Joliet council takes action to preserve historic Dougall home

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The historic home of Dr. William Dougall now has two interested buyers who could save the structure from the wrecking ball.

The City Council on Tuesday approved a purchase of the 19th-century house at 209 Union St. for the purpose of historic preservation.

The city planned previously to demolish the decrepit building that was the home of a Civil War commander of African-American troops fighting for the Union.

Now the city is negotiating with a private party to turn over the house for the sake of preservation.

Make that two private parties.

Raychel Wesley spoke to the council before the vote and expressed concern that she and her husband, John, would not have an opportunity to buy the house because it would be turned over to a city employee also interested in the house.

“We have lived in the community where the property is located for the past

13 years,” Wesley told the council.

Wesley said she and her husband are “just as qualified if not more so” as the city employee who also is interested in the house.

City Planner Barb Newberg, who also is liaison to the Joliet Historic Preservation Commission, said previously that she was negotiating to buy the house when it was not apparent anyone else would make a commitment to rehab the property.

The commission last month voted against a certificate of appropriateness that would have been a green light for the city to demolish the house. But the city had already slowed down the demolition plan because of growing concerns about losing the house.

“We are ready, willing and able to do the

restoration,” Wesley said. “We are requesting the opportunity to restore this jewel of the community to its former glory.”

Wesley was critical of the possibility of turning the property over to Newberg, saying it “is not an arm’s length transaction.”

City Manager Jim Hock said the council vote only authorized the city to buy the house and did not determine who its future owner would be.

“It’s just to buy the property, and we’d be more than happy to meet with the parties to discuss the conveyance,” Hock said.

The Wesleys formerly operated a downtown restaurant named the Red Goose Bakery.

The Dougall home was included among three properties approved for acquisition by the council. The others are at 263 Wilson Ave. and 817 Sherman St., which were acquired for demolition.

The total price for the three properties, according to a council memo, is $1,943. The Dougall House already had been passed up at a tax auction. Its owner, a neighboring church, has not been able to pay the taxes or maintain the house.

D-210 projects surplus in operating budget

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Lincoln-Way District 210 officials are projecting in the fiscal 2017 operating budget about $86 million in revenue and $84 million in expenses, with a surplus of about $2 million.

District officials held a public hearing on the budget Tuesday. Superintendent Scott Tingley said he expects the district to have $5 million in savings this fiscal year.

He said most of the savings were made from personnel. In March, the board approved the dismissal of more than 30 staff members, and district officials said the cuts were part of the plan to close North High School.

North was closed as part of a deficit reduction plan.

“It took awhile to get in here. It will take awhile to get out,” Tingley said.

The fiscal 2017 budget projects $40 million in new construction and a Consumer Price Index of 0.7 percent. Tingley has said the figure for new construction is a conservative estimate.

According to Tingley’s budget presentation, the Illinois State Board of Education has not officially released the amount the district will receive in general state aid. The fiscal 2017 budget assumes that amount will be $5.2 million.

The district’s auditor Wermer, Rogers, Doran & Ruzon have made substantial progress on the annual audit, said Kelly Luzzo, the district’s finance director, at Tuesday’s Finance and Building Committee.

Luzzo said she’s in the process of doing an analysis of all of the district’s student activity accounts, a process that will be time consuming and take a couple of months.

“I’m really looking line by line by line – seeing what each of our accounts are, what they’re used for,” she said.

She also gave an update on the refunds for the driver education fees during the 2010-11 school year. She said 1,550 applications have been processed and checks are slated to be sent out Friday.

In July, district officials said they would have to refund families $321,635 because they were improperly charged $350 for driver education in the 2010-11 school year.

The refund is in addition to the $377,411 that the district owed families as a result of improperly charged driver education fees for the 2015-16 school year.

Stateville union pickets; employees say staffing is down and assaults are up

bokon@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – Stateville Correctional Center employees lined a stretch of Route 53 outside the prison Tuesday afternoon to send a message to passersby and anyone willing to listen.

Prison assaults are on the rise and staffing is down, said correctional officers and other union members taking part in the information picket.

That, along with a pay freeze and inadequate training, combine to make life tough inside the big house for more than just the inmates, they said.

“Basically, it’s just getting worse,” said Stephen Williams, a correctional officer with 21 years of experience.

“We’re at an all-time low in staff. We don’t have enough officers to run this place. We’re just doing the best we can.”

The union listed five assaults at Stateville, including one in which an inmate wielding a sock full of batteries attacked two officers, as signs of trouble at the prison.

The informational picket was called amid the ongoing state budget crisis and a contract standoff between Gov. Bruce Rauner and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which represents state workers, including those at Stateville.

Real-world engineering experience ExxonMobil pairing with nonprofit in Joliet high schools

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Students at Joliet West and Central high schools are learning how to be engineers through a partnership between the schools, a nonprofit organization and ExxonMobil.

Students in the Introduction to Engineering and Principles of Engineering classes at both campuses learn the basics of engineering, careers in engineering, robotics, coding and more through the Project Lead the Way program.

The curriculum in the classes is designed to help increase the skills students need to do engineering in the real world, said Erin Wagner, a West physics teacher.

“The curriculum was developed by engineers, so it’s things they feel are necessary for students to be able to do,” Wagner said.

Wagner, who teaches Introduction to Engineering, is one of several teachers

at the campuses who is certified as an instructor by Project Lead the Way, a nonprofit that works with more than 9,000 schools nationwide to provide students and teachers with knowledge and skills needed for career success.

“We partner with schools and support them to implement Project Lead the Way programs, and we provide all the curriculum and the teachers’ professional development to ensure teachers have the resources and tools they need,” said Jennifer Cahill, Project Lead the Way spokeswoman.

Wagner described the training as difficult and rigorous but by far the best she’s received. The program was introduced at Central and West last year.

Other teachers who are certified by Project Lead the Way include Tim Gonzales, Chris McGuffey, Jennifer Birkner and Eric Jern, according to Joliet Township High School District 204.

The district also partnered with ExxonMobil – through the Be An Engineer

program – to have the company’s engineers participate in classroom activities and provide insight, according to a district news release.

“They gave [the students] feedback and asked them critical questions,” Wagner said.

This school year, ExxonMobil donated Be An Engineer T-shirts, notepads and stickers to all students who are part of Project Lead the Way, district officials said.

Jern, a Central physics teacher who teaches Principles of Engineering, said in his class students learn about mechanism, solving problems through machines, programming and energy production.

He said it’s a hands-on, problem-based class.

“It really does show them the principles of engineering,” Jern said.

Wagner said in her class the students do instant challenges, where students have to design something such as an air-

plane, test it and redesign if needed. She said the students go through the engineering process, which includes brainstorming, coming up with solutions and building a prototype.

She said each engineering class becomes more rigorous for the students.

“It’s like a snowball, I’d say, it just keeps building with each unit,” she said.

Last school year, the district offered only Introduction to Engineering and this year Principles of Engineering was added, she said. Next year, she said the teachers are looking to add a computer-integrated manufacturing class, especially since manufacturing is big in the Joliet area.

Cahill said that through Project Lead the Way, students are solving relevant, real-world challenges so they understand why they need to learn math and science.

“It’s a hands-on activity and project-based approach to learning,” she said.

Prosecutors want other crimes as evidence in murder retrial

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Prosecutors want jurors to hear that a man acting as his own attorney for his second murder trial tried hiring someone to kill a witness before the first one.

Martin Elvis Gomez, 31, is scheduled to face trial later this month for the May 10, 2007, slaying of Joseph N. Salamie on his 10-acre farm on South Harlem Avenue, just north of Peotone Road, in Peotone Township. Gomez, who had once lived in a trailer on the farm, Martin Elvis allegedly stabbed his for- Gomez mer landlord 111 times, slit his throat and stole $1,200.

Gomez was convicted of murder in 2011, but an appellate court decided he had not been given the proper admonishments about representing himself, which he did for his first trial, and ordered a new trial. He’s also serving a separate 19-year prison sentence for trying to hire a gang member to kill an ex-girlfriend who testified against him.

Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Colleen Griffin said Jessica Gustafson will testify she saw Gomez “covered in blood” after the slaying and she was with him to spend the blood-cov-

ered money he’d taken.

“In December 2007, Gomez spoke with the former jail inmate who then went to the authorities and was put on a wire,” Griffin told Judge Carmen Goodman. “In January 2008, there was a conversation where Gomez made statements on this crime and the solicitation.”

Gustafson initially told investigators Gomez was not involved in the slaying, but changed her story after police warned her about the attempts to hire a hit man. According to Griffin, Gustafson said she first lied to police because Gomez had told her he’d killed Salamie in self-defense.

“Somebody who is attempting to murder the main witness against him ... shows evidence of guilt,” Griffin said.

Goodman said Tuesday that prosecutors need to specify the exact time frame of other crimes witnesses could be asked about so they don’t violate Gomez’s Sixth Amendment right to confront witnesses against him. The judge reminded Gomez he’s “at a disadvantage” without an experienced lawyer to review the prosecutors’ requests.

Will County Assistant Public Defender Jason Strzelecki has been assigned to observe the case, should Gomez change his mind about representing himself, but Gomez repeated Tuesday that he does not want an attorney.

LOCAL BRIEF Plainfield McDonald’s burglarized, money taken

PLAINFIELD – The McDonald’s at Route 59 and Renwick Road in Plainfield was burglarized early Tuesday.

Plainfield Police Department Sgt. Mike Fisher said crews arrived for the morning shift about 4 a.m. to find a door had been pried open and believed someone had

gone inside. Officers determined the same and went inside to find the office had been ransacked.

“Several thousand dollars were missing from the safe,” Fisher noted.

Evidence technicians were called to process the scene before the restaurant opened for business Tuesday.

Joliet police seeking Citgo robbery suspect

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Police are asking for the public’s help to find one of the suspects in a gas station robbery last week, during which a clerk was shot with an assault rifle.

About 4:15 a.m.

Sept. 1, two men entered Citgo, 609 Ruby Deondre St., Joliet, and at- L. Woods tempted to shoot the lock on the bullet-resistant booth the attendant was inside. The gunfire penetrated the booth’s glass and struck the clerk’s finger, Joliet Depu-

ty Police Chief Al Roechner said. The clerk received medical treatment at a hospital.

Roechner said evidence at the scene led police to identify Deondre L. Woods, 27, of Joliet, as a suspect.

According to Will County Jail records, Woods was arrested on domestic battery charges in 2012 by Plainfield police. He was also charged with marijuana possession in 2013.

No injuries in Plainfield house fire on Labor Day The HERALD–NEWS PLAINFIELD – There were no injuries in a Labor Day house fire in Plainfield, according to a news release from the Plainfield Fire Protection District.

At 2:43 p.m. Monday, a resident of the home in the 24000 block of Golden Sunset Drive smelled something burning, found the exterior of the house to be on fire and called 911, the news release stated. All four people who were home at the time escaped uninjured.

Fire crews arrived on scene at 2:47 p.m. and immediately upgraded the response to a “full still,” according to the news release, bringing additional manpower and equipment to aid in fighting the fire and also bringing

neighboring fire crews to Plainfield for station coverage in the event of additional calls.

The fire was brought under control by 2:54 p.m., the news release stated.

Crews were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the interior of the home.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Plainfield fire district, according to the news release.

Assistance and coverage during the fire was provided by the Oswego Fire Protection District, Naperville Fire Department, Bolingbrook Fire Department, Troy Fire Protection District, Lockport Fire Protection District and Aurora Township Fire Protection District.

Morris Building and Loan to be under new ownership

fsarver@shawmedia.com MORRIS – First Secure Community Bank has announced it will acquire Morris Building and Loan.

The Sugar Grove-based company plans to acquire the Morris banking office of The State Bank Group, pending approval from regulatory agencies that is expected to be completed fourth quarter 2016, according to a news release from First Secure.

The sale is in line with First Secure’s plans to expand operations into the far west and southwest suburbs. Joliet businessman and First Secure Chairman Jay Bergman said that in the first time in quite some time, Morris Building and Loan will be locally owned and operated.

“This is going to be something that is owned and managed locally,” Bergman said.

Bergman said he lives in Joliet but has a farm in the Morris-Wilmington area. He said he’s very familiar with Morris, and loves the area and its residents.

First Secure has about $180 million

in assets and has facilities in Sugar Grove and Aurora, opening fall 2016, according to the news release. It is one of several banks owned by Bergman.

The bank specializes in consumer and commercial banking services.

The sale allows The State Bank Group to focus its attention on its recent acquisition of Harvard Savings Bank, of which Morris Building and Loan was part, and its overall presence in McHenry County, which now includes eight banking locations.

Wonder Bancorp is the holding company of The State Bank Group, which has locations in Wonder Lake, Johnsburg, Spring Grove, Lakemoor and Hebron.

State Bank Group President Stephen Mitchell stated in a news release that the company is pleased to announce its agreement with First Secure Community Bank.

“We are confident the Morris branch location will continue to thrive under First Secure’s management and that the facility will continue to provide a quality community banking platform for the citizens and businesses of Morris and its surrounding areas,” Mitchell stated.

Joliet Unity Movement holds annual celebration The HERALD–NEWS JOLIET – The Joliet Unity Movement last month held its third annual 815 Youth Weekend – an event that celebrates youths and heroes in the community.

The weekend event kicked off Aug. 12 with the 815 awards gala where Joliet Unity Movement staff and guests were honored, according to a news release.

The event continued Aug. 13 with a State of the Neighborhood address to discuss community improvement and concluded Aug. 14 with an 815 Youth Day event in Nowell Park.

talked about the state of policing across the country and how that reflects here locally,” the news release stated. “The group agreed followup meetings in the form of community conversations and town hall meetings were needed to grow the dialogue into positive change in the area.”

At the 815 Youth Day, youths participated in a 3-on-3 basketball tournament.

Team Flint was the championship winner and Team Latray was the runnerup.

United in Excellence performed a dance routine while giving a motivating mes-

sage to youths and families.

Winners of a talent show and essay contest were also announced.

The winners of the Reggier Loc Outstanding Talent Award were Jamaya McHerron and Kyla Barrentine.

The winners of the “How I Would Improve My Community” essay contest were Carmen Holman, Javonte Woods and Ke’Asha Smith; each was awarded $150.

Portwood, president of AFSCME Local 1866, which represents Stateville’s officers.

“I called it because I’m tired of the fact that we don’t have a segregation unit at our facility,” Portwood said.

“We’ve got guys that should be in segregated cells, and we don’t have any room for them.”

Portwood said inmates who should be in isolation are not, which creates dangers for both correctional officers and other inmates.

The problems have been aggravated by new rules requiring special treatment for inmates diagnosed with mental illnesses, he said.

Portwood said officers received 16 hours of training over two days for treatment of inmates who have been designated as severely mentally ill, and it’s just not enough.

“You’re supposed to change the way you do the job day in and day out with two days of training,” Portwood said.

“We just feel that there should be more training.”

The Illinois Department of Corrections did not immediately respond Tuesday to a request for comment on the informational picket and the union’s statement that assaults in the prison system are on the rise.

OBITUARIES MARY M. BARRETT

Born: May 21, 1919; in Coal City Died: Sept. 1, 2016; in San Jose, CA Mary M. Barrett, age 97, of Campbell, CA, and formerly of Coal City, passed away Sept. 1, 2016, in San Jose, CA. Born May 21, 1919, in Coal City, Mary was a daughter of Charles and Jennie Bonino Jachino Redmond. She was raised in Coal City; graduated class salutatorian of Coal City High School; attended Northern Illinois University, and earned her certificate in piano at the Joliet Musical College. In 1946, Mary married Wendell B. Barrett in Coal City. As a wife and mother, Mary managed the childhood personal assistance for her disabled daughter, Anne, who now is a Kellogg Fellow and retired university professor and dean of science.

Mary taught piano in Coal City for several years and her employment went on to entail working as a secretary in the Department of Pathology at St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet (1970-1972); secretary at DeMert & Dougherty in Coal City (1972-1973); secretary to the principal and secretary to the counselor at Coal City High School (1973-1984); forms analyst at CUNA (Credit Union National Association) in Madison, Wisconsin (1984-1986); and working in retail as a sales associate for Marshall Field’s in Joliet and later Marga’s Boutique in Santa Rosa, California (1986-2000).

Mary was a member of Assumption Catholic Church in Coal City most of her life. Most recently since 2004, she belonged to St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in San Jose, CA, and she was active with the San Jose Widow and Widowers Group. Mary enjoyed playing the piano, gardening, reading mysteries and going to lunch, and will be remembered for rescuing and caring for adopted cats.

Survivors include her daughter and son-inlaw, Anne Louise and David K. Swanson of Campbell, CA; niece, Mary Janice (Jachino) Jackson of Cumming, GA; nephew, Burdett “Bud” (Carolyn) Barrett of Rye, NH; grandnieces, Cyndi of New Hampshire and Diane of Oregon; niece, Cynthia Barrett Faulhaber of Florida; grandniece, Greta; grandnephew, Karl; grandniece, Nancy Joan (William) Lyday of Coal City; grandnephews, Paul (Lynn) Jackson and Todd Jackson, both of Cumming, GA; and several great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews, as well as many loyal friends in Coal City, Campbell and San Jose.

Mary was preceded by her parents; husband, Wendell Barrett; brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Frances Jachino, Paul and Jessie Redmond; and brother-in-law, Everett (Millie) Barrett; niece, Joan (Frank) Greene; and several beloved rescued cats, including GrayBoy and Snowball.

The family will receive friends at St. Rose Catholic Church, 604 S. Kankakee St. in Wilmington on Friday, Sept. 9, 2016, from 9 a.m. until time of funeral service 11 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated with Rev. Robert Noesen from Assumption Parish

in Coal City officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Wilmington, where Mary will be laid to rest with her late husband, Wendell.

Born in Riga, Latvia. Residing in Joliet most of his life. Graduate of Plano High School and Joliet Junior College. Retired from Olin (Blockson) Chemical as a lab technician. He was a devoted family man and an avid outdoorsman.

He had a passion for woodcarving, the North Woods and Chicago Blackhawks hockey.

Survived by his loving wife, Velta (nee Jaunzems) Kalejs of Joliet; his daughter, Karen Kalejs of West Chicago; his son, Mark (Renee) Kalejs of Naperville; and two granddaughters, Haley and Alyssa Kalejs.

Preceded by his daughter, Kris Gifford

She formerly worked at Royal Willow Nursing Home in Wilmington, Allient Tech in Joliet and waitressed in her younger years.

She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening. Mary’s favorite holiday was Halloween.

She loved decorating for it and also helped the Wilmington Lions Club with their spook hike.

Surviving are her husband, Ronald, whom she married Sept. 28, 1974, in Wilmington; one daughter, Cheryl Lynn Landers of Wilmington; two sons, Jamison Michael Landers and Jeffery Wayne Landers, both of Wilmington; and one brother, Emil Lee (Carman) Zalud of Essex.

Irene “Hope” Button Viscum Kenney (nee Norton), age 89, of Pinehurst, NC, passed away at her home on Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2016.

Hope is survived by her loving children, Susan (Donald) Nugent of Manhattan and Gary (Teresa) Button; daughter-in-law, Roxann Button of Lawrenceville, GA; eight grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Kenney is also survived by 10 stepchildren; 21 stepgrandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Hope was the sister of Edward (Phyllis) Norton and Joy (William) Blogg; and sister-in-law of Virginia Norton and Mabel Ann Plese.

Preceded in death by her husbands, Raymond Porter Button (1965), John Viscum (2003) and Thomas Kenney (2015); son, Edward (Roxann) Button; parents, Edward and Myrtle (Carlock) Norton; siblings, Ronald (Virginia) Norton and Muriel “Fluffy” Strassenburg; and great-granddaughters, Eva and Grace Duffus.

Born in Lockport on May 2, 1927, Mrs. Kenney was a graduate of Lockport Township High School, class of 1945. After graduation she attended Bloomington – Normal College (now Illinois State University) and also the College of St. Francis in Joliet.

Hope met, and later married, Raymond P. Button Jr. while attending Bloomington – Normal. Hope was an elementary school teacher and librarian for Lockport School District 92 until her retirement. After Raymond’s passing in 1965, she would continue to teach while raising a family. In 1977, Hope would marry John Viscum and move to Joliet. John Viscum passed away in 2003. Hope married Thomas Kenney, also a 1945 graduate of Lockport High School and moved to Pinehurst, NC, in 2005.

Hope and her family spent their summers at the Joliet Beach Club and was an active member of Christ Church in Joliet. She was a volunteer at Silver Cross Hospital and Provena St. Joseph Hospital. After moving to Pinehurst, NC, Hope volunteered at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.

Visitation and Mass will take place on Friday, Sept. 16, 2016, at St. Patrick Church of Wilton Center, 14936 W. Wilmington-Peotone Road, Manhattan.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Thirteen people were shot to death over the Labor Day weekend in Chicago, making it the deadliest holiday weekend of one of the deadliest summers the city has experienced in decades.

The police department also said the 13 were among 43 people who were shot over the weekend. Among those was a pregnant woman who delivered a nearly full-term baby after she was shot in the abdomen. The woman, whom police said was not the intended target, was listed in critical condition Tuesday. The infant’s condition has not

been released.

The holiday weekend slayings come amid a dramatic spike in homicides.

The department also said the weekend slayings pushed to 488 the total of slayings for the year – surpassing the 481 homicides that the police department said were recorded for all of last year. Nearly 230 homicides occurred in June, July and August – during which the city had 90 homicides, making it the deadliest single month in Chicago since June 1996.

Last week, the police department said it had officially increased the total of 2015 homicides to 481 from 473.

The number of shootings and homicides over the Labor Day weekend were both higher than the Memorial Day and July 4 weekends and it was the last of the summer holidays before the school year started Tuesday. Police have said the reasons for the increase in homicides are tied to the easy availability of guns and gang violence. And Superintendent Eddie Johnson, as he has done in the past, said

that much of the gun violence is the result of lax gun laws in Illinois that allow those arrested on gun charges to be released from jail far sooner than in other states.

“I’m frustrated ... that despite these weekends, we still see repeat offenders get back out on the street far too soon,” Johnson told reporters Tuesday.

Johnson, referring to reports that Chicago had more homicides than the combined total of the larger cities of New York and Los Angeles in August, said that those cities benefit from tougher gun laws.

“If we had the gun laws they have, we’d see violent crime cut in half,” he said.

Catholic health system drops saint names from hospitals

MISHAWAKA, Ind. – A large Catholic health system is dropping saint names from its hospitals to create a more unified identity.

Franciscan Alliance treats more than 1.3 million patients in Illinois, Indiana and Michigan. It’s changing its name to Franciscan Health. The Indiana-based organization announced Tuesday that it will rename 12 of its 14 hospitals.

The decision means Franciscan St. Francis Health in Indianapolis will become Franciscan Health Indianapolis. Franciscan St. James Health in Chicago Heights, Illinois, will become Franciscan Health Chicago

Lincoln museum to host ‘Pets in the White House’ event

SPRINGFIELD – The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum is hosting an event dedicated to teaching the public about past presidential pets.

The event gives the public the chance to learn about little-known pets, such as Lincoln’s two goats, named Nanny and Nanko, and other presidential companions such as mockingbirds and possums.

The second annual “Pets in the White House” event Sept. 17 in Springfield will feature a pet parade.

Father F. Lee Ryan, 83, of Watseka, passed away on Friday, Sept. 2, 2016.

He was born on Aug. 14, 1933, in Kinsman, the son of Leo Ryan and Hildegard (Coughlin) Ryan.

Mr. Ryan was in the U.S. Army.

After completing his time in the Army he attended U of I, transferring over to Conception Seminary Conception Missouri, where he received his Master of Theology.

He was ordained a priest on May 25, 1968. He was a priest at St. Edmunds Catholic Church in Watseka for over 20 years. He was also a

chaplin and chaplin emeritus for the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed gardening and traveling.

Surviving Father F. Lee Ryan is one brother, Maurice and Sue Ryan of Palm Harbor, FL; one sister, Leona Myers of Dwight; two nieces and nephews; Jane and Steve Fritsch, Michael and Kelly Myers, Kelly and Jeff Heckman and Kevin and Carrie Ryan.

He is also preceded in death by both his parents; and one brother-in-law, Richard “Dick” Myers.

Candidates trade barbs over national security The ASSOCIATED PRESS TAMPA, Fla. – Hillary Clinton accused Donald Trump of insulting America’s veterans and pressing dangerous military plans around the globe on Tuesday, seeking to undercut his appeal to service families in Southern voting battlegrounds. He was questioned by retired Gen. Michael Flynn, the former director of the Defense Intelligence Agency who is a strong supporter.

“We are going to solve the ISIS problem,” Trump said.

“But we have to get back to building our country, because our country is going to hell.”

Trump promised to fix problems at the Veterans Administration, which has grappled with patient care mismanagement during the Obama administration. Until those problems are resolved, he said he would allow veterans to seek treatment at private doctors or hospitals free of charge.

“Your government is going to pay your bill,” he pledged.

Clinton’s message was amplified by her running mate, Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, who promoted his own foreign policy credentials in a speech in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Kaine said Trump is misleading voters on his foreign policy views, asserting he was against invading Iraq despite statements to several news outlets at the time indicating otherwise.

Kaine, who noted his own son’s service in the Marine Corps, is a member of both the Senate Armed Services and Foreign Relations committees.

Meanwhile, Clinton’s campaign released a new television ad titled, “Sacrifice,” that shows military veterans watching some of the New York businessman’s more provocative statements.

Obama pledges U.S. help for Laos Declares ‘obligation’ to clear unexploded bombs The ASSOCIATED PRESS VIENTIANE, Laos – Declaring a “moral obligation” to heal the wounds of a secret war, President Barack Obama on Tuesday pledged help to clear away the 80 million unexploded bombs the U.S. dropped on Laos a generation ago – more than 10 for every one of the country’s 7 million people.

Half a century ago, the United States turned Laos into history’s most heavily bombed country, raining down some 2 million tons of ordnance in a covert, nine-year chapter of the Vietnam War. Obama the first president to set foot in Laos while in office, lamented that many Americans remain unaware of the “painful legacy” left behind by a bombardment that claims lives and limbs to this day.

“The remnants of war continue to shatter lives here in Laos,” Obama said before an audience of students, businessmen and orange-robed Buddhist monks who held up cellphones to snap photos of the American pres-

To that end, Obama announced the U.S. would double its spending on bomb-clearing efforts to $90 million over three years – a relatively small

sum for the U.S. but a significant investment for a small country in one of the poorer corners of the world.

Obama plans to put a human face on the issue when he meets Wednesday in Vientiane with survivors of bombs that America dropped.

The president did not come to apologize. Instead, he called the conflict a reminder that “whatever the cause, whatever our intentions, war inflicts a terrible toll – especially on innocent men, women and children.”

Thanks to global cleanup efforts, casualties from tennis ball-sized “bombies” that still litter the Laotian countryside have plummeted from hundreds to dozens per year. But aid groups say far more help is needed. Of all the provinces in landlocked Laos, only one has a comprehensive system to care for bomb survivors.

“We’re incredibly proud of the progress the sector has made over the last five years in terms of the decline in casualties and new victims,” said Channapha Khamvongsa of the nonprofit Legacies of War. “But we are concerned about the upwards of 15,000 survivors around the country that are still in need of support.”

The $90 million to clean up bombs joins an additional $100 million the U.S. has committed in the past 20 years. The Lao government, meanwhile, said it will boost efforts to recover remains and account for Americans missing since the war.



Carlson settles lawsuit against Ailes NEW YORK – Former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson settled her sexual harassment lawsuit against Roger Ailes for a reported $20 million and a public apology Tuesday, ending the case that triggered the downfall of the cable channel’s chief executive.

Carlson alleged in a lawsuit filed two months ago that she was demoted and let go at Fox because she rejected Ailes’ sexual advances and complained about workplace harassment.

In a statement, Fox Gretchen parent company 21st Carlson Century Fox said: “We regret and apologize for the fact that Gretchen was not treated with the respect and dignity that she and all of our colleagues deserve.”

Carlson was paid Roger Ailes $20 million, according to a person familiar with the settlement who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the terms were confidential. Ailes did not pay any of the settlement, said his lawyer, Susan Estrich.

Carlson said she is ready to move on to the next chapter in her life and promised to work to help women in the workplace. She thanked “all the brave women” who came forward to tell their own stories and others who supported her.

“All women deserve a dignified and respectful workplace,” she said.

Ailes, 76, denied Carlson’s allegations when the lawsuit was filed. He had no comment Tuesday.

Also Tuesday, Fox News announced the surprise departure of Greta Van Susteren from a nighttime lineup that has been one of the most successful and stable in cable news.

Van Susteren, who would have marked 15 years with the network in January, said on Facebook that Fox “has not felt like home to me for a few years.” She did not elaborate. She has been temporarily replaced by Brit Hume.

Van Susteren was among the Fox employees who came forward to

speak on Ailes’ behalf after Carlson’s lawsuit. She later said she wasn’t trying to defend him, merely to say she hadn’t experienced harassment or knew anybody who had.

Carlson, a former Miss America, worked for several years on the “Fox & Friends” morning show, then was switched to a less-visible afternoon time slot in 2013. She was told in June that her contract would not be renewed.

Carlson alleged that Ailes told her in a meeting, “You and I should have had a sexual relationship a long time ago.” She said he ogled her, repeatedly commented about her legs and urged her to wear clothes that enhanced her figure.

New York magazine reported last week that Carlson began taking her iPhone into meetings with Ailes in 2014 and secretly recording their conversations.

Carlson’s case led 21st Century Fox to launch its own investigation, and other women came forward with stories of being sexually harassed by Ailes, including Fox News star Megyn Kelly. A few women told their stories publicly.

Two weeks after Carlson sued, Ailes was gone, reportedly with a $40 million payout. He is said to be informally advising Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

At least two other women who spoke to investigators have reached financial settlements with 21st Century Fox in return for a promise not to sue, according to the person familiar with the investigation.

Another former Fox personality, Andrea Tantaros, has filed a harassment lawsuit against the network.

Fox is fighting that case and has described Tantaros as an “opportunist” in court papers.

Carl Tobias, a professor at the University of Richmond School of Law, said the Carlson case could have a significant effect on the workplace as a deterrent against harassment and would make employers take such complaints from employees more seriously.

Ailes was hired by Rupert Murdoch to create Fox News from scratch in 1996. He built it into a dominant news network and a force in Republican politics.

Actions imply Rauner wants campaign issue more than redistricting solution Whenever you see a statement from the Democratic Party of Illinois, you can feel supremely confident that House Speaker Michael Madigan, the party’s longtime chairman, approves of the sentiment.

And the same goes for the Illinois Republican Party and Gov. Bruce Rauner, who accounts for 95 percent of the party’s total fundraising since Jan. 1.

No way will that party deliberately say anything that is in any way contrary to the governor’s wishes.

Last week, not long after former Gov. Pat Quinn announced he would put forth his own redistricting reform plan, the Illinois Republican Party sent out a blistering news release denouncing Quinn, without even waiting to hear what he said: “Pat Quinn is the very reason Illinois doesn’t already have fair maps,” a party spokesman was quoted as saying.

“In 2011, Quinn signed into law the gerrymandered district lines we have today.

Instead of standing up for reform when he was in charge of the state, Quinn worked with Mike Madigan to rig the political system in their favor. We don’t need Pat Quinn to fix Pat Quinn’s map.”

First of all, the Republicans do make a valid point. Quinn did indeed sign the current map into law.

But Rauner has been spending time traveling the state and appearing on Chicago TV saying he wants redistricting reform enacted into law. If he was really serious about that goal, wouldn’t he be embracing – or, at least, not harshly denigrating – all comers, no matter what their history or party affiliation, or at least wait until he hears them out?

The remap reform issue has been completely weaponized against the Democrats in this year’s campaign. That’s mainly the Democrats’ own fault. They could’ve passed their own plan this year – or last year, or whenever – but chose not to.

And, it turns out, after reading Quinn’s plan, it may not be all that great.

Illinois Supreme Court justices would appoint 11 members to a special redistricting commission and approval of a new map would require seven of those 11 votes. But what happens if they can’t come to an agreement? The proposal is silent, and Quinn’s spokesman didn’t even respond when I asked that question.

Quinn’s proposal also declares that the new commission would have no more than six members from any one political party. The Republicans easily can see

VIEWS Rich Miller right through that one. The Democratic majority on the court could appoint six Democrats and any number of Democratic sympathizers who can be credibly labeled as “independents.” Quinn did this very thing himself when he was governor.

But the Republican Party and Rauner didn’t know about these shortcomings when they sent out that news release the day before Quinn’s unveiling. It was a purely knee-jerk, partisan reaction.

And it undermined the governor’s public claims that he’s searching for a bipartisan solution to this mess.

Again, the governor, his party apparatchiks and his legislative candidates are not wrong to blame Madigan, Senate President John Cullerton or rank-andfile Democrats for the lack of action on redistricting reform this year. Have at it.

You use what works in campaigns, and this works.

Indeed, Republican legislative candidates have been doing their very best to kick up as much dust as possible since the redistricting opinion was handed down. The common thread, of course, is Madigan.

“Mike Madigan and the career politicians in Springfield have made a mess of our state, and it is going to take fair maps and term limits to clean it up,” said Tony McCombie, the GOP challenger to Rep. Mike Smiddy, D-Hillsdale. Hers was one of countless statements I’ve seen from Republican candidates throughout the state, and the governor was in her district’s main media market the same day to amplify his party’s case against the ruling.

But knocking down a proposal before it even gets out of the gate because of the sponsor is wrong and implies that no idea proposed by any Democrat with the slightest bit of taint on this topic will ever be acceptable in the least. And that more than implies that the governor wants a campaign issue far more than he wants an actual solution – which is exactly what the Democrats have suspected from the very beginning.

U. of Chicago takes stand on free speech It shouldn’t qualify as news when a university says it strives to be an intellectually unsafe space that encourages unrestricted discussion. Yet the current climate on American campuses virtually guaranteed that a letter from the University of Chicago’s dean of students to the incoming class of 2020 would generate controversy.

“Our commitment to academic freedom,” reads the letter, revealed last week, “means that we do not support so-called ‘trigger warnings,’ we do not cancel invited speakers because their topics might prove controversial, and we do not condone the creation of intellectual ‘safe spaces’ where individuals can retreat from ideas and perspectives at odds with their own.”

Admirable sentiments all, yet the backlash was swift – including from the university itself, which issued a qualifying statement pointing out that professors maintain discretion in advising students about “difficult material,” while emphasizing that the college seeks to maintain “welcoming venues” for discussion. It is certainly true that professors have the right to say what they want in class, and alerting students to content that may be personally painful needn’t be more than a simple expression of empathy.

At the same time, the classroom belongs to the university, not the professor. And while empathy

is an essential human quality, attempts to institutionalize it can be ruinous. Once rules are established, they acquire logic and momentum of their own, leading to ever more rules erected to honor ever more sensitivities. Honest intellectual debate can survive only so many roadblocks.

The situation at Chicago is reminiscent of one at Yale two years ago, when no less than the university president welcomed the incoming class with a speech about the importance of free expression.

The very next year, however, the university’s institutional hypocrisy was exposed – with Yale embroiled in a pointless controversy over, among other things, the political correctness of Halloween costumes.

The fight for free speech on campus clearly has a way to go.

The goal of the college experience should be to expose students to different cultures, experiences, viewpoints, even cuisines. That means universities need to exert more control over what happens not only in the classroom, but also in the dormitory and the dining hall.

Then, once they graduate, students will be better equipped to understand both their country and their place in it. The more Americans practice the art of respectfully engaging their differences, the better off America’s civic life will be.

STAFF REPORTS EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Joliet Slammers made a successful return to the Frontier League playoffs when they met Evansville on Tuesday.

Joliet broke open a 2-2 tie by scoring twice in the eighth inning to capture a 4-2 victory over the Otters at historic Bosse Field in the opening game of the best-of-five series.

In their first playoff game since winning the league title in 2011, the Slammers went with the Frontier League’s Pitcher of the Year, Liam O’Sullivan, and he certainly delivered.

O’Sullivan only allowed two hits while striking out eight in 71/3 innings to collect the victory. Zach Hirsch relieved him and allowed one hit to earn the save. Joliet had eight hits.

In the Slammers’ eighth, Marc Flores led off and reached on an infield error. After Jake Gronsky grounded out to advance the runner, Mike Garza singled Flores with the winning run. Carter Bell (2 for 4) followed with a single and Garza scored to make it a 4-2 game.

Joliet collected single runs in the second and fifth to take a 2-0 lead. In the second, Bell and Joe Staley singled and Zarley Zalewski (2 for 3) singled home a run. Three innings later, Zalewski doubled, took third on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Charlie White. Alfredo Rodriguez also went 2 for 5 for the winners.

Evansville answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Julio Rodriguez got a two-out double to break up O’Sullivan’s no-hit bid and then Rolando Gomez homered to tie things up.

The teams play Game 2 today at 6:35 p.m. Game 3 will be Friday in Joliet at 7:05 p.m. In the other series, River City scored all of its runs in the ninth to stun Southern Illinois 4-3.

In the first game, our entire bench played and we were still able to play our game, so we have a very deep bench, which is nice. I’ve known almost every single one of these players since they were in junior high since I coached them in club and they still have that fun personality but they do get intense.

They all encourage each other, and our core can’t be that good without the support of our bench.”

“We have all of the pieces, we’re just working on putting them all together. A lot of us have played together for a long time so we have that trust foundation. Now it’s just about working on all of the components of the game. Our serve-pass game is our biggest struggle, and we also need to focus on our blocking. Once we do that, we’re going to be pretty unstoppable.”

In the finale, Minooka grabbed a 10-6 lead on a kill by Rocky Perinar, but West was able to pull to within a point at 13-12 on an ace from Emma Baxter and again at 15-14 following an ace by Areli Hernandez. However, Minooka used a key run where it got two kills from Bonde, another from Kate Barker (three kills, two blocks) and an ace from Papesh to go up 19-14.

The host’s lead moved to 23-16 before the Tigers made one last challenge.

Lauren Widlowski started things with a kill and following three hitting errors, Amanda Paez served an ace and Widlowski added another kill to make it 23-22. But a wide serve by the Tigers and a block from Papesh finally ended the drama.

“If we get a pass, then a set and a kill, we can be pretty unstoppable,” Barker said. “We’ve been working on serve-receive since that’s our main issue. Since we’re all close, we play better. We’re all like best friends on and off the court so it makes the winning better than it is.”

NEW LENOX – A really good offensive volleyball game for a middle is when she has a .500 hitting percentage.

Well, Lincoln-Way East Haley Hart one-upped that against Joliet Catholic last week.

With the game on the line, JCA set up a double block to try to stop the junior middle. Hart swung around both blockers and bounced the ball around the 12-foot line to give Lincoln-Way East a 25-23, 25-23 win over the Angels.

That was Hart’s ninth kill in nine attempts for a perfect game against a highly regarded defense.

“We were expecting a really great game because of what we know about JCA’s skill,” Hart said. “They were great competition, which makes it more fun to play. It makes us play to our highest potential.”

“We felt that if we were able to match their defensive intensity, we had a more diverse offense with more options,” East coach Kris Fiore said.

“We would be able to beat them if we could play the same defensively. We were able to get Haley and our other middle established.

“By the end of the game, they keyed on Haley, but she was able to get around the double blocks. To end the game, she hit 12-foot line hit around the double block. Of the last four points that we scored, she had two blocks for a kill and a kill. She took over at the end, and we needed that.”

With some impressive middle talent graduating last season, what the area needed was a new exciting middle. After the first two weeks, Hart already is starting to show herself as a new middle force.

Hart is leading East with a .439 hitting percentage. She has only nine errors with 38 kills.

More importantly, Hart is not just a hitting middle. She is a well-rounded middle who is strong at the net offensively and defensively. For the season, she has 14 blocks.

Hart is one reason East could be a dangerous team come post-season.

Many teams in the area have go-to outside hitters, but not a lot have middles that can get a kill for every ball they touch during a game.

“Most teams just have strong outsides and go to them every time,” Hart said. “Blockers know where to go then and can trap block them. For us, our setters can go to everyone. It definitely helps because everyone can put the

Things get interesting early in SPC race VIEWS Dick Goss From the beginning of this high school football season, the Southwest Prairie Conference race figured to be a wild ride.

Joliet Central and Joliet West joined what had been an eight-team conference. With their entries, the league went to full round-robin schedule.

That meant nobody had to be concerned with arranging nonconference matchups. The competitive balance, meanwhile, was likely to be as strong as or stronger than ever.

Two weeks into the fray, Plainfield East joins five-time defending SPC champion Oswego and Oswego East, which has taken a giant stride forward with the addition of Iowa-bound running back transfer Ivory Kelly-Martin, atop the standings with 2-0 records. Joliet West, Minooka, Plainfield North and Plainfield South all are 1-1 and feel as though they can be playoff teams.

To make the playoffs, an SPC team will need to finish 5-4. If you can beat Joliet Central, Plainfield Central and Romeoville, all of whom currently are 0-2, you would need to beat two of the other six to get in.

Lose to one of them and you would need to beat three of the other six.

It’s not an easy task regardless of how you do against the three teams currently winless, and who is to say one or two of those teams won’t get hot and knock off two or three of the more likely playoff contenders? But five teams easily could qualify, and you can imagine scenarios where six will get in. Seven is possible mathematically but virtually impossible in practice.

“This is a wide-open conference,” Plainfield South coach Bill Bicker said after the Cougars’ 12-3 loss to Joliet West last Saturday afternoon.

“There should be entertaining games all season long. One thing that’s interesting is there have been some defensive struggles early.”

Although leading only 3-0 late in the second quarter against Joliet West, South had the upper hand in terms of possession time and opportunities.

The Cougars were victimized by the Tigers’ goal-line stand shortly before halftime, and a couple of plays later, West receiver Terrance Neal turned a short reception into an 85-yard scoring play. Instead

In the second half, the Tigers had the ball more often and their defense bent but stepped up and made the big plays.

“The first half our offense didn’t run more than 20 plays,” West coach Jason Aubry said. “The second half we were able to run the ball and that made a big difference.”

The Cougars, meanwhile, had opportunities all afternoon but failed to make it happen.

“We had plays to make that were there,” Bicker said. “Things we wanted to do were open. It was not for lack of effort that it didn’t get done. That’s the nature of the game, though. You can’t expect kids to be perfect.

“We will watch the film. What it will show us is there were plays to be made. We’ve got to make ’em.”

My weekend of coverage began last Friday night with Minooka’s 33-7 victory at Joliet Central. The Steelmen led, 7-0, on the strength of Jomarre McNair’s 61-yard interception return for a touchdown.

But the Indians moved ahead, 13-7, at halftime thanks to Isaiah Hill’s excellent grab of a 31-yard scoring pass from John Carnagio.

McNair, who was blanketing Hill on that TD reception, went down with severe leg cramps on the play.

He played sparingly the rest of the way and was not at 100 percent when he did get back on the field.

As much as the Steelmen missed McNair at his receiver position on offense, they suffered from his absence in the defensive secondary at least as much. With McNair sidelined, Carnagio went 7 for 10 in the

third quarter alone, for 146 yards and three touchdowns.

“Our skill players got on a roll in the second half,” Minooka coach Paul Forsythe said. “(Max) Christiano made a real nice play on his touchdown.”

Although having the tough-toswallow 7-6 Week 1 loss to Oswego on its ledger, the Indians are a candidate to contend for the SPC title. This week, they are at Plainfield East, which has beaten Joliet Central, 6-0, and Plainfield Central, 41-20, so far.

Another intriguing matchup is Saturday’s Oswego at Joliet West game. The Panthers blanked Plainfield North, 12-0, last week.

“We’re looking forward to facing Oswego,” Aubry said. “They’re obviously a good team, but they haven’t been scoring a lot. I was happy with our defense (against Plainfield South). Hopefully, we’re ready to go against Oswego.”

Brewers cool off Cubs, get 5 runs in 1st MILWAUKEE – Jonathan Villar homered to start a five-run first inning against Jason Hammel, and the Milwaukee Brewers cooled off the Cubs with a 12-5 victory on Tuesday night.

The NL Central-leading Cubs had won seven of eight and were 41 games over .500 after winning Monday’s series opener.

But Milwaukee rallied from a 1-0 deficit as its first seven batters reached against Hammel (14-8). Villar homered on Hammel’s second pitch, Ryan Braun had an RBI single, Domingo Santana singled in two runs and Martin Maldonado added a sacrifice fly.

Wily Peralta (6-9) gave up four runs and six hits in 72/3 innings, leaving after Anthony Rizzo’s second home run of the game, a two-run drive. Peralta became the first Brewers starter to pitch into the eighth since Junior Guerra on July 29. He has a 3.35 ERA in six starts since his Aug. 8 recall from Triple-A. Given a lead on Rizzo’s first-inning homer, Hammel allowed nine runs – eight earned – and 13 hits in 52/3 innings. He had entered with a 2.50 ERA in 14 starts against Milwaukee.

CHICAGO – Jose Abreu hit his fifth homer in seven games, Miguel Gonzalez came off the disabled list to throw 61/3 innings of six-hit ball and the White Sox cooled off the Detroit Tigers, 2-0, Tuesday night.

The Tigers went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on in their fourth loss in 15 games.

Detroit fell one game behind Baltimore for the second AL wild card and stayed 41/2 games behind first-place Cleveland in the AL Central.

Abreu connected off Matt Boyd (5-3) in the second for his 23rd homer as the Sox got their third win in nine games.

Gonzalez (3-6) struck out four in his first start since Aug. 11 after a groin injury.

Sitton, Long could accelerate rebuild Biggest weakness only 48 hours ago looks dramatically improved LAKE FOREST – Heading into the season, the Bears clearly are still a rebuilding team that looks to be a notch below the legitimate playoff contenders. But with only one veteran signing and some promising medical news over the holiday weekend, general manager Ryan Pace and Co. appear to have seriously accelerated their construction project.

There still are significant questions to be answered in the secondary, at tight end, running back, with a pass rush missing linebacker Pernell McPhee and placekicker, but the Bears’ most glaring weakness before Labor Day was on the offensive line.

With the arrival of Pro Bowler Josh Sitton, from Green Bay of all places, and the return to practice of Kyle Long, three of the five spots on that line are dramatically better.

Why Sitton?

“First of all, the skins are on the wall,” Pace explained Monday. “A three-time Pro Bowler, he’s extremely strong and powerful in the run game and pass pro. He’s one of those guys that just make it look easy – you never see him stressed or exposed.

“He’s in good position, smart, very intelligent player, and that shows up when you meet with him and all the research we did on him echoed that, as well.”

Long, who knows more than a little about being a Pro Bowl guard, agrees with his GM. “It’s an exciting time,” Long said.

“Obviously, bringing in a guy like Josh, who has done it for so long ... .

At the beginning of the year, when I think about guys I’ve got to beat out to be the guy, No. 71 is usually one of the two of three guys that I circle as guys I have to beat. Now he is on our team.”

The news of Sitton’s arrival also was celebrated with Long’s return to practice after missing two weeks with a bum shoulder.

Although his status for the Texans on Sunday and beyond still is uncertain, when Long is healthy, he, Sitton, Baltimore’s Marshal Yanda, Oakland’s Kelechi Osemele, Dallas’ Zack Martin and Pittsburgh’s David DeCastro usually are the top candidates in discussions of the best guard in the NFL. Before this weekend, the Bears’ starting guards were rookie Cody Whitehair and career journeyman Ted Larsen.

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush Although Whitehair was the top guard prospect in this year’s draft, the flip to Long and Sitton is like trading in your Ford Taurus for a Maserati.

Even better it seems, Whitehair now is destined to take over the starting center spot from Larsen and undrafted free-agent Cornelius Edison, who was waived over the weekend and re-signed Monday to the practice squad.

That move has not yet been confirmed, but coach John Fox told us Monday, “I think maybe right now looking at it I think it’s his best position.

“Unfortunately, prior to the acquisition of Josh (Sitton), we weren’t real fluid to put him there a whole lot, but he has had reps.”

There still are questions to be answered, as Bobby Massie and Charles Leno are anything but sure things at right and left tackle, respectively, but with two of the best guards in the game in the middle, Fox’s run-first offense is looking a lot scarier, and quarterback Jay Cutler should face little pressure up the middle in the pocket.

It also is worth noting that at 30, Sitton is the Bears’ elder statesman on the line. With Long at 27 and Leno, Massie, Whitehair and the injured Hroniss Grasu all 26 or younger, this group could be together for a while.

Fox professed pleasure with Grasu’s development at center before he tore his ACL, and many – including yours truly – still believe Long’s best position could be left tackle.

Should the Leno experiment fail and Grasu make a healthy return next year, with Sitton on board, the Bears could move Long out to Cutler’s blindside and Whitehair to guard.

That would render Fox’s ground game ambidextrous – how’d you like to run left behind Long and Sitton or right behind Whitehair and the massive Massie?

Sitton is just one man, but assuming the Packers don’t have knowledge on Sitton the Bears lack, his arrival is huge – both literally and figuratively.

If you ask a chef what his or her favorite steak is, chances are the answer will be rich, beefy skirt steak.

Skirt steak often is associated with Tex-Mex tacos and fajitas, but I grill it year ’round and pair it with everything. It is prized for its flavor, but must be cut against the grain of the meat or it is hard to chew. Many people marinate the skirt steak, but I like to grill it over a medium high heat, about 550 degrees F, seasoned with nothing but olive oil and kosher salt so I taste all of the natural beef flavor.

Each cow has two skirts steaks – the inside and the outside, which is the most flavorful. Most grocery stores simply label their skirt steak “skirt,” but if you can find a butcher who offers both, be sure to ask for the outside skirt.

This recipe is a nod to skirt steak’s humble roots. The simple tomato and corn salsa cuts the richness of the beef and adds a freshness to the dish. The beer-braised black beans are coarsely mashed with onion and garlic and doused with fresh lime juice just before serving. And the tortillas are optional.

You can use whatever tomato you like for the salsa. If it is a regular tomato, cut into a small dice. If you have small cherry tomatoes, cut them in quarters. The shucked corn is brushed with oil and seasoned simply with salt and placed on the grill to char and blister. Once the corn is marked, it is cut off the cob and added to the tomatoes to make a salsa that really doubles as a side.

You can grill the steak and the corn together and assemble the salsa while the meat is resting. Make the beans before you start the salsa and the steak or the steak will get cold while the beans finish cooking.

4 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 small white onion, chopped 1 teaspoon ground cumin 2 15-ounces cans black beans, rinsed and drained 1 12-ounce Mexican or domestic beer Juice of one lime Zest of one lime Chopped fresh cilantro to taste, about 2 tablespoons Blistered Corn and Tomato Salsa: 2 large ripe garden tomato, chopped, or pint grape or cherry tomatoes, washed and cut into quarters 2 ears of corn, shucked and blistered on the grill 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro, plus sprigs for garnish Juice of one lime Kosher salt Tortillas, optional About 45 minutes before you want to eat, heat about two tablespoons oil in heavy large saucepan over medium-high heat.

Add garlic, onions and cumin. Sauté until onions begin to brown. Add beans and beer to sautéed vegetables and cook 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Coarsely mash beans with the back of a fork. Continue simmering

until thick, stirring frequently, about 10 minutes. Keep warm while you grill the meat and make the salsa. Just before serving, season to taste with lime juice, salt and pepper.

Transfer mixture to a bowl. Sprinkle with lime zest and cilantro.

Preheat grill with all burners on high and reduce heat to a medium-high direct heat.

Brush corn with olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Place corn directly on the cooking grates and grill for 3-4 minutes. Turn corn occasionally to roast and blister all sides.

Remove from grill to a clean platter.

When the corn is cool enough to handle, remove the corn from the cob by standing the cob on end and running a sharp knife down the cob to remove the kernels.

Wash and chop the tomatoes into halves or quarters, depending on the size, making sure to reserve all juices. Put tomatoes and juices into a large glass bowl and set aside.

Cut blistered corn and add it to the tomatoes, add lime juice a little at a time, tasting and adding until you think the balance of the tomato juice with the lime is right – basically it should taste good without too much of a citrus flavor. Season with salt, stir and toss in the chopped cilantro. Let sit covered – out of the refrigerator until ready to serve. Do not make too far in advance or you will lose the flavors of the fresh cut tomatoes.

Brush steak with olive oil and season steak with about 1/2 teaspoon of kosher salt just before placing on the grill.

Place meat directly on the cooking grates and grill for 3-4 minutes. Turn steak once halfway through the cooking time. Grill a total of 6-8 minutes for medium rare meat.

Remove from grill to a clean platter and let rest for 5-7 minutes before carving across the grain. Serve with the braised black beans and the salsa.

30 Alzheimer’s caregivers can find peace Note to readers: This column originally ran in October 2013.

Dear Dr. K: I do my best to care for my

mother, who has Alzheimer’s disease. But I often feel guilty and frustrated. Can you help me change my outlook – for my sake and my mother’s?

Dear Reader: Fortunately, I never had to face the challenge you face, as both my parents died while in full possession of their faculties. But many of my patients and friends are experiencing what you are going through. And like you, they often feel guilty and judge themselves harshly.

The sad truth is today there is little anyone can do to prevent fully the slow decline of someone afflicted with Alzheimer’s. As I look at the status of research on the disease, I’m an optimist. I think some powerful ways to prevent and treat the disease may well be discovered in the next 20 to 30 years.

As a caregiver, there is only so much you can do. And even when you’re doing everything right, a person who is not in her right mind might not appreciate what you’re doing. When that person is someone you love, that’s really hard to deal with.

In her helpful book, “Mindfulness Support for Alzheimer’s Caregivers,” my Harvard Medical School colleague Dr. Gail Gazelle helps guide caregivers back to physical and emotional health so they can continue to care for their loved ones while preserving their own well-being.

Dr. Gazelle offers lots of practical advice, tips and exercises to help you reframe your thoughts. Your circumstances might not change, but your ability to control the way you experience your circumstances can. Here are a few examples:

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff • Guilt. When your loved one has Alzheimer’s, the guilt can seem endless. You feel guilty you don’t visit often enough, or you don’t do enough. You feel guilty about things you did or didn’t do before the disease took over. When you experience guilt, ask yourself: In what ways can I replace my guilt with awareness of the good things I’m doing for my loved one?

• The present moment. Experience what’s happening right now, without labeling or judging it. Don’t dwell on the past or worry about the future. Enjoy the view from wherever you stand. It decreases worry and stress.

• Moments of joy. During the most trying times, we sometimes find moments of joy. With Alzheimer’s, such moments might be small but significant: a smile of understanding. Your mother’s cooperation while getting dressed. A caress that takes you back to earlier years. Hang on to these moments by keeping a journal describing the times when you feel a strong sense of joy. Describe what made the moment so joyful.

Be a source of reassurance and what you think might be happy memories.

Touch your mother the way you always have. Sing a song she loved, and try to get her to join you. When you remind her of what she loved, you can bring both of you a measure of peace.

Dear Abby: DEAR ABBY When my husband was a Jeanne teenager, he had Phillips an affair with his mother’s 20-plusyears-older friend “Nicolle.” He would call her by a nickname to signal he wanted sex.

Fast-forward three decades. His family, unaware of their illicit and illegal relationship, regularly invites Nicolle to our family functions. They even call her by that pet nickname, unaware of the connotations.

Their affair ended years before I met my husband. But whenever she is around, she follows him like a lost puppy. How do I get over being uncomfortable and angry at her? I know the truth, but she doesn’t know I know. And, of course, my husband doesn’t want his family to know. What do I do? – Knowing Too Much Dear Knowing: Have you spoken to your husband about this? He should talk to Nicolle and say, “My wife knows about us, and she is bothered by it.” He also should tell her to stop following him around or decline future invitations to the family gatherings.

Dear Abby: One of my dear friends is pregnant with her first child, and she couldn’t be more excited. Even though she’s only in her second trimester, her “baby bump” is conspicuous, and it seems people (friends, family and complete strangers) can’t help but comment she seems “ready to pop.” When they learn she still has many weeks to go, invariably people ask whether she’s having twins (she’s not). Her grandmother went so far as to ask for ultrasound photos to prove she’s carrying only one baby.

It has made my friend very self-conscious.

Even though she’s in perfect health, the comments are really getting to her. Any advice on how to graciously deflect these unwanted comments? – No Twins In The Twin Cities Dear No Twins: When someone volunteers your friend is so big she must be carrying twins, she should say, “Nope. Only one healthy baby in there, according to my gynecologist.”

She needs to remember there is no end to the insensitive personal comments people make, and it’s important to keep her sense of humor and keep in mind she’ll have to hear them only for a few more months.

Dear Abby: My husband is in his mid-70s. We live in the Pacific Northwest. When the temperature is warm, my husband walks around the yard with his shirt off. He’s not fat, but he’s not thin either. He has gray hair on his chest.

It looks awful and it’s embarrassing. I think it’s rude to the neighbor ladies who see him walk around like this. What do you think? – An

In this example, North-South were using a strong-club system with fourcard majors. North’s response was a splinter bid, showing game-going values in hearts and a singleton (or void) in clubs.

This deal occurred during the 1979 European Team Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland. Against four hearts, West led the club seven (second-highest from a weak suit).

The declarer, Dano de Falco from Italy, won East’s club queen with his ace and immediately returned the club jack. When West played low in tempo, South placed the club king with East. Declarer ruffed in the dummy, drew trumps ending in his hand, and led a diamond to the jack and king. East might have shifted to a low spade, but he knew that that was not without risk. Instead, he returned his diamond 10. West took the trick and led another diamond to dummy’s queen.

Now South had to avoid two spade losers, but he knew that West had the ace. How? If East had held that card, he would have opened the bidding.

So, de Falco, with no legitimate way to make his contract, led dummy’s spade jack. East, thinking declarer had a guess with the spade king-10 in his hand, played low smoothly. But declarer ran the jack, and when the ace appeared, claimed his contract.

East should have realized that he was known not to have the spade ace and covered the jack.

De Falco was awarded the Bols Brilliancy Prize for this effort.
