JOLIET – A dispute over proceeds from an alleged child care scam led to the fatal shooting of a Joliet man trying to protect his son, according to testimony given at the start of the criminal trial for the man charged in the incident.

Just minutes after midnight Dec. 6, 2014, Johnny Lockhart, 59, was slain and his son, Ledontia Lockhart, was shot in the back while Aloysius they were in the alley be- Alexander hind their apartment in the 500 block of North Chicago Street.

Aloysius Alexander, 31, who is charged with murder and aggravated battery began a bench trial Monday before Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes.

Alexander, whose friends all call him “June,” and Brian Gregory accompanied Gregory’s cousin, Mike Smith, to confront the Lockharts after the father and son argued with Smith’s girlfriend, Miya Morris, according to trial testimony.

Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes overturned Jennifer L. DelPrete’s murder conviction, but also granted the state 30 days to determine whether they will appeal her decision. Will County State’s Attorney spokesman Charles Pelkie said Monday that an appeal will be filed.

Experts said Isabella had suffered brain injuries and DelPrete was charged with aggravated battery. Isabella died in November 2003.

Alessio Policandriotes convicted DelPrete during a bench trial in 2005 and sentenced her to 20 years in prison.

hand,” Ledontia Lockhart said. “My father told me I was shot and tossed me off him so I wouldn’t [get shot] more times. I hit the stairs and blacked out for a minute.”

Smith heard another shot as he and Gregory ran to his Buick. When Alexander got in the car a moment later, Smith asked him, “Why would you do that?”

“He said, ‘I don’t know. Shut up and drive,’” Smith testified. “I repeated it and he said, ‘Shut up and drive, [expletive].’”

“What did you do [then]?,” Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Derek Ewanic asked Smith.

“I shut up and drove,” Smith said.

Smith testified he did not know Alexander was armed when he picked him up.

Ledontia Lockhart said after the shooting he crawled up the stairs to his apartment to have his father’s girlfriend call 911 and crawled back down to find his father unresponsive.

Ledontia Lockhart, who was shot in the lower back, told Joliet Police Sgt. Scott Cammack that “June” shot him before he was loaded into an ambulance, Cammack testified.

The trial will continue Tuesday.

According to Smith, Morris claimed Ledontia Lockhart was providing child care for her three children when he was not actually doing so. When Ledontia Lockhart was sent checks by the state, he and Morris would split the money.

In November 2014, Morris accused Ledontia Lockhart of taking a $400 money order from her car. Defense attorney Paul Napolski said a copy of the money order shows Lockhart signed and cashed it, though Lockhart denied that when he testified Monday.

Smith, Gregory and Alexander went to the Lockharts’ apartment and Smith and Ledontia Lockhart “squared off” to fight at the bottom of the porch stairs, both men testified. Johnny Lockhart then came down the stairs and told the unwanted visitors to knock off the noise and leave.

“Ledontia [started] leading his father back upstairs. [Johnny] turned a little and I heard a loud bang from behind me,” Smith testified.

“More likely than not ... no reasonable juror would have found her guilty of murder beyond a reasonable doubt,” Kennelly wrote.

Advocates and researchers looking into wrongful convictions also obtained a letter written by Romeoville Police Department Deputy Chief Ken Kroll through the Freedom of Information Act. Kroll wrote the pathologist who performed Isabella’s autopsy had doubts she’d been shaken or abused, according to the Northwestern University Medill Justice Project’s website.

DelPrete was released from prison in 2014 while pursuing her appeal.

BIKEWAY PLAN IN THE WORKS Public invited to review Forest Preserve District plan, provide feedback

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Phil Furmanski lives in Plainfield and is an avid bicyclist.

When he rides his bike, he usually pedals down designated paths on the west ends of Plainfield and Joliet. He also rides in Ottawa and Morris.

“I try to ride in low-traffic areas,” said Furmanski, president of the Joliet Bicycle Club.

In the Joliet area, the Centennial Trail/I&M Canal Trail and Old Plank Road Trail are popular areas, Furmanski said. These are two of the county’s five designated bikeway corridors.

Roadways, bridges and utilities will be enhanced and expanded as development continues to spread throughout the county. With that comes a need for public outdoor recreation space to see the same attention.

The Forest Preserve District of Will County announced recently that the first Will County Bikeway Plan will be available for public review and comment beginning Wednesday at ReconnectWithNature.org.

The bikeway plan identifies areas where nonmotorized transportation opportunities can be expanded in Will County and beyond. Greenways, roadways and utility corridors were

While some bikeway corridors already exist in the county, a comprehensive planning guide was needed to improve clarity between multiple user groups and levels of government. The goals of the plan are to expand transportation choices, en-

After the public comment period ends Sept. 30, the plan will go to the district’s board of commissioners for approval, which is expected at its Nov. 10 meeting.

With so many government entities in a county, Andrew Hawkins, the forest preserve district’s director of planning and development, said development plans don’t always line up from one entity to another.

fsarver@shawmedia.com Eisenhower Academy in Joliet and Lincoln-Way East High School in Frankfort have been chosen as the top Will County public schools by Chicago magazine.

The monthly magazine ranked top public schools in the Chicago region by attendance, spending per pupil, 5Essentials, ACT, PARCC and other factors. The data were taken from Chicago Public Schools and the Illinois State Board of Education.

Eisenhower was No. 1 for elementary schools and Lincoln-Way East was No. 1 for high schools.

The last time Chicago magazine ranked public schools was in 2012 and Eisenhower Academy came in second behind Fry Elementary School in Naperville. Lincoln-Way East High School was still No. 1.

Eisenhower Principal Wendy Wolgan said the school staff were excited about the ranking and proud of the students, teachers and support the school receives.

“It’s really our collaborative community of teachers who work hard every day,” she said.

The school is a magnet program within Joliet Public Schools District 86 and offers students a variety of programs rooted in Problem-Based Learning with enhanced technology

Lincoln-Way East Principal Sharon Michalak said the high school was pleased and honored with its ranking. Students and teachers work hard for their achievement, she said.

“It’s nice that it came out or showed through the testing that has occurred recently,” she said, referring to ACT exam achievements.

The class of 2016 at East and three other schools earned record high ACT scores at Lincoln-Way District 210.

Michalak said the parents are supportive of the educational process at East, and teachers work hard to continue their own professional development.

“They’re constantly attuned to changes in their curriculum, meeting the core standards and looking to see different ways, different methodologies of delivering the curriculum so students learn best,” she said of the teachers.

Nick Offerman to sign copies of latest book in hometown

mmallory@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Minooka native Nick Offerman has written his third book.

Offerman will return 1 p.m. Oct. 23 to his hometown for a signing event at Minooka Community High School Central Campus, 301 S. Wabena Ave. The event will be hosted by the Three Rivers Public Library District and The Book Stall, a Winnetka-based independent bookstore.

Best known for his role as Ron Swanson on the NBC sitcom “Parks and Recreation,” which concluded in early 2015, Offerman continues to appear in multiple shows and movies each year. He also played Karl Weathers in season two of the critically acclaimed FX series “Fargo.”

When Offerman isn’t acting, he’s busy with his two other passions – woodworking and writing. His third book will allow him to combine them both.

“Good Clean Fun: Misadventures in Sawdust at Offerman Woodshop,” is a collaborative effort between Offerman and the rest of his Los Angeles-based woodshop collective. Most, if not all, members of the woodshop have written a chapter for the book, Three Rivers Public Library District Executive Director Laurie Offerman said.

Laurie, who is Nick’s sister, said her brother has also added chapters written by their father, Ric Offerman, and brother, Matt Offerman. Their father passed down a love and talent for woodworking to his children. Ric and Matt still reside in Minooka and work

It’s become a tradition for Nick to return home for a signing corresponding to each book he has written.

In 2013, he signed copies of his first book, “Paddle Your Own Canoe: One Man’s Fundamentals for Delicious Living,” at Minooka Elementary School. In 2015, he signed copies of his second book, “Gumption: Relighting the Torch of Freedom with America’s Gutsiest Troublemakers,” at the high school.

This time, Nick, Ric and Matt will each sign copies of the book, which hits shelves Oct. 18. Laurie said it’s because of Nick’s strong sense of loyalty that he returns home during each book tour.

“This is where he grew up,” Laurie said. “Our whole family is still here, except for him. He recognizes it’s a such a big part of who he is.”

Anyone interested in reserving a ticket to the book signing in Minooka can call The Book Stall at 847-446-8880.

Books can be pre-ordered through the store or purchased at the signing.

The Book Stall is also hosting another signing at 7 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Music Box Theater in Chicago.

The district has identified 14 corridors throughout the county, most of which are not yet built. These corridors will serve as the backbone of nonvehicular transportation, Hawkins said.

One countywide diagram, on page 38 of the bikeway plan, indicates in green the existing corridors and in purple the future corridors. Hawkins said the hope of the district is municipalities countywide will adopt these designations and install trails that correspond with them when the time comes.

Furmanski, who has been a member of the Joliet Bicycle Club for four years and president for two years, said it is crucial to have bike corridors and bikeways established and constructed as development continues.

“It’s essential to a growing community,” Furmanski said.

He noted there’s fringe benefits to bicycling, particularly on bikeways, in addition to exercise. Bicycling is one way to meet people and get more connected to nature.

Joliet woman co-founded city’s first FM station, had ‘a very good voice for radio’

aschier@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet radio lost one of its founding voices last week.

Mary Jane Pohlers, a lifelong Joliet resident who started the city’s first FM radio station with her late husband, Al Pohlers, died Wednesday. She was 97.

“She had a very good voice for radio,” said her nephew, Robert Baudek, who for 10 years managed WAJP, the station Al and Mary Jane founded.

Before they went into radio or were married, Mary Jane got a job in about 1940 working for Al as a secretary at Pohlers Machine Works on Ruby Street.

Later in the decade, Al started “Al Pohlers’ Memory Hour,” a Sunday afternoon radio show featuring local talent and co-hosted by Mary Jane, Baudek said. The program played on four AM stations in the area, and was originally broadcast from the machine works, before the show eventually relocated in the 1950s.

Then, on Easter Sunday of 1960, the pair took their own station on the air.

It was called 93.5 WAJP-FM and offered easy listening while also promoting

patriotism and civic duty. The station broadcast Memorial Day and Veterans Day parades, as well as Joliet City Council meetings, and was known for its Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve request shows.

Every afternoon, Al and Mary Jane would take to the airwaves from 4:30 to 6 p.m. for “Polka Time,” a program where callers could recognize loved ones’

birthdays, graduations, anniversaries and the like, and listeners could hear a combination of commendations and polka music.

“Polka music was popular then,” Baudek said.

The show sometimes featured local musicians, but at the heart of it were Al and Mary Jane.

“They worked it as a team,” Baudek said.

The couple did everything together, Baudek said, and when Al died in 1975, Mary Jane took her voice off the air. But she did continue as owner of the station, which covered a roughly 35-mile radius around Joliet, for another decade.

“It wasn’t the same without him,” Baudek said.

Even though owning a radio station had been Al’s dream, Mary Jane supported it. Once the station was up and running, they came to share the responsibility and dedication that came with operating WAJP. “They both passionately ran it,” Baudek said.

Services and visitation were held Saturday at St. Mary Nativity Catholic Church in Joliet.

such as the annual New Year’s Day “Polar Plunge,” when a small pool would be set up in front of the bar and people would jump into it and “Champagne Corner” on the same day when champagne toasts were made every hour on the hour.

The plunge was always dedicated to Theresa Lang and the champagne toasts to Carol Koc, both friends who had passed away. Too many friends have passed away over the years, Polesel said.

“We did lose many good friends,” she said. “If they could watch over us in heaven or say a toast for us on Sunday – everyone was so special to us.”

JOLIET – The party ends this weekend at the Just One More bar.

The bar with the Jimmy Buffett theme and beach fun atmosphere will hold a weekend celebration to mark its final last call after 18 years at the corner of Raynor Avenue and Theodore Street.

Marlene Polesel choked back tears just talking about the final weekend at the bar she started with fellow owner Darren Melvin in 1998.

“We made the best friends. We gained friends. We lost friends,” Polesel said. “It’s been kind of a ‘Cheers’ bar. That’s why there will be a lot of tears Sunday.”

The party starts Friday afternoon and ends with a farewell toast at 1 a.m.

Monday, which is near the end of Sunday night business.

In between, there will be live bands, karaoke and baggo on the outdoor patio. Dart and softball players with old trophies at the bar are encouraged to come and get them while they last.

It should be lots of fun in between some crying.

“It’s very bittersweet. It’s a piece of life that’s going to be gone,” Polesel

said.

But after 18 years in the bar business, which Polesel noted is a pretty good run for a bar, “it’s just time,” she said.

The bar opened with the Jimmy Buffett theme.

“We kind of wanted to get the Parrot Heads in there,” Polesel said. “We go to his concerts every year and have a group go out of the bar.”

Polesel said she and Melvin are “beach people. We kind of brought the beach to Joliet.”

All that comes to an end this weekend.

A new bar with the apt name One More Time is slated to open under a new owner sometime in September, but it will have a sports theme.

For the farewell weekend, the bar has been raffling off “Just No More – The Party’s Over” T-shirts and will give away koozies with the same inscription to the first 25 people who come in each day of the Labor Day weekend. The T-shirts also are being sold for $10.

On Saturday, The Sumthins will perform at 2 p.m. Johnny Russler will do a Jimmy Buffett tribute from 6 to 8 p.m.

Joliet festival to be held Labor Day weekend Family event celebrates 12 years

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Harvey Brooks Foundation will host a festival this weekend featuring food, music and performances.

The 12th annual Tony Ray Labor Day Community Festival will be held Friday through Sunday outside the Joliet nonprofit at 100 McDonough St. in Joliet. The festival will have gospel music, children’s activities and special guests.

Christina Bias, a Harvey Brooks Foundation volunteer, said the festival is geared to be a family event.

“It’s just fellowshipping with different people in the area,” Bias said.

Bias has said the festival was started by the late Tony Ray, who worked for eight years to bring hope and encouragement to the Joliet area.

From 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, the festival will have a talent showcase that will

feature performances of up-and-coming artists in the Chicago area, said Tempie Bates, Harvey Brooks Foundation’s executive director.

From noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, there will be the Youth Zone event. One of the focuses of the event will be health and wellness, and it will include an appearance from Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center staff, Bates said.

The Peter Claver Center will be at the festival Saturday to do a karate demonstration and promote positive avenues for children, she said.

The festival’s Community Day will take place 3 to 10 p.m. Sunday and feature local faith-based ministries that will share what they’ve been working on and perform services, she said.

The HERALD–NEWS NEW LENOX – A fire at a two-story home Sunday in New Lenox is under investigation.

The New Lenox Fire Protection District responded to a fire about 11:15 a.m. in the 600 block of Turtle Dove Lane, according to a district news release. All residents and pets were able to get out of the home safely.

Fire officials said there is signifi-

cant damage to the home, but a total cost of damage is not available yet.

Assisting the fire protection district were the fire agencies for Manhattan, East Joliet, Frankfort, Mokena, Palos Heights, Homer, Orland and Elwood.

“We want to thank all of the area fire departments that helped us during [Sunday’s] fire,” Adam Riegel, New Lenox fire deputy chief, said in the news release.

JOLIET – Trinity Services’ Horticulture Program will have a variety of decorative fall plants available for purchase during its sale Sept. 15 to 30 at 100 N. Gougar Road in Joliet, according to a Trinity news release.

Program participants are preparing mums, asters, straw bales, Indian corn, ornamental kale and cabbage, and a variety of decorative and hanging baskets. They will be available for pickup beginning Sept. 15.

Edward A. Dik, age 74, of Mokena, passed away Sunday, Aug. 28, 2016.

Survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Evelyn (nee Dykhuis). Loving father of Kristine (Jeff Taylor) and Steven Dik (Mary). Cherished grandfather of Carson and Camryn Dik. Dear brother of John, Sandra and Roger. Dearest uncle of many nieces and nephews.

Sandy passed away suddenly at the age of 88, at the Pinebrook Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Venice, FL. Sandy was born and raised in Manchester, England.

Sandy immigrated in the 1940s to the United States, where she met Wayne Knudson and married. They settled in the Joliet and Minooka area, where they raised five children. She was an avid bowler, loved music, dancing and shopping.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother and a sister in England; and also the love of her life, Wayne Knudson.

She leaves behind five children, Paul (Rachael) Gordon of Groveland, California, David (Marie) Knudson of Morris, Dawn (David) Mitchell of Rotonda, Florida, Deborah {Torn} Esler of Diamond and Darin Knudson of Morris; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

In a celebration of her life, a private ceremony will be held for the family.

Survived by a sister-in-law, Dorothy Slejko; and her nieces and nephews, Barbara Slejko Donisch, Cenka (Michael) Kaminski, Stephen Bozich, Russell Giacometti and George (Laura) Slejko. Many great nieces, great nephews as well as a grand-niece and grand-nephew also survive.

Josephine “Jo” was fondly known as Miss Slejko to the many students she “had the privilege of teaching” in her 43-year career.

Josephine felt that each day on earth was a gift. She served as an inspiration and positive role model to her students, family and friends.

Actor Gene Wilder, star of Mel Brooks movies, dies at 83

The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Gene Wilder, the frizzy-haired actor who brought his deft comedic touch to such unforgettable roles as the neurotic accountant in “The Producers” and the mad scientist of “Young Frankenstein,” has died. He was 83.

Wilder’s nephew said Monday that the actor and writer died late Sunday at his home in Stamford, Connecticut, from complications from Alzheimer’s disease.

Jordan Walker-Pearlman said in a statement that Wilder was diagnosed with the disease three years ago, but kept the condition private so as not to disappoint fans.

“He simply couldn’t bear the idea of one less smile in the world,” Walker-Pearlman said.

Wilder started his acting career on the stage, but millions knew him from his work in the movies, especially his collaborations with Mel Brooks on “The Producers,” “Blazing Saddles” and “Young Frankenstein.” The last film – with Wilder playing a California-born descendant of the mad scientist, insisting that his name is pronounced “Frahn-ken-SHTEEN” – was co-written by Brooks and Wilder.

“Gene Wilder, one of the truly great talents of our time, is gone,” Brooks wrote in a statement Monday. “He blessed every film we did together with his special magic and he blessed my life with his friendship. He will be so missed.”

With his unkempt hair and big, buggy eyes, Wilder was a master at playing panicked characters caught up in schemes that only a madman such as Brooks could devise, whether reviving a monster in “Young Frankenstein” or bilking Broadway in “The Producers.”

Brooks would call him “God’s perfect prey, the victim in all of us.”

But he also knew how to keep it cool as the boozing gunslinger in “Blazing Saddles” or the charming candy man in the children’s favorite “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” His craziest role: the therapist having an affair with a sheep in Woody Allen’s “Everything You Wanted to Know About Sex.” Wilder was close friends with Richard Pryor and their contrasting personas – Wilder uptight, Pryor loose – were ideal for comedy. They co-starred in four films: “Silver Streak,” “Stir Crazy,” “See No Evil, Hear No Evil” and “Another You.” And they created several memorable scenes, particularly when Pryor provided Wilder with directions on how to “act black” as they tried to avoid police in “Silver Streak.”

But Wilder would insist in a 2013 interview that he was no comedian. He told interviewer Robert Osborne it was

“What a comic, what a funny guy, all that stuff! And I’m not. I’m really not. Except in a comedy in films,” Wilder said. “But I make my wife laugh once or twice in the house, but nothing special. But when people see me in a movie and it’s funny then they stop and say things to me about ‘how funny you were.’ But I don’t think I’m that funny.

I think I can be in the movies.”

In 1968, Wilder received an Oscar nomination for his work in Brooks’ “The Producers.” He played the introverted Leo Bloom, an accountant who discovers the liberating joys of greed and corruption as he and Max Bialystock (Zero Mostel) conceive a Broadway flop titled “Springtime For Hitler” and plan to flee with the money raised for the show’s production. Matthew Broderick played Wilder’s role in the 2001 Broadway stage revival of the show.

Although they collaborated on film, Wilder and Brooks met through the theater. Wilder was in a play with Brooks’ then-future wife, Anne Bancroft, who introduced the pair backstage in 1963.

Wilder, a Milwaukee native, was born Jerome Silberman on June 11, 1933. His father was a Russian emigre, his mother was of Polish descent. When he was 6, Wilder’s mother suffered a

heart attack that left her a semi-invalid. He soon began improvising comedy skits to entertain her, the first indication of his future career.

He started taking acting classes at age 12 and continued performing and taking lesson through college. In 1961, Wilder became a member of Lee Strasberg’s prestigious Actor’s Studio in Manhattan.

That same year, he made both his off-Broadway and Broadway debuts.

He won the Clarence Derwent Award, given to promising newcomers, for the Broadway work in Graham Greene’s comedy “The Complaisant Lover.”

He used his new name, Gene Wilder, for the off-Broadway and Broadway roles. He lifted the first name from the character Eugene Gant in Thomas Wolfe’s “Look Back, Homeward Angel,” while the last name was clipped from playwright Thornton Wilder. A key break came when he co-starred with Bancroft in Bertolt Brecht’s “Mother Courage,” and met Brooks, her future husband.

“I was having trouble with one little section of the play, and he gave me tips on how to act. He said, ‘That’s a song and dance. He’s proselytizing about communism. Just skip over it, sing and dance over it, and get on to the good stuff.’ And he was right,” Wilder later

explained.

Before starring in “The Producers,” he had a small role as the hostage of gangsters in the 1967 classic “Bonnie and Clyde.” He peaked in the mid-1970s with the twin Brooks hits “Blazing Saddles” and “Young Frankenstein.”

He went on to write several screenplays and direct several films. In 1982, while making the generally forgettable “Hanky Panky,” he fell in love with costar Gilda Radner. They were married in 1984, and co-starred in two Wilder-penned films: “The Woman in Red” and “Haunted Honeymoon.”

After Radner died of ovarian cancer in 1989, Wilder spent much of his time after promoting cancer research and opened a support facility for cancer patients. In 1991, he testified before Congress about the need for increased testing for cancer.

That same year, he appeared in his final film role: “Another You” with Pryor.

Wilder worked mostly in television in recent years, including appearances on “Will & Grace” – including one that earned him an Emmy Award for outstanding guest actor – and a starring role in the short-lived sitcom “Something Wilder.” In 2015, he was among the voices in the animated “The Yo Gabba Gabba! Movie 2.”

Cook County issues nearly 10,000 same-sex marriage licenses

CHICAGO – Cook County officials said they expect to issue the 10,000th marriage license to a same-sex couple this week.

Cook County Clerk David Orr held a news conference Monday morning along with state lawmakers and civil right groups to mark the milestone. He said that as of Monday morning the clerk’s office has issued 9,990 marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

The Illinois Legislature approved a gay marriage law in late 2013, making Illinois the 16th state to allow same-sex marriages. The law took effect in June 2014.

Rauner said such a large expansion could threaten the child care program because without funding to go along with it, parents could see long waitlists or be asked to pay higher copays.

The U.S. Supreme Court legalized gay marriage in June 2015.

Illinois trying to collect 30-year-old overpayments

SPRINGFIELD – The Department of Human Services is still trying to collect money from overpayments made nearly 30 years ago from its Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, once more commonly known as food stamps.

The State Journal-Register reported that McLeansboro resident Sue Good received a letter from the department about a month ago asking her to repay $242 in an overpayment that occurred from August through November in 1985.

“Do you think anybody has some kind of paperwork (from 30 years ago)?” Good said. “I think if you had 30-year-old papers, you would be like ‘I think you need to call “Hoarders” (the TV show).’ ” Alex Jordan, the department’s director of fiscal services and chief of the Bureau of Collections, said federal regulations and state law require that an effort be made to recoup the money.

“There’s no statute of limitations on DHS debt,” Jordan said. “We have to follow the regulations. If we do give benefits out to individuals we shouldn’t, the feds expect us to recover those benefits so ultimately down the road they’re available to other individuals.”

The Associated Press JERSEY CITY, N.J. – It’s been the driving issue of Donald Trump’s campaign. Build a wall along the southern border. Make Mexico pay for it. And expel everyone living in the U.S. illegally with the help of a “deportation force.”

Ten weeks before the election, however, buffeted by conflicting advice from aides and advisers, Trump has seemed to be in full indecision mode.

At a Fox News town hall tall taping last week, in the face of pressing questions, he proceeded to poll the audience at length on the fate of an estimated 11 million people.

Trump is now planning a major speech Wednesday, during which he’s expected to finally clarify his stance. Supporters are hoping for a strong, decisive showing. But for critics, many already disposed to vote against him, his wavering on what has been his signature issue seems like a warning that he’s unable to handle a central element of any president’s job – making decisions.

It also underscores how little his Republican campaign has invested in the nitty-gritty of outlining what he would do as president, especially when compared with the more detailed plans of his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton.

“It’s just puzzling,” said Lanhee Chen, who has served as a policy adviser to several Republican presidential candidates. “This is the issue

on which he rose to prominence in the primary and the issue on which he continues to stake much of his campaign.”

From the start, Trump has never been the kind of candidate to pore over thick policy books.

Indeed, he has mocked Clinton on the subject.

“She’s got people that sit in cubicles writing policy all day. Nothing’s ever going to happen.

It’s just a waste of paper,” he told Time Magazine in June. “My voters don’t care and the public doesn’t care. They know you’re going to do a good job once you’re there.”

To date, Trump’s campaign has posted just seven policy proposals on his website, totaling just over 9,000 words. There are 38 on Clinton’s “issues” page, ranging from efforts to cure Alzheimer’s disease to Wall Street and criminal justice reform, and her campaign boasts that it has now released 65 policy fact sheets, totaling 112,735 words.

“I’ve laid out the best I could, the specific plans and ideas that I want to pursue as your president because I have this old-fashioned idea,” Clinton said during a recent speech in Colorado. “When you run for president, you ought to tell people what you want to do as their president.”

Trump’s new campaign manager, Kellyanne Conway, has said she’s pushing her boss to get more specific. Yet his positions on a host of issues remain vague at best.

$8.38), the largest wireless system in Russia and Ukraine, with $6.9 million in 2015 revenues, had a trailing 12-month dividend of 82 cents, which was recently reduced to 61 cents, and it now yields 7.2 percent. MBT owns 32 percent of Russia’s mobile communications market and a 37 percent share of the revenue in the data market.

MBT expects to earn 80 cents a share this year, and its 994 million shares trade at a low 11 times earnings, with

MBT peddles mobile and fixedline voice and data telecom services, data transfer, broadband, pay TV and various value-added services, as well as phone accessories. The shares traded neatly between the $18 and $23 level for several years, but then oil prices collapsed. Then MBT’s share value continued to be punished for Russia’s numerous macro problems – e.g., its hostilities with Ukraine and Western sanctions. Despite this fact, MBT’s business operations have held up modestly well. Because the shares trade at 35 percent of their previous high, the people at this broker’s firm think MBT is an undervalued stock. They may be right.

In the past couple of years, MBT has attractively grown its wireless business and reduced its churn rate by 21 percent. The company now has over 50 percent of its wireless base on smartphones, which has led to a 22 percent annual increase in data revenue. And during the past several

years, MBT has built out a fiber network in Moscow that allows it to meet the growing demand for converged services and faster broadband speeds.

MBT continues to grow faster than the market, and its large size (by Russian standards, not U.S. standards) generates greater free cash flow than its competitors, while management uses that money to maintain Russia’s highest-quality network. Russia’s telecom service stinks.

But MBT is known for its good service, infrequently lost calls and good connectivity. Resultantly, MBT’s superior network attracts the most valuable customers, who generate higher average revenues.

“The Russian 5” are the muscle determining the success of MBT. They are Andrey Anatolyevich Dubovskov, the CEO; Alexey Valerievich Kronya, the CFO; Ruslan Ibragimov, the vice president of corporate and legal matters; Andrei Ushatskiy, the VP of technology and IT; and Valery Viktorovich Shorzhin, the VP of procurement and administration. Don’t cross these guys. They run MBT with huge iron fists. They’re a tough breed. They wear ill-fitting suits, seldom smile and have bad haircuts. An analyst I know commented: “They’ve got eyes

like gray stones, and you don’t want to make them unhappy.” So one must not disagree with The Russian 5. They insist that MBT’s revenues can grow by 5.4 percent a year and that a continued increase in data usage plus its 108 million-person subscriber base will generate higher revenues and profits of 89 cents, versus 80 cents, for 2017.

Morningstar, Thomson Reuters, Zacks and Market Edge have “buy” recommendations for MBT. But I’m not comfortable buying most things Russian. The only Russian product I’d recommend is caviar, specifically Osetra and Sevruga Classic Grey caviar.

Never a Russian stock. Many Russians drink vodka the way Americans drink Coke or coffee. Therefore, I don’t trust the Russian government, the Russian economy, the Russian judicial system, the Russian financial system or the Russian businessman, including The Russian 5. MBT has the potential to do well; however, I think it will do well for The Russian 5, not for you. In my experience, Russian stocks don’t go up; they tend to disappear.

The company’s recent efforts include ridding its menu of ingredients with long, chemical-sounding Ron Shaich names people might find unappetizing. It’s also trying to reduce what Shaich refers to as “friction” to make it easier for customers to get their food, whether it’s through online ordering or in-store tablets that let people avoid standing in line.

Panera says the efforts are paying off, with sales up 2.3 percent at established locations for the latest quarter.

Shaich recently spoke with The Associated Press about his role as CEO, why he’s careful about his gluten

intake, and which product name he thinks is “stupid.”

His comments have been edited for length.

Q: You’ve equated eating at Panera with having self-respect. What do you mean by that?

A: Two weeks ago, I was in an airport and I walked up to a nameless fast-food chain. I ordered something.

I watched the people make the food without gloves on. I thought about where their hands had been. Then I walked over to sit in this environment, with this chair that was bolted to the floor. I felt so crummy about myself.

I was starving. The choice was them, and nothing. And I chose nothing. I couldn’t respect myself doing that.

Food is not simply nutritional cocaine that I’m injecting in my body.

It is about a relationship I have with myself, how I see myself, what I want from myself.

Q: What’s the challenge for big restaurant chains right now?

A: Today, it’s all about trust and

relevancy. And large corporate entities are more untrusted than trusted.

And they’ve earned that by the way they’ve done things. People have been oversold, overbranded, overhyped, overpromised. And they basically trust a small local operator more than they trust the big corporate entity.

Q: So how does a small company grow into a big company and stay relevant?

A: When companies start out, they figure out a better way to do something, and they’re very relevant.

Behind discovery is delivery. Delivery is about being more efficient, it’s about numbers, and it’s about extracting costs.

But that discovery muscle is pushed out by the delivery muscle.

Some day they wake up and realize they have no discovery people, and they realize they can’t compete.

I often think of myself as the discoverer-in-chief. The most powerful role I have is protecting the people that are dreaming about where this company can be in two to three to five to 10 years.

Q: What do you think about this trend of chains saying they’re removing artificial ingredients?

A: (McDonald’s had) a commercial on Chicken McNuggets. And they are touting the fact that they’re free of preservatives. I’m going OK, what are they really free of? And by the way, what sauce are these kids dipping it in? And what’s in the sauce?

I’m offended that these guys are turning this into marketing. They’re taking one element, and they’re broadening it. People really do want simpler, cleaner food, but this isn’t about marketing, it’s about delivering.

Q: Aren’t these big companies flexing their discovery muscles by trying to make these changes?

A: Are they flexing their discovery? They’re adjusting to a consumer marketplace. Everybody plays a role.

Our role was to lead the charge, and to open up the space. We’re very large.

When we do something, we change the economics of it and that allows other guys to come in behind us. And that’s fine with us – just do it all the way.

County Will Morrigans sport quality women’s rugby with family feel

“I grew up competing in horseback riding,” the 2010 Lincoln-Way East graduate said. “My mom owned a stable in Mokena.

“Then when I was a sophomore in high school, tryouts were announced for soccer, and I thought I would give it a try. I wound up playing all through

high school.”

She was ready to continue her education at DePaul University, and that was not going to change. Yet the urge for something fun, athletic and competitive in her life was not about to vanish.

Why not rugby? The local women’s team, the County Wlll Morrigans, always welcome reinforcements, and Ebeling says the decision to join was one of the best she ever has made.

“I started with the Morrigans a couple of months after I graduated from

high school,” said Ebeling, 24. “I went girls now.

“We won our conference the last to DePaul, but I kept playing with the Morrigans. I’ve been with them since three years and we’ve been to playoffs the last three years. So we are having the fall of 2010.

“I love the Morrigans. It’s like a big some success.”

Ebeling lives on the North Side of family, on and off the field.”

The No. 1 goal is to recruit players, but the Shamrocks welcome nonplayers to join the club as well.

Take Heather Nagel, for instance.

She met her husband, Brian, 11 years ago when he was playing for the Shamrocks. She got involved in most of the club’s social functions through the years, and two years ago at the annual meeting, she was nominated and elected secretary. Now she is the new president.

And she still loves watching the action. Nagel noted the Shamrocks play at Manhattan Irish Fest and Celtic Fest.

That gets them exposure locally. Central Park in Manhattan is the team’s home field, and besides having home games there, the Shamrocks practice there on Tuesday nights along with the Morrigans.

Our team helped them get started,” Misischia said. “That’s the way it often happens, that you get men’s and women’s teams in the same area.

“Tuesday nights we do a combined practice where we work on fundamentals. I go to practice, run around a bit, help out where I can. But I’m 41 and have had a couple of car accidents. I had to see a chiropractor and he said I was done playing for a while.”

Nagel said learning what the Shamrocks are all about is not difficult.

“The best way to learn about us is to come out and see us or visit us on Facebook or our website (www.shamrockrfc.com),” she said. “We do have a social aspect to our club, too. It is not necessary that you have to play rugby to join us, just come out and enjoy it.”

Mic Brophy is a founding member of the Shamrocks, a former player and current board member.

“In 1997, we started underground,” he said. “We were little known. Some of us wanted more action in our recreational lives, so we started a rugby team. Since then we have added several high school players and more from colleges. Now, high school kids are getting scholarships to college for rugby, which is great.

“I started in college in the ’90s. It’s been a pretty steady build since then.

Now we (Shamrocks) have to hand it over to the younger guys. They have stepped up nicely, but we are trying to get more people involved. It is hard and

it isn’t hard to recruit new players.”

The men’s side of rugby begins with Division I, the most competitive level, and includes Divisions II, III and IV. The Shamrocks play on the Division IV level.

“We are more of a social team because that’s what suits the people we have now,” Brophy said. “Kids are starting their work careers, and that’s pulling them away. We used to do two practice nights a week and a Saturday game, and now we’re down to one practice night.

“We definitely want this to be a good recruiting year. We’re doing basic instruction to advanced stuff. Any athletes who played rugby in high school or wrestled, come on out. Wrestling seems to be a perfect fit for rugby players.”

Taking the connection a step fur-

ther, Brophy added, “Rugby is like soccer and wrestling mixed together. It’s good cardio and leg work, but also has hitting and passing. We want to get new guys to join and get them up to speed until the game slows down for them. We have to have consistent recruiting and development.”

Misischia said the Shamrocks are not unlike any other athletic club.

“Any organization will have ups and downs,” he noted. “There are periods of high enrollment and then you lose some people. That only becomes an issue if you do not maintain in inflow of new people.

“We’re in Division IV. We took a step down. It’s more fun at the level we’re at. It’s a great level to be for older guys and new people who are not familiar with the sport and are not yet in shape to play it. Division IV is the social level.

We won’t be playing for high competitive stakes. D-I is the top level before professional.”

The Shamrocks are sponsored by the Irish American Society of County Will.

“They popped for metal goalposts at our field years ago, and that adds a lot,” Brophy said. “They’ve been a major sponsor all along. We owe a lot to them.”

Roster numbers for their sister rugby team, the County Will Morrigans, are up.

For the local men’s side, the Irish American Society of County Will Shamrocks, the time is right for a small recruiting boost.

“The team has had its ups and downs,” said Ray Misischia, vice president of the Shamrocks who began playing in 2010, has played on and off since and has been on the board the last three years. “Now we’re in a rebuilding process. We’re working on recruiting.”

Those who are currently or have been involved with the Shamrocks will emphasize how much fun, and how competitive, the game can be.

The Shamrocks’ website contains this statement: “The IASCW Shamrock Rugby Football Club is a club sport that can be played by people of all body types and athletic abilities, and therefore we’re looking for a variety of people to join the team. We’ve had players from all different athletic backgrounds; no matter where you’re at, we’ll help you learn the skills you need to have fun playing. No experience necessary.

“Joining the Shamrocks is a great chance to learn a new sport, play competitively, have a lot of fun, and meet some great people at the same time.

Come out and give it a shot.”

“I like the people and the sport,” Misischia said. “And being part of it on the field has helped me with the administrative end.”

Slammers ready to end playoff drought VIEWS Curt Herron The 2011 season was a special one for the Joliet Slammers.

Not only did the Slammers win the Frontier League’s East Division title with a 56-40 record, but then they swept Lake Erie in three games before defeating River City, 3-1, to claim the title.

The next four years weren’t so memorable for Joliet, as its average finish was 17 games under .500 and 20 games out of first place.

But it was clear early on that this season was going to be different for manager Jeff Isom’s squad. The Slammers have held a lead in the East Division for much of the season and now are on the verge of earning their first playoff appearance in five years.

After winning three of four at Washington over the weekend, the Slammers (49-41) own a 41/2-game lead over the second-place Wild Things (44-45), who also have six games left.

Washington will only play 95 games, so Joliet’s magic number is now two.

The Slammers play three games at Lake Erie beginning today while Washington will do the same thing at Windy City. This weekend, Joliet hosts Traverse City for three games, while the Wild Things will play three at Lake Erie.

Assuming the Slammers can wrap things up, they’ll draw the second seed in the playoffs and open with Evansville (51-38), which is trying to hold off a late charge by River City (48-42). Southern Illinois (59-31) won

the West Division and earned the top seed.

In the opening round of the playoffs, the lower seed will host the first two games with the higher seed hosting the last three, if necessary. In the championship series, the higher seed will be at home for games one, two and five, if that is needed.

All year, Joliet has relied on one of the league’s most-productive offenses to put it in a position to be successful.

Conversely, the Slammers have also dealt with a pitching staff that has ranked among the worst in the Frontier League this season.

As a result, one of the factors that has proved to be beneficial for Isom’s team has been their ability to grab the early lead in games. Through their first 90 contests, they took the initial lead two-thirds of the times, for a total of 60 games. A shaky bullpen helps to account for their .544 overall winning percentage.

Going into the final week of the regular season, Joliet ranked first in the league in runs (498), hits (847) and RBIs (452) and were second in home runs (83) and average (.277). Meanwhile, they’ve also allowed the most earned runs (418) and walks (395), and own the worst ERA (4.84) in the Frontier League.

The Slammers overcame the early-season departure of Boo Vazquez (.324, 11 home runs, 39 RBI) with nine different players hitting at .250 clips or better. That’s allowed Isom many options throughout his lineup, and the veteran skipper has juggled things well so as to create some challenging matchups for opposing managers.

They’re hitting 21 points better and they’ve seen a 60 percent increase in home runs, a 24 percent boost in RBIs and a 15 percent improvement in runs.

Leading the way has been Carter Bell, who’s tied for third in the league in RBIs (73), is seventh in average (.315) and tied for eighth in home runs (13). A year ago, he split time at Washington and the Slammers and only hit .225 with eight homers and 25 RBIs. Jake Gronsky has boosted his average to .297 and ranks sixth in the league in RBIs (67) to go along with

eight homers, Alfredo Rodriguez is third on the team in average (.294) and Marc Flores is hitting .283 and ranks eighth in RBIs (61) and also has hit 12 home runs.

The good news for the Slammers’ pitching department has been steady improvement among most of its starters. Liam O’Sullivan leads the Frontier League with 10 victories and is tied for first in strikeouts with 104. He’s won three-straight since suffering his lone loss on Aug. 7 to Southern Illinois and his 3.36 ERA also ranks among the top 10 in the league.

Chris Rice has been a nice surprise since making the move to the starting rotation from the bullpen and currently is 4-1 with a 3.68 ERA. Prior to his first start against Schaumburg on July 4, his ERA was 6.88 as a reliever.

Sean Townsley has lowered his ERA from 4.88 in late July to 3.72 after getting his third win in four decision to improve to 7-7. Shane Bryant has won three in a row and carries a 5-2 record and seen his ERA get lowered to 4.12.

The midseason addition of Isom’s assistant at Lake Erie and that team’s former manager, Chris Mongiardo, has clearly made a significant difference not only in the improved pitching but also the every day operations of the squad.

If the Slammers get their way, they’ll wrap up the division title in Lake Erie and head home only needing to worry about playoff preparations. This weekend will be a great opportunity for local fans to congratulate the squad on what has been a memorable season so far.

“I had one injury in March of 2015,” she said. “I needed surgery. I tore a ligament in my foot and fractured two bones.

I had to take six months off. It happened in a game. I heard three pops and knew it was pretty bad.”

Women’s teams can compete in Division I, the most competitive level, or Division II, which is the level on which the Morrigans play.

“Basically, I call the Morrigans serious fun,” Harris John said. “It’s up to the girls where they want to take it. It’s an amateur club run by the players, for the players. I’m not sure the girls want to be on the D-I side. It gets a little serious on the D-I side.”

Still, Harris John wants the Morrigans to be at their best in what he considers the ultimate team sport.

“Our first game on Labor Day weekend is against the Chicago Women, which is D-I, and quite honestly, I would love for us to give them a really serious game,” he said. “Some of our previous players have moved up to the D-I side with other teams. I always encourage players to do that if that’s what they want. If they try it and don’t like it, they always can come back to the Morrigans.”

As he said, the Morrigans are about serious fun.

“I love rugby. To me, it’s the consummate team sport,” he said. “You have 15 players on each team, and you truly are only as strong as your weakest link.”

Harris John also has been helping out with the girls high school team that is composed of players from the four Plainfield schools.

“Last year they won I believe it was their fifth straight state title,” he said.

“That’s quite a record. There are getting to be more and more high school teams now, even from Chicago.

“There always has been good representation on the male side in rugby, now the female side is catching up. You see it in our team. Our team has an age range from about 18 to the middle 30s, and we have great set of leaders and some tremendous athletes.”

Players such as Ebeling fit that description.

“The success the Morrigans have had is a credit to the girls themselves,” Harris John said. “The last three years they won the D-II league in the Chicagoland area. They were undefeated in the league two years ago, and they drew in one match last year.

“My goal is to get them into the playoffs, win a game and go from there. Eventually, I would like to see them play for the D-II national championship. In 2014, we played the Wisconsin Women in the first round of the playoffs. They beat us and went on to win the national title.”

Having players get into the physical condition necessary to compete at their highest level is part of the job David Harris John performs as head coach of the Morrigans. He is in his fourth year at the helm and has an extensive background in the demanding sport.

“I started playing when I was 11 years old growing up in Wales in the U.K.,” he said. “That was 57 years ago, so you can do the math (regarding his age).

“I played until I was older than 40.

Then I coached the men’s side (Shamrocks) in Manhattan for nine or 10 years.

I knew the Morrigans because they were just getting started with us.”

Harris John coached the Northwestern women for a couple of years, “but they were finding it hard to field a team,” he said. “Once the Morrigans approached me about coaching them, I said yes. They never had a coach before.

They coached themselves. I really have enjoyed the last four years.”

Harris John cited the growth in the Morrigans’ numbers that Ebeling had referenced.

“Rugby is a growing sport in the U.S.,” he said. “They are thinking about bringing pro teams here to play some games.”

It was a positive for the sport in this country that rugby was played in the recent Olympics at Rio de Janeiro.

“Our rugby is 15 on a side; the Olympics was seven,” Harris John said. “But it’s the same in that it’s all about fitness and fundamentals.”

Chris Prosinski hopes to show consistency in preseason finale

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com LAKE FOREST – Chris Prosinski is familiar with the preseason finale, the “last audition,” as he calls it. Players such as Prosinski who are known for their special teams often get the most run in the final preseason game, hoping to make one last good impression.

“A lot of guys, starters and veterans, won’t play as much, so young guys and guys fighting for a spot, you know you’re going to get a lot of reps on special teams and defense, so you have to be prepared mentally and physically,” he said after Monday’s practice. “Just have to go out there and put on good film.”

The sixth-year safety missed time last summer with a hamstring injury and the Eagles released him after the preseason. He signed with the Bears in Week 3 and even started five games at safety. Prosinski has not only stayed healthy this preseason, but he’s also benefited from being with a special teams group that is mostly intact from last year’s third phase.

“I came in Week 3 so you’re thrown in the mix and you don’t have a lot of time to practice and play with other guys,” he said. “Special teams is a lot of communication, playing off other guys. You do need to have a familiarity with the guys you’re lined up next to. It’s huge throughout these OTAs and training camp to be able to do that.

“Special teams-wise, I think we’ve

played solid, but I feel like we can play so much better. If we just utilize it, and play up to our abilities, I think we can be one of the top units in the league.”

Prosinski should get a lot of reps Thursday in Cleveland, at safety and on special teams. He’s not necessarily a lock to make the roster, but his experience in the kicking game is valued, and he said he wants to show the coaches his consistency and take advantage of any opportunity to make a play.

And if he’s looking to relax before cuts are made, Prosinski can do some yoga, which has been part of his training regiment for four to five years.

The yoga has helped Prosinski physically this offseason, too.

“It’s a really good workout,” he said. “A lot of people think you’re stretching, which it is, but it’s also a lot of core and balance and flexibility without that constant grind on the joints. I do think that’s also helped me this offseason. I did a lot more than I had previously.”

The Associated Press DETROIT – Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Detroit Tigers to a 4-3 victory over the White Sox on Monday night.

Justin Upton also went deep for the Tigers, who pulled within a game of Baltimore for the American League’s second wild card.

Detroit trailed 3-2 after a solo homer in the seventh by the Sox’s Tyler Saladino, but Saltalamacchia’s towering drive to right-center off Nate Jones (53) put the Tigers ahead.

Justin Wilson (4-4) got the win in relief, and Francisco Rodriguez pitched a perfect ninth for his 37th save in 40 chances.

Saladino drove in all three Sox runs.

James Shields allowed two runs and six hits in six innings, ending an awful August on a decent note, but the Sox couldn’t hold a one-run lead for him.

Shields was 0-4 with a 13.95 ERA in five August starts coming into Mon-

day’s game, but the Tigers didn’t do much against him. Miguel Cabrera hit a sacrifice fly in the third, but Saladino’s two-run single put the Sox ahead the following inning.

Upton tied it in the sixth with a solo home run. Saladino led off the seventh with his eighth homer of the season.

The Sox used three relievers to get through the seventh, and Jones came on in the eighth. He walked Martinez, and Saltalamacchia went deep one out later.

Detroit starter Matt Boyd allowed two runs and seven hits in four-plus innings.

Trainer’s room: White Sox: CF Adam Eaton was in the lineup after leaving Sunday’s game because of a bruised forearm. He went 0 for 4 with a walk.

Fitbit makes exercise even more of a game

NEW YORK – Fitbit wants to help you exercise more by making you think you’re hiking famous trails instead of strolling around your neighborhood.

The new motivational feature, called Adventures, will be available to all Fitbit users through a free app update Monday.

The feature tracks the distance you’ve walked or run and maps it against actual trails, starting with three at Yosemite National Park in California. The Fitbit app will unlock badge-like images of trail landmarks – say, a scenic waterfall at mile 5 – as you progress. Other rewards include “fun facts” and health tips along the way. Fitbit will add other destinations, including the ability to “run” the course of the New York City Marathon.

One of Fitbit’s most popular features has been its ability to let friends and family compare steps they’ve taken throughout the day. Fitbit says those who participate in such challenges tend to take 30 percent more steps. The company says Adventures is designed to offer similar challenges even if people haven’t assembled real-life groups.

The feature might help some users stick with step tracking and other fitness measures after the novelty wears off. People who keep using their Fitbits are more likely to tell their friends about them, and to upgrade to more advanced models themselves, analysts say.

Fitbit, the market leader in wearable devices, is also updating two older devices, the 2013 Flex and the 2014 Charge, mostly to bring them in line with what newer devices and rivals offer. Besides tracking steps and sleep, the Flex 2 and the Charge 2 will remind people to take moving breaks throughout the day. That’s coming to the Fitbit Blaze, too, through a software update.

The Charge 2 will have a heart-rate monitor, a feature previously limited to the HR edition of the Charge. It will guide users to take deep-breathing breaks, something the Apple Watch will also soon do. One new feature promises a quick snapshot of cardiovascular fitness based on a metric known as VO2 max. While this typically requires running on a treadmill with an oxygen mask, Fitbit estimates it using running speed and heart rate instead. There’s been no independent testing yet on the method’s accuracy,

Meanwhile, the Flex 2 will be the first Fitbit with sufficient water resis-

tance for use during swimming; Fitbit rivals such as Garmin already offer that on some devices.

The Charge 2 is expected to ship in September for $150, while the Flex 2 will come in October for $100.

HEALTH BRIEFS received in advance of patient appointJoliet Oncology-Hematology Associates selected for initiative ments so that patients do not need to JOLIET – The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has selected Joliet Oncology-Hematology Associates Ltd. as one of nearly 200 physician group practices and 17 health insurance companies to participate in a care delivery model that supports and encourages higher quality, and more coordinated cancer care.

The Medicare arm of the Oncology Care Model includes more than 3,200 oncologists and will cover about 155,000 Medicare beneficiaries nationwide.

These services may include: • Coordinating appointments with providers within and outside the oncology practice to ensure timely delivery of diagnostic and treatment services.

• Providing 24/7 access to care when needed.

• Arranging for diagnostic scans and follow up with other members of the medical team, such as surgeons, radiation oncologists and other specialists who support the beneficiary through their cancer treatment.

• Making sure that data from scans, blood test results and other tests are

• Providing access to additional patient resources, such as emotional support groups, pain management services and clinical trials.

General cardiologist joins Morris Hospital Cardiovascular Specialists MORRIS – Board-certified cardiologist Dr. G. Steinar Gudmundsson has joined Morris Hospital Cardiovascular Specialists.

Strength and power training counteract loss of muscle mass

Dear Dr. K: I’m in my 60s. Despite exercising regularly, I have been losing muscle as I get older. Why does this happen, and is there anything I can do about it?

Dear Reader: As the years pass, muscle mass generally shrinks and strength declines. It happens to all of us as we age – even Arnold Schwarzenegger. The key to slowing this process is strength and power training.

There basically are two reasons our muscle mass starts to shrink. The first is “sarcopenia” – age-related muscle loss. This usually begins about age 35 and occurs at a rate of 1 percent to 2 percent a year for the typical person. After age 60, it can accelerate to 3 percent a year. On average, adults who don’t do regular strength training can expect to lose 4 to 6 pounds of muscle a decade.

The second reason our muscle mass starts to shrink is, as we grow older, more of us use our muscles less. We don’t spend as much time at sports as when we were younger. For most of us, our work doesn’t require that we use our muscles much. Strength and power training can prevent, and even reverse, some of this loss.

The nerve-signaling system that recruits muscle fibers for tasks also deteriorates with age and lack of use. Again, power training and strength training may help restore these neural pathways and reverse this effect.

So exactly what is strength and power training? Strength training refers to exercises that build muscle by harnessing resistance – an opposing force that muscles must strain against. Putting more than the usual amount of load on your muscles makes them stronger. Power training exercises increase power, which is the product of both strength and speed.

strength and power training into your exercise regimen. Strong muscles have an effect on more than just the way people look or move. Strong muscles pluck oxygen and nutrients from the blood much more efficiently than weak ones. Basically, they don’t have to work as hard, so the heart doesn’t have to work as hard to supply oxygen and nutrients to the muscles. That puts less strain on the heart.

Strong muscles also are better at sopping up sugar in the blood, keeping blood levels of sugar in the healthy range. In addition, strong muscles also help the body stay sensitive to insulin. This helps prevent or control Type 2 diabetes.

Strong muscles enhance weight control, too. That’s because the more muscle you have, the higher your resting metabolic rate.

People with stronger muscles are less likely to fall. And when they do take a tumble, they are less likely to sustain a serious injury.

Finally, it’s now becoming clear regular strength and power training – such as aerobic exercise – protects against heart disease and strokes. These two conditions are important causes of premature death.

Our muscles naturally start to weaken early in adult life. But don’t curse that fact – reverse it, instead. You can do a lot.

In all bridge contracts, as long as declarer does not lose more tricks than he can afford, he will get something -- at the least, a plus score. But success for declarer often depends on the careful handling of losers. In this deal, for example, South was in four spades. West led a low diamond. East won with his king and shifted to the club two. What should declarer have done now?

The auction might have followed several paths. West’s negative double brought hearts into the picture. Then North, with only six losers (three spades, one heart, one diamond and one club), a diamond ruffing value, and a club suit to provide winners, took a shot at four spades.

Even the bartender knew that East had shifted to a singleton club.

The original declarer won trick two in his hand and played two rounds of spades, trying to avoid East’s gaining a club ruff. Here, though, East won with his spade queen and switched to a low heart. Then South had to lose two spades, one heart and one diamond.

Stopping the club ruff was a mirage. Declarer should have won trick two on the board and taken a spade finesse. Here it would have won, and South, after cashing the spade ace, could have claimed an overtrick.

Now suppose that the spade finesse lost. Yes, East would have gained a club ruff and shifted to a heart, but declarer could have won with dummy’s ace, drawn the missing trump, and run the clubs for his contract.
