Red Covered Bridge – Princeton In Colonial America, travelers crossed most rivers by means of fords or ferries.

Small streams and creeks were spanned by stone slabs or timber plants of limited length while larger water crossings required beam spans supported on timber piles.

By the end of the 18th century, the expanding economic opportunities after the Revolutionary War increased the demand for new roads and bridges. With the abundance of timber throughout the colonies, and the limited knowledge of engineering theory, American builders turned their attention to devising strong, efficient and economic long-span wooden structures.

While early bridges were built for utility, later bridges were built with appearance in mind. Covered bridges are usually identified and classified by their truss construction. The truss design determines how long a span it can have and how complex it is to build.

Most historians agree that the earliest documented covered bridge was the Permanent Bridge constructed over the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia by Timothy Palmer in 1805. Most covered bridges, however, were constructed between 1825 to 1875. During this period, covered bridges helped achieve the safe, efficient, and economical overland transportation that was a key aspect of the nation’s growth and economic development. Bridges were adapted to the needs of many types of transportation corridors, including turnpikes, canals and railroads.

Covered bridges were constructed to serve two main purposes: to protect the wooden floors from natural elements and to help placate horses that were prone to spooking by the sound and sight of the rushing water below.

The real reason, however, was that bridges were covered to protect the mighty wooden trusses that held the bridge together. If the trusses were left to the sun, wind, and rain, the life expectancy was only about 15 years. When they were covered, their life span increased tenfold.

OLD POSTCARD IMAGES SOUGHT FOR PUBLICATION David Belden is a history teacher at Minooka Community High School and currently is publishing local postcard books with Arcadia Publishing in his Local History classes. By the 1870s, the timber truss was eclipsed by comparable spans of iron, which, in turn, were replaced by concrete and steel bridges in the 1920s and ’30s.

Today, covered bridges remain as iconic artifacts of a more simple time. Many of those bridges still are in use on public roads today, reaffirming that these structures are more than just quaint relics.

In 1999, Congress authorized the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to help states identify and rehabilitate historic covered bridges. Of the more than 10,000 covered bridges that once existed throughout the country, nearly 700 covered bridges

Locally, the Red Covered Bridge in Princeton is a landmark that is a delight for photographers, nature lovers and tourists. Incorporating the popular Howe truss design model, the bridge was constructed in 1863. It provided 19th century travelers taking the Peoria-Galena Trail north of town with a permanent solution in their struggles to cross over Big Bureau Creek.

Spanning nearly 150 feet over the water below, the Red Cover Bridge is one of just six of its kind in the state that once boasted 132 covered bridges. Still open to one-lane traffic today, the bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

Hundreds come out to pay tribute to Mokena soldier Aaron Toppen

Shaw Media correspondent MOKENA – The last time Pam Toppen of Mokena heard from her son, Aaron – a private first class deployed in Afghanistan – he was excited about being chosen for a special mission. He promised to text her details later.

The text read: “Mom, I’m going on a special mission, I tell you more when I get back, I’m with five of the best,” Pam shared.

But the text never came. That day in June 2014, Pfc. Aaron Toppen and four other U.S. Army soldiers were killed by friendly fire after they called in air reinforcements during a Taliban attack. Aaron, a graduate of Lincoln-Way East High School, was only 19 at the time, and was engaged to be married to Jackie Rozek.

More than 200 motorcycle riders gathered Sunday morning at the Pipefitters Training Center Local 597 in Mokena for the second annual Pfc. Aaron Toppen Memorial Motorcycle Run. Opening ceremonies began at 9:45 a.m. with event coordinator Troy Walker on stage with Aaron’s mother, sisters Amanda Gralewski and Amy Toppen, niece Taylor Gralewski, and fiancée Jackie Rozek.

“The reason we are here today is for these beautiful people here, the Aaron Toppen family. We are here to remember Aaron and to keep his memory alive and honor his spirit,” Walker said.

Just after 10 a.m., it was “kickstands up,” and the riders rolled out of the parking lot in pairs onto back roads for the 50-mile trip. The riders were escorted by the Will County Sheriffs Department as they rode past St. John’s Cemetery in Mokena, where members of the Lincoln-Way Community High School Junior ROTC stood at Aaron’s grave, and then down to Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood.

“I want you to ride loud, obnoxiously loud, but we have two places we must be quiet. St. John’s Cemetery is hallowed ground because Aaron is there. The second is Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. We will roll through in a quiet rumble to let warriors know we are here to honor them,” Walker said.

“The actual ride was a somber event – not many words were spoken. We rode in front and when we passed the cemetery, I turned around and looked back at the bikes behind us; it’s touching how many people came to support my brother,” Amanda said.

“We veterans support each other,” Canaryville Veterans Riders Association member Tom Russell said. “We need to keep awareness to show that these kids who paid the ultimate sacrifice aren’t forgotten, and support the families.”

Pam said it rained last year during the ride, and with weather reports calling for rain, she was sure that it would be the same situation this year, but that would remind her of her son.

Makers fair celebrates those who create, innovate

Shaw Media correspondent MOKENA – Logan Brandon of Plainfield has an interest in electronics, and with his grandfather Fred Bussean of Mokena by his side, takes robotics classes at Joliet Junior College to further his knowledge.

It’s that love of electronics and robotics that led his grandfather to bring Logan, his mother Jennifer Brandon and wife Nancy Bussean on Saturday to the third annual Chicago Southland Mini Maker Faire held in Mokena.

“I figured he would be interested in this event because he likes robotics.

He’s interested in taking courses in robotics, but most require an adult, so I’m his designated driver,” Fred said.

More than 800 spectators walked through the doors of the Mokena Pipefitters Local 597 Training Center to a room full of homemade technology-based innovation and hands-on opportunities.

This mini faire stems from the global celebration of makers started by Make: Magazine in 2006.

This event was a collaboration of Jay Margalus, Jim Richmond and Tim Ozinga. Margalus, who works as a game design professor at DePaul University, and is president of makerspace SpaceLab in Mokena, wanted to bring this makers faire event to the south suburbs where he saw a lack of electronic opportunity.

“I wanted my family to live in a learning community, where we work together to forward education with handson learning, which is constructionism.

This type of learning doesn’t exist in our schools here yet,” Margalus said.

Margalus said this event focuses on the importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields, or STEM, and a makerspace offers a place where all walks of life can meet to create do-it-yourself technology projects.

Margalus said there were 30 exhibitors and 50 exhibits on Saturday, most affiliated with a makerspace in their area, and colleges or universities.

Each exhibitor had a hands-on learning project for toddlers and senior citizens alike. Video games, dance games and computer games were popular among the younger population. Stations with computer-run robots, drones, solder stations and telescopes held the attention of the tweens.

“It’s neat that all of this stuff was homemade-made by the people here, and it’s even more fun that we get to feel it and try things out,” said Nate Dion, 9, of Mokena.

“This builds the boys’ brain power and it’s hands-on, which is the best way to learn,” Lucas’ mother Terra Comerford said.

Robin Moseley of SouthWorks MakerLab Network in Park Forest said these events are important because our world has shown a great migration toward technology in every facet.

“People can see where our future is going in a lot of ways, and how technology is growing fast,” Moseley said.

“Drones are going to be used to deliver packages by Amazon and within 10 years I believe robots will be used in the home to help around the house, and be connected to the Internet to ask questions.”

Lincoln-Way resident raises concern about student services equity

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Some Lincoln-Way District 210 residents have raised concerns about the equity of student support staff between the remaining three high schools after North was closed.

District spokeswoman Taryn Atwell wrote in an email that the district has no concerns regarding the Pupil Personnel Services staff as their contractual loads have not changed.

Concerns about the apparent disparity in student services between the remaining Lincoln-Way schools – East, Central and West – were raised by Frankfort resident Cindy Grobmeier at the Aug. 18 board meeting.

She pointed out what she said were inadequate number of nurses and counselors at the schools, saying the staff at East – where her daughter attends – were overburdened. East has the highest student enrollment among the schools.

Projected student enrollment this school year for East, Central and West is 2,940; 2,140 and 1,911 respectively.

Atwell wrote each school has one nurse. Central and West has one social worker each and East has 1.5, meaning someone is at that campus for half a day, she wrote. East’s website lists two social workers. It’s the same for the schools’ psychologists.

The number of counselors is 9.5 at East, 6.5 at Central and 6 at West.

Because of residents’ questions on student capacity of the schools, the

district put out a graphic stating the functional capacity of East, Central and West is 68, 87 and 84 percent.

District officials also said teachers and personnel are distributed proportionally to the number of students attending each school. However, Grobmeier was concerned that each building has one school nurse, one psychologist, one social worker. She said East should have four school nurses to meet the basic needs of students, citing research from medical associations on school nurse-student ratios.

“I can’t tell you what fury will rain down on this board and administration if anything happens to my daughter because she can’t receive adequate medical intervention on time should she experience an asthma attack,” she said.

Superintendent Scott Tingley said in response on Aug.18 the number of counselors and deans have been based upon enrollment. He said there were more at East than at Central and West.

He also said there were a proportionate share of psychological and social work services between the schools, although he didn’t have a number at the time.

JOLIET – Eisenhower Academy was named the top elementary school in Will County by Chicago magazine, according to a district news release.

Eisenhower Academy is one of four magnet programs in Joliet Public Schools District 86. Currently 263 students in grades first through fifth attend the school.

The Chicago magazine ranking was based on test scores, spending per pupil, student attendance, as well as teacher and student data from the 5Essentials surveys.

District 86 is accepting students within district boundaries at Eisenhower. Admission is based on students who demonstrate average or above average academic skills and exhibit positive behavior.

New signs near Channahon schools aim to cut back on confusion If you’re driving along Ford Road in front of Three Rivers School or Sioux Drive in front of Channahon Junior High, take note of the new flashing, school speed zone signs.

The signs will help to take the guesswork out of when it’s necessary to slow down in the school zone; and make it easier to give you a ticket if you don’t obey. I’ve always found the old school signs confusing. Some post the 20 mph speed limit “when children are present,” others say “on school days when children are present.”

Does that mean I should go 20 (instead of the posted 40 mph) when it’s a typical school day and kids are off for conferences? There might be cars in the parking lot and I don’t always know when kids are off.

What if the kids are way up by the school, for recess?

Channahon Police Officer Ed Bischoff found the signs confusing as well. So last year he did some research into a way to make school zones safer for our kids and the wording clearer to motorists.

The process became an undertaking for Bischoff; he had to work with his department, Channahon School District 17 officials, Channahon Public Works and Will County because Ford is a county road.

Channahon District 17 Chief School Business Official Mike Schroeder said the school board was excited about the signs. What’s great about them, he said, is the white LED lights are much more noticeable than yellow lights that some school signs have. And they were able to get all four LED, solar signs – two at each school – for the cost of one of the other types. Plus the LEDs don’t need electrical hookups.

The lights will only flash during specific time periods, so we don’t become accustomed to and ignore them, Schroeder said.

The reason just two schools received the signs is they have kids that walk, Bischoff said; the other two District 17 schools bus all the students.

The school district paid for the cost of the signs, the village’s Public Works Department will maintain them and the police department will take care of adjusting for any time changes.

The signs will flash between 7:15 and 8:15 a.m. and again between 2:15

They won’t be turned off when the school schedule changes for just one day, Labor Day for instance. But when school is out for winter or spring break, the police department will shut them off (this has to be done manually at each sign). So we still need to use some common sense.

I’m personally excited by the new signs. Mostly for the safety of school kids, but also as a wordsmith, ambiguous sentences make me a little crazy.

Already Bischoff has pulled over

two drivers on Ford Road who said they didn’t see the flashing signs.

Motorists need to take note and be aware that there’s no longer any room for misunderstanding of when to obey the school zone speed limit.

“If you see the sign flashing, keep to 20 [mph],” Bischoff said. “Now it’s pretty simple.”

The transition from middle to high school is much more than just moving up from grade 8 to 9. Major changes in curriculum, social groups, activities and even appearance occur and can add stress as an older child becomes a young adult.

That’s why parents and teachers need to be sensitive to more than just the greater difficulty of high school subjects, said Robert Barwa, instructor in the University of St. Francis College of Education.

“The student is going to be preoccupied with things that are not academic” like who they’ll fit in with and how, and whether their appearance will be acceptable to their new peers. They’ll also notice how physical changes take place as puberty fades, said Barwa, a former principal at East Aurora and Burlington High Schools.

Parents need to keep communications open to discuss subjects such as acceptable risks. At the same time, students may push back, feeling more independent and becoming less talkative, he said.

Parents and teachers have to “be real” because students of this age “can see through phoniness in a big hurry,” Barwa said.

USF teacher education programs focus on relating to the student as a whole social, psychological being while guiding them from “knowing thingsto depth of understanding, thinking and problem solving,” he said.

A variety of training techniques are applied for teacher candidates. For example, they work in both middle and high school classrooms in local schools during their academic career to get actual classroom experience in diverse settings. Also, faculty use role-playing, as well as their extensive classroom and administrative experience to model best practices.

“Teachers are learning that you have to educate the whole student. It’s a lot more than just what they know,” he said.

JOLIET – Life was all about family for fun-loving Gwen Dickerson-Johnson – her biological family and her church family.

A lifelong member of St. Paul Missionary Baptist church in Joliet, Gwen was a greeter at the door, and a member of the anniversary, beautification and kitchen committees, said her sister, Darlene Bradley of Joliet.

“Gwen was like the Road Runner.

She went all the time,” Darlene said.

“You could always find her at the church doing something. Whether she was cleaning the church or planting flowers, she was busy always.”

On the homefront, Gwen shared her good cooking – ribs, deviled eggs and sweet potatoes – at family get-togethers. She also helped organize family reunions, down to arranging for coach buses for out-of-town reunions, Darlene said.

“She helped me move into a new house two days before she died,” Darlene said. “But when God gets ready to take the best flower, that’s his business.”

Of everything in Gwen’s life, it was her walk with God and how good and gracious he is, that was most precious to Gwen, Darlene said.

“He’s just the strength in our lives,” Darlene said.

Gwen was 59 when she died suddenly of a heart attack July 24.

Growing up in a musical family of 11 children, Gwen and Darlene were

close, Darlene said. The entire family was known as the Dickerson Singers, so Gwen learned the value of service at an early age, as the singers performed events, including church-related ones.

“If the choir didn’t go, we had to go,” Darlene said with a laugh.

As adults, both Gwen and Darlene drove school buses for Joliet Township High School District 204, from which Gwen graduated in 1975. Around 1990, Gwen began working in environmental services at the hospital now known as Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, Darlene said. Around 1998, Gwen injured her shoulder on the job and went on disability, she added.

But that only gave Gwen more time for church ministry and more with her two daughters Dara Johnson and Aleashea Johnson, as well as her three grandchildren. Dara’s children are Darius Johnson, 13, and Diamond Johnson, 12. Aleashea is the mother of Aaliyah Johnson, 6.

Dara said her mother freely shared her home-cooked meals and homebaked goods, and took her grandchildren everywhere with her, whether she was running errands or vacationing at out-of-state resorts.

“She was a happy lady and loving person,” Dara said. “If she had it and you needed it, she would freely give it.”

Dara said Gwen could be a tad overprotective with her loved ones but only because she wanted the best for them and she set the example she wished them to follow.

“She loved the Lord,” Dara said, “and it showed in everything she did.”

McDermed appointed to Illinois Sentencing Policy Advisory Council SHAW MEDIA SPRINGFIELD – State Rep. Margo McDermed, R-Mokena, has been chosen by House Republican Leader Jim Durkin to sit on the Illinois Sentencing Policy Advisory Council.

McDermed replaced former state Rep. John Anthony of Joliet, who resigned from the House of Representatives in June after being appointed to a job in the Illinois Margo Department of Correc- McDermed tions.

The SPAC advises the governor on legislation and compiles data on incarceration rates, their financial cost, and how to improve the state’s criminal justice system through reform, according to a news release from Durkin.

Last year’s report from the council found that in Illinois, the recidivism rate is 48 percent, meaning the within three years of release, 48 percent end

up back in prison, at a high cost to the state, those reincarcerated, and their victims.

“I am pleased that the governor’s administration has made criminal justice reform, including sentencing, a major initiative of his tenure,” McDermed said in the news release. “Now Illinois can really get to work on reforms that can rehabilitate both this state and its citizens. We must have fair sentencing that will still deter future criminals and policies in place to get offenders back on their feet as productive members of society.”

The council is a 19-member nonpartisan group consisting of state and local criminal justice system stakeholders including legislators, retired judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, corrections and court officials, law enforcement, victims’ rights advocates and academics.

McDermed currently sits on the Juvenile Justice and System-Involved Committee in the House.

ROMEOVILLE – A major expansion of Romeoville’s parks and recreation offers is set to start in 2017 that will add 38.5 acres of park space by 2018.

Romeoville last year was awarded a $400,000 grant from the state’s Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development program for Phase 1 development of Discovery Park, but the state only recently released the money because of the state budget impasse.

The new 31-acre park site will be located on the southwest side of Romeoville near Weber and Airport roads, according to a news release from the village. The park will be constructed in multiple phases with a total estimated budget of $6 million. The initial phase will begin construction in 2017 with a total budget of up to $3 million; besides the OSLAD grant, the remainder of the cost will be funded through the village with available cash on hand.

Construction slated for next year will include soccer, football and la-

crosse fields, as well as three halfcourt basketball courts, two sand volleyball courts, a baggo playing area, an interpretive trail system and the road extension of Highpoint Drive, according to the news release.

“The development of this site has been a top priority for the village. It is very important that we provide facilities to the residents in which they can participate in a variety of sports,” Mayor John Noak said in the news release. “This facility will create needed space for sports that continue to grow in the community such as soccer and flag football.”

A future phase of the project will include a playground, shelter, maintenance building, concessions/restroom facility.

The village also is working to develop approximately 7.5 acres of open space adjacent to Volunteer Park and the Joliet Junior College’s North Campus. That space should be usable by 2018, according to the news release.

It is anticipated that the open space will be usable for variety of activities, including practice fields, by 2018.

Chicago brothers charged in shooting of Wade’s cousin THE ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Two brothers who were on parole for prior criminal activity have been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of the cousin of NBA star Dwyane Wade, Chicago police announced Sunday.

Darwin Sorrells Jr., 26, and Derren Sorrells, 22, also were charged with attempted murder in Friday’s shooting.

They appeared in court Sunday and were ordered held without bail.

Nykea Aldridge, a 32-year-old mother of four, was pushing her baby in a stroller near a school where she’d planned to register her children when she was shot in the head and arm. She wasn’t the intended target, Cmdr. Brendan Deenihan said at a news conference Sunday, but rather a driver who had just dropped off passengers in the neighborhood.

There is video of the incident, Deenihan said, but no weapon was recovered and police don’t know where the weapon is.

Chicago has been in the throes of a major uptick in gun violence this year, largely centered in a few South and West Side neighborhoods, after years of seeing deDarwin clines. This July alone, Sorrells Jr. there were 65 homicides – the most for that month since 2006.

She was born March 20, 1920, to the late Anna (nee Finc) and Anton Slejko in Rockdale,

where she resided most all of her life.

In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her brothers, Anton (Mary) Slejko, Loddy (Bess) Slejko, and Leon Slejko; and sisters, Ann (John) Bozich and Ernie (John) Giacometti.

Survived by a sister-in-law, Dorothy Slejko; and her nieces and nephews, Barbara Slejko Donisch, Cenka (Michael) Kaminski, Stephen Bozich, Russell Giacometti and George (Laura) Slejko. Many great-nieces, great-nephews as well as a grand-niece and grand-nephew also

Josephine “Jo” was fondly known as Miss Slejko to the many students she, “had the privilege of teaching,” in her 43-year career.

Josephine felt that each day on Earth was a gift. She served as an inspiration and positive role model to her students, family and friends.

AMATRICE, Italy – Italian authorities are vowing to investigate whether negligence or fraud in adhering to building codes played a role in the high death toll in last week’s earthquake in Italy.

They also called for efforts to ensure organized crime doesn’t infiltrate lucrative construction contracts to eventually rebuild much of the picturesque towns leveled in the disaster.

Meanwhile, rescue workers pressed on with the task of recovering bodies from the rubble, with hopes of finding any more survivors virtually vanished more than four full days after the powerful quake.

Over the past two days, they found six more bodies in the rubble of Hotel Roma in Amatrice, the medieval hill town in mountainous central Italy that bore the brunt of destruction and loss of life in the powerful quake. They recovered three and by late Sunday were still working to retrieve others that were hard to reach.

It wasn’t clear whether those six were included in the overall 290 death toll given by authorities. The Civil Protection agency, which combines the figures it receives from different provinces affected by the quake, said the number is lower than the previous toll of 291 dead because of a correction in the numbers from the province of Rieti, where most of the victims died.

The quake that struck before dawn Wednesday also injured almost 400 people as it flat-

tened three medieval towns near the rugged Apennines. Prosecutor Giuseppe Saieva, based in the nearby provincial capital of Rieti, said the high human death toll “cannot only be considered the work of fate.”

“The fault lines tragically did their work and this is called destiny, but if the buildings had been built like in Japan they would not have collapsed,” Saieva said in comments carried by Italian media.

Investigations are focusing on a number of structures, including an elementary school in Amatrice that crumbled despite being renovated in 2012 to resist earthquakes at a cost of $785,000. With schoolchildren’s summer vacations in their final weeks, the school wasn’t yet in use. Many were shocked that it didn’t withstand the 6.2 magnitude quake.

After an entire first-grade class and a teacher were killed in a 2002 quake in the southern town of San Giuliano di Puglia, Italian officials had pledged citizens that the safety of schools, hospitals and other critical public buildings would be guaranteed.

Questions also surround a bell tower in Accumoli that collapsed, killing a family of four sleeping in a neighboring house, including a baby of 8 months and a 7-year-old boy. That bell tower also had been recently restored with special funds allocated after Italy’s last major earthquake, which struck nearby L’Aquila in 2009.

Italy’s national anti-Mafia prosecutor, Franco Roberti, vowed to work to prevent organized crime from infiltrating public works projects that eventually will be begun to rebuild the earthquake zone.

FARC sets permanent cease-fire under Colombia peace deal

HAVANA – The commander of Colombia’s biggest rebel movement said Sunday its fighters will permanently cease hostilities with the government beginning with the first minute of Monday, as a result of their peace accord ending one of the world’s longest-running conflicts.

Rodrigo Londono, leader of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, made the announcement in Havana, where the two sides negotiated for four years before announcing the

peace deal Wednesday.

“Never again will parents be burying their sons and daughters killed in the war,” said Londono, who also is known as Timochenko. “All rivalries and grudges will remain in the past.”

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos announced on Friday that his military would cease attacks on the FARC beginning Monday.

Colombia is expected to hold a national referendum Oct. 2 to give voters the chance to approve the deal for ending a half-century of political violence that has claimed more than 220,000 lives and driven more than 5 million

people from their homes Top FARC commanders are planning to gather one final time in mid-September to ratify the accord.

FARC guerrillas are supposed to turn over their weapons within six months after the deal is formally signed. In return, the FARC’s still unnamed future political movement will be given a minimum 10 congressional seats – five in the lower house, five in the Senate – for two legislative periods.

In addition, 16 lower house seats will be created for grassroots activists in rural areas traditionally neglected

by the state and in which existing political parties will be banned from running candidates. Critics of the peace process contend that will further boost the rebels’ post-conflict political power.

After 2026, both arrangements would end and the former rebels would have to demonstrate their political strength at the ballot box.

Not all hostilities are ending under the deal with the FARC. The much-smaller National Liberation Army remains active in Colombia, although it is pursuing its own peace deal with the government.

Turkey-backed rebels expel Kurdish forces from Syrian towns

BEIRUT – Rebels backed by Turkey made major gains Sunday in northern Syria, expelling Kurdish-led forces from towns and villages as part of a determined campaign by Ankara to push the militants east of the Euphrates River.

At least 35 civilians were killed, according to activists. The dramatic escalation of Turkey’s involvement in the Syrian civil war last week aimed to help the Syrian rebels drive the Islamic State group out of the border town of Jarablus. But it also is aimed at U.S.-allied Kurdish forces that have gained control in recent months of most of the territory along the Turkey-Syria border.

The fighting pits Turkey, a NATO ally, against a U.S.-backed proxy that is the most effective ground force battling IS militants in Syria in the 5-year-old civil war. It leaves Washington in the tough spot of having to choose between its two of its allied forces, and is likely to divert resources from the fight against IS. A Turkish soldier was killed by a Kurdish rocket attack late Saturday, the first such fatality in Turkey’s ground offensive dubbed Euphrates Shield that began Aug. 24.

Speaking at a rally in the border town of Gaziantep, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his military is committed to fighting terrorism in Syria and Iraq.

Turkey, he said, also is determined to “uproot” the Syrian Kurdish group, calling it a terrorist organization. But he didn’t specify a goal for the fight against the Kurdish forces.

Turkey has troops stationed in Bashiqa in northern Iraq, and it was not clear if his reference to Jarablus means he intends to base his troops there.

Erdogan then turned his focus to the main Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party, known as the PYD. “We are as determined about the PYD, the separatist terror organization’s Syrian wing,” he said. Ankara views the PYD and the militia affiliated with it, which forms the backbone of the U.S.-backed Syria Democratic Forces, or SDF, as an extension of the Kurdish insurgency that is raging in southeastern Turkey.

“We will continue until we uproot this terror organization,” Erdogan told the rally.

A spokesman for a Syrian rebel group said the Turkish-backed offensive will continue south of Jarablus to clear IS and Kurdish forces from northeastern Aleppo. Turkish leaders have vowed to drive both IS and the Kurdish People’s Protection Units, or YPG, away from the border.

Turkey’s military said Sunday its warplanes killed 25 Kurdish “terrorists” and destroyed five buildings used by the fighters in response to attacks on advancing Turkish-backed rebels in the Jarablus area.

Various factions of the Turkey-backed Syrian rebels said they had seized several villages and towns from Kurdish-led forces south of Jarablus, including Amarneh, where fighting was fiercest in recent days.

The Kurdish-led forces “must pull back to the east of the Euphrates. We

will fight all terrorist groups, including [the Kurdish-led fighters] ... in all of northeast Aleppo,” said Capt. Abdel-Salam Abdel-Razzak, a spokesman for the Nour el-Din el-Zinki group.

Turkish-backed fighters will move south of Jarablus, toward Manbij and beyond, he said.

Earlier this month, the Kurdish-led SDF crossed the Euphrates and drove IS militants out of Manbij, a key supply hub south of Jarablus, after a 10-week campaign. Both Turkey and the United States have ordered the YPG militia to withdraw to the east bank of the river.

YPG leaders say they have, but their units advise the Syrian Democratic Forces, and it is not clear if any remain west of the Euphrates.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the bombing killed at least 20 civilians and four Kurdish-led fighters in Beir Koussa, a village about nine miles south of Jarablus, and left another 15 dead in a village to the west.

SDF spokesman Shervan Darwish said the airstrikes and shelling began overnight and continued Sunday along the front line, killing many civilians in Beir Koussa and nearby areas. He said the bombing also targeted the village of Amarneh. He said 50 Turkish tanks were taking part.

The Kurdish Democratic Union Party condemned the attack on the village.

It also condemned what it said was international silence regarding “Turkish occupation” of Syria.

The Syrian state news agency SANA reported that 20 civilians were killed and 50 wounded by Turkish artillery and airstrikes, calling it “encroachment” on Syrian sovereignty under the pretext of fighting IS. Turkey is a leading backer of the rebels fighting to overthrow Syrian President Bashar Assad, but both Ankara and Damascus share concerns over Kurdish ambitions for autonomy.

Regardless of early results, local teams have reason for optimism Providence Catholic finished off the opening weekend of high school football in the Joliet area with a rare treat.

The HERALD-NEWS WASHINGTON, Penn. – With just six games remaining in their regular season schedule, the Joliet Slammers have put themselves in a good position to earn their first postseason appearance since winning the Frontier League championship in 2011.

The Slammers moved to a 41/2game lead for the top spot in the East Division over Washington after capturing a 4-2 victory Sunday in a

seven-inning game that was delayed and then awarded to them over four hours after the game began.

Beginning Tuesday, Joliet (49-41) plays three games at Lake Erie before closing with three home contests against Traverse City over the weekend. Washington (44-45) also has six games left with three at Windy City followed by three at Lake Erie.

Joliet scored a run in the third to move in front for good and then added two more scores in fourth. After the Wild Things got a run back in

the fifth, both squads got runs in the sixth.

In the third, Phil Bates walked, Casey Fletcher doubled and Charlie White drove in a run on an infield out. An inning later, Jake Gronsky led off with a single, and Carter Bell followed with his 13th home run to give the Slammers all the runs they would need. The two-run blast gives Bell 73 RBIs this season, which tied him for third place in the standings.

Neither West nor JCA played particularly well. Both made too many mistakes. When then happens and you are facing quality opponents, victories usually do not result.

But we always hear about good teams making their biggest improvements between Week 1 and Week 2. If that’s the case, Providence, West and JCA, having learned from their Week 1 experiences, all should be better next week. It will be interesting to see if any or all of them can get to five wins and thus be playoff teams.

Elsewhere in the area on opening

weekend, how about Minooka taking five-time defending Southwest Prairie champion Oswego to the wire before falling, 7-6. The Indians waited out a lightning delay, then came back out and attempted a potential game-winning two-point conversion, only to misfire.

An interesting followup to that game is the Plainfield North at Oswego battle scheduled Friday night.

North is among the favorites in the SPC, and Friday’s game should give us an indication whether Minooka also is right there with the top teams in the league.

Minooka this Friday night will visit Joliet Central, which played tough in its SPC debut against Plainfield East, falling, 6-0, with the only points on Blake Coughlin’s pick-six. The Steel-

men’s defense is ready to rock. If their offense can find consistency, they will be in business as far as ending that losing streak somewhere along the way.

It has reached 55 games.

Elsewhere in the SPC, Plainfield South got off to a good start under first-year coach Bill Bicker with a 35-9 win over Romeoville. The Cougars visit Joliet West on Saturday afternoon in a matchup that is all sorts of interesting.

The debut of Plainfield Central coach Jon Pereiro ended in a 40-7 loss to Plainfield North. However, the Wildcats, whose losing streak is at 30 games, hung in for a while against an excellent opponent and, like Joliet Central, are ready to compete against the SPC schedule.

Outside the SPC, some of the highlights on opening weekend were Wilmington’s drubbing of St. Joseph-Ogden, Lockport’s win at Downers Grove North and Lincoln-Way Central’s late, come-from-behind victory at Lake Central, Indiana. It is early, but indications are we will be seeing the Porters and Knights back in the playoffs this year, which, after all, is where they belong.

The bottom line was a 34-3 Providence loss and a night where its offense produced 39 net yards. And yet, after trailing, 28-0, at halftime, the Celtics played much better in the second half. They were learning and improving as the game progressed.

“You have to take the positives out of this game,” Providence coach Mark Coglianese told my cohort, Herald-News correspondent Drake Skleba, after the game. “We played better in the second half.

“We just don’t have that kind of speed to simulate in practice. We won’t see speed like that in the Catholic Blue. The physical play will be there, but not that kind of speed. That total package is what was so tough tonight. We didn’t expect them to be as physical. We thought we could wear them down, but that didn’t happen.

They are a very good team.”

Two Celtics on the offensive side of the ball who were eager to show what they can do instead found no room to breathe, let alone produce results.

Tailback Richie Warfield netted 15 yards in 13 carries, with none longer than 3 yards, and caught four passes for 7 yards. It is safe to say Warfield’s postgame stats line never again will come anything near 17 touches for 22 yards.

Then there’s quarterback Jared Drake, who finished 8 of 24 for 40 yards and was on his back play after play, getting rid of the ball a split second before being slammed down by East St Louis’ relentless pass rush.

“Richie Warfield had no room tonight,” Coglianese said. “We could have had Marshall Faulk back there, and it would not have made any difference. The same holds for Jared Drake.

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Carlos Rodon pitched into the seventh inning, Justin Morneau had a two-run single and Melky Cabrera drove in a run and scored twice to lead the White Sox to a 4-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday.

Jose Abreu also drove in a run to help the Sox, who took three of four in the series and have won six of eight.

Robinson Cano hit a solo homer, his 30th, and Kyle Seager had three hits for the Mariners.

Rodon (5-8) allowed the run and five hits in six-plus innings before giving way to the bullpen.

Chris Beck and Dan Jennings worked out a jam in the seventh, Nate Jones pitched a 1-2-3 eighth and David Robertson got the last three outs for his 33rd save in 39 chances.

Sox center fielder Adam Eaton left the game due to a bruised forearm in the fifth – an inning after being hit by a pitch. X-rays were negative and he is

Seattle starter Taijuan Walker (4-9) allowed four runs on four hits in 71/3 innings. He also hit three batters.

Walker was perfect through three innings, but then started the fourth by hitting Eaton. One out later, Cabrera doubled to put runners on second and third. Jose Abreu was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Morneau followed with a single to left for a 2-0 lead.

Seattle got a run back in the sixth on Cano’s solo shot.

Rodon was lifted in the seventh after giving up hits to Seager and Franklin Gutierrez to start the inning. Catcher Mike Zunino then tried to advance the runners with a sacrifice bunt against Beck, but third baseman Todd Frazier fielded the bunt and fired to second base for the force out.

That play proved crucial when Jennings induced pinch-hitter Adam Lind to ground into an inning-ending double play. The Sox added a two runs in the eighth on an RBI triple by Cabrera and a sacrifice fly by Abreu.

LOS ANGELES – Brock Stewart and four relievers combined on a four-hitter and Andrew Toles scored on a fielder’s choice in the eighth inning, leading the Los Angeles Dodgers over Jon Lester and the Cubs, 1-0, on Sunday.

Stewart struck out eight over five innings of two-hit ball, and then Jesse Chavez, Grant Dayton, Joe Blanton and Kenley Jansen closed up shop.

Blanton (5-2) got the win and Jansen got three outs for his 39th save.

With one out in the eighth, pinch-hitter Toles was hit by a pitch, and then Trevor Cahill (3-4) threw away Howie Kendrick’s short roller, allowing Toles to reach third.

After an intentional walk and a strikeout, Adrian Gonzalez hit a soft grounder toward third, and Javier Baez double-clutched before throwing to late-arriving second baseman Ben Zobrist. Umpires ruled Corey Seager beat Zobrist and the ball to the bag, allowing Toles to score, and a review upheld the call.

Lester struck out six and pitched three-hit ball over six innings, and the Cubs also four-hit the Dodgers.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – As Ryan Harlost stepped to the mound on Sunday, he took it all in.

Chants of “U-S-A, U-S-A!” droned over his left shoulder as he dipped it to deliver a warm-up pitch. South Korean arms and flags waved furiously to his right. Little kids who asked for his autograph earlier in the week used makeshift sleds to slide down the hill toward most of the 22,000-plus fans who packed Lamade Stadium.

The Endwell, New York, pitcher admitted it made him uneasy. He sure didn’t show it.

Harlost led New York to the Little League World Series title, striking out eight and limiting South Korea to five hits in six innings in a 2-1 victory. He scored the deciding run on a passed ball in the fourth inning.

Endwell snapped a five-year championship drought for U.S. teams on Little League’s biggest stage and gave New York its first title since 1964. Huntington Beach, California, won in 2011 and Mid Island from Staten Island won New York’s last World Series championship.

Sunday’s race fits into that description. Of course, it also helped Elliott’s bid to make the Chase on points, if need be.

Elliott said one of the issues that has kept him from competing for victories more often is accidents.

“I’ve been wrecking a lot lately, certainly more than I would like to,” he said. “Wrecking depends on the situation and what happens, but I’ve made some dumb mistakes, too.

The thing is, I try not to make them again.”

Again, he accepts responsibility.

When he gets to Chicagoland, he will have his share of fans regardless of whether he is in the Chase.

“We had a good year in 2014 at Chicago in the Nationwide race,” he said.

“Otherwise, we haven’t had a lot of luck there, but it’s always exciting to race there. I’m looking forward to it.”

The Associated Press BROOKLYN, Mich. – Kyle Larson raced to his first Sprint Cup victory Sunday, taking the lead on a restart with nine laps remaining and holding off Chase Elliott at Michigan International Speedway in a duel between two of NASCAR’s up-and-coming standouts.

Elliott had a comfortable lead before a tire problem on Michael Annett’s car brought out the yellow flag. Larson had the better restart and went on to win by 1.48 seconds. Brad Keselowski finished third.

Larson’s victory in his No. 42 Chevrolet snapped a 99-race losing streak for Chip Ganassi Racing dating to Jamie McMurray’s victory at Talladega in 2013.

Larson secured a spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup with two races left in the regular season. Elliott remains winless but is in solid shape to make the Chase field on points if need be.

It was the 99th career start for the 24-year-old Larson, who had 14 top-five finishes before Sunday but hadn’t won at the Cup level. The 20-year-old Elliott is winless in 29 starts, but this was an impressive showing for him after eight consecutive races outside the top 10.

Elliott finished second at Michigan in June, as well, losing to Joey Logano.

Elliott led by 2.86 seconds with 28 laps to go Sunday, and it looked like Larson’s chance to catch him had been derailed when he lost ground passing a lapped car. The caution gave him another shot, however, and he took advantage.

There were only four cautions in the 200-lap, 400-mile race. Larson led a racehigh 41 laps. Logano, the pole winner, finished 10th.

Hendrick Motorsports is now winless in the past 19 races after Elliott fell short, but there were some positive signs for the team. At the midway point, Hendrick cars were 1-2, with Jimmie Johnson leading Elliott at the front. Kasey Kahne was in fifth at that point.

Breaking away from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for a few minutes last week, 20-year-old Chase Elliott discussed his rookie season as a full-time driver on the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit.

“We’ve had our ups and downs,” he said of his Hendrick Motorsports team. “We have had good cars and good runs and then I’ve made some mistakes. I’m trying to do a better job for the guys on this team.”

Elliott was in Chicago on Thursday to promote the Sept. 18 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400 at Chicagoland Speedway, the first race in the Chase for the Sprint Cup. His next stop was Michigan International Speedway.

After Sunday’s second-place finish to Kyle Larson in the Pure Michigan 400, Elliott is 14th in the Chase point standings. In a previous race at Michigan in June, he finished second to Joey Logano.

All race winners who are in the top 30 in points qualify, and if any of the 16 spots remain, the point leaders among non-winners fill out the

rolet at the beginning of this season.

He was voted the Nationwide/ Xfinity Series Most Popular Driver in 2014 and 2015. Part of his appeal comes from his willingness to take personal responsibility. When he makes a mistake, he says so.

It appeared his first victory, and the coveted Chase berth, would be his Sunday. He was leading comfortably before a late caution forced a restart.

Larson had a better restart, and Elliott settled for second. So no automatic Chase berth yet.

Doubling down on the sentiments he expressed beforehand, Elliott said this to reporters after Sunday’s race: “That’s a couple races in a row in just a few short months here at this place we had a really good car, had an opportunity. That’s one thing I try really hard to do is make the most of opportunities when they’re presented. Obviously, I didn’t do a very good job of that here both trips.”

The standings, tight as they are, are not foremost in his mind.

“I really don’t keep up on how we’re doing in the standings,” Elliott said last week. “We just want to keep getting better. We’re trying to do our

Rahal makes last-lap pass to win at Texas

FORT WORTH, Texas – Graham Rahal lifted his arm over his head just as he reached the finish line at Texas Motor Speedway, then glanced to his right to make sure he had won the race.

After a last-lap pass of James Hinchcliffe, Rahal did indeed hold on to win Saturday night in the closest finish ever for an IndyCar race at the high-banked, 11/2-mile oval.

“When I got to the stripe, I started to raise my arm and then I was like make sure,” said Rahal, who glanced to see the No. 2 on the LED panel of Hinchcliffe’s car signifying his place in the race. “I thought I was clear. I knew it was going to be very close.”

The only time Rahal led the race – competed over a 21/2-month span – was when he sliced to the bottom of the track coming off the backstretch on that final lap. He won by eight-thousandths (0.008) of a second, crossing the line only inches and side-by-side with Hinchcliffe, with Tony Kanaan right behind them.

“When we cleared Tony and it was just me and Graham coming down to the checkered, I thought the momentum is on the outside. I feel like I’ve kind

of seen it here 10 times before in races in years past, and I thought we were still going to be able to do it,” Hinchcliffe said. “But man, he rolled through the center of 3 and 4 with a whole lot of speed. He cleared me – I hadn’t been next to a car all night that cleared me that quickly.”

Hinchcliffe had led the Firestone 600 for 76 days. He was leading when the race was initially red-flagged June 12 because of rain after only 71 of 248 laps, and dominated after it resumed until three late restarts.

Rahal’s fourth career win came at the high-banked, 11/2-mile-oval where four years ago he appeared headed for victory before brushing the wall on the last lap and finishing second to Justin Wilson.

Hinchcliffe led 188 laps overall in the race, including 157 of the 177 laps run Saturday night.

“My night was great until about eight minutes to go,” he said after what was still his best finish of the season.

Series points leader Simon Pagenaud was fourth, and extended his lead from 20 to 28 points over Team Penske teammate Will Power with two races left.

Power, who won four of the previous six races with runner-up finishes in the other two, was eighth at Texas.

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Patrick Reed had a crystal trophy, a clear shot at the richest payoff in golf and a spot on the Ryder Cup team.

All he could offer Rickie Fowler was best wishes to join him at Hazeltine.

Reed picked up two victories Sunday at The Barclays. He rallied from an early two-shot deficit to win the FedEx Cup playoff opener and assure himself a clear shot at the $10 million bonus.

And he secured a spot on the U.S. team at Hazeltine that will try to win back the Ryder Cup. “Everyone’s been talking about the Ryder Cup, been talking about, ‘Oh, you’re in the eighth spot and you’re on the bubble’ and all that,” Reed said after his one-shot victory. “If you go and win, it takes care of everything else. ... It takes care of everything.”

The way Fowler finished only leads to two weeks of uncertainty. Fowler needed only to finish alone in third place, which was the farthest from his mind as he battled Reed at Bethpage Black.

“I wasn’t trying to get a decent fin-

ish,” Fowler said. “I was trying to win.”

Two shots behind with four holes to play – and two shots clear of third place – Fowler missed a 4-foot par putt on the 15th hole and made double bogey on the next hole. His late meltdown sent him to a 74, a tie for seventh and kept him off the Ryder Cup team.

Reed built a big enough lead that a few sloppy mistakes over the final hour didn’t matter. He made bogey on the final hole for a 1-under 70 and a one-shot victory over Sean O’Hair and Emiliano Grillo.

Fowler still could have made the Ryder Cup team with a birdie on the 18th hole. He missed another fairway and took bogey. It was the fourth time Fowler has failed to convert a 54-hole lead on the PGA Tour, though he remained optimistic.

“He just told me, ‘Hey, I’m going to go get my work done. I’ll see you in Minnesota,’” Reed said.

Sunday was the final day to earn eight automatic spots on the U.S. team.

Fowler’s late collapse allowed Zach Johnson to claim the eighth and final spot. Davis Love III still has four captain’s picks over the next three weeks.

Talk to your teenager about sex or somebody else will Dear Dr. K: I’m the parent of a teenage girl. I know it’s time to talk to her about sex, and I’d appreciate any advice.

Dear Reader: Many parents feel anxious or uncomfortable talking with their children about sex. But remember that if you don’t, somebody else will.

Teens get lots of information (and misinformation) about sex from their friends, the internet, television, magazines, books and movies. It’s up to you to make your child understand what it really means to have sex, both physically and emotionally.

Don’t worry that you will be “putting ideas” into your teen’s head. Many parents I’ve talked to are concerned having the conversation will encourage their kids to try it. In fact, teens who talk openly with their parents usually wait longer to have sex – and they are more likely to use birth control when they do.

Whether to have sex outside of marriage is a personal question, and I’m not going to weigh in on that. But it is important you state your own views regarding at what point in a relationship sex is appropriate. At the same time, don’t insist your child share your views. My colleagues who specialize in adolescent medicine tell me teens often are naturally rebellious and resist attempts to tell them what to do.

It is very important to teach your child how to say no firmly. Coach your daughter to say “no” while looking her partner in the face. Again, it’s one thing to talk to your daughter about how to say “no,”

I wouldn’t describe all of the sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in detail.

That can come across as scare-mongering and cause some kids to tune out. But I would list all of the STIs: Most kids don’t realize how many there are.

By the same token, I wouldn’t stress that some of them, if unrecognized and untreated, can be fatal. I would emphasize some of them can make it hard or impossible for a woman to bear children.

I would describe the facts about birth control. The points I’d be sure to make are no birth control is 100 percent effective, and many types of birth control will not protect against STIs. The only way to be entirely safe is not to have sex.

Finally, I’d explain sexually active females need to have a pelvic exam every year. Offer to take her to a gynecologist or pediatrician if and when she decides to have sex.

Most important, be there for your teenager. Listen to her questions and try to answer every one. Let her know that whatever choices she makes, she will always have your love and support.

Clearly, America is in a state Jeanne of turmoil. I am Phillips horrified and ashamed of the senseless death occurring daily.

I deal with anxiety, particularly regarding fear of death. As a result, the only thing I’ve found I can do to cope with current events is to scan headlines, and ask my understanding husband for a synopsis of events that doesn’t include major triggers.

However, I feel serious guilt I may not be fully educating myself on recent events. Am I wrong to prioritize my mental well-being over the gravity of our country’s current situation? – Serious Guilt Dear Serious Guilt: Wrong? Absolutely not.

According to The Journal of the American Medical Association, 13 percent of Americans now use antidepressants to combat depression and anxiety. Our news media feed so many salacious details into our homes in the interest of high ratings it’s a miracle the majority of Americans aren’t in need of them.

If you are getting the news you need to know, do not feel guilty for using your husband as a filter. You are only protecting yourself, and that’s not wrong. It’s healthy.

Dear Abby: My sister-in-law “Dani” and my brother have been married almost three years. I recently discovered Dani has created a fake social media page. She posted some nude photos on it and acts like she’s single.

I suspect she is getting paid to do live nude video chatting, too.

Abby, I’m shocked over this. I’m sure my brother would explode with rage and disappointment if he knew. They have two small daughters, which leaves me to wonder if she has considered their embarrassment if they ever find out. She’s a good person, so I don’t know why she would do this. What should happen?

After South opened one heart, and West made a full-blooded four-diamond pre-emptive overcall, North was worried that his side was being talked out of a slam. But he remembered that when fixed, stay fixed.

Declarer seemed to have 10 easy tricks: two spades, six hearts, one diamond and one club. In addition, there were chances for extra winners in the black suits. However, South could not resist the temptation to try to win the first trick. But when East ruffed the diamond ace and shifted to the club jack, declarer could not recover. He tried the club finesse, but West won, cashed the diamond queen, and continued with the diamond jack. A moment later, when the spade finesse lost, South was down one.

Since West’s overcall had announced an eight-card suit, declarer should have played low from the board at trick one ... and at trick two.

East can ruff away the diamond ace at trick three, but South overruffs, draws trumps, and runs the spade jack to take three spades, six hearts and one club.
