CDM Smith recommended for Will County freight mobility plan study

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A committee assembled to guide the Will County Community Friendly Freight Mobility Plan interviewed four firms Wednesday and settled on a top pick.

The committee, composed of five Will County Board members and other county officials, spent about four hours interviewing AECOM, TranSystems, CDM Smith and Parsons Brinckerhoff.

Committee members took notes while each firm presented for 30 minutes based on a series of talking points given in advance by the committee. After each presentation, the committee held 15-minute question-and-answer sessions using questions that the firms had not seen before the meeting.

After all the presentations were complete, the committee members each listed their top three choices. Members agreed that TranSystems came in last, and thus, removed the firm from the discussion.

Will County Center for Economic Development CEO John Greuling said that while the top concern is securing grant dollars, he was disappointed in each presentation’s lack of focus on how to address workforce mobility.

Ann Schneider, who the Will County Board approved Aug. 18 to manage the mobility plan, credited Parsons Brinckerhoff as being the only firm to point out that the U.S. Department of Transportation could do another round of FASTLANE grants before the end of the year.

The grant application season is usually in the spring, but the current federal administration may give more money for projects before it leaves office.

“Who thought politics would get involved?” County Board Speaker Jim Moustis, R-Frankfort, joked.

Parsons Brinckerhoff was adamant it has resources in place that will allow the county to apply for grants by Thanksgiving if needed.

The consensus seemed to be that CDM Smith had the most well-rounded presentation.

Closures proposed as part of First Midwest acquisition of Standard

mmallory@shawmedia.com First Midwest Bank has applied to close 16 branches, many of which are in Will and Grundy counties, in a move that corresponds with the proposed $365 million acquisition of Standard Bank & Trust Co. announced in June.

Of the 16, six are First Midwest Bank locations and 10 are Standard Bank locations, said Jim Roolf, Joliet Banking Center President at First Midwest Bank.

The application is being reviewed by Federal Reserve Bank regulators and hinges on closure of the Standard Bank purchase deal, which is projected to happen late this year or early next year, Roolf said.

Standard Bank currently operates 35 locations.

On Thursday, the full Will County Board is expected to vote whether to authorize Will County Highway Engineer Bruce Gould to enter into negotiations with the firms.

If the action is approved, Gould would negotiate with CDM Smith. If that falls through, he’d then move on to Parsons Brinckerhoff, and so on.

The study, aimed largely at putting Will County in position to secure big-ticket federal and state transportation grants, but also at addressing workforce mobility and livability issues, is expected to cost in the hundreds of thousands of dollars and be completed by April 2017.

Gould, who is on the committee, said he was surprised and disappointed AECOM did not correlate any of its work on the Will Connects 2040 plan to its proposal Wednesday.

In Joliet, First Midwest Bank is proposing closing and consolidating the 2398 Essington Road Standard Bank branch into the 1301 N. Larkin Ave. First Midwest Bank branch.

First Midwest Bank also has applied to close and consolidate its 2320 S. Route 59 branch in Plainfield into the 970 Brook Forest Ave. Shorewood Standard Bank branch that is 1.8 miles to the south.

In Lockport, First Midwest Bank is proposing to close and consolidate the 16545 W. 159th St. Standard Bank branch into the 800 S. State St. First Midwest Bank branch, which also is in Lockport.

Other proposed closures and consolidations in Will County include banks in New Lenox, Mokena and Bolingbrook.

As for Grundy County, First Midwest Bank is proposing consolidation of the Standard Bank at 1111 W. Route 6 in Morris into the First Midwest Bank at 444 Bedford Road in Morris, just 0.6 miles to the east.

Standard Bank announced in November 2015 a complete rebuild of its bank at 1433 Lisbon St. in Morris, across from the 444 Bedford Road First Midwest Bank.

Roolf said First Midwest may review in a year or two how to roll service into the new location. The new Standard Bank was projected to open in 2017.

Roolf said employees in branches that may be consolidated have been notified of the developments but no decisions have been made yet about how staffing will be modified.

Nothing is official until there is regulatory approval, the Standard Bank deal is closed on and First Midwest Bank executes its consolidation plan. Roolf said clients will be given plenty of notice in advance of operational changes.

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Race Fan Rally was a night to get revved up for NASCAR weekend whether you were going to the races or not.

Barbara Woolf, in town from Big Bear, California, was going.

“I just went to Darlington, Richmond, and now I’m here,” Woolf said, checking off the tracks she had been to before Joliet and then listing where she was headed next. “We’re going to New Hampshire, and then we’re going to Dover.”

Woolf was at Race Fan Rally on Wednesday with Kathleen McDonald of Des Plaines. The two became friends three years ago on Twitter tweeting about NASCAR. Now, they get together at NASCAR races and rallies.

McDonald has never missed a race at Chicagoland Speedway, but this was her first Race Fan Rally in Joliet.

Family Harvest Church out of Tinley Park had a table at Race Fan Rally,

“The whole idea is we can come out and talk with people about church and about God. This is a different avenue to reach people,” said Greg Mattes of Plainfield.

Mattes’ 9-year-old son, Ryker, races the car in a youth mini cup series, where speeds can reach 75 mph, and the church sponsorship of the car draw’s attention.

“People are interested because it’s unique to have a church on the car,” Mattes said.

Joliet D-86 board adopts fiscal 2017 budget

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet School District 86 Board unanimously adopted the fiscal 2017 budget Wednesday, which included several personnel changes.

District officials budgeted about $163 million in revenue and $159 million in expenses, with a surplus of $3.7 million.

In a presentation to the board, Tamara Mitchell, assistant superintendent for business and financial services, said there were a few changes to the budget since the last time it was shown to the board at the Aug. 10 finance committee meeting.

Those changes included two paraprofessionals at Culbertson Elementary School, two paraprofessionals at Sandburg Elementary School and one special education teacher at Washington Junior High and Academy.

“Upon [Superintendent Theresa Rouse] doing her walk-through the buildings, she noticed that Eisenhower was the only building that had one clerical staff member,” Mitchell said.

Also added was a district translator, who will be working with Sandy Zalewski, who would have a job title change with salary adjustment as she becomes the district’s director for communications and development.

Another change Mitchell noted was

a net staff reduction of six positions.

In Mitchell’s review of the changes from the fiscal 2016 to the 2017 budget, she said local revenue is lower because of the state’s corporate personal property replacement tax calculation error.

She said all taxing bodies in Illinois received a notice about this error.

She also said general state aid is higher because of 100 percent funding from the state and federal revenue is lower because of funding reduction.

In projections of funds – such as education and operation and maintenance – all of them showed surpluses with the exception of IMRF/SS, capital proj-

ects, tort and fire prevention and safety funds.

The budget includes a levy for the fire prevention and safety fund, according to Mitchell’s presentation. The funds will be used toward the cost of the 10-year life-safety survey and life safety projects.

However, the budget does not include other capital improvements that have been discussed, and a facility assessment is pending, her presentation stated.

As in the August finance committee meeting, Mitchell said the fiscal 2017 budget surplus was largely because of a one-time $3.39 million general state aid equity grant, and this year is the first time since fiscal 2009 that general state aid will be fully funded.

“The state is in the process of again looking at the general state aid formula.

Mini cup racers have grown up to be NASCAR racers, Naples said.

Adults race them, too, he said, and they can reach speeds of 100 mph. But CSR Super Cups specializes in teaching kids as young as 8 how to race, starting on a simulator.

The mini cup cars inspired Eileen Maniquez, 6, of Joliet to proclaim herself a “huge” racing fan.

“She likes the cars – the little cars,” her mother, Patricia, said.

Patricia Maniquez comes to Race Fan Rally every year, and she thinks the experience is good for her children, too.

“I think it’s great to know a little about everything, and they can see what’s going on in the community,” Maniquez said.

Maniquez has been to Chicagoland Speedway for NASCAR weekend once and said she likes “the vibe and the people and the atmosphere and the adrenalin” of the races.

Brad Morris of Joliet goes to the races when he can. He’s working this weekend, but was able to make it to Race Fan Rally.

“It hypes you up,” she said. “You see new people and meet NASCAR people.”

Arguments in the bench trial for Charles “C.J.” McCullum, 24, ended Wednesday with defense attorney George Lenard presenting separate evaluations from a Charles “C.J.” psychologist and a psy- McCullum chiatrist that found McCullum was “psychotic at the time of the offense and unable to appreciate the criminality of his conduct.” Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes is hearing the case instead of a jury.

On March 20, 2013, McCullum allegedly choked Jeanie Parker in a bedroom at their home in the 100 block of Fifth Avenue. McCullum then used two knives to fatally stab his mother and used a baseball bat to hammer one in.

Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Fred Harvey said physical evidence recovered when Parker’s body was found in the river three weeks later corroborated the information McCullum gave police hours after the slaying.

“An autopsy showed over 100 stab wounds in her body and an X-ray showed the 8-inch blade from [a broken] knife went all the way through her spine,” Harvey said.

Lenard said McCullum had a long, documented history of schizophrenia and had been hospitalized months before his mother’s death and prescribed medication he wasn’t taking.

McCullum told police he felt his mother wanted him to kill his brother and that she needed to be “sacrificed” so he could become a professional basketball player, according to trial testimony.

His erratic behavior continued while he was being held at the Will County Jail and would “dance naked and sing in his cell,” Lenard said.

“It took about three months of medication at the jail for him to come around and realize he wasn’t going to the NBA and his mother was dead,” Lenard said.

McCullum told a psychologist he’d put his mother’s body in the water because he’d read in the Bible it would “refresh” her and “he thought she’d come back and be OK,” Lenard said.

“After careful consideration, we determined we cannot overcome the defense’s assertion that he was insane beyond a reasonable doubt,” Assistant State’s Attorney Mike Fitzgerald said.

“Because of that, our office has an obligation not to challenge that assertion.”

Although McCullum could be found “not guilty by reason of insanity” when Alessio Policandriotes announces her decision Friday, she could order him to be committed to a mental institution for up to 65 years.

CHICAGO – A former Joliet police officer is facing federal criminal charges for allegedly using unreasonable force against a woman while on duty four years ago.

Thomas O’Connor, 40, deprived the woman of her constitutional right “to be free from the use of unreasonable force by a police officer protected by the Fourth Amendment,” according to an indictment filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court.

On Feb. 9, 2012, O’Connor was dispatched to Star Inn, 2219 W. Jefferson

St. in Joliet, where Shantique Jackson and her former boyfriend were arguing. Jackson told The Herald-News in 2012 that when she attempted to kick her ex in the groin, O’Connor grabbed her, slammed her onto the hood of a car and punched her face 10 to 20 times.

She sustained two black eyes, a nasal fracture and bruises on her face and scalp.

O’Connor was fired from the police department four days after the incident and charged with aggravated battery, battery and official misconduct.

During a trial in June 2013, he testified he’d punched her as many times as necessary to gain control of a chaotic

situation, according to Herald-News files. A jury deliberated for about two hours before finding O’Connor not guilty.

IDOT installs new feature at ramps on Interstate 55 SHAW MEDIA CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation has a new safety feature that will be installed at various expressway ramps, including one in Will County, during the next few months.

Speed indicator boards will be installed in five locations in District 1, which includes Cook, Lake, McHenry, Kane, DuPage, and Will counties, targeting ramps with a history of speed-related crashes, according to a news release from IDOT. Starting this week, speed indicator boards will be installed on southbound Interstate 55 to Arsenal Road, as well as northbound Interstate 55 to northbound I-294, according to the news release.

Other locations in the state include northbound Route 53 to westbound Lake Cook Road; northbound Route 53 to eastbound Lake Cook Road; and eastbound I-290 to eastbound Route 64/

eastbound Route 20 North Ave/Lake Street “The installation project is part of a host of safety improvements being implemented to reduce speeds and improve safety on all Illinois roads,” IDOT said in the news release. “The advisory speed signs will alert motorists of their speed in an effort to reduce roadway departure crashes on ramps. The speed indicator boards are a first for District 1, but have been implemented downstate with early results showing a noticeable decrease in crashes.”

Installation of these signs will require daytime shoulder closures, with installation at each location expected to take three to four days. The project, which is funded through the Highway Safety Improvement program, is expected to be completed during the fall 2016.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through these areas.

Village attorney David Silverman brought the board the consideration of a resolution with respect to a proposed tax increment financing district in Shorewood.

“This is just the next step in the process of exploration of the tax increment finance district,” Silverman said.

The board approved the resolution with member Dan Anderson passing, because of his ownership of land in the proposed TIF district. The resolution addressed the need for a public meeting at staff level, created the need to establish an interested parties registry where residents can sign up and be copied on documentation and authorized reimbursement of costs for the village in relation to the TIF district.

SHOREWOOD – As soon as the ground thaws in 2017, the village of Shorewood will begin the four-month construction of a new park in the Kipling Estates subdivision on Wynstone Drive called Lake Forrest Park.

At the Village Board meeting Tuesday, Village Administrator Roger Barrowman reintroduced a plan for the park that had been on hold for the past 10 months. Half of the project was to be funded by an Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development grant through the state, but because of the budget impasse, those funds were not available at the time.

Now, $400,000 of the $839,000 in park costs will be paid via the match grant.

Community Development Director Karen James said OSLAD matched what the village could match, and the other $439,000 was used from the village land cash account.

Eric Hornig of Hitchcock Designs presented the park layout to the board to display all of the amenities it will include. Main points to the park were an asphalt trail loop system with three fitness stations, a splash pad with air and ground sprays, a playground with appropriate equipment for ages 2 to 12, practice baseball and soccer fields, a butterfly garden and multiple shelters and shade sails.

The board unanimously approved the project and the $86,400 professional agreement with Hitchcock Designs, which was included in the $439,000 price.

“The feedback from Plainfield, who adopted the program in May, has been positive,” Morley said.

The ordinance to allow the service was approved with board member Anthony Luciano objecting.

Manteno man dies after crash in Monee-Beecher area

MONEE – A 61-year-old Manteno man died following a two-car crash early Wednesday.

Daniel L. Wrona was pronounced dead at 7:05 a.m. Wednesday at the scene, on Pauling Road east of Highland Avenue, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

Will County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said deputies were called at 3:30 a.m. to the site of the crash, which is in the Monee-Beecher area.

“When deputies arrived they observed a Toyota in the south ditch off the roadway and a Ford van on the roadway,” she said.

Initial reports indicate the Ford crossed the center line and struck the Toyota headon, according to Hoffmeyer.

Wrona was the driver of the Toyota. Preliminary autopsy results reveal he suffered multiple injuries due to crash, according to the Coroner’s Office, although the final cause of death is pending police, toxicological and autopsy reports.

The driver of the Ford van, Henry N. Farmer, 31, of Beecher, was taken to Franciscan Health Olympia Fields for injuries to his face and arms, Hoffmeyer said. Farmer was charged with improper lane use and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Child taken to hospital after Homer Township school bus crash

HOMER TOWNSHIP – One child was taken to a hospital after a school bus crash Wednesday in Homer Township.

The Will County Sheriff’s Office responded at 10:57 a.m. to the crash site near Gougar Road, just north of Shady Lane, Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Tom Budde said. Budde said the bus driver was traveling south on Gougar Road when he became momentarily distracted because his coat flew off a hook in the bus and out an open window. In his distraction, the driver steered the bus into a guardrail, Budde said. The bus hit the rail, left the road and coasted about 20 feet before stopping in a wooded area.

After the crash, several children complained of minor shoulder pain and all but one were released by emergency personnel, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release. One child was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, Budde said. All attend Oak Prairie Junior High School, which is located on Gougar Road, north of the scene of the crash.

The driver, who was uninjured, was affiliated with First Student Inc. in Crest Hill, Budde said. No citations were issued, according to the news release.

News release issued Wednesday During the Wednesday afternoon news conference, ISP Capt. Richard Wilk said several items of evidence were gathered Tuesday from Andersen’s home, located at 204 Eighth St. in Standard, and three occupants of the residence were interviewed after officers obtained and executed a search warrant for the residence. ISP did not divulge the names of those interviewed, other than Andersen.

Dewey’s case has been switched from a missing person search to a death investigation, police said Wednesday morning.

Wilk said the investigation into the death of Dewey remains open and ongoing. No further information was released during the brief news conference, and officers said they would not answer any further questions.

Assisting agencies in the case include Illinois State Police, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, LaSalle Police Department, Peru Police Department, Putnam County State’s Attorney and Spring Valley Police Department.

Chris Dewey, the son of Deborah Dewey, who was actively helping police in the search for his mother, did not immediately return phone messages.

STANDARD – The Illinois State Police confirmed Wednesday morning the body of a missing Ladd woman was found in a shallow grave at a residence in Standard, and a man has been charged with concealing her death.

Deborah K. Dewey, 62, of Ladd was last seen Aug. 22 in Spring Deborah Valley. Her 2007 Buick K. Dewey LaCrosse was discovered in Morris on Aug. 29 at R-Place Restaurant just north of Interstate 80.

The vehicle was unlocked and undamaged; her purse still was in the vehicle.

Clifford A. Andersen, 66, of Standard was charged with concealment of death, a Class 4 felony, and is currently being held at the Bureau County Jail on a $750,000 bond, law enforcement officials announced at a Wednesday afternoon news conference held at ISP District 17 Headquarters in LaSalle.

Police converged on Standard on Monday, when ISP and the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office began searching the residence at 104 Fifth St., as well as surrounding property, which is located alongside Illinois Route 71.

“Investigators exhumed a body from a shallow grave located in the yard of the residence,” ISP said in a news release issued Wednesday morning.

The body was transported by the Putnam County death investigator to Bloomington for an autopsy. Using dental records, the preliminary results of the autopsy determined the body was that of Dewey.

For the fourth year in a row, Shorewood HUGS has teamed up with the MCHS volleyball team to raise funds for the charity in order to honor a wish for someone in the midst of struggle. Wishes come in the form of gift card donations, tangible items needed or services.

MCHS head volleyball coach Carrie Prosek said the team raised more than $1,300 for the HUGS program.

This year, Niccum’s wish was No. 500 for the “Wishes and Hugs” program, which was established in 2010 under the Shorewood HUGS organization, which began in 2008.

In past years, the two groups have helped MCHS teacher Sam Pavelka, the late Mike Assaf and the late Shawn Capodice, who were MCHS teachers, and last year, the Braun family from Minooka to aid in their special-needs adoption from China.

Prosek said she sat in her office one afternoon and tried to think of a recipient for the “Hits for Hugs” wish. She spoke with her officemate, MCHS Arrowettes dance team coach Melissa Wallace, and Wallace immediately said, “Cadence.”

Niccum graduated from MCHS in 2015 and was one of the captains of the Arrowettes dance team. In February 2015, while still in high school, she found a lump in her neck and her doctor prescribed steroid therapy. She had a biopsy, and the results were negative for cancer.

She graduated and left for college at Illinois State University to major in dance teacher education, and dance on the Redline Dance Express at the school.

She found more lumps in her chest and over winter break of 2015 was diagnosed with Stage 3 Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

“They think that the steroids were the reason results came back negative for cancer in February,” Niccum said.

“But after the diagnosis, I was determined to finish my second semester of my freshman year, so I found a doctor down there and took chemotherapy treatments for five hours every two weeks.”

Ernest C. Cutler, age 79 of Crest Hill, formerly of both Romeoville and Aurora, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2016, at Joliet Community Hospice in Joliet. He was born on April 7, 1937, in Boston, MA, the son of Ernest C. and Mary (McPhee) Cutler Sr. Ernest was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lockport. Mr. Cutler served his country proudly in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle who will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

He was a true pioneer in his field and was recognized by industries throughout the United States as one of the leading experts on dealing with the personal issues of employees. In 1988, he established his own human resources consulting firm, DeRosa, Pierce and Associates Inc. headquartered in Burr Ridge, where he served as its CEO until his retirement in 1999.

Joe was an avid bicyclist and liked riding the trails in Illinois and Wisconsin. He also enjoyed wood carving, reading, history and cars. Most of all, Joe loved his family and wished to be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and grateful immigrant.

Joe is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carole; son, Eric (Tara) DeRosa of Libertyville; son, Adam DeRosa (Michelle Rose) of Gurnee; daughter, Amy DeRosa of Frankfort; and grandchildren, Anna and Samuel.

Joseph J. DeRosa, 83, New Lenox, passed away on Monday, Sept. 12, 2016, at his home surrounded by his family and friends.

He was born on Nov. 10, 1932, in Cosenza, Italy. He was preceded in death by his parents Eugenio and Angelina (Ricchio) DeRosa; and brother, Mario DeRosa.

Joe came to the United States at the age of 6 just before the outbreak of World War II in Europe. He grew up in the Lakeside neighborhood of Racine, WI, an area many Italian and Hungarian immigrants resided. He graduated from Washington Park High School in Racine and continued on to the University of Wisconsin Whitewater to pursue his bachelor’s degree, but his education was interrupted during the Korean War. Joe served in Trieste, Italy, and after completing his military service he returned to the University of Wisconsin where he received his master’s degree in clinical social work in 1958. Shortly after his graduation, Joe married his high school classmate, Carole Jensen, on Aug. 16, 1958.

Joe had a varied and interesting career as a licensed clinical social worker with the state of Wisconsin and as a hospital administrator of a private mental health and addiction hospital. In 1974, Joe accepted a position as the director of

Kathleen Frances Glenn (nee Miller), age 89, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Saturday, Sept.

10, 2016, at Rock Run Place in Joliet.

Kathleen was born at home on the family farm in Homer Township on Feb. 1, 1927 and was a lifelong Joliet area resident.

Her early childhood education was at the Marley School, a one-room schoolhouse. She attended Joliet Township High School in Joliet. After leaving school, she was employed by her uncle, Laurence J. Wilhelmi, M.D., in 1946 and later by the Woolworth Co. in 1947. On Feb. 1, 1947, Kathleen married the love of her life, Norman L. Glenn, and became a homemaker. After many years at home raising their eight children, she went back to work at Rax Roast Beef, Armandos and Town & Country Bowling Alley.

Kathleen enjoyed roller-skating, traveling, baking pies, playing bingo, sewing, coloring and doing puzzles. In addition to her hobbies and activities, she loved spending time with her family. On any given day, you could find her and Dad at home relaxing on the swing in the back yard. They also made a special attempt to go to St Joe’s Park every Sunday in the summer.

They would stay all day listening to the music and dancing to their favorite songs. They were a couple known by many, loved by all and will be missed.

Preceded in death by her loving husband of 68 years, Norman L. Glenn (March 9, 2015); her parents, Laurence A. Miller (1887-1961), Frances C. (Wilhelmi 1890-1980) Miller; three sisters, Hazel (late Joseph) Partak, Virginia (late Ray) Paul and Marilyn “Mitzi” (Jack) McGuire; and two brothers, Don (late Shirley) Miller and Harold (late Pearl) Miller.

She is survived by her beloved children, Vicki (Chuck) Woods of Corona, CA, Joy (late David) Videtich of Grayslake, Patricia (Larry) Musson of

Leonard J. Lewandowski, age 76, passed away on Monday, Sept. 12, 2016, after a short illness.

Born in Joliet, to Anthony and Ann Lewandowski on Aug. 27, 1940, and later moved to Freeport to be near family.

Len is survived by sisters, Marcia (Joseph) Bardi of Fresno, CA, and Diane (Allen) Drew of Freeport; sister-in-Law, Sue Lewandowski of Rockford; brothers, David Lewandowski of Freeport and John Lewandowski of Bettendorf, IA; nieces, Allison (David) Collins, Melody Henson and Rebecca (Dan) Thompson; nephews, Christopher Bardi, Dan Lewandowski, Brian Lewandowski, Mark (Audra) Lewandowski, Tim (Elissa) Lewandowski and Quinn Henson; and numerous cousins. Len is predeceased by his parents and brother, Anthony Jr. Len was a conscientious person and believed in hard work. He was a proud four-year active duty member of the U.S. Air Force as a mechanical technician on numerous different fighter planes stationed in Guam. EARL EDWARD MEISINGER Born: July 27, 1920 Died: Sept. 13, 2016

Earl Edward Meisinger, age 96, a lifelong resident of the Naperville area, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2016, at Edwards Hospital in Naperville.

He was born July 27, 1920, in Lemont. He was the husband of the late Margaret Claire Meisinger (nee Diehl) whom he married on May 29, 1943. They had just celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary only days before her passing on June 4, 2015.

Their marriage was blessed with seven children, five of whom are still alive. They include Dennis (Virginia), David (Victoria), D. Jeanne (Jen), Dana (Randy Gaddy) and Derryl. Two sons preceded them in death. They were Dale (Patsy) and Dean. They had 14 grandchildren of whom 11 survive. They have eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Earl was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Cecelia (nee Jungels) Meisinger. All his five siblings are still living including Irene Bastiaans, Loretta (Richard) Callender, Rosemary (Nick) Moore and Kenneth (Kathleen), and Donald (Elaine) Meisinger.

Earl was a farmer almost all of his life. Along with family help, he farmed over 1,000 acres in the 1960s, making his farming operation one of the largest around. He was a typical family farmer raising all species of livestock, most crops typical of this area and several varieties of peacocks and game birds. He also had custom corn picking, baling, combining, silage chopping and snow plowing businesses over the years. For 10 years, he worked at the U.S. Post Office as a mail carrier part time, mostly during Christmas holidays.

Earl was always a great cook and cooked professionally for LaBianco’s Restaurant in Lisle for many years, and had a very successful catering business. The entire family always looked

forward to his meals for the variety and flavor, much of it provided by his large produce garden.

Later in his life, after they moved from the farm, Earl was a successful real estate salesman, Lazy Boy chair salesman, and also handed out food samples at the local grocery stores for a while.

Earl was an organization man, having belonged to and presided over many during his long life. He was a member of the Will County Farm Bureau since 1944 and served as president from 1970 to 72. He served as president of the Valley View School Board. He was a charter and life member of the Joliet Junior College Foundation Board. He was an organizer and past member of the Fountaindale Library in Bolingbrook and Romeoville.

He was a member of the Wheatland Township Cemetery Board and the Naperville Postal Consumer Advisory Council. He also served as president of the Madame Alexander Doll Club, secretary-treasurer of the Shirley Temple Collectors Inc., president of the Modern Doll Collectors Inc., president of the Wheatland Plowing Match Association and president of the Illinois Game and Pet Breeders Society.

SCOTT L. SULLIVAN Scott L. Sullivan, age 62, passed away peacefully on Friday, Sept. 9, 2016, with his wife Terry at his side.

He was born in Joliet and lived the majority of his life as a Lockport resident. Scott was a graduate of Lockport Township High School and was a member of the school Band. Scott’s love for music did not fade with age. Throughout his adult years, he was a member of both Phase III and Class VI bands as lead singer and bass player. He was a member of the Lockport Moose Lodge 1557 and was a longtime employee for the city of Lockport. Scott enjoyed spending time with his friends whether it was duck hunting, fishing, camping or bowling. However, Scott would be the first to tell you that his greatest joy in life was spending time with his family.

Scott was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Marion “Dutchy” Sullivan.

He is survived by his wife, Terry (Marden) Sullivan; his children, Nick (Alisa) Sullivan, Tony (Jordan Savage, fiance) Sullivan, Melissa (Jason) Vlachos and Chuck Ritzler; four grandchildren, Phoenix, Jackson, Paxton and Olivia; and best friends, Bob Cialoni and family and Sue Stech and family.

DONALD E. VRANICH Donald E. Vranich, age 82, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Monday, Sept. 12, 2016.

Donald is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Pat (nee Bolte); loving children, Donald and Laura Vranich; dear nieces and nephews, Ronald Jr., Brian, Susan and Julie; special niece, Patti; and brother-in-law, Ronald (Judith) Bolte. He is survived by his loving wife, Darla; his daughters, Elizabeth, Ann-Marie and Virginia Hayes; one brother, John Hayes of Joliet; and one nephew, Dan Hayes of Joliet. Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his good friend, Don Boseo.

He was a life master and brilliant bridge player at national tournaments and local clubs. Also an avid Chicago Cubs and Green Bay Packers fan.

Biggest street gang trial in recent Chicago history begins

CHICAGO – Six purported leaders of Chicago’s powerful Hobos street gang went on trial Wednesday in a case that could provide a rare look inside the kind of criminal activity fueling gun violence in the nation’s third-largest city.

A prosecutor displayed photos of killing scenes and held up assault rifles during opening statements, telling jurors the defendants murdered, maimed and tortured their way into controlling lucrative drug markets on Chicago’s South Side. The trial is the biggest of its kind in recent city history and could take up to three months.

The six men charged with racketeering conspiracy were not “a group of misguided youth” but “an all-star team of the worst of the worst” who “terrorized the city,” federal prosecutor Patrick Otlewski said.

He told jurors, “You will look into the eyes of murderers ... every day.”

CHICAGO – The wife of former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. has been transferred from a federal prison camp to a halfway house where she will complete the remainder of a yearlong sentence for filing false income tax returns.

Former Chicago city councilwoman Sandi Jackson was moved Tuesday from the Federal Prison Camp at Alderson, West Virginia, to what’s known as a residential re-entry center.

CHICAGO – The city of Chicago has asked a judge to overturn an Illinois attorney general’s binding opinion that police officers’ personal emails concerning a white officer’s fatal shooting of a black teenager are public record.

The city filed the complaint Tuesday in Cook County Circuit Court, arguing that officers’ personal emails are not subject to the Freedom of Information Act, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

The attorney general’s public access counselor ruled last month that the Chicago Police Department violated public records laws when it denied the

The counselor’s opinion has the force of law, requiring the police to search officers’ private accounts and turn over relevant emails.

A CNN producer made a FOIA request for emails a dozen officers exchanged in October and November 2014 about the shooting. In response, the police department supplied more than 700 pages of records but denied part of CNN’s request.

CNN asked the Illinois attorney general to review the case.

Poe, Chester and four other co-defendants all have pleaded not guilty. If convicted, they each face up to life in prison.

The onus is on government attorneys in a racketeering case to demonstrate a pattern of criminal behavior by the defendants within a carefully organized structure. Another defense attorney, Carl Clavelli, said the Hobos often acted haphazardly as individuals and did not meet the racketeering test.

“This is not like the mafia or the Ku Klux Klan where members come and go and the organization persists,” he told jurors.

The men’s motives for killing, the prosecutor said, fell into three categories: killing to boost their status and territory, killing over drugs, and killing to eliminate those cooperating with law enforcement, such as Daniels, who only days earlier had testified against the Hobos before a grand jury.

The judge ordered that jurors’ names be kept secret to ensure they are not subject to intimidation. U.S. marshals have said they already are investigating reported threats against several likely witnesses.

Airports in Chicago, Rockford get $36M in federal grants

CHICAGO – Airports in Chicago and Rockford are receiving a combined $36.5 million in federal grants to make improvements and address concerns about noise.

U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin and Mark Kirk, U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced the grants Tuesday.

Midway International Airport in Chicago is receiving $17.5 million for sound insulation on residences near the airport.

O’Hare International Airport is receiving about $13 million.

That amount includes money for repairs to a runway and for an environmental impact study.

Rockford International Airport is receiving about $6 million to fund part of a 30,000-square-foot terminal expansion, allowing the airport to meet increased passenger demand.

Cost of Lollapalooza cleanup at Chicago park nearly doubles

CHICAGO – The cost of cleaning up Chicago’s Grant Park after this summer’s Lollapalooza music festival nearly doubled compared with last year, reaching $453,000.

The tab is picked up by the organizers, not taxpayers.

The festival was lengthened from three to four days this year to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

Grant Park Conservancy President Bob O’Neill told WBBMTV that the extra day boosted the crowd to 400,000 people, compared with 300,000 last year.

O’Neill said the bigger crowd and an especially rainy August made it harder to restore grass on the fields.

He said the music festival and the yearly park restoration are one of the reasons Grant Park is “so beautiful now more than ever.”

Trump tries to repurpose Clinton’s attacks against her

Those are the jibes Donald Trump has recently unleashed on Hillary Clinton. If they sound familiar, it could be because she’s lodged those very attacks on him throughout the campaign.

As he works to gain ground against Clinton in the final stretch of the presidential race, Trump is increasingly repurposing Clinton’s attacks against her. It’s a popular schoolyard tactic for the GOP nominee, a political game of “I know you are, but what am I?” In the last few days, Trump and his campaign have repeatedly criticized Clinton for failing to provide specific policy proposals. That’s despite the fact that, by any measure, Trump has offered less detail on far fewer issues over the course of his campaign than Clinton, who has released so many policy proposals, her campaign published a book of them.

“Clinton is running a policy-free campaign. She offers no ideas, no solutions. And only hatred and derision,” he said at a rally Tuesday in Clive, Iowa.

It’s ironic coming from a candidate defined by divisive statements, who once mocked Clinton’s large policy shop, deriding her proposals as “a waste of paper” and insisting the public didn’t care about the sort of specifics she offered.

But it illustrates the way that the newly redesigned Trump campaign has embraced the technique of projection, slapping attacks back on his opponent, whether they fit or not.

It’s a tactic aimed at neutralizing attacks, said Tucker Martin, a longtime Republican operative.

“Essentially you’re delegitimizing their attack by simply muddying the water,

“It’s almost like a political shortcut,” he said, “a strategy of, ‘Nope you’re guilty too, let’s move to the next question.’ ” Early in her campaign, Clinton and her allies highlighted Trump’s most controversial comments to paint him as too crass for the job.

Her campaign’s first attack ad featured children watching and reacting to a compilation of Trump clips.

“Next time you see Trump rant on television, think about all the children listening across America. Kids hear a lot more than we think,” Clinton recently said.

It’s a line Trump lifted this week, after Clinton said at a fundraiser that half of Trump’s supporters fit into a “basket of deplorables,” including racists and xenophobes.

“What should these parents tell their children about Hillary Clinton’s attacks?”

Trump asked his audience in North Carolina. “To every kid in America tonight, I want you to know that your parents are working so hard to make

your life better, and to make your country better.”

The same pattern has repeated over and over. After Clinton called Trump “temperamentally unfit” for the White House, Trump responded by defending his temperament and assailing hers. He’s accused her of being involved with Russia – despite his frequent praise of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his own campaign’s ties to the strongman. And he’s accused Clinton of starting the “birther” movement questioning President Barack Obama’s citizenship, when he was its most vocal proponent.

The most jarring example has come in Trump’s denunciation of Clinton, deeply popular among blacks, as a racist.

A day after her campaign announced that she’d be giving a speech linking Trump to the so-called “alt-right movement” – a modern evolution of white supremacy – Trump escalated his attacks, labeling Clinton as “a bigot who sees people of color only as votes, not as human beings worthy of a better future.”

“She’s going to do nothing for African-Americans. She’s going to do nothing for the Hispanics,” said Trump, who himself is viewed as racist by a large portion of the electorate.

Farmers adjust to downturn

The Associated Press MAXWELL, Iowa – Pale green and 8 feet tall, tightly packed cornstalks reach to the horizon throughout the Midwest in what is likely to be the biggest harvest the U.S. has ever seen.

Aside from a sense of pride in breaking the previous record by nearly a billion bushels, farmers won’t benefit.

They’ll lose money on virtually every cob.

It’ll be the third consecutive year in which most corn farmers will spend more than they’ll earn. The growing has been too good and the resulting glut of corn depressed prices to a decade-low.

It’s a similar story for soybeans, the second most common Midwest crop.

As a result, farmers are cutting costs, dipping into savings or going further into debt. Federal crop insurance and payments that help protect farmers when prices fall too low offer some protection, yet many farmers and their spouses supplement income with offthe-farm jobs. The drop in farm profits raises questions about agriculture’s boom-and-bust cycles and why people adhere to what at times is seemingly not a sustainable business model.

“I am 67 years old and when we examined my Social Security records recently, I had a 12-year stretch when I didn’t pay myself one single dime,” said Wayne Humphreys, who grows corn and soybeans and raises hogs in southwest Iowa. “We lived on my wife’s salary. Everything else went to the farm.”

Corn and soybean prices reached their height in 2012 but have since plunged, resulting in a 42 percent drop in farm income. For the nation’s roughly 2 million family farms, the average household income will be $118,890, but only about a fifth will come from the farm itself, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said recently.

“Typically this time of year the dealership would be talking to me about getting a new planter, and they have talked to us and we told them we’re going to pass,” said Joe Steinkamp, who farms corn, soybean and occasionally wheat near Evansville, Indiana. “Obviously we’re concerned and we’re watching our pennies as we go.”

To get by, nearly a third of U.S. farms have to borrow money, and borrowing has increased because farmers need to finance operating costs and near-historic low interest rates make borrowing inexpensive. But banks are reporting an increase of past-due loans, an indication that borrowers are struggling to

The current situation isn’t like the 1980s, when foreclosures contributed to the loss of 292,000 farms over a 10year period. Some of that was caused by farmers who borrowed heavily during the 1970s’ low-interest rates then defaulted because of the combination of higher interest rates and collapsed crop prices.

The less-established farmers who rent expensive farmland or went into debt to purchase land or new equipment are “the ones I worry about,” said Harold Wolle, a fifth-generation family farmer from south-central Minnesota.

“It’s getting to a tougher stage even for farms that are more established.

Everybody’s feeling it now, especially guys like my dad. He’s 65 years old and has done really well and built things up, but we hope this doesn’t last forever because you hate to see a lot of those gains they’ve made over the years virtually get eroded,” Kimberley said.

To protect themselves, many farmers have diversified their operations – and sometimes, their crops – so when corn and soybeans aren’t profitable,

other aspects of the farm may be.

“To be a good farmer, you have to be a good agronomist, you have to be a good marketer and you have to be basically good at farm business management,” said Chad Hart, an agriculture economist at Iowa State University.

“You can’t just specialize and be a good producer and not be good at the others.”

Nebraska farmer Ben Steffen knows this: He milks 140 dairy cows in addition to growing corn, soybeans and wheat.

The increased demand for cheese and improved milk prices has improved his bottom line.

And Kirby Hettver has sold a Monsanto-brand seed and precision planter parts for a few years in addition to helping his dad and brother grow corn, soybean and alfalfa in west-central Minnesota.

“It has added a revenue stream for us, but more importantly, I’ve become a much better agronomist for our own farm with the knowledge I’ve learned from both of those businesses,” he said.

Farmers go out of business every year for a variety of reasons, but “we’re going to see more of that than we do in typical year,” Hart said. Some have walked away from rented land or sold off some land in a last-ditch effort to generate cash, Kimberley said.

Crop insurance and farm support programs designed to step in when commodity prices fall too low or revenue plummets will help. Direct government payments to farmers are expected to increase nearly 25 percent to $13.5 billion this year, the USDA estimated, although that also includes money for disaster relief.

Debt and losses are an acceptable part of the cycle for farmers who crave the intangibles: the unpredictability of farming and the renewed hope that comes with every spring planting. All it takes is a drought, flood or other natural disaster in another part of the world to disrupt a crop and prices could jump, creating profit potential.

“If you don’t mind a little heartburn and lost sleep and a little hard work, it’s fun,” Steffen said.

But down cycles can shake even the hardiest of farmers, said Kimberley, who’s also employed by the Iowa Soybean Association and leads the Iowa Biodiesel Board.

“It does make you think twice. Do I really want to deal with this kind of life where four out of 10 years I’m most likely going to lose money?” he said. “It’s a great life. It’s been a good business on and off, but, man, I wish there was a little bit more consistency to it.”

Two teams hungry for a victory What have you done for me lately?

That always is a criterion when we attempt to evaluate sports teams – in this instance, high school football teams.

Joliet Central and Plainfield Central both entered 2016 on multi-season losing streaks. With Joliet Central and Joliet West joining the Southwest Prairie Conference, and the league going to a nine-game round robin, the two hungry teams were destined to square off sometime along the way.

That time has arrived. It’s Week 4, and Plainfield Central will visit Joliet Central for the Steelmen’s homecoming game at 1 p.m. Saturday.

After the first two weeks, Joliet Central looked like it may have the upper hand. The Steelmen lost to Oswego East, 6-0, in their opener, with the Bengals’ touchdown coming on an interception return. Plainfield Central, meanwhile,

7. Lockport (3-0): The Porters proved they are for real with last week’s 16-14 win at Lincoln-Way Central. This week, however, is an entirely different challenge as they host Homewood-Flossmoor.

That night, Joliet Central visited Oswego East. Granted, the Wolves have a couple of high-caliber skill players and a good team in general, but 58-0 at halftime and a 71-0 final were not expected.

So if you look at Week 3 only, you have to say Plainfield Central is a prohibitive favorite. What have you done for me lately?

However, it may just be that the Steelmen did not match up well with Oswego East. Once the game got out of hand, it snowballed. If the Steelmen who were right with Plainfield East for a full game and were within a touchdown of Minooka at halftime show up Saturday, it could be game on.

Herscher entered the Associated Press Class 3A poll at No. 10 last week, and it will be interesting to see how far the Tigers move up this week after an impressive 25-8 victory over Interstate Eight foe Plano last Friday.

The undefeated Tigers have now outscored their opponents 136-14 to start the season. Quarterback Tyler Jones has been outstanding thus far. The senior has completed nearly 66.7 percent of his passes for 432 yards and six touchdowns while also rushing for 208 yards.

Herscher has a great chance to improve its record to 4-0 with a matchup at Streator (1-2, 0-1 Interstate Eight Large) on Friday.

LABUHN EXCELS AT LINCOLN-WAY WEST

Two years ago as a sophomore, Justin LaBuhn had some big games and was a consistent contributor on the varsity for Joliet West. Last season, he played at Lincoln-Way Central. This season, he joined his third team. He is living in an area that previously fed Lincoln-Way Central but now sends its students to Lincoln-Way West.

The new surroundings again seem to be agreeing with LaBuhn. He rushed for 91 yards on 14 carries, including a 37yard touchdown run, in last Friday’s 3514 win over Andrew. In three games, he has 469 yards (156.3 per game) and scored seven touchdowns for the 3-0 Warriors, who were the Class 5A runnerup last season and now will be in 7A because of four Lincoln-Way schools becoming three.

RANKS OF THE UNDEFEATED AND WINLESS HAVE INTERESTING MEMBERS

Through three weeks of play, 114 playoff eligible teams remain undefeated.

You will find the usual suspects throughout that list such as East St. Louis, Glenbard West and Homewood-Flossmoor, Sacred Heart Griffin and Tuscola.

But if you dig a little deeper you find some surprising teams as well. Decatur Lutheran has never been 3-0 in the history of the school’s program. St. Ignatius hasn’t been 3-0 since the 1950s. Granted, the program was dormant for many years, but still the feat is still a watershed moment for the squad.

The ranks of the undefeated will certainly dwindle a bit this week with notable games such as St. Charles East and St. Charles North and Virden-North Mac and Williamsville pairing off undefeated squads.

The list of 0-3 teams spans 110 teams.

Like the list of 3-0 squads, the 0-3 list also includes some unexpected names. Bishop McNamara hasn’t been 0-3 since 1979, while power programs such as Wheaton Warrenville South, Joliet Catholic and Simeon also find themselves in the same precarious predicament.

“We played with passion and pride in the second half,” Wildcats coach Jon Pereiro said after the tough loss to South. “If we keep the same pride and passion the next couple of weeks, we will see some improvement.”

That pride and passion, along with elusive, athletic quarterback Marcus Hayes, could make things difficult on Joliet Central. But again, the Steelmen we saw in the first game and a half this season would not be a pushover by any means.

After a full Friday night schedule around the area, that Saturday game will be interesting. Only one team will snap its losing streak, but don’t be surprised if both get into the win column before this season ends.

Elsewhere last weekend, games that jumped to the forefront were Lincoln-Way East’s 35-30 loss to Homewood-Flossmoor and Lockport’s 16-14 win over Lincoln-Way Central.

The East vs. H-F game, of course, generated interested statewide since the Griffins and Vikings are among the most highly rated teams in the state. The game lived up to the hype.

JOHNSBURG’S PEETE PASSES 4,000-YARD MARK

Johnsburg running back Alex Peete passed a milestone early in the Skyhawks’ 53-0 romp at Richmond-Burton on Friday when he eclipsed 4,000 career yards.

Peete took a handoff on fourth-and-1 and raced 61 yards for a touchdown to pass 4,000. He finished with 16 carries for 171 yards for the game and has 547 for the season with nine touchdowns.

“It was pretty awesome. This was one of my goals for my high school career,” said Peete, a third-year varsity starter.

“I give all the credit to the line, as usual; without them, I wouldn’t have the success I have. I hope there’s more to come.”

MARENGO STREAKING ALONG

Marengo had its first undefeated regular season last year since 1997 and has started at 3-0, giving it the longest current regular-season winning streak in the McHenry County area at 12 games, one ahead of Prairie Ridge.

It is interesting that Lockport is next up on H-F’s schedule. As impressive as the Porters’ win at Lincoln-Way Central and 3-0 start are under coach Dan Starkey, Lockport will enter Friday night’s game as a significant underdog. Some observers have termed this H-F team to be potentially among the best they have seen – ever – in Illinois.

Joliet Catholic may be 0-3, but the Hilltoppers’ offense came to life last week in a 49-35 loss to St. Patrick.

Notre Dame will visit Memorial Stadium on Friday night for JCA’s first of three home games this season.

The Hilltoppers will be looking to control the ball, finish off drives and be improved defensively over last week with whichever defensive bodies are available. Coach Dan Sharp noted after the St. Pat’s game that they have had eight defensive starters leave with injury during the first third of the season.

Wiht 20 senior starters graduating from last year’s team and a difficult, road-heavy schedule, JCA knew it had its work cut out. The injury bug is not helping matters, yet there were positives to come from the St. Pat’s game.

Notre Dame is good, but the Hilltoppers are accustomed to facing quality opponents. It should be a good one.

Rizzo’s 2 HRs help Cubs beat Cardinals, clinch playoff spot

The Associated Press ST. LOUIS – Jon Lester gave the Cubs a much-needed boost.

Anthony Rizzo hit a pair of home runs and Lester pitched eight dominant innings as the Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-0, on Wednesday to clinch at Jon Lester least a wild-card playoff berth.

The Cubs improved their MLB-best record to 93-52 and their magic number is one to clinch their first National League Central title Anthony since 2008. The Cubs se- Rizzo cured a playoff berth be-

cause St. Louis and San Francisco are the only teams that could catch them in the standings, but since those teams open a four-game series on Thursday both teams wouldn’t be able to do so.

“I’ll tell you, if you were in that dugout at the beginning of the game, the guys were dead on their feet,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “To play the kind of game we did today – really hot, last game of a long road trip – I give them a ton of credit. [Lester] really played into all that.”

The Cardinals began the day a halfgame behind the New York Mets and a full game behind the Giants for one of the two wild-card spots.

Lester (17-4) allowed four base runners, none of which got past first. Cubs catcher David Ross threw out two Cardinals trying to steal second and Lester faced just two batters over the

Also on Thursday, there are two practice sessions for NASCAR’s Camping World Truck Series, and those will take place at 3 and 5:30 p.m.

Qualifying for that series is scheduled at 3:45 p.m. Friday, with the running of the American Ethanol e15 225 race set for 7:30 p.m.

After this race, the truck series advances to its Round of 8 in its Chase, which gets underway next weekend at New Hampshire. William Byron leads the series with five wins, eight top-five finishes and 402 points. Daniel Hemric (374), Johnny Sauter (356), Matt Crafton (352), Timothy Peters (350) and Ben Kennedy (334) are next in the Truck Series standings.

Also on Friday, NASCAR’s XFINITY Series has practices at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Then on Saturday, XFINITY qualifying is at 10:45 a.m., with the running of the Drive for Safety 300 set for 2 p.m. After this race, the final 12 competitors will be determined for the series Chase, which gets underway next weekend at Kentucky.

Elliott Sadler has two wins and nine top-five efforts to give him the lead in the series with 852 points. Daniel Suarez (794), Justin Allgaier (786), Ty Dillon (777), Brendan Gaughan (755) and Erik Jones (753) are currently the top-six drivers in points in the XFINITY Series.

Parking lots and the box office open at 11 a.m. on Thursday and 10:30 a.m. on Friday with the gates, champions park, and infield fan zone opening one hour later on both days.

Lester improved to 7-0 with a 1.02 ERA in his last nine starts. He also helped his cause at the plate with an RBI single in the third.

“I’m just trying to give a good at-bat,” Lester said. “He elevated a changeup for me and I got it far enough out there to give us a run.”

Rizzo’s two-run homer in the ninth gave him 31 homers and 101 RBIs on the season. He is the second Cubs left-handed hitter in franchise history to post multiple 30 home run and 100 RBI seasons (Billy Williams did it in 1965, 1970 and 1972).

“Billy Williams, his numbers speak for himself and he’s done it so many years, so it’s a really good feeling,” Rizzo said.

Ross’ two-run homer in the fifth snapped a 0-for-8 streak and it was his

first home run since Aug. 17.

St. Louis starter Carlos Martinez (148) gave up four runs and eight hits in six innings.

Ross’ home run was just third by a right-handed batter against Martinez, who had his four winning decisions streak snapped.

The loss dropped the Cardinals’ home record to 33-41, assuring St. Louis of its first losing record at home since 1999 when it played in Busch Stadium II. While clinching at least a wild card spot is nice, the Cubs look forward to wrapping up the division at home this weekend, preferably tomorrow.

“Let’s do it,” Maddon said. “The sooner, the better. Then we can make our appropriate plans going forward and really set things up to make our best push.”

Tomlin, Crisp lead Indians over Sox

CHICAGO – Josh Tomlin pitched five effective innings in his return to the Indians rotation, Coco Crisp hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning to break the game open and Cleveland defeated the White Sox, 6-1, on Wednesday night to remain six games ahead of Detroit in the AL Central.

Tomlin (12-8) allowed one run on four hits and walked none as he ended a personal five-game losing streak that led to the right-hander being demoted to the bullpen after his last start on Aug. 30.

Jose Ramirez had two hits, including a triple that drove in two runs in a three-run third inning, and scored two runs. Brandon Guyer and Rajai Davis had two hits each.

Crisp, who also doubled, went deep

to left with none out in the sixth to chase Carlos Rodon (7-9) who allowed six runs to match his season high and lost for the first time since July 31. The lefty was 5-0 with a 1.85 ERA in his previous seven starts.

Adam Eaton drove in the lone Sox run with a triple in the third.

Tomlin won for the first time since July 30, when he was 11-3 with a 3.43 ERA. In six starts in August, the righty had a 11.48 ERA. Four Indians relievers combined to limit the Sox to two hits and walked none over four scoreless innings.

The Indians leveraged the strong pitching in this one to bounce back from a pair of lopsided losses in the first two games in the series when the Sox outscored them, 19-5.

The Sox took a 1-0 lead in the third when Eaton’s triple to the right-center gap scored Tyler Saladino from first.

The team’s top draft pick was on the field for 60 of the 75 snaps on defense, a sign of confidence from coach John Fox and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio that Floyd can handle the NFL even after a “choppy” preseason.

“He’s a gifted athlete, both in coverage and rush,” Fox said Tuesday. “I think you kinda saw on the sack that he’s got the ability. Luckily, we had good coverage that made the quarterback hold the ball. He’s got good speed off the edge. He’s got good speed in coverage. He’s got no problem bending. So whenever there’s a scrum like that in a quarterback sneak, my experience has not been good as far as the spot specifically. If they ruled it a first down, if there’s not irrefutable evidence, it doesn’t change.”

‘It’s still a place to come together and celebrate’ Joliet’s All Saints Greek Orthodox Church honors past, looks to the future

JOLIET – Even in its centennial year, All Saints Greek Orthodox Church of Joliet is growing and changing.

The church is home to third- and fourth-generation descendants of its original Greek founders, as well as converts: people who married into the church or those who converted to Orthodoxy, said Maria Meintanis, chairwoman for the anniversary year and lifelong member.

“It’s still a place to come together and celebrate,” Meintanis said.

Services are offered completely in English the fourth Sunday of every month and in Greek and English otherwise, said the Rev. Stephen Bithos, pastor. Byzantine-style iconography is gradually replacing the Western-style icons, he added.

Last year, lifelong parishioner Nick Macris spearheaded the purchase of a bronze and granite monument to honor parishioners who served in the armed forces. Bithos said All Saints is planning renovations and opening up ministry opportunities to its members.

He has a clear vision for the future.

“The vision for the church is to bring more people to Christ,” Bithos said.

A year of celebration

All Saints has hosted a number of activities this past year. In addition to an invitation-only banquet that will be held Sunday, Meintanis said the church will hold a shish kebab lunch Sept. 25 for anyone who ever was an altar server or choir member at All Saints.

The church also held a Greek version of Mardis Gras before the start of Lent, known as the Great Fast in the Orthodox church. Birthday celebrations honored members born in a particular month.

One Sunday school teacher had a reunion for her former students. An event, still in progress, is “100 Acts of Kindness.” It has engaged the 40 children in the Sunday school program and involved the entire parish.

“The acts have been as small as writing thank-you notes to the parish council members for the service to collecting items for MorningStar Mission, Guardian Angel and children’s hospitals,” Meintanis said. “We have other

Members at All Saints Greek Orthodox Church in Joliet tell a story that’s become legendary. In fact, as recently as a month ago, a contractor placing a work bid at the church knew the story, the Rev. Stephan Bithos said. Bithos himself heard the story when he came to the church 25 years ago.

It was 1943 and parishioners wanted to build the church from steel. But they couldn’t get steel because of the war effort, Bithos said. So several parishioners and the parish priest traveled to Washington, D.C., to speak to Franklin D. Roosevelt. “[Roosevelt] said, ‘I can’t get you steel.

We need it to save our troops,’ ” Bithos said.

“And then the priest, in his broken English, said, ‘What if we save some souls?’ ” Bithos said Roosevelt decided to divert a shipment of steel – bound for Chicago by military transport – to Joliet for the construction of All Saints.

“The steel that was diverted was supposed to go to Wrigley Field for lights,” Bithos said. “So if you’re a Sox fan, you love us, but if you’re a Cubs fan you might not be too happy with us.”

Rich history

All Saints received its charter from the ecumenical patriarchate in 1916 and its state charter in 1917, Bithos said. Macris said Greeks owned many of the businesses along Bluff Street at that time, which is why they decided to build a little bungalow church at 102 N. Broadway St. That original building was demolished in 1942. Later that year, the church broke ground in the same location for the current church. The actual cornerstone was laid in 1943, and the church was finished and consecrated in 1945.

“In 1949, the mortgage was paid off,” Macris said. “The remaining balance was to the tune of $11,162.50.”

In 1963, All Saints built an addition to house the office, the Sunday school classrooms, the library and the social

hall, Macris said. The original social hall was smaller and in the basement under the original church, he added.

Macris said his father was 12 when he came to the United States. After earning his engineering degree at the University of Arizona, he moved to Joliet.

“He walked into the church at age 26, took one look at my mother who was 16 and said, ‘That’s the girl I’m going to marry,’ ” Macris said.

Macris’ earliest memories include serving as an altar boy and acting in a church play. Nevertheless, Macris lays no claim to his heritage and is pleased to see non-Greeks embracing the church.

“We have a great number of people who have converted to Orthodoxy,” Macris said. “They are some of the best Orthodox Christians in our parish.”

‘Whispering Waves’ is a collection of spiritually themed poems

BOLINGBROOK – Patrick Achebe of Bolingbrook encourages people to seek God through his words.

Achebe is an architect, inspirational speaker and poet. His book, “Whispering Waves,” contains Achebe’s original poems for what he calls “everyday grace.” Each poem has a spiritual basis, he said, along with “positive inspiration” to lift up the reader.

“Everyone has their own individual situations, but we still can find inspiration from the lives we live. It all depends on how we look at the situation,” Achebe said. “I speak about finding the positive in every situation,

even death.”

Born in Nigeria, Achebe came to the United States in 1982 to attend Tuskegee University in Alabama. He believes God is ultimately in control, which is why people should be receptive to anyone they meet on their life’s journey.

In “Whispering Waves,” Achebe addresses a variety of circumstances people experience – goals, love, separation, hope – in a way that helps people reflect on the God that loves them.

“No matter what your situation is, you can find something that fits you and lifts you up to a higher place,” Achebe said.

FAITH BRIEFS Elwood Community Church food pantry celebrates 10 years

ELWOOD – Elwood Community Church is celebrating the 10th anniversary of serving Jackson Township residents in need through the food pantry.

Dear Dr. K: In a column about abdomi-

nal fat, you talked about two kinds of fat – brown fat and white fat. I’d like to hear more about them.

Dear Reader: I’m glad you asked, because the discovery of these two types of fat could prove to be very important. In the column you refer to, I discussed how visceral, or abdominal, fat (which accumulates deep inside the abdomen) is more harmful to our health than subcutaneous fat (the fat just beneath the skin). But when it comes to fat, it’s not just location that matters. Color counts, too – and brown is better.

Humans and other mammals have two types of fat: white fat and brown fat.

(There also may be a third kind that’s in between, sometimes called “beige fat.”)

Until very recently, we thought adult humans had only white fat. We knew some adult animals had brown fat, and human babies did, too. But we thought babies lost their brown fat as they grew older.

Discoveries at Harvard Medical School found all of us maintain some brown fat cells throughout our life. Why is this important? White fat cells store fat. When we get “fat” – when those love handles start to appear – that’s because we’re growing more and bigger white fat cells.

Brown fat cells, on the other hand, don’t store fat; they burn it. They are brown because they contain lots of mitochondria, the energy factories inside each cell. The mitochondria in brown fat cells burn fat to create one kind of energy: heat.

Animals with relatively more brown fat are less likely to develop insulin re-

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff sistance, a precursor to diabetes. They’re also less fat, because they burn more fat and store less of it. In other words, it appears brown fat wards off obesity.

These findings would be interesting – but not particularly relevant – if we couldn’t control the amount of white and brown fat in our bodies. But ongoing research suggests we can.

My colleagues at Harvard recently have discovered natural chemicals in all of us that affect the number of white and brown fat cells. One is a molecule called irisin. This hormone is produced by muscle cells, particularly when those cells are regularly exercised. It circulates through the blood and transforms white fat cells into brown fat cells.

When obese mice with insulin resistance are given injections of irisin, they lose weight and have reduced insulin resistance. This discovery has excited scientists, for obvious reasons. If it worked the same way in humans, and without side effects, it could have huge health benefits.

A word of caution: Many “silver bullets” for obesity have come and gone.

Still, I’d bet on this newly discovered molecule, and on other advances triggered by the discovery that we adult humans have brown fat within us.

Dear Abby: I DEAR ABBY am a bisexual female college Jeanne graduate living Phillips at home, and an only child. I have had one sexual encounter with a woman but never a relationship. I have, however, had relationships with men.

I came out to my mother when I was a teenager. She didn’t believe me, but did say she would not mention it to my other parents or family members. (I have two stepparents as both biological parents remarried.)

We have a wonderful convention for showing a single card in a suit -- a splinter bid. It worked wonders on this deal. But, first, how should South play in six spades after West leads the club queen?

When South showed four spades (and denied four hearts) in answer to Stayman, North jumped to four diamonds, a splinter bid, indicating at least four-card spade support and game-going values with a singleton (or void) in diamonds. This slight overbid was music to South’s ears, who no longer feared three fast diamond losers. He control-bid four hearts, then jumped to six spades when partner settled for four spades.

South seems to have one loser in each minor and only 11 winners: five spades, four hearts and two clubs.

Where might he find an extra trick?

Winners most often come from a ruff in the shorter trump hand or establishment of a long suit. Here, each is impossible. Unusually, declarer must play for ruffs in the longer trump hand.

He wins with his club ace and plays a trump to dummy. (With this layout, he must not cash the spade ace or jack.) Then South loses a diamond. Let’s say West wins and leads another trump. Declarer wins on the board, plays a club to his king, ruffs a diamond, leads a heart to the ace, ruffs his last diamond, draws trumps (overtaking dummy’s king with his ace), and claims. He has taken four spades, four hearts, two clubs and those two diamond ruffs.
