MORRIS – At the opening of the Grundy County Board meeting Tuesday night, the board voted, 11-4, to move interim chairman Chris Balkema in the Chairman position.

Board members Ann Gill, Frank Halpin, Dick Joyce and Mike Onorato voted no, and board member Kerri Courtright was absent.

Don Hansen is a Morris city alderman and Aren Hansen’s son. He said Tuesday night that he would turn in a letter of resignation the next morning to Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick.

JJC trustees differ over picking new president

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Two Joliet Junior College board trustees were at odds over how to choose the new leader for the college.

At Tuesday’s meeting, Trustee Maureen Broderick recommended moving forward in September with interim President Judy Mitchell as permanent leader of JJC. However, Trustee Alicia Morales opposed this because she wanted the position open for transparency purposes.

The trustees discussed having this conversation continue in closed session at the Aug. 30 workshop meeting.

Broderick said that since April she’s received feedback from people recommending the college have a permanent president in place.

She said there has been positive reactions to Mitchell, who has officially been interim president since April, following the abrupt resignation of Debra Daniels in March.

Broderick also noted the potential cost of a search that she learned from state and national community college trustee associations, saying it would be between $100,000 and $150,000.

“I think [Mitchell’s] done a stellar job.

And I think she knows the financial end of it; she’s handling all of the communication end of it,” Broderick said.

long term, gets along with staff, knows them and knows the work environment.

“And I think all of those things is what [Mitchell] already knows,” Broderick said. “To bring someone else in is a big training and a big learning curve and then is a style that we have to get used to.”

Morales said JJC has a lot of internal candidates that bring all of the same qualities as Mitchell. She said they are probably are looking for “upward mobility or an opportunity at least to express interest in the position.”

“So I’m more for being transparent and letting people apply,” she said.

Construction continues at Interstate 55 and Route 30, improvements that would provide better access to the northwest corner of the interchange. Local officials hope to see a new shopping center in that area someday.

Construction at I-55 and Route 30 could pave way for future development

bokon@shawmedia.com Road construction at Interstate 55 and Route 30 gives local officials some hope for a shopping center plan that was stymied by the recession.

The northwest corner of the interchange at one time was to become The Boulevard, a large retail and restaurant development to be anchored by a wholesale club store.

A Clark truck stop on the site even shut down to make room for the future development. But the shopping center was never built. And one Joliet councilman said the site has become a blight at one of the main gateways to the city.

The property also is a gateway to Plainfield. Most of the property is in the village of Plainfield.

And Plainfield officials see the potential development paired with Route 30 improvements as a possible boon to the village.

“We think it’s perhaps the best commercial location in the village of Plainfield,” said Jon Proulx, director of planning for Plainfield. “It’s a great project to move forward for both Joliet and Plainfield.”

Joliet Economic Development Director Steve Jones agrees the site has potential, which may be slowed down by the current construction. At the same time, he said the road and interchange improvements will improve access and “really creates a red carpet for that site.”

a subdivision plan for the site.

Proulx said the subdivision plan will “facilitate future development,” but there is nothing imminent happening.

“We continue to work on this project. It’s not dormant,” he said.

The village in 2007 approved an incentive plan aimed at encouraging retail development of the property.

The plan calls for 380,000 square feet of retail development, including a national retailer that would serve as an anchor with a store at least 120,000 square feet in size. In turn, the village would provide assistance in infrastructure improvements needed to develop the site.

“This is a plan for 2007,” said Jake Melrose, economic development specialist for Plainfield, noting the retail

landscape has changed since then.

But the property, owned by an entity called 55/30 Acquisition LLC, continues to be marketed.

“If someone wanted to pick up this plan and all the entitlements that come with it, we can consider it valid and move forward,” Melrose said.

The construction project started last year and is expected to be completed in summer 2017.

The project was designed to increase the capacity of Route 30 to handle traffic while also improving safety, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation website.

NO LENIENCY FOR BLAGOJEVICH Judge denies former governor’s bid to lighten 14-year sentence

CHICAGO – A federal judge on Tuesday refused to lighten Rod Blagojevich’s original 14-year prison sentence for corruption, rejecting pleas for leniency by the now-white-haired former Illinois governor who attended the resentencing hearing by video from a Colorado prison a thousand miles away.

Blagojevich, 59, was eligible for resentencing after an appeals court last year threw out several convictions related to his alleged attempt to sell or trade an appointment to President Barack Obama’s old U.S. Senate seat.

A somber, contrite Blagojevich spoke for 20 minutes in a sometimes apologetic, sometimes rambling statement before U.S. District Judge James Zagel announced the sentence, telling the court he understood he made mistakes.

“I wish I could turn back the clock and make different choices,” said Blagojevich, who didn’t use notes.

“These have been hard years.”

Zagel said that even though the appeals court threw out five of the 18 counts against the former governor, the remaining ones still justified the original sentence. The appeals court said in its ruling last year that Blagojevich wasn’t necessarily entitled to a lower sentence, adding that the 14-year term fell below what federal guidelines recommended.

As the judge announced his decision, Blagojevich could be seen on screen bowing his head. In the courtroom, his two daughters sobbed, the younger one placing her head on her mother, Patti’s, shoulder.

The one-time contestant on Donald Trump’s “Celebrity Apprentice” reality show wanted Zagel to sharply reduce his sentence to just five years, which would have meant him going free within months. Instead, with the 14-year term reaffirmed, his projected release date remains 2024, which includes two years’ credit for good behavior.

Zagel said he went through more than 100 letters from fellow prisoners.

Many portrayed Blagojevich – known as brash in his days as governor – as humble and self-effacing, as well as an insightful life coach and lecturer on everything from the Civil War to Richard Nixon.

But Zagel said they had not seen the same evidence jurors saw of Blagojev-

Defense lawyers said Blagojevich has been a model prisoner, noting in one filing how the Elvis Presley fan formed a prison band called “The Jailhouse Rockers.” The group, which had a 21-song play list, dissolved after another inmate, the lead guitarist, was released.

Zagel told Tuesday’s hearing that Blagojevich’s exemplary behavior behind bars wasn’t relevant to deciding on an appropriate punishment.

The resentencing, where attendees could see Blagojevich on several screens around the courtroom, marked Blagojevich’s first appearance in a public forum since entering prison.

Blagojevich was famously fastidious about his dark hair as governor, but it went all white because hair dyes are banned in prison. He sat in a chair during the two-hour hearing in bluegreen prison garb with a nametag with his Inmate No. 40892-424 on his shirt.

Other than his hair, the avid runner who has continued to exercise behind bars looked fit.

Subdued for much of the hearing, Blagojevich wiped tears from his eyes

when his daughters, 13-year-old Annie and 20-year-old Amy, made statements in court. Annie, an aspiring pianist, described how much her father had missed of her childhood, saying she could only play “Mary Had a Little Lamb” when she last saw him at home, but has since begun playing Beethoven.

“I don’t want to grow up, because I want to wait for him to come home,” she said.

Prosecutors urged Zagel to impose the same 14-year prison term – one of the stiffest sentences for corruption in Illinois history, arguing that would send a message to would-be corrupt politicians in a state where four of the last 10 governors have ended up in prison.

Speaking at the hearing Tuesday, Assistant U.S. Attorney Debra Bonamici countered the notion that Blagojevich is a fundamentally changed man, noting how he has expressed remorse for having made “mistakes” rather than for “committing crimes.”

“He really is the same man who appeared before you in 2011,” she said.

Bonamici conceded that seeing Blagojevich’s kids in court was “heart-

breaking,” but added, “we can’t forget the people of Illinois. They were the victims of his crimes.”

Blagojevich’s wife told reporters outside court that the resentencing was “cruel and heartless and unfair.”

“I’m dumbfounded and flabbergasted at the inability for the judge to see that things are different than they were 4½ years ago and his unwillingness to bestow even the smallest amount of leniency or mercy or kindness,” Patti Blagojevich said.

The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals last year tossed convictions tied to Blagojevich’s bid to win a White House appointment for appointing someone to Obama’s U.S. Senate seat.

It upheld his convictions on allegations that he tried to swap the Senate appointment for campaign cash, finding that trading one job appointment for another does not break the law.

After the appellate court’s finding, Blagojevich appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court to toss his remaining convictions, including one for trying to extort a children’s hospital for a campaign contribution and lying to the FBI. But the high court refused to hear the longshot appeal.

D-201 officials expect bus union strike on Day 1 Superintendent: Plans are in place in case of work stoppage

mmallory@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – The Minooka District 201 board heard during a special meeting Tuesday from bus drivers and aides displeased with the district’s compensation.

There was no action taken Tuesday by the board, which went into closed session after holding a time for public comment.

District 201 and 111 officials are in contract negotiations with employees represented by Teamsters Local 179.

The union sent notices Aug. 1 to both districts of intent to strike over negotiation disputes.

Items that union and district officials have been in dispute over since February include the implementation of fair share and maintenance of standards, as well as wages, benefits and workplace respect. With fair share, drivers who decline to join the union pay union fees.

District 201 and 111 officials have opposed fair share, saying from their standpoint they cannot “philosophically agree” to an initial contract that forces drivers who do not wish to join the union to pay dues.

Two bus workers, Keli Hollis and David Stokes, said Tuesday after the public portion of the meeting that they are “hopeful but not optimistic” they’ll be working Aug. 17 – the first day of school for District 201 for the new academic year. District 111 starts Monday.

“The last thing we want is to not be back at work,” said Stokes, a driver for four years at District 201.

Stokes told the board that wages and benefits must be competitive.

Aides, in particular, have not received a raise in seven years, he said.

Stokes said Minooka bus workers make more money per hour than counterparts in other districts. However, he said Minooka bus workers make less money per payday and less

per year.

“This happens by spreading the pay per hour over 26 pay periods,” Stokes said to the board. “And by having no paid holidays and no unemployment during spring, winter and summer breaks.”

He stated that bus workers for districts in Naperville, Crest Hill, Braidwood, Coal City and Wilmington have six paid holidays and receive unemployment. Minooka bus workers are asking for six paid holidays.

Hollis said District 201 administration and staff have received raises in recent years of between 2.9 percent and 4 percent, while bus workers – considered school staff – have not received raises.

“I ask that you see us as equal employees of the district,” Hollis said to the board.

Board President James Satorius said in a phone interview after the meeting that the board is willing to negotiate compensation, but union

leaders won’t meet with them until the board agrees to allow fair share.

“We consider that the last negotiation point, not the first,” Satorius said. “It’s not true that Illinois is a ‘closed-shop’ state. They keep saying it’s a ‘closed-shop’ state.”

Satorius said the board expects a bus workers strike starting on the first day of school, adding, “the teamsters have thrown down the gauntlet.”

Superintendent Kris Monn said in a phone interview after the meeting that the district is forming a series of plans in case of a strike, which will be sent Wednesday to parents and staff.

He said the plans are based on varying numbers of drivers showing up to work, and that several non-bus drivers employed by the district do have the appropriate licenses if drivers are needed.

“We expect drivers to report to work on behalf of the children of the community,” Monn said.

D-202 officials have contingency plan for stadium renovations

fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield District 202 officials have a contingency plan in case stadium renovations at Central and South campuses are not finished by Sept. 9 for the football game between the schools.

Construction crews have been at work over the summer renovating the stadiums at the two fields, which will get artificial turf and video displays.

Tom Hernandez, District 202 spokesman, stated in an email Tuesday that the district is hopeful the fields can be done by Sept. 9, which is the date of the football game between Central and South at Central campus.

But in case it is not done by then, Hernandez stated the district has a plan in place for the game to be held at Joliet Memorial Stadium, 3000 W. Jefferson St. in Joliet.

“That being said, we do not expect to need to play any games at the Joliet stadium beyond the 9th,” Hernandez stated.

He stated that district officials

are still comfortable with the targeted completion date of Sept. 12 for the work, although they are hoping to finish everything by Sept. 9.

The district has planned to complete in a two-phase project the installation of artificial turf at Central, South, North and East high schools.

District officials plan to have the fields at North and East replaced next summer, with targeted completion by mid-September 2017.

Photos and videos of the work at Central and South have been posted on the district’s website throughout construction. The latest photos for Central show scoreboard support work Aug. 2. At South, photos were posted for scoreboard and turf work Monday.

District officials have said the renovations will expand and strengthen the use of the fields by not only students, but also the rest of the community, such as the Plainfield Park District.

The construction work is the first significant capital project the district has done since building Plainfield East High School, which opened in 2008.

Watson is requesting from the village that 5 acres be zoned as residential and 9 acres be zoned as agricultural. The Watsons intend to have a seasonal produce farmstand on site.

Committee members all spoke in favor of the project and gave Watson credit for a well-thought-out business and restoration plan.

Watson said he doesn’t have an issue with tapping into village water and sewer through a subdivision south of the farm, other than the cost. He said he would prefer to use an upgraded tank and well system, however.

Trustees Brian Wojowski and Garrett Peck said they’d like to see the venue tied into village water and sewer, with Peck adding that he’d welcome it after a year’s revenues had been generated.

“If you need a year of revenue to afford it – I understand how money goes,” Peck said in the video. “But I’d like to see an end result of being hooked up to village water.”

Watson will continue to meet with the village’s various agencies as he seeks required approvals.

CHANNAHON – A three-vehicle crash caused a lane closure midday Tuesday on northbound Interstate 55 in Channahon.

The incident, which occurred at 12:05 p.m. between Route 6 and Interstate 80, involved a semitrailer and two cars, said Illinois State Police District 5 Sgt. Scott Angus, who said no one was injured in the crash.

The right lane was closed about 20 minutes for incident response, Angus said.

PLAINFIELD – An event venue could be coming in June 2017 to a historic farmstead in Plainfield.

The Plainfield Village Board’s Committee of the Whole on Monday heard a presentation from Kurt Watson, who, along with his wife, hope to turn the property at 12464 Heggs Road into a restored, sustainable and vibrant event venue from April through November of each year.

Watson told the committee the plan is to restore both levels of the historic two-level hay barn and use it as an event venue. Built in 1878, it’s one of the oldest, largely intact structures in Wheatland Township, he said.

The farmstead was established in 1844 and a large home was built on the property in 1990, which is where the Watson family would reside. The restored barn could comfortably fit about 175 people for events on weekends.

“Our residence is also on the property, so we’re not looking to hold events seven days a week,” Watson said on a

video of the meeting posted to YouTube by the village.

Though Watson said he has experience in restaurants and food service, the venue would not be a restaurant, bar or food service operation, nor would it have normal business hours. All events, such as weddings and family reunions, would be pre-planned.

Watson said music would only be inside the barn, with no more than an acoustic guitar player allowed outside.

Eventually, he hopes to add solar panels for power supply. Heating and cooling would run on an as-needed basis.

“On a Tuesday in the middle of summer we wouldn’t be running the air conditioning,” Watson said, noting that a key point of the business plan is sustainability.

The Watsons plan to open in June 2017 with hopes of $280,000 in total revenue in the first year and $485,000 in the second year.

The property, currently in unincorporated Will County, could be annexed to the village of Plainfield and tap into the village’s water and sewer systems.

Judge hears details in sex case

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – It was conference time Tuesday in the case of an Ottawa man accused of molesting a Crest Hill boy and then trying to have the victim and investigators killed.

Christian L. Shepherd, 37, had a status hearing scheduled before Judge Daniel Kennedy, but defense attorney Chuck Bretz and Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Christine Vukmir asked to meet with the judge for a “402 conference.”

Named for Supreme Court Rule 402, the judge learns more about “the facts and nature of the case” and the defendant at such a conference than he ordinarily would before a trial. After the lawyers present the facts, the judge discusses a potential sentence if the defendant were to plead guilty. The defendant isn’t present at the conference, but his attorney can go over it with him afterward.

“But now if you don’t like my recommendation, you can’t come back and say, ‘I want to substitute you out for a new judge’ because of that [information],” Kennedy warned Shepherd.

Shepherd agreed and waited in the jury box for 10 minutes while the conference was held in Kennedy’s cham-

bers. When the lawyers returned, the case was scheduled for another pretrial hearing later this month and Shepherd and Bretz conversed for about 10 more minutes.

Between 2004 and 2008, Shepherd allegedly sexually abused a boy he was baby-sitting in Crest Hill. The victim reported the abuse to police two years later. Shepherd, a school bus driver, also was linked to sexual abuse cases in Bolingbrook and Lockport before being arrested in April 2010.

Shepherd allegedly admitted to sexually abusing the boy to Crest Hill officers Renee Maly and Jason Opiola.

Two weeks after his arrest, he offered then-Will County Jail inmate Franklin Bryant more than $900 to kill the boy, his mother, Maly and Opiola, according to authorities.

Shepherd gave Bryant a map to [the victim’s] house and something to ‘read as you are standing over’ him,’” according to court filings. Bryant was wearing a wire and Shepherd was charged with solicitation of murder.

Two months later, Shepherd offered jail inmate Daniel Robinson his 2001 Ford Taurus and advances on his credit cards to kill the boy, his mother, the detectives and Bryant, prosecutors wrote.

He was charged with another count of solicitation of murder.

The incident occurred about 4:50 p.m. on northbound Weber Road near Root Street, just south of Caton Farm Road, Lockport Township Fire Protection District Battalion Chief John O’Connor said.

O’Connor stated in an email that a Dodge Magnum and a Chevrolet pickup collided, head-on, and a Toyota pickup then hit the Magnum from behind. Three people involved in the incident were transported to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet for treatment, O’Connor said. A fourth person was not seriously injured.

While the site may have a future, Joliet Councilman Larry Hug wants the Joliet section of the property cleaned up.

The former truck stop included a

huge interstate sign that still rises high over I-55 but as a framework only because there is nothing on the property to advertise.

Hug describes the site as “a jungle” overgrown with brush. He wants the old truck stop and sign removed.

“It just looks like an abandoned property,” Hug said. “Something must be done.”

But even Hug’s criticism of the property is based on its prime location at what he considers one [of] Joliet’s “true gateways.”

“The term ‘gateway’ is thrown around a lot,” he said. “But I-55 and Route 30, with the Louis Joliet Mall and other development, is one of the major entryways to the city, he said. “It’s a true gateway.”

MINOOKA – Members of the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force, along with deputies from the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office, arrested fugitive Brett Eugene Warriner Aug. 5 in Minooka.

Warriner, 52, was arrested in the 2000 block of Wildy Road, according to a news release sent Monday by the Sheriff’s Office.

Warriner was wanted out of Arapahoe County in Colorado for escape as he failed to report to corrections authorities to fulfill his sentence related to criminal charges he received in Colorado, according to the news release. Warriner also was wanted out of Douglas County in Colorado for contempt of court. Warriner had been wanted and a fugitive hiding in Kendall County since June 9, authorities saod.

How would you treat an ankle sprain?

Foot and ankle injuries happen to all of us from time to time. Although it is sometimes hard to tell how serious an injury is at first, here is an easy guide to use until you can reach a doctor.

R.I.C.E. stands for rest, ice, compression and elevation. First, the body must be allowed to recuperate, and that calls for rest. Second, forget the heating pad, at least at first. Ice applied immediately after an injury and for several days following constricts blood vessels, reducing swelling and pain. Third, compression with a bandage also reduces swelling, as well as immobilizing the area. Finally, elevating the foot above the heart prevents blood from pooling around the injury. R.I.C.E. is first aid only, not a replacement.

OBITUARIES JAMES A. AMBROSE Born: Nov. 24, 1966 Died: Aug. 8, 2016

James A. Ambrose “Jim,” age 49, of Channahon, died suddenly Monday, Aug. 8, 2016. He was born Nov. 24, 1966, to Mary Anne (nee Hanrahan) and George Ambrose in Oak Lawn.

He was raised and educated in Midlothian, attending St. Christopher Grade School then Marist High School, graduating with the class of 1984. He also attended Purdue Calumet College.

Beloved son of Mary Anne and George; loving brother of Kathie (Jeff) Purvis and Kristin Ambrose; proud uncle of Jessie, Kayla, Jake and Josie. Several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive. He will also be missed by his special friend, Kathy McGee. Jim was employed in the refinery industry for many years. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing and playing bags. He was a huge Blackhawks, White Sox and Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He possessed a kind spirit and will be remembered fondly for his huge heart and extreme generosity.

Funeral services for Jim Ambrose will be held at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Road (at Essington Road) in Joliet, where visitation will take place Friday, Aug. 12, 2016, from 3 to 9 p.m. Prayers, Saturday 9 a.m. at the funeral home to Holy Family Catholic Church in Shorewood, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Interment will be private at Good Shepherd Cemetery, Orland Park, at a later date.

H. RITA BELTZHOOVER Born: Dec. 9, 1933 Died: Aug. 8, 2016

H. Rita Beltzhoover (nee Ruscin), age 82, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, Aug. 8, 2016, with her loving family at her side, following a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s.

Rita was born to Czechoslovakian immigrants, Mike and Mary Ruscin, on Dec. 9, 1933, in West Frankfort. She was the youngest of five children. She married Edward Beltzhoover on Aug. 28, 1954, and together they raised seven children with 14 grandchildren.

Rita was loved and adored by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. She was a devout Catholic who raised her family to embrace the same, strong faith she implemented in her daily life. In addition to raising her own children, she became a day care provider who lovingly

and patiently cared for many children in her Joliet home for over 30 years. Rita was also a dedicated volunteer at St. Raymond’s, JCHS and SFA. In 1994, at 61 years of age, Rita earned her associate degree in child development.

She enjoyed family vacations to Cocoa Beach, Florida, as well as RV trips to Alaska with her husband and friends. Above all else, Rita cherished the time she spent with her children and grandchildren.

Survived by her seven children, Dirk, Marianne, Eric (Laurie), Carolyn (David) Johanson, Christine, Alex (Janet) and Gretchen (Rolf) Troha; her 14 grandchildren, Jon Beltzhoover, Ryan and Rachel Beltzhoover, Chris, Matt, Tim and Sara Johanson, Samantha Greben, Conner Klinger, Elizabeth Beltzhoover, Madeline, Luke, Erik and Ingrid Troha; and her siblings, Margaret McDonald, John Ruscin, Alice Johnston and Mary Ruscin.

Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edward (2010); and her parents.

We are blessed and eternally grateful for the love and compassion provided by her dedicated caregivers, Vicky, Yola and Lidia.

Funeral services for Rita Beltzhoover will be held Friday, Aug. 12, 2016, at 9:15 a.m. from the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington roads, Joliet, to the Cathedral of St. Raymond for Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10 a.m. As it was Rita’s wish, cremation rites will be accorded following the funeral Mass. FRANCIS JONES Francis “Bud” Jones, 77, late of Elwood, died Aug. 7, 2016, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home after a long illness.

Born and raised in Joliet, he attended St. Patrick’s Grade School, Washington Junior High and Joliet Catholic High School. A member of Teamster Local 179, Bud worked for Alexander Lumber Company for 43 years until his retirement in 1999. Bud served his community as a proud member of the Elwood Village Board from 2007 until his death. He was also a former Jackson Township trustee and the former president of the Wyndstone Village Homeowners Association.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy (Olsen) in 2013; his parents, Francis and Mary (Breen); his sister, Kathleen Jones; and numerous aunts and uncles, especially his uncle, John (Lauretta) Breen to whom he was devoted.

Bud is survived by his dear children, William (Annette) Jones of Yorkville and Judge Sarah Jones of Channahon; his sister, Mary Virginia (Raymond) Sicinski of Shorewood; his brother, Raymond (Marilyn) Jones of Naperville; his

nieces, Laura Ballard of Danville, CA, and Stephanie (Jeff) Kastelic of Naperville; and nephews, Michael (Christine) Sicinski of Plainfield and David (Nicole) Jones and Daniel (Kelly) Jones, both of Naperville; his great-nieces and nephews Abby and Jonathan Sicinski, Ben, Annie, Sam and Maggie Ballard, Jake, Julia and Will Kastelic, and Benjamin, Samantha, Anna and Owen Jones; and numerous cousins. His dear lifelong friend Norma Baudino also survives, as well as dedicated friends and neighbors Peg, Dick, Joan, Ron and Bob. After retirement, Bud enjoyed traveling to Ireland, Italy and Alaska with Nancy. He was a devoted Chicago Bears and NASCAR fan, and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Joliet.

The family wishes to especially recognize the care of Drs. Michael Waszak and Chris Kolyvas.

Margaret Mary Ritter, age 55, died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2016, after a brief illness. Margaret was born in Joliet, on Oct. 7, 1960, the daughter of George and Lorraine Ritter.

Margaret was born with Down syndrome but faced life’s challenges with dignity and humor. She was a graduate of Joliet East High School and participated in the Special Olympics and in Joliet Park District sports programs. Upon her mother’s death, Margaret lived with the Trinity Services program and then moved into the Shapiro Developmental Center in Kankakee in 1993. She made many friends and was employed at the Kankakee County Training Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Dr. Mary Ritter, Ph.D. Margaret is survived by her siblings, Dr. Dorothy Ritter M.D., Ph.D. of Madison, WI, Barbara (Richard) McHugh of Alpharetta, GA, Rita (the late Alphons) Bonde of Lake Zurich, Dr. Therese (William) Weiser D.V.M. of Meridian, Idaho, and Lawrence (Lisa Evans) Ritter of Gold Canyon, AZ. The News-Gazette via The Associated Press CHAMPAIGN – Robin Counce, who carried a grenade launcher in Vietnam, nearly was killed by “friendly fire” and still sees a therapist to talk about his PTSD. Counce, 68, grew up in Danville a minister’s son. He still leans on his faith and his moral compass – “I believe in right” – in dealing with his dangerous service during the seven months he spent in that country.

Among the medals he received, almost one for every month, were the Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, Army Commendation Medal and First Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Medal.

Counce had been drafted. He served in the Army from 1968 to 1970.

After training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and Fort Lewis, Washington, he got orders to report to Vietnam via Fort Ord, California.

Counce was assigned a grenade launcher, which he said was about the size of a sawed-off shotgun.

He joined a unit that targeted Viet Cong guerrillas using guerrilla tactics of their own.

“We were supposed to search for them, find them and kill them,” he recalled.

10-year-old Chicago boy shot in back, in critical condition

CHICAGO – The mother of a 10-year-old boy who was shot in Chicago said he is in critical condition after undergoing surgery.

Mellanie Washington said her son, Tavon Tanner, started yelling, “I can’t breathe” and vomited blood after being shot in the back about 10:15 p.m.

Monday. He was sitting on the porch of his family’s West Side home. Washington said the bullet damaged her son’s pancreas, intestines, kidneys and spleen, which was removed.

“We were on a battalion operation in Thanh Phu province,” Counce said.

Illinois dedicates monument to Purple Heart recipients

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois has established a monument in Springfield to honor those who were wounded in combat.

The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency said it has dedicated the monument, at the Springfield cemetery where Abraham Lincoln is buried, to Purple Heart medal recipients.

“The Cobra helicopters were firing (hundreds of) rounds a minute, and it sounded like a giant meat grinder. I could see the tracers and bullets hitting all around us, knocking dirt and water into the air. I heard God, I heard Jesus, and I heard the Lord all in harmony,” he said.

To prevent the men from being fired on, Hackworth told Counce’s company commander to put a strobe light on his helmet so he could see exactly where they were.

Hackworth then held his own helicopter directly above Counce’s company so the Cobras would break off. And they did, although the Viet Cong still fired at the helicopter.

Somewhere near that time, Counce said, he killed a man (for the first time he knew of) when he blew up a flat-bottomed sampan on the river, with two enemy soldiers and their AK-47s.

“I sent them to Hanoi Heaven,” he said.

He also helped save another soldier by lobbing grenades in the enemy’s tree line.

After the war, Counce returned to Danville, where he first worked in a bookstore.

Friends helped him a get a job at the GM foundry in Tilton, where he spent 25 years. He spent another dozen working for Wal-Mart.

Counce moved to Champaign when he got married to Shirley, whom he called his rock. He has a daughter in Danville named Robin.

Long after the war, a friend asked Counce whether he got angry easily, and whether he had nightmares. That’s when he began to seek therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder at the VA Illiana Health Care System in Danville.

It’s helped, he said, though he hasn’t stopped treatment.

Michigan City teen drowns in Lake Michigan

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. – Indiana conservation police said a 14-year-old northwest Indiana teenager has drowned in Lake Michigan.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources said late Monday that Travis Mensha of Michigan City died about 7 p.m. Monday at a Michigan City hospital. Officials said Travis disappeared about 175 feet from shore at Washington Park in Michigan City a little after 6 p.m.

Divers started searching for Travis shortly afterward, and his body was recovered.

Officials said another teen was with Travis at the time.

That teen was able to rescue himself at a nearby breakwall.

If Trump can’t get along with GOP, how could he govern?

WASHINGTON – Beyond the immediate fallout from his rocky relationship with party elders, there’s a longer-term reality for Donald Trump: Should he win the presidency, he would have to work closely with the same GOP leaders he has vilified on the campaign trail.

He has taken modest steps in recent days to ease tensions, yet a growing chorus of experienced Republicans is warning that the billionaire businessman’s brash and divisive approach will make it difficult for him to govern effectively.

“He hasn’t been able to get along with his own party as the nominee. How is he going to get along with them when he has to govern?” asked Rick Tyler, a former aide to Ted Cruz’s presidential bid. “If Trump can’t get along with the sitting speaker, and has poor relationships with sitting members of the Legislature, the idea of fashioning a conservative legislative agenda seems to me virtually nonexistent.”

Tyler may not be an impartial observer.

But it seems clear that Trump’s turbulent relationships with Republican leaders could take on greater significance after Election Day. A President Trump may need Cruz – or “Lyin’ Ted,” as Trump calls him – to help confirm his Supreme Court picks. He may need Florida Sen. Marco Rubio – or “Little Marco” – to help implement his immigration priorities.

And President Trump’s broader governing agenda surely would require the cooperation of House Speaker Paul Ryan, whom Trump thrust into a political firestorm a week ago by refusing to endorse him.

Trump ended that feud by endorsing Ryan late Friday – along with Arizona Sen. John McCain and New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte – after four days of manufactured chaos, but the episode left bad blood.

A steady stream of defections has continued, with longtime Republican officials and policy experts vowing not to vote for the GOP nominee. They include Maine Sen. Susan Collins, a four-term Republican senator, who announced Monday that she could not support Trump and “his constant stream of cruel comments.”

“Donald Trump does not reflect historical Republican values nor the inclusive approach to governing that is critical to healing the divisions in our country,” Collins wrote in The Washington Post.

She is not alone.

Several Republican senators, including Ben Sasse of Nebraska and Mark Kirk of Illinois, have said they won’t vote for Trump.

Others, such as Jeff Flake of Arizona and Mike Lee of Utah, have refused to endorse him so far.

Trump’s team said it’s not for lack of effort by the candidate.

One early backer, Rep. Chris Collins, R-N.Y., notes that Trump has made multiple trips to Capitol Hill to talk to his critics. He said there’s only a handful of holdouts.

“Once Mr. Trump is the president of the United States and shows that willingness to reach out, and not be dictatorial, but rather collaborative, I think they may just disappear automatically,” Collins said of the Republican critics. “I think it’s going to be a very collaborative effort.”

Yet Trump has shown little ability to moderate his approach for any significant period of time.

After pummeling Cruz with personal insults during the primary season, Trump resurrected a conspiracy theory linking Cruz’s father to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy the day after the Republican National Convention.

A demonstrated expert in parliamentary obstruction tactics, the Texas senator sits on the powerful Judiciary Committee, which has the power to endorse or reject Supreme Court nominees before they are reviewed by the full Senate. The next president may well need to fill more than one court vacancy.

Beyond Cruz, the committee features several other GOP critics: Lee, Flake and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham.

“Donald Trump shows no sign of being able to reach out to people who have been his adversaries,” said Vin Weber, a former Minnesota Republican congressman who is refusing to vote for Trump.

It’s unclear to what extent a frustrated Trump might turn to executive actions should Congress reject his wishes.

Is Illinois the next state to deal with “voter suppression?” Maybe, depending how you look at it.

You may know that a conservative group filed a federal lawsuit last week to stop Illinois’ election-day voter registration law from being carried out this November. The group’s top expert in the case is probably best known for his vigorous defense of Wisconsin’s controversial voter ID law, which was declared unconstitutional by a federal judge last month. Requiring voters to produce identification at the polls has often been ruled as an unconstitutional suppression tactic in numerous recent cases.

M.V. Hood III, a political science professor at the University of Georgia, is consulting on the new case for the Illinois Policy Institute’s legal arm, the Liberty Justice Center. The lawsuit argues that since Illinois only requires in-precinct voter registration on election day in counties with populations over 100,000, it should be struck down for violating the constitutional equal protection rights of people in the other counties. Under state law, counties under 100,000 population must have a same-day voter registration process, but they are allowed to have only one central registration/voting location.

Same-day registration proved crucial on election day two years ago in a super-tight Illinois House race, when

VIEWS Rich Miller state Rep. Kate Cloonen, D-Kankakee, barely defeated Republican Glenn Nixon by a mere 122 votes. Cloonen is near the very top of Gov. Bruce Rauner’s political hit list this year.

Not all, but most of the legislative Democrats targeted for defeat this year are in counties of over 100,000 people where same-day in-precinct registration is mandatory. Same-day registration certainly gives them an advantage in those counties because Democrats generally have a much better “ground game” than the Republicans. They have far more foot soldiers and a system to get people to the polls at the last minute.

But if the entire same-day registration law is enjoined for this cycle, as Hood and the Illinois Policy Institute want, the ruling would undoubtedly have a negative impact on Democrats in every single contested House and Senate race in the state.

Rauner has supported same-day registration in the past, but he has contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Illinois Policy Institute, although everybody denies any current direct involvement. Even so, the institute’s

director, John Tillman, maintains very close ties to Rauner, and is said by GOP insiders to be assisting Rauner with his messaging and was videoed walking out of a recent Chicago term limits press conference with the governor.

Hood was a witness for Wisconsin this year as the Republican-controlled state attempted to fend off an attempt to declare its voter ID law unconstitutional. He claimed he knew of no reason why the state’s requirements to provide proof of identification in order to vote “will have a detrimental impact on the ability of Wisconsin voters to cast a ballot, including minority voters,” according to a May 26 Wisconsin State Journal article.

But on July 29, US District Judge James Peterson declared, “To put it bluntly, Wisconsin’s strict version of voter ID law is a cure worse than the disease” and ordered the state to supply voters with ID cards within 30 days. Earlier this year, the former chief of staff to a Wisconsin GOP state senator alleged that Republican senators were “giddy” during a private caucus meeting “and literally singled out the prospects of suppressing minority and college voters” with a voter ID law.

Hood has also defended Georgia’s voter ID requirements, saying that while it did suppress turnout, he could find “no empirical evidence to suggest that there is a racial or ethnic compo-

nent to this suppression effect.”

The new Illinois lawsuit points out that the same-day law was passed with only Democratic votes and was signed by a Democratic governor. “Not coincidentally,” the group wrote in a news release, “high-population counties in Illinois tend to favor Democratic candidates; low-population counties in Illinois tend to favor Republican candidates.”

But state Rep. Christian Mitchell, D-Chicago, took to Twitter to repeatedly denounce the Illinois Policy Institute’s lawsuit as an attempt at “voter suppression,” similar to what happened in Wisconsin. Mitchell, an African-American legislator who strongly supported the same-day bill, claimed that, after “defending Rauner ‘budgets,’” the conservative think tank is “now doing his dirty work of voter suppression.” The group responded by repeating its legal claim that the law violates the U.S. Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause.

This is, without a doubt, the single most fascinating year for Illinois politics in my lifetime. And it’s only gonna get weirder as every single trick in the book is played – and maybe some that aren’t even in the book.

To the Editor: The Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living is thrilled that Gov. Bruce Rauner has suspended his cruel overtime policy within the Illinois Home Services Program.

Illinois Department of Human Services Secretary James Dimas claims the policy saved $5 million. If so, it was a disinvestment in our economy that came at the cost of people with disabilities losing service, personal assistants not getting paid for their work, and personal assistants being forced to abandon their consumers because of the threat of termination.

A true benefit to taxpayers will come not from cuts, but from an investment

in the program. The program allows 30,000 people to live in their own homes instead of institutions, which costs at least $10,000 more per person every year.

I urge Governor Rauner to partner with people with the community to create a new overtime plan. Working together, we can create a plan that supports the independence of consumers enrolled in the program and that fairly compensates workers for the services they provide.

To the Editor: I’m sure that the beloved “street preacher” that we often see featured in

this paper is as wonderful a person as everyone says, admittedly, a far better man than I, without a doubt. He proves that even folks lacking resources can live with dignity.

However, I can’t help but wonder whether he wouldn’t be a more empowering role model if he demonstrated, by example, that it’s possible to shed one’s homeless status. That’s intended only as a personal opinion, not a criticism. The gentleman has every right to follow his heart and answer his own calling.

What really made me stand up and cheer, though, was the recent article about Kenny Zagoda who just celebrated 30 years working at McDonald’s.

Down syndrome could not keep Kenny “down” or prevent him from enjoying a full, productive life and earning a

paycheck. I’ve seen Kenny in action. He’s amazing. Talk about inspiring. Wow! As a young child in the 1950s, I was raised in a household with a Down syndrome aunt. Individuals like her were kept hidden from view, not out of shame but to protect them from the cruel remarks and hateful stares of potentially ignorant strangers. No one outside our family knew she existed. It was truly the dark ages. The “compassionate, respectful” medical term for her condition back then was “mongoloid idiot.” Seriously!

What would she have been called if someone meant to insult her?

You best believe I applaud Kenny Zagoda! Go for 40, Kenny.

Slammers overcome early deficit, roll past Schaumburg

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Slammers hoped to get things started in a good fashion as they began the final stretch of their season on Tuesday in a Frontier League game with Schaumburg.

With 23 games left on the schedule and 20 of those being against East Division squads, the Slammers control their own destiny, as they are the lone team in the division that’s over .500 and own a five game lead over Washington for first place.

Things got underway in an interesting way with Joliet hosting the Boomers for one game before the squads continue the series over the

next two days in the northwest suburbs.

And while things started off slowly for the Slammers and they fell behind early, they soon took control and broke things open to capture a 10-2 victory at Silver Cross Field.

Schaumburg (33-41) grabbed the first lead when it scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning on a tworun home run by Mike McClellan (2 for 3) off starter Spencer Medick (7-3), who collected the victory after allowing two runs on five innings in seven innings.

But the Slammers (40-33) responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame when Zarley Zalewski (3 for 4, two RBI) doubled on a ball that

the right fielder just missed catching and Sikes Orvis followed with a single.

Carter Bell (3 for 5) just missed hitting a homer to left and instead settled for a double before Jake Gronsky (three RBI) tied things up when he grounded into an infield out.

Joliet moved in front for good in the fifth when Melvin Rodriguez (2 for 4) and Alfredo Rodriguez singled and later scored on a two-out double

by Zalewski to make it a 4-2 game.

The Slammers broke things open by scoring five more times in the sixth to grab a 9-2 advantage. Bell led off with a single before Gronsky smacked a two-run run shot to left.

Marc Flores (2 for 4) followed with

a single and moved to second on an error, Melvin Rodriguez got an RBI single, Alfredo Rodriguez reached on an error and Charlie White (2 for 5) drove in a run with an infield out.

Scott Schultz (4-4) finally exited after going only 51/3 innings. He allowed nine runs on 12 hits during that span, with the last run coming in on a wild pitch.

Joliet, which finished with 15 hits, added a run in the eighth when White and Zalewski singled and then both runners advanced after a pair of wild pitches.

Brent Choban allowed one hit in an inning of relief, while newcomer Confesor Lara pitched the ninth inning for the Slammers.

The USA trailed the Netherlands, 2-1, after three sets Monday before rallying to win the last two to move to 2-0 in the competition. Murphy came up huge when it mattered most.

In the fourth set, she had back-toback kills for an 8-7 lead, then a crosscourt winner to extend the USA’s lead to 11-8. After the Netherlands fought back into an 18-17 lead, she scored off a kill and a block to get the USA back on top, 21-18. Then she added a kill and an ace to make it 24-20, and the USA ended it on a Netherlands error.

Murphy got her team going in the tiebreaker with a point off a block. She had kills that gave the Americans leads at 7-3, 12-5 and finally match point. She finished the match with a team-high 18 points on 15 kills in 31 attempts and three blocks.

So Murphy not only is a member of the U.S. Olympic women’s volleyball team, the former University of Florida All-American, whose hometown is Wilmington, is proving to be among its best players on the biggest stage of all.

Yet she goes about her business with humility.

As University of St. Francis women’s basketball coach Samantha Quigley

said of her former high school teammate: “Kelly walks in a gym and it’s that attention she draws. Her demeanor is low key. She is very humble. She is almost a quiet assassin. She reminds me a lot of Allie in that regard.”

Allie is Quigley’s older sister. Both Quigleys are former basketball, volleyball and softball standouts at JCA.

Allie Quigley is the two-time defending WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year with the Chicago Sky. Kelly Murphy drawing a comparison to Allie Quigley – that’s quite a compliment to both.

Monday marked the opening of fall high school football practice around the state.

A late-afternoon stop at the Joliet Catholic Academy practice field was part of my afternoon itinerary.

Coach Dan Sharp and I naturally talked football, but he also brought up something else for discussion – JCA graduate Kelly Murphy in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

“We have Kelly Murphy in the Olympics, how great is that?” He said. “I don’t believe our school ever had a gold medalist in the Olympics. She could be the first.

“But she not only is a great volleyball player. What you noticed when she was in school here is she is such a nice girl.”

JCA girls volleyball coach Christine Scheibe, who has built and maintained a state-caliber program, often has expressed her admiration for the 6-foot-2 Murphy’s all-around game, and for Murphy as a person.

At this point, Murphy’s objective is to be the best teammate she can be and help the USA claim its first Olympic gold medal in women’s volleyball.

The U.S. earned silver in 2008 and 2012, losing to Brazil both times in the gold-medal match. The Americans also won Olympic silver in 1984 and bronze in 1992.

The only gold medal for the USA in the three major volleyball tournaments (Olympics, FIVB World Championships and FIVB World Cup) came via a 3-1 victory over China at the 2014 FIVB World Championships in Italy. Murphy was a member of that team.

In the six-team Pool B at the Olympics, the USA women have beaten Puerto Rico, 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-17), and the Netherlands, 3-2 (18-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-20,15-8). Next up is Wednesday’s 1 p.m. match against Serbia, followed

by Friday’s 1 p.m. battle with Italy and Sunday’s 3:05 p.m. match against China.

The quarterfinals are next Tuesday, the semifinals Thursday, Aug. 18 and the gold- and bronze-medal matches Saturday, Aug. 20.

If you have not had the opportunity to watch the USA in action, the time is right to correct that situation. Olympic women’s volleyball is an attraction in itself, but when our area has a player of Murphy’s caliber involved, it is so much more thrilling.

In the USA’s victory last Saturday over Puerto Rico, the left-handed hitting Murphy, who plays opposite, totaled 13 kills in 19 attempts for a remarkable .684

Bryant, Lackey lead Cubs over Angels

CHICAGO – Kris Bryant hit his 28th home run, John Lackey outpitched friend and former teammate Jered Weaver, and the Cubs beat the Los Angeles Angels, 5-1, Tuesday night for their eighth straight victory.

Willson Contreras also homered and Ben Zobrist added an RBI double for the major league-leading Cubs, who won their 70th game and moved a season-high 29 over .500.

Kole Calhoun homered on Lackey’s third pitch, but the former Angels right-hander later retired 12 straight. Lackey (9-7) allowed three hits over eight innings, and all six of his strikeouts were looking.

Weaver (8-9) gave up four earned runs and another one that was unearned when he dropped a throw to first base for an error during the Angels’ fifth straight loss.

Bryant homered over the left-field bleachers in the fifth.

The matchup of veteran right-handers was as one-sided as their teams’ seasons as the Cubs opened a 10-game homestand.

The 37-year-old Lackey and 33-year-old Weaver were teammates a decade ago with the Angels.

They had split their previous two meetings when Lackey pitched for Boston.

Calhoun struck first, sending Lackey’s third pitch into the left-field bleachers for his first ho-

mer since June 25. Contreras tied it with a shot to left-center in the third.

Weaver had the Cubs off balance early with his 83 mph fastball and 70 mph curve. But the Cubs started to pounce the second time through the order, with Anthony Rizzo doubling in a two-run fourth and again in a two-run fifth.

The second hit came after Bryant sent Weaver’s slider onto Waveland Avenue, and the Cubs improved to 17-6 since the All-Star break.

Weaver allowed eight hits in five innings as Los Angeles lost for the 11th time in 17 games.

Pedro Strop pitched a perfect ninth to complete the Cubs three-hitter.

Trainer’s room: Cubs: Jorge Soler started in left field for the first time since June 6 following a hamstring injury and three games as the DH last weekend. He went 2 for 4.

Call reversed: The Cubs’ Dexter Fowler was ruled out after 3B Yunel Escobar had a foul pop knocked out of his glove by a fan in the fifth. Umpires initially ruled it no play before huddling and changing the call without a replay review.

Heyward’s catch: Cubs OF Jason Heyward made a headfirst, snow-cone grab of pinch-hitter Johnny Giavotella’s fly to shallow right in the eighth.

Up next: The series concludes Wednesday night with Cubs RHP Jason Hammel (11-5, 3.07 ERA) returning from the bereavement list to face righthander and former Cubs draft pick Ricky Nolasco (4-8, 5.23).

Frazier homers in 10th, White Sox beat Royals The ASSOCIATED PRESS KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Todd Frazier hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning and Justin Morneau had four hits to lift the White Sox over the Kansas City Royals 7-5 on Tuesday night.

Frazier is tied for the major league lead with 31 homers, and his latest came on the first pitch from Kelvin Herrera (14) after a single by Jose Abreu and a double by Morneau.

David Robertson (3-2) blew a save in the ninth when Alcides Escobar’s two-out single scored pinch-runner Jarrod Dyson.

Dan Jennings struck out Eric Hosmer to end the game, logging his first career save.

Sox All-Star left-hander Chris Sale is 0-3 in five starts since a July 2 victory over Houston. He gave up three runs and seven hits in the first 21/3 innings but did not allow a hit after that. He threw 115 pitches in seven innings, striking out seven and walking one.

Practice in Bourbonnais ends with first preseason game on Thursday

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com BOURBONNAIS – The Bears held their final open practice of training camp Tuesday at Olivet Nazarene University while they get set for Thursday’s preseason opener at Soldier Field against the Broncos.

“It’s all about that ‘exam.’ Those exams are those preseason games and I can’t think of a better test than the defending world champs Thursday night,” coach John Fox said.

Fox expects the starters to play the first quarter, the backups in the second quarter, and then the third stringers in the second half. The reps will increase for the top units the next two game before starters likely sit in the preseason finale.

Two players will be under the spotlight for their first game in a Bears uniform – Kevin White and Leonard Floyd. Without live tackling in minicamp or training camp – aside from Saturday’s practice at Soldier Field – the preseason allows for a better sense of how players react to being hit, and tackling the opponent.

That microscope also will be on Alshon Jeffery, who caught passes during drills Tuesday but was still limited with his hamstring injury. Jay Cutler said it’s important for Jeffery to get those live reps, and Fox echoed

the importance for all player to get the preseason experience.

“Every player’s different and you’re trying to get ready for the ultimate test and that’s Houston [in Week 1],” Fox said. “But those practice games, getting used to finishing, because we don’t finish on each other here at practice, so I think that little edge it takes to play live football against an opponent, everybody needs some of it as long as the body can do it.”

Jeffery told reporters that no decision has been made yet as to his availability for the game, but he agrees it’d be worthwhile to get some work in.

“It’s always good to get on the same page in the preseason, so it can carry over to the regular season,” he said.

Injury report: Nick Becton (shoulder) was the only addition to the injury report. Eddie Royal, Zach Miller, Nick Kwiatkoski, Greg Scruggs, Ben Braunecker, Roy Robertson-Harris and Derek Keaton remained on the sideline.

Quick hits: The team worked on special situations, such as being backed up against its own end zone. Brian Hoyer found Deonte Thompson for a long gain out of play-action in that scenario … In red-zone work, Kevin White showed off his speed reversing field on a short pass, and Marc Mariani caught a touchdown from Jay Cutler … The play that drew the biggest crowd reaction was a long pass from Connor Shaw to Kieren Duncan that was called back due to a penalty. …

Mark Sanchez and former Northwestern QB Trevor Siemian will each play a quarter of the first half for the Broncos on Thursday night.

Phelps wins 21st gold medal Ledecky wins her 2nd gold medal in Rio

RIO DE JANEIRO – This is the one Michael Phelps really wanted, and it showed.

With challengers all around, he simply wouldn’t be denied.

After touching the wall first – barely – he held up one finger.

Then he sat on a lane rope, egging on the roaring crowd at the Olympic Aquatics Center with both hands, be- Katie Ledecky fore emphatically pumping his fist in the direction of his fiancée and their infant son.

Once again, the gold medal in the 200-meter butterfly belongs to Phelps.

The United States won the 4x200-meter freestyle relay later, giving Phelps his 21st Olympic gold medal.

Being the 21th gold of his career only added to the satisfaction.

Making up for one of the few losses in his staggering career, Phelps held off Japan’s Masato Sakai by a mere four-hun-

dredths of a second. The winning time was 1 minute, 53.36 seconds, but that was of little concern. The only thing that mattered was getting to the wall first.

Four years ago, Phelps mistimed his finish in the swooping stroke he does better than anyone, gliding to the wall a little too long after his final stroke.

That allowed Chad le Clos of South Africa to stunningly win gold in an event that Phelps had dominated for the better part of a decade.

In what was shaping up to be another very good night for the Americans, Katie Ledecky took the most challenging step toward a feat that’s only been done one other time.

Ledecky held off Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom to win the 200 freestyle and give the American star her second gold of the Rio Games.

Debbie Meyer is the only female swimmer to capture the three longest freestyle events at a single Olympics, winning the 200, 400 and 800 at Mexico City in 1968. Ledecky looks like a lock to match Meyer, having already won the 200 and 400 titles and an overwhelming favorite in the 800.

Karolyi’s ‘Final Five’ U.S. team wins gymnastics gold

Dominant. Peerless. Golden.

The U.S. women’s gymnastics team gave retiring national team coordinator Martha Karolyi a fitting send-off in the Olympic finals on Tuesday night, putting on a two-hour display of precision and class. Their score of 184.897 was more than eight points clear of silver medalist Russia, a blowout that Michael Jordan’s “Dream Team” should envy.

The Americans’ second straight Olympic team triumph – and third overall – was never in doubt. From the second Laurie Hernandez drilled her opening vault to Simone Biles’ boundary-pushing floor exercise to end it, the U.S. put on an exhibition that showed how far the divide between themselves and everyone else has become.

It’s a gap that Karolyi created from scratch since taking over for husband Bela in 2001. She’s molded the U.S. program into a ponytailed juggernaut.

The 73-year-old is stepping down after the games. Watching from the front row of the Rio Olympic Arena in a red

jumpsuit, Karolyi watched perhaps her greatest team seem totally immune to the pressure.

Maybe that’s because for Hernandez, Biles, Gabby Douglas, Madison Kocian and Aly Raisman, the meets are the fun part of their jobs. The toughest competitions happen in quiet at the regular training camps Karolyi carefully oversees. When the lights come on, it’s time to let loose.

Biles admitted there were nerves before Sunday’s preliminaries, though it hardly looked like it while the Americans posted the highest score by more than nine points. The only moment of tension on Tuesday came early. When Hernandez was introduced to the crowd, Raisman nudged her and told her to wave, which the 16-year-old did with a toothy smile.

Barely five minutes later, the youngest member of Team USA was all business. Her double-twisting Yurchenko – basically a roundoff into a pair of twists – put the machine in motion. Raisman, who won three medals in London four years ago and seemed to be on the outside looking in as recently as this spring, followed with perhaps the finest vault of her long career. When Biles drilled her Amanar and put up

a 15.933 – the highest of the night – the U.S. was already on top of the leaderboard.

Yet it’s not just enough for Karolyi for her team to win. She stopped measuring the Americans against everyone else long ago. Karolyi wants there to be no doubt. And there wasn’t.

The U.S. went through 28 rotations over two days, just like the other seven teams that made the team final. Unlike the other seven, the Americans didn’t slip off uneven bars. They didn’t hop off balance beams. It’s that ability to avoid mistakes when it counts that’s as much a testament to Karolyi’s meticulous preparation as their dynamic and unparalleled gymnastics.

While the gold was never in doubt, you wouldn’t have known about it by watching Karolyi. She clutched the white railing in front of her during Biles’ floor routine, nodding with approval with each gravity-escaping tumbling pass.

Russia, which wasn’t sure it would even be included in the games until just days before the opening ceremonies as the IOC and sport federations sorted out punishments for a national doping scandal, won silver. China took bronze.

Defending champion Serena Williams is out of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics after a stunning loss in the third round of singles.

The No. 1-seeded American was beaten, 6-4, 6-3, on Tuesday night by Elina Svitolina of Ukraine.

Williams made 37 unforced errors, including eight double-faults – five in one game.

She and sister Venus lost in the first round of doubles.

American archer Ellison advances by beating friend For American archer Brady Ellison, there’s no better feeling than moving on – and no worse feeling that it was at the expense of his best friend.

Ellison made it through the second round of the men’s archery tournament Tuesday at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics by knocking off teammate/hunting buddy Jake Kaminski.

Stevens takes silver in judo at 81-kilos

American Travis Stevens has won a silver medal in the men’s 81-kilogram division in judo, losing to Russia’s Khasan Khalmurzaev in the final.

Stevens won most of his fights by the maximum score in judo.

Doughnuts can be made healthier in the oven

Doughnuts are my kryptonite.

Fried sweet dough dipped in glaze, and then dunked into a cup of steaming-hot coffee? Yes, please. And I will give this to you straight: Once or twice a year, I’m all in. I load up the car and take the kids to our favorite doughnut spot, and we throw caution to the wind.

But for the average Sunday-brunchtype of indulgence, a girl needs a plan. I wanted to create a doughnut that would scratch the itch on a more semi-regular basis. And the baked version is just the ticket.

I make a doughnut in perhaps my favorite flavor of all time – peanut butter chocolate – that truly feels like a major indulgence, while it’s actually just a minor one, thanks to a few tricks.

First, get yourself a full-sized baked doughnut tin, stat. Not to sound bossy, but this will change your life. Or at least your weekend.

Second little trick: Use a lot less

sugar than you would use for a cake recipe. The little bit of sugary glaze will make the doughnut taste sweeter than it is, because it’s on the outside.

Third trick: I use three kinds of chocolate – melted chocolate and cocoa powder (both unsweetened) and then just a couple of tablespoons of mini-chocolate chips, which even in small quantities add a gooey-melted chocolate vibe that says “today is special.”

Lastly, I use defatted peanut flour (also called “dried peanut butter”). It has all the flavor and a fraction of the calories of peanut butter, perfect for smoothies and baked goods.

And as a bonus, these doughnuts can be made gluten-free.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Baked Doughnuts Start to finish: 30 minutes Servings: 6 doughnuts

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted 1 square unsweetened chocolate, melted 1/3 cup brown sugar (or 1/2 cup if you

want sweeter) 1 large egg 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 teaspoon white or cider vinegar 1/2 cup lowfat milk 3/4 cup flour 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa 2 tablespoons powdered peanut butter (or peanut flour) 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons mini chocolate chips For the glaze 1 tablespoon powdered peanut butter (“peanut flour”) 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder 2/3 cup powdered sugar 2 tablespoons milk 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

In a small bowl, sift the flour, cocoa, dried peanut butter, baking powder and soda and salt together. Add the chocolate chips and toss to coat. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and stir with a wooden spoon until mixed.

Spray a doughnut baking tin with nonstick spray. Scrape the batter into a 1-quart resealable plastic bag and snip the corner to make a 1/2-inch opening. Pipe the batter into the doughnut molds.

Bake until doughnuts are dry and cooked through, about 15 minutes. Meanwhile, whisk together the glaze ingredients in a small bowl until smooth. Once the doughnuts are cooked, allow to cool a few minutes before removing from the mold. Allow to cool to the touch and then dip the prettier side (the side that was in the mold) into the glaze and set on baking rack for the glaze to cool and harden.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. In a large glass bowl, whisk together the butter, chocolate and brown sugar until smooth. Add the egg, vanilla, vinegar and milk and whisk together.

Nutrition information per serving: 283 calories; 87 calories from fat; 10 g fat (5 g saturated; 0 g trans fats); 48 mg cholesterol; 279 mg sodium; 45 g carbohydrate; 3 g fiber; 28 g sugar; 6 g protein.

32 Drug combination may lower cholesterol Dear Dr. K: Despite taking statins, my cholesterol hasn’t dropped as low as my doctor would like. I figured he’d put me on the new PCSK9 inhibitors. Instead, he suggested I stay on my statin, but also take another drug called ezetimibe. What can you tell me about this combination?

Dear Reader: From what you say, I assume your doctor has used the highest dose of the most potent statins before giving up on those drugs. There are very few people whose cholesterol does not drop substantially on statins alone.

However, if your cholesterol still is not low enough despite maximizing statin treatment, then you do need something else. The cholesterol-lowering drugs known as PCSK9 inhibitors roared onto the market last year. Thanks to their impressive performance in clinical trials – in one year, they lowered LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels by 40 to 60 percent – doctors and patients alike greeted them with excitement. But these drugs aren’t for everyone.

Why? One big reason is cost. PCSK9 inhibitors cost an estimated $14,600 a year. Did I just hear you gulp? I thought so. By contrast, most statins are available as generics. They can cost as little as $4 a month through discount programs at large chain stores.

Moreover, the statins have been proven to decrease actual heart attacks and strokes. Doctors do not know yet whether the PCSK9 inhibitors ultimately will do the same. Finally, PCSK9 inhibitors are given by injection every two to four weeks, whereas statins are pills.

But when statins alone do not lower LDL cholesterol adequately, there are other options than the PCSK9 inhibitors.

One alternative is ezetimibe (Zetia).

This drug blocks cholesterol in food from crossing the intestinal wall and getting into

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff the bloodstream. It can lower LDL levels by roughly 15 to 20 percent when used alone. And when added to statins, it can lower cholesterol further. Ezetimibe has an excellent safety record and generally is well tolerated.

One large study compared adding ezetimibe to the statin simvastatin (the combination found in the drug Vytorin) to using one of the statin drugs (simvastatin) alone. The combination was more effective in preventing heart attacks and strokes.

The study included more than 18,000 people who were recovering from heart attacks. After six years, LDL levels in the ezetimibe-plus-simvastatin group dropped considerably lower than in the group taking just simvastatin. More important, comparing a theoretical group of 100,000 people taking the combined drugs to a group of the same size taking just the simvastatin, 2,000 more people taking just simvastatin would have had another heart attack or a stroke.

Ezetimibe works when added to any statin. If the combination of a statin plus ezetimibe doesn’t work for you, then your doctor may consider a PCSK9 inhibitor.

Not all insurance companies pay for PCSK9 inhibitors. Those that do need proof from your doctor that every other way to lower your cholesterol has not produced adequate results. Hopefully, adding ezetimibe will do the trick. I’ll bet it will.

First, East should check the points -- a theme of all deals. Dummy has 19, East holds 11, and South promised 10. So, West’s main job is to avoid reneging!

Second, East can see only two defensive tricks: his aces. He must hope partner has led a singleton.

Third, East wins with his club ace and carefully returns the jack, his highest-remaining club being a suit-preference signal for spades, the higher-ranking of the other two side suits. West ruffs the trick and shifts to a spade. Now East must complete his job by winning with the ace and leading a low club. When West ruffs with his second heart, it uppercuts the dummy and promotes a trump trick for East’s queen -- the fourth defensive trick.
