JOLIET – A new operator is ready to take over the Grand Ballroom at Union Station in January.

The Joliet City Council this week approved a six-year lease with JBM Golf Properties to take over the banquet space.

Bussean Custom Caterers is leaving after running the facility since the banquet hall since 2001. JBM runs McWethy’s Tavern at the Mistwood Golf Club in Romeoville, where it also has a banquet facility, and McQ’s, a sports dome in Bolingbrook with a restaurant and bar.

General Manager Dan Bradley said JBM is eager to get started at Union Station.

“We want the keys. We have brides ready to book events,” Bradley told the council before it voted unanimously in favor of the lease Tuesday.

The lease calls for JBM to pay a minimum rent of $1,500 a month, starting in August 2017. The city is providing time for the company to begin booking events before paying minimum rent.

JBM also will pay the city a percentage of revenues at Union Station, so Joliet will get income from any events held at the banquet hall before August. The lease calls for JBM to pay 15 percent of revenues up to gross sales of $500,000, 10 percent of revenues on sales between $500,000 and $750,000, and 5 percent of revenues beyond $750,000.

The minimum rent would kick in only if the percentage on sales does not reach $1,500.

The city sent out requests for proposals after Bussean gave notice that it planned to leave in mid-January. JBM was one of two companies that pursued the lease.

JBM was chosen in large part because of its commitment to open the Union Station banquet hall for community events beyond private bookings, said Councilman Larry Hug, chairman of the Economic Development Committee, which recommended JBM for the lease.

“It’s a great future for a very historic setting,” Hug said.

Bradley mentioned holiday brunches and craft beer tastings as two possibilities

for future events.

“Our plan is to develop a series of social events,” he told the council. “We want to bring the community into that space.”

Bradley said the train station banquet space “has a vintage look and feel. We want to keep that tradition.”

Union Station opened in 1912. Restoration in the 1990s included the addition of the banquet space while the building continued to serve as a train station. It stopped operating as a train station in September 2014 as the city moved boarding areas to the other side of the railroad tracks in preparation for a new train station. Construction on the new station is slated to begin in the coming weeks.

Plainfield board OKs spending for projects

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield trustees at a meeting Monday authorized spending by several village departments.

Trustees voted 4-0, with Margie Bonuchi and Garrett Peck absent, to award the Route 30 water main replacement project to Superior Excavating Co., the low bidder, for $784,458.

Village engineer Derek Wold said at the meeting the village has not worked with Superior Excavating Co. before, but that the city of Aurora works with the company often and gave it very good reviews.

The project, which had 13 bidders, includes about 3,800 feet of water main.

The village requested alternative bids by firms to include PVC pipe, instead of iron, which could reduce the project cost by $30,000. Wold said PVC is also more resistant to corrosion.

Parkways throughout Plainfield will see improvements as well.

Trustees authorized the village to purchase and install about 800 parkway trees from the Suburban Tree Consortium at a cost not to exceed $200,000.

Plainfield Director of Public Works Allen Persons said at the meeting the village is down to about 500 ash trees as a result of the

destruction of the emerald ash borer.

The village at one time had more than 5,000 ash trees and has planted 2,600 trees of different species to replace the ash trees it has lost.

Trustees also awarded the 2016 concrete curb and sidewalk program to Davis Concrete Inc., the lowest bidder, in the amount of $104,336.50. Persons said more than a mile of sidewalk will be replaced throughout the village.

The village board also: • Approved a contract with HLR Inc. for phase three of the 127th Street and 248th Avenue shared-use path project in an amount not to exceed $32,576.

• Awarded work on the 127th Street and 248th Avenue shared-use path project to D Construction in the amount of $198,658.70.

• Authorized the Plainfield Police Department to purchase of 38 new X-CAL LP Special Threat rifle plates for $8,968. Chief John Konopek said the plates will better protect officers from higher-powered guns.

• Authorized the village to purchase and install equipment to upgrade the village hall boardroom’s sound system. Trustees, staff and constituents have had issues hearing each other during public meetings. The total project cost is not to exceed $15,050.

• Authorized purchase of mobile building inspection software in an amount not to exceed $35,192.

Local volunteers join national Saluting Branches cause

bokon@shawmedia.com ELWOOD – Arborists and helpers cut down dead trees, fertilized living ones and pruned others that needed it Wednesday at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.

It was the second Saluting Branches event, a day of volunteering for arborists across the U.S. An estimated 1,400 volunteers helped out at 36 veterans cemeteries.

“It’s my ability with my skill to give back in a beautiful area that should be as beautiful as possible,” said Brandon Dobnick, a tree-climber for the Morton Arboretum and who was among 14 volunteers at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood.

The help is needed not just for aesthetic value, but also for safety’s sake because of the hazard that falling branches could pose, Jason Grizzle said. Grizzle is a gardener for the cemetery.

Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery has been dealing with growing numbers of dead ash trees that have been infested by the emerald ash borer beetle. The pest has infested the tree species across the country.

“It saves a lot of money budget-wise for the government,” Grizzle said of the volunteer effort within the cemeteries.

Dobnick and others were cutting down dead trees in a new section of the Memorial Walkway, where a tree service earlier this year was hired to cut down about 30 trees.

“That was a lot of money,” Grizzle said. “We had to block off this walkway because all the ash trees were disintegrating and falling apart.”

Jim Teiber, arborist for the city of Joliet, has been the site leader organizing the work at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery for the past two years. Teiber said companies contribute time, employees and equipment for an important cause.

“We’re at a cemetery for people who gave everything so these people could stand here today,” he said.

That message was not lost on the volunteers.

“I was actually thoroughly impressed,” Dobnick said of his first look at the cemetery as he drove in.

“It’s big,” Todd Kramer with Kramer Tree Experts of West Chicago said of the 982-acre cemetery. “A lot of work.”

Kramer’s crew had its work cut out for it in removing 40 dead ash trees. They brought a grapple loader, a machine capable of picking up trees and moving them into an 18-inch chipper. They also had a 60yard chip truck.

Other companies at the cemetery included Stumps Arbor Care and The Davey Tree Expert Co. Nestle USA provided water and snacks for the workers and volunteers.

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Fifth-grade students at A.O. Marshall Elementary School were presented Wednesday with a cart filled with 30 laptops.

Joliet Public Schools District 86 Superintendent Theresa Rouse handed the keys to the cart filled with Google Chromebooks to fifth-grade teachers Deanna Lombardi and Vanessa McNeff, whose students demonstrated more than two years of growth in math during last year’s STAR360 assessment and more than one year’s growth in reading.

“It’s not a car, but I have keys to turn over to you,” Rouse said.

The cart was topped with a green bow and rolled into a classroom with students, who applauded when they found out they were being given Chromebooks.

STAR360 is one of several assessments used at the district. Students in grades first through eighth take the assessment in the fall, winter and spring, Sandy Zalewski, District 86 spokeswoman, stated in an email. She stated that last year was the first time district officials used the assessment.

STAR360 predicts how students will score on the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers exam and monitors achievement on Common Core state standards, according to the district’s website.

Rouse told the group of students at Marshall that the district wants to always celebrate great accomplishments in the schools and the academic growth as a result of Lombardi’s and McNeff’s work was one of them.

She said the two years of growth in math is amazing.

“To be able to take students from where they are, and increasing their skills by two years – it’s pretty incredible,” Rouse said.

Lombardi and McNeff said they

were excited about the recognition.

“We think our kids worked really hard last year,” Lombardi said.

McNeff said she and Lombardi always have high expectation of the students.

“We’re holding the same expectations this year,” she said.

Marshall Principal Luis Gonzalez said he was proud of the teachers.

“I’m proud of their dedication, their investment to our students and to their success,” he said.

“To be able to take students from where they are, and increasing their skills by two years – it’s pretty incredible.”

Joliet D-204 board approves alumni services contract Alumni association said to need more members

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet High School District 204 board approved a new alumni services provider to replace Alumni Research, which district officials stopped using last year after learning it had been sued by Florida’s attorney general.

Five board members approved Tuesday a one-year contract with Wisconsin-based Alumni Nations for $8,250. Board President Jeff Pierson and board member R. Dale Evans were absent.

Superintendent Cheryl McCarthy told the board Tuesday that last year district officials began the process of looking for a company for alumni services.

“Alumni Nations was way above the other companies,” said Illandus Hampton, assistant superintendent for business services.

The company will replace Florida-based Alumni Research, which the district and its alumni office had been using since 2003.

The alumni office learned July 22, 2015, that Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi had filed a lawsuit against the company. District 204 officials downloaded records into an Excel spreadsheet as a temporary solution, according to a Sept. 14 memo by Kristine Schlismann, the district’s community and alumni relations director.

In a June 30, 2015, complaint, the attorney general’s office stated Alumni Research went from being a

“legitimate, successful” business to a “scheme replete with a widespread pattern of false promises and outright deceit.”

Alumni Research was banned from marketing and selling alumni directory books, telemarketing and any other commercial telephone solicitation, according to a Feb. 26 Florida attorney general’s news release. Alumni Research also was required to pay about $4.5 million in consumer restitution and civil penalties.

Board member Arlene Albert asked if district officials were sure Alumni Nations was a strong company.

Hampton said if the district were ever to separate with its contract with the company, the information will belong to the district. He said the district has its own platform where the alumni information can

continue to be maintained.

The contract with Alumni Nations includes a “data hygiene process” for alumni contact information, a cloud-based data management platform and access to commercialized programs, templates and communication management tools.

“This is something that’s really important for reaching our alumni in the community – that’s 84,000 names and information,” said Tyler Marcum, board member.

Alumni Association

Marcum, who is also the district’s Alumni Association board member, said during the meeting that the association is in need of more members. He said in the last few months, the association lost a few members.

“If you guys knows anybody who wants to join, we do need more members,” he said.

Shorewood man working with Rep. Foster on legislation to bring daughter back to America

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Michael Sanchez has an 11-year-old daughter. The Shorewood man said he has spent what amounts to about six weeks of time with her.

It’s not that he’s chosen to be away from her: He alleges the child’s mother took her to Brazil on Easter Sunday in 2008, and never came back.

A court battle for Sanchez’s daughter, Emily, began shortly after she was born in 2005. Sanchez fought with his first love for custody of Emily. In 2007, the two sides reached an agreement. Emily’s mother would have custody, but Sanchez would get to see his daughter every other weekend and two days during the week, he said.

But it didn’t last long. Emily’s mother had complained to Sanchez she felt the court wasn’t being fair, and Sanchez knew she was not a legal U.S. citizen. He said she was scared that she was going to be deported; he said she then left the country.

Sanchez was then granted sole custody of Emily by a Cook County

court – but he noted it doesn’t mean anything because she isn’t here.

International child abduction is legislated by the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction.

Brazil has been part of the convention since 2000, but has been accused of noncompliance by Sanchez and others.

In 2011, Sanchez went to Brazil for a couple weeks, and visited Emily.

He saw her again that December.

Since then, their only contact has been through FaceTime or Skype.

He has set up a GoFundMe account, www.gofundme.com/EmilyMachado2008, in hopes that people will help him fly to Brazil – a trip he can’t afford.

“I’m out of options,” Sanchez said.

“I’ve done everything I possibly could.”

His goal is to stay in Brazil as long as six months to get Emily back to America.

Earlier this month, Sanchez met with U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, and discussed his situation and Brazil’s noncompliance. He said he is working with Foster to get legislation introduced to Congress that

will prevent similar situations in the future.

“Emily’s Law” would allow airport security to detect if a parent is violating a custody order or visitation order by attempting to leave the country without the other parent’s consent.

Foster’s press secretary, Mary Werden, said the office is still gathering information about the case and overall issue. She said Foster is concerned, and his office will continue to see what can be done about it.

Sanchez works as a mental health counselor. But the years of battling for Emily have led him to seek help from mental health professionals for his own symptoms. He said he’s suffered post-traumatic stress, anxiety and depression.

There were warning signs from Emily’s mother that an abduction might occur, Sanchez said. She pushed for full custody and threatened several times to leave the country. He said he’s learned these actions, and secretly obtaining passports and visas, are common warning signs of an abduction. He hopes other parents take the warning signs seriously.

The U.S. Department of Justice announced earlier in September that almost $9 million has been awarded to Illinois law enforcement agencies and one nonprofit to help support DNA analysis capacity enhancement, youth mental health services, and costs of equipment and personnel, according to a news release from the office of U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois.

Antonio S. David, 52, also was allegedly carrying guns and police identification in his car when he was taken into custody.

Will County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said deputies went at 8 p.m. Sept. 15 to David’s residence in the 500 block of Larkspur Drive to serve an arrest warrant. David had been charged with two counts

of delivery of methamphetamine after an investigation by the Joliet Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad.

When David returned home, he was stopped by police, who discovered his vehicle registration did not match the Chevrolet Camaro he’d been driving, Hoffmeyer said.

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A wrongful death complaint was filed Wednesday in Grundy County on behalf of the estates of Mark and Janice Wendling, the couple struck from behind and killed while riding bicycles in June on Old Stage Road.

The complaint was filed against Tabatha Vandover, mother of the teen driver involved in the crash, and Chris Maier, who owned the vehicle driven by the teen.

Timothy Tomasik, founding partner of Tomasik Kotin Kasserman, said his firm was filing the lawsuit on behalf of Raymond P. Migas, who was appointed independent executor of the estates of the Wendlings.

The eight-count complaint alleges that the teen, who was 16 at the time of the crash, negligently failed to keep a proper and sufficient lookout, and failed to decrease speed to avoid colliding with the cyclists.

The complaint further alleges that Maier, the owner of the GMC Yukon involved in the crash and principal of Morris Elementary District 54, negligently entrusted and failed to properly supervise the teen in allowing him to drive the SUV. Tomasik said in a phone interview that the teen has been ticketed while driving two separate vehicles owned by Maier.

The complaint alleges that Maier loaned and entrusted his vehicle to the teen when he knew or should have

known that the teen was an incompetent, reckless and inexperienced driver.

“This incident was entirely preventable, and Mr. Maier should have known better than to entrust his Yukon SUV to a teen with a notoriously dangerous driving record,” Tomasik said in a news release. “By the same measure, the teen should have exercised more care in his operation of the SUV. The deaths of these two wonderful parents and people is simply senseless. We are going to uncover every fact regarding this terrible tragedy.”

The teen was cited with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, a charge that was issued June 21, the day of the crash.

Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland said his office is waiting for all the evidence to be analyzed before the office can determine if further charges will be filed.

Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan said his office is in the last stages of the investigation and hopes to have final results to Helland’s office soon.

“We will in no way interfere with the current investigation, and [will] cooperate fully with all law enforcement,” Tomasik said in an email.

Janice Wendling was a math teacher in District 54 and Mark Wendling worked as an engineer at the Exelon LaSalle County Generating Station in Marseilles.

Maier did not immediately return a call for comment.

Attempts Wednesday to contact Vandover were unsuccessful.

New Lenox couple exposed to rabid bat The HERALD–NEWS NEW LENOX – The seventh rabid bat reported in Will County in 2016 was found Friday in a New Lenox residence, according to a news release from the County Executive’s Office.

A dog that was living in the residence killed the bat in the backyard. The residents used their hands to pull the bat out of the dog’s mouth and contacted the Will County Animal Control Department.

The bat tested positive Monday for rabies. The two dogs in the household are current on rabies vaccinations. The residents of the home, a husband and wife, have been advised to begin treatment since both handled the rabid bat and had contact with the dog’s mouth to free the bat.

September is a prime month for bat exposure, the release said. Will County residents are reminded to follow guidelines to protect themselves from rabies, including: • Do not feed, touch or adopt wild animals, or stray dogs or cats.

• Be sure dogs and cats are up to date

on their rabies vaccinations.

• Do not allow pets to roam free.

• Do not attract wild animals to a home or yard. Store birdseed or other animal feed in containers with tight-fitting lids. Feed pets indoors. Make sure garbage cans are tightly closed. Board up any openings to the attic, basement, porch or garage. Cover chimneys with screens.

• Encourage children to immediately tell an adult if they are bitten or scratched by an animal. Teach children not to approach or touch any animal they do not know.

• Report all animal bites to the local animal control agency.

• Do not engage a wild animal that comes on your property. If the animal is acting abnormally, call animal control.

Residents should report any contact with a bat, or other warm-blooded animals, to the nearest animal control authority as soon as possible. The Will County Animal Control Department is available 24 hours daily at 815-462-5633.

The HERALD–NEWS BOLINGBROOK – Fountaindale Public Library District has refinanced virtually all of the General Obligation Library Building Bonds, Series 2008, that were used to construction a new facility in 2011.

The refinancing decreased interest costs and will save library taxpayers a total of $1.49 million during the

next 11 years, according to a news release from the library district.

S&P Global Ratings, acting through Standard and Poor’s Financial Services LLC, evaluated the library’s credit quality and assigned the district an “AA” rating with a stable outlook.

HARRY B. HILL Dr. Harry B Hill, D.D.S., a Joliet dentist since 1944, passed away peacefully in his sleep Tuesday morning, Sept. 20, 2016. He was 95.

Dr. Hill (“Doc”) was dedicated to taking care of his patients in the greater Joliet community for more than 55 years and fostered a light-hearted and relaxed environment for patients and office staff.

Dr. Hill was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish, be it in the Wilmington area, where he owned a property, or on one of several trips to Mexico, Costa Rica, Kansas or the far north of Canada throughout the years. He enjoyed being down in the country, whether he was on the tractor mowing, building fences, planting trees or simply enjoying a cold beer.

Never one to walk when he could drive, he relished driving through the country spotting birds and wildlife, or cursing the latest beaver dam, and usually exceeded the speed limit.

Due to his rural upbringing and love of the outdoors, his family often joked that he never let dentistry interfere with his “farming.”

He was ever curious and enjoyed learning new things. Despite being a medical professional, he was fascinated by the world of business and financial markets and more recently, the technology revolution. His 1990s quip, “before I die I’m going to learn how to use a computer,” resulted in the first of many computers owned throughout his lifetime, and hours spent with his daughter exploring the nuanced difference between “Save” and “Save As.” His curiosity barely waned with age, as he continued to dabble on his iPhone and his wife’s iPad well into his nineties.

After retirement Dr. Hill and his wife of 52 years, Shirley, spent several winters on Marco Island with friends, and traveled to various areas in central America, Europe and Russia.

He played golf throughout much of his life and was a member of the Medicare Swingers league at Inwood Golf Course for many years.

However there was no place where Dr. Hill was more at home and in his element than at “The Lake,” a strip mine-turned-recreational-property owned jointly with the William B. Norton family of Morris. The Lake has been home to countless barbeques, camp-outs, swimming parties, boating parties and family gatherings throughout the years, as well as serving as home base for Dr. Hill and friends’ duck club and their various hunting and fishing exploits.

Harry Bray Hill was born Aug. 22, 1921, in

Cass, West Virginia to Grace (Barlow) and Harry B. Hill, a pharmacist and schoolteacher, respectively. He attended elementary school in Cass, followed by Green Bank High School in Pocahontas County, WV, and college at West Virginia University. After graduating college, he was accepted to the dental school at Northwestern University in Chicago, where he graduated D.D.S. in 1944.

Dr. Hill settled in Joliet in 1944, where he practiced dentistry, first in the Barber building at 68 N. Chicago Street, and later at 300 N. Hammes Avenue, until his retirement in July of 2000. He was a retired member of the Will County Dental Society, Illinois State Dental Society and the American Dental Association.

Dr. Hill was a proud veteran, having served his country twice – first as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War II, and later as a Captain in the USAF with the 43rd Bomb Wing at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson, AZ, during the Korean War. Dr. Hill is preceded in death by parents Grace and Harry B. Hill Sr. of Joliet; and brother, Asa Charles (A.C.) Hill of Wilton, Connecticut.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley H. Hill of Joliet; two daughters, Deborah H. Staley of Woodstock, and Kimberly B. Hill of New York, NY; niece, Dana Lynn (J.P.) Beckham of Ashburn, VA; nephew, Scott (Lorrie) Hill, of Wilton, CT; and three grandchildren, Erin Staley of Los Angeles, CA, Amber (Jason) Staley-Walters of Crystal Lake, and Ashley Staley of Chicago.

Dr. Hill would have met his first great-grandchild in November.

The Hill Family wishes to thank the staff at Provena St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet and Alden Estates of Shorewood for providing excellent care during Harry’s brief stay.

Ill. gets $1.8M for low-income students taking AP tests

CHICAGO – Illinois will receive nearly $1.8 million to help low-income students take advanced placement tests.

The U.S. Department of Education announced today that it has awarded the grants as part of efforts to boost college- and career-readiness for underserved students. The tests let students obtain college credit for high school courses, reducing the time and cost required to complete a postsecondary degree.

Teachers union begins strike authorization vote

CHICAGO – Teachers in the nation’s third-largest school district are casting ballots on whether they support a strike.

Members of the Chicago Teachers Union began voting for a strike authorization Wednesday. Voting lasts through Friday. Union officials said the results won’t be available right away.

The union needs 75 percent support, which is expected. A similar vote in December garnered support from about 88 percent of the voting members. Union members said the second vote offers legal cover.

If the union goes on strike, they have to give the district 10 days of notice. The earliest a walkout could take place is mid-October.

Work on bridge to resume after bats force delay

VINCENNES, Ind. – A project to restore a historic southwestern Indiana bridge will resume in October after a months-long delay caused by the discovery that endangered bats use the span as a roosting site.

The $3.2 million upgrade of the Lincoln Memorial Bridge that links Vincennes and Westport, Illinois, over the Wabash River was supposed to begin in March.

But crews found that the federal endangered Indiana bat uses the bridge as a roosting site and federal rules restrict work that could potentially disturb the bats between April 1 and Oct. 1.

A contractor will now begin work in

October for the expected six-month project that includes cleaning, paving and repairing the bridge’s facade.

New polling place sought for contaminated complex

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. – Lake County election officials are searching for a new polling place where residents of a lead-contaminated public housing complex can vote this fall.

County Elections Director Michelle Fajman said Tuesday that precinct committeemen are expected to meet soon to suggest an alternate polling place to replace the one used last spring in the recreation center of the West Calumet Housing Complex in East Chicago.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has released data showing the soil at the complex is highly contaminated with lead and arsenic, and the city has decided to demolish the complex.

There have been political calls, including from Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, to treat terror suspects like Rahami as enemy combatants, which would deny them certain constitutional rights.

But there’s extremely limited and unsettled precedent for doing that when a defendant is captured on U.S. soil.

One 2002 instance involved Jose Padilla, who was first held as an enemy combatant before being prosecuted and convicted in federal court.

Rahami has been hospitalized since his arrest in Linden, New Jersey. He had not spoken with investigators as of Tuesday evening.

But the Justice Department permits agents to question terror suspects and use their statements, without first advising them of their right to remain silent, when there’s an immediate concern for public safety.

Randall Jackson, a former federal prosecutor who worked on the case against the Times Square bomber and now is in private practice, said investigators are surely hoping Rahami will talk.

“It’s safe to say that in any investigation like this where you’re dealing with an apprehended suspect of this type, every effort will be made to obtain all the useful information you could possibly obtain from that person,” he said.

Although federal charges were lodged against Rahami Tuesday in criminal complaints in both New Jersey and New York, U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, the top federal prosecutor in Manhattan, said Wednesday his office had already arranged for U.S. marshals to bring Rahami to New York for trial.

“We have a good track record of getting it done properly,” Bharara said.

But on the International Day of Peace, tensions from all parts of the planet filled the halls of the United Nations.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang voiced his country’s mounting frustration with ally North Korea’s pursuit of nuclear weapons, highlighting the urgency of reaching “a comprehensive political solution on the Korean nuclear issue.”

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe devoted about half of his address to North Korea, which earlier this month conducted its fifth nuclear test in defiance of repeated Security Council resolutions intended to constrain its weapons development.

Abe said North Korea this year fired three missiles into Japan’s exclusive economic zone and it was a matter of luck that no ships or aircraft were damaged.

He urged unity in the Security Council to confront the North Korean threat.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Authorities tried to quell public anger and correct what they characterized as false information Wednesday after a night of looting and arson added Charlotte to the list of U.S. cities that have erupted in violence over the death of a black man at the hands of police.

With officials refusing to release any video of the shooting of 43-year-old Keith Lamont Scott, two starkly different versions emerged: Police said Scott disregarded repeated demands to drop his gun, while neighborhood residents said he was holding a book, not a weapon, as he waited for his son to get off the school bus.

The killing inflamed racial tensions in a city that seemed to have steered clear of the troubles that engulfed other places.

They can take out 8 percent annually, and there’s no upfront commission on that $16,000.

But the different types of guaranteed minimum income benefits, flexible guaranteed minimum withdrawal benefits, fixed income options, different riders, enhanced death benefit, fixed account balances, withdrawal limitations, future earnings accumulation, etc., are confusing to them and to me.

They also visited a stockbroker at a small firm we’d never heard of. That broker told them to buy Southern Co., the iShares U.S. Preferred Stock ETF and Energy Transfer Partners. (SO-$50.95) is a $16.8 billion-revenue electric utility. SO’s board has increased the dividend every year since 2002, and today’s $2.24 dividend, which may be raised to $2.32 next year, yields 4.7 percent. SO’s recent $7.9 billion acquisition of AGL

Resources, a Fortune 500 natural gas utility, should enable SO to sweetly improve earnings and enhance its steady dividend growth. Some analysts believe that beginning next year, SO should be able to grow its dividend between 4.5 and 5 percent annually.

Good choice, that!

Energy Transfer Partners (ETP$39.78) gathers, processes, stores and transports natural gas, natural gas liquids and oil. This stock may be too dicey, but I agree with Stifel’s ETP recommendation, as well as those on Wall Street who insist there’s impressive potential here. ETP also wholesales and retails gasoline and owns 47,000 miles of pipeline. This $24 billion-revenue master limited partnership, also a recent Goldman Sachs recommendation, has a $4.22 dividend that yields 10.9 percent. Goldman owns 26 million shares. Kayne Anderson Capital Advisors owns 31 million, and Morgan Stanley owns 15 million. They believe that next year, ETP will generate $27 billion in revenue and increase its dividend to $4.40. And Value Line believes that in the coming three to four years, ETP could trade in the $70s. ETP has long legs and is an egregious speculation of

Although they’re vulnerable to rising rates, preferred stocks and their relevant exchange-traded funds have become a popular destination for income investors. The iShares U.S. Preferred Stock ETF (PFF-$40.15) tracks the results of the Standard & Poor’s U.S. Preferred Stock Index, which measures the performance of preferred stocks listed on the New York Stock Exchange, the American Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq. PFF invests 90 percent of its $15.7 billion of assets in various components of the index and up to 10 percent of its assets in futures, options and swap contracts. The one-year total return is 5.59 percent. The three-year is 5.78 percent, and the five-year is 6.05 percent. PFF has been a steady Eddie for the past five years.

It’s difficult for folks with limited funds to get good advice. Give that broker a gold star, and buy him a 5-gallon tub of Harley-Davidson ice cream.

Live music, street vendors and a food court were just some of the many features lining Chicago and Van Buren streets. Continued from page 21 After holding down a variety of jobs during the past three years, Jackson realized that it was time to finish up the last two years of his education to give himself better opportunities.

“This will set a good example for (Jaden) and he’ll know that he has big shoes to follow,” Jackson said.

“I just want him to be successful and whatever he has to do, he just has to go hard at it and stay focused. Whatever you want to be in life you can achieve if you really believe it.

“Jaden’s my best friend and we pretty much do everything together. He’s just like a spitting image of me when I was younger. Everything he’s doing is like what I did when I was little. It’s crazy to be able to see him grow up. So I’m trying to lead him down the right path so that he doesn’t have to worry about some things I worried about growing up.

“He’s really excited to see me playing. He came to the last game when I ran the punt return back and said, ‘I saw your punt return, Dad.’ That definitely means a lot to me because it’s motivation to grind every day. And getting a degree will help me from a financial standpoint in being able to provide for my family. I want to make my whole family proud of me.”

Leaving St. Francis after the 2011 season, Jackson couldn’t have guessed that he not only would be back at the school one day, but also playing football again, this time as a 23-year-old who’s one of the oldest players on the team.

“I definitely didn’t see this happening,” Jackson said. “I just thank God that it did happen and that I got this opportunity, this second chance to do something positive with my life.

“It’s a little different story than when I started here, but the guys are

on my back and make sure that I stay on top of my game and I don’t slack.

They pretty much look up to me because I’m one of the older guys on the team. I love it here and definitely missed it. I’m grateful that I got the chance to be back here and around

all of these guys.”

With Jaden keeping an eye on his dad, Jackson again will be in the thick of the action Saturday when St. Francis opens its home season with a 3 p.m. game against Robert Morris at Joliet Memorial Stadium.

6. Lockport (3-1): After suffering their first loss to mighty Homewood-Flossmoor, the Porters should get back in the win column against winless Andrew. Taveras Moore rushed for 140 yards, Ben Davis threw for 226 and Austin Hoffman caught eight passes for 115 against H-F. 7. Morris (3-1): The Redskins went on the road for the first time and suffered their first loss, 2114, at Rochelle. Coach Alan Thorson said Morris shot itself in the foot too many times.

afford to have players going down, but that is what has happened. Eight defensive players alone have been or still are out with injury.

The result is there were a dozen sophomores listed on the varsity roster for the Notre Dame game, and most were not there to sit and watch. They are playing.

“This is a work in progress,” Sharp said. “Every once in a while, almost every program has a season like this. It reminds me of my first year at Minooka.

The seniors we have are working hard, and a foundation is being built. Our staff is doing a great job coaching the kids.”

Sharp became the Minooka coach in 1993, and his first team went 2-7. The Indians were a playoff qualifier the next three years, capped by a state semifinal appearance in 1996, his final season before taking over at JCA.

With a tick under two minutes remaining in the first half of Friday’s game against Niles Notre Dame at Memorial Stadium, Joliet Catholic junior left guard Shane Raber went down in pain.

Things have not been going well this football season for the Hilltoppers – either in the win-loss column or on the injury front. And at first, it appeared the 6-foot, 295-pound Raber might have suffered a bad ankle injury.

At the time, JCA was trailing, 14-3, but knocking on the door. The Hilltoppers had marched to a first down at the Dons’ 11-yard line and then had a second-and-5 at the 6 as Ke’Von Johnson picked up 5 of his 123 rushing yards.

However, Raber is JCA’s best offensive lineman. He is the only returning lineman from last year’s strong team.

Protecting the quarterback is a team effort, of course, but the Hilltoppers need Raber in the mix. Pat Roth was sacked

Bolingbrook looms as 1st major test for Bradley SHAW MEDIA

Bradley-Bourbonnais continued to put up big numbers on the scoreboard in its 42-30 victory over Sandburg in Week 4.

Quarterback Morion Burtis Jr. and wideout-safety Camron Harrell, an Iowa commit, again put on a show with the duo having a hand in all six of Bradley’s touchdowns.

The Boilermakers, ranked sixth in last week’s Associated Press Class 7A poll, have now scored at least 34 points in each of their four wins to open the season.

One consideration before adding Bradley-Bourbonnais to the list of elite teams in Class 7A – coach Mike Kohl’s squad hasn’t faced a taxing schedule thus far.

That changes Friday when the Boilermakers host Bolingbrook. We’ll find out then whether Bradley’s fantastic talent at the skill positions can overcome its size disadvantage against a larger opponent’s offensive and defensive lines.

Joliet Central snaps streak

The Joliet Township high schools, Central and West, returned to separate sports programs in 2010 after more than 15 years as a combined program. Central had not won a football game since the split. The Steelmen were 0-57 entering their Saturday afternoon homecoming game against Plainfield Central, which was on a 32-game losing streak of its own.

Joliet Central’s Jomarra McNair – he prefers JoJo – made sure the Steelmen’s skid did not reach 58. He outfought a Wildcats defender to haul in a 30-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Zach Wisneski with 29 seconds left, giving Joliet Central a 38-35 victory in a game where both sides played very well.

McNair’s athletic move after catching a pass on a crossing pattern in the closing seconds of the first half resulted in a 43-yard touchdown play that extended the Steelmen’s lead to 24-13. He also ran 55 yards for a touchdown on a jet sweep, caught a 7-yard touchdown pass, played his usual strong game at cornerback and returned kickoffs. He finished with eight receptions for 142 yards and three touchdowns and 91 rushing yards in six attempts and a touchdown.

Good players on teams that don’t win often sometimes are overlooked.

Joliet Central coach Brett Boyter said he feels McNair, also a basketball and baseball player, is as good an athlete as there is in the Joliet area. He said he

hopes college recruiters were watching Saturday.

Lincoln-Way East’s reversal of fortune

Lincoln-Way East, which was coming off a 35-30 loss to Homewood-Flossmoor in a battle between two of the state’s highest-ranked teams, turned the ball over four times and lost it on downs twice in its first nine possessions of Friday’s game at Bolingbrook.

All of that adversity put the Griffins behind, 16-7, early in the third quarter.

However, in an amazing turnaround, they exploded for 34 straight points in a 10-minute, 32-second stretch beginning with about 4 minutes left in the third quarter, and they went on to post a 41-23 victory.

Unpredictable Southwest Prairie

The Southwest Prairie Conference is nothing if not unpredictable. The most recent example came Friday night as Plainfield North visited Minooka in a battle between two seemingly evenly matched 2-1 teams that wanted to stay in the hunt for the SPC title.

So what happened? North took advantage of Minooka miscues and blew out to a 46-14 lead before halftime arrived en route to a 61-22 victory. Tigers quarterback Brady Miller threw for 241 yards and six touchdowns and Tyler Hoosman, who ran 78 yards for a score the first time he touched the ball, rushed for 164 yards in 14 attempts.

Seneca eyes playoff spot

A former perennial playoff qualifier from La Salle County has put itself in great shape for a surprising return this fall.

Riding high after Friday’s second-half domination of Westmont lifted their record to 3-1, the Seneca Fighting Irish can begin to seriously eye playoff scenarios and the path ahead, which could lead to a playoff-qualifying fifth win and/or a postseason-clinching sixth victory.

The five regular-season opponents awaiting Seneca have a combined record of 11-9, with two undefeated teams and two teams with losing records on the schedule – Wilmington (4-0), at ReedCuster (2-2), Peotone (1-3), at Herscher (4-0) and Sandwich (0-4).

Seneca is aiming for the 14th playoff appearance in school history, first since 2013 and only the Irish’s second since a four-year run of trips from 1998 to 2001.

“Our schedule is so good, but all we are worried about is getting better and competing every play,” Sharp said.

“We keep working on getting better.

We want to win some games for our seniors. We have three seniors on offense and five or six on defense. But what we are doing also will benefit us down the road. We are building a foundation, but it is a work in progress.”

JCA has been to the state playoffs the past 18 years under Sharp and has collected six state titles under his guidance, the most recent in 2007. The only time his Hilltoppers missed the playoffs was 1997, his first year. That team finished 5-5, losing its opening game in the Prep Bowl playoffs after going 5-4 in the regular season.

Sharp’s good friend, Wilmington coach Jeff Reents, is on target to gain his 200th coaching victory at the school Friday night when the Wildcats

visit Seneca.

Though it is the furthest thing from his mind, Sharp also is on the verge of No. 200 at JCA. He entered this season 198-43 with the Hilltoppers, so he now is 198-47.

To make the playoffs, the Hilltoppers must run the table, beginning with Friday night’s game at Marian Central. The Hurricanes are coached by former JCA all-stater Mike Maloney, who knows the euphoria of achieving a state championship from his days playing for Sharp.

Winning the last five, of course, is a tall order. But what we do know is the Hilltoppers and their staff will give it their best shot every week regardless of when the victories come. And if they happen to win twice along the way, they will go into the books as the team that vaulted Sharp over the 200-victory mark at JCA. Meanwhile, the foundation is being built. Regardless of how this season plays out, don’t be surprised if the Hilltoppers are back in 2017.

PHILADELPHIA – Tommy Joseph homered, doubled and drove in three runs and Jerad Eickhoff outpitched Chris Sale as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the White Sox 8-3 Wednesday night.

Philadelphia has won four of five. The Sox have lost five in a row.

The Phillies teed off on Sale (16-9), tagging the ace for six runs and seven hits in four innings.

It was the second-shortest outing of the season for Sale, and it snapped his run of six consecutive starts of at least eight innings. In four starts this season against NL teams, Sale is 0-4 with an 8.72 ERA. Eickhoff (11-13) pitched seven innings and gave up six hits, including three solo home runs, while striking out six.

Adam Eaton, Todd Frazier and Alex Avila homered for the Sox. Frazier hit his 38th and Avila followed with a drive in the seventh.

Phillies outfielder Tyler Goeddel had to leave the game in the sixth after being hit in the head by reliever Chris Beck.

Goeddel was the fourth Philadelphia player to be hit in the game, tying a franchise record that last occurred in 1960.

CHICAGO – John Lackey pitched seven solid innings for his first win in six weeks and Miguel Montero drove in three runs, helping the Cubs sweep the Cincinnati Reds with a 9-2 victory on Wednesday night.

Kris Bryant hit his 38th homer and Dexter Fowler also connected as the major league-leading Cubs moved a season-high 42 games over .500. The Cubs (97-55) also matched their win total from a year ago and lowered their magic number for clinching home-field advantage throughout the NL playoffs to two over Washington.

Lackey (10-8) allowed two runs and five hits in his first win since he beat the Angels on Aug. 9. The right-hander, who retired his last 14 batters, went 0-1 with a 2.55 ERA in his previous four starts.

The last-place Reds lost for the seventh time in eight games. They managed just five runs and 19 hits in the three-game series against the NL Central champions.

Robert Stephenson (2-2) was pulled with two out in the fourth inning. The rookie was charged with four runs and

eight hits and remains winless in four September starts.

Jose Peraza hit a tying RBI single in Cincinnati’s two-run second, but the Cubs pulled away from there.

Montero hit an RBI single in the third and a two-run single with two out in the sixth. The veteran catcher also scored on Michael Lorenzen’s balk in the fifth.

Bryant capped the scoring with a two-run shot to left in the seventh. It was Bryant’s 10th homer of the year against Cincinnati, tied for the second most for a single season against the Reds.

Montero, Ben Zobrist and Javier Baez each had three of the Cubs’ 15 hits, and Fowler scored three times from the leadoff spot.

About that rotation: Cubs’ righthander Kyle Hendricks, one of the leading contenders for the NL Cy Young Award, will start on seven days’ rest Monday at Pittsburgh, and the Cubs will have a bullpen day with several pitchers on Tuesday.

“It’s to look a lot of different things right now,” manager Joe Maddon said.

“Potentially line things up, potentially look at different people in different roles.”

Three young ILBs have opportunity to help replace Danny Trevathan

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com LAKE FOREST – It’s a week for the backups at Halas Hall because of Monday night’s slew of Bears injuries.

Jay Cutler, Eddie Goldman and Danny Trevathan highlighted the group of players who did not practice Wednesday, and that trio will be on the ‘DNP’ list for some time. Ka’Deem Carey, Adrian Amos, Bryce Callahan and Chris Prosinski also sat out.

Some of those players have the logical ‘next man up’ ready to step in, but replacing Trevathan isn’t so simple.

Vic Fangio said it could be Jonathan Anderson, Christian Jones or Nick Kwiatkoski who will get the nod to play next to Jerrell Freeman.

An undrafted rookie last season, Anderson stepped in and made some plays in the Bears’ nickel defense with 34 tackles and two passes defensed. He subbed in for Trevathan for two snaps on Monday.

“He’s a pretty good athlete as linebackers go,” Fangio said of Anderson.

“He’s got some safety experience in college. We’ve moved him up because of his size. And he’s done a nice job developing.”

Jones played inside linebacker last season, where he led the team in tackles, then moved to outside linebacker in the spring, but could be back inside on Sunday against Dallas. “[Jones] has some experience now at inside backer now after playing all those snaps last year,” Fangio said.

“He has some ability to cover. His length is an advantage inside too.”

Kwiatkoski didn’t play until the preseason finale, where he left a positive impression on Fangio with his

showing against the Browns, but the fourth-round pick has been inactive the first two games.

Last season, when the Bears moved inside linebackers around, they’d have a rotation based on the base and nickel defense. They haven’t had to do that with players of the caliber of Trevathan and Freeman, but it’s possible we see one player next to Freeman for the passing downs and a downhill thumper for the run downs.

“We did a great job in training camp, the preseason, we’ve been rotating,” Freeman said. “Everybody’s played with everybody. It’s not foreign for me to play with somebody else in our linebacking corps. … Everybody in that room’s always prepared. I’m not worried about the guys coming in.”

Limited players: Alshon Jeffery (knee), Bobby Massie (toe), Josh Sitton (shoulder), Kyle Fuller (knee), Sherrick McManis (wrist) and Tracy Porter (knee) were all limited in Wednesday’s session.

Long looking to bounce back: The Bears’ Pro Bowl guard was not pleased with his performance in Monday night’s loss to the Eagles. Kyle Long said that he’s learned over the years the ways to rally back from a rough outing.

“You have to be able to flush it and just press the reset button,” he said.

“There’s a fine line between just disregarding everything that happened and looking at it to figure out what you can do better and then forgetting about it and just moving on. Really, my approach has been what can I do to be the best player I can be this week to help my team, because I haven’t been that and I need to do that.”

The only thing that is certain, though, is that Newgarden will likely be the first domino to fall in what could be a frenzied offseason free agency that leads to new jobs for Montoya, Sebastien Bourdais, Tony Kanaan, Newgarden and others.

Meanwhile, Chip Ganassi has yet to announce a replacement sponsor for Target, which is leaving IndyCar after 27 seasons with the team owner.

Target’s departure leaves four-time series champion Scott Dixon without a sponsor, but Ganassi has shown no signs of worry. While the loss of Target could be seen as a blow to IndyCar’s place in the sports marketing world, the series was bolstered this weekend

by DHL Express renewing its sponsorship of Ryan Hunter-Reay through 2020 and Menards returning to the series in a significant sponsorship role with Pagenaud next season.

“Ryan is a tremendous brand ambassador for us,” DHL CEO Mike Parra said. “Then the association with ... having the Andretti name associated with DHL – we say we’re the world’s most international company. Who better than to be associated with what I believe is the best owner and the best name in this business?”

For John Menard, who spent years as both a team owner and sponsor in IndyCar before moving his focus to NASCAR and the career of his son, Paul, the return has been based on a sense of excitement around the series.

He first inched back to IndyCar with a three-race sponsorship agreement with Penske that included the Indianapolis 500. The deal grew to five races this season, and will be 10 as Pagenaud’s primary sponsor next year.

“I think IndyCar is on an upward trend now,” Menard said. “I think that they are to be commended, the people that are running it right now, because I think they’re doing a great job. It’s not easy right now competing for attention in the sports world with all the things that are going on. To see IndyCar having some growth, having really successful races ... we’re really excited to be back as part of it.”

The series will receive some much-needed attention through James Hinchcliffe’s participation in “Dancing With The Stars.” The Canadian has become a brand ambassador for IndyCar, and got the “DWTS” opportunity through appearances on “Family Feud” and “The Steve Harvey Show.”

SONOMA, Calif. – It was the year of Roger Penske in IndyCar. No team came close to stopping Team Penske’s march to the top of the standings.

When the checkered flag fell Sunday on the 2016 season, Penske drivers celebrated with their 10th victory of the year and a 1-2-3 finish in the final IndyCar standings. The last time a team swept the season standings was in 1994 by another Penske group: Al Unser Jr., Emerson Fittipaldi and Paul Tracy.

This trio of Simon Pagenaud, Will Power and Helio Castroneves couldn’t be touched this season as the entire organization was determined to forget its failure a year ago while giving the boss the gift of an IndyCar championship in the 50th anniversary season of Team Penske.

“The numbers look great, for sure.

It’s very satisfying,” said Pagenaud, who won his first championship in his sophomore season driving for Penske.

“It’s certainly a big year for us. Fifty-year anniversary, win for the team, winning myself, my name is always going to be there. It’s great to be the little thing I am in such a big team with such history.”

The dominance shown by the organization this year comes amid signs of promise for IndyCar’s future.

Although the series continues to be dwarfed by NASCAR in TV ratings, its viewership increased this season on NBC Sports Network. The 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 was sold out, and the series celebrated a new American winner that day in rookie Alexander Rossi.

Rossi didn’t put together a magical season after his surprising 15 minutes of fame, and right up until he ran out of gas in the last corner of Sunday’s season finale, he’s been a mixed bag.

“It’s weird how this sport works – we won the biggest race of the year the same way (on fuel),” Rossi said.

“It’s just the way it goes sometime. It’s easier to look back at things that could have been different, but that’s racing and I hope to show what I’m capable of in the future.”

What his future holds, nobody knows. Rossi could try to return to Formula One, where he’s still seeking a role beyond reserve driver, or return to IndyCar. He entered the series in a partnership between Bryan Herta and Andretti Autosport, but was suddenly mentioned at Sonoma Raceway as a potential candidate to drive for Penske.

Penske has yet to commit to four cars next season, which puts Juan Pablo Montoya in a state of limbo. While last year’s Indianapolis 500 winner doesn’t expect Penske to bring him back in 2017, Penske himself said planning is still ongoing and he’d like to have his lineup set in the next 60 days.

‘Bible & Brew’ serves up the gospel with meaning and enjoyment

JOLIET – “I come for the beer.”

That was Karen Williams’ top reason for attending the monthly “Bible & Brew” Bible study at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Joliet, where its pastor, the Rev. Matt Robinson, serves his home-brewed beer beside scripture.

But Williams, of Joliet, also likes Robinson’s Bible study.

“It’s not strict and organized,” Williams said. “It’s kind of laid back and everyone has a good time. And we’re allowed to share our opinions and not be judged.”

Robinson often revolves the study around a topic, which he writes on a whiteboard so everyone can see and add ideas. The topic for Sept. 14 was, “What is the least I can believe and still be a Christian?”

The answers were as varied as the beer Robinson served. “Love” was the most popular answer.

“There’s never a dull moment,” Barbara Pierce, of Plainfield, said.

“The pastor has the ability to spontaneously answer a question. He’s got a background in theology, which I appreciate because some pastors don’t.

So it’s invigorating and full of energy.”

Robinson is also experienced when it comes to Bible study. He’s led various Bible studies and workshops for more than 30 years. Robinson said he loves the church and never tires of studying the Bible.

“A few years ago, I took up home brewing because I love beer, too,” Robinson said.

Robinson mulled the idea for years.

He had friends that home brewed. He faithfully read home-brewing magazines.When Chicago Brew Werks opened in Plainfield, Robinson made up his mind.

“I did something I’ve never done in my life,” Robinson said. “I went shopping on Black Friday.”

Having acquired the basic equipment, Robinson, feeling like an alchemist, he said, was ready to launch his hobby. That was three years ago.

“I’ve been brewing ever since,” he said.

What Robinson didn’t anticipate was his level of enjoyment and desire to share it with others. He was aware of ministries that brought the gospel to bar patrons or Bible studies that met in taverns, but neither worked for

So Robinson devised a Bible study that would be “provocative and catchy, but not heavy graduate stuff.”

“I try to make them meaningful,” Robinson said, “but enjoyable, too.”

All beer, Robinson said as he began pouring, is either an ale or a lager.

Robinson said he only brews ales because his equipment is not capable of brewing lagers. The beer served Sept.

14 was brewed from Robinson’s recipes. The original formula called for malt extract, but Robinson has since converted all his recipes to use grain extract.

He recalled his initial brews from

several years ago.

“My very first beer was a red ale,” Robinson said. “My second was a chocolate stout because I love stout beer.”

Sometimes she has a beer – drinking beer is not a requirement and some attendees actually prefer wine or coffee – but she’s there for the dialogue.

Madalyn Bauer

Madalyn Bauer, daughter of Robert and Laurie Bauer, is JCA’s Kiwanis Club September Student of the Month. Bauer has been an honor roll student each of her previous six semesters at JCA and currently carMadalyn ries a 4.15 G.P.A. Baur She was the junior class student council president, and currently serves as the senior class president and executive board president. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Respect Life Club, student ambassadors, and the Hillzone.

In addition, Bauer is a three-time IHSA state qualifier in girls tennis for the Angels, and two-time sectional champion. She currently serves as the girls varsity tennis team captain.

She recently received a Rotary Leadership nominee, and has been a top JCA Spirit Raffle seller. Madalyn plans to attend either Ohio State University, the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Kansas University, or Alabama State, where she will study supply chain management with a minor in entrepreneurialship.

Bennet Smith

Bennet Smith, son of Jim and Kathy Smith, is JCA’s September Student of the Month for Rotary Club.

Smith is a member of National Honor Society, student ambassadors, Bennet Smith and International Thes-

pian Society and currently carries a 4.17 G.P.A. He is a member of the boys varsity tennis team at JCA, and also heavily involved in JCA’s drama club. He has appeared in numerous JCA drama productions including the fall play and spring musical over the last few years.

Smith also was selected to perform this past summer in the North Central College summer show. Bennett plans on attending the University of Illinois at Champaign, majoring in Theatre and Spanish. His future occupational or professional interests involve acting and singing.

She has also been a member of the varsity girls soccer and cross country teams since her freshman year, and currently serves as a captain in both programs. Blotnik has been active in Three Rivers Soccer Club and also has volunteered at Hopeful Tails Animal Rescue.

Blotnik plans on attending the University of Kentucky, Michigan State University, or Carthage College where she hopes to play soccer. She is planning on majoring in English Education with a Spanish minor, in hopes to one day become a high school or grade school teacher.

Diagnosing peripheral neuropathy is best done by electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS). Such testing often is not necessary, as your symptoms, your medical history and your doctor’s physical examination make the diagnosis likely.

Treatment of peripheral neuropathy begins with treating the underlying cause of the condition. For example, let’s say your neuropathy is related to heavy drinking. You should severely restrict, or better yet abstain, from alcohol. If your neuropathy is caused by hypothyroidism, treatment with replacement doses of thyroid hormone should help.

The other goal of treatment is to relieve symptoms. In particular, treatment targets pain caused by peripheral neuropathy.

Several medications can help. Gabapentin, an anticonvulsant medication, usually is effective. Tricyclic antidepressants also can effectively relieve pain.

Finally, while neuropathy itself causes pain, it (strangely enough) reduces sensitivity to pain caused by outside injuries. This makes you particularly vulnerable to foot damage. If you develop a cut or sore on your foot, without pain to alert you, you might not even notice the injury. Untreated, a simple wound may become severely infected. To prevent this, carefully check your feet every day and treat any foot injury immediately.

know people with diabetes often get neuropathy, but I’m not diabetic. What else can cause this condition? And what can I do about it?

Dear Reader: Neuropathy is a medical term that means nerve damage. The type of nerve damage people with diabetes get involves specific nerve fibers in all nerves, particularly the nerves that travel to the legs and feet.

(There are other conditions in which a single nerve leading to the legs and feet is pinched, causing pain. An example is what is often called a “slipped disk” or “herniated disk” in the lower part of the spine.)

The symptoms of peripheral neuropathy include numbness and tingling. Some cases cause burning, shooting or stabbing pain.

When the doctor does a physical examination and touches your feet and lower legs with something as light as a feather (like some cotton), you may not feel it. However, you will feel it if the cotton touches your skin in the thigh or elsewhere on the body.

You also may lose sensation to a pinprick in the lower legs and feet, but not the rest of you.

Diabetes is the most common cause of peripheral neuropathy. But neuropathy can result from other causes as well. These include: • Excessive alcohol intake.

• Hypothyroidism. In this condition, the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone.

• Amyloidosis, a disease in which an abnormal protein accumulates in the body.

• Vitamin deficiencies, particularly vitamin B1, B12 and folate deficiency.

• Infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

• Critical illness, particularly if you develop a severe inflammatory response to infection.

West leads a fourth-highest heart six, and East produces the king. What should declarer do?

The auction was natural, South’s two-no-trump rebid denying four hearts. Note that if you play twoover-one game-force, South’s rebid indicates 12-14 points or 18-19 points; there is no need to jump to three no-trump, because two no-trump is forcing. Then, with 18-19, if responder, as he does here, raises to three no-trump, opener nudges to four notrump to invite a slam. (Some pairs play that to rebid three no-trump indicates a 5-3-3-2 hand with 15-17 points that did not look right for a one-no-trump opening.)

South starts with six top tricks: two hearts (given trick one), two diamonds and two clubs. He can hope to get at least three winners from spades, but the defender with that ace will surely duck the first round of the suit. Then declarer will need two hand entries: one to knock out the spade ace and the other to cash the established winners. What are South’s two entries?

He has only the heart ace and diamond ace. So, to make the contract, South must not win the first trick.

Let’s assume East shifts to a diamond. Declarer wins on the board and leads the spade queen. When it holds, he crosses to the heart ace and drives out the spade ace, here ending with an overtrick.
