VenuWorks goes to work as Rialto’s new manager

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – VenuWorks went to work Thursday, the first official day on the job for the third-party management company hired to run the Rialto Square Theatre.

In town and at the Rialto are Timothy Berry, the interim director of the Rialto, and John Siehl, chief operating officer for VenuWorks.

More members of the transition team are coming next week.

Berry was impressed by what he saw – at least visually.

“The Rialto theater is gaga,” Timothy Berry said. “I think it’s a beau- Berry tiful facility. It was described to me as a beautiful theater before I came here, but it exceeded my expectations.”

But looks aren’t everything.

It’s the Rialto’s financial struggles that prompted its board to contract with an outside management firm for the first time since the Will County Metropolitan Exposition Authority was created in 1978 to take over the previously privately owned theater.

The Rialto staff was put on part-time status last month so the theater could make payroll.

That continues, at least for now, Siehl said.

“We’re still assessing that exact situation,” he said. “They’re working a very flexible schedule. We appreciate that. They’re working from 22 to 25 hours a week.”

But hopes are high for this next chapter of the Rialto’s history.

Both Siehl and VenuWorks President Steve Peters said they have received a warm reception meeting with community and business

leaders the past two weeks.

“Everyone is very enthusiastic about the Rialto and what we bring there,” Peters said.

Peters said his biggest worry is that people will expect VenuWorks to immediately stage shows at the Rialto. VenuWorks expects to bring shows in the fourth quarter, but they are talking about two or three.

“It isn’t going to happen overnight,” Peters said.

Peters said the initial work at the Rialto “is all about assessment.”

Berry comes to the theater with a master’s degree in business administration. He has a background in management and event programming. He has managed venues in five different Midwestern cities, including Dodge City, Kansas, and Des Moines, Iowa.

But he is likely to be at the Rialto only through this year.

“I’m the interim director,” he said. “I’m the transition guy.”

VenuWorks expects to hire a permanent executive director in January.

Berry said he does believe the Rialto has a good future and not only because of its impressive looks.

“I think you’re seeing a trend away from the stadium shows to theaters like ours,” he said.

“I think the inventory for programming now is pretty good.”

The new crew said they have had a good response from promoters, who may see some stability now at the Rialto.

“There’s a lot of promoter interest in the Rialto. That’s the good thing,” Peters said. “Some of them were promoting there and stepped back because of the uncertainty of what was going to happen.”

Emergency food and shelter program funds now available in Grundy County SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – Grundy County has been awarded federal funds under the Emergency Food and Shelter Program from the Illinois State SetAside funds under the Illinois Department of Human Services.

Nonprofit organizations in Grundy County that provide emergency food and shelter to area residents are able to apply for funding. Submitting an application is not a guarantee that funds will be available, according to a news release from the United Way. The Grundy County EFSP Board was designated to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country.

The Grundy County EFSP Board will determine how the funds are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run

by local service agencies in the area. The local board, which is composed of representatives of many area entities, is responsible for recommending agencies to receive the funds and any additional money available under this phase of the program, according to the news release.

Under the grant’s terms, local agencies chosen to receive funds must: • Be private, voluntary nonprofits or units of government.

• Have an accounting system.

• Practice nondiscrimination.

• Have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs.

• And, if they are a private voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board.

LOCAL BRIEF Semi rollover blocks I-55 ramp in Romeoville

ROMEOVILLE – The southbound entrance to Interstate 55 at South Weber Road in Romeoville was closed Thursday after a semitrailer rolled over at the ramp.

The incident occurred about 5 p.m., according to Illinois State Police District 5 Sgt. Rick Zarate.

The semi was on South Weber Road entering southbound I-55, but it took the turn too sharply, causing the rollover, Zarate said.

No one was injured in the incident, he said.

The ramp reopened just before 8:30 p.m., according to Zarate.

Angels celebrate Olympic bronze medalist Kelly Murphy’s return

It was party time Thursday evening in the Joliet Catholic Academy Student Activity Center.

The ceremony between the sophomore and varsity volleyball games between the Angels and Hinsdale South honored JCA’s favorite daughter, Olympic bronze medalist Kelly Murphy.

With the medal draped around her neck, Murphy listened to the accolades from her adoring fans here at home.

She watched as current JCA players unveiled a banner made especially for her.

She posed for pictures. The Angels’ varsity and sophomore squads “said

Then the JCA coaching staff.

A couple members of the Hill Zone cheering section walked to the scorer’s table, where Murphy was standing. They wanted to be able to tell their friends – and their kids and grandkids some day – that they said hello to Kelly Murphy, and she said hi in return.

Bus drivers split in D-111 meeting comments

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Two bus drivers spoke out at the Thursday school board meeting for Minooka Community High School District 111 with different views of the situation that led to an Aug. 18 school bus staff strike.

David Findlay, a District 111 driver, apologized to parents and thanked the board and administration for their help and support in the last few weeks, after contract negotiations between the bus staff union, Teamsters Local 179, and Minooka Districts 111 and 201 broke down in early August.

“When this bomb dropped, I know

a lot of people were not happy, but the union never had a majority vote for this,” Findlay said after the meeting.

“I know a lot of drivers that are happy, and I think it is a very good part-time job.”

Findlay said he continued to drive for District 111 and also drove for District 201 during the strike because he feels the students are the top priority.

“I have been driving for 13 years, and I have never been more proud to have worked with such a great group of drivers,” he said of those who continued to drive despite the strike.

Sara Rogers, a bus driver for District 201, also spoke during the public comment portion of the meeting and

said working conditions had continually worsened over the past few years.

“I showed them a sign that was posted in 2014 that said they were discontinuing the summer bus cleaning program – I was appalled when they stopped that,” she said after the meeting. “We’ve had several new directors over the past few years, and they are putting the attention on the budgets in the wrong spot.”

She said the strike was a result of things getting out of hand because those in charge lack common sense.

Dave DiLorenzo, director of community relations for District 111, said the next mediation for the districts and union is scheduled for Sept. 9.

“It’s been great to see all the people in my hometown of Wilmington, in Joliet and here at JCA. I loved playing here.

Some of my best experiences in volleyball were here.”

Continued from page 3 “It feels great to be here,” said Murphy, a 2008 JCA graduate who was Gatorade National High School Player of the Year as a senior. “It’s been awhile since I’ve been back here.

“It’s been great to see all the people in my hometown of Wilmington, in Joliet and here at JCA. I loved playing here. Some of my best experiences in volleyball were here. It’s great to see the Hill Zone is just as rowdy as ever.”

Murphy said she is grateful that she has had the opportunity to bring some excitement to the current Angels and leave a positive legacy at the school.

“It’s kind of weird for me to come in and have people so excited,” she said.

“We’re all very excited,” said Murphy’s mom, Sandy, who played college volleyball at Illinois State, coached in Wilmington and in club ball around the Joliet area and teaches at Wesmere Elementary School in Plainfield.

“We’re very blessed for Kelly to receive this honor tonight. It’s very nice to have this opportunity.”

The Murphy family was at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro to cheer on Kelly and the U.S. That included Sandy, dad Scott and sisters Jennifer and Mary, both of whom also were volleyball standouts at JCA. Jennifer, in fact, was the only Murphy to win a state championship under Angels coach Christine Scheibe, and she won two of them.

“I still can’t wrap my head around being at the Olympics, seeing all those athletes perform at that level, and my sister is one of them,” Jennifer said.

“Words can’t describe what it was like down there. Volleyball is the No. 2

“The board is hopeful that the drivers want to negotiate as well,” he said.

“What makes this unique is there are two school districts being served.”

The District 111, District 201 and Teamsters Local 179 negotiation teams met Aug. 24, when the parties exchanged proposals on various issues.

The Teamsters suspended the strike that day, but also have indicated they might take legal action against the districts. The union already has filed an unfair-labor practice charge with the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board against District 201, which the district contends is baseless.

“It was an unbelievable reason for us to go to Rio,” Sandy said. “There are beautiful beaches there, it was wonderful, especially to be there under the umbrella of the Olympics.”

Kelly called the Olympic experience and winning a bronze medal “life changing. From the time you start playing volleyball, you dream of the Olympics, but it still does not feel real.

Then to be able to share it with family and friends, that made it so much better.”

The closeness of the U.S. team and their families made the setting perfect.

“I wasn’t nervous when Kelly was

out there,” Scott Murphy said. “I’m always real confident because she always has been that way. And what really made the experience was that she played with a good group of girls from good families. Most of us stayed together on the cruise ship.

“The team did their country proud.

Even in the (semifinal) loss to Serbia, they overcame a key injury and almost won. To me, that was a highlight.”

U.S. coach Karch Kiraly also earned Scott Murphy’s admiration.

“After the loss to Serbia, he was hurting, of course,” he said. “But he came out and addressed the parents and told us how much he appreciated the families. I thought that was classy.”

er Sheridan Kelly said Mary Murphy, who graduated in 2014 and is a sophomore setter at Western Michigan, sometimes talked about her sister to the other Angels in Scheibe’s program.

“It was an inspiration for us to play with Mary and learn about Kelly’s enthusiasm for being an Angel, what that means in terms of putting it all on the court every time out there,” she said.

Kelly Murphy never lost that drive.

“After we lost to Serbia, we talked about not getting to accomplish what we wanted,” she said. “But at the end of the day, it was all about pride, beating Netherlands and getting the medal. I was really proud of how our team fought for every point all the way through.

“It was an amazing experience. Rio and USA volleyball did a real good job.

Everything was just awesome.”

And there is more to come. Murphy, 26, will be leaving shortly to begin a professional season in China, and she will continue on with the U.S. national team.

Another Olympic Games in her future? “I hope so,” she smiled.

The JCA volleyball community and her family will be ready to rock with her.

Motorists also are on track to pay the lowest prices for the holiday weekend since 2004, according to the American Automobile Association.

In Illinois, gas prices ticked up slightly over the past month but should come down. As of Thursday morning, the average price for regular gas statewide was $2.33, about a 17-cent increase from a month ago.

gion, the BP facility in Whiting, Indiana, according to AAA. The issues at the refinery have since been resolved, AAA spokeswoman Beth Mosher said.

“We really expect prices to start coming back down,” she said.

Besides gas prices, drivers should be aware that the Will County Sheriff’s Office plans to have its officers do a traffic enforcement detail throughout Labor Day weekend, said Tom Budde, sheriff’s office deputy chief. He said the detail will work to reduce traffic violations, such as driving under the influence.

Called “Get Noticed,” the workshop will offer women networking opportunities, a panel featuring brand-crafting professionals and tools to help them succeed. The first Get Noticed workshop was held March 1 in Chicago, and the workshops are expanding to the western suburbs.

“We recognized there was a lot more women in the Chicagoland area we wanted to reach,” said Tania Haigh, founder and CEO of Magnolia Insights.

The Get Noticed workshop will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. at Warehouse 109, 14903 S. Center St., No. 109. Tickets will be $5 to $65, according to the workshop’s Eventbrite website.

“This operation takes care of all the ins and outs of the facility,” said George Papoutsis, manager of process technology at the Lemont facility. “This is where it all happens.

We have people outside opening and closing valves, inspecting equipment.

We also have folks inside monitoring everything to make sure everything is in the optimal position. There are tens of thousands of monitoring points coming in from the field representing temperatures, pressures, flow rates, which position valves are in, etc.”

Kristin Mulvey, executive director of Resource Development at Joliet Junior College and executive director of the JJC Foundation, was one of the community partners present at Tuesday’s tour. Mulvey thanked Citgo for setting up an endowment providing financial assistance to students working toward technology degrees in operations engineering, process control instrumentation and industrial maintenance, as well as in electrical/electronic automated systems.

“Next month, we will be choosing the first round of scholarship recipients of the Citgo endowment,” Mulvey said.

Citgo also is involved with local

schools.

“We’re trying to establish a workforce to join us in the Citgo family,” said Pete Colarelli, the Lemont refinery’s government and public affairs manager. “Every year, we send somebody out to Old Quarry School in Lemont to spend the day with science classes and show them the refining process. It gets kids to think to themselves, ‘Hey, I could do this.’ ” Citgo makes mostly gasoline and diesel fuel. In fact, most of the gas pumped at any given gas station in the same geographic area likely is from the same source, no matter whose

“The thing that a lot of people don’t know is when you go to a gas station that isn’t Citgo, they still have our gas in it,” Papoutsis said. “It isn’t like only Citgo stations have Citgo gasoline. Citgo has other people’s gasoline, as well. It’s the additives packages that different facilities add that makes the difference. It makes sense – you wouldn’t want to ship the gasoline that’s close to this facility far away, and somebody that’s really far away bring their gasoline here. You just trade.”

LEMONT – If you think Citgo is all about putting gas in your car, think again.

Crude oil, and its derivatives, go into hundreds of products, from lipstick and nail polish remover to ink and paint.

Citgo officials shared that information and more about the company’s history and local community partnerships Tuesday when they opened up the refinery to a group of those partners in advance of the Lemont refinery’s 90th anniversary celebration Thursday.

Today, the Lemont facility produces 2.4 billion gallons of finished products each year. Its annual economic impact is $300 million, and the site provides 1,050 jobs. The refinery processes up to 167,000 barrels (42 gallons each) of oil a day, piped from Canada.

Lemont refinery Vice President James Cristman said the facility has its own fire department.

“We have full advanced life support, paramedics and ambulances,” Cristman said, noting that Citgo shares its fire services with local communities through mutual aid.

Patricia Moore, environmental analyst for the Lemont refinery, showed off the refinery’s 1,600-foot-long rain garden in front of its administration building, filled with native grasses, shrubs, trees and flowers, developed in 2011.

“The rain garden is watered through rain and snow melts,” Moore said, adding that it acts as a filter for pollution control. “In addition to being beautiful landscaping, it’s a natural habitat for wildlife – bees, butterflies, dragonflies and birds.”

Joliet man found guilty of fatal shooting during drug buy turned robbery The HERALD–NEWS A Joliet man has been convicted of shooting and killing an Aurora man during a drug deal turned armed robbery and murder, according to a news release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Dimitri Green-Hosey, 21, of the 1200 block of Fairchild Avenue, was convicted late Wednesday Dimitri by a Kane County jury of Green-Hosey first-degree murder and armed robbery in the January 2014 killing of 20-year-old Arin Williams of Aurora, the news release stated. The jury also found that Green-Hosey fired a gun in committing the crime.

The jury deliberated about six hours.

Kane County prosecutors presented evidence that at about 7:30 p.m. Jan. 13, 2014, Green-Hosey and his brother, co-defendant Jaquan Green-Hosey, met with Williams at a business in the 800 block of

North Lake Street in Aurora. The brothers had arranged to buy an ounce of marijuana from Williams, according to the news release, but instead decided to rob Williams of the drugs.

During the meeting, Jaquan Green-Hosey grabbed the marijuana and began to run, the news release stated, and Dimitri Green-Hosey shot Williams in the back of the Jaquan head, killing him.

The brothers then fled Green-Hosey to the east and threw the gun in the Fox River, according to the news release.

Jaquan Green-Hosey, 22, also of the 1200 block of Fairchild Avenue in Joliet, pleaded guilty Feb. 26 to first-degree murder, the news release stated. He awaits sentencing.

Judge Donald M. Tegeler Jr. set Dimitri Green-Hosey’s next court appearance for 1:30 p.m. Nov. 4, when motions and sentencing will take place.

Joliet gas station clerk shot in finger with assault rifle

aschier@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Police are seeking the public’s help after a gas station clerk was shot with an assault rifle early Thursday morning.

Police responded at 4:15 a.m. to the Citgo at 609 Ruby St. in Joliet after receiving a report of an attempted robbery, Joliet police Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said.

Two men had entered the gas station shop, one of them armed with the rifle, Gregory said, and when the store clerk refused to open the bullet-resistant attendant booth, the armed man started firing, trying to shoot off the lock on the booth. The gunfire penetrated the booth’s glass, striking the clerk’s finger, Gregory said.

Gregory said. Police dogs tried to track the suspects, but were unsuccessful. Officers recovered spent shell casings at the scene and are reviewing surveillance footage.

The clerk was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center for treatment of his injury, according to Gregory, and was released by midafternoon Thursday.

The man who fired the assault rifle was described as black, about 5 feet 11 inches tall and wearing a mask and dark clothes, Gregory said. The shooter’s accomplice was described as black, about 5 feet 7 inches tall and also wearing dark clothes.

Tom enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, good times, good friends and good music. He was a “Tough Guy” with a great Big Heart! He cherished the time spent creating those special moments in life with his wife, Kim, and son, Keith; where with them he made memories that will last forever. He will be forever in their hearts. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and was always ready to take on a new adventure. The crazier, the better.

He loved to cook, but not the cleanup, and was always ready to help plan the next family gathering. He had a love for hot rod cars and was a devoted NASCAR fan (regardless of Dale Jr. standings). He enjoyed gardening, camping, and had a unique style of fishing, which usually meant jumping into the water!

He enjoyed movies and watching football, baseball and game shows on TV. Tom was a very hard worker and a proud member of Sheet Metal Workers Local 265, for many years. He was quite the handy man, always working on another remodeling project and always ready to lend a hand to those in need of a little help. A member of Belmont AC Club in Joliet for over 20 years, where he volunteered as Little League baseball coach.

His love for his family and friends was truly unconditional and without him we will never be the same but his memories will live on for eternity. For Heaven’s Gates have opened, and another angel gets his wings.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Kim; his loving son, Keith; his parents, Jim and Susan Drwiega (mother), Thomas Kilcoyne Sr. (father), and Jim Moats (father-in-law and dear friend). Two brothers, Dennis (Diane) Kilcoyne and Jason Kilcoyne; two sisters, Michelle (nee Kilcoyne) Almazan and Christina (nee Streitmatter) Esparza; his stepbrother and stepsisters, Joe Otte, Corinna Otte and Angie Pederson; brother-in-law of, Jayme (Rebecca) Moats and Brent (Karen) Moats; numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Conrad W. Santoro, age 79, at rest Monday, Aug. 29, 2016, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center.

Born in Chicago, most recently of Tinley Park, the son of the late Anthony and Filomena Santoro. A veteran of the U.S. Army. Formerly employed as a Jeep driver where he met many good friends. He loved visiting with friends and family. An avid golfer, he loved the Bears and Blackhawks, but most of all he loved his children and grandchildren who will miss him deeply and will be remembered as the master joke teller.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS SPRINGFIELD – When he announced the creation of a nonprofit foundation designed to help upkeep the state’s fairgrounds, Gov. Bruce Rauner indicated last month it would be “all private money, all private management, all private control.” But records obtained by Lee Enterprises show that the administration and the Illinois Department of Agriculture played a large role in its formation.

“This is not going to be a government agency in any regard,” Rauner said in announcing the foundation on Agriculture Day at the fair.

ed that emails and other records released to the Springfield bureau of Lee Enterprises newspapers under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act show that state officials have been meeting since early June to discuss the foundation and played a role in assembling the organization’s board. State officials also put together a document detailing how the foundation would function and set the agenda for a conference call with board members days before the effort was publicly announced.

Grant Hammer, chief of staff for the Department of Agriculture, wrote in an email to board members Aug. 9, a week before the announcement.

According to the records, Hammer invited board members to an Aug. 11 conference call, and the agenda for that meeting, with “Illinois Department of Agriculture” printed at the top, begins with introductions from the governor’s office and the department.

Hammer did not comment because he said he is not authorized to speak to the media. Department spokeswoman Rebecca Clark didn’t respond immediately to a request for comment.

Chicago police: Homicides in August highest in 20 years

CHICAGO – Chicago saw its deadliest month in two decades in August, recording 90 homicides for the month, the city’s police department said Thursday.

The last time the city recorded 90 killings in a month was August 1996, according to Chicago Police Department data. Last month, there were 384 shooting incidents and 472 shooting victims, police said.

Chicago is on pace to have more than 700 homicides by the end of the year. The city hasn’t had more than 600 homicides in a year since 2003, and not more than 700 since 1998, according to records.

Ninety miles north of Chicago, police in Milwaukee said that city, which was roiled by violence recently after the police shooting of a black man, had its deadliest month for homicides in 25 years.

Milwaukee had 24 homicides in August, the highest total since July 1991. The police department said the city’s per capita rate was higher than Chicago’s in August.

Murder charges to be filed in girl’s 1991 death

MARKHAM – A 58-year-old man was to be charged Thursday with murder and kidnapping in the 1991 killing of a 14-year-old suburban Chicago girl, prosecutors said.

More than two years ago, five men reached a $40 million settlement with Illinois State Police after they were cleared of all charges in the death of Dixmoor teenager Cateresa Matthews.

The men, known as the “Dixmoor Five,” spent a decade or more in prison before DNA evidence pointed to Willie Randolph, not them, in Cateresa’s killing.

Police team up to stop holiday impaired driving

SPRINGFIELD – State and local law enforcement officials are warning motorists to “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” during the Labor Day weekend.

The Illinois Department of Transportation and the Illinois State Police are teaming up with nearly 200 local police agencies to reduce fatalities on the heavily traveled weekend.

Police officers will be conducting roadside-safety checks, patrolling for impaired drivers and setting up seat belt-enforcement zones.

Priscilla Tobias is director of the Transportation Department’s office of program development. She said fatal crashes on Illinois roads often occur late at night. Many involve drinking or failure to buckle safety belts.

Last year’s holiday weekend cost 13 people their lives. Three involved drivers with alcohol in their systems.

MIAMI – Florida has found the Zika virus in three groups of mosquitoes trapped in Miami Beach – the first time this has happened in the continental U.S. – and authorities are blaming a particular flower for making mosquito control much more difficult.

One of the traps that tested positive was at the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens, where bromeliads bloom. The plants trap standing water in their cylindrical centers, providing excellent breeding areas for mosquitoes amid their colorful flowers and pointy leaves.

“Everyone should know by now that bromeliads are really problematic for us. These are probably the No. 1 breeding area for mosquitoes,” Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez said.

Explosion at launch pad destroys rocket, satellite

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – A massive fireball and explosion erupted Thursday at SpaceX’s main launch pad, destroying a rocket as well as a satellite that Facebook was counting on to spread internet service in Africa.

There were no injuries. The pad had been cleared of workers before what was supposed to be a routine prelaunch rocket engine test.

SpaceX chief Elon Musk said the accident occurred while the rocket was being fueled and originated around the upper-stage oxygen tank.

“Cause still unknown,” Musk said via Twitter. “More soon.”

The explosion – heard and felt for miles around – dealt a severe blow to SpaceX, still scrambling to catch up with satellite deliveries following a launch accident last year. It’s also a setback for NASA, which has been relying on the private space company to keep the International Space Station stocked with supplies and, ultimately, astronauts.

Clinton Foundation gets high marks from group

WASHINGTON – A charity watchdog with an ongoing relationship with the Clinton Foundation gave the former first family’s nonprofit high marks Thursday, after an evaluation prompted by heightened interest in the organization.

The Clinton Foundation received four out of four stars – the highest rating that Charity Navigator gives after a close look at a charity’s finances. The rating is based on annual federal tax documents and an objective algorithm. It was not intended to reflect whether Hillary Clinton kept donors to her family’s foundation at appropriate arm’s length or provided favored access as secretary of state.

Some Hispanic leaders feeling misled by Trump

“Disappointed.” “Confused.”

Some Hispanic leaders who have been advising Donald Trump say they feel betrayed after his long-awaited immigration speech that definitively ruled out a pathway to legal status for people living in the country illegally.

Trump stopped short of calling for the mass deportation of millions of people who have not committed crimes beyond their immigration offenses. But he also ruled out what he dismissed as “amnesty,” saying those who want to live legally in the U.S. will need to leave and head to the back of the line in their home countries.

“People will know that you can’t just smuggle in, hunker down and wait to be legalized,” Trump declared in his hardline speech Wednesday night.

“Those days are over.”

The language caught off guard a group of Hispanic faith and business leaders who have been advising him, often in the face of criticism from their own communities. In closeddoor meetings, phone calls and in public statements, Trump and his aides had given many the impression that he was prepared to soften his stance on immigration as he tries to court more moderate, general election voters and boost his standing with Hispanics and other minorities.

Now, some feel Trump misled them.

“There’s several of us who have gone out on a limb, if you will, to try to at least be at the table of reason with him, and that’s left us confused and disappointed,” said Tony Suarez, the executive vice president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference.

He’s been among those pushing Trump to moderate his stance.

“He said, ‘Yes,’ and he thought we would be very pleased on Wednesday,” Suarez said. “The impression given on the call was not what we heard last night.”

Alfonso Aguilar, president of the Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles, had prominently endorsed Trump after initially opposing his candidacy. He, too, said Trump had signaled a willingness to moderate some of his immigration plans, including limiting his call for deportations to those convicted of crimes.

“At this point, I just don’t see how I can support him. So I’m withdrawing my support,” Aguilar said. “I was expecting something very different last night. I’m not naive, I knew who I was dealing with. I knew this could happen. It was a risk.

“From a political perspective, this is the end of Donald Trump. I really think now he’s definitely going to lose.”

Trump’s campaign, however, insisted the billionaire businessman never had wa-

vered.

“Mr. Trump has been consistent in advocating for an end to illegal immigration and he will continue to reach out and work with voters from all communities to defeat Crooked Hillary Clinton this fall,” said Jason Miller, the campaign’s senior communications adviser.

Those speaking out against Trump also included Jacob Monty, a Houston-based attorney and member of the candidate’s National Hispanic Advisory Council. In a Facebook post, Monty said he was finished supporting Trump after hearing the speech.

“I gave Donald Trump a plan that would improve border security, remove hardened criminal aliens and most importantly give work authority to the millions of honest, hardworking immigrants in the US. He rejected that tonight, and so I must reject him,” he wrote, adding that Trump had at one point been moving toward a “compassionate immigration plan.”

“Tonight, he was not a Republican but a populist, modern-day Father Coughlin who demonized immigrants,” he continued, referring to an anti-Semitic priest who gained prominence as a radio personality in the 1930s. “He must want to lose. He can do that without me.”

In a democracy, voters should decide

SPRINGFIELD – “Commonsense justice” took a blow last week when the Illinois Supreme Court ruled that the Illinois voters can’t have a voice in amending the state constitution when it comes to how legislative districts are drawn.

The decision was written by Justice Tom Kilbride who was first elected to the high court in 2000 with a platform of “commonsense justice” – and the support of House Speaker Mike Madigan.

I’ve known Kilbride for more than 20 years, have read many of his decisions and have found them almost universally well-reasoned – even the ones I disagreed with. And he is a genuinely nice person. I remember when my brother was dying, he told me he was praying for him. That meant a lot to me.

But, man, I believe he was wrong-headed in his decision on legislative redistricting.

Madigan is a master of the dark art of drawing legislative district boundaries to ensure that he hangs onto a Democratic majority in the House – and his hold on power.

For decades, he and his minions have drawn legislative districts so craftily that in most races it’s a foregone conclusion which party will represent a given area.

In fact, at my request earlier this year, Ballotpedia analyzed 2016 Illinois election filing data and found that in 67 percent of Illinois legislative districts the candidate, usually an incumbent, will run unopposed in November.

Yes, you read that right. More than two-thirds of the time, voters have only one legislative candidate to “choose” from. And in the remaining one-third of districts, the opposition is usually nominal.

Candidates don’t run because they know a person of their political party can’t win in the district where they live.

And this is how Madigan has hung onto power.

And the only way this system can be altered is by amending the state constitution.

Usually, the Illinois General Assembly has to put measures on the ballot to amend the constitution.

But drafters of the state constitution didn’t think it was a good idea to leave reforming the Legislature in the hands of, well, the Legislature itself. So they empowered voters to place measures to reform the Legislature on the ballot through a petition drive.

And this year, almost 600,000 Illinoisans signed the petitions to allow voters to

Splitting along partisan lines, four Democratic justices ruled that voters won’t get to vote on the measure.

The decision was a blow to democracy in the state of Illinois. And it gives voters yet another reason to lose faith in their state and become cynical about government.

Republican Justice Robert Thomas dissented, writing: “The Illinois constitution is meant to prevent tyranny, not to enshrine it.”

Democrat justices blocked the measure going on the ballot on technical grounds.

In its decision, the majority held that the plan to turn over the remapping process to a group mostly composed of nonlawmakers was improper because some of the power to select the re-mappers would be given to the state’s auditor general.

And, gee, the responsibilities of the auditor general are covered by a different part of the constitution than the one being amended.

Yeah, that seems like a good reason to slap nearly 600,000 petition signers in the face.

Justice Thomas wrote in his dissent, “The majority’s ruling in this case comes at a particularly unfortunate time. In Illinois, as throughout the United States, there is a palpable sense of frustration by voters of every political affiliation that self-perpetuating institutions of government have excluded them from meaningful participation in the political process.”

Amen, Brother Thomas.

Folks are angry with the political process and they are demanding change. Look no further than the insurgent candidacies of Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump.

The demand for change is palatable.

And yet, the Illinois Supreme Court voted not only against democracy – but against commonsense.

In a democracy, voters should decide.

To the Editor: As a constituent of District 5 in Joliet (yes, not all residents of Joliet have a Joliet address) I cannot disagree more strongly that the current system of representation is just.

My beleaguered councilman has such a diverse district there is no way he can successfully represent all fairly. I submit the farms south of Laraway and the homes along Briggs have much different concerns.

The at-large system means the core neighborhoods of Joliet are over-represented and those of us on the edges are forgotten altogether until it’s time to collect taxes.

Please, vote to abolish “at large” seats on the Joliet City Council.

But when a player such as Olympian Kelly Murphy is honored beforehand and poses for pictures with fans while watching the action, a revved-up setting gets even more electric.

The Angels fed off the energy produced by the return of their former

All-American who recently helped Team USA to capture a bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

JCA, which suffered three-set losses at Lincoln-Way East and Minooka on the previous two evenings, saw a close one go its way as it got past equally inspired Hinsdale South, 25-23, 26-24, in a nonconference match.

“At times, my girls weren’t necessarily as focused as they could have been because of everything that was going on, but it was a very positive dis-

traction,” JCA coach Christine Scheibe said. “Everybody was having fun and we were able to feed off of that energy at the end. They didn’t want to go to three, they wanted to take care of business and get it done.

“Kelly came in as a freshman in 2004 and was one of the people who kept the tradition that we started going, and these girls feel the pride of that and want to continue that. She’s someone who is such an icon, and they see her banner in the gym every day. It’s something that they feel pride in and want

to take ownership of themselves and follow in her footsteps.

“Their coach (South’s Lisa Tazelaar) has a connection to Kelly through Sports Performance so, I felt it was a good game for her to be here.

They were excited to see her, too, and who wouldn’t be excited to see an Olympian. Hinsdale played real good defense and was scrappy and got a lot of balls up, and their big middle did a nice job against us and got some kills.”

JOLIET – The third annual Joliet Catholic Academy Hall of Champions induction banquet is scheduled for Saturday night in the JCA Student Activity Center.

This year’s class includes Jane Condon (St. Francis, 1975), an all-everything athlete who was a pioneer in girls sports; Pat Mudron (Joliet Catholic, 1967), an all-state football player and state heavyweight wrestling champion; Mark Parker (Joliet Catholic, 1976), a superb three-sport standout who quarterbacked the first of the Hilltoppers’ 13 state championship football teams; Jack Perconte (Joliet Catholic, 1972), who had a seven-year major league baseball career and sported a .270 career batting average; and Pat Sullivan (Joliet Catholic, 1961), a member of numerous hall of fames who spent 35 years at University of St. Francis as men’s basketball coach, athletic director and athletic

chairman.

“We were literally bouncing off the walls from the minute that we stepped out here. You could feel the vibes from everyone. It was a very positive atmosphere, and that made playing our third game in a row a lot easier. From our first game to now, it’s a whole new game. CHICAGO – Addison Russell hit a two-run single with the bases loaded in the seventh inning, and the Cubs beat the San Francisco Giants 5-4 on Thursday night.

The Cubs spoiled a shaky Jeff Samardzija’s return to Wrigley Field and started September on a winning note after going 22-6 to match the 1932 team for the best August in franchise history.

The major league leaders also moved a season-high 39 games over .500 and a jaw-dropping 151/2 games ahead of St. Louis in the NL Central – their largest lead in the standings since the 1907 team finished 17 games ahead of Pittsburgh, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

The Cubs were trailing 4-3 going into the seventh when Hunter Strick-

land (3-2) gave up a leadoff single to Dexter Fowler and walked Kris Bryant after two close pitches were called balls.

Will Smith walked Ben Zobrist with one out to load the bases before retiring Jason Heyward on a pop fly.

But Russell then blooped a two-run single to left off Cory Gearrin.

That gave the Cubs a 5-4 lead and made a winner of Joe Smith (2-4), who worked two scoreless innings in relief after returning from a strained left hamstring.

Fowler had two hits and scored two runs. Bryant added an RBI single to extend his hitting streak to 14 games, matching a career high.

Carl Edwards Jr. worked the ninth for his first career save, and the Cubs came away with the win on a cool and windy night in which both starting pitchers lasted just four innings.

Three Slammers win Auto Dealer Frontier League awards DIRECTORY SUBMITTED REPORTS

SAUGET – One day after wrapping up the Frontier League’s East Division title to assure them of their first playoff appearance since 2011, the Joliet Slammers learned that three members of their squad received league postseason awards.

Pitcher Liam O’Sullivan, manager Jeff Isom and trainer Andrew Gates all were recognized by the league office after voting by general managers, coaching staffs and local media.

O’Sullivan earned the Brian Tollberg Award as the league’s most valuable pitcher after posting a league-high 11 wins during an 11-1 campaign in which he had the second-most strikeouts with 109 and owns a 3.32 ERA in 20 games. A year ago in limited action with the Frontier Greys, the native of South Grafton, Mass. went 0-3 with a 7.42 ERA. Isom was the recipient of the Roger Hanners Award as the league’s manager of the year. He led the Slammers to a 5042 record and division title one year after

his squad took fifth in the West Division with a 42-54 mark. He also won the award in 2002 while at Washington. Bart Zeller won the same award in 2011, the year the Slammers captured the league title.

And Gates, who has served as Joliet’s team physician for the past five years, received the league’s Trainer of the Year Award. He works for ATI Physical Therapy.

Evansville’s Josh Allen won the Morgan Burkhart Award as the most valuable player. He’s hit .350 with nine home runs and 44 RBIs to lead the Otters to a 53-38 record, which is second-best in the league. Evansville will meet Joliet in the first-round of the playoffs.

Joliet lost its road finale, 8-2, at Lake Erie on Thursday. It hosts Traverse City for three games this weekend.

The Slammers will open the Frontier League playoffs with games at Evansville on Tuesday and Wednesday. They will host a 7:05 p.m. game Friday and a 6:05 p.m. contest on Sept. 10 and a 1:05 game on Sept. 11, if it’s necessary in the best-of-five series.

CLEVELAND – Robert Griffin III led Cleveland’s starting offense on a short touchdown drive against the Bears’ defensive backups in a 21-7 exhibition loss on Thursday night.

Ka’Deem Carey scored on a 1-yard run in the first half, rookie Jordan Howard had a 16-yard TD run and Robbie Gould kicked three field goals as the Bears (1-3) avoided a winless preseason.

Not the Browns, who look as if they could use more time before the Sept. 11 opener.

Isaiah Crowell had a 4-yard TD for the Browns (0-4), who played Griffin and the offensive starters for the first quarter. RG3, attempting to revive his career in Cleveland after an ugly departure from Washington, went 4 of 8 for 31 yards during his three series.

Griffin’s night might have been over after the second possession, but the Bears fumbled a punt, giving Cleveland the ball at the Bears’ 18.

Younger Sprint Cup drivers making their presence felt

BROOKLYN, Mich. – When Kyle Larson was trying to hold off Chase Elliott at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday, this much was certain: One of them was going to win a Sprint Cup race for the first time.

The next generation of NASCAR standouts has quite an opportunity over these next couple months. With Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart fading from prominence and Dale Earnhardt Jr. sidelined with concussion problems, a handful of younger drivers have emerged in impressive fashion of late.

The 24-year-old Larson ended up winning at Michigan, with the 20-year-old Elliott coming in second. Ryan Blaney was fourth, equaling the highest finish of the 22-year-old’s career.

“When we took that last restart, I saw three guys up there that hadn’t won before,” six-time series champion Jimmie Johnson said. “In my mind I thought, ‘Man, I hope one of these guys gets it.’ ” Larson wrapped up a spot in the Chase with his victory at Michigan, and Elliott seems likely to get in, too. Last year’s Chase did not include a single driver under 25.

Gordon retired at the end of last season, although he’s been back behind the wheel recently to replace the injured Earnhardt. Elliott has replaced Gordon in the No. 24 car and has 12 top-10 finishes this year, an encouraging sign amid

a tough year for Hendrick Motorsports.

He said, ‘They all had a shot at me the first time around and they passed,’ ” Ganassi said. “To say he’s the foundation of the team, sure. Any time you have a young guy come along that can win, sure, you want to rally around that.”

Val Bruech, Mike Markley and Sue Merrell discuss their crime novels

JOLIET – Many people enjoy the lure of good crime fiction.

Draws might be the ethics of right and wrong, the thrill of the cat-and-mouse chase, the mystery of whodunit or the spurious connection to an actual murder.

Recently, three crime novelists with Joliet ties discussed with Features Editor Denise Baran-Unland the components of a good page turner: Val Bruech of Oregon, a former Joliet attorney; Mike Markley of Joliet; and Sue Merrell of Michigan, a former reporter for The Herald-News, who wrote under the name Sue Wallace.

Bruech is the author of “Judicious Murder.” In the story, Joliet criminal defense attorney Susan Marshfield is asked to review all the cases she and her mentor, Judge Sam Kendell, defended together after someone beats Kendell to death in his chambers with his own golf club.

Markley wrote and self-published “Necessary Death,” the story of Michael Marello, who runs a business filled with corruption, which includes murder when “necessary.” One day, death touches Marello’s life in ways he hadn’t expected, leading him to rethink his need for power and control.

Merrell is the author and publisher of the Jordan Daily News Mysteries series: “Great News Town” (based on Joliet’s ceramic shop murders in the 1980s), “One Shoe Off” (based on the 1957 disappearance of Joliet journalist Molly Zelko) and “Full Moon Friday.”

Baran-Unland: Why do people enjoy the crime genre?

Bruech: I think it’s the search for truth. I think people love it when the bad guy gets what’s coming to him and – in most crime novels, in some shape or form – the bad guy does.

Markley: I think they get some excitement. They’re intrigued by what makes people do the things they do.

Merrell: People are really interested in the struggle of good over evil and that’s what crime stories boil down to. People are interested in the mystery and the puzzle and they want to figure out who did it.

Baran-Unland: What elements are part of a good crime story?

Bruech: Conflict ... and the protagonist has to have a goal. The reader wants to find out how the protagonist overcomes the obstacles to get to the goal.

Markley: Some things have to shock you or make you disgusted, where people can’t believe this is happening.

Merrell: The stakes have to be high. A small burglary won’t have the same interest as a murder. When a community is threatened is even better. A serial killer where potentially no one is safe is the ultimate in a crime story.

Baran-Unland: Tension is important to any story, but especially so in a crime novel. How do you keep that interest thread tight?

Bruech: Each scene has to build within the scene itself; the conflict has to escalate. But it has to have ebb and flow. In novels, people don’t want constant adrenaline. Take a break in the scene – make it a relaxing or

Markley: You have to have conflict and suspense. I try to end each chapter or section of the book where people just have to turn the page and continue.

Merrell: Pacing is important, when people reveal things.

Baran-Unland: How have your experiences influenced the story?

Bruech (via email): The opening scene in “Judicious Murder” is a courtroom scene where Susan Marshfield is cross-examining a police officer in a drug case. It is based on a case I tried (and won) in Joliet. The verdict actually warranted a small article in the Herald.

Markley: As a Christian man, I put a Christian spin on the story. There is a battle between right and wrong among the violence, but the (off-color) language is not there. I tried to present it in a PG fashion, enough to be believable.

Merrell: For one year I was a regular cop reporter and I covered school boards and park boards and then I worked as the assistant city editor.

Baran-Unland: What did you find challenging during the writing process?

Bruech: I think the technical part. In one chapter, the bad guy finally has Susan in a deserted trailer and her hands are taped behind a chair with heavy duct tape. I had to figure out how to get her out of that.

Markley: It was easier to do than I thought. But sometimes I had to stop and say, ‘OK, I got into this. Now how do I get out of it?’

Merrell: I went home after a day in court (in 1983), wrote the first chapter and never got around to writing anymore until 2001. By then, my son was grown.

Baran-Unland: Any final comments?

Bruech: The first time you write it through (Bruech wrote 10 early drafts of her first novel), write what’s in your head. Don’t think about how it fits together. Just write it as it’s happening.

Markley: I like the idea of manipulation, how someone can have the power, the influence and the money to make things happen the way they want them to happen.”

Merrell: The premise is truth based on fiction. I didn’t interview people and I didn’t try to tell a true story or reveal new evidence. I wanted to tell an interesting story and leave out the boring parts.

Study links insomnia, weight gain Dear Dr. K: I’ve been suffering from insomnia for the past year or so. I’ve also gained 15 pounds over the same time period. Could the two be connected?

Dear Reader: I spoke about this with my colleague Dr. Stuart Quan, professor of sleep medicine at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He confirmed there is growing evidence of a link between obesity and insufficient sleep. The growth of this country’s obesity epidemic over the past 40 years, for example, correlates with a decline in the amount of sleep reported by the average adult. And in large population-based studies, obesity has been linked to less sleep.

But how might sleep deficiency be related to weight gain? A recent study published in the journal Sleep provides some clues. Researchers studied a group of young, healthy adults over the course of four nights. One group was restricted to 4.5 hours of sleep a night; the other group got 8.5 hours of sleep a night.

At the end of the study, the researchers measured two hormones responsible for hunger: ghrelin (which increases appetite) and leptin (which reduces appetite). In the sleep-restricted group, the ratio of the two hunger hormones was altered to favor greater appetite.

Other studies have observed the same thing. However, this study measured something more. Snack consumption – particularly items with more fat and protein – was higher after sleep restriction. And, strikingly, levels of appetite-stoking chemicals such as ghrelin were higher at the time of greater snack consumption. These chemicals also stimulate reward centers in the brain.

So not only does sleep restriction make you hungrier, it also makes the act of eating more satisfying. In the face of this one-two punch, your willpower doesn’t stand much of a chance.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff This exciting finding requires further investigation, but it already supports existing evidence sufficient sleep is important for optimal health. In particular, adequate sleep is important for combating obesity.

Not getting enough sleep regularly is also associated with many health problems besides obesity. Difficulty thinking and depressed mood are two consequences. So is an increased risk of accidents and resulting injuries. Heart problems are more common.

Inflammation in the body is encouraged by sleep deprivation.

The immune system is affected. For example, people do not get the same protection from vaccines when they are chronically sleep-deprived. Finally, the risk of getting Type 2 diabetes may be higher – even if chronic sleep deprivation does not result in obesity.

How much sleep do we need? People are different: Some need more sleep than the average person, and some need less. For adults ages 26 to 64, seven to nine hours are recommended. For adults aged 65 or older, it’s seven to eight hours.

So I do think there is likely a connection between your insomnia and weight gain. The former could be leading to the latter – and both of them could be caused by depression and anxiety. Talk to your doctor; there could well be a treatment that would improve your mood, help you lose weight – and give you a good night’s sleep.

To my dismay, now that I am living alone and see my sons only on weekends, I feel lost. I had all these plans for just such a time, but now I find I have little motivation to do anything. It feels almost as if I have lost my purpose, as though my job is over and I can’t find the me I was before I was a father. It happens to many parents when their last child leaves home. A way to cope with the emptiness and aimlessness you are feeling would be to talk about it with other family members, or the parents of other young adults who have moved out on their own. It’s important you fill your time with activities you enjoy, and socialize with others so you don’t just sit around and brood. However, because your feelings of sadness and aimlessness have persisted, I recommend you also discuss them with your doctor to make sure you are not suffering from depression. If it is depression, your doctor can help you.

Most of the time her pants are wet. When she comes to visit, she doesn’t hesitate to sit on my furniture, and when she stands up, she causes a spot on my carpet. I’m worried my house will start to smell. After she leaves I have to go around spraying and mopping. I’m sure she wears adult diapers because after she leaves we find them in our trash. They are soaked, so I think she probably needs to change more often.

How do I ask her nicely not to sit on my furniture? I would love to suggest having her get medical help, but am afraid she would be insulted, and I don’t know how to address it.

Declarer ruffs the fourth diamond with his heart nine, plays a heart to dummy’s ace, returns a heart to his jack, cashes the heart king, and claims.
