JJC continues progress on major construction projects

JOLIET – Joliet Junior College staff reported at the college’s buildings and grounds committee last week on the status of several ongoing projects in its Master Plan.

Richard Lyman, the college’s manager of construction and facility planning, updated committee members on the Renaissance Center renovations, City Center campus interior work, JJC Event Center construction and Romeoville campus expansion.

At the JJC Event Center, previously known as the Multipurpose Facility, located at the college’s main campus, the roofing, exterior stone and interior metal stud framing is complete, according to Lyman’s presentation.

Crews are working on installing skylights, drywall, storefront glass, painting, concourse soffit framing and startup of rooftop units. Substantial completion of the JJC Event Center also is set for January.

For the expansion of JJC’s Romeoville campus, Lyman noted the exterior brick and stone is 95 percent complete and the 135th Street widening also is done.

“Our roofing is just about complete.

There’s one small section left,” he said.

Some of the work in progress includes drywall installation, elevator installation and landscaping. The project is in budget

Interior work is still continuing in six floors of the City Center campus building, which is in downtown Joliet near the college’s Renaissance Center.

Some of the work being done includes light fixture installation, flooring, hand sink installation, drywall and taping and framing, according to Lyman’s presentation. The lobby ceiling has been installed

in the first floor.

On Aug. 9, the JJC board approved moving forward with the acquisition of property being occupied by Chicken-N-Spice nearby. JJC officials plan create more parking for students and develop a pedestrian mall on the property. The restaurant has a lease there until 2022.

JJC Interim President Judy Mitchell has said the college plans for the grand opening of the City Center building in January.

Renaissance Center

Crews have demolished restrooms and floor framing at kitchens in the Renaissance Center. They are working on the pouring of elevator pit walls, floor slab pour at the ice carving room, sprinkler piping and more.

The Renaissance Center renovation is a three-phase project, Lyman said to committee members. Phase one completion has been set for Dec. 16, phase two on March 17 and phase on July 31. The project currently is in budget, according to Lyman’s presentation.

ReStore celebrating 5 years of home improvement

Will County Habitat for Humanity’s furniture and home improvement shop is celebrating its fifth anniversary with “Homes for the Hounds,” a doghouse-building event scheduled for Sept. 24.

“I wanted to do something just a little unique,” ReStore manager Heidi Serena said.

Thirteen community organizations have formed building teams. Each team will construct a house at the event and there will be judging the day of the build for awards. The houses will then be sold to the highest bidders during the following two weeks.

Andi Armitage is building for the “Pup Squad,” a team of records employees with the Joliet Police Department. She said no one on the squad has construction experience, but the group loves dogs and wants to give back to the community. They’re planning to build a house with a Dr. Seuss theme.

“This is going to be an adventure,” Armitage said.

Funds from the doghouse sales will go to Will County Habitat for Humanity, K9s for Veteran Warriors and P.A.W.S. of Tinley Park, but Serena said the event is meant to be more of a celebration than a fundraiser.

Frankfort bids adieu to summer with annual festival

The kids have been back in school for two weeks and the equinox isn’t official until the 22nd, but for many people Labor Day marked the end of summer.

“We don’t want to give it up,” said Dave Leyva, who attended the Frankfort Fall Festival on Monday. Instead of having to work in Joliet, Leyva and his wife, Tammy, were seeking “freshsqueezed lemonade” – a good summer drink. The couple also planned to look

at dozens of arts and crafts from vendors set up throughout downtown Frankfort.

The grassy area Boy Scout Troop 270 operated as a parking lot was filling up with cars shortly after the festival opened for the day at 10 a.m. Some waited to ride in a Providence Catholic High School bus being used as a shuttle while others chose to walk the half-mile along the Old Plank Road Trail or Nebraska Street to reach the festivities. Hickory, Oak, Ash, White and Kansas streets were filled with crafters, food vendors and carnival rides.

Amazon goes East

bokon@shawmedia.com MONEE – The latest Amazon fulfillment center to be announced might be called Amazon East in Will County.

Amazon last week announced that it plans a fourth fulfillment center in Will County, but this one is going into an area far enough from the others that it is expected to draw from a different worker pool.

The 850,000-square-foot Monee fulfillment center is being built at the Interstate 57 interchange with Manhattan-Monee Road, making it easily accessible by car for workers coming from south suburban Cook County as well as the surrounding towns of eastern Will County.

“We’re very excited,” Monee Village Administrator Ruben Bautista said.

“It’s going to bring more jobs to our area – not only to the village but also the region.”

At least 2,000 jobs, Bautista said he has been told.

Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr. said he heard Amazon will employ as many as 2,500 workers, which would make the Monee facility the fulfillment center with the most jobs of the four expected to be in place in the county by the fourth quarter of 2017.

“Last summer at this time we had no employment at Amazon,” Walsh said, noting how rapidly the e-commerce company has been moving into Will County. “Now the largest one of all is going to be build in eastern Will County.”

In less than two years, Amazon could

go from zero jobs in the county to about 6,500 employees depending on two factors: Whether the job count at three facilities yet to open is as high as expected, and whether Amazon announces any more plans to add operations in Will County.

The number of Amazon fulfillment centers going into Will County is partly due to the fact that it is “such a huge county,” said John Greuling, chief executive officer of the Will County Center for Economic Development.

“The best thing for us from an economic development standpoint is that it’s on the east side of the county,” Greuling said. “There’s a tremendous workforce out in the south suburbs.”

Monee and surrounding eastern Will County towns have seen some economic development. Near the future Amazon facility is a 1 million-square-foot Michelin distribution center, but that facility is being phased out as the tire company moves operations to Wilmington.

Development along I-57 has not matched the pace of what has been seen along Interstate 80, the nearest interstate for Amazon’s operations in Joliet (one open and one under development), and Interstate 55, which is near a fulfillment center being developed in Romeoville.

Amazon has not confirmed the size of the workforce in Monee other than to say it will include “hundreds and hundreds” of jobs. They also have not said when it will open.

But it could open next summer.

“They’re on a fast track,” Bautista said. “I think that they’re looking to be operating by July 2017.”

Over 250,000 people attend the three-day festival, which marked its 48th year. This year’s theme was “Happy Days” – meant to recall the mid-’60s when the festival began.

On Monday morning, one of the most popular items being carried by festival-goers was a cardboard fan provided by Barz & Associates and Lincoln-Way Select Properties that were being given away at the Chamber of Commerce stand.

“It makes a great bee swatter,” volunteer Lesa Bachmann joked.

Bachmann said volunteers had spent several hours gluing the wooden handle to the cardboard fan and had gone through “thousands” of them Monday morning.

“The weather this year is definitely the best we’ve had in a while,” said Bachmann, who was working at her fourth Fall Festival. “I think that makes the biggest difference in the crowd, how long they stay, if they come back.”

Bachmann acknowledged while the festival takes place in the summer, it’s also a “transition” marker for many.

“I think you know fall is truly around the corner,” she said – indicating the autumnal themes and decorations many vendors displayed.

But Rachel McCurdy, proprietor of The Talking Shirt, will wait until later this month to push warmer outfits. A “Big Summer Blowout” banner hung across the front of her booth.

“I go by the official solstice,” McCurdy said. “My birthday was [Sunday] and I like having a summer birthday. I don’t want to give in.”

Though this was her first time selling at Fall Fest, McCurdy noted it was “busier” than other festivals she’s attended in the hotter months.

Across Breidert Green, Phylis Renee Marconi and her band were enjoying a set list that reflected the weather.

“Let’s play it. Let’s hope we don’t succumb to it,” Marconi said before launching into a cover of Martha & The Vandellas “Heat Wave,” which was followed by the Hollies’ “Long Cool Woman.”

Will County Audubon Chapter to offer program on flowers and fruits

JOLIET – Appreciation.

That’s what Kenneth Robertson, retired University of Illinois professor of plant taxonomy, hopes people will gain from his presentation.

Using his close-up photography, Robertson will discuss “Prairie Plants Close-Up, The Hidden World of Flowers and Fruits” on Sept. 8 at the monthly meeting of the Will County Audubon Chapter at Pilcher Park Nature Center in Joliet.

Some of the topics Robertson will address include the diversity in size, shape, color and fragrance of flowers, the reasons plants make flowers and the varied ways pollination occurs.

For instance, certain flowers have long tubes to hold nectar in place, useful for hovering moths.

Once armed with this knowledge, people will never see gardens and produce bins the same way.

“When you stop to really look at a flower, dissect it and tear it apart, you’ll just be amazed,” Robertson said.

“There’s so much to learn.”

Anything with a seed inside is botanically a fruit, Robertson said, and that includes bell peppers, okra and tomatoes. Most people never view a strawberry the same way once Robertson takes them through each part, step by step.

MORRIS – When most people hear the word “jalopy,” they picture a broken-down car that barely runs. But the vehicles featured at the annual Jalopy Fest in Morris are anything but that.

The cars showcased during the festival celebrate everything America was in the 1950s and 1960s. It features 1969 or older custom cars, and 1964 and older hot rods, some that spit fire from their tailpipes.

This year marks the second year the event will be held on a Friday night and all day Saturday to better accommodate those who want to attend. In addition to the vehicles, Jalopy Fest features a Pin Up Contest and rockabilly music.

Event organizer Bernie Myers said it is a good time for everyone, and he hopes to see continued increase in participation.

The event starts at 5 p.m. Sept. 9 and gears up again at 9 a.m. Sept. 10 at the Grundy County Fairgrounds.

Nebraska escapee tries hiding from police in Minooka cornfield

bstanley@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Police on Monday arrested a suspected car thief and jail escapee who ran into a cornfield in an attempt to escape officers.

Police Chief Justin Meyer said the incident began at 10:25 a.m. when an officer ran a registration check on a 1999 Lincoln Town Car with Nebraska license plates at Pilot Travel Center,

301 Ridge Road.

Police records showed that the vehicle was stolen and officers tried to have the Town Car pull over, but the driver refused until he reached the BP Gas at 103 N. Ridge Road, Meyer said.

Troy O’Brian, 42, of Gary, Indiana, then fled from the car and ran west into the cornfield behind the gas station, Meyer said. Officers set up a perimeter around the field with assistance from Grundy County Sheriff’s,

Channahon and Morris police.

At 11:17 a.m. a state police canine unit found O’Brian in the field and he was taken into custody without incident, Meyer said.

O’Brian and his passenger, Melissa Sancillo, 27, of Gary, Indiana, were both arrested on charges of possession of a stolen motor vehicle. O’Brian was also wanted for probation violations in Indiana, Meyer said.

According to a news release from

the Lincoln County Sheriff’s office in Nebraska, on Thursday O’Brian walked off a work detail at the Lincoln County Courthouse with only eight hours left on his sentence. O’Brian allegedly took a Toyota Corolla that a maintenance worker had left the keys in.

Nebraska authorities had been searching for O’Brian and Sancillo, his girlfriend, since Thursday, according to KNOP News in North Platte.

Four new laws that took effect last month seek to expand hunting opportunities and fishing opportunities while protecting state lands and wildlife.

The laws were signed Aug. 20 by Gov. Bruce Rauner during Conservation Day at the Illinois State Fair.

Senate Bill 2410 expands the youth license program to include trapping.

People younger than 18 may apply for a license, and must be accompanied by an adult age 21 or older who also has a valid state trapping license.

House Bill 5788 added catfish to the list of fish that can be taken by bow fishing, or the use of specialized archery equipment to shoot them, and House Bill 4604 allows for permits to take bobwhite quail, chukars and gray partridge on public hunting grounds. Both bills allow the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to create rules setting limits

without requiring a state statute.

Under Senate Bill 3003, the department can offer free landowner hunting permits for deer and turkey as long as the landowner has at least 40 acres. The bill also combines the application for deer and turkey into one, and requires the department to hold a youth turkey season for two consecutive weekends instead of the current one weekend.

Department Director Wayne Rosenthal said in a statement that the new laws will “help our conservation efforts and will allow a new generation to develop a love for the great outdoors here in Illinois.”

Rauner, who hunts and fishes, called the youth bill an investment in young hunters and fishers that also promotes stewardship.

“Giving more opportunities to appreciate our resources to these young Illinoisans will ensure conservation of our lands for generations to come,” Rauner said.

Caterpillar considers closing Belgian site, laying off 2,000 The ASSOCIATED PRESS BRUSSELS – U.S. heavy equipment maker Caterpillar said Friday that it may close a Belgian manufacturing site and lay off about 2,000 workers, an announcement met with dismay and alarm by employees and the government.

In a post on its corporate website, Caterpillar said that in line with its September 2015 global restructuring plan, it was considering shifting production of construction equipment now at its Gosselies site to Grenoble, France, and other facilities outside Europe.

“If this intention would be con-

firmed, it would result in a collective layoff of about 2,000 employees and in the closure of the Gosselies site,” the company said.

Prime Minister Charles Michel and Economy Minister Kris Peeters were expected to attend an emergency meeting with leaders of the Wallonia regional government, home to the Gosselies site. Paul Magnette, leader of the regional government, sought meetings with unions and company management.

Magnette told local media Friday he was scandalized by Caterpillar’s announcement since the Gosselies site had been given government financial support.

Howard Cruise, 92, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016, with his loving family by his side.

He was born in Chicago to the late John and Frances Cruise. He lived most of his life in New Lenox and resided in Shorewood for the last few years. He was an U.S. Army veteran who served in WWII. He worked hard for many years at Clipper Express in Chicago. Howard’s greatest passion in life was his family. He was a devoted and loving husband and father to his wife, Evelyn, of 59 years and to his 11 children. He was a kind and gentle man who was willing to offer any kind of help to everyone.

He was the caring father of Joyce (Wally) Gougar, Patricia (William) DeLaurenti, Kathy Cruise, Dennis (Mary) Cruise, Ronald (Nancy) Cruise, Diane (William) Hall, Karen (Paul) Tamayo, Keith (Marcie) Cruise, Rita (Steve) Garrett and Janice (Jay) Kulig; 26 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Margaret Kanne, Hester (Larry) Schmidt, Florence (Robert) Zusag and Frances (late, Edward) Knowles; and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn; son, Michael; brothers, Willie, Robert, Thomas and John; and sister, Emily.

Jorge was a devoted father and grandfather who enjoyed spending all of his free time with his family. He was a devout Catholic. He was always looking for something to fix. Jorge worked in many different fields throughout his life and sacrificed so that his family would be cared for. He will always be remembered for his humble and generous nature.

The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Hugh O’Brian, who shot to fame as Sheriff Wyatt Earp in what was hailed as television’s first adult Western, has died.

He was 91.

A representative from HOBY, a philanthropic organization O’Brian founded, says he died at home Monday morning Hugh O’Brian in Beverly Hills.

Until “The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp” debuted in September 1955, most TV Westerns – “The Lone Ranger,” ‘’Hopalong Cassidy,” the

singing cowboys’ series – were aimed at adolescent boys.

“Wyatt Earp,” on the other hand, was based on a real-life Western hero, and some of its stories were authentic.

(The real Earp, who lived from 1848 to 1929, is most famous for his participation in the 1881 “Shootout at the O.K. Corral” in Tombstone, Arizona.)

Critics quickly praised it, and it made O’Brian a star.

“If we were doing Westerns with the chase and the fights that last endlessly, and the sheriff’s daughter in sunbonnet and calico and the Wanted posters ... we wouldn’t reach the audience we reach each week,” O’Brian once said.

“Gunsmoke,” which debuted just a

few days after “Wyatt Earp,” became an even bigger hit, and by 1956-57, both were in the top 20 shows. In the 195859 season, Westerns accounted for an incredible seven out of the top 10 U.S. television series, including No. 1 “Gunsmoke” and No. 2 “Wagon Train,” with “Wyatt Earp” at No. 10.

“Wyatt Earp” remained a Top 20 hit until 1960, but it was canceled the following year after being supplanted by the avalanche of other adult Westerns.

O’Brian, meanwhile, continued to work frequently in movies, television and theater through the 1990s, although he never again achieved the prominence he enjoyed as Wyatt Earp.

He starred in the 1970s detective

series “Search” and appeared in such films as “In Harm’s Way” and “Ten Little Indians,” and reprised his role as Earp in 1994’s “Wyatt Earp: Return to Tombstone,” a film that combined new footage with colorized scenes from the original black-and-white TV show.

He also had a small but memorable role as the faro dealer in John Wayne’s last film, “The Shootist,” and later noted with pride that it gave him the distinction of being the last bad guy killed by Wayne.

Late in his career, O’Brian made frequent guest appearances in television series and variety shows and toured in the national companies of “Cactus Flower,” “1776” and “Guys and Dolls.”

Far-right activist, author Phyllis Schlafly dies at 92 ST. LOUIS – Phyllis Schlafly, the outspoken conservative activist who helped defeat the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s and founded the Eagle Forum political group, has died.

She was 92.

Schlafly died Monday afternoon of cancer at her home in St. Louis, her son John Schlafly said.

Schlafly rose to national attention in 1964 with her self-published book, “A Choice Not an Echo,” that became a manifesto for the far right. The book, which sold 3 million copies, chronicled the history of the Republican National Convention and is credited for helping conservative Sen. Barry Goldwater of Arizona earn the 1964 GOP nomination.

She later helped lead efforts to defeat the proposed constitutional amendment that would have outlawed gender discrimination, galvanizing the party’s right. She’d graduated from college while working overnight at a factory during World War II, her newspaper column appeared in dozens of newspapers and she was politically active into her 90s – including attending every

The Eagle Forum pushes for low taxes, a strong military and English-only education. The group is against efforts it says are pushed by radical feminists or encroach on U.S. sovereignty, such as guest-worker visas, according to its website, which describes the Equal Rights Amendment as having had a “hidden agenda of tax-funded abortions and same-sex marriages.”

As momentum grew in the 1970s for the amendment, Schlafly became its most outspoken critic – and was vilified by its supporters. She had a pie smashed into her face and pig’s blood thrown on her, and feminist Betty Friedan once told Schlafly: “I’d like to burn you at the stake.” She was chastised in a 1970s “Doonesbury” – a framed copy of which hung on her office wall.

“What I am defending is the real rights of women,” Schlafly said at the time. “A woman should have the right to be in the home as a wife and mother.”

Thirty-five states ratified the amendment, three short of the necessary 38. Schlafly said amendment supporters couldn’t prove it was needed.

Observers: Monarch count very low this year The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Butterfly observers in Illinois are seeing a phenomenon this year that is playing out nationally: As the monarch starts its near-3,000mile winter migration from Canada to Mexico, their observed numbers are extremely low.

Chicago Academy of Sciences chief curator Doug Taron told The Chicago Tribune that the monarch is “the second or third most common species” of butterfly that observers record, but that this year, it’s the “seventh.”

Taron said this summer has been “pretty dismal” for butterflies in general in Illinois. Observers typically record 85 species a year, but current reports show 68 this summer.

Monarch Joint Venture co-chairwoman Karen Oberhauser said the monarchs’ difficult summer began March 9 in forested mountains near Mexico City, where tens of millions of them spend their winters. An intense storm lashed the area with rain, hail and snow, killing large numbers of the butterflies and inflicting heavy damage to their habitat.

Data from Monarch Larva Monitoring Project show the number of butterfly larva this year rivaled the level seen in 2013. That year yielded “the lowest number of monarchs ever seen in Mexico,” a Monarch Joint Venture report stated.

Since about 1996, the monarchs’ presence in their Mexico habitat has been shrinking, from almost 45 acres to 9.9 acres recording in 2015, accord-

RICHMOND, Va. – College applications and high school graduation are the biggest worries for most 17-year-olds. For Gavin Grimm, it’s waiting for the nation’s highest court to decide whether he can use the boys restroom.

Grimm, who was born female but identifies as male, heads back to Gloucester High School for his senior year this week as the U.S. Supreme Court considers whether to intervene in his case that challenges the county school’s policy barring him from using the bathroom of his choice.

For now, Grimm will have to continue using a private single-stall restroom or a bathroom in the nurse’s office. The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sided in April with Grimm, but the Supreme Court recently ruled that the school board can keep him out of the boys restroom at least until the justices decide whether to hear the school board’s appeal.

Wave of IS-claimed Syria bombing kill at least 48

BEIRUT – Near-simultaneous bombings claimed by the Islamic State group struck in and around strongholds of the Syrian government and Kurdish troops Monday, killing at least 48 people in a wave of attacks that came a day after the militants lost a vital link to the outside world along the Syrian-Turkish border.

said the attacks included six suicide bombings and one remotely detonated blast. Most targeted security forces.

The Britain-based Observatory, which maintains a network of contacts in Syria, put the overall death toll at 53, although Syrian state TV said 48 were killed.

Faraway asteroid named after Freddie Mercury

LONDON – Queen guitarist Brian May said an asteroid in Jupiter’s orbit has been named after the band’s late frontman Freddie Mercury on what would have been his 70th birthday.

May said the International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Centre has designated an asteroid discovered in 1991 as “Asteroid 17473 Freddiemercury.”

Obama cancels meeting with Philippine President Duterte

VIENTIANE, Laos – President Barack Obama called off a planned meeting Tuesday with new Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, seeking distance from a U.S. ally’s leader during a diplomatic tour that’s put Obama in close quarters with a cast of contentious world figures.

It’s unusual for one president to tell another what to say or not say, and much rarer to call the other a “son of a b****.” Duterte managed to do both just before flying to Laos for a regional summit, warning Obama not to challenge him over extrajudicial killings in the Philippines.

“Clearly, he’s a colorful guy,” Obama said.

“What I’ve instructed my team to do is talk to their Philippine counterparts to find out is this in fact a time where we can have some constructive, productive conversations.”

Early Tuesday, National Security Council spokesman Ned Price said the meeting with Duterte was off.

Duterte has been under intense global scrutiny over the more than 2,000 suspected drug dealers and users killed since he took office.

Obama had said he planned to raise the issue in his first meeting with Duterte, but the Philippine leader insisted he was only listening to his own country’s people.

“You must be respectful,” Duterte said of Obama. “Do not just throw questions.” Using the Tagalog phrase for “son of a b****,” he said, “Putang ina I will swear at you in that forum.”

He made the comment to reporters in Manilla.

Eager to show he wouldn’t yield, Obama

said he would “undoubtedly” still bring up human rights and due process concerns “if and when” the two do meet.

The bizarre rift with the leader of a U.S. treaty ally was the most glaring example of how Obama has frequently found himself bound to foreign countries and leaders whose ties to the U.S. are critical even if their values sharply diverge.

In Hangzhou this week, Obama’s first stop in Asia, he heaped praise on Chinese President Xi Jinping for hosting the Group of 20 economic summit in his country, an authoritarian state long accused of human-rights violations.

His next stop was another one-party communist country with a dismal rights record: Laos, where mysterious disappearances have fueled concerns about a government crackdown.

And sitting down with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Obama made no mention in public of the roughly 35,000 people Erdogan’s government detained after the summer’s failed coup in Turkey. Instead, he worked to reassure the NATO ally the U.S. would help bring to justice whoever was responsible for plotting the coup.

Obama also spent about 90 minutes Monday with Russian President Vladimir Putin, another leader whose fate seems intertwined with Obama’s in all the wrong ways. On opposing sides of many global issues, the U.S. and Russia are nonetheless trying to broker a deal to address the Syrian civil war and perhaps even partner militarily there.

“President Putin’s less colorful,” Obama said, comparing him with Duterte. “But typically the tone of our meetings is candid, blunt, businesslike.”

Dear Mr. Berko: The health care market has tanked because of potential health care reforms. I’ve got $106,000 to invest, long term, in a portfolio of pharmaceutical stocks. I want to be conservative, but I would also like to get some decent dividend income, if possible. Could you recommend 10 or so pharmaceuticals that pay good dividends and have good potential for long-term gains? – LS, Minneapolis Dear LS: The political rhetoric of both major-party presidential candidates, who are calling for lower health care costs and drug prices, has hurt valuations in the health care sector, causing many issues to trade below their higher valuations. The health care industry has been and continues to be richly supportive of both major political parties, and ongoing health care politics will continue to generate volatility in equity prices. Opposition to higher health care costs is primarily political showmanship and BS until the November elections. So there is a very low probability of any health care reforms passing into law.

Over the years, the billions gifted to our trusted congressmen by the American Medical Association, the American Hospital Association, drug companies, health insurers, equipment manufacturers, the biotechnology industry et al. guarantee that no

meaningful reforms will become law.

We have the best Congress that money can buy, which is why I remain bullish on the health care industry.

The same political promises are made every four years, and health care executives understand this process.

Therefore, management continues to redeploy capital for mergers and acquisitions. And low interest rates continue to encourage mergers and acquisitions because money has become so cheap. Now management can focus on more muscular pricing and vigorous profit potential via scale purchasing, cost reduction, key strategies and inversion. Include the demands from Obamacare and health care spending will continue its geometric growth.

I believe there’s uncommon potential in health care funds such as Fidelity Select Biotechnology (FBIOX-$184), which traded at $295 a year ago, and T. Rowe Price Health Sciences (PRHSX-$64.33), which traded at $85 last year. I also like the BlackRock Health Sciences Trust (BME-$34.74) and the Invesco Global Health Care Fund (GTHCX-$25.99), which traded

at $47 and $39, respectively, last year.

FBIOX, PRHSX and GTHCX are noload funds, whereas BME is a closedend fund, and you can buy 300, 500 or 1,000 shares for an $8 commission at Fidelity.

I also recommend AstraZeneca (AZN-$33.15), yielding 4.5 percent, and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK-$43.36), with a 5 percent yield, more than double that of the Standard & Poor’s 500 index. I’ve discussed both issues in previous columns. Both have lost important patent protection, but both have sufficient earnings to maintain their dividends, and both have fecund pipelines, which should ensure continued growth in revenues, earnings and dividends. And in this market, I don’t mind getting an average 4.75 percent dividend while waiting for those two to turn around. I’d also add Pfizer (PFE-$35) to your health care portfolio. I recommended it last year.

Its $1.20 dividend, yielding 3.4 percent, has tripled since 2000.

Then add Sanofi (SNY-$38.70), a $38 billion global drug company with a $1.66 dividend, yielding 4.3 percent.

Wall Street estimates a five-year growth rate of 7.1 percent. Credit Suisse, Value Line and S&P Capital IQ have “buy” ratings on SNY, with a three-year projected price target of $62. AbbVie (ABBV-$64.21), yielding

3.4 percent, is a $26 billion-revenue research-based pharmaceutical company that was a spinoff by Abbott Laboratories in 2013. ABBV expects to earn $5 a share this year and $6 next year, and Credit Suisse, Morningstar, Argus Financial Services, Thomson Reuters, S&P Capital IQ and Market Edge have a “buy” rating, with a three- to five-year target price of $140 to $150.

However, Societe Generale has a “sell” recommendation on ABBV, and Morgan Stanley recently downgraded the stock. Novartis AG (NVS-$79.82) is a financially strong $49 billion-revenue pharmaceutical with a $2.85 dividend, yielding 3.5 percent. Earnings should be up significantly in 2016, to $4.20 from $3.25. Its new drug Entresto, approved to treat chronic heart failure, has blockbuster potential, earning perhaps $4 billion or more in annual sales. The Street has a threeto five-year $125 target price. Credit Suisse, Thomson Reuters and Market Edge have “buy” signals on NVS, while Morgan Stanley regards NVS as a “sell.”

VNA Health Care receives recognition for providing high-quality patient care VNA Health Care received recognition from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration for its achievements in providing high-quality, comprehensive patient health care.

VNA will receive $175,717 in funds that are designated by HRSA to expand current quality improvement systems and infrastructure, and improve primary care service delivery. The funding community health centers receive is directly related to the level of quality demonstrated, according to a news release. VNA’s funding was awarded for demonstrated improvements in one or more clinical measures, having high clinical performance compared with other health centers, and for maintaining

primary care medical home status.

“This award highlights VNA’s efforts to provide the highest-quality care and to increase access to health care in the communities we serve,” Linnea Windel, President & CEO of VNA Health Care, said in the news release. “In the past year we have expanded our services and opened new clinics in Romeoville and Joliet.”

VNA Health Care provides health care to more than 61,000 women, men and children living primarily in Will, DuPage and Kane counties.

Town Center Bank to celebrate 10th anniversary FRANKFORT – Town Center Bank first opened its doors in 2006 with a mission of serving the New Lenox, Mokena and Frankfort area communities. The bank is hosting a 10th anniversary celebration from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There was no way that class could be topped. Yet the Class of 2015 – Mike Alstott, Terry Gannon, Mark Grant, Tippy Madarik and Liz Tortorello-Nelson – came close to matching the inaugural group.

earned as people stands out even more.

“These people gave back, they have cared about others all through their lives,” said Dan Sharp, the JCA athletic director, football coach and master of ceremonies for the induction. “We are honoring them for what they accomplished on the field and the way they have represented our school and community.”

Sharp spoke on behalf of Carroll, the school’s all-time leader in wins among boys basketball coaches with a 193-80 record. The Hilltoppers, then DeLaSalle, won three national Catho-

lic championships under his guidance.

Carroll also coached football. In 1926, his team went 5-0 and shut out every opponent. His Hilltoppers beat Mount Carmel, 12-0, in 1928 in the inaugural meeting between the two football powers.

Allie Quigley camp a hit for area girls

dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – More than 60 young girls from the Joliet area will be talking for a long time about how they spent their Labor Day morning.

Chicago Sky guard and Joliet Catholic graduate Allie Quigley, the twotime reigning WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year, ran her annual Allie Quigley Labor Day Basketball Camp on Monday in the Joliet Central fieldhouse.

Quigley was ably assisted by her three siblings – Samantha, Ryan and Jake – along with Joliet Catholic girls coach Nick Leonard, Joliet West coach John Placher and Joliet Central coach Laura Brumfiel. They combined their talents to teach the girls lots of basketball in a three-hour period that flew by.

“This is nice to have this in the fieldhouse with all the baskets and courts,” Quigley said. “Thanks to Joliet Central for hosting. It’s a good group of girls. It’s exciting to be here with them.”

Quigley signed scores of autographs and posed with the girls for nearly as many pictures. The campers all received T-shirts, and awards were presented to those who showed particularly well one way or another.

When the camp wrapped up, Quigley emphasized to the girls the value of trying various athletic endeavors while they are young.

“When you find you really love a certain sport, then stick with it,” she said. “You don’t always have to have a team to work on your game, either.

You can find a partner, a wall, a basketball hoop ... you always can find a way to be outside, have fun and make yourself better.”

Quigley, 30, has been described as a gym rat who did not give up when the deck seemed stacked against her. Her early years in the WNBA were an upand-down ride, but she stuck with it.

Since joining the Sky before the 2013 season, she has come into her own. Now she is a key contributor off the bench for a team making a push for prime position in the WNBA playoffs.

With six games remaining in the regular season, the Sky (15-13) holds the fourth seed for the eight-team playoffs. If the playoffs were starting now, Chicago would host the winner of a first-round game in a one-game battle for a semifinal berth.

“As long as we keep winning here, we’re in good shape to get the 4-spot,” Quigley said. “We had a good chance to work on some things during the five weeks we were off, and Elena (Delle

Donne) came back from the Olympics and obviously has been playing great.”

The Olympics, of course, were the reason for the long break in the WNBA season.

“It did feel weird to be off that long and only practicing, but now we’re back into a routine,” Quigley said.

The Sky, who begin a three-game road trip Wednesday night at Washington, have won four straight since returning from the break. They were beginning to right the ship just before the break.

“We were right there earlier in the season, but we had a lot of those fivepoint losses,” Quigley said. “We were missing something, and it seems like we found it now. We have to keep it going.”

Quigley has appeared in all 28 Sky games and is averaging 16.6 minutes, 9.3 points, 0.9 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 0.6 steals. She is shooting .477 from the floor, .393 from 3-point range and .900 from the free throw line.

“I’m trying to be aggressive and effective regardless of the minutes I play,” she said. “As long as we are winning, it is all good.

“What is making us good right now is we have everyone contributing. We need 12 players to make this thing work. At this level, everyone has talent. The teams that win are the teams that play best together.”

Delle Donne was among the athletes who posed for “ESPN Magazine: The Body Issue” this year. Asked whether her teammates on the closeknit Sky teased Delle Donne about it, Quigley said no.

“She looked great in the magazine,” Quigley said. “All that hard work she put in to get her body where it is, it’s great to show that. I think it’s more cool than anything that she did that.”

Quigley always has worked hard to keep her body in top condition. A

couple of weeks after this season ends, she will be returning to Turkey to play another professional season with Fenerbahce SK. Last season, she was with that team and not far from the site where a bombing occurred in Istanbul.

“I was considering not going back after that,” Quigley said. “But certain areas there do feel safe. If you heed the warnings, things will be OK. And, if I change my mind, I always can come back home.”

Last season, Quigley received the MVP award in a Turkish Cup tournament that her team won. Her team was the bronze medalist in Euroleague play.

Now, she is working at helping the Sky get in the best position possible for the WNBA playoffs. She was a huge contributor in 2014 as the Sky reached the WNBA Finals.

She knows a little something about what it takes for a young woman to reach her full potential. One of her main objectives Monday to impart that knowledge to 60-some up-andcoming girls basketball players.

The video presentation on Mudron, an all-state football player and state heavyweight wrestling champion, included former Joliet Catholic football player and local attorney Mike Hansen saying that Mudron “still is the very best high school football player the Joliet area ever has produced.”

Mudron, who played at Notre Dame and is a Joliet city councilman, told a humorous story about how he almost did not allow Sharp to notify him of his Hall of Champions selection.

“I got the message that Sharp called,” Mudron said. “Insurance, no, I don’t have his personal insurance.

Maybe political? No, that’s not it.

“Then the Catholic came out. It’s got to be another fundraiser that he is hitting me up for. When I finally did get back to him, it came as a great surprise.”

Mudron concluded his talk with “Happy Birthday.” His grandkids joined him on the stage as they sang the birthday song to one of them.

Before moving on to Parker, Sharp said, “The most intimidating thing ever had to be that picture of Pat (Mudron) in a singlet that was outside the entrance to the gym at the old Catholic High.”

MARK PARKER (’76)

Parker’s lifelong friend and former classmate Don Strle described him as a humble person, yet the most fierce competitor. “He loved to lead a team, he loved to compete and he was at his best when the game was on the line,” Strle said. “The only thing I’m better at is I can outfish him eight days a week. Beyond that, he’s the best.”

Parker was the quarterback on the Hilltoppers’ first state championship football team, the point guard in basketball and catcher in baseball. After a year stay at St. Francis, he transferred to Coe College, where his number is retired, and played all three sports there. He became a teacher, coach and administrator at the high school level in Iowa.

He talked about some former and current Hall of Champions inductees.

“Two years ago I was fortunate enough to be here,” Parker said “It obviously was special that coach Gillespie was here, to be able to come and hear his voice.

“Terry Gannon, I hope all of you had the opportunity to see the ‘30 For 30’ on the North Carolina State national championship team. Terry

went well beyond basketball experiences.

“People laugh now about opportunities for young ladies, but they wouldn’t be there without people like Jane Condon. And coach Mudron, you were larger than life that year you were part of our Joliet Catholic football team as an assistant coach when you didn’t have to be.

“Jack (Perconte), you accomplished what you could and you did it the right way. And coach Sullivan, what an absolute joy it was to be on your first team at USF. Now with Gordie (Gillespie) gone, you are our torch bearer.”

Parker said he was recognized in football because he was the quarterback, “but I played one position. I was always reminded by my father (the late Ken Parker) that you remember to recognize teammates. Our ’75 team was not extremely talented. We were just a great group of people who worked hard and liked to compete.”

When the last of the inductions concluded, Parker asked for a few minutes more and talked about some of his favorites scenes from his favorite sports movies. His points included cherishing the opportunity to put on the uniform, and never think it is about what you do individually.

“We are all still part of the team no matter what we are doing,” he said.

“Make sure you do what you can to make it better for everyone you come in contact with ... I still can hear

PAT SULLIVAN (’61)

The video introduction of Sullivan, the University of St. Francis legend, was priceless, His cohorts at USF, athletic director Dave Laketa and longtime assistant coach Jack Hermanski, spoke highly of him, and did his five children – the kids he said he used to take on vacation to places exotic like Crest Hill and Lockport.

But it was Pat’s brother Danny who was the comedian with his “nod, smile and thumbs-up” message.

Sullivan joked that he did not belong in the company of four great athletes such as Condon, Mudron, Parker and Perconte.

“When Tom Denny, who played for me at St Francis, came here to coach, he went through the Joliet Catholic record book,” Sullivan said. “He said, ‘Coach, you know you’re in the record book? You committed the fourth-most fouls in Joliet Catholic history.’ ” In one high school game, Sullivan was facing a rugged pair of brothers who elbowed him in the head multiple times. “Jim Gannon was our coach and after the game, he said, ‘Sullivan, you play so much better when you don’t know where you are.’ ” Sullivan traveled extensively for 10 years working with McGregor Sports and consistently came in contact with big-name coaches. He finished with a thought that the Joliet Catholic family echoes.

“When I got home to Joliet, I knew the best coach in America was right here – Gordie Gillespie,” Sullivan said.

Perconte, the first of many Joliet Catholic major leaguers, played seven seasons in the big leagues, carried a .270 career batting average and stole 31 bases in 33 attempts one season.

He is the author of multiple books on baseball and operates the www.baseballcoachingtips.net web site. His baseball academy is in Naperville.

Local coach Joe Rodeghero, his high school teammate, said Perconte “was a grinder to me. He was a selfmade person. He made me a better player just by playing with him.”

Lee Capista, also a former JCA coach and former Perconte teammate, said, “I always enjoyed hitting second behind you because I never had to bunt. Everybody knew you were going to steal second.”

“This is so cool,” Perconte said.

“If I could borrow from an old Harry Chapin song, old friends, they mean much more to me than the new friends ’cause they can see where you are and they know where you’ve been.

“Gordie Gillespie was the greatest.

I grew up on the east side of Joliet idolizing guys like Pat Sullivan and Pat Mudron. They were my heroes.”

the ceremony when she was inducted in 2014 because she was involved in the WNBA playoffs as a member of the Chicago Sky. She was there this time – and received recognition from Sharp.

“It was inspiring to be there,” Quigley said Monday after her Labor Day girls basketball camp concluded at Joliet Central. “All of the inductees were great former players but even better people. And Jane was such a pioneer for myself and all other girls who have played in school athletics.”

Condon’s No 1 talent in the athletic arena was her versatility. She earned varsity letters at St. Francis Academy in volleyball, basketball, gymnastics, track and field and tennis. During their first two years of basketball, Condon led the Angels to a 27-0 record. In 1974, she averaged 18 points and finished third in the conference and fifth in district in the discus, qualifying for state.

She drove in 59 runs as a senior in the first softball season at St. Francis.

She became the first female to receive an athletic scholarship to Lewis, and she earned 11 letters there. She was inducted in the Lewis Hall of Fame in 1984.

“I am delighted to be recognized with such a deserving group,” Condon said. “Growing up in the ’60s and ’70s, it was extremely more difficult for girls to compete than it is today.

Title IX in 1972 was landmark legislation. My life would have been vastly different if not for having the opportunity to play athletics in high school and college.”

Starters Long, Porter, Fuller return to practice

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com LAKE FOREST – The Bears are as healthy as they have been since the start of training camp, and it has come at the perfect time.

With six days to go before the season opener against the Texans, offensive guard Kyle Long, defensive backs Tracy Porter, Kyle Fuller, Bryce Callahan and Deon Bush and receiver Deonte Thompson all participated in the portion of practice open to the media.

Coach John Fox didn’t have to give out an injury report Monday, so we’ll learn more about those players’ statuses for Week 1 after Wednesday’s practice, but the team’s top two corners seem ready to return.

“Yeah, no question,” Porter said when asked whether he would play Sunday. The veteran corner has been out since suffering a concussion Aug. 27 against the Chiefs.

“I remember the hit,” Porter said of the collision with teammate Harold Jones-Quartey. “I remember what happened. I remembered the formation. The tight end ran a skinny post. The thing is, I saw Harold coming in and I tried to adjust myself, but I didn’t do it quick enough.”

Fuller, who has been out after a knee scope, said he has a “sense of relief” after trying to play through the pain during training camp and that it’s his goal to be playing Sunday.

Facing a Texans receiving corps that includes DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller, it’s paramount for the Bears to be healthy at corner.

“This delays it six weeks and allows him to continue to train. And you guys have seen him out there working every day.

Upton homers in 11th inn. to lift the Tigers

CHICAGO – Justin Upton hit a three-run home run in the 11th inning to lift the Detroit Tigers over the White Sox, 5-3, on Monday for their 11th win in 14 games.

Miguel Cabrera homered twice and had four hits off Chris Sale, and Justin Verlander struck out 11 in seven innings as the Tigers stayed tied with Baltimore for the second AL wild card.

Chris Beck (1-1) issued consecutive two-out walks to Victor Martinez and J.D. Martinez before Upton crushed a 1-2 fastball to right for his 21st home run. It was his second game-winning homer in two days after connecting in the eighth inning Sunday against Kansas City.

Cabrera became the fourth player to reach 300 homers with the Tigers with a liner to right in the first. He secured his fifth multihomer game of the season with a drive to left-center in the third, his 31st of the season.

Cabrera also singled and doubled for his sixth four-hit game of the season. He had all but two of the hits allowed by Sale, who struck out eight and walked none in eight innings.

Alex Wilson (2-0) gave up one hit

in the 10th and Francisco Rodriguez gave up a run in the 11th before securing his 39th save. He moved past John Franco for fourth on the career saves list with 425.

Verlander allowed eight hits and saw his chance for a 15th win dashed when former Tigers catcher Alex Avila tied it with a solo homer in the seventh.

It marked the second Verlander-Sale matchup in a week. Neither ace factored in the decision in Detroit’s 3-2 win Wednesday, either. The Sox again failed to support Sale and fell to 2-8 in his last 10 starts.

Trainer’s room: Sox: Manager Robin Ventura said shutting down struggling RHP James Shields (back) is possible. Shields has allowed a major league high-tying 35 homers. “He doesn’t come in and hide and not talk to guys and stay to himself,” Ventura said. “He’s still working hard.”

Nice catch: The Sox’s Cabrera robbed Cameron Maybin of a leadoff home run with a leaping grab at the left-field wall.

MILWAUKEE – With a short turnaround after an extra-inning game, the Cubs needed major league ERA leader Kyle Hendricks to provide a strong start Monday afternoon.

Hendricks delivered six strong innings and the Cubs broke away late to beat the Milwaukee Brewers, 7-2.

“After like really awkward games, he has really picked us up,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “That’s just who he is. He normally gets you deeply into the game.”

“That’s who he is, man. You pretty much have an idea what you’re going to get when he goes out there,” he said.

Pinch hitter Chris Coghlan came through with a go-ahead single in a two-run seventh. He stayed in the game and got a two-run single in a four-run eighth for the NL Central leaders.

Hendricks (14-7) gave up one run – on Chris Carter’s 33rd homer – and five hits in six innings, and left with a 2.07 ERA. He is 5-0 with a 1.30 ERA over his last seven starts.

The right-hander has allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his last

19 starts, which is the longest streak by any pitcher in the majors this season.

“After that at-bat (Carter home run), I did a much better job kind of pitching inside, just to give myself some more room glove-side,” Hendricks said.

It was 1-all in the seventh when Zach Davies (10-7) retired the first two batters. Montero then doubled and scored on the single by Coghlan, who took second on the throw.

Tommy La Stella followed with an infield single that second baseman Scooter Gennett misplayed into the outfield, allowing Coghlan to score.

“If we don’t do it right out of the gate, then our belief is always that we’ll do it before it’s over,” Coghlan said. “I don’t think we ever lose that.

And that’s why we’re so confident.

And that’s why it’s tough to shut us out and to keep us down.”

Davies allowed two earned runs on six hits over 62/3 innings.

The Cubs tied the game in the sixth on a two-out, broken-bat single by Jorge Soler.

Mother of 6, writer, student loses 106 pounds

The (Bloomington) Pantagraph PAXTON, Ill. – Nicole O’Dell did incline walking pushups on bleachers outside Paxton-Buckley-Loda High School as her 7-year-old triplets did regular pushups beside her.

Then they ran up and down the bleacher stairs several times before one of her triplets asked “Mom, can we run around the track?”

“That is the greatest reward of all this,” O’Dell, 43, said of her embracing a healthier lifestyle.

“Natalie (O’Dell’s 18-year-old daughter) had health issues but she saw how my choices were benefiting me” so she improved her nutrition and exercise and lost weight, O’Dell said.

“Now, I’m seeing these guys get off to a good start,” she said of triplets Logan, Megan and Ryleigh. Then they scampered down the bleachers and ran around the track.

In the past year since O’Dell began her healthier eating and exercise, she has lost 106 pounds. She weighed 150 pounds as she ran around the track with her children late afternoon on Aug. 3.

A Paxton mother of six children – ages 24, 18, 15 and the 7-year-old triplets – O’Dell is training for two triathlons during the next month as she works full time as marketing manager at Human Kinetics, a Champaign-based publisher of books for the fitness industry and as she continues her graduate studies.

“I’m 10 weeks from finishing my master’s degree in English from Southern New Hampshire University,” she said.

She maintains a website – www. fitandbusylife.com – to hold herself accountable to her fitness goals while helping other busy parents to reach their goals through her posting of stories, recipes and tips.

“I’m honest about my struggles,” she said.

Writing is not new to her. She has written 27 books – some Christian young adult fiction books and some nonfiction resources for parents.

“I think she’s amazing. She’s super mom,” daughter Emily, 15, said between color guard practice and play rehearsal. “I have no clue how she does it.”

“It’s incredible,” Natalie said before she ran off to work.

Natalie will be a freshman at Illinois State University in Normal later this month. Oldest child Erik is serving overseas in the Air Force.

“It’s really good because when you exercise your blood pumps,” Logan said.

“It makes you healthy,” Ryleigh said.

All three children love to exercise with their mom, including in a July 5K race in Paxton.

“I feel really healthy and sweaty,” Ryleigh said after exercising on Aug. 3.

All this is paramount to O’Dell, who said fitness is her third life priority.

Her first are faith and family.

“My faith is a big part of this,” she said. “God made a day 24 hours long and, if you can’t get everything you need to get done in a day, maybe you’re doing something you’re not supposed to be doing.”

“I was busy before I started doing this” nutrition and exercise program, she said. “It’s just a shift in priorities.”

“I used to think that it would be selfish to carve time out for exercise,” she said. “Now I think it would be selfish for me to stop.”

That’s because her healthy eating and exercise give her energy, peace of mind and personal pride that help her as a mother, employee, graduate student, person of faith and friend.

She is helping to organize a walking group through her church and invites friends to join her in exercise.

“I used to do social time, getting together with friends for coffee,” she said. “Now, my exercise time is my social time. If friends want to get togeth-

er, I invite them to jump on board.”

O’Dell already was busy as a mother, employee, writer and student a year ago when she decided that she needed to do something about her weight and sluggishness. She weighed 256 pounds and felt drained.

“I knew that I was letting myself suffer physically,” she said. While she exercised from time to time, she’d stop when she didn’t achieve desired results or when she became injured.

“The missing component was diet,” O’Dell said. She bought and ate a lot of convenience foods.

“I thought, ‘The best thing I can give my kids is a healthy mom.’ I realized that I’m not too busy to take time to exercise.”

O’Dell knew she was allergic and sensitive to many foods but she would eat them anyway, sometimes resulting in hives, stomach distress, burning throat, inflammation and weight gain.

Beginning a year ago and over time, she determined those foods (including wheat, eggs, corn, nuts, seeds, fish and sugar) and gradually eliminated them from her diet.

She replaced them with Greek yogurt, fruit, mixed greens, vegetables and lean meats.

“I don’t feel deprived,” she said.

“What helps me is to plan (meals) ahead.”

Healthy eating was quickly accompanied by exercise. O’Dell started by doing cardio work at a 24-hour fitness center in Paxton and at work.

“We’re lucky to have a fitness facility at work and I took advantage of it,”

she said. Gradually, she ramped up her cardio workouts and added pushups.

In January, Natalie was motivated by her mother’s success to begin her own healthy eating and exercise routine.

“I had unattended food allergies and once I got gluten and sugar out of my diet, everything else fell into place,” she said. Soon, she added cardio work and weight lifting at night after work.

Natalie felt better, her school work improved, her skin cleared up and she lost 45 pounds.

“Now, it’s routine,” Natalie said of the family’s healthier lifestyle.

O’Dell and her friend, Stacy Morse, decided to begin training for a triathlon.

During most weeks, O’Dell exercises six days a week, generally beginning at 5 a.m. – before her children are awake – to minimize the impact on her family.

Her Monday workout consists of running, pushups, planks, triceps dips and burpees at the school track.

During the other five days, she fits in two runs, two bike rides and two swimming workouts at the Urbana Aquatics Center. Distances vary.

In the spring, she competed in a Naperville sprint triathlon and swam a half mile, biked 13.1 miles and ran 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) in 1 hour and 53 minutes.

“It was awesome,” she said of her feelings afterward. “It was quite an emotional moment.”

Now, she and Morse are training for a sprint triathlon in Chicago on Aug. 28 and an Olympic-distance triathlon in Litchfield on Sept. 11. The Olympic distance is a 1-mile swim, 25-mile bike ride and 10-kilometer run.

O’Dell admitted what she’s doing isn’t easy so she tries not to get anxious about it.

“The biggest thing for me is focusing on making the next right choice,” she said.

But she enjoys what she’s doing.

“I get invigorated. It’s a huge reward to see how much all of this has change my life.”

Her next fitness goal may be a half Ironman – 1.5-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride and 13.1-mile run – in a year.

Meanwhile, she wants to continue to grow as a mother and writer.

“The message of my story is you can be fit in a busy life,” O’Dell said. “Make good choices and put one foot in front of the other. Your body and mind will follow.”

“You can do anything you set your heart to.”

MORRIS – Dr. Aamair “TJ” Tajuddin, a full-time pediatrician, has joined the new Coal City Healthcare Center of Morris Hospital located at 4 E. North St. Dr. Tajuddin begins Dr. Aamair seeing patients Sept. 13. “TJ” Tajuddin His schedule includes evening and weekend hours.

As a pediatrician, Dr. Tajuddin provides care for patients ages newborn through 17. His focus is prevention and management of health in infants, children and teens, including monitoring of growth and development, illness management, nutritional counseling, immunizations and physical fitness.

Tajuddin has a special interest in

newborn care, asthma, ADHD and weight management.

Born and raised in Lombard, Tajuddin attended medical school at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Stratford, New Jersey.

He completed a pediatrics residency at Loyola University Medical Center.

He is certified by the American Heart Association in Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation and Basic Life Support, and is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

JOLIET – The Will County Health Department has been named a Gold Fit-Friendly Worksite by the American Heart Association based upon outstanding workplace health. The annual award recognizes exceptional activities that promote health and well-being for employees.

The Fit-Friendly Worksite awards are given annually to recognize positive outcomes in three pre-specified criteria such as behavior change, cost saving or return on investment.

According to the AMA website, this program offers evidence-based tools

to help companies maximize their current employee health programs.

Sue Olenek, executive director of the health department, said the committee has sponsored a variety of activities, such as adopting a vending machine policy to offer healthy options, offering Lunch and Learn seminars that teach healthy eating habits, a weight-loss competition, numerous employee walking events, and other fun events that engage employees and their families in healthy behaviors.

Silver Cross Hospital awarded for quality care for stroke patients Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox NEW LENOX – Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Silver Plus Quality Achievement Award with Target: Stroke Honor Roll.

The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment and success ensuring that stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence.

To qualify for the Target: Stroke Honor Roll, hospitals must meet quality measures developed to re-

duce the time between the patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clot-buster tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke.

If given intravenously in the first three hours after the start of stroke symptoms, tPA has been shown to significantly reduce the effects of stroke and lessen the chance of permanent disability.

to offer Prepared Childbirth classes

NEW LENOX – Silver Cross Hospital will offer a two-part weekend prepared childbirth class from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sept. 10 and Sept. 17 and a one-part prepared childbirth class from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 24.

Classes will be held at Silver Cross Hospital, Pavilion A, Conference Center, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox.

Participants will receive instruction from a registered nurse on breathing, relaxation and floor exercise techniques. She also will review the labor,

delivery, recovery and postpartum processes. A tour of the birthing unit is included.

Cost is $80 a couple. There is no charge for patients under the care of an OB/GYN with the Aunt Martha’s Joliet Community Health Center or the Will County Community Health Center.

‘Feel good’ foods reduce anxiety Dear Dr. K: I suffer from anxiety but would rather not take medication. I already exercise and practice relaxation therapy.

Could dietary changes help further quell my worries?

Dear Reader: To help answer your question, I turned to my colleague Dr. Uma Naidoo. She is a psychiatrist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital and a professional chef. She noted the relationship between food, mood and anxiety is garnering more and more attention.

When thinking about dietary strategies to help relieve anxiety, start with the basics. That means eating a balanced diet, drinking enough water, and limiting or avoiding alcohol and caffeine.

But there’s a lot more. Many other dietary considerations also can help relieve anxiety. For example, complex carbohydrates are metabolized more slowly and therefore help maintain a more even blood sugar level.

Why is that important? When blood sugar levels swing from high to low, the heart begins to beat faster and more forcefully.

The hands can start trembling. People start to sweat. All these physical changes often produce anxiety. Anxiety, in turn, makes all of these changes more prominent – leading to more anxiety, and a vicious circle.

So, maintaining a more even blood sugar level creates a calmer feeling. The takehome? Choose whole grains, vegetables and fruits over highly refined or processed foods to help keep blood sugar – and mood – more stable.

When you eat also is important. Don’t skip meals. Doing so may result in a drop in blood sugar that causes you to feel jittery, worsening underlying anxiety.

Specific foods and nutrients can reduce anxiety. They spur the release of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopa-

These “feel good” foods are a safe and easy first step in managing anxiety. They include: • Foods naturally rich in magnesium, including spinach, Swiss chard, legumes, nuts, seeds and whole grains.

• Foods rich in zinc, such as oysters, cashews, liver, beef and egg yolks.

• Foods, like fatty fish, that contain omega-3 fatty acid.

• Foods rich in B vitamins, such as avocado and almonds.

Anxiety also may be linked with lower levels of antioxidants in the body. It stands to reason, then, that enhancing your diet with foods rich in antioxidants may help ease the symptoms of anxiety. Foods containing high levels of antioxidants include: • Beans: dried small red, pinto, black, red kidney • Fruits: apples, prunes, sweet cherries, plums, black plums • Berries: blackberries, strawberries, cranberries, raspberries, blueberries • Nuts: walnuts, pecans • Vegetables: artichokes, kale, spinach, beets, broccoli • Spices: turmeric and ginger.

have been married to my soul mate for 25 years.

We get along great – she’s my best friend and a good mother to our three kids.

(She takes care of my mom who lives with us, too.) The only problem is, she loves to sleep.

She will do anything for us except wake up a few hours early without being mad at the world.

She gets our kids off to school with no problem, but then returns to bed. I run a small construction company and need someone to answer the phones and do secretary stuff. Our books are a mess, the house is decent, but she won’t let me hire a part-time secretary.

She gets up at noon and spends the rest of the day “catching up.” It’s driving a wedge in our marriage. My friends and their wives do things together on weekends, but not mine. She sleeps until 2 or 3 p.m. on the weekends.

I work a lot of Saturdays, and when I go to customers’ homes and see the wife outside gardening, it breaks my heart. I have threatened to leave, and she works on it for a couple of days and then falls back into the same old habits.

Help. – Hurting Husband In California Dear Husband: Not everyone requires the same amount of sleep to function. Some folks may be fine with five hours, but others need eight, nine or even 10. If your wife needs more than that, there may be an underlying problem of some kind she should discuss with her doctor.

In marriage, there needs to be compromise.

If you are experiencing stress because you don’t have enough help in your business, then you need to hire someone because your wife already is doing all she can taking care of three kids and your mother. And you shouldn’t need her permission.

Dear Abby: At a pool party recently, I complimented another woman on her “good figure” (she was wearing a bikini and looked great in it), but I was told later by a different woman who had been there how “hurtful” my compliment had been to everyone else present because I complimented only the bikini-wearing woman. I felt coerced into apologizing to the second woman for not offering a compliment of some kind to everyone else at the party – which seems artificial and unnecessary (actually stupid) to me.
