Judge to decide whether ‘typo’ should stay in proposed Joliet referendum

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A lawyer for the resident group seeking to restructure the Joliet City Council told a judge Wednesday that a referendum to do so should go on the November ballot despite a “typo” that makes it impossible to enact as worded.

Will County Judge John Anderson said he expects to make a ruling on the case by Sept. 7 before the ballots are scheduled to go to the printer.

At a hearing Wednesday, Anderson questioned whether any referendum could go on the ballot, even one so absurd as to ask voters to name him “sultan.”

Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots has petitioned the court for a ruling on what to do with the referendum because of wording that would require new council districts to be in force for an election that would occur before the new district map could be drawn.

Attorney Neil Conrad said the referendum, if approved as worded, would apply

absurd? I’m not saying this one is,” Anderson asked Conrad.

“If something is completely absurd, the local election official does not have the authority to object,” Conrad said.

State law provides that such objections be raised by voters to a local electoral board, Conrad said.

Concerned Citizens for Joliet filed petitions for the referendum Aug. 8, the last day to file. No one objected to the referendum before the objection deadline one week later.

The petitions were filed with the city of Joliet, which sent the referendum to the county clerk with an addendum describing it as “a legal impossibility” because of wording that required it to apply to the next city election in April.

The city noted that district maps must be drawn before candidates can take out petitions to run for office, so they know what district they are in. The first day to take out petitions for the April election is Sept. 30. The referendum requires that the maps be drawn by December 2017.

Plainfield Township park officials review referendum strategy

fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield park officials met Wednesday to discuss publicity on an upcoming referendum to build a recreation center and pay for improvements.

At the ad hoc referendum committee, park officials and board commissioners went over the presentation of information to the residents about the referendum that will be on the Nov. 8 ballot.

They also went over the designs of the signs about the referendum and other materials.

Carlo Capalbo, the park district’s executive director, said the more information that goes out, the better.

“The biggest thing we’re trying to avoid unless there is a difference of opinion is lengthy, wordy materials. We’re trying to keep it concise,” he said.

In November, the Plainfield Township Park District will be seeking a bond referendum to replace expiring referendum bonds from 2001.

“The ballot measure should be implemented as written,” Conrad said. “If it does pass, there’s no concern because municipal code just fills in the gap.”

Assistant State’s Attorney Phil Mock, representing the county clerk, said Voots will comply with whatever the judge orders. But Mock said the clerk was concerned that voters would expect the new council districts to be in force for the April 2017 election because that’s what they would have voted for.

“Physically, it can’t happen,” Mock said. “The clerk looked at the petition. On the face of it, it’s not in conformity with the election code.”

Conrad and Mock also argued over whether the county clerk has any authority to bring the issue to court. Conrad said the clerk cannot challenge the content of a referendum but only whether the filing meets the technical requirements of the law.

The referendum was the result of a community-needs survey to evaluate the park system, Capalbo said.

When it came to presentations, Capalbo said he was not expecting long presentations but more of a Q&A session. Presentations would be kept to five to 10 minutes with time allotted to go over questions, he said.

Board commissioner Rob Ayres agreed.

“I think it’s critical to get to those questions and have people asking what their concerns are,” he said.

The committee members went over the signage for the referendum and made suggestions on the design and content. They also reviewed a draft Q&A sheet.

Capalbo made one suggestion about emphasizing the language of the referendum.

“The more we get out what the question reads like and have people see the question is usually the best thing. Because the last thing you want is the first time they walk into the [voter] booth is the first time they read this question,” he said.

mmallory@shawmedia.com FRANKFORT – There never has been more excitement and positive comments about a project in Frankfort in Mayor Jim Holland’s 11 years in the role than there have been about the one that held a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday afternoon.

Upward of 30 village staff and community leaders were on hand at the

former Dominick’s location at 19965 S. LaGrange Road, which will be home to Emagine Entertainment Inc.’s luxurious state-of-the-art 10-screen movie theater. The location will be the site of Michigan-based Emagine’s first theater into the Chicago market and its 10th theater in total.

Holland said the village was impressed by Emagine from the start. He commended the theater’s amenities, food service, lobby design and sig-

nage, adding that it all works within the village’s concepts of quality design.

“Emagine and Frankfort just belong together,” Holland said. “We have similar ideas on what quality looks like.”

Police chief: Dept. strives to build trust Benton spoke at Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry luncheon

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton told a business audience Wednesday that he and fellow police have been “shocked” at some of the officer-involved shootings in the news.

Benton said Joliet police strive to maintain good community relations, a practice he said has been a principle of police work dating back to the 1800s.

Benton discussed the history and future of policing, both in Joliet and nationally, as the featured speaker at the member luncheon for the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

“Some of the shootings I’ve seen in the news I’m shocked at and my officers are shocked at,” Benton said at one point.

Benton’s comment came during a question-and-answer session at the end of the speech when Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow said that local officer-involved shootings that he has reviewed as state’s attorney have all been justified.

“In most cases,” Glasgow said, “our officers hesitated to put a life in danger before they fired.”

“We have strongly encouraged interaction with the community outside of enforcement action,” Benton said. “We know that’s what we’re

supposed to be doing in order to build bonds in the community.”

Benton said he believes the Joliet Police Department, the fourth largest in Illinois, is ahead of many other departments across the country in building public trust because of a long-standing community policing

program.

While public trust in policing has reached a “critical” point, Benton said, the need for that trust has been recognized since the 19th century, he said.

A slide show Benton gave at one point displayed a portrait of Sir Robert Peel, a British prime minister of the 19th century whom Benton described as the “father of modern policing,” and Peel’s “Principles of Law Enforcement.”

“One of his key principles was that police are dependent on public approval,” Benton said. “If we come in with militaristic, autocratic types of force, we’re going to meet with resistance from the public.”

Benton also emphasized the dangers of policing, citing a statistic that a law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty every 61 hours.

He also said that controversies over recent officer-involved shootings have led to police being painted with “a broad brush.”

Benton said police morale has been dampened in some cities, but he believes that is not happening in Joliet.

“I think that’s a tribute to you in the community supporting our officers,” he said.

Investigation continues in Louis Joliet Mall shooting

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Federal charges were pending Wednesday against two suspected drug dealers, one of whom was shot during a confrontation with U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents Tuesday outside the Louis Joliet Mall.

Adan Godinez, 31, of Morris remained hospitalized Wednesday with a wound to his leg that was not life-threatening, Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton said.

“Two police officers are guarding him at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center where he’ll be kept until he’s stable enough to be transferred to jail,” Benton said.

Godinez will be held at the Metro-

politan Correctional Center in Chicago, but could spend a night at the Will County Jail if he ends up being discharged from the hospital in the evening hours.

The other suspect was sent to the Metropolitan Correctional Center on Wednesday morning after spending the night at the Fernando Will County Jail. Jail Gondinez records identified him as Fernando Gondinez, 43, of Cicero, but DEA Special Agent Leo Hawkins said Wednesday morning authorities were verifying if that name was being used as an alias.

About 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Godinez and Gondinez arranged to meet with

undercover narcotics officers in the parking lot between JC Penney and Macy’s, authorities said. The pair brought two kilograms of cocaine to sell, but when officers moved in to arrest them, Godinez took out a handgun and started firing. No one but Godinez was injured, but several parked cars were struck by gunfire, according to authorities. Gondinez also was armed but did not draw his gun.

Part of the parking area was closed off until 1 a.m. Wednesday as evidence technicians examined the scene. Benton said some vehicles were taken by their owners and others had to be towed away.

Benton said Joliet police expected to “interview all parties involved” in the shootout by Friday.

Joliet police and mall management met Wednesday to discuss the shooting.

“The mall has returned to business as usual, but we will have an increased visible presence to reassure the public they’re safe,” Benton said.

Benton spoke Wednesday to the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry and was introduced by mall manager Eric Loula.

Loula did not mention the shooting incident during his remarks, but commended the police department “for their ongoing response and always speedy response.”

Loula declined to comment on the incident to The Herald-News.

6 Murder charges dismissed in

slaying outside Joliet boxing gym

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A special prosecutor has dismissed murder charges against the accused shooter in a 2012 slaying outside a Joliet boxing gym, although he noted he may file them again in the future.

Special Prosecutor Dave Neal told Judge Edward Burmila on Wednesday he would not be ready to prove the case against Kenneth G. Edwards, which had Kenneth G. been scheduled for trial Edwards in two weeks. Edwards’ cousin, Jermain Bennett, who had agreed to testify against him, died in a motorcycle crash in July.

“The people have other occurrence witnesses, but ... the whereabouts of one witness are unknown, despite investigation by the Joliet police,” Neal said. “There is no statute of limitations on murder, and there are no other suspects. When the witness is located, [I] would expect to file charges again.”

Edwards was in court Wednesday after recently being hospitalized for pan-

creatitis.

On Aug. 9, 2012, Sean D. McGinn arrived to meet Bennett at the KO Zone, a gym they co-owned at 218 E. Cass St. in Joliet. Police said McGinn had brought thousands of dollars to buy cocaine from Bennett, who instead planned to rob him.

Edwards was waiting in the parking lot and shot McGinn twice while Bennett took the cash, according to investigators. Police said the drugs Bennett had promised to deliver did not exist.

Nearby residents heard the shots and called police. Bennett was arrested the day after McGinn’s slaying, while Edwards was not charged until October 2013.

Bennett initially charged was with murder, but last year pleaded guilty to robbery in exchange for testifying against Edwards.

Edwards had been on house arrest when DNA testing delayed his right to a speedy trial, which also resulted in Bennett’s transfer to home confinement.

ney’s Office emailed her a copy of a news release on the verdict. Jones said she did not read the news release, but did not inform the defense she’d received it until sentencing two months later, which the appellate court later ruled was improper procedure.

Messina was sentenced to 30 months of probation and was ordered to pay restitution, which was served and paid before the appellate court decision.

“Judge Jones offered some good guidance by recusing herself [when the case came back], and we felt it was appropriate for both sides to remove themselves,” Tomczak said.

Tomczak has the case because Messina’s former attorneys, Dave Carlson and Ken Zelazo, are now judges.

“We did not object to the defense’s motion,” State’s Attorney’s Office spokesman Charles Pelkie said.

“Though the state’s attorney’s office has no disqualifying interest, we want to safeguard against any appearance of impropriety.”

Schoenstedt said Wednesday he wants to confirm the appellate prosecutor’s office will accept the case before it is assigned later this month.

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A special prosecutor likely will be appointed if a New Lenox man is tried for a second time for allegedly inflicting a traumatic brain injury on another man during a 2009 bar fight in Mokena.

Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Mike Fitzgerald and defense attorney Jeff Tomczak met Wednesday with Chief Judge Richard Schoenstedt to seek an appellate prosecutor for the aggravated battery charges against Joseph P. Messina.

Messina was accused of punching Eric J. Bartels on July 25, 2009, outside the 191 South bar and grill. Bartels fractured his skull on the pavement and suffered a brain injury that left him paralyzed, blind and mute.

During Messina’s 2012 trial, several of his friends testified it was not Messina, but Mike Glielmi, another friend of theirs, who punched Bartels. Glielmi exercised his Fifth Amendment right not to testify.

JOLIET – A handgun police found in the area where a man was dropped off by friends on the night of a 2014 slaying was the murder weapon, according to testimony presented Wednesday in court.

Aloysius “June” Alexander, 31, of Joliet, is facing a bench trial on charges he killed Johnny Lockhart, 59, and wounded his son, Ledontia Lockhart, during a Dec. 6, 2014, confrontation in Joliet.

A pathologist testified Wednesday an autopsy confirmed Lockhart died from a gunshot wound and a firearms expert testified that bullets recovered from the body matched a gun he tested.

Joliet police said they found the gun on the grounds of the Evergreen Terrace apartment complex, where Alexander lived at the time of the shooting.

Defense attorney Paul Napolski said no fingerprints or DNA were taken from the gun.

Mike Smith and Brian Gregory have testified they dropped Alexander off at Evergreen Terrace minutes after leaving the Lockharts’ apartment in the 500 block of North Chicago Street in Joliet.

Smith had asked his friends, Gregory and Alexander, to come with him as backup while he confronted Ledontia Lockhart. Smith and Lockhart both testified they were preparing for a fistfight behind the building that was interrupted when Johnny Lockhart came outside.

Smith’s girlfriend, Miya Morris, had been to the apartment earlier that day because she believed Ledontia Lockhart had stolen a $400 money order from her. A verbal argument between Morris and Johnny Lockhart escalated, and he called 911 to have a police officer escort her off the property. Ledontia Lockhart testified he did not take the money order.

Although Smith was aggressive and intoxicated, the fighters paused as Ledontia Lockhart turned to lead his father upstairs, according to trial testimony. A shot rang out, and Smith and Gregory turned to see Alexander firing a gun while standing behind them, both men testified.

Alexander has chosen a bench trial, so Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes will decide if he is guilty. Because a Joliet police evidence technician is out of town this week, the trial is not scheduled to resume until next Wednesday.

grapp@bcrnews.com MORRIS – The vehicle of a Ladd woman reported missing Aug. 23 was located Monday morning in the parking lot of R-Place Family Restaurant in Morris.

Deborah Dewey’s unlocked gray 2007 Buick LaCrosse was “neatly parked” in the lot of the restaurant that sits along Route 47, with no signs of damage and no indication of Dewey being in the area, according to Lt. Jeff Padilla, lead investigator with Illinois State Police District 17.

Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan said the search is being handled by the Illinois State Police but his deputies have a description of the woman and are aware of the search.

A volunteer actively searching for Dewey was the one to report the location of the car. Police are unsure how long the car had been parked in the lot, and they don’t know if Dewey was the driver of the vehicle when it was parked.

Padilla said there was no footage of the parking lot where the car had been sitting.

“There is footage at the pumps and inside the store and restaurant,” he said, adding Dewey was not seen on any of those cameras.

“We have not seen her in Morris, other than having her car in the parking lot,” he said.

At this point, police don’t have enough evidence to confirm whether Dewey went missing on her own.

“We have no indication at this point of any foul play,” Padilla said.

Chris Dewey, Deborah’s son, said it’s unusual his mother’s car would be in Morris. She had no reason to be there, he said, adding that his mother didn’t like to drive on busy interstates and always avoided them when possible.

Padilla, however, noted there are many ways of getting to the Morris restaurant without taking Interstate 80.

Despite that statement, Chris said, his mother never would drive to Morris, and believes she was abducted.

Police have secured the car and Dewey’s apartment in Ladd.

“We are still working to firm up a timeline as to when she was last seen and heard from,” Padilla said.

Dewey is 62, white, with short gray hair and brown eyes. She is 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighs 150 pounds. Dewey has not contacted her family or friends since Aug. 22. The last known communication from Dewey was through a text message sent around 7 a.m. that day.

Padilla said police have Dewey on security camera footage in the Spring Valley area the morning of Aug. 22, but from what can be seen, she’s doing noth-

ing out of the ordinary.

“In fact, it’s her running errands, and it seems to be routine,” he said.

Padilla also confirmed Dewey has not tried making any calls from her cellphone.

Padilla said officers have flown four air missions, used the Internet intelligence unit, checked with gaming units to see if there were any connections with casinos in the area and have asked Illinois State Conservation Police to use sonar devices in the river.

“We’re looking down every avenue, and we’re going to keep looking. We have an active command post in LaSalle, and we’re going to continue to do everything we can to try and find Debbie,” Padilla said.

Dewey’s family also is continuing their search. Chris said family and friends are out now passing around fliers and have spread their search to Morris. The family is offering a cash reward for locating her; however, they have not disclosed the amount.

Deer population control debated again

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The issue of deer population control on Forest Preserve District of Will County land returned Wednesday to the committee discussion level.

The district’s Board of Commissioners’ Operations Committee positively recommended, with a 7-4 vote, the 201617 deer management recommendations to the full board, to be carried out in the winter months. The district is proposing that 200 total deer be removed from nine preserves.

Committee members Robert Howard, D-Beecher; Judy Ogalla, R-Monee; Mike Fricilone, R-Homer Glen; and Steve Balich, R-Homer Glen, voted against the recommendations.

In 2010, the board approved a 2010-11 plan for the district’s deer management program. The plan established that sharpshooting was to be used to manage the deer population to achieve an initial target density of 20 to 30 deer per square mile. Although the overall deer management program was approved, each year staff provide specific recommendations on the number of deer to be removed from select forest preserves.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has various requirements of counties before it gives the green light for removal. The district comes to its recommendations through aerial and ground-level assessments. The forest preserve police perform the sharp-

shooting, and deer meat that passes health inspection is brought to food pantries.

Howard said he’d like to see a moratorium on deer culling until more information is collected. Hunters in District 1, which covers five townships in eastern Will County, have commented to him they are seeing fewer deer and have asked why hunters aren’t allowed to perform the removal.

Another element to population control, Howard said, is that the eastern end of the county borders Indiana and there’s no way to tell whether deer are moving back and forth across the state line.

Howard said the district assessments don’t reflect a true number and they should look at the entire county, not just preserves, because deer are an edge-ofthe-woods animal that also spends time in cornfields and creek bottoms. He said he’d like to see the IDNR do a count.

Committee member Chuck Maher, R-Naperville, said at some point the board will have to make an unpopular vote on the matter as the issue continues to come up each year.

Ogalla said the need for the program came from various types of development throughout the county. Because of it, deer have fewer places to run and pose more of a safety threat in certain areas to motorists. She noted that preserves in areas such as Naperville are more surrounded by residential communities.

New Lenox Fire Protection District responds to Mokena structure fire The HERALD–NEWS MOKENA – A structure fire significantly damaged a Mokena home.

The New Lenox Fire Protection District was called at 2:16 a.m.

Wednesday for a report of a structure fire in the 13000 block of West 184th Place in Mokena. Upon arrival firefighters found the two-story home fully involved, according to a news release from the district. No injuries were reported, and all residents were able to get out of the home safely.

The fire took about 90 minutes to



put out, district Public Information Officer Marisa Schrieber said.

There is significant damage to the home, but total cost of damage was not yet available, according to the district. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The NLFPD was assisted in the fire by personnel from Manhattan, Frankfort, Mokena, Homer, Lockport, Northwest Homer, East Joliet and Kurtz. Other area fire departments also covered New Lenox during this time for any additional emergency calls.

 

“This is about escapism,” Glantz said. “It’s about a night out. We want folks to feel like they can show up five minutes before a show and their good seat is established.”

Emagine Frankfort will have 1,300 total seats among its 10 auditoriums that are equipped with Christie 4K DLP Digital Cinema projectors and Dolby sound systems that immerse customers in sound from the front, rear and sides. Guests will sit in leather chairs that recline with the touch of a button.

Chairs are separated by 7 feet of row spacing at each side. All auditoriums will be handicapped-accessible with assistance devices for both seeing- and hearing-impaired guests.

Glantz said there won’t be a bad seat in the house.

“I refuse to put $600 chairs in that no one wants to sit in,” Glantz said.

The company is hopeful the theater won’t just serve the Frankfort area but that it will be a destination mov-

ie-viewing experience for the region.

“I hope this is recognized and appreciated as an exemplary experience that would justify bringing in people from greater distances,” Glantz said.

In 2014, Emagine acquired a defunct grocery store in Michigan and it turned out to be a great success, Glantz said, so they asked the real estate broker what else was available.

They looked at 50 to 60 other locations mostly in the Chicago area. The old Frankfort Dominick’s met the company’s criteria.

Glantz said when evaluating prospective locations there had to be sufficient population density, a certain level of affluence, a well-traveled retail location and the area needed to be one where the company wasn’t building on top of a competitor.

“We’re always interested in growing the pie, rather than stealing part of it,” Glantz said.

Each of the 10 auditoriums will cost the company more than $1 million each. The land and building is owned by Emagine.

Much of the company’s leadership traveled to Frankfort for the groundbreaking. They spent the morning reviewing more sites in the area, Glantz said.

The 70,000-square-foot theater is expected to open in the winter. Glantz said he’s hoping for a Christmas miracle to open in time for the holiday.

She was thrilled with the 1985 Bears Super Bowl win and the 2005 White Sox World Series win.

She died the way she lived: with quiet dignity, family around her, pictures of grandkids and great grand kids in her sight.

She will be remembered as a Christian, kind, loving, smart, strong, forgiving: a great teacher who loved to tell life stories.

She was a daughter, mother, mother-in-law, great-grandmother, friend and mentor. But her most cherished role was that of grandmother.

She was blessed to have had an active role in her grandkids lives, proud they wanted to include her. I trust they knew how much they meant to her and how proud she was in her role as their loving grandmother.

Vera Caslavska, Czech gymnastics great, dies at 74

PRAGUE – Vera Caslavska, a seven-time Olympic gymnastics gold medalist who stood up against the 1968 Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia, has died. She was 74.

The Czech Olympic Committee said Wednesday that Caslavska died late Tuesday in Prague. Caslavska had cancer of the pancreas and underwent surgery last year, the committee previously said. She later had chemotherapy treatment.

“She was always a great role model to others,” said Jiri Kejval, the committee’s president. “Till the last moment, she was full of energy, which she managed to pass on to all those around her. We will miss her greatly.”

Born May 3, 1942, in Prague, Caslavska claimed her first Olympic medal – a silver – at the 1960 Rome Games. Her golden era began four years later. She won three Olympic golds in Tokyo in 1964 – in the vault,

the individual all-around and the balance beam – to establish herself as a major force in her sport.

Four years later, Caslavska became an outspoken supporter of Alexander Dubcek’s liberal reforms meant to lead toward democratization of communist Czechoslovakia, an era known as the Prague Spring. She signed the Two Thousand Words manifesto published in June 1968 that called for deeper pro-democratic changes. That document angered Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev, who ordered the Warsaw Pact’s troops to invade Czechoslovakia to crush the reforms in August.

Facing possible persecution, Caslavska went into hiding and was allowed only just before the 1968 Mexico City Olympics to join the national gymnastics team. She triumphed in four disciplines, winning the Olympic gold in the vault, the individual all-around, the floor exercise and the uneven bars. With another two silver medals at the 1968 Games, she became the top medalist.

CHICAGO – A judge on Wednesday dismissed a lawsuit brought by social service providers who wanted the court to force payment on contracts with the state of Illinois, saying the issue belongs in a higher court.

After brief oral arguments, Cook County Judge Rodolfo Garcia tossed the lawsuit.

Nearly 100 social service providers, called the Pay Now Illinois coalition, sued in May over fallout from the state’s unprecedented budget stalemate.

They argued the state breached its service contracts and they were owed roughly $160 million collectively for services, including health care and programs to fight homelessness.

The lawsuit named Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, who has been deadlocked on a full year budget with the Democratic-controlled Legisla-

Group asks state high court for redistricting rehearing

CHICAGO – A group that has led an effort to change how political boundaries are drawn in Illinois asked the state Supreme Court on Wednesday to reconsider its ruling that a voter referendum on the issue is unconstitutional.

The Illinois Supreme Court ruled 4-3 last week that the Independent Maps coalition’s ballot initiative seeking to give legislative mapmaking power to an independent commission instead of lawmakers didn’t meet constitutional muster. That made the measure ineligible to appear on the state’s November ballot.

However, justices didn’t rule out redistricting for future ballots. It’s the second failed attempt to overhaul redistricting by petition in two years.

The Aug. 25 ruling took place the day before an election deadline to certify fall ballots. The group needs four votes for a rehearing. They collected about 563,000 signatures for the measure.

Addiction services featured in Ill. Medicaid proposal

CHICAGO – Addiction treatment and support for long-term recovery are included in a new proposal to restructure Illinois’ $18 billion Medicaid program.

Twelve Illinois state agencies and Gov. Bruce Rauner’s office will host two public hearings next week on the proposal. It would bring in $2.7 billion in new federal money over five years if approved by Washington.

The proposal includes housing and employment services for vulnerable people, and it would strengthen prerelease services for prisoners. A pilot program would provide an injectable relapse-prevention drug called naltrexone

Prison term sought for Ill. man in photo hack case

CHICAGO – Federal court records show that prosecutors are seeking a nine-month prison sentence for an Illinois man accused of hacking into email and electronic accounts of 30 celebrities and stealing private information, including nude videos and photos.

Edward Majerczyk pleaded guilty in federal court in Los Angeles last month to one count of felony computer hacking.

Prosecutors said the 28-year-old used a phishing scheme to illegally access more than 300 email and other online accounts between November 2013 and August 2014.

His process entailed sending emails to victims that appeared to be from security accounts of internet service providers and asked for the victims’ user names and passwords. He then illegally accessed the email accounts of those who provided that private information and obtained private photos and videos.

Some of these photos were later leaked on websites such as Reddit

Fire marshal probes after 2 killed in house explosion

FAIRMOUNT – The Vermilion County Coroner’s Office said two people found dead after an explosion leveled a home were a 77-year-old woman and 64-year-old man.

Coroner Peggy Johnson said in a news release Wednesday that Delores Sapp and Floyd L. Walton were killed by the force of the blast Tuesday at the house in Fairmount. The town of 620 people is about 25 miles east of Champaign.

Fairmount Fire Chief Dave Ferber said the blast “blew the house completely apart.”

Ferber said the explosion left little of the home but debris and a basement that was 5-feet deep in rubble. A column of smoke could be seen for miles.

The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause.

Trump vows to remove people in country illegally The ASSOCIATED PRESS PHOENIX – Seeking to end confusion over his aggressive but recently muddled language on immigration, Donald Trump vowed Wednesday to remove millions of people living in the country illegally if he becomes president, warning that failure to do so would jeopardize the “well-being of the American people.”

But Trump didn’t address what he would do about millions more who might remain under his approach – the major question that has frustrated past congressional attempts at remaking the nation’s immigration laws.

Instead, Trump repeated the standard Republican talking point that only after securing the border can such a discussion begin to take place.

It was a retreat in the rhetoric for the billionaire from the GOP primaries, when he had vowed his “deportation force” would seek to remove all who didn’t have permission to live and work in the country.

The Republican presidential candidate insisted than any of the estimated 11 million such immigrants who want to seek legal status or citizenship in the U.S. must return to their home countries in order to do so. And he outlined plans to create a special task force that would prioritize the deportation of criminals, people who have overstayed their visas and other immediate security threats.

“Anyone who has entered the United

States illegally is subject to deportation,” Trump charged in the highly anticipated speech, which took place hours after he met with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.

He added, “There will be no amnesty.”

The aggressive tone during his speech in Phoenix marked a shift from the New York billionaire’s demeanor earlier in the day, when a much more measured Trump described Mexicans as “amazing people” as he appeared alongside Pena Nieto in Mexico’s capital city. It was his first meeting with a head of state as his party’s presidential nominee.

Shortly after the joint appearance, a dispute arose over the most contentious part of the billionaire’s plans to secure the U.S. southern border and fight illegal immigration – his insistence that Mexico must pay to build his promised wall.

Trump told reporters during the afternoon appearance that the two men didn’t discuss who would pay for a cost of construction pegged in the billions. Silent at that moment, Pena Nieto later tweeted, “At the start of the conversation with Donald Trump I made it clear that Mexico will not pay for the wall.”

With the meeting held behind closed doors, it was impossible to know who was telling the truth. But clash cast a cloud over Trump’s first meeting with a foreign dignitary and threatened to overshadow the evening address.

McDonald’s on Broadway in Joliet holds ribbon cutting SHAW MEDIA JOLIET – The McDonald’s at 1555 N. Broadway in celebrated its grand re-opening Aug. 25 with a ribbon, cake cutting and VIP party.

Marvin Spence, the owner-operator of the restaurant, said in a news release he was proud to bring Joliet an upscale new McDonald’s for the community to enjoy for years to come.

Among those in attendance at a VIP party Aug. 25 were friends, colleagues, City employees, Joliet Chamber members and representatives from the local schools.

State Reps. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, and Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood, both

spoke and thanked Marvin for being a part of Joliet.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk told Marvin how thrilled they are to have him at this location and for his involvement in the community.

The event featured complimentary McDonald’s appetizers, smoothies and a cake. The event featured a special appearance by Ronald McDonald. Mike Paone, vice president of the Joliet Chamber, and Danielle Blake, Joliet Chamber account executive, coordinated the ribbon cutting at the party.

Grand re-opening events are scheduled to run through Sept. 11.

Fresh Thyme Farmers Market donates more than $175,000 to raise awareness for veteran suicide CHICAGO – Fresh Thyme Farmers Market, which has a location in Joliet, held its second annual golf classic Aug. 25 at Cog Hill Country Club, with more than 300 people taking part in honor of veterans organization Mission 22.

Fresh Thyme has donated more than $300,000 to Mission 22 since 2015, which was founded by veterans who, after returning from active duty, suffered from extensive post-traumatic stress disorder. There are an average of 22 veteran suicides every day.

The Mission 22 project is a national non-profit organization that raises awareness about veteran suicide, create large scale public art to honor veterans who lost their lives at home, and to help raise funds for veterans to receive treatment.

emy fans.

That was the same for Wednesday’s volleyball game.

When the Angels started screaming, Minooka started roaring. The host Indians ended up picking up a close 19-25, 25-16, 25-21 nonconference win over JCA. For all of the Indians fans in the

stands, the Angels made them sweat.

“Winning this is going to change our attitude on things,” Minooka coach Carrie Prosek said. “It is nice to win against a team that is so successful. I’ve got to say, consistently, Joliet Catholic has some of the best defense in the area. You have to give that to them.”

In Game 1, Joliet Catholic (3-5) let its ball control shine.

Sophomore libero Meg Sliwa ltotalled 16 digs in the match and barely let a ball drop.

University of St. Francis football coach Joe Curry loves recruiting high school players in the Joliet area.

Of course, so does former USF All-America linebacker Mike Feminis, who is in his 18th season as coach at Saint Xavier.

Whenever national letter-of-intent signing day celebrations for football occur at local schools, chances are good Curry and/or Feminis will be there.

Simply put, the Saints and Cougars are natural rivals, and natural rivals when it comes to recruiting Joliet-area talent. For fans who follow high school football in these parts, when the two schools meet on the field, it is a special get-together. Area standouts annually play prominent roles for both teams, and players on both sides know each other well. They would like nothing better than to beat their friends and

Saint Xavier has had the upper hand in the series, winning 15 of the 16 games, including the past seven. The teams will meet for the 17th consecutive season at 6 p.m. Saturday in a MidStates Football Association Midwest League matchup at Saint Xavier.

The game will be the season opener for USF. Saint Xavier (0-1) had the misfortune of opening last week at defending NAIA national champion Marian (Indiana) and suffered a 56-10 thumping.

“I feel like our young kids are really coming along, but they just need to get used to playing varsity-style soccer,” Williams said. “We’ve got kids who were the best players on their freshman or eighth-grade teams. They realize that they can’t do all of the things on the field that they used to do, so there’s still a little bit of a learning curve with those guys.

“One of the things that we’re learning to do is how to finish. We had plenty of opportunities today, but we’re still a little bit too nervous in the 18 with the ball.

It’s nice to have the seniors on defense to count on. I like the fact that these guys don’t quit and we always have someone who is willing to step up and show me what they can do.”

ROMEOVILLE – Romeoville’s boys soccer team features a relatively young roster, but it might be tough to determine that based on the squad’s performance in Wednesday’s Southwest Prairie Conference opener with Plainfield South.

The Spartans capitalized on a few opening-half scoring opportunities and then made that those stand as they went on to capture a 3-0 home victory over the Cougars.

Leandro Deagueros, Ondre Olvera and David Cahue all scored goals for the Spartans (4-0, 1-0) while Edwin Nava and Olvera added assists, keepers Oscar Guzman and Joel Toro combined to record the shutout against the Cougars (2-3, 0-1).

“We’re actually young since we don’t have many guys who came back this year,” Spartans coach Nick Cirrincione said. “We only have a couple of seniors and most the rest are juniors, plus we start a couple of freshmen. So it’s surprising that we’ve done so well. But we still have a long ways to go.

“This is a good group of guys, and they all work well together. And we have a good support cast of people who are coaching and helping out so that the program can have success. We all want the best for the kids, and they seem to buy into our system, and it’s nice that things are paying off. But August is practice, and our only goal is to be hot at the end

I think in Game 2, our serve receive was not quite as strong so we were not able to run the offense that we wanted and we were on our heels.

The girls fought really hard and we were in it until the very end.”

Junior setter Sarah Nahas distributed the ball very evenly and totalled 24 assists. Nahas found success in outsides Taylor Zurliene (12 kills) and Emily Holbrook (seven kills).

Going against Minooka’s tall blockers, the 5’8 outsides were able to find success because of their shot placement. They went line, tooled the block and went to places the Indians’ defense was not at. They weren’t intimidated about what stood across from them at the net.

“My height doesn’t really define me,” Holbrook said. “It’s how you choose to play and I choose to play tall.”

While the outsides were not intimidated by their opponents, Nahas was excited to play against them. Nahas plays with a majority of the Minooka team in club. Several times throughout the game, Nahas blocked her club teammates and got points on smart plays. It was her time to shine for JCA, and she did.

She’s proud of her team’s performance.

“To be able to play against one of the best teams and take them to three and almost beat them is a huge accomplish,” Nahas said. “It was a battle of the third game.”

In the second and third game, the more dominate team shined.

Matti Ziech serves eight consecutive balls and enabled the Minooka offense to shine.

Junior outside Alli Papesh led the Indians (4-2) with 19 kills and a .353 hitting percentage, while junior outside Rocky Perinar 13 kills (.386 hitting percentage) and junior rightside Holly Bonde had eight kills (.421 hitting percentage). Senior setter Brooklyn Bachmann had 41 assists.

“Our hardest thing as a team is to get started and giving our pins the opportunity to put the ball down,” Bachmann said. “That’s pretty much our weakness. Once we get started though, we’re hard to stop. When Rocky, Alli and Holly are putting the ball down, Taylor is digging and we’re all covering on the block, we work together and that’s when we’re the best.”

When junior libero Taylor Baranski digs, the offense can shine. She totalled 23 digs and kept her team in system.

That comes with facing one of the top defensive teams in the area. Baranski wants to compete with the best.

“I play against a lot of those girls in club so I know that it’s not going to be easy because I know that they will get almost all of the balls up,” Baranski said.

“Being a defensive player, I know that I have to do the exact same if not better. I know that I need to get every pass up to the net because if I don’t, they will and their team can take advantage of that.

I have to take control of the back court and just do my job as well as I can.”

Going into future games, Minooka will aim to take control. One game at a time is their motto to their end game.

The win against JCA showed the mentality that the Indians need to have all season.

“When we came in I said, this is it.

This is how it’s going to be all season,” Prosek said. “You want it? If you want it you have to go grab it.”

Raonic cramps up, loses to qualifier Harrison

NEW YORK – The cramping became so debilitating, Milos Raonic said, he couldn’t grip his racket properly.

The Wimbledon runner-up just last month, and seeded No. 5 at the U.S. Open, Raonic began to feel pain near his left wrist midway through the second set of what would become a stunning, 6-7 (4), 7-5, 7-5, 6-1 second-round loss to 120th-ranked American qualifier Ryan Harrison on Wednesday.

Eventually, the problem spread to Raonic’s right forearm. Then both thighs. Then his left hip flexor. Afterward, his back seized up when he tried to sling his equipment bag over a shoulder. No way to try to win a tennis match. Or to serve: That’s normally his most effective stroke, yet he double-faulted 15 times.

“It was just catching me all over,” Raonic said. “I started getting small (cramps) where I couldn’t hold the racket. I couldn’t switch grips from one point to the next. There were a few points where I would hold the racket with my left and try to stretch out my right hand in between shots – and

that’s not going to work.”

He was one of a trio of highly seeded players to exit Flushing Meadows on Day 3, although the other departures were less surprising.

No. 3 Garbine Muguruza, the French Open champion, made 38 unforced errors and bowed out, 7-5, 6-4 against Anastasija Sevastova at night. DETROIT – JaCoby Jones is the latest youngster to give the Detroit Tigers a boost in their push for a postseason spot.

Jones doubled twice in his second major league game, then dashed home for the winning run on a sacrifice fly

by Tyler Collins in the ninth inning to lift the Tigers over the White Sox, 3-2, Wednesday.

After a day after doubling, singling and driving in two runs in his debut, Jones scored twice to help the Tigers complete a three-game sweep.

The Tigers acquired Jones last year when they traded Joakim Soria to Pittsburgh. Around the same time, they also traded David Price and Yoenis Cespedes, receiving pitchers Daniel Norris, Matt Boyd and Michael Fulmer in those deals.

Fulmer has become a front-runner for rookie of the year this season, and Norris and Boyd also have made contributions. Now Jones is in the majors and off to a fine start.

Jones hit a leadoff double in the ninth against David Robertson (4-3) and advanced to third on Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s deep flyball.

Collins came up as a pinch-hitter and

was able to lift the ball to left-center.

Avisail Garcia made the catch, but his throw bounced before it even reached the mound.

Francisco Rodriguez (2-3) pitched the ninth.

Jose Abreu and Alex Avila homered on consecutive pitches in the fourth for the Sox. Sox ace Chris Sale allowed two runs and eight hits in eight innings against a Detroit lineup that was without Miguel Cabrera. The slugging first baseman sat out because his right ankle had been acting up.

The Sox were without Melky Cabrera, who missed the game because of stomach discomfort.

Verlander allowed two runs and three hits in seven innings for the Tigers, striking out nine.

“I thought both of them, Justin and [Sale], this is the kind of matchup that you expected it to be,” Sox manager Robin Ventura said.

Verlander retired the first eight hitters he faced, striking out six of them.

With two outs in the fourth, Abreu connected for his 19th homer of the year.

Avila followed with a drive to the bushes beyond the wall in center, giving the Sox a 2-0 lead against his former team.

A few jobs still on the line in preseason finale

pfinley@suntimes.com A look at which Bears will be playing for their professional lives in Thursday night’s fourth preseason game in Cleveland:

Fales passes?

At this time a year ago, David Fales fended off Zac Dysert – who was signed two days before the fourth exhibition – by playing the game of his life. Against the Browns, he completed 14-of-18 passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns, finishing with a quarterback rating of 134. Fales started the season as the Bears’ third quarterback and finished it as their backup, but still never threw an NFL pass.

He has the same opportunity to stick this year, but with far less momentum.

He seemed a likely cut candidate – he didn’t play in the second or third exhibition games – until Connor Shaw suffered a grisly broken leg Saturday.

The Bears didn’t sign a fourth quarterback just for the week this time around, meaning Fales will get most of the snaps against the Browns.

The lack of playing time was “obviously frustrating,” said the thirdyear quarterback, who didn’t even enter Saturday after Shaw was hurt.

“It’s nothing I can control,” he said.

“All I can worry about is myself, and focus on what I can do and keep trying to get better. It is frustrating. You want to go out there and play and get an opportunity.”

The lesson he learned from last year: relax.

“Just have fun and be decisive,” he said this week. “At that point, I kind of knew how the situation was panning out, and I really didn’t care, and I just went out and had fun.”

He let go of his worries.

“I was enjoying the game,” he said.

“It was an opportunity to play and put myself on tape. I was just excited.

Didn’t overthink it. Didn’t make it bigger than it was.”

Do well, and Fales could stick as the Bears’ third quarterback, be it as an inactive player on Sundays or a practice squad player.

Assuming the Bears keep Alshon Jeffery, Kevin White, Marc Mariani and Royal – and decide their best special teamer, Josh Bellamy, is worth hanging on to – three healthy players are likely fighting for one spot: seventh-round rookie Daniel Braverman, vet B.J. Daniels and Illinois State alum Cameron Meredith.

Daniels returned kicks Saturday for Deonte Thompson, who had hurt his ankle in New England and hasn’t practiced since. Marquess Wilson is on the physically-unable-to-perform list after breaking his foot in minicamp.

“That’s probably one of the deepest positions on the team,” coach John Fox said.

‘Leap of faith’

Nick Kwiatkoski needs Thursday more than any other Bears player – if he can play. The inside linebacker left practice July 30 with a hamstring injury and hasn’t practiced much since, although he returned to limited action this week.

The first of three Bears fourth-

round picks, his pedigree is too good to clear waivers. But the Bears still don’t know what they have in the West Virginia alum.

“Truth be told, we didn’t see a whole lot of him,” Fox said. “Obviously, we evaluated him on his college tape. Saw him in some of the offseason stuff. …

“He’s been in meetings. He’s been with us. But as far as our true evaluation, it’s a little bit of a leap of faith.”

Tight situation

Starter Zach Miller figures to sit Thursday, leaving the tight ends behind him to try to prove their worth for the fourth straight game. Vets Tony Moeaki and Rob Housler have been solid; Greg Scruggs and Khari Lee are purely blockers; and Ben Braunecker might see his first game action, exactly a month after leaving practice with an ankle injury. The undrafted rookie from Harvard could be practice squad-bound.

“Everyone does something different,” Miller said. “We kind of have a whole group of guys that can do things together.”

Still, the Bears figure to watch the cut lists for upgrades.

JCA to honor Olympian Murphy SUBMITTED REPORTS JOLIET – Former Joliet Catholic volleyball standout Kelly Murphy will be honored between the conclusion of Thursday’s sophomore match and the start of the varsity contest against Hinsdale South. The time of the ceremony is likely to be between 5:45 and 6 p.m.

A 6-foot-2 right-side hitter, Murphy helped lead the U.S. women to the bronze medal at the Rio Olympics, defeating the Netherlands 25-23, 2527, 25-22, 25-19. The 2007-08 Gatorade High School National Player of the Year, she made an impact in the medal round with five kills, a block kill, an ace and a dig against the Dutch.

JCA coach Christine Scheibe said of Murphy, who led the Angels to back-to-back trips downstate in 2005 and 2006, “I think it’s an amazing accomplishment. I’m sure in her mind she wanted the gold, but bronze is something to be very proud of and she’ll remember it the rest of her life.

“We will remember it, too. We’ll also never forget how it started with Kelly bringing home medals for fourth place and third place with us when she played like a state champion. She always plays like a champion.”

Coupled with the Washington Wide Things’ 2-0 loss at Windy City, the Joliet Slammers wrapped up the Frontier League East title Tuesday night with a 5-2 victory over the Lake Erie Crushers.

The Frontier League season does not end until Sunday, but the Slammers know they will enter the fourteam playoffs as the No. 2 seed.

Right-hander Liam O’Sullivan has been the big man on the mound all season for Joliet (50-42), and he was again in the clincher. He went 62⁄3 innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs while walking two and striking out five.

Zach Hirsch relieved with two outs in the seventh and shut down the Crushers the rest of the way. He allowed two hits, no walks and struck out three.

The Slammers went ahead, 2-0, in the second inning as Mike Garza singled and Zarley Zalewski hit a two-run homer. Lake Erie scored once in the fourth to make it 2-1.

Joliet went up, 3-1, in the seventh as Garza and Zalewski singled and Casey Fletcher hit a sacrifice fly. The Crushers got that run back and chased O’Sullivan in the bottom of the seventh, but Hirsch prevented further damage.

In the ninth, the Slammers added two insurance runs. Carter Bell singled and, after an error, Joe Staley singled home a run. Fletcher then singled, and Phil Bates singled in the final run.

The Slammers have their final road game of the season Thursday night at Lake Erie before returning home to face Traverse City in a promotion-filled weekend series. The Sunday season finale at Silver Cross Field will begin at 5:05 p.m., with a fireworks show after the game.

Stephen Saporta found a loving God at the pool table

JOLIET – Joliet attorney Stephen Saporta isn’t proud of the first time Tom “Dr. Cue” Rossman, an ESPN and world master trick-shot champion, visited his house for dinner and a friendly game of pool.

“I was so competitive, I wanted to destroy him,” Saporta said.

However, Rossman, the ambassador for amateur pool for the American Poolplayers Association, shrugged off the rude behavior.

“I knew God was working in him, not just in the game but in life,” Rossman said. “When he saw the connection in the game – spiritually – we made a dedicated effort to talk more.”

Saporta shares his spiritual growth through pool in several essays in “Rack Up a Victory: A ‘Special’ Manual for Your Billiard Journey,” which Rossman authored and Saporta helped edit.

The faith-driven manual is part pool instruction – including practice and perception – and part spirituality.

The book is free to anyone wishing to download a copy.

As the founder of RACK Vision Outreach, Rossman uses pool to connect players with God. The ministry’s motto is: “To win is great. To play is greater. To love is the greatest.”

The motto is based on 1 Corinthians 13:13, “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”

Rossman estimates 50 million people worldwide play pool. In 1987, Rossman had a vision to bring the Gospel to these players. However, not until six years ago could Rossman and his wife, Marty, also known as “Ms. Cue,” do so. Rossman started slowly, by offering morning Bible studies at various pool events.

“My wife and I did shows all over the world,” Rossman said of his pre-ministry days. “But because of our secular contract, I wasn’t able to speak about Jesus or God very much.”

Whether people read Rossman’s collection of essays for the pool tips or the spirituality, Rossman has one message to give.

“Hopefully people come to the realization that it’s not about us, it’s about him,” Rossman said. “Whatever gifts

A competitive pool player since he was 17, Saporta, now 54, had met Rossman for the second time in 2011 when Rossman gave a trick-shot exhibition at a Darien pool venue. Meeting pool players like Rossman always thrilled Saporta.

“These are masters of the game,” Saporta said. “They are like heroes.”

Rossman often accepted challenge matches at these exhibitions. That night, it was Saporta.

“I wanted so badly to beat this guy because he’s a professional player, but he has nothing to prove,” Saporta said.

“He just plays with you.”

Saporta won and felt stunned that Rossman took joy in his competitor’s

victory. That wasn’t how Saporta played.

“I’m a very flamboyant, emotional player – at least I was,” Saporta said.

“It was my way of blowing off steam and having fun. At the same time, if I lost, I took it very hard.”

That second game, played while Rossman was a guest in Saporta’s home, did not go as well.

“If I missed a shot, I would curse and hit the butt of the cue stick on the floor,” Saporta said. “He was just looking at me and saying, ‘Relax. It’s supposed to be a pleasant evening.’”

Saporta said Rossman asked him if he’d seen his “Enjoy the Roll” video, and Saporta said he had. He recalled how Rossman handled hecklers at his exhibitions, especially when Rossman missed a shot: He laughed along with them.

Over time, an email correspondence developed between Saporta and Rossman.

“If I won, I shared with him, but more often than not I shared when I lost because I needed somewhere to vent. If I didn’t win, the game wasn’t fun,” Saporta said. “My inability to deal with what he called ‘a loss on paper’ started to get me to think about the game in different terms. And I still have ambiguity about it.”

Saporta feels the drive to win is a natural part of his life. Clients hire him to win their cases, he said.

“So by definition I have to be very competitive, aggressive where necessary,” Saporta said. “I’m results-oriented. It’s not a parlor game like pool is. It’s my profession.”

Saporta said he learned from Rossman how “losses on paper” are really victories in disguise, an opportunity to learn from another’s well-practiced skill and take joy in their wins. Saporta said he learned how the execution of each stroke can glorify God. But even more fundamentally, Saporta learned that love really is the greatest gift of all.

“When talking about pool, it’s the love of the game,” Saporta said. “If you’re no longer able to win, or even able to play because of physical limitation, you can at least observe the game because you love it.”

That concept of love has spilled into Saporta’s love of the law. An attorney needs mental acuity to educate people, advocate for them and defend them in court, he said. But what if one becomes physically unable to do so?

It’s still about love.

“Without love for a sense of right and wrong, practicing law becomes meaningless,” Saporta said. “And winning as an objective in and of itself at all costs is likewise meaningless.”

FAITH BRIEFS Two Catholic churches in Joliet unite for celebrations

JOLIET – St. Mary Nativity and Holy Cross Parishes of Joliet will host feast day celebrations for their parishes.

These are the Nativity of our Blessed Mother Mary on Sept. 8 and the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on Sept. 14.

Features of the week-long celebration include novenas, cemetery rosary walks in both parishes’ cemeteries, feast day Masses and activities and treats for the children in the day school, Polish school and religious education program.

In a unification of both parishes, a special celebration will be held on Sept. 11. This will begin after both parishes’ 10:30 a.m. Masses, approximately 11:30 am, with a Eucharistic Procession from Holy Cross Church to St. Mary Nativity Church grounds and processing back to Holy Cross for benediction.

Universalist Unitarian Church to host documentary screening on Selma voting rights march

JOLIET – UUCJ will host a free screening at 7 p.m. on Sept. 1 of the Southern Poverty Law Center documentary “Selma: The Bridge to the Ballot,” the true story of the 1965 Selma-to-Montgomery voting rights march.

Narrated by Academy Award-winning actress Octavia Spencer, the documentary by the SPLC’s Teaching Tolerance project tells an important story not touched on by the Hollywood feature –

United Methodist Church of New Lenox takes VBS to Trinity UMC NEW LENOX – After completing a successful week of Vacation Bible School at the United Methodist Church of New Lenox, the Rev. Matthew Krings and 16 volunteers took its Deep Sea Discovery VBS to the children of Cristo es el Camino at its sister church, Trinity United Methodist Church in Joliet.

Volunteers from Cristo es el Camino and Ingalls Park, their pastors, and 25 children were involved in the threeday VBS, July 19 to July 21. The children enjoyed singing songs, making crafts, participating in science projects, hearing Bible stories and playing

outdoor games.

Despite hot temperatures, the volunteers concluded it was a wonderful week of sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with the children.

The hugs and shouts of “See you next year” were most rewarding as the volunteers departed on the final day of VBS. The United Methodist Church of New Lenox and the Cristo es el Camino church continue to strengthen their bonds through shared activities.

The next sister church event with the children will be the Advent Family Night on Dec. 4.

MMR vaccine greatly reduces chances of son getting mumps Dear Dr. K: A few students at my son’s college have been diagnosed with mumps. My son has had all of his vaccines, including the MMR. Could he still get mumps?

Dear Reader: Mumps is an infection that causes swelling of the parotid glands in front of each ear. It is caused by a virus that spreads from person to person through coughs, sneezes and saliva. It also can spread through contact with contaminated items and surfaces. Once the mumps virus enters the body, it passes into the bloodstream and can spread to many different glands, as well as the brain.

People with mumps are contagious during a period that begins 48 hours before and ends six to nine days after the beginning of symptoms.

Thanks to the mumps vaccine, which was introduced in the 1960s, the number of annual cases has decreased by more than 99 percent. The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is given in two doses.

The first dose is given at 12 through 15 months of age. The second dose is given at 4 through 6 years of age.

The vaccine prevents most, but not all, cases of mumps and complications caused by the disease. People who have received two doses of the MMR vaccine are about nine times less likely to get mumps than unvaccinated people. However, some people who received two doses of MMR still can get mumps, especially if they have prolonged close contact with someone who has the disease. Still, a vaccinated person who gets mumps will likely have less severe illness than an unvaccinated person.

In about 15 to 20 percent of patients, mumps does not cause any symptoms.

Symptoms of mumps infection may include fever, headache, sore throat, muscle aches, poor appetite and malaise (a general feeling of sickness). As I mentioned, the mumps virus causes pain and swelling of the parotid glands in front of the earlobes; the swelling is called parotitis. This can make chewing and swallowing very uncomfortable.

Mumps parotitis can occur very rapidly.

I know, and not just because I’m a doctor, but because I’ve had it. One afternoon I felt lousy: my muscles ached, my energy was poor and I didn’t feel much like dinner. I went to bed early. Sometime in the middle of the night I woke up because it felt like my face was resting on a walnut someone had placed on the mattress. The “walnut” was my parotid gland. Fortunately, I recovered without more serious complications.

By getting the mumps vaccine, your son has greatly reduced his risk of ever getting the mumps. The vaccine is not perfect, and so his risk is not zero. But you can tell him from me: Be grateful there’s a vaccine. The virus got me before there was a vaccine – and it was no fun.

Declarer cashed dummy’s spade ace and took his three red-suit winners. Then he played a club to dummy’s ace. No honor appeared, but South returned to his hand with a spade and led another club, covering West’s 10 with dummy’s jack. Yes, it lost to East’s king, but on his red-suit return, declarer sluffed his last club and ruffed on the board.
