Two selected in Rialto bid

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – An advisory committee to the Rialto Square Theatre decided Monday on two finalists out of five proposals from companies looking to become third-party managers of the theater.

The five companies that made proposals were Caesars Entertainment, Onesti Entertainment, VenuWorks, Pinnacle Venue Services and SMG. The committee discussed all five proposals before each member anonymously ranked them in order of most-favorite to least-favorite on a sheet of paper. The votes were then tallied.

The committee was nearly unanimous in ranking the top two proposals. VenuWorks claimed the No.1 spot with 10 out of 11 first-place votes, while Pinnacle Venue Services secured the No. 2 spot with 10 out of 11 second-place votes. SMG placed third with nine out of 11 third-place votes. Caesars Entertainment and Onesti Entertainment placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

Pinnacle projected a loss of $693,000 in the first year but projected a loss of $488,000 in the third year. The company has not yet toured the Rialto, but requested additional financial information before its proposal. Committee members said it’s about decreasing the loss as much as possible year-by-year.

The committee will tentatively meet at 4 p.m. Aug. 15 to hear formal proposals. Rialto Square Theatre board Chairman Dan Vera notified both companies after the meeting. They will each get 30 minutes to present on five subject areas and 20 minutes for a question-and-answer session.

Depending on how the presentations go, the committee could vote to recommend a third-party manager that evening. Or it could wait until the planned voting meeting scheduled for Aug. 17.

Minooka D-201 board to meet over collective bargaining issues

fsarver@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Minooka District 201 board members plan to discuss collective bargaining issues Tuesday amid disputes over the district’s first union contract for bus drivers and aides.

A special board meeting has been scheduled for noon at the district’s boardroom, 305 W. Church St., Minooka.

District 201 Superintendent Kris Monn stated in an email that the meeting is being held to allow the board to discuss collective bargaining issues in closed session.

No board action or discussion will take place in open session, he stated, although there will be an opportunity for public comment. There are no plans for presentations. Minooka District 111

Committee members were fond of VenuWorks’ willingness to invest in food and beverage up to $350,000. Rialto finance manager Dale Evans said VenuWorks indicated how the Rialto could duplicate what a similar theater has done in Davenport, Iowa.

Joliet City Councilman Pat Mudron, who is council’s liaison to the Rialto, said the company manages several other theaters similar to the Rialto and demonstrated a clear understanding of the position the Rialto is in. Committee members were also encouraged by the company’s financial plan.

In regard to Pinnacle Venue Services, Evans said the company uses consumer feedback to help steer venues in the right direction. He said Pinnacle’s proposed operating budgets indicated a financial loss in the first year of management, which committee members called “very realistic.”

The union sent notices Aug. 1 to both districts of intent to strike over negotiation disputes.

One of those disputes is whether the drivers’ and aides’ first contract will include fair share, in which non-union drivers and aides have to pay union fees.

No date was given for the strike but district officials believe it may occur on the first day of school, which is Aug. 17 for District 201.

On Monday, Tom Flynn, Teamsters Local 179 president, said he wasn’t planning to attend the District 201 special meeting, but that some union representatives may be there.

He said he remained optimistic that district officials will “come to their senses” and meet with him to finish negotiations.

Concerned Citizens of Joliet wants 8 city council districts

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Concerned Citizens of Joliet on Monday delivered more than 5,000 petition signatures to the Joliet City Clerk in hopes of placing a referendum on the Nov. 8 ballot to form eight Joliet City Council districts.

The group wants to eliminate three at-large council positions while expanding the number of council districts from five to eight. Group Chairwoman Maria Aracelia Rosas-Urbano said the group would like each of the proposed eight districts to represent about 18,000 residents.

The group, composed of 10 to 15 people who have been raising awareness and acquiring signatures throughout the city, has seen what it believes to be imbalanced representation because of the city’s councilmanic districting policy. Rosas-Urbano said there are areas of the city that lack lights, safe sidewalks and nice parks. Some school zones are without crossing guards, she said.

Rosas-Urbano pointed out that four of the nine council members – including Mayor Bob O’Dekirk – represent the downtown area or nearby, while other districts have one representative each. The group wants the council to be more representative of the city’s diversity, Rosas-Urbano said. They believe an eight-district system will create a more balanced, economically vibrant community.

“We want to make it so every corner of the city is heard,” Rosas-Urbano said. “We’ve asked residents.

People barely know who the councilmen-at-large are. They speak for themselves.”

Monday was the deadline for filing a petition for a referendum for the November ballot, Joliet City Clerk Christa Desiderio said last week.

The next step for the group, Rosas-Urbano said, is to continue promoting the cause ahead of the November election – if the petition passes the Aug. 15 objection deadline.

Concerned Citizens of Joliet tried to get the measure on the ballot in November 2014, but the City Electoral Board ruled that the group had not submitted enough valid signatures for the referendum.

Along with making people aware of

the districting issue, the group wants to boost voter turnout.

“The most exciting part is getting people to the polls,” Rosas-Urbano said.

Voter turnout in the city is far too low, she said. In April 2015, 13,983 voters out of about 148,000 Joliet residents turned out to vote in the mayoral election.

By getting more people to vote, the organization believes it will see more residents’ concerns adequately spoken for.

‘It’s one big family’ Students develop friendships, discipline and leadership at JROTC drill camp

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Lincoln-Way students wanting to know firsthand the experience of being a Air Force JROTC cadet came to Central High School for a camp that introduces them to a life of discipline, teamwork and leadership.

Kyra Baltas, a Lincoln-Way West senior, was one of more than 100 students at Central on Monday doing physical exercises and games as part of the JROTC summer drill camp. The camp is open to all students.

Although not new to JROTC, Baltas

knows the program is accepting of every student who wants to join.

“It’s one big family. Everybody, no matter who you are, you can come and you’re accepted and you can be who you are, and you’ll find people like you,” she said.

The summer drill camp has been held for nine years at Lincoln-Way and is a way to introduce students to the core values of JROTC, which in the words of Master Sgt. Dan Schliffka, are discipline, teamwork and leadership.

The drill camp promotes discipline like no other, he said.

Joliet man gets 6½ years for Family Dollar robbery

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet man was sentenced Monday to six years and six months behind bars for his attempt last year to rob a Joliet discount store.

Devan N. Traylor, 22, pleaded guilty to an unlawful use of weapon charge before Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes on the day he was scheduled to be tried for attempted armed robbery. Devan N. On Nov. 12, Traylor Traylor went into Family Dollar, 1224 Richards St., selected a can of deodorizer and approached the counter to show the clerk he had a handgun, Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Tom Slazyk said.

“He requested the money, [but] he didn’t obtain any and left,” Slazyk said.

Witnesses got the license plate of the car Traylor left in, but police reportedly recognized him from previous encounters. After being taken into custody,

Traylor admitted to going into the Family Dollar, authorities said.

At the time of the holdup, Traylor had been on parole for two months from an eight-year jail sentence for armed robbery.

“Why do I sentence him to less time [under the plea agreement] than he had before?” Alessio Policandriotes asked Slazyk and defense attorney George Lenard.

Slazyk said surveillance footage is obscured, but does show Traylor with a weapon. Lenard said the evidence would show Traylor was not armed and noted he was not picked out of one of the photo lineups shown to the clerk.

In July and August 2011, Traylor held a knife to cashiers’ throats while robbing registers at Unique Thrift Store, 2155 W. Jefferson St. in Joliet, and Dollar Tree and Food-4-Less in the Hillcrest Shopping Center in Crest Hill, according to Herald-News files.

Witnesses called police to the Food4-Less robbery before Traylor was able to escape on a bicycle, police said at the time.

JOLIET – A Joliet man has died after he was struck Sunday morning by a car driven by a man authorities allege may have been under the influence of marijuana.

The fatal crash happened at 9:14 a.m. while Elliot D. Burks, 49, was walking his bicycle south on Briggs Street at Cass Street, Joliet Police Department Capt.

Jeff Allbert said.

“A witness said the driver of a 1991 Chevrolet Caprice going west- Milbert B. bound on Cass tried to Waters beat the yellow light and struck the man in the intersection,” Allbert said.

Burks, who had been crossing the street, was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox. The Will County

Coroner’s Office reported that Burks was pronounced dead at 11:59 p.m.

Sunday. An autopsy is scheduled to be performed Tuesday.

Allbert said responding officers smelled marijuana in the Caprice and later found the drug inside. Milbert B. Waters, 43, of the 100 block of Akin Avenue in Joliet, was arrested on charges of aggravated driving under the influence and driving without insurance.

Waters was booked early Monday into the Will County Jail.

According to Will County court records, Waters was charged with driving under the influence in April 2007 by state police and agreed to plead guilty when the charge was changed to reckless driving.

In addition to more than two dozen other traffic cases, Waters has also pleaded guilty to past charges of drug possession, delivery of drugs and unauthorized possession of a firearm, according to court records.

Metro Exhibit Corporation began relocating in January to the 40,000-square-foot space at 1308 Marquette Drive in the village’s Marquette Business Park. The move became official June 1 and the business is now finishing improvements to the facility.

MEC creates custom, high-end convention vendor displays and its entire operations are now in Romeoville, including manufacturing, Mayor John Noak said.

“It really is just a cumulative net gain,” Noak said.

He noted MEC will bring not only its employees to Romeoville, but also

This is not the first time Phillips Chevrolet has expanded. LOCAL BRIEFS Authorities investigating fatal fall in Crest Hill

CREST HILL – Authorities are investigating the death of a worker who fell Sunday from the roof of a building under construction.

Shortly before 10 a.m., Fernando V. Gamez, 42, of Sioux City, Iowa, was placing tiles on the roof decking of a building for Rich Products in the 21000 block of Division Street in Crest Hill when he fell from a beam.

“It appears he wasn’t harnessed and got too close to the edge,” Deputy Police Chief Ed Clark said Monday.

Gamez’s co-workers called 911 and he was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, where he died at 10:51 a.m., according to the Will County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday. Occupational Safety & Health Administration spokeswoman Rhonda Burke said the agency has opened an investigation into Gamez’s employer, Ortner Construction of Danbury, Iowa.

Ortner Construction was previously inspected in 2014 by OSHA’s office in Peoria and was cited for lack of frequent and regular inspections of job site, equipment and materials and for employees not standing firmly on the floor of an aerial lift, Burke said.

OSHA standards require that an effective form of fall protection be in use when workers perform construction activities 6 feet or more above the next lower level, she said.

Couple who died in Joliet house fire identified

JOLIET – The Will County Coroner’s Office has identified the couple who died Saturday night in a house fire on the far West Side of Joliet.

Firefighters were called at 10:37 p.m. to the home in the 2900 block of Sun Valley Court, where they found a basement tenant who said two people were still inside the burning structure.

The fire was extinguished within minutes, but firefighters found the body of Rimantas Zukas, 61, on the first floor, according to Joliet Fire Department reports. The Coroner’s Office reports that Zukas was pronounced dead at 11:50 p.m. at the scene.

On the second floor, firefighters found Zukas’ wife, Brone Zukiene, 60. Zukiene was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, where she died at 11:30 p.m.

Autopsies performed Monday showed both victims died from smoke inhalation, according to the Coroner’s Office. The manner of death will be determined after toxicology results are available.

Joliet police said preliminary investigation shows the fire was accidental and possibly started by candles burning in the home.

Evidence at scene of playground fire leads police to 5 juveniles PLAINFIELD – Plainfield police are talking with five juveniles believed to be involved with setting a playground fire Sunday evening.

Officers were dispatched at 5:59 p.m. to Walker’s Grove Elementary School, 24810 W. 135th St. for the fire, according to a police department news release.

“On arrival, officers found evidence of what started the fire. This evidence led officers to five juveniles involved with setting the fire,” the news release stated.

The Plainfield Fire Protection District also responded to the incident, and firefighters extinguished the blaze.

The juveniles and their parents and guardians have cooperated with investigators, according to the news release, and the case is still under investigation.

Schliffka said competition is needed for each of the flights, or student groups, within JROTC. “It really promotes a lot of teamwork. It really helps people to step up with the leadership skills,” he said.

But the benefits of JROTC extend beyond the skills needed to succeed in the program. Brianna Fasano, who graduated from Lincoln-Way Central this year, said the program helps with scholarships and networking for college.

When she joined, she instantly made friends.

“You learn so many new things that you didn’t think you’d be interested in, but you do realize you actually can find a common interest with all these people. There’s so many ways to get involved,” Fasano said.

Even though she’s an alumna, Fasano was at the drill camp Monday to help out upperclass students and ensure the camp runs smoothly.

“We like to come back because we miss everybody,” she said.

The first day of drill camp is mostly students getting together and learning about each other and doing some physical exercise, Fasano said. The games and team-building activities help build camaraderie, she said.

men nervous about their first experience going to high school, Fasano said.

The camp introduces them to how high school is as opposed to the stereotypes, she said.

“You really learn that from being in ROTC. You meet some really good people, and they become lifelong friends,” she said.

Tim Lutz, a Lincoln-Way East senior who is a JROTC group commander at the school, said he was interested in joining the program since knowing about it from his cousins when he was a child, although he didn’t know too much about it.

He said he learned it’s a program where high school cliques don’t matter.

“Once I got in, I realized how truly amazing it is. I’ve gotten to meet people from all different groups that typically don’t mingle in high school,” he said.

Survived by two daughters, Annette (Jeffery) Brandt and Michelle (David) Swanson; three sons, Jerry (Theresa) Cassem Jr., Jefferey (Amanda) Cassem and James (Nichole) Cassem; 14 grandchildren, Jennifer, Eric, Jeffery (Holly), Dalton, Jarrod, Kayla, Joshua, Lexi, Ethan, Bella, Lanni, John, Elliot and Cali; four great-grandchildren, Savana, Lily, Ella and Alonni; two sisters, Barb and Sue; numerous nieces, nephews and Camp family at Lake Point.

FRANCIS JONES Francis “Bud” Jones, 77, late of Elwood, died Aug. 7, 2016, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home after a long illness.

Born and raised in Joliet, he attended St. Patrick’s Grade School, Washington Junior High and Joliet Catholic High School. A member of Teamster Local 179, Bud worked for Alexander Lumber Company for 43 years until his retirement in 1999. Bud served his community as a proud

member of the Elwood Village Board from 2007 until his death. He was also a former Jackson Township trustee and the former president of the Wyndstone Village Homeowners Association.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy (Olsen) in 2013; his parents, Francis and Mary (Breen); his sister, Kathleen Jones; and numerous aunts and uncles, especially his uncle, John (Lauretta) Breen to whom he was devoted.

Bud is survived by his dear children, William (Annette) Jones of Yorkville and Judge Sarah Jones of Channahon; his sister, Mary Virginia (Raymond) Sicinski of Shorewood; his brother, Raymond (Marilyn) Jones of Naperville; his nieces, Laura Ballard of Danville, CA; Stephanie (Jeff) Kastelic of Naperville; and nephews, Michael (Christine) Sicinski of Plainfield and David (Nicole) Jones and Daniel (Kelly) Jones, both of Naperville; his great-nieces and nephews Abby and Jonathan Sicinski, Ben, Annie, Sam and Maggie Ballard, Jake, Julia and Will Kastelic and Benjamin, Samantha, Anna and Owen Jones; and numerous cousins. CHICAGO – A man who unsuccessfully challenged Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan in the March Democratic primary has filed a federal lawsuit accusing the longtime political powerbroker of fraud and seeking to “win an election at all costs.”

Jason Gonzales of Chicago said Monday that Madigan – who also leads Illinois’ Democratic Party – falsely called him a “convicted felon” in campaign ads. He also said Madigan ran two “phony” candidates with Hispanic last names to dilute the votes of Hispanic residents in their 22nd House district race.

Gonzales was convicted of theft and other crimes as a teenager. The Harvard-educated management consultant received a pardon from then-Gov. Pat Quinn in 2015 and had his criminal record expunged – a fact he said Madigan was aware of and should have precluded him from telling voters he was a felon.

Emanuel backs city police leader’s handling of shooting

CHICAGO – Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said he supports the police superintendent’s decision to take away police powers from the officers who fired their weapons at the scene where an 18-year-old was fatally shot in the back.

But the Chicago Tribune reported Monday that Emanuel said it’s too soon to say whether the July 28 shooting of Paul O’Neal suggests officers need more training.

Video of the incident was released Friday. Days earlier, Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson stripped police powers from the two officers who fired at the fleeing stolen car O’Neal was driving and the officer who shot the unarmed teen in the back after he ran from the car.

Rockford lawsuit targets Rauner’s ‘turnaround agenda’

ROCKFORD – A Winnebago County courtroom is the setting for a struggle over Gov. Bruce Rauner’s so-called turnaround agenda.

A lawsuit by the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150 is technically about whether the Rockford City Council violated the state Open Meetings Act in April. The Rockford Register Star reported that aldermen adopted a resolution supporting the Republican governor’s pro-business, anti-union proposals.

The first-term governor supports changes in state law that he said would lower the cost of doing business, crimp union power and boost the economy.

Cook, Lake counties to remove 3 dams on Des Plaines River

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – Cook and Lake counties plan to remove three obsolete dams this fall on the Des Plaines River to improve wildlife habitat and water quality.

The counties have been working with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to continue a program that began several years ago but stalled in part because of state funding issues, the Daily Herald reported.

Lake County leaders who are tired of waiting for approval for a grant they might never receive have budgeted $690,000 to remove the last two dams on their stretch of the river. The two dams are located at the MacArthur Woods forest preserve near Libertyville and the Captain Daniel Wright Woods forest preserve near Mettawa.

Gonzales denied Monday that he has any ties to the governor other than having asked some of his supporters for money. He described himself as an “independent progressive Democrat” who ran for office for the first time this year because he wants to change Illinois.

Gonzales’ attorney, Anthony Peraica, alleged that Madigan had operatives waiting at the Illinois State Board of Elections office on the final day for candidates to file paperwork to run in the primary. He said Gonzales turned in his paperwork to challenge Madigan just minutes before the deadline, and moments later Madigan’s “minions” filed petitions for the other two candidates.

Peraica claimed it’s a “longstanding practice” for so-called “ghost” candidates to be put up to split the vote, and that he hopes the lawsuit will put an end to it.

Gonzales is also seeking an unspecified amount in financial damages, saying his reputation was harmed.

“Everything is in place, and now is an excellent time to be working in the Des Plaines River because there’s no water,” said Jim Anderson, director of natural resources for the Lake County Forest Preserve District.

Additionally, Cook County is set to begin removing the Dempster Avenue Dam in Des Plaines in mid-August.

Three dams will remain in the county’s portion of the Des Plaines River after the dam is completely removed by the end of October, said Eric Otto, an engineer with the Forest Preserve District of Cook County.

“We’re anticipating removing them whenever funding comes from the state,” Otto said. “The projects aren’t on hold. We’re moving ahead with the permitting and design.”

The dams originally were built for recreation, sanitary waste purposes, or as farm equipment crossings, but they’ve become obsolete because of highway bridges and wastewater treatment facilities. They trap silt, pose potential hazards to paddlers and prevent the movement of fish.

“Our senior wildlife biologist is always excited by the fish species he sees after the dams are removed,” Otto said.

Lake County previously removed the dam at Ryerson Woods in Deerfield in 2011.

Oak Lawn man dies after Metra train strikes SUV

OAK LAWN – Authorities said an Oak Lawn man died Monday after the SUV he was driving was struck by a Metra SouthWest Service train.

Metra spokesman Tom Miller said the collision occurred about 7:40 a.m. Monday after the SUV was driven around crossing gates at 98th Street and Central Avenue in Oak Lawn. Miller said all bells and lights at the crossing were functioning.

The SUV driver was pronounced dead at a hospital. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified him as Arthur Hornsby, 59, of Oak Lawn.

The crash delayed commuters on the line. Miller said all trains began moving again by 9 a.m.

A jury of six men and six women was seated Monday for the expected one-week trial of outgoing Attorney General Kathleen Kane, whose first term has been rocked by petty feuds, political intrigue and a pornographic email scandal.

Kane, the first woman and first Democrat elected to the post, is charged with leaking secret grand jury information to a Philadelphia reporter to embarrass enemies and then lying about it under oath.

She denies wrongdoing.

The witness list includes a Supreme Court justice who stepped down over the pornographic email scandal; the NAACP official at the center of the long-dormant probe leaked to the press; and the special prosecutor whose investigation of the leak led to Kane.

Trump tries to right his campaign, talks of tax cuts

DETROIT – Promising to “jump-start America” to a new era of prosperity, Donald Trump announced a revamped economic plan Monday aimed at revitalizing a stagnant U.S. economy by cutting taxes for workers and businesses. He assailed Hillary Clinton as a candidate who merely would extend a Democratic period of old ideas and weakness.

Trying to move past recent stumbles, Trump proposed a simplified three-bracket income tax system that hewed closely to what House Republicans have recommended, the latest indication the GOP presidential nominee is working to put infighting with his party’s leaders behind him. In a shift from the plan he proposed during the primary season, he increased the tax rate that the highest-earning Americans would pay.

With few exceptions, Trump provided more of a philosophical basis for an economic plan than a series of specifics.

He did spell out proposed tax brackets and called for greater child care deductions for families.

As he called for urgent change away from Democratic policies, he envisioned a nation refocused on manufacturing at home and wary of trade deals abroad – a country bearing little resemblance to the globally focused economy of recent years.

“Americanism, not globalism, will be our new credo,” he said in his address at the Detroit Economic Club. “Our country will reach amazing new heights – maybe heights never attained before.”

Delivering his speech from a teleprompter, Trump was interrupted repeatedly by protesters who stood on chairs and shouted at him before being pulled out of the room by security guards. He did not react harshly as he often has in the past, either quietly thanking the guards or simply powering ahead in his speech.

Only days ago, Trump triggered panic within the GOP when he declined to endorse House Speaker Paul Ryan’s re-election or that of other leading Republicans. He sought to put the dust-up to bed Friday by finally backing those candidates while also trying to move past other controversies, such as his verbal attacks on a Muslim-American family whose son died fighting in Iraq.

Republicans inside and outside of Trump’s campaign have implored him to shift the conversation back to Democrat Clinton’s perceived shortcomings. On Monday, he obliged, accusing her of jilting American workers and coming up short on promises to constituents.

At her own rally in St. Petersburg, Florida, Clinton assailed Trump’s plans, arguing they would benefit the rich and do little to create jobs or boost the economy.

“His tax plans would give super-big tax breaks to large corporations and the really wealthy,” Clinton said, suggesting they would push the country into another recession.

She has scheduled her own speech in Detroit later in the week. Her campaign said she will call for the largest investment in jobs since World War II. Trump focused in part on taxes on U.S. businesses, declaring that no company should pay more than 15 percent of its income in taxes. That would be a major drop from the current 35 percent corporate tax rate, although many companies pay much less because of various deductions. He also called for a moratorium on federal regulations, which he framed as strangling businesses.

As in the House GOP plan backed by Ryan, Trump’s proposal on individual income taxes would simplify the code, which currently has seven brackets, down to three, and lower the top rate to 33 percent after deductions from the current 39.6 percent. That’s a departure from the plan Trump unveiled last fall during the GOP primary that envisioned four brackets and a top rate of 25 percent.

While Trump had tried to paint his original plan as a boom to the middle class, independent groups concluded it dramatically favored the wealthy and would balloon the national debt by as much as $10 trillion over the next decade. His current plan would also add to the debt, but less.

Most other airlines rely on one of a handful of specialty travel-technology companies to help with IT. Delta’s system, called Deltamatic, started as a joint venture with Northwest and TWA in the 1990s. “Delta has been so confident that it is as good at this as anybody that it took everything back in-house,” said Seth Kaplan, co-author of a book about Delta’s rise from bankruptcy to prominence in the industry.

Kaplan said all airlines have some old components in their IT systems, including Delta. “But the front end is

all very modern, and Delta is rather well-regarded” in the industry.

IT problems are not unique to airlines. There have been high-profile breaches and breakdowns at banks and retailers, among others. Airlines have particular challenges because their systems are constantly undergoing changes and additions, including automation to handle the large volume of transactions with customers.

When was the last time you called an airline on the phone?

That degree of automation hindered Delta’s ability to inform passengers, many of whom didn’t know about the outage until they got to the airport. In the first several hours after

the outage, when planes were grounded, Delta’s website and other systems showed flights as being on time.

Computer network outages have affected nearly all the major carriers in recent years. After it combined IT systems with merger partner Continental, United suffered shutdowns on several days, most recently in 2015.

American also experienced breakdowns in 2015, including technology problems that briefly stopped flights at its big hub airports in Dallas, Chicago and Miami.

Recovering from an outage can take several days, as Southwest proved last month. Southwest said it canceled 2,300 flights between July 20 and 24, about 12 percent of its schedule, and FlightStats Inc. said more than 8,000 flights were delayed.

Until Monday, Delta had been considered among the leaders in operations and was thought to be immune to big IT problems.

DALLAS – Twice in less than a month, a major airline was paralyzed by a computer outage that prevented passengers from checking in and flights from taking off.

Last month, it took Southwest days to recover from a breakdown it blamed on a faulty router. On Monday, it was Delta’s turn, as a power outage crippled the airline’s information technology systems and forced it to cancel or delay hundreds of flights. Delta employees had to write out boarding passes by hand, and at one airport they resurrected a dot-matrix printer from the graveyard of 1980s technology.

Why do these kinds of meltdowns keep happening?

The answer is that airlines depend on huge, overlapping and complex IT systems to do just about everything, from operating flights to handling ticketing, boarding, websites and mobile-phone apps. And after years of rapid consolidation in the airline business, these computer systems may be a hodgepodge of parts of varying ages and from different merger partners.

These systems also are being worked harder, with new fees and options for passengers, and more transactions – Delta’s traffic has nearly doubled in the past decade.

“These old legacy systems are operating much larger airlines that are being accessed in many, many more ways,” said Daniel Baker, CEO of tracking service FlightAware.com. “It has really been taxing.”

The result: IT failures that can inconvenience tens of thousands of passengers and create long-lasting ill will.

It is unclear exactly what went wrong at Delta. The airline said it suffered a power outage at an Atlanta installation around 1:30 a.m. CDT that caused many of its computer systems to fail. But the local electric company, Georgia Power, said that it was not to blame and that the equipment failure was on Delta’s end.

IT experts questioned whether Delta’s network was adequately prepared for the inevitable breakdown.

“One piece of equipment going out shouldn’t cause this,” said Bill Curtis, chief scientist at software-analysis firm Cast. “It’s a bit shocking.”

Curtis said IT systems should be designed so that when a part fails, its functions automatically switch over to a backup, preferably in a different location. “And if I had a multibillion-dollar business running on this, I would certainly want to have some kind of backup power,” he added.

Delta officials declined to say what kind of backup procedures they have.

Boyter said the Steelmen were missing “a few guys, but thankfully their families got in touch with us and explained the situation. Everyone was out that we were expecting out, and I know our numbers will grow a little the next couple of days.”

Likewise, Aubry said, there were no big surprises in the West camp.

“We’ve been here basically all summer,” he said. “Then this day gets here and a few kids show up who have not been around. You can’t make summer mandatory, but it pretty much is. However, if a kid shows up now and shows he is good enough, he can still get a spot on the team.

“That’s football. We’re just excited to get back at it, to have the kids and coaches here.”

A common thread between West and Central is both will rely on young quarterbacks as they prepare for their first season in the Southwest Prairie Conference.

Tigers sophomore Jaxon Aubry, the coach’s son, played a significant chunk of the varsity season as a freshman after Alex Tibble was injured. Steelmen junior Zach Wisneski is entering his third season as the varsity starter.

“The guys’ overall attitude isn’t that of a group whose varsity program has gone 0-29,” Pereiro said. “We haven’t been focusing on that as a team or program. And for our kids, you can tell that they have decided to move forward. One of our mantras in the program is to go 1-0 in everything that we do. They’ve taken in that concept and run with it and have done a great job of saying that this is their team and they’re not looking back but looking forward.”

Meanwhile, Bicker is looking to build on the Cougars’ past successes and hopes that South will eventually become a program which turns out successful teams on a consistent basis.

“As a program you’re going to always have ups and downs but we want to be consistent so that our downs don’t go so far down,” Bicker said.

“We want to raise our floor and then see if we can raise our ceiling. That’s what we’re looking for. We want to build consistency within the program.

We want our freshmen to learn things that carry over to their senior year.”

Pereiro knows that the Wildcats

“I think the experience I got last year is going to slingshot us forward as a team,” Jaxon Aubry said.

“I think I was able to grow and mature as a quarterback. I learned a lot about how to decipher defenses and anticipate blitzes.”

One way or another, either as a receiver or running back, the Tigers’ offensive plan will include getting the ball into the hands of another sophomore, Kevon Dorris, who also received significant varsity experience last season.

“I feel comfortable with this team and my teammates,” Dorris said.

“It’s nice to be back with everybody.

We have to get the chemistry down to be ready for the season.”

That sort of responsibility generally falls to senior leaders. Defensive end Julius Garrett, all-conference in the SouthWest Suburban Blue a year ago and aiming toward a college football career, is among the Tigers who fill the role.

“From the experience I picked up last year from the senior leaders, I feel I’ve been able to help build team chemistry already,” he said. “Team bonding is very important, and this year’s team leaders are here to help with that. We want to bring everyone more together as a family.”

In about 21/2 weeks, the hope is positive results from that effort will begin to be realized.

PLAINFIELD – Jon Pereiro and Bill Bicker both face similar situations this season, but at the same time, they also are dealing with circumstances that are quite different.

While Bicker and Pereiro officially kicked off their first years as head football coaches at two Plainfield schools in Monday’s opening day of practice, they face different challenges.

For Central coach Pereiro, the first task at hand is snapping a 29-game losing streak that stretches back to 2012, when the Wildcats last reached the playoffs under John Jackson.

And for South coach Bicker, it’s about getting the Cougars back to the playoffs, something that they did last year for Ken Bublitz and the program has achieved four times in six years.

Pereiro and Bicker were upbeat about what they saw from their squads during their initial practice sessions, which mirrors their enthusiasm that began with work in the offseason.

“This past summer was fantastic

“The victory will come,” Pereiro said. “But what we’re preaching to the kids is that there were times last year when I saw our athletes in games and they were playing well but then they were more focused on that end result.

We’re really trying to get them to say, ‘Win this next play, this conditioning rep or this weight room set.’ And the kids are running with that.”

The new Cougars coach doesn’t have to look at the big picture to see qualities that he likes about this year’s team.

Instead, he’s focusing on some small aspects that encourage him.

“I’ve noticed a lot of little things about our team, like being here on time, being prepared and not having excuses,” Bicker said. “The other aspect is that you can see that a lot of these guys truly want to be great.

They want to take the next step as a program. We set our individual and team goals today and they’ve bought into doing something special here.”

in terms of turnout and the excitement from the kids has been fantastic,” Pereiro said. “One of our mottos is ‘Rise Central’ and they’ve bought into that and they’ve been putting the work in to make that rise be real.

“We have talented kids who’ll put the work in, are dedicated to football and want this program to be what it can be.”

While the transition doesn’t figure to be quite as challenging at South, Bicker realizes that all involved need to be on the same page for the Cougars to take the next step.

“Our kids have really bought in to some of the things that I’ve wanted to do,” Bicker said. “They’ve embraced that, and that’s tough since they’ve been used to having good coaches and had success last year. We started a little sluggish today after being off for a week and a half, but the second half of our practice was about as good as we’ve been all summer.”

While there would seem to be a great deal of pressure on the Wildcats to snap the losing streak, their new coach likes how his team isn’t dwelling on the program’s recent past.

The result for the Joliet Catholic Academy football team this season could be a game-changer at any moment.

The primary reason is 165-pound junior speedster Ke’Von Johnson. Fall practice opened around the state Monday – with helmets the only equipment allowed for now – and it took no time at all to be reminded how quick Johnson is.

“It doesn’t really change the way we block having Ke’Von, but it takes some pressure off us in the line,” returning junior guard Shane Raber said. “We can run a lot more quick plays with him back there.”

That sort of speed kills.

Johnson received his varsity baptism last season when he stepped in after Harry Davis was injured in Week 3.

He went on to enjoy a superb season as the complement to Michael Johnson.

Now he is the main man.

“We’re going to try to use our speed,” Ke’Von Johnson said. “We

Johnson’s breakaway talent, plus pass-receiving ability out of the backfield, remind him of former JCA allstater Josh Ferguson, who starred at Illinois and is bidding for a spot on the

Indianapolis Colts’ roster.

Johnson watched and listened to Davis and Michael Johnson last season – and he still seeks their advice. Watching Michael Johnson showed him the value of running hard, not only running away from defenders.

“I hit the weight room hard over the summer and I think I’m stronger,” he said. “Michael always wanted to give the hit rather than taking it.”

Senior quarterback Patrick Roth will benefit from having Johnson in the offense, along with a few others with good wheels. Sharp said junior wingback Michael Butler, junior receiver Simon Grashoff, senior receiver Rio Strama and sophomore fullbacks Keenan Hailey and Nick Iannantone basically are wingbacks.

Johnson is confident in Roth’s ability to lead the offense.

“Pat and I are close off the field,” Johnson said. “We developed a real good relationship in the first few weeks last season when both of us were second team, before Harry got hurt and I got moved up.

TE Moeaki getting extra reps with hometown team

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – It’s been six years since Tony Moeaki had 556 receiving yards during his rookie season in Kansas City. Injuries have derailed his career, but no other Bears tight end on the current roster has eclipsed 500 receiving yards in a season.

Tony Moeaki With Zach Miller sidelined because of a concussion, it’s been Moeaki who has been receiving the extra reps with the first team. He has the experience, but he also is the newest tight end, having signed with the team after minicamp.

“It was a good birthday present,” Moeaki said after Monday’s practice

– he turned 29 on June 8, eight days before signing his contract. A Wheaton-Warrenville South product, Moeaki grew up a Bears fan.

The 6-3, 250-pounder had three catches in 11 games for the Falcons last season and appeared in six games for the Seahawks in 2014. He missed the entire 2011 season with a knee injury, but did post 453 yards in 2012.

“So far I haven’t missed a practice. Just got to take care of you body, just like everyone else,” Moeaki said.

“Now that I’m a vet, you’ve got to be on top of yourself outside the facility and so far, so good.”

Moeaki can use this time with the 1s to impress the staff as they search for the No. 2 tight end. Moeaki is hoping to stay healthy and show that 2010 and 2012 weren’t that long ago.

“I use those years to remind myself

that I can play at that level,” he said. “One was pre-knee and one was post-knee, so I don’t think about them that much but I know that I’m capable of that.”

No fighting Monday: After an ugly melee during Saturday’s practice, the Bears were scuffle-free on Monday. It probably didn’t hurt that the boss, Virginia McCaskey, was in attendance.

Coach John Fox had said that he was disappointed in the fighting, and Jay Cutler knows it’s time for the team to get focused.

“We’ve got to find that fine line of when we’re being tough and when we’re being dumb,” he said. “I think we’re right there on that edge, so now we kind have to start dialing it back and getting ready for games.”

Ted Larsen, a common participant in the extracurriculars, said fights “can’t happen in a game,” but

wouldn’t back down from his attitude in the trenches.

“It’s hot out and guys’ tempers flare,” he said. “I’m not a guy to take any crap from anybody or stand down, so that’s probably the [gist] of it.”

Injury report: Alshon Jeffery stretched with the team and did some work off to the side but didn’t catch any passes in team drills. Eddie Royal (concussion) and Zach Miller (concussion) remained out.

D-line makes noise: The starting defensive line had a strong practice.

Akiem Hicks and Mitch Unrein met Jeremy Langford in the backfield for a stop. Eddie Goldman hit Jacquizz Rodgers for a short gain, but the biggest play came from Jonathan Bullard, who shot through the line to tackle Ka’Deem Carey for a loss.

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Bears went with experience in replacing Hroniss Grasu, sliding 29-year-old Ted Larsen to the first-team center role Monday when the team returned to practice in Bourbonnais.

“He’s started in the league before.

That’s why we signed Ted – he’s an experienced lineman, he’s a veteran guy, came from a winning team,” coach John Fox said. “We have great confidence in what Ted can do.”

Larsen has 10 career starts at center in his six NFL seasons.

“It’s a position I’ve played before, but it’s working with the system, working with Jay [Cutler], that’s probably the No. 1 thing,” Larsen said. “…

I feel good with all the calls.”

Earlier in camp, Larsen played first-team right guard when Kyle Long was sidelined with a calf injury. He had been taking reps at guard and center with the second and third teams.

“He’s a pro. He stepped in today and worked with me and ones, and we didn’t miss a beat,” Cutler said.

“We’re going to be fine there. Ted’s going to step in and do a good job for us.”

“Ted knows the offense pretty well, too,” Whitehair said. “Obviously playing next to Hroniss and getting a feel for him the last four weeks, there’s some learning you have to do with Ted, but I think we’ll wrinkle those out and get on the right track.”

Charles Leno is now the only Bears offensive lineman starting the 2016 season at the same position he finished 2015, so the unit will need to get acclimated again with a new player at a new position, with almost a month to go until the opener.

“It really just comes from playing together,” Larsen said. “Me and Kyle [Long] and Bobby [Massie], we all work together in the offseason, so we have a good deal of continuity already, but it’s just getting those reps, getting those plays in practice, getting the plays in the game – that’s kind of where you build your cohesiveness.”

Hoffman prevails in Auto Dealer Late Model feature DIRECTORY STAFF REPORT

MORRIS – After a couple of weeks away from Grundy County Speedway, Eddie Hoffman found his regular stomping grounds to his liking Friday night, climbing from the fifth starting slot to winning the 30-lap Late Model feature event.

Hoffman ran in sixth, seventh and eighth places during the first 18 laps before making his move in the latter half of the event. Lap 19 saw him move from sixth place into second before he took the lead on Lap 24 and led the rest of the race, ending up .491 seconds faster than runner-up Billy Knippenberg.

John Nutley finished third with Brandon Clubb, James Gregait, Larry Schuler, Anthony Danta, Joe Vinachi, Brian Tedeschi and Scott Koerner rounding out the top 10.

Another featured race Friday night was the 33-lap Street Stock feature, known as the Candyman 33.

Seth Bloomhaert headed the field, beating current points leader John Senerchia to the checkered flag.

Raber is the only returning starter in the offensive line. With the experience he and Ke’Von Johnson gained last season, they are prepared to pass on their know-how.

“More than anything, it’s a matter of confidence and mental preparation for the new guys in the line,” Raber said. “The speed of the varsity game is so different.

“One thing everyone has to do, if you make a mistake, move on. Mistakes will happen, but don’t dwell on them. From a physical standpoint, we have a line that’s ready to play.”

The 6-foot-1, 295-pound Raber is playing right guard for now, but could slide over to center when needed.

He also will rotate into the defensive line the way Tyler Witt and Ze’Veyon Furcron did a year ago.

“Jaws (Jake Jaworski) is a great defensive coach, and I love playing

laps, with Randy Weese finishing third, Tim Stewart fourth and Christy Penrod fifth. Rounding out the top 10 were Rita Fields, John Vertello, Mark Ross Jr., Craig Matteson and Cheryl Hryn.

In the 25-lap Mid-American feature, John Vertello outlasted Ron Vandermeier Jr. to emerge with the victory. Kevin Murphy took third, followed by Kevin Gentile in fourth and Jim Kachel in fifth. Cody Clubb, Jake Bradley, Cory Clougherty, Aaron Shelton and Geoff Vezain rounded out the top 10.

The 4-Cylinder division raced a 15lap feature and Scott Ingram came up with the win ahead of Dan Schmeissing. Michael Tobuch took third, Danielle Dobczyk fourth and Scott Gagen finished fifth. Rounding out the top 10 were Bryce Leake, Kyle Royster, Matt Chester, Jeff Law and Kristi Odom.

Friday night also saw a 15-lap feature race in the Super Cups division with Jamie Domski taking first among the nine racers. Zachary Tinkle finished second, followed by Noah Eisenhower, Trevor Addams, Maggie Struthers, Dallas Frueh, Lucas Schmitt, Steve Naples and Michael Mucha.

“We had a good summer with them. Plus, the experienced guys were able to give some guidance to the guys who are new to the varsity, the way the other two (Davis and Michael Johnson) pushed me harder last year.”

The result was a good afternoon’s work on Day 1 of fall practice.

“It maybe has been even better than I expected,” Johnson said. “Everybody seems to be in sync.”

Miller said Clauson’s 112 victories are “behind a very, very short list of USAC Hall of Famers” that include Rich Vogler, A.J. Foyt, Sleepy Tripp and Mel Kintz.

He was on pace to compete in 200 races this year, earning 27 victories in 116 starts, and leading three laps of the Indianapolis 500 on May 29 – hours before winning a sprint car race 50 miles away in Kokomo in what he called an “Indiana Double.”

In a post for “The Drivers Project ,” Clauson detailed his Indy 500 experience and acknowledged he was “still pretty raw in these cars so to be out there and mix it up all day was great.” He also said Kokomo is where he grew up racing sprint cars and said it was important to celebrate there with loved ones.

The racing community has had several drivers die in crashes in recent years. In 2013, Jason Leffler died after a crash at a New Jersey sprint car race. The following year, Formula One driver Jules Bianchi suffered head injuries in the Japanese Grand Prix that ultimately cost him his life. A year ago, Justin Wilson was killed when he was struck in the head by a piece of debris during an IndyCar race at Pocono.

Clauson himself was involved in a crash just 24 hours before the fatal wreck. After Friday night’s crash, he went on Twitter to express his appreciation after the “tough hit” for his safety equipment, his chassis manufacturer and his team for getting his car ready to race again.

A four-time USAC national

champion, Clauson was a threetime winner and the defending champion at Belleville.

Clauson was a California native who earned a USAC-IndyCar scholarship for winning the 2010 USAC national driver’s title, giving him six Indy Lights starts in 2011 in a car shared with current IndyCar Series rookie Conor Daly at Sam Schmidt Motorsports. Clauson also raced eight times in USAC’s national series, with his best finish, third, coming in Iowa in 2011.

He won the scholarship award again in 2012, allowing him to make his Indianapolis 500 debut with Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing. He returned to the Indy 500 in 2015 with KVSH/ Jonathan Byrd’s Racing, and this year led his first career laps driving for Dale Coyne.

Clauson was a development driver for Chip Ganassi in NASCAR, where he competed in 26 races over the 2007 and 2008 seasons. He also spent several seasons driving for Tony Stewart’s sprint car team.

“I don’t care what happened, no matter how bad his day was, he always found a way to smile with it,” Stewart said after Sunday’s NASCAR race. “It sucks when it’s anybody in racing, it’s hard when you lose them, but it’s even worse when they’re somebody as close to you as Bryan was.”

Clauson is survived by his parents, Tim and Di, sister Taylor and fiancée, Lauren Stewart.

Funeral arrangements were pending. A memorial service in his honor will take place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway at a date to be announced.

INDIANAPOLIS – Bryan Clauson wasn’t a household name and he hadn’t yet earned the fame or fortune enjoyed by auto racing’s superstars.

Cut from the mold of the oldschool drivers, Clauson would race anything, anywhere at any time. He was chasing the USAC’s all-time wins mark – having racked up 112 already – and was well on his way to compete in 200 events this season alone. He was widely considered the best dirt-track racer in the nation.

Clauson also ran in this year’s Indy 500 for Dale Coyne Racing, which is based in Plainfield.

The wildly popular Clauson died Sunday night from injuries suffered in a crash during a weekend race in Kansas, a stunning announcement that came Monday from officials at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

“Our Bryan fought to the end with the same desire that he demonstrated behind the wheel of all the various race cars he would park in victory lane,” the Clauson family said in a statement released by the speedway. “However, we were more proud of our Bryan that took a moment to make a young fan’s day, or demonstrated his uncommon kindness and appreciation toward his friends, family and fans.”

Clauson was leading Saturday night’s race at the Belleville Midget Nationals when he crashed while passing lapped traffic; his car rolled and was hit by another competitor. He was airlifted to a hospital in Nebraska, where he died surrounded by his family.

USAC President and CEO Kevin Miller called it “one of the darkest days in the 60-year history of the United States Auto Club.”

“Not only have we lost one of our greatest USAC champions, we’ve lost a true ambassador for all motorsports,” he said.

Fellow driver Kyle Larson said on Twitter that he was glad to become “close friends and competitors with Bryan. He was a guy who pushed me to become a better racer and person.” Danica Patrick called Clauson “one

The Associated Press BEIJING – Swimming officials from Australia and China have joined the fray as a feud over doping between swimmers Mack Horton and Sun Yang boils over at the Rio Olympics.

The Chinese Swimming Association asked Horton on Monday to apologize for his “inappropriate words” after he labeled Sun a “drug cheat” – a reference to Sun’s three-month suspension in 2014 over banned heart medication. Australia’s Olympic Committee shot back in Horton’s defense hours later, saying he was speaking his mind in support of clean athletes and wished him luck.

“We have no intention of making an apology,” Kitty Chiller, Australia’s chef de mission at the Olympics, said in Rio. Horton, 20, took a dig at Sun while the two attended a news conference Saturday after Horton unseated the Chinese defending champion in the 400-meter freestyle. It was the second time in days that Horton had publicly referred to Sun’s drug suspension as part of what the Australian team acknowledged is a campaign to unsettle the Chinese star.

Sun had earlier been accused of splashing water at Horton in an apparent attempt to get his attention, and Horton made his initial “drug cheat” reference when asked why he had ignored Sun. “We would urge athletes to respect their fellow competitors,” International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams said Monday.

Sun, 24, who won two golds at the 2012 London Games, has a long history of bad behavior and tangling with others. He has been accused of disruptive pool behavior by swimmers – both men and women – from several countries.

Sun has previously said he did not know the medication trimetazidine, which he took for chronic heart palpitations, had been placed on the banned list when he tested positive.

The 6-foot-6 Chinese star burst into tears Sunday after losing to Horton, garnering an outpouring of support from Chinese social media users who pilloried Horton on his Facebook page.

The Australian was accused of snubbing Sun’s attempt to congratulate him on his win immediately after the race, although the two did briefly shake hands later at the podium.

“Mack, obviously, has very strong views about the need for clean sport, as every single one of us does, and he has every right to express his views and his displeasure in that sense,” Chiller said.

Chinese swim team manager Xu Qi also laid into Horton, saying the Australian had “hurt the feelings between Chinese and Australian swimmers” and showed “a lack of good manners and upbringing,” according to the official Xinhua news agency.

Sun, who has largely refrained from

firing back at his rival and has called for respect for all athletes, appeared to get his swagger back Monday. He told reporters at an Olympic village bus stop that he is “the king” in the 1,500-meter freestyle event scheduled for Sunday, when he again will compete against Horton. When prodded, he added that he was “no friend” of Horton’s.

The spiraling row has generated a shrill response from Chinese media during what already has been a period of elevated tensions after Australia voiced opposition in recent weeks to Chinese claims of maritime territory.

On Monday, Xinhua released a slew of gently critical articles on topics ranging from Australian trade policy to Melbourne’s quality of life. The Global Times tabloid opted for a more blunt approach, referring to Australia in a commentary as a former British “offshore prison” that is on “the fringes of civilization.”

“We don’t know if it is Horton who is silly or it’s the Australian media that is evil, or perhaps Australia just has a different moral standard,” the newspaper said. “No one should be surprised at uncivilized acts emanating from the country.”

25 Franklin fails to qualify for the final of the 200-meter freestyle

Missy Franklin was a swimming star at the 2012 Olympics.

She couldn’t even make the final of the 200-meter freestyle in Rio. Franklin endured another stunning disappointment Monday night when she finished last in her semifinal heat with only the 13th-fastest time among 16 swimmers.

Franklin touched in 1 minute, 57.56 seconds, which was actually slower than her time in the afternoon preliminaries.

The Associated Press RIO DE JANEIRO – The “Usain Bolt Variety Hour” hit Brazil, big time, on Monday.

The closing number said it all: After talking about life, sprinting and the Olympics – and yes, Bolt insisted the Rio de Janeiro Games will be his last – the 6-foot-5 Jamaican pulled out his cellphone and started taking selfies while he shimmied off stage, surrounded by more than a dozen thong-andheaddress-wearing Samba dancers.

The evening with Bolt also included his now-immortalized “To The World” pose, a few serious questions about racing and doping, along with one reporter who said he had no question, but pronounced: “I really love you, man,” then poetry slammed the following: “I hope you win. I hope it’s your day. I hope you will go even though you get hit by a Segway.”

The now-famous Segway incident occurred after Bolt’s victory in the 200 meters last year at the world championships. While taking a victory lap, a multitasking photographer slammed into the back of Bolt’s legs with his scooter.

Bolt bounced up and was no worse for wear.

In the lead up to the Rio Olympics, his legs haven’t fared as well. He pulled

out of his national championships last month with a sore hamstring, which he has been trying to rehabilitate in time to put on a show in Brazil.

Bolt takes to the track Saturday for the early rounds of the 100 meters. If he wins the 100, 200 and 4x100 relay, the way he has at the last two Olympics, he’ll close his Olympic career with nine gold medals.

By now, though, it’s as much about the show as the results, and Bolt said as much Monday night.

“I’m definitely a sprinter first, but I like to entertain,” he said. “That’s what people come out to see. They like it when I do crazy stuff. I try to entertain and make it different, help people enjoy it.”

By doing that, he has obliterated the decades-old image of the sullen, skulking sprinter – and has also offered a much-needed breath of fresh air in a sport devoured by doping scandals that have dominated the lead-up to the Olympics.

“I think we’re going in the right direction,” Bolt said. “I must say, we’re weeding out the bad ones. I think people should have faith. We have to go through the rough times before we get to the good times.”

Speaking of which, Bolt hasn’t ruled out a goal he set a long time ago – to better his record of 19.19 seconds in his favorite race, the 200.

He has long said he’d like to take the record, which stood at 19.32 for 12 years before he first broke it at the Beijing Olympics, into the 18-second range. But the leg injury leading up to the Olympics made it a less-manageable goal to pursue. Then, after his only Olympic tune-up run – a 200 late last month in London – he met with coach Glen Mills, who told him, “That’s one of the worst races you’ve ever run,” Bolt said.

Still, why not aim high?

“I really, really, really want that one,” Bolt said.

And going after dreams is the main message he wants people to take away from his career.

“For me, it’s always to work toward your goal,” he said. “It’s a hard road.

Never let anyone tell you you can’t do it.”

But as much as sending messages, Bolt pretty much laughed his way through 30 minutes of dance, drama and jokes. He said the only problem he’s encountered during his stay in Rio had to do with TV. The apartment he’s sharing with teammate Asafa Powell didn’t have one.

“Somebody told us they were going to get it,” Bolt said. “After two days, I was just, ‘Buy a TV.’ I’m a good teammate. So I got him a TV.” As always, keeping the people entertained.

Trail running with your four-legged best friend

When Amanda Tichacek began running eight years ago, she found a friendly sidekick in Roxie, her 2-yearold greyhound mix. They started out slowly, but soon began running longer distances on the wooded trails near their home in Skokie.

“We have grown together as runners,” says Tichacek, who now logs 40 to 60 miles a week.

In her prime, Roxie ran near-marathon distances, averaging more than 600 miles a year. Even at age 10, she still can run 6 or more miles with her owner.

For many runners, dogs offer companionship and fun. But while dogs clearly love to run, not all are built for long-distance running with people.

Don’t push your dog too hard, and stop if you see the dog lagging.

A VET’S ADVICE

Runners who want to share their love of the trail with a dog must consider the animal’s age, breed and fitness, says Dr. Jeff Gerlesits, a veterinarian at Homeward Bound Animal Hospital in Arvada, Colorado. Start by getting the dog a checkup.

“You want to make sure things are at a good starting point,” Gerlesits said. A vet will check for respiratory, cardiovascular and orthopedic issues.

To keep Roxie in running shape, Tichacek keeps her hydrated and well-nourished, and watches for signs of stress.

“When she was younger, she was all in and there weren’t any issues.”

“As she’s gotten older, if she wants to stop, that’s it. We’re done. You have to do what’s best for the dog.”

AGE AND BREED

Never run with a dog younger than a year. Dogs, like humans, have growth plates that need to close before they can safely run beyond a playtime scamper.

Dog breeds reach skeletal maturity at different times, smaller dogs generally faster than larger breeds. “For a Labrador, that’s about 12 months, but for a Great Dane, it’s more like 18 months.”

And not all breeds make ideal running partners; for instance, those with squished faces – the technical term is brachycephalic – will have a more difficult time running distances because it’s harder for them to breathe. Those include pugs, bulldogs and boxers.

BUILDING STRENGTH AND STAMINA

Catra Corbett of Fremont, California, runs with TruMan, a 10-year-old dachshund. Despite his short legs, he runs up to 40 miles a week, and has run two 50-kilometer trail races, she says.

TruMan was timid – even afraid of neighborhood walks – when Corbett rescued him in 2012, so she took him trail running.

“I thought, he will either follow me or run back to the car,” she says. “I started running and he followed. The trails saved him. He came alive out there.”

Corbett, who writes about their adventures on a blog called Dirt Diva, built up TruMan’s miles slowly. Gerlesits says that’s prudent.

Dogs are “the same as you and me,” he says. “They need to increase their miles slowly, like 10 percent a week.”

Climate is another factor. Because dogs only sweat through their paws – and cool down via panting – they overheat faster than we do. Gerlesits advises against running a dog in the heat of a summer day, and recommends offering water to a trail-running dog every 30 to 45 minutes at least. Provide food, too; if you need fuel during a long run, so does your dog. Gerlesits recommends a high-protein, high-calorie snack.

“You can tell when you’re pushing your dog too hard – you know your dog. They should be next to you or a little in front, where they like to be,” says Gerlesits. “If your dog is behind you, the workout is too hard.”

TRAIL ETIQUETTE AND SAFETY

“On the single-track trails, you can’t have a dog going nuts,” she says.

“I’ve run with friends whose dogs lacked that etiquette, and it’s frustrating.”

Likewise, Gerlesits leashes his dog, Dawson. “It’s in the best interest of your dog, other runners, other dogs

and wildlife,” he says.

Many local and state parks require that dogs be leashed, while most national parks exclude dogs from trails altogether. Check a park’s rules before you visit, recommends Ranger Ken Low of the National Park Service.

Low works at the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, which has 500 miles of trails east of Los Angeles. Longer trails may cross several parklands, each with its own canine rules.

“You need to do your advance homework and make sure dogs are allowed,” he says. “It’s always good to have a leash on you.”

Trail dangers for dogs range from rattlesnakes to poison ivy and poison oak. Horses have the right of way, Low says, and mountain bikers ought to yield to hikers and runners.

For Tichacek, seeing Roxie enjoy the woods is one of the best parts of running together. “It feeds into her natural instinct of being a dog. She gets to climb over rocks and roots and drink from a stream. It brings me such pleasure and happiness to see that she’s having fun.”

Meeting each month, the MEC coordinates professional and organizational activities, reviews quality and appropriateness of patient care, develops continuing education programs for the medical staff, and makes recommendations to the Board of Directors regarding medical staff appoint-

NEW LENOX – The Midwest Institute of Robotic Surgery at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox recently acquired its third da Vinci robot – the Xi Surgical System, for advanced minimally invasive procedures.

One of the top three robotic surgical programs in the Midwest, more procedures using da Vinci robotic technology are performed at Silver Cross than any other hospital or surgical center in the Chicago metropolitan area.

The da Vinci Xi System is the next frontier for minimally invasive surgery. Controlled 100 percent by a surgeon who sits at a console inside the operating room, the Xi is used for highly complex procedures during which the physician needs to access several parts of the body through the abdomen or chest.

The da Vinci Xi System translates the surgeon’s hand movements into smaller, more precise movements of tiny instruments inside the patient’s body.

Compared with traditional open surgery, robotic surgery requires significantly smaller incisions.

MORRIS – Morris Hospital and Healthcare Centers, and General Practitioner Dr. Mike Cichon have completed an affiliation agreement that merges Cichon’s practice with Morris Hospital and Healthcare Centers.

As part of the agreement, Morris Hospital and Healthcare Centers has bought Cichon’s practice and office building, 103 S. John St. in Dwight, where he and his clinical and office staff will continue to care for patients.

Cichon has served as a practicing physician in the Dwight community for 34 years and will be working with Morris Hospital to recruit a new physician for his eventual retirement.

The affiliation gives Morris Hospital and Healthcare Centers two medical office buildings and three providers in the Dwight community.

Dr. Mark Passerman and nurse practitioner Kathy Ulivi also offer services at Dwight Healthcare Center of Morris Hospital, 101 S. Prairie Ave. As a general practitioner, Cichon provides primary care services to pa-

tients of all ages. He is a 1980 graduate of Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in Downers Grove, where he received his Doctor of Osteopathy degree. In 1981, he completed an osteopathic internship at Martin Place Hospital in Madison Heights, Michigan.

32 Someday lost memories may be recoverable Dear Readers: In yesterday’s column, I answered a reader’s question about what memories are. The reader asked: “When we lose memories, do we lose them forever?”

Today, I want to return to that profoundly important question.

But first, a little reprise. Yesterday, I explained specific memories are thought to reside inside a small group of nerve cells that “talk” to each other.

Each nerve cell has little projections that, microscopically, look like tiny trees with branches and twigs. The branches and (particularly) the twigs of one nerve cell send chemical signals that reach the branches and twigs of another nerve cell. That’s how nerve cells talk to each other. The “talk” requires the chemicals – and the twigs.

We used to think when a person lost a memory, it probably reflected irreversible damage to the synapses involved in that memory. When, for example, a patient with Alzheimer’s disease forgets the name of his son, we assumed the connections between the nerve cells that store that name have been damaged beyond repair.

On reflection, there was a very good reason to have questioned that assumption.

Anyone who has known people with Alzheimer’s disease knows, at least early on, memories are fitful. A patient might forget his son’s name one day and remember it the next. Why, even some of us without Alzheimer’s disease will forget someone’s name one day and remember it the next.

That all suggests a memory really is still there, but we just have trouble retrieving it sometimes.

Some remarkable studies from the laboratory of Dr. Susumu Tonegawa, a Nobel Prize-winning scientist at MIT, indicate memory loss might not be permanent.

Tonegawa’s team studied both normal mice and mice with a form of Alzhei-

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff mer’s disease. The mice were placed in a cage that then delivered an unpleasant electric shock to their feet. A few hours later, the mice were placed back in the cage: They all froze in fear.

However, days later the mice were placed back in the same cage. The normal mice were fearful. In contrast, the mice with Alzheimer’s-like disease weren’t frightened: they apparently had lost the memory of the shock they had received in that cage.

The scientists had located where in the brains of the mice the memory of the shock was stored. They then used a technique called optogenetics to stimulate that area in the mice with Alzheimer’s-like disease.

This time, those mice (like the normal mice) froze in fear when they were placed in the cage. The memory that had been “lost” really had been there all along, and the stimulation had retrieved it.

This research indicates memories may not really be lost. The optogenetics technique that retrieved memory in mice could not be used in humans in its current form.

However, the research offers hope that one day scientists will be able to figure out how to retrieve memories that are there, but inaccessible, in humans.

Don’t hold your breath; that day is almost surely a long way off. But if and when it comes, it will be an important milestone in human history.

recently took my 5-year-old, “Ralphie,” to his pediatrician. While we were waiting to see the doctor, Ralphie played a game on my phone. Then the doctor knocked on the door, entered, said “hi” and smiled. He called my son’s name and immediately, without any prompts to get Ralphie’s attention, proceeded to take the phone from my son’s hand.

You simply don’t take things from people’s hands to get their attention. Ralphie might be a child, but he also is a person. I would feel different if, after the doctor had tried to get his attention, my son had ignored him.

I understand Ralphie had to get ready to pay attention and follow instructions. If he hadn’t, I would have removed the phone myself. This doctor is very competent and has seen Ralphie since the day he was born. He always has been dry and a bit brusque.

How do I tell the doctor I find what he did unacceptable without risking the relationship?

I’m not very assertive. The reason I don’t say anything most of the time is because I become angry very easily, and while I understand there are ways to say things, I simply do not possess those skills. What can I do? – Laura In

If you are faced with a problem and see two possible solutions, often your first thought will be right -- but, as you are aware from experience, not always. Ideally, you analyze both choices and will realize which is better.

In today’s deal, look at the North and East hands. South is in six spades.

After West leads the club king, how should East signal?

South’s four-spade opening bid showed a good eight-card suit and some 6-10 high-card points. North used Blackwood, then jumped to six spades opposite one ace. (If North-South had been using Roman Key Card Blackwood, South would have shown only one key card, so North would have known his side was missing either two aces or one ace and the spade king, so would have stopped safely in five spades.

Note, though, that if North had four spades, giving a 12-card fit, he would not have known what to do, because South’s spades might have been headed by the ace -- no trump loser -- or the king -- one trump loser.)

East should realize that the defenders must take one club and one spade. But the spade finesse is working for declarer. If only dummy could be forced to trump something.

Right -- East should not encourage with his club nine; he should overtake partner’s club king with his ace and return a club. This will work as long as declarer has at least two clubs, which is highly likely.

LEGAL NOTICE ADVERTISEMENT FOR REQUESTS FOR PROPOSALS RFP 2199-0916 CITY OF JOLIET Facilities Maintenance Study Consultant Services The City of Joliet, Illinois does hereby invite sealed Requests for Proposals (RFPs) from qualified firms to provide a professional appraisal and cost services study on the current state of all its facilities.

Proposals will be received at the Office of the City Clerk, City of Joliet Municipal Building, 150 West Jefferson Street, Joliet, Illinois 60432, until 2 p.m. local time on Monday, August 29, 2016, at which time they will be opened and publicly read aloud.

There is a mandatory pre-proposal meeting on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at 2 p.m. in the City Hall Planning Conference Room, 150 W. Jefferson St., Joliet, IL 60432. Consultants must be present at the pre-proposal meeting in order to submit a proposal. Free Parking is available on the south, east and west sides of City Hall.

Those desiring to submit a proposal may examine the proposal documents and detailed specifications in the City of Joliet Purchasing Division, 150 W. Jefferson St., Joliet, IL 60432 between the hours of 8:00 A.M. and 4:30 P.M., Monday through Friday. Electronic copies can be downloaded free of charge at http://www.cityofjoliet.info/bidsproposals.
