JOLIET – The Joliet City Council on Tuesday approved a preliminary agreement on the Houbolt Road bridge project with officials saying the city appeared to be protected from cost overruns.

The memorandum of understanding puts the cost of building the bridge, estimated at between $155 million and $175 million, on CenterPoint Properties. The state would pay up to $21 million for a new interchange at Interstate 80 and widening of Houbolt Road.

But Joliet would be responsible for overruns on the Houbolt Road widening and interchange if the costs exceeded $21 million.

City Manager Jim Hock said the state already had a consulting engineer analyze the project and estimated costs at about $18.8 million, leaving a cushion for potential contingency costs.

Hocks said “there’s been a lot of thought

and detail put into this process by the state to come up with that $21 million.”

The council voted, 7-0, for the memorandum of understanding despite questions raised at the Monday workshop meeting, which included requests by the Union Pacific railroad and Mid-West Truckers Association to slow down the process so they could get involved.

Councilman John Gerl said the state’s estimate has “a pretty heavy contingency.

We should feel pretty confident.”

Hock provided council members with a copy of cost estimates provided by the state. Those estimates were not available at the Monday workshop meeting when concerns were first expressed about the potential city share of overrun costs.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk called the memorandum of understanding “a great deal for the city.”

O’Dekirk noted that the project, barring any overruns, does not contain any costs for Joliet, while the city wants the bridge and interchange to relieve truck conges-

tion on local roads.

“The state of Illinois has come forward.

They basically have answered our call,” O’Dekirk said. “I think it would be a mistake for us to hold things up tonight with all due respect to Union Pacific.”

Representatives from Union Pacific, which runs the intermodal yard at CenterPoint Intermodal Center-Joliet, were at both the Monday and Tuesday meetings.

They, along with the Mid-West Truckers Association, expressed concern about language in the agreement that gives CenterPoint the ability to take over roads in the future if the county or city no longer want to manage them. They raised the prospect of CenterPoint taking over roads and charging tolls to trucks trying to get to and from the intermodal yard.

“Union Pacific is supportive of the Houbolt bridge project,” said Liisa Lawson Stark, assistant vice president for public affairs at Union Pacific. “The language does go beyond a simple agreement for the Houbolt Road bridge.”

Joliet D-204 board approves fiscal 2017 budget

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet High School District 204 board approved the fiscal 2017 budget that shows an overall surplus of about $1.3 million.

Questions about the budget came from several residents at Tuesday’s meeting, where it was approved by five board members. Board President Jeff Pierson and board member R. Dale Evans were absent.

The budget includes revenues of about $105.2 million and expenses of about $103.9 million.

One resident asked how the district’s budget – along with the one for Troy District 30-C – figure in his taxes. Ilandus Hampton, assistant superintendent for business services, said every district has a separate tax rate and explained the tax levy process.

money going that you’re paying in taxes?” the resident asked.

Board member Arlene Albert said whether people have children or not, their taxes go to the schools.

“That’s just how our system is set up in Illinois to support schools and it’s whether you have children or you don’t,” she said.

Another resident asked about getting access to the budget. Hampton said a copy of the budget can be given at the district’s administrative center, 300 Caterpillar Drive, or accessed on the district’s website.

According to Hampton’s Sept. 20 memo on the budget, because of uncertainty with the state, the revenue estimates were “very conservative.” District officials do not expect the overall surplus to change as administrators will seek to minimize added costs by reducing other line items, the memo states.

“We are trying to maintain the repairs, services, supplies and equipment budgets,” the memo stated.

District enrollment

Enrollment numbers at District 204 show a net increase of 118 students, according to a 10-day count report presented by Karla Guseman, assistant superintendent for educational services.

Total district enrollment – including West, Central and the alternate school – is at 6,417 and represents a steady upward trend since at least the 2012-13 school year, when enrollment was at 6,037.

The most increase was at West campus, which had 121 more students this year compared with last year. Total enrollment at the campus is at 3,261. At Central, enrollment was slightly down this year by 7 students, with total students at 3,095.

The figures do not include students housed in facilities other than the assigned campuses, according to Guseman’s report.

JOLIET – Nicole Alaimo of Joliet has two good reasons to beat her cancer.

She wants to walk down the aisle next August and wed Trzemyslaw “Shem” Wisniewski, the father of their 2-year-old daughter, Isabella. And then Alaimo wants to be present when – someday – Isabella takes her own trip

to the altar.

But Alaimo’s aunt, Patty D’Andrea of Plainfield, said Alaimo’s oncologist wants Alaimo to move up her wedding date. Last fall, Alaimo’s cancer – previously in remission – reappeared in her lungs, neck and back.

A clinical trial in Cleveland offered hope, until Alaimo was rejected after 10 tumors were found in her brain.

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Pets in Will County can expect to receive special care during disasters through a new AKC Pet Disaster Relief trailer.

Will County officials were able to acquire the trailer thanks to the national AKC Pet Disaster Relief program, local American Kennel Club dog clubs and dog lovers, according to a county news release.

Several organizations gave more than $22,000 in donations and grants for the purchase of the trailer, which will help create a safe, temporary home base for up to 65 pets immediately after a disaster is declared.

“We hope to never use it, but it’s there if we need it,” said Allison Anderson, Will County Emergency Management Agency planning and exercise officer.

On Tuesday, Harold Damron, Will County EMA director, along with Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr. and several representatives from local dog clubs – and their dogs – were at the Joliet Junior College Weitendorf Agricultural Education Center to unveil the trailer.

Damron said there’s a lot that occurs in a disaster and preparation is about not just the Will County EMA being prepared, but the public as well.

Accelerated construction discussed for public safety complex

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Will County officials are looking at opening the new Will County Public Safety Complex a few months earlier than originally planned.

Leigh McMillen, of Leopardo Construction, on Tuesday told the Will County Board’s Capital Improvements Committee that the construction schedule can be adjusted to have crews work 20 to 25 Saturdays.

McMillen explained that in the colder months when there is less daylight, it is more productive to incorporate some eight-hour Saturday shifts than do 10-hour shifts Monday through Friday. Workers began this week setting up the site on Laraway Road in Joliet.

2017 opening. The committee’s thinking is that ending the $30 million public safety complex construction cycle a few months earlier will help the county start construction sooner on the $195 million Will County Justice Center.

County Board Speaker Jim Moustis, R-Frankfort, said as construction costs rise, it’s crucial to not lose time and money on the much larger, more detailed courthouse.

Committee Chairwoman Ragan Freitag, R-Wilmington, said the com-

mittee looks at the many upcoming projects as one timeline. When one finishes, the next will start.

“We want to keep trucking along,” she said.

In the meantime, Jason Dwyer of Wight & Co. – the design firm for the justice center – also provided the committee with an update.

Dwyer said the firm is trying to design the complex to be as “future-flexible” as possible to accommodate potential changes in technology, such as an entirely paperless court system.

And though Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification has not been talked about much so far, Dwyer said silver or gold certification is certainly possible.

The proposed 10-floor building will be just under 370,000 square feet and will have the space for 38 courtrooms at full buildout. The eighth and ninth floors will be empty until expansion is

necessary. Elevators won’t even open on those floors, Dwyer said.

The building exterior would feature a large number of windows. County board member Jacqueline Traynere, D-Bolingbrook, asked whether the issue of birds flying into the structure – raised in March by the Will County Audubon Society – had been addressed.

Dwyer said Wight & Co. has been working on the “skin” of the building and found a special coating to go on the glass that will deter birds.

Will County Chief Judge Richard Schoenstedt invited the committee to visit Sept. 29 a mock-up courtroom that is being assembled at the existing Will County Courthouse. While much smaller than the courtrooms that will be in the new courthouse, the mockup is being outfitted with modern technology and design to give stakeholders an idea of what future courtrooms will feel like.

Former soldier who targeted armory sentenced to 30 years The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – A Chicago federal judge on Tuesday sentenced a former Illinois National Guard soldier and his cousin to prison for plotting to join Islamic State fighters and to attack the National Guard armory in Joliet.

Hasan Edmonds, 23, the former soldier, was sentenced in U.S. District Court to 30 years in prison. He had been, starting in 2011, with Golf Company 634th Brigade Support Battalion, which is based in Joliet. His cousin, Jonas Edmonds, 30, received a 21-year prison sentence.

cutors asked for the men, both residents of Aurora.

Hasan Edmonds devised a plan to travel to the Middle East while Jonas Edmonds attacked the National Guard armory in Joliet, according to prosecutors. The goal, prosecutors say, was to kill as many as 150 people at the facility.

Jonas Edmonds said he dropped Hasan Edmonds at the airport to travel to the Middle East to join Islamic State fighters. But Jonas Edmonds denied he would have attacked the Joliet facility.

“The person they’re trying to make me into, I’m not that person,” Edmonds told U.S. District Judge John Lee.

Defense attorney James Graham told the judge that Edmonds was a heavy smoker of marijuana and was boastful, but had no weapons and never would have gone through with the attack.

It was a characterization that was dismissed by Assistant U.S. Attorney Barry Jonas, who noted as he held up a duffel bag filled with National Guard uniforms that Edmonds planned to don the uniform to help him blend in and gain access to the Joliet Armory for the planned attack.

“Thank God the FBI was there to stop him,” Jonas said.

After dropping his cousin off at Chi-

cago’s Midway International Airport on March 25, 2015, Jonas Edmonds went to his cousin’s home and collected the uniforms, according to prosecutors. Hasan Edmonds, filings say, instructed Jonas to kill high-ranking officers first.

Agents arrested Hasan Edmonds at the airport and detained Jonas Edmonds at his home shortly thereafter.

Under plea agreements, Hasan Edmonds pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. Jonas Edmonds pleaded guilty to conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and lying to federal agents.

Former Joliet police officer arraigned on excessive force charge

bstanley@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – A former Joliet police officer was arraigned Tuesday on federal criminal charges for allegedly using excessive force against a woman while on duty four years ago.

Thomas O’Connor, 40, was indicted last week in U.S. District Court on a charge of violating the woman’s Fourth

Amendment protections while acting as a police officer. O’Connor, who is being represented by attorneys Michael Ettinger and Jeff Tomczak, pleaded not guilty. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison.

On Feb. 9, 2012, O’Connor was dispatched to Star Inn, 2219 W. Jefferson St., where Shantique Jackson and her former boyfriend were arguing.

Jackson told The Herald-News in 2012

that when she tried to kick her ex in the groin, O’Connor grabbed her, slammed her onto the hood of a car and punched her face 10 to 20 times.

She suffered two black eyes, a nasal fracture and bruises to her face and scalp.

O’Connor was fired from the police department four days after the incident and charged with aggravated battery, battery and official misconduct.

During a trial in June 2013, he testified he’d punched her as many times as necessary to gain control of a chaotic situation, according to Herald-News files.

A jury deliberated about two hours before finding O’Connor not guilty.

Also filed Tuesday was a protective order prohibiting the release of any videos or photographs being used as evidence, which lawyers said was not unusual.

Joliet City Center Partnership hires marketing manager

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Lauren Las started this week as marketing and events manager for the Joliet City Center Partnership.

Las replaces Sarah Strickland, who left in July, as the chief staff member for the City Center Partnership, which organizes events and promotes business in Lauren Las downtown Joliet.

“What I’m excited about is I’ve grown up in Joliet, and I’ve been working downtown for the last five years,” Las said. “It’s been great to see the events that the City Center Partnership has been able to bring down here.”

Las comes to the partnership from the Will-Grundy Medical Clinic, where she was director of development since December 2014. Before that, she was director of marketing and special events for the Joliet Slammers. She also has worked for the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office downtown.

Las’ experience and attitude impressed the partnership board, which

received hundreds of résumés for the position, Chairman Bryan Kopman said.

“We think she will do a wonderful job for the City Center Partnership and Joliet,” Kopman said.

Las said one of her top goals is to use social media and other marketing techniques to reach people who might not be coming to downtown events.

“I have a unique experience,” she said. “I’ve been doing marketing down here, and I think I know of ways to bring people down here. There are a lot of things to do. ... I want to make sure I can reach people who don’t come downtown very often.”

Las is the only full-time staffer for the partnership, which never replaced former Executive Director Pam Owens after she left in June 2015. The city reduced funding for the organization this year to fund the salary of an economic development director.

Richard Frederickson, who was interim executive director for a time after Owens left, continues to work for the partnership on a consultant’s contract.

The partnership also shares a staff member with the Will County Center for Economic Development.

JOLIET – A new downtown event Sept. 30 will combine blues, music history and craft beer.

Blues & Brews on 66 will run from 5 to 11 p.m.

Performers will include Lil’ Ed & the Blues Imperials, Shawn Holt & the Teardrops, Chicago Blues Angels, T-Bird Huck and Skip Griparis.

“It’s going to be music, but it’s also going to be the legacy of blues in Joliet,” said Richard Frederickson, consultant to the Joliet City Center Partnership, which is organizing the event.

T-Bird Huck will provide a history of the blues in Joliet through the evening.

The event is the latest designed to take advantage of the apparent market for opportunities to mingle downtown

in closed-off sections of Chicago Street.

“It represents a new kind of event for us in that it’s a bit like the chamber’s New Orleans North,” said Bryan Kopman, chairman of the City Center Partnership. “We’ve never charged for an event before.”

There will be a $5 general admission charge for Blues & Brews on 66.

Those who go can upgrade to a $35 VIP ticket that includes a craft beer tasting run as a fundraiser by the Joliet Park District Foundation.

The Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry built upon its New Orleans North success this summer by adding Fiesta En La Calle, a street festival held downtown earlier this month in conjunction with the Mexican Independence Day Parade. Both events charge admission.

The City Center Partnership hopes to see similar interest in Blues & Brews on 66.

10 Witness won’t get out of Texas

jail for Will County murder trial

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A witness prosecutors planned to call in an upcoming murder trial will not be released from a Texas jail to testify.

Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Colleen Griffin on Tuesday told Judge Carmen Goodman that an El Paso judge will not have Miguel Hurtado, 41, transferred back to Illinois. Hurtado is being held on a charge of delivery of drugs.

While Hurtado was an inmate in the Will County Jail in 2007 and 2008, Martin Elvis Gomez, 31, allegedly asked him to kill Gomez’s ex-girlfriend, Jessica Gustafson. Gomez was in jail on charges of murdering his former landlord, Joseph N. Salamie, and Gustafson’s testimony would have incriminated him.

Gomez, who is acting as his own attorney, is scheduled to face his second murder trial next week after his initial conviction was overturned by an appellate court. Griffin asked the judge whether prosecutors could use records of Hurtado’s testimony from the first trial since he is unable to testify this time.

“I’ll need specifics from [the original] transcripts what exactly will be said be-

fore I can decide whether or not it can be allowed in,” Goodman said.

Griffin said the transcripts will be submitted later this week.

On May 10, 2007, Salamie was discovered slain on his 10-acre farm on South Harlem Avenue, just north of Peotone Road, in Peotone Township. Gomez, who had once lived in a trailer on the farm, allegedly stabbed his former landlord 111 times, slit his throat and stole $1,200. Gomez was convicted of murder in 2011, but an appellate court decided he had not been given the proper admonishments about representing himself, which he did for his first trial, and ordered a new trial. He’s also serving a separate 19-year prison sentence for trying to hire Hurtado to kill Gustafson.

Gustafson initially told investigators Gomez was not involved in the slaying, but changed her story after police warned her about the attempts to hire a hit man. According to Griffin, Gustafson said she first lied to police because Gomez had told her he’d killed Salamie in self-defense.

Before proceedings finished Tuesday, Gomez told the judge he will continue to represent himself and does not want the public defender appointed to his case.

Council OKs McGuire as interim administrator

aschier@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – Crest Hill officials have approved an interim city administrator after Administrator Jim Elmquist resigned after just six months in the position.

The City Council voted unanimously Monday to name City Attorney and Assistant City Administrator Heather McGuire to the interim role, which she starts Wednesday.

“She’s highly qualified and she was the most logical choice for the position,” Mayor Ray Soliman said Tuesday.

McGuire has worked three years for the city in various roles and became assistant administrator during the contracted nationwide search that led to Elmquist’s hiring.

Soliman said that because municipal elections will be held in April; his position will be up for re-election; and city administrator contracts typically run concurrent to mayoral terms, Crest Hill officials will hold off on finding a replacement for Elmquist until spring.

In the meantime, McGuire said

Tuesday that she will have two immediate priorities as interim administrator. The first is a new public works building at 2101 N. Oakland Ave., Crest Hill’s former city hall site, on which she hopes the city will complete construction in the spring. Her second priority is a facility plan for upgrades to the water treatment plant at 1631 Gaylord Road.

McGuire will continue to serve as city attorney while holding the interim position.

As for her work with the city after the election, McGuire said she is interested in taking on the role of city administrator on a non-interim basis.

“I would love to be a city administrator for my career,” she said.

Soliman said he will use the next six months to evaluate McGuire in the role and take her performance into consideration if he is re-elected.

The mayor accepted Elmquist’s resignation letter Aug 24. Elmquist said Tuesday he is leaving Crest Hill to be closer to his family in Dodge County, Minnesota, and that he will be returning to the job of Dodge County administrator, which he held prior to coming to Crest Hill.

Utility Services was the sole bidder and its services will cost the village an average of $306,000 annually per water tower, Director of Public Works Tony Torres said.

CHANNAHON – In a short meeting Monday evening, the Channahon Village Board approved an intergovernmental agreement with the Channahon Fire Protection District to install solar-powered warning signals and an Opticom emergency vehicle preemption device on a village light pole at Center Street and Route 6.

Village Public Works Director Ed Dolezal said the district feels the need to place a warning light that will flash when the station at 24929 S. Center St. rolls out emergency vehicles onto Route 6. There is no traffic signal at the intersection.

The agreement was approved by all board members present. Trustee Sam Greco was absent.

Channahon residents will also be seeing road overlay projects in certain neighborhoods after trustees approved awarding a $278,821 road maintenance contract to low bidder D Construction.

Roads that could see patching, resurfacing or reconstruction include Misty Meadow Drive; Deer Path, Red Stable

and Cobble Stone lanes; and part of Riverbend Drive.

Trustees were told the low bidder came in under budget and under the village engineer’s estimate. The project is contingent on Illinois Department of Transportation approval.

The board also approved disallowing village trustees and the village clerk from participating in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund. The measure was a cost-saving one.

Channahon began allowing elected village officials to participate in the IMRF in 2005, but according to Village Administrator Tom Durkin, there is a trend in public bodies to disallow various public pension systems. The McHenry County Board recently terminated participation in the fund, he said, and Illinois Senate Bill 2701 disqualifies future county board candidates from participating in it.

The village president will be allowed to remain in the IMRF program, as the duties of the position “continue to remain varied and can expect to remain constant and possibly increase into the future.” The measure takes effect Sept.

District 201 presents final projected budget for 2016-17

Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – A special hearing was held Monday by the Minooka School District 201 Board of Education to present the final projected 2016-17 budget.

During the board’s regular meeting Monday, the projected budget was approved with a 5-0 vote, with members Curt Jebens and Doug Martin absent and member Vicki Allen voting via phone.

Superintendent Kris Monn said there were slight changes after a Sept.

7 budget workshop to the budget.

Key changes included the addition of

$80,000 in expenses to the technology department budget because of enrollment increases that warranted an additional cart of Chromebooks at Jones Elementary School.

Monn said there was a six-figure formula error in the special education private facility reimbursement, and its correction added $139,000 in revenue.

Monn stated in his summary that the resulting 2016-17 final budget shows revenues in operating funds as $33.6 million, against operating expenditures of $37.3 million, which yields about $977,000 in deficit. Operating funds include education, operations and maintenance, transportation, mu-

nicipal retirement, working cash and tort funds.

The total 2016-17 budget, including the six operating funds and the non-operating funds that include debt service, capital projects and life safety funds, has a projected revenue of $43 million against $43.9 million in expenditures, which comes out to a $964,000 deficit.

Monn created a pie chart to demonstrate the origin of the operating revenues and expenses for the district.

Operating revenue is 52.8 percent property taxes, 25.58 percent general state aid, 9.31 percent other state funds, 9.21 percent other local funds and 3.09 percent federal revenue.

Operating expenses are 78.3 percent personnel, 9.1 percent tuition and other objects, 6.8 percent supplies, 4.49 percent services, 1 percent capitalized equipment and 0.27 percent termination benefits and costs.

Monn said budget workshops have been ongoing for discussion of the future financial status of the district and ways to cut expenses. He also stated that he knows what the district has claimed and is entitled to from the state revenue-wise, but has not received final numbers as of yet. He has projected that on or around Sept. 30, he will be made aware of the final numbers the state will offer in aid.

2 charged with dealing heroin in Braidwood; bond set at $1 million

bstanley@shawmedia.com BRAIDWOOD – Two repeat drug offenders were arrested Monday for allegedly selling heroin.

Braidwood Police Chief Nick Ficarello said Timothy J. Sullivan, 27, and Kristin M. Farley, 26, had been under investigation for about five weeks for bringing

heroin from Cook County to the Braidwood and southern Will County area. Ficarello said the couple were arrested at their home in the 200 block of Walker Street in Timothy J. Braidwood.

“Farley had 5.5 grams Sullivan of heroin hidden on her

person when she was taken into custody,” Ficarello said.

Both suspects are being held on $1 million bond. They are charged with delivery of drugs and are being held in the Kristin M. Farley Will County jail.

According to jail re-

cords, Farley was arrested in May on charges of drug possession and delivery of lookalike narcotics. Sullivan pleaded guilty to marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia in a 2011 case.

Ficarello noted the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration assisted in the investigation, and other charges could be filed.

LOCAL BRIEFS BRAIDWOOD – The two canines used by the Will County Sheriff’s Office are keeping pace.

Roxy, a female Belgian Malinois, found heroin during a traffic stop Friday while Sem, a male Belgian Malinois, found heroin Luke Tarman and crystal meth Saturday night, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said.

About 10:30 a.m. Friday, deputies stopped a 2005 Nissan Altima after the driver allegedly failed to signal while exiting onto Route 113 from southbound Interstate 55 in Braidwood.

Hoffmeyer said Luke Tarman, 31, of the 500 block of South Franklin Street in Dwight, “appeared to be very nervous” when a deputy spoke with him. As the deputy checked Tarman’s license, Deputy Robert Denny and Roxy arrived.

Roxy signaled drugs were in the Nissan; deputies found 77 grams of heroin in Tarman’s pants pocket, Hoffmeyer said.

Tarman was arrested on a charge of delivery of drugs and booked into the Will County Jail.

WILMINGTON – A 22-year-old man has been charged with arson after an investigation into an August fire at a Wilmington apartment building.

Police Chief Phillip Arnold said Andrew Sterling, of Wilmington, has been charged with aggravated arson. Sterling was expected to be taken into custody Tuesday and will be held in the Will County Jail on a $100,000 bond.

The fire was reported about 3 p.m.

Aug. 2 at 120 N. Kankakee St., a building that includes attached apartments along Jackson Street, Arnold said.

“Sterling ... had been at the scene when first responders arrived and was acting suspiciously,” Arnold said.

Arnold said Sterling admitted to police he’d started the fire by lighting a cardboard box inside one of the units.

Sterling also alerted upstairs residents about the fire, Arnold said.

According to Will County court records, Sterling was arrested for disorderly conduct two years ago for writing a threatening message on a bathroom wall at Wilmington High School. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two years of probation.

Q. I was hit in an intersection by a car that ran a red light. The driver claims he had just come from having his brakes worked on and they failed as he tried to stop at the light.

What kind of lawyer do I need?

A. The short answer is: An Experienced Lawyer! But, what does that really mean? It means a lawyer who has handled not only many intersection collision cases, but one who is versed in product liability law as well.

The scenario above, if true, means that not only may the driver be a potential defendant, but also the brake installation company. Assuming the brakes were improperly installed, that company may actually be the most “at fault” defendant. Additionally, a potential defendant may be the brake manufacturer. If the brakes were, in fact, installed correctly, but failed to function properly, then this might be a product defect and the manufacturer might be at fault. In certain circumstances, there may be other potential defendants as well; for example, if the brakes were altered between the time of manufacture and

the time of distribution or if they were altered when installed, other parties may potentially be at fault. Or, of course, there might not be anything wrong with the brakes at all and it was simply driver’s error.

Finding a lawyer who practices in the area of law involved in your situation is first and foremost. This knowledge helps in identification of parties, preparing discovery of evidence, preparing witnesses, preparing exhibits and ultimately, preparing for trial. Though a law license allows a lawyer to practice in any area of the law once obtained, it doesn’t follow that the lawyer is skilled in the area you need. Divorce lawyers have more practical knowledge in family law than a corporate lawyer and vise versa.

Similarly, a personal injury lawyer knows the ins and outs of an injury case better than a criminal lawyer or an adoption lawyer.

Finding a lawyer that is skilled in the area of law you need will help you get the best results possible. Do not be afraid to ask the lawyer during the initial interview. She or he should be able to tell you, in general terms, their experience and that of the firm. It’s your injury and your case. You have a right to know!

A. I learned many years ago that the practice of law is both a profession and a business. Unfortunately many of the ads you see, whether on Television, Radio, or Billboards, are from lawyers or law firms who may care more about the money than their clients. My firm’s business plan for many years was to establish our firm’s name and reputation in the community, and let our clients know that we prefer to get new clients by word of mouth. Do a good job and care about the client, and they will send in family and friends. Because of this, we have only engaged in limited advertising over the years, mostly designed to let your clients know that we are still around and how they can find us.

Our firm handles Personal Injury cases which are decided by jury trials if not settled, and Workers’ Compensation claims. When picking a jury, we have been told by jurors, who are the conscience community, that they find the advertising at the least distasteful. So for the client who goes into court represented by the lawyer who advertises, there may be one strike against him, as even if the case has merit and significant injuries, the jurors will see the lawyer as greedy and may not want to participate in a large award.

My advice has been published several times in this column and remains the same. If you need a good lawyer, whether for a Personal Injury claim, a Workers’ Compensation claim, or for any other aspect of law, see if you can find a family member or friend who has had a good experience with a lawyer who practices to a good degree in that field. If so, that’s the lawyer you want to hire. If that does not work and you are bound and determined to hire a lawyer out of the blue, at least check a service called Martindale-Hubbell and make sure the lawyer has at least a CV, BV or AV, rating. There are many good firms that only have a CV or BV rating, because they haven’t been around long enough. Whether a CV or AV, the most important thing is the “V”, which means that the lawyers are trustworthy. You may be surprised how many lawyers do not have a rating with this company because they are not trustworthy enough to get the “V”. Our firm is proud of its AV rating, which we’ve had since 1991.

There are other rating services, and our firm enjoys top ratings from many of them, such as U.S. News and World Report, Super Lawyers, and Leading Lawyers Network, but I know of at least one law firm which has a rating from one such company that I would not send my dog to. Checking the internet, or even considering lawyers who advertise, remains a method for some people, as the lawyers wouldn’t advertise unless the ads worked to a degree. But finding that friend who has had a good experience with a lawyer is always the best bet.

All my client has to do to get a “Certified Copy of [her] Deed” is to complete the order form and send a check to the Pekin, Illinois address. The fee for this service is the sum of only $89.00. Please be advised as follows: Karen Stukel, our Will County Recorder of Deeds, will provide this service for $1.00 per page, and most deeds are only two pages! If you are a Senior Citizen, Karen will provide you with a copy of your deed for FREE! So, don’t be duped by this come-on for $89.00 or more to get a copy of your deed.

This is time of year for the roving repairmen.

A typical scam is: They ring your doorbell after they have given your chimney a free “examination” without your permission and tell you that you have cracks in the chimney that need immediate repair.

Don’t fall for this one! What they have probably done is put their ladder up against your chimney and given it a good shove. What they have done is trespassed on your property and caused damage to your home. If you can, without danger to yourself, get their license plate number and call the police. If you haven’t called the repairmen, don’t let them “fix” anything in or on your home.

A pet peeve of mine is the panic ad: “Emergency Legal Advice Seminar for Seniors”, “Don’t Let the State Take Your HOME if you need Nursing Home Care”; etc. These are ads of desperation - people desperate for clients and customers to whom they can sell their services and products.

In my opinion, reputable professionals do not have to resort to scare tactics, or have to offer people a free lunch or dinner in order to sell their services or wares. There is one of these seminars scheduled soon here in Joliet. Go and eat their food, but don’t sign anything until you consult with your regular, local attorney or financial planner.

I’m sorry, but not that sorry, for the people who got ripped off by Ponzi schemes.

While everyone around you is getting between 1%-4% interest on their investments and your cousin Marvin tells you he is getting 15% in an uninsured investment, don’t you think that’s a little odd??

As your Aunt Rose and I have repeatedly said, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

The last thing a senior citizen should do is put all their eggs in one basket – especially if that basket is uninsured.

Remember when the local Rooney Ponzi scheme hurt a lot of trusting people. Don’t you become one of the victims.

And finally, support your locally owned business and professionals.

Every dollar spent in our community is respent several times over before it leaves the area. Be local, buy local, and remember - if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Alaimo has battled aggressive breast cancer since two days before her grandmother’s death in 2012. After a double mastectomy and reconstruction surgery, she met her fiancé, had her first child and began planning her wedding. But last fall, the cancer showed up in multiple sites in her body, including her lungs, neck and back. She now has 10 tumors in her brain, too.

Triple negative breast cancer means the tumor doesn’t have any of the three types of receptors known to promote cancer growth, according to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Alaimo said she began chemotherapy immediately after the diagnosis and had a double mastectomy Sept. 28, 2012.

She then began the process of breast reconstruction and follow-ups with her oncologist.

“I was good until October of last year,” Alaimo said. “I went in for my normal six-month follow-up and they called me back right away saying, ‘Your tumor markers are off the wall.’ ” Alaimo had more chemotherapy, followed by radiation. Treatment appeared to be working until June, when cancer also was found in her hips, and then her brain – eight small tumors and two large ones.

She is back on chemotherapy and is exploring other clinical trial options through the University of Chicago.

Wisniewski is walking this journey with her every step of the way.

Alaimo met Wisniewski through a dating website in October 2013. They became engaged on Christmas Day 2014 when she was still in remission. From the start, Alaimo was candid about her chances of conceiving – slim to none – because of the type of chemotherapy she had received.

Isabella came along anyway. But Isabella had trouble with her lungs, and Alaimo lost her job. Once life settled down, Alaimo found a clerical job, which she worked until her health de-

“There was no way anyone could keep me on,” Alaimo said. “I practically live at the doctor’s and the hospital.”

Alaimo’s face lights up when she describes her dream wedding. A beautiful dress. Eight bridesmaids – Alaimo is one of six siblings. About 130 guests, including her many cousins. A service at the Cathedral of St. Raymond in Joliet.

A dinner at a banquet hall. A DJ. To raise money for the wedding and medical expenses, the family began a YouCaring page for Alaimo. In addition, an anonymous donor paid for a dress, D’Andrea said. The family also might have donations for flowers and a banquet hall.

“I just want to look like Cinderella,” Alaimo said.

But Alaimo’s recent fainting spells mean she can’t drive or be alone. Her mother, Darlene Baez of Joliet, cares for Alaimo and Isabella while Wisniewski is at work.

“On weekends, Shem takes over,” Baez said.

After putting in a full day on the job, Wisniewski comes home to cook, clean, care for Alaimo and take Isabella to gymnastics. Several members of his family also have battled cancer. He worries about Alaimo; he worries about Isabella and her future.

Wisniewski will be 30 on Oct. 1, and he has one birthday wish.

“I just want her to get better,” he tearfully choked out.

DOROTHY M. BLASKIE Dorothy M. Blaskie (nee Durkee), age 85, of Channahon, passed away peacefully, Monday, Sept. 19, 2016, with her family at her side.

Born in 1931 in Morris, she was the daughter of the late George and Helen (Broderick) Durkee. Her eight brothers, Edward, William, Robert, Donald, George, Erwin, James and John, also preceded her in death.

Dorothy was described as a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother. She was a precious soul who cared deeply about her family.

She will be remembered for her delicious pies.

The Chicago Police Department plans to hire more than 500 additional officers as it struggles to deal with a violent year full of killings and gun crimes, a city official told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson will announce the hires Wednesday, according to the official, who was briefed on the plan and spoke on the condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to discuss the plan ahead of the announcement.

The department has more than 12,000 officers and has not had a hiring push of this magnitude in years. The move is a departure from how Mayor Rahm Emanuel has handled staffing at the department during his tenure, resisting pressure to add to the department’s ranks and instead paying thousands of dollars in overtime. Emanuel spokesman Adam Collins declined to comment.

Foul play suspected in 4 Rockford house fire deaths

ROCKFORD – Authorities in Rockford said they suspect foul play in the deaths of three children and a woman in a northern Illinois house fire.

The Winnebago County Coroner’s Office said 27-yearold Keandra Austin, 9-year-old V’Angelo Totty, 6-year-old Keeryn Austin and 6-month-old Aliya Beasley-Austin died in the Saturday morning blaze.

Meetings on deer disease set for northern Ill. cities

LENA – Illinois wildlife management officials have scheduled meetings to provide information on chronic wasting disease in the white-tailed deer population as hunting season nears.

The high use of overtime payouts in a financially strapped city is something Emanuel and the police superintendent he hired when he took office in 2011, Garry McCarthy, forcefully defended, saying it was a less-expensive way to keep more cops on the street because hiring more would bring additional health care and pension costs.

But things have drastically changed. According to a recent Chicago Sun-Times report, there are fewer officers because police retirements have outpaced hiring by 975 officers.

Plus, the department that long has struggled with a reputation for police misconduct and brutality has been beset by criticisms and an erosion of trust in the wake of several fatal police shootings. Last year, the city was forced to release a video of a white officer fatally shooting black 17-year-old Laquan McDonald in 2014, sparking major protests as well as federal and local investigations.

The fallout over the video prompted Emanuel to fire McCarthy at the end of last year. Interim Superintendent John Escalante and his permanent replacement, Johnson, have struggled to bring the violence under control.

Illinois Department of Natural Resources meetings on CWD will be Oct. 18 at the Nash Recreation Center in Oregon and Oct. 19 at the Big Rock Park District Community Building in Big Rock.

Previously announced meetings will be Wednesday in Elizabeth, Sept. 27 in Freeport and Sept. 28 in Yorkville. All start at 7 p.m.

Rauner creates state bicentennial planning groups

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner is gearing up for the Land of Lincoln’s 200th birthday.

The Republican governor signed an executive order Tuesday creating an Illinois Bicentennial Commission and the Governor’s Office of the Illinois Bicentennial to plan festivities for 2018.

Rauner hired Stuart Layne as Illinois Bicentennial Executive.

Layne has extensive marketing experience, and a news release said he has expertise in research, branding, publicity, events and sponsor partnerships.

Illinois became the nation’s 21st state on Dec. 3, 1818.

Rauner said the bicentennial will be a chance to “celebrate Illinois’ contributions to the country and the world and plan for our next 200 years of innovation and achievement.”

Rauner’s action dissolved a 77-member state bicentennial commission created in 2014.

The new, 51-member group will include 40 gubernatorial appointees.

FBI looked into suspect in bombing 2 years ago The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – The FBI looked into New York bombing suspect Ahmad Khan Rahami two years ago – and came up with nothing alarming – after his father expressed concerns his son might be a terrorist, law enforcement officials said Tuesday.

During the inquiry, the father backed away from talk of terrorism and told investigators that he simply meant his son was hanging out with the wrong crowd, including gang members, and acting like a thug, the officials said.

In any case, the FBI checked its databases and other sources and closed the inquiry in a matter of weeks after seeing nothing tying Rahami to terrorism, three law enforcement officials said.

Also Tuesday, investigators disclosed that when Rahami was shot and captured, he had a notebook with him that contained extremist ramblings.

Rahami’s father, Mohammad Rahami, spoke with the FBI after the younger Rahami was charged in 2014 with stabbing his brother, according to the officials, who were not authorized to discuss the investigation and spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity. Rahami was not prosecuted in the stabbing; a grand jury declined to indict him.

Rahami’s father told reporters Tuesday outside the family’s fried-chicken restaurant in Elizabeth, New Jersey, that he called the FBI at the time because Rahami “was doing real bad,” having stabbed the brother and hit his mother.

The Republicans have been saying behind the scenes that they have put four Democratic state senators “on the bubble” – Tom Cullerton in DuPage County, Melinda Bush in Lake County, Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant in Will County and Gary Forby in deep southern Illinois.

Understandably, Senate President John Cullerton does not agree.

“If it wasn’t for Donald Trump maybe four would be on the bubble,” Cullerton told me the other day.

Cullerton claimed that the one-two punch of Trump and Gov. Bruce Rauner was hurting Republicans in contested districts everywhere. “Downstate, Trump’s popular,” he admitted, “But Rauner’s not.” In Forby’s heavily targeted district, Cullerton said, “Rauner’s hated down there.”

People in Forby’s district may have voted for Rauner two years ago, but, in reality, Cullerton claimed, “They were voting against Pat Quinn.” And the same goes, he said, for the contested neighboring open seat race currently held by retiring Sen. Dave Luechtefeld, R-Okawville. In the suburbs, Cullerton said, Rauner and Trump are both very unpopular, “Maybe Trump is a bit more unpopular,” he averred. But that still works to the Democrats’ advantage, Cullerton said.

VIEWS Rich Miller veys contested “swing” districts, Cullerton claimed that the governor’s poll numbers are “underwater everywhere.” And while Rauner “picked up a few points” after the governor and the General Assembly agreed to a stopgap budget in June, Rauner’s “job performance is still way underwater.”

Cullerton did not share any specific numbers, but what he said matches with what I’ve been hearing from others, including a few Republicans.

And that may also be part of the reason why Rauner continues to tell reporters that he isn’t much involved in legislative campaigns, even though GOP sources say he is involved.

Personally interviewing candidates to replace retired state Sen. Matt Murphy, R-Palatine, along with his former chief of staff as well as what appears to be his favorite adviser, John Tillman of the Illinois Policy Institute, was more than just a clue that his interest approaches granularity levels. Admitting to actually being heavily involved would result in news stories about how he’s strongly influencing specific local races, however.

The Republicans have been tying House Speaker Michael Madigan to Democrats in both chambers in their mail and in their TV ads, but the Senate President claimed “The Madigan stuff doesn’t rub off on Democratic candidates,” then backed up a bit to say he was only familiar with polling for senators and Senate candidates. “It doesn’t work on the senators,” he said.

But what if he’s wrong? What if Rauner’s vast wealth and his field operation manage to break through the extreme white noise of a presidential election and the Republicans do actually pick off several Democratic seats?

Well, $1 million spent on Chicago broadcast TV ads hasn’t managed to propel Rep. Michael McAuliffe, R-Chicago, over 50 percent, according to the Republicans’ own polling, and his margin has actually shrunk since July.

President Obama won McAuliffe’s district in 2012 by eight points, 53-45, according to data compiled by pollster We Ask America. Structural presidential year turnout like that is very difficult to overcome, and that includes those Senate races.

Still, I’ve been asking Democratic operatives lately what is keeping them awake at night, and they’ve all had about the same basic answer.

Targeted legislative races can often be decided by just a handful of votes.

Rep. Kate Cloonen, D-Kankakee, is the most extreme example of this, winning by an average of about 100 votes the last two cycles. Rep. Mike Smiddy, D-Hillsdale, won his 2014 race by 314 votes. Former Democratic Rep. Frank Mautino won his last race two years ago by 337 votes. The biggest potential problem is the unpredictability of Donald Trump’s supporters. Some Dems believe his support is actually higher than the polls are currently showing.

And in any given district, 500 (or even fewer) Trump backers who rarely vote and therefore haven’t been personally contacted much, if at all, by either side could decide to head to the polls on election day and then continue supporting Republican candidates straight down the ticket and create some upsets.

Rauner’s unprecedented campaign spending and his emphasis on a ground game along with Trump’s huge popularity with white working-class voters (who dominate all of the Democrats’ contested Downstate districts) are making this presidential cycle extremely unusual and, to an extent, unpredictable. So no matter what Cullerton says, the Democrats are worried that they may actually lose some seats.

SPRINGFIELD – The J-Town adult basketball team of Joliet last weekend won the Illinois Senior Olympics qualifying tournament at the Springfield YMCA. J-Town finished 4-0 and now is qualified to participate in the National Senior Olympics Tournament that will be played in June of 2017 at Birmingham, Alabama.

The J-Town roster consists of Marvin Evans, Thomas L. Jones, Ken Mitchell, Lennell Pierce, Rick Sowa, Randy Stamps and Luther Woods. Evans, Jones, Pierce, Sowa and Stamps are Joliet residents. Mitchell is from Joliet and moved to Indianapolis about five years ago. Woods is from East St. Louis.

While JCA (11-7-1, 2-1) received big efforts from Emily Holbrook (11 kills, 12 digs), Emmie Naal (seven kills, eight digs), Taylor Zurliene (five kills), Sarah Nahas (27 assists, three aces) and Morgan Leuszler (two block kills), it also received a very pleasant surprise.

Freshman middle hitter Bella Ray made her varsity debut in a impressive fashion by getting six block kills against a talented group of hitters that the Redwings (14-1, 2-0) unleashed.

“We brought freshman Bella Ray up and it was a pretty big match to step into,” Scheibe said. “But she got some nice blocks for us and brings some added height that we need very badly. She did a real nice job up there. She has dreamed about being an Angel volleyball player since she was in fourth or fifth grade since she’d been coming to my camps.”

“I was so nervous,” Ray said. “I finally started playing in the second set since I got all of my jitters out in the first set. I think everyone was nervous in the first set because we were playing against Benet. But in the second set we started playing like we could and it showed.

“Everyone had a different mindset in the second set. We just wanted to win so bad, so we made it happen. Being a freshman on the court was very overwhelming but it ended up OK, I guess.

I like how everyone is so encouraging and no one is ever mean or discouraging.”

In the final set, Benet held several four-point leads before moving in front

by the largest margin of that game at 23-18 after an ace serve. But the Angels answered with kills from Holbrook around a Leuszler ace to make it 23-21.

After a long hit moved the Redwings to match point, JCA responded with a block and a kill before Nahas served up two aces to give the hosts a 25-24 advantage. Holbrook got a kill to make it 26-26 and Naal did the same to make the score 27-27 before Benet ended things with a kill and a ball into the net.

JCA jumped out to a 13-4 lead in the middle set and eventually led by as many as 12 points in a complete turnaround from the opener, when the Redwings put together runs of 11-0 and 10-0, thanks to numerous kills from Lillian Johnson.

JOLIET – The Joliet Central girls volleyball team had a difficult evening Tuesday, dropping a 25-11, 25-15 decision to Southwest Prairie foe Oswego East.

In the first set, Central won the initial point, but East scored the next five to go up 5-1. Central fought back to get within 8-4 but could not get any closer, as too many unforced errors cost the Steelmen.

The five-point run was the best the Wolves could put together as Central fought to the end but couldn’t find a rhythm and never put a streak of its own together.

“We had to bring up a sophomore to fill in and start tonight, so that sort of threw us off at the beginning,” Central coach Suzzanne Bambule said.

“We have to really work hard on defense and when we play the top teams, our service game has to be tiptop. Our passing and serving we can control. We didn’t do that well in the first game, but our team did play better in the second game.”

The second game saw the same start with a 1-0 Central lead, but the Steelmen were more in synch. The game went back and forth, including five ties early. Central was only down 11-9, but East went on an 11-0 run to go up 22-9.

Central responded with six consecutive points to make it 22-15, but that was as close as the Steelmen would come.

“After the first game, we had a good talk between games with the coaches and we responded pretty well,” Central’s junior Kierra Cartwright said.

“We are getting better and we just need to keep going in this direction.

We are young and learning each practice and each match.”

Brenna Rande, one of only four seniors on the Central roster, was happy with the attitude and direction.

“Too many unforced errors to start tonight,” Rande said. “We don’t have that varsity experience as a team because we are so young. We are not a big hitting team, so we need to play smart and hit the holes on the opponents’ defense. At times we did that really well tonight, especially in the second game. We fought in the second game and even after they (Wolves) went on that run, we didn’t quit.”

Even in the loss, Bambule was not disappointed in the effort.

“We are really working on the communication on the floor,” she said.

“This team listens, they have the desire. But when we get on the floor,

we have the learn to stay focused from beginning to end and not lose confidence when something doesn’t go our way.”

Oswego East coach Adam Thurlwell likes the direction the Wolves are going after a shaky start to the season.

“We have talent, but we need to find that chemistry,” Thurlwell said.

“It’s coming, but we still have a long way to go. We are really looking for that consistency from match to match.

The work ethic is there.”

Oswego East visit to Plainfield North is huge in SPC race VIEWS Dick Goss The big news last weekend in the Southwest Prairie Conference – and throughout the entire area, for that matter – was Joliet Central’s football team ending its losing streak with a thrilling 38-35 victory over Plainfield Central.

Other interesting results that otherwise would have earned more attention slipped into the background.

Foremost on that list, perhaps, was Plainfield North’s stunning 61-22 victory at Minooka in what on paper appeared to be a near-tossup.

North began the season as the Herald-News’ No. 3-ranked large school, but the Tigers fell a few notches after being shut out by Oswego, 12-0, in Week 2. After last week, however, it may be time to push North back up in the rankings.

The Tigers also beat Romeoville, 626, in Week 3, so they have scored 123 points in the last two games.

A huge test is on the horizon Friday night as North hosts Oswego East, which features Iowa-bound running back Ivory Kelly-Martin and quarterback Jaylon Banks, also a superb athlete.

To date, the Wolves and five-time defending champion Oswego are the top dogs in the SPC, both at 4-0. If one of the eight Joliet area schools in the 10-team league is destined to challenge for the conference title, Plainfield North (3-1) is the popular choice at this juncture.

First, however, the Tigers must take down Oswego East. There never are guarantees in the SPC, but if North can win Friday, the Tigers stand a chance of running the table and finishing 8-1.

“No doubt they (Wolves) have been scoring a lot of points and have some good weapons,” North coach Tim Kane said. “It will be a good challenge and good matchup. We’re looking forward to playing in front of our home fans.”

All Oswego East has done to date is outscore its four opponents on average, 52.0 to 11.8. No one has come closer to the Wolves than Plainfield South, which fell, 40-19, last week.

North having scored 123 points over the last two weeks could mean a lot, or maybe not.

“We can’t think about the Minooka game, that’s in the past,” Kane

said. “So is the Oswego game. We obviously did not play well against Oswego, and they beat us that week.

We did not do some things on either side of the ball that we would have liked to do.

“You always learn, and we learned quite a bit from the Oswego game – both the players and the coaches. How we played the last two weeks shows that.”

A strategic move Kane employed against Minooka was using one of his best athletes, cornerback Kevin Block, on the defensive side of the ball almost exclusively.

“Kevin has been alternating with Brady Miller at quarterback all year,” Kane said. “Last week he played all defense because Minooka has that real good receiver (Isaiah Hill), and we wanted Kevin on him.”

Miller responded to the additional playing time by passing for 241 yards and six touchdowns. He led the Tigers to a 46-point first half.

Still, Oswego will be preparing this week to see Block calling signals as well.

“Brady (Miller) made some really good throws last week,” Kane said.

“He went out and executed our game plan and played with high efficiency. (Running backs) Tyler Hoosman and Carlos Baggett both have run well and picked up yards this season. Now we have to make sure we’re more balanced.

“The thing about Kevin (Block), he’s fast and tough. He gives an opponent something different to prepare for. He can run and throws the ball well, too. He can do other things than just run the ball, which he can do well.”

On the defensive side of the ball, the Tigers boast team speed and significant experience as nine starters returned from last season.

“We have played pretty well defensively most of the year,” Kane said. “Each game we make a few mistakes. But our experience allows us to play fast and make little changes that can make a difference in the course of a game.”

Regardless of Friday’s outcome, the two Oswego schools will tangle in Week 6, on Sept. 30 at Oswego East. So in another 10 days, we should have a better idea where the SPC race is headed.

Plainfield North is out to prove it belongs in the discussion.

The Associated Press PHILADELPHIA – Odubel Herrera kept up his hitting surge with a homer among his three hits and drove in three runs as the Philadelphia Phillies held off a late White Sox rally in a 7-6 win Tuesday night.

Tommy Joseph and Roman Quinn added two hits apiece and combined to drive in three runs for the Phillies.

Herrera, who hits between Joseph and Quinn in the lineup, is 15 for 28 in his past seven games.

Melky Cabrera hit a three-run home run for the Sox, who have lost four straight. Struggling veteran James Shields (5-18), winless since July 26, allowed six earned runs and nine hits in 51/3 innings.

Trailing 7-3 in the ninth, the Sox pulled within one on a two-out wild pitch and a two-run double from Adam Eaton. However, Michael Mariot came on and got Tim Anderson to ground out to short to end the game and pick up his first career save.

Before the ninth, the Sox’s big inning came in the third. With two outs and nobody on, Anderson doubled and Jose Abreu walked before Cabrera lined a 1-1 pitch just inside the right-field foul pole for his 12th home run of the year, putting the Sox ahead, 3-2.

During their four-game losing streak, the Sox have been outscored 28-11.

Jake Thompson (3-5) gave up three runs and four hits over five innings. The rookie right-hander has won his past two starts and has a 2.99 ERA over his past five appearances.

CHICAGO – Jon Lester overcame an injury scare to throw seven strong innings, Anthony Rizzo drove in three runs and the Cubs moved closer to securing the NL’s best record with a 6-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night.

Lester (18-4) extended his scoreless streak to 21 innings before Jose Peraza’s RBI triple in the fifth. He allowed six hits, struck out five, walked none and added an RBI double. Lester stayed in after Joey Votto’s comebacker in the sixth left him with a welt on the wrist of his glove hand.

Rizzo had a two-run single in a fourrun fourth and a run-scoring single in the sixth to give him 104 RBIs. The Cubs’ 96th win reduced their magic number to three over Washington for clinching home-field advantage throughout the NL

playoffs.

The Cubs, who wrapped up the NL Central last week, are trying to find the right balance of staying sharp while getting rest and avoiding injury before the postseason. That’s why the crowd gasped and the trainer and manager Joe Maddon quickly ran out of the dugout after Lester was struck by Votto’s hard-hit ball.

TV replays showed the welt, but the lefty stayed in and retired six of his final seven batters before leaving after 97 pitches. Lester won his ninth straight decision and dropped his ERA to 2.36, helping his Cy Young Award candidacy.

After David Ross singled with two outs in the second, Lester lined a fastball off Josh Smith (3-2) into the gap in right-center. The 39-year-old Ross, who has said he’s retiring at the end of the season, lumbered home from first and belly-flopped into home without a throw to put the Cubs ahead to stay.

Bears QB Cutler has sprained right thumb

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com LAKE FOREST – Jay Cutler has a sprained right thumb that doesn’t need surgery right now, but John Fox wouldn’t rule it out entirely when the Bears’ head coach met the media Tuesday at Halas Hall. Fox also wouldn’t say whether Cutler will miss Sunday night’s game in Dallas.

“We’ll just take it day to day, and Brian Hoyer stepped in, and I thought did a pretty good job,” Fox said. “We’ll evaluate that tomorrow and split up practice as need be.”

Adam Jahns of the Chicago SunTimes reported that Cutler originally suffered ligament damage in the throwing thumb against the Texans in Week 1. He played through it and then aggravated the injury when he was stripsacked against the Eagles in the third quarter on Monday night.

Cutler stayed in the game and threw an interception on the next drive, his final play of the 29-14 loss. Cutler said after the game that he had trouble gripping the ball and “couldn’t get as much as I wanted” on the pass that floated to Eagles linebacker Nigel Bradham.

Fox wouldn’t say whether Cutler injured his thumb further in Houston, referring to the injury he suffered in 2011, which required surgery.

“I think Jay probably originally hurt his thumb five years ago. But that’d be no, he practiced every play of practice last week,” he said, adding that the thumb “didn’t appear” to affect Cutler in practice.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the Bears are “preparing for a lengthy absence” for Cutler.

“It’s hard for me to give timelines,” Fox said. “We’ll evaluate tomorrow.

We’ve got practice tomorrow, we’re on a short week already. If Jay’s ready to do it, fine. If not, we’ll go with Brian Hoyer.”

The Bears will head into Dallas with an 0-2 record. In relief on Monday night, Hoyer completed 9-of-12 passes for 78 yards against Philadelphia. For Houston last season, Hoyer threw 19 touchdowns and seven picks, but tossed four picks in a playoff loss. The 30-yearold, eighth-year veteran has 26 career starts.

Cutler has missed at least one game in each of his last six seasons. He was wearing a cast on his right hand on

Monday night and missed the final six games of the 2011 season when he last injured his right thumb.

ILB Danny Trevathan having surgery on thumb; Lamarr Houston has torn ACL: In

addition to Cutler, who could miss time with a sprained thumb, the Bears may be without five other starter-caliber players when they travel to Dallas to play the Cowboys in Week 3.

Starting Bears inside linebacker Danny Trevathan has a thumb sprain that will require surgery on Wednesday morning, Fox said, adding that the injury is not expected to be season-ending. Jonathan Anderson would be “next man up” to replace Trevathan, but the Bears could also consider fourth-round rookie Nick Kwiatkoski, who has yet to be active.

According to mulitple reports, Lamarr Houston tore his ACL in the loss.

Houston hasn’t been a starter, but he did lead the Bears in sacks last season and the team is already without Pernell McPhee at outside linebacker. Sam Acho would get more reps with Houston out of the lineup, and the Bears also could use Christian Jones at outside ’backer.

Houston counts $6.99 million against

the team’s cap next year, so it’s fair to wonder whether Phil Emery’s big freeagent signing from 2014 has played his final game as a Bear.

Eddie Goldman has a high ankle sprain, according to the Chicago Tribune, which is expected to keep him out four weeks. He was carted off the field Monday night after being very active in the trenches. Will Sutton is the team’s backup nose tackle.

Ka’Deem Carey has an injured hamstring. Rookie Jordan Howard had 22 yards on three carries in his first NFL action on Monday night.

Bryce Callahan and Adrian Amos are both in the concussion protocol.

Chris Prosinski, who replaced Amos, has a calf contusion. Rookie safety Deon Bush was inactive for the first two games and DeAndre Houston-Carson has been playing special teams.

Sherrick McManis replaced Callahan at the nickel corner position. The Bears may get Kyle Fuller back next week, which could affect some shuffling at the position.

Following a season opener during which no Bears suffered any injuries, they snowballed Monday, adding to a disappointing 0-2 start.

Apple cake signals fall Resist urge to dress up simple seasonal dessert

My grandmother, who lived with us when I was growing up, had a serious sweet tooth and would bake something almost every day.

In the spring, it was coconut cream pie. In the summer, homemade ice cream and peach pie. And during fall apple season, she would bake this very simple apple cake and serve it warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

My mother and I loved this cake – it’s so simple, yet so satisfying and comforting – and never thought to write it down before my grandmother died. For years, we searched her recipe cards to no avail until last summer when I was doing research for a new cookbook called “Steak and Cake.”

Happily, we came across a recipe

card that looked like it might be the thing. I made the cake immediately, and as my mother and I tasted it, we finally knew we had found the one.

Sometimes the memory outshines the reality. But in this cake, it did not.

As I was testing recipes for the cookbook, I added my grandmother’s apple cake to 10 other cakes, some classic and some new-fangled, for a neighborhood tasting – the cookbook writer’s version of a “cake walk.”

Everyone gravitated toward my grandmother’s cake.

I had to stop myself from adding a pinch of salt and a teaspoon of vanilla to the batter as I rarely make a cake without it, but I decided I should preserve this cake just the way my grandmother made it.

The batter is very stiff – like cookie dough – before you add the apples, but rest assured as soon as the apples

give up their juice, the batter loosens and will bake beautifully.

Grandmother Odom’s Apple Cake Start to finish: 90 minutes Servings: 8-12

4 generous cups raw apples, peeled and cut coarse (about 5 large Granny Smith apples) 2 cups granulated white sugar 1/2 cup vegetable oil such as Crisco 2 large eggs 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 2 teaspoons baking soda 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup chopped toasted walnuts Confectioner’s sugar for decorating Cooking spray Heat the oven to 350 degrees F. Peel and chop apples and set aside. Mean-

while, beat together sugar and oil and add eggs one at a time until creamy.

Whisk together flour, cinnamon and soda.

Add dry mixture to sugar, oil and eggs by thirds.

Remove from stand mixer and fold in chopped apples. Let sit for 5 minutes, stir well and add walnuts. Mix well.

Pour batter into prepared pan – I prefer Baker’s Joy or another brand of spray coating with flour – and place on a sheet pan to bake.

Bake 60-65 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool in the pan 10 minutes, then invert on a cake cooling rack. Dust top with confectioner’s sugar if desired.

34 More companies reward healthy behavior Dear Dr. K: My employer has started offering employees financial rewards for weight loss. I’m skeptical. Does this kind of financial incentive really work?

Dear Reader: Offering financial incentives to employees for making healthy lifestyle changes is increasingly common.

These days, nearly 80 percent of large employers do it. There are many ways to offer incentives, and doctors and economists still are learning what works best.

Some experiments have been successful.

For example, employees at two large companies randomly were selected to receive up to $800 to quit smoking. They were three times more likely to quit than employees encouraged to quit but not given money for doing so.

Other experiments have not worked as well. Employees in another company were selected at random to receive a bonus of $550 to lose weight. They were no more successful than employees not offered a bonus.

The timing of when the bonus is given appears to affect behavioral change.

People who receive payments separately (not lumped in with their paycheck) and repeatedly (every month rather than at the end of the trial period) are more responsive to incentives.

There is some evidence incentives work better when offered to groups of people, rather than on an individual basis. These programs usually involve financial incentives that are tied to the group’s success.

When an individual fails to meet his or her personal goal, it reduces the bonus all other members of the group will receive. If you fail to meet your personal goal, the others in the group suffer a financial hit – and they will know you are the reason for it.

It’s a powerful incentive not to miss your personal goal.

Even if it turns out financial incentives generally do help people to adopt a healthy lifestyle, it remains to be seen how lasting this change in behavior will be. And it also remains unclear whether the savings to employers from reduced medical expenses due to healthier lifestyles will be greater than the money spent on the incentives themselves.

But as far as I’m concerned, it’s worth a look. Our lives are filled with incentives and disincentives designed to encourage actions that benefit both us and the people around us. From traffic lights to auto insurance premiums that drop if we avoid accidents or traffic tickets, our society tries to channel our behavior. I see nothing wrong with it – if it works.

The bidding featured two relatively modern conventions. First, West made a Snapdragon Double, which showed length (five or six cards) in the unbid suit (clubs) and tolerance for partner’s suit (typically honor doubleton; but maybe three low if the doubler’s suit is particularly strong; or at a real pinch, even a low doubleton). North’s spade raise guaranteed four-card support, because with only three spades he would have made a Support Redouble.

When East competed with three clubs, South bid three spades because he knew his side had a nine-card fit.

At first glance, South will lose only two hearts and two clubs. But the defenders have an extra trick up their sleeves. West leads the club ace. Since the queen is on the board, East signals count, playing the eight, starting a high-low (echo) with an even number. West cashes the club king, then shifts to the heart queen, East encouraging with his seven. East takes the second heart and returns a low heart. When West ruffs with the spade jack, the uppercut promotes a trump trick for East.
