JOLIET – The Joliet Junior College board on Tuesday unanimously approved Judy Mitchell as the college’s ninth president without ever taking applications for the job.

Mitchell, who has been at JJC for 20 years, has been interim president since Debra Daniels’ sudden resignation in March.

Board trustees and faculty leaders commended Mitchell for bringing the college a new spirit of openness in less than six months of leadership, making comments that at times suggested what led to Daniels’ departure.

“Frankly it seems like the staff and the people who worked here were not thrilled with the way it was going,” Trustee Patty Deiters said of the campus mood when she joined the board a year ago. “With Dr.

Mitchell also is a JJC graduate, having earned an associate degree in 1998.

Mitchell started at JJC as an administrative assistant in 1996 and worked her way up to vice president of administrative services in 2012. She held that position before being named interim president.

She received her doctorate degree in community college leadership from National-Louis University in 2012. She has a master’s degree in business administration and a bachelor’s degree in business and technology from Governors State University.

Joliet D-86 superintendent holds first community chat session

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The new Joliet Public Schools District 86 superintendent held the first of several chat sessions Tuesday to answer questions and hear comments from the community.

It’s part of Superintendent Theresa Rouse’s effort to increase community and parental involvement in the Joliet elementary and junior high schools. Her first superintendent chat was held at the Forest Park Community Center.

Rouse explained to several visitors the theme for the district this year: building capacity for H.O.P.E., or humor, optimism, perspective and expectation.

“We’re not perfect. We have a ways to go. But we’re going to not spin in the past.

We’re going to step to the future,” Rouse said.

Joining her were several parents, Forest Park Community Center Executive Director and Joliet Councilwoman Bettye Gavin, District 86 board member Gwendolyn Ulmer and Joliet Councilwoman Jan Quillman.

Some of the topics discussed were the importance of reading, increased parental involvement, anti-bullying efforts and curriculum.

Not everyone was happy with the college’s leader being chosen without the board taking résumés for the job, however.

“I feel as a board member I didn’t get a chance to interview her,” Trustee Alicia Morales said.

Morales and board Vice Chairman Andy Mihelich both said they would have preferred a search process but would not stand against the will of the board.

In brief remarks, Mitchell thanked those who supported her and said, “We need to work together. We need to support one another.”

Bob Marcink, president of the faculty union, called on the board before its vote to hire Mitchell, saying the college has gone through too many starts and stops because of presidents and other administrators leaving after a few years.

Rouse said exposure to as much rich vocabulary as possible is key, along with school-going skills such as using scissors, recognizing letters and play.

“The No. 1 piece is reading – as many words as we can get into their world possible,” Rouse said.

But one issue was knowing how to assess children’s reading growth, she said.

Rouse said the district’s goal is to get students at grade-level reading by third grade and the district will need time to achieve it.

“Sustainable change takes at least 3 to 5 years. All research supports that. So what I’m asking for is patience but also assistance. And that’s all of us working together – all of us really linking arms,” Rouse said.

Many at the chat session were happy Rouse was making an effort to visit the schools within District 86 and be in the community.

Stanley Moffett said his son was able to be successful in school because of Moffett’s involvement.

“The parents need to be more involved and by you putting your face out there, that might open up the heart of the parents because they need to be involved,” Moffett said.

Rouse told visitors about a program piloting this year at two elementary schools that gives parents resources to help their children with schoolwork at home. She said she hopes it will be districtwide in the future.

After some questions about bullying and social-emotional needs, Rouse said the district has an anonymous tip line for students to report bullying and the CHAMPS program.

JJC class introduces concepts in broad field

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Students at Joliet Junior College are getting an introduction to sustainable and environmental concepts in a new course this fall semester.

Called “Introduction to Sustainability,” the course covers sustainable food, water and shelter, renewable energy technologies, sustainable business practices and green career exploration.

The course is in line with the community college’s past sustainability initiatives, which have led to facility improvements, grant awards and students competing in national recycling

contests.

Maria Anna Rafac, a JJC professor, is teaching the course this semester.

She said the students – including nursing, biology and environmental science majors – have spent time looking at how sustainability relates to their future careers and their lives.

Sustainability not only covers environmental practices, but also economic and social equity.

“We believe if we could start the conversation now, then our students will be prepared for the major changes that are happening,” she said.

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Construction of a Joliet hotel and conference center that has been the subject of both fanfare and controversy started quietly this summer.

Hospitality Guru Group is developing a Holiday Inn Express with a conference center near the Houbolt Road interchange with Interstate 80.

The project has been applauded for bringing conference and banquet space to town that would attract small conventions and other events to boost visitor traffic to Joliet.

The group plans to build a Candlewood Suites hotel in the future depending on how the Holiday Inn Express performs, said Dave Mackley, director of inspections for the city of Joliet.

Aurora-based Hospitality Guru Group would not discuss the project other than to say that it is expected to open in summer 2017.

City officials, however, said the project is going forward as previously planned, except that the developer decided to forgo city incentives.

“That also negates the obligation to use prevailing wage workforce on the project,” City Manager Jim Hock said.

The City Council never approved the higher incentives, and Hospitality Guru eventually went ahead without them.

Guru remain on good terms and that the city is working with the developer on building permits and other matters needed to complete construction.

The project has been in the works since at least May 2013, when Hospitality Guru publicly presented plans for a hotel and conference center essentially the same as what is in the works today.

The plan is for two hotels: the 120room Holiday Inn Express and the 80room Candlewood Suites. The conference center would be in the middle of the two hotels, but Guru at one point decided to hold off construction of the second hotel until the market for the Holiday Inn Express was established.

The project also includes a restaurant, which led to a controversy over the potential impact on neighboring Heroes West. The owner of Heroes West objected to a portion of the proposed incentive package that offered a break on food and beverage taxes for a restaurant that would be a direct competitor in the same business area. The city eventually restructured the proposed incentives to accommodate the concern.

The total cost of the project has been estimated at between $20 million and $25 million.

New Will County Courthouse employee lot opened

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A new employee parking lot of the Will County Courthouse was opened Tuesday.

The demolition earlier this year of the Eagle Building at the southeast corner of Washington and Ottawa streets allowed for an area that adds 21 spaces to the staff lot. The new parking spaces, which Chief Judge Richard Schoenstedt said will be used by judges and senior staff, should ease demand on the other lots near the courthouse.

“Parking is always an issue downtown. This should help,” Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said.

O’Dekirk, Schoenstedt, Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr., Circuit Clerk Pam McGuire, Joliet Councilman John Gerl and Will County Board members Ragan Freitag and Herb Brooks held a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony on the new lot with the planned site of the new courthouse behind them.

“This new lot is another example of Will County commitment to our coun-

ty seat in downtown Joliet,” Walsh Sr. said. “We are moving forward with [the courthouse] and this is another step toward this goal.”

Demolishing the Eagle Building, removing the rubble and paving the new lot cost just under $300,000. The yellow stripes and numbers have been painted on the lot, but some landscaping is still needed on its west side.

Before being torn down in June, the Eagle Building housed offices of the Will County Sheriff’s Office, which have moved to the First Midwest Bank Building on the opposite corner.

After a new sheriff’s facility is built, with work starting later this year, on Laraway Road, a $195 million 10-story courthouse is planned for the bank property.

“I remember when every constitutional office in the county was in [the current] courthouse, but we’ve grown,” Walsh Sr. said as he pointed across the street.

Walsh Sr. said it is unlikely the county will tear down the courthouse for parking when the new one is built.

Police: Joliet man who killed mother confessed

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet man facing a murder trial this week admitted to slaying his mother and dumping her body in the Des Plaines River.

But Charles “C.J.” McCullum also told police he was supposed to be taking medication for his mental illness and believed his mother wanted him to kill his brother and he’d be able Charles “C.J.” to play professional bas- McCullum ketball if she was “sacrificed,” according to trial testimony Tuesday.

On March 20, 2013, McCullum, 24, allegedly choked Jeanie Parker in a bedroom at their home in the 100 block

of Fifth Avenue. McCullum then used two knives to fatally stab Parker and used a baseball bat to hammer one in.

Instead of a jury, Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes is deciding the case as a bench trial.

Joliet Detective Tizoc Landeros told defense attorney George Lenard it was not surprising McCullum offered “inconsistent” and contradictory information during a lengthy police interview.

“When we’re questioning somebody about a crime, it’d be more unusual if we got the whole story right up front,” Landeros said. “That’s why we keep going back over what happened. The inconsistencies look weird on paper but you have to see the full context.”

At various points during the recorded interview, McCullum claimed his mother regained consciousness when

he stabbed her and that she wasn’t conscious, that he’d watched rap videos after the slaying and his mother had gotten upset he was watching them, that he was married and was homosexual.

He told police God told him to use the knives and a voice said “Don’t do it” while he went into her bedroom.

McCullum said Parker had begun “giving signs” that he should kill his brother, but was unable to provide Landeros and Detective Chris Schott with any examples.

“I’m glad I seen that [killing her] through ... because it was crazy, like she had the devil [in her],” McCullum told the detectives.

McCullum also said positive comments on social media about his basketball skills showed he had the opportunity to play professionally for the Chicago Bulls. McCullum appeared

8 Midwest Brewers Fest approved

for Oct. 8 event in Plainfield

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Midwest Brewers Fest is returning in October to Plainfield.

A request by festival organizers was approved Monday by the Plainfield Village Board. It will be the sixth time the festival has been held in Plainfield.

The event will return to Plainfield Riverfront Park, which played host for its first four years. In 2014, the last time the festival was held along the DuPage River, a large rainstorm left cars and trucks stuck in the mud. Entry was delayed while festival-goers sought shelter from the storm, but ultimately the event was held.

Plainfield Mayor Michael Collins said Tuesday that organizers have proper insurance and have met all of the village’s requirements to host the festival.

Collins said proceeds from the event will once again go to charity.

The nonprofit, all-volunteer Midwest Brewers Fest is the largest single donor to the Plainfield Riverfront Foundation and one of the largest donors to the national organization Pints for Prostates.

In 2014, the fest added a third charity:

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana.

Midwest Brewers Fest has run three successful events since the 2014 event – one outdoor event in Willow Springs and two indoor events in Plainfield – according to its Facebook page, and has addressed guest concerns stemming from the 2014 event.

It has dedicated one of its volunteers to posting live event updates on Twitter and Facebook. Organizers also changed the physical structure of the fest and it will feature smaller tents that can be quickly moved if necessary.

Collins said having the event in October may mean better weather.

The 2014 event had more than 200 types of beer brewed by about 70 different breweries. According to the Midwest Brewers Fest website, www.midwestbrewersfest.org, tickets for the Oct. 8 festival will be on sale soon.

Some of the breweries that will be pouring beer at the event include Miskatonic Brewing Co., Pollyanna Brewing Co., Three Floyds Brewing, Metal Monkey Brewing, Arcade Brewery, Hopvine Brewing Company, Vice District Brewing, BrickStone Brewery, Cademon Brewing Co. and Twisted Hippo.

Police: Man asked children about fast-food restaurants in encounters

mmallory@shawmedia.com ELWOOD – A man has asked two children in Elwood where fast-food restaurants were located, in incidents police are investigating as suspicious, according to the Elwood Police Department. Elwood Police Chief Fred Hayes said Tuesday that a young man told his father Friday evening that about 8 a.m. that day on his walk to school, a man in a vehicle asked him where Wendy’s was located. The incident occurred near Park and Jackson streets, but there are no Wendy’s restaurants in Elwood.

Hayes said the boy’s sister then told their father a similar incident happened to her the previous week, when she was walking home from school at about 6 p.m. A man asked her where McDonald’s was located. That incident occurred near Woodbine and Bush drives, but there are no McDonald’s restaurants in Elwood, either.

Both children described the vehicle the man was driving as a gray van or SUV. Elwood Community Consolidated School District 203 was immediately notified by police and sent parents a text

New Lenox looks to officially give bid preference to local contractors

Shaw Media correspondent NEW LENOX – New Lenox trustees are considering an amendment to the village’s competitive bidding policy for village contracts in order to give preference to local contractors.

Village trustees Monday night were presented an amended ordinance that would allow the village to give local businesses that are not the lowest bidders on a village project but fall within 2 percent of the lowest bid the chance to rebid at the amount of the lowest bidder.

According to the proposed ordinance, “providing a preference for local bidders in purchases by and contracts with the village will support local businesses and thereby support local tax revenues to the village and local taxing bodies and increase employment opportunities for local residents.”

If the ordinance is approved, for projects exceeding $20,000 local bidders that fall within the 2 percent range not to exceed a difference of $20,000 of the lowest bid by a non-local business will be given

notice by the village of the opportunity to match the bid within three days in order to be awarded the contract. If more than one local bidder falls within that 2 percent difference range, the one with the lowest of those bids will be given the opportunity to match the lowest bid.

“We want to do everything we can to allow people who live and invest in this community, whether they are residents or business owners, to work in this community,” Mayor Tim Baldermann said in a later interview.

Baldermann said the amendment seeks to “memorialize” an unofficial village policy to encourage developers to hire and contract locally for not only village projects but also private development projects.

When the village was seeking contracts for its new police headquarters, language was added to the contract with Leopardo Companies Inc. to ensure that preference for subcontractors would be given to local businesses as long as the bids fell within an established range, Village Administrator Kurt Carroll said.

With this provision three contracts

were able to be awarded to local bidders for that project, Carroll said.

The ordinance will likely come to the board for approval at its next meeting.

The future of wastewater treatment

Village Board trustees Monday night approved a $158,000 contract with Strand Associates Inc. to evaluate the costs of maintaining and upgrading New Lenox’s three wastewater treatment plants or find other alternatives.

These include building one new large plant at a new site or possibly shutting down some of its plants and contracting with another village for treatment services. The village is already planning a $19.7 million expansion of Plant 2 to meet increasing demand and is waiting on a low-interest loan from the state in order to move forward.

However, with improvements for Plant 1 also imminent, and with projections of the village’s population of almost 27,000 tripling in the next few decades, officials must be “proactive” about realizing the most cost-effective options for the long run, Baldermann said.

JJC was awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation’s advanced technological education program for the project, said Laura Cotner, JJC professor and coordinator of the architecture studies, engineering and construction management technical program, in an email.

“The SET 100 class is a general education course for all students across campus and is being used as a basis for further development of additional curriculum in the broad field of sustainability,” Cotner said.

The ultimate goal of the project is to infuse the concept of sustainability in all areas of study, she said.

“With the inaugural offering of the SET 100, JJC is on the path to ‘greening’ their curriculum for the benefit of the students and the community in which

we serve,” Cotner said.

Rafac said the students are infusing what they learn in the class with their career aspirations or personal life through topics such as water conservation. Some students, she said, didn’t realize how much water they wasted when brushing their teeth or taking a shower.

She said sometimes people think major water issues happen elsewhere in the world when they are occurring locally, such as in Flint, Michigan, which has been affected by a lead contamination water crisis.

“All we’re doing is training people, making them aware and hopefully making these better choices,” Rafac said.

Students in the class come from diverse backgrounds and they’re all realizing how sustainability issues affect their lives, she said. She said sustainability is about more than just the planet, it’s also about people and profit.

“We want to find a sweet spot where we consider all three of those things,” she said.

Laser offers easier way to get rid of varicose veins SPONSORED BY

“In the old days they used to do vein stripping which was a more invasive treatment and the patient was then laid up for several days afterward,” said Kathe Malinowski, lead esthetician and marketing manager for Eterna MedSpa & Laser Vein Center.

Putting Rauner’s money into perspective The Washington Post published a story the other day, titled “Meet the wealthy donors who are pouring millions into the 2016 elections.”

The paper listed the top 10 national donors to so-called “super PACS.” The list is topped by wealthy San Francisco Democrat Tom Steyer at $38 million.

Second place went to “New York-based hedge-fund magnate” Robert Mercer, at $20.2 million.

Keep in mind that these are national-minded donors who are giving to super PACs that focus on the presidential race and U.S. Senate and congressional campaigns throughout the country.

Now take a look at the money contributed by Gov. Bruce Rauner.

His personal campaign committee has contributed more than $16 million to the Illinois Republican Party alone this year, accounting for 95 percent of all the money the party has raised. The party has, in turn, used that Rauner money to fund television and radio ads, direct mail, polling, staff, etc. for state House and Senate campaigns.

In June, Rauner gave an additional $2.5 million to Dan Proft’s Liberty Principles PAC, which is heavily involved in legislative contests.

And the governor contributed $2 million to the Turnaround Illinois PAC, which describes its mission thusly: “To support state legislative candidates

VIEWS Rich Miller who support Gov. Rauner’s bold and needed reforms, and to oppose those who stand in the way.”

That’s roughly $20.5 million, enough for second place in the aforementioned Washington Post list. The difference is, here in Illinois, it’s one guy focusing on only one state.

There are some definite apples and oranges when making this comparison.

Not every dime of Rauner’s campaign fund came from Rauner himself. But the total doesn’t include $2.2 million that Rauner gave to his own campaign fund this year, in order to avoid any possible double-counting as money is passed through.

What it does show you, though, is how one person is dominating the money race here far more than individual wealthy people are influencing the national races.

Yes, the Democrats have raised plenty of money as well this year. At the end of June, all Democrats (including the legislative leaders, the state party, rank and file legislators and Democratic challengers) actually had $3.4 million more cash on hand than all similar

Republicans, including Rauner.

But Scott Kennedy at Illinois Election Data took a look at legislative funding so far this cycle and, as of 9 p.m. Sept. 6, 16 of the top 20 total contributions to targeted candidates were Republicans.

So, if the Democrats had more cash on hand, then why aren’t they spending more of it? Well, the Democrats can raise only so much more money before November. Rauner and his wealthy friends can simply write big checks and completely erase any disadvantage as need be. It’s kind of like how people who are expecting a large inheritance don’t save much money for retirement.

They know lots more cash is in the pipeline, so they often feel free to spend as they wish today.

Kennedy also looked at all the money raised this cycle by the Illinois GOP, the House Republican Organization, the Republican State Senate Campaign Committee and the personal campaign funds of the two Republican legislative leaders and found that of the $21.8 million they’ve raked in so far, 73 percent comes from Rauner. Without that Rauner money, the Republicans would be at a huge cash disadvantage, like they always have in the past.

Rauner is giving Republican legislative candidates a fighting chance in a year that otherwise would be seen

as a complete lost cause. Despite her national problems, all polling shows Hillary Clinton with a double-digit lead in Illinois.

Without Rauner, Republican legislative leaders would be bracing for an even further retreat into their tiny minority, and praying that the offyear election of 2018 would give them enough of a boost to regain a seat or two here and there.

To make it clear, I’m not saying Gov. Rauner is doing is a bad thing.

House Speaker Michael Madigan has in the past absolutely drowned the House Republicans with his ability to outspend them. The tables are finally being turned on Madigan these days.

What goes around comes around, as they say.

But if you thought that Rauner exerted a lot of influence on Republican legislators during his first two spring legislative sessions, you probably ain’t seen nothing yet, especially if the GOP does better than would normally be expected. The Republican leaders are going to owe him big. Really big. And, whatever happens in November, they’ll want to keep that money pipeline flowing freely in 2018.

To the Editor: In order to minimize gerrymandering, it is mathematically possible to limit the circumference of the district relative to the area in order to limit weird, unusual or elongated shapes.

In addition, computer artificial intelligence could be used to fairly and neutrally create districts.

Knowing politicians’ computer expertise and coding skills, they won’t have a clue what is really going on but look at the result, the likely Democratic and Republican districts compared to the entire population of registered voters to see if they match proportionally.

Such as an even split of state registered Democratic and Republican voters generates an even split of Democratic and Republican legislative districts.

OBITUARIES KENNETH R. ERB Kenneth R. Erb, of Joliet, passed away peacefully at Victorian Village, Homer Glen, Monday, Sept. 12, 2016. Age 76 years.

Survived by his wife of 52 years, Karen Erb (nee Henke) of Joliet; son, Kerry (Monica) Erb of Joliet; daughter, Kendrea (Nathanael) Fackler of Lincoln, NE; six grandchildren Kara, Thomas, Raine and Chloe Erb and Ethan and Noah Fackler; two brothers, James (Celeste) Erb and Barry (Gail) Erb, both of Edwardsville; a sister, Lola (Richard) Dodge of Fosterburg; and a sister-in-law, Brenda Erb of Waterford, WI. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents, George and Lorna Erb; and brother, David Erb. Ken was born Aug. 29, 1940, in Edwardsville.

He graduated from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville with a degree in education and Northern Illinois University with a master’s degree in administration. Veteran of the U.S. Navy serving aboard the USS Haverfield. Ken retired from Gompers Junior High School after 31 years of teaching math and computers. Member of Our Savior Lutheran Church and Joliet Noon Lions Club.

The family would like to thank the numerous caregivers, Victorian Village and Joliet Area Community Hospice for their special care of Ken.

Lying in state at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1910 Black Road, Friday, Sept. 16, 2016, from 9 a.m. until services at 10 a.m. Rev. Loy Schlote officiating, Rev. William Mitschke assisting.

Interment Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.

Born July 23, 1939 in Joliet, David was raised and educated in Joliet, and graduated from Joliet Township High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force, and worked for Caterpillar in Joliet for 43 years until he retired. Kruzer enjoyed golfing and bowling, playing cards

and solving crossword and jigsaw puzzles. He was passionate about traveling to see the world and loved going on cruises.

Survivors include his three children, Kristopher (Carla) Krahl of Williamsville, New York, Erica (Eddie Leasure) Krahl of Coal City and Kelly Krahl of Braceville; five grandchildren, Keegan and Cameron Thacher of Coal City, Ambiance Krahl of Braceville and Dennis and Robert Krahl of Williamsville, New York; two brothers, Harry (Donna) Holm Jr. of Plainfield and Joseph Holm of DeKalb; brother-in-law, Al Cap of Bloomington; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A 20th Century Knight’s Quest for Peace, Civil Liberties and Economic Justice,” was written with a co-author when he was in his 90s. It contained book jacket testimonials from President Bill Clinton, Barbra Streisand, Jane Fonda and Norman Lear, who summed up his friend’s legacy by saying: “He’s addicted to fairness and justice.”

In 1971, hearing that Ellsberg was to be prosecuted, Sheinbaum saw a cause that meshed with his anti-Vietnam War sentiments. He volunteered to organize Ellsberg’s legal team and raise money for his defense. He and his wife, Betty, moved to Los Angeles for the trial and never left. He recruited Hollywood celebrities to hold fundraisers and he signed up two of the most prominent civil liberties lawyers in the country, Leonard Boudin and Leonard Weinglass.

After many months of legal drama, the case was dismissed for governmental misconduct involving a

break-in at Ellsberg’s psychiatrist’s office and the judge’s meetings with members of the Nixon administration.

In the 1980s, Sheinbaum became obsessed with the cause of peace in the Middle East. He managed to arrange a meeting with Palestinian Liberation Organization leader Yasser Arafat and the picture of him with his arm around Arafat that appeared on the front page of the Los Angeles Times set off a firestorm of protest within the Jewish community. He was booed when he spoke at synagogues. But he continued his mission, meeting with Arafat several more times and trying to negotiate peace with Israel.

When Arafat died, he said hope of a peace agreement died with him. His dream of peace had failed.

“My failure is the greatest disappointment I have ever experienced,” Sheinbaum said, “and I can only take solace from the knowledge that I really, really tried. I really did.”

LOS ANGELES – Stanley K. Sheinbaum, a former economics professor whose drive for Mideast peace had him mingling with presidents, royalty and movie stars, has died. He was 96.

Sheinbaum died of heart disease on Monday at his home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, said his assistant, Marti Maniates.

Sheinbaum gave up teaching to devote himself to what he called his quest to “create a little peace and justice in this unjust world.”

He raised funds to defend Daniel Ellsberg during the military analyst’s trial for releasing the Pentagon Papers, a secret study of the Vietnam War. Never one to shrink from controversy, Sheinbaum met with late Palestinian President Yasser Arafat in an unofficial diplomatic mission to bring peace to the Middle East. The meet-

ing propelled him into headlines and sparked protests from Israelis and the American Jewish community.

“For a while, I was the most hated Jew in America ... by other Jews anyway,” he said in his 2011 autobiography. But he added, “I didn’t waste time agonizing.”

Still, he acknowledged, his mission for peace failed.

Sheinbaum “was a tireless advocate whose courageous stances breathed life into monumental change on both the local and global stages,” Mayor Eric Garcetti said in a statement.

“His work will forever inspire everyone who believes in bringing people together to transform our world for the better,” he said.

Sheinbaum’s causes ranged from reforming the LAPD to urging California universities to divest from their holdings in South Africa during apartheid.

Rauner gives $100K to Ind. candidate

The Associated Press INDIANAPOLIS – The Illinois governor has tossed in $100,000 of his own money to boost the campaign of Indiana’s Republican gubernatorial candidate even as the two states compete to lure jobs.

The money Gov. Bruce Rauner gave to Indiana Lt. Gov. Eric Holcomb’s campaign last week is a small fraction of the $16 million that the wealthy former venture capitalist is investing to help GOP candidates cut into large Democratic majorities in the Illinois Legislature this fall.

Rauner has said he wants to emulate the business-friendly agenda of former Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels – for whom Holcomb was a top Statehouse aide and campaign manager.

But Rauner said last year he wanted to “rip the economic guts out of Indiana,” and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence has frequently touted the state’s work to lure businesses from Illinois. Pence, who is now Donald Trump’s vice presidential running mate, just last week released a statement calling a company’s decision to move operations from

Court won’t reconsider redistricting ruling

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Supreme Court has denied a request to reconsider its ruling that a group’s initiative to change how legislative districts are drawn is ineligible for the November ballot.

The court issued the ruling Tuesday on a 4-3 vote.

The Independent Maps coalition had collected about 563,000 signatures to ask voters whether legislative mapmaking power should be in the hands of an independent commission instead of lawmakers. The court ruled last month that the group’s proposal was unconstitutional.

It’s the second failed attempt to overhaul redistricting by petition in two years.

Independent Maps Chairman Dennis FitzSimons said in a statement that “Illinois voters have been denied their right

“He was instrumental in helping turn Indiana around and Bruce believes Eric will be a tremendous governor,” Schrimpf said.

Schrimpf didn’t immediately reply to a Eric message asking wheth- Holcomb er Rauner is making other out-of-state campaign contributions this year.

The Montana-based National Institute on Money in State Politics, which tracks political spending and advocates for transparency, listed a $100,000 contribution in the 2002 Pennsylvania governor’s race as Rauner’s only donation of at least the size he gave to Holcomb outside Illinois.

The Pence administration said more than 50 Illinois-based companies have moved operations to Indiana in the past decade. Gregg campaign spokesman Jeff Harris pointed to Indiana’s stagnant average wages and Holcomb’s support for the state’s

religious objections law, which prompted an uproar last year over whether it would sanction discrimination against gay people.

“He’s pledged to continue Mike Pence’s economic policies which have hurt so many Hoosier families and embarrassed our state in eyes of the world,” Harris said. “As our competition, Gov. Rauner would love to see Indiana continue down this path – it will only make his record look better.”

Holcomb started from nearly zero in his campaign account ahead of the GOP state committee’s nomination vote – while Gregg had about $5.8 million in campaign money at the end of June.

SPRINGFIELD – A group of clergy and union members rallied outside the state Capitol to protest what they say is Gov. Bruce Rauner’s efforts to cut social service costs.

Springfield home-care provider and Service Employees International Union member Gail Hamilton on Monday called Rauner and legislators who stand with him “immoral.”

The rally was part of effort in about 25 state capitals organizers called the “Higher Ground Moral Day of Action.”

Man given 6 months for red-light camera scheme

CHICAGO – A man who participated in a bribery scheme that steered $100 million in red-light camera contracts to an Arizona company has received a six-month prison sentence.

U.S. District Judge Virginia Kendall in sentencing Martin O’Malley on Monday said the case against the man at the center of the bribery couldn’t have been prosecuted without his testimony.

O’Malley told the judge his actions were “deplorable.”

The 75-year-old O’Malley faced up to five years in prison after admitting he passed $560,000 in cash bribes from Redflex Traffic Systems Inc. to Chicago City Hall insider John Bills.

Kendall last month sentenced the 55-year-old Bills, who was convicted in January, to 10 years in prison for bribery, conspiracy and extortion.

LAS VEGAS – A British man pleaded guilty Tuesday in U.S. federal court to trying to grab a police officer’s gun and open fire at a June campaign rally for presidential candidate Donald Trump in Las Vegas.

Standing before a judge in orange jail clothes with the word “detainee” across his back, Michael Steven Sandford acknowledged that he has been treated in the past for mental illness.

Court documents said Sandford previously told a federal agent that he drove from California to Las Vegas with a plan to kill Trump.

“I plead guilty, your honor,” Sandford told U.S. District Judge James Mahan when asked for his plea to being an illegal alien in possession of a firearm and disrupting an official function.

“I tried to take a gun from a policeman to shoot someone with, and I’m pleading guilty,” he said.

Americans got raise last year for first time since ’07

WASHINGTON – In a long-awaited sign that middle-class Americans are finally seeing real economic gains, U.S. households got a raise last year after seven years of stagnant incomes. Rising pay also lifted the poorest households, cutting poverty by the sharpest amount

in nearly a half-century.

Higher minimum wages in many states and tougher competition among businesses to fill jobs pushed up pay, while low inflation made those paychecks stretch further. The figures show that the growing economy is finally benefiting a greater share of American households.

The median U.S. household’s income rose 5.2 percent in 2015 to an inflation-adjusted level of $56,516, the Census Bureau said Tuesday. That is the largest one-year gain on data stretching back to 1967.

Samsung’s fix for Galaxy Note 7 is no full recharge

SEOUL, South Korea –Samsung plans to issue a software update for its recalled Galaxy Note 7 smartphones that will prevent them from overheating by limiting battery recharges to 60 percent.

The front page of the Seoul Shinmun, a South Korean newspaper, carried a Samsung advertisement on Tuesday announcing the software update for any users of the Note 7 who may be disregarding its recall notice and continuing to use the smartphone.

“It is a measure to put consumer safety first, but we apologize for causing inconvenience,” the advertisement by Samsung Electronics said.

Political risk for all in ‘deplorables’ debate The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – A war of words over Donald Trump’s “deplorables” is intensifying as Republicans and Democrats fight for political points over Hillary Clinton’s claim that many of the New York billionaire’s supporters are racist, sexist and homophobic.

Trump and his allies across the country insisted Tuesday that the Democratic presidential nominee’s comments reflect an out-of-touch elitist who looks down on working-class voters, akin to 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney’s assertion that 47 percent of Americans would never vote for him because they were dependent on the government. Democrats – and even some Republicans – however, warned that this debate could backfire on Trump, drawing new attention to white supremacists and hate groups attracted by his “America first” message.

Indeed, former KKK leader David Duke offered fresh praise for the way that Trump and running mate Mike Pence are handling the controversy. But not all Republicans were pleased.

“Let’s remember that, weird as it may seem, a lot of voters are only just now tuning in, so they may not be aware of the fact that David Duke, various KKK organizations, the alt-right en masse, Vladimir Putin and other foreign authoritarian enemies of America – people who really are deplorable – are supporting Trump,” said Liz Mair, a Washington-based Republican operative and a vocal Trump critic.

Speaking to donors in New York City on Friday, Clinton had said that half of Trump’s supporters were in “a basket of deplorables,” a crowd she described as racist, sexist, homophobic or xenophobic.

I’m just a hardworking, tax-paying American and proud of it!” Another wore a homemade shirt that read “I’m with deplorable.”

“It sums up what she thinks of American voters: that we’re dumb and stupid and can’t make decisions for ourselves,” said Charles House, 78, of Ankeny, Iowa.

“She looks down on us.”

The night before at a rally in North Carolina, one Trump’s supporter’s violent outburst complicated his message.

As security escorted out several protesters, a man grabbed one protester around the neck, punched another in the face and slapped at anoth-

er woman. The incident was captured by assembled TV networks.

Back on the “deplorables’ front, Indiana Gov. Pence, Trump’s vice presidential running mate, refused anew on Tuesday to say whether white supremacist Duke was “deplorable.” Pence has disavowed Duke, but said he was “not in the name-calling business.”

Duke, a former KKK leader, was pleased with that.

“The whole idea that they were trying to make Pence call me names, basically, and he didn’t bite on that was a real positive thing for all of us,” Duke said.

Democrats have welcomed a debate that shines new light on some of the elements cheering Trump’s candidacy.

In November, Clinton will need a strong turnout among President Barack Obama’s coalition of minorities, women and millennials. Her campaign argues that Trump will struggle to connect with such voters if he’s viewed as fostering white supremacists, a group commonly referred to as the “alt-right.”

“Bigotry is deplorable and I think she should stand by her guns,” said Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., a Clinton ally.

At the beginning of Tuesday’s Hits for HUGS match against Joliet Central, Minooka’s volleyball team couldn’t get anything going.

The Southwest Prairie foes exchanged points, and just when the Indians needed them to, the Steelwomen

overpassed the ball.

Middle blocker Olivia Klank was waiting.

Klank bounced the ball and started screaming. Two plays later, she got her second kill in as many attempts.

When the Indians could not keep the ball in play, the junior middle earned kills that helped switch the momentum, and that burst of energy ended with Minooka earning a 25-14, 25-17 victory over Joliet Central.

“I’m the type of player that after I do something well, I get excited and that pumps up my teammates and they follow. We all start pumping each other up when we need to,” Klank said. “I’m happy with how we’ve been playing and I’m excited to see where the season takes us. I think that we have a lot ahead of us. We’re a big threat in the conference and the state. I think we’ll do well.”

Klank’s lead and ended with a teamhigh nine kills and two blocks. Senior setter Brooklyn Bachmann tallied 13 assists. The Indians admit that they have room for improvement in one particular area, however.

“We need to learn to speed up our game and not slow it down sometimes,” Minooka coach Carrie Prosek said.

“When we slow down, we hit more balls out. We’re serving balls out. That’s one thing that we’re going to focus on this week. When we’re playing, make sure that we keep playing at our tempo.”

Central came in and executed its plan.

The Steelwomen served aggressively and totaled four aces. Senior setter Brenna Rande hustled throughout the match and libero Kelli McGee and defensive specialist Taylor Lindeman were picking up some difficult hits.

After Minooka’s tall front row blocked the outside attack, Taylor Voss covered the block and kept the ball alive. McGee dove to keep it alive and Lindeman popped it over the net. “Coming into the conference, we knew that we were going to have new and difficult competition. In our previous conference, we knew what we were going up against. Going into this game, we were intimidated, but we were right there. Since we have new players this year, we just need to learn how to play with one another.”

“Our team is a young hitting team and we’re trying to improve on our hitting,” Central coach Suzzanne Bambule said. “I told our girls, you have to serve hard and strategically. We have a few tough servers. I tell them, you have to capitalize on someone else’s errors. You have to take advantage of that.

“We’re trying to work on having a little bit better communication, but that comes with being a young team. They continued to play, and I think that says a lot about our girls. They have a desire to keep playing no matter what the score is.”

No matter what the score was, a win is a win for Minooka. And the Indians are happy that everyone contributed and helped raise money for the 500th wish.

“Everyone got to play,” Prosek said.

“It’s the Hits for HUGS game, I’m happy that everyone saw the court especially since the girls knew Cadence Niccum.

It was special that all the poms and all of the volleyball players from both Minooka and Joliet Central came together for this one person.”

“This is a huge building year for us so defense is one of the things that we’ve been working on,” Cougars coach Amanda O’Boyle said. “One of the other things that we’ve been working on is after we’ve dug ourselves a hole, how do we get out. We did a great job of coming back in the second game but then kind of let them back in it. We just need to find the drive to finish.

“Last year we lost nine or 10 seniors and now we only have four. Three of our girls are sophomores and all three of them were on the court the entire time. So we’re just trying to come together as a new team. To get them to respond to what I’m putting out there is

really cool to see. I also like the fact that they don’t quit. They will fight tooth and nail to the end.”

In the opener, the Cougars grabbed a quick 5-2 lead but West responded with a 10-0 run to build a 12-5 advantage. Savana DelRose had two blocks and a kill during that run. West also got two aces and four digs from setter Areli Hernandez, two blocks from Monica Goedert and 10 digs from Emma Baxter.

“It was a little nerve-racking, especially since this was our first home game,” Hernandez said. “But as long as we stick together and can regroup, then we’re fine. Because we’re not that tall, we need to play great defense and if we do, then we’re set for the whole game.

We’re doing pretty well, especially with so many new girls on our team. But because a lot of us play club, we know how each of us play and we also have good team chemistry.”

Other leaders for South were Melissa Jordan (11 assists), Sophie Berta (six assists), Jenna Curbis (six digs) and Saddie Johnson (six digs).

JOLIET – There were plenty of ebbs and flows in Tuesday’s Southwest Prairie Conference girls volleyball match between Joliet West and Plainfield South, just as one might expect between two squads who have some inexperienced players. And thanks to the never-quit attitude of both sides, leads were hard to hang onto, especially during the final set.

It all resulted in another entertaining match in what figures to be a season of such contests in SPC play. After things went their way in the opener, the Tigers had to rally past the Cougars in the second set in order to capture a 2514, 25-21 victory in their home opener.

“We have some experience, but not a lot where they’re playing right now,” Tigers coach Al Mart said. “But I like our fight and our character. In the past when we were down 13-6 or 16-10 we could have very well said, ‘Let’s go to three.’ For us to win, wed have to do

little things. We have to serve tough, play defense and be aggressive. And I thought at that sequence when it was 17-10 and then we went up 19-17, we did a lot of the little things.

“They made some adjustments in their lineup and were putting some balls down. But we blocked, which we’re improving on, and we made some plays. It was a good match and they’re a good team and I’m sure when we see them again at their place and their game will be better and hopefully ours will be, too.”

After the Tigers (7-2, 2-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the finale, the Cougars (7-7-1, 1-2) went on a 13-3 spurt to grab a 13-6 advantage. Margaret Klebenow had two kills and two aces while Claire Griffin (seven kills) also had a pair of kills during that key run. A short time later, Griffin rattled off four straight kills to give South a 17-10 cushion.

Johnson out to rediscover magic in Chase

dgoss@shawmedia.com NASCAR’s wild – some would say chaotic – Chase for the Sprint Cup will begin Sunday afternoon with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400 at Chicagoland Speedway.

Jimmie Johnson is among the 16 drivers who have qualified for the 10-week, elimination-style playoff. If he can finish on top when it all concludes at Home- Jimmie stead-Miami in Novem- Johnson ber, he will tie Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Richard Petty for the most season championships ever – seven.

If. While Johnson has won two races this season, they came Feb. 28 at Atlanta and March 20 at California. In 13 races since early June, he has one topfive finish and three top-10s.

“The way the format is now, I was able to check the box early,” Johnson said. “The Chase is different than it had been. Now you can lock in early.”

The Chase kicks off with a Round of 16, with four drivers being eliminated after three races. Then comes the Round of 12, with four more eliminated after the sixth race. The Round of 8 will whittle the field to four after the ninth race. The four left standing enter Homestead with equal points, and whoever finishes the best in that race among those four wins the championship.

“I hope we are in it at Homestead and run our best race there,” Johnson said during a teleconference preceding last Saturday night’s race at Richmond, where he finished 11th.

A sure-fire method to avoid elimination in the Chase is winning a race each round. Race winners automatically advance to the subsequent round.

“I don’t have to beat everybody for 10 weeks with this format, I just have to beat them once and get there,” Johnson said. “The pressure that comes from trying to win races makes you better. We need to have that pressure on us and keep exposing ourselves to that.”

Johnson, who won five straight season championships from 2006 through

2010 and added the sixth in 2013, said it does not matter where the Chase begins, but Chicagoland Speedway is a natural.

“It’s important that it start in a larger market like Chicago,” he said.

“Through the years, I have had success at all the tracks in the Chase. So the order for me doesn’t matter, other than if we could run all 10 at Dover (his best track).”

Ironically, a broken part at Dover knocked out Johnson in the opening round of last year’s Chase.

Most of the regulars qualified for the Chase, and a few young drivers also are in the starting 16. Johnson said veterans may have an advantage with their experience, but that does not always hold.

“Veterans are probably smarter over the course of 10 races,” he said.

“Maybe they do not overreact to things as much. But I am proof that veterans still can do it wrong.”

His example came from him spinning out of his own accord during the Southern 500 at Darlington.

“I started punching the leg rest inside the car and yelled, ‘You idiot,

you know better,’ ” he said. “It’s a long race.”

The way things have been going, Johnson is not among the favorites entering the Chase. He was asked in the teleconference whether he feels the clock ticking on his chances to catch Earnhardt Sr. and Petty.

“If I grew up saying I wanted to tie Richard and Dale, I’d have an opinion,” he said. “But I didn’t. I never thought I would be in this position, but I am honored to be in this position. I’ve been playing with house money all these years. There’s nothing wrong with five in a row and nothing wrong with six.

“I don’t feel a clock ticking to win another championship. The clock I hear ticking is to be a race-winning car. We have produced consistent speed, we just don’t have the results to show for it the last few weeks.”

Perhaps Chicagoland Speedway will begin a reversal of fortune.

“You never know,” Johnson said.

“The Chase hasn’t started. We haven’t even seen everyone’s best equipment yet.

“This format is destined to produce chaos.”

Gibbs is again the favorite at the start of NASCAR’s Chase

The Associated Press CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The odds are once again stacked for Joe Gibbs Racing, the team with all four of its drivers in NASCAR’s playoffs.

Throw in Martin Truex Jr., who is aligned with the team, and the numbers point to a Toyota winning the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship for a second consecutive year.

Kyle Busch gave Toyota its first Cup title last season, and the first championship for team owner Joe Gibbs in a decade. His bid to repeat begins Sunday at Chicagoland Speedway, where the 10-race Chase begins.

His top competition could again come from within his own organization.

Including Truex, who drives for Furniture Row Racing in an alliance with JGR, the five Toyota drivers have combined for 13 wins through the first 26 races. They’ve led over 4,000 laps and again routed the field in the regular-season finale at Richmond by leading 385 of 407 laps in a Denny Hamlin win.

So can anyone beat their effort?

Well, Gibbs isn’t preparing any championship speeches just yet.

“There’s so many, I think, well prepared cars. This is going to be a battle,” Gibbs said. “There’s no way that you can pick a favorite right now.

Everybody that’s in there is going to have a shot.

“I think it’s the greatest reality show going.”

So who can beat the Toyota contingent?

KEVIN HARVICK: Although he has only two wins this year, Harvick should have been in victory lane a few more times.

The 2014 champion has been plagued by recurring pit crew problems, and Stewart-Haas Racing last week made two changes to his team after a slow final stop at Darlington cost him the win.

He doesn’t have the finishes to show for how good he’s been, but Harvick’s 1,211 laps led this year trails only Busch (1,244) and Truex (1,234).

He also leads the series in top-five finishes (13) and top-10s (21).

There’s nothing at all to suggest Harvick won’t be in the final four at the Nov. 20 finale at Homestead-Miami

Speedway. He made it last year, only to finish second to Busch in his bid to repeat his title.

Few are as hell-bent on winning as Harvick, who takes no prisoners and spares no feelings in his pursuit of a title.

BRAD KESELOWSKI and JOEY LOGANO:

There’s no doubt that Team Penske was deeply disappointed not to win the title the last two years.

Keselowski had six wins in 2014 and a strong Chase until a mechanical failure in the first race of the third round put him against the ropes. A pair of top-four finishes wasn’t enough to get him into the finale, and he settled for fifth in the final standings.

Last year was Logano’s year and he seemed unbeatable, particularly when the Chase began. Like Keselowski the year before, he too won six races, including three straight in the Chase.

But a feud with Matt Kenseth that wouldn’t go away blew up badly at Martinsville Speedway (same place as Keselowski’s problem a year earlier) and Kenseth intentionally wrecked Logano in a race Logano seemed poised to win.

Logano didn’t recover and failed to

make the finale as Penske was denied in yet another season it had dominated.

KYLE LARSON: So, Larson may be a stretch, and definitely not a favorite.

But it’s hard to count him out considering the way he’s running.

Larson has hit a groove this year, especially since winning his Chase-clinching race at Michigan last month. The third-year driver followed it with a third-place finish at Darlington, then hustled from 12th to second on a two-lap overtime sprint Saturday night at Richmond.

It’s Larson’s first appearance in the Chase, but he raced like a participant during his 2014 rookie year. He wasn’t eligible that season, but reeled off five consecutive top-six finishes in the first half of the Chase.

He hasn’t hit career numbers this year in many categories, but his 241 laps led is his best to date.

Larson’s biggest fight will be advancing through the first three rounds, but should he somehow make it to the final four, he considers Homestead one of his favorite race tracks. He’s not finished lower than 15th there, and was a career-best fifth last season.

Cardinals stall Cubs with win

ST. LOUIS – Brandon Moss broke out of a lengthy slump with a tiebreaking home run and Aledmys Diaz connected in his return to the starting lineup, leading the St. Louis Cardinals over the Cubs 4-2 Tuesday night.

The Cardinals ensured that the runaway Cubs won’t clinch the NL Central at Busch Stadium. The Cubs magic number is three, and the series in St. Louis wraps up Thursday.

St. Louis remained a half-game behind the New York Mets for the second wild-card spot.

Moss entered the game mired in a 1-for-41 skid. He hit a two-run homer in the sixth off Jason Hammel (14-9).

Dexter Fowler led off the game with a home run against Jaime Garcia.

Alex Reyes (2-1) won with 41/3 innings of scoreless relief. Kevin Siegrist got his second save. Moss singled in the second and scored on Diaz’s 15th homer of the season. Diaz started for the first time since July 31, when the All-Star shortstop broke his thumb.

CHICAGO – Todd Frazier and Carlos Sanchez each drove in two runs in a seven-run sixth inning, and the White Sox handed the division-leading Cleveland Indians their second straight lopsided loss, 8-1 on Tuesday night.

The Sox had seven hits, drew two walks and sent 12 batters to the plate against three pitchers in their highest-scoring inning of the season. The Indians, who have allowed 19 runs in two games, maintained a six-game lead over Detroit in the AL Central after the Tigers lost to Minnesota, 8-1.

Jose Quintana (12-10) held Cleveland to five hits over eight innings, including Brandon Guyer’s solo homer in the second in the Sox fifth win in seven games.

Tied at 1, Trevor Bauer (11-7) walked Adam Eaton to lead off the sixth. Four hits followed, with Jose Abreu driving in the first run and Frazier getting his career-high 92nd RBI to chase Bauer.

Avisail Garcia then delivered an RBI single, Sanchez tripled and Eaton doubled in a run in his second time

up to end Dan Otero’s night. Joe Colon came in and gave up a walk before Melky Cabrera grounded out to end a half-inning that took more than 30 minutes.

Dog days: Sox 2B Tyler Saladino heard barking between pitches in the first inning and wheeled around. He saw more than a thousand dogs in the outfield stands as the Sox set a record for most dogs to attend a sporting event. The team announced 1,122 dogs attended, which was confirmed by the Guinness Book of Worlds Records.

Trainer’s room: Sox: DH Justin Morneau (stiff neck) was out of the lineup and 1B Abreu moved to DH after getting hit in the nose and tweaking his ankle in separate plays Monday.

MORA brings urban sophistication, Asian flavors to Plainfield Mystery Diner PLAINFIELD – MORA Asian Fusion describes itself on its website as “the essence of Chicago’s dining experience” in the suburbs, and it does not disappoint, offering up style and sophistication in both its décor and cuisine from a location in charming downtown Plainfield.

I recently enjoyed lunch with a friend at the relatively new restaurant, which opened about seven months ago on Lockport Street.

The sunny patio with its clean wood furnishings, the dark hardwood in the entryway and the funky geometric bar all made a good first impression.

From there, my friend and I were led into the main dining room, which featured intricate paneling in white, black and gray; eclectic artwork in wood frames; and a wall completely lined with booth seating.

As we sat down and began to peruse the menu, I was happy to see sushi as an option and was surprised to find the prices were quite reasonable, which I’ve not always found to be the case at other eateries that serve sushi. I ordered a set of two rolls for $14, selecting the California and spicy crunchy salmon varieties.

The California roll was cool, clean and refreshing, with crab, masago, cucumber and sesame.

The salmon roll, on the other hand, offered crispiness and a little heat with its house-made tempura crumbs and spicy mayo paired with Scottish salmon and avocado.

My fellow diner selected adobo fried rice with a miso soup starter.

A recent graduate of culinary school, she deemed the soup’s tofu to be cooked perfectly and said the rice dish, with its fried egg, braised pork belly and scallions, provided well-balanced flavors.

To accompany our meal, we sipped teas chosen from the wide range of those served at MORA. I picked a white chrysanthemum herbal tea that was light and aromatic, while my friend went with the moonlight jasmine blossom tea.

In addition to the pleasant flavors of the teas, we enjoyed watching as the dried floral components of each beverage bloomed in its respective clear glass pot.

While MORA features a selection of salads, hot plates and sushi on its lunch menu, its dinner menu also offers small plates, such as “Angry

32 Prevention best remedy for neck pain Dear Dr. K: What treatments – besides drugs or surgery – will help to relieve my neck pain?

Dear Reader: Neck pain affects almost everyone at some time. Besides the physical discomfort, neck pain can trigger headaches and cause numbness, tingling or weakness in your arms. You might have trouble sleeping and difficulty turning your head.

If you suffer from constant neck pain, talk to your doctor. Neck pain that is constant, day after day for many months, is unusual and might have more serious causes. Your doctor can check to see if it is resulting from a medical condition such as arthritis.

Most neck pain is intermittent rather than constant, however. Such intermittent pain comes from muscle strains and tension caused by everyday situations such as slouching, poor posture or sleeping with your neck twisted.

For intermittent neck pain, try ice and heat therapy. Ice applied right after an acute injury such as a strain helps control immediate pain, stiffness and inflammation. Apply an ice pack for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, several times a day. (If you don’t have an ice pack handy, a bag of frozen vegetables can accomplish the same thing.) If the pain lingers more than 72 hours, switch to hot compresses or a heating pad, or take a warm shower.

Keep neck muscles strong and flexible by stretching them to further relieve soreness. Other treatments include acupuncture and the Alexander technique.

Acupuncture uses hair-thin needles to stimulate specific points on the body to trigger processes that relieve pain. The Alexander technique teaches you how to avoid unnecessary muscle tension by improving posture and alignment.

The best treatment for neck pain is prevention. Here are some ways to prevent it: • When sitting for long periods, avoid slouching or sitting with your head tilted forward. Sit straight, with your lower back supported by a pillow or lumbar support, feet flat on the floor and shoulders relaxed.

Stand every 20 minutes and stretch your neck muscles.

• Adjust your computer monitor so the top is at eye level. Use a document holder that holds your work at the same level as the screen.

• Position your car seat to a more upright position that supports your head and lower back. Avoid having to reach for the steering wheel. Your arms should be slightly flexed.

• Circular round foam pillows that wrap around your neck may relieve neck stress by supporting your neck when you sit or sleep.

• When you read in bed, use a wedgeshaped pillow to support your back and keep your neck in a neutral position.

If you think the problem is due to pillows that don’t support your neck at night, consider buying a memory foam pillow that adjusts to provide the needed support.

As I stress constantly, counting losers and winners when the dummy first appears is a vital step in accurate declarer-play. An ounce of effort then will save a pound of pain later when you go down in a contract that you should have made.

In this example, how should South play in four hearts after West leads the spade queen?

South opened with a textbook vulnerable weak two-bid: a good sixcard suit and 6-10 high-card points.

North took a shot at game, but if he had used the artificial two-no-trump inquiry, South would have rebid three no-trump to show a really good suit. Then North could have passed and had nine top tricks: two spades, six hearts and one club.

In four hearts, South has four losers -- one spade, one diamond and two clubs -- and those same nine winners. From where might a 10th trick come?

The chance of two club winners is very low. Instead, declarer should hope for a 4-3 diamond break and establish the diamond jack as a trick.

However, that requires ruffing three times in hand, so South needs four dummy entries. Given the spade lead has already removed the spade king, these must be the spade ace, both hearts and the club ace. Declarer must work on diamonds immediately.

At trick two, he plays a low diamond from the board. Suppose East wins with the nine and returns his second spade. South wins with the ace, ruffs a diamond, plays a heart to the 10, trumps a diamond, crosses to the heart queen, ruffs a third diamond, and draws trumps. Finally, declarer plays a club to the ace and discards a black-suit loser on the diamond jack.
