck out seven in 62/3 innings. The left-hander allowed three hits and walked one while improving to 10-0 with 1.34 ERA in his last 13 starts.

Glasses correct most astigmatisms times are an option, but they aren’t as effective for severe astigmatism.

Another option is corrective surgery.

The most common type used to correct astigmatism is LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis).

In LASIK, the doctor makes a small incision on the surface of the eye to create a small flap of tissue, which is lifted up.

Then the doctor uses a cool laser beam to correct the irregular shape of the cornea.

Recovery usually is quick and painless.

When LASIK surgery was introduced, I took a wait-and-see attitude. The surgery clearly produced short-term improvement in vision, with minimal risks. But I was concerned about the possibility that over the longer term the surgery would become less effective, or there would be adverse effects. Today, after nearly 30 years of its use, I’m much more confident in recommending this procedure to my patients.

It’s the unusual person, though, who needs surgery to correct astigmatism.

Glasses have always worked for me, as did contact lenses.

I think eyeglasses are one of the most important medical discoveries – right up there with antibiotics, X-rays and vaccines. So many children and young adults begin to lose clear vision due to myopia, astigmatism and other common eye problems. Without eyeglasses, society would be much less happy and productive.

Dear Dr. K: At my last visit, my eye doctor told me I have astigmatism. He told me what that means, but I still don’t really understand what it is. Please explain it to me.

Dear Reader: Astigmatism means the eye’s cornea has an irregular shape, which causes vision problems. Astigmatism is very common; I am among the several billion people who have it. Fortunately, it’s easy to correct.

Let’s start with a little eye anatomy. The cornea is the clear, dome-like window at the front of the eye. Rays of light pass through the cornea and then through the lens, which focuses images onto the retina. The retina captures the images and sends them to the brain via the optic nerve.

The cornea normally is round. In people with astigmatism, the cornea may be shaped like a football or oval. This causes light to scatter instead of focus on a single point as it passes through the cornea.

Blurred vision is the most common symptom of astigmatism. Some people describe it as double vision but in only one eye. You may develop eyestrain, squinting and headaches from working to focus on near or distant objects.

Many people have some degree of astigmatism; in fact, it is rare to find a perfectly formed eye. Although people are born with astigmatism, it often is Not noticed until a child attends school or learns to read. Astigmatism tends to remain stable, but it slowly may worsen over time. An eye doctor can diagnose astigmatism using a standard eye examination.

Glasses are a good, reliable choice for correcting astigmatism. Patients who prefer contact lenses may be limited to hard contact lenses. Soft lenses some-

How does that apply to this deal?

South is in three no-trump. West leads the heart jack: three, two, king.

What happens after that?

North followed a textbook transfer sequence, showing exactly five spades and game values.

South, after taking the first trick, unblocks (cashes) his spade honors and continues with a low club. A defender who believes implicitly in second hand low will hasten to contribute his club three, and declarer will claim nine tricks: five spades, three hearts and that club.

When East played the heart two at trick one, he denied an honor in the suit. (With honor-doubleton, East would have tabled that high card to tell partner what was happening and, potentially, to unblock the suit.)

So, West should immediately credit South with three heart tricks. After seeing the spade ace and king, West can give declarer five spade winners.

If South also takes a club trick, he is home.

With nary a nanosecond to spare, West must win the fourth trick, cash his diamond ace (being blind to East’s three; he couldn’t afford to signal higher), and continue the suit. In this way, the defenders quickly take one club and four diamonds to defeat the contract.

The successful bidder shall be required to provide a Performance Bond and a Material and Labor Payment Bond in the amount of 110% of the Contract Amount, as well as liability and property insurance as required by the Bidding Requirements before commencing work. The successful bidder shall enter into a formal contract based on the conditions and requirements in the Bidding Requirements and the Bidding Requirements will be incorporated into the Contract. The successful bidder will be required to comply with the provisions of all State of Illinois and federal laws concerning public works projects, including but not limited to the Illinois Human Rights Act, the regulations of the Illinois Human Rights Commission and the Prevailing Wage Act. The Village of Channahon reserves the right to reject any and all bids, and to waive any technicalities and irregularities in the bidding and to hold the bid proposals for a period of ninety (90) days from the date of opening set forth above.
