Lincolnshire Country Club – Crete Country clubs in America originated in the 1890s as elite, family-oriented havens usually emphasizing golf, but they have never been just about golf or even sports.

Clubs fostered sportsmanship, appropriate deportment, and social development while also providing openings for exercise.

A “golden age” of country clubs, which is a loosely defined period, began in the first few decades of the 20th century and lasted until the Great Depression of the 1930s. The number of clubs grew again in the prosperous decades after World War II and with the continuing suburban boom of the late 20th century.

As clubs proliferated and served a greater variety of members, they reflected the changing culture and economic importance of leisure activities in the 20th and early 21st centuries.

The “country club movement,” as some historians termed it, began in the 1890s as recreational golf swept the country. During the economic depression of the 1890s, many privileged men turned to golf as a cheaper alternative to yachting, polo and hunting.

With suburbanization in the early 20th century, and an increasing emphasis on leisure, sporting activities also gained popularity among the middle class. It has been noted that by some social commentators that the desire of women to play sports as the most significant factor in the growth of country clubs, which, unlike earlier men’s clubs, seemed more family-oriented. It can be noted that the forerunners of the modern country club included men’s city clubs, union leagues, urban athletic clubs, and resort casinos (clubhouses).

Country clubs quickly became popular in counties surrounding Chicago as more people took up golf, tennis and swimming and desired more places to socialize. Locals were introduced to golf while traveling, particularly to France and Great Britain, and returned stateside to establish clubs.

Most country club founders were heads of families who desired a conveniently located family club where they and their family could enjoy respite from the city.

The founding of some early clubs followed the pattern of leasing or purchasing country estates or farms and adapting the existing residences for new uses. In other instances, vacant land, often farmland, was purchased for new development.

There was a fear that organized sports drew people away from church and prompted people to engage in sinful activities such as gambling and drinking.

In Illinois, as in other states, though, such restrictions became unpopular and not all communities enforced these laws locally.

Before 1920, and the prohibition of alcohol, some clubs banned drinking for religious reasons while others did so to preserve the family atmosphere that made these clubs different from men’s clubs or even many single-sport clubs. Membership categories even in the earliest years included both individual and family categories, and some clubs offered junior as well as social-only memberships.

clubs also provided spaces for socializing and entertainment. Theaters, ballrooms, dining rooms, men’s grille rooms, ladies’ parlors and tea rooms, a variety of sitting rooms, porches and verandas offered ample opportunity for members to socialize.

In Will County during the 1920s, a group of investors led by Sam Homan purchased nearly 1,200 acres of farmland in Crete for a unique land development.

The land development was to include a country club, four golf courses, tennis courts, trap shooting pits, a swimming pool, ten miles of bridle path, a large lake, and parcels of land for summer homes.

The developers named the adventure Lincolnshire to link it to the racetrack Lincoln Fields being constructed south of town. Lincolnshire Country Club celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2002.

Since its beginning in 1927, the country club, with its scenic beauty and wooded and wetland areas, has been an important part of the community of Crete.

Families enjoy free food, clothes, services at Sharefest

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Susan Sterling rifled through a pile of clothes at Sharefest in New Lenox to find some items for her grandson.

Sterling, of Joliet, was one of many who came to Sharefest’s main event Saturday, which offered more than free clothes, but also food, books, toys, lectures, health screenings and legal advice.

Sterling said she has low income.

“I’m just grateful the community has donated to people less fortunate,” she said.

Gary Cheney, of New Lenox, founded Sharefest in 2007, and it grew from a one-day event to a series of service projects, giveaways and resource opportunities in Will County.

While families in need were finding clothes and food at the event at Spencer Crossing Intermediate School, 1711 S. Spencer Road, volunteers were performing cleaning and fixing projects.

“We got guys out there doing service projects right now throughout the community,” Cheney said.

Throughout September, Sharefest and its partner organizations have run events such as Recyclepalooza, a 9/11 Patriot Day ceremony and the Job and Resource Fair. All of them led up to Saturday’s main event, which helped hundreds of families.

Cheney said September is kind of a sanctified month for Sharefest, when volunteers “bring all of it together.”

Sharefest also does projects throughout the year. Between October and November, Sharefest volunteers are scheduled to help with Solution to Pollution events coordinated by Helpers of Mother Earth.

According to Sharefest’s website, the organization partners with more than 160 others. Some of the partners and sponsors include Trinity Services, New Life Church and Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center.

“The common link that we have is love for our neighbor,” Cheney said.

Raynah Wilson, of Frankfort, was at Sharefest with her sister and greatniece. All three looked at books. Wilson said her great-niece is learning to read.

“It’s so much to pick from,” said Wilson, who was at Sharefest for the first time.

Shaw Media correspondent LOCKPORT – Shane Marquardt, 14, of Manhattan got out of his wheelchair and climbed onto a pillow inflatable where his mother, Michelle Marquardt, waited.

Shane, born with cerebral palsy and blind, smiled and laughed as he and his mother had the entire inflatable pillow to themselves to bounce and play.

On Sunday, 750 special-needs kids, parents and siblings were able to enjoy a free day at Siegel’s Cottonwood Farm’s pumpkin farm in Lockport, with the help of the Siegel family and Small Steps Therapy owner Valerie Miller.

Miller said she heard of carnivals that allowed a day for special-needs families and asked the Siegel family if they would be willing to allow those families in the area to come in and enjoy a low-key day at the farm.

Siegel’s co-owner Paul Siegel said the event was perfect for opening weekend.

“Our opening weekend tends to be a slower weekend, so the families can come in when there is a low crowd and the kids won’t be overwhelmed,” Siegel said.

Siegel said he just had an experience where his grandson was born at

“It’s nice to have the awareness of the special-needs day so the workers are more aware and sensitive to our situation, and realize why I have to bring his wheelchair into certain areas,” Michelle said.

Brent Marquardt agreed with his wife that it’s hard to come to a place such as Siegel’s on a typical day.

“People don’t understand the different way of life when you have a child with special needs,” he said.

Miller said she has witnessed days like Sunday turn into support groups because so many special-needs families are in one spot, which creates a place for kids to make friendships with children who share their struggles.

The event is in honor of Army Pfc. Aaron Toppen, who was one of five American soldiers killed in a June 2014 friendly-fire airstrike in southern Afghanistan. This event, along with the Pfc. Aaron Toppen Memorial Motorcycle Run, benefits Aaron various charities in Toppen Toppen’s memory.

Joliet D-204 action team to focus on culturally responsive education, diversity

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – An action team at Joliet Township High School District 204 will help develop plans relating to culturally responsive education and diversity among faculty and administration.

The action team will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, starting this week, at the district administrative center, 300 Caterpillar Drive, Joliet. The district has looked for parents, district staff and community members to join the team, which will develop plans as part of a new strategy that came out of a Strategic Plan Thorough Renewal event Aug. 26 and 27. Team members are required to attend all meetings scheduled. The action team kickoff took place last Tuesday.

During the Strategic Plan Thorough Renewal event, members of a strategic planning team carefully ex-

amined and revised the district’s existing strategic plan, according to a district news release.

The strategic plan is a comprehensive document that identifies the district’s mission, objectives, strategies, parameters and beliefs, according to the district’s website. It is a living document used to improve the schools.

Each strategy contains a set of action plans with specific steps written to accomplish the district’s objectives.

“It’s how we operate on a day-today basis,” said Cheryl McCarthy, the district’s superintendent.

The action team members will develop plans for a new strategy, which states: “We will, in partnership with families and community, develop and implement plans to deliver a culturally responsive educational experience and expand the diversity of our faculty and administration in order to close the achievement gap,” according to the district.

District officials brought in attorneys over the summer to examine the district’s diversity among staff and its hiring practices, after concerns were raised by residents at previous Board of Education meetings.

McCarthy said at the time the results from the attorneys’ audit could be used for strategic planning sessions in August.

Plainfield man dies, Joliet woman charged after motorcycle crash

JOLIET – A Plainfield motorcyclist died Sunday after he was involved in a crash.

Jaime Mendez Jr., 36, was pronounced dead at 12:59 a.m. at the emergency room of Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, the Will County Coroner’s Office said. Mendez was the driver of a motorcycle traveling north on Route 59 at Country Glen Court in Joliet, and was struck by another vehicle, according to the coroner’s office.

Kathy A. Molitor, 58, of the 4600 block of Lalique Court in Joliet, was arrested on charges of aggravated driving under the influence, driving under the influence of alcohol and making an improper left turn, according to Joliet Chief of Police Brian Benton and Will County jail records.

1 airlifted, Route 47 closed after motorcycle crash in rural Mazon

The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office was investigating a crash Sunday evening involving multiple motorcycles in the rural Mazon area. The incident occurred at Route 47 and Sucker Road, Sheriff Kevin Callahan said.

The crash happened when two motorcyclists tried to avoid a third motorcycle that was stopped to make a turn, Callahan said in a statement. A medical helicopter was called to the scene to airlift a person who was injured in the crash, according to Callahan, and Mazon, Dwight and Morris first response agencies were on location.

Route 47 between Grand Ridge and Gardner roads was closed for much of the evening, but had reopened by about 9 p.m., according to the Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.

A 4-foot will keep most coyotes out but they can jump it if determined.

Secure garbage – even adding moth balls if necessary – even though they prefer rodents. Avoid feeding birds, which draws rodents that coyotes like to feed on.

If you are an avid bird feeder like me, it’s recommended to use squirrel-proof feeders and keep the area clean of debris to reduce the rodent population. When a coyote’s natural prey declines, they will feed on the squirrels that visit our feeders.

Don’t leave small pets outside unattended and don’t leave leftover pet food outdoors. Keep in mind that coyotes are opportunistic feeders.

We need to understand that coyotes are a permanent fixture in rural, suburban and urban Illinois, according to the U of I Extension, so we have to change some of our habits to live in harmony with them.

Just last week, Plainfield Police Sgt. Mike Fisher sent out a news release regarding calls that department has received about coyotes.

There are several things residents need to know about living with suburban coyotes because they are not going away. They are valuable to the wildlife community, according to the University of Illinois Extension office.

Because they feed mostly on mice, voles, fawns and rabbits, they help to keep those populations under control.

In Illinois, the coyote is a protected as a furbearer. They cannot be removed or killed without proper permits from the IDNR. When coyotes are killed, the pack compensates by producing more pups.

Most coyote daytime sightings can be considered non-threatening. There have been no reported coyote attacks on humans in Illinois in 30 years, according to the U of I Extension. The species has become accustomed to humans and adapted to their changing environment.

But it can be unnerving to see a coyote lurking in the brush when your child is at a bus stop, or you are out walking a dog. So there are things that can be done to discourage their presence and protect yourself if you do feel threatened.

If you are approached by one, do not run. Yell, stand up straight and wave your arms to make yourself appear larger to scare it off.

Cudy advises residents to remove their coat or outer layer, flip it upside down and over your head to appear even bigger.

Pebbles in a pop can is a good noise maker to scare them off.

Beltzhoover’s home day care was faith in action

JOLIET – Lisa Morel Las of Joliet was torn. Her in-laws no longer could care for her 3-year-old daughter, Lauren, because her father-inlaw was ill. Should she stay home?

Seek out day care?

Someone recommended Rita Beltzhoover’s Joliet home day care.

Lisa liked the home aspect, checked it out and was blown away.

Rita’s basement was a miniature preschool.

But it was Rita herself who swayed Lisa the second Lisa met her.

“She was just pure love,” Lisa said. “She just radiated love for the kids she had with her.”

Born to Czechoslovakian immigrants and the youngest of five children, Rita had a childhood of hardship and poverty. Rita’s mother made jam, which Rita’s father used to barter for food, said Gretchen Troha of Joliet, one of Rita’s seven children.

Rita met her husband, Edward Beltzhoover (deceased), while he was serving in the U.S. Army and

she was attending secretarial school, Gretchen said. They married the following year, and 13 months later, Rita had her first child.

The combination of Rita’s devotion to her Catholic faith and her penchant for service led her to begin her own day care.

Rita’s business was three years strong by the time Gretchen, the youngest of the seven, was born.

Half the finished Rita basement was dedicatBeltzhoover ed to the day care. It contained miniature furniture and shelves filled with books and puzzles.

For many years, the area had no TV, only Rita entertaining and education the children for eight hours, Gretchen said.

Rita gave the same attention to her children. She cooked, cleaned, packed lunches and never missed an event, Gretchen said. She volunteered at church and often went to bed at 2 a.m. and was back up at 6 a.m.

But Rita also was humble and

never drew attention to herself.

“She was truly the most selfless person I have ever known,” said Christine Beltzhoover of Naperville, Rita’s daughter. “She had so much grace and class, just a beautiful spirit.”

Rita would take her day care kids on walking field trips to the fire station near her home or to collect leaves. They used the leaves in a craft and discussed the science behind them.

“I almost never felt comfortable leaving my daughter anywhere,” Lisa said. “But Rita was so calm and patient and understanding. She was exactly the sort of person you’d want your child around.”

Lauren balked if Lisa arrived early to take her home. If Lisa had the day off, Lauren would plead, “Can I please go to Rita’s?” When Lauren aged out of day care, she still went to Rita’s to “help out.” Lisa said people asked her, “Aren’t you jealous?”

“I had no reason to feel jealous,” Lisa said. “I was so grateful for this type of care.”

The care continued even after Lauren stopped going to Rita’s. Rita

would bring her a Christmas ornament to hang on the tree.

When Lauren went to the state competition with Joliet Catholic Academy volleyball team, Rita was there.

When Lauren, a Harvard graduate, turned 21, Rita sent her a paper crown, which all “Rita’s kids” received for their birthdays.

In 1994 and at age 61, Rita earned her associates degree in child development from Governor State University in University Park.

The passing years and a battle with Alzheimer’s never changed Rita’s inherent personality.

Gretchen said her mother was always “as sweet as could be.” Gretchen recalled the last words her mother spoke, just days before her death Aug. 8 at the age of 82. A caregiver had just adjusted Rita’s hospital bed to make her more comfortable.

“She said, ‘Thank you,’ ” Gretchen said.

‘The Sound of Music’ actress Charmian Carr dies at age 73

LOS ANGELES – Charmian Carr, the actress best known for sweetly portraying the eldest von Trapp daughter in Rogers & Hammerstein’s “The Sound of Music,” has died.

She was 73.

Carr died Saturday of complications from a rare form of dementia in Los Angeles, Carr’s Charmian spokesman, Harlan Boll, Carr said.

At age 21, the actress portrayed Liesl von Trapp in the 1965 film version of the musical “The Sound of Music.” She famously performed the song “Sixteen Going on Seventeen.”

After “The Sound of Music,” Carr’s only other major Hollywood role was starring with Anthony Perkins in the Stephen Sondheim television musical “Evening Primrose.” She played a mysterious young woman who lived in a department store.

“It’s always sad when a member of the family passes away – and in the case of the ‘family’ of the movie ‘The Sound

of Music,’ it’s especially sad when it is the first of the group to go,” said Ted Chapin, president of the Rogers & Hammerstein organization, in a statement.

“Charmian Carr played the oldest von Trapp child, and in some ways she maintained that role in real life – guiding, cheering, supporting and generally being there for the rest of her ‘sisters’ and ‘brothers.’ ” 20th Century Fox, the studio that produced the “Sound of Music” film, noted Carr’s death. “The Sound of Music lost a beloved member of the family w/ the passing of Charmian Carr. She will be forever missed,” the studio said on its Twitter account.

The actress later wrote a pair of books about her “Sound of Music” experiences: “Forever Liesl” and “Letters to Liesl.” She fully embraced audiences’ reverence for the musical, frequently appearing at fan events commemorating the film, including sing-a-long performances at the Hollywood Bowl.

She was born in Chicago in 1942. Her mother was a vaudeville actress, and her father was a musician and orchestra leader.

Her family moved to the San Fernando Valley when she was a child.

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Illinois schools are required now to limit long-term suspensions and expulsions under a new law that also eliminates the use of zero-tolerance policies used to severely punish students for certain offenses.

The law, which took effect last week, is designed to reduce the number of days that students are pulled from classrooms and encourage school administrators to use suspensions as a last resort.

“So it becomes a school system that says, ‘What can we do to keep this student in an academic setting?’ ” said Sen. Kimberly Lightford, a Chicago Democrat who sponsored the legislation.

Illinois lawmakers passed the bill with overwhelming support last year.

States have been rethinking the zero-tolerance policies that gained prominence following the mass shooting at Colorado’s Columbine High School in 1999.

Colorado and North Carolina eliminated zero-tolerance policies in 2011.

All Chicago patrol officers to wear body cams by 2018

CHICAGO – Chicago police announced Sunday that they will expand the use of body cameras to include all officers on patrol by 2018.

The numbers of body cameras will increase by several thousand within the next two years so every officer on patrol has access to the wallet-size cameras, Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said.

Johnson said their use should improve accountability and help build community trust.

The department launched its body-cam pilot program in 2015, and it currently includes seven of 22 city police districts. Expanding it to the other districts will cost around $8 million, money that will come from the depart-

The new Illinois law requires schools to suspend students more than three days only in cases where they pose a threat to the school, and all other disciplinary options – including counseling them or involving them in after-school programs – have been exhausted. Jennifer Gill, superintendent of Springfield Public Schools, said the district has spent the last year training and informing teachers, security guards, nurses and other staff in preparation of the law. She said the state gave the schools no additional funding

School suspensions have decreased the last two years, but there still are racial disparities, according to figures from the Illinois State Board of Education.

During the 2015 school year, more than 296,400 students were suspended, down from nearly 340,000 in 2014.

Suspensions longer than 10 days also decreased, from nearly 1,200 in 2014 to just more than 650 in 2015.

Students were suspended for fighting, using drugs and having dangerous weapons, but most were placed in the “other” category, which the school board data do not explain.

Black students are far more likely to be suspended than their peers, a trend that has persisted since 2009, when an Associated Press analysis found that more than half of all children suspended from Illinois public schools were black, even though they represented less than one-fifth of enrollment.

The percentage of black students being suspended has decreased only slightly since 2009. They made up nearly 45 percent of the suspensions in 2014, and just over 47 percent in 2015.

The statue spent a year and a half wrapped in a green protective mesh around scaffolding that was erected in December 2014. The material came down in June.

Autopsies set for 4 found in Rockford home after fire

ROCKFORD – Autopsies are planned in the deaths of four people, including three children, whose bodies were found in a Rockford home destroyed by a weekend fire.

The Rockford Register Star said they Winnebago County Coroner’s Office will complete the autopsies Monday to determine whether the fire or something else caused the deaths.

The coroner’s office said the victims included a 27-year-old, a 9-year-old, a 6-year-old and a 6-month-old.

The newspaper said firefighters responded to the blaze in a single-family home around 5 a.m. Saturday. Fire department officials said the house was already engulfed in flames by the

time they arrived.

2016 Illinois State Fair attendance down; weather cited

SPRINGFIELD – Officials said attendance at the 2016 Illinois State Fair fell by around 13 percent compared with attendance numbers last year.

The State Journal-Register reported that officials blamed flooding in the area, the heat and a power outage for the decline in attendance for the 11-day event in August. Total attendance from Aug. 11 to 21 was more than 357,000. About 411,000-plus attended last year.

At the same time, fair officials said, they are happy that revenue figures were similar to those of previous years.

A report on the state fair numbers indicated that about 7.75 inches of rain fell during the fair, including 5.59 inches on Aug. 12.

Fair Manager Kevin Gordon said staff “battled obstacles at every turn,” including triple-digit heat indices.

FBI investigates stabbings in Minn. as possible terror act

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – A man in a private security uniform stabbed nine people at a Minnesota shopping mall, reportedly asking one victim if he or she was Muslim, before an off-duty police officer shot and killed him in an attack the Islamic State group claimed as its own.

None of the nine people who were stabbed in Saturday night’s attack received life-threatening wounds, St. Cloud police Chief Blair Anderson said. He said it doesn’t appear that anyone else was involved in the attack at the Crossroads Center in St. Cloud, which began at around 8 p.m. and was over within minutes.

At a news conference Sunday, FBI Special Agent-in-Charge Rick Thornton said the attack was being investigated as a possible act of terrorism and that agents still were digging into the attacker’s background and possible motives. Authorities were looking at social media accounts and the attacker’s electronic devices, and talking to his associates, Thornton said.

An Islamic State-run news agency, Rasd, claimed Sunday that the attacker was a “soldier of the Islamic State” who had heeded the group’s calls for attacks in countries that are part of a U.S.-led anti-IS coalition.

It was not immediately clear if the extremist group had planned the attack or even knew about it beforehand. IS has encouraged socalled “lone wolf” attacks. It has also claimed past attacks that are not believed to have been planned by its central leadership.

Authorities didn’t identify the attacker, but the Star Tribune of Minneapolis said the man’s father identified him as Dahir A. Adan, 22. Speaking to the newspaper through an in-

terpreter, Ahmed Adan, whose family is Somali, said his son was born in Africa and had lived in the U.S. for 15 years.

A spokesman for St. Cloud State University confirmed that Adan was a student there, but has not been enrolled since the spring semester. Spokesman Adam Hammer said Adan’s intended major was information systems, which is a computer-related field.

Ahmed Adan said police told him around 9 p.m. Saturday that his son had died at the mall, and that police had raided the family’s apartment, seizing photos and other materials. He said police said nothing to him about the mall attack, and that he had “no suspicion” that his son had been involved in terrorist activity, the newspaper reported.

Anderson said police had had three previous encounters with the attacker, mostly for minor traffic violations.

Anderson said the attacker, dressed in a security uniform and wielding what appeared to be a kitchen knife, began attacking people right after entering the mall, stabbing people in several spots inside the building, including corridors, businesses and common areas.

Five minutes after authorities received the first 911 call, Jason Falconer, a part-time officer in the city of Avon, shot and killed the attacker. Anderson said Falconer fired as the attacker was lunging at him with the knife, and continued to engage him as the attacker got up three times.

“He clearly prevented additional injuries and potential loss of life,” Anderson said. “Officer Falconer was there at the right time and the right place,” he said.

Anderson earlier said the man reportedly made at least one reference to Allah and asked a victim if he or she was Muslim before attacking them.

Fake gun, real crime: Police notice uptick in replicas

Whether they shoot BBs, pellets, paintballs or nothing at all, imitation guns can be indistinguishable from the real thing – it’s one reason why some criminals gravitate toward them. Plus, they’re cheap and easy to get.

As Ohio authorities investigate the fatal police shooting of a 13-year-old boy who officers said pulled a realistic-looking BB gun from his waistband, law enforcement agencies are grappling with the use of fake guns to commit very real crimes.

“If I can’t go get a real gun, it’s easier for me to waltz into Wal-Mart or whatever store sells these things and go get a replica. Because if I go to a store to hold it up, the guy behind the counter isn’t going to know it’s not real,” said Geoffrey Alpert, a criminal justice professor at the University of South Carolina.

While the federal government does not track criminals’ use of toy or replica guns, some individual police departments say they’ve noticed an uptick.

In Edmonton, Canada, police said

imitation guns were involved in 1,598 incidents in 2015 – up 38 percent from a year earlier.

In Arlington, Texas, suspects are increasingly using lookalike guns, including an incident earlier this year in which a man carjacked a woman using an air gun that resembled a real pistol, and another case involving a teen who threatened an officer with a replica gun. The officer managed to knock it out of the teen’s hand and tackle him.

Arlington police Lt. Christopher Cook said that between March and August, nearly 20 percent of the weapons seized by police after they were used in crimes turned out to be lookalikes.

So far, police haven’t had to use deadly force. But Cook said that could change in an instant.

“There’s no training in the world that we know of where an officer can readily distinguish a real gun from a fake gun,” he said. “That’s not realistic, because officers have to make split-second decisions to ascertain whether it’s a firearm or not.”

A lookalike weapon is at the center of last week’s fatal police shooting of Tyre King in Columbus, Ohio.

An officer responding to a report of a $10 armed robbery shot the teen after he pulled out a BB gun that looked “practically identical” to the weapon that police officers use, Columbus police said.

A 19-year-old who said he was the boy’s friend told a newspaper that Tyre had a real-looking BB gun, was out to rob someone and ran from police. But an attorney for Tyre’s family has called for an independent investigation, saying the family believes the boy’s involvement in an armed robbery would be “out of character” and the police version of events “might not be true.”

However the facts shake loose in Columbus, the use of replica guns in crime has long vexed law enforcement.

In the late 1980s, after a rash of high-profile police shootings of suspects carrying toy or lookalike guns, Congress authorized a study that found thousands of robberies and assaults to have been committed with imitation weapons between 1985 and 1989. The study also identified more than 250 cases in which an officer used force – deadly or otherwise – on a suspect brandishing an imitation gun.

More recently, Associated Press research found at least 25 deaths involving lookalike guns mistaken by police for actual firearms across the country in the last two decades, dating to the 1994 slaying by a housing police officer of a 13-year-old New York City boy.

“It’s horrible, it’s horrible, when these kids are displaying these firearms and a life is lost, and after the fact it turns out it’s not real,” said Allentown, Pennsylvania, police Capt. Richard London.

But he added it can be nearly impossible to tell an imitation gun from a firearm that shoots real bullets.

“It’s human nature to defend yourself in the face of that,” he said.

At least 12 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico have laws restricting the sale or use of imitation firearms, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures, while many cities and towns have their own ordinances on lookalike guns.

Federal law requires imitation guns to have orange plugs in the barrel to distinguish them from real firearms, but the tips are easily removed and experts question their effectiveness.

LOS ANGELES – “Game of Thrones” conquered the Emmy kingdom Sunday, honored as top drama for the second consecutive year and becoming the most honored prime-time TV series ever on a night of surprises and sharp political jabs.

“Veep” repeated as best comedy series, and its star, Julia-Louis Dreyfus, won a record-breaking sixth Emmy as best comedy actress. Jeffrey Tambor’s trophy as top comedy actor for “Transparent” also was his second.

But the top drama acting trophies were far from predictable: Rami Malek of “Mr. Robot” and Tatiana Maslany of “Orphan Black” were the winners, both overcoming heavyweight competition.

“Oh, my God. Please tell me you’re seeing this, too,” said a stunned Malek, who plays an emotionally troubled engineer caught up in a dangerous hacking conspiracy.

“Games of Thrones,” the fantasy saga based on George R.R. Martin’s novels, received a total of 12 awards Sunday and at last weekend’s technical arts ceremony for a cumulative 38, besting “Frasier” by one to claim most primetime series awards ever.

The Emmys proved more adroit than the Oscars at recognizing and honoring diversity in Hollywood’s top ranks,

with trophies going to minority actors and behind-the-scenes artists including writers Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang of “Master of None.”

But Viola Davis of “How to Get Away with Murder” failed to repeat her 2015 best drama actress win, the first for a woman of color.

Louis-Dreyfus used her victory to take a dig at GOP contender Donald Trump in a ceremony loaded with election-year asides.

Tambor captured his second consecutive best comedy actor trophy for “Transparent,” in which he plays a transgender character.

He called for Hollywood to make him the last non-transgender actor to get such a role.

A shaking Louis-Dreyfus ended her speech by dedicating the trophy to her father, who she said died Friday. Before that, she honed in on GOP contender Donald Trump’s campaign.

“I’d also like to take this opportunity to personally apologize for the current political climate,” she said. “I think that ‘Veep’ has torn down the wall between comedy and politics. Our show started out as a political satire, but it now feels more like a sobering documentary.”

She promised to “rebuild that wall and make Mexico pay for it.”

Something different about this group at Joliet Central VIEWS Dick Goss The celebration has wound down.

The warm and fuzzy feeling will last, but it is time to get back to work.

That’s the way the Joliet Central football team is approaching Week 5 of the regular season after the Steelmen outlasted Southwest Prairie Conference foe Plainfield Central, 38-35, Saturday in what was an incredible homecoming game, start to finish.

Incredible in that if you didn’t know it, you never would have believed the two teams had come in having lost a combined 89 games. The Steelmen had not won since the Joliet Township district reinstated separate programs in 2010, and the Wildcats have not tasted victory since Week 8 of the 2012 season.

The current players on the two rosters, of course, were involved in only a small portion of the streaks. But the burden of getting the monkey off the program’s back was theirs.

As Central coach Brett Boyter said after Saturday’s wild finish, it was a shame there had to be a loser on this day. If there ever was a time when two teams deserved victory, this was it.

“This is surreal, really,” Central senior defensive lineman/linebacker Bobby Ogden said a few minutes afterward. “This does not happen every day. We were getting a little tired there at the end, but we knew we had to keep going.”

All along, Boyter has said there is something different about this group of Steelmen. These kids get it. They are a true football team, with each player willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done.

“The biggest difference from the past to this team is how these kids can put stuff like that (the Steelmen’s 71-0 loss at Oswego East the previous week) behind them and move ahead,” Boyter said.

“I’m so happy for these kids and their parents. To see them competing and now to get the outcome they wanted on the scoreboard, I don’t how to describe it. This (winning) now is the expectation, not the exception.”

Program transformation

Ogden, who was involved in two tackles for loss Saturday, said the real transformation in the Central program began early in the summer.

“We came in and the coaches taught us something new,” he said.

“We thought it would be the same old stuff, but there was nothing old about it. There were new training methods, new plays, a different mindset and a different mission statement. The other team is not going to break down, and we can’t, either.”

There were times during the Plainfield Central game that no less a figure than the player of the game and last-minute hero, the Steelmen’s JoJo McNair, admitted to having some doubt about whether Joliet Central would hang in and get that elusive victory.

“When I told guys I had doubts, they said to fight through it,” McNair said.

“Marcus Stone (who made a key interception in the first half) was telling me to keep playing.”

“What these kids did is prove to themselves that they can win football games,” Boyter said. “Until you actually do it, you are going to have some doubt.”

Keep playing. Never take a single play off. Ogden admitted that occasionally happened with some Steelmen in the past, but not anymore.

“We put a first and second half together today, and we never gave up,” he said. “We know none of us can ever take one play off. You might think it’s only one play, but it could cost you everything. This game showed that.

“What we have done is create our own men of steel. The men of steel did win. This was the start of our new season. What the coaches have been preaching works if we do our job every play. The way we see it now, we’re not going to lose any more games this season.”

Whether that proves to be a true statement on the scoreboard remains to be seen. But there is no doubt the Steelmen are prepared to play like winners every time out.

Offensive execution huge

A big part of the reason Joliet Central has the monkey off its back is offensive execution. The Steelmen were not in the habit of scoring a legitimate 38 offensive points – not even close.

But on this day, quarterback Zach Wisneski completed 20 of 30 passes for 280 yards and four touchdowns.

McNair caught eight for 142 yards and three scores and rushed for 91 and another score. Frank Fiegel caught six passes for 77 yards and a

touchdown.

I mentioned to Boyter that one guy who had a great day was his offensive coordinator, Tony Juarez, a former Joliet Township head coach in football and baseball.

“Tony could be a head coach again, anywhere,” Boyter said. “My three coordinators – Tony with the offense, Kyle (Knezetic) with the defense and Brian (Levicke) with special teams – really, all I do is turn everything over to them. They do the work.”

The crowd Saturday was in excess of 2,000 to see two teams as hungry for a victory as any ever will be. It is difficult to imagine that anyone who was there – incidentally, Plainfield Central fans filled the visitors’ stands – will not want to return to watch their favorite team over the final five weeks of the season.

Imagine what winning this football game is doing for the morale at Joliet Central, and how proud the alumni of the program are. Imagine what the impact at Plainfield Central will be when first-year coach Jon Pereiro’s Wildcats put that first notch in the left-hand column.

That is coming soon. You can feel it. The two teams we saw Saturday put together a football game we will not soon forget, and both are ready to do more winning.

Truex Jr. beats Elliott in overtime in first Chase race

Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – Call the day of Martin Truex Jr. adventurous.

An early move to the lead. An early stop in the pits because of a delaminating right front tire. The necessity to use NASCAR’s “lucky dog” rule to get back on the lead lap. Getting hit on the backstretch by Kevin Harvick for no apparent reason.

That was just the first 125 laps. Finally, after sitting 15th halfway through the race and seventh with 100 miles remaining in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400, the breaks began to fall Truex’s way.

He was running second behind rookie Chase Elliott with 20 laps to go, and the way Elliott was motoring around Chicagoland Speedway, there was no way he’d be caught.

Until, as so often happens, as Elliott suspected would happen, as Truex hoped would happen, a late-race caution occasioned by Michael McDowell’s flat tire and subsequent field of debris in Turn 3 gave hope to any and all of those behind Elliott.

Especially Truex. After he and the other contenders grabbed new tires, he lined up on the outside of the second row for the overtime shootout to decide the issue.

“Getting that fourth spot was the key to winning,” Truex said. “Making the move to the outside was the only one I was presented with.”

The move to the outside after the green flag on the penultimate lap proved to be the winning move. Truex barreled high going into Turn 1, quickly passing Kasey Kahne, who restarted on the outside of restart leader Ryan Blaney, and set his sights on him.

As about 60,000 spectators watched, Truex came beside Blaney on the exit of Turn 2 and passed him in the middle of Turn 3. He held the lead in his Furniture Row Racing-owned Toyota for the final 2-plus miles of the 270-lap test and captured the first race of NASCAR’s playoff series, his third race of the season, and the sixth of his career, .776 seconds in front of runnerup Joey Logano. Truex, automatically propelled into the Chase’s 12-driver round with the victory, has finished first (at Darlington), third (at Richmond) and first in his last three races.

“I’ve never been in a position where I feel we can go anywhere and win,” Truex said. “Right now I feel like any racetrack, any weekend, anywhere in

Elliott knew what was coming when the yellow flag waved for the fourth and final time.

“We know that we see late-race cautions way more often than not,” Elliott said. “You’ve just got to be ready for it, embrace it when it happens, suck it up and try to figure out how to make it happen after it does.”

Elliott, still in search of his first Sprint Cup victory, finished third.

“There is no easy outcome,” Elliott said. “You hate to have it happen.”

Truex, while pleased to win and grab a one-point lead in the Chase playoffs, had empathy for Elliott.

“I know what he’s going through,” Truex said. “He did a great job. I wasn’t going to catch him. I was catching him, but not enough to pass him in five more laps. I was struggling to run him down.”

Truex also knew grabbing new tires was the way to go.

“Cole [Pearn, his crew chief] said, ‘What do you want to do?’ I said, ‘We just

ran a long way, we get tires,’ ” Truex said. “Everybody took tires but three guys, and they were sitting ducks.”

“As much falloff as we were seeing today, it made it much easier to get tires,” Pearn said.

Truex was fortunate not to crash early, so severe was the right front Goodyear tire that was coming apart.

That set in motion a sequence of events that most drivers don’t recover from, and when he had, along came Harvick, a lap down after bad luck on timing his first pit stop, to give him an unfriendly

tap on the backstretch.

“He hit me in the rear as we were going straight for no reason.” Truex said. “The reason I thought it was intentional is because we were on the straightaway. Typically it’s real easy not to run into somebody’s left rear on the straightaway. As far as I could tell, he did it on purpose.”

Harvick was unavailable for comment, making a quick exit after parking his car in the pit lane.

Truex Jr. overcomes adversity for Chase win

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Martin Truex Jr. has seen all too frequently how much fortunes can change during the final laps of a NASCAR Sprint Cup race.

So when he saw a caution flag raised with five laps left in Sunday’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400 at Chicagoland Speedway, Truex realized that he suddenly had a chance to claim one of the biggest victories of his 12year career in the series.

With rookie Chase Elliott appearing to be on the verge of his first Sprint Cup win, Truex was closing ground but admitted that he was unlikely to pass him in the late going.

But that all changed when Michael McDowell had an accident in Turn 4 with five laps left and all but three cars went into the pits for new tires. Truex was able to get out of the pits before Elliott and thus moved to the outside spot in Row 2 for the restart.

Rookie Ryan Blaney, who didn’t pit, held a brief lead before Truex eventually passed him and then led the final two laps to capture his third victory of the season after beating runner-up

Joey Logano by .776 seconds. More importantly, his win in the kickoff to the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series advances him to the round of 12.

After leading for 30 laps early in the race, Truex’s chances took a big hit when his right front tire began unraveling, which dropped him back to 21st place just 75 laps into the race, and he remained in that vicinity throughout the next 45 laps before moving up steadily after that.

“Really today was a great day for us on the racetrack,” Truex said. “We had to overcome some adversity, obviously. That was tough. But really proud of our team for everybody sticking together, everybody keeping their heads down and never quitting til it was over. Today was obviously a big win for us. Just excited for everybody.

I mean, this is what we came here to do. It was cool to be able to put it out there and make it happen.”

After winning three races during his first 11 years in Sprint Cup, Truex has won that many races this season, including two in his last three starts.

He credits his success, which includes 13 top-10 efforts, to his Furniture Row team that is led by crew chief Cole

Pearn.

“Without a doubt, it’s the best team I’ve ever had, it’s the best position I’ve ever been in,” Truex said. “I really feel like we have what it takes to win this championship. I felt like we had the same thing last year but we just didn’t have the racecars. We didn’t have the speed we have now. That’s really taken us to another level.

“There’s been years, a few years, where I should have won multiple races, but I’ve never been in a position where I feel like we can go anywhere and win. Right now, I feel like any racetrack, any weekend, anywhere in the country we can win. It’s just so much fun to go to the racetrack and have that feeling, have that much confidence in your team and what you’re doing. Having that much confidence in yourself as a driver is the ultimate goal.”

After his fortunes took a bad turn following his early lead, Truex just had to focus on working his way back toward the lead, which was a lot easier said than done.

“The mindset was, ‘All right, this isn’t good, this is bad. I really wish this didn’t happen, but it did. How are we going to overcome it?’ Truex said.

“Cole kept me updated on who the leader was, who was a lap down, where I had to get to. Just kept me pushing, just kept my head down, kept digging.

Eventually got back on the lead lap.

“It wasn’t easy to pass out there.

But our car was really good on the long runs. That’s where we were able to make time. It was trying to be patient on the short runs, on the restarts, try to keep my tires under me, and wait for those guys to start fading, then make my move. That’s what I did all day long, and it worked out.”

The team made one more correct call as the race was winding down.

The decision to follow Elliott for new tires resulted in a great pit, which positioned him well for the decisive restart.

“When the caution came out, Cole said, ‘Now what do we do?’ “ Truex said. “I said, ‘We just a long way, we get tires. Obviously that was the right idea, the right call, because everybody took tires except for three guys. They were sitting ducks. Getting four tires was a great call. The pit crew had a great stop at the end, which we really needed. Getting that fourth position on the outside I think was the key to winning.”

Late caution foils Elliott’s bid for first win

dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – For much of Sunday afternoon at Chicagoland Speedway, it looked for all the world as if Hendrick Motorsports would snap its 21-race winless streak.

Jimmie Johnson, the veteran vying to tie Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Richard Petty with his seventh season championship, and his teammate, up-andcoming star Chase Elliott, who also qualified for the Chase for the Sprint Cup despite not yet having won a race, ran together in the top two spots for virtually half of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400.

On lap 232, however, Johnson was penalized for speeding on pit road, the fourth such time he has been with that violation in the last eight races. The only driver to have qualified for all 13 Chases, he finished 12th in a race he led for 118 of the 270 laps.

Elliott, meanwhile, led three times for a total of 75 laps. He was in perfect position to win as the race was nearing the home stretch. Eventual winner Martin Truex Jr. was closing in but said he probably would not have caught Elliott if not for a caution that flew on lap 264 when Michael McDowell was involved in a turn 4 accident.

The race thus became the second in Chicagoland Speedway history to go into NASCAR overtime. The first was July 9, 2006, when Jeff Gordon won the event.

This time, Truex barely beat Elliott off pit road. Because of the number of cars that stayed out and did not pit, Truex got the fourth spot, an outside position, for the restart. Elliott was in the fifth position on the inside and wound up third, with Joey Logan taking second.

“I expected the final caution,” Elliott said. “We’ve all watched this stuff long enough, we know these races don’t go green that long typically. We know we see late-race cautions way more often than not. That’s a part of racing from short-track racing all the way up to this stuff.”

The 20-year-old Elliott has come close to winning a Sprint Cup race previously, twice finishing second at Michigan this season.

“There is no easy outcome when the late caution happens,” he said. “It’s unfortunate, you hate to have it happen.

“But we did a good job as a team today trying to control the things that we could control. And you can’t control when a caution is coming out. And you certainly can’t control how many guys are going to stay out on tires and try to make something happen at the end of

Although not in the Chase, another Hendrick Motorsports driver, Kasey Kahne, ran a strong race and finished seventh. He was outside on the front row for the overtime restart.

AROUND THE TRACK

Elliott was the highest finishing rookie. Fellow rookie Ryan Blaney, who stayed out for the final caution, finished fourth.

“Yeah, we stayed out for final restart,” Blaney said. “We knew only a couple others were out with us. What we needed was for two or three more to stay out. But we’re not in the Chase, we’ll take risks like that. Sometimes it doesn’t work out, sometimes, like today, it works out good.”

• Kyle Larson, a popular pick among NASCAR gurus as a candidate for the Championship Round of the Chase, finished No. 1 in both of the last two practices for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400. However, he started at the back of the field because of a transmission change.

He methodically worked his way into serious contention, but late problems with a tire relegated him to an 18th-place finish.

• Kevin Harvick, another popular

pick in the Chase, also had to start at the rear because of unapproved adjustments. Aric Almirola started at the rear for the same reason.

Harvick’s day was amazing. He blew through the field early on, reaching the top 10 in record time. But a poorly timed caution set him back and late in the race, he had to pit for gas when the other leaders were able to stay out as his needed caution did not happen at an appropriate time. He finished 20th.

• Ty Dillon filled in for Regan Smith in the No. 7 Tommy Baldwin Racing Chevrolet all week at Chicagoland Speedway. Smith returned home to be with his wife at the birth of their second daughter, who was born Sunday.

Dillon did not have to start at the back of the field because he practiced the car.

Smith had made all 26 starts in the No. 7 so far this season with two top-10 finishes. Dillon had made eight starts this season in the Sprint Cup Series and served as a relief driver for Tony Stewart at Talladega in the spring. He finished 27th Sunday.

Dillon currently is a regular in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and will participate in that series’ seven-race Xfinity Series Chase, which begins next weekend at Kentucky Speedway.

• Country music singer and songwriter Chase Rice performed the prerace concert.

Florida-born and North Carolina-raised, Rice attended North Carolina on a football scholarship and worked on a NASCAR pit crew before moving to Nashville to pursue his music career. Rice has a passion for NASCAR, developed through attending races while following his father’s racing career and through his own career experience in the sport.

“Racing is in my blood. My dad actually used to race when we lived in Florida and won his class at 24 Hours of Daytona, and my first job out of college was with Hendrick Motorsports, so being at the track is like home to me,” Rice said. “NASCAR has the most passionate fans in the world, so it was really cool to be able to come back as a performer now and combine two of the things I love the most – music and NASCAR.” • No matter how many times you hear the Blackhawks’ Jim Cornelison sing the National Anthem, it never gets old. His prerace rendition was followed by the fly-by of the A-10’s 122nd Fighter Wing from the Air National Guard Indiana.

Morales drives in 4, leads Royals over Sox The ASSOCIATED PRESS KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kendrys Morales homered for his 1,000th career hit and drove in four runs, Danny Duffy pitched effectively into the eighth inning and the Kansas City Royals beat the White Sox, 10-3, Sunday.

Duffy (12-2) picked up his first victory since Aug. 21. He struck out eight and gave up three runs.

Morales homered in the sixth with Paulo Orlando aboard. Orlando reached base four times – two doubles, a walk and hit by pitch – and scored three runs.

Morales contributed a RBI single in the first and doubled home Eric Hosmer in the fourth.

Hosmer drove in three runs, giving him a career-best 94 RBIs. Whit Merrifield had three hits and two RBIs. Alex Gordon ended an 0-for-21 drought with his 16th home run, which splashed into the upper rightfield fountain.

Todd Frazier hit his 37th homer, a Sox record for a third baseman.

Jose Quintana (12-11) was removed after four innings. He faced 24 batters, giving up 10 hits and three walks.

Quintana’s career record against the Royals dropped to 1-9.

Double challenge: The third inning included a 4-minute, 25-second review that had both managers making a challenge on the same play. Ned Yost of the Royals claimed shortstop Tim Anderson did not touch second base before throwing to first on Hosmer’s grounder. Sox manager Robin Ventura challenged that Orlando slid out of the base path. After the review, the call on the field was overturned with Orlando ruled safe and the slide was legal.

Trainer’s room: Sox: INF Tyler Saladino was out for the second straight game with a left calf issue. “He’s getting better,” Ventura said. “There’s nothing mechanically wrong in there.

He’s just sore and you just have to treat it.” . DH Justin Morneau missed his sixth straight game with neck discomfort.

Up next: Sox: LHP Carlos Rodon, who is 5-1 with a 2.77 ERA in his past eight starts, will start the series finale.

Royals: RHP Yordano Ventura has allowed at least 11 baserunners in each of his past three starts with 12 walks and 23 hits.

CHICAGO – Major league ERA leader Kyle Hendricks allowed two runs in six innings and remained stuck on 15 victories as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cubs, 3-1, Sunday.

Tyler Thornburg struck out Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo with two on in the ninth to earn his 11th save in 16 chances.

The NL Central champion Cubs have lost four of six and are trying to secure home-field advantage in the playoffs. They resumed playing their regulars after clinching the division Thursday.

Chris Carter homered and Martin Maldonado and pitcher Wily Peralta (710) added RBI singles for the Brewers, who took three of four games from the Cubs. Milwaukee slugger Ryan Braun got a scheduled day off after hitting two home runs Saturday.

Hendricks (15-8), making his first start since losing a no-hit bid in the ninth inning at St. Louis, struck out nine and gave up six hits. His ERA rose from 2.03 to 2.06 as he lost for the first time since July 26 at the White Sox. Hendricks hasn’t allowed more than

two earned runs in a home start since April 15 against Colorado. In each of his last 21 starts, he has surrendered three or fewer earned runs.

The right-hander struck out the first three batters before allowing a single to Hernan Perez to start the second inning. The Brewers hit three straight singles to score two runs.

Carter hit his 36th home run, a solo shot, off Felix Pena in the eighth.

Tommy La Stella pinch hit for Hendricks in the sixth and doubled in a run. Anthony Rizzo missed a game-tying home run when he flied out to the right-field warning track in the seventh.

Peralta gave up a run on nine hits and struck out five in six innings.

Looking ahead: Beyond home-field advantage in the playoffs, Cubs manager Joe Maddon wants to reach 100 victories. They’re at 94 right now. “It’s a pretty neat number. I’ve never done that before,” said Maddon, who won 97 in 2008 with Tampa and last year with the Cubs.

Trainer’s room: Cubs: OF Jorge Soler (tight side) is day-to-day after he underwent an MRI, Maddon said. Soler could resume playing Monday or Tuesday after taking swings in the batting cage.

“Really good safeties,” Bears quarterback Jay Cutler said ahead of Monday night’s meeting with the Eagles at Soldier Field. “I think you look down the middle of that defense, that is kind of their strength and you get up to the safeties, veteran guys. They understand football. They are able to play the box. They are able to get off the hash. They play the ball well in the air. That’s kind of their strength in the secondary and one of the strengths of the team on defense.”

Jenkins is in his eighth NFL season but only 28 years old. Starting every game last season, he had 109 tackles, 10 passes defensed and two interceptions.

McLeod, 26, signed a five-year, $37

million contract with the Eagles in the offseason after three consecutive seasons starting every game for the Rams.

He had an interception last week of Robert Griffin III, although that was the only pass defensed recorded for the Eagles’ secondary in Week 1.

“Those guys quarterback the defense,” Bears offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains said. “They’re smart, and you have to make sure what they’re doing and where they’re lined up because they can be a big problem for you.”

With starting corner Leodis McKelvin injured, the Eagles are set to start seventh-round draft pick Jalen Mills at corner opposite Nolan Carroll, making the boundary an area where the Bears can attack with receivers Alshon Jeffery and Kevin White. Look for the Eagles to try to funnel things to the middle to their playmakers, Jenkins and McLeod, just like they do up front.

Those center-field DBs also could pose a challenge for tight end Zach Miller, who had only 14 yards receiving last week, in part because of how

the Texans used their safeties on him, Loggains said.

Finding the RB waves: The Bears were 2 for 8 on third down in the second half in Houston, which kept them from sustaining drives, and it kept running backs Ka’Deem Carey and Jordan Howard on the sideline.

Loggains said that kept the Bears from an extra seven or eight runs “and then all of a sudden the rotation of the running backs gets cut because now (Jeremy) Langford’s playing more because he is the best in pass protection,” Loggains said, adding “the plan doesn’t get executed the way you want.”

There also could be more involvement from the backs in the passing game, as coach John Fox said the screen game “needs work.” They did run a 19-yard play on a screen against Houston that was called back because of offensive pass interference. Loggains said the added continuity on the O-line will help improve that part of the offense, one that takes advantage of the athletic offensive linemen the Bears have compiled this offseason.

Cox has the strength and speed off the snap to get into the backfield, giving the Eagles an interior pass rush. He had a sack last week against the Browns and 9.5 sacks last season, which helped earn him a massive $100 million contract.

Cox has great athleticism for his size, and he’ll challenge Long, a formidable athlete in his own right, who is playing the season through a shoulder injury. Long was effective against the Texans last week, especially on Jeremy Langford’s touchdown plunge. He has the right tools to combat Cox to keep the Eagles’ defensive star away from Jay Cutler. Josh Sitton, if he’s ever up against Cox, will need to use his strength and footwork to win vs.

Cox at the point of attack. Neutralize the star and make other players beat you – that will be the mantra for the Bears’ O-line against Cox. X-factor: Inside linebacker Danny Trevathan – The prize of free agency for the Bears, Trevathan was around the ball often against Houston with 11 tackles. He also blitzed on third down late in the first half for one of the team’s two sacks. Monday night is a prime opportunity in Trevathan’s first game as a Bear at Soldier Field to make more impact plays. Ryan Mathews is not as effective a back as Lamar Miller, and Trevathan should be able to help the front seven limit Mathews and help put Carson Wentz in difficult third- down situations.

Maybe Vic Fangio will consider utilizing Trevathan in a blitzing situation more often after it worked last week.

The inside ‘backer also could help the ‘D’ defend Brent Celek and Darren Sproles in the middle of the field.

Stat to keep in mind: As effective as Wentz was in his debut, and as good as the Eagles’ O-line is, the Browns hit the Eagles’ quarterback nine times last week. The Bears hit Brock Osweiler eight times, but sacked him only twice.

STEELERS 24, BENGALS 16: At Pittsburgh, Ben Roethlisberger threw for 259 yards and three touchdowns to offset a pair of interceptions.

DeAngelo Williams churned out 94 yards on a career-high 32 carries and added a 4-yard touchdown grab. Tight ends Jesse James and Xavier Grimble also caught scoring passes from Roethlisberger as the Steelers (2-0) kept Cincinnati in check at rainy Heinz Field.

Andy Dalton passed for 366 yards and a touchdown, but needed 31 completions to reach that total, working almost exclusively on dump offs to running backs and tight ends while Pittsburgh clamped down on star wide receiver A.J. Green, who had just two receptions for 38 yards.

RAMS 9, SEAHAWKS 3: At Los Angeles,

Greg Zuerlein kicked three field goals, the longest a 47-yarder in the fourth quarter, and the Rams marked the return of pro football to Los Angeles for the first time in nearly 22 years with a win.

BRONCOS 34, COLTS 20: At Denver, Von Miller gave the Denver fans a reminder of his Super Bowl 50 MVP performance, sweeping in for the sackstrip of Andrew Luck that sealed the win.

With the Broncos clinging to a sixpoint lead with 1:51 remaining, Miller burst past right tackle Joe Reitz and swiped the ball from Luck’s grasp. Fellow linebacker Shane Ray scooped up the ball and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown.

Miller added a sack on the last play as the Broncos (2-0) sent the banged-up Colts limping to their third consecutive 0-2 start.

They did it by rattling Luck, who started 5 for 18 before he engineered a couple of second-half touchdown drives. Luck completed just 21 of 40 passes for 197 yards and was sacked five times.

FALCONS 35, RAIDERS 28: At Oakland, Justin Hardy caught a deflected 8-yard touchdown pass to break a tie midway through the fourth quarter.

Matt Ryan threw three TD passes, but got lucky on the go-ahead one in the fourth quarter. His third-down throw to Tevin Coleman was broken up, but the ball bounced high in the air and Hardy caught it in the end zone to put Atlanta (1-1) up, 28-21.

The Raiders (1-1) appeared to tie on the next drive when Amari Cooper caught a 51-yard touchdown pass from Derek Carr. But officials ruled Cooper went out of bounds voluntarily before making the catch, although the Raiders contended he was pushed by Desmond Trufant.

CARDINALS 40, BUCCANEERS 7: At Glendale, Ariz., Carson Palmer threw for 308 yards and three touchdowns and Arizona (1-1) intercepted Jameis Winston four times.

Marcus Cooper, acquired off waivers from Kansas City on Sept. 2, had two interceptions, returning the second 60 yards for a score. Winston also fumbled the ball away once.

Palmer completed 18 of 31 passes with no interceptions before sitting out most of the fourth quarter. All three of Palmer’s scoring passes came in the

first half – to Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Floyd and Jaron Brown.

CHARGERS 38, JAGUARS 14: At San Diego, Philip Rivers matched his career-high with four touchdown passes, including two to Travis Benjamin and Melvin Gordon ran for one score and had his first 100-yard game.

The Chargers (1-1) bounced back from their stunning loss at Kansas City, when they blew a 21-point third-quarter lead and fell, 33-27, in overtime.

The Jaguars started 0-2 for the fourth time in five seasons. They crossed midfield only six times and committed three turnovers.

Gordon, a second-year pro, scored on a 3-yard run on the game’s opening drive, his first TD at Qualcomm Stadium. Gordon went in standing up, and then right guard D.J. Fluker lifted him off the ground in celebration. He finished with 102 yards on 24 carries.

COWBOYS 27, REDSKINS 23: At Landover, Md., Alfred Morris scored the goahead touchdown on a 4-yard run with under five minutes left, leading the Cowboys over his former team.

Washington’s Kirk Cousins threw an end-zone interception that set up a long Dallas drive to the winning score.

With rookie quarterback Dak Prescott looking poised throughout and scrambling for a 6-yard TD run in the second half, Dallas (1-1) won for only the second time in its past 16 games without the injured Tony Romo – and both of those victories came at Washington (0-2). Prescott finished 22 for 30 for 292 yards.

GIANTS 13, SAINTS 10: At East Rutherford, N.J., Eli Manning hit Victor Cruz on a third-down 34-yard pass to set up Josh Brown’s winning 23-yard field goal as time expired. The Giants got off to their first 2-0 start since 2009, while New Orleans lost its second straight.

Brown’s third field goal capped an 11-play, 70-yard drive that featured two key third-down passes by Manning and a pass interference call on a throw to Odell Beckham Jr. The game also was redemption for the Giants’ defense. After allowing Drew Brees to throw for 511 yards and an NFL-tying seven touchdowns, New York limited him to one touchdown, 263 yards passing and 288 yards in total team offense.

RAVENS 25, BRONCOS 20: At Cleveland, Joe Flacco threw two touchdown passes to Mike Wallace and the Ravens rallied from a 20-point first-quarter deficit.

Justin Tucker kicked three field goals and the Ravens (2-0) withstood

Cleveland’s final drive to improve to 15-2 against the Browns under coach John Harbaugh.

C.J. Mosley intercepted Browns quarterback Josh McCown at the goal line with 13 seconds left to seal the win.

McCown stayed in despite an injured left shoulder for the Browns (02), who were hurt by a missed field goal and three costly penalties in the fourth quarter.

PANTHERS 46, 49ERS 27: At Charlotte, N.C., Cam Newton threw for 353 yards and four touchdowns, and the Panthers overcame four turnovers.

Newton threw two TD passes to Kelvin Benjamin and one each to Greg Olsen and Devin Funchess to pass Jake Delhomme for most TD passes in franchise history with 122.

Newton’s first pass was tipped and intercepted by Antoine Bethea, leading to a 49ers field goal. But the 2015 league MVP locked in after that, completing 24 of 40 passes while running for 37 yards on six carries.

Olsen gave the Panthers the lead for good in the second quarter when he hauled in a career-long 78-yard touchdown pass after the 49ers bit hard on play-action. That left the Pro Bowl tight end wide open on a seam route.

Olsen finished with five catches for 122 yards.

TITANS 16, LIONS 15: At Detroit, Marcus Mariota converted a fourth down with a perfectly lofted 9-yard TD pass to Andre Johnson with 1:13 left.

Mariota dropped the pass over linebacker Tahir Whitehead to Johnson just before safety Rafael Bush could get to the veteran receiver.

Tennessee went 93 yards on 13 plays over nearly 6 minutes on the game-winning drive.

The Titans (1-1) ended a five-game losing streak, dating to last December, when Mariota threw two TD passes in the fourth quarter after trailing 15-3.

The Lions (1-1) had an opportunity to drive for a second straight winning field goal, but Matthew Stafford threw an interception to Perrish Cox at midfield in the final minute.

TEXANS 19, CHIEFS 12: At Houston, DeAndre Hopkins had 113 yards receiving and a touchdown and Nick Novak kicked four field goals. Novak connected from 32, 24, 31 and 43 yards for the Texans (2-0).

Cairo Santos made three field goals in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 19-12, but Houston recovered the onside kick with less than a minute left.

Houston’s defense set a franchise record by recovering three fumbles in the first half.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Jimmy Garoppolo had three, first-half touchdown passes before leaving in the second quarter with a right shoulder injury as the New England Patriots outlasted the Miami Dolphins, 31-24, on Sunday.

It was the Patriots’ eighth straight home victory over Miami (0-2). It came at a price as New England (2-0) was dealt another blow at quarterback with Tom Brady already out his four-game “Deflategate” suspension.

Garoppolo’s injury came in a flash.

On third down with less than five minutes left in the first half, he was chased out of the pocket and got off a completion to Malcolm Mitchell. Garoppolo was driven into the ground on his shoulder by Miami linebacker Kiko Alonso.

Garoppolo initially got up, before going down to one knee and being attended to by the training staff. He ended his day 18 of 27 for 234 yards and the three scores.

He was replaced by rookie Jacoby Brissett, who led New England to a touchdown on its first possession of the second half. Brissett was 6 of 9 for 92 yards. LeGarrette Blount rushed 29 times for 123 yards and a touchdown.

Martellus Bennett also had five catches 114 and a touchdown.

Miami rallied in the second half but couldn’t catch up.

The Rams (1-1) still are without a touchdown after losing, 28-0, at San Francisco in their season opener.

With field goals accounting for all the offense, it was hardly the high-scoring show Los Angeles sports fans are known to crave.

Simon Pagenaud wins 1st IndyCar title in a banner Penske year

The Associated Press SONOMA, Calif. – In a yearlong celebration of Roger Penske’s 50th year in racing, Simon Pagenaud brought yet another championship trophy to one of the most storied organizations in motorsports.

The Frenchman won his first career IndyCar title in his sophomore season driving for Penske, and did it in dominating fashion by winning the season finale Sunday at Sonoma Raceway.

Pagenaud only needed a smooth race to put a wrap on this breakthrough season.

Instead, he picked up his fifth win of the year and led a strong Penske finish to the final podium. The Penske team went 1-2-3 in the final series standings, the first team to do so since another Penske trio pulled off the sweep in 1994.

“That was a strong run and I take my hat off to the entire team,” Penske said.

A 14th IndyCar title – and 29th in various forms of motorsports – was guaranteed at the start of the race because only Pagenaud and teammate Will Pow-

er were mathematically eligible to win the title.

Pagenaud entered the weekend 43 points ahead of Power, but earned an additional point for winning the pole.

Then he led the most laps and won a race that was worth double points in the standings.

“My whole career has been about this day, reaching this level,” Pagenaud said. “For an athlete, it’s what you work for.”

Pagenaud’s performance was a moot point, however: Power had mechanical issues 38 laps into the race that sealed the outcome.

Probably needing to win to unseat Pagenaud, Power instead finished 20th.

Pagenaud’s final margin was 127 points, the largest points win since Alex Zanardi defeated teammate Jimmy Vasser by 119 points in 1998.

“It was pretty realistic considering it was (worth) double points,” Power said.

“It’s just how it flows, when it’s your year, it’s your year, and Simon has done a phenomenal job to lead a 1-2-3 finish.”

Power finished second in the standings and Helio Castroneves was third.

Stewart, Storm clinch 7th seed in playoffs The ASSOCIATED PRESS SEATTLE – Breanna Stewart scored 18 points, Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis added 16 and the Seattle Storm clinched the seventh seed in the WNBA playoffs with an 88-75 victory over the Sky on Sunday night. Seattle will play at Atlanta in the opening round of the playoffs.

Stewart also grabbed 11 rebounds, including her 277th defensive one of the season to pass Lisa Leslie’s WNBA record of 276 set in 2004. The Storm had just a 63-61 lead at the end of the third af-

The Storm needed to win to secure the seed after Phoenix beat the San Antonio Stars earlier. The Mercury will be the No. 8 seed.

Simple Epley maneuver can relieve symptoms of vertigo Dear Dr. K: I suffer from benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. I’ve heard something called the Epley maneuver may help. Could you explain what this is?

Dear Reader: Vertigo is the sensation that either your body or your environment is moving, usually spinning. Vertigo can be a symptom of many different illnesses and disorders. The type of vertigo you have – benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) – is the most common form. As you’ve probably experienced, simply changing the position of your head can cause a sudden spinning sensation.

Inside the ear are three tiny canals that help us recognize the position of our body in space and maintain balance. Inside the canals are fluid and tiny hairs attached to nerve endings. The way the fluid washes against the hairs changes when your body is in different positions. When the fluid moves the hairs, nerve signals are sent to the brain.

Those signals get translated in a way that lets you know what position your body is in.

BPPV occurs when tiny calcium crystals form in the inner ear and become dislodged.

They bang around the canals and touch the sensitive nerve endings inside. The brain starts to get conflicting signals. You experience this as a sensation of your body moving around in the world (or the world spinning around your body).

If you have BPPV, simply looking up or rolling over in bed can dislodge crystals and cause brief bouts of extreme dizziness.

Vertigo can feel like the room is spinning or as though you are spinning in the room.

It can be just a sense of imbalance, but it also can cause nausea, vomiting and

One treatment for BPPV is the Epley maneuver. In this maneuver, a doctor or physical therapist moves your head and body through a series of positions. You also can learn to do it yourself. You begin by lying on an examination table. The therapist gently moves your head to the left and right, then has you roll over and sit up.

Each position moves the loose crystals through the ear canal, repositioning them to relieve symptoms. Your symptoms may improve in as little as 10 minutes. Your doctor also may provide specific exercises for you to continue at home.

For more persistent vertigo, your doctor may recommend something called balance rehabilitation. The types of exercises prescribed will depend upon what movements provoke your symptoms.

The Epley maneuver and several similar exercises have given relief to many people with BPPV. Before these maneuvers were discovered, the vertigo ultimately would go away on its own, but it could take weeks.

These maneuvers speed the improvement – from weeks to minutes. Unfortunately, attacks of vertigo do often return, but the maneuvers help drive them away.

DEAR ABBY am 32, married for a year and Jeanne a half, with no Phillips children yet. I am an only child who was raised by my mother until I was 14 because my father was in prison. My mother never remarried. She blames me for her never having found anyone, and she is resentful of my marriage. She doesn’t get along with anyone, not family, co-workers or “friends.”

I’m afraid the day I tell her I’m pregnant her response will be laced with disdain and judgment, and I believe she will use my children as pawns like she used me to manipulate my dad.

I have seen a therapist about this, but I’m having a hard time following through on what needs to be done. My therapist suggests I tell Mom how I feel and let her know if she continues with her current behavior, I will have to limit the amount of time we see each other.

Abby, she has said some really hurtful things to me in the past. I know her behavior is wrong, but I continue trying to be the daughter I am supposed to be so we can hopefully have the relationship we are supposed to have. Dear Abby: I’m interning with a government-contracted group. Part of my job involves working with LGBT rights organizations.

Recently, at a meeting with my boss and several representatives of these organizations, the topic of fairness in the workplace was mentioned.

I was asked what my experience was, and I shared I thought the workplace was fair. I didn’t think about it at the time, but I now realize I was being asked how my experience was as an LGBT person. My boss has nominated me for a diversity award. The problem is I’m a heterosexual female, and I think he promoted me for the honor because he thinks I am gay.

How should I handle this? Do I need to go on record to my boss that I am straight, that I have a boyfriend, and he misunderstood me? I don’t want this to come back to haunt me, but I’m afraid addressing it may ruin my credibility because it has taken so long for me to address it.

My sexual orientation obviously is not something of great interest at work, but I feel I am living a terrible lie, and I don’t know how to fix this. – Ashamed In D.C. Dear Ashamed: No one should feel compelled to disclose one’s sexual orientation at work, no matter the circumstances. That said, in this particular case, go to your boss before this goes any further. Explain to him privately you didn’t realize when the question was asked that anyone would presume you were gay. If you accept the diversity award without clearing the air first, it potentially could be a source of embarrassment and jeopardize your credibility.
