JOLIET – A planner for the city of Joliet bought the historic Dougall home at auction Monday with plans to restore it.

Barb Newberg paid $6,000, outbidding two or three other bidders, for the 19th-century house that is now dilapidated but once was home to Dr. William Dougall, who was commander of an African-American regiment that fought for the Union in the Civil War. “I’m thrilled to get it at the price I did because it could have gone for a lot more,” Newberg said.

Newberg said she plans to begin work on the house at 209 Union St. but noted she learned for the first time at the auction that she has to wait three months for the county to clear the house for ownership.

“That becomes a bit of a problem in getting work done on the house,” Newberg said, adding that she will see whether the ownership transition can be sped up for “a distressed property.”

All the 427 properties at the Will County Surplus Property Auction were distressed, having already been passed up at a tax sale.

“It’s property that no other tax investor wanted to invest in out of fear of not getting their money back,” said William Krieger, sales manager for Joseph E. Meyer & As-

Resignation another odd twist for McFarland

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – It’s been a strange year for Joliet Councilman Jim McFarland.

He was facing a DUI charge over a July incident and a potential reprimand from the City Council over his use of public envelopes for political mailings. And then McFarland resigned Friday, with it effective midnight Sept. 30. He stated in an email to the city manager that he is moving out of town, but has been vague about where he’s going.

“He is a smart kid, but it got the best of him,” said Don Walden, a trustee at Troy Township, where McFarland was trustee and later township clerk.

McFarland did not return phone calls made Friday or Monday from The Herald-News, but on Friday did send an email seeking to clarify a point in the initial article written about his resignation – a charge of driving without insurance had been dropped after he showed proof he had it. He noted in an email that he was in the quiet car of a train when contacted Friday and could not talk.

McFarland stated in an email sent Friday to The Herald-News that he was moving to Rockdale, and replied “OK” when told by text that would be reported. He later added in a text message that his business was staying on Essington Road in Joliet.

Not bidding on the Dougall home was Raychel Wesley, who last week objected to the city’s plans to sell the house to Newberg. Wesley, who was at the auction, said that after seeing the inside of the house she and her husband decided they did not want it.

One of the bidders was Candace Johnson, representing her employer, Joliet Rental Properties. Johnson was among those who had urged the Joliet Historic Preservation Commission to prevent demolition of the house.

“It’s a very neat house, and we think it should be preserved,” Johnson said.

Newberg, who is the city’s liaison to the commission, said she plans to live in the house, but may also convert it to a museum.

Asked whether he believed McFarland was moving to Rockdale, Walden said, “That might be just a statement.”

By Saturday, McFarland was reported to be telling others he was surprised to see the statement in the newspaper.

“He said, ‘Can you imagine The Herald-News putting in there that I’m going to Rockdale?’ ” said John Sheridan, president of the Cunningham Neighborhood Council.

Sheridan spoke with McFarland after a Coffee with the Councilman session on Saturday, at which McFarland reportedly told others that he was moving to be closer to his wife’s job in Chicago.

“I’m sorry to see him go,” said Sheridan, who credited McFarland with going “against the status quo” during his time on the council.

“When Jim spoke out on things, people didn’t like it because he wasn’t a head-nodder,” Sheridan said.

Still, Sheridan described McFarland at times as being “his own worst enemy,” such as his use of city envelopes and a postage meter at the Forest Preserve District of Will County, where McFarland formerly worked, to put out mailings considered political.

creating and passing a “local purchasing” ordinance to stimulate the local economy, and initiating a citywide testing program for fire hydrants.

But it also had items that one could argue could be shared efforts, or be credited to others. The list includes “Formalizing public speaking process, including adding an additional minute per public speaker.”

“He did get the extra minute. He did do that,” Sheridan said.

But it was Sheridan who pushed for formal procedures for public speaking at council meetings, even bringing ordinances from other cities as he sought more clarity on a number of council procedures.

Another accomplishment listed was “Pushing for the allocation to hire nine additional police officers for the neighborhood policing program.”

“I thought I brought that issue forward,” Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said of the police officers.

O’Dekirk said he did not know where McFarland was moving. The mayor said he tried to reach McFarland last week to ask about the rumors that he was moving out of town, since he could not serve on the council if he left Joliet.

“His response to me was one sentence,” O’Dekirk said. “He said he was out of town until Saturday. He emailed that to me on Thursday. Of course, then he resigned on Friday.”

Organizations partner to raise awareness as part of Hunger Action Month

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Every morning Monday through Friday, in all four seasons, people volunteer at the Plainfield Area Interfaith Food Pantry’s storage facility near Lake Renwick Forest Preserve.

The old Ozinga garage has five doors where deliveries from area grocery stores and private donors, who often don’t want the recognition, are sorted, pantry manager Pat Cork said.

“We have some very generous donors,” Cork said, commending one disabled military veteran who she estimated spends hundreds each month on donations to the pantry.

On Friday, the pantry received its first shipment as part of Hunger Action Month, which is the Feeding America network’s nationwide awareness campaign to take action on ending hunger.

Feeding America’s regional partner, the Northern Illinois Food Bank, has organized food donation drives this month throughout its 13-county network.

Although September is Hunger Action Month, action is taken to solve hunger each day. The Plainfield Area Interfaith Food Pantry and other area pantries experience this firsthand.

The Feeding America nationwide network of food banks secures and distributes 4 billion meals each year through pantries and meal programs in the United States.

However, it doesn’t seem to be enough. Hunger Action Month aims to raise awareness that will solve the problem nationally and locally.

One in seven people in Illinois struggles with hunger, same as the national average, according to FeedingAmerica. org. A 2014 study by the organization designated 60,220 Will County residents – or 8.8 percent of the county’s population – as “food insecure.”

Food insecurity may reflect a household’s need to choose between important basic needs, such as housing or medical bills, and purchasing nutritionally adequate foods.

With the average cost of a meal in Will County at $2.76, the Feeding America study also estimates about $29.6 million is needed to solve the hunger problem in Will County alone.

Hunger has been a local issue for decades, and with the growth of the Plainfield-Joliet area, it has grown.

When Cork moved in 2000 to Plainfield and began volunteering for the pantry, it supplied food to about 75 families. Since that time, Plainfield’s population has nearly quadrupled. It makes

sense, then, that there are more food insecure families.

The Plainfield Area Interfaith Food Pantry became a nonprofit in 2006, which allowed it to expand to a larger

storage facility to help meet the community’s needs, Cork said.

The pantry – one of more than 20 in Will County – supplies food monthly to between 200 and 230 families living in Plainfield School District 202. Around Thanksgiving and Christmas, it’s probably closer to 300 families, Cork said.

The Plainfield Area Interfaith Food Pantry distributes perishable foods every Wednesday and Saturday to families registered with the pantry, which follows the National School Lunch Program eligibility requirements. And from 8 to 11 a.m. every third Tuesday, the pantry distributes a vast range of

But more help is needed. Donating food is the most direct way to help.

The village of Plainfield, C.W. Avery Family YMCA, Plainfield Park District, Plainfield Public Library, Plainfield Area Chamber of Commerce and District 202 are accepting donations through Sept. 23 in honor of Hunger Action Month.

The food pantries are specifically seeking donations of oatmeal and cereal; canned chicken and tuna; peanut butter and jelly; pasta and pasta sauce; flour and sugar; rice; canned fruits and vegetables; soups and ramen; macaroni and cheese; condiments; and boxed potatoes. Also being sought are personal hygiene products, baby items, household cleaning products and paper products.

In an effort spearheaded

by Central student Marcos Singletary, 2,997 U.S. flags were planted on the front lawn of the school. Each flag represents a life that was lost.

For the memorial, Singletary collaborated with the Young America’s Foundation, according to a Joliet Township High School District 204 news release.

Students at schools across the nation annually display 2,997 U.S. flags to remember those who died.

Bench trial begins for Joliet man accused of slaying mother in 2013

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A trial began Monday for a Joliet man accused of brutally using two knives and a baseball bat to kill his mother before dumping her body in the Des Plaines River.

Lawyers for both sides agree Charles “C.J.” McCullum, 24, killed Jeanie Parker on March 20, 2013, at their home in the 100 block of Fifth Avenue in Jo- Charles “C.J.” liet. But Will County McCullum Assistant State’s Attorney Mike Fitzgerald said McCullum’s “brutal and heinous” actions warrant a life sentence in prison while defense attorney Stephen Whitmore said McCullum’s history of mental illness shows he is “not guilty by reason of insanity.”

Instead of being presented to a jury, Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes will hear the case as a bench trial.

McCullum choked his mother until

she became unconscious during an argument in her bedroom and left to go to a neighbor’s house, Fitzgerald said.

“When he came back, he saw his mother had pulled a blanket over herself. He got a knife and thrust it into her [so the blade] bent. He went downstairs and got another knife, stabbed her [several more times], stabbed the knife into her chest, got a wooden baseball bat and hammered it into her to break off [the knife] handle,” Fitzgerald said.

McCullum later admitted to police using the bat to “split her head open,” Fitzgerald said.

McCullum then dragged his mother’s body down the stairs and out to the garage where he put it in the trunk of his brother’s blue Dodge Intrepid. He drove to Bluff Park and threw her body over a fence into the Des Plaines River.

Parker’s body was found in the water on April 13, 2013, but police began investigating McCullum hours after the slaying when Parker failed to keep her daily visit with a neighbor.

Joliet Officer Brad Southard saw blood smears near the garage and ser-

vice door of Parker’s house when he went over for a welfare check, he testified. Alessio Policandriotes also watched a video police recorded inside the house that appears to show blood trails on the floor.

Joliet Officer Michael Cochran testified McCullum was completely compliant and seemed withdrawn when he was taken into custody on Houbolt Road later that morning after police were alerted to look for the car.

Whitmore said McCullum was diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic when he was hospitalized four months before Parker’s slaying. The following month, medical personnel reported he was suffering from “auditory hallucinations” and had been prescribed anti-psychotic medication.

“He believed his mother was giving him signals to kill his brother,” Whitmore said.

McCullum also allegedly believed he was going to become a professional basketball player, but “had to hurt his mother to achieve being in the NBA,” Whitmore said.

The trial will continue Tuesday.

Mohammad Khalik, 27, of the 500 block of Algonquin Street, was charged with aggravated assault, unlawful use of a weapon and disorderly conduct, Joliet Police Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said Monday.

The charges come after Joliet police responded about 3:35 p.m. Sunday to a report of a domestic dispute in the 500 block of North Briggs Street.

“The victim believed [Khalik] was going to shoot them, but she made no statement that he raised the gun, just that he was holding it,” Gregory said.

The incident report states that Khalik then left the area and police arrived.

The victim told police that Khalik could be found at home, and officers went to Khalik’s residence, one block east.

Police interviewed him and found a semiautomatic handgun. Gregory noted that Khalik had a valid firearm owners identification card, but Joliet police have sent information to Illinois State Police to have the card revoked under the clear and present danger statute.

LOCAL BRIEFS Shorewood to receive state grant to help fund new park

SHOREWOOD – The village of Shorewood will soon receive a $400,000 state grant that will go toward improving an area park.

Shorewood received the $400,000 Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development grant from the state last year, but the actual release of the money was put on hold due to the state’s budget impasse.

Shorewood officials were recently notified that the grant would be released for the Lake Forrest Park site, according to a news release issued Monday by the village.

The new 4.46-acre park site will be located on South Wynstone Drive near West Prairiewood Lane. The park will be constructed in 2017 with a total estimated budget of $800,000. Half of the project will be funded by the OSLAD grant, and the village will pay for the remainder.

The 2017 construction will include various athletic fields, including a soccer field and baseball field, as well as a games area, play environment, a splash pad, shade sails and fitness stations, according to the news release.

“We worked with our state legislators to help free up this previously appropriated funds so we can bring this project to reality,” Mayor Rick Chapman said in the news release. “It is very important that we provide facilities to the south of the village.”

To that end, the CEF Scholarship Program provides more than 1,600 need-based tuition assistance grants for students enrolled in Catholic schools of the Diocese of Joliet.

CEF Grade School Scholarships of $700-$1500 per student are available for students entering Kindergarten through 8th Grade.

The districts said in online statements that they offered a wage increase to drivers and agreed to the union’s proposed increase for bus aides – but without fair share.

MINOOKA – Minooka school officials and the union representing bus drivers and aides met late last week for contract negotiations once again, but an agreement was not reached.

Teamsters Local 179 – representing Districts 111 and 201 bus drivers and aides – posted on its website Friday about the negotiations that occurred that day. Union officials said the districts’ conduct in the negotiations is “nothing less than shameful” and has “unfortunately increased the likelihood of further disruption to bus services.”

Officials from Districts 111 and 201 posted statements that were similar Saturday, saying the issues of fair share – where nonunion members pay dues – and maintenance of standards “remained stumbling blocks.

Future mediation dates have yet to be scheduled.

“We’re making progress every time we meet. It’s just never a quick process,” District 201 Superintendent Kris Monn said.

Schematic design of new courthouse being evaluated

Public safety complex construction to start Sept. 15

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The complete schematic designs of the new Will County Judicial Complex have been submitted to Will County officials.

The designs were submitted Aug. 19 and various stakeholders met with the design team, Wight & Company, on Aug. 29, 30 and 31 to go over details of the design, Will County Executive Office Deputy Chief of Staff Dave Tkac said.

Though the schematic design has been completed, Tkac noted a lot of decisions still have to be made regarding flow of the public into the building, as well its mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, and other technical aspects.

The project manager, Gilbane Construction, is now assessing Wight & Company’s design to reach a final project cost estimate. The project was given a $195 million budget by the Will County Board.

Tkac said an in-depth presentation detailing the schematic design and associated costs will be made Sept. 20 to the Capital Improvements Committee.

The completion of the schematic design means about 25 percent of the total design effort has been fulfilled, Tkac said. During the next 12 to 18 months, architects and engineers will hammer out the finer details of the complex.

When the new Will County Public Safety Complex is completed to replace the existing Will County

Sheriff’s Office on Laraway Road, it will allow the Will County sheriff to vacate offices in the First Midwest Bank Building in downtown Joliet adjacent to the existing Will County Courthouse. The bank building will be torn down and the lot will become the home of the new Will County Judicial Complex.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the new, $30 million Will County Public Safety Complex has been scheduled for 10 a.m. Oct. 7. Construction is on track to begin Sept. 15, Tkac said.

During the week of Sept. 19, workers will be on-site to perform work as part of bid package one. This includes excavation, site utilities and digging the site’s retention pond.

Tkac said the deadline for the second bid package was pushed back two weeks – from Wednesday to Sept. 21 – after an addendum was made Aug. 29 to the project. He said contractors were not comfortable bidding on the project on short notice because a lot of information about the build was added and there wasn’t enough time to review it. Tkac said this date will not impact the target date of completion.

A joint meeting Tuesday of the Will County Board’s Capital Improvements and Finance Committees brought approval of a 2 percent contingency to be included in the project budget, Tkac said. This portion of the budget will cover any unforeseen costs that were not included in the design and development phase. Spending these dollars will have to receive Capital Committee approval, he said.

The union and some members have also questioned the safety of the buses.

Monn said the buses have issues and at times have broken down, but it doesn’t mean they are unsafe. John

Troy, District 111 assistant superintendent of business and general counsel, said the district has more than 100 buses with ongoing maintenance that go through rigorous checks.

District 111 has guidelines and qualifications it has to follow with buses, Superintendent Kenneth Lee said.

“We follow those and we take those seriously because we are transporting our most valuable assets,” he said.

Jodi was also a Mary Kay consultant, and was an active volunteer at Rialto Square Theatre for 25 years.

Jodi was a caring and devoted wife, daughter, and mother. Her love for her children knew no boundaries. She will be remembered for many endearing qualities including her loving and unselfish personality.

Surviving are her beloved husband, Thomas F. SPRINGFIELD – For the first time in recent history, Illinois Republicans are vastly outspending Democrats in fall legislative races with the help of a wealthy governor determined to curtail a traditionally blue political landscape that has thwarted his agenda for two years.

The more than $13 million the GOP’s main campaign committee has disbursed to House and Senate candidates so far – nearly all of it coming from Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner – dwarfs what either party has been able to spend sometimes in entire election cycles. And the Illinois Republican Party Committee still has $3 million from Rauner in the bank.

“This is a new ballgame and we’re taking it very seriously,” said Rep. Barbara Flynn Currie, the Democrats’ House leader.

Before Rauner, the Illinois Republican Party Committee spent $3.4 million on races in 2012. The Democratic Party of Illinois, meanwhile, spent $6.7 million.

Both parties distribute money to candidates through several other committees so those totals don’t tell the entire story, but they’re indicative of each party’s past spending prowess, according to campaign disclosures The Associated Press analyzed dating back to 2006 from the Illinois State Board of Elections.

“There’s never been a time in recent history where House Republicans have outspent House Democrats. It’s been a considerable disadvantage,” said Rep. Jim Durkin, the GOP’s House leader.

Breaking the Democrats’ supermajorities in either chamber won’t be easy because the party enjoys advantages of 71-47 in the House and 39-20 in the Sen-

ate. But Durkin said Rauner’s money “for the first time in many years gives us a fighting chance.”

Rauner has repeatedly declined to comment on the legislative races or his involvement in them.

On the Democrats’ side, their party committees have been less active than the Republicans’ this year. The Democratic Party of Illinois and the Democratic Majority – two of the party’s biggest committees – have contributed a combined $1.6 million to candidates so far.

But the Democrats’ candidates have individually amassed robust campaign funds. Democratic Rep. John Bradley, for instance, has $647,160 at his disposal for his closely watched race against Dave Severin in southern Illinois.

That’s what makes Rauner’s money so significant in a state where Democrats tend to be more successful fundraisers.

The majority of Severin’s $300,000 in campaign cash has come from the House Republican Organization committee, which is receiving large deposits from the Illinois Republican Party to funnel to candidates.

City, police investigating Bloomington coliseum management

BLOOMINGTON – City officials in Bloomington said they’re working with Illinois State Police to investigate past operations at the city-owned U.S. Cellular Coliseum.

The venue seats up to 8,000 people and hosts concerts and sporting events. It opened in 2006. On Monday, city officials said in a news release that the investigation focuses on the venue’s operations before the facility’s current management company took over.

Bloomington Mayor Tari Renner said questions surfaced while the city was closing out financial paperwork during the management transition. Central Illinois Arena Management operated the facility from its 2006 opening until March 31, when the company’s contract expired. The city signed a five-year management contract with new manager, VenuWorks, in June.

American man arrested in Nepal on charges of child sex abuse

KATHMANDU, Nepal – An American who has been a frequent visitor to Nepal has been arrested in the capital’s tourist district on charges of sexually abusing children.

The Central Bureau of Investigations said in a statement Monday that Kenneth Joseph Coombs and a local man arrested with him were being held for further investigation.

Five boys were rescued after police raided Coombs’s hotel room in Kathmandu over the weekend. The raid was initiated after police got information from boys who had been abused there.

Police said Coombs, 48, was from Illinois and had last entered Nepal on Aug. 23.

Other details were not given because the case involved underage victims.

Clinton scrambling to head off weekend fallout

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Hillary Clinton’s campaign is scrambling to head off lasting damage from her brutal weekend.

Aides are promising to release more of her medical records after her bout of pneumonia and conceding they were too slow in providing information about her condition.

Democrats said Monday that Clinton’s health incident alone is unlikely to fundamentally alter the presidential race, but some also said it adds to a growing sense of uncertainty less than two months from Election Day. For many supporters, Clinton’s battle with Republican Donald Trump is worryingly close, raising concerns not only about holding the White House, but also retaking control of the Senate.

“If you look at the way the last couple months have gone, it feels like the race should be further apart,” said Greg Haas, an Ohio-based Democratic strategist and former county party chairman.

Aaron Regunberg, a Democratic state representative from Rhode Island, said he was “surprised and concerned” that the race is so tight.

“I still think that we are likely to win, but I think anyone who’s not concerned about a bigoted, KKK-endorsed sociopath being this close right now in the polls is not living in reality,” Regunberg said of Trump.

Clinton abruptly left a 9/11 anniversary event Sunday in New York and was seen on video stumbling and being held up by aides. After a staff shake-up in August, Trump has largely abandoned the free-wheeling style of campaigning that energized his supporters but also led to an endless string of controversial comments about women, minorities and others. The Republican nominee’s newfound ability to stay on script has coincided with tightening in both national polls and surveys in some key swing states.

Democrats are also warily watching a Senate landscape that looked to be favorable for the party if Trump proved to be a drag on GOP candidates.

But Rob Portman in Ohio has distanced himself from Trump and appears headed for re-election, and Republicans are also feeling more confident in Florida since Marco Rubio reversed course and decided to run for re-election.

“The last few days feed into a sense of uncertainty,” said Chris Kofinis, a Democratic strategist. He said Clinton’s rough weekend raises the stakes for the first presidential debate on Sept. 26, which “will either finish Trump or, if he does well, it will create a race.”

The Dakota Access pipeline, what now?

BISMARCK, N.D. – A federal judge on Monday kept in place a previous work-stoppage order on a small portion of the nearly 1,200-mile Dakota Access oil pipeline while federal agencies review construction permits for the site, which the Standing Rock Sioux tribe says is sacred ground.

But much has yet to be settled when it comes to the pipeline that’ll run from North Dakota to Illinois, including whether the company will respond to the federal agencies’ request for a voluntary, broader work stoppage in that area.

HOW WE GOT HERE

Dallas-based Energy Transfer Partners obtained federal permits for the $3.8 billion pipeline in July, two years after it was first announced.

The project would carry a half-million barrels of crude oil daily from western North Dakota’s oil fields through South Dakota and Iowa to an existing pipeline in Patoka, Illinois, where shippers can access Midwest and Gulf Coast markets.

Supporters say the pipeline would

create more markets and reduce truck and oil train traffic.

But the Standing Rock Sioux, other tribes and environmental groups say that the pipeline could threaten water supplies for millions, since it will cross the Missouri River, as well as harm sacred sites and artifacts.

Since April, there’s been a tribal protest at the confluence of the Cannonball and Missouri rivers, and it has grown considerably – thousands gathered last week. Nearly 40 have been arrested as the protest has grown in size, including Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Chairman David Archambault II.

KEY CLAIMS

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe sued federal regulators for approving the oil pipeline, challenging the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ decision to grant permits at more than 200 water crossings and arguing that the pipeline would be placed less than a mile upstream of the reservation, potentially impacting drinking water for more than 8,000 tribal members and millions of people who rely on it further downstream.

The lawsuit said the project violates several federal laws, including the Na-

tional Historic Preservation Act. The tribe also worries the project will disturb ancient sacred sites outside of the 2.3 million-acre reservation.

Energy Transfer Partners disputes those claims, saying the pipeline would include safeguards, such as leak detection equipment, and that workers monitoring the pipeline remotely in Texas could close valves within three minutes if a breach is detected.

THE LEGAL PROCESS

The Standing Rock Sioux’s effort to temporarily block construction near its reservation on the North Dakota-South Dakota border was denied by U.S. District Judge James Boasberg on Friday.

But minutes later, federal officials ordered a temporary halt to construction of the pipeline on Army Corps land around and underneath Lake Oahe – one of six reservoirs on the Missouri River. It also asked for a “voluntary pause” of work by Energy Transfer Partners for 20 miles on either side of Lake Oahe, to which ETP has not indicated its position, though it noted in an email that work was ongoing elsewhere in the four other states.

Boasberg declined Monday to grant

the tribe’s request to “formalize” the government’s desired work stoppage, but kept in place an earlier order to halt construction from State Highway 1806 to 20 miles east of Lake Oahe.

WHAT’S THE TIMETABLE?

No one – neither the company, nor the tribe, nor federal agencies – has said.

The Departments of Justice, the Army and the Interior said Friday that it won’t authorize construction on corps land bordering or under Lake Oahe until it re-examines its permitting decision-making process.

Looking for better results

Dear Mr. Berko: My wife and I are 73 and recently retired after being in the commercial, industrial and multifamily building business for 43 years.

We’ve been conservative in business, and we’re comfortably retired, with a portfolio worth $3.6 million. We also own six income properties and several solid mortgages. I thought our stockbroker did a fair job managing our money, but since 2013, according to our new certified public accountant, the broker has earned $103,000 in commission on 326 trades.

I hadn’t been paying attention.

Our account went up by 4.7 percent between 2014 and 2015, but so far this year, it’s down 1.9 percent. Our CPA won’t recommend a broker. He says, “They and their bosses are all crooks.”

He recommends that I use Northern Trust to manage our account. My wife knows several people at Northern Trust and says they’re “stuffy prudes.” We want to be able to establish a comfortable, personal relationship with the person who manages our account. Do you have any recommendations? Your broker probably meets that definition because there’s been a lot of trading and churning going on.

But there are 381,734 brokers (give or take) in the U.S., and even I know a few good ones. There are thousands of class-act brokers whom I don’t know, but it’s the bad ones who make headlines.

Before they kicked me out of Cleveland’s Plain Dealer newspaper, I visited with some folks at Northern Trust who were delightful, knowledgeable and fun folks to know.

Northern is a great institution. I’m sorry your wife’s experience has been disappointing. Cleveland Trust has a good reputation, too. So do KeyBank and PNC. Several readers I know have accounts at Northern Trust and Cleveland Trust and enjoy companionable relations with their representatives. Their only complaint is that their accounts are too conservatively managed. Sometimes that can be good, though. I have no personal knowledge

of KeyBank or PNC, but I recommend that you interview them.

When working with a trust department at one of these companies, be mindful that your $3.6 million portfolio may be one of the department’s smaller accounts. Basically, you’re a small fish in a big lake. And though you’ll always get a fair shake, keep in mind that a fair shake can include average results. But average results are why most trust departments don’t lose accounts. If you, like many people, are satisfied with average results, such a trust department will get the job done. But if you want superior returns, you may have to search elsewhere. If you’re willing not to give up on your current broker altogether, he could recommend a modestly aggressive “off-site” money manager.

Your account would remain where it is but would be managed by an off-site professional approved by the firm that employs your broker. It would probably cost you about 1.5 percent yearly, and the current broker would get a piece of the action. But be aware that you wouldn’t have conversational access to this manager; rather, your current broker would serve as an intermediary.

Now, I don’t recommend going it

alone, because it’s too darn confusing and dangerous out there. You must find an experienced, wise and caring money manager whom you can trust implicitly. This professional should be comfortable telling you why he or she would buy Illinois Tool Works, Steel Dynamics, Realty Income, Pfizer, BD, Air Products and Chemicals, McCormick, Rockwell Automation, J.M. Smucker, Erie Indemnity, Total System Services, Globus Medical, Zimmer, Energy Transfer Equity, C.R. Bard, Middlesex Water Co., Sysco, Accenture, Edwards Lifesciences, Bruker, Johnson & Johnson, Cisco, Omega Healthcare Investors, W.P. Carey, and Southern Co. in your account. And he or she should be comfortable telling you why he or she may write call options on these issues and how options could add significantly to your cash flow and potentially increase your total return by between 1 percent and 3 percent.

And I’m sorry that I don’t know any Cleveland professionals well enough to recommend a name.

cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Christine Scheibe feels blessed to have been able to coach girls volleyball at Joliet Catholic Academy and she’s definitely accomplished a great deal during her 17 years leading the varsity program.

On Monday, she achieved another milestone, and was quick to share the credit for her joining an elite group of

coaches who have won 500 matches in such a short amount of time.

Scheibe is believed to be just the fourth coach in state history to claim her 500th victory in 17 or fewer seasons. She joins Mother McAuley’s Nancy Pedersen, Lockport’s Julia Hudson and Mount Pulaski’s Donna Dulle in that exclusive club.

And as a bonus, the historic win came in impressive fashion as JCA grabbed big leads in both sets to cap-

ture a 25-17, 25-18 nonconference road win over rival Providence Catholic.

“We’ve had a lot of talent and girls who want to play hard and want to win,” said Scheibe, who owns a 500-14310 record. “So I don’t feel like I can take the credit, I can only take them so far.

They’re the ones who have to go out there day in and day out and perform.

I know that this group was really excited to be the group that got the 500th win. I think it’s a little pressure off of

them and a little pressure off of me. So now we can just go on from here.”

Scheibe was very pleased that her Angels (10-6-1) played much more aggressively than in their last match, when they fell at Carl Sandburg. Combining that type of hitting and serving with good defense, JCA turned in a very efficient performance against the Celtics (6-5).

Hits for HUGS special to Minooka program GIRLS VOLLEYBALL STATS

kjasnica@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Going into the girls volleyball season, Minooka had great things to look forward to.

A high preseason ranking. Three junior pin hitters who are touted as among the best players in the state.

An athletic senior leader returning as setter. And a libero determined to prove Minooka isn’t all hitters.

There’s something else that the Indians look forward to each season, however.

On Tuesday, Minooka will face off with Joliet Central in the annual Hits for HUGS match.

To each of the players, it is much more than an average volleyball match. It’s even more important than a rivalry game.

“This game raises awareness of the Shorewood HUGS foundation.

It’s not just a game, it’s a fundraiser for well-deserving people,” senior defensive specialist Matti Ziech said.

“The HUGS game is a big deal for our team. We love being able to give back to the community.”

“The Shorewood HUGS game has been one that the community and the volleyball program look forward to each year,” Indians coach Carrie Prosek said. “Minooka’s program began partnering with HUGS since the previous head coach, Chris Hoelscher, was with Minooka volleyball. Chris was actually the 300th recipient a couple of years ago. Since the partnership, we have had nothing but support from people in and out of the Minooka and Channahon area.”

The Hits for HUGS match marks the first time this season a match means a lot more than volleyball to the neighboring communities. Many area schools do charity games, but the Indians are one of the area teams that can see the direct impact that their charity event has.

Shorewood HUGS works locally and grants a wish each year to someone in need in the immediate area.

The money doesn’t go to a higher-up corporate official. The money goes directly to those who need help.

Before the match against Joliet Central, Shorewood HUGS will award its 500th wish to Cadence Niccum.

Niccum graduated from Minooka in 2015 and had been an active member of the Arrowette dance team. In her fall semester of her freshman year at Illinois State, she was diagnosed with Stage 3 Hodgkins lymphoma.

As many of the HUGS games do, this one will hit close to home for the girls.

What means more to them isn’t what they donate as individuals going into the game. It’s the community’s involvement and desire to give back.

The Indians are appreciative of the neighboring schools that support the cause, and the teachers, school staff and neighboring community that participate in the Hits for HUGS night year after year.

This year, Hits for HUGS is accepting donations of coats. Anyone who brings a coat to the game will be admitted for free. There also will be

“I believe it affects me more because two years ago, my family and I had a house fire and we were recipients of the Shorewood HUGS,” Ziech said. “I saw firsthand where the money went and how they came to our aid in time of need.”

“It is a huge honor that we will be giving out their 500th wish,” Prosek said. “As a program, we feel honored and we are so happy to help Cadence and Shorewood HUGS.”

“We were trying to go after things aggressively,” Scheibe said. “I thought our serve was really strong and almost every one of our passes in serve-receive went right to target.

And when we’re able to pass like we did tonight, we’re able to run our offense and we’ve got a lot of different weapons that we can use for that. One of the things that we talked about before the match was going out and taking the lead and making them chase us.”

In the opening set, the Angels took advantage of several hitting errors to build up a 20-10 lead at one point.

During a 5-0 run that produced the 10-point cushion, Emmie Naal (three kills) had a kill, Meg Sliwa (15 digs) served an ace and Morgan Leuszler (five block kills) added a block kill.

Emily Holbrook (eight kills) concluded the first set with another kill.

“She definitely deserves this for everything that she’s done for us,” Holbrook said of Scheibe. “There was a lot of energy in the gym and the rivalry really brought the energy up.

We were all fired up to play before and during the game and definitely put up a good fight.

“We learn about ourselves in ev-

ery match and just keep getting better every time we practice and it really shows in games. Everyone is really close and gets along and we’re best friends and that shows on the court, as well.”

In the finale, the Celtics took a 4-2 lead but JCA used a 9-1 run to move in front for good. During that burst, Naal had an ace and two kills and Leuszler added a kill and a block kill. Sarah Nahas had 15 assists and 10 digs and Emily Jones added three kills for the Angels.

“We’ve been pushing for 500 (wins) for a long time so to finally be able to achieve it feels great,” Leuszler said.

“We’re the team that got 500 and no other team is going to do that.

“Our goal has been to get better every single week. We want to make little improvements since we’re working toward November. We’ve really picked up our game in practice because we know that will transfer over to games. Everybody has been working together and pushing each other to get better. We have so much potential, and we’re not at our full game yet.”

The Angels built a 21-13 lead in the final set before the Celtics used a late burst to make things interesting.

Singing Hall of Famers’ praise from rooftop VIEWS Dick Goss Longtime WJOL radio voice Frank O’Leary has not lost his touch.

That was apparent Saturday night when O’Leary, Nikki Lunsford, Dale Coyne, Bernie Gerl and John Jones were on the rooftop at the Joliet Area Historical Museum, being inducted into the Joliet Area Sports Hall of Fame as the Class of 2016.

Frank After being preO’Leary sented by master of ceremonies Scott Slocum, O’Leary made his way to the podium and said, “Why do they make an old man walk the farthest to get up here?”

He referenced his – let’s say advanced – age: “I came to WJOL in 1955. Don’t do the math, I am only 72.”

And, he noted his appreciation on being selected. “I want to thank the committee for putting me in this Hall of Fame because it shows you will take anyone,” he said.

O’Leary said the late Don Ladas, a member of the inaugural Hall of Fame class in 2003, indoctrinated him into Joliet area sports in his early years at WJOL. He largely broadcast Lockport and Lincoln-Way basketball and football games, and he learned along the way, “This truly is the City of Champions. I saw some great athletes.”

O’Leary still enjoys a good laugh as evidenced by his exaggerated tales involving Slocum, who has been at WJOL for well over 20 years now. A few in the crowd of about 230 told me it was great to hear O’Leary’s voice again. It brought back good memories.

The audience also appreciated hearing from and getting to know the other inductees better.

Gerl was a left-handed hitting catcher who might have been the first catcher to wear glasses in professional baseball. Clint Courtney gets the credit as Bernie Gerl the first in the major leagues, but Gerl said he began his pro career, in glasses, two years before Courtney began his.

Generally considered one of the best ballplayers to come out of Joliet area, Gerl’s career course was altered by a stint in the Army in World War II and then a horrific 1948 bus crash that killed four of his Duluth Dukes

I had the pleasure of presenting Bernie, and he had some fun baseball stories to relate that involved major league stars such as Hank Aaron and Roger Maris, whom he played against in the Northern League. While playing ball in the service, he lined a single over the shortstop’s head the first time he faced Early Wynn.

“I thought, ‘That’s not bad,’ ” Gerl said. “The next three times I faced him, he struck me out.”

He also told of catching three popups in one inning. He said he has not heard of any catcher ever doing that, and no one in the audience responded positively to his question about whether they ever heard of it.

Pat Sullivan, a member of the Hall of Fame, presented Jones, the longtime basketball coach at Lemont and later an assistant at John Jones Joliet Junior College.

He was on coach Pat Klinger’s staff at JJC when they won the national championship in 1994.

“Seven of those kids that we had went on to start for NCAA tournament teams,” Jones said.

Jones also left his mark when he

founded the Lemont Christmas Classic, which introduced the revolutionary format of small- and large-school divisions.

Jones emphasized that while everyone always credits the coach for touching lives, “when you are a coach, there are so many people who touch your life. You walk down the streets of Lemont, and almost everyone graduated from Lemont High School. I am a byproduct of those kids.”

Lynne Lichtenauer, former longtime director of alumni relations and development for the Joliet Township high schools, presented Lunsford, whose career Nikki Brandolino took off when she was Lunsford young. Then Nikki Brandolino, she won the IHSA state tournament as a Joliet West student and went to succeed professionally and star in women’s amateur bowling in this area.

She said the thanks for her career go to her family, with an assist from Jim Stefanich, the 1968 PBA Bowler of the Year who was a member of the inaugural Hall of Fame class. “He taught me a lot when I was young,” Lunsford said.

lielmucci presented Coyne, a Minooka graduate who began his professional racing career as an open-wheel driver, then managed a race team with Bears legend Walter Payton. When Payton passed away in 1999, the team was renamed Dale Coyne Racing, which operates out of Plainfield as the owner of an IndyCar team.

Coyne, who was unable to attend the induction ceremony, also designed Route 66 Raceway in 1998, catching the attention of Indianapolis Motor Dale Coyne Speedway CEO Tony George. In addition to Sullivan, others inducted earlier into the Hall of Fame who attended the ceremony were Bob Basarich, Barb Burk, Pam Gant, Jeff Hickman, Henry Pillard, Matt Senffner and Billy Boy Thompson. How’s that group for a “Who’s Who” of Joliet area sports? They helped make the night the success it was.

I had lunch with Thompson a few days earlier, and he showed me the picture with George Foreman, taken during Thompson’s visit to Houston in early August, that accompanies this column. Thompson lost to George Foreman on a second-round TKO in the Olympic Trials in 1968 at Toledo, Ohio, but not before he knocked down Foreman in the first round.

“I fought Billy Boy one time as an amateur and he really had me rolling,” Foreman later was quoted.

“Boy, did he hit me hard.”

You could say all the members of the Class of 2016, and those who were inducted before them, are hard hitters in their own right.

Saturday’s ceremony was rolled into the museum’s “Sports Bash: A Celebration of Champions” fundraiser. Following the induction, the Ambassadors of Jazz band provided entertainment and former Bears Steve McMichael and Glen Kozlowski, along with former Bulls guard Craig Hodges, helped Gugliemucci conduct a live auction.

Proceeds from the night will benefit the museum’s Collections and Exhibits department to kick off fundraiser efforts for the permanent Joliet Area Sports Hall of Fame exhibit.

Ben Roethlisberger recovered his own fumble at a pivotal moment and didn’t look back, throwing three touchdown passes to lead the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 38-16 victory over the Washington Redskins on Monday night.

Kyle Hendricks took a no-hitter into the ninth inning before giving up Jeremy Hazelbaker’s leadoff home run, and the Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-1, Monday night to close in on the NL Central crown.

Radiologist develops in-flight emergencies app

PEORIA – Stepping up to the call in the air “Is there a doctor on board?” can quickly overwhelm even experienced physicians confronted by unfamiliar conditions in even more unfamiliar surroundings, but a Peoria doctor has developed an app to help.

Dr. Ray Bertino, an interventional radiologist, helped develop airRx after his own experience with in-flight emergencies – both as a doctor responding to a call and as a patient in need of care – made it clear most doctors are ill-equipped to handle these out-of-the-norm situations.

“I’ve kind of seen it from both ends, and there’s really no tools out there to help the physician who’s helping a person on a plane,” Bertino said.

In addition to being outside of their

scope of practice, physicians in the air usually won’t have any idea what kind of tools or medications are on board, how to interact with the pilot and airline staff, what legal issues might apply to their situation or how decisions should be made whether to divert a flight to seek more formal medical attention on the ground.

“The truth of the matter is you may have an urologist taking care of a seizure patient or a pediatrician taking care of somebody with chest pains, and they are going to feel quite uncomfortable going into the situation for several reasons,” Bertino said.

While all doctors will receive some of the basic level medical training, most will concentrate on a certain area during practice, and might be long removed from that basic education.

“I’m in radiology, but I have a lot of experience. I may not know what

to do to deliver a baby or I may question about what I should be doing with somebody with a seizure,” he said, “but if somebody gives me a cookbook and tells me things to do then it becomes pretty easy, especially given the fact that in the air there’s limited things you can do.”

AirRx, which hit the Apple App Store May 17 and followed on Android a few weeks later, features bulleted lists for how to evaluate and treat 23 of the most common medical emergencies that occur in flight ranging from cuts and headaches to cardiac arrest, strokes and baby delivery, even what to do if someone dies on board a plane.

It’s already been used twice in air, Bertino said, by two of the 20-something doctors that helped test the app during development.

The goal of the app, developed by Peoria-based CSE Software with input

from doctors such as Bertino and Melissa Mattison at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, was to provide useful information quickly in a way that is easy to access and understand.

The application is downloaded once for a cost of $5.99 then all the information is stored on the phone so the app can be accessed in full while the device is in airplane mode.

It also contains more than just medical information. airRx features a “Medical Legal” section that addresses concerns many doctors have about liability, citing the U.S. Good Samaritan Act that offers protection as well as the fact that to the developers’ knowledge, no individual physician has been successfully sued anywhere in the world for care delivered to a traveler. It provides background information on the flight crew and ground support and the kind of help they can provide.

JOLIET – Sometimes a child is simply small for her age.

But sometimes slow growth has a cause. That’s why the parents of 4-year-old Avery Hawker – Jayme and Joe Hawker of Joliet – are hosting the “MAGIC Foundation RSS Fundraiser: Awareness for Avery” on Sept. 18 at the Joliet Park District.

The Hawkers want to raise awareness of growth disorders, such as Russell-Silver syndrome, which a geneticist diagnosed in Avery two years ago, Jayme said. They also want to raise funds for The MAGIC Foundation, which supports families whose children are affected by certain endocrine conditions, including some growth disorders.

Through the foundation, Jayme said, the family has gained knowledge, support and connections with other families dealing with similar conditions.

“Because it’s so rare, you don’t readily run into people with it,” Jayme said of RSS. “You’ve got to research online and find families across the United States.”

“She’s had gross motor delays,” Jayme said. “She’s not able to jump and she can’t walk long distances.”

Avery’s growth has been slow her

entire life. Jayme said Avery had her tonsils and adenoids removed in her first year – because she couldn’t breathe and eat at the same time – and having these surgeries was considered as possible cause for her slow growth.

But when Avery was still lagging by her first birthday, the family explored other causes. They changed pediatricians and saw several specialists. Eventually, Avery was referred to a geneticist.

Although RSS is genetic, it doesn’t necessary mean it’s inherited, Jayme said. Her 6-year-old daughter Mady Hawker’s growth is normal and the odds are Avery won’t pass RSS to her children, Jayme said.

30 Explaining therapy may help husband seek it Dear Dr. K: I’m convinced my husband is depressed, but he refuses to seek help.

What can I say to convince him he could benefit from therapy?

Dear Reader: Most men don’t like to ask for help or to talk about their feelings. That’s not going to be easy for your husband. However, doing nothing could make it harder for him. If he is suffering from depression and doesn’t get help, it could threaten everything important in his life, starting with family, friends and work.

Left unchecked, the symptoms of depression can make a person miserable.

The sadness, lack of energy, loss of interest in sex, difficulty thinking and constant feeling of stress can cause serious problems at home and at work. They even might lead to destructive behavior such as alcohol or drug dependence.

Your husband likely recognizes these negative feelings and changes. But he might not know the root cause, or if he does, what he can do about it. You gently need to help him recognize he is unhappy, and it is causing tensions at home and at work (assuming that’s true). And you need to assure him help is available, and what that involves.

You might explain to him, generally speaking, a therapist will help establish treatment goals and then outline a strategy to meet them. This may include a combination of therapy during regular sessions and “homework” in between

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff visits. After a series of initial treatment sessions, your husband might return periodically for “booster” visits to prevent a future relapse.

If you’re able to convince your husband to try therapy, he’ll need to find a therapist. A primary care physician is a good place to start. Your husband can speak with his PCP about his situation, how he feels and his symptoms. The doctor can recommend therapists who can help.

If your husband would prefer not to go through his PCP, there are other resources. Many employee health care plans offer confidential help lines where you can ask questions and find therapists in your network. Another source is the National Alliance on Mental Illness Helpline (800950-6264).

Finally, once you get him started, encourage your husband to stick with therapy, even if he does not feel a strong connection with the first therapist he tries. Advise him to try someone else and not get discouraged.

it possible people can just fall out of love with each other? We have been married for 21 years and have three kids who are older.

Over the past five years, my wife and I have stopped communicating. We don’t do anything together and have little desire to be with each other anymore. We are good parents, but as far as being husband and wife, we pretty much have neglected each other emotionally and physically. Neither of us has strayed.

We haven’t been to a marriage counselor because I just don’t love my wife anymore, and I’m not saying this to be mean. It’s just how I feel. We have failed each other miserably as husband and wife, and she deserves better. She has been a great mom to our three kids, and I would never take that away from her.

Last Saturday, I gave a deal in which third hand had to play deceptively to mislead declarer about honor-card locations. Here is the theme again, from the World Youth Teams Championships in Italy last month.

South’s three-spade cue-bid asked partner to bid three no-trump with a spade stopper. North’s double was card-showing.

At every other table where diamonds were trumps, East either played the spade ace and king at the first two tricks, or won with the spade king and shifted to a club.

Each declarer realized that if East had the spade ace and king, he or she could not also have the diamond king. So they all cashed the diamond ace and dropped West’s king.

Only Kirstyn Fuller from Australia anticipated this future. To change it, she won trick one with the spade ace and immediately switched to the club nine. Now the declarer thought that Jessica Brake (West) had the spade king. This made it likely that East had the diamond king, and as long as West was not void in trumps, the diamond seven would be a second dummy entry.

South won with her club ace, cashed the heart ace, played a heart to dummy’s king, and returned a low diamond to her queen.

If that had held the trick and both opponents had followed suit, declarer would have cashed the diamond ace, led a diamond to dummy’s seven, and hoped to discard her remaining clubs on the hearts. However, the finesse lost. West then cashed her club king and gave her partner a club ruff for down three. That was timely anticipation by Fuller.
