JOLIET – Joliet School District 86 officials are proposing a balanced budget for the upcoming fiscal year that includes a roughly $4 million surplus thanks to additional state funding.

Some board inspectors got a look at the tentative fiscal 2017 budget at Wednesday’s finance committee meeting that shows about $163 million in revenue and $159 million in expenses.

The surplus is largely because of $3.39 million in general state aid the district projected to receive, said Tamara Mitchell, assistant superintendent for business and financial services.

The state aid was part of an equity grant that is from the stopgap budget approved by state lawmakers earlier this summer, she said.

This fiscal year is the first time since fiscal 2009 that general state aid for District 86 has been fully funded, she said.

Because of state funding reductions in the past, the cumulative general state aid shortfall for District 86 is $30.6 million, which is money the district will never receive, she said.

“So that $3.39 million is just a fraction really of what the state technically owes us as far as shortfall for general state aid,” Mitchell said.

District 86 is heavily reliant on state funding as it makes up about 68 percent of its revenue. The rest of the revenue is made up of about 22 percent in local funding and about 9 percent in federal funding.

Under the tentative budget, salary increases were offset by a net staff reduction of 13 employees. There also is proposed staff changes for Building Support Services, which includes four task force members for the ground crews and one maintenance and carpenter position.

Board inspectors approved the hiring of Tricia Nagel as the director of teaching and learning, as well as staff changes for several other schools.

Board President Tonya Roberts and Inspectors Christine Kim, Quinn Adamowski and Anthony Contos approved the hiring. Board Vice President Jeffrey Pritz and Inspectors Deborah Ziech and Gwendolyn Ulmer were absent for the vote.

Nagel comes from Bradley Elementary School District where she has been the director of curriculum, instruction and assessment since 2012, according to a district news release.

Golf club emerges as likely banquet operator at Union Station

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Mistwood Golf Club appears to be getting the nod as next operator of the Union Station banquet facility.

The Joliet City Council Economic Development Committee is set to consider Mistwood’s proposal at a meeting at 4 p.m. Thursday.

A review panel is recommending Mistwood’s proposal based in part on plans to use Union Station for more than weddings and banquets.

Dan Bradley, general manager of the golf club in Romeoville, said Mistwood has ideas for a number of events that could bring people into the landmark train station.

“We want to bring something that is more that just banquets,” Bradley said.

“Union Station is a fantastic banquet venue. We want to continue that, but we

want to do more.”

Some ideas suggested by Bradley are craft beer dinners, holiday brunches and family nights at Union Station.

“We want residents in Joliet and neighboring communities to use that space on a regular basis,” he said.

Mistwood does not have the contract, but the panel recommending the company includes Councilman Larry Hug, who is chairman of the Economic Development Committee. The contract ultimately will be decided by the council.

Mistwood Golf Club and Cutting Edge Catering in Shorewood responded to the city’s request for proposals to manage The Grand Ballroom, the name given to the banquet facility on the second floor of Union Station.

Bussean Customer Caterers, which has managed the banquet hall since 2001, notified the city earlier this year that it is leaving in mid-January.

nomic development director for the city of Joliet, to the Economic Development Committee said the review panel considered both companies “excellent” but unanimously recommended Mistwood.

The memo said that Mistwood has proposed a six-year lease with a sliding scale for rent: 15 percent of gross sales up to $500,000, 10 percent of revenues between $500,000 and $750,000, and 5 percent of revenues above $750,000.

Minimum rent would be $1,500 a month.

Bussean’s rent was recently lowered and is now at a flat rate of $5,000 a month plus 15 percent of gross revenues and $4 per event attendee.

Jones noted that the city encouraged companies to consider new uses for the banquet facility.

“Mistwood has proposed an impressive plan to expand banquet activities by incorporating monthly and seasonal events that would have a community focus,” Jones said in the memo.

Three Rivers Festival open to special needs community ahead of general public

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – A year ago, Angie Cruz’s son, Donovan, was hesitant to go on the carnival rides at Three Rivers Festival’s Special Needs Day. Wednesday was a different story.

“He’s into everything this year,” Cruz said of her son, who has attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and sensory processing disorder.

“I appreciate my aunt and uncle bringing us out for this,” said Cruz, who lives in Berwyn. “We don’t have anything like this in the city.”

Special Needs Day, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, kicked off Channahon’s Three Rivers Festival at Central Park at Route 6 and West Bluff Road.

The five-day festival goes through Sunday.

Arlington Heights, opens the carnival to those with special needs and their families free of charge for Special Needs Day, before the general public gains access Wednesday evening.

Channahon has one of the largest gatherings out of the company’s regional circuit, said Rick Stanley, who said the company holds similar events for those with special needs at other festivals.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s hot or cold, we’re here for people with special needs,” Stanley said as Channahon firefighters passed out ice-cold water bottles to attendees in the 90-plus degree heat. “It’s a time for them to enjoy themselves, at no cost.”

Unlike large amusement parks, Special Needs Day provides an affordable, inclusive environment for people with special needs, Stanley said. About 80

Local leaders encourage incoming administrators, teachers at breakfast

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Here are some of the words incoming teachers in Will County use to describe themselves: creative, energetic, dedicated and patient.

Brian Lin, a new Joliet West High School biology and chemistry teacher, described himself as nerdy, which was met with enthusiastic applause and laughter.

He was one of dozens of educators who received a warm welcome and encouragement from local leaders at a breakfast Wednesday at Harrah’s casino in Joliet.

“You demonstrated lots of synonyms for ‘ready to make a difference,’ ” University of St. Francis President Arvid Johnson told them.

The New Educators Breakfast, now in its 18th year, is held by the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry to not only welcome new teachers and administrators before the school year begins, but to forge partnerships.

“In this community, we are proud to have business-education partnerships,” Chamber President Mary Jaworski said. “That’s a key word: partnerships, which means we work together to help meet your challenges in providing the strongest educational base possible.”

The chamber had the new educators from school districts countywide describe themselves in one word.

“I lived my whole life here – all 30 years. I’m a product of the community and the school districts,” Kreiger said.

Luis Gonzalez, the new principal for A.O. Marshall Elementary School, picked two descriptions.

“As an educator, I consider myself encouraging. As an administrator, I am sleep deprived,” he said as the crowd laughed.

Several Joliet, state and national elected officials welcomed the educa-

tors.

Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr. said in the years he’s been coming to the New Educators Breakfast, the crowd has grown larger.

“What does that show? That shows people out there that’s in the education world is looking toward Will County and the Joliet area for a career as teachers in our school districts,” Walsh said.

Educators also were welcomed by representatives from Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park, the Voyager Group, Haunted Trails, United Way of Will County and Lewis University.

that they are working in a community where it is possible to have a political voice. Legislators in the area are wonderful advocates of education, she said.

“Don’t be afraid to speak out. Don’t be afraid to reach out to your legislators as well,” she said.

Joliet schedules Aug. 24 open house on downtown tax The HERALD–NEWS JOLIET – The city will hold an open house Aug. 24 to discuss the proposed expansion of the downtown business tax.

The city of Joliet wants to expand the special service area where the property tax applies to Cass Street, Collins Street and South Chicago Street.

The meeting will be from 4 to 6 p.m. at City Hall, 150 W. Jefferson St. “This open house is to encourage individual dialogue on the proposal from interested parties,” a city news release

issued Wednesday about the meeting states. “In the open house format, individuals may attend at any time during the two-hour event.”

The expansion of the special service area would result in an 8.6 percent property tax increase for eligible property owners in the expanded district, according to the news release.

The tax would apply to business, commercial and industrial property in the special service area.

The city wants to expand the special service area to fund artificial turf at Silver Cross Field, redevelopment of

Chicago Street, the creation of a Van Buren Plaza downtown and several other projects.

The plan was presented to the City Council in June but no vote was taken.

The council is expected to vote Sept. 6 on whether to move forward with the plan and hold a public hearing in October. The council would take a final vote in December, and the tax would be implemented in 2017.

People in the proposed area could stop the district from being formed if 51 percent of owners and electors file an objection within 60 days after the

public hearing is held.

The downtown special service area has been in place since 1980 and generates about $400,000 a year that funds the Joliet City Center Partnership and other activities to promote the downtown area. The expanded tax is estimated to generate an additional $230,000 a year.

The tax is 95 cents per $100 in assessed value.

LOCAL BRIEFS Joliet plans to resurface 13 more streets

JOLIET – The city will resurface 13 more streets this summer, thanks to money left over from the initial outlay of motor fuel tax funds for road repairs.

The city had $413,000 left to spend after resurfacing 60 streets throughout Joliet this summer. The City Council last week approved spending the money on an additional 13 streets.

“They will start toward the end of August,” Public Works Director James Trizna said. “Most of them should be done by the end of summer.”

The city this year received $2.5 million in motor fuel tax funds from the state for street work.

Trizna said the city at times has money remaining after the initial contracts to do the work depending on contract prices.

He speculated that low oil prices might have contributed to lower asphalt costs, resulting in the $413,000 remaining to do more work.

The HERALD–NEWS ELWOOD – The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced closures near Route 53 and Hoff Road in Elwood for an intersection improvement project.

The project will begin Monday, weather permitting. The improvements are part of the Chicago-to-St. Louis highspeed rail program.

In order to complete the work, Hoff Road will be closed east of Route 53 until winter. Route 53 also will be reduced to one lane in each direction during construction.

A posted detour will direct eastbound traffic on Hoff Road to go north on Route 53, east on Mississippi Avenue, and south on Chicago Street to meet back up with Hoff Road. Westbound traffic on Hoff Road will take the reverse route.

Access to Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery will be maintained at all times.

Motorists should expect delays and pay close attention to flaggers and signs in work zones. The intersection improvements will include the addition of right- and left-turn lanes on southbound Route 53 at Hoff Road, as well as new traffic signals and a drainage structure.

Park Forest man pleads guilty for 11th drug conviction

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Park Forest man with a substantial history of narcotics convictions pleaded guilty Wednesday to drug possession.

Jermaine T. Fleming was sentenced to a year in prison as the result of a plea deal presented to Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes. According to police records, this Jermaine is the 39-year-old man’s T. Fleming 11th drug-related conviction.

“Ordinarily, this ... felony carries a sentence of one to three years, but you are eligible for an extended term,” Alessio Policandriotes noted.

“Officers noticed the odor of cannabis coming from the vehicle and felt the defendant was ‘acting a tad strange,’ ” Slazyk told Alessio Policandriotes.

Police searched Fleming and found a baggie containing less than a gram of cocaine, which he said was “for personal use” despite a history of dealing.

“Fleming told the officers, ‘You know me. I snort this ... at parties,’ ” Slazyk said.

Fleming’s lawyer, George Lenard, agreed with Slazyk’s summary to the judge. The defendant did not make any statement before being sentenced.

The National Weather Service issued Wednesday a hazardous weather outlook for north central Illinois and northwest Indiana that goes through Thursday.

There is an elevated heat risk and temperatures are expected to quickly rise into the 90s both days. The heat index on Thursday could be as high as 102 degrees, according to the weather service.

People most vulnerable for heat-related illness include the elderly, those who work or exercise outdoors, infants and children, the homeless or poor, and people with chronic medical conditions, according to a news release from the Grundy County Health Department.

Area residents are encouraged to plan ahead and have a cool place to shelter from the heat.

People should avoid outdoor activity during the afternoon hours, stay

check on relatives and neighbors.

Young children or pets should never be left in a vehicle. Those who must be outside during the heat should wear light-colored and loose-fitting clothing and drink plenty of water.

Heat stroke is the most serious heat-related illness. Telltale signs include: extremely high body temperature; dizziness and nausea; throbbing headache; rapid, strong pulse; and red, hot and dry skin.

Heat exhaustion is a milder form of heat-related illness that can develop after several days of exposure to high temperatures and inadequate or unbalanced replacement of fluids. Symptoms include: heavy sweating; muscle cramps; weakness, fatigue and dizziness; headache, nausea and vomiting; fainting; fast, shallow breathing; cool, moist skin; and a fast pulse.

Shorewood board discusses finances, roadwork and refuse

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media correspondent SHOREWOOD – According to Shorewood Finance Director Anne Burkholder, residents should be proud of the financial direction the Village Board has given, which has left the village in a favorable position.

At Tuesday’s board meeting, Anthony Cervini, of Naperville professional services firm Sikich, addressed the board with an overview of the village’s 2016 comprehensive annual financial report.

In a phone interview, Burkholder broke down the information, stating expenses from fiscal year April 1, 2015, to March 31, 2016, are lower than in the past, and revenues are higher.

“This comes from a positive sales tax performance of our 1 percent state shared sales tax overall, which was a sign of growth in the economy,” Burkholder said.

Burkholder also said the increase in residential and commercial building aided in the increased revenue.

“On the expense side, we had a favorable reduction in energy costs – electric and fuel costs were down. We also had a low number of snow events so salt and

snow removal costs were down from past years,” Burkholder said.

Burkholder said the fund balance of the general fund as of March 31, 2016, was $5.1 million, which includes police, public works, Village Hall and building funds, and excludes water and big capital projects.

The village also has about 15 percent more than the required 25 percent in annual expenses in reserves, leaving a responsible fund balance for a “rainy day.”

The village also heard from Bryan Welch of Christopher B. Burke Engineering on phase two of the Route 52 and River Road intersection work proposal.

According to Welch, the road will be widened where Route 52 and River Road meet, with an additional through lane on Route 52 and right-turn lanes on River Road. New storm sewers, lighting, traffic lights and bike paths will be constructed as well. The board unanimously approved the project, to be federally funded through a grant provided by the Will County Governmental League, and slated the work to begin July 2017.

James A. Ambrose “Jim,” age 49, of Channahon, died suddenly, Monday, Aug. 8, 2016.

He was born Nov. 24, 1966, to Mary Anne (nee Hanrahan) and George Ambrose in Oak Lawn, he was raised and educated in Midlothian attending St. Christopher Grade School then Marist High School, graduating with the class of 1984. He also attended Purdue Calumet College.

Beloved son of Mary Anne and George; loving brother of Kathie (Jeff) Purvis and Kristin Ambrose; proud uncle of Jessie, Kayla, Jake and Josie. Several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive. He will also be missed by his special friend, Kathy McGee. Jim was employed in the refinery industry for many years. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing and playing bags. He was a huge Blackhawks, White Sox and Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He possessed a kind spirit and will be remembered fondly for his huge heart and extreme generosity.

Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Road (at Essington Road) in Joliet where visitation will take place Friday, Aug. 12, 2016, from 3 to 9 p.m. Prayers, Saturday 9 a.m. at the funeral home to Holy Family Catholic Church in Shorewood, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Interment will be private at Good Shepherd Cemetery, Orland Park at a later date.

H. Rita Beltzhoover (nee Ruscin), age 82, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, Aug. 8, 2016, with her loving family at her side, following a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s.

Rita was born to Czechoslovakian immigrants, Mike and Mary Ruscin, on Dec. 9,

1933, in West Frankfort.

She was the youngest of five children. She married Edward Beltzhoover on Aug. 28, 1954, and together they raised seven children with 14 grandchildren.

Rita was loved and adored by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. She was a devout Catholic who raised her family to embrace the same, strong faith she implemented in her daily life. In addition to raising her own children, she became a day care provider who lovingly and patiently cared for many children in her Joliet home for over 30 years. Rita was also a dedicated volunteer at St. Raymond’s, JCHS, and SFA. In 1994, at 61 years of age, Rita earned her associate degree in child development. She enjoyed family vacations to Cocoa Beach, Florida, as well as RV trips to Alaska with her husband and friends. Above all else, Rita cherished the time she spent with her children and grandchildren.

Born in Joliet, living in Lockport most of her life before moving to California in 2004, where she worked as a social worker for API. An avid Chicago Cubs fan, had a great passion for scuba diving, loved to sail, was an exceptional student and had a love and passion for animals, especially her dogs. Kiki had a heart of gold, was friends with everyone, had a positive and bright spirit; in her short time here on earth she has impacted so many lives. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Saunders also was a founding member of the board of directors for The V Foundation for Cancer Research, a charity started by the network after former college basketball coach and ESPN announcer Jim Valvano died of cancer in 1993.

“He was as close to Jimmy V as anybody at ESPN,” said Dick Vitale, who has worked at ESPN for decades with

popular broadcaster, Stuart Scott, at the age of 49 in January 2015 after a bout with cancer.

Saunders was born in the Toronto area and grew up near Montreal.

“He was very proud to be Canadian,” said Leo Rautins, the former NBA player who teamed with Saunders on Toronto Raptors’ telecasts. “He’d mention it every time he could.”

Saunders played hockey at Western Michigan from 1974-76, teaming with former New York Rangers president and general manager Neil Smith.

“One of saddest days of my life today as I grieve suddenly losing my best friend of 42 years, John Saunders. Life will never be the same,” Smith tweeted.

Saunders’ younger brother, Bernie, played 10 NHL games for the Quebec Nordiques from 1979 to 1981.

Saunders started as news director at CKNS Radio in Espanola, Ontario, in 1978. He worked as sports anchor at CKNY-TV in North Bay, Ontario, from 1978 to 1979, and at ATV News in New Brunswick in 1979-80 before he became sports anchor for CITY-TV in Toronto from 1980 to 1982.

Saunders worked as a sports anchor at WMAR-TV in Baltimore from 1982 to 1986 before joining ESPN. While at ESPN, he doubled as a play-by-play man for the Raptors.

“I think you’d have a hard time finding anyone to say anything bad about John,” Rautins said. “He was very giving, very caring, very intelligent.”

Saunders lived in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, with wife Wanda. They had two daughters, Aleah and Jenna.

Paul is survived by his son, Anthony Hamilton; granddaughter, Anaya Hamilton; mother, Comoria Covington Stewart; brother Andrew (Gwendolyn) Stewart; and sisters, Deborah Stewart, Valerie Stewart and Clarissa (Keith) Morris.

He is proceeded in death by his father, Robert Wilson Stewart Sr.; brother, Robert Wilson Stewart Jr.; and three sisters, Brenda Stewart, Tynjia Stewart and Lillian Stewart.

He loved cooking, gardening and fishing.

NEW YORK – John Saunders, the versatile sportscaster who has hosted ESPN’s “The Sports Reporters” for the last 15 years, has died, the network announced Wednesday. He was 61.

Saunders joined ESPN in 1986. The Canadian did play-by-play, led NHL Stanley Cup and World Series coverage on ESPN and ABC, and hosted studio shows for baseball, college football and college basketball.

A cause of death was not announced.

“This tragic news brings us unspeakable sorrow. John was the patriarch of our family, and we can’t believe he is gone,” Saunders family said in a statement. “We are sincerely touched by the outpouring of support and sadness, which is a reflection of the character and integrity that defined him.

“While we don’t yet have all the specifics, John wasn’t feeling well physically in recent days and sadly, he was unresponsive earlier this morning.

We appreciate all of the thoughts and prayers for our cherished father, husband, brother and uncle.”

Saunders took over as host of “The Sports Reporters,” a Sunday morning staple of ESPN programming, after Dick Schaap died in 2001. Saunders played the role of calm traffic cop on the panel show that features three sports journalists volleying opinions on the top sports news of the day.

Vitale said Saunders was a diabetic, but he was not ailing, and the death of one of his closest friends was unexpected. Saunders has been the master of ceremonies at Vitale’s gala and V Foundation fundraiser in Sarasota, Florida, in 10 of 11 years the event has been held, said the longtime college basketball analyst.

When Vitale had to have throat surgery that threatened his career in 2008, Saunders surprised him at the hospital and was there with Vitale before and after the procedure.

“The doctor told me that there was a good chance it was going to be cancer,” Vitale told the AP in a phone interview.

“I said, ‘John, do me a favor. When you come in that room after just give me thumbs up if it’s not ... and if it is don’t do anything.’ And when I woke, the first guy I saw after surgery was John and I saw thumbs up and we hugged.”

Vitale added: “He was like family.

I’m so shocked.”

The news of Saunders’ death was reported on ESPN’s morning edition of “SportsCenter” from the Olympics in Brazil by anchor Hannah Storm, who struggled to compose herself enough to get through the announcement.

“John’s passion for his family, his nation, his favorite sport & the V foundation will stay with me forever,” NBC’s Mike Tirico, a longtime ESPN colleague of Saunders’, tweeted. “As will his kindness and support.”

Kirk, Dold break with Trump on immigration

By SARA BURNETT The Associated Press CHICAGO – Two Illinois Republicans considered among the nation’s most vulnerable congressional incumbents are breaking from their party and its outspoken presidential nominee, Donald Trump, to push laws that would include a path to citizenship for people living in the country illegally.

Rep. Bob Dold and Sen. Mark Kirk joined GOP Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart of Florida and business leaders at an event Wednesday in Chicago. They argued comprehensive immigration reform would help the economy, ensure companies have the workers they need and is the right thing to do.

“It’s about people before politics,” said Dold, whose district north of Chicago is home to large numbers of Hispanic voters and Fortune 500 companies. “We need to fix a broken system.”

Immigration has been a tricky issue for Republicans, particularly as the electorate has grown more and more diverse. After a dismal showing at the polls in 2012, leaders said the party must become more inclusive if it is to win back the White House. The

Police: 4 people, dog found stabbed in suburban home

BUFFALO GROVE – Four people and a dog were stabbed during a breakin at their Buffalo Grove home early Wednesday and three suspects are in custody, police said.

A 47-year-old man remains hospitalized, but the other three victims – a 16-year-old girl and two males – have been treated and released, Buffalo Grove police said. A fifth person in the home wasn’t harmed, authorities said.

Police believe the incident was not random and are investigating the motive and relationships between the victims and the suspects, Buffalo Grove Police Chief Steven Casstevens said during a Wednesday morning news conference.

Police arrived to find two people outside the home with stab wounds and the front door forced in along with

Other endangered Republicans have pushed back on Trump’s more divisive statement statements about immigration but are still supporting his candidacy.

After Trump said all Muslims should be banned from entering the U.S., Ayotte

said she opposes any “religious-based test for our immigration standards.”

Republican Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio blasted Trump for saying a federal judge of Mexican descent couldn’t be impartial because of Trump’s proposal to build the wall.

The pushback has been particularly strong in left-leaning places such as Illinois, where in recent years lawmakers have approved driver’s licenses and extended Mark Kirk health care for some immigrants who are in the country without legal permission.

Even Bill Kunkler, an executive vice president at a Chicago company who has faithfully voted for Republicans for president his entire adult life, called Trump’s comments about immigrants “ugly and hateful” and predicted it will hurt Republicans in November.

“I hope Trump and his supporters are humiliated at the polls,” said Kunkler, who attributes his success in business to the Mexican immigrants who worked beside him in his early years supervising an Illinois quarry.

Dold, who’s in a rematch with Demo-

cratic former U.S. Rep. Brad Schneider, has said he won’t support Trump. Kirk, facing a difficult challenge from Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth, first said he would support the GOP nominee but withdrew his backing in June.

Kirk peppered his remarks at Wednesday’s event with Spanish, talking up a program he started to reunite Mexican families by providing visas for people in Mexico to come to the U.S. But Democratic U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez, one of the staunchest pro-immigrant members of Congress, accused Kirk of flip-flopping on the issue and supporting immigration reform only “when it’s politically convenient.”

Kirk and Duckworth have repeatedly clashed over whether the U.S. should admit refugees from Syria. Duckworth wants the U.S. to accept 200,000 refugees, including 100,000 from Syria. Kirk wants to ban them, saying they pose a national security threat.

He said Wednesday that position doesn’t contradict his support for immigrants because “there’s a difference between Mexican immigrants and Syrian refugees.”

Judge: Van Dyke attorney can’t see records of teen

CHICAGO – Lawyers for the Chicago police officer charged in the 2014 shooting death of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald will not have access to the victim’s juvenile records, a judge ruled Wednesday.

Jason Van Dyke has no legal right to the confidential files simply because he is charged criminally with the teen’s death, Cook County Juvenile Court Judge Patricia Martin ruled.

“I don’t find you have a special interest in these files,” Martin said, citing the state’s Juvenile Court Act.

Surgeon general’s visit highlights opioid crisis

CHICAGO – The U.S. surgeon general’s campaign against prescription painkiller addiction came to Chicago, where he toured a substance abuse treatment facility.

During a visit Wednesday to the Haymarket Center on Chicago’s West Side, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said the nation can end the opioid epidemic only if there is a change in the way addiction is viewed.

Murthy asserted addiction is not a moral failing or a character flaw, but instead is a chronic illness that should be “treated with skill and urgency.”

Murthy’s visit was at the invitation of U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, who cited a rise

Metra calls a halt on its new rail car plan

CHICAGO – The Metra commuter rail agency serving the Chicago area is no longer looking for a vendor to build nearly 370 new cars because of a shortfall in state funds.

Metra officials said Illinois officials have put on hold more than $300 million in funding previously budgeted for the agency’s capital program. In addition the state doesn’t have a capital plan that would spell out how much money the agency would get in the coming years.

The agency has made modernizing its rolling stock a priority because some cars are about 60 years old.

Metra officials have said they need $11.7 billion in capital funding over the next 10 years to install a federally mandated computerized system to prevent train collisions and other improvements in addition to new rail cars.

Authorities didn’t immediately say how a gun with a live round came to be used at Tuesday evening’s demonstration, noting blank rounds are typically used in such classes. The officer has been placed on administrative leave, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating.

LOS ANGELES – A serial killer known as the “Grim Sleeper” was sentenced to death Wednesday for the murders of nine women and a teenage girl

BENGHAZI, Libya – U.S.-backed Libyan forces said Wednesday they have taken over the Islamic State group’s headquarters in Sirte, the militants’ final bastion in Libya, breaking a weeks-long stalemate with the help of U.S. airstrikes.

The fighters said that they had seized control of the sprawling convention center that was used as IS’s headquarters in the coastal city. The fighters, who are mainly from the nearby city of Misrata, launched their offensive against IS in June. They also said that they had seized the city’s main hospital of Ibn Sina from IS militants.

Trump’s primary playbook leading him out of bounds The ASSOCIATED PRESS ABINGDON, Va. – In the 2016 presidential campaign, it’s long been an article of faith: The rules of political gravity don’t apply to Donald Trump.

Maybe now they do.

After winning state after state while bouncing between controversies in the GOP primaries, Trump still is stumbling on the stump. His latest unforced mishap: an off-hand remark that critics quickly slammed as a suggestion that gun-rights backers should take a literal shot at Hillary Clinton should she win the White House.

But rather than continuing to float above the criticism, Trump is losing ground in preference polls and alienating prominent Republicans by the day. Even some of his supporters worry Trump’s lack of a filter is hurting his White House chances, a concern they said has only grown in recent weeks.

“You’d think it would be pretty simple for a grown man to keep his mouth shut sometimes,” said Seth Walls, 18, a landscaper from Whitetop, Virginia, who attended his first Trump rally Wednesday. “These Twitter rants and things he does in the media, I definitely think it’s hurting him.”

With early voting set to begin next month in several states, time is running short for Trump to make a major change in his approach. As he did in the primaries, the billionaire continues to dismiss guidance from senior Republicans, in and out of his campaign. He has yet to return to running TV ads even as Clinton fills the airwaves, and leads a campaign team that remains badly understaffed.

But it’s not a surprise the latest flap springs from a Trump rally, the centerpiece of his campaign. Trump revels in the energy provided by the crowd, made up mostly of

Trump rode such events to great success in the primaries, when each of Trump’s eyebrow-raising statements – including a moment when he appeared to mock a disabled journalist and his repeated retelling of a debunked story about U.S. soldiers dipping bullets in pig’s blood – earned him a tremendous amount of attention and carried little electoral consequence.

“He tries to amp up the crowd, which he’s very good at,” said former Trump adviser Barry Bennett, who said the rallies may be large, but don’t represent the broader coalition of voters who typically decide general elections. “The problem is there’s a television audience watching at home as well.

They have a hard time understanding what he’s doing.”

Among that more diverse and moderate general electorate, polls find Trump trailing Clinton nationally and in most battleground states. The Democratic nominee’s emerging advantage comes at a key moment after both political conventions are over, when the state of a presidential race tends to stabilize and leads are difficult to surmount.

“He can’t seem to put himself in a general election mindset,” said Stephan Thompson, an aide to Republican Gov.

Scott Walker in Wisconsin, where a poll released Wednesday puts Trump 15 points behind.

After the Democratic convention, Trump sparked days of outrage across the political spectrum by repeatedly criticizing a Muslim family whose son died fighting the war in Iraq. He further alarmed Republican leaders when he declared he wasn’t ready to endorse House Speaker Paul Ryan – a stance he later reversed.

Frustrated GOP officials responded by calling financier Carl Icahn to help persuade Trump to shift his approach.

Some were pleased with the results, pointing to Trump’s economic address Monday in Detroit and the restraint he showed in the face of repeated interruptions by protesters.

The next day, however, Trump inflamed matters anew – and overshadowed a negative report about Clinton’s use of a private email account as secretary of state – by going off script at a rally in North Carolina. Trump said that if Clinton were elected president, there would be “nothing you can do” to stop her from stacking the Supreme Court with anti-gun justices.

BUSINESS The face of the nonprofit sector and a local economy If our economy is a three-legged stool, there is government, the private (or for-profit sector) and another sector that helps people in need and provides other services to the community.

The IRS calls them “not-for-profit corporations.” It has at times been called the third sector, independent sector, voluntary sector or civic sector. Most commonly it is known as the “nonprofit sector.”

The face of this important nonprofit sector often is overlooked from a business perspective. In Illinois, 11 percent of the workforce is employed in this sector, and as the third-largest U.S. industry behind retail and manufacturing, it generates more than 5 percent of national GDP. You would see about 35 percent employed in the area of human services; 17 percent in education; 13 percent in health care; 12 percent in public and social benefit organizations and associations; 10 percent in the arts and humanities; and 6 percent in religious organizations.

BUSINESS EXCHANGE Michael Trench While for-profit corporations seek a financial return or profit for owners and shareholders, the nonprofit sector does their work without owners or shareholders who might expect a profit (i.e. not-for-profit). They also differ in terms of their source of revenue.

Many nonprofits work as a vendor providing services with indirect taxpayer dollars received through the government sector. Others primarily rely on direct charitable donations, and many are a combination of both.

The mission driving a food pantry is the same as that driving a national fast food chain – feed hungry people.

While the fast food chain uses a “fee for service” model, a food pantry provides the desired service with revenue from individuals (direct by charity or indirect through taxes) and little or no charge to those in need. In

2015, more than $378 billion in direct charitable donations provided much of the revenue for the work of this sector. It came primarily from the choice of individuals, with only 5 percent coming from their for-profit counterparts as corporate donations and support. Taxpayer dollars received indirectly through government have been decreasing and erratic, challenging many nonprofits in their work.

Apart from differing profit orientation and revenue sources, both corporations provide jobs and leverage purchasing power. They employ people and provide them benefits, who in turn use their earnings to stimulate the local economy. Both may use local vendors for supplies such as furnishings, computers, office supplies, printing, marketing, photography, accounting and legal or web services.

Uniquely, many nonprofits generate revenue through special events and galas. Often held at local venues that employ local workers, they also use local vendors to design, print and mail invitations and event programs.

Most of this sector quietly works without quantifying the financial impact they put back into the community. Whether large or small, nonprofit organizations provide valuable and necessary services rather than generate a profit, and are thus a powerful force through jobs and purchasing power.

Frequenting a for-profit business is an everyday occurrence for most of us, which stimulates the economy.

Especially as the government sector steps away from stable support of nonprofits, financial donations to support a nonprofit corporation should be just as common in our life. For apart from serving those in need, they are another face of what stimulates our local economy, and are thus deserving of our investment.

Passo’s return for another season fuels optimism in USF camp

He had every right to be off starting his working life.

Mike Passo wanted more, however.

He wanted to remain at University of St. Francis and work toward his MBA. Meanwhile, his football eligibility had not been exhausted. He appeared in

only two games in 2014 because of a torn hand ligament and received a medical red-shirt for that season.

As he said after Wednesday morning’s practice at Memorial Stadium, “Why not play football?”

Everyone in the Saints’ camp is happy to have the veteran inside linebacker returning.

“It’s awesome to me that he is doing what he is doing,” USF coach Joe Curry said. “I love to see guys graduate early and come back and fulfill their football

eligibility. Kids don’t have to that. I’m thankful to him for doing it.”

“I graduated and didn’t have to come back,” Passo said. “But I love football and want to get my MBA, so why not play?”

Why not, indeed.

The 2012 Joliet Catholic graduate is entering his second season as a team captain. As much as he contributes from a physical standpoint, his knowledge of the game is something the Saints sorely would have missed had he not returned.

“We are a much different defense, a much better defense, with him in the game,” defensive coordinator Tom Sallay said.

“When he’s out of the game, you can really see it,” Curry said. “His presence in certain areas means so much. He’s in there and the quarterback might see that a route is not available to him.

Then if he’s out, boom, the quarterback hits that route.”

Meanwhile, Wilmington graduate Tanner Roark continues to be a huge contributor for the Nationals in his own right. In his most recent start last Sunday, the right-hander shut out San Francisco over seven innings and came away with a 1-0 victory over Giants ace Madison Bumgarner.

According to MLB.com, that was the seventh time this season where Roark has thrown seven or more shutout innings, which at the time was tied for the major league lead.

Roark is 12-6 with a 2.88 ERA. In 150 innings, he has allowed 130 hits and 46 walks while striking out 124.

Opponents are hitting .236 against him, and his 1.17 WHIP (walks plus hits per inning pitched) is very respectable.

Roark struck out five and allowed five hits in the victory over the Giants.

“He pitched out of trouble all day, and the Giants left nine men on base, but he made the pitches when he had to,” Nationals manager Dusty Baker told MLB.com. “He is not amazing us anymore. We’ve come to expect it.”

“The young guys come, they’re fresh and ready to go,” Passo said. “I have to do a lot more work to get ready to keep up. But I am putting in the work.”

“We’re not looking at how they’re lining up and not knowing what they’re doing. It’s a matter of knowing the play before it gets going.”

Passo is a bit light, perhaps, for his position, but that does not hinder his performance. When he was healthy in 2013, he led the Saints with 94 tackles and was a second-team All-Midstates Football Association Mideast League selection. He was second on the team with 58 stops last season despite missing three games.

“I’m about 190 pounds, the most I’ve been at,” he said of his weight. “I’d trying to get to 195. My speed makes up for my lack of size. Being elusive, get-

Passo humbly accepts the praise from his coaches and is quick to credit them and his teammates.

“I love our defensive coach [Sallay],” he said. “Every one of them we have had since I’ve been here has been awesome, but he is my man.

“And, I definitely feel that I would not be what I am if I did not trust the other guys on our defense the way I do.”

If that trust translates the way Passo feels it might, the NAIA postseason could be interesting. The Saints finished 8-3 last season, shared the MSFA Midwest League title with Saint Xavier but were denied a playoff berth. They would like nothing better than to take things further this fall.

“I thought Kelly played a pretty solid match,” said JCA coach Christine Scheibe, who coached Murphy in high school. “They didn’t need to rely on her because the middle attack was so dominant (25 kills on 38 attempts for a .632 hitting percentage), but when she got her opportunities, she put the ball away.

She also served aggressively and got some nice digs.”

“We’re definitely hungry for more,” Passo said. “Everyone here wants a national championship. I feel we have a good foundation, and our coaches do a great job.”

The process of building toward that level is off to a good start.

“In past camps, it seemed a little hard to get guys on the same side,” Passo said. “This year we seem to have come together quick.”

Having Passo in the middle of the defense is one reason for the high hopes.

“Passo is a seasoned vet here,” Curry said. “He was one of (previous coach) Mike Uremovich’s recruits.

He is so dependable, so helpful to our program. He is a two-time captain.

He’s not the most vocal guy, but he’s a leader.”

PREP FOOTBALL: LINCOLN-WAY CENTRAL

“From Day 1, I felt right in with the guys. I started lifting and guys were really helpful in getting my form down and helping with my technique. A couple of years ago, I never would have thought that I’d get to know these guys and now I feel like I’ve known them for such a long time and we’ve gotten really close.

Whenever this group is faced with a challenge, we just attack it. I can always look to my brothers to pick me up and we can push through it since we believe.”

Senior defensive tackle Michael Cepolski, who was at Central, believes the players’ efforts to get to know one another quickly have paid off.

“What definitely helped with the whole process of coming together was how everybody was really open initially,” Cepolski said. “I’m sure there were some guys who were disappointed with what was happening, but we got to know each other really quickly and I think that’s the thing that made the biggest difference. We’ve combined a little bit

of both of the cultures that we had and the guys from Mokena brought over.

What I really like about this team is that we’re not a whole lot different and also seeing the little things add up into the big things.”

Junior outside linebacker Peyton Nigro, who was at East, is pleased with how well things have come together and by how close the group has become.

“We bought into coach Cordell’s system and things started working and it’s been great,” Nigro said. “Once we started coming together in the weight room in the winter, we decided that we were going to make the best of the school closing. The bonding that we do on the football field and outside of football has brought us a lot closer together.

Our motto is ‘1-0,’ so if you do that in the classroom, on the football field or in life, you’ll be good. What I like is how close we’ve become and it’s only been eight months. It seems like it’s been eight years.”

Bullington’s busy summer includes John Deere Classic SUBMITTED REPORT FRANKFORT – Former Lincoln-Way East standout golfer Brian Bullington has had a busy summer and it is about to get busier. He received a sponsor’s exemption and will compete in the PGA Tour’s John Deere Classic beginning Thursday in Silvis.

Bullington graduated from Iowa in May 2015, where he played NCAA Division I golf and earned his business degree. Before college, he was a fouryear regular and three-time state qualifier for Lincoln-Way East coach Ryan Pohlman.

Bullington credits Pohlman’s coaching in his development as a player and a person.

“He was always very supportive,” Bullington said. “He was very good at helping me develop on the course and as a person. He did and continues to do a great job.”

After graduating from Iowa, Bullington secured a position on the PGA Tour Latinoamérica. In spring 2016, he played in seven tournaments, a number Bullington says will “jump to 10 or 11 this fall.”

“Seeing all the different countries and all the different cultures is one of the best parts,” he said. “In the spring,

I think I went to seven or eight different countries over a span of four months.

“I’m 22 years old, I’m playing a game that I really love for my job, and I get to see all of these different countries. It’s very cool to travel and see the world at my age.”

Bullington looks forward to this weekend’s John Deere Classic, and his former Lincoln-Way East coach looks forward to watching.

“He’s an all-around great kid,” Pohlman said. “He’s the kind of kid everyone would like to have as their own son. He’s worked extremely hard to be able to follow his dream.”

Not only does Pohlman think highly of Bullington, it is clear his feelings of admiration are reciprocated from his former player.

“We still have a great relationship and he still keeps in contact,” Bullington said. “He still texts me after all my good rounds and after all my bad rounds.

“We’ve moved from him being my coach; now it seems like we’re good friends. I still feel very confident going to him and seeking advice, and I love staying close to the Lincoln-Way East program. He’s had a huge impact on my life.”

Slammers rout Schaumburg again STAFF REPORTS SCHAUMBURG – A day after capturing a eight-run victory over Schaumburg at Silver Cross Field, the Joliet Slammers rolled to a similar victory Wednesday at Boomers Stadium.

Manager Jeff Isom’s squad scored three runs in the second inning and added five more in the third to help them claim a 9-1 Frontier League matinée victory in Schaumburg.

The Slammers (41-33) collected two hits apiece from Carter Bell (RBI), Jake Gronsky (RBI), Marc Flores (RBI) and Melvin Rodriguez (2 RBIs) while Sikes Orvis and Casey Fletcher

each drove in a run for Joliet, which finished with 12 hits.

Flores singled in a run while Orvis and Fletcher both had RBI sacrifice flies in the second to give the Slammers an early 3-0 advantage.

Sean Townsley collected the victory after allowing just one run on nine hits in six innings. Marc Rutledge, Donovan Feenstra and newcomer Zach Hirsch combined to allow no runs and just one hit in three innings of relief work.

NEW LENOX – Taking parts of two programs and uniting them into one usually takes time, but Lincoln-Way Central’s football team seems to prove otherwise.

Returning players at Central and new athletes from Lincoln-Way East quickly established friendships and have built a strong bond. That’s why Knights coach Jeremy Cordell is excited about the upcoming season.

“We had a real strong vision going into it,” Cordell said. “We’ve always expressed being a football family and that’s really the way that we approached it. I’m proud of our guys and our families. Buying into each other, not letting egos get in the way, accepting each other and knowing that everyone plays a role. That’s the way it’s been since January, when it started in the weight room.

And in the last eight months it’s become

something that’s pretty special.”

Senior quarterback Hunter Campbell, who was at Central, sensed that the two sides hit it off from the start and things have only grown stronger since then.

“Back in January, we all met at The Hub, which is a local gathering place,” Campbell said. “We went as two different towns and two different teams and met at a place with food and games, and was a good place to hang out and talk with people, so it was a great environment to start the process. Then we started our lifting sessions and that was even better. We knew right away that if we weren’t going to bond and become close that the season wouldn’t work out. The best thing about this team is that we all want success, so it made things so easy.”

Junior center Danny Jones, who was at East, felt that it didn’t take long for players to come together, and as a result, the team has become close.

“Coach Cordell did a nice job of getting us to all come together,” Jones said.

Kazakhstan wins 1st swim medal

By PAUL NEWBERRY The Associated Press RIO DE JANEIRO – Kazakhstan has its first Olympic swimming medal.

A gold one, at that.

Dmitriy Balandin pulled off a stunning upset in the men’s 200-meter breaststroke on Wednesday night, winning from the eighth lane to put his central Asian country on the swimming medal stand for the first time.

Yosuhiro Koseki of Japan went out fast and was more than a second under world-record pace at the final turn.

But Balandin was right with him in the outside lane, and Koseki couldn’t keep up the pace.

Balandin touched in 2 minutes, 7.46 seconds. Josh Prenot of the United States rallied to claim silver in 2:07.53, while Russia’s Anton Chupkov landed the bronze in 2:07.70.

Koseki faded to fifth.

Balandin pulled himself onto a lane rope and whipped his arms in the air, savoring his historic achievement.

“I’m very proud to win a medal for my country,” the 21-year-old said through an interpreter. “It’s the best thing I can do for my country. I think the whole of Kazakhstan is celebrating

right now.”

Until now, Balandin’s biggest achievement was winning three breaststroke gold medals at the 2014 Asian Games. He also captured gold last year in the World University Games.

But those titles pale in comparison to the one he has now.

“I don’t realize yet I’m an Olympic champion,” Balandin said. “This will come to me tomorrow.”

For now, he added, “I’m really, really tired.”

In other events on the fifth night of swimming at the Rio Games, the Campbell sisters set up a showdown in the women’s 100 freestyle.

Cate Campbell posted the fastest time in the semifinals, an Olympic-record 52.71. Her younger sister, Bronte, was fifth-fastest at 53.29. Bronte is the reigning world champion, but Cate is the world-record holder.

They’ve already teamed up to lead Australia to a gold medal in the 4x100 freestyle relay.

Now, they’re competitors seeking the same prize.

Defending Olympic champion Ranomi Kromowidjojo also advanced, along with Canada’s Penny Oleksiak, Simone Manuel of the United States and Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden.

Americans Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross have finished the Olympic group stage unbeaten, but not before losing their first set of the Summer Games.

The U.S. women beat Switzerland, 21-13, 22-24, 15-12, on Wednesday night to win their pool with a 3-0 record. They now await news on an opponent for the round-of-16, which begins Friday.

Walsh Jennings is going for her fourth straight Olympic gold medal.

American fencer Homer earns silver

Third-ranked Aron Szilagyi of Hungary beat upstart American fencer Daryl Homer to win gold in men’s sabre.

Despite the Wednesay loss, Homer earned the second silver medal for the U.S. men’s fencing team in Rio. Homer’s final touch gave him a thrilling 15-14 victory over Iran’s Mojtaba Abedini in the semifinals and put him within a win of the first gold for the U.S. men in the modern era. But Szilagyi proved to be too much for the 10th-ranked American, who fell 15-8.

Add in people who watched tennis on Bravo, women’s soccer on NBCSN and those who streamed to their devices, the total Olympic audience in prime time was 36.1 million people, the Nielsen company said. An estimated 38.7 million watched the corresponding night in London in 2012.

In a reflection of how viewing habits are changing, NBC said that by the end of Tuesday, people had already streamed more minutes of live Olympics coverage through the network’s website and app than for the entirety of the London Games. Through Tuesday, NBC said 883 million minutes of Olympic action had been streamed, compared to 818 million for all of London.

After nothing but pushovers this summer, the U.S. men’s basketball team faced someone who pushed back.

“This is the real world now, and that’s good for us,” coach Mike Krzyzewski said.

Finally tested, Carmelo Anthony and Kyrie Irving had the answers.

Anthony scored 31 points on the night he became the U.S. men’s Olympic career scoring leader, combining with Irving for all the Americans’ baskets in the fourth quarter of a 98-88 victory over Australia on Wednesday night.

Irving – born in Australia – added 19 points, including a 3-pointer with 1:35 left after Australia had closed within four.

A team that won its first two games by a combined 101 points could never get a comfortable lead – and for a while couldn’t get one at all. The Australians, with big bodies inside, quality point guards to counter the American pressure and a wealth of NBA championship experience, stood toe to toe with the team that had blown them out of the past two Olympics in the quarterfinals.

But Anthony, the first male to play in four Olympics, steadied the Americans in the first competitive game most of this new team had ever experienced.

“We kind of expected a game like this, a physical game, a grind-out game from playing against Australia over the past couple years,” Anthony said, “and going into tonight we knew it was going to come down to the end of the game where we were really going to have to buckle down and focus in and make plays down the stretch.”

Kevin Durant capped off the scoring with two free throws, making him the only player other than Irving or Anthony to score in the period.

The Americans, who had barely broken a sweat in Brazil, trailed early in the fourth quarter before Anthony hit a flurry of 3-pointers to put the Americans on top.

Patty Mills, the tournament scoring leader, had 30 points for Australia.

4 questions for the Bears in opener Roster spots up for grabs as Bears take field for first game of 2016

The Bears open the 2016 preseason Thursday night against the defending Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos. With a host of new faces on both sides of the ball, this is a key part of the evaluation process for general manager Ryan Pace, coach John Fox and the rest of the staff.

Here are four questions for the Bears to answer at Soldier Field in the preseason opener:

1. How will Kevin White and Leonard Floyd fare in their first NFL game?

The Bears’ past two first-round picks will have their first experience of an NFL game. For White, it’ll be yet another hurdle to overcome in his return from last year’s stress fracture in his left shin. He has looked the part in camp, showing off his speed and strength while becoming a top target for Jay Cutler. If fellow receivers Alshon Jeffery and Eddie Royal are sidelined, that’ll allow White to get even more opportunities. From a mental standpoint, it would be important for White to get the reps with live tackling as he continues to build confidence heading into the regular season.

Floyd has started to come on in training camp after an illness and then a shoulder injury limited him in a few practices. Fellow linebacker Pernell McPhee remains out and the Bears might not need to see a ton from Willie Young and Lamarr Houston, so Floyd can show what he can do against NFL tackles. How can he translate his speed and athleticism to the field? Can he use his length to offset his slender physique to get into the backfield? Floyd will get important snaps Thursday that can tell the coaching staff what is next in his development.

2. How will the new-look offensive line work together against an impressive

Broncos pass rush?

We’re not expecting a busy night for the first-team offense, but any game reps will be important for the group of five that has three new players – Bobby Massie, Cody Whitehair and Ted Larsen. Cohesion needs to be built, and the coaches will want to see what they have on the interior with Whitehair and Larsen. Maybe a bigger storyline, however, will be the second-team offensive line. The Bears are dangerously thin at tackle after waiving Nick Becton on Wednesday. Nate Chandler retired, and now they are hoping former Steeler Mike Adams will be healthy enough to contribute, or former Panther Garry Williams can be a reliable backup.

Neither played in 2015.

3. Will Harold Jones-Quartey keep a firm grasp on a starting safety job, or will a rookie step up?

Jones-Quartey has manned the No. 1 safety spot throughout the offseason next to Adrian Amos. His aggressive and physical play should be on display in a preseason game where he can continue his push to be the Week 1 starter. Thursday also will be the first NFL game for draft picks Deon Bush and DeAndre Houston-Carson, and they’ll want to show there is still a competition at safety. The Bears are comfortable going young here, now it’s a question of which young safety is most ready to be the starter.

4. Which reserve receivers and tight ends will make a good impression?

Injuries and shortened time for the starters will allow for the backup skill players to get plenty of reps Thursday night. The No. 2 tight end position battle is wide open. Tony Moeaki has received the most reps with the starters of late as he tries to regain his 2010-12 form. Holdovers Rob Housler, Khari Lee and Gannon Sinclair will get their chances, too. At receiver (and returner), it’ll be a lot like last preseason – and a few regular-season games. Hammel dominates as Cubs win 9th straight over Angels

By ANDREW SELIGMAN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Jason Hammel won his career-best fifth straight start, pitching four-hit ball over six scoreless innings, and the Cubs beat the Los Angeles Angels, 3-1, Wednesday night for their season-high ninth straight win.

The major league-leading Cubs matched their longest streak since Aug. 6-15 of last year and moved a season-best 30 games over .500 (71-41).

They go into a four-game set against St. Louis at Wrigley Field with three straight series sweeps after consecutive victories over the Angels.

Hammel (12-5) struck out six, walked two and helped himself at the plate when he singled and scored in the fifth against Ricky Nolasco to make it 2-0.

Addison Russell made it 3-1 with a solo homer off JC Ramirez in the eighth.

Dexter Fowler chipped in with two hits, including an RBI double. Anthony Rizzo drove in a run with a single, and the Cubs won for the 12th time in 13 games.

The Angels, last in the AL West, matched a season high with their sixth straight loss. And with their next four games at AL Central leader Cleveland,

the schedule doesn’t get much easier.

Nolasco (4-9) was a tough-luck loser, allowing two runs and six hits in six innings. The right-hander struck out six and walked one in his second start since the Angels acquired him in a trade from Minnesota on Aug. 1.

The Cubs’ Pedro Strop came on in the eighth and had to be helped off the field when he tried to make a play on Yunel Escobar’s leadoff tapper down the third-base line. Strop slid in front of third baseman Javier Baez and his left leg appeared to bend awkwardly.

Travis Wood then gave up a double to Kole Calhoun, putting runners on second and third. Albert Pujols drove in a run with a sharp grounder to second after Carl Edwards Jr. struck out Mike Trout, and Andrelton Simmons grounded out to end the rally.

Aroldis Chapman struck out the side in the ninth for his fourth save in five chances since the Cubs got him in a trade with the New York Yankees last month.

Trainers room: Cubs: Reliever Hector Rondon (triceps) remained sidelined, but manager Joe Maddon expects him to be available in a few days.

PLAINFIELD – How would you like to be a junior high school campus minister?

That was the question that Christopher Hueg said the Rev. David Medow, pastor at St. Mary Immaculate Parish in Plainfield, asked him.

And Hueg, 27, of Crest Hill, had an immediate and enthusiastic answer: Yes! It’s a new position at Christopher the school, specifically Hueg designed to use Hueg’s undergraduate degree, skills and training, he said. As a new position, it’s also a developing position and Hueg is excited at the challenges and opportunities awaiting him.

For instance, Hueg said he is in the process of developing six Catholic character attributes – with the example of Mary at their forefront – to help the students grow in holiness.

But the heart of the ministry won’t be programs, but Hueg himself, who hopes to show the students the image of a dedicated Catholic through his example.

“I think it’s extremely important, especially in today’s society, for students to see a young person strong in his faith, implementing it and living out what the Gospels are telling us or Pope Francis is saying in his weekly homilies,” Hueg said.

Hueg, who’s attended private Catholic schools his entire life, understands firsthand the meaning of his words. He graduated from De La Salle High School in Minneapolis, Minnesota, which had a strong campus ministry, as well as a campus minister – Peg Hodapp – who was strong in her faith.

He said Hodapp challenged him to make his own decisions, form his own opinions and advocate for others, instead of merely parroting the decisions and opinions of others.

Eventually, Hueg engaged in student-led social justice projects and became the backbone of many of them, Hodapp said. She could always depend on Hueg to know what to do and get it done.

Although he’s grown and matured since those days, Hodapp said Hueg is the same at his core and feels certain he will do well as a campus minister.

“He is just a vivacious, energetic, lovely person,” Hodapp said.

A campus minister is born

After high school, Hueg, ready “to see a new part of the country,” entered Lewis University in Romeoville as a math major, because he liked math problems and wanted an education career.

“So being a math teacher seemed right,” he said. “But when I started taking math classes, it was not what I expected and I wasn’t happy. I took some time to reflect and think about what I really wanted to do.”

Hueg ended up majoring in pastoral ministry and minoring in theater, another nod to Hodapp’s influence as she, too, has a theater background. In 2011, after graduation, Hueg was accepted into the Lasallian volunteer program and worked as a campus minister

at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Brooklyn, New York.

Under Hueg’s guidance, the students volunteered at an annual Christmas party for children with cancer, served every weekend at a local church’s food pantry and soup kitchen, and donated change to support a sister school in Kenya. Hueg also led retreats for the students.

In 2013, Hueg returned to Lewis University to pursue his master’s degree in English language arts secondary education. While there, Hueg worked for the university’s ministry department.

He also became involved with the theater department, which led to his new position at St. Mary’s after he directed the parish school’s musical this past spring. For Hueg, who always

envisioned ministering to high school students, this experience changed his life’s course.

He didn’t want to leave St. Mary’s.

“I loved going to the school building; the kids were so bright and vibrant,” Hueg said.

And now that he gets to stay? It’s pretty surreal, Hueg said. He also will serve as the school’s theater director.

John Garvey, principal at St. Mary Immaculate Parish School, has met with Hueg frequently over the summer and anticipates seeing the impact he will make in the students’ spiritual lives.

“He can communicate well to energize them and make them feel part of the whole,” Garvey said. “I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Besides bringing Buchar, Mitchell, Bajt Architects Inc. on board, Geotech Inc. was hired for the civil engineer-

ing work and landscaping.

The new parish center design includes an 11,600 square foot, single-story building with a full basement. The exterior of the building features brick, manufactured stone, and detailing that echoes the existing historic St. Mary’s Catholic Church. With pitched roofs and single story walls on the north, east and west sides, the new parish center design fits in well with the surrounding residential neighborhood. In addition, the facility will complement the existing church.

On the first floor, the new parish center will feature a large lobby and gathering space, multi-purpose room with a stage, five classrooms, an office, a large kitchen, a beverage center, storage, bathrooms, stairs and an elevator. On the lower level, there will be four classrooms, a large activity area, storage areas and associated mechanical and electrical spaces.

The construction is scheduled to start shortly with Narvick Brothers from Morris managing the project.

MINOOKA – Ground was broken for the new parish center for Saint Mary’s Parish in Minooka on Sunday.

Parish members and friends lined the curb to hear Rev. Tuan Van Nguyen along with Minooka Mayor Pat Brennan and Parish council president Tom Berndt, proclaim the center as a place where children of the parish will be educated in the Catholic faith and where parish activities will take place.

The new center will be directly south of the existing church on the corner of West Saint Mary’s and Massasoit Streets.

Also in attendance was Dave Clark, a lifelong parishioner and member of the building and grounds committee.

Clark said his father, James, was baptized in 1915 at the church and buried 94 years later at Saint Mary’s cemetery.

The architectural firm of Buchar, Mitchell, Bajt Inc. of Joliet said in a statement that the development of the

parish center came about after plans for a church and hall on twenty-five acres that the church owns on McEvilly Road did not materialize.

Another consideration was that parishioners did not want to vacate the existing 112-year-old church on St. Mary’s Street. The idea of having the parish hall in one location and the church on McEvilly also was not popular with parishioners.

As a result, a new plan emerged.

Nguyen also said that it was his dream to have the parish children attend catechism classes and other activities across the street instead of at a different location in Minooka; thus, the new parish center concept was deemed most appropriate near the existing St. Mary’s Church in the older part of Minooka.

To put the plan in motion, a few parishioners personally bought three homes and several garages across the street from the church on St. Mary’s Street. These structures ultimately were sold to the church and demol-

Finally, be mindful brown rice has more arsenic than white. That’s because arsenic accumulates in the “germ” that is removed from brown rice to make white rice. Cereals and other products made from brown rice are particularly likely to be high in arsenic.

Please understand I’m not saying most of us should avoid rice. I eat rice a good deal, and brown rice preferentially.

That’s because it has a better glycemic index and also tastes great.

What the FDA and the AAP are saying is infants and pregnant women should minimize rice intake. The risk to the developing brain of a child from arsenic in rice is not great. After all, billions of living babies and their pregnant mothers have had rice meals and are doing just fine. However, there are better alternatives for pregnant women and infants than rice.

Dear Dr. K: You recently wrote about the dangers of feeding rice cereal to babies. Can you tell me more about this?

What should I give my baby instead?

Dear Reader: For years, rice cereal has been a go-to food for parents when they start their babies on solid foods. My Harvard Medical School colleague Dr. Claire McCarthy, a primary care pediatrician at Boston Children’s Hospital, says it’s time to change that.

In 2012, the Consumer Products Safety Commission issued a report warning about high levels of inorganic arsenic in rice and rice products. Inorganic arsenic is a common ingredient in pesticides and other products used in farming. It can linger in the soil for a long time after it is used – and rice plants are particularly good at absorbing arsenic from the soil.

In high doses, inorganic arsenic is lethal. Even small amounts can damage the brain, nerves, blood vessels or skin – and increase the risk of birth defects and cancer. Babies who eat two servings of rice cereal a day could double their lifetime cancer risk. In addition, studies show babies exposed to inorganic arsenic, including exposure before they are born, have a higher risk of learning problems.

The FDA has decided to propose a new upper limit for inorganic arsenic in infant rice cereal of 100 parts per billion (ppb).

About six months ago, I started a new job I really enjoy. A handyman who does odd jobs around the building was working on the floor in my area. He was chatty and I made polite conversation, but now things have escalated.

This man should not be attempting to have a personal relationship with you in or out of work. There’s one family I sit for regularly. I absolutely love their two dogs and the family themselves. I stay anywhere from two nights to seven nights and work a second job on the weekdays. After walking, feeding, etc. is done, I have a ton of free time.

Similarly, when a contract can be defeated, there will sometimes be a best defense and a second-best. In today’s deal, though, the job for the defenders is to beat the contract whether declarer adopts the best line of play or the second-best.

What can happen after West leads the club king against four spades?

South might have opened two no-trump, but the lack of a heart stopper was a minus. Here, though, if he had, North would surely have raised to three no-trump, and that contract was impregnable. In four spades, though, South seems doomed to lose three hearts and one club. He has to hope the defenders slip and allow him to take five spades, three diamonds and two clubs, his ace and dummy’s jack.

Declarer’s second-best play is to win the first trick and draw trumps.

However, on the second round, East can discard a discouraging diamond two. Then, when South leads his second club toward dummy’s jack, West should find it easy to take that trick and shift to the heart 10.

Declarer does much better to lead his club six at trick two, before East has had a chance to signal. However, an experienced partnership will know the answer. At trick two, East plays his club nine, his highest club being a suit-preference signal for hearts.
