YMCA – Joliet The Joliet YMCA was founded in April 1882 and, like other chapters, promoted health and welfare based on Christian principles. In March 1888, G. Julian Barnes was hired as the architect, and construction began on the first building, on the northwest corner of Clinton and Ottawa streets.

In February 1902, the board of directors passed a motion to close the YMCA and sell the building. The YMCA officially ended in Joliet with this measure. By 1926, the local Joliet community strongly supported the re-establishment of the YMCA. Wishing to have a downtown location, community members began a successful fundraising campaign to raise the needed money – nearly $500,000 – to cover the land and construction costs of a new facility.

Completed in 1928, the seven-story building,on the southwest corner of Webster and Ottawa streets, was designed by the D.H. Burnham & Co. architectural firm.

The building has a contrasting red brick and limestone façade with corner quoins, banding, and water table accentuated with stone medallions, columns and capitals at entrances and wroughtiron railings at the lower windows.

All of the features are common elements of the Georgian Revival style. A Women’s Division annex was completed in the early 1950s.

Today, the building offers affordable rental homes for senior citizens.

Joliet community music event and fundraiser marks its 12th year

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – For those who see the light, it is sometimes best to do so from the shade.

Tonya Chandler was among the first to arrive Saturday for Gospel Fest, the Labor Day weekend community festival and sacred music showcase for Joliet’s southeast side held outside the Harvey Brooks Foundation on McDonough Street.

Despite pleasant temperatures, the asphalt still got hot under the bright sunlight. Chandler had set up her own chair just to the side of the stage, which was shaded by several trees.

“This is just until it cools off and the music gets going. Then I’m going to move to my spot right in the middle (of the audience) and stay there the whole night,” Chandler said.

Chandler said the “fellowship, the way people come together” has been Gospel Fest’s most lasting effect. The festival was founded in 2004 by the late Tony Ray, a radio host and music minister.

Proceeds from the event will go toward services provided by the Harvey Brooks Foundation, which aids low-income and underserved families in the city. Some of those programs include a preschool program, after-school tutoring and organized activities such as karate and music. The foundation also offers life skills and job training programs, as well as summer youth employment.

“The community participation has grown every year,” said Tempie Bates, executive director of the Harvey Brooks Foundation. “This (has become) an end-of-the-summer event people look forward to. They can celebrate what they’ve accomplished this summer and prepare themselves for what to do this fall.”

Besides a full slate of musicians and prayer service, the festival had an inflatable bounce feature and slide, food vendors, dance workshops, karate demonstrations and caricatures. The YMCA and Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center also had information about health and community services. Bates said several book bags of school supplies would be given away, and awards were presented to minority business owners who have been serving Joliet

Offering some after-school assistance Salvation Army of Joliet gives area students homework help, life skills Know more

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Salvation Army of Joliet & Will County is offering area children homework assistance, support and fun through its Youth Enrichment after-school program.

The program began Aug. 22 and will run from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday until Dec. 16. The nonprofit organization offers help with homework, provides snacks and offers life skills and recreational activities.

“Basically, they come here right after school, and we offer homework assistance and a safer environment,” said Kevin Nolen, the Salvation Army’s program coordinator.

The Youth Enrichment program is housed at the Salvation Army’s Joliet Corps Community Center along with several other programs, including sports and recreation, music classes, adult enrichment, food pantry and more.

Nolen said the program mostly serves students on the East Side of Joliet, including those who attend Edna Keith Elementary School and Washington Junior High and Academy.

The program has 20 kids signed up who range from first- to eighth-graders, he said. The program is filled to capacity, he said, but the staff is compiling a waiting list for others who are interested.

dez said the children who are part of the Youth Enrichment program need a lot of intentional, one-on-one tutoring and he hopes the program fills that gap.

He said the Salvation Army tries to develop connections with teachers and

principals to be more involved.

One byproduct of the program is that it gives youths positive role models and, for boys, a good male role model, he said.

“They crave a lot of attention, a lot of love and healthy connection,” Faundez said.

He said the staff will make sure the children complete their homework but also show them that they have their support.

“That’s a big deal,” he said.

Another issue the program is aiming to address is family wellness so the families the children are growing up in are healthy, he said.

“We struggle to have parent participation on our end,” Faundez said.

According to the Salvation Army’s website for the program, the organization encourages parents to be partners in their child’s education to work together to meet their learning needs.

Parents are required to bring in their child’s report cards.

Boy Scouts launches ‘Blast into Scouting’ campaign

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Boy Scouts of America is inviting families across Will, Grundy and Kankakee counties to register for Scouting by or on Sept. 15 at an elementary school near them.

If they do, they’ll receive a free model rocket they’ll get to launch at events through the region weeks later, according to a news release from the Scouts.

It’s part of the “Blast into Scouting” campaign aimed at introducing families to Cub Scouts, which is open to boys in first through fifth grade.

In Cub Scouts, boys learn leadership and life skills while participating in activities such as building pinewood derby cars, assembling robots, enjoying the outdoors and helpings others through community service.

“It enhances the school curriculum. We kind of teach kids – they just don’t know they’re learning,” said Ted

He also said Cub Scouts is a family organization where youths spend time with their parents in the outdoors.

“That’s a positive thing, too,” Karns said.

Boy Scouts serves more than 4,300 people in Will, Grundy and Kankakee counties.

Hundreds of Boy Scouts volunteers will be in local elementary schools from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 15 to answer ques-

tions, register new members and hand out free model rockets with an invitation to launch them. It costs $33 to join Scouting for 16 months.

“We’ve been doing it forever,” he said.

Karns said the Blast into Scouting campaign is being supported by the United Way of Will County.

Mike Hennessy, executive director of United Way of Will County, wrote in an email that the nonprofit organization is proud to fund the program to help youths in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

“We commend the Boy Scouts Rainbow Council for beginning this new program,” Hennessy wrote.

Jerome Veal attends Gospel Fest every year, but has moved out of spending all his time in the audience. Veal played piano for Samuel Hogan Productions on Saturday afternoon and sang with his church choir Sunday morning.

“This is a great atmosphere,” he

said. “Everybody can hear [gospel music], and it might touch somebody, reach somebody in a place where they really need it.

“That’s why I prefer sacred music to secular music,” Veal said.

without ever having to say a word,” Ken Jr. said in an email. “He made sure your plate was always full, and your glass was never empty.”

When Ken Sr.’s children were young, he was a frequent volunteer at St. Bede Catholic Church in Chicago, especially at the church’s summer festivals, Kim said. In his later years and while living in Minooka, Ken Sr. had hoped to become more involved in St. Mary’s Parish in Minooka, but cancer cut that desire short.

Ken Sr. was 69 when he died Dec. 3, 2015. But he will be remembered as a strong man who quietly prevailed, even while looking out for the rights of others.

“He was extremely generous and kind,” Ken Jr. said. “I remember when we played football. He always made sure everyone was included. He always rooted for the underdogs and made sure they were involved. He was always sensitive to all the kids. He always took care of people.”

Yet the tolls and trials didn’t let up for Ken Sr., especially as he neared retirement. His company experienced wage cuts and moved services out of the country, Ken Jr. said. Ken Sr. went from day shift back to the night shift 20 years into his career, Ken Jr. added.

“Nothing ever came easy for him,” Ken Jr. said, “but he never complained.

He always got back up and made things better for his family.”

On the home front, Ken Sr. remained the core of every activity. A simple Sunday phone call would end with a, “Hey, let’s cook out!”

“He was always so glad to see us, to have us over,” Ken Jr. said.

MINOOKA – Ken Dryier Sr. of Minooka epitomizes the American dream.

But he fought hard his entire life to attain it.

According to his son, Ken Dryier Jr. of Frankfort, Ken Sr. married his high school sweetheart, Kathy, and then spent 49 years working with her to build a family legacy.

Ken Sr. supported every activity of his two children and three granddaughters from birth onward. He coached his son’s sports teams and attended every practice, game and open house of his three granddaughters, ages 10, 6 and 3 – even though Ken Sr. often worked a midnight shift.

“I was in chorus and musicals,” said his daughter, Kim Dryier, of Naperville. “He never missed a recital – he and my mom even attended the dress rehearsals. He never missed anything.

He was always there, cheering you on.”

A worker at a steel mill, Ken Sr. often worked two and three jobs – delivering pizza and stocking grocery store shelves at night – to pay for his children

to attend college. Ken knew how to make each moment in a day count.

“He just found time to do everything,” Ken Jr. said. “Everyone made jokes about how he slept two hours a day. The guy was unbelievable.”

Ken Jr. said his father grew up on the South Side of Chicago in humble circumstances and within a small Polish family. Ken Sr.’s mother died when he was 16, leaving behind her husband, as well as Ken and his brother and sister.

“It was a real hardship for the family,” Kim said. “He sacrificed a lot to make sure Kenny and I didn’t have the struggles he had.”

Even though Kim often heard her friends say, “I wish my dad was more like your dad,” she didn’t realize until her college years that her father’s brand of parental support was unusual.

“We thought it was just natural,” Kim said. “We thought it was normal.”

Although Ken Sr. enjoyed Chicago sports, at parties and events, he didn’t direct the conversation to them. He was the unassuming host, ensuring his guests’ comfort and pleasure.

Quietly and without fanfare, Minooka man attained the American dream

Achieving the rank of Eagle Scout is something Zack Kijowski always knew he wanted to do. He joined Tiger Cubs when he was little, moved on to Cub Scouts and advanced to Boy Scouts.

“I have been in Scouts my entire life,” he said.

At 17, Zack’s a senior at Minooka High School. He’ll age out of Boy Scouts in a few short weeks. In order to become an Eagle Scout, he needed to complete his Eagle Scout project by his 18th birthday.

The Eagle Scout project is the Boy Scouts’ most difficult advancement requirement, according to ScoutingMagazine.com. It gives the Scout an opportunity to plan, develop and give leadership to others.

Documentation is an important element of the project, and there has to be evidence of organized planning and leadership.

When Zack was searching for just the right project, his neighbor, Joann Maruszak, suggested that their neighborhood park needed a pergola that they could sit under.

Seneca Park in the Meadowlands in Channahon already had a stationary picnic table. Zack liked the idea of a pergola to benefit the neighborhood, so he decided to design and build a structure that would be constructed right over the picnic table.

In addition to Scouting, Zack plays football for Minooka High School and club lacrosse in the spring. He plans to attend the University of Iowa next year and is considering a major in biomedical engineering, where he could help design prosthetic limbs and medications that will make people’s lives easier.

With the project completed in time for his 18th birthday, Zack now is waiting for his paperwork to clear to officially become an Eagle Scout.

He plans to become an assistant scoutmaster and continue helping others.

“It’s just a huge accomplishment to say you are an Eagle Scout,” he said.

not only fundraising involved, but a lot of creative thinking to find ways to reduce costs.

In 2015, Zack first had to approach the Channahon Park District. After he received approval, he was put in touch with an architect through his aunt, who drew up the plans as a favor (creative thinking).

He solicited donations and sponsorships from local businesses, as well as from his family (more creativity).

In June, with plans in hand and funds raised, he and his dad, John Kijowski, broke ground at Seneca Park.

As the project progressed and the main frame was up, Zack reached out to other Scouts to help him with building, staining and landscaping.

A lot of younger Scouts also aspire to become an Eagle Scout one day, and the best way to learn is by watching and helping older Scouts, Zack said.

“I learned from others [Scouts]; I had others helping me learn the process,” he said.

The pergola now is up in Seneca Park for everyone in the community to enjoy. There were some obstacles to overcome along the way, but as

He was an avid fan of the Blackhawks and of the Green Bay Packers, of which he was a proud part owner. He enjoyed music, photography, walks in the woods and reading. He loved vacationing with his wife in Mexico and Marco Island. He cherished time spent attend-

CHICAGO – A federal lawsuit has raised questions about whether Illinois’ new Election Day voter registration rules are constitutional, a situation that could complicate how polling sites are run in November.

Illinois tested same-day registration in the 2014 governor’s race, with all election authorities required to offer it in at least one location. It was popular, with long lines on Election Night, particularly in Chicago. When lawmakers made same-day registration permanent the next year, they expanded it, ordering highly populated areas to make it available at all polls.

That change is at the heart of a federal lawsuit brought by Republicans, who argue it is an unfair and unequal system because voters in less populated and GOP-leaning areas don’t have equal access. They’re asking a judge to end all precinct-level Election Day registration, which would affect voters in 21 of 102 counties and five cities: Chicago, Aurora, Rockford, Bloomington and East St. Louis.

“It seemed obviously unfair to skew election results in this way,” said Jacob Huebert, an attorney with an organization representing a north-cen-

Off-duty officer grazed by bullet on Chicago street

CHICAGO – Authorities said a Chicago police officer is in good condition after being grazed by a bullet after work.

Chicago Police Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the officer was shot at from a car around 5 a.m.

Sunday.

The officer had finished his overnight shift and was driving when he noticed another vehicle speeding up behind him. The officer slowed to let the vehicle pass. The vehicle instead pulled alongside the officer’s car.

SPRINGFIELD – Olympic gold medalist Ryan Held has returned to the central Illinois YMCA where he got his start as a swimmer.

The State Journal-Register in Springfield reported that the 21-year-old Held got a warm welcome Saturday at the Springfield YMCA. More than 500 fans cheered Held celebrating his win last month at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

University of Illinois increasing salaries to avoid overtime

URBANA – The University of Illinois will spend $3 million in salary increases for about 400 postdoctoral research associates to avoid overtime charges the school otherwise would pay under a new federal rule.

Bruce Rauner’s foundation has donated to the group, and some in his administration previously worked there. Rauner’s spokeswoman didn’t return a request for comment.

Law professor Ann Lousin at John Marshall Law School in Chicago called it a “very good” constitutional case but with an “odd” twist as it seeks to end same-day registration at all polls instead of expanding it statewide.

“They don’t usually ask the court to take away the benefit from the other guy,” she said.

Dec. 1 means the annual salary threshold at which companies can deny overtime pay will be doubled from $23,660 to nearly $47,500.

The News-Gazette reported Sunday that interim Provost Edward Feser told faculty it would be impractical and costly to track researchers’ hours and pay them overtime. He said other universities are also adopting the new minimum salary for researchers.

Campus spokeswoman Robin Kaler said the average pay of research associates is $39,600.

Kaler said the money for the raises will come from existing research grants, in some cases.

Gang leader gets 12½ years in prison on heroin charges

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A man accused by federal authorities of being the Michigan leader

of a Chicago-based gang has been sentenced to 12½ years in prison after being convicted of heroin distribution and conspiracy.

The Grand Rapids Press reported that assistant U.S. attorneys in court documents described Kenton Taylor as the highest-ranking member of the Black P Stone Nation gang in Michigan. They said the gang used religion to “gloss over” its actual mission of trafficking in drugs and guns.

Taylor and three others were charged with conspiracy to distribute more than 100 grams of heroin and heroin trafficking.

The others took plea deals. In addition to the prison sentence, U.S. District Judge Janet Neff on Wednesday also ordered Taylor to serve eight years on supervised release after being released from prison.

OMAHA, Neb. – The parents of the toddler who was killed by an alligator at Walt Disney World in Florida say they will always remember their sweet little boy.

Melissa and Matt Graves spoke to a group of several hundred people gathered at a high school football stadium Saturday to remember Lane Graves on what would have been his third birthday, The Omaha World-Herald reported.

Lane died June 14 after an alligator pulled him into a lagoon at Disney’s upscale Grand Floridian Resort. He was gathering sand for a sand castle when the alligator bit his head.

The final report on his death said the boy died from a crushing bite and drowning and that his dad reached into the alligator’s mouth to try to save the boy.

After Lane’s death, Disney made changes to restrict visitor contact with alligators on the property. Fences and other barriers were built around some of the lakes, and “No Fishing” signs were installed around waterfront areas. Disney World also limited fishing to excursions.

Turkey coop of Burt’s Bees co-founder to be saved

PARKMAN, Maine – The converted turkey coop that a co-founder of Burt’s Bees once called home in Maine is going to be saved and displayed at the company’s headquarters in North Carolina.

Burt’s Bees has bought the structure where Burt Shavitz once lived and has moved it to Durham, where it’s going on display this fall.

The 300-square-foot shelter with no running water is where Shavitz lived before finding fame through Burt’s Bees. He ended up back there when his house was damaged by fire in February 2015.

G-20 summit opens amid sluggish growth, trade

HANGZHOU, China – The American and Chinese presidents are calling on major economies to defend free trade at a summit held as sluggish growth and disputes over steel and other imports fuel demands in the United States and Europe to protect local industry.

Opening the Group of 20 meeting, Chinese President Xi Jinping appealed Sunday for governments to resist pressure to raise trade barriers. At the same time, a European leader highlighted the conflicts looming over the summit by calling for action on China’s bloated steel industry.

China made trade a theme of the gathering in this lakeside city southwest of Shanghai even as it faces complaints a flood of low-cost steel exports are threatening U.S. and European jobs, fueling demands for trade curbs.

“We should build an open world economy,” Xi said before an audience that included U.S. President Barack Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, British Prime Minister Theresa May and leaders from Japan, South Korea, India and other governments.

Governments should “avoid taking new protectionist measures” and “take effective action to promote trade growth,” Xi said.

Xi called for innovation to spur growth and reforms to global financial and economic management. He appealed for cooperation in taxes and fighting corruption, and for measures to “improve the ability of the world economy to resist risks.”

China hopes its status as this year’s G-20

leader will increase its influence in global economic management. Chinese officials want the G-20, created to respond to the 2008 financial crisis, to take on a longer-term regulatory role.

Other leaders have called for “inclusive growth” - a reference to efforts to spread the benefits of closer global integration to millions of people who have been left behind by wrenching change.

Obama stressed that theme at a separate news conference with May. “We must all work together to spur economic growth, to boost free trade and build a fairer economy that truly works for all,” said Obama.

Also Sunday, the president of the European Union’s governing body, the European Commission, called for action on China’s bloated steel industry.

The G-20 meeting “must urgently find a solution” to excess steel production, said JeanClaude Juncker. He called on Beijing to accept a monitoring mechanism for overproduction that Beijing’s trading partners blame for low prices and job losses.

China, the world’s biggest steel producer, has committed to reducing its production capacity by 100 to 150 million tons by 2020, a pledge Xi repeated Saturday.

“Free trade must be fair trade,” Juncker said at a news conference with Donald Tusk, president of the European Council.

Another prominent issue at the summit is G-20 member Britain’s June vote to leave the 28-nation EU, seen by some analysts as the first in a wave of moves by other nations to retreat from free trade.

Hermine spins away from East Coast, batters shore with waves

The Associated Press NORFOLK, Va. – Hermine spun away from the East Coast on Sunday, removing the threat of heavy rain but maintaining enough power to whip up dangerous waves and rip currents and keep beaches off-limits to disappointed swimmers and surfers during the Labor Day weekend.

As it churned hundreds of miles off shore in the Atlantic Ocean, the system picked up strength, and forecasters said it could regain hurricane force later as it travels up the coast. It was expected to stall over the water before weakening again to a tropical storm by Tuesday.

“It’s just going to meander for a few days,” said Dennis Feltgen of the National Hurricane Center, explaining that Hermine was unlikely to make landfall again but was positioned to batter the coast with wind and waves.

Governors all along the Eastern Seaboard announced emergency preparations. Tropical storm watches and warnings were in effect from Virginia to Massachusetts, with special concern focused on New Jersey and Delaware,

“Don’t be lulled by the nice weather,” Christie said, referring to the bright sunny skies along the Jersey Shore on Sunday. “Don’t think that nothing is going to happen, because something is going to happen.”

New York City planned to close its beaches Monday because of rip currents, and the ban could extend into Tuesday, depending on weather conditions, officials said.

Long Island authorities urged people to evacuate the summer getaway known as Fire Island to avoid any storm surge and coastal flooding.

Emergency officials warned that anyone who stays will not be able to leave after ferries shut down Sunday evening.

Hermine rose up over the Gulf of Mexico and hit Florida on Friday as a Category 1 hurricane before weakening to a tropical storm across Georgia. It has caused two deaths, inflicted widespread property damage and knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of people from Florida to Virginia.

VATICAN CITY – Elevating the “saint of the gutters” to one of the Catholic Church’s highest honors, Pope Francis on Sunday praised Mother Teresa for her radical dedication to society’s outcasts and her courage in shaming world leaders for the “crimes of poverty they themselves created.”

An estimated 120,000 people filled St. Peter’s Square for the canonization ceremony, less than half the number who turned out for her 2003 beatification. It was nevertheless the highlight of Francis’ Holy Year of Mercy and quite possibly one of the defining moments of his mercy-focused papacy.

Francis has been dedicated to ministering to society’s most marginal, from prostitutes to prisoners, refugees to the homeless. In that way, while the canonization of “St. Teresa of Kolkata” was a celebration of her life and work, it was also something of an affirmation of Francis’ own papal priorities, which have earned him praise and criticism alike.

“Let us carry her smile in our hearts and give it to those whom we meet along our journey, especially those who suffer,” Francis said in his homily.

Born Agnes Gonxhe Bojaxhiu on Aug. 26, 1910, Teresa came to India in

1929 as a sister of the Loreto order. In 1946, she received what she described as a “call within a call” to found a new order dedicated to caring for the most unloved and unwanted, the “poorest of the poor” in the slums of her adopted city, Kolkata.

The Missionaries of Charity order went on to become one of the most wellknown in the world, with more than 4,000 sisters in their trademark bluetrimmed white saris doing as Teresa instructed: “small things with great love.”

At the order’s Mother House in Kolkata, hundreds of people watched the Mass on TV and clapped with joy when Francis declared her a saint.

They gathered around Teresa’s tomb which was decorated with flowers, a single candle and a photo of the wrinkled saint.

“I am so proud to be from Kolkata,” said Sanjay Sarkar, a high school student on hand for the celebration.

“Mother Teresa belonged to Kolkata, and she has been declared a saint.”

For Francis, Teresa put into action his ideal of the church as a “field hospital” for those suffering both material and spiritual poverty, living on the physical and existential peripheries of society.

Saints hope to live up to preseason top ranking

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Jeff Barker had a good feeling about how his University of St. Francis men’s cross country team would fare in his first season, 2012, and it went on to win an NAIA title.

He has similar high hopes about this year’s squad, and those were only enhanced when the Fighting Saints were voted as the top team in the NAIA Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll. They received 511 points, which was 12 more than three-time defending national champion Oklahoma City University.

USF has finished fourth or better at three of the past four NAIA finals, including last season when it took fourth place. With most of the starting seven back from that group, prospects look encouraging for another successful season and run for a national championship.

But despite the high expectations, Barker knows better than to take anything for granted.

“The recognition is nice,” Barker said. “When a lot of our seniors were freshmen and ran, they were No. 1 the whole year and we got fourth that year, so we have experience with that. When

you find out that you’re No. 1, it’s exciting. But we have a team saying, ‘win the day,’ so we want to do everything right each day to set us up for the next day. Our really big focus is on the process of getting to the end of the year feeling great.”

Having won a title in his first year, the USF coach has been working to get back to that level.

“Since we recruited Cam Knudsen’s class, it’s been a process to get back to the point where we could win,” Barker said. “It’s been my goal to get them as much experience as possible. When you’re young and go to the national meet, you’re just figuring things out.

We have seven or eight guys who’ve been All-Americans on the track in a relay or in cross country, so now we come in experienced. The process of learning to get here has been beneficial.

“The guys who won in 2012 had tons of experience at nationals and they understood. But now it’s about teaching them how to win, and that’s a different road. We have guys who run 80 to 90 miles a week and guys who we have to monitor the mileage that they do. The big thing with them is learning how to balance their training and their indi-

vidual stuff, but bring them together as a team so that on the days we need to work hard, we can work hard together.”

Thinking about the future, but focused on the present, Barker likes this team’s attitude.

“We have 26 guys on our team and only seven are going to run at nationals,” Barker said. “We want to make sure that our young guys develop since we only lose two seniors that are in our top group. When we came in for team camp, it was pretty clear what their expectations are. It’s a special group because when they were younger it was a little more playful but you can see the passion in their eyes. It’s still fun, but there’s no more joking around.”

Junior Brian Blaylock earned All-American honors by placing 13th at last year’s NAIA meet.

“It’s a very big honor to be recognized,” Blaylock said. “Obviously, we have a lot of work to do to maintain that, but just to see that in the beginning of the year kind of gives you a little bit more motivation to do it.

“So far everybody looks like they’re running really well and are working hard, so I think it will be a great season once we see everyone racing. I saw a

pretty good amount of improvement from our guys in track and it looks like everyone trained hard over the summer. Everybody works hard and is working for each other and not just for themselves, which is nice to see.”

Knudsen, a junior and Minooka graduate, placed 36th a year ago. Others who are back from that starting seven are seniors Joey Santillo (Minooka) and Jake Fitzgerald (Plainfield South), junior John Principato (Plainfield Central) and sophomore Gabe Ceballos (Minooka). Knudsen, Santillo and Principato also were All-Americans during the track season.

“We’re really looking to build off of last year’s success,” Knudsen said. “It was a good year, but we’re hungry and we still want more. With the group of guys that we have, especially in the top 10, we have a really solid group of guys.

“We had a lot of guys really do well in track and we’ll build off of that since we all had good summers and we’re already having a good start of the year.

Everyone is motivated to do their best and we all have each others backs. The number one ranking puts a target on our backs but it motivates us. We want to show everyone that we’re the best and prove it at nationals.”

“We’re ready for the playoffs,” Fletcher said. “We just have to keep swinging the bats and pitching the way that we need to and we’ll have a good chance against Evansville, who’s a good team. We have a lot of interesting guys and we all get along and have good team chemistry. We like showing up to the ballpark every day and playing hard and for each other.

“The thing about our lineup is that we’re dangerous one through nine.

We’re getting a lot of innings out of our starting pitching and our bullpen is able to put some good innings together and hold the game for us. We have a very versatile group of guys who can play a number of different positions.

So if anything happens to any one of us, it’s next man up.”

The Slammers bullpen has experienced its woes during the season but one of the keys to the team reaching the playoffs is the improved showings of relievers like Kevin Simmons.

“Our bullpen is starting to come together really good,” Simmons said.

“We’re all starting to connect and help each other figure out our roles. This team had a lot of chemistry to begin with, even before the season started, and it’s built ever since then. So we go into the playoffs with a lot of momentum and playing good baseball.

“I like our chemistry. We all have a good connection, whether it’s in the clubhouse listening to music or hanging out after the games. We don’t just come here together and then leave and split. We’re together off the field and

on the field. It’s just a great team.”

Joliet has received several big lifts from new additions this season. Zarley Zalewski joined the squad after graduating from Kent State and has been one more big bat in the lineup.

“We’re playing well and it’s always a great feeling to get to the playoffs,” Zalewski said. “They were good before I got here and it’s good that I’ve been able to help get us to the playoffs.

We’ve been a tough out, one through nine, and that doesn’t happen very often and it’s tough to beat a team like that.

“If the pitchers throw well and keep us in games, we’re a good offense that can strike at any moment and put up big innings, so the pitching staff has been just as huge as the offense. I feel like we’re a close-knit group. We hang out with each other so we have a close bond.”

A key moment for the squad came when Lake Erie manager Chris Mongiardo was relieved of his duties and immediately rejoined Isom, who he worked with at Lake Erie. The addition of a coach with managerial experience who had worked with the manager has been huge.

“You always feel good with Liam O’Sullivan going in game one,” Mongiardo said. “We’re going to need good starts to win this series. We’ve got a great lineup out there so if we give them a good start and a good showing out of the pen, then the position players will respond.

“This team gets on a roll and can reel off five or six in a row, and the other team doesn’t even know what hit them. So hopefully that’s what happens.”

AURORA – Joliet Catholic Academy’s girls volleyball team closed out a busy week by taking first place at the West Aurora Invitational.

After capturing two-set wins over Streamwood, Plainfield South and Saint Ignatius in pool play, the Angels (8-5-1) defeated the hosts, 25-23, 26-24 in the semifinals before beating Plainfield East, 25-12, 25-14 in the finals.

Taylor Zurliene led JCA with 32 kills, 26 digs, five aces and a 2.31 serve-receive rating while Emily Holbrook had 22 kills, 38 digs and a 2.32 serve-receive rating. Sarah Nahas handed out 94 assists and added 29 digs, 25 service points and five aces.

Emily Jones had 21 kills and 24 blocks while Morgan Leuszler added 18 kills, 12 blocks, 38 service points

and five aces. Emmie Naal had 12 kills, 23 digs and five aces, and Meg Sliwa contributed 35 digs, 22 service points and eight aces.

“With the exception of an incredibly slow start in one match, we played a very solid tournament all the way around,” said JCA coach Christine Scheibe, who has a career record of 498-142-10 in her 17th season. “Our passing was the best it has been all season, and that allowed us to really run the type of offense we believe we can have. It was a very tough week with eight matches in five days, but the girls continued to dig deep and bring the best out of themselves.”

CHICAGO – Jason Heyward tied it with a single in the ninth inning and his liner to left-center in the 13th won it as the Cubs beat the San Francisco Giants, 3-2, on Sunday to take three of four games in a possible playoff preview.

Anthony Rizzo led off the 13th with a single off Matt Reynolds (0-1) and went to second on Ben Zobrist’s sacrifice. Addison Russell, who had three hits, was walked intentionally before Heyward drove in his third run of the game.

Trevor Cahill (4-4) worked a perfect inning in a series in which all four games were decided by one run.

The Cubs were staring at a secondstraight loss when Russell led off the ninth with a double against Santiago Casilla. He went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Heyward’s single up the middle to hand Casilla his seventh blown save.

Each team had chances earlier in extra innings. Cubs closer Aroldis Chapman worked two scoreless innings, striking out Brandon Belt on a 102 mph fastball with two on to end the 11th.

The Giants’ Cory Gearrin struck out Russell looking on a questionable call with a runner on second to end the 10th.

The Giants appeared on their way to the win in regulation despite managing two hits thanks to seven strong innings from Johnny Cueto and a perfectly executed suicide squeeze.

Eduardo Nunez doubled in the fifth, stole third then broke for home as Ehire Adrianza put down a soft bunt in front of the mound that forced John Lackey to throw to first and snapped a 1-all tie.

In his first start since Aug. 14 because of a shoulder strain, Lackey trailed 1-0 after 31/2 innings despite not allowing a hit.

Heyward was charged with a two-base error in the second when he couldn’t make a running catch of Hunter Pence’s fly to right-center.

Pence scored the unearned run on Nunez’s groundout.

After the Cubs tied it when Heyward’s single scored Anthony Rizzo in the fourth, the Giants got their first hit an inning later on Nunez’s one-out liner to the gap.

Lackey, on a pitch count, was lifted after 76 pitches, one earned run and one hit.

Sixth man: The Cubs will stick with a six starters through another turn in the rotation, with LHP Mike Montgomery getting the ball Wednesday at Milwaukee.

The Associated Press MINNEAPOLIS – Jose Abreu hit two three-run homers and drove in a career-best seven runs, and the White Sox used Tim Anderson’s two-run double in the 12th inning to beat the Minnesota Twins, 13-11, on Sunday Abreu, Anderson and Melky Cabrera had three hits apiece, helping the Sox overcome four homers for Minnesota. The teams combined for 18 homers while splitting the four-game series.

Juan Minaya (1-0) earned his first major league win. He pitched a scoreless 11th but walked the first two batters in the 12th. Tommy Kahnle then came in and earned his third career save, retiring Eddie Rosario with the bases loaded for the final out.

Byron Buxton hit his first career grand slam for Minnesota, and Brian Dozier, Miguel Sano and John Ryan Murphy also went deep. The Twins hit 11 homers in the four-game set.

With one out and runners on second and third, Anderson doubled to deep left against Pat Dean (1-6). It was the rookie’s 18th double of the year.

Abreu opened the scoring with a three-run shot in the first. He added an RBI single in the fifth and another three-run drive in the seventh, trimming Minnesota’s lead to 9-7.

Abreu is batting .370 with 11 homers and 30 RBIs in his past 31 games.

The Sox took the lead on a two-run single by Avisail Garcia in the ninth off Brandon Kintzler, who blew his second save in 15 chances.

But Minnesota came back in the bottom half. Pinch runner Logan Schafer scored on pinch hitter Kurt Suzuki’s double to the left-field wall, handing David Robertson his seventh blown save in 40 chances.

Buxton had three hits, and Dozier connected for his 35th homer. Sano hit his 22nd and Murphy added his first for the Twins after being recalled a day earlier.

Sources:Bears cut veteran kicker Gould WIRE REPORTS It’s Robbie Gould and then everybody else. Even the most famous Bears kicker of all time, Kevin Butler of 1985 Bears fame, sees it that way.

When Gould was on the verge of breaking Butler’s all-time points record with the Bears last season, Butler showered Gould with compliments. In doing so, Butler even mentioned Gould in the same breath as Bears legend Walter Payton.

“He’s representing one of the best franchises in professional sports and certainly in football,” Butler said in an interview with the Sun-Times in October 2015.

“And when you can have your name at the top of any list that has Walter Payton on it, you’ve got something special.”

On Sunday, “something special” came to an abrupt and unceremonious end. League sources said the Bears have informed Gould of his release.

OREGON – The U.S. Postal Service celebrated four birds that brighten cold winter days by dedicating the Songbirds in Snow Forever stamps at the American Philatelic Society’s Stampshow 2016 in Portland, Oregon.

One of the birds, the northern cardinal, is the state bird for Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia.

The stamps are available in booklets of 20, with each of the four stamp designs repeated five times. They feature the golden-crowned kinglet (Regulus satrapa), the cedar waxwing (Bombycilla cedrorum), the north-

ern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) and the red-breasted nuthatch (Sitta canadensis). Illustrator Robert Giusti painted the original designs in acrylic on canvas board, depicting each bird perched on a snow-covered branch.

Joining postal service official Cliff Rucker in dedicating the stamps was American Philatelic Society Executive Director Scott English. Help doctor find time to treat Dear Dr. K: I like my doctor and I trust his judgment, but I don’t feel he really listens to me or explains things. What can I do, besides look for another doctor?

Dear Reader: Like every doctor, I am a patient as well as a doctor. I think I can see things from both perspectives. Let me respond first as a patient.

If you like and trust your doctor, I’d recommend you put him to the test before looking for another. At your next visit, gently but firmly make certain things clear: Suppose he says something you don’t understand. Tell him you’re sorry, but you don’t understand. Ask him to explain it again.

Suppose he recommends a particular diagnostic test or treatment. If you’re concerned about the risk, the cost or something else, tell him that, and explain why. If he mentions risks, be sure he tells you how likely the risks are.

(Don’t expect a precise answer, but ask for a rough estimate: one in 10, one in 100, one in 1,000?)

Suppose, after hearing the answer, you don’t like the doctor’s recommended test or treatment. Then ask him whether there are any other options you both should consider.

Suppose you’re dealing with a potentially serious illness, or a test or treatment that has serious risks – a diagnosis of cancer, or a major operation, for example.

If you’re not sure you agree with the option your doctor has suggested, you always can seek a second opinion. This is not something to do lightly: At least initially, you won’t have the same level of trust for another physician, since you won’t know him or her as well as you know your doctor.

In that case, I’d start looking for another doctor.

Now let me respond as a doctor. One of the hardest things for us is finding the time to do everything we need to do during a patient visit, given the time we have. That includes time for listening and explaining. You can help your doctor by making your time with him as efficient as possible.

If you have a chronic illness, remember the questions your doctor asks you at most visits. Be ready to answer the same questions at this visit.

For example, if you have diabetes, think about whether you have symptoms that could indicate heart problems, such as chest pain or feeling as though you might pass out.

If you tend to forget what the doctor said at the visit, consider bringing someone with you – a spouse, adult child or friend. That person can help make sure certain questions get asked. He or she also can take notes while you speak with your doctor.

The time you spend with your doctor is precious to both of you, so come prepared to make the most of your visit.

DEAR ABBY I am a retired librarian who Jeanne lives in Texas. I Phillips am what around here is called “Anglo,” meaning white and not Hispanic. I speak four languages, with varying degrees of proficiency.

Recently, a friend who is Hispanic told me if an Anglo speaks Spanish to a Hispanic person, it’s considered an insult because it implies the Hispanic person is “too stupid” to learn English. I had never heard of this before, so I asked a retired college-level Spanish teacher who is also Anglo. She informed me Hispanic people use the language difference as a “boundary,” and my speaking Spanish to them was a violation of their boundaries.

It came as a complete shock. This happened more than a month ago, and I’m having a hard time dealing with it. I spent a lifetime developing language skills. I always considered speaking another language to be a sign of respect and friendship. Now I’m being told it’s insulting and intrusive? I can’t believe all Hispanic people feel this way, but I don’t know what to do with this information. What should I do? – In Shock In San Antonio Dear In Shock: After reading your letter, I polled a focus group of Spanish-speaking friends about it. Some said it didn’t bother them, but the majority explained the reaction may depend on how long the family has been in this country. If it has been several generations, the people you are addressing might identify more as English speakers than Spanish speakers, and consider your addressing them in Spanish to be condescending because it implies you don’t think they have learned English.

So the rule of thumb would be: Assume everyone speaks English; then if it turns out they don’t, use their language.

How could South get lucky in today’s six-heart contract after West leads the club queen?

In the auction, North’s two no-trump was the old-fashioned response showing a balanced 13-15 points. (Nowadays, almost all pairs use the Jacoby Forcing Major-Suit Raise.) When South rebid three hearts to confirm at least a six-card suit, North had three choices: three no-trump with no interest in hearts, four hearts with support but no slam interest, or control-bid an ace to show a good hand for hearts. When North chose this last option, indicating his club ace, East made a lead-directing double. South then bid what he hoped he could make.

There seem to be two chances to make six hearts: trumps 2-2 or the diamond finesse working. However, if you peek at the diagram, you will notice that neither is happening. So, is South unlucky?

He has a third possibility. He wins with dummy’s club ace, ruffs a club in his hand, draws two rounds of trumps ending on the board, ruffs the last club, and plays off his spade winners. Then he exits with a trump.

Here, East must lead a diamond away from the queen, so the slam makes. But note that if East can safely play a spade or a club, declarer still has the diamond finesse available.
