JOLIET – VenuWorks plans to take the management reins Sept. 1 at the Rialto Square Theatre – and begin looking for shows even sooner – after being selected Wednesday as the firm to run the theater.

The Rialto board voted 6-0 to hire VenuWorks to manage the theater.

The one possible dissenting vote – Mary Beth Gannon – was taken from the Rialto in an ambulance just before the meeting started while repeatedly coughing violently for several minutes. A friend said Gannon was having an asthma attack.

The vote Wednesday does not immediately give VenuWorks the job.

The Rialto still must negotiate a contract with the Iowa-based venue management company. But both sides expressed confidence they would get that done so VenuWorks could begin work Sept. 1.

“We’ve developed a good relationship with them,” said VenuWorks Chief Financial Officer John Siehl. “We want to make this work.”

Siehl said the company’s booking office will start looking for acts at the Rialto immediately.

“Probably tomorrow we’ll start making calls and letting people know that this is part of our roster,” he said.

Adding Onesti to the team might not have helped Pinnacle.

“I felt it tainted the spirit of the proposal process,” Rialto board member Vicki Murphy said at the meeting.

Rialto attorney David Silverman said he looked into the legality of adding Onesti to the Pinnacle proposal, and it was not a violation of the process. He said the proposal process was “more fluent” than a contract bidding.

The recent events, which included a City Council meeting Tuesday where Mayor Bob O’Dekirk labeled both the VenuWorks and Pinnacle proposals as “bad deals,” disturbed one Rialto board member.

“What’s happened in the last 48 hours is an embarrassment,” said Michael Murray, who joined the Rialto board in June as an appointee of the governor. “It’s an embarrassment to the theater and its history. It’s an embarrassment to the city.”

People speaking before the Rialto board vote were divided on the Onesti issue, but most of the comments were focused on Onesti.

Wayne Barnett of Joliet called Onesti the “Rialto savior” and urged the board to wait 30 days before making a decision.

Carol Mulvihill, a Joliet resident who volunteers at the Rialto, said Onesti’s Arcada Theatre “is successful because he’s a hands-on person,” but she did not believe he could devote the same attention to the Joliet theater.

Rotary to give $25K to Rialto for marquee

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Rotary Club of Joliet plans to donate $25,000 from proceeds of its annual raffle to the Rialto Square Theatre for a future marquee.

The Joliet Rotary Raffle Committee announced to members Wednesday that the club picked the Rialto as the recipient for the annual donation of raffle funds. It was one of 12 grant applicants.

Since 1984, Joliet Rotary has awarded more than $800,000 in proceeds from its annual raffle to either start a needed community project or assist an existing program, according to the club. Other recipients have included the YMCA, Easter Seals, Daybreak Center, MorningStar

sports facilities, conference centers and outdoor venues.

The Rialto board rejected requests from a few people who asked that the selection of a manager be slowed down for a month. The call for delay came amid a push to give the management contract to Ron Onesti, who runs the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles.

Onesti Entertainment was one of five companies reviewed by a Rialto committee that recommended VenuWorks and Pinnacle Venue Services as the two finalists for the job.

Gannon last week helped initiate an online petition drive urging Onesti for the job, and Onesti appeared at a City Council meeting Monday with supporters suggesting the city intervene in the selection process.

Pinnacle in making its final presentation Monday, announced that Onesti had become part of its team and would be involved in the Rialto if the firm got the job.

The Onesti movement took another turn Wednesday when Onesti sent a letter addressed to city officials and the Rialto board calling all five management proposals “worthless” because the firms did not know enough about the theater.

Onesti also urged a delay.

Pinnacle Managing Partner Doug Higgons, when asked before the Wednesday meeting, said he was not aware of the Onesti letter.

“There were 12 worthy applicants considered by the club. and after much consideration the votes resulted in the support of the Rialto project,” Rotary Club President Dan Malinowski said, who noted that this year’s raffle is set to kick off next week.

“We are very happy to support another community organization that supports the people of Joliet.”

The Rialto is attempting to raise an estimated $191,000 to update the existing marquee and vertical sign, as well as install a partially completed sign on the Scott Street side of the theater.

Rialto Interim General Manager Jack Ericksen said the Rotary donation would increase the total amount raised for the marquee so far to about $100,000.

Earlier this month Rialto officials said the Rialto’s foundation has secured a $28,000 federal cost-sharing grant from the Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program and received a $20,000 donation from First Midwest Bank toward the marquee work.

“This will help us get on the way to the repairs and the relighting and getting the marquee looking like it should,” Ericksen said.

The project follows the abandonment of a previous marquee in mid-construction amid community opposition to the design. The donor took back a $350,000 contribution that would have paid for the marquee, and the Rialto board later agreed to update the existing signs and use what it could from the one that was partially built.

Parents join children for first day

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A whole family came to Carl Sandburg Elementary School to see their kindergarten student begin the first day of school.

Marquis and Jillyan Wilson walked with their daughter, Zoë Wilson, to Sandburg on a warm, bright Wednesday morning. Joining them were Zoë’s grandparents, Sandra and Willard Wilson, along with Zoë’s godmother, Kendra Spiva.

Marquis said he was excited but nervous about his daughter’s first day, but that she was very excited, as it was a day she had been looking forward to for three months.

“She’s going to make friends, I already know it,” he said.

“She’s a social butterfly,” Jillyan

said.

Zoë was one of hundreds of students at Sandburg, part of Joliet District 86, who began their first day of school Wednesday. Students at 10 other districts across Will County – in Plainfield, New Lenox, Frankfort, Shorewood and Wilmington – also began their first day Wednesday.

Zoë stood in one of the several lines students were organized into outside the school before they headed to their classrooms to meet their new teachers.

Many parents were there to watch their children, with some taking photos on their phones.

Zoë’s grandmother said the family walked Zoë to school.

“I just hope she keeps the enthusiasm for school,” her grandfather said.

TINLEY PARK – Three local police departments were recognized Wednesday as some of the best in the state for their efforts to increase traffic safety.

The Elwood Police Department took first place for the municipal agency with less than 10 officers in the Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge, and Shorewood police tied with Chatham for the best agency with less than 25.

The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office police also won in its division and received the Judges Award for the best overall application.

“I’d agree that traffic enforcement probably has the biggest effect on people who live in or pass through Grundy County. We don’t have a lot of violent

crime, but we’ve got two interstates and two highways used by almost everyone,” Sheriff Kevin Callahan said.

Shorewood Chief Aaron Klima said traffic enforcement will always be a priority.

“You can drive as well as you possibly can but some wayward motorist runs into you,” he said.

Elwood Chief Fred Hayes said fatal and serious crashes have a domino effect of cost to those involved, their families, their finances and the time police have to spend investigating them.

According to the National Transportation Highway Safety Authority, there were about 1,000 fatal crashes in Illinois in 2015 – an 8 percent increase from 2014. Distracted driving, intoxicated driving and speeding are the

leading crash factors and remain the focus of enforcement efforts.

Besides an award plaque, Elwood and Grundy sheriff’s police received a portable alcohol-measuring device officers can use on a roadside traffic stop.

“These can provide an officer with probable cause to bring a driver who is suspected of being intoxicated back to the station to take a breath test,” Hayes said.

Breath tests are not challenged in court as much as field sobriety tests.

Shorewood police received a laser radar that can be used to measure a vehicle’s speed.

“It targets an individual car more precisely than the radar that sends out a spectrum where someone will argue it’s another vehicle that was speeding,” Klima said.

Romeoville to open new firehouse within 2 weeks

mmallory@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – Out with the old, in with the new.

The Romeoville Fire Department will move in by September to its new Fire Station 1. The station replaces a decades-old building that was demolished last year.

Not only was the old firehouse deteriorating structurally and cosmetically, it didn’t meet modern fire department needs.

The old building was demolished at a cost of $103,400. Then, the new building was designed for $66,212 and built for $3 million. Mayor John Noak said the work was paid for in cash reserves and the station will open ahead of schedule.

“It’s an important reinvestment in the community,” Noak said Wednesday.

“It’s nice to do this with cash that we saved.”

The old firehouse was built for a volunteer fire department, with a couple additions over the years. Fire Chief Kent Adams said it was not meant to house the staff overnight. At the time of its construction, no one worked 24-hour shifts. But the village has grown since then. In 1991, it opened Station 2, and in 2008, it opened Station 3. Meanwhile, Fire Station 1 was constantly altered in attempts to meet the needs of the department.

The Romeoville Fire Department’s new firehouse will be operational by the beginning of September. It replaces a decades-old building that was designed for a volunteer department.

“We held off on it as long as we could,” Noak said. “We probably gave it more life than we should’ve.”

Adams said although the square footage is slightly less in the new firehouse, it will be a much better use of space.

The old firehouse’s layout was not ideal.

Printers were down long hallways and what was once a mechanical area was turned into office space.

“It was a really poor use of manpower just for simple tasks,” Adams said.

The department will have a designated space for breathing apparatuses and tanks now. They were not required when the old building was constructed.

Bedding, kitchen and office space has long been insufficient, Adams said.

Noak noted that when the old firehouse was constructed, there were few-

er women first responders. The new firehouse will reflect the change.

“It will be adequate for both genders,” he said.

The village discussed building a firehouse on a new site, Noak said, but ultimately decided it was best to connect the present with past history by building on the same piece of land at 18 Montrose Drive.

Plainfield trustees oppose proposed feasibility studies

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield village trustees were not supportive last week of two proposed studies, one aimed at predicting the village’s future housing demand and the other regarding uses for a 58-acre village-owned plot of land.

Lance Dorn, a project manager with Chicago-based SB Friedman Development Advisors, outlined the proposals in a Committee of the Whole meeting Aug. 8.

First, Dorn told trustees a study by the firm would analyze viability and demand for potential uses of the village-owned property east of Van Dyke Road and south of 143rd Street.

The property, with a railway that runs diagonally at its north and east ends, was bought in 2006 for $7.5 million.

The village was then approached by Metra, which wanted to use about 10 acres of the land for a train station as part of the now-dormant Suburban Transit Access Route project, which would have

connected Joliet to O’Hare International Airport with stops in-between.

None of Plainfield’s six trustees were in favor of going forward with the study, estimated to cost more than $30,000.

Trustees said it’s likely a few years too soon to pay for a study when interest from developers has been nonexistent since the recession.

However, on Wednesday, Mayor Michael Collins said the village has been approached recently by “a couple viable companies.”

“One is waiting for funding and another is ready to go,” Collins said. “We’ll see how it goes as plans develop, but we’re negotiating.”

Collins echoed comments made by other trustees in the meeting, saying a proposed extension of 143rd Street would bring people to the area, and that’s part of why the property has not yet been developed.

The village has the support of state legislators for the extension, Collins said, but federal funding sources have not yet gotten behind it, although Plain-

field has a few more opportunities to apply for grants.

Also at last week’s meeting, Dorn highlighted a study that would help form recommendations on potential housing needs to coincide with the village’s strategic plan.

Each trustee, except for Ed O’Rourke, said the study wasn’t needed. The overarching theme was that the study would tell the village something it already knows – that trustees don’t want anymore apartments.

O’Rourke, however, said the study could forecast future housing needs now that the recession has ended and new trends are forming. He said he’s not sure if the village currently meets all levels of housing needs, from retirement communities to first-time homeowners.

Collins said he’d still like to see an independent study tell the village what will be needed. He said with westward expansion, the village’s population could go from 42,000 to 75,000 one day.

Votes were not needed for either proposal.

Joliet District 204 board gets strategic plan update

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet District 204’s superintendent recently shared with the board an update on actions officials have taken on a wide-spanning strategic plan to improve various aspects of the district.

The district plans to have its Strategic Planning Periodic Update meetings Aug. 26, Aug. 27 and Dec. 2. The stakeholders involved in those meetings include parents, community members, students, faculty and staff.

After receiving an audit of the district’s hiring practices Tuesday, Superintendent Cheryl McCarthy asked the report be sent to members of the strategic team.

The audit found no policy or practices at the district that excluded minority applicants but did make recommendations for hiring more.

“I think it has some very good information that would be a very good starting point as we talk about what changes

we can make for our strategic plan,” she said.

She also gave a board an update on where the district is with its action plans for the 2015-16 school year. Some of the action plans resulted in the implementation of blended learning in classes and credit recovery for students.

One action plan was to communicate more with Spanish-speaking families.

McCarthy said the alumni and community relations office was restructured and now the district has a communication specialist who is bilingual.

Another plan was expanding the new teacher orientation program, which includes requiring teachers to meet with instructional coaches and technologists.

“One of the things we found out is that our instructional coaches for our teachers is working really, really well and provides the support our teachers need in order to be successful,” she said.

The district has adopted action plans for the 2016-17 school year that include continued progress on developing blended learning courses, creating a

JOLIET – Channahon Mayor Missey Moorman Schumacher has been elected to the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center’s Board of Directors.

Moorman Schumacher replaces founding CAC Board member Mike Mikuska of Mickey Companies, who is stepping down Missey after 20 years, accord- Moorman ing to a news release Schumacher issued Wednesday by Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow’s office.

The CAC was established 20 years ago by Glasgow, who chairs the board of directors, as a nonprofit agency to improve investigations into cases involving child sexual abuse. Children in those cases are brought to the center, where trained forensic interviewers obtain an accurate statement in a neutral, non-suggestive and child-friendly environment.

Interviews recorded at the center have been used to successfully prosecute thousands of child predators. The center also provides children and fam-

ilies with advocacy, counseling and social services.

Schumacher has a background in elementary education and psychology.

She also brings extensive background working in the community with children and local police, according to the news release, as well as serves on the Tri-River Police Training Board and is involved in the WESCOM emergency dispatch center.

Glasgow thanked Mikuska for his years of commitment and service. He also noted that Moorman Schumacher has a passion for working with and protecting children.

“She is a dedicated and innovative public servant. I am truly honored that she is putting her experience and creativity to work for an agency that is vital to law enforcement and to the entire community,” Glasgow said in the news release.

Moorman Schumacher said the CAC provides an essential service to vulnerable children.

“It is our duty to make certain that the young victims of abuse receive not only justice and protection, but the advocacy and services necessary to help them begin to heal,” she said in the news release.

Chicago man leads police on Police: Men ticketed after dumping chase in Plainfield and Joliet concrete slabs on Lily Lake roadway

bstanley@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Police say a fuel thief led officers on a car chase and foot chase Tuesday night.

At 7:09 p.m., Lawrence D. Cummins, 24, put gas in a 2005 Ford Windstar at Thorntons, 15800 Route 59 in Plainfield, and drove off without paying, Plainfield Police Department Sgt. Mike Fisher said. “ W h e n t h e g a s Lawrence D. drive-off was called Cummins in, one of our officers happened to be right in the area and quickly found the vehicle,” Fisher said.

The officer attempted to have the Windstar stop and pull over, but the minivan increased speed and continued south into Joliet, Fisher said.

Joliet Police Department Lt.

Kevin LaBolle said the pursuit moved into the Wesmere subdivision and Cummins lost control near Pebble Beach and Wildflower drives, striking a stop sign and a tree in the parkway.

“Cummins then fled the vehicle and a foot chase began, but the Plainfield officer was assisted by an off-duty Joliet officer who was nearby,” LaBolle said.

Cummins was captured a short time later and complained of illness, Fisher said. After being examined at a hospital, he was taken to the Plainfield police station and later booked into the Will County Jail.

Cummins, of the 8900 block of South Union Avenue in Chicago, has been charged with aggravated fleeing from police, resisting arrest, retail theft and driving without a license.

According to jail records, he has previously been arrested on retail theft charges by Plainfield police in 2012 and by Joliet police in 2015.

asloboda@shawmedia.com LILY LAKE – A transportation official uttered amazement that a Lily Lake road didn’t cave in when a crew excavating a driveway dumped 28 tons of concrete on the pavement, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

Sheriff’s police were called at 5:41 p.m. Aug. 8 to the intersection of Meadowview Lane and Fescue Court in Campton Township for a roadway obstruction consisting of several pieces of concrete in the middle of the road, the report stated. Two Joliet men have been cited in connection with the incident.

The report described the concrete pieces as 5-inch thick slabs that were “large but varied in size.”

Police noted in the report that the blockage would have prevented emergency vehicles from accessing Fescue Court, which dead-ends.

According to the report, the man who reported the obstruction said a company was excavating a concrete driveway on Fescue Court and put the slabs on the road because there was no other place to put them.

The man reportedly told police the road was paved one year ago and de-

scribed the employees as uncooperative.

When police questioned an employee about the dumping, the employee indicated he was following his boss’ orders and said a dump truck would retrieve the materials, the report stated.

Police reportedly told the employee to return the concrete to its original address and ordered him to call his boss.

Upon arrival, the boss denied ordering his employees to dump the materials on the road and described the situation as the “stupidest thing he has ever seen,” the report stated.

Based on measurements of the driveway and broken slabs, a quality control inspector with the Illinois Department of Transportation determined the concrete weighed 28 tons, the report stated.

It noted the road is a 6-ton roadway.

“He was surprised the roadway did not cave in,” the report stated.

A village official assessed the damage, which was estimated at $6,000 to $8,000, according to the report.

Police issued two ordinance violations in the incident. Andrew Quinn, 41, of Joliet was cited with illegal dumping, and John Mesker, 39, of Joliet was cited with not obtaining a permit. The report indicated a dump truck arrived about an hour after the road was cleared.

Police: Joliet man used device to look up women’s skirts at festival SHAW MEDIA SOUTH ELGIN – A 59-year-old Joliet man faces criminal charges on accusations he used a recording device to surreptitiously obtain images underneath women’s skirts during a South Elgin festival, according to a news release from the South Elgin Police Department.

According to the news release, South Elgin police officers working RiverFest Express – an annu-

al, multi-day festival near Village Hall – noticed a man “acting suspiciously” Sunday in the carnival area.

Officers made contact with the man, Charles R. Galitz, and determined he had a Charles concealed audio/vid- R. Galitz eo recording device, the news release stated.

“It is alleged Galitz was using the device to surreptitiously video under the skirts of adult women to obtain images of their undergarments without their knowledge,” the news release stated.

Galitz, of the 1300 block of Texas Avenue in Joliet, was charged with three counts of unauthorized video recording and live video transmission, the news release stated.

He is expected to appear at 9 a.m.

Police: Victim says he was shot in back on Joliet street

Joliet Police Department Lt.

Kevin LaBolle said that about 5:30 p.m. the 20-year-old man came into Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox with a gunshot wound to his back.

“He said he’d been walking in the area of Second and Eastern ave-

nues when he heard shots and ran,” LaBolle said.

The man’s injuries are not considered life-threatening. No description of the shooter was provided to police.

Tyrell Flowers was one of those students, who said he was doing well on his first day of school. He also was wearing his new shoes.

For his coloring project, Flowers colored the typical items of a classroom – apples, pencils, rulers – and said he was starting to get good at coloring within the lines.

“I’m so excited for school,” he said.

Joyce is survived by her loving children, Ron (Pam) Burton of Pingree Grove and Tracy (Aileen Murphy) Burton of Chicago; her cherished grandson, Ellery Burton; as well as her niece, Lori Feldott; her nephew, Billy Sharp; and her cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Norma Bundy; and her sister, Julieanne Sharp.

Joyce was a graduate of Plainfield High School, class of 1962. She was a member of the Lake-Cook Chapter of the Illinois Audubon Society, the Business & Professional Women Associations in Morris and Palatine. She was a longtime employee of the Matteson’s TruValue Hardware in Morris and, most recently, was a reservationist for Experiant (formerly ITS). In her leisure time, Joyce truly enjoyed birdwatching with her friends.

The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of the Northshore University HealthSystem Kellogg Cancer Center for the loving care and support provided to Joyce for the last four years.

Jessie Newell “Eight Ball,” born Sept. 12, 1944, in Sandersville, MS. He was a resident of Joliet for over 50 years. He passed away on Saturday, Aug. 6, 2016. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He was employed by Johns Manville for many years and retired in 2000. He was also employed by First Student Bus and Septran Bus Service for the past 11 years. He received safety driving recognitions, as well as perfect attendance. Jessie enjoyed playing pool, fishing and played on several bowling leagues.

He is preceded in death by his father, Isom Newell; and brothers, Leathaniel Newell, Henry Newell and Nelson Newell.

Charles L. Brehm, 87, of Morris, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2016, at the Morris Hospital.

Born Oct. 30, 1928, in Ashley, he was the son of the late Leonard and Anna (Ogrzewalla) Brehm.

Raised and educated in Ashley, he graduated from Ashley High School in 1946. He attended Southern Illinois University for one year. Charles was drafted for service with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and served from 1952 to 1954. He worked at Caterpillar in Joliet for 31 years. He moved to Morris in 1969.

Charles married Marcia Lesch on May 29, 1952. She preceded him in death in 1985. On July 14, 1990, he married Helen (DeYoung) Frejd.

He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and enjoyed working in the garden, playing ping-pong and hiking in the mountains of Arizona. He was a deacon of the First Baptist Church of Morris.

Surviving are his four children, Cheryl (David) Johnson of Morris, Nancy Hextell of Sacramento, CA, Tim (Monica) Brehm of Morris and Erica (Larry) Mann of Yuma, AZ; stepchildren, Russell (Sylvia) Frejd of VA, William (Barbara) Frejd of Lockport and Donald Frejd of Morris; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marcia; and his parents.

Preceded in death by her loving husband, Clyde H. Osterholtz (1977); her parents, Henry and Katherine Schlau; two brothers, Hank Schlau (WWII) and Eugene Schlau; and two sisters, Pauline Santanello and Lillian Smith.

Violet was born on April 21, 1922, on her family farm in Centralia. She received her name when her sister Lillian brought her mother a bouquet of “violets,” so she was named Violet. Azaleas were also in bloom, so hence her middle name. Until her passing, Violet continued to farm acreage on the family farm where she was born. On July 28, 1941, Violet married the love of her life, Clyde H. Osterholtz in St. Louis in the St. Louis County Courthouse, visible from the St. Louis Cardinal Stadium, where she enjoyed sporting her pride to a St. Louis Cardinals’ victory over the Chicago Cubs.

Violet was a 70-year member of First Presbyterian Church in Joliet, where she was a deaconess and taught Sunday school for many years. She was involved in her daughter’s school activities and especially loved time spent listening to their orchestra concerts. Following the passing of her husband, Violet worked at Wieboldt’s Department Store. Her love of farm life was shown in her passion for gardening and yard work. She cherished the time she spent with her family, friends and especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Edna quietly departed this life on Aug. 12, 2016, at Hope Hospice in Bonita Springs, Florida. She is the daughter of the late Fred and Dora M. (nee Allen) Messer and was born on Nov. 2, 1933, in Hardshell, KY. She was educated in the Brathitt County School System and graduated from Robinson High School in Ary, KY. Edna attended nursing school in Louisville, KY, where she graduated as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Edna was united in marriage to Louis R. Peyla, the love of her life, in December 1976, and he preceded her in death on March 28, 2014.

Edna was a volunteer at Trinity School, where she taught arts and crafts to mentally and physically disabled children. She was also a Cherry Lady at Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet as a result of her generous spirit and pleasant personality she was loved by many. Her Christian life was as beautiful as the flowers that she loved so well, and her influences will forever remain in the lives of all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her beloved brothers, Wesley, Fred Jr., and Arlie Messer; and stepdaughter, Julie Peyla Holladay.

Her beautiful life will forever be treasured in the lives of her children, Debra L. Cain of Marion and Donna J. (Bill) Bradley of Rydal, GA; her grandchildren, William D. Clemons, Rocky E. Emmanual G. Vidalakis “Mike,” age 92, passed away peacefully, Aug. 12, 2016, in Shawano, WI. Mike was born Sept. 29, 1923, in Rockdale, the son of George K. and Ruby (nee Stravatziakis) Vidalakis. He was raised in Joliet where he spent his entire life until relocating to Shawano, WI, to be near his son and family.

A veteran of World War II, he proudly served with the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946 attaining the rank of corporal. Emmanual was a graduate of Roosevelt University, Chicago, where he received a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. He later attended Kent Law School, Chicago. Mike had a distinguished career as an insurance correspondent for Commercial Credit Inc. He was an lifelong member of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, past president of the Church Board and an active member of AHEPA, where he served as secretary, president and district governor. He was a lifelong member and certified instructor of the NRA. He taught rifle marksmanship to teens and young adults for many years. As a member of the Illinois State Rifle Association, Mike loved competitive shooting and was a former state champion. He also enjoyed fishing, trap shooting, deer and turkey hunting with his family.

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner and Illinois Republicans at the Illinois State Fair on Wednesday all but ignored the party’s bid to reclaim the White House, focusing on term limits, political map-drawing and loads of campaign cash to defeat “machine” Democrats who have a vise grip on the General Assembly.

The party’s presidential nominee, Donald Trump, was mentioned only sparingly during Governor’s Day festivities. Instead, the first-term governor got the crowd to chant “Term limits now!” even though the earliest the question could go to the ballot would be in 2018.

He also extolled the virtues of taking politics out of drawing legislative district maps. That question’s place on the November ballot is being challenged in court by Democrats.

Rauner promised that the GOP would outspend Democrats this fall to pick up seats in the House, where Democrats outnumber Republicans, 71-47, and the Senate, where the spread is 3920.

Autopsy: Chicago 18-year-old died from single shot by police

CHICAGO – An autopsy report released Wednesday shows that the black man shot and killed last month by a Chicago police officer during a chaotic chase died of a single gunshot wound.

The one shot hit 18-year-old Paul O’Neal on the right side of the back, the report said. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office reported that toxicology tests also indicate O’Neal didn’t have drugs in his system when he was shot July 28.

Feds want 10-year sentence in red-light camera bribery case

CHICAGO – Federal prosecutors want a 10-year prison sentence for a former Chicago official convicted of taking bribes to steer $100 million in red-light camera contracts to a Phoenix company.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that federal prosecutors, in a memo filed with the court Monday evening, asked U.S. District Judge Virginia Kendall to consider a 10-year sentence “as a floor” for John Bills. The former second-in-command at Chicago’s Department of Transportation was convicted in January of bribery, conspiracy and extortion.

Bills was accused of accepting envelopes stuffed with cash, along with gifts – including condos in two states and a Mercedes – to help Redflex Traffic Systems obtain contracts in a decadelong scheme.

Former central Illinois fire chief sentenced for theft

BLOOMINGTON – The former fire chief for Allin Township in central Illinois has been sentenced to 120 days in jail for stealing more than $19,000 from the fire district.

Thirty-one-year-old Josh Deterding of Atlanta, Illinois, also will serve 30 months of probation under the sentence a judge handed down Monday.

The Pantagraph reported that Deterding pleaded guilty in April to stealing from the fire district where he worked for 13 years before his 2015 arrest.

Authorities said that for several years, he would transfer money to petty cash accounts where he could access it.

Police said an investigation found that Deterding used the

fire district debit card at ATM machines in bars.

U of I developing models to test power grid protection

URBANA – The University of Illinois said it has received an $18.7 million federal grant to develop a way to test the United States’ response to and recovery from any attack on the country’s electric grid.

The university said Tuesday that the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency awarded the grant.

Tim Yardley, associate director for technology at the Information Trust Institute at Illinois, said the project’s aim is to take a “generational step forward” in proving that the tools being built to deal with such an attack are reliable.

The project will build models of the grid that are first run under normal conditions and then with disturbances that mimic both attacks and natural problems.

NEW YORK – Frustrated with his troubled candidacy, Donald Trump is hinging his presidential hopes on a risky bet: that the fiery populism and freewheeling style that won him the Republican nomination will give him a better shot at the White House than uniting his party and rallying moderate voters.

Trump underscored that conviction Wednesday with a staff overhaul at his campaign’s highest levels, the second shake-up in the past two months. The Republican nominee tapped Stephen Bannon – a combative conservative media executive with no presidential campaign experience – to serve as CEO of his White House bid.

Pollster Kellyanne Conway, who has known Trump for years and gained his trust during her brief tenure working for the businessman, will serve as campaign manager.

The moves are aimed in part at marginalizing campaign chairman Paul Manafort, a longtime Republican operative who pushed Trump to moderate his tone and improve relations with skeptical Republican officials. In breaking with that approach, Trump appears set on finishing the race on his own terms – win or lose.

Manafort’s past work for a pro-Russian Ukrainian political party also has become a potential liability for Trump. The Associated Press reported Wednesday that Manafort helped the party secretly route at least $2.2 million in payments to a pair of prominent Washington lobbying firms.

While Manafort maintains his title, Trump allies made clear that Bannon will oversee the campaign staff and operations.

“He believes he should stay true to what got him this far,” said David Bossie, the leader of a pro-Trump super PAC. “It’s essentially, ‘Dance with the one who brung ya.’ ” Rarely do presidential campaigns undergo this level of tumult at this stage of the general election. Wednesday’s announcements come fewer than three months before Trump’s Election Day faceoff with Democrat Hillary Clinton, and roughly six weeks before early voting begins.

Conway downplayed the notion of internal dissent at campaign headquarters at Trump Tower, telling the AP that the staffing changes are “an expansion at a critical time in the home stretch.”

In the aftermath of the shake-up, Trump spent the day in New York. He attended a breakfast fundraiser with Manafort, who subsequently led two staff meetings, and later convened a security roundtable attended by allies, including former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Trump also received his first classified national security briefing at an FBI field office in lower Manhattan.

According to Republicans close to Trump, the campaign shake-up is aimed more at allowing him to fully embrace the aggressive style that helped him with the primary rather than taking a more restrained, traditional approach.

While Trump’s first staff shuffle in June was driven by concerns among top Republicans, as well as the candidate’s children, this latest upheaval appears to come directly from the businessman. Republicans said he’s grown angry with his sinking poll numbers and frustrated that many GOP lawmakers remain skeptical of his candidacy.

Several Republicans discussed the personnel changes on the condition of anonymity, because they were not authorized to publicly disclose internal thinking.

Trump vented his frustration during a weekend fundraiser in the Hamptons. He was encouraged to bring Bannon on board by Rebekah Mercer, a member of a prominent GOP fundraising family that has close ties to the Breitbart executive. Conway also has ties to the Mercers.

Bannon has circled Trump’s orbit in recent years and has been in touch with aides to the billionaire throughout the campaign. Bannon’s website has been fiercely loyal to Trump for months and sharply critical of Republican leaders, including House Speaker Paul Ryan.

“Ball control is something that I’ve stressed with all of the teams that I’ve coached.

We have to be a team that passes the ball well and is good in serve-receive. And I think what this team does well right out of the gate is that they serve tough, and that’s a good way to disrupt other teams’ ball control. These girls get a lot of touches on the ball, so the emphasis is every time that they touch a ball, let’s make sure that it’s a quality touch.”

Although the Warriors may have a smaller squad from a numbers standpoint, they’re a pretty close group, and that should work to their advantage throughout the season.

“We may have a smaller team than we did last year since we only have 10 girls, but we’ll be able to have a strong lineup,” senior libero Cassie Ruettiger said. “Some of us have definitely known each other for a while, and we’re friends off of the court as well as on the court, so that helps. We just need to take what Coach Lawrence says and put it into action on the court.”

There’s also a competitive drive and will to win that the players share with their new coach, and that figures to translate into plenty of success this season.

“We’re really close, and our team-bonding helps a lot on the court, and my teammates always motivate me to do better,” senior middle hitter and outside hitter Maddie Clarida said. “We all take each other’s advice, we’re very coachable, and we all want to win. I think

Although it may take some time for the Warriors to adjust to their new coach and come together as a team, it’s a safe bet that they’ll be performing at a high level when the playoffs begin.

“I definitely think that we’re going to have a good season this year,” setter and right-side hitter Noelle Knezz said. “We’re all so open with each other and have nothing to hide. We’re all really strong players and we listen to each other and help out each other. We’re close, so we know what we have to fix when other people tell us what we need to do.”

“We’d love to get back to the playoffs since it’s been a while,” senior linebacker Ryne Travis said. “I think this is the team that can do it. The juniors are looking pretty good and are definitely putting a lot of work in, and this year’s seniors are high-energy and we come out to practice every day looking to get better.

“Last year was tough. It’s easy to focus on the one play that we missed.

But what happened were a bunch of preventable things early in games and that’s what we’re trying to get rid of this year. We’re trying to tighten up our defense and get better at tackling and be more aggressive and I think doing that will help us with preventing those mistakes.

Our defense is loud and energetic, and we’re hitting. The key for us is to be a team and not individuals.”

Schaumburg edges Slammers Lockport’s Augello falls short in bid for bronze The HERALD-NEWS SCHAUMBURG – When the Joliet Slammers allow just two runs during a game, you can generally count on them to pick up a victory.

But the Slammers collected only four hits in their Wednesday matinée at Schaumburg and as a result, wound up dropping a 2-1 Frontier League decision to the Boomers.

Despite allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out five in seven innings, Sean Townsley was the hard-luck loser for Joliet (43-36).

Kagen Hopkins got the win after allowing just one run on three hits while fanning six in seven innings.

The Slammers, who lead

Washington by 41/2 games for first place in the East Division, got their lone run in the fifth when Joe Staley doubled in Mike Garza, who rejoined the team on Monday. A year ago, Garza led Joliet in hitting (.292) and RBI (59).

The HERALD-NEWS RIO DE JANEIRO – Lockport graduate Haley Augello fell short in her bid to medal in wrestling at the Summer Olympics.

The dream ended Wednesday when Augello lost, 3-2, to two-time World medalist Zhuidyz Eshimova of Kazakhstan in the repechage round.

According to a USA Wrestling report, Augello pressed the pace from start to finish against Eshimova, controlling the majority of the bout. But, an errant shot attempt leading to Eshimova points led to her downfall.

“It’s a heartbreak, especially when you are training hard for something,” Augello was quoted in the USA Wrestling report. “In the sport of wrestling, I like to look at it as a game of cat and mouse. If you want to be the mouse, that’s fine. If you want to run, that’s fine. I am young. I am not as experienced. Just the second time wrestling international at 48 kg. So you can be the mouse if you want. I am going to hunt you down. I’ll get you next time.”

LOCKPORT – It’s safe to say that the players on Lockport’s football team don’t need to be reminded of how close they got to earning a state playoff berth last season.

If a play here or a play there would have gone their way, the Porters could have finished with a 5-4 record and advanced to the postseason for the first time since 2011.

Instead, they didn’t capitalize on turnovers and fell 28-21 to Downers Grove North in their opener, gave up a long score on the final play in a 26-22 setback at Minooka the next week and saw a late lead slip away in a 28-21 loss to Sandburg in Week 4 during a 4-5 season.

Needless to say, coach Dan Starkey doesn’t have to say much to motivate this year’s squad, which appears determined to halt the Porters’ longest playoff drought in two decades.

“Last year was supposed to be the team, but we didn’t get there,” senior strong safety Eric Jungheim said. “The key is we need to come together as a brotherhood with no individuals. We need to work together and have everyone on board. It’s all about team chemistry.

“Our defense is a little small, but

we are hard-hitting and aggressive.

Because of our team chemistry, we know all that we need to do to get the job done. I see in our players’ eyes that we all like to compete at a really high level and that’s what I love about this team. And I think that’s what’s going to get us far this year.”

With returning starters back such as quarterback Ben Davis, receiver Patrick Cooper, running back Austin Hoffman and guard George Kringas on offense, and ends Josh Baker and David Balderrama, tackle Tommy Mulhall and Jungheim back on defense, the Porters have plenty of experience at key positions, which should help them in tough situations.

“We just try to practice hard every day,” junior super back and linebacker Austin Hoffman said.

“We’re always going 100 percent and never take a play off because we’re always trying to keep it competitive.

We look back at last year and realize that we messed up, but this is a new year and we’re moving forward so we’re just going to try to go harder all of the time.

“What I like about this team is that we’re very aggressive and always going at it. And I like how we’re more as one as a team this year and we mesh since we know each other better.”

Soler, Lester lead Cubs to win over Brewers

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Jorge Soler hit a three-run homer during a fiverun first inning, Jon Lester pitched into the seventh and the Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers, 6-1, on Wednesday night for their 17th win in 20 games.

Soler’s shot capped the inning after RBI singles by Ben Zobrist and Addison Russell.

Lester (13-4) got his fourth straight win, giving up one run and three hits in 62/3 innings while striking out seven. He hasn’t lost since July 3.

Brewers starter Jimmy Nelson (6-13) walked leadoff batter Dexter Fowler then hit Kris Bryant with a pitch to begin the first.

Soler’s homer on a 2-2 pitch was a convincing smash that landed just under the videoboard atop of the left-center field stands.

Anderson hit a two-run homer and Frazier had a two-run double for the Sox. Cleveland starter Carlos Carrasco struck out 11 in 62/3 innings. Lonnie Chisenhall homered and drove in three runs while Carlos Santana also homered.

Brandon Guyer’s two-run single gave Cleveland its tworun lead in the fifth that held up until the Sox’s big ninth.

Chisenhall’s homer in the second put Cleveland ahead, but Carrasco gave up Anderson’s home run in the third.

Santana homered and Chisenhall had an RBI single in the third, but Chicago scored three times in the fourth, sparked by Frazier’s double.

Chofu looks like it has the talent to do so having averaged 14.25 runs per game while outscoring opponents 57-6 in its qualifying regional.

“I like that pace (winning four of last five),” Yamashita said through a translator. “They have a long life after this, but it is a nice experience for them. We do our best all the time.”

Older players won’t be able to play in Little League’s showcase event much longer. The league announced last fall it would move its age determination date from Dec. 31 to Aug. 31 for all its baseball divisions. It means this is the first of the last two years 13-yearolds will be eligible.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – It’s not easy to advance to the Little League World Series. Bowling Green Eastern coach Scott Kelley knows that much.

It’s tougher for him to think his players would battle through the Great Lakes Region for the second straight year and find themselves in position to win a title again. But here the Kentucky kids are with a roster dotted with veterans – an almost unattainable luxury.

“It’s been a journey,” Kelley said as his players ate an early dinner at a picnic Wednesday, hours before play begins in the 70th Little League World Series.

One that picks up where it left off last year for infielder Spencer Newman and pitchers Devin Obee and Carson Myers. All three were on the Bowling Green team that went 2-2 last year.

Now, they’re the old guys who started last year and helped lead Bowling Green to a 3-0 romp through the Great Lakes Regional into the 16-team championship field in South Williamsport.

“Both Devin and Carson pitched last year,” Kelley said. “That gives them that advantage of having been on the mound and in the spotlight in that situation. So that certainly helps.

I think in terms of those three being leaders on the team, can kind of calm the nerves.”

It also helps that their teammates already got a taste of playing inside Howard J. Lamade Stadium where the finals will be played on Aug. 28. Bowling Green beat Essexville, Michigan, in its regional final in a game that was moved 10 hours east to the championship stadium after bad weather forced the game’s postponement in Indianapolis.

But the postponement may also have a negative effect. Bowling Green might have to rely on one of its veterans early, too, as ace pitcher Isaiah Head will be unavailable after pitching Monday’s game.

“He’s throwing in the mid-70s, and throwing from three different angles and his offspeed has been pretty good,” Kelley said. “And he’s been accurate.

His strike percentage has been 75 percent, so he’s been lights out for us. We were going all out to win that game

U.S. routs Argentina, moves into semifinals

RIO DE JANEIRO – The nail-biters ended for the U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team.

So did a golden era of international basketball.

Emphatically stopping a stretch of three straight close games, the Americans advanced to the semifinals by sprinting past Manu Ginobili and Argentina, 105-78, on Wednesday night.

In front of a chanting, flag-waving crowd of Argentines who came to throw a raucous farewell party for their Golden Generation, the Americans delivered their most complete performance in Rio. “What a remarkable run by Argentina and so we knew we had to match that energy tonight. I thought we did,” U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski said.

Turning a slow start into an early ending with a 27-2 run in the first half, the Americans put away one old rival and set up a meeting with another. They will play Spain on Friday in a rematch of the past two gold-medal games.

Kevin Durant scored 27 points for the Americans, who had played three straight close games for the first time under Krzyzewski, setting off a round of questions at home and in Rio de Janeiro about what was wrong with them.

The answer might be nothing. At least there wasn’t against Argentina.

“We wanted to come out and our whole thing was dominating,” forward Carmelo Anthony said.

The Americans eliminated Argentina for the third straight Olympics, this time ending not only a tournament run for the Argentines but also a couple careers.

Ginobili, 39, and longtime 36-yearold teammate Andres Nocioni retired from international competition after the game, 12 years after winning gold in Athens.

“We had a chance to grow up together and do some good things, win some games together. It was fun. It’s a lot of years,” said Luis Scola, who also is 36 but plans to keep playing.

Ginobili scored 14 points in his final game in Argentina’s blue and white, tearing up after receiving applause from his fans and warm wishes from his opponents.

“They congratulated me, and I’m very proud of their words,” Ginobili said. “They were very kind, very respectful and when legends of the game showed their respect, it has an extra value.”

The Americans have won 23 straight in the Olympics since Argentina beat them in the 2004 semifinals,

and this was how they usually do it: too much firepower, too much defense, and way too much talent.

It took a little while to get going, as Argentina opened a 10-point lead. The Argentines made nine of their first 10 shots inside the arc and led 19-9 when Nocioni drilled a 3-pointer. But the Americans finished the first period with a 16-2 run, getting the final six points from DeMarcus Cousins, to take a 25-21 edge to the second.

Three-point plays by Cousins and Jimmy Butler around Durant’s 3-pointer in an 11-0 start to the second made it 36-21 before Facundo Campazzo stopped the onslaught with a threepoint play.

Algonquin native Jager realizes dream with silver medal

RIO DE JANEIRO – Evan Jager knew in the final 100 meters he didn’t have a chance to win gold at the Rio Olympics.

Jager entered the final 100 meters of the 3,000-meter men’s steeplechase on Wednesday 25 meters behind Conseslus Kipruto. The Kenyan looked back at Jager, then showboated and played up to the Olympic Stadium crowd.

But that didn’t matter to Jager. He knew he was about to make history.

The Jacobs High School grad and Algonquin native came across the line with a time of 8:04.28, screaming and fist pumping his way through the last 10 meters.

His medal from the Rio Olympics: silver, the first U.S. man to medal in the event in 32 years.

“It was a lot of years of hard work and day dreaming about the moment all coming true,” Jager said. “It all just happens in five seconds time.”

Jager’s medal hopes never were in doubt from the start. Despite starting on the outside, the Portland resident quickly worked his way into the top five. He crossed the 600-meter mark in second.

Then he made his move, passing

Kipruto to take the lead despite plans not to set the pace.

“I wasn’t planning on taking the lead from that far out but in the moment it seemed like something I needed to do,” Jager said.

Jager led the next four laps as he, Kipruto and Ezekiel Kemboi built up a 50-meter gap to fourth. Kipruto sprinted by him at the start of the final lap, bringing Kemboi along with him.

But Jager found speed in the last 200 meters. He passed Kemboi, jumped over the second-to-last barrier and sought to close the gap. Jager ran out of room to catch Kipruto, but celebrated as if he had won.

“I didn’t know that I had a medal wrapped up until about 100 meters to go,” Jager said. “As soon as I got over the last barrier, I could fully enjoy it.”

His second-place finish put the United States on the podium for the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase for the first time since Brian Diemer took bronze in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

Since that medal, Kenya has won 18 medals in the event, including eight straight gold medals.

“Since I started steeplechase, it’s been one of my goals to be in the mix with the Kenyans and beat some of

them on the day at the championship races,” Jager said.

The result was no surprise for Jager.

He finished sixth in the 2012 London Olympics and scored a second, third and fourth place finish in the 2014 and 2015 Diamond League seasons. He entered the race Wednesday as one of the favorites to medal.

But his calmness surprised him.

Jager said he stressed before the 2012 U.S. Olympic trials, but this time he and his teammates stayed more relaxed, even as the race started and his chance at history arrived.

“Myself and a bunch of teammates, we didn’t feel the pressure of it being an Olympic year,” Jager said. “Somehow, I was able to carry that all the way here.”

Seconds after crossing the line, Jager paraded around the stadium, a U.S. flag in tow. He posed for photos as the sparse crowd cheered him and the Kenyans.

His smile and joy beamed as he took a victory lap.

“I know how big of an achievement it is,” Jager said. “But I don’t know if it’s hit me yet.”

Walsh Jennings-Ross rally to take bronze medal

Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross have won the beach volleyball bronze medal, coming back after losing the first set to beat the host Brazilians at Copacabana.

The win comes less than 24 hours after Walsh Jennings lost on the Olympic beach for the first time in 27 matches over four Summer Games.

Walsh Jennings, a three-time gold medalist, delivered a pair of blocks for the final two points Wednesday night to win 17-21, 21-17, 15-9.

Rollins leads U.S. sweep of 100-meter hurdles

American Brianna Rollins started out fast and never looked back.

Rollins lead the U.S. sweep of the 100-meter hurdles at the Rio Games on Wednesday night, winning with 12.48 seconds.

Although Rollins was unreachable, it came down to hundredths of seconds for the other two medals.

Nia Ali had silver with 12.59 and Kristi Castlin had 12.61 for bronze.

The United States had such strength in depth this year that they could leave world record holder Kendra Harrison at home and still sweep the race.

The U.S. Olympic Committee said two American swimmers were taken off their flight from Brazil by local authorities amid an investigation into a reported robbery involving Ryan Lochte and his teammates.

USOC spokesman Patrick Sandusky said Wednesday night that “Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz were removed from their flight to the United States by Brazilian authorities. We are gathering further information.”

Lochte said he was with Conger, Bentz and another teammate when they were robbed at gunpoint in a taxi as they returned to the athletes village from a party, several hours after the last Olympic swimming events were held. Police have found little evidence so far to support their accounts.

Lochte’s father told The Associated Press that his son had arrived back in the United States.

Vasher returned in a coaching role through Bill Walsh Minority Fellowship

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com Playing in the Super Bowl was an achievement in itself for former Bears cornerback Nathan Vasher. When he looks back at the game now, he can see the extra significance the matchup had in the form of the two coaches, Lovie Smith and Tony Dungy, the first African-American head coaches to meet in the Super Bowl.

“The sky’s the limit. If you want to be a coach, keep working on your craft, you can be in the Super Bowl also. Coach Dungy, Lovie, that was a monumental year for minority coaches to be on a stage like that,” Vasher said during training camp. “Just to see that it started with a program like this, it’s huge.”

That program is the NFL’s Bill Walsh Minority Fellowship, held every year to allow former players or current college coaches an internship working with NFL teams in a coaching capacity during training camp.

Vasher took part this summer, returning to Bourbonnais to help coach the Bears’ defensive backs.

“It’s been great,” Vasher said. “The NFL provides a great opportunity with the minority internship to where you can get more guys into coaching, and you get an up-close look at it.”

Vasher worked with Bears assistant defensive backs coach Sam Garnes, who spent two summers in the internship program after a year in NFL Europe. He played for John Fox in New York and has been an assistant coach under Fox since 2010. “[Fox] does a great job with it. It’s great to see him give a lot of opportunities to guys to get their feet wet,” Garnes said. “Sometimes, you learn that it’s not what you want to do. It’s a tough road.”

Fox sees extra value, too, in the networking aspect of the program. In addition to coaching Garnes and then hiring him after his internship, Fox recalled having Ricky Manning as an intern in Denver – Manning was recently hired in Seattle as an assistant DBs coach in March, and Fox gave Pete Carroll a phone call as a reference for his former player and intern.

“It opens up their network and gives them a chance to meet people that can help them get into NFL coaching,” Fox said.

The Bears had four interns through the program during camp, and there were 134 in the league last summer; and while the opportunities are important, the minority coaching hiring numbers are not improving. ESPN’s

Mike Sando recently went in-depth on the issue and pointed out that of the 22 first-time head coaches hired from 2012-16, only one was a minority: Todd Bowles.

Garnes said there’s “no doubt” he pays attention to the minority coaching statistics.

“Anybody who says no, that’s a lie.

Of course we do,” he said. “All you could do is do the best you can with your opportunity. Hopefully, when you get your opportunity, you can bring someone along with you.”

The Rooney Rule, which requires teams to interview at least one minority candidate for head coach, hasn’t translated into more minorities with head-coaching jobs in recent years.

“Can’t force anybody to hire anybody,” Garnes said. “There’s a lot of good people that gives everyone a chance. The Rooney Rule gives people a chance to get in front of somebody, and still no matter what, the best man should get the job. … If people qualified for a job get the job, that’s the only thing that matters.”

Vasher’s ultimate goal is to get into coaching, and before the internship he worked at his alma mater, Texas.

He hasn’t seen minority coaching numbers from Garnes’ perspective yet, but he knows that the Bill Walsh program is valuable.

“I think it’s great,” he said. “Chicago has done an awesome job of getting a great group of coaches from all walks of the country, different programs, putting us all in the same spot where we can learn from each other, even put you in a situation to learn from other coaches and about their journey and how they navigated it.”

Fox referenced Dan Rooney and said, “the more assistants, in my opinion, that you get in the game that know the game, prospered as players in the game, have a good identity of the game, the better.”

The minority internship program is the starting point for those who want to get into coaching, and like Vasher and Garnes, they can look back at that Bears-Colts Super Bowl as a reminder of the potential.

“That was a great experience. To see that, it’s almost like having a black president,” Garnes said. “It’s something you never thought you would see in your lifetime because there’s not that many black head coaches. If you only have four or five and for two of them to make it, that shows that we’re definitely qualified and we’re past that point.”

Claire Halbur plans to live in the world but not of the world

JOLIET – Claire Halbur can’t wait for the day when she will stand before God’s altar in a wedding gown and finally exchange her purity ring for a wedding ring.

The difference between Halbur, 28, of Joliet, and many young women her age is that Halbur has never dated, is not engaged and won’t be getting married. Halbur is preparing to become a consecrated virgin, a decision she said “resonates deeply in her heart and in her soul.”

“I only shared it initially with my family and my spiritual director,” Halbur said. “It was almost too precious to talk about freely or publicly, initially.”

Halbur said the tradition of consecrated virgins goes back to early days of the Catholic church, predating organized religious orders. A resurgence occurred in the 1970s, when it became a recognized vocation in the church, and the numbers are growing, Halbur said.

As of 2008, there were about 3,000 consecrated virgins all over the world, according to the United States Association of Consecrated Virgins at consecratedvirgins.org. The vocation still is unfamiliar to many people, even Catholics, Halbur added.

Like many women in religious orders, consecrated virgins spend much time in prayer and minister to their communities, Halbur said. Unlike women in religious orders, consecrated virgins are financially responsible for themselves.

But don’t feel sorry for Halbur.

“The life of celibacy is about abundance, not deprivation,” Halbur stated in an email. “A woman called to lifelong virginity doesn’t lose her sexuality. I seek to love Christ and others in a fully feminine way.”

The decision required years of discernment for Halbur, including a difficult walk in a spiritual desert where God became silent.

Formation

Halbur grew up in a traditional Catholic home-schooling environment where she became adept in music, wore modest dresses and attended daily Mass. Halbur liked babies and children and assumed she would – one day – marry and raise a family. At her confirmation, Halbur received a chastity ring. She said her par-

“I’m so grateful for that,” Halbur said. “I know the typical teenage girl goes through a lot of heartache, but I had other priorities at that point in my life.”

By her early teens, Halbur had become a catechist in three churches: St. Patrick and St. Joseph in Joliet and St. Dominic in Bolingbrook. She taught private music lessons. Later, she founded and directed the Joliet-based Cherubim Catholic Children’s Choir, was director of music at St. Mary Parish in Plano and coordinated a Catholic children’s day camp.

Halbur also assisted her mother, Barbara Halbur, with a Joliet area Catholic home school group and coordinating state conferences for home school Catholics, which developed her leadership and team-building skills, she said.

“By the time I was an age where I felt old enough to virtuously date, I was focused on other things,” Halbur said.

“And there wasn’t a specific guy in my life that would have led to that.”

At age 21, Halbur said Jesus asked her to “lay all of her very natural human dreams and desire at his feet” and agree to belong 100 percent to him and only him.

“So I surrendered and said, ‘Yes,’ ” Halbur said. “I assumed this meant I would go into a convent soon.”

Discernment

Halbur visited convents of different orders and prayed for direction. God didn’t provide any. Halbur called these years “profound spiritual darkness.”

But she trusted him.

So when the dating offers arrived, Halbur refused them, explaining she was “single, but not available.” She wrote about her journey on various Catholic blogs. In 2013, she was contacted by a media company about the possibility of participating in a project about discernment. In 2014, she was accepted.

The project was the Lifetime reality series “The Sisterhood: Becoming Nuns.” For six weeks, the show followed five Catholic women as they explored the vocation of sisterhood.

After the show ended, Halbur attended a private retreat. She then realized with absolute clarity that God wished her to spend her life and serve him as a

consecrated virgin.

So Halbur, the associate director for the children’s choirs at the Cathedral of St. Raymond, said she approached Bishop R. Daniel Conlon at the Diocese of Joliet, who had two conditions before he would consent.

One was that she finish her music degree at the University of St. Francis in Joliet. And she had to secure a fulltime job. Halbur said the degree is nearly completed. And this week, she moved to Arizona to serve as director of sacred music at St. Mary Magdalene in Gilbert, a position that opened up for her earlier this summer.

Commencement

At St. Mary Magdalene, a 4,500-member “vibrant” parish, Halbur said she will strengthen the existing adult choir and build a children’s choir. These choirs will sing music that is part of traditional Catholic liturgy, such as Gregorian chant and ancient choral hymns in the vernacular.

At a Mass this summer, Halbur said she received confirmation of this new direction during the reading of this verse: “I will lead her into the wilderness and speak tenderly to her.” Hosea 2:14.

“I feel very much that God, in his Year of Mercy, very personally expressed this for his bride,” Halbur said.

There were 213 children and more than 70 volunteers for Deep Sea Discovery. The church was transformed into

an underwater sea world. The children enjoyed creating crafts, engaging in science ex‑ periments, singing new and traditional VBS songs, playing games, hearing Bible stories, making homemade bread, and enjoying unique and nutritious snacks each day.

FRANKFORT – The Frankfort Branch of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has new leadership.

Stuart Lindsey, of Frankfort, was sustained as the branch president of this congregation. Two new counselors in this presidency also were sustained: Julio Barranca and Rick Evans, both of Frankfort.

Leaders in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have regular jobs and families while serving as ecclesiastical leaders without pay. These new leaders constitute a presidency, although they are appointed and sus-

tained rather than voted into position.

They act much as a parish priest or pastor would to care for those in the congregation and to provide worship services.

The boundaries of this congregation reach from Homer Glen on the north to Peotone on the south, New Lenox and Manhattan on the west and Frankfort on the east. It is one of many LDS congregations in the Joliet Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

About 100 people travel from these various towns to attend Sunday Services in Frankfort. The public is welcome.

Joliet Franciscan Sisters accept corporate stance on anti-racism The HERALD-NEWS JOLIET – On Aug. 14, at the chapel of Our Lady of Angels in Joliet, the Joliet Franciscan Sisters held a special ritual as they formally accepted and affirmed a new corporate stance on Anti-Racism.

Sister Dolores Zemont, president, noted that racism is one of the most pressing issues we have to address in society today.

The Anti-Racism Committee (ARC) a sub-committee of the Congregation’s Justice Peace and Integrity of Creation Commission which consists of both sis-

ters and lay men and women, has been working steadily to not only educate the public on anti-racism, but to also transform their hearts and minds.

Through a series of workshops within its sponsored institutions – the University of St. Francis, Joliet Catholic Academy and Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home – the anti-racism committee has been able to make strides in addressing topics such as white privilege, the history of racism and ways to raise consciousness in today’s society.

ARC hopes to be able to make these workshops available to the general public in the near future.

Follow these tips to avoid COPD flare-ups

There is one flu medicine you should not use, however: zanamivir (Relenza), an inhaled powder antiviral. The powder can irritate the lungs of a person with COPD. • Exercise regularly. Aerobic exercise, which increases heart rate and breathing rate, is the most beneficial. Examples include walking and swimming. If you want something less aerobically challenging, try yoga or tai chi. Aim for at least 20 minutes of exercise a day on most days.

• Practice pursed-lip breathing. This technique will help you pace yourself through physical activities. Before you start moving, inhale through your nose so deeply your abdomen expands. Then, as you begin to move, exhale through your mouth with your lips pursed to slow down the airflow.

Your exhalation should last twice as long as your inhalation. When you finish exhaling, rest for a moment, then inhale and start the process again.

• Avoid lung irritants. An important way to prevent flare-ups is to keep your airways from becoming irritated. Many things can affect the airways, including exhaust fumes from your stove, smoke from your fireplace, dry air, molds and mildew. If you have allergies, try to avoid exposure to whatever causes them – pollen, pet dander, house dust, mold and so on.

If you follow these tips, I think you’ll find you have fewer episodes of severe difficulty in breathing.

Dear Dr. K: I have COPD. What can I do to avoid symptom flare-ups?

Dear Reader: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, is a long-term condition that makes breathing difficult. Breathing is a lot easier if you take your medicine and do any other therapy as directed.

Several types of medicines reduce the risk of flare-ups. Inhaled corticosteroids that reduce inflammation in the breathing tubes are one kind. Long-acting bronchodilators that keep the breathing tubes wide are another kind. A third kind are long-acting anticholinergics, which also act to keep the breathing tubes wide.

Other types of medicines are used to treat flare-ups. These include bronchodilator and anticholinergic drugs that act rapidly and do not last as long as the drugs used to reduce the risk of flare-ups.

Besides using the medicines as prescribed, there are other important things you can do to avoid symptom flare-ups: • Prevent respiratory infections. Sudden worsening of COPD often is triggered by a respiratory infection. Any respiratory infection – even a common cold – can cause a flare-up. Do whatever you can to avoid catching whatever is going around. That includes: • Washing your hands frequently with soap and water or alcohol-based instant hand sanitizers.

• Staying away from people who have colds or other respiratory infections.

• Getting a flu shot every year.

• Getting vaccinated against pneumonia as needed.

You also may benefit from an antiviral medication, such as oseltamivir (Tamiflu), for reducing your risk of getting influenza during flu season. An antiviral medication can help speed the resolution of the flu, if you get it. And this, in turn, reduces your risk of a flare-up of COPD.

DEAR ABBY I’m a 21-year-old college student.

Jeanne Recently, my Phillips cousin (also 21) moved in with my parents and me because her mom is verbally and mentally abusive. Lately, I’m having issues with her being here.

She constantly barges into my room, leaving me no time for myself. Most days she ends up napping in my bed instead of hers, leaving drool on my sheets.

When she comes home from school, she drops all of her things in my room. My parents cleared out a room for her, yet most of her stuff is in mine.

She gets ready in my room instead of hers and talks on the phone with her boyfriend loudly while I’m studying or reading.

She’s constantly complaining about school, her boyfriend, work, etc. If I get invited somewhere, she tries to tag along.

I don’t know what to do. I need time for myself. I can’t bring these issues up to her because she’s extremely sensitive and will see it as an attack.

I don’t know how much longer I can take it because she is stuck here until November.

by North-South or three clubs doubled by South, which would be minus 100.

South should respond one notrump. It is a slight underbid, but better than two clubs (or the weird two diamonds). Then, whatever West does, North passes. If you use twoover-one, South bids one no-trump, and, if West passes, North rebids two clubs (natural, or a three-card suit in a minimum balanced hand). After that, South can raise to three clubs to invite game. If West intervenes with two spades, which is highly likely, North passes, and South might well do likewise.

Notice of Intent to Request Release of Funds August 10, 2016 County of Will 302 Chicago St Joliet, IL, 60432 815-774-7894 On or about August 22, 2016 the County of Will shall submit a request to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for the release of Community Development Block Grant funds under Title I of the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974, as amended, to undertake the following project: single-family housing rehabilitation program for the purpose of rehabbing housing units in disrepair in the Fairmont area of Will County. The program will assist an estimated 10 households and utilizes program year 2015 funds that total $119,000.

The proposed program is categorically excluded from the National Environmental Policy Act requirements, but subject to compliance with some of the environmental law and authorities listed at 24 CFR §58.6 and §58.5 of 24 CFR Part 58. In accordance with §58.15, a tiered review process has been structured, whereby some environmental laws and authorities have been reviewed and studied for the intended target area listed above. Other applicable environmental laws and authorities will be complied with when individual properties are identified.

Specifically, the target area has been studied and compliance with the following laws and authorities has been established in this Tier 1 review: Airport Hazards, Coastal Barrier Resources Act, Clean Air Act, Coastal Zone Management Act, Endangered Species Act, Explosive and Flammable Hazards, Farmland Protection Policy Act, Noise Control Act, Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974, and Wild and Scenic Rivers Act.
